Some breeders may charge more than others, and the price may also depend on the bloodlines of the puppies. Generally speaking, GSD puppies from good bloodlines will be more expensive than those from mediocre bloodlines. A low-quality dog could end up costing you more in the long run due to health problems or behavioral issues. The price will vary mostly because of the bloodlines of the parents. Dogs with champion bloodlines will be more expensive because those bloodlines have been proven to produce healthy and sound puppies. There are many different ways to determine if a breeder is responsible and cares about the health of their dogs, including: A good place to start searching for breeders in your area is on local Facebook groups or by looking up German shepherds in your Yellow Pages directory. Make sure you ask lots of questions and get to know the breeder and their dogs before you make a purchase. One of the best ways to find a responsible German shepherd breeder is to visit dog shows in your area. Be wary of breeders who are only interested in selling puppies; good breeders will want to ensure that their puppies are going to good homes. If the breeder has a kennel-style facility, be sure to ask to see where the puppies are kept. They should be clean and healthy, with plenty of space to run around. Avoid breeders who keep their dogs in cages or small spaces; this is not healthy for the animals. The best way to determine if a breeder is responsible is to meet their dogs. Ask to see the mother of the puppies, as well as any other dogs that are living at the premises. Puppy mills are becoming increasingly common, so be sure to avoid breeders who only seem interested in making a sale. Responsible breeders will want to ensure that their puppies are going to good homes, and they will be happy to answer any questions you have about the breed. Good breeders will be happy to provide you with contact information for happy customers. Be sure to ask the breeder lots of questions about the puppies, such as their health history, temperament, and what type of home they would be best suited for. A good breeder will take the time to answer all of your questions and will want to make sure that their puppies are going to a good home. References will give you the opportunity to get in touch with past customers and ask them about their experiences. This will help you determine if the German Shepherd breeder you have chosen is a good one. A good breeder will be more than happy to put you in touch with happy customers who will tell you all about their experience working with the breeder. If the breeder is reputable, you will likely find that their past customers have only good things to say about them. If a breeder is reluctant to put you in touch with past customers, or if they cannot provide references, avoid them at all costs. This is a sure sign that they are not reputable and you should never work with someone like this for any reason. When looking for a good breeder, it is also important to ask about their veterinarian. A reputable breeder will have a great relationship with their veterinarian and will be able to provide you with references. This is important because you want to make sure that your puppy is in good hands and that they are getting the best possible care. If the breeder cannot provide you with a good veterinarian, it is best to avoid them. This is another sign that they may not be reputable and may not be taking care of their animals in the best way possible. A relationship with a veterinarian is crucial as a breeder. This is because unethical breeders do not want you to know how unhygienic their breeding facilities really are. They may also fear that if you get too close, you will notice that their animals are unhealthy or malnourished. Refuses to Give Full medical History of Sire and Dam: If the breeder refuses to give you a full medical history of the sire and dam, it is likely that they are hiding something. Good breeders will always be happy to share this information with you as they want you to be aware of any health concerns that may be passed down to the puppy. Sells Puppies at Pet Stores: Puppy mills often sell their puppies to pet stores. If the breeder you are working with is selling their puppies in pet stores, it is likely that they are a puppy mill. Avoid them at all costs. Asking the right questions can help you weed out the bad breeders from the good ones. Ask if you can see where their puppies are born and raised. A breeder that is reputable will be more than happy to show you where they keep their animals. Not only does this give you peace of mind, but it also gives you very valuable insight into how your puppy was bred. All puppies have the potential to develop health problems as they grow older. If the breeder does not seem to care about the health of their animals, it is best to avoid them. A good breeder will always be willing to answer your questions. Do not hesitate to ask the Wyoming breeder any questions you may have. A good breeder will always be happy to oblige. This means having a crate ready, as well as puppy-proofing the area so that there are no accidents. Crates provide an ideal place for puppies to sleep and will help keep them safe while their owner is away at work or school. They also help with house training as puppies cannot have accidents if they are confined to the crate. Once they learn that of course. Make sure to have plenty of toys, treats and chew toys on hand. German Shepherd puppies love to chew, so make sure that there are plenty of safe options available. Another thing that you should be prepared for is the fact that your puppy will likely need to go outside quite often at first as they learn house rules. Make sure that you have a leash ready. This means that you should not get angry when they have an accident in the house. Instead, simply clean up the mess and use positive reinforcement when they do something that they are not allowed to do like going to the bathroom in the house. Crate-training can help make house training much easier for both you and your pup by confining them when there is no one around watching them. While most dogs will whine or bark when confined like this, crates become a safe haven for pets over time. If you decide to try crate training your One of the most important things that you need to do when potty training your new German Shepherd puppy is to be consistent. Always take them outside immediately after they eat, drink or play. It may also help to create a designated potty area outside where you can take them regularly. This will help your puppy associate going potty with a specific area. They are a very special breed that requires lots of love and attention. Please be sure that you have the time to give them what they need. Have Fun! I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Puppy pads Create a Schedule German Shepherd pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. Still, it would be best to prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep. Moderate Training German Shepherds are highly trainable. It simply means they respond well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. History Where are German Shepherd Dogs from? She is already so comfortable here and so attached. She gets so excited every time she sees us. And she has such a sweet disposition Everything goes for her. She just rolls with it. She loves to play and has lots of playful energy when she chases behind a toy or plays tug of war. But she loves to cuddle too, and she can busy herself well too without complaint. Yesterday we left her home when we went on a walk and she never barked or whined and was fast asleep when we returned. She accepted her crate as if she had never known any other place to rest. She just crawls in there and rests when she is tired. And when she wakes up, she quietly plays until we take her out of the playpen. Her potty training is going well. A couple of accidents here and there, but most of the time we catch her before anything happens, and she always does her business right away when we put her on the grass patch we have on the patio. She is getting a treat when she does her business. So, she actually figured out that if she spares some pee and squats several times, she will get several treats. Only One treat for the first time, everything after does not get rewarded any more. Wow, I have never seen a puppy learning that fast. And loving to learn. Being really food driven helps. I could not think of a better quarantine buddy to brighten up our day. I think she will be an amazing therapy dog who brightens up the day if many more people. The origin of the Golden Cocker Retriever was not widely documented and it is thought that this breed could be a designer breed that was created in the later s and the early s. Characteristics Of The Golden Cocker Retriever As we mentioned above, because the Golden Cocker Retriever is a crossbreed, it can be difficult to know exactly what your pup might look like and what their temperament might be. However, we can guess based on past litters. Both of the parents — either a Golden Retriever or a Cocker Spaniel — can be the sire or the dam in this cross breed. This contributes to the varying size and appearance of many Golden Cocker Retrievers. Regardless of some of the finer details, this breed is known for being an intelligent and friendly breed. The litter size for a Golden Retriever mix can be anywhere between 4 to 12 puppies. This means that they are said to maintain the look of a puppy, even as they grow up. It can be difficult to know exactly when they reach their adult life, but it is estimated anywhere between months. Mental maturity can take up to three years. A Golden Cocker Retriever is normally smaller than a Golden Retriever and usually weighs around pounds and measures between inches. They are a medium sized breed and are broader than a Cocker Spaniel with a long, smooth coat, floppy ears and a head which is slightly bigger than a Spaniels. Coat The Golden Cocker Retriever coat is normally medium in length and is smooth. It will have some featured fringes around the legs, ears and stomach which will need to be brushed daily to prevent any matting. Some puppies inherit more genes from the Golden and therefore have a double coat, meaning the fur may be denser and require more thorough grooming. We will go into more detail about grooming your Golden Cocker Retriever dog later on. If the Cocker Spaniel parent is brown, black, white or merle, then this can be passed to the pup. Temperament The Golden Cocker Retriever is a loyal and loving dog and is the perfect companion. They have a natural playful instinct that makes them fun to be around, and they love to chase and run around. Both parents have a sporting background which means your Retriever will love to be outside playing with you. Because they are so friendly they can make the perfect playmate for older children, but know to gentle around younger children too. They will want to be with you at all times, so they are not the right pet to have if you are going to be out for hours at a time. They will do best in a busier household where they have people around for most of the day. Luckily, these dogs are easy to train and, most of the time, undesirable behaviors can be trained out of them. This can include barking as well as behaviors brought on by anxiety if they are left alone for too long. Lifespan The typical life expectancy of a Golden Cocker Retriever is normally between 11 to 14 years. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Cataracts — you might suspect your dog has cataracts if they are constantly bumping into furniture. Cataracts can be cured with surgery. Hypothyroidism — this can be caused by a deficiency of the thyroid hormone and may produce signs that include infertility, obesity, mental dullness and lack of energy. It can be treated with medication. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA — this is an eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Daily Life We have covered what the temperament and the characteristics of the Golden Cocker Retriever are and how many of their traits depend on what they inherit from their parents. Now, we can take a look at what living with this dog is like. Luckily, no matter what features your Golden Retriever Cocker Spaniel hybrid inherits from their parents, daily life with them is pretty much the same. Of course, you should always check the back of the dog food packet to confirm how much you should be feeding them based on their exact weight. Try to feed your Golden Cocker Retriever high-quality dog food two times a day. If possible, you should try to put them on food that is formulated for medium to large dog breeds, again based on their weight. Hybrids When you take a golden retriever and mix it with a cocker spaniel, the outcome is a truly adorable golden cocker retriever, also known as a Dakota sport retriever or a cogol. These hybrid dogs are called forever puppies because they maintain a puppy-like look to them even when they are fully grown. The golden cocker retriever is a hybrid or designer dog intentionally created to combine the best qualities of the cocker spaniel and the golden retriever together. The golden cocker retriever maintains the look of the golden retriever in a smaller package with longer hair. The golden cocker retriever is an excellent family dog, provided you can meet its needs. Read on to find out if the golden cocker retriever is the dog for you. Parentage Of The Golden Cocker Retriever When mixing two breeds together, like the golden retriever and the cocker spaniel, there is no guarantee of exactly how each puppy will look and behave in every litter. Understanding the history and personality of both parent breeds will also give you an idea of how your golden cocker retriever will behave later on in life as it develops its personality as an adult. The Golden Retriever The golden retriever as we know it today, originated in Scotland in the mid to late s and early s. The golden retriever was bred to be a sporting dog with a soft mouth. Its job was to chase down prey, usually waterfowl, after the owner had shot one down. Once the dog located the prey, it would gently pick it up in its mouth and bring it back to the owner. The area in which they had to do the retrieving was often marshy, so the dogs were bred to have warm coats and be excellent swimmers. For a more detailed look at how the golden retriever came to be, check out our dedicated article on their history. Golden retrievers are highly loyal, dedicated, easily trainable, and loving dogs. It is important to note the golden retriever is also very high energy and requires a lot of mental and physical stimulation. The Cocker Spaniel Cocker spaniels originated in Europe as sporting and hunting dogs. They were used to flush out birds from bushes and low lying brush for the hunter to shoot them down. There are many different types of spaniels, but the cocker spaniel was so named because that specific breed specialized in hunting woodcocks. Cocker spaniels were popularized by the Disney movie Lady and the Tramp and U. The cocker spaniel is an easily trainable dog who loves spending time with the family in all activities. However, they are high energy pups who require a lot of time and effort from their owners in order to stay happy. The Golden Cocker Retriever The golden cocker retriever takes on the best of both breeds and looks a lot like a shrunken version of the golden retriever with the long floppy ears of the cocker spaniel. The golden cocker retriever is a very high energy dog and will require a lot of energy from you as well. The golden cocker retriever stands at 20 to 24 inches and weighs 30 to 45 pounds on average. This makes them a medium-sized dog. They are inquisitive dogs who love being involved with their humans and their environment. Golden cocker retrievers are great dogs to have if you have children. They love the company and energy small children bring to the home and will get along with them very well. The golden cocker retriever is an intelligent dog which will require mental as well as physical stimulation from you in order to be happy. Trainability Thanks to both of the parent dogs, the golden retriever and the cocker spaniel, the golden cocker retriever takes to training very well. They are intelligent dogs that enjoy the effort it takes to learn tricks and tasks. Training should be consistent and based on positive reinforcement as the golden cocker retriever takes harsh words and negative punishment to heart. Health Concerns Golden cocker retrievers are a mixed breed, which means they have a wider genetic pool to draw from. This means they are genetically healthier than either of their purebred parents. However, because the golden retriever and cocker spaniel share some common health concerns, they can appear in the golden cocker retriever too. Be on the lookout for: Hip dysplasia Entropion eyelid condition Hypothyroidism Taking your golden cocker retriever to the vet every year for a check up and their vaccines is incredibly important. Prevention is always better than treatment. Your vet can catch small issues developing in the early stages and provide preventative care before the problem becomes life threatening or painful for your dog. The golden cocker retriever seems like an ideal medium-sized dog for any family. However there are some care needs you need to consider to determine if this is the dog for you or not. The golden cocker retriever is an incredibly high-energy dog. They require a minimum of an hour of exercise a day, preferably split over two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Physical exercise can take the form of play sessions with you, walks, going to the dog park, swimming time, hikes, obedience training, and playing fetch. If you have trained your golden cocker retriever well, taking them to an off-leash dog park and allowing them to run around and explore all the different sights and smells is an excellent way to stimulate them. Golden cocker retrievers need mental stimulation during the day, which is separate from their physical exercise. Toys, slow feeders , lick mats , snuffle mats , and puzzle games are all excellent options to boost their mental stimulation. The golden cocker retriever has a beautiful coat that sheds a lot thanks to the golden retriever and cocker spaniel parents. They will need to be brushed every second or third day depending on the individual dog. If your golden cocker retriever loves swimming, their coat will need to be dried and brushed after every swim. There are two different kinds of cocker spaniel , the American and the English. Both kinds can be crossed with a golden retriever to make a golden cocker retriever. The biggest difference between the two cocker spaniels is their size. The American breeders focused on producing small, sleek companion cocker spaniels, while the English breeders focused on breeding larger cocker spaniels with longer legs. Therefore, the English cocker spaniel is taller and slightly broader than the American cocker spaniel. Parent Breed. Goldadors are very social, intelligent, easy to train and are an excellent family companion. Our Goldadors can be anywhere from lbs. Country Retrievers With the many requests for Country Retrievers also known as Comfort Retrievers or Golden Cockers , we spent time researching the cross over the past 2 years. This year, in , we are excited to introduce our first Country Retriever puppies! Country Retrievers are a smaller version of the Golden Retriever, with the combined friendliness, loyalty, and sweet temperaments of both breeds. Throw in a dash of the comical, playful spirit of the Cocker Spaniel, and the Comfort Retriever is lovingly referred to as the Forever Puppy. Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular family pets. They are playful but gentle with children. They get along well with other pets, and are friendly to family and strangers alike. The intelligent Golden Retriever is very versatile. They excel in obedience training. Our Golden Retrievers can weigh between 55 — 75 pounds. Cocker Spaniel The Cocker Spaniel is a very gentle, easy-going, yet lively companion. Cocker Spaniels love their people families, love to snuggle, play together, and give a good laugh with their antics. They repay the loving they receive in multiples of loyalty and affection. Our Cocker Spaniels come in a variety of colours and can weigh from pounds. Genetics play an important role in the health and longevity of your puppy, but environmental factors play a greater role. Things like over and under stimulation, exercise, quality of food, home environment, etc… greatly affect the health and lifespan of your puppy. The quality of the nutrition your puppy receives directly affects his health, so we strongly recommend that your pup is fed top quality dog food. To protect each dog from negative breeding experiences and puppy mill conditions, the signing of a non-breeding contract is required. Our entire business is made to ensure that no dog is kept in unethical, inhumane conditions, and we are careful in screening potential puppy families to ensure each puppy goes to the best possible home. Follow Us. If you love the amazing personality of a Golden Retriever and the small size and loyalty of a Cocker Spaniel, you may love a Cocker Spaniel Golden Retriever mix. What do Golden Cocker Retrievers look like? These Golden Cocker Retrievers come in several sizes, colors and looks. They come in all the same coat colors as a normal Cocker Spaniel but commonly come in white, red, golden and tan. First generation cocker golden mix dogs have more floppy ears. When breeding a second and third generation, there is usually a higher percentage of Golden Retrievers in the mix. The golden retriever mixed with cocker spaniel puppies can often be referred to as "Miniature Golden Retrievers" or "Golden Minis". These puppies can look very much like a "Mini Golden Retriever" and have many of the same personality traits. When they are puppies you can see the Cocker Spaniel showing up in their eyes. They look almost angry, but it often fades with age. Here is a male Cocker Spaniel mix at 7 weeks old and again at 3 months old. The size depends on the parents of the puppies. In a first generation cocker spaniel golden retreiver mix you need to look at the size of the Golden Retriever used. The general rule of thumb is the puppies will be in between the sizes of both parents. However every now and again we see puppies that grow up to be bigger than both parents. To get a good idea of how much the puppies will weigh as a golden cocker retriever full grown we often use this weight chart predictor from thegoodypet. It has been the most accurate we have found to predict adult weight. Many people wonder if this mixed breed is a good family dog and easy to train. Yes, a Cocker Spaniel mix with Golden Retriever can make a great family pet. The Golden Cocker mix is a loyal and smart companion. They also are dogs that are easy to potty train. Cocker Spaniel Golden Retriever mix puppies tend to be food driven so we often train with kibble instead of treats. Issues with a Golden Cocker Retriever mix? The most common problem I see in the Cocker Spaniel Golden mix is some litters are more mouthy. They nip at anything moving which sometimes includes hands. Most are not, but it does happen every now and again. Remember that Cocker Spaniels were originally bred to be working dogs that kept livestock together by nipping at their heels. They also love to chase moving objects which is fantastic if you like playing fetch with your puppy but can scare children that don't know how to behave around a puppy. Two purebred parents will have more of a Cocker Spaniel look. Make sure to ask what they expect the full grown Golden Cocker Retriever to weigh. It will only be an estimate and there are no guarantees but it is good to get an idea. Also ask what kind of health testing was done on the parents of the litter. We normally have Cocker Golden Retriever mix puppies available or coming soon. Check out our puppies HERE or fill out the form below and we will get back to you. First Name. It is a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Cocker Spaniel. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. We got him from some people who didn't take very good care of him. This dog is an amazing athlete and can run non stop for a long time and has powerful hind legs for jumping. He does not have the swimming ability like our 8 year old Golden Retriever, Rosie. He is the nicest dog you can ask for, he's always up to play , never bites , loves playing with other dogs , and always wants to get outside the house. Great family dog! She loves to go fishing and swimming. When I put her out in her run to play she will call me when she's ready to come in by saying 'mama. She does have some English Cocker Spaniel in her too. She is a very sweet, smart, playful puppy. She loves to carry around sticks when she is playing outside and enjoys going on a walk. She is content to sleep in her indoor doggy kennel-bed at night. I couldn't imagine a better family pet! Bred by Dakota Winds Ranch. However, they may have as much as .He's got the gentle disposition of his Golden Retriever friend and the up-beatness of a Cocker Spaniel. Her favorite food is bar-b-q and will jump off the walls until midnight! I got Tucker from a breeder. He was the only shorthaired puppy in the litter. The breeder did not know why he came out shorthaired, so a DNA test was done. His sire was, in fact, his sire. There is no reasonable explanation why he has short hair, other than he just does! He is a great little dog and a very sweet puppy. He is very gentle, loving and sweet.

They have a short muzzle and have been bred to have an even and pleasant temperament which makes them a great companion for families with children. They are very playful in nature and even have some hilarious moments as they thrive for human attention and long, lasting friendships. French Bulldogs are typically less than 28 pounds. They're consistently in the top 10 of most popular registered dog breeds in America. Before you start asking where can I find a "French Bulldog for sale near me" you need to make sure it's the right breed for you. Here is everything you need to know about French Bulldogs, including their history, appearance, disposition, activity level, care needs, and cost. History French Bulldogs are the result of a cross between Toy Bulldogs imported from England and local ratter dogs in Paris, France, in the s. The breed was then exported to France, where it became known as the Bouledogue Francais. In , these dogs were brought back to England and they eventually made their way to America. Frenchies are now their own specific breed. Appearance When it comes to appearance, the number one thing people associate with them are their large, bat-like ears that are set high on their heads. French Bulldog puppies for sale typically have a stocky build with short legs, a large head, and a stubby tail. A French Bulldog puppy has a wrinkly appearance and a short nose and muzzle. French Bulldogs typically weigh between 20 and 28 pounds and stand 12 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder. Their incredibly gorgeous, short-haired and long-haired coats come in several colors and patterns, such as fawn, tan, brown, chocolate, cocoa, blue or dilute, cream, lilac, Isabella, black, brindle, piebald, and merle. Disposition If you're looking for a small, lovable companion dog, you can't go wrong with a Frenchie. These dogs are known for their affectionate, gentle nature and loving, easygoing personality, and they make great pets for families with children. They can be lively and hilarious. Searching for "French Bulldog puppies near me for sale" and finding the right pup will leave you a companion dog through and through. They love nothing more than to cuddle up with their favorite person and they make excellent lap dogs. They do well in homes with children and other pets, although they can be a bit boisterous at times. They don't bark much and don't like to be left alone for long periods of time. French Bulldog puppies thrive in any environment from apartments to rural areas. Activity Level Looking for French Bulldogs for sale may have you wondering how much exercise a Frenchie requires to be happy and healthy. They are relatively inactive dogs and don't require a lot of exercise, although they do enjoy occasional walks and playtime. They are a great choice for busy people. You won't need a large yard for a Frenchie. Grooming Requirements French Bulldogs are relatively low-maintenance in terms of grooming needs. They can have a short coat that is smooth and soft to the touch. Some long-haired French Bulldog puppies are called Fluffies. When it comes to grooming, French Bulldog puppies only need to be brushed occasionally, and their nails should be trimmed regularly. They are also moderate shedders, so you'll need to do some regular vacuuming to keep your home clean. Training Opting for a French Bulldog puppy for sale is the perfect choice if you're looking for a funny, even-tempered, social pup. Training them can be more challenging since they are so incredibly stubborn. These dogs have big personalities and a mind of their own. You can make training a French Bulldog puppy into a game and offer rewards like food or treats, praise, and playtime. However, with consistency and motivation, their people-pleasing personality will have them trained in no time. Cost If you're wondering, where can I find a "French Bulldog puppy for sale near me? French Bulldog puppies for sale can be higher priced due to their coat length, genetic makeup, and rare coat colors, including which genes they carry, such as the intensity coat color gene variant, dilution, merle, lilac, or Isabella. They also have some health problems that can be expensive to treat, such as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and respiratory issues, so be aware of these expenses in addition to regular veterinarian care. However, with proper care, a Frenchie can be a loving and loyal companion for years to come. When looking for Frenchies for sale, it's crucial to factor in the ongoing costs beyond just the initial price. Food, toys, veterinary care, vaccinations, and other ongoing expenses should be taken into consideration. For instance, if you're planning to travel with a fluffy friend, be ready to pay for a pet-friendly transportation service. However, for many owners, the joy and companionship that these beautiful pups provide are well worth the investment. If you're looking for French Bulldog puppies near me, be sure to research breeders carefully. A trustworthy breeder with Frenchie puppies for sale will provide documentation of vaccinations and other health records for their puppies. A good breeder will also be happy to answer any questions you have about the breed, including size, temperament, and grooming needs — so don't be afraid to ask away! While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. The goal is to show your dog that all people and pets should be engaged with calmly and respectfully. This is a very dominant breed and so you should take the time to socialize it early to avoid that behavior as much as possible. Socialization will help the dog develop an even temper. This is an important part of raising an American Bulldog. Without socialization, your new dog may be suspicious of all new people and animals, which can lead to unwanted behaviors, such as biting. You can socialize your dog by taking it to public areas and allowing it to have positive experiences with new people and pets. If at a dog park, slowly introduce your dog to the other dogs and people around you while still on the leash. If your dog seems to be friendly, comfortable, and welcomes the interaction, praise it for its good behavior and gradually allow more interaction off-leash and in larger areas. If visiting a breeder to pick out a pup, there are some specific things to look for that can indicate socialization has already begun. Observe how the puppy interacts with its littermates as well as its parents. A shy, withdrawn, or overly cautious pup is probably not well socialized and has not been exposed to a lot of different situations. Remember that when you get a dog you want to avoid bad breeding situations, for example puppy mills. Not only do unethical breeders have inhumane conditions for their dogs and usually inbreed them, but they do not do the early training and socializing of their dogs that is imperative to raising a well-adjusted dog. Each dog will develop their social skills at their own speed, so go as slow as needed. As your dog becomes more socialized and comfortable with new things, you will see that it develops an overall better temperament. Don't forget to introduce cats, children, and anything else that you want your dog to be familiar and comfortable with as well. Take your introductions slow! When introducing your dog to a cat, don't let the animals see each other right off the bat. Keep them in separate rooms and allow them to smell each other under the closed door. After they get used to each other's smell, let them see each other from a distance. Over several days let them get closer to each other on a regular basis, all while keeping a hold of both. Also, know that in some areas there are legal liabilities related to owning this particular breed. There have also been cases of homeowner insurance policies being denied and the breed is actually banned from ownership in some areas. Research the situation in your area before committing to this breed. American Bulldogs are a very intelligent, strong-willed, and frequently stubborn breed. This can make them a challenge to train, especially for first-time dog owners. They will need to know that you are the dominant one in the relationship and training them will require a lot of dedication and patience. It will be beneficial for you and your new pup to train with voice commands as well as hand signals. The upside to training with both of these commands is that if you are in a situation where your dog can't hear you, they can still see what you are asking them to do and can react accordingly. Giving your dog treats or praise when it does something right will help reinforce the behavior. Positive reinforcement goes a long way with this breed, as they enjoy pleasing their owners. Since this breed loves attention from the people that they are bonded with, ignoring your dog when they exhibit bad behavior will work better than other disciplinary measures. When trained and socialized well, American Bulldogs have the tools they need to judge a situation and decide when everything is OK or when they may need to act on their natural guarding instincts. During any sort of training, if you feel overwhelmed or your dog doesn't seem to be learning at a reasonable pace, consult a professional. They will be able to answer any questions or concerns you may be having about the process or techniques that you are using. Contact How to Train an American Bulldog: Beginners Guide Training any dog, no matter the age takes patience and discipline for both you and your dog. While you may think you need to wait until they are older to train them, it is actually better for your dog to start training as early as weeks. The earlier you introduce a schedule and regular routines, the easier it will be for you as they grow and adapt to normal life changes. The first year can be difficult and frustrating, but understand that you are building a foundation for the behavior you desire for the rest of their life. How to Train an American Bulldog? You will need to stay calm and show no aggression as the bulldog will mimic you or become defensive. Start by clearly saying the command you wish to teach. Demonstrate the command, or show your dog how. For example, if you are teaching your bulldog to sit, gently push down on his behind while holding your arm underneath his front legs until they are in a sitting position. Give positive reinforcements such as a treat. Repeat this process a few times, or until your American bulldog looses interest. This may take a few training sessions. Be patient and calm with your American bulldog while teaching commands. We will discuss commands they should be able to learn based on age and when to start incorporating more training and socialization. Training By Stages When training your American bulldog, you have to be prepared to teach them in stages. Attempting to train them on several skills all at once will be too much for the dog to learn and will only result in you and them becoming very frustrated. For your dog to successfully learn skills well and for maximum retention, you have to space out their training through their first year. You want to start with simple things and slowly progress to harder, more complex ideas and tricks. Potty Training your American Bulldog Puppy A good place to start training is obviously potty training during this early stage for your American Bulldog. Best practices would be: Expect to take an American bulldog to the potty every mins for the first few weeks until they start getting control of their bladder. Remember to be patient during this time. Try to keep them on hard surfaces if possible while indoors to make cleaning any accidents up easy. It will take a few weeks for an American bulldog puppy to pick up the habit. But continue to demonstrate positive reinforcement to encourage proper behavior while the puppy gets a hang of this new routine and learns how to control their bladder. Also be mindful that during this infancy stage, the American bulldog puppy will also need to be fed more frequently due to rapid growth and exertion of energy. This is normal to expect at this time of their life. If your puppy knows how their day will go, they can prepare for things and learn how to wait for food and bathroom breaks. You will need to be completely focused on this routine. Try not to plan any trips or big events during this time. While you may have different schedules every day, try to keep it consistent as much as you can. Try to wake up around the same time and go to bed around the same time so everything in between can be consistent as well. This will help your dog eat and sleep well for the rest of their lives when starting this routine early. You, of course, want to start simple and work your way into harder things. As you begin to train your puppy, keep in mind that they are very young and their energy levels are high for short periods of time, they will get tired quickly. You also need to remember that they do not know how to act in any situation, and it is your job to teach them; this is why you are training them. See also Are Iguanas Dangerous to Cats? Investigating the Risks of Owning an Iguana as a Pet Socialization As early as you can, find friends that have small dogs or puppies that you can regularly get together with, so your dog can learn how to act around other animals. Your dog will learn better social skills when they are commonly around the same few animals rather than random interactions. Early socialization will help your dogs learn that other animals and humans are generally not a threat. It will be easier to show your puppy this, at this young stage, when they are still learning and exploring their environment. American bulldogs are large and strong, so it is important to teach them not to jump on or lunge at other people and animals. This will also allow you to ensure the dogs that you pick will treat your dog well rather than fearing aggression issues. When owners and new friends are calm, your puppy will be in a better state to learn and explore. This will create such a good atmosphere for you and others whenever you come in contact with other animals. Grooming Preparation American bulldogs need consistent cleaning. Due to the regularity that this needs to happen, you need to get your dog used to grooming. You can simply get them used to you touching their face and petting gently in the early ages. Once they are used to that, add in a wet towel or paper towel and slowly start the grooming process. American bulldogs are easier to clean than English bulldogs because they have less wrinkles and more flexibility to clean themselves. For a quick tutorial on grooming, you can check out our YouTube video where I demonstrate a full grooming of our English bulldog, Daisy. You can begin teaching your dog basic commands once they hit six months or earlier if you feel like they are ready for it. Some basic commands to start teaching your dog are: Sit. Do American Bulldogs Bark a Lot? Therefore the following timeline should be followed to properly train them to behave appropriately. Early socialization teaches your dog that other animals and humans are not inherently dangerous. Experts recommend at least friends from smaller dogs to other dogs within the family or as outside acquaintances. Starting small will help your puppy cope with the new friends. Also, instead of random interactions, your dog will learn greater social skills if they are frequently around the same few animals. When considering a playmate for your puppy, make sure it has already been socialized. A socialized puppy will make your dog feel secure and safe. Allow your dog to socialize at its own pace. Please do not force the puppy into socializing as it will stress it, causing it to act aggressively, resulting in injuries and traumatic memory. American bulldogs are sensitive to emotions and show their uneasy behavior through aggression or chewing the closest objects. If you have no choice but to leave your dog at home while you go to work or school, get them an interactive play toy that will keep them occupied for prolonged periods. Interactive toys are a great way to keep your Bulldog from chewing your furniture. Step 3: Potty Training Teaching your bulldog puppy to potty in one location or outside is the third most crucial step in the training. Take Your American Bulldog Puppy Out Regularly Take the dog out every hour to the spot where you want the dog to excrete during the day for several days. So if your dog scratches the foot of the door or whines around the house, it means it wants to go for a potty. During training, the location plays a huge role, and it will help your Bulldog comply and be active during the day. This will reduce the chances of them going to the toilet inside and teach them where they should go. In addition, if your American Bulldog gets lost, he can always find his way home if he is familiar with the location. Puppy Stage: By 6 Months Your Bulldog puppy should be able to socialize peacefully with other dogs, chew on appropriate toys, and be ready to begin basic obedience training at this age. Teaching your pup to regulate the force of a bite is crucial. Take advantage of the stop in behavior by providing the puppy with something appropriate to chew on right away. Bones, chew toys, Kongs, squeaky toys, and stuffed animals are all good choices. Spaying and neutering are also methods to control aggression and other complications in American bulldogs. Spaying is done on female puppies, while neutering is done on male puppies. Related: When do Puppies Calm Down? Step 5: Teach Basic Commands Start teaching your dog with basic commands such as sit, stand, speak, rollover, and high five. Instead of negative or disciplinary reinforcements, use positive reinforcements. Step 6: Exercise Your Bulldog In Cool Temperatures American bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed due to their short muzzles, making breathing difficult on hot and humid days. If your dog is panting during training, take a break in a cool room. In addition, having a water bottle for your dog during training is highly recommended. Growth Stage: One Year Your Bulldog should know basic obedience and be acclimated to a daily feeding and exercise routine by the time they are a year old. American Bulldogs are prone to many health issues, and the most common among them are obesity and Hip Dysplasia. Engaging your American Bulldog in physical activities regularly helps to avoid these. In addition, there are numerous dog sports available to keep your Bulldog busy. Daily Walk A daily walk is necessary for an American Bulldog to release pent-up energy and maintain his health. The sights, sounds, and smells that your Ambull encounters during the walk will help to stimulate their minds. Because an American Bulldog can walk vast distances, the duration of the walk is only limited by your time and energy. Therefore, the minimal amount of time should be 30 to 45 minutes every day. High Intensity Activities In addition to the daily walk, it is critical to engage them in other activities that will tire and occupy them. Shorter, higher-intensity activities, as well as muscle-building and strength workouts, are examples. Training your pup with a flirt pole can help control its impulses. Flirt poles for dogs are made up of a handle, a pole, a cord, and a toy or lure that looks like a prey animal, similar to cat feather teasers. Flirt poles can provide them with an additional challenge by allowing them to chase a variety of various toys that you can attach. As your puppy chases the bait, you move it around the ground in circles or different directions. Playing Fetch with your Ambull is another fantastic way to release pent-up energy. This game can be played for hundreds of tosses by American Bulldogs, who are known for their love of balls and toys. In your backyard, set up an agility or obstacle course. You may make your agility with stuff you already have or purchase reasonably priced agility sets. Tug-of-war is a definite favorite of all strong dogs. To expend more energy, make them kneel and pull back. Ascertain that this is a managed game in which they only release when you want them to. A spring pole is famous among dogs that love tug-of-war. A spring pole is just a spring linked to a rope that swings from a tree branch or beam and has a lure or toy at the end. Mental Stimulation One of the most common reasons for behavior problems in dogs is boredom and high energy levels. Destructive behavior, annoying barking, digging, and even fleeing are examples of this. The American Bulldog is also a breed with a high level of intelligence. Therefore, to avoid boredom, it is critical to provide mental stimulation and difficulties. How to Make Your Training Effective? The American Bulldog is a challenging dog to train in the very beginning. However, once a command is mastered, the American Bulldog remembers the training well. Confine Your Pet Into A Training Area Allocating a confined space such as the backyard or an empty room for your Bulldog will reduce distraction during the early stage of training and help him concentrate. Then, when your Bulldog is familiar with the location and can do everything you command without hesitation, you can move on to the next level or location. It requires an enormous level of patience. At first, your Bulldog will not be obedient to you, but with repetition, your Bulldog will learn to follow your commands. Sticking To A Training Schedule Independent training can get messy, and you may end up repeating the training you did months ago. For example, some respond to aggressive training, while others learn to be obedient even without a leash. Hence, you may have to adopt different techniques in different situations. During training sessions, you must use positive reinforcement. If your dog has trouble hearing you at times, this is where hand gestures come in handy as your dog will be able to see you and follow your commands. Keep Lessons Short American bulldogs have a short attention span. As a result, avoid training for long periods. Consult A Professional Keep in touch with the local veterinarian as it will help you foresee any health-related issues that may arise in your dog. Also, consulting a professional trainer will help you gain tips on getting your American Bulldog under control. Your new furry friend has a lot of growing to do, and you probably have a lot of questions. Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. And have fun! Golden Retrievers reach their maturity in different stages. A Golden Retriever reaches physical maturity at the age of two, but mental maturity will not be reached until closer to the age of three. Sexual maturity will also differ for males and females, with males being able to reach sexual maturity sooner than females. Keep in mind that Golden Retrievers mature slower than other dog breeds. You will find them to be mischievous well into their adult years! A quality that many owners find endearing! During this time, your puppy is cute and cuddly and exploring his surroundings and sleeping a lot. Training should start immediately when you bring your puppy home. Being consistent with training and the rules of the house will ensure your puppy has a solid foundation of obedience skills. Your puppy will have a short attention span, so it is best to provide a variety of activities to keep your pup interested and to burn off energy. Between weeks, your puppy will go through a normal fear period. It is important to expose your puppy to a variety of sounds vacuums, cars, babies crying etc. .This is when the teething and chewing phase starts! The teething phase is done, but the chewing still persists. This stage is a long one and seems to be the most challenging when your dog is between 8 — 18 months old. During this stage, your Golden will test his boundaries, and push your buttons along the way! Between 6 — 14 months, your pup will go through a second fear period. Positive training and encouragement are needed, to help your puppy overcome his fears. A second chewing phase begins around 7 — 9 months. Sadly, this is often the time when many dog owners give up on their dogs and surrender them to a shelter. All of your hard work will pay off. Noticeable Signs Of Maturity 18 — 24 Months During these months your pup will be showing signs of physical maturity. Your Golden will have reached his full height at the one-year mark, and his full weight at 2 years. Even though your Golden is finished growing, his mental maturity has not been reached yet. At this time, however, you should already be noticing a difference in behaviour. Your Golden will likely be calmer than he was a few months ago. Many owners, myself included have noticed quite a difference at the one-year mark, and even more at the two-year mark. Keep in mind that females mature faster than males. Male Goldens may not calm down until the age of 3 or 4. Your Golden should be easier to manage at this time, compared to his rebellious teenage phase, and your consistent training will start to pay off. Your Golden will still be full of energy and require plenty of daily activity to prevent boredom. Keeping up with training, daily physical activity and mental stimulation will ensure your pup is the amazing well-mannered companion you are hoping for. Maturity 2 Years and Beyond At the two-year mark, your Golden is fully grown. Mental maturity is reached sometime between 2 years and 3 years old. This can differ between dogs, and not all Goldens will be calm at this age. It really depends on personality and gender. Many Golden Retrievers are full of energy into their senior years, and many keep up with their silly puppy-like antics. Just watch this cute Golden Retriever in the video below: However, once your Golden has reached the adult stage, it is when you really start to see the wonderful qualities of this breed. Your dog has become your companion, loving and gentle, still with plenty of energy, but is able to be calm and relax with you at home. Male Golden Retrievers can reach sexual maturity anytime after 5 months old. A 5-month-old Golden Retriever can sire puppies, but it is very rare. The first heat cycle usually occurs when your female is between 10 — 14 months old. At the age of 2, your Golden Retriever will have his full adult coat. Before this happens, you will notice your Goldens coat going through different stages of growth. When your puppy is 3 months old, the adult coat starts to grow. Goldens do not shed their puppy coat, it gets pushed aside by the new darker hair, and eventually becomes the undercoat. At 8 months, the feathering starts to become more noticeable, and by the one-year mark, the feathers are fully present along the tail, legs and belly. It takes a good 18 months to 2 years for your Goldens adult coat to be fully set. Here are some top tips to help you: Establish A Routine: This involves feeding, playing, walking, and resting at the same time each day. Dogs love routine, it makes them feel safe and secure. It also gives them structure so that they know what to expect and look forward to each day. Make sure you exercise your Golden daily. Walking, hiking, swimming, and playing fetch are all great ways to tire your Golden out. Allow Them To Be Social: Golden Retrievers are very social dogs, they absolutely love meeting people and other animals. Allowing your Golden to interact with other people and dogs is a great way to stimulate him both mentally and physically. Keep On Training: Start off with the basic commands, and go from there. Goldens are very smart and love to learn new things. What about stealing the tv remote? Your Golden is doing these things to get your attention. It gives them a purpose and they will feel proud. It happens with a lot of work, patience and of course age. Young Golden Retrievers are naturally more high-energy, but in time they will start to become more mellow. Final Thoughts As we have learned, Golden Retrievers mature in stages. At 2 years old your Golden will be physically mature, he will have reached his adult weight and height, and his mature coat will be fully set. But his brain may not catch up until the age of 3. Regardless of when your Golden Retriever reaches maturity, you should enjoy every Golden moment! Life is just too short with these wonderful dogs! When did you notice that your Golden Retriever has matured? At what age did your Golden start to calm down? Share your thoughts and comments below. I would love to hear from you. Jenny I am the proud owner of a Golden Retriever named Ellie. She keeps me busy, and when she is resting, you can find me working on my blog. She is always close by though. Puppy which begins at birth and continues until the end of rapid growth, generally lasts between months depending on the breed of the dog. Puppies have a sensitive period for socialization which runs roughly between three weeks and three months. Below are some things to consider for safety, nutrition, socialization and training: Purchase books and videos by professional positive reinforcement trainers and behaviorist. Puppy proof your home- keep electrical cords safely away from chewing, toxic materials should be stored in a safe place including medications and plants. Provide your puppy with appropriate chew items, toys and games. Supervise your puppy at all times or make sure they are in a safe pen or crate area no free roaming without supervision. Safety: Crate training, on leash, fenced yards, transportation safety restraint, temperature in cars, no riding in open truck or with windows wide open. Consult your veterinarian for approval and get your puppy started in a puppy class at weeks. Puppies should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first deworming. They should be kept up-to-date on vaccines throughout the class. This is something that your puppy class will help with if they have supervised play time with other puppies. If you have a well-mannered older dog, they may help you in teaching your puppy or young dog proper etiquette. Puppies will often follow and mimic older dogs behaviors. Enjoy, love and be kind to your puppy at all times. Young Adult starts when the puppy stage ends, and young dogs go through a period where they are still maturing both socially and physically. This stage usually lasts to about years of age. If your dog has behavioral issues fear of loud noises, aggression, separation anxiety, food guarding, excessive barking, etc. Some dogs may not enjoy being petted or made over by lots of new people in a structured setting, but they would be outstanding in nose work or dock diving. Dogs burn energy three ways; with their paws, brain and mouth. Mature Adult stage continues for the next quarter of their expected lifespan. At this time, you and your dog have a routine and they are well trained and happy. Below are some suggestions and signs you should look for as your dog matures: Continue to keep your dog active in physical and mentally stimulating activities that are suitable for their age. Make sure they are still getting social interaction with people, animals and new environments. Behavior changes can be due to medical problems and not out of spite. If a potty-trained dog starts urinating in the house, it may be a sign that there is an underlying medical problem that should be examined by a veterinarian. Consult your veterinarian as soon as possible if you have concerns. Seniors are in the last quarter of their life. This is a time that you may need to alter things in your home so that your dog can easily get around and be supported properly. Non-skid rugs or mats, harnesses, doggie boots, ramps, and orthopedic beds may be needed at this time. Senior dogs can still enjoy walks, car rides and fun activities; being with you is their greatest desire. Moderate activity, nutrition and frequent health examinations are key to keeping your best friend happy, healthy and enriched in their golden years. Below are some geriatric symptoms to be aware of: Weakness, lethargy. And also cover how you can determine if your Golden is too fat or too thin to ensure your puppy is as healthy as possible. Females are generally smaller, weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .Differences Between Individuals At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. This means at 3 months, your puppy could weigh about 22 pounds, and at 6 months, they could weigh roughly 44 pounds. Golden Retriever Puppy Growth Chart 8 weeks. Golden Retrievers Golden Retrievers make wonderful family pets because they are always sweet, loving, and loyal. They will follow you adoringly from one room to the other because they love spending time with their owners. Golden Retriever females are more likely to be calmer than their male counterparts because they tend to mature faster obedience-wise. If you are thinking of owning a Golden Retriever or you have already adopted one, it would be ideal to know their behavioral characteristics to understand how well they cope with humans. The puppy phase of Golden Retrievers Before you adopt or choose a Golden Retriever to be your family dog, it is important to know that this dog breed is known to be very active, and attention-seeking. They tend to act like puppies from the time they start growing until around 2 or 3 years old. How much your Golden Retriever will calm down after this age gap depends on the specific dog itself. There are situations where your Retriever may maintain their energy throughout their entire lives while others taper off in their later stages of life. The golden retriever puppy phase can last a while It is important to give your Golden Retriever affection, daily exercise, and training so they can live the happiest and healthiest life. There have been notions amongst dog owners that neutering or spaying their dogs can help calm them down. On the contrary, the procedure only keeps the dog calmer for a shorter period while they recover from fatigue. This is why you should not spay or neuter your puppy until it is at least a year old. Locking your puppy in a kennel or crate for hours during the day can cause a buildup that leads to destructive behaviors. You can keep them busy with walks, runs, toys, and games of fetch. Giving your Retriever puppy at least two intervals of exercise per day that lasts about five minutes. You can add an extra 5 minutes to their exercise time for each month they age. After the puppy phase, your Golden Retriever will have learned all the ropes and the activity levels may start to decline. After much training and exercise over the past 3 years, you should have a well-behaved Golden Retriever by now. Since every dog is unique, it can be difficult to be specific on when your specific Retriever will mellow out. Some Golden Retrievers can remain hyper throughout their entire life. However, most of them will turn from playful into mannered and well-spirited adults if they are properly trained and exercised. The benefits of training your Golden Retriever Develops strong bond with the owner Early training establishes a strong between your Golden Retriever and you as the owner. The only way you can remain in control is to achieve a higher level of respect from your dog. In addition to poor listening or inability to respond to commands, an untrained Golden Retriever may turn out to be a misbehaved one and a nuisance to the family. Maintains a clean and odor-free home A trained Golden Retriever will always be calm and gentle around the house, especially when they have been taken through the kennel and potty training. It makes everything comfortable when your puppy knows when and where to take nature calls at home. If you want your Golden puppy to treat your home with respect, you need to train him on how to live with the rest of your family. Lives a fuller and varied lifestyle Your Golden Retriever will live a fuller and much more varied life if he is well-behaved and can be taken with you everywhere you go. A well-behaved Golden Retriever can be allowed to run free off the leash and come back nicely when called. Golden Retrievers have always been the perfect dog breed for families, service, therapy, and shows. They are quite active when it comes to activity levels and may act like puppies for as long as 2 to 3 years old. It is important to give your Golden puppy good amounts of exercise and training so they can learn to cope with your family and live their lives to the fullest. Post navigation. Golden Retrievers are first and foremost working dogs. These dogs were bred to retrieve game and other hunted prey their owners had killed. But that means they have plenty of inherent energy that they need an outlet for. This is either a blessing or a curse, depending on how the owner looks at it. Both these breeds are very similar in temperament, which makes them both the most popular dog breeds in the country. They are high-energy, fun-loving and active breeds, with very similar needs. If you have a hyper dog, then chances are that the problem has already arisen. The Golden Retriever is one such breed. A hyper dog is a frustrated one and will demonstrate lots of unwanted behaviors that are harder to stop the longer they go on. Chewing, barking loudly , scratching, moulting and even biting and other aggressive behaviors can all be the result of a frustrated dog with too much energy to burn off. Dogs need more than just physical exercise. Golden Retrievers are incredibly intelligent, and they love to use their brains. Affordable, no price hikes, and a complete dog attitude change. Playing with them is a vital way to curbing biting, especially if the bites are too forceful. But chewing is another issue. Dogs have very strong jaws and as they mature and they lose their baby teeth, they find relief in chewing and can even clean their teeth this way. Your Golden Retriever puppy will begin to explore the world with his mouth between the ages of 3 and 6 months, and chewing begins as a way to curb the ache of teething jaws. By the time your dog is a year old, the chewing should definitely have stopped. They may still enjoy a chew toy, of course, but destructively chewing your property is a sign your dog has a behavioral issue that needs addressing. Golden Retriever males who are sexually mature display this by lifting their legs to urinate. Females are very fertile when on heat and males from miles around can pick up the scent. Males should be neutered once fully mature, so around the age of 12 months. Early spaying of a female will reduce the risk of mammary and uterine cancers. Long walks and plenty of play will tire him out. Give your Golden Retriever some mental stimulation. Obedience Training is vital. Dogs need discipline and routine. Have them socialize with other dogs. Playing with other dogs is a great way for you and your pet to meet others. A hyper dog can play up for attention, so walk away. Check their environment. Look at your own behavior. Check in with the vet. Training and stimulation while your Golden Retriever is still young will mean the crazy days will soon be a thing of the past and the result will be a steadfast companion.

silver sable german shepherd puppies for sale uk - Skin diseases 1. Respiratory System: One of the important things to mention about this dog breed is that the Boxer dog is a brachycephalic dog breed. It means that their skull has a different shape as compared to another dog. So just like all these dog breeds, Boxer dogs will snore a lot and the reason is their specific skull anatomy. Snoring is not considered a serious health condition. However, it is due to airflow obstruction which can result in some other serious respiratory diseases. Heart Conditions: Having a purebred Boxer puppy, there are likely chances that it will inherit health problems that are specific to its breed. Boxers are medium-sized dogs and are prone to different heart conditions. Heart disease is very common in Boxer puppies so much so that the disease got its name Boxer cardiomyopathy. This condition in Boxer dogs is also known as Arrhythmogenic Right 3. Breathing difficulties, heart murmurs, coughing, fainting and other symptoms can be seen in the early life of these dogs usually during the first year. However, not all Boxer dogs will inherit this condition. Canine hip dysplasia Depending upon the body type and size of the Boxer dog, there are chances that it may suffer from hip dysplasia. This disease is also an inherited trait but this condition can also be due to injuries. Another term used for describing hip dysplasia is dislocation of the hip joint. Usually, you will find this condition in medium to large-sized dog breeds such as German Shepherds, Labrador Retriever, the Great Dane etc. This is a very painful health problem and the dog can feel difficulty in rising and moving and can suffer from depression, lethargy, loss of muscle mass and weakness in the hind legs. Why is it important to choose Reputable Boxer Breeder? Choosing the right Boxer breeder is very important as most things depend on this. You are already familiar that this breed is prone to different health problems. A reputable breeder will do predictive genetic testing and health tests to predict the health risk of Boxer dogs. Rescue boxers are typically older dogs who have been surrendered or abandoned—it's a rare day when we have a puppy or even a younger dog to adopt. We try to place dogs as quickly as we can, but since many of them come from broken or abusive households, we deliberately take our time to research the person or families who wish to take one into their care. At this point in the rescue's life we want to do our best to make their next stop their final home, so we appreciate your patience in this process and your commitment to providing the rescue a permanent home. We're looking for people who want to make the next years of a rescue's life their finest ones. Some of our best adoptions have come from people who were dead-set on a certain age, color and sex of boxer and end up having their heart stolen by a completely different dog—we encourage you to put aside any aesthetic expectations and just come looking for a dog you can fall in love with and one that will fall for you! Our organization is made up of dozens of people who have taken in dozens more boxers over the decades—we'll encourage you to talk and build relationships with some of these people so you and your new rescue can benefit from their experience. We believe in what we do and encourage you to contact us—we're always looking for another loving home for a rescued boxer. Follow us on Facebook! We have been adopted by that most irrepressible of clowns, that most intuitive of comforters, that most selfless of companions - the Boxer. He will make you laugh; he will make you cry; he will try your patience; he will outwit you when he can. And he will love you with an intensity that will surprise and amaze you. He will be your canine soul mate. We want to ensure we make the right decision for the dog and the potential family. Harley was surrendered to us because he became paralyzed three weeks previously and his family was unable to care for him any longer. As well as the physical and financial considerations, they live in a rural area and lacked access to specialized veterinary care. It was with great trepidation that we agreed to take Harley. We are just a small, self funded rescue group. We don't have very deep pockets. We knew even getting a diagnosis for Harley would be beyond our means, let alone the cost of his care and treatment after the diagnosis. Once Harley was in our care and we saw his fighting spirit, his battle became ours. Harley is such a trooper, with such an incredible spirit he deserved a chance to live. After diagnostics and a MRI Harley appeared to have had a hemorrhage in his spinal cord that caused a clot and burst. With aggressive and intensive physiotherapy the vets are cautiously optimistic that Harley will overcome his paralysis and go on to lead a normal life. Harley is no longer with us but in his honor we continue our fundraising efforts in order to help other the other boxers that find their way to Boxer Rescue Canada. If funds are available, we occasionally are able to assist a families who face extraordinary veterinary expenses with their boxer. Please help support Boxer Rescue Canada by taking part in our semi-annual auction which are held on Harley's Angels facebook page. The auctions are held in November and May.
