So even though your Labrador puppy will outgrow his harness and collar quickly, I still suggest investing in these items. Here are five of my favorite leash, harness, and collar products for Labrador Retriever puppies. As I mentioned above, puppies are especially fragile so steer clear of attaching a leash to their collar and try to help them adjust to wearing a harness that is comfortable. What I like about this harness is that it is adjustable so you can use it a bit longer as your puppy grows. Best of all it is the perfect length five feet for puppy training and is a leash your Lab puppy can take with him into adulthood. It is built like a standard leash, but it offers you control over how far away your puppy can get. These gates are also not ideal for leaving puppies unsupervised as they can sometimes find ways to knock them down. Grooming your Labrador puppy early on not only helps to socialize him and prepare him for a life of vet visits, groomer visits, and physical contact with people, but it also helps to keep him clean and healthy. Like babies, puppies are more sensitive to certain products and require products that are specifically designed to be gentle on their sensitive skin and fur. You also need to trim their nails often to avoid overgrowth and check their ears regularly for infection. You should also check their eyes often too. It is best to bathe your dog only when they need it, as these pups can have quite sensitive skin. Ensure that their coat is completely dry after bathing too, so they do develop any skin irritation. Try to brush their teeth everyday to avoid dental decay or disease. You can always use dental chews if this is easier! The bloodlines of the English Lab and the American Labrador is what sets them apart. Aside from this difference, the only other real difference is that the English Lab is slightly smaller than the American and can also be known to be a little lazier! You should be able to find a breeder easily thanks to their popularity, but you must watch out for irresponsible breeders and puppy mills. The breeder should always be able to give you health clearances for both parent breeds and you should see the puppies with their mother before you buy. If you do not want to buy your English Lab, you can always adopt. Unfortunately, due to their popularity these dogs are also popular in shelters. Check your local rescue center as you may find a pup who is looking for their forever home! Generally, a collar should be used more for identification purposes attaching ID tags, trackers etc and less for walking. Some people do, especially if their dog is well behaved with minimum interaction from the walker required — but a lot of the time the benefits and reduced risk from a harness are apparent. We often highlight the benefits of front range harnesses such as the Ruffwear because of the option to use it in the standard way or as a training harness. By being able to attach the leash to both the front and back — you can not only navigate your French Bulldog better — you can train them one tug at a time. Other harnesses work in a slightly different way — but be careful of some cheaper harnesses which put all the pressure on a single point. Every breeding we plan and do is with the hope of getting our next show puppy. When the puppies are close to ten weeks old, we make our choice of which pup or puppies we plan to keep. Next, we begin mentally matching the others with their potential owners. Scott and I are very experienced in this and it is we who make the decision where each puppy will go. We have many, many Cabernet families that can attest to the fact that having us do the matching really works. That is one reason why we have so many of them returning for another Cabernet Poodle. There are several factors that go into this process. It is very interesting to us that puppies inherit not only physical traits from certain dogs in their ancestry, but they also often inherit particular behavior or personality traits. Some will fit in best in a quiet household where it is the only dog. Others will always be more active and adventuresome, wanting a life where a lot is going on. Are there children in the home and if so, what ages? Have you had a Poodle before? Do you want a dog to go running with you? To visit nursing homes? Do you want a dog that can get along with your other dogs? The more you tell us about yourself, the easier it is for us to choose the right puppy for you. We encourage you to stay in touch throughout the process and beyond. Knowing you and your lifestyle helps us choose the puppy we feel will make a great match but we want you to get to know us too. If you have a specific sex or color that you are requesting and we do not have it once the puppies are born, your deposit will be refunded. How We Nurture Our Puppies It is important to us that the pups we place have the best psychological start in life that we can give them. From their first day until their eyes and ears open, we are constantly holding them so that they become comfortable with the touch of human hands. When they begin to see and hear, they are introduced to many new sights and sounds. So they become accustomed to all the sounds and sights of daily living. By the time the puppies are weeks old, we begin taking them on short field trips to experience new sounds, sights and places. We also begin to have a constant stream of friends and children come to socialize the pups. We encourage and extend invitations to all prospective families to come and play with all the puppies. We believe that all of this makes our puppies feel more confident when they go out into the world and become wonderful companions for their families.
