I knew I was entering into a world of untold beauty, a world of wet, lush landscapes and rolling green mountains — a world of natural life so rich and vibrant that my eyes would blink back tears of overwhelming disbelief. But also — I was entering into a world of heartache, and sometimes, even heartbreak. I went to Costa Rica with one mission: to educate myself, first hand, about the situation of homeless and abandoned dogs outside of America — one of my greatest passions and certainly, one of the single most important reasons why I wake up everyday. My intention was to meet and photograph as many dogs as I could possibly find — all while learning each individual personality, and reading the storybooks in their eyes as every pup took a turn telling me their own unique tale. Stepping off that plane, I could feel my heart beating so fast behind the hold of my chest. All at once I was both bursting with joy and scared to death of the unknown journey I had ahead of me. As soon as we landed in San Jose — we hopped in a rental car and headed to our lodging in the absolutely beautiful little town of Atenas, Costa Rica. Just a few miles into our first drive on Costa Rican soil, I saw my first stray. I remember him clearly. A little black dog — a lab mix maybe — who appeared to be just a young puppy — trotting down a side street all by himself on a relatively busy road weaving in and out of fences. My heart basically jumped out of my chest — a sting of panic ran up my spine — and of course, the first instinct I had was to pull over and try to save him. After that first street dog, we passed many, many more. And as I sat in the backseat with my face pressed against warm glass, peering out into the world moving all around me — I knew there was a lot that I was going to have to learn. And I was going to have to try and brace myself for the impact of what I was about to experience. Lighthouse Animal Rescue I was lucky enough to be able to make arrangements for our second day in Costa Rica to be spent at a well-known rescue facility located high atop a mountain in Atenas. Upon arrival, Frances was touched by the situation in Costa Rica — and knew that she had to do something to help. Frances and her family were so warm and welcoming to us, that I had a bit of a hard time holding back tears. Immediately upon pulling into the front driveway, we were greeted by a one-eyed cat and a happy, bouncing goat. I said hello to them from my rolled down window before even getting out of the car. I had a feeling that within the next few hours of my experience there at Lighthouse Rescue — that I might explode from happiness. We entered the facility to more silly, wagging fuzzy faces than I knew what to do with. For me, this was basically heaven. I stood there taking it all in. Mountains and valleys. Rivers and an ocean. A sky that seemed to go on forever — swirling with color and warmth. And shades of endless green that I never even knew existed. I couldnt quite believe that it was all real. We spent the afternoon and into the evening at Lighthouse Rescue, touring the facility and meeting and photographing the dogs. We heard each of their stories, gave lots of puppy kisses, clicked until our shutters started to ache, and did a fair amount of playing and throwing for fetch. I left there with a heart so full I thought it could burst. My mission, growing and changing with each rescuer I met. This sweet adoptable girl is Sprinkles. Sprinkles was dumped in downtown Atenas when she was just a small puppy. There were abundant wags and smiles for my lens every which way that I turned! Fuzzy, waggly butts every which way you would look! And here she is, the face of Lighthouse Rescue — an earth angel, and a hero in my eyes: Frances Jones. I cant describe how amazing and strong this woman is. Her passion on the inside just made her sparkle on the outside. I was attracted to that strength and spirit like a magnet. Those dogs love her so much. Their eyes would gleam and their tails would whip wildly — back and forth, back and forth, each time she was near. To have earned the love of a dog is, in my opinion, one of the most telling characteristics of a pure and beautiful soul. Frances gave me a tour of her office and a sign taped up on the cabinet caught my eye. This perfectly sums up the battle she fights everyday. Frances was so lovely to allow me to pose for a shot with some of the sweet wiggly dogs at the rescue, to commemorate my time atop of that perfect mountain in Atenas. And it was at just about this time that reality set in and I might have freaked out…. .Then we packed up all of our gear and headed back down the mountain, towards those orange glowing lights that would guide us home. Street Dogs For the next few days, our purpose was to observe and to learn — to immerse ourselves in the untold beauty of Costa Rica, and also to understand the real-world homeless dog situation a little better. Our goal was to find and to document the dogs on the streets, but not to interfere. The strays, the zaguates free-roaming community dogs cared for by the neighborhood at large , and even the few, well-cared for personal pets were all subjects of interest to us — as we were studying and learning a culture that we were thirsty to know more about. These are the faces of the street dogs of Costa Rica, encountered on our adventures through anywhere from busy towns to quiet, rural villages. I spotted this sweet, sweet face from the car as we passed by a bar on a busy street. He was crossing the road in a quiet, tired sort of way and as I watched, I felt my heart physically shattering inside of my body. He was not afraid to come and say hello to us. And for this, I was wildly grateful. We wanted to meet him — to brush the dirt from his face and to translate the energy of what its really like to feel a bit of love and kindness. If even just for a moment. When I got close to this sweet boy, I noticed something remarkable. His body was thin, beaten down and worn from the years of a life of abandonment. His mangy, unkempt fur was falling out in small chunks, and his body was riddled with ticks and parasites. There must have been two, maybe three hundred ticks covering this sick and tired boy. But despite it all — despite all of that physical devastation and sadness that this dog must carry everyday — there was a sparkle in his eye. I looked at him and I was blown away. There was something there. A soul. A soul that I could see. A glimpse into the heart of this brave little dog. I looked into those big, wet eyes and I got lost in there — I fell in love over and over and over again. To me, this dog became the face of my mission. The face of my purpose there in Costa Rica. To bring to light the struggle of millions of abandoned animals all around the world. He was the face of the forgotten. He was the face of the ones who have been left behind. I thank my lucky stars every day that our paths crossed — because this dog, single handedly made my mission and my purpose in this life clear. I am here to find the ones like him — to tell their stories. To give a voice to the voiceless. As he scampered away from me, into the brush behind the broken down bar — I felt a stinging in my throat, knowing Id likely never see him again, and knowing that those eyes just changed my whole world forever. And it seemed perfect to describe how I feel about this dog. The everydog. The one who represents all of the rest. The weathered. The worn. The abandoned and lonely. Those are the dogs that keep me awake at night. Sunset came just as he scampered away from me forever. It was about a 2 hours drive from where we were staying in Atenas. Our drive from Atenas to San Ramon de Alajuela was nothing short of an epic adventure. We wound up and down mountain roads, passed over bridges and by gushing waterfalls and adventured through cloud forests. Our little Toyota Yaris rental car buzzed and hummed and clunked across the terrain — my disbelief that we were actually making it across the unrelenting landscape growing with every mile. Once we arrived in the village that Dogland was supposed to be located in — we realized we were lost. We didnt know which way to go and our barely functional GPS put us at the top of a very steep hill that was made of mostly small boulders and dirt. As a side note, there are no physical addresses in Costa Rica. Only general directions, villages and landmarks to go by to find a spot on the map. Unbelievably, that little Yaris soldiered on — and we found ourselves by a small construction site dappled with a few Ticos friendly slang for a native Costa Ricans who smiled and waved at us. We asked the workers if someone might be able to give directions to the center of town — and with a warm, happy smile — one of the men hopped on his moped and motioned for us to follow him. We followed the sound of his whirring little motor, down and around windy mountain roads. But just a few moments later — we found a kind old man walking along the street and we did just that. I giggled at the storybook-ness of it all. He knew exactly where we wanted to go. Once being pointed up the mountain — we drove ahead. After just a few miles, we all saw it at once — Dogland!! She greeted us with such warmth — a big smile and hugs for everyone. I knew immediately that we were in the right place. We were in my paradise. Dogs everywhere. Big dogs. Little dogs. Fat dogs. Happy dogs. Wagging dogs. Playing dogs. Running dogs. Over of them, all in big beautiful enclosures with endless amounts of room for running and exercise. I was beside myself. Looking around at this facility — I couldnt believe that it was run by this one woman. This one miracle woman who put everything else in her life aside to save these dogs. She feeds, bathes, loves and cares for over homeless dogs that wait so patiently for their new families to one day come and find them. At once, Helene began to show us around the property on an excited tour! This was quite an emotional journey for me — as, again — I felt my heart so full that I could barely breathe. I was incredibly whole and both so broken at the very same time. I looked around me and saw so many beautiful hearts — so many beautiful souls waiting for families that might never come, and I was in such pain for them. But at the same time, I saw so much love. The love of one woman and her devoted employees and volunteers — a tiny group of people who had come together to be the heroes in the lives of the innocent. I cant begin to tell you how beautiful the dogs at Dogland were. Big, warm, eyes and happy, wagging smiles. I think lots of times, people have a misconception that these shelter dogs are broken. I cant tell you how wrong that is. These dogs have a spirit like no other — a sense of gratitude and joy that I have a hard time putting into words. At this point — Helene gave me the incredible privilege of choosing as many dogs as I wanted to meet one on one and photograph: I was lucky enough to get a good cuddle in with this sweet, sweet old girl. Her grey face had my heart in a puddle. Eyes like these ones stay with me forever. Helene let me name him! A brand new little Miniature Pinscher puppy with his Mom watching from close behind. Helene is the heart and soul behind Dogland. A woman who made the journey across oceans from a very successful life that she built for herself in native Austria, to make a new one in Costa Rica — and to selflessly devote that life, and everything she ever worked for, to the innocent and abandoned. She speaks three languages and has a heart made of pure gold. Her spirit, energy and joy is infectious — and the love that she has for those less fortunate than her is a gift of a magnitude that humbled me beyond words. Her laugh is big, bold and completely contagious. Women like Helene and Frances are pure inspiration to me. These are my idols. They are the champions of animal rescue — unbreakable souls that fight endlessly for a cause they believe in. Their passion inspires me to be a better person — to always fight for a better tomorrow. Early training and socialization are key to having a well-behaved and obedient American Bulldog companion at home. What coat color they have upon birth will still be the same coat color and pattern until they are fully grown. I tried out his food, and I take the bottled water by Cesar Millan to the dog park so they don't drink the communal water. I always use his techniques, and I train myself before the dog!! The ai artificial insemination itself is simple and rather fast, no longer than thirty minutes from start to finish. How its done: Semen is collected into a bag and drawn up into a syringe with some air to help push the semen through the pipette. The syringe is attached to a pipette that is then inserted into the female. The female then stays elevated and stimulated for minutes and will be refrained from urinating for at least thirty minutes. General Appearance and Temperament The Australian Labradoodle moves with agility and grace when active yet is compact with substance and medium boning. Brimming with joy and energy when free, they become relaxed and quiet when handled. Australian Labradoodles have a free flowing wavy or curly coat that is low to non-shedding. The multi-generational Australian Labradoodle comes in three basic sizes. There should be no appreciable difference in the general appearance of the Standard, Medium, or Miniature sizes except in the actual size difference. Medium 17 to 20 inches tall and weighs between 31 and 45 pounds as an adult. Standard 21 to 24 inches tall and weighs between 46 and 65 pounds as an adult. Coat One of the benefits of buying a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle is that you will know with a high degree of certainty what the coat type will be when your puppy becomes an adult. Australian Labradoodles have a single coat ranging from straight to loose curls or wool. Ideally, the curls should not be tight and the coat should not be too thick or fluffy. They can be allergy friendly to many people who have dog related allergies. The coat is as non-shedding as any dog can be. However, in some of the early generations, F1, F2 and F1b, more shedding can occur, but shedding is rarely seen in the multi generation Labradoodle. The coat types are as follows: Fleece The Fleece coat texture should be light and silky, often described as feeling like Angora. The fleece coat can be from loosely waved giving an almost straight appearance to deeply waved with soft curls. The fleece coat has been found to be allergy friendly and is low to non-shedding. Wool The wool coat is denser to the feel like a sheep's wool. It is extremely rare for a wool coat to shed, and is the preferred coat type for families with severe allergies. The Australian Labradoodle has a single coat. Both the Fleece and the Wool coat should be of a soft texture. Color The multi-generational Australian Labradoodle comes in a variety of many beautiful colors and patterns. Lighting can change the colors, with summer sun often causing the outer coat to highlight in lighter shades. Silvering or graying may give the coat a distinctive look. Coats often have a slight to dramatic amount of softening of color over the years. Each combination is beautiful in its unique expression. See examples of each color below. Black Pigment Colors: All dogs in this category have dark brown eyes, black noses, gums and paw pads. The descriptions may range in name from black, blue, or silver to cream, apricot, gold or red. Chocolate Pigment Colors: All dogs in this category have brown noses and lighter, usually hazel, eyes and brown paw pads. Chocolate and caramel are the two basic colors in this category. Intensity of the hue in chocolate and caramel can range from a dark to light. Puppies coats may start out darker in tone, then soften in time with hues of cream. Color names for chocolate range from cafe, milk chocolate, and latte to lavender and parchment. The caramel coloration ranges from light to a dark rich shading of the yellow gene. Temperament and Soundness are the two KEY elements in a good family companion; they must not be sacrificed for any reason. Accurate prediction of size, even by an experienced breeder, is not expected at this time. Size is measured to the top of the shoulder blades withers while standing squarely on a level surface. Much care is needed when breeding both the large and small dogs. Large dogs can suffer from rapid growth that can lead to structural problems. Soundness is of utmost importance. Over size is a major fault. Care must be taken to keep the miniature Australian Labradoodle a solid athletic robust dog. The dwarfing of dogs can lead to many genetic and temperament disorders. Minimum size attention is of the utmost importance to maintain a healthy little dog. Most Australian Labradoodles will weigh more than their height reflects. Weight range tends to be 50 to 65 pounds. Weight range tends to be 30 to 40 pounds. Weight range tends to be 16 to 25 pounds. Body: Height to wither to length from sternum to point of buttock should appear square and compact. Shoulders should have good angulation with firm elbows held close to the rib cage. Hindquarters should be of medium angulation with short strong hocks. Ribs should be well sprung but not barreled. Overall, the dog should appear square, be balanced, athletic and with good muscling. When happy, relaxed or at play will prance and skim the ground lightly. Excessive tightness in the hips will produce a stilted action and is considered a fault. Tail: Set relatively high and preferred to be carried in a saber, can be carried below the topline or "gaily" above. Curled possum type tails are undesirable. Head: Sculptured, broad, well defined eyebrows, medium stop, eyes set well apart, nose to stop slightly longer than stop to occiput. Foreface shorter than skull. The head should be clean and chiseled and fully coated as on the body, legs and tail. The Muzzle is measured from the tip of the nose to the stop. The skull is measured from the occiput to the stop and does not include the muzzle. Ears: Set moderately flat against the head, base should be level with the eye. Leather should be of medium thickness and when gently drawn forward should reach the top canine tooth. Ear leather reaching beyond the tip of nose is considered a severe fault. Ear canals should be free of excessive hair, and not thick and bulbous. When inquisitive and alert the ear set should rise to the top of the head. Eyes: "Slightly" round, large and expressive, always offering eye to eye contact when engaged in activity with a human. Protruding or sunken eyes are a fault. Watery or tearful eyes are a fault. Wide round or narrow almond shaped eyes are considered a fault. Eye Color: Eye color should complement and blend with the face color. Caramel and dogs with rose pigment may have either dark eyes or "ghost" eyes. Ghost is a hazel color range much the same as it is in humans. Ghost eyes must always remain soft in appearance. Cold staring expressionless appearance in all eye colors is a severe fault. Teeth: Scissor bite only is acceptable, being neither undershot nor overshot. Miniatures must not have crowding teeth. Nose: Large square and fleshy. Pigment: Black or Rose. Pigment should be strong. Black pigment dogs must have dark brown eyes. Pink spots or patches on nose, lips, eye rims or pads are a fault. Dogs with rose pigment can have dark hazel, brown or ghost eyes. Eye rims should be rose as should nose, lips and pads. Pink spots or patches are a severe fault. Rose should be a rich liver color. Neck: The firm, well muscled neck should be moderately long, slightly arched and flow into the well angled shoulders with no appearance of abruptness. The neck should not be coarse nor stumpy and should lend an air of elegance to the dog. A short thick neck is a fault. Color: Any solid color including Cafe' and Silver is preferred. Minimal white on the chest and toes is acceptable. Light chalky coarse hairs kemp sprinkled through a dark coat is permissible but very undesirable. Parti patched and Phantoms, are considered an acceptable color. Phantoms are any shading or two tone coloration such as a Black dog with lower legs showing a soft toning of silver or gold or a dog born dark with a golden shading at the roots or a slight brindling effect. True pure solid colors with the exception of Silver and Cafe' are highly prized and are the ideal for the Australian Labradoodle. It is normal that all colors may show bleaching and discoloration over the top coat. This is called sunning and is quite expected and acceptable, as the Australian Labradoodle is an active dog and often a service dog that enjoys the outdoors.
