Due to these common marketing ploys the average puppy buyer sometimes mistakes such light-colored Golden Retrievers for being a separate breed. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is only one Golden Retriever breed, governed by the breed standard endorsed by various recognized Kennel Clubs around the world. The Golden Retriever Club of America would like to emphasize to breeders and puppy buyers alike that the cream color has always been part of the full spectrum of colors found in our breed. Feathering may be lighter than rest of coat. With the exception of graying or whitening of face or body due to age, any white marking, other than a few white hairs on the chest, should be penalized according to its extent. Allowable light shadings are not to be confused with white markings. Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable. Some latitude should be given to the light puppy whose coloring shows promise of deepening with maturity. Any noticeable area of black or other off-color hair is a serious fault. This broad range of color is not only commonly found around the world, but both light and dark shades can also occur in the very same Golden Retriever litter, with full siblings varying in color from very light cream to a rich gold. Some breeders favor different styles of Golden Retrievers and some may even have a personal preference for a lighter or a darker golden, but good breeders never focus exclusively on a specific color, since this would unnecessarily narrow the gene pool and may cause genetic predispositions towards hereditary health issues to become magnified over time. Beauty, Conformation, Temperament, Health We appreciate and strive for beauty and good conformation. The title of this paragraph has our priorities listed in reverse order. Health is our main priority, followed by temperament, conformation, and beauty. However, we focus on all of these qualities. It is our commitment to health as a first priority that has enabled us to now be in a position to have lines with truly good health. We currently own six dogs. Please read our page on Hip and Elbows to understand why hip testing done at over 2 years of age as recommended by the Golden Retriever Club of America gives results that are more meaningful. MANY breeders of imported Golden Retrievers have now adopted a practice of getting FCI health testing done on puppies and dogs under a year of age by unscrupulous breeders overseas. These tests are done before hips and elbows are developed and before possible hip dysplasia will show up. How We Raise Our Puppies There are always three experienced adults working full time raising our puppies a husband, wife, and adult daughter. If we should have more than two litters that overlap, our other adult daughter will also help. When puppies are here, they are our priority. Everything else in our lives takes a back seat to the puppies so we can work full time around the clock doing puppy work. Our home is large enough for all puppies to be raised inside our home. We have five doggy doors to five different puppy play yards where puppies over 5 weeks freely live coming in and out of our home. We have almost a dozen fenced areas, and a total of nine acres fenced for our dogs and puppies. By far, most that try to earn it fail. Tara and Karen earned the required points in less than a year and a half including time off for Tara to whelp and raise a litter of puppies and for Karen to raise and train dozens of other puppies. There were less than 70 dogs to earn it nationwide in .Karen has also recently won Combined High in Trial on the last day of the Southeastern regional competition. There are eleven regions in the U. The regional competitions are where the best competitors in the country compete to earn invitations to the National Obedience Competition the NOC. The NOC is the most prestigious obedience event in the country. Each region hosts only one regional competition a year and the NOC happens only once a year as well. Tara has also been invited to perform obedience at the Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster. Positive Reinforcement Training Only! Karen is one of very few trainers in the competitive obedience world who uses exclusively positive reinforcement training. Most importantly, Karen and Jenna use the same positive techniques with our puppies that have been used to create an obedience champion. The biggest requirement that keeps us from being a match for most is that someone must have considerable time for the puppy. Even if you work from home, you must have considerable time to devote to a puppy. The protein will come from readily available sources such as chicken or beef, and not exotic or boutique sources like kangaroo or venison as you saw in second study mentioned above. According to the AKC , quality, regulated animal byproducts can be good for your dog. These byproducts can include organ meats or entrails, which often contain more nutrients than, say, plain chicken breast. Another misconception is that dogs should eat grain-free diets. As you saw in the second study mentioned above, that can actually be very harmful for your dog and cause DCM. But food labels can be a little vague and confusing, so below is an explanation of what some of these terms mean, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and the AKC. There is one caveat though. For instance, flaked corn, ground corn, and kibbled corn could be sprinkled in an ingredient list and not be listed as the first few ingredients, but in reality, if you were to add them all up they are all corn, after all , you might find that this food is made mostly of corn. The same goes for chicken, chicken meal, and chicken byproduct. Meat vs. Meat Meal vs. The quality of these ingredients can vary widely, so be sure to talk to your vet about this and choose a reputable brand of food. Below are a few examples: Obesity. Golden Retrievers love food and they do have a tendency to become overweight if you let them. This problem can often affect these next two problems… Joint issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to joint issues and growing too fast because they eat too much can often make this problem worse more on this in the next section. Heart issues. Skin issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to hot spots and excess protein in their diets can be a factor that causes them. Many goldens suffer from food allergies. One cup of Brand X food may have calories per cup, while Brand Y has calories per cup. If we are lucky enough that our young golden passes, we will move forward to the next health testing stage. The next health test that we typically conduct once our young golden is 1. While they are sedated to have these x-rays we usually also have Penn Hip testing done. Also, per our vet the Penn Hip is a better test to know the overall health of the hips as they test the elasticity and movement rather then judging based on an image. Last health test we do is done at the age of 2 years old. As the dogs age their bones calcify, a dog with failing elbow or hips younger then 2 could very well change to passing once they turn 2. Under each dog there is a link from K9 data. Unfortunately K9 data will not allow preliminary testing information in the link which is the OFA elbow and hip test results if the dog is under 2 years of age when the test is conducted. However we do list the preliminary test results under each dog. Once we have the official results K9 data will be updated to reflect their latest test results. About our Puppies: I usually make the determination of puppies after 30 days of a breeding. I have my own ultrasound machine and can get a good determination of how many puppies are present. It does not give me an exact count. Only way to really narrow down the number of puppies is by an x-ray, around the day mark. I do not conduct my own x-rays and that would require a visit to the animal hospital. To reduce stress on mom and the puppies we do not do x-rays. I get a final count upon delivery keeping mom where she is most comfortable. Delivery of puppies take place in my home around the days after being bred, unless an emergency C-section requires otherwise. Typically, all our puppies are delivered naturally. Someone is always with the mother for the entire delivery. It is very strenuous but has the best outcome for both mom and pups. When all the puppies are born, we will post pictures on the Facebook page. We will then reach out to anyone on our waiting list. If by chance, there are any extra puppies we will make an announcement on Facebook after exhausting our wait list. Sometimes people back out and puppies do come up available at various times. During the initial few days into the few weeks mom and puppies are spending a lot of quality time together. We are keeping a close attention that everyone is gaining weight and seem to be progressing. The pups are handled daily by us. After about 2 weeks eyes and ears will begin to open. The fourth week they are starting to find their legs and moving around exploring. For an example if you contacted me in May for a female, and John Doe contacted me in January for a female from the same mother then John Doe will get first pick and you would get second pick.
