Genetic health testing is an integral part of a responsible dog breeding program. When using genetic health testing it is important for breeders to educate themselves about concepts such as modes of inheritance, penetrance, prevalence, and phenotype for a specific variant mutation in your breed in order to apply test results. Breeders also need to know which variants are causing health concerns in their breed, and which health conditions currently have no genetic test available. This handy search function by breed or by health condition can show breeders which DNA tests Embark provides. The health condition percentages based on clear, carrier, and at-risk status presented on common, rare, and very rare genetic risk factors are based on a subset of dogs within the Embark database and do not necessarily represent all dogs of this breed. While we are not able to provide specific population numbers at this time, we believe the data provided here to be sufficient to inform on current trends within the North American population of French Bulldogs. This pressure on the spinal cord causes neurologic signs which can range from pain to a wobbly gait to paralysis. There are multiple different variants that can cause a markedly chondrodystrophic appearance as observed in Dachshunds and Corgis. However, this particular variant is the only one known to also increase the risk for IVDD. Many dog breeds, due to human selection for a desired appearance phenotype , have a high frequency of this variant in the FGF4 retrogene, meaning most or all Frenchies have at least one copy of the variant. Therefore, breeding decisions cannot be made solely based on this variant in these breeds. The retina contains cells, called photoreceptors, that collect information about light and send signals to the brain. There are two types of photoreceptors: rods, for night vision and movement, and cones, for day vision and color. This type of PRA leads to early loss of cone cells, causing day blindness before night blindness. Dogs with larger retinal lesions can suffer from vision loss. CMR is fairly non-progressive; new lesions will typically stop forming by the time a dog is an adult, and some lesions will even regress with time. In most dogs, uric acid is converted to allantoin, an inert substance that is then excreted in the urine. Dogs with HUU have defects in the pathway that converts uric acid to allantoin. As such, uric acid builds up, crystallizes and forms urate stones in the kidney and bladder. Once bladder stones develop, surgical removal is typically required. While hyperuricemia in other species including humans can lead to painful conditions such as gout, dogs do not develop systemic signs of hyperuricemia. The gene is SLC2A9 and the mode of inheritance is recessive. Citations: Bannasch et al Karmi et al Donner et al With four known conditions in the French Bulldog, this is evidence that genetic disorders are of concern within the breed and other conditions are likely to be identified in the future. By DNA testing your French Bulldog with Embark you can help accelerate more novel discoveries to help your breed and all dogs. Canine Health and Breed Resources. Artificial Insemination — why and how Artificial Insemination — The process We prefer ai artificial insemination. The ai artificial insemination itself is simple and rather fast, no longer than thirty minutes from start to finish. How its done: Semen is collected into a bag and drawn up into a syringe with some air to help push the semen through the pipette. The syringe is attached to a pipette that is then inserted into the female. The female then stays elevated and stimulated for minutes and will be refrained from urinating for at least thirty minutes. Breeding Females Females start on Bstrong around 6 months of age. Bstrong is a vitamin supplement that supports great reproductive health and health in general, in both puppies and adults. Once the females reach months of age, they will be ready to breed. For the process of artificial insemination, all females begin with progesterone testing at day seven, as its imperative for proper timing of insemination. Progesterone Testing Progesterone testing is a blood test that measures the reproductive hormone levels of the females. Once the hormone levels reach a certain number, the ai artificial insemination is then performed. Once males become of breeding age seven-twelve months , their semen is then evaluated by a licensed veterinarian. Counts, mobility, and motility are all assessed. We have our own microscope to check before each In House breeding to make sure the semen is viable. All Shipped Semen will be prepared and boxed by our Licensed Veterinarian. The box will include a Semen Analysis. Due to sexually transmitted diseases even found in dogs, we do not offer natural breedings for the safety of our animals and yours. AKC offers many, many different options and benefits to breeders and puppy parents. Training courses, breeder kennel registration, pet insurance, and more. Including: Mr. Attitude, Mr. When purchasing a CKC dog always ask for pedigree and lineage, if this is unavailable, ask for dna testing. If you wish to register your dog with CKC, it can be quite simple. In that paperwork you will be asked to provide 2 witnesses verifying the authenticity of the breed and 3 pictures of the dog, should you be starting with no other parental information. They will upload all the information into the system so when you register a CKC litter, parents can purchase a complete pedigree! For example. CKC offers photo id cards, photo registration, photo pedigrees, pedigrees, and members have the option to add a picture of their dog to the registration papers. Breeders can be added to a trusted breeder list. What do we think of registrations? We feel that if you can purchase a pedigree for your pup or view parental pedigree whether it be from AKC or CKC, why limit yourself to a pet based on club registry? We call it registry blindness. Go Home Date: 8 Weeks After Birth Puppies need time to nurse, grow and develop with their mother and littermates before they can join their new families. A newborn puppy should stay with their breeder, mom, and siblings as they develop physically and gain new social skills alongside their brothers and sisters. The age a puppy can go home depends on the breed, and even the individual, but generally is around two months. Allergy Test Dogs usually develop hereditary chronic environmental allergies between the ages of three and six. These environmental allergies manifest themselves as hay fever, asthma, irritated scabbed skin, and rashes. Environmental allergies are permanent and have no cure. When Frenchies suffer from an environmental allergy, they scratch, rub, and lick the affected areas excessively. Food allergies manifest as but are not limited to diarrhea, vomiting, flatulence, and irritable skin conditions that cause itchy, painful hives, rashes, bumps, sores, and more. Open skin sores are prone to developing bacterial and fungal infections. By testing ALL of our dogs and puppies, we make sure we are a step ahead. This allele is picked at random, so each of the two alleles has a 50 percent chance of being passed to all the puppies. When a sperm cell fertilizes an egg, an embryo starts to develop. The sperm cell is just one of thousands that have been produced by the male dog. Each sperm cell carries half the information that is needed to create a new puppy, and that information consists of random two alleles. Egg cells are exactly the same in that they also carry one set of alleles, however, fewer of them are produced. In simple terms, when the egg and the sperm join together, they create a nucleus that carries all the necessary genetic information to develop into an embryo. So you can see that genetics involves a lot of random chances. By performing a full DNA color panel, we can increase the probability of the puppies being a certain color. For example: Merle is a fascinating, beautiful, varied color pattern that is dominant and denoted by the capital letter M. Non-merle is recessive, and denoted by lowercase m. The Merle gene dilutes random sections of the coat to a lighter color leaving patches of the original color remaining. Issues arise when you get a dog that is a cryptic Merle, meaning that they are merle Mm but the variety is not externally visible on their coat. If you do not DNA test your dog and breed two Merle dogs together you have a 25 percent chance of producing MM puppies or so called double Merle dogs. Because Merle affects the eumelanin striping the color off , double Merle puppies can be blind, deaf, and be sun-sensitive. This is due to the fact that heterozygous Merle Mm have plenty of pigment but double-merles MM have large white areas where there is no pigment produced in vital areas like the eyes and inner ears. Another example is the color cream, denoted by the letter e. A homozygous dog with an ee genotype will not have the ability to produce any eumelanin and so will be completely cream but still carries color that can be passed to the offspring, thus leaving us to guess what colors the puppies might be. Embark Embark The Embark test is a very elaborate test. Hunderds of diseases and abnormalities are tested, and all of them came from a cheeck swab. The genetic variety is also calculated in the dog. The more genetic variety the better, it means there are less copies of genes present in that dog. The genes of the dog are also mapped amongst other dogs of the same breed. You will see very clearly where your dogs stands genetically in the population. Because so many diseases are tested for, it is very likely to catch a disease before in become a problem in the breed. The test is performed on a cheek swab, this is ieal non-invasive testing. The swab is sent to a laboratory in the USA. After 6 weeks the result follows. It contains of no less than 12 pages! Also included in the profile are some colour loci and other appearance related things. We do not breed for colour, but it is funny to know how to predict the colours of the offspring. We think an Embark profile is very valuable. All the dogs we intend to breed will posess an Embark profile. Degenerative Myelopathy DM is a fatal progressive neurological condition on the spinal cord in dogs. It is comparable to ALS in humans. Dogs with DM will usualle show signs of the disease when they are 6 or 7 years old, but some show symptoms a lot later. From the first sign of the disease to the end usually takes about 6 to 18 months. DM starts with weakness and loss of coordination in the back limbs. First one leg and then the other. De dog drags and wiggles with the back legs and can even trip. The nails wear down and damage to the leg can follow, with infections as a consequence. Later, when the paralization worsens the dog will fall down, espacially on slippery sufaces. Walking gets more difficult. A dog that is in good condition can still run as long as the other leg is still viable. Incontinence mostly means the last stage in the disease. In the end vital organs will be affected. The development of the disease is dependent on the fysical condition of the dog and environmental factors. We think it is very important to cooperate in research to find all the genes responsible. This is why we test our dogs for Degenerative Myelopathy. More information about Degenerative Myelopathy can be found on this page. Not so strange, because the condition only affects intact, adult males. Because of this it has been unnoticed for a long time. No etimated are known yet that show how many French Bulldogs are affected by this disease. There are different types of bladder stones in dogs. Struvite, Oxalate, Urate and Cystine. Struvite and Oxalate can be formed when the Ph of the urine is not optimal. Urate is an inherited disease in Dalmatians. Cystine stones are also know for a while in various other breeds like Newfoundlanders, Mastiffs and English Bulldogs. And recently in Fench Bulldogs a breed-specific variety, Type 3 Cystinuria. Most of the males are often castrated and this is also the treatment for this condition. When stones are formed in the bladder of an intact male will this be unnoticed at first. When a larger number of Cystine stones is formed it could block the urethra. A blocked urethra means that the dog can not urinate. The urine builds up in the bladder until the bladder ruptures. Symtoms are lethargia and pain. If the stones remain untreated the dog will die. In a surgery the stones can be removed. When the dog is also castrated during this procedure it will prevent the forming of new stones. The DNA test is performed by a simple cheek swab that goes in an envelope towards the University of Pennsylvania. The condition inherits autosomal recessive. A carrier of this condition has no symptoms. Castrated males do not make Cystine stones! So much is possible nowadays that we can use to make the next generations healthier. This is why we have added this DNA test to our testing protocol. Breeders often pretend that their French Bulldogs are perfect. It is not exeptional for a French Bulldog to die at a young age with many health defects. After all, they can get old with HD, hemivertebrae and bad airways. It is misleading to say that this dog was healthy during his life. The problem of the hemivertebrae Until now it was usual to make x-rays from all vertebrae. This includes all neck- thoracic- and loin vertebrae. On an x-ray is only the outside of the vertebra visual. On the image below you see an x-ray on the left and a CT image on the right. The x-ray image is made from a lateral view and on the CT you can see a cross-cut. If we get to the CT image, however, it shows a much more complicated fracture that has multiple fragments. When you are performing a health protocol with only x-ray images the hemivertebrae will be classified as minimal or severe. Location, experience and the number of deformities all play a part in the decision to breed with this dog or not. Spondylosis, athritis and calcified interverbral discs are also part of this decision. Experts can also put the deformities in 2 categories: hemivertebrae and shortened vertebrae. In a hemivertebrae is 1 side of the vertebrae shorter, thus showing a vertebra that is triangular in shape. With shortened vertebrae the vertebra is less elongated as the other vertebrae. On this page you can read more on the anatomy of the vertebrae. An assessment of the vertebrae through an x-ray image is much less accurate than an assessment with a CT scan. When you make a CT scan you can also see the spinal cord with the nervous tracts. This way we can see if nothing is narrowed from within. A seemingly small hemivertebrae lead to a narrowing of the spinal cord. This deformity is invisible on an x-ray. In comparison: a spinal cord without deformations. The last few years quite some French Bulldogs are known with spinal issues. Because of this many receive medication or surgery and some had to be euthanised unfortunately. .CT scans show that badly developed vertebrae often are the culprit with problems in the spinal cord. The natural pillows are missing, this makes that fragments can break off of the vertebra. This causes a lot of pain. The consequences for these dogs and their offspring are often terrible. Because of these reasons we chose to perform CT scans on all our dogs we hope to breed with. This way we can look at a threedimensional image of that is really going on in the spine! The problems on the airways Left: Endoscopic examination of the palate without findings. Male, 11 months old Right: CT image from the palate. The same male, 5 years old. The words most often used in breeding French Bulldogs is good breathing! People show off their great results that will give wonderfull offspring. Is free breathing not one of the basic need in every living creature? Breathing free of complications in every situation is only possible when different elements are in harmony with each other. The nostrils, nose passages pharynx, larynx, tonsils, tongue and trachea all have to be clear from deformities. This must be evaluated individually in every dog. One look at the throat area at a young age is not always enough. Expecially when the dog is still growing gives this absolutely no accurate information. It is astonishing what images you can get in a CT image. It is a fact that nor the nostrils, nor the length of the nose is an indication of free breathing. Nose passages of a French Bulldog before surgery. Why a CT scan? A CT scan is a one-time, costly investigation of our dogs. Everyone that is breeding French Bulldogs knows that there are many problems in the breed. Or they should know at least Considering the health improvements that are made the last years have given no real results we should be thinking of new and better ways to make the breed more healthy. The argument of anesthesia is nonsense. Too much in our idea. We think it is irresponsible to not test on this anymore. Syringomyelia is one of the many conditions that can occur in French Bulldogs. Since a couple of years it is know that the deformity is present in the breed, only people did not know what it was. Many French Bulldogs got diagnosed with allergies of neck problems while there war no evidence of it. Veterenarians were not know with Syringomyelia at the time. Now many know of the existence of the disease. Unfortunately this condition can not be seen from the outside. Only through MRI scans you can get a diagnosis. By scanning you can make a responsible combination. But guarantees are not given unfortunately. The inheritance is very complicated. Two MRI-clear parents can produce offspring that is not clear. But also two affected parents can produce clear offspring, although that is not so commom. A breeder that scans can never guarantee a clear puppy because the parents are clear. Of course it is obvious that chances are greatly reduced when buying a puppy from tested parents. Below is a short explanation of the diseases: The problem arises because of a small backside of the skull and, therefore, too small of a hole in the back. This is called the Chiari Malformation CM malformation. Chiari Malformation in most cases does not cause any problems, but can also cause serious symptoms without the presence of SM, but in almost all cases it is the Syringomyelia that causes the pain. The Chiari Malformation forces the brain to fall into the backhole. As a result, the fluid normally circulating through the brain and the spinal cord can be blocked, causing fluid pressure to rise, causing the formation of voids filled with liquid syrinx in the spine. This is called Syringomyelia. In most cases, these animals remain completely free of symptoms, despite the fact that SM is detected by an MRI scan. It is estimated that a small percentage of the dogs with SM detected via MRI also actually show physical symptoms or show them. The exact percentage is not known. The cavities syrinx and the pressure that exert the cavity on the nerve endings can cause neurological side effects that can be very painful. The most common is scratch on one side, but it can occur on both sides. There are no abnormalities visible on the skin or ear. Affected dogs are also sensitive to head, neck and forelegs and often scream for pain without clear reason. The pain can be related to the positioning of the head and some dogs eat and sleep preferably with the head up. Some seriously affected young dogs develop a scoliosis, this is a spinal curve. The phenomena usually arise from the age of six months. Many dogs lead a relatively normal life, but some dogs are deteriorating and are euthanized around middle age. There are therefore clearly different degrees of severity of the disease. Several genes probably play a role.

Purchasing a boxer puppy in North Carolina directly from a breeder can be expensive; however, it is also the best way to ensure that you are getting an animal that has been raised with proper care. Some breeders do not have the right facilities needed to raise healthy dogs and oftentimes these animals may be sickly or lack proper socialization skills due to improper care during development. What Are The Extra Costs? There are very few extra costs associated with owning a Boxer in North Carolina outside of routine vet visits, food, and other supplies that your new pet will need in order to live comfortably. A responsible breeder will typically keep all of their breeding dogs inside of their home and raise them with love and attention. They should also be able to tell you about their history; including any titles that either parent might have earned. A good breeder will give you health guarantees for your new pet as well as plenty of information on how to properly take care of your Boxer throughout its life. Responsible Boxer Breeders will typically not sell puppies to people who plan on leaving them outdoors or alone for long periods of time without supervision because it is important for them to receive plenty of attention while they are young in order for them to grow up healthy and happy. This will give you a chance to learn as much as possible about any sire and dam as well as the environment that they were raised in. Visiting your breeder will also give you a chance to see their home and how they keep their dogs. This will give you a better idea of what type of environment your puppy is coming from and if the breeder is someone that has invested time into raising healthy puppies. You should be able to tell if someone is being honest with you or not from how they answer your questions and whether or not they seem knowledgeable about the breed itself. A good breeder should be willing and able to help you decide what puppy would best suit your lifestyle and family needs, which can only be done if they know everything about you. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in North Carolina It is a good idea to always ask for references from your breeder or anyone who has purchased a puppy from them in the past. If they have any, you should be able to get in contact with at least one person who can tell you about how their experience was with the breeder and whether or not they were satisfied with the way that everything was handled. If you cannot find any references, then this is something that should raise a red flag and may cause you to reevaluate why there are no people willing and able to speak on their behalf. Not having references does not necessarily mean that someone is a bad breeder; however, it does mean that you should take the time to dig a little deeper. A responsible breeder will usually have plenty of satisfied buyers that are willing to share their information about the transaction with future potential owners because it helps ensure that the people they are selling their puppies to will be good homes. Meeting past customers will also give you an idea of how the breeder interacts with their buyers and if they are willing to allow them to ask questions before, during, and after the sale. A good breeder will not only have a veterinarian that they trust and depend on to take care of their dogs, but they will also be willing and able to share the information about them with you. It is extremely important to find out how often your breeder takes their dogs to see a vet because this can also give you an idea as to just how much attention they pay towards making sure that they stay healthy and happy. If someone cannot afford proper veterinary care then breeding these animals should be A Reputable North Carolina Boxer Breeder Will Ask About Your Living Situation Most breeders want to make sure that their puppies are going into a loving home where each one can thrive and receive all of the attention it deserves. You may find yourself at the receiving end of a lot of questions from your breeder which is perfectly normal. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling your local department of agriculture. Look out for red flags when dealing with an unethical breeder in North Carolina; these may include: Claiming that their lineage is rare or includes show-quality dogs without any proof. Lack of Health Certificates Provided. Constantly being asked to pay a higher price after you have already committed. This may also happen if your breeder tries to do business over the phone and refuses to provide any documentation at first. Refusing to provide their contact information, address, or name. Take the time necessary when looking at boxers in NC that will make sure that their lineage is healthy and well taken care of. If your breeder cannot provide you with any information pertaining to potential health problems then this is not someone you should do business with. How to Prepare Your Home for Your Boxer Puppy There are a number of things you will want to consider preparing for before your boxer is set to arrive. First, make sure you stock up on all of the necessary supplies like food and water bowls, toys, treats, bedding, etc. Remember; puppies tend to chew on everything so make sure you keep important documents like remote controls and cell phones out of reach or else they might end up getting destroyed. Puppies also love leather; if given the opportunity they will start chewing away at your furniture corners which will make for a mess to clean up. Potty Training Your New Boxer Puppy Training your boxer to go potty outside will get easier with time; this is one of the most important things you can do when raising your new pup. Remember, patience is key when training any dog; it can be frustrating at times, but you should never hit or otherwise punish your puppy for having an accident. This will only make them more afraid of you and afraid to go near their potty areas in the future. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter.

On-the-go dog shampoo. Labradoodle Coat Color Since the Labradoodle is a mixed breed, a cross between a Labrador retriever and a poodle, you will find a great variety in its coat colors. The price of a Labradoodle is thus affected by how rare and unique a particular coat color is. Take the example of the Phantom Labradoodle or the Parti Labradoodle, or the Tuxedo Labradoodle, which are known for their attractive, multi-colored coats. These varieties thus cost significantly more than the more common, solid-colored ones that are cream or golden-brown throughout. This needs to be taken into account when you go on the search for your ideal pup. Labradoodle Coat Type When it comes to the type of coat and fur, you will come across three Labradoodle varieties. These are those with wavy, curly, or flat coats. These are indicative of the generation of the pup. On average, Labradoodles with curly or wavy coats are found to be more expensive than those with flat coats. This is mostly on account of the former being more hypoallergenic and non-shedding. The three major sizes of a Labradoodle are the standard, small, and medium-size. Apart from these, there is also the mini variety, which has three more sizes, namely, micro, teacup, and toy. The latter, distinct types are going to cost additionally. Demand Much like anything else, the cost of the Labradoodle is also operated by the swings of demand and availability. At the moment, it is certainly one of, if not the most popular crossbreed in the market. The demand has only been growing over the last two decades. When this is the case, instead of forcing the dogs into breeding more pups, the reputable breeders find it more profitable to hike up the price of the individual Labradoodle. This majorly impacts the cost of the breed everywhere. Location The geographical area makes a substantial difference to the cost of a Labradoodle. If in the US, you buy your Labradoodle from a breeder in California, you would be paying a lot more than if you were to get it from a place in the midwest. However, trying to get it from such a place if you live in California might not be the best idea. First, the reduction in price would be compensated by the cost of flying the pup out to you. Plus, actually choosing your pup amongst the others would be a little tough in such a case. Breeder Repute and Record The breeder you get your pup from and if they are reputable or not is a major factor when it comes to calculating the cost. Just as getting a pup from a shelter or a rescue is cheaper, buying it from cheap or at-home breeders will be significantly less expensive. If you are looking to have the puppy in your family for years , making certain that it is in good health and shape is all the more crucial. In the case of a reputable breeder, you can rest assured of the quality of the breed as there are robust health checks and screenings the dogs are subjected to ascertain the health of their heart, patellas, eyes, elbows, hips, etc. Where You Can Find a Labradoodle! Labradoodle Price In USA If you are in the US market for a Labradoodle, you will come across a range of different price tags depending on all the factors we discussed above and especially based on the region you get it from. The price will vary substantially between getting it from a breeder in Texas to one in California or Missouri. However, puppies from such sources, for the most part, come without any health checks or screenings, making the purchase a very risky affair. Thus, it may be in your best interests in the long term to steer clear of the puppy mills that have come up in many areas due to the popularity of the crossbreed. Paying a few hundred dollars more initially is not extravagant if it comes with the health assurance only a reputable breeder can provide. The top five breeders who have been chosen for our list are equally reliable and meet our three main criteria to be deemed as such. Doodledoos — Herefordshire. Doodledoos Australian Labradoodles are family-run, established, and well-respected licensed breeders with over twenty-five years of experience in breeding and raising pure Australian Labradoodle puppies. If you decide to buy one of their adorable Labradoodle puppies, you will also receive a lifetime of support and advice from the breeders themselves. Since Doodledoos Australian Labradoodles are a family-run breeder, they only have a few litters per year, so make sure to contact them and get on their waiting list for their upcoming new litter that is expected in the spring of .DoodleDoos Australian Labradoodles details:. It was developed in the late s in Australia with the objective of producing a hypoallergenic guide dog for people who suffer from allergies. The Labradoodle has become one of the most beloved Poodle mixed breeds in the world because of his gentle disposition, intelligence, and cute appearance. Like most hybrid dogs , LabraDoodle comes in varying sizes, colours, and overall looks. This Labrador Poodle mixed breed has an extensive list of nicknames. History Doodle is believed to have been first bred in Australia in .It was done in the hopes of creating a highly trainable and hypoallergenic guide dog for people allergic to dogs. The first successful cross between a Labrador Retriever and a standard Poodle was done by a man named Wally Conron. It produced a dog named Sultan, which became a guide dog for his new owner who was in need of a guide dog in Hawaii for ten years. The Labradoodle's trainability and gentle nature made him a sought-after breed, both as a guide dog and a family companion. In the present-day, he has also thrived as an assistance and therapy dog. Labradoodle dogs are usually bred by crossing a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. However, multigenerational breeding has been done to create a workable and recognisable breed hopefully. Since the Labradoodle is still considered a hybrid, he is not recognised by the Kennel Club. Appearance and Grooming How big do Labradoodles get? Like most hybrid dogs with parents that differ in size and looks, predicting the overall appearance and adult size of the Labradoodle is quite difficult. They usually exude a graceful appearance with a soft coat, which can either be any of the following textures: The fleece coat, which tends to be long and straight or wavy. This type of coat is low-shedding and has somewhat an angora coat texture because of its silkiness. The wool coat, which is made up of tight curls, takes after the Poodle. This curly-coated type is virtually non-shedding and hypoallergenic. The hair coat, which is the least popular coat type and often seen in first-generation Labradoodles. It takes after the Labrador Retriever, and it sheds profusely all-year-round. Do Labradoodles shed? Labradoodle is a low to average shedder. How much grooming your dog will require depends on the length and texture of the coat. Labradoodles usually only requires brushing once or twice a week. However, some of them might need to be professionally trimmed especially those with fleece coats. Bathing can be done as needed. Aside from brushing, grooming also entails clipping the nails every six to eight weeks and brushing his teeth a minimum of three times a week to prevent halitosis or bad breath. Cleaning your Doodle's ears weekly should also be a part of his regular grooming routine to prevent ear infections. Temperament and Intelligence Do Labradoodles make good pets? The Labradoodle dog breed is a popular choice not only because of his endearing appearance but also his friendly and loving nature. Like his parent breeds, he makes a delightful companion and family pet for children of all ages. He is an excellent match for first-time dog owners too. Whether being first or multigeneration Doodle, he generally will be a good-natured and gentle family dog. The LabraDoodle gets along well with other pets. However, supervision is a must during child—dog or other pet—dog interactions. This will prevent accidents from happening due to rough playing. The Doodle dog is highly trainable because of his intelligent and people-pleasing characteristics. However, as a high-energy dog, his training should include plenty of physically and mentally stimulating activities to match his brainpower. Nutrition and Feeding For an adult Labradoodle, a typical serving is 1 to 2. However, you can always prepare your pet's food, but make sure that you pair it with supplements to avoid nutrient deficiencies. Omega fatty acids could be added to keep your Labradoodle's coat healthy. It is advised to always check with your vet first before putting your Doodle on a new diet or starting with a new supplement. Health and Exercise How long do Labradoodles live? Cross-breeds are often said to be healthier and tend to live longer than purebreds. The Labradoodle is a great proof for this claim as his average lifespan is 12 to 15 years. However, like most breeds, Doodle can be predisposed to certain health problems, which include: Progressive retinal atrophy PRA. However, some pups exchange hands for even more, if they have something which makes them especially desirable examples of what that might be coming up! You may also see Labradoodle puppies advertised for far less. This should be a red flag. A good breeder spends a great deal of money to produce a healthy litter. The costs of breeding a healthy litter include: Health screening for the parents. Travel and accommodation to meet a suitable stud dog. Veterinary costs for mom and her litter. Extra food. Whelping supplies, such as a whelping box, heat mats, and bedding. Time off work to look after mom, and start socializing her puppies. Backyard breeders, puppy mills, and online sellers may offer puppies at bargain prices, but only by cutting their own costs first. So their puppies are more likely to leave home with inherited health problems that require expensive treatment later. Or with behavioral problems like separation anxiety or stranger-directed aggression, which are difficult or impossible to overcome. Lots of people are overwhelmed by the upfront cost of a well bred puppy. Adopting a dog from a shelter is one way to find a dog for less, but without supporting unethical breeding practices. And some regions even have dedicated rescue organizations which specialize in rehoming Labradoodles and other Poodle crosses. This is a much less expensive route and adoption fees often cover things like initial vaccinations and microchipping. Such as whether they carry any late-onset inherited diseases, or are reactive to certain triggers. What Factors Determine Labradoodle Cost? There are a number of factors which may make people willing to pay more for a Labradoodle. Breeder Good breeders are rarely in it for the money. Even if they sell their puppies for a more money than they spent on them, the profit divided by the number of hours they spent caring the dam and her litter works out in cents! All breeders have their own personal philosophy on pricing pups. They might have a reputation and a waiting list which means they can charge more than the competition. They might also charge highly to deter people from buying their puppies on impulse. Provided you ask politely, a reputable breeder will be happy to explain how they arrived at the cost of their puppies. But a breeder who refuses to discuss how they set their price at all may be attempting to cover up the fact that their puppies have been very poorly raised and are not worth the asking price. Breeding Stock Breeders who invest in meticulous health screening of their sire and dam may pass the cost of that onto their buyers, and they have every right to do so. Puppies from thoroughly health tested parents cost more upfront, but they are likely to cost less in lifetime veterinary fees. Labradoodle puppies from parents with show or field titles may also be advertised at higher prices. The puppies of Labradoodles that have been backcrossed with a purebred Poodle will have a greater chance of inheriting the Poodle coat. Other factors There are other things which might affect Labradoodle costs too. For example, in cities and urban areas, miniature Labradoodles might command higher prices than standard Labradoodles. Some factors have nothing to do with the dog at all. For example, many reputable breeders avoid producing litters around Christmas time to avoid buyers passing them on as gifts to other people, or buying them on impulse without really thinking it through. Low quality breeders on the other hand, tend to push their prices up at this time of year. The Cost of Owning a Labradoodle in the First Year Whether you go a shelter or a breeder, adoption fees and purchase price are only the beginning of what it costs to own a Labradoodle. The first year will typically be the most expensive because this is when most major expenses occur. Such as Having the dog spay or neutered. Training classes. Accessories like a crate, bedding, toys, collar and leash. Labradoodles have a high frequency of joint disorders such as hip and elbow dysplasia, which may require expensive monthly prescriptions to manage. Bringing a puppy into your life comes with the responsibility to keep him healthy and happy. From food to medical costs, from toys to grooming, there a number of regular expenses that come with owning a dog. Food is such an essential part of ensuring your dog is healthy and there is a wide range of commercial dog foods available. You can spend tens, or hundred of dollars per month! Always choose a good quality food that lists animal protein as the first ingredient and avoid brands that include meat by-products, fillers, and artificial ingredients that can cause gastrointestinal problems and allergic reactions. This article on feeding a Labradoodle puppy can guide you. Feeding your dog a healthy diet and ensuring an active dog like the Labradoodle gets enough exercise will go a long way to reducing medical costs. However, any dog can develop health issues that require treatment that can run into thousands of dollars. Health problems that the Labradoodle can be susceptible to include: Hip and elbow dysplasia. Close Prices How much to pay for a puppy is always tricky. Variance in the prices between breeders is confusing to families - we understand this. What's Included in the price - vaccines, kennel cough, microchip transfer spay etc? Parental health screening - the more tests, the more expense incurred Reputation and bloodlines We have checklists and questions which we suggest you ask your chosen breeder. These can help you know firstly, what you are buying ,and secondly, what's included. Why Us and our Cobberdogs? Finding a healthy dog from a reputable breeder can be a challenge. The other two remained in Europe until retired. We are fortunate to have Luxor in The US. When it comes to appearance and performance Luxor is one of our all time favorites. His striking black sable color including the black stenciling on his toes is incredible. His performance is extraordinary on every level. His being pain stimulated corrections get him excited combined with his food and play drive enabled him to become so flashy he is in a perpetual state of showing-off, even if just being told to lay down at dinner time. He jumps into every position with his ears up and tail wagging just waiting for another command. In the last 30 years there are only two other dogs, both in Europe,we have seen produce on this level. As an example in Europe puppies are usually brought to training clubs three times a week to imprint protection and begin developing drives and bites. The hope is by 7 to 10 months these young dogs are biting full and hard. The puppies from previous Luxor litters, both in Europe and in the U. What we have consistently seen is the very first training session they demonstrate extreme drive. Their very first bite is completely full and hard as if they have been in training since they were puppies. Kreative Kennels is a working line Professional German Shepherd breeder. Critical factors to consider when selecting a canine for your family protection dog: Never Buy Aggression and Fear Many people confuse confidence with aggression, but this can be an extremely dangerous mistake. An aggressive dog will chase and attack out of fear. This dog can become frenzied and out of control, failing to respond even to his handler. Obedience to the family and handler is of the utmost importance. Every client receives hands-on training on handling their dog before it is released to the family. This assures confidence on the part of the dog and the family with their new partnership. A confident dog will chase and attack only on command, or if his handler or himself is physically attacked first. A confident dog is never frenzied and can be called off immediately and without question. For a family watch dog, we have found that the best dog breed for protection displays confidence and courageousness, making the European German Shepherd the undisputed champ. Working dog competitions specifically test for the most desirable qualities for which German Shepherds were originally bred. While the competition and conformation of dog sports has been opened up in recent years to permit other breeds to compete for titles, few other breeds have been able to demonstrate consistency at the level of the European German Shepherd. The undisputed, most levelheaded award goes to the … European German Shepherd. Obedience, willingness, and reliability are at the heart of the European German Shepherd. These traits in addition to decades of structured breeding and evaluations, are what make them capable of earning top recognition. The European German Shepherd is well known in the working and conformation world as the top breed and the best of the best. Other breeds just fall short in one area or another. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

Take back control of their behavior using these quick and easy solutions to stop German Shepherd biting that actually works. Even better, have a set of toys that are only used when you want to engage in play with your puppy. Hide these toys in a basket or box after your game of play. This makes them extra special. They are under your control and your dog must give them back to you. Special toys are more fun for your pup to bite than you. When in doubt of what special toy your dog likes, choose from this specially-curated list of what toys German Shepherds love for interactive toy ideas to keep your dog entertained. Say OUCH! When your pup bites you, say OUCH firmly. This simple technique catches the attention of many puppies when done correctly and can train a German Shepherd puppy to not bite you. You could also make a YIP sound instead, just like their little brother and sisters would make a yipping noise when playing too rough. If they continue to bite and nip, say OUCH again and then get up immediately and leave the room for a few moments. You may return to play but keep repeating this simple process until they learn to keep their teeth on their toys. This will only encourage them to continue their unwanted behavior. Use Puppy-Safe Partition Gates Only use pet-safe partition gates that are high enough to prevent your German Shepherd from jumping over. If your pup bites you aggressively when you and your family walk past you, then use an exercise pen or this German Shepherd-sized pet safe partition gate to contain them. Only use pet-safe partition gates that are high enough to prevent and discourage your German Shepherd from jumping over to continue to try and bite you. Use the items during busy times in your home to keep your dog calm and out of areas that might increase their excitement and biting and nipping you. Puppies tend to bite and chew when their teeth are coming in. They do this to relieve the pain and help soothe themselves. Freeze a durable large Kong with their favorite treats and kibble and have them on hand for times when your dog is acting out and biting you. Give them a Kong to gnaw on and bring icy relief to their gums. Plus, chewing has been shown to help relax and calm dogs. Redirections are actions that keep your pup from engaging in unwanted behavior by showing them appropriate behavior. For example: When your dog nips you, find their teething toy to bite instead. When your dog jumps on you to bite your hands or ankles, look around for a Kong to give to them to bite on. Squeaky toys like this toy that continues to squeak , even after a puncture, are ideal to distract your dog from your hand to another object. These toys differ from their special toys mentioned above because these redirection toys are ones you leave out for your pup to chew most of the time. So, be sure to have them nearby! Use Daily Leadership Skills How many times a day do you teach your German Shepherd to listen to you and offer them leadership? Use daily interactions as an effective way of teaching your dog about leadership. Have them sit before you take them for a walk or exiting a door. Ignore them altogether. Only offer them interaction and come back to them when they show you calming behaviors. Our dogs love our attention. And German Shepherds crave it! An overfed dog that is under-exercised may display destructive behaviors because of boredom and lack of energy needs being met. Get up off the couch and go outside for a walk and sniff party. Low impact activities and free-running off-leash running are best. Choose from a list of fun and gentle, age-appropriate German Shepherd puppy exercises to keep your pup healthy and better behaved. Stop roughhousing with your dog before it frustrates them. Use appropriate, puppy-safe toys instead of play sessions. This way, your pup can bite the toy instead of your fingers, hands, or arms. You may also stress out your GSD by engaging them rough of play. For your pup to either keep up with the play or stop you from too rough play, they may bite you! From day one, avoid play that involves mouthing or teeth on the skin. Use toys to provide your dog a way they can bite to release their energy… Without nipping you! And this game is great because it teaches your dog a necessary life skill. Practice the game: multiple times a day for 2 to 3 minutes at a time Your pup learns impulse control during the game and this transfers over to their ability to stop themselves from biting you. Read below for the easy-to-follow directions. If your dog gets too worked up and then bites, then teach them this Rev Up and Cool Down game. After a few running steps and before your pup gets too excited, stop running and walk slowly. Keep moving slowly until your dog also slows down. When you see them slow down, take a few more steps calmly and peacefully. Continue with steps one through three. Each time your dog should slow down sooner and quicker. If your puppy knows any of these basic German Shepherd commands , incorporate those commands to make the training more interesting and fun. The link above will also easily explain how to teach over ten commands! The point of the Rev Up and Cool Down game is to teach them to settle and stay calm without nipping and biting you. You need to keep your pup exercised, mentally stimulated, and show them what calming behavior is. Be fair and understanding. She has a Bachelor of Science degree, with Honors, and has been training dogs for over a decade. Related Posts. This is especially true with dogs like German Shepherds because they have a strong prey drive, but this nipping and biting can also quickly get out of hand. This often comes out as biting and nipping, but puppies will also bite when they are teething and to taste the world around them. This can, of course, quickly get out of hand if not taken care of swiftly. In this article, we look at the reasons behind German Shepherd puppies biting and seven steps to help stop the behavior. Training The first and most important step in stopping your puppy from biting is early and focused training. Beginning training at an early age is vital for powerful dogs like GSDs, as without it, they can easily develop problematic behaviors and even become aggressive. An important part of training is socialization, and getting your GSD to interact with other dogs will help teach them boundaries, as any biting too hard will have instant consequences for them. Image Credit: AnjaGh, Pixabay 2. Toys Toys are ideal for your GSD puppy to exercise their teething. There is a massive variety of suitable chew toys available, and whenever you notice your pooch getting the urge to chew, you can gently offer them a chew toy instead. Commands Basic and simple commands should be taught to your GSD from a young age. Whenever they get overexcited and bite down too hard, you can then simply issue a verbal command that catches their attention. After you issue the commands, leave your puppy alone for a few minutes so they learn that this behavior is unacceptable. Image Credit: Jim Sluder, Pixabay 4. Redirection Redirection is a useful tool in training and can work well with biting too. This method is simple and works by keeping your pup from unwanted behavior and offering them appropriate behavior instead. Whenever your pooch bites or nips, try to offer them a chew toy of some kind instead, and this will gradually lead them to chew toys as opposed to your hands. Squeak toys are great for this type of redirection, as the noise is enticing to most puppies and dogs. Reward good behavior Positive reinforcement training methods are best for leading your puppy toward desired behaviors and away from unwanted ones. These methods involve no scolding or harsh treatment, so they are ideal for cementing the bond between you and your pup. When you offer your dog a chew toy instead of biting and they take it or you issue a command that they instantly follow, you simply reward that behavior with either a treat or praise. You ignore any bad behavior. They will swiftly associate treats with good behavior and stop the bad behavior that gets them no attention. Image Credit: Happy monkey, Shutterstock 6. Games Since GSDs are such powerful and athletic animals, they need to be mentally and physically stimulated through games and interactive play. Games are also the best time to engage and enforce training techniques and get your GSD accustomed to them before biting gets out of hand. Stick to simple games like fetch or frisbee, where you can train your pooch to give the ball back when you tell them to. Harsh treatments like hitting or shouting are highly unlikely to solve the problem and will probably just make it worse, as your dog will simply become nervous and wary of you. With a powerful dog like German Shepherds, trust is vital. They are highly intelligent and aware animals, and the smallest of sounds or movements are enough to set them off. There are several reasons for this, including: GSD puppies will begin teething as early as 2 weeks old, and this can be uncomfortable and even painful for them. This behavior can go on until your puppy is 6 months old, and they will chew on almost anything that they can find — including your hand — in an attempt to try and soothe their discomfort. Separated too young. The first 2 months of your GSDs life is vital to their socialization and learning, and if they are taken away from their mother and litter too young, this may cause a lack of understanding of boundaries. Puppies will play and learn with the rest of their littermates, where they learn to control the force of their bite. GSDs should be at least 8 weeks old before they are re-homed. Fear or overstimulation. Fear, anxiety, and overstimulation are common reasons for puppies to lose control of their bite because this can cause them to become irritable or defensive and lead them into the habit of biting. Conclusion Since German Shepherds are such powerful dogs, proper training is vital, and bite inhibition is an essential part of that training. Proper training is the vital first step and will set the tone for all other methods. With time, consistency, patience, and gentle leadership, your German Shepherd puppy should kick the biting habit in no time. Puppies Have you ever reached down to play with a German Shepherd puppy, only to have that adorable little fur-ball pierce your skin with its razor-sharp puppy teeth? When I brought Allie into the family, she was fully in the German Shepherd puppy biting phase — so that first month was tough! Unfortunately, biting is an inevitable phase of puppyhood — it comes with the territory when you decide to be a puppy parent. My goal with this guide is to get you through the biting stage with as few battle scars as possible. Why do German Shepherd Puppies Bite? Up until this time, your puppy was with its littermates, and playtime meant lots of mouthy, nipping fun. Accordingly, this is the only way your GSD knows how to play! A German Shepherd puppy also uses their mouths to explore different things like toys — or hands, ankles, furniture… pretty much anything they can get their mouth around. Your puppy could also be teething, which can increase their mouthy behavior. Just be patient as you work through the German Shepherd puppy biting phase — give your pup time to learn to be gentle when playing or seeking your attention. Nothing is worse than an ankle-biter! I was very lucky not to have this problem with Allie. Why does your German Shepherd puppy target the ankles? Because your GSD is a working dog trying to do its job — herd you around the house like livestock. German Shepherds were originally bred for herding flocks of sheep. Your furry pal may also think heel nipping is just a really fun game. Using a toy as a distraction and keeping your pup active will help nip ankle nipping in the bud! Because she was too busy biting hands! There are lots of reasons why a pup may decide to start biting your hands. For one, good things treats, toys, love, attention come from hands. Also, hands are almost like swinging toys from the perspective of a playful pup — too enticing to pass up! How to Discourage Biting Behavior While the German Shepherd puppy biting phase is a rite of passage, there are some ways you can discourage bad biting behavior without harsh discipline. This is one of the most effective ways to teach your German Shepherd bite inhibition — or how to be gentle with her teeth. Think about when your pup was rolling and playing with their brothers and sisters — if your GSD was too rough, their sibling would let out a yelp. This trick worked great with Allie! Just make sure to be consistent until your pup gets the idea and learns to master the power of her jaws. Puppies will be puppies! Redirect the biting to an appropriate toy. For example, when your fuzzy friend latches onto your ankles, give a little puppy-like yelp, and then whip out a toy and encourage your dog to chew on that instead. Tug-of-war is the perfect game for the puppy biting phase. Socialize your puppy as much as possible. Other dogs are great at teaching your puppy that they playing too rough and biting too hard. Try a deterrent to prevent your dog from chewing or biting. If all else fails, there are lots of products designed to deter your dog from bad biting behavior. How do they work? Well, they taste awful. But if used correctly, they can definitely work. This is still attention — your puppy bites, your puppy gets attention. Otherwise, your pup may see this as a fun new game, kind of like tug-of-war but with your hands or feet as the toy. You want your furball to love playing with you! The goal here is to encourage your German Shepherd to play as much as ever but to play gently. As a pup, Allie thought she should greet everyone by jumping in their face and nipping — kind of like a kiss hello, but with teeth. And as she got bigger, it was harder to control. But trust me, it got old quickly. Be proactive. If I knew someone was coming over, I would put Allie in another room or in her crate. Once our visitor was in the house and the initial excitement had passed, I would let her out. By keeping her from greeting people right when they walked through the door, I could minimize her overzealous behavior. This is a simple command that teaches your dog to stay in her place until you give a release command. This is another way to allow the initial excitement to pass and your German Shepherd to calm down a bit before greeting anyone. Redirect attention to a toy like I talked about earlier. Fold your arms and turn away. Keep turning until your GSD stops jumping, then praise them and use a treat as a reward. What to Do If Biting Becomes Aggressive Although puppy mouthing is normal, there can be cases where biting can signal problems and possibly even aggression. Look for physical differences in your pup. If your puppy is having a moment of aggression, their body may stiffen when snarling, and bites will typically be more painful than during regular play. Also, if your GSD puppy is biting out of fear or frustration, you may need to take action. These types of behavior are not something your pup will just grow out of. While the biting phase will inevitably end, you may find yourself asking the infamous question — when do German Shepherds calm down!? I asked myself and our vet this question more than once! It honestly just depends. Sure, she had her calm moments thanks in part to her training , but she was still very hyper especially in more excitable moments. The type of German Shepherd dog is yet another variable that plays a role in its energy levels. So when do German Shepherds calm down? It really depends on your individual German Shepherd. Final Thoughts Unfortunately, the German Shepherd puppy biting phase is something all GSD puppy owners will go through, but it will pass. Try the tips above to help keep your sanity during this phase. Or any tips to help the rest of us? Please share!

Labradoodles are well-known for their happy-go-lucky temperaments. In fact, there are quite a few key considerations that set ethical breeders apart from others. So, before we reveal to you our list of the best ethical Labradoodle breeders, here are the most important things you should look for when choosing an ethical Labradoodle breeder in Maine. Ethical Labradoodle breeders in Maine test all of their parent dogs for various genetic conditions. Health and genetic testing greatly minimizes the risk of the puppies inheriting serious health conditions, which can affect their quality of life and even their lifespan. Speaking of which, ethical breeders also provide at least a two-year health guarantee for any serious genetic conditions. Information about the health guarantee should always come in written form with your adoption documents. However, we recommend you also do your own research and check for reviews on Google, Facebook, Yelp, Reddit, or on your local online forums and communities such as here at Doodle Doods. In addition to that, if any of your friends, family members, or neighbors have recently adopted a Labradoodle, ask them about their own experiences with Labradoodle breeders in Maine. Some breeders are also recommended by Good Dog or Goldendoodles. All of these organizations require that their certified breeders follow their strict health and genetic testing protocols and ethical breeding practices. Today, there are very few Labradoodle breeders in Maine who are affiliated with any of the organizations we mentioned above, especially compared to some other states. Their main focus is on breeding mild-tempered pups that have allergy-friendly, low-shedding coats. What Makes This Breeder Unique? Log Cabin Labradoodles is a state-licensed breeding facility. Their puppies are born and raised in a large, sunlit nursery, where the breeders spend most of their time nurturing them. However, they also spend time with the pups in the family living areas, where they get to socialize and get used to all the regular household sights and sounds. Puppy Application Hi Everyone!! I continue to be the best dog in the world and everyone wants to buy me from Mom. I am still working as a therapy dog at the York Hospital and when Mom goes there without me everyone asks where Bentley is. I was banned from the pharmacy because while Mom was talking I was slowly and quietly sneaking candy bars off the bottom shelf. Love, Bentley and his family Christine, Hope this finds you well. Just a quick note, we know you are very busy these days. Cello just turned a year old and he is such a gem. Smart, sweet, gentle, and I could go on. We are so blessed to have found you and him and cannot thank you enough. It is sometimes embarrassing when we take him to the dog park as people often seem to like him better than their own dogs. He is by far the best dog. On that note, we would like to get on the waiting list for another puppy to get Cello a sister. Thank you again, so much! Hello Chriistine, We will never be able to express enough gratitude for you allowing us to have Griffin in our lives. He is so amazing. David is smitten. Hi Christine, I wanted to give you a quick update on Hops. He is an absolutely amazing dog. He loves hiking, camping, swimming, agility. There really isn't too much that he doesn't enjoy doing. He has the nicest personality and is a happy laid back pooch. He has the perfect temperament for therapy work and is going to bring so much joy to people. I am so excited to get started with him. The evaluators were blown away by how focused, obedient, and friendly he was. He is a great dog and we all adore him. Have a wonderful holiday season and thank you for pairing us with Hops. He couldn't be more perfect. She's the most loving and devoted dog I've ever had and I appreciate having her with me more than I can say. I can't thank you enough for breeding such amazing puppies - i know they all have hearts like Cricket - warm, generous, loving and brilliant. She's so happy learning new tasks. She makes me laugh all the time. Her favorite place to be is Chicago Shakespeare Theater, which is her home away from home. She's everybody's favorite girl and plays ball in the big lobby when there's not a show going on. She's also a favorite patron in the pub after the shows. She visits all the tables and enjoys getting lots of attention. Who wouldn't? Slide title Dear Christine, We love Snowball, he has been re-named to Rachmoninoff, but for the most part we call him Rocky our other labradoddle is Mozart, whom we call Mo. He and Mo have been interviewed and have an upcoming article in a lovely Vero Beach magazine on "Boat Dogs". Mozart has done 20, sea miles as we travel a lot by boat. Rocky went on his first sea adventure 20 miles, and was very calm and content, he is a lovely dog and we of course love him. We are now back in Maine. This creates increased demand for certain pugs over others, and their prices will reflect this demand. AKC Standard breed pugs have fawn or black-colored fur. Most ideal pugs are bred to be squarish and cobby, not lean at all. FCI breed pugs can come in various colors, including silver, apricot, fawn, or black. They are distinguished from other breeds by the possibility of getting silver or apricot fur coloring. Pugs gained the attention of the English aristocracy in the 16th century when William of Orange took the throne. With his unique pug breed, the dog became extremely popular in Europe. Their coloring includes fawn with a black mask, apricot with a black mask, silver with a black mask, or pure black. Canadian Kennel Club This pug breed reached its height of popularity during the reign of Queen Victoria, who kept several of these tiny dogs as her pets. Many replicas of the breed have survived over the centuries, demonstrating their popularity with the aristocracy. As for their coloring, they may be solid black, silver fawn, or apricot fawn. No matter their color, they will have black masks and ears. Platinum Pug Price As with all dogs bred with care, platinum pugs are usually pricey. You may be able to find some cheaper depending on where you look, but this is the general price you could expect to be charged for a platinum pug. This kind of breeding will also help reduce the risk of health issues that plague pugs later in their lives. Are Platinum Pugs Rare? Platinum pugs are rarer than typical breeds of a pug, yes. The breeding that produces a platinum pug causes them to be less common than other less refined breeds. However, platinum pugs are not as rare as some other types of pugs. For example, white or albino pugs are much rarer, and their price reflects that rarity. These types of pugs are usually even more expensive than platinum pugs. Final Thoughts For dog fans, it may be no surprise that there are tons of variations of each breed of dog , and pugs are no exception to this rule. Platinum pugs are a rare pug breed with specific fur colors. The quality of the color of their coat is typically higher than other breeds of pug. Some Pugs do not have the typical black mask over their eyes and ears like most. Instead, maskless Pugs have a fawn or silver color coat that is mainly uniform throughout. Double Mask Pugs Image Credit: Katrinbechtel, Pixabay Double mask Pugs have a black mask on their face but also have black patches on their ears that look like a second mask. This unique pattern is rare but is gaining popularity among breeders. Pugs inherit their coats from their parents, and the genes for certain coat colors or patterns will be passed down through generations. Some Pug breeders may try creating unique coat patterns or colors, but this can be tricky as the results may only sometimes be as expected. Fawn and black Pugs are the most common coat colors, with silver, apricot , and brindle being less common. White Pugs are relatively rare, but some breeders specialize in producing them. Solid coats are generally more popular than other patterns, but double mask Pugs can be seen occasionally. Finally, for those looking for something truly unique, maskless Pugs can provide a one-of-a-kind look. Many breeders specialize in certain colors or patterns and can help you find the perfect Pug to fit your needs. Please keep in mind that what is far more important when choosing a Pug is how it fits into your household and lifestyle. Pugs are prone to skin conditions and allergies, which can cause itching, scratching, and discomfort. Proper grooming and hygiene are essential to help prevent these issues. Pugs also shed a lot, especially during certain times of the year. Regular brushing and grooming can help manage shedding and prevent hair build-up. Finally, the folds on their faces can be prone to irritation and infection, so owners should clean the face folds to prevent any health issues. Bathe your Pug every 3—4 months to maintain cleanliness and prevent odors. Use a high-quality shampoo and conditioner formulated for dogs to avoid irritation or other issues. A: No, Pugs are not considered to be hypoallergenic. They do shed quite a bit , so those with allergies may want to look for a different breed. Q: Is it true that some colors of Pug are good luck? A: Some cultures believe that having certain colors of Pug can bring good luck. In China, for example, black Pugs are often seen as symbols of wealth and prosperity. Similarly, white Pugs bring peace and serenity to their owners in Japan. However, these beliefs vary from culture to culture and should not be the only reason to choose a particular color or pattern. A: Mixing the Pug with other breeds can yield some interesting and unique results. Conclusion Pugs are a unique breed of dog with a variety of colors and patterns that make them stand out from other dogs. From solid color coats to combination patterns like the brindle pattern, Pug parents have a lot of choices when it comes to selecting a Pug with a beautiful coat. However, Pug parents should also be aware of some of the potential health concerns related to Pug coats and take proper measures to prevent them. See also:.

Breeders developed Toy Poodles in 18th century England as smaller versions of their German predecessors. The Toy Poodle began to represent social status, and nobles would decorate their dogs in high fashion of the time. They became so popular, in fact, that they were one of the first toy breeds recognized by the Kennel Club. Toy Poodles are smart cookies. Their intelligence is one of their predominant features, and is often showcased during obedience training. These dogs have tremendous problem-solving capabilities that make them ideal for competitions. On the other hand, this same intelligence makes for an easily bored pup. They need mental stimulation, like challenging games and toys , to keep their busy minds occupied. The Toy Poodle may also be suspicious of strangers and slow to warm up to new people. This dog breed can adapt to a wide range of living situations due to their small size. As a matter of fact, they have trouble dealing with any kind of alone time. As such, the Toy Poodle is an excellent companion animal for people who love a little company. There are a few health conditions that Toy Poodles are more susceptible to than other dog breeds. For example, they may suffer from eye disorders, like cataracts, or blood clotting disorders, like Hemophilia. Because of their size, they may also bear the risk of dental crowding, kneecap migration, or trachea instability. With regular visits to the veterinarian, many of these potential health concerns can be comfortably managed. Owners typically have an easy time during obedience training with Toy Poodles. Their intelligence often hastens the training process. However, they can present destructive tendencies when left to their own devices for too long. Toy Poodles have famously low-shedding coats. They lack undercoats, so their shedding is minimal. Their fur is hypoallergenic and mats rather than sheds. These pups will only need to be groomed to prevent matting and increase shine. Usually, brushing your Toy Poodle once or twice a week and grooming every six weeks is sufficient. As a small dog breed, they are more prone to developing dental disease so good dental care is important. Poodles are an active breed in general, and Toy Poodles in specific are just as active. After a few laps around the kitchen, the Toy Poodle will tire out and happily sit by their owners during daily activities. The Toy Poodle stands at a mighty inches at the shoulder. Their weight ranges from pounds and usually averages around 8 pounds. Toy Poodles usually live 12 — 15 years. The Poodle coat is built for the water and even the Toy Poodle tends to have excellent, practically innate, swimming abilities. Featured Toy Poodle Article. Call today for more info! Learn More The Bassetoodle is another up and coming Poodle mix that we expect to become more popular in the upcoming years. In this guide, we learn everything about the Bassetoodle, including their appearance, activity levels, temperament, health, grooming, and much more. Both Basset Hounds and Poodles are among the most well-known dog breeds out there. The Basset Hound is instantly recognized by its long body and short, stubby legs. By combining these two purebred dogs, it results in an easygoing and loving Doodle with a great personality. From the Basset Hound parent, Bassetoodles inherit their friendly and gentle demeanor, whereas the Poodle heritage contributes to their high levels of intelligence and, of course, the hypoallergenic coat. In terms of the Bassetoodle size, they can be created by using either Standard, Miniature, or Toy Poodles. However, the most popular choice for this Doodle is the Miniature Poodle. However, as Doodle breeds keep on trending, we expect to see more of the Bassetoodle in the near future. Bassetoodle Physical Appearance Color Bassetoodle puppies can inherit a variety of coat colors that originate from their purebred Basset Hound and Poodle parents. Most commonly, Bassetoodles come in brown, tan, golden, black, white, cream, red, and blue coats. Additionally, they may also inherit beautiful patterned coats, such as the gorgeous bi-color and tri-color coats, the latter being one of the most recognizable Basset Hound coat colors. Some puppies may take more after the Basset Hound parent, whereas others resemble more of the Poodle. And, some puppies will inherit their traits from both sides of the lineage. It all boils down to their genetics. Similarly, the Bassetoodle can come in three different coat types. On the other hand, some Bassetoodles inherit the straight Basset Hound coat that tends to shed, and others get a wavy combination coat inspired by both of the purebred parents. For people who struggle with dog allergies, a curly-coated Bassetoodle would be the safest choice. However, the Poodle genes usually work their magic even in straight coat Bassetoodles. Although straight-coated Bassetoodles are not an ideal choice for allergies, they still shed much less compared to the purebred Basset Hound parent. So, the best way to predict the size of a Bassetoodle puppy is by looking at its parents. Surprisingly enough, the Basset Hound is a medium to large-sized breed with an average weight of 40 to 65 pounds. But thanks to their short legs, these pups only grow up to 15 inches tall. Based on weight, the Standard Poodle would be the perfect size to pair the Basset Hound with. Miniature Poodles weigh between 10 and 20 pounds with an average height of 10 to 15 inches measured from the shoulder. In contrast, Standard Poodles weigh around 38 to 70 pounds with an average height of 24 to 27 inches. Quite tall compared to the Basset Hound! So, how big will a Bassetoodle get? Although the Bassetoodle is not as established as some other Doodle breeds, we can make some pretty accurate guesstimates of their height and weight. When the Miniature Poodle is used in the mix, Bassetoodles usually weigh between 20 and 30 pounds, and they stand between 12 and 16 inches tall at the shoulder. However, if either Toy or Standard Poodles are used to create Bassetoodles, we can expect there to be much more variation in terms of size. Just like the Basset Hound parent, Bassetoodles tend to come with shorter legs and longer bodies. But, thanks to the Poodle genes in the mix, it will be slightly more balanced out compared to the purebred Basset Hound. To create hybrid breeds like the Basset-Poodle mix, breeders can use either a purebred Basset Hound and Poodle parent, or produce later generations, such as the first-generation backcross Bassetoodle, or even second-generation Doodle. Sounds confusing, right? Bassetdoodle Description The Bassetoodle is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Basset Hound and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. At almost 2 years old he weighs a little under 27 pounds 12 kg and is 14 inches 35 cm at the shoulder. Personality: very playful, dog and people friendly, higher energy level than a Basset, but not as hyper as most Toy Poodles. His wire coat sheds seasonally and needs to be stripped twice a year. It's a female; her father is a brown Basset short fur and her mother is a white Poodle, a little bigger than a toy Poodle. She is really fat; one reason is because her internal organs are too big for her body, but she is really cute. She weighs 23 lbs. She is mellow and peaceful inside the house and likes nothing more than to curl up beside you. When outside she is thrilled to see anyone! She loves kids, licks the cat's face clean every morning, and enjoys startling, but not chasing, our two birds. She wags her tail like crazy when she sees someone she knows! Her hair and toenails grow quickly and require regular grooming. I love those large windblown ears and the soft white Poodle hair with lemon and white Bassett markings! They would go around with their masters to get their affection. The bassetoodles are curious dogs and would follow anything that comes their way. They would often get very nosey, enjoying sniffing your boxes, mail, purses, bags, dirty clothes, its bed or yours, and so on. Though they are affectionate, happy, and friendly in nature, they, at times, might display stubborn behavior. Being mischievous, their fondness might reach to such a level that they might, at times, jump onto people. They also love kids, and would play with them and other pets in the family. These silly animals would be ideal for anyone who is in of a faithful companion. However, care must also be taken that your kids to not get over-enthusiastic and jump or sit on their backs. This might prove to be dangerous since they are dogs with a long back. The bassetoodle also love to go out, get groomed or ride a car. Like their basset hound parent, they would howl more than bark. They would use their voices to let their family members aware of strangers or intruders, or just anything suspicious. They would also get noisy, if left alone for long hours, or are constantly provoked. They have a tendency to wander off if they find a scent, and if the owners are not keeping an eye on this. Care Exercise The playful bassetoodles love to play. Take them to the dog park every day, or play with your pet inside a safe, well-fenced yard since they can roam or follow scents. Though, regular exercise is also necessary. They love long walks. Take them out for daily walks with you, or for a little jogging. Also, make sure, you allow your dog to be without a leash for sometime every day, since they do not always prefer to be in a leash. Grooming These dogs are average to heavy shedders, and you need to groom them frequently. Brushing them at least 2 to 3 times a week is recommended. You can even bathe them once every two weeks to ensure cleanliness, as also to retain the sheen of its coat. A good brushing session would also resist the hair from matting. Trim them occasionally, including the regions around the anus and the eyes. Many owners love to keep the longer eyebrows and whiskers of their bassetoodle. Health Problems No breed specific health problems are reported, except for genetic and general dog diseases. Training These are quite intelligent dogs and are ever ready to please their masters, and hence, it is quite easy to train. Because it is natural for the bassetoodle to show obstinate behavior, you must train them with leadership. They should be dealt with firm authority and may require a firm, authoritative training style. This breed does well with agility, hunting, and obedience training. Begin training from the time you adopt your puppy from the breeders, or from a shelter or some rescue. Give them proper training about housebreaking, obedience, crate, etc. But make sure you choose the right quality of food, and those that abide by the nutrition level that they need. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Bassetoodle Overview The Bassetoodle is a typically laid-back and easygoing pup that enjoys burning off energy before relaxing with their dog parents. While the Basset Hound is often associated with laziness, the Poodle contributes excitement and an inquisitive nature to this mix. Training the Bassetoodle can present some challenges. While both parent breeds are intelligent and have been used as working dogs, Basset Hounds are known for their stubbornness. Poodles, on the other hand, are highly trainable but can also display independent tendencies. Consistency and a firm approach to discourage negative behaviors are crucial when training this breed. Short daily training sessions lasting minutes are recommended to maintain their attention and facilitate progress. Enrolling in puppy classes or general obedience training with a professional can also be beneficial. The Bassetoodle may not be the best fit for novice dog parents, as prior experience with hounds and their stubborn nature is preferable. They can be strong-willed and require mental and physical stimulation. Without proper stimulation, they can become bored and frustrated, despite the love they receive. Separation anxiety is also a possibility in this breed. Dog parents who are frequently home or have the ability to bring their pups to work are well-suited for this breed, although it is not a strict requirement. Daily walks of at least 35 minutes are recommended for the Bassetoodle. Although they have lower exercise requirements due to their relaxed Basset Hound heritage, they still benefit from mental stimulation. Training sessions, scentwork activities, and other forms of enrichment can provide the mental engagement they need. It is important to note that Bassetoodles can exhibit behaviors that humans find frustrating, such as digging and excessive barking when they are understimulated or bored. Bassetoodle Highlights Friendly and affectionate: Bassetoodles are known for their loving and gentle personalities. They are very good with children and other pets, and they make great family dogs. Intelligent and easy to train: Bassetoodles are relatively intelligent dogs and are easy to train with positive reinforcement. They are eager to please their owners and love to learn new things. Low-maintenance: Bassetoodles are relatively low-maintenance dogs, but they do require some regular exercise and grooming. They should be brushed at least once a week to prevent mats and tangles. They may also need to be trimmed or clipped every few months, depending on the length of their coat. Versatile: Bassetoodles can adapt to a variety of living situations, including apartments and houses. They are also good with a variety of activities, such as hiking, swimming, and playing fetch. Health: Bassetoodles are generally healthy dogs, but they can be prone to some health problems, such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and eye problems. It is important to have them regularly checked by a veterinarian. However, both parent breeds have rich backgrounds and are highly regarded. Initially prized by French aristocrats, Basset Hounds later became popular among commoners after the French Revolution. These hunting dogs were valued by those who needed companions they could follow on foot, as they lacked access to horses. Basset Hounds made their way to Britain in the midth century. Millais started his own breeding program and collaborated with Lord Onslow and George Krehl on their respective programs. As for the Poodle, it is one of the oldest breeds specifically developed for waterfowl hunting. While its origins trace back to Germany, the Poodle became its own distinct breed in France. French hunters utilized the Standard Poodle primarily for duck hunting and the Miniature Poodle, a mid-sized variant, for truffle hunting in the woods. However, by the mids, the Poodle had become the most popular breed in the country, maintaining this position for over two decades. Bassetoodle Size The Bassetoodle is a substantial mixed breed, characterized by its stout legs that give the impression of a smaller size despite its weight. As a crossbreed, the Bassetoodle does not have a standardized breed standard. Therefore, their coat colors can vary, drawing from the palette of both parent breeds. However, it is common to find Bassetoodles with white coats adorned with brown and black markings. Their coat texture often leans towards the curly and wavy patterns inherited from the Poodle parent. Bassetoodle Personality The Bassetoodle is known to be generally good-natured and affectionate towards familiar individuals, but they can display a standoffish demeanor towards strangers. It is crucial to prioritize socialization from a young age for every dog, regardless of their inherent temperament. Proper socialization helps prevent reactivity towards people or other dogs, which can limit their experiences in life, such as visiting dog-friendly establishments or enjoying playtime at the dog park. Consistent and positive reinforcement training during their early years is key to enhancing their overall quality of life, as well as your own. It is important to establish firm and consistent training practices, and if behavioral issues arise, seeking the assistance of a professional trainer can be beneficial. Bassetoodle Health The Bassetoodle, like many dog breeds, may be prone to certain health conditions that require attention and care. It is important to be aware of these potential issues to ensure the well-being of your Bassetoodle. Here are some health concerns that can affect this breed: Hip Dysplasia : Bassetoodles may be susceptible to hip dysplasia, a condition characterized by abnormal development of the hip joints. It can lead to discomfort, pain, and mobility issues. Obesity : Bassetoodles have a tendency to gain weight, so it is important to provide them with a balanced diet and regular exercise to prevent obesity. Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial to avoid putting extra strain on their joints and overall health. Bloat : Bassetoodles are also at risk for bloat, a serious condition where the stomach fills with gas and can twist on itself. Prompt veterinary attention is necessary if bloat is suspected. Panosteitis : This condition involves inflammation of the long bones, commonly seen in young dogs. It can cause lameness and discomfort but usually resolves with proper care and management. Glaucoma : Bassetoodles may have a higher predisposition to glaucoma, a condition characterized by increased pressure within the eye. Regular eye examinations and early detection are important to prevent vision loss. Allergies : Like many dogs, Bassetoodles can develop allergies, which can manifest as skin irritations, itching, or gastrointestinal issues. Identifying and managing allergens can help alleviate these symptoms. Intervertebral Disc Disease : Bassetoodles may be prone to intervertebral disc disease IVDD , a condition that affects the spinal discs. It can lead to pain, nerve compression, and even paralysis if left untreated. Early recognition and appropriate treatment are crucial for the well-being of affected dogs. Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight are essential for managing and minimizing the risk of these health issues. Additionally, staying attentive to any signs of discomfort or unusual behaviors and seeking veterinary care when necessary will contribute to the overall health and happiness of your Bassetoodle. Bassetoodle Care The Bassetoodle, like most breeds, thrives on daily exercise to maintain their well-being. While they have a playful nature, a significant portion of their stimulation can come from mental activities, alongside regular physical exercise. Ideally, this breed should engage in at least a minute walk each day. In addition to walks, Bassetoodles enjoy both indoor and outdoor playtime, such as playing fetch or engaging in a game of tug-of-war. While a backyard is not a requirement, it can be beneficial for this breed to have a space where they can release any excess energy. It is worth considering that Bassetoodles may not be the most suitable choice for apartment living. Although they are easygoing and can enjoy themselves in smaller spaces, their characteristic loud howl may become bothersome to other tenants Bassetoodle Feeding To ensure optimal health, the Bassetoodle should be provided with a diet appropriate for a small breed with medium energy levels. They are often motivated by challenging puzzle toys as well. When working on trick-training or rewarding good behavior, consider using low-calorie treats like sweet potatoes. As each dog has unique dietary requirements, it is advisable to consult your veterinarian to determine the best food options for your Bassetoodle. Their expertise will help ensure that your pup receives a balanced and appropriate diet for their specific needs. Regular brushing sessions, typically two to three times a week, are recommended to remove debris and prevent matting. Pay special attention to their long ears, as they can impede proper air circulation and increase the risk of ear infections. Bathing should be done as needed, usually no more than once a month, to keep the coat clean and fresh. For more intricate grooming tasks like clipping or complex coat maintenance, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a professional groomer who is experienced with this breed. Keeping their nails at an appropriate length is essential for their comfort and overall well-being. This breed is known for being affectionate and well-behaved around children , making them great family pets. While proper introductions are necessary, they can also form strong bonds with other dogs in the family. However, due to their hunting background, they may not be suitable for households with small animals like hamsters. On the other hand, Bassetoodles can generally coexist well with cats. While they may initially be cautious with strangers, this breed tends to have an easygoing nature and is generally friendly with almost everyone. Bassetoodle Rescue Groups As a designer breed, dedicated rescue groups specifically for the Bassetoodle may be limited. However, there are numerous deserving dogs in shelters waiting for their forever homes. Remember, adopting a rescue pup is a wonderful choice. Bassetoodle Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have health problems and behavioral issues. But before you make that life-changing decision, it makes sense to do your research. Bassetoodles can be stubborn, which means that first-time dog owners can find them a bit of a challenge in terms of training. Choosing to work with a professional dog trainer is the best way of finding out the methods that will suit these dogs the best. If you or your neighbors are sensitive to noise, you should know that these dogs love to howl! While they might not bark as much as some other breeds, they are capable of making quite a racket. They also love spending time with their humans — so much so, that they can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. Bassetoodles are registered with several breed registries. The Bassetoodle will follow its nose anywhere. This hybrid breed has inherited the superior tracking ability of its Basset Hound parent. In terms of scenting capabilities, the Basset Hound is the second most capable breed at sniffing out and following a scent. Their Bassetoodle progeny are also keen trackers as a result! While tracking a scent, the Bassetoodle will let out a loud bark. A throwback to their Basset Hound parent, this bark is designed to let handlers locate their dogs. The Bassetoodle combines the best of both parent breeds. Your pup may look more like their Poodle parent but have the character of a Basset Hound or the other way around! The best way to be sure this is the right breed for you is to familiarize yourself with the temperament, personality, and appearance of both parent breeds. They will be quietly loyal rather than constantly seeking affection. This is especially evident when they find an irresistible new scent trail to follow. They will simply switch off from everything else, put their nose to the ground, and track! With pack dog parents on the Basset Hound side of the family, these dogs want to be around people and other dogs. A Bassetoodle left alone for a long amount of time during the day will soon start to suffer from separation anxiety. This can lead to undesirable behaviors, including howling, barking, and chewing or clawing your furniture. Bassetoodles are intelligent and excellent problem solvers. Are These Dogs Good for Families? The smaller size and short legs of this breed make them great around kids or elderly family members. Make sure each animal has a space of their own to retreat to if they feel the need. A cross between a Basset Hound and a Poodle, the Bassetdoodle is a friendly pooch that loves its owners with all of its heart. These pups are incredibly affectionate and loyal. However, their curiosity may cause them to wander off, so they need to be watched carefully whenever they are out of doors. They are playful, and they love to have fun, making them a great addition to any loving home, especially one that is looking to add more life to an otherwise quiet household. The Bassetdoodle makes a wonderful family pet thanks to its friendly and loving nature and will get along with just about anyone, regardless of age or species. It is probable that they first arrived on the breeding scene in the late s since that is when Doodle popularity really took off and became all the rage. No breeder has come forth with the claim of bringing the Basset Hound and the Poodle together for the first time, and chances are this pup existed in nature through accidental mating long before any intentional efforts to bring the two pups began. Personality and Temperament The Bassetdoodle is a pup that is always full of love and bursting at the seams with joy. They make wonderful family pets thanks to their calm and gentle nature, which means they can easily be left open around children. However, it is always best to supervise when small children interact with animals since accidents may happen. These dogs are very eager-to-please, which makes them very easy to train. They are good watchdogs since they are quick to alert their owners about any suspicious behavior around them. While they are very sweet and gentle dogs, these pups may develop a stubborn streak. It is for this reason that early training and socialization are incredibly important to make sure your pup grows up to have a well-rounded personality. To get a good idea of the kind of temperament your Bassetdoodle will grow into, spend time around the parents. Their personalities are usually good indicators of the temperament the pup will grow up to have. Bassetoodle Size On average, the Bassetdoodle will grow up to be around 12 to 16 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 20 to 30 pounds. Bassetoodle Health Generally speaking, this is a healthy pup that does not suffer from many medical issues. Due to their mixed-breed nature, they usually have a certain level of hybrid vigor due to the increased gene pool. However, the best guarantee for a healthy dog is healthy parents. When getting your puppy from a breeder, be sure to get health clearances from both parents and be certain that the breeder you are getting your puppy from does not cross dogs that are younger than two years old, since that is when most genetic illnesses surface. It is a good practice to schedule regular visits to the vet so that any potential health issues can be caught and dealt with early. Some issues that your pup may be predisposed to include epilepsy, eye problems, hip dysplasia, ear infections, allergies, obesity, and bloat. The best way to get your pup to burn off any pent-up energy is to allow it to play outside. A walk in the dog park, a game of fetch, or just some aimless running around will do your Bassetdoodle a lot of good. Be sure that your pup is getting the physical and mental stimulation it needs. Otherwise, it may cross over into destructive territory, and that is something no owner wants. While they can sometimes be a little bit stubborn, on average, these dogs are very obedient and eager to please. In case they show stubborn behavior, use a lot of positive reinforcements and steer clear of any harsh punishments like yelling. Steer clear of free-feeding or giving your dog one big meal a day to prevent issues such as unnecessary weight gain and bloat. Coat Color, Types, Shedding Generally speaking, these dogs are rather low-shedding thanks to the Poodle genes. Their coats will grow to be medium in length and will be wiry and thick. Do not bathe your Bassetdoodle more than what is necessary since that may dry out their skin and cause irritation. Bassetoodle Breeders. They love to cuddle with their owners on the sofa but are always up for a walk or play session too, making them ideal dogs for families with small children. One thing to keep in mind is that these dogs are immensely curious pooches with powerful noses, and this trait can lead them to wander off with a single-minded focus when on the trail of an interesting scent. This has caused them to have a reputation for being somewhat stubborn, but with good training, these dogs are typically obedient and eager to please their owners. The Bassetoodle is a rare and fairly new breed, and there is not much information about this unique dog. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Bassetoodle Puppies A post shared by Johnny Chops johnnychopsrrb While Bassetoodles are sweet, eager-to-please animals, on the whole, they do have a stubborn streak that can make training a challenge for novice owners. However, with patience, dedication, and the right techniques, they can be successfully trained, and the result is definitely worth it! If you are away at work all day and your Bassetoodle will be at home alone, they are probably not the breed for you. They get along great with other dogs, though, and leaving them at home with a friend will help tremendously. Basset Hounds are known to be fairly laidback, calm dogs but are accustomed to chasing scents out in the field, and Poodles have also been used as working dogs for centuries. The combination of these two breeds makes for an easy-going pooch that is happy to relax but is also easily excitable and always up for a walk or play session. Bassetoodles are intelligent dogs that need a great deal of mental stimulation, and without it, they will quickly become bored and possibly destructive. They are not aggressive dogs but are known to be protective of their family and will howl at any suspicious noises or new faces. They can quickly suffer from separation anxiety if left alone, and this can lead to howling, digging, and destructive behavior. While the Bassetoodle is, on the whole, an affectionate and well-behaved pooch, they do have a stubborn and mischievous streak that can be an issue for novice dog owners. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are abundantly affectionate without being overly needy or overbearing. Their love for playing makes them great to have around children of any age, and they are overall gentle, sweet, and laidback dogs. That said, this howling can become problematic if left unchecked. With early socialization, the Bassetoodle generally gets on great with other pets. They are friendly animals that are rarely aggressive, and even your family cat will be a welcome friend! Their parent breeds do have a long history of working with hunters, although the instinct is more for tracking than hunting. Smaller pets like rabbits may be seen as prey, but it is easy to train your Bassetoodle to look the other way.

Best Dog Foods for Pugs Choosing the right dog food for a Pug is essential as this will ensure that it gets proper nutrition. However, this can be challenging and time-consuming, considering that there is a lot to choose from. Whether you choose to feed your Pug commercial, homemade food, or raw food, make sure that they are of good quality and recommended by a trusted veterinarian. Proper nutrition is one of the factors that affect their lifespan. Below is a list of the best dog food choices for your Pug: Dry Food: One of the best options for Pugs is dry dog food as it is widely available, cheap, and has a long shelf life. These are packed with all the nutrients essential for your Pug. Wet Food: Wet dog food is another good option for Pugs. Its flavor and texture make it more appealing to Pugs than dry food. Wet food contains fewer grains, making it healthier and easier to digest. However, wet canned food has a shorter shelf life and should be consumed immediately after opening. Wet foods are also more expensive than dry foods. Homemade Food: Your Pug may benefit from cooked food consisting of chicken, eggs, fish, rice, and vegetables. The process is time-consuming, but it is less expensive and more convenient in the long run, especially if you plan on giving them a grain-free diet. Raw Food: Raw food diet for most Pugs results in better digestion, healthy skin, and a stronger immune system in Pugs. Mixing any of the aforementioned food choices is also good. Hence, you may want to try dog food alternatives to fit your budget. With their sensitive little stomachs, some foods can be poisonous, cause allergic reactions, and can even be lethal. Below is a list of food that you should completely avoid feeding to your Pug: Alcohol: Any amount of alcohol is hazardous for Pugs. Pugs do not have the enzyme to metabolize alcohol. Ingestion can cause hypoglycemia , metabolic acidosis , breathing problems, and central nervous system CNS impairment. Avocado: Avocado contains persin , a fungicidal toxin that has been linked to the death of many animals, including Pugs. It can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and heart damage in large quantities. As a result, even small amounts of chocolate can cause poisoning. Grapes and raisins: Grapes and raisins contain tartaric acid , which causes vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and kidney failure among Pugs. Unfortunately, even one whole grape can cause irreversible damage and death in small breeds like Pugs. Macadamia nuts and walnuts: While the exact reason why they are poisonous is unknown, it is best to avoid giving them to your Pugs entirely. In Pugs, macadamia and walnuts can cause diarrhea, weakness, breathing problems, and pancreatitis. Onion, garlic, leeks, and chives: All these vegetables contain N-propyl disulfide , which damages the oxygen-carrying substances in red blood cells. Ingestion of these vegetables can eventually lead to hemolytic anemia. Xylitol: In Pugs, xylitol can cause a rapid release of insulin, resulting in hypoglycemia, lethargy, collapse, and seizures. It is frequently found in gums, candies, syrups, and toothpaste. Pugs should avoid the foods listed above at all costs. Food with high sugar content: If your Pug consumes too much sugar, it is more likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay. Food with high sugar content can also give Pugs an upset stomach. Salty food: Just like sugar, too much salt can cause health problems in Pugs. If left unchecked, it has the potential to poison your Pug. Excessive salt consumption can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and kidney failure. Milk and dairy products: Because the majority of Pugs are lactose intolerant , dairy products can make them sick. They will have digestive problems because they are unable to break down lactose. This causes gastrointestinal blockage and death if left unattended. If you think your Pug has accidentally ingested any of the aforementioned foods, bring your dog to the nearest veterinary clinic for appropriate treatment. Transitioning to a new brand or type of food may be beneficial to their well-being and development. For most dogs, transitioning to new dog food can be difficult. Fortunately, Pugs are not born picky eaters, so changing their diet will be easier. The ideal transition for Pugs should be gradual changes spread over three weeks. Do this until they are comfortable with the new food. Below is a more detailed breakdown of how to transition your Pug to a new food: Days. You may find yourself on the dog food isle trying to make sense of all the ingredients, types of foods and categories. And all you want to know is… How often and what should I feed my Pug? Every dog is different, every type of food has its specific quantities and it even varies between brands. Start simple and figure out all the details and methods. I have collected information about the different types, brands pros and cons of dog feeding to try and give an unbiased as much as I can look, so you can make a better-informed choice which will be right for you and your Pug. Remember, people care deeply about their dogs and will often get very emotional about the health and feeding they chose. Having been the owner of a pet store, I have learned that although I have my personal preferences and very good reasons for them, others may have different choices and they believe they are the right ones for them. There are a lot of issues to consider. How Many times a day should I feed My Pug? A mature Pug can easily live a healthy life with one meal which provides all his nutritional needs. In most cases, it is more convenient for both us and the pug to split this to two meals. If your Pug had a full meal in the morning, be sure he will nag you like crazy in the afternoon. Puppies have smaller stomachs and need, relative to their size, a larger quantity of food so it is better to break it up to three or even four meals a day. If you are around your Pug all day and prefer to give 4 meals a day to a mature dog, there is no harm in it, as long as the overall daily quantity stays the same. Free Buffet or Set meals? Pugs are notorious for becoming overweight and need to be limited to a set amount. If your Pug is not typical in that sense, you are welcome to put the full daily portion in the bowl and see how long it lasts. One more reason for set meals is monitoring. You want to know how much you Pug eats. If you want your Pug to lose weight, you need to know how much he is eating in order to cut down. On the flip side, if your Pug is not eating the usual amounts it may be an indication of a medical condition. What food do Pugs Eat? Pugs love food. They love treats, dry food, wet food, table scraps, raw meat, cooked meat, spicy meat and meat gone bad. In rural areas and farms, they may have also got more meaty scraps. Our Pugs who grew up with Emperors and Royalty were probably treated to high quality scraps. Today, dry bagged kibble or canned wet food are the standard for most homes, although there is a growing number of people and companies promoting more natural diets of either raw or cooked food for dogs. Every type of food claims to be the healthiest, more appropriate, tailored and nutritional. Kibble Kibble is the most common dog food available and has become the staple for the average dog. Pros of Kibble The makers of dry food claim it has the most balanced and scientifically based formulas to provide the best nutrition for a dog. They also tailor these formulas to dogs of different size, breed, age or other needs. Even the most discerning dog owners should be able a composition to satisfy them. The ingredient list is unclear and misleading. There are numerous food recalls yearly. There are websites dedicated just to keep up with the recalls. Teeth are going to need cleaning. Wet canned food Aside from the meatier texture and the higher water content, there is little difference between kibble and the canned, wet counterpart. The ingredients can be similar and so are the health benefits. Some dog owners report that wet food makes for softer stools when fed exclusively. Many dog owners will give a combination of wet and dry food. Home cooked As with human food there is a growing number of people fed up Pun intended with commercial and over engineered food. Raw food Also called the BARF Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods , the idea behind it is that the dogs digestive system has not evolved as their behavior, and much like wild dogs or wolves, they should eat the equivalent to small animals they would pray on in nature. Since dogs are also scavengers this diet will include some vegetables, berries etc. The pros As with the home-cooked diet, you have total control of ingredients and quality No preservatives, additives, fillers etc. You need to learn how to make, takes time Ingredients like bones and internal organs may not be available in your area. Can be pricy. Even More expensive if buying ready and frozen. Takes freezer space Raw Disclaimer I am a little bias towards raw food. I used to own a pet food store specializing in raw food for cats and dogs and I have been feeding my own Pugs raw food for over twelve years. Obviously, I am very happy with the raw diet and its outcomes as switching to dry food would have been easy and cheap. I believe it is the better choice for myself and my dogs. I believe I have presented the facts fairly objectively as far as the other feeding options go. There is no standard or way to measure what natural is and what the added value of it is other then the origin of it. Natural color could come from some secretion of an insect. Special Needs Puppies These little ones need the most nutritious and high-quality food you can find. If you want to find an economic way to feed your dog, please do it later in his life. Allergies Pugs are relatively sensitive to allergies. In some cases, this is due to an external source such as home detergents, but more often than not it has to do with their diet. There are a few brands that you can try with low, or no grain. If you are feeding your pug home cooked food or a raw diet, taking the carbs and grain out would be easy. Our Pugs were and are on a raw diet from day one and we never had any issues with allergies, except for one time. We started noticing that Preston had pinkish skin around his paws and around the nose fold. Since we owned a pet food store specializing in raw food, at the time convenient, I know we tried different types of meats, but nothing helped. It took us some time to realize the cause. We had our baby daughter at the time, and since she was very close and intimate with Preston, and he was eating raw, we made sure to wipe his mouth and feet with baby wipes after every meal. The baby wipes were the culprits. We switched them both to hypo-allergenic wipes and the skin went back to normal… Hip Dysplasia Pugs are ranked as one of the breeds with the highest chances of suffering from Hip Dysplasia. This can lead to trouble in walking and running and arthritis may follow as well. If your Pug is suffering from Hip Dysplasia to any extent you may want to either supplement their diet with Chondroitin and Glucosamine or to choose a brand that is made for joint support. Vets and nutrition. Having said that, if I needed nutritional advice, I would go to a nutritionist and not to my Doctor. The nutrition training vets get in many schools is provided by agents of the commercial food companies who are bias at best. Skipping meals Dogs will sometimes skip a meal. It is natural for them as food is not something that was always available on daily base. It is not typical for Pugs but it may happen. If it happens it will probably be a one meal deal. If your Pug misses a few meals in a row you may want to consult a vet. Treats and snacks I try and think of treats and snacks the same way I think of candy for my daughters. If the amount of treats your Pug is rivals the actual food, in quantity, you should reconsider or at least re calculate it. If you are using kibble both at meals and as treats for training, and your stubborn Pug ends up consuming a lot of treats, just take it off the next meal. The same goes for snacks. They should be a part of the total daily feeding and not extra. How long can a pug go without eating? An adult Pug can probably survive many days without food, but no Pug would stand for it. Unless your Pug has a medical condition, he will surely let you know he is hungry. Do make sure that your Pug is not deprived of fresh drinking water at all times. Aug 25, Share An important part of taking good care of your Pug puppy is making sure that they are properly fed and that they get all the nutrients that they need to grow strong and healthy. Puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs, and if your Pug is like most, they seem to like anything that they are fed. Luckily, there are many commercial foods available on the market. There is also the raw doggy food diet that seems to keep getting more popular as time goes on. But what kind of dog food is right for your Pug? How much should you be feeding them? What will the dog not eat? Are there special considerations for a senior Pug? The answers to these questions and more can be found in our Pug feeding guide below. What you do decide to feed your pooch should be based on the quality of the food, no matter the type, and your personal feeding preferences. Here is what can be on the table for your Pug. Image credit: PxHere Commercial Dry Food Kibble Commonly referred to as kibble, commercial dry dog food is the most common and widely available option on the market. Manufacturers of this type of food work hard to balance the ingredients and create a completely balanced nutritional profile for dogs like your Pug. In fact, some brands, like Royal Canin, offer puppy and adult foods made just for Pugs. Whether you choose a dry dog food made just for Pugs or one made for dogs in general, it should include real meat or animal meal as one of the first ingredients on the list. The upside to commercial dry dog food is that it is affordable and easy to administer. It is also typically easy to store for the long term without worrying about it spoiling. The downside is that it tends to be dehydrating, so water should be available to your Pug throughout the day. Commercial Wet Food Commercially made wet dog food tends to be more nutrient-dense than dry food because it contains fresher ingredients and usually has fewer grains, if any at all. Most wet foods have real whole meat or seafood and broth as the first ingredients. Sometimes, veggies are thrown in for good measure, but many are meat-centric to meet the high protein needs of your growing Pug. Wet food is not as easy to store as dry food is, because it must be refrigerated after being opened. However, Pugs tend to enjoy the flavor and texture of wet food more than dry. Wet food is also a little more expensive than dry food, especially when trying to feed Pugs that are full-grown and in their prime. Raw Food A raw food diet is said to result in better digestion, a healthier coat and immune system , optimal dental health, and less susceptibility to allergies among other things. A raw food diet typically consists of quality meat, a source of calcium such as bones , animal organs, and a lower fat count than most commercial foods offer. Feeding your Pug a raw food diet will take commitment and a strong understanding of the nutrition that they need. This type of diet can be expensive and can require storage space in the fridge and freezer. It is recommended that you consult with a veterinarian to put together a complete meal plan to follow if you choose to go this route. It is a freeze-dried raw food supplement that is delicious and nutritious. The process requires about a day of cooking in the kitchen, but the time that you spend in your kitchen should yield enough food for your pooch to eat all week long. You will just have to store the leftovers in the fridge each day until the entire batch has been offered and consumed. Homemade dog food usually consists of whole meat like chicken, eggs, fish oil or flaxseed, brown or white rice, possibly vegetables like carrots and peas , and maybe even supplements of some kind. It depends on what kind of recipe you decide to follow. Any recipe that you consider feeding your dog should be approved by your veterinarian first. But you can quickly tell whether your pooch is being underfed or overfed by checking out their physique every day. If your dog is underfed for too long, you could notice signs like lethargy and an unwillingness to interact with family members. If your dog is overfed, they may succumb to problems like diabetes. If you find that your dog is getting underweight, start feeding them up to an extra cup of food each day. Reduce the amount by up to a cup if your dog is getting pudgy and out of shape. To help avoid under and overfeeding your dog, follow the feeding directions on the packaging of any commercial food you buy for them. If you decide to go the raw or homemade food route, your veterinarian can provide you with a feeding guide. You are free to use this image, but please give credit back to Hepper. Extra immune support is also typically present in puppy food. Once Pugs become adults, they are not as active as when they were pups, and they are not growing at exponential rates, if at all. Therefore, they need food with less protein than what puppies get. Pugs can typically switch to adult dog food between the ages of 9 and 12 months because much of their growth will be complete at this time. The tricky part is the actual process of switching your pooch from puppy to adult dog food. If not done slowly and intentionally, switching to a new food can cause digestion issues for your dog that could create messes around the house. Lethargy and nausea may follow. Finally, offer only adult food. There are many reasons why your Pug might seem like they do not have an appetite. The first thing to consider is whether you are overfeeding them. If your pooch does not want to eat their last meal of the day, they could simply be full and satisfied. However, other issues could lead to a pup not eating such as: Dental Problems. If your Pug has a toothache or some other kind of dental problem, they may not be comfortable eating. Check for red gums, bleeding, and tenderness throughout the mouth. If something unusual is detected, consult your veterinarian immediately for guidance. Recent Vaccinations. Vaccines can cause side effects, including a lack of appetite. So, if your Pug does not seem to want to eat for a day or two after getting vaccinated, this is normal. Uncomfortable Surroundings. If your pooch goes on an adventure with you and is expected to eat their meal in a situation that is not familiar to them, they may pass on the meal altogether in favor of waiting until they get to what they feel is a safe space to eat. Even if your dog seems fine in every other way, a lack of wanting to eat could mean an illness of some kind is brewing. If you cannot find any other reason for a lack of appetite, you should see your vet as soon as possible. Adult Pugs will generally eat about a cup of dry commercial dog food each day or the equivalent, although certain differences might scale this amount up or down as time goes on. Here are the most important factors to consider. Active vs. Sedentary More active dogs will require more food than those that tend to be sedentary. If your pooch takes multiple walks every day, spends a great deal of time playing with kids throughout the day, or enjoys outdoor time with family members each afternoon, chances are that your dog will need a little more food than the average pooch. If your pooch takes only one short walk each day and spends most of their time lounging around the house, chances are that they should be fed as sedentary dogs. Spayed vs. Neutered Sometimes, dogs that are not spayed or neutered eat more than the average pooch. This is because they tend to be more active and excitable, which results in the need for more calories to support their energy needs. Pregnancy Pregnant Pugs need up to twice the amount of food that an adult dog would need. Instead of feeding your pregnant dog puppy or adult food, consider a food designed for all life stages that indicates its suitability for pregnancy. This type of food offers more protein and fat than adult food to support the extra growth they go through, but not as much as puppy food, which could make them overweight after the birth. Almost every time, this happens by the age of 3 weeks; and puppies should not leave their mother until at least 8 weeks of age. Instead you can weigh yourself if you have accurate scales, and then get someone to pass you your Pug puppy to see what the difference is. The age of your Pug You might find it hard to get your Pug used to commercial dry food at first. The commercial puppy food should be high enough in calories and nutrients to make up for what they used to get from their mother. In terms of adjusting for their ages, Pug puppies of 8 to 12 weeks old can have one and half cups of food each day, split into 3 servings. By the ages of 6 to 9 months, Pug puppies will be in a regular eating routine where they drop to two meals a day — and this is how it will stay as adults. The dangers of over-feeding Some Pug owners might decide to go to 4 meals a day, but still with the same amount of food. This is because tinier Pugs might find the half a cup 3 times daily, too much of a large meal. Overfeeding is something to keep a strict eye on. If you feed your Pug puppy too much, he could get gastric dilatation-volvulus see definition on ACVS. This is the medical term for a twisted gut and can actually be fatal. Feeding more senior Pugs As Pugs get older, they will start to get less active. With reduced levels of energy comes the need for a lower calorie intake. But only if they are reducing their exercise due to age. With an older Pug you might start to see them putting on weight. If you do see weight gain, start to pull back on the portion sizes. Sometimes your vet may even recommend you go to a higher frequency of daily meals albeit smaller portions , almost like they are puppies again. With senior dogs this can help with weaker stomachs. Overweight or underweight? The average Pug puppy will weigh between 2 and 4 pounds at 8 weeks. These are healthy weight ranges. If you do have a Pug puppy who is clearly underweight, start to add a little bit more food to each of the daily meals until they come back into the health weight range. With overweight Pugs you do the exact opposite but mix more exercise into their daily routines as well. Handy Hint: If your Pug is losing or gaining weight and how much food they eat makes no difference, it could be a sign of an underlying health issue. Raw food vs. I understand why people feed their dog raw food though; they say commercial food has too many additives plus preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and proteins. Consult with your vet for a professional opinion. Pugs that eat their food far too quickly You should also monitor how quickly your Pug is eating. Puppies are used to having to compete for food, and even when they are home alone with you, they will still have an instinct to wolf their food down. This can cause indigestion and vomiting, so there are a few things you can do to slow their intake down. Use a muffin tin evenly spread the portions throughout the tin. The best dry dog foods should have a high percentage of meats and fish in. Omega-3s are healthy fats, so those will also be a good sign if listed. Kibble, cans and specialty foods Proper Nutrition Since puppies need energy to grow big and strong, their food is higher in calories and packed with more nutrients. This includes more fat, protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. So always choose a food that is labelled for puppies. Since a Pug is a small toy breed , they will grow very quickly and reach adulthood much faster than larger breeds. Toy dog breeds actually need more calories per pound than larger breeds due to their higher metabolic rates. The structure of their flat muzzle and facial folds , while appealing to look at, unfortunately causes a number of serious health problems. This causes soft tissue to block the airways, making breathing very difficult. Their jaws and teeth can also cause them problems. Remember, slimmer is better. How Often To Feed Your Pug Puppy I always recommend feeding puppies small meals at scheduled times several hours apart, and then decreasing the frequency as they get older. For puppies under six months go with something like 7am, 12noon, 3pm then 6pm. As they grow you can reduce this routine to three or even two times a day, but there is no harm continuing with multiple feedings as long as you dividing their daily rations evenly. Kibble vs Canned Food Dried puppy kibble is affordable, easy to store and transport, and readily available. Serving is as simple as opening the package and pouring it into the bowl. Specialty Pug Puppy Foods The introduction of breed-specific formulas to the market has made it even more confusing. However, there are some Pug puppy formulations that address some of their health issues that might be worth considering. Some kibble is designed in a shape and texture that makes it easier for short-nosed puppies to pick up and chew easily. But the sad part of the story is that just like any other dog, pugs get obese very quickly. As they say, you become what you eat. Since the pug is a tiny dog, even one extra pound will affect its appearance. For this reason, it becomes important to keep a check on what your pug is eating. The present article talks about the feeding guidelines of this adorable dog: How much is too much? It is very important to feed your dog the correct amount of food to ensure that the pug is getting enough calories for proper growth. Any deviation from the right amount will led to health problems in a pug. Age, activity, metabolism and build of a dog are the major factors on which the amount of food which should be given to a dog depends. Also, the type of food you are giving to a dog is another important factor. If you are feeding home cooked food to one pug and commercial dog food to another dog with same age, build and activity level, it is not necessary that both of them will consume the same amount. As a general rule of thumb, a puppy pug should be given 1 ounce of food per one pound of body weight. For adult pugs, the amount is halved. What about calories? A pug puppy which is in his growth phase requires more calories than adult and senior pugs. On an average, a puppy requires 50 calories per pound of their body weight while an adult pug requires 40 calories per pound of their body weight. Senior pugs need fewer calories because of slow metabolism and less activity level. Free feeding is not recommended to the pug. The following table illustrates the right feeding regime and meal frequency for pugs: Age Amount of food given at one time No.
