Puppies bite to learn acquired bite inhibition, or ABI. What exactly is ABI? He might leap up and bite you because you hurt him and scared him. But the important thing is this: how hard will they bite? This is where ABI comes in. So ABI is really important. Now the question is, how do they learn it? The only way for puppies to learn ABI is to bite, and bite often. The best teachers are other dogs. Next time they bite a little less hard and playtime continues. This is how they learn ABI. Obviously, it takes a lot of repetition of this scenario to happen for a puppy to learn not to bite so hard, but this is essentially how it works out. Yes, you will need to help teach your puppy ABI. You can do this two ways: Set up puppy playdates and take them to puppy kindergarten so other puppies can teach them ABI. You actually want them to bite a little bit and learn to control how hard they bite. That being said, letting them go on a biting rampage is not helping the situation, so here are five tips to help you stop your puppy from biting so much: 1. Breeders will try to prioritize the low-shedding coat in Lab Pei puppies, but it is not always possible to control for this, and your dog could have either coat. Labradors have an athletic build with a square and long muzzle and long floppy ears. Shar-Peis have a melon-shaped head with a flat, broad muzzle. While they have athletic bodies, their heads are proportionately large. They also have clam-shell ears and excess skin that causes deep wrinkles. How these physical characteristics will combine in a mixed pup is difficult to predict. Very often you will see dogs with the longer muzzle of a Lab but the clam-shell ears or a Shar-Pei, though slightly longer than normal. Skin wrinkling is expected, but to a much lesser extent than on a purebred Shar-Pei. Whichever coat your dog receives, they will need quite a bit of grooming! At first he hated the bath but now he is learning to love the water and swims at the beach! They were found as very young puppies, walking along the freeway together. Kazu the black one is very loyal, follows me around the house, gazes at me, etc. She's very excitable and has trouble—after 5 years—understanding that jumping when someone comes in isn't okay. She's a very happy dog who even wags her tail when she eats. She's quite aloof and bossy. Her affection is on her terms and she's the only dog I've ever seen who sulks. She does love to play, however, and frequently brings her rope to me, wags her tail, looking for some playtime. He loves to jump and play in the water. He is wary of strangers but once he knows you, he loves you. We didn't really know what to expect with this hybrid, because there are few out there. She has turned out to be a terrific little dog. The puppyhood was difficult, and she displayed typical Lab behaviors. Lucy would chew on everything and everyone! Now that she has passed the one-year mark she is really coming along. Lucy is extremely friendly, loves children and other dogs, and rarely barks. She is loyal, but not jealous, and is very smart. She responds well to both verbal and hand commands, and is a great exercise partner. One negative, though she has the great Shar Pei wrinkles and short hair, she does shed quite a bit. A dog identified as banned by a dog warden will be presumed to be so, unless the owner can prove that it's not banned in court. In most cases, a court will order a dog seized as a banned breed to be put down, even where the council decides not to prosecute the owner. An owner of a seized Pit Bull must let the court know that they plan to give evidence that the dog is not a banned dog type at least 14 days before the hearing is due to take place. Once seized, your dog will be kept in kennels before a court hearing - this could be for several weeks or months. Judging whether your dog is a banned breed A council dog warden, or an expert used by the council, will assess your dog's physical characteristics. They will judge the type of dog you have and whether it appears to be a banned breed. Following the assessment, the council will decide either of the following: your dog will be released if it is not believed to be a banned breed your dog will be kept in kennels while the council applies to a court for a destruction order You can give up ownership of your dog but you cannot be forced to. If you do, your dog could be destroyed without a court order. This exempts the dog from the ban as long as the exemption conditions are met. The exemption conditions are: the dog is kept leashed and muzzled when in a public place when not in a public place, the dog is in sufficiently secure conditions the dog is made available to council dog wardens for inspection the council is notified of any change of address of the dog, or of the death or export of the dog third party insurance policy is taken out for the dog In these circumstances you have two months to show that the exemption conditions have been met. Then you can apply for dog a licence from the council. If the exemption conditions are not met, it is likely to lead to the destruction of the dog concerned. Where a dog has been exempted from the ban on certain dog types, it is still an offence to breed from that dog, advertise it for sale or exchange, or transfer its ownership without informing the council.
