Certainly for my first dog he's 5 now that was the mainstream approach but more recently I'm seeing a lot more advice from behaviourists and trainers to be with your dog until they have the confidence to settle on their own. For some that's having the dog upstairs by the bed, for me this meant sleeping on the sofa close to my most recent puppy now approaching 2 until he was quiet at night. He wasn't very quiet at all as a young dog but I think I still only slept downstairs for a couple of weeks. Don't worry at all that you haven't done this at this point I only mention it as you may reconsider what you choose to do if he's noisy at night in the future. I posted a new thread yesterday "Ted. What to do at night? Do you have any links to any sites which go into detail about the new approach to overnighting with the puppy? Last night I decided to stay downstairs with Ted. I made up a bed opposite his crate in our kitchen diner, but before that made sure he's peed and pooed outside, and did some clicker work with him settling in the crate. So far so good. I closed the crate after leaving a kibble-filled Kong with him. I also left a dimmed lamp on. He started on the Kong and I settled down to "sleep". He actually made very short work of the kibble lesson for next time - use some treat he has to work to reach! Almost immediately he started whining. I was determined this time that my wife would sleep through the night, so where I probably normally have ignored him, I sat up and did some more clicker work to quieten him down. I'll probably hear, when my wife gets up, that the sound of the clicker kept her awake! This worked for a bit, then he started again. That's how it went off and on for much of the night. Neither man nor dog got much sleep. At no time though was Ted anywhere near as loud and distressed as the night before. He was clearly not happy being in a closed crate and made a bid to chew away the fastener! This time I sat up and in an urgent whisper kept repeating "down" with no clicker, just "good boy" He eventually settled with one or two blips, each dealt with the same way. I let him out at 5 and he's peed and pooed outside already, and run about like a demented thing, with chewy toys. He then went to sleep in the open crate for a while, and he is now snoozing at my feet. My question is this: How do I answer my nagging doubt that I'm creating problems for myself? Will this way really help wean him off needing me around? Will he learn to love the closed crate, and if so, do you have any tips for facilitating that? Below are some reasons why your Labrador might be doing it and what would make them more likely to be the main reason. Ancestry Wolves are known to howl to identify each other in the wild and this is a trait that present-day dogs could have kept from their ancestors. Separation Anxiety The cause could be that it has some separation anxiety. This is where it does not like being left alone and it becomes anxious when it is about to be left alone. This would be more likely to be the case if it starts howling at around the same time that you normally leave home. This type of howling will often be accompanied by other things such as destruction, pacing or other signs of distress. Communication Wolves, in the wild, will howl to tell other members of the pack where it is or to scare off other predators that are entering their territories. In the case of your Labrador, the howling could be to alert others of its location such as when it hears sirens. It could also be to warn others not to enter its territory. Environment The reason why your Labrador howls could be that it is in response to something in its environment. If it hears things such as other dogs howling , sirens or other high pitched noises then it will likely cause it to start howling in response. Boredom It could be that the Labrador is howling due to boredom. Labradors were bred to be a very active breed and it takes a lot to properly stimulate them. If your Labrador becomes overly anxious when you leave or at the sight of you preparing to leave then it could be a case of separation anxiety. Other cues could be that it becomes destructive when you are away, it could be depressed or it might pace up and down when it thinks that you could be leaving. Lots of exercise with the dog. Solve Howling Due To Sounds Figuring out whether or not sounds are causing the howling should be a bit easier since your Labrador will begin to howl at the start of the sound and then stop howling when it stops. If it is a frequent sound then getting it to stop could be a bit more tricky. Instead, you should consider a systematic desensitization and counterconditioning program that is designed to solve emotional related issues. Desensitization is where the Labrador is guided to become less sensitive to the sounds and to reduce its physical and emotional response. Counterconditioning is designed to make the Labrador change the way that it feels about the sound and to improve its feelings towards it. You can read more about these programs at pets. Solve Howling For Attention It could be the case that your Labrador does it because it knows that it will get more attention from you when it does it. Instead, it would help to give it attention throughout the day by training it, walking it and playing with it. But, it would help to stop rewarding it with attention when it starts howling. Reduce its Boredom Since Labradors can be active dogs it is important to make sure that yours is able to get the recommended amount of daily exercise. Generally, it is recommended for them to get at least an hour of exercise per day as healthy adults. By doing so, you should be able to get expert advice tailored towards your particular Labrador and to rule out medical causes. By doing so, you should be able to see why it is doing it and how to get it to stop effectively.

I am about 2 years old and I love follow my foster mum around. She tells me I am her shadow. My foster potty trained me in a day and she said I am very very smart and I have to agree with that. I also learned new commands like sit, down, and off. We are working on the stay but I have a hard time sitting still because I have lots to keep an eye on inside. She walks me always on her right side and I became very well behaved in our leash walking training. I do like to be right by my foster brother Logan, so sometimes I will pull to be with him. I have an another foster brother and he is smaller and furry and he meows for food all the time when he is not sleeping. I love him and he give me sand kisses. We went to a coffee shop other day and all these people want to pet me and take pics of me. I felt like a movie star! On the walks I get overly excited when I see other dogs and I am very vocal about it. Sometimes the dogs get scared of me, but I assure you, I am awesome and not aggressive at all. I just want to say hi to ALL the dogs! But I warm up to everyone very quickly. I am getting a lot of love and attention right now and it will be ideal for me to not be left alone for too long. While I love to play with my foster siblings, I really just want calm space to hang out with my humans and other fur friends. I wake and jump into bed to give my foster parents good morning snuggles! I enjoy a light morning snack and spend the rest of the day napping and hanging out with the humans while they work. After work, all bets are off, and I make sure to get all the puppy zoomies out. My leash training is going well, but I often try to chase the leaves and get distracted by unfamiliar sights and smells. I love to go outside to play, chew on a stick or take a walk. I also enjoy down time with humans to cuddle and get lots of belly rubs. I start my day at am, go potty, then breakfast. After I like going outside to chase squirrels and play. I then have dinner around pm and in my crate by 10pm for bed. I love learning tricks and am very food motivated! I also like to try and outsmart my foster parents when they hide my treats or sticks, I bring inside. I am very curious and love to explore, play, eat, and cuddle. Now that I am older, I can make it through the night without any potty accidents but I need to go outside as soon as I am up, usually around 7am. I eat breakfast then it's right back outside for my next potty break! I like to have a chew bone and play for a while, then naps. I like to sit on the couch next to my foster mom, or lay on my back sprawled out on the floor. I love going for walks and am learning to not pull. I bark a little at other dogs but I am very dog and people friendly. Nights are pretty low key, I may play a little before bed time, where I prefer to sleep next to my foster parent's bed. I love to cuddle if you'll allow me up too! Since I am still a puppy, I need reinforcements with potty training, proper leash walking, and learning what and what not to chew on.
