In severely deformed dogs, pectus carinatum can affect lung and heart function. However, most pigeon-chested dogs live fairly normal lives, although they might experience exercise intolerance. Related Abnormalities Pigeon-chested dogs often suffer from other abnormalities related to breastbone deformity. These include short ribs, in which the ribcage doesn't go far back enough into the abdomen, resulting in a lack of structural support. Such dogs might also exhibit abnormally thin waists, known by the term "herring-gutted. Pectus Excavatum Far more common in dogs is the chest deformity known as pectus excavatum. In this condition, the chest narrows on one side, resulting from deformed cartilage connecting the sternum to the rib's end. The dog's chest appears concave or flat. Dogs born with pectus excavatum often exhibit breathing difficulties. Severely affected dogs usually have short life spans unless they undergo surgery to correct the deformity. Older animals may require more invasive surgery, which involves the removal of part of the costal cartilage cartilage that connects the sternum to the ribs , and placement of an internal splint along the sternum. With regards to PC, the use of an external, compressive splint for the correction of the deformity has been documented in one canine patient ; however, this resulted in cyanosis and difficulty breathing, and was promptly removed. The prognosis for chest bone deformities in canines may vary depending on the severity of the abnormality. Overall, PE is considered to have a good prognosis in young animals , and even severe cases can do well with surgical correction. In humans, PC prognosis is considered to be excellent, with many affected individuals remaining asymptomatic. Similarly, symptoms in affected dogs tend to be mild, if noted at all. As such, a good prognosis is expected. Conclusion In summary, while uncommon in canines, chest bone deformities can occur and may be noted with higher frequency in brachycephalic dogs, such as pugs and bulldogs. Pain is a common complaint in human patients and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and acupuncture have been reported to help. Daily medial lateral compression of the chest or compression bandages have been described for neonatal puppies and kittens however, this is unlikely to improve severe deformities. In the case of severe pectus excavatum or in older patients, surgery is required. The two most commonly performed surgeries are the Ravitch procedure and the less invasive Nuss procedure. The Ravitch procedure involves an open surgical approach with removal of the deformed cartilage and metal bars are implanted to support the sternum. This is a long procedure with potentially significant morbidity. The Nuss procedure is performed under thoracoscopic guidance and a curved metal bar is placed and then flipped into position to raise the sternum. In older animals, an open approach is required to correct the deformity. Ostectomy of a portion of the costal cartilage is required to allow the sternum to be realigned and an internal splint, such as a bone plate, is used to keep the sternum in this position. Anesthesia in patients with pectus excavatum can be challenging. Because surgery is often performed in very young puppies and kittens, their body temperature should be carefully monitored as their thermoregulation is not fully developed and they have little fat. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding.We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. For this reason we have focused on breeding smarter puppies generation after generation. At least you have some guidelines to use when you arrive. For example, the largest puppy is not necessarily going to be the biggest one when full grown. At 8 weeks old the biggest puppy has been the one who is the pushiest at the food bowl and eats the most at feedings. This is why 8 weeks is the best time for your Lab puppy to go to bond with their human family. As some puppies get larger in size they can push the other smaller puppies around so size then becomes another factor in the development of your puppy. Take your puppy home at 8 weeks old and you have provided them time with their litter to learn puppy to puppy manners weeks 4 to 8 and you have eliminated the possibility of them being bullied by the larger pups after week 8. The larger pups also will not learn to become overly dominant because there are not smaller ones around them to boss around. What about people who want the runt? The first group feel that because the runt is smaller they will listen better when truly listening is a skill learned through training. And the second group feel that a smaller puppy is sick and weak and will not thrive. Again this is not the case as smaller puppies simply do not have as strong of a food drive than their siblings. Some people have heard to wipe a blanket where the puppy sleeps or on the mother because the scent will calm the puppy in your home. Think of it this way, if your puppy smells the mother or one of its littermates what does it do next? So a blanket with this scent on it will cue your puppy to look for someone who is likely not coming back. Imagine the frustration of a puppy newly separated from its litter being able to smell them but not find them. We suggest you do not do this to your puppy. Our suggestion to help settle the puppy only if you need to is to put a t shirt into the crate with the scent of the person who they bonded the most to. This is their new pack. Get them accustom to their new pack and the quicker they forget their old pack the easier it will be for them. Love them, set clear guidelines, and enjoy them for years to come.
