This teaches the puppy that biting too hard hurts and results in bad consequences, so they slowly learn to control their bite. If taken away before these lessons are learnt, the puppy will bite too hard not knowing any better and this can be very dangerous as the puppy matures into a larger and stronger dog. You would have to go through the process of teaching bite inhibition yourself and this can be difficult and even painful work! They learn about hierarchy, canine body language, posturing and vocalizations barking, growling etc. They also learn about things like chasing and how to play correctly with other dogs, also how to interact fairly and safely with other dogs. By removing a puppy too soon, it will miss out on this vital education, will be under-socialized to other dogs and this can easily result in the puppy being fearful of other dogs or just plain not liking other dogs later in life. They Learn Tolerance To Touch A dog needs to be tolerant to touch for health and hygiene reasons and the safety of those around it. And a vet will need to touch a dog all over during a medical examination. So you really need your Labrador to be tolerant of humans touching it all over. A puppy will constantly be bumped, nudged, pawed and climbed all over during its time spent with its litter-mates. This teaches the puppy not to be afraid of touch, to get used to it and be more tolerant. But if a puppy is taken too young it misses out on all this touch and could grow up disliking touch in certain areas of its body. This can result in behavioral issues and even aggression when being touched which for obvious reasons is very undesirable. The things a puppy is socialized to during its first 12 weeks have a profound effect on its level of confidence and levels of fear later in its life. From about 7 weeks onwards, the puppy is very inquisitive and its willingness to approach unknown things and people is at its peak. This period declines at about 12 weeks of age and almost completely ends at 14 weeks where fear begins to creep in as a natural trait essential to survival if it lived in the wild. This is also the time when a Labrador puppy will form their strongest bonds with the humans they spends their time with. Bringing a puppy home at 8 weeks gives you just 4 weeks to do this, bringing one home at 10 weeks gives you only 2! A lack of decent socialization can result in the puppy being fearful of things, places and of human contact. This will put the puppy at greatest ease with the people and places where it will spend its future life. You may wish to bring your puppy home earlier than 8 weeks, but for all the reasons above, you should avoid this entirely. So be very suspicious of the breeder if this is their wish. This is so they themselves can provide a further week of socialization during this critical time and for the puppy to spend more time with their mother and littermates. So for the benefit of you and your Labrador, leave them with their mother and litter-mates until 8 weeks of age. But those first weeks of puppy development are very similar whatever the breed, and these landmarks are good general rules for any dog. Puppy development week by week, changes quickly. Newborn Puppies Newborn puppies are born at the end of nine weeks of pregnancy, with their eyes and ears tightly closed. They already have a fur coat but they cannot yet control their own body temperature. They are dependent on their mother or another heat source to keep them warm. Newborn puppies may cry if cold. Obviously the teeth are appearing for a reason! Some breeders will start to offer the first tastes of solid food at this point. Especially if the litter is a large one and putting a strain on the mother dog. It is lovely to watch a litter of 3 week old puppies beginning to interact with their brothers and sisters. They are running, playing enthusiastically, and have started to wag their little tails. The puppies will start to show bowel control as they move away from the other puppies to defecate. And solid food is becoming a major part of their diet. These little pups are tucking into some puppy food. Four week old puppies having their dinner in the fresh air If the weather is warm enough, puppies will be spending some time outdoors now. Mealtimes are a messy process, so feeding puppies out in the yard can be a good idea. Breeder Involvement Some mother dogs will lose interest in cleaning up after their pups at this point or soon afterwards. And many puppies will be wormed again this week. Vocalizations are becoming stronger at this puppy development stage. The litter will greet their mother noisily when she returns to them, and try hard to follow her out of the whelping box whenever she leaves. The puppies themselves are now eating solid food several times a day and gradually being weaned of their dependency on her milk. Puppies will still suckle ravenously when their mother returns and she will now often feed them standing up and only for a short time. She will also be teaching the puppies not to bite too hard. So, they should be increasingly spending time with humans and learning to be familiar with the sounds and sights of a human family environment. Puppies being raised in kennels must be brought into a home environment regularly from now on to ensure they develop into confident, friendly dogs. Six weeks old and full of mischief Puppies Still Have a Lot to Learn at 6 Weeks In some countries, puppies are taken to their new homes at this age. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. Many breeders will arrange for each seven week old puppy to have a vet check this week. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Some breeders will now have the puppies trained to pee and poop on puppy pads or newspaper. And some will have been whistling to the puppies at meal times to get them used to coming to a human signal. Potty training is now underway and puppy socialization plans are being made. At this point, many of you will be thinking about training your puppy too. The next four weeks are vital in puppy development stages. Your main job is socializing your puppy. This means taking him to lots of new places and exposing him to lots of new experiences. So, life will be starting to get back to normal. Most puppies in the U. In the U. So, not all puppies will get their vaccinations at the exact same age. Socializing your puppy is still the most important job for you at this age. But, you cannot put your puppy on the ground outside until they have received their final vaccination. So, make sure you know exactly when their final jab is. And carry on introducing them to as many new people, things, and experiences as possible throughout this puppy development stage. Some people can suffer from the puppy blues at this stage too, as your life has completely changed! But, that does not mean socialization can stop. Puppies who are isolated at this point will soon lose that friendly fearlessness. You have an important job now, building on what has been achieved so far, and introducing your puppy to the world at ground level. This part of his education can begin once his vaccination cover is complete. He should be fully immunised at around this point. But check with your vet for confirmation of the actual date. Three months also marks the point at which many puppies will drop down from four daily meals, to three. This can cause problems for some puppies because the portions are larger If your puppy gets an upset tummy when you make this change, just go back up to four meals again for a few days, and give smaller portions for a few days when you try again. But, many will need another month before they can cope without frequent bathroom breaks and the occasional accident. Your puppy will begin to lose his baby teeth. This can also be a time at which biting can be most challenging. And try not to worry, this stage will soon be over! A few will need another month or two to complete the process. Remember, no two puppies are the same. That puppy fluffiness will have gone. For many puppies, five months is an awkward, gangly time. A five month old puppy may have shed the last of his soft puppy lines and be looking quite skinny. By the end of this month most puppies will have finished teething but an urge to chew may continue for another few months in some breeds, Labradors included. Some female dogs will have their first season during this month. But, for many, it will be another three or four months before this happens. This is a major milestone for your puppy. He is now looking very much like an adult Labrador. Still a Puppy Because he looks quite grown up, people expect a lot of their 6 month old puppy. But inside, he is still very much a puppy. The beginnings of adolescence and with it an increasing independence of spirit can bring its challenges, but also a whole lot of fun. I argue that picking a puppy has more to do with picking the right litter. The gene pool is exactly the same for every puppy in the litter. Is the puppy aggressive with her littermates? Maybe he is one of the more passive pups. There are all kinds of anecdotal methods to determine whether a puppy is passive or aggressive; happy or scared; outgoing or reserved. I have seen people hold puppies on their backs to see how much they fight against a vulnerable position. If you puppy just lays there and waits for you to release them, you have a passive pup. If the puppy fights against that position, wait and see how long he fights. This will give you a way to gauge his aggressiveness compared to his littermates. Squeeze Test The squeeze test is really simple, and it will help prepare your 7-week-old Lab puppy for training right now. In fact, if you use this right, the squeeze test actually becomes a part of the first training schedule. To do the drill, just pick your puppy up in your arms and wait for his response. At some point, your new Lab puppy is going to start squirming. Your natural response might be to put him down. Instead, give him a gentle squeeze and maintain the slightest pressure. Your Lab might immediately relax and wait for you to release the pressure. Others might fight against the pressure and squirm even more. At some point, even the most insistent and determined Lab pups will stop struggling against your gentle hug. When they stop, you immediately release the pressure. If he starts struggling again, then reapply the gentle pressure until he stops. It should not take too long before your new Lab puppy figures out that if he stops struggling the pressure comes to an end. You are looking for your puppy to wait patiently in your arms for 8-seconds. When he has been still for an 8-count, then you can put him down and let him run away. Pretty quick, your dog will go completely still as soon as you give him a gentle squeeze. When his butt hits the ground, I release the pressure. Start Squeeze Test Training with your Lab Puppy Immediately You should start using the squeeze test every day as soon as you get your little guy or gal home. Some new dog owners might think that this is not really training. Maybe, but the truth is that you are always training your dog. So, from the very beginning your Lab puppy is taking cues on the expectations in his new home. You may wait to start formal training, but your Lab puppy is not going to wait to start building habits. If you wait to start setting expectations which is all training is at any level , then your first lessons will have to address the bad habits your pup has developed in the absence of good training. Tom Dokken suggests that you do this drill with your Retriever puppy at least 20 times a day. Where am I supposed to find time to do this with my puppy 20 times every day? Let everyone participate I remember reading in an old dog training book that you should only be the one that feeds your dog because it builds that relationship between the two of you. The problem is that it can also cause your Lab to ignore everyone else in the family. Well, I am picking up a new puppy today. Odin is a 7-week-old, Yellow Lab puppy, and I am going to show my wife how to do the squeeze test. We are going to start training tonight. Every member of the family is going to take a turn. Then, I am going to ask every member to do the drill 4 times with Odin every day. That means that my brand-new Lab puppy will get 25 to 30 training sessions every day. Odin will also learn that he needs to listen to every member of my family. Socialization The squeeze test is not the only training that I will start tonight. It is not even the most important thing that I will do with my Lab puppy during these early stages at home. I think the most important thing you will do with your new Lab puppy is social training. I watch the dogs every time to see how they react to this new environment because it tells me where I need to start with each. Some dogs bound out of the truck and nearly run me over, and those dogs are the ones that can start training right away. Those dogs, I know from plus years of training experience, will take some extra work. It is not a lack of intelligence or drive or anything else. How do you socialize a Lab puppy? When I talk about socializing a new puppy, I just mean getting him exposed to as many new things as soon as he is ready to experience them. For example, I am going to hold off on shotguns for now. But, the banging of pots and pans and my kids screaming and running around will be a great way to prepare him for that later on. How do I start? Well, when I get Odin home tonight, we will start social training right away by taking him to the park across the street from our house. There are tons of kids there and that is exactly what I am looking for when I want to start social training a Lab pup. Guess what kids want to do when they see a puppy? They want to pet him. I am going to ask if they want to hold him instead. This is going to expose Odin to new people including their smells. The more he experiences different people the more he is going to think this is normal. That is what I want. A dog that is comfortable with lots of new experiences. If your Lab looks forward to new things, introducing new steps in the training process as he develops will be simple and natural. On the other hand, if you wait until he turns 3 or 4 months-old before starting the training process, you could have a huge challenge dealing with a shy, scared Labrador. Working with your puppy, even if you are doing it wrong, is better than not training him at all. At least you are establishing yourself as someone that you puppy can trust and look to for direction. Crate Training If you are still hung up on that old standard that you cannot train your Lab puppy until three or four months, then what about crate training? That starts immediately. Crate training Labrador puppies should start as soon as you get them home. Well, if your dog is ready to start crate training as soon as he comes home, what else can he learn? Crate training is also a good measure of what your training should look like. If you are crate training your puppy correctly, there is no discipline. I even try to avoid displeasure in my voice because I think Labs are super cued into you and your attitude. Instead, I try to put my puppy in situations where they will succeed often enough that it will become habit. So, if my pup has an accident in the crate, then I am going to blame myself. It means that I did not get him out soon enough. Check out this article for the crate training specifics. Get your puppy into a situation where he will succeed and then reward him so that he wants to succeed again in the future. I get that, but there are other things about Labradors that you need to consider. For example, as the bond with your Lab builds, he is going to have a stronger and stronger desire to please you. This is one of the Lab characteristics that makes Labradors so trainable. But, right now, your Lab puppy needs a little extrinsic motivation to follow your commands. This is where treat come in to the training picture. Rest assured that you will not need them forever. Right now, however, treats are an awesome way to introduce some really basic obedience commands that will be critical regardless of what you hope to accomplish with your dog. Obedience Training Obedience training is going to be an important factor in how successful your puppy is at integrating with your family. Every time you go outside, as your puppy gets older, you will rely on the foundation of obedience and expectations that you give your puppy right now. Lots of people get older dogs and teach them to be obedient. They must, however, overcome the bad habits that the dog developed leading up to that point. If you start training your Lab puppy early, you can avoid that tedious, and often frustrating, part of dog training. You need to remember that your puppy is young so go slow—but go! Here are some of the basic commands that you can introduce to your Lab puppy really soon. Save to Pinterest The Stages of Puppy Growth and Development Month by Month The following are the stages of puppy growth and development, starting at birth and ending when your dog reaches adulthood. The Neonatal Stage 0 to 2 weeks This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until two weeks of age. At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. Expect puppies at this point to sleep almost constantly and their mother will take care of everything, keeping them warm, feeding them, and keeping them clean. The Transitional Stage 2 to 4 weeks At this puppy growth stage , they will start to open up their eyes and respond to sounds, light, and movement around them. You will also notice a puppy at this point starting to get more mobile, although they will still tend to crawl instead of walking. They do, however, have enough strength to stand up, but will stumble a lot. A puppy in this developmental stage will just be starting to recognize their siblings and mother. Lab puppies open their eyes at about two weeks old. By this time, Labrador puppies will have their eyes fully open and most will be at least partly open. Ears open at this point too and your puppy will begin to hear. Period of Awakening of Senses 3 to 4 weeks At this period , a puppy develops various senses rapidly. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. The Juvenile Stage 3 to 4 Months At this point in development, a puppy can be compared to a juvenile. They will be more independent and may ignore the basic commands that they know very well. If this happens, firmly and gently reinforce the commands and other training. You may also notice your pup starting to test your authority by play biting or similar actions. You can also redirect your dog to a toy that they can bite. Either can end up teaching your pooch that it is okay to fight with you and challenge your authority. The Ranking Period 3 to 6 Months When your puppy is between four and six months old, you should expect them to be somewhat bratty, showing more willfulness and independence. They are more likely to test your limits and may try to show dominance over children or other family members. If they fail to listen to you or come when called, it can be dangerous as it puts them at risk of injury when in public. It can also hurt future responses to you, making them less likely to listen. This is also when your dog will be teething, so give them toys like frozen dog Kong toys to relieve pressure and pain. Chewing behaviors will also start growing at this point so look for some safe chew toys to keep your dog entertained. This is when hormonal changes start to occur and is the ideal time to spay or neuter your pup. Adolescence 6 to 18 Months After six months, your pup is already in the final stage of puppy development but is still young. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant. During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization. It fits very well and is quite apt! Final Thoughts With the knowledge of how and when your new puppy will develop, you are better able to meet their needs. Provide socialization at the appropriate times and be sure to give your puppy plenty of social interactions with their siblings as well as humans and any other pets in your home. But did you know a third colorway occurs in this timeless breed? Near-white Golden Retrievers also known as English Golden Retrievers are increasingly sought-after by dog-lovers because of their stunning sheen and easy-going temperament. Still, why do some Golden Retriever puppies pop out nearly white while others remain a traditional golden-yellow? And are lighter variants legitimate to the history of the breed? The short answer bears good news: White-coated Golden Retrievers are true to the breed because the American Kennel Club does officially recognize them. What is an English Golden Retriever? The latter color is typically associated with American Golden Retrievers, while the former links back to English lineage. Though bloodlines become blurry with time and cross-breeding, most genetic experts can trace light-golden Retrievers back to the U. The exact differences between white Golden Retrievers and American Golden Retrievers comes down to bloodline and breeding standards controlled by high-quality breeders. Regardless, all three coat colors meet the breed standard, meaning a white Golden Retriever is the same breed as a true Golden Retriever. While English and American Golden Retriever puppies meet the breed standard across the board, slight genetic differences have developed over time, creating unique DNA makeups for each variant. In fact, white Golden Retriever puppies have risen in popularity over the past decade, closing the gap between traditional yellow Golden Retrievers. At first glance, coat color genetics can seem intense and sophisticated. However, a little digging will reveal two primary components that make up fur variations: Eumelanin and pheomelanin. Both eumelanin and pheomelanin are pigments that influence the coat color of Golden Retrievers. The former is the black gene, while the latter is the red gene. For example, both pigments are modified by other gene variations, effectively diluting and enhancing each baseline color to create different coat colorways. Modifiers and Variations The Golden Retrievers dog breed has three primary genes B, E, and C that determine whether they have red, golden, or white coats. These three genes — also known as regions — are located on the chromosome and host pairs of alleles that dictate coat color and intensity. Because each litter receives chromosomes from the dam and sire, long lines of health-tested, well-bred dogs produce the finest offspring. The B Region Site B hosts the black colorway in Golden Retrievers, which is why Goldens will have a black nose and paw pads except for mutation or health conditions regardless of their coloring. Typically, a dominant B would indicate black or brown fur. However, Golden Retrievers have a unique relationship to the B region due to a recessive masking e gene. The day we decided to get Dayzee Mae, we found her breeder and setup a time to go meet. We discussed what we would name her, and choose the name Dayzee Mae because of the meaning mentioned above. We arrived to meet the pups and running all around were many different puppies all boxers but fawns, males and females. Not really being as interactive as her siblings was this gorgeous brindle girl. I asked if this is the one we called on, and he said yes. She seemed a little shy, but was the most gorgeous boxer that I had ever saw and she started messing with my shoe strings. I picked her up and she seemed to speak to me. I think I was born part dog, or at least with a unique set of skills, that allow dogs and myself to be as one, like we truly understand each other, because she clearly said she wanted to come home with us, as odd as that may sound to some. We carried her into the house, and was going through the paperwork and the breeder mentioned that he had been calling her Daisy May but we could name her whatever we wanted and we just stopped him in his tracks and explained that we had already choose her name, and it was Dayzee Mae.SHE was meant to be my girl! From the beginning this girl rocked our world and not always in a good way. We were sitting on our back deck and she drops and starts convulsing and this was a few days of having her. Rushed her to the Vet and she had really low blood sugar, so she was treated, we learned what to do if it happened again which thankfully never did. I was going to conformation show her, and so we decided to have her ears cropped. After thousands of dollars later, her ears were a mess, scarred, however somewhat repaired, but you know what.But she quickly became one of the most expensive dogs I had ever owned in my life, still to date. Don't worry her bloodline is not part of any of my breeding dogs, Dayzee Mae was spayed. Dayzee Mae went through training and was a star, when she wanted to be LOL. We probably went through hundreds and hundred of dollars, every weekend stopping and buying different kinds of treats, to get her to like something, to gain drive to train. Nothing worked, ever! So we started thinking outside the box. Dayzee Mae loved to lick the lollipops, well.Even Lollipops she started to get bored with. Everyone said try chicken. So I boiled some chicken, and nope, still not good enough for her. I would not feed her dinner, to try to increase her drive, but it did not work. She was the most stubborn, dog I had ever met in my life. One day, I cracked open a can of white chicken to make a quick chicken salad, and Dayzee Mae who was clear upstairs, came hauling down like a herd of elephants, to see what that smell was. I thought to myself, did I just find the "magic" food. Oh boy, did I ever! From that moment on, Dayzee Mae shined like the brightest star! She was so smart, that she would do about anything, and quickly to get a bite of her canned chicken. She became my rockstar in training! She was the most well behaved, social butterfly, dog and everyone loved her. She looked scarey when she walked up to you, with those messed up ears, and she was a big girl, 98lbs. But she never met a stranger in her life! Her bean butt would start going as soon as you spoke to her. She just loved and loved. She was my best friend! If I was upset over anything, she was right in my face, making me smile. She would give me bite kisses, yell at me if I was gone to long, and get on my table to watch out the window, and pout if I left without her, but stood by my side when I needed her most, always letting me know it would be ok, and she was usually right. The day came that Dayzee Mae was not feeling well, went to Iowa State University Veternarian after our normal vet's treatment was not working the week prior and learned that day she had Lymphoma. I was so angry and hurt! They told me, she was stage 4, all throughout her body, and honestly I was lucky she was still alive it was that bad. I left her there to start treatement, even though the vets said it was to bad, I did not care, I would spend thousands and thousands if it meant having more time with my girl!!! I drove all the way home, bawling of course, and pulled into my drive, and thought to myself, she would not do this to me. She would not want me to be sick, she would not leave me in some cold, sterile place without the people I love, just to by time. She would want to be with me. So I turned around, drove back, went in and told them, if I only have a short amount of time with my girl, then its going to be the best time together. They sent me home with prednisone, and told me I would be lucky to have until the end of the week. And guess what? She did not act sick, not in pain, and she ate her food everyday and took her medication and was by my side the entire time. I told her to tell me when she was ready, because I would not let her suffer. The day came, she wouldn't eat, and the look on her face that day, told me it was time. You see, Dayzee Mae, I truly believe was here to teach me not only about the boxer, but more about life. About resilence, strength, compassion, love, and to keep going and moving forward and also not forget to stop and smell the Dayzee Mae's along the way. You give me that joy, time and time again, that I felt when I got my own Dayzee Mae all those years before and for that I am honored and thankful!!!
