It was the French, however, who honored the Poodle at home, in court circles and on the battlefields thus earning the dog the popular, but incorrect title, "French Poodle. Poodles are highly intelligent and learn very quickly, are adaptable and have a good sense of humor. They come in three varieties sizes , many colors, do not shed, and are tolerated by many allergy suffers. With so many wonderful qualities, it is easy to understand why the Poodle has so many admirers. They are ideal for those individuals who prefer a larger dog, anywhere from about pounds can be pounds. The Miniature Poodle is a sturdy size but small enough for apartment living and large enough to be a rough and tumble child's companion. The Miniature Poodle is also very intelligent, learns quickly and thrives on all the same activities as the Standard Poodle. By definition, the Toy Poodle should not be taller than 10 inches at the shoulders and about pounds. The Toy Poodle is not an appropriate pet in a home with young children. While just as active as its Standard and Miniature relatives it is still small enough to warrant adult supervision when little children are near. Otherwise, the American Bulldog is a relatively low-maintenance breed, requiring not much else than mopping up his regular drool and slobber and minimal grooming for his short, fine coat. Known for his strength, courage and ease around livestock, the breed began being used for bull baiting before it was outlawed in England. Consequently following the ban, the breed was replaced with the less athletic, shorter and stockier English Bulldog. Meanwhile, the original bulldog type was preserved by working class immigrants, who brought them on their journey to America to use as all-around working dogs on farms and ranches in the South. Johnson worked to revive the breed alongside Alan Scott and other breeders. American Bulldog History The ancestor of the American Bulldog is the Old English Bulldog, which was brought to North America by working class immigrants who wanted to keep their working dogs to help on the farms. Rather than being concerned with maintaining breed purity or certain genetic traits, early farmers bred the dogs with the best working qualities for all-around farm work. Wild pigs were an invasive species not native to the American south that had no natural predators, and the strong jaws and muscular build of the American Bulldog was perfect for hunting them down. They were originally used in the barbaric sport of bull baiting. By the end of World War II, the American Bulldog was almost extinct until a few breeders scoured the south for specimens to revive the breed. Today, the American Bulldog is in no danger of extinction and is mostly a family-friendly companion. Adorable American Bulldog puppies will grow to 20 to 28 inches in height and 60 to pounds by the time they reach adulthood. Although these sizes are considered to be standard for the breed, American Bulldogs can be quite a bit larger or smaller. American Bulldog Personality American Bulldogs are friendly, intelligent, and affectionate , though that affectionate nature often leads them to be territorial and overly suspicious of strangers. This makes them lovely family dogs and watchdogs, even for families with children, but they will need socialization training, especially as puppies to get along with unfamiliar humans or other dogs that stop by for a visit. Luckily, their intelligence makes them highly adaptable and trainable. The American Bulldog is a playful breed that has some high exercise needs, and they do well in families that are able to stay active with lots of walks and play time. They can develop in American Bulldogs and may require surgical removal for treatment. It can lead to itching, hair loss, and skin irritation. Treatment typically involves medicated baths and sometimes oral medications. This can lead to weight gain, lethargy, skin issues, and other health problems. It is usually managed with lifelong medication. It can lead to lameness and discomfort, and severe cases may require surgical intervention. Elbow Dysplasia : Elbow dysplasia is another developmental disorder affecting the elbows. It can cause pain, lameness, and arthritis in the affected limb. Treatment may involve medication, weight management, and in some cases, surgery to correct the condition. American Bulldog Care Most of the care that is necessary for the health of an American Bulldog is meeting their needs for exercise and mental stimulation. Failing to do so can result in anxiety, boredom, and destructive behavior. So long as those needs are met, the rest is fairly standard. Maintain normal vet visits, check their ears weekly, keep up with monthly nail clipping and normal dental care. One of the issues you may face is the potential for drooling that is common among bully breeds. You should take care to wipe your dog as needed unless you want a generous amount of slobber all over your home. American Bulldog Feeding An American Bulldog diet should be formulated for a large to giant breed, and their high energy level should be taken into consideration. Their needs will change from puppyhood to adulthood. You should discuss with them how to form an appropriate diet for your dog. Traditionally they are white with patches of brindle, red, or black, but there are quite a few more color variations to the breed in modern times. They may have patterns that include shades of black, red, brindle, brown, or fawn. American Bulldogs usually have black on the nose and the rims of the eyes, but they may also have shades of pink. Their eye color is usually brown. Although these are breed standards, some American Bulldogs have been known to be merle or have coats that contain shades of blue. Weekly brushing should keep it under control with baths as needed. So long as they are trained properly, American Bulldogs are great with children and are very loyal to all members of the family. It is also important to train children on how to properly handle and treat animals to avoid incident. American Bulldogs are large animals, and overly energetic play can cause injuries. The same can be said for interactions with other pets. So long as American Bulldogs are socialized and trained, they usually get along with other dogs just fine. Play should be supervised, especially with smaller dogs that can easily get hurt when playing with a large, muscular American Bulldog. American Bulldog Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have health problems and behavioral issues. More Info For You. Dependence 1. American Bulldog Lifespan This is a breed that you will spend many years with and form a strong bond with. Typically speaking, they are known for their physical strength and great health which contributes to a lengthy life. When fed a proper diet, exercised on a regular basis, and given the care and affection they need, these fur babies usually live between years and some live even longer than that. Ambulls are full or energy which has part to do with why they are considered an athletic dog breed. Helping your furry friend release their energy is crucial when it comes to maintaining proper behavior. To be perfectly clear, this is not a breed that does well with simply being kept in a back yard. Daily exercise as well and mental stimulation is an absolute must. The happiest Ambulls are those that participate in regular playtime with their humans. They also like to switch up activities rather than doing the same thing over and over again. Being such a high energy breed, these fur babies can be challenging for some people, especially those that are often away from the house. However, the challenge is more than worth the effort as long as you are willing to put in the work. Types Of American Bulldogs You might be surprised to learn that there are actually several different types of Ambulls. While each is quite similar to the others, they do have their own distinct differences. Their bodies are muscular and broad and they also have very short muzzles. Contrary to other types of dogs from this breed, the Johnson has very low energy levels and will need encouragement to get the exercise they need. For this reason, Johnsons can easily become overweight. However, they are extremely loving and enjoy pleasing their humans. They are also protective when needed, but friendly the majority of the time. Painter Margentina This is another well built and strong dog from the Bully line. Unfortunately, these Ambulls come from a dark past. They were bred solely for fighting. Even though this is no fault of their own, their past has led to some aggressive behaviors. The good news is that they are intelligent and trainable so these behaviors can often be curved. However, a Painter would likely not make a good fit for a first-time owner or someone with small children in the house. However, unlike the Johnson, these fur babies are incredibly active and require regular exercise as well as mental stimulation. Their appearance is also slightly different from most dogs in this breed line due to their long legs, muzzle shape, and lean stature. As their name suggests, they are typically found in the south. However, they have been expanding across the rest of the country. They make amazing companions and have an excellent temperament. Their energy level is often somewhere between the Johnson and the Scott. Ambulls are a breed that require a fair amount of exercise. In order to keep your furry friend healthy, they should participate in hours of physical activity per day. While two daily walks for about minutes are a great place to start, additional exercise will be needed in most cases. The good news is that exercise can be fun for both of you. Try activities such as fetch, tug of war, or frisbee. American Bulldog Temperament Temperament and personality are important things to keep in mind before adopting an American Bulldog. The good news is that Ambulls have an incredible temperament. This breed tends to be loyal, affectionate, and gentle. They make amazing family dogs and are incredibly good with children. However, this also contributes to their ability to make excellent guard dogs. Training from a young age is quite beneficial with this breed. While they are eager to please their humans, establishing yourself as the pack leader as soon as possible is crucial. Are They Easy To Train? Truthfully speaking, training an American Bulldog can be a daunting task, especially for a novice trainer. This breed loves to please their humans, buy they also have a muscular build and a strong personality that tends to lead to them wanting to have things their way. The most important thing when training an Ambull is to use reward based training rather than discipline based. Reward based training will make the experience more enjoyable for both your fur baby and you. Here are the best steps you can take when training an your fur baby. Socialize with other animals and people from a young age. Let your fur baby set the pace with their socialization. Begin obedience training as soon as possible. Use both hand and voice commands. Stay patient throughout the process. Impatience will only delay training. Remain consistent to avoid taking steps backward. Never use physical punishment against your dog. Be firm with your commands without being harsh. Use rewards to reinforce positive behaviors. Establish trust as well as a bond with your furry friend. Typically speaking, an Ambull can weigh anywhere between pounds. They often stand between inches high. However, keep in mind that these sizes and weights are simply the breed standards. Ambulls can easily be much larger or even smaller at times. Are They Good Guard Dogs? Due to their protective nature, large build, and high levels or bravery, this breed does make an excellent guard dog. They are quick to intervene if they sense their loved ones are in trouble and will put themselves in the line of danger without hesitation. One thing to keep in mind is that their protectiveness can lead to excessive barking at times, but this behavior can usually easily be corrected with training. American Bulldog Health Issues While Ambulls typically live long and healthy lives, they do have health concerns to watch out for. The most worrying is the chance of bone cancer. However, the risk is relatively low in most cases. The most common issue to watch out for is obesity which is why these fur babies should never be allowed to free feed and should receive regular exercise. Other health concerns to watch out for include: 1. Hip Dysplasia. Should you get a young puppy, an older puppy, or an adult dog? Where can you buy or adopt an American Bulldog? American Bulldogs are a pretty common breed in the United States. They're not difficult to find. American Bulldogs might be turned over to Rescue because they need too exercise, or because they're too rambunctious or destructive. There might be dominance issues, or aggression toward other animals. Owners often give up their American Bulldog when it becomes apparent that the dog is too much for them to handle. You would need to provide these dogs with the exercise, training, and socialization that they are lacking. Other American Bulldogs are given up simply because of changed family circumstances, and these dogs may have no behavior problems at all. Adopting From Public Animal Shelters and Humane Societies American Bulldogs are occasionally found here, but American Bulldog Rescue groups keep their eyes peeled on shelters and humane societies across the country. When an American Bulldog turns up at a shelter, the rescue group typically moves in quickly to take the dog. Buying From a Dog Breeder You can buy an American Bulldog from a show breeder, who breeds American Bulldogs to match a detailed standard of appearance for the dog show ring. Or you can buy an American Bulldog from a performance breeder, who emphasizes an energetic temperament and strong "prey chasing drives" for hunting wild boar, or for participating in protection dog sports schutzhund or weight pulling competitions. You can also buy an American Bulldog from people who "just breed pets" or "just had one litter. Be sure to read the article to learn more about these people. You might choose to accept that risk. But then you need to be willing and able to pay a couple thousand bucks for future surgeries and lifelong meds if your American Bulldog ends up with hip and elbow dysplasia. American Bulldogs are not seen very often in pet shops, but it's possible. I have plenty to say about buying a puppy from a pet shop! Which puppy?

Some very exciting things will be coming our way for color testing! There are three legitimate and ethical breed clubs that are the main registries in the US and Canada for solids and these are their breed standards. Please do not be fooled by breeders trying to sell you dogs registered with these clubs. On the flip side however, dogs registered or shown in the clubs above do not guarantee quality dogs or an ethical breeder. Any dog not owned by myself past or present, have been given to me with permission from their owners. Huge thanks to their owners for their permission and photos and their breeders for bringing these beautiful dogs into the world! Cream "e" E locus-photo Harper Alue Poodles Cream is a color that tends to fade into white as the dog ages. As puppies they can either have a cream coloring behind the ears or their whole body can be cream. As adults they can retain spots of cream behind the ears like Harper here. Some dogs do keep a cream tint into adulthood like the dog below. Creams should have dark eyes and dark inky black pigment in their points; their nose, eye rims, lips, and pads. If you have a cream born with liver points, they have incorrect pigment. Creams should have black or self colored ie clear nails. White "e" E locus We have the last in the E series, white! White is timeless, white is classic. White Poodles should have dark eyes, nice dark inky black pigment on their noses and eye rims. They should also have black or self colored nails. Whites can also get what is called "snow nose" across many breeds; in the winter, their dark pigment will fade into a liver color that will then return in the summer. This is not the same as poor pigment. You will see white Poodles with both dark, almost black looking skin when shaved in a Continental, and they can also have white skin. Dark pigment is preferred but there is nothing wrong with a dog with light skin. With whites, there are a number born with a slighty creamy tinge to their coat but grow out into a white coat. True whites, called "ice white" in the breed, are rather rare. Reds tend to fade to an apricot color or a light "washed out" red. There are of course reds who do not fade, but when purchasing a red be aware it's a possibility. There are breeders working towards breeding dark, holding reds, but that can also be a catch .Reds should have dark eyes and dark, inky black points; eye rims, lips, nose, and pads. If a red has liver pigment or spotty pigment, that is incorrect and is a major fault in the breed ring. Reds should have black or self colored ie "brown" nails. Apricot is a less intense version of red. Apricots tend to keep their color more, but they also can start out darker and fade to a shade of dark cream. Apricots should also have dark, inky black pigment on their points, however amber eyes and liver points are permitted but not desired. Apricots should have black or self colored nails as well. Apricots and reds are the "newest" color in the history of the breed, so unfortunately the history with these lines and how the popularity of them exploded, they were bred for color for a very long time before temperament, structure, and health were put first. Brown "b" b locus Firstly it needs to be said that Poodles are not chocolate, they are brown. Brown is recessive to black, which is why it is "b" instead of "B". Brown Poodles will always have lighter eyes, liver points, and self colored nails. Browns, like reds, are affected by fading. There are browns that are holding, but when purchasing a brown be aware fading will happen to a certain degree. There are breeders that are working towards breeding holding browns, and there is inherently nothing wrong with that as long as temperament, health, and breed type come first before coat color. Black "B" B locus Black Poodles. Timeless, classic, stunning!! Blacks should be born inky black and should stay inky black. However, you will hear the term "bad black" which is different from a blue dog. A bad black simply refers to a dog that does not hold it's coat pigment. A black dog who's coat has been sun damaged does not mean it is a bad black. Black dogs should have dark eyes, inky black pigment from top to bottom! Blues will look black when they are born, but there is an "old breeders tale" that blue and silver puppies will have white hairs in between their toes, but that is not a blanket truth. Blue Poodles will fade at varying speeds and degree. The two blues included are siblings but have not faded to the same degree. Most will fade into their 5th and 6th birthdays, but there are also some who hold onto a very slight blue tint for years. Blues will have dark eyes and dark pigment on their eye rims, noses, lips, and paw pads. Nails will also be black. One that is my personal favorite and one that has stumped us for quite some time! Silver is a recessive to black like blue. Silvers are born black and by their first face shave their face should start to be silvering. Silvers, like blues, do not fade on a set scale. It is thought there are modifiers in play that determine how blues and silvers clear and to what degree. You can see silvers from a darker color all the way to platinum silver. Silvers should have dark eyes and dark inky black eye rims, lips, nose, and paw pads. My favorite brownies! Silver beiges are brown based silvers, and like silvers, you will see by their first face shave a silver brown color. Silver beige Poodles are born brown and lighten with age, by two most are a beautiful silver color with a stunning brown hue, but all fade at different speeds and different shades. Silver beige Poodles will have light eyes, liver points, and self colored nails. In the past, these dogs were culled as an attempt to remove them from the gene pool. This did not work, and as simple recessives they pop up often even in seemingly all solid bloodlines. Just one copy of dominant black KB will cause a dog to be black or brown. Seal and ghost tan are potential exceptions, but we're not getting into that just yet. The pattern produced will depend on what the dog has on the A locus. The 4 genotypes on the A locus in order of dominance are; agouti aw , sable ay , phantom at , and recessive black a. Agouti poodles are breathtakingly beautiful. Certain poodles are sometimes mistakenly referred to as "phantom sables". This isn't genetically possible, and oftentimes these dogs are in fact agouti, and may have characteristics of both a phantom and sable dog. A sable dog can be nearly solid cream, or appear agouti. Often, they will be mostly solid cream or apricot with black ears and tail, along with black hairs mixed in on the back. Sable puppies change significantly as they grow. The only thing you can guarantee is they won't be the same color as an adult as they are as a puppy, and that they will be gorgeous no matter the final pattern! It produces the pattern most commonly associated with breeds such as the doberman or rottweiler. Phantom poodles will usually have tan "eyebrows", cheeks, chest spots, lower legs, and under the tail. It is striking and beautiful! There are also modifiers that can cause what we call creeping tan or saddle tan which can cause the tan areas to grow and spread, much like what is seen in some German shepherds. This modifier is still being studied and isn't fully understood. It is unique as it doesn't produce a pattern, but actually causes the dog to be just black or brown. This is one reason color testing is important. A solid black dog could produce patterns very unexpectedly in a breeding program. Combinations Patterns can be produced on a dog at the same time. You can have a dog that is both parti and sable. The dog would have the white areas to the coat, and the colored areas would be sable. The same goes for brindle. That would cause the colored areas of the coat to be brindled. You can have a dog that is parti, phantom, and brindle. This would be a parti colored dog that also had tan points, and within those tan points there would be striping. There are many possibilities and combinations. It all depends on what the parent dogs both express and carry. Two such patterns are seal and ghost tan. Both of these patterns will express occasionally in dogs that are genetically dominant black.
