So, if you are not going to use a professional dog trainer — Here are some tips to begin: 1 Develop your basic command words: Find the keywords you think you will use most like Sit, Stop, and Fetch etc. It will become its nest and it will feel safe and sleep there. Any mix from purebred dogs, could have congenital health problems. A German Shepherd and an American Pitbull Terrier cross breed could develop: Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a mal-formation of the hip joint, where the ball at the top of the leg does not fit properly into the socket and the ligaments attaching it are weak. This allows excess movement of the fitting which can eventually lead to stiffness and pain for the dog. This active dog could have hip problems, causing pain when moving. Early warning signs are — stiffness when getting up or walking, reluctance to get up when prompted and its usual walking style can change. It can occur early or later in life. The only way to check is to trace the health history of the birth parents. There is no cure but a Vet will help with medication to manage the pain. Skin problems Atopic dermatitis They can develop allergies causing skin conditions and itching — from grass, mold, pollen etc. Bloat Gastric Dilatation-volvulus Affects many deep-chested, larger dog breeds that like to eat large volumes quickly, drink too much water after eating or even eat too close to exercising. Early signs are: restlessness after eating, a bloated stomach and an inability to reject excess air or food through ineffective retching. In each case it is important to seek medical help! Exercise: This will be a very active dog, with lots of energy and need lots of exercise. They like to play chase and fetch. A puppy needs hours of exercise every day and more when older otherwise it will get bored. It will love running around and adventures but not adapt to small spaces. Therefore not suited to apartment living. Remember: Puppies should not be exercised too much on hard ground as their paws are still delicate so a mix of hard and softer ground is recommended until they are at least 2 years of age. Leash training is strongly recommended for discipline, safety and control in the early years. Feeding: Feed as an active large-sized dog with a recommended type of specially-formulated dry food. A Vet will advise the food type, exact amount, how often and if they need extra mineral and vitamins. Puppies should have their daily amount split into 3 daily feeds. Be careful not to over-feed them as weight gain can put pressure on their hips. Grooming: This dog has a short to medium length coat of hair that does shed but not too much so it only needs to be brushed times a week. A good brush is recommended. Bathing: This dog has short hair like the Pitbull so bathing is only recommended when needed, but not too often as their coats contain natural oil; which can be stripped with over-bathing. Certain shampoos have the double effect of cleaning the coat and protecting it against fleas and insect bites. Chewing helps, so use doggie chew toys, bare bones, soft tooth brushes and toothpaste. Nails grow quickly and need to be trimmed regularly, say once a month, and checked for infection. Their floppy ears need to be regularly checked for dirt build-up or infection. Anything unusual should be checked by a Vet. What is life like for a GSPM? Otherwise, with their high energy levels they may show their boredom through destroying or chewing things and barking. They can make a great family dog. Remember just how active this dog is before choosing one. How much does it cost? Always best to adopt rather than buy if you can. It will help lessen confusion and misunderstanding about them. You will also have a better insight into what you should expect about your mixed dog breed. There is a mistaken belief that the breed is highly aggressive due to its being a mix of a Pit bull and German Shepherd. The aggressive behavior can be due to the abuse that the canine receives or lack of proper training to discipline its behavior. Pitbull German Shepherd Mix Breed Personality The dog has a calm, loyal, and affectionate personality toward its owner. Since this breed has the traits of a German Shepherd and Pitbull, it can be very protective of its owners and home. The canine will also have leadership traits and will often try to dominate other dogs. Finally, this dog likes to receive attention from its owner as well as spend quality time bonding. How to Train a German Shepherd Pitbull Training and socialization are essential in instilling discipline in a dog. The truth is that the canine is a mild-mannered and calm animal. The best age to train German Pitbull mix puppies is when they are seven weeks old. You can still train an adult dog, but it will be a tough training time. But do not be alarmed, any dog breed has health issues. Regular check-ups can mitigate or prevent those problems. Here are some examples of health problems affecting a German Pitbull: Skin Irritation — Pitbull dogs tend to suffer from this common skin problem, and because of this, these dogs also suffer from it. Bites from insects as well as ticks and fleas are the main culprits of the problem. Flea and tick treatment products, Omega 3 and six fatty acids, and a proper diet will help deal with skin irritation. Hip dysplasia — As the dog grows older, its hip joint loosens or becomes unstable. Pitbulls and German Shepherds are prone to this problem. Be careful also not to overexert the canine when it comes to physical activities. If the bloat is left alone, it will eventually kill the dog. You should also ensure that they are provided with a proper diet that will nourish their athletic and active bodies. Depending on the type of coat it inherits from its parents, you can have a puppy with a short to medium coat. Bathing a German Pitbull is a good thing, but avoid over washing the canine. It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. If your Poodle is not as active as they should be, this means that they will require fewer calories than their active counterparts. Many dogs are self-regulating, meaning that they will stop eating when they have had enough; so, a picky eater may simply know when they have taken in what they need for the day. Poodles should be walked at least 20 minutes a day at a pace that is brisk for them, as well as have at least one daily session of free-run cardio, like fetch. Step 3: Do not let snacks get in the way of meals. Estimated feeding guidelines for dogs assume that owners are offering 2 to 3 small snacks per day. This said, dogs do have varying taste and should be giving a protein that they tolerate and find delicious at least to the degree that a picky eater will concede to. Once your guy or gal realizes that you are done playing and that what is in the bowl is the only choice, canine survival instinct all but ensures that the food will be eaten. If your Poodle has not taken a bite for one hour, remove the bowl by putting it up on the counter for 20 minutes. Then, place it back down again. If needed, as each hour passes, repeat this. Stubborn dogs may very well hold out that long; but, they typically make up for it at the next meal time. A Note of Caution If your Poodle does not eat whatsoever and continues refusing food at the next planned mealtime, this points to an issue that warrants veterinary intervention. This is important because it may well be that you think your poodle is not eating enough, when in fact they are eating plenty based on their size and weight. What each portion of food should depend on not only the size of your dog but also how much exercise they have done, how regularly they are fed, and if they have eaten many treats that day. Some owners swear that sticking to a regular feeding schedule helps their poodle eat well, while others prefer to leave dry food out for their dog to pick out during the day- there is no evidence that one is better than the other so decide which one works best for your family and stick to it. Switch Food If your Poodle gradually loses interest in food over a couple of weeks, he might no longer like his current food. Add warm water or unsalted chicken or beef broth. Choose a more fragrant food. Choose a higher-quality food with a meaty aroma. Add a topping. You can add wet food or other toppings such as plain yogurt, egg, chicken, other meats, or fish. Bored of The Food Simply becoming bored of the food could also lead your poodle to turn her nose up at it. Again, ruling out health conditions with your veterinarian is always the best first step to take. This is called the rotation diet. How to do it? This is particularly helpful for two reasons, it fights boredom and you will slowly get an idea of what foods your poodle likes the most. I myself used to feed my lab only dry kibble, for years! But I no longer do it like that. Let me explain why… Not only do veterinarians fully support and recommend doing this, it just makes sense. It keeps the kibble interesting and nutritionally varied. In order to determine the treatment to give to your dog, it is important to identify what the underlying cause of the reluctance to eat is. There are different types of anorexia. True anorexia is when your dog simply refuses to eat — this is often associated with serious illnesses. You could offer them some bland home cooked food like boiled chicken and rice, which is a tasty but easily digestible diet. Try warming it up a little in the microwave, as this sometimes will entice them to eat. You could offer smaller meals more frequently. Avoid chopping and changing the diet and offering too many different types of food. Sometimes a quick change in food can cause an upset tummy, which may complicate matters. Be careful to avoid any toxic foods such as onions and garlic. If your dog is quiet, not themselves, or displaying any other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness or lethargy; or has not eaten at all for 2 days then you should seek veterinary attention. Potential causes of anorexia There are many different possible causes! They include: Illness A decline in appetite could be a sign of a significant illness such as kidney disease, liver disease , diabetes , infection bacterial or viral , fever, cancer , pyometra infection of the womb , pain anywhere in the body, not just the mouth , gastroenteritis etc. If your vet suspects one of these diseases could be the cause then they will need to run some diagnostic tests. Dental disease If your dog has oral pain due to decay, gingivitis inflammation of the gums , a broken tooth, abscess or an oral tumour then this can cause them not to eat. Environment Sometimes dogs can be quite sensitive to a change in their routine or environment. Particularly if they are in unfamiliar surroundings. Causes of stress could include moving house, taking your dog on a trip or a stay at the kennels. If they are uncomfortable with a situation they are in they may not feel like eating. For example, hot weather, being around another dog, a different food bowl, or being fed at an uncomfortable height. Medication Some medications may cause a reduced appetite or nausea. If your dog is taking a new course of medication and this occurs, you should let your vet know. Vaccinations Vaccines prevent some serious, often fatal, infectious diseases in dogs. If food has been left out, or not stored in an airtight container then it will go rancid after a while. What is the treatment for anorexia? Treatment will very much depend on what the underlying cause of the anorexia is. Often once this has been addressed, their appetite will return to normal. Sometimes this may take a few days and additional measures may be required. This is passed into the oesophagus food pipe so your dog can receive a liquid diet via the tube. Finding and treating the underlying cause is the best way to approach this situation. To get your dog back up and about again.

Please consider that your lifestyle may change. You may not have the same job where you are able to come home at lunch, you may not have the same roommate, you may graduate from school or move to a smaller house. You may have a baby, get married or get a divorce. If you think that you may not be able to make a lifetime commitment to one of our Boxers, then we kindly request you reconsider adoption. No dog is ever perfect, just like people are not perfect. It requires work to make things work. Your expectations needs to be realistic. Do you have small children or a baby? Boxers are similar. They need love, attention and an opportunity to learn too. Are you familiar with the breed? If not, you may want to look into fostering with us before making a decision to adopt. Boxers are a highly affectionate breed and very energetic. Do you have the financial means to care for the dog? Annual food and medical cost can add up. Are you older and wanting to adopt a young energetic dog? Please think about more mature dogs that need homes. Everyone wants a young dog … if you are a mature human being, please consider more mature dogs that have been waiting for their forever homes for a while. Before you fill out this application, please read our Adoption Criteria. This is required reading, and it will answer many questions you may have. Dog must be an inside dog. It is OK to have an outside dog run with inside access. This is because Boxers must be protected from heat and cold. You are not required to have a fenced yard. However, if you do not, you will need to take the dog out for a potty break at least 4 times a day, more if they do not feel well. Same goes for a home with a low fence. If you are looking to adopt a puppy, please be realistic. Any home where no one is home for more than six hours a day times a week will be rejected for puppies. We do not do female to female placements of bully breeds. That means Boxer, Bulldog, Pit bulls, etc. We will consider female to female adoption of dogs with extreme age and size difference.
