Lady This sweet momma came to our rescue with her two babies as a part of a neglect case. Lady enjoys her foster siblings but doesnt need to be with them. She doesnt mind her foster cat siblings and has been around kids! She loves to be where her foster mom is at all times! Lady is still a little timid when doing new things or going to new places. We are still working on going up and down the inside stairs to bed and kennel. She is 4 years old and is potty trained! Does Lady sound like she could be a part of your family?! This girl is an angel! She seems to be potty trained and is very well behaved! She likes to have her people near her but also likes to be in her own space where she feels comfortable. Her favorite is butt scratches and she will ask for belly rubs!! She knows sit, shake, down. Before throwing the ball, she has to sit. She gets so excited. She loves playing in water and will jump up to catch any water splashed at her. This girl is amazing on a leash too, she gets a little excited to smell every once in a while but once you pull the leash, she takes the correction and is back to your side. She is cat friendly as she avoids them at all costs. Could this girl be the right fit for you? She is ready for her furever family at anytime! Adult, Female, Large Lola Name: Lola Occupation: Showgirl Likes: Food, everything, everyone, puppy toys Dislikes: Being lonely, computer printers, world hunger This gorgeous beauty queen hails from the mystical small town of Fairfield, Iowa, where she was temporarily loved by the good people of Noahs Ark Animal Foundation, and where she won her first beauty title of Best Ears. Thanks to that experience, Lola has gone on to win other good doggy titles such as Most Energetic and Employee of the Month, with her foster family in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lola is an 8 month old all white German Shepherd that would do best in a home that has experience with the breed and is prepared for puppy energy, such as a home with older kids as she can be a bit rambunctious at playtime and might knock down smaller children. She is housetrained and knows a few basic commands and tricks but would do best in a home that will continue her training to become the best version of herself. An obedience class would do her wonders as she is a very quick learner! Lola would also do best in a home that has someone there most of the day. She will not be adopted to a family that plans to crate her all day, as she is still trying to grow hair back on parts of her legs from being kenneled for long periods of time. Lolas foster mom works from home and Lola is only crated when everyone in the house will be gone, however she will most likely grow be able to be trusted to roam free alone in a home eventually. At night she is not crated but prefers to sleep with or near her people for instance the hallway outside bedrooms. Some nights she will make the rounds and sleep with everyone, to make sure no one in the family misses out on her cuddles! Lola is a very loving and delightful puppy that would make any family a very good companion that gives her returned love and attention. She told us that she is already very excited to meet you! I am a petite girl who enjoys freedom in the house but dont let my good looks fool you - I am a very smart girl and love to steal food when youre not looking! I am a polite GSD who doesnt jump on humans but I do like to bark when the mail gets delivered. I am potty trained and I know sit, stay, and will usually wait for my food if you tell me! I love squeak balls and love a good hard chew. Im not sure how I feel about other dogs - I see them at the groomers but I usually start to squeal. Im kind of picky when it comes to other dogs and Ive never met a cat before. Ive never met a stranger I didnt like and Ive even been around kids, old and young! I have a fenced-in backyard but I usually stay on a leash because I still havent mastered coming back when called. Im looking for someone who has patience and knowledge of GSDs and would love someone who can take me for a nice, long walk. Senior, Female, Large Mia Mia is a sweetheart of a gal looking for a forever home that will love and cherish her. Mia is great with people, kids, and dogs. Mia is super playful. She has a genetic condition called MegaEsophagus. Her throat does not push food down to her stomach. To help her eat, Mia must sit in a "Bailey Chair" to eat softened food. She must then sit for 30 minutes while gravity works its magic. Mia knows her chair and her routine. Mia must also drink from an elevated water dish. If she eats in any different way, she will likely regurgitate and may aspirate. Due to her condition, she underwent a gastroplexy with her spay. This means you will never have to worry about bloat with Mia. With attention to detail, Mia can live a long happy life. She will reward you with a kind heart and dedication. Mia is whip smart. Mia has basic obedience down and would shine in good citizen and advanced obedience classes. Mia's chair and supplies will come with her. He has been with his foster since June .He is heartworm negative and up to date with his vetting, including neuter. Moe gets along great with dogs. Although Moe has not been tested with children. We have no reason to believe that he would be a problem with them. We are not sure about cats. She was an owner surrender because she was not very nice to the feral kitties in the neighborhood. We will not place her in a home with cats. Nova is great with dogs and children. She is a lovely girl in the home, content to lay at your feet as you work or relax. Adult, Female, Large Pepper Pepper cam into our rescue with her sister and mom, life has not be kind to her. Pepper and her family were part of a neglect case in Oklahoma. Pepper is a very sweet girl, but she will need lots of love to get her confidence back up! Pepper does not mind cats and has been around kids. Pepper is approximately 2 years old and is potty trained. Because she is so shy and timid, she is still working on leash training. We would like Goldy and Pepper to stay together! Do they sound like they could be a part of your family?! A friends daughter fostered her and found her to be sweet. However, it didnt work with her other pets, so she took her back. Princess had a hard time at the shelter with a few incidents. I agreed to take her, and my friends daughter pulled her on the day she was to be euthanized. I picked her up in early April. At the time, she had heartworm. Treatment was completed. Shes probably due for a check on it now. The Dallas shelter had her as 13, but everyone here thinks shes younger. Maybe .When she was surrendered, she was in heat. They spayed her at the shelter. Since Ive had her, shes been sweet to others other than the growls at repairmen. She likes to lick people. Now the special issues she has. Princess has separation anxiety. Shes gone from Prozac when I picked her up to trazadone. The trazadone helps a lot. Acepromazine was too strong, but the boarding place I use sometimes gives her half doses if needed. I can now leave her for several hours without anything happening to the house. She became smart to my tricks to get her into the crate at night, so I leave her out now. She really doesnt get along with other animals. I was told that when I got her, so Ive left my four cats in bedrooms since she arrived. Thats a huge reason why Id like to find her a forever home. Im not skilled with dogs though, so maybe someone could help her overcome that problem. I understand that she was surrendered with another dog. I also go out of town a lot, so I end up boarding her. She is kept away from direct contact with other dogs. Its been mentioned that she has made a lot of progress since she started there. Shes less reactive when other dogs go by her pen. I think the best scenario for her would be with someone who is home a lot and has no other pets. She definitely loves her humans. The sweetest most gorgeous GSD mix who cant wait to find her new home! Rachel has had a rough start to life but that doesnt stop her one bit! Rachel has love for everyone and everything she does. We think she is about 2 years old but in those 2 years she was likely never inside. So know if you would like Rachel as part of your family that she will need training. She doesnt understand how house life works, whats acceptable and whats not. As her fosters we have taught her a few basics but with just a few short weeks with her she will need lots of attention in her new home. Shes a master counter surfer. She does great with the 2 young kids in her foster home ages 4yrs and 18months and also with the other 2 German Shepherds in the home male and female. We do not know how she does with cats or small dogs. I believe Rachel would benefit from having another dog in the house who loves to play as much as she does! She is so playful and full of energy she could go for hours! She is very much a Velcro dog, she will follow you step for step everywhere you go. This gorgeous girl is ready to share her sweet, smart and sensitive self with her forever family! Adult, Female, Large. What this means is that the breeder you are looking at is not actually breeding their own dogs, but rather, they are purchasing them from a kennel or broker. Kennels are often looked at as being lower quality because the puppies have often been bred indiscriminately and sometimes have health problems as a result. Breeders, on the other hand, are people who breed their own dogs and typically take great care in doing so. This is not to say that all breeders are good, but it is important to do your research in order to find a reputable breeder. Puppy mills are essentially large-scale breeding operations where profit is put above the welfare of the animals. The puppies that are born here often have health problems because they are bred indiscriminately and are not given proper care. What is the average price for a German Shepherd Puppy in Iowa? This question does not have a simple answer. Here are some tips on how to find a reputable breeder: 1. Ask your veterinarian for referrals. Good breeders typically have healthy dogs and work closely with their veterinarians. Spend time observing the dogs and ask questions about their health, temperament, and training. Make sure the breeder is registered with the American Kennel Club AKC or another organization that regulates breeders. This is not a guarantee of quality, but it does provide some assurance that the breeder follows some minimum requirements. Take the time to visit the breeder and assess his or her facilities and dogs. Review how puppies are handled and socialized from birth, as well as how they are weaned and introduced into their new homes. This is not a guarantee of substandard quality, but you should be aware of any formal complaints about specific breeders in your area. Make sure you receive a written contract guaranteeing the health of the dog, as well as certification that both parents were tested for genetic disorders. While many breeders are very busy, they should be able to set aside some time for you and answer any questions that you may have about their dogs or the process of purchasing a German Shepherd puppy. Seeing the facilities in person gives you better insight into how well your new puppy will be taken care of. If possible, try to meet both of the parents of your potential pup. If they only seem interested in selling their puppies instead of allowing visitors to inspect their operation, then look elsewhere. The puppies available through the Internet come from all kinds of breeders such as puppy millers and backyard breeders those who only breed one litter at a time. These dogs often suffer from poor nutrition and medical care leading them to health problems later on down the road. These dogs have often been abandoned or surrendered by their previous families and are in need of good homes. Many of the dogs available through rescue groups are already housebroken and know basic commands. A responsible breeder will be more than happy to provide you with the contact information of some of their previous buyers. These people can tell you firsthand about their experience with the breeder and whether or not they would recommend them. This usually means that the dogs are being bred indiscriminately and are not receiving proper care. This will give you a chance to see the dogs in person and ask them about their experience with the breeder. If the breeder is reputable, then their customers should have only good things to say about them. Meeting past customers will also give you a chance to see the puppies in different environments and judge their temperament for yourself. A good breeder will have a good veterinarian they use and will be happy to provide you with their contact information. A responsible breeder will also screen potential buyers to ensure that the dogs are going to good homes. Do you have any female dogs available for viewing? Are your puppies raised in a healthy environment? Do you offer any guarantees on your puppies? Will you provide me with a health certificate for my new puppy? Do you have references I can speak to? However, there are some telltale signs to look out for. If the parents are not available for viewing, it is likely that the breeder is hiding something. Another sign is if the puppies are kept in very poor conditions. The puppies should be clean and well-cared for and should have plenty of space to play. An unethical breeder may also try to pressure you into buying a puppy. They may also try to sell you a puppy that is not yet old enough to leave its mother. If you suspect that you are dealing with an unethical breeder, it is best to walk away. There are plenty of ethical breeders out there who would be happy to help you find the perfect puppy. A responsible breeder will screen their dogs for genetic diseases and will only breed healthy animals. You should also ask for a health certificate from the veterinarian. This can be as simple as installing a fence or kennel. Be prepared to spend time training your new puppy and socializing them with other dogs. German Shepherds are easy to potty train and will usually learn quickly. There are a number of ways to potty train your puppy. You can use pee pads, go outside or use a crate. Whichever method you choose, be patient and consistent. Crate training can be especially helpful in the early weeks while the puppy is still getting used to their new home. How to Stop Your German Shepherd from Barking Barking is a natural behavior for dogs and most owners will eventually have to deal with a barking dog. German Shepherds are particularly prone to barking and can be quite vocal. There are a number of things you can do to stop your dog from barking. You can try training the dog using positive reinforcement or use a bark collar. Thank you for reading. We hope this article was helpful. Steve is passionate about dogs and owns a french bulldog. It gives an estimate of the risk for painful osteoarthritis OA of canine hip dysplasia CHD later in life. With this information, preventive and palliative strategies can be recommended by the PennHIP-trained veterinarian. It has been extremely helpful to me as a breeder to OFA-certify my dogs. If the breeders have been breeding a long time you should see lots of names. You are supporting puppy mills if you buy a dog with these registries as they are mainly for puppy mill breeders, You know what you get with AKC because of record inspections and DNA. All Buyers should beware! Both are breeding females that are not German Shepherds they looked like husky crosses but are registering them as German Shepherds and the registry does not care. At Dawson Creek we feel our puppy protocol is a very important part of our program. We follow the Puppy Culture Program for Breeders and feel it is a major asset in the development of our puppies. Our puppy cultural protocol begins before the puppies arrive and continues throughout their stay at Dawson Creek. However, most importantly, socialization does not end at Dawson Creek for our puppies. We provide strategies and suggestions to help our customers continue the puppy socialization process at home where our Dawson Creek puppies can strive and flourish in their new homes. We would like to share with you a quick glance of what our puppy cultural protocol involves: From the moment of arrival, we begin touching and stroking our puppies as much as possible. Daily cuddle sessions begin during the puppies first stage of life. Days three through 16 are very important. During this stage we provide early neurological stimulation that includes placing the puppy in the palm of your hand and holding the puppy in a variety of positions. Daily cuddle sessions continue. A very exciting and precious time at Dawson Creek for us is the Transitional Period. During this period the puppies are two to three weeks old. The puppies began opening their eyes and moving around more frequently in the whelping box. The opening of their eyes and the toddling around are the first milestones that we record. Towards the end of the Transitional Period the puppies begin to move around with more stability. This is when we began providing the puppies with large squeaky crackle toys to get the startle -recover — curiosity exploration affect. Also, during this period we add a potty area to our whelping box, begin carrying the puppies to short visits to new rooms in the household, and allowing them to explore outside of the whelping box on a variety of textured quilts, blankets, and pads. During this stage the puppies are wormed for the first time and their toenails are clipped. As the puppies continue to grow stronger, they reach the Socialization Period. During this stage the puppies are approximately three to four weeks old. We continue daily cuddling, snuggling, and touching sessions. Also, new toys and sounds are being introduced on- a -daily- basis. The puppies continue to explore new rooms and areas of the house and begin having Short Pup visits with outside family members. During this stage the puppies are being introduced to water and mush. Socialization becomes a little more advanced at week five. The puppies are removed from the nursery and transferred to the weaning pin. Here they experience a variety of new toys, a potty area, crates, and a play pin. The play pin is full of tunnels, balls, toys, things to climb on, and variety of chew toys. During this time the outside world is viewed for the first time. This opens a new world of experiences with many out- door activities. The puppies motor skills have developed very well. Therefore, they are free to run, jump, and play with their siblings. Also, during this time the puppies are being exposed to new training experiences with a clicker. They are rewarded for good behavior such as coming when called, following, sitting on the grooming table, manding sitting with the bottom on the ground and focusing on the trainer. They receive their first visit from the vet and are receiving softened dog food mixed in with their mush. Snuggling, touching, and daily cuddling sessions continue daily. Socialization continues as the puppies move to weeks seven and eight. They are introduced to individual crates and their take home snuggle puppy. Also, the puppies are now taking potty breaks after meals, being exposed to very shallow water, and being introduced to a leash on a sniff and stroll adventure. Cuddling and snuggling session are still occurring daily. The puppies have now transitioned to dry dog food, been weaned from mom, and will receive another vet visit soon. As the puppies prepare to transition to their new homes Dawson Creek is gathering materials to send home with the new puppy parents where socialization will continue, and our puppies will thrive at their new homes. We are very proud to have joined the Puppy Culture Protocol for Breeders. We feel this has become an important asset to our program. Iuka, Mississippi .Welcome to Magnolia Australian Labradoodles! Once we decided to get an Australian Labradoodle, we then set out to find the best breeder we could find. We spent several months trying to find a breeder with not only good reviews, but also one who would understand our needs having a son with autism. We thought we had found a good breeder but they were not responsive and their contract was crazy long with some pretty crazy requirements. Right from the start, Judy was very responsive to ALL our questions. She understood our concerns about getting the right dog for our son. Once we decided to go forward with it, she even let us come visit to get to know our soon-to-be new family member. She has been so responsive to our questions and concerns even after bringing little JoJo home. Her training program has made such a huge difference and has taken away so much of the normal stress of having a new puppy. Thank you Judy. We are so in love with our sweet little JoJo. We elected to do bring our pup home around 12 weeks so he could do the advanced training and it was the right choice. Our pup did amazing in his crate, adjusted quickly and was comfortable going out on a leash to learn his bathroom spot at this new house. He did great with a 18 month old and 5 year old without any nipping. Chris Beck The decision to add a dog into our family was a big one. We took our time researching, with the selection of a breeder being a huge factor. I stumbled upon Judy at Magnolia Labradoodles and was instantly intrigued. I liked that she only had one litter at a time. I knew my puppy would be getting attention and care. I liked that past customers said she was responsive and the experience was personal. My telephone conversation with her was also critical. I had lots of questions and she had answers for all of them and gave me all the time I needed to feel comfortable. I could tell she loved what she did and it was personal to her…not just a business. We opted for the additional training and felt this made the transition home for our dog go smoothly. He did not nip at us, knew his name, how to focus on us, how to sit and was happy in his crate. We had to wait quite a while to bring our dog home, but Judy kept us updated with photos and videos. She even face-timed my children twice so they could see their dog. It was a great experience and worth the wait. I highly recommend Judy and Magnolia Labradoodles. We have always had English Labrador Retrievers, but due to us getting older we wanted something a little smaller but also hardy. Lexi is everything you could ask for: intelligent, kind, loving, good with people and children, loves all dogs, loves to play with our cat, walks and hikes great and the added bonus if the above items are not enough they are absolutely gorgeous!!!! We had an amazing experience with Judy!! Judy was always there to answer all my questions and she still is a year later!! That in itself is an outstanding quality, not to mention the wonderful job Judy does getting them ready for their forever homes. If you are skeptical about doing the 3 week training…DO IT!!! It was well worth it. We put Lexi in her crate the first night and she went right to sleep. I will never forget when we went to pick Lexi up. Judy let us in and there in the living room was this gorgeous, well behaved dog that just sat there until I went over and picked her up. I started crying and as I turned around, so was Judy!! That just showed me the love and compassion she has for raising these outstanding dogs. If after reading this, if you are still unsure, please feel free to contact me. Judy has my contact information. Debbie Stierly Working with Judy was fantastic. Cadbury Harmony and Rhett is as perfect a puppy as you could imagine. From the beginning, Judy helped my daughters face their fear of dogs and see how kind and loving puppies can be. This is absolutely a much better way to ensure success. Judy treats her pups with love and kindness. She dotes on them! When we brought Cadbury home, family and friends could not get over his calm and loving personality. He adjusted immediately, slept well on the first night, and already had learned manners. While it is hard to wait the extra 3 weeks, it is so nice to have a puppy that has learned basic obedience, crate training, and potty training! If you plan to add a puppy to your family and want a dog that will be sweet, obedient, and gentle, look no further! Judy was excellent throughout the process and was responsive, organized, detailed and passionate. Lucy was the smallest in the litter of Harmony and Rhett and needed a lot of extra care just to be able to make it to our home. Judy spent many sleepless nights to make this happen. Lucy is…. She is a kind and gentle puppy with a great spirit for adventure. We are enjoying her everyday! I highly recommend working with Judy if you are looking for a great addition to your family! The puppy that we recently got from Magnolia Australian Doodles was worth the wait and cost for such a lovely little addition to our menagerie. He was introduced to numerous adults, noisy children, other dogs, a cat, sweeper, hour car ride home and multiple other stimuli and he was unfazed. And this was just during the first two days. Not to mention a huge thunder and lightening storm. He is going to one of those special dogs, you talk about. PK Pamela Kratzer Five stars are honestly not enough! Judy made the experience of getting a puppy so easy and stress free. She was always available, and answered my thousands of questions. She sent us updates and photos weekly too! You can tell Judy puts her heart and soul into caring for each litter. Our puppy is almost 3 months old, and we are so happy we chose Magnolia Australian Labradoodles! Our puppy slept the whole first night, and is the most loving and fun puppy ever! Despite the pandemic going on, Judy did her best to socialize the puppies. She sends you home with a complete binder with everything you need to raise your puppy! Duke has been a great addition to our family and I highly recommend Magnolia Australian Labradoodles if you want a caring and knowledgeable breeder!! You guys are truly incredible. Thank you. He really brings a smile to all of us, all the time. I had done a lot of research on the web of this breed. Judy welcomed my questions and answered with obvious knowledge of having done her own research. She was able to answer any question or concern that I may have had. I highly recommend Judy and Magnolia Australian Labradoodle kennel to anyone looking for a beautiful Australian Labradoodle. I would also highly recommend the additional 3 weeks with Judy as she trains and teaches confidence. Ella came to us, confident and well adjusted. She was able to be in her crate all night 9hrs without even a whimper. She was able to sit and layed down on command. She is a lovable, sweet, attentive and is so well adjusted from the minute we brought her home. Without any hesitation, I give all the credit to her first human mommy, Judy Adams of Magnolia Australian Labradoodles. We adore our Little Miss Ella!! Joyce Rusin. Post by: Emily W. These dogs can be described in many ways: wonderful family dogs, great companions, fantastic workout buddies, and a best friend. Since dogs of this breed have quite a bit of energy, they may be a little too much for first-time dog parents, but overall, these dogs can along with nearly everyone. Dogs of this breed can also do well in a multi-pet home, though it is most helpful when your pup is socialized and introduced to their four-legged siblings from a young age. Breed History Labradoodles first made an appearance in the s. Australian dog breeder, Wally Conron, was tasked with creating a guide dog that was more suitable for people with a dog allergy. Having a lower dander count, Poodles were the perfect breed to mix with the friendly and helpful Labrador Retriever, thus began the Labradoodle. Over the years, as Doodle mixes have become increasingly more popular, the Mini Australian Labradoodle came about as a mix between Poodles , Labradors , and Cocker Spaniels. These dogs are unique because they are a mix of three separate breeds, not the usual two. Mini Australian Labradoodles vs. Cockapoos vs. Cockapoos are a mix of two breeds: Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. As you may have already concluded from their name, Aussiedoodles have Australian Shepherd and Poodle parents. Attributes The typical Mini Australian Labradoodle temperament is favorable and easy-going. These are a great middle-of-the-road breed, making them a wonderful choice for most families. However, before adopting one, most pet parents first have some questions about these dogs that they want to be answered. Yes, Mini Australian Labradoodles do shed, though not excessively. With that in mind, how much your dog sheds may be determined by their coat texture: hair, fleece, or wool. Usually, hair will shed the most and wool the least. Are Mini Australian Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? No dog breed is fully hypoallergenic, but some are more allergy-friendly than others , the Mini Australian Labradoodle being one of them. Mini Australian Labradoodles are considered small, typically weighing between pounds and standing around inches at their shoulder. Even though these are the standard measurements for these dogs, there can be variance from one litter to another because they are a mixed breed. Training One of the many fun and rewarding parts of being a dog parent is getting to train your dog. Training can be a rewarding process that is both enjoyable for you and your dog, plus it allows you and your best pal to spend some quality time with one another. Training should begin as early as possible. Whether you adopt your dog at five months of age or five years, you can start training the very day you bring your pal home. Remember to be consistent, patient, never use harsh tones, and provide rewards for a job well done. If you notice that your dog seems to be getting bored during training, it may be helpful to keep sessions on the shorter side, mix up commands, or simply change the environment in which you are training. On top of commands, other essential training items include house training. You may be surprised just how quickly these intelligent dogs can learn, but some Mini Australian Labradoodles may take a little more time than others. For dog parents, crate training is also a valuable resource. Not to mention, whenever your dog is home alone, you can have the peace of mind that they will be secure in their crate, instead of possibly rooting around in the garbage or making confetti out of your couch. Going hand-in-hand with training is socialization. Socialization mainly involves introducing your dog to new people, places, sights, and sounds, so the possibilities are endless. Grooming Keeping your pup well-groomed is a major responsibility of being a dog parent. Helping your pup look their best can also help them feel their best. If they appear dirty, clean the outer ear with a cotton ball and dog-safe ear cleaning solution—never use cotton swabs or clean down into the inner ear. Though their floppy ears are adorable, Mini Australian Labradoodles can be more likely to develop ear infections because of them. Keeping their ears clean and drying them thoroughly after a bath or swim can help reduce infections. If you notice that your dog is prone to getting eye goopies, simply use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away from their eyes gently. Use a new cloth or the opposite corner for each eye. Of course, coat care is an essential grooming item when it comes to Mini Australian Labradoodles. On top of monthly nail trimming and a bath every few months, your pup will also need their hair trimmed every few months. Like nearly all Doodles, their hair will continuously grow, so you can either give them a little trim every so often or do a more drastic haircut a few times a year. Care Caring for a Mini Australian Labradoodle is a rewarding task. Given the care and attention they need, in return, these adorable pups will shower you with unconditional love. Step one of caring for your best pal is to find an outlet for that Mini Australian Labradoodle energy. As a smaller breed, these dogs typically require close to an hour of physical exercise every day. This can be in the form of a walk, hike, jog, or run. Even some off-leash running is a terrific option, as long as your pup is in a securely fenced-in area. On top of exercise, your Mini Australian Labradoodle will also want some playtime every day. Mini Australian Labradoodles are intelligent dogs that enjoy getting the chance to work their minds. Mini Australian Labradoodles are naturally social dogs that prefer to spend time with their family. By exercising and playing with your dog, you are simultaneously providing them with the one-on-one attention they crave and the mental and physical stimulation they need. Providing your dog with a nutritious and age-appropriate diet is crucial to keep them energized and in great health. Too many treats can lead to some unwanted pounds and eventually to obesity. Common Health Issues Mini Australian Labradoodles are relatively healthy dogs, but they are still susceptible to developing health issues. When you first adopt your Mini Australian Labradoodle, it will be necessary to establish them with a local veterinarian. Plus, these appointments can also be beneficial for you.

Be sure the application is filled out in its entirety. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Fights are happening, resulting in injuries to both dogs. Bailey is very sweet, current on vaccines, and spayed. She has been ok with male boxers so we will consider placing her with a sweet boy, who loves to play. Bailey has no history with young children. She is currently taking Prozac and Trazadone at the advice of a trainer who claimed it would help to keep her from panting in her crate. Shame on this vet who willy nilly dished out these drugs to a 13 month old dog, without asking why!! Bailey needs a committed home, with an understanding of the needs of an adolescent boxer. She should attend positive based training with her new humans. Bailey would love a fenced in yard, in addition to lots of walks and continued socialization. If you are interested in this girl, please apply! Where do your boxers come from? Many of our boxers are owner surrenders. Perhaps the owner purchased the dog on impulse, not understanding the needs of a boxer. Sometimes, financial situations change, and families are not able to care for the dog anymore. We also take dogs that have been brought to shelters around New England. If a shelter reaches out for help, we do our best to find placement for the boxer in need. Lastly, we have a wonderful relationship with boxer rescue in Puerto Rico, and we work closely with them to bring boxers in need, from the island, to New England. All of our boxers are temperament tested and evaluated before coming into rescue. It should be noted that ALL dogs require a decompression period when going to a new home. Can I adopt a female dog if I already have a female dog? The short answer is no. Our experience in placing dogs, has shown us that placing two females together is oftentimes not the best long term situation. We receive many calls from owners needing to surrender their female boxers because there is fighting with another female dog in the house. Either way, the fighting is often brutal and bloody. We have adopted a policy to never place two female dogs in the same house. Are your boxers healthy? They are brought up to date on vaccines, tested for heartworm, and spayed or neutered unless too young or not medically able to be. Their vet records are provided upon adoption. Do I need to have a fenced in yard to adopt a boxer? We do not require a fenced in yard for all of our boxers. We look at each dog, individually, and based on the needs of that dog, we may require fencing. Please note that we do not consider an electric fence to be a proper method of containment and are not able place a dog in a home that uses electric fencing. Do you have a shelter where I can come meet the boxers? We are not a shelter and do not have a physical location where you can meet our adoptees. Most boxers will stay with their owners or shelter until we can secure a foster or adoptive home for them. What Are Your Adoption Fees? Boston Boxers are perfect family pets. There are lots of fruit and veg that are safe some are even healthy! After all, there are a lot of human foods that can make our dogs very poorly , or even kill them. Alcohol, chocolate and foods containing the sweetener xylitol can all be deadly to our four-legged friends. This way you know your dog will get the right balance of nutrients and it will only contain safe ingredients. However, if you want to give them a treat, your dog may love some safe fruit and veg as a healthy snack. Complete dog foods contain all the nutrients your dog needs to keep them happy and healthy. Some fruit and veg, on the other hand, make great treats! Just like our favourite snacks, commercial treats from the pet shop or supermarket can sometimes be quite fattening and contain a lot of additives. Which vegetables can my dog eat? There are a few different vegetables our dogs are fine eating but remember, a little for us is a lot to our dogs so keep treat sizes small! Always cut it into bite-sized pieces to avoid choking and feed in moderation, especially if your dog isn't used to eating fresh veg. Dog-safe vegetables include: Broccoli — in small amounts, raw or steamed Brussel Sprouts Carrots — many dogs enjoy them raw, but they can be given steamed or boiled Celery Green beans — steamed, boiled or raw Peas — sugar snap peas, garden peas and mangetout, but avoid tinned peas Sweet potatoes and potatoes — plain, boiled or steamed not raw Sweetcorn — fresh cooked corn with nothing added can be given to dogs but it must be cut off the cob first! Click to enlarge Which fruit can my dog eat? Just like veg, there are a number of fruits our dogs can eat safely. They can benefit from this antioxidant-rich vegetable as it defends against illness and protects the immune system. Some dogs will love a small piece of artichoke, whereas others will immediately turn their nose up, so you will need to experiment to see where your Lab fits in. Only feed your dog a tiny portion and provide slowly to avoid choking. You can give artichoke raw or cooked, and dogs can eat the leaves, hearts, and stems. Asparagus Labradors can eat asparagus. It makes a healthy option for your dog as it contains vitamins K, A, B1, B2, C, and E, along with folate, iron, copper, zinc, fiber, and manganese. They also contain potassium and antioxidants that help flush out toxins from the bloodstream and promote good heart health. I try not to overcook my asparagus as it can lose many nutrients. You may, therefore, need to reconsider giving asparagus if your puppy is not yet fully house-trained! Beets Labradors can eat beets. They are full of iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, fiber, and vitamins. They are also suitable for digestion and maintaining a healthy coat and skin. As they are relatively high in oxalic acid, you should only give your Labrador a small amount as substantial quantities can lead to a calcium deficiency or kidney stones. Avoid giving canned beets due to their high salt content. They contain essential vitamins and minerals, and the red variety is the most nutritious as they have the highest amount of antioxidants such as beta carotene and vitamins. The seeds and stems are best removed as your Labrador will find these hard to digest. You can feed bell peppers raw. However, your dog will find the skin tough and chewy, so it would be better to steam or mash them. Broccoli Labradors can eat broccoli. It is high in fiber, vitamins C and K, and low in fat. It can protect against heart disease and helps maintain healthy bones and skin. Broccoli florets contain a compound known as isothiocyanate that can cause gastric irritation and significant gas in some dogs, so only serve your Labrador a tiny amount, as it could be unpleasant for both of you! But broccoli also has cancer-fighting properties that have been shown to suppress tumor growth. This recent study whereby dogs were given broccoli supplements concluded that broccoli might help inhibit cancer formation. You can feed broccoli raw or cooked. Take care if you are feeding your dog the stalks, and make sure you cut them into small pieces to prevent choking or obstruction. Brussels Sprouts Labradors can eat Brussels sprouts. They are loaded with nutrients, including fiber and antioxidants, that are great for dogs. They also contain vitamin K, which helps the blood clot properly, builds bones, and protects the heart. If you decide to feed them to your Lab, they are better steamed or boiled steaming preserves the most significant amount of nutrients. Cabbage Labradors can eat cabbage including red, savoy, and bok choy and it is good for them. It is full of nutrients, especially vitamins C and K and fiber. Cabbage is also known to cause the same excess gas as Brussel sprouts and broccoli, so you may want to feed very sparingly and introduce it slowly! Carrot Labradors can eat carrots. Both raw and cooked carrots are healthy options, making an excellent low-calorie snack. They are highly nutritious and loaded with phytonutrients with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. They contain vitamins A, K, and C, potassium, calcium, iron, and fiber. Carrots are also a good source of beta-carotene, which produces vitamin A, which is good for healthy bones, eyes, skin, and the immune system. They are also great for the heart. Frozen or raw carrots are ideal for giving to teething puppies. My dog loves to crunch on raw carrot pieces, and they also help clean her teeth. I think carrots are one of the best vegetables to feed your dog. Cauliflower Labradors can eat cauliflower. It is quite safe for dogs to eat and has known nutritional qualities such as vitamins K and C, calcium, potassium, folate, and soluble fiber. It may also reduce inflammation and help to fight cancer. However, cauliflower contains a chemical that will give your dog the dreaded gas! If you let your Labrador try it, just feed a tablespoonful, and preferably cooked. There are far better choices! Celery Labradors can eat celery, and it is good for them. It contains vitamins A, B, C, and K, folate, phosphorus, potassium, and manganese, and is an excellent source of fiber. These excellent nutrients are needed to promote a healthy heart and even fight cancer. Make sure to cut it into bite-sized pieces and introduce them slowly. Corn Although corn is a good source of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and natural antioxidants for your Labrador, it is a starchy vegetable and not something that they need. However, if your dog is with you on a long hike and needs a quick energy boost, corn is an ideal alternative treat to take with you. You must not give your Lab the cob to chew on as some dogs have been known to try and eat the whole thing and swallow the entire cob! This can cause choking or a serious digestive obstruction. Instead, remove the kernels and give as a tasty treat. As corn is high in carbohydrates, only feed small amounts to avoid weight gain. Cucumbers are strictly a fruit, but as most people think of them as a vegetable because of how they are used in the culinary world, we will discuss them here. Although cucumbers are mostly comprised of water, they are low in calories and high in nutrients such as vitamin K which is good for bone health and blood clotting. They also contain antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce chronic disease. Cucumbers make a great crunchy snack for your Labrador. They are best fed with the peel removed and chopped into bite-sized pieces. As they are a great source of hydration they are especially good to feed in the summer months. Eggplant Eggplant also known as aubergine in Europe is a source of fiber, which is important for digestion. It also contains vitamins B6, K, folate, potassium, niacin, and phytonutrients that help protect your Labrador from chronic diseases. Some dogs may not like the taste of eggplant, so if this vegetable is a fan of yours, you may want to experiment first by giving your dog a small taste to see how he handles it. Eggplant should be cooked before giving it to your dog as he may have difficulty digesting it raw. It can be grilled, baked, or boiled. Green Beans Green beans are great vegetables for Labradors as they are highly nutritious, and most dogs seem to like them. They are full of important vitamins and minerals, and fiber and are low in calories. My dog loves green beans chopped up and added to her bowl and they are gone in no time! Kale Kale is considered one of the cruciferous vegetables, along with Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. Pros: Kale has many health benefits being a good source of fiber, vitamins K, C, and E, iron, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. So, can dogs eat kale and other cruciferous veggies? However, due to its high water content, the nutritional value of lettuce is negligible, but it does contain beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A. Other nutrients include vitamin C, calcium, iron, and fiber. I have only tried my dog once with iceberg lettuce. Mushrooms store-bought Store-bought mushrooms are generally safe for dogs, whereas wild mushrooms are toxic and can be highly dangerous, proving fatal in some cases, depending on the species ingested. They are low in calories and full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The benefits of eating mushrooms include preventing heart disease, boosting the immune system, supporting liver and kidney function, and fighting cancer. Like most other veggies for dogs, they are better served cooked. Parsnips Labradors can eat parsnips. They are quite safe to feed your dog and they contain plenty of vitamins C and B6, folic acid, and potassium. They also contain antioxidants to help fight cancer. As parsnips are quite starchy along with other root vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and beets only feed in moderation. They can be fed raw as long as they are chopped up into small digestible pieces, or they can be cooked which is recommended. Peas Peas are safe for dogs and have an abundance of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, K, and many B vitamins. They also contain fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. Peas also contain lutein, an antioxidant good for skin, heart, and eye health. Peas are starchy carbohydrates and are great for boosting energy levels. You can feed your Lab fresh or frozen peas but avoid the canned variety as they usually contain a lot of sodium and additives. Potato cooked Potatoes are starchy vegetables and are okay to feed to your dog. However, they need to be cooked first and the skin removed. Do not give your Labrador raw potato or if the potato is green as they contain a compound called solanine which is toxic in high amounts. However, cooking potatoes reduces the levels of solanine, making them quite safe. Potatoes contain vitamins C and B6, iron, magnesium, potassium, and many other nutrients that are great for dogs. As they are high in carbohydrates, feed sparingly, especially if your dog already has difficulty controlling his weight. French fries or potato chips are definitely off the menu as these are not healthy, either for you, me, or your Lab! Sweet potatoes are a better option as they are much more nutritious. The abundance of fiber absorbs water like a sponge and helps to alleviate diarrhea. Not only that, but pumpkin can help if your dog is constipated too! This is because it contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. They also work as an effective deworming agent as they have cucurbitin. Both raw and cooked pumpkin is just fine for your Labrador. However, cooked is better for easier consumption. Rhubarb Stalks So, does rhubarb belong in the veggie section? Despite rhubarb often being used in jams and fruit pies, it is technically a vegetable. Dogs can eat it, but only the stalks! Rhubarb leaves are poisonous to both humans and dogs. I remember as a kid eating peeled sticks of rhubarb dipped in mounds of sugar to take away the sourness. You can feed raw, without sugar, or it can be stewed or baked. Rutabaga is a cross between a cabbage and a turnip. Rutabaga and turnip are good sources of calcium, folate, potassium, vitamins A, C, and antioxidants. They are very nutritious, low in calories, and are a good overall disease-fighting vegetable. They can be eaten raw or cooked. If you are going to feed these veggies raw to your Labrador, make sure you thoroughly wash them first to get rid of any traces of bacteria or pesticides. Spinach Spinach is high in iron and provides fiber, vitamins A, B, C, and K, beta-carotene, and antioxidants. It is known as a cancer fighter and has lots of nutritional properties that can benefit your dog. It is, however, somewhat controversial as to whether you should feed your dog spinach due to the high amount of oxalic acid it contains. Serve steamed as this is the healthiest way of cooking to preserves all the goodness. Sweet Potato Labradors can eat sweet potatoes. They are full of vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as calcium, iron, folate, potassium, copper, thiamine, and iron. These vegetables are also rich in beta-carotene which is converted into high amounts of vitamin A for healthy skin, good eye health, and vision. They support the immune system and are good for the overall health of your Labrador. Sweet potatoes should be cooked and the skin removed before feeding to your dog. They hold their nutritional value better when steamed or boiled, as opposed to baked. As sweet potatoes are mainly starchy carbohydrates, if your dog is overweight, less active, or diabetic, they are best avoided unless you give a very small amount. Squash All varieties of squash are safe for your dog. Pumpkin is also part of the squash family. If your Lab enjoys the taste of pumpkin, then he will no doubt like the naturally sweet taste of squash too! Squash is highly nutritious and has several health benefits for dogs. It contains vitamins A, C, and K as well as being loaded with beta carotene, fiber, magnesium, and potassium. If your Lab is suffering from diarrhea , a small amount of cooked squash mixed into their usual food can help. Please do not feed the peel, as your dog will struggle to digest it. This veggie is nutrient-dense and includes fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. It is low in fat and cholesterol and makes a good choice for overweight dogs. A thin slice of frozen zucchini in the summer is great for your Labrador. Can Labradors Eat Vegetables? Now you know all the vegetables that your dog can safely eat, you might also be wondering, can Labradors actually eat vegetables? Labradors can eat vegetables as dogs have adapted to an omnivorous diet over thousands of years of domestication. Dogs also have teeth molars with flat broad surfaces that are positioned toward the back of the jaw. These are designed for grinding up food, including plant material, such as fruit and vegetables. In conclusion, Labradors can eat both animal and plant foodstuffs and remain healthy. Should Labradors Eat Vegetables? Almost everything we eat plays a part in keeping us functioning like a well-oiled machine. But what about our pets? Should Labradors eat vegetables? Labradors should eat vegetables as they provide an additional source of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Vegetables can be a big health boost for your dog and can help reduce the risk of developing many chronic diseases, including cancer. As vegetables are low in calories and fat, they make an excellent choice if your dog is struggling with obesity and needs to lose a few pounds. They are also cholesterol-free and contain less sugar than fruits. Vegetables should only be fed in moderation. As a general guideline, a few small pieces a day will be just fine for your Lab. How to Feed Vegetables to Dogs Here are some guidelines on how to feed vegetables to your dog: Introduce vegetables slowly to avoid any tummy troubles! Wash the vegetables first to get rid of any dirt, bacteria, or remaining pesticides. Cook veggies to aid digestion. I like to use a steamer. Feed them in small bite-sized pieces to prevent choking or digestive issues. You can feed frozen veggies for convenience. Be wary of canned vegetables as many are high in salt and other additives. What Vegetables are Toxic to Dogs? Garlic is 5 times more potent than onion and leeks. If your Lab ingests a toxic dose, he may display symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and stomach pain. Serious cases can result in weakness, breathing problems, and collapse. Cooked potato with the skin removed is fine as the cooking reduces the amount of solanine. Green tomatoes also fall into this category. Rhubarb Leaves Although the stalks of the rhubarb plant are safe for your Labrador, the leaves contain soluble oxalic acid, which is toxic if ingested in large enough quantities. Signs of poisoning include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, tremors, and in severe cases, renal failure can occur. If you grow rhubarb at home, keep it fenced off and ensure your dog is never left unsupervised in the garden area. Mushrooms There are thousands of wild mushroom species and many are toxic to dogs. Mushroom poisoning in dogs can have serious consequences, including liver and kidney failure, disorientation, seizures, and in serious cases death can occur. A small amount of store-bought mushrooms such as white button will generally be safe as long as they are plain and without butter, garlic, and seasoning. Final Thoughts We all love to reward our dogs with treats and experiment with new ones, and vegetables make a great option. Here are a few takeaways from the article: There are many vegetables you can safely feed your dog. Some make better choices than others. Experiment by feeding sparingly and slowly. Dogs are omnivores and can digest veggies. Most vegetables are better served cooked to aid digestion. Be aware of the vegetables that are toxic to dogs. Consult your vet before feeding, especially if your dog has a health condition. Are you looking to buy something for your dog? Make sure to check out my favorite dog gear below. They are a good source of vitamins A and C, calcium, phosphorus, and fiber. The vitamins are essential for maintaining healthy bones and tissue. They also help to keep teeth clean and freshen their breath. Your Lab will enjoy the sweet taste and the crunchy texture of apples. Remove the seeds as they contain a compound called amygdalin, and this gets broken down into toxic cyanide by food enzymes. However, your Labrador would have to eat many apple seeds to be poisoned. To give you an idea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a person weighing 70kg would have to eat around 40 apple cores to receive a fatal dose, so a Labrador Retriever weighing 35kg would have to eat 20! Apricots Labradors can eat apricots. They are rich in vitamins A and C and contain potassium, copper, and beta-carotene, which can help fight against cancer. When chewed and digested, these parts produce cyanide and can be harmful if consumed substantially. Your Labrador can enjoy a few small bites now and again. Bananas Labradors can eat bananas. They are high in potassium which can support kidney and heart function. They are also high in vitamins B6 and C, biotin, fiber, magnesium, and copper. They do, however, contain a lot of sugar as they are a high carbohydrate food, so only feed them sparingly. Do not feed the peel as it may be too tough to digest. I like to give my dog a couple of small banana pieces when we hike, giving her a quick energy boost. Bananas can also be served mashed or frozen and then sliced. Blackberries Labradors can eat blackberries. They contain many valuable antioxidants that can prevent or slow down damage to cells and are loaded with vitamins A, B, C, E, and K and fiber. As they are lower in sugar than other fruits, they make an excellent choice for your Lab. I love blackberry picking in the summer, and these sweet juicy fruits are great to share with your Labrador. Frozen blackberries can also be a welcome treat in the warm weather to help cool your dog down. However, some dogs may not like their taste, yet others will enjoy them. Blueberries Labradors can eat blueberries. They are incredibly healthy and nutritious and are an excellent snack for dogs. Blueberries are a superfood due to their antioxidant properties that help prevent cell damage and cancer and reduce inflammation. They are a great source of vitamins C and K and fiber. Additionally, they contain phytochemicals. Scientists believe these compounds can help to fight cancer and heart disease. Monkoodog Coconut Labradors can eat coconut. It helps prevent viruses, reduces inflammation, and can even help to treat yeast infection. The natural oils lead to shinier fur and less dry skin. Make sure to remove the outer shell and husk, as these can be harmful if swallowed. Cranberries Labradors can eat cranberries. They are a superfood containing vitamins C, E, K, manganese, and fiber. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, and this study showed that antioxidant capacity was significantly increased in animal organs after being given cranberry juice. These little fruits help keep cancer at bay and boost the immune system. They have antibacterial properties to help to prevent and control urinary tract infections , as evidenced in this study. They can be given raw, cooked, or dried but avoid cranberry juice containing sugar. Cucumbers Labradors can eat cucumbers. They contain calcium, potassium, copper, magnesium, and biotin and are loaded with vitamins B1, C, and K. Their benefits include improving joints and connective tissue and strengthening bones. Although you are more likely to find cucumbers in the vegetable aisle in the grocery store, they are technically a fruit. They are also ideal for overweight dogs as they are low in calories and boost energy. Dates Labradors can eat dates. They are packed with many nutrients and provide several health benefits. Dates contain fiber, potassium, calcium, vitamins A, B, and C, and disease-fighting antioxidants. Despite the confusion, dates are the fruit of the date palm tree, and they are usually sold dried. The confusion lies in their similar appearance to raisins dried grapes , which are poisonous to dogs. They are, however, high in sugar, so you will need to consider this when feeding to avoid a stomach upset, but they can be good if your Lab needs a quick energy boost during lots of exercise or play. Make sure you remove the pit before feeding to avoid choking or buy ones with the pits already removed! Kiwi Fruit Labradors can eat kiwi fruit. They are a sweet fruit loaded with vitamin C, potassium, iron, and fiber, providing vast nutritional benefits. Their antioxidants help to protect against cancer and strengthen the immune system. It contains a high amount of insoluble fiber, which can cause a stomach upset. Never feed kiwi fruit whole, but cut it into slices. Too many of these fruits can cause a stomach upset, including vomiting and diarrhea. They also provide little or no nutritional benefit for your Labrador. Remember, too, that the digestive system of your Labrador is much more sensitive than humans! If your Labrador does brave it and snaffles a piece, make sure you have removed the peel first. Also, do not feed the pith the white parts or seeds, as all of these parts contain compounds called psoralens. These are toxic to dogs, especially if a large enough quantity is consumed. There are far better choices to choose from. Mango Labradors can eat mango. Slices of mango make a sweet, nutritious treat that contains vitamins A, B6, C, and E. They are also full of fiber. But they do have a lot of sugar, so feed them sparingly, as too much mango can cause vomiting and diarrhea. You should remove the skin as your Lab will find it difficult to digest. The hard pit is a choking hazard, so make sure this is also removed. Serve by cutting it into bite-sized chunks, and you can also feed it frozen. Its high antioxidant properties are good for promoting healthy cell function and reducing the risk of cancer and arthritis. Cantaloupe and honeydew melon are low in calories and high in water content. Small pieces are tasty and refreshing for your Labrador, especially on hot days. Melon does, however, have high sugar content, so only feed in moderation. My dog loves a chunk of melon, especially in the summer. They are good sources of beta-carotene that the body converts to vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy skin, teeth, and bones. The fleshy parts are okay for your Lab to eat but avoid the stone to prevent poisoning, choking, or GI blockage. These stone fruits also contain lots of fiber for healthy digestion and potassium — good for heart and kidney disorders. They are also full of antioxidants to ward off cancer and boost overall health and the immune system. These fruits are pretty sugary, so you must consider that if you wish to feed them to your Lab. Olives Labradors can eat olives. They are perfectly safe for dogs to eat. Nutritionally, they contain many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and good fats. A couple of plain, unsalted olives can be a healthy snack for your Lab. But here is the caveat. You will need to remove the pits to prevent choking, blockages, or cracked teeth! Dental costs are expensive — and the pits contain toxic compounds. However, your Labrador would have to ingest many of these to suffer severe poisoning. They also contain fiber and potassium. But there are some warnings. Like other citrus fruits, your Labrador may not like the acidic zing of oranges! However, if you find you have a citrus-loving pooch, only give a tiny amount due to their high sugar content and tartness. Too much sugar and citric acid can cause an upset stomach. You must only feed the flesh part of the orange as the leathery peel is hard for your Lab to digest. Also, the seeds and the white pith contain toxic compounds, so avoid these. My dog turns her head away after the slightest sniff. Pears Labradors can eat pears. They are high in potassium, vitamins A, C, and K, and are loaded with fiber. Vitamin K is known for increasing bone density. Pears are believed to reduce the risk of strokes and have anti-cancer properties due to their antioxidants. Pears contain a high amount of sugar so feed sparingly, especially if your Labrador needs to lose a few pounds. However, a few slices can be a healthy and nutritious treat throughout the week. Like apples, the core and seeds will need to be removed first. Persimmons Labradors can eat persimmons. They include a large amount of vitamins A and C. They also contain many other nutrients, such as antioxidants, fiber, potassium, manganese, folic acid, and beta-carotene. The benefits of persimmons are that they can improve overall health and help to combat cancer. They can also reduce inflammation and help with constipation due to their high amount of fiber. Take precautions with the seeds, as these can trigger a stomach upset, so you need to remove them before feeding. It also contains bromelain, an enzyme that provides anti-inflammatory properties. If you wish to try your dog with a small piece, remove the prickly peel and crown first. Pineapple is also quite sugary, so only feed sparingly unless your Lab has quite a taste for this fruit and needs a quick energy boost during a long walk! Frozen chunks of pineapple make an excellent snack in the summer and will help to keep your Lab hydrated. Avoid canned pineapple as it contains lots of added sugar. Raspberries Raspberries are excellent for Labradors to eat as they are low in sugar and calories and contain lots of vitamin C, fiber, folic acid, iron, potassium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. They have anti-inflammatory properties that can help the joints and are perfect for senior dogs or those with mobility issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Raspberries contain a tiny amount of xylitol. This natural sweetener can cause death due to its toxicity if consumed in large amounts. To put this into context, a 10kg dog would have to eat at least 32 cups of raspberries to prove fatal. My dog loves raspberries, and she enjoys them frozen when the weather is warm. Strawberries Labradors can eat strawberries. They are full of fiber, vitamins C, B1, B6, and K, folic acid, potassium, iodine, and magnesium. Strawberries are high in antioxidants. They can help slow down the aging process, strengthen the immune system, and help with weight management. Despite their sweetness, they are surprisingly low in sugar and calories. Strawberries are a delicious fruit to eat. My dog adores them all year round. Watermelon Labradors can eat watermelon as they are full of vitamins A, B6, and C and fiber to aid digestion. They also contain potassium, which helps lower blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease and strokes. Everyone loves a nice refreshing piece of watermelon in the hot weather, including my dog. Serve by cutting it into cubes. Should Labradors Eat Fruit? Almost everything we eat plays a part in keeping us functioning like a well-oiled machine. But what about our pets? Labradors can eat fruit. They provide additional nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Fruit can be a big health boost for your dog and help reduce the risk of developing many chronic diseases, including cancer. Fruit helps to strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, improve skin, hair, and eyesight, and help with digestion. Fruits are low in calories and fat and make an excellent choice if your Labrador struggles with obesity and needs to lose weight. As pet treats can be high in calories, fruits can provide a healthier alternative. Labradors can eat fruit as dogs have adapted to an omnivorous diet through the domestication process. Dogs also have molars used to grind and crush plant matter, such as fruits and vegetables. In other words, Labs can eat both animal and plant foods and remain perfectly healthy. It has loads of info on nutrition, types of diet, how much to feed, etc. How to Feed Fruit to Your Labrador Here are some guidelines on how to feed fruit to your Labrador: Introduce fruit slowly to avoid any tummy troubles! Wash the fruit first to eliminate any dirt, bacteria, or remaining pesticides. Remove any pits, seeds, or rind. These hazards include poisoning, choking, gastrointestinal blockage, stomach upset, or cracked teeth! Offer small bite-sized pieces or slices to prevent choking. Fruits can be mashed or pureed. Frozen fruits are excellent in the summer and help to keep your dog cool. Be wary of canned fruit as many contain sugary syrup. Avoid fruit juice due to its high sugar content and acidity. You should only feed fruits to your Labrador in moderation. Recommended Portion Sizes Below are the recommended fruit portion sizes when feeding your Lab. Tweet on Twitter What vegetables are good for Labradors? Dogs are omnivorous, so they are able to eat a wide variety of foods, including many vegetables. We take a look at what vegetables are good for Labradors, vegetables safe for dogs, and the benefits they can offer. Why You Might Want to Offer Your Lab Vegetables If you feed your dog with a commercial food that he loves, you might not care about offering them additional snacks like vegetables. But, many people are choosing to prepare homemade dog food for their Labradors. As omnivorous animals, safe vegetables are also a popular option for training treats. So, always check before offering. What Vegetables are Good for Labradors? No matter which vegetable you offer, make sure to wash it thoroughly to remove any pesticides or harmful chemicals. Asparagus Asparagus spears are safe for Labradors to eat. The leaves of the asparagus fern are NOT safe for dogs to eat. Generally, store bought asparagus spears do not have these leaves. Raw asparagus is tough to chew and digest. It can cause digestive issues in Labs, such as diarrhea and vomiting. It can also be a choking hazard. Some of the nutrients asparagus can offer include: folate, vitamins K, C, and E, beta-carotene, and more. Grilling or cooking asparagus will soften it, and make it easier for your Lab to digest. But, whether you are offering it raw or cooked, make sure to chop it small to reduce the risk of choking. Raw beetroot is quite firm, and can be hard for dogs to chew and digest. This means it is also a potential choking hazard. Cooking beetroot will soften it, and make it easier for your dog to digest without issues. Beets contain vitamins A and C, calcium, and iron, among other nutrients. Plain cooked beetroot is safe for Labs to eat, and contributes some great nutrients to their diet. Broccoli Broccoli florets are safe for Labs to eat in small amounts. This veggie also contains isothiocyanates. If your dog eats too much broccoli, the isothiocyanates can cause mild to severe gastrointestinal distress. They can even be fatal if your dog consumes a large amount of this veggie. So, you may want to speak to your vet before offering this vegetable. If you do offer it, only give very small amounts. Cooking broccoli will help to soften it and reduce the risk of choking. It will also make it easier to digest. Brussel Sprouts What vegetables are good for Labradors? Brussel sprouts can be good for Labs in small amounts! But, this is another vegetable that contains the substance isothiocyanate. Too many sprouts can lead to severe gastrointestinal upset for dogs. So, only ever offer your dog a small amount of this vegetable. And be aware that it can cause pretty smelly gas! Cooking brussel sprouts will help to make them more digestible. Cut them up to reduce the risk of choking. Carrots Carrots are a safe and popular vegetable choice for Labs and other dogs. Carrots contain antioxidants, vitamin K and vitamin B6. Raw carrots can be a choking hazard, but some dogs will also enjoy their hardness to chew on. Raw carrots can also help to combat the buildup of plaque, and improve dental health. Cooking carrots will soften them, making them easier to chew and digest. You can offer carrots with the skin on or off, but either way, make sure they are washed. Cauliflower What vegetables are good for Labradors? Cauliflower florets make the list! Cauliflower contains vitamins K and C, fiber, calcium, potassium, and more. Uncooked, this vegetable can be hard to digest, chew, and can cause a choking risk. But cooking them will soften them and reduce this risk. Feeding too much cauliflower can cause gastrointestinal issues like gas and stomach upsets. So, only offer small amounts of this vegetable. Celery Celery contains fiber, vitamins A, C, and K, as well as various antioxidants. Like other vegetables, it should be chopped up into small pieces before offering to reduce the risk of choking. On top of this, too much fiber can cause digestive problems. But, in general, this food is a safe occasional treat for Labs. Corn Although corn is a staple cereal crop, many people consider corn on the cob to be a vegetable. So is this a good vegetable for Labradors? The corn kernels are safe for your dog to eat. But the cob itself is not. The cob can cause intestinal blockages that are very dangerous. So, if you really want to feed your dog this vegetable, remove it from the cob before offering it. Corn is quite a starchy food. It can be hard for dogs to digest, and can even pass through their digestive system intact. So, whilst corn is safe, generally other vegetables will offer more nutrition and be better for your dog. Green Beans What vegetables are good for Labradors? Green beans are another safe and tasty treat. They contain iron, magnesium, potassium, and a number of good vitamins. However, they have a lot of fiber, so can cause issues if your dog eats too many green beans. Beans and other legumes are also common culprits for canine flatulence! Dogs can eat green beans either raw or cooked. But, they will be softer and easier to digest when they are cooked. Make sure to cut them into smaller, bite-sized pieces so they are less likely to present a choking hazard. Okra Okra is another vegetable that is safe for Labs to eat as an occasional treat. Even the seeds of this vegetable are safe for dogs. Okra has high levels of vitamin C, folate, calcium, and potassium. Uncooked okra can be hard to chew and digest. Cooking it will soften it and make this easier. You should not give your dog fried or pickled okra. Peas What vegetables are good for Labradors? Peas are a popular choice! This vegetable has many variations that are safe for dogs: sugar snap peas, garden peas, snow peas. Generally, if the pods are safe for humans, they are safe for dogs. But, all pea pods have the potential to cause choking in dogs. Peas contain vitamins A, K, and B vitamins. They also contain various minerals. As an occasional snack, peas are a great option for most dogs. Potatoes Cooked, peeled potatoes are safe for dogs to eat. But, raw potatoes, potato skins, and potato sprouts contain a substance called solanine, which is dangerous to dogs. Potatoes are a high-carb vegetable that can be a great energy source. But, too many can lead to weight gain in your Lab. In small amounts this vegetable can be good for Labs. But, never give them too much potato, as Labs are known to gain weight easily. And, never offer raw potatoes, or potato skins and sprouts. Spinach In small amounts, spinach is safe for dogs to eat. It contains vitamins A, B, C, and K, as well as various minerals and antioxidants. It is easier for dogs to chew and digest than hard root vegetables. But, there is a downside. Spinach is high in oxalic acid. In extreme cases, this can cause kidney failure. So, although small amounts of spinach are safe, other vegetables are a better option. Raw sweet potatoes can still be hard to chew and digest though. Too much sweet potato can lead to weight gain. But, sweet potatoes can be a good treat for dogs. Zucchini A zucchini or courgette is another vegetable that is safe for Labradors in small amounts. Zucchini contains fiber, and tons of vitamins and minerals. So, it can be a pretty healthy option for your dog. So, they can be a better treat choice for overweight dogs. But, this vegetable should still only be an occasional treat for your pet. Raw zucchini can be hard for dogs to chew and digest. But, it can be cooked to soften it. Also, chopping it into smaller pieces will help to reduce the risk of choking. For the majority of veggies, cooking will improve their digestibility, and make them less of a choking hazard. But, some cooking methods can also be bad for dogs. Frying vegetables is a less healthy way of cooking them, and the extra calories may cause your Lab to gain weight. Steaming or boiling vegetables is often the best way to cook them. But, you may also want to grill them. The most important preparation tip is to always wash your veggies first. Remove skins if they are bad for dogs. Although it tastes great to us, it can be harmful to our dogs. They will be just as happy, and safer, to have plain veggies as an occasional treat. Everything your dog needs should already be present in their food. So, usually, vegetables are just offered as a treat to your dog. Feeding a New Vegetable We know what vegetables are good for Labradors. But, every time you offer a new veggie to your dog, you should watch them carefully. Only offer a very small amount for the first time. And watch for any gastrointestinal upset. Some dogs could be allergic to certain vegetables or food families. If your dog shows any signs of feeling unwell after eating a new food, speak to your vet. Onions and leeks are toxic to dogs. They should never be offered as a treat, and never included in any of the other foods you give your dog. Store bought mushrooms are generally okay for dogs to eat, but wild mushrooms can be very dangerous. Similarly, very small amounts of kale are okay for dogs. But, many vets recommend against feeding this vegetable. It contains harmful compounds such as calcium oxalate and isothiocyanates. These compounds can lead to kidney problems and gastric irritation. Additionally, any mouldy food should be avoided. Make sure any vegetables you are offering your dog are fresh and washed. Have you ever tried giving your Lab some of the vegetables on this list? A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Below are some Mini Goldendoodle Pups that have been adopted! Thus, it will do good for both you and your pet. First, however, you must pick your future pet to adopt from a good rescue. Rescue should have active and preventative programs to reduce animal killing. The Rescue or Shelter must have an aggressive public education about overpopulation. Further, they should exert efforts to apply differential licensing. Thus, a good rescue should comply by neutering all animals before going to their new homes. All these should always direct towards the well-being of the animals. A clean and comfortable place means the animals are also well-cared. Further, it echoes a skilled, compassionate, and good hygiene and healthcare program. How do I pick a good rescue Golden Retriever? Thus, you may want to do the following in choosing a good Golden Retriever. Observe the dog Most shelters have an observation room for you to do this. If it has none, just do your best to find some quiet place. As soon as the dog gets comfortable, you may start observing. The Golden Retriever should be friendly. It should come at you with no hesitation, sniff you, or even jump for attention. If you see it exhibits exciting behavior, like tail wagging, it means it wants you to pet him. Thus, you need to give it different tones and noise, especially with your voice. Touch the dog with caution Shelter or rescue dogs are usually under stress. Thus, you always need to be cautious when touching it. You may also see how it reacts when you touch it. A Golden Retriever likes getting touched or petted. Thus, if you cautiously touch it and begs for more, it can be a good sign for you. Other things you can note would be tail-wagging and endless sniffing and licking. Play with the dog Since Golden Retrievers are playful by nature, you should also play with the dog. Moreover, you need to take note of how well it interacts as it plays. Golden Retrievers are born to play. Thus, it should get excited upon seeing a ball or any other toys. At other times, excitement means circling and moving enthusiastically. Walk with the dog Golden Retrievers like to walk, so you may want to test that out as well. Observe how it reacts when on a leash or when it sees other dogs, people, or anything on the road. A good Golden Retriever does well with walking. So anything it sees around, like cars, bikes, or even other people and animals, would draw its attention. Let the dog interact with other dogs or animals. It may or may not be possible, but you may ask to observe how the dog interacts with other animals. It will also be necessary if you have other pets at home. Golden Retrievers play and interact well with other pets. Thus, if you have a pet at home, it would be great to take it to the shelter and allow it to play with the dog. They are energized yet loyal, making them a perfect companion for any family. I have been happily married to my high school sweetheart, Robert, for 30 years. We have five beautiful children. Two are married, one is in college and we still have two teens at home. I have always been awe-struck by their beauty, sweet temperament and intelligence. For many years, I truly did not think that it would ever happen, as we were busy raising our family. In addition, we ended up moving from our house and hometown after my husband decided to go back to school later in life. I decided to spend "free" time learning all that I could, so that should the dream become a reality, we would be prepared. I researched Goldens, their behaviors, personalities, needs, history, temperament, health and so on. I learned so much and am still learning, as they each have their very own personality, temperament and needs, just as a human does. We joke now, saying we traded out children for furbabies. After we bought our house and settled in, we began to talk more and more about the possibility of owning a Golden, and even more so, about the possibility of buying a pair to raise and eventually breed. I had been searching long and hard for the ones meant for us. We decided he was the one for us. My husband came home from work at on a Friday, changed his clothes and loaded his truck. He said, "I'm going to get him for you baby. He drove back, stopping overnight in Oklahoma, before heading home on Sunday morning. I was elated to say the least!!! On Saturday, I was able to speak seriously with a breeder in New Mexico. She agreed to meet my older son and I halfway. So, low and behold, Sunday morning, my son, his wife and I all headed to New Mexico, to purchase our first sweet baby girl, "Darlin". We returned just a few short hours after my husband made it home with Duke. Ten tiny golden nuggets were born into our pack. We were hooked! During those precious eight weeks, we decided this was definitely the life for us! We loved every minute of it except maybe for cleanup of the messy mush and potty pickup as they got older! We chose to keep one of our sweet little girls, "Lady", who is our light golden dam. In January, , we found our second, handsome sire, "Bosun", who is a beautiful red Golden from Kentucky. And pretty busy too - We wouldn't have it any other way!

Confidence Protectiveness Husky Golden Retrievers are inclined to enjoy their alone time. They are not prone to having separation anxiety. However, it is not recommended to leave them alone for too long. You could find them trying to escape the house. Because of their nature, it is advisable to have this pet when you have a large backyard. This mixed puppy is known to be friendly and gentle to the family members. They usually get along with all the members and are affectionate to children too. They can be fans of cuddling. Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppies can be excellent watchdogs. With proper training and sufficient bonding with their owners, they are obedient and alert to suspicious people. They are quite protective of the family members when there is a threatening situation. Husky Mixed with Golden Retriever pups tends to have independent thinking. This trait comes from their Husky origin. At times, they may come off as obnoxious and act on their volition. They may be disobedient to your commands. When dealing with this behavior, it is crucial to remember that you need patience in caring for them. This mixed breed dog has a strong prey drive. They tend to chase smaller creatures. Be sure to keep an eye on other small animals such as cats and squirrels. Backyard Breeders Rescue Shelters Professional Breeders If you will spend money, I highly advise buying from professional breeders among these options. These people take good care of the dogs and prevent inbreeding to guarantee minimal health problems. Reliable breeders can provide you with results of genetic testing for the parent dogs and offspring, as well as records of vaccination and other pertinent documents. They also provide health clearances for the parent dogs. However, before buying from professional breeders, you can also consider visiting your local shelters to check if there is an available Golden Retriever Husky puppy and if you can adopt it. There are also rescue-centers that are breed-specific and non-profit. However, it is remarkable that the mixed breed of Golden Retriever and Husky do not shed much, and it is considered part of the low shedders. Aside from the aesthetic purpose of grooming, there are a lot more reasons to accomplish this activity. Developing a more intimate relationship Maintaining the cleanliness and physical health Bringing out the natural oil on the coat Avoid issues like bug infestations Checking anomalies and possible health problems Here is a list of the tools and equipment you will need for grooming this pup: Slicker Brush Cotton Ball Nail Clipper A regular grooming routine is essential in keeping the shiny and healthy coat of your Husky Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A fundamental step in the grooming routine is regular brushing using a slicker brush. Other steps include giving a bath, trimming the nails, and cleaning its ears. The use of a slicker brush over a pin brush is advisable due to its purpose of untangling mats or knots in the fur. Also, it helps in removing debris and loose hair. It can run through the thick layers of the double coat and facilitate effective grooming. Another advantage of this brush is its massaging quality since it has long pins. Massaging the skin of your pup will stimulate the production of essential oils for moisturizing the coat. Also, this will increase the blood circulation and promote health for the dog. This activity should be done at least once a week to decrease the amount of shedding and avoid matting of fur. In brushing the whole coat, you need to brush places of matting and thicker fur more diligently. If your dog has a collar, remove it when brushing the coat, and do not leave out the neck area unkempt. Cutting matted fur should only be done when you cannot brush out the mat. The next step is bathing your pup, especially when it is smelly and dirty. Some people proceed to trim the coat of the puppy before bathing it. It is your discretion if you will follow the steps to the dot. After lathering with shampoo and then rinsing the coat, you can opt to blow-dry the coat. The frequency of bathing will also depend on your decision, based on the smell and sanitary condition of the Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppy. After the bath, you will proceed to brush the coat again. Then, you will initiate the trimming process. In trimming, you should avoid trimming the entire coat. The double coat of your puppy functions as an insulation against the fluctuating weather. It also traps warm air on a cold day and cool air on a hot day. Usually, groomers use clippers for this process. However, you may opt to use thinning shears for cutting parts of the coat. You need to trim the fuzzy hair growth around the edges cleanly. You will trim the fur between the toes next. For cracked dog pads, you can apply Vaseline as a regimen. In trimming the legs, you will cut the unkempt fur to achieve symmetry and balance. The fur on the front of the legs is shorter than that on the back. The hair on the back of the legs should flare out slightly behind the dog. Similar with the legs, trimming the chest and neck should aim to remove the unkempt fur. It should be noted that you will move the thinning shears with the direction of hair growth. After the neck and chest areas, you will trim the fur around the ears. This step will help fend off parasites. Lastly, you will trim the tail. For this step, you will trim the length by tapering the tail, starting from the base to the tip. Part of the grooming process is checking for wax buildup in the ears and signs of an ear infection. You can clean their ears with a cotton ball and a dog-specific ear solution. You should never use a cotton swab for their ears. You can also use a cotton ball with mineral oil or microfiber cloth with mineral oil to remove debris from the eyes. The frequency of this activity depends on the rate of its toenail growth. Long names may break, and cause irregular gait and infection. If you do not have this much time in your hands, you should schedule appointments with trustworthy groomers around your neighborhood. Husky Mixed with Golden Retriever Puppies Health Problems Most of the Husky mixed with Golden Retriever dogs are free of fatal and congenital diseases, primarily because of their enlarged gene pool. Their average life span is 10 to 13 years. One condition you need to prevent is heat stroke. Since this breed has a dense and double coat, they do not tolerate heat as much as they tolerate cold weather. You should protect your puppy from overexposure to the sun and keep it well hydrated. Even if there is a reduced risk for the usual health conditions from the parent breeds, it is important to know the possible diseases your puppy may acquire, especially when it gets older. One these health problems is a cataract, an opacity of the eye lens. When your dog acquires this disease, its eyes will appear cloudy. One of the possible health problems is hip or elbow dysplasia. This is an inheritable disease wherein the thighbone does not attach properly with the hip joint. Elbow dysplasia involves joint laxity due to different growth rates of the bones of the elbow. Vaccinations are weapons against fatal diseases. There is a generally accepted guideline of puppy vaccination. Some of the recommended vaccinations are measles, rabies, and DHPP which is the combination of vaccines for distemper, adenovirus, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. By knowing the possible serious health issues of this mixed pup, you can be more watchful when your pup manifests some warning signs related to these possible conditions. Golden Retriever Mixed with Husky Food Requirements The following factors determine the amount of food you will give to your Golden Retriever mixed with Husky puppy: Age—choose a chow that is age-appropriate; our essential guides to the best puppy food brands and the best senior dry dog food will help you find the right one! Size—depending on the size, some pups will thrive on the best dry dog food for small dogs whereas others will be better off with the best large breed dry dog food Metabolism Level of activity The kind of food recommended for this mixed breed is dry food, preferably one of the brands featured in our best dry dog food guide. Commonly, medium to large dogs is given three to four cups of nutritious dog food, divided into two meals. Just like with human food, there are brands you should avoid at any cost. For your convenience, we singled out some of the worst dry dog food brands. Meanwhile, Golden Retrievers have a big appetite and are at risk for obesity. This classification means that you should provide them with lots of mental and physical stimulation. The duration of physical activity would be enough to maintain its weight and protect them from lifestyle diseases. I recommend walking, running, playing with Frisbee or tennis ball for your Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppy. If the Golden Retriever Husky mix puppy does not get enough physical and mental stimulation, it may exhibit behavioral problems. These problems include inappropriate barking, chewing, and causing property destruction. This breed is intelligent and fast learners. However, their independent side may antagonize your directions if training started late. An effective way to facilitate the training is by initially having short training sessions. To avoid possible destructive behavior that can be traced to their Husky origin, you should employ obedience training and leash training. You need to assert yourself as the leader by having consistency and clarity. A reliable way to do this task is making the puppy wait for its food. This act will establish your role as the provider and keeper of all the resources, such as the treats, food, toys, and other assets. During training, it is possible to encounter mischief and fluctuations in concentration. A way to prevent this situation is keeping the sessions short. However, you should be cautious and never leave your child and the dog alone. This action could aggravate and provoke the pet. Aside from the appropriate training for the dog, you should teach your child to avoid disturbing or playing with the pup when it is eating or sleeping. Golden Retriever mixed with Husky pups are affectionate to families. They have an innate loyal character, and they enjoy being around people. This trait is probably attributable to its Golden Retriever parent. Because they are a cross between two dog breeds, the Goberian can have any mix of characteristics from the parent breeds. They may take on more traits of one parent or have a combination of both. Goberians are a relatively new designer dog breed that tends to be friendly, affectionate, and gentle. Because they are a mixed dog breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. They tend to have a gentle and loyal nature. Goberians tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can get along with other pets in the house, but may need to be introduced and socialized for it if they inherit the Siberian Husky prey drive. The Goberian is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their energy, they are best suited for larger homes with a securely fenced-in yard where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living if they get enough exercise and attention. They tend to prefer cooler climates, but they do well in just about any climate. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. Despite the occasional independent streak, a Goberian thrives on affection and loves to be near their families. Plus, they tend to be easily bored, so they do not tend to do well with long periods of alone time. As with any hybrid dog breed, a Goberian can inherit all, a mix, or none of the potential health problems common to the parent breeds. Talking to the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help ease potential concerns you may have. In general, the Goberian is intelligent and learns quickly, but the overall trainability of them will vary. They can be moderately easy to train or more difficult depending on the mix of characteristics from the two parent breeds. If the Goberian puppy takes more after their Golden Retriever parent, they will be easier to train and eager to please you. However, if they take after their Siberian Husky parent, they will be more difficult to train as they will be more stubborn and independent. Regardless, you will want to plan for puppy training classes, especially if you are a first-time dog owner. Plus, the classes offer opportunities for early socialization, which is also important. Because the Goberian is a mixed dog breed, their coat can come in a variety of coat colors. Their coat tends to be long and dense and may be straight or slightly wavy. They can range from light to moderate shedding year-round and may have two heavier shedding sessions as the seasons change. Bathing is an occasional requirement as needed and many Goberians only need a bath every months. Trimming nails on a monthly basis is usually sufficient. You want to make sure their ears are not trapping moisture, dirt, or debris that could lead to an ear infection. Thankfully, you can help prevent dental disease in your dog by implementing a good dental care plan. You can also supplement your efforts with vet-approved dental hygiene treats and chews, and even a specially-formulated dental care diet. The Goberian is a high-energy dog breed. They require a lot of daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. In addition to daily walks and some playtime, your Goberian is likely to enjoy running with you, going on a hike , and maybe even swimming. A fully-grown Goberian usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Goberian generally lives years. Goberian Puppies for Sale Thanks for visiting our Goberian page! Below, I will mention a number of reasons why your German Shepherd might bite your hands and the signs to look for. It wants attention The reason why it bites your hands could be that it wants your attention. This would be more likely to be the cause if it starts biting your hands when you have not been giving it attention for a while. It would also be more likely if it does it when you had just left it alone for a long time. If that is why it bites your hands then it would help to give it more attention in the form of exercise, training and playing games such as tug of war in addition to training it not to bite your hands. It is teething If it is a puppy then the reason why it bites your hands or arms is likely to be that it is teething. When they are teething their gums will be painful and biting and chewing on things helps to soothe their gums. This is why they tend to bite and chew on things a lot as puppies. Another possible reason could be that German Shepherd puppies explore and interact with the world with their mouths and noses as much as they do with their eyes. As a result, it will bite on your hands a lot because it is interacting with them. If your German Shepherd is still a puppy then it is very important to take the time now to train it not to bite your hands and to behave the way that you want it to. You can do this using the tips mentioned below. You can do so by following the tips given a few sections below. You have inadvertently been reinforcing the behavior It could be the case that you have been inadvertently reinforcing the hand and arm biting. If your method to get it to stop biting your hands and arms is to give it things that it wants such as toys or a treat then it could have learned that biting your hands results in it getting things that it wants. This would be more likely to be the reason if it is older than 6 months old and it is no longer teething. Instead of giving it things that it wants, when it bites your arms or hands, a better option would be to withdraw your attention and to not allow it to bite your arms by leaving the room, for a few minutes, if necessary. Then after waiting for a few moments, you would go back to giving it attention and withdraw your attention again whenever it starts biting. Excitement The reason why your German Shepherd bites your arms and hands could be that it gets excited and it is trying to show its excitement. It would also be more likely if it tends to show other signs of excitement when biting your arms. In this case, something that you could try would be to stop it from biting your arms or hands by standing up and turning around or by leaving the room. You would then reward it when it shows signs of behaving the way that you want it to. Doing this will teach it that biting your arms does not get it what it wants. It is exploring Dogs interact with the environment using their mouths and their noses as much as they do with their eyes and even more so when they are puppies. This would be more likely if it is a puppy. Even if this is the case it will still be important to get it to stop by training it not to bite your arms or hands. Things to consider Before getting your German Shepherd to stop biting your arms and hands it would help to know exactly why it is doing it. Below, I will mention a few particularly helpful things that you can consider. When it started doing it It would help to consider when it started biting your arms and hands. Whereas, if it started to bite them it suddenly it would be more likely that there is something else causing it. Some things to consider would be: If you moved home If someone was aggressive towards it If someone moved away How old your German Shepherd is If your German Shepherd is still young then it would make it much more likely that it bites your arms naturally because it is teething. If it is an adult then it would be more likely that it never learned not to do it. How aggressively it bites your arms and hands It would also help to consider how aggressively your German Shepherd bites your arms and hands. If it does it aggressively by showing its teeth, growling and its hair stands up then it would be a more serious problem and you should seek the advice of a vet or a certified dog behaviorist. When and where it bites your arms Considering when and where it bites your arms and hands would likely help a lot in determining why it does it. If it tends to bite your hands when it is time for it to get a walk then it is likely trying to remind you of that. How to get your German Shepherd to stop biting your arms and hands There are a number of things that you can do about your German Shepherd biting your arms that I will mention below. Train it not to The first method that you can try is positive reinforcement training. This is where you reward the behaviors that you want to see from your German Shepherd so that it learns to give them a positive association. To use it to get it to stop biting, you would: Stand up and prevent it from biting your arms or hands by leaving the room if necessary. Wait a few moments and then go back to giving it attention and then preventing it from biting them again if it starts biting Repeat the above until it learns that biting causes it to lose your attention Reward it with a treat when it does particularly well You can watch the video below to see more on how to get your German Shepherd to stop biting your arms with positive reinforcement training along with more tips. Avoid reinforcing the behavior If your method of getting it to stop biting your arms is to give it things it wants, it could be the case that it has learned to do it more in order to get more rewards. Instead, of rewarding your German Shepherd with things when it starts biting your arms, you can try the positive reinforcement technique mentioned above. Give it other things to chew on If your German Shepherd feels the need to bite things then it would likely help to give it some things that it is ok for it to chew on. Some things that you could give it would be bones, dog chews or toys. Be consistent It is unlikely that you will be able to completely get it to stop biting your arms or hands in one training session. However, you will be able to make larger improvements if you are consistent with it over the course of weeks and months. If you want a happy and obedient German Shepherd, this is one of the best online dog training programs available right now. You can get the first month free using This link. Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links, and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links. Take back control of their behavior using these quick and easy solutions to stop German Shepherd biting that actually works. Even better, have a set of toys that are only used when you want to engage in play with your puppy. Hide these toys in a basket or box after your game of play. This makes them extra special. They are under your control and your dog must give them back to you. Special toys are more fun for your pup to bite than you. When in doubt of what special toy your dog likes, choose from this specially-curated list of what toys German Shepherds love for interactive toy ideas to keep your dog entertained. Say OUCH! When your pup bites you, say OUCH firmly. This simple technique catches the attention of many puppies when done correctly and can train a German Shepherd puppy to not bite you. You could also make a YIP sound instead, just like their little brother and sisters would make a yipping noise when playing too rough. If they continue to bite and nip, say OUCH again and then get up immediately and leave the room for a few moments. You may return to play but keep repeating this simple process until they learn to keep their teeth on their toys. This will only encourage them to continue their unwanted behavior. Use Puppy-Safe Partition Gates Only use pet-safe partition gates that are high enough to prevent your German Shepherd from jumping over. If your pup bites you aggressively when you and your family walk past you, then use an exercise pen or this German Shepherd-sized pet safe partition gate to contain them. Only use pet-safe partition gates that are high enough to prevent and discourage your German Shepherd from jumping over to continue to try and bite you. Use the items during busy times in your home to keep your dog calm and out of areas that might increase their excitement and biting and nipping you. Puppies tend to bite and chew when their teeth are coming in. They do this to relieve the pain and help soothe themselves. Freeze a durable large Kong with their favorite treats and kibble and have them on hand for times when your dog is acting out and biting you. Give them a Kong to gnaw on and bring icy relief to their gums. Plus, chewing has been shown to help relax and calm dogs. Redirections are actions that keep your pup from engaging in unwanted behavior by showing them appropriate behavior. For example: When your dog nips you, find their teething toy to bite instead. When your dog jumps on you to bite your hands or ankles, look around for a Kong to give to them to bite on. Squeaky toys like this toy that continues to squeak , even after a puncture, are ideal to distract your dog from your hand to another object. These toys differ from their special toys mentioned above because these redirection toys are ones you leave out for your pup to chew most of the time. So, be sure to have them nearby! Use Daily Leadership Skills How many times a day do you teach your German Shepherd to listen to you and offer them leadership? Use daily interactions as an effective way of teaching your dog about leadership. Have them sit before you take them for a walk or exiting a door. Ignore them altogether. Only offer them interaction and come back to them when they show you calming behaviors. Our dogs love our attention. And German Shepherds crave it! An overfed dog that is under-exercised may display destructive behaviors because of boredom and lack of energy needs being met. Get up off the couch and go outside for a walk and sniff party. Low impact activities and free-running off-leash running are best. Choose from a list of fun and gentle, age-appropriate German Shepherd puppy exercises to keep your pup healthy and better behaved. Stop roughhousing with your dog before it frustrates them. Use appropriate, puppy-safe toys instead of play sessions. This way, your pup can bite the toy instead of your fingers, hands, or arms. You may also stress out your GSD by engaging them rough of play. For your pup to either keep up with the play or stop you from too rough play, they may bite you! From day one, avoid play that involves mouthing or teeth on the skin. Use toys to provide your dog a way they can bite to release their energy… Without nipping you! And this game is great because it teaches your dog a necessary life skill. Practice the game: multiple times a day for 2 to 3 minutes at a time Your pup learns impulse control during the game and this transfers over to their ability to stop themselves from biting you. Read below for the easy-to-follow directions. If your dog gets too worked up and then bites, then teach them this Rev Up and Cool Down game. After a few running steps and before your pup gets too excited, stop running and walk slowly. Keep moving slowly until your dog also slows down. When you see them slow down, take a few more steps calmly and peacefully. Continue with steps one through three. Each time your dog should slow down sooner and quicker. If your puppy knows any of these basic German Shepherd commands , incorporate those commands to make the training more interesting and fun. The link above will also easily explain how to teach over ten commands! The point of the Rev Up and Cool Down game is to teach them to settle and stay calm without nipping and biting you. You need to keep your pup exercised, mentally stimulated, and show them what calming behavior is. Be fair and understanding. German Shepherd puppies , like all puppies, go through a teething phase, and their biting behavior can continue until they are around 4 to 6 months old when their adult teeth have fully grown in. But how do you get German Shepherd puppies to stop biting, and when should you seek out more help? We dive into everything that you need to know here. German Shepherds are herding dogs, and as such, they love to go after anything that moves. This could be cats, kids, hands, fingers, or just about anything else. The more they get away with it, the more acceptable the behavior seems in the future. Addressing the problem early and consistently is vital. Just like babies need something to chew on when their new teeth are coming in, your German Shepherd needs something too! First, it stops when they get their adult teeth. Second, if you try to redirect them to something that they can chew on, most German Shepherd puppies are receptive. At this time, they should have all their adult teeth, which means no more teething to worry about. But at least you know the root of the problem and can start implementing the necessary strategies to address it. Instead, get them a few chew toys, bones, and other acceptable things to chew on as they teethe. You can also throw a few of these toys in the fridge or freezer to cool them down, and this will offer even more relief for your pup when they need it! While there are plenty of techniques to try, we recommend redirection and positive reinforcement. The method is simple. If and when they start chewing on the toy or other appropriate object, give them praise. German Shepherds love to please their owners, so this is typically an effective way to train your puppy. Therefore, you should have levels of concern. If they are still chewing and nipping at the 9-month mark, you should seek obedience training or talk to a vet to see what you can do. So, get on it early and often, and stick with it! Because with just a little work and dedication you can get your German Shepherd puppy to stop biting in no time. Since puppies lack the dexterity that you and I have, they use their mouths to explore the world around them. By understanding the behavior of biting itself, you can begin to see just how normal biting is in German Shepherd puppies. Just because biting is a normal behavior in a puppy does not mean we should tolerate it or promote it. Since biting is a form of communication for German Shepherd puppies, there are many things our puppies could be trying to say! So why do Shepherd pups bite? Puppies often communicate with their siblings through biting and pawing, especially when they are trying to incite a play session. Your pup may gnaw on your hand as if it were a chew toy, especially when you are a moving target. Puppies play and bite their siblings from the moment they are old enough to do so. This is why the behavior is so common, and why our Shepherd pupswill need to learn how to transition to playing with appropriate chewing options. Not only are our hands and feet tempting enough, but even more so when a puppy has a high prey drive. A prey drive is an ingrained need to chase after moving objects, whether it is appropriate or not. A swinging hand as we walk by can be extremely tempting for a growing pup, causing them to jump up and nip. If it seems like your Shepherd puppy is always biting you when you are in motion, it may be due to their high prey drive! They Are Curious As we mentioned above, German Shepherd puppies use their mouth to explore the world around them. Biting can help them examine and understand an object, and our hands and feet can fall into that category as well! If you catch your puppy gnawing on everything around your home, it may be their curiosity getting the best of them! A dog quickly learns what behavior gets a reaction, causing them to do it over and over again. Even if their bites result in a negative reaction from you, it still counts as attention. They Are Teething Similar to teething babies, a German Shepherd puppy experiences teething pain as well. If your Shepherd pup seems to find relief when chewing on objects, they may be biting you due to teething discomfort. They Are Herding You If your German Shepherd puppy is constantly biting at your ankles, they may be displaying some herding behaviors. German Shepherds are ingrained with a need to work, especially in dogs with a working bloodline. If your German Shepherd is always nipping at your feet, running to your side when you are moving, or showing signs of anxiety or frustration when you are moving around your home; it may be herding behavior. So how can you stop this normal puppy behavior? Redirect The Behavior One of the most effective ways to stop your German Shepherd puppy from biting is by redirecting the behavior. An effective distraction is a wonderful way to end the behavior without punishment, and show them how much fun the alternative to biting can be. The next time your Shepherd pup is displaying undesirable nipping, try to pull out their favorite toy. Since this will need to be a toy that your dog enjoys, be sure to offer them the option that they find most exciting. This can be a Kong toy , rope, bone, or any other chewing option that your dog loves. By doing this each time your Shepherd puppy begins to bite you, they will begin to understand that they would much rather play with an acceptable chew option. Having a variety of chew toys can alleviate their need to bite our hands and feet, and offer them the relief they seek in this uncomfortable transition. There are so many toys created for teething puppies, that it should be easy to fill your home with plenty of appropriate options. One of our favorite chew toys is the Kong Teething Binkie. Any attention can validate the behavior, causing them to make it a habit. This shows them that the behavior is unacceptable, and does not involve any harmful negative reinforcement. Our attention is important to a puppy, and they do not want to be ignored. By showing them that biting will only result in us pulling away, they will learn to ditch the undesirable behavior. Interrupt The Behavior Sometimes a Shepherd puppy needs a sharp and sudden sound to pull them out of a bad habit. By giving a quick interrupter cue ouch, yip, eek , you can pull your puppy away from the action and gain their attention. Because of this, it is so important to offer plenty of mental and physical activities throughout your home. For example, if your puppy nips at strangers each time they walk in the door, it may be best to limit their time around the guest and send them to a separate play area. Once they begin to understand that biting is unacceptable, you can refrain from using their separate play area as often. Similar to what we discussed above about being proactive, a separate play area can help them calm down and collect themselves. Once your German Shepherd puppy begins to mature and understand that biting is unacceptable, they should require less time away. Just as there are effective methods in canine training, there are counterproductive actions as well. Do Not Hit Or Yell Since biting is a normal behavior that puppies must learn to grow out of, it is not productive to hit or yell at your puppy when they bite. Doing this can show them from a young age that interaction with you results in something negative, and can hinder your training process. By using other distractions and training methods when they bite, you can turn every bite into a learning experience for your pup! This can seem like a fun game to your pup, and can actually encourage the behavior. Try your best to go limp when they bite you, and pull your attention away from the pup. By doing this, you show them that this behavior does not offer them any extra fun. Extra attention can validate their undesirable behavior, making it challenging to break. Try your best to refrain from reacting to a bite outside of your interrupter cue, and pull your attention away from your furry friend afterward. Biting is a normal behavior in puppies of all kinds. Puppies begin to bite their siblings from the moment they can move, and will continue this behavior until they learn otherwise. A biting German Shepherd puppy is to be expected, and should not result in any discouragement on your part. As long as you are following the tips we mentioned above, your puppy should shy away from this behavior in no time! Biting in puppies is not usually a sign of aggression. Mild biting is usually a form of play, and should be easily corrected. However, there are some rare cases where biting in German Shepherd puppies is a sign of something more. If your pup is displaying any snarling, growling, ears pinned back, stiff posture, or any other signs of canine aggression, your pup may be biting in reaction to fear or pain. If you are unable to make any progress within a month of implementing the tips we discussed above, it may be time to contact a dog trainer. A trainer can not only help your pup refrain from biting, but offer other obedience training as well. Final Thoughts As you can see, biting is a normal behavior for our beloved German Shepherd puppies. Be sure to review the tips we discussed above on proper canine training, and you can banish puppy biting for good! Hopefully, we will have the answers to all of your questions in this guide. But, all that cuteness quickly disappears when the biting phase starts. Puppy biting is normal in all breeds, including the German Shepherd. And, luckily, we have some great tips and tricks to minimize the painful biting period. In fact, it could have a number of causes. Here are a few of the most common reasons, in a little more detail. Teething One reason why puppies of all breeds may bite is teething. This stage often starts at around 3 or 4 months of age — only a few weeks after your puppy will arrive at their new home. Luckily, it only takes a few months for your puppy to have their full set of adult teeth. So, biting from teething is not permanent. If your puppy is biting or chewing because of teething, you may notice other symptoms like drooling, irritability, and going off their food. Boredom or Getting Attention Bored puppies may learn that biting gets some fun responses from you! Just like barking can. If your puppy has learnt that they can get some attention from you when they bite, they may do it to alleviate boredom. This can explain why puppies concentrate most of their biting on one family member — the person who gives the most fun response. Natural Play Biting is a natural part of puppy play — as much as some owners might not want to hear it! German Shepherd puppies, just like any other breed, will bite whilst they are playing with you or with other dogs. If this behavior continues into adulthood, the biting can be more problematic. Responding to Rough Play Some people like to play with German Shepherd puppies in quite a rough manner. This can include pushing them, or rolling them over. Behaviors like this can make puppies very excitable, and encourage biting during play. Encourage calm play between your family members or friends and your puppy. Herding Instincts The German Shepherd breed has a history as a herding dog. The creator of the breed, Captain Max von Stephanitz, bred the German Shepherd in an attempt to create the ultimate all-round herding breed. This was all the way back in the late s. Although the history of the breed has changed over time, from herding to working dog, their origins remain the same. Many herding dogs are prone to natural chase instincts. They may chase small children or other animals — particularly those that are making lots of noise. And, these herding behaviors can include nipping at heels. Once again, your behavior can minimize biting from this cause. Exploration Another common explanation for young German Shepherd biting is their natural curiosity. And, they may do this partly with their mouths. What you really want to know is, when will it stop? However, you can minimize the period by making a few easy changes to your behavior when biting occurs. The best ways to stop puppy biting and minimize the biting period are training and prevention. This means training your puppy to be gentle with you and other people, and taking away opportunities for your excited puppy to bite humans. You may need to go as far as to completely separate your GSD puppy from small children and people who insist on rough play with puppies. We know that this can only encourage biting. Remove Yourself Calmly If your puppy starts to bite you, during play or any other time, the best solution is to calmly and quietly remove yourself. You can use tools like baby gates to keep your German Shepherd in a puppy-safe room. In fact — your puppy will learn that biting during play or cuddles only results in you leaving, and them ending up on their own! Not only will this help to show your puppy that biting is not an acceptable part of playtime, but it can also help your own sanity to remove yourself from those sharp teeth occasionally. Think About Clothing You should also think about the type of clothing you wear around your puppy. Loose, hanging clothing can be appealing to your puppy, and provide something easy to grip on with their sharp teeth. Wear tight fitting clothing to minimize the number of things your puppy can bite at. Use Distractions If you, or young children in your household, are keen to pet your puppy without being bitten, you should make the most of distractions like treats or toys. You can hold a chew for your puppy to keep their attention and mouth distracted whilst someone pets them! Often, puppy owners only think about biting whilst their puppy is actively gnawing on them. One method is to reward them with treats when you are petting them and they are not biting you. Another is to reward them for calm behavior around the house. This way they learn that acting calmly and letting you touch them without biting will earn them good things! One popular method to stop puppy biting is to squeal, squeak, growl, or make another loud noise. Some people claim that this method replicates natural puppy play and tells your GSD when they are being too rough. For some owners, this may work. If this is the case, making a noise when your puppy bites will act as a reward, and encourage your German Shepherd puppy to bite you even more. This is one reason why puppies biting children is so common. Many children will make lots of noise, especially if a puppy bites them, which can lead to further nipping. This is similar to the method above, if used alone. This is why training has to be done in small stages — first you must teach the puppy what action you want, and then you can give the action a name, or command. Punishment Methods The best methods to stop your puppy from biting involve positive rewards for the behaviors you want. Studies on dog training and behavior have shown that punishment based methods are often associated with an increase of problematic behaviors. Punishing your puppy for biting can lead to distrust and fear from your puppy. The causes of puppy biting that we looked at earlier in this guide apply to all GSD puppies. In fact, they apply to all puppies of any breed. Biting and chewing is a normal puppy behavior, and a normal part of play. As long as you react to this behavior in the right way, it is a period that will pass. The biggest fear for most German Shepherd puppy owners is that their puppy is aggressive when it bites. German Shepherd puppy biting can be accompanied by ferocious growls or snarls. It can even draw blood. So are behaviors like snarling and growling. And, if your puppy is biting hard enough to injure you, they may not have learnt proper bite inhibition yet. This is the process where your puppy learns to be gentle with his teeth on your skin. The positive reward methods we discussed earlier in this guide are the best way to teach your puppy bite inhibition. Remove yourself calmly and quietly whenever your puppy bites. And make sure to reward any calm behavior — including when your puppy lets you pet it without biting. Speak to a Behaviorist If you think your puppy is exhibiting aggressive behaviors, such as guarding their resources, you may want to speak to a behaviorist. They will be able to look at your puppy as an individual case, and analyse their behavior properly. Do Adult German Shepherds Bite? The German Shepherd breed is known for being aggressive in some circumstances — they make popular guard dogs, and are number one candidates for working dog roles in the police and military. Puppies Have you ever reached down to play with a German Shepherd puppy, only to have that adorable little fur-ball pierce your skin with its razor-sharp puppy teeth? When I brought Allie into the family, she was fully in the German Shepherd puppy biting phase — so that first month was tough! Unfortunately, biting is an inevitable phase of puppyhood — it comes with the territory when you decide to be a puppy parent. My goal with this guide is to get you through the biting stage with as few battle scars as possible. Why do German Shepherd Puppies Bite? Up until this time, your puppy was with its littermates, and playtime meant lots of mouthy, nipping fun. Accordingly, this is the only way your GSD knows how to play! A German Shepherd puppy also uses their mouths to explore different things like toys — or hands, ankles, furniture… pretty much anything they can get their mouth around. Your puppy could also be teething, which can increase their mouthy behavior. Just be patient as you work through the German Shepherd puppy biting phase — give your pup time to learn to be gentle when playing or seeking your attention. Nothing is worse than an ankle-biter! I was very lucky not to have this problem with Allie. Why does your German Shepherd puppy target the ankles? Because your GSD is a working dog trying to do its job — herd you around the house like livestock. German Shepherds were originally bred for herding flocks of sheep. Your furry pal may also think heel nipping is just a really fun game. Using a toy as a distraction and keeping your pup active will help nip ankle nipping in the bud! Because she was too busy biting hands! There are lots of reasons why a pup may decide to start biting your hands. For one, good things treats, toys, love, attention come from hands. Also, hands are almost like swinging toys from the perspective of a playful pup — too enticing to pass up! How to Discourage Biting Behavior While the German Shepherd puppy biting phase is a rite of passage, there are some ways you can discourage bad biting behavior without harsh discipline. This is one of the most effective ways to teach your German Shepherd bite inhibition — or how to be gentle with her teeth. Think about when your pup was rolling and playing with their brothers and sisters — if your GSD was too rough, their sibling would let out a yelp. This trick worked great with Allie! Just make sure to be consistent until your pup gets the idea and learns to master the power of her jaws. Puppies will be puppies! Redirect the biting to an appropriate toy. For example, when your fuzzy friend latches onto your ankles, give a little puppy-like yelp, and then whip out a toy and encourage your dog to chew on that instead. Tug-of-war is the perfect game for the puppy biting phase. Socialize your puppy as much as possible. Other dogs are great at teaching your puppy that they playing too rough and biting too hard. Try a deterrent to prevent your dog from chewing or biting. If all else fails, there are lots of products designed to deter your dog from bad biting behavior. How do they work? Well, they taste awful. But if used correctly, they can definitely work. This is still attention — your puppy bites, your puppy gets attention. Otherwise, your pup may see this as a fun new game, kind of like tug-of-war but with your hands or feet as the toy. You want your furball to love playing with you! The goal here is to encourage your German Shepherd to play as much as ever but to play gently. As a pup, Allie thought she should greet everyone by jumping in their face and nipping — kind of like a kiss hello, but with teeth. And as she got bigger, it was harder to control. But trust me, it got old quickly. Be proactive. If I knew someone was coming over, I would put Allie in another room or in her crate. Once our visitor was in the house and the initial excitement had passed, I would let her out. By keeping her from greeting people right when they walked through the door, I could minimize her overzealous behavior. This is a simple command that teaches your dog to stay in her place until you give a release command. This is another way to allow the initial excitement to pass and your German Shepherd to calm down a bit before greeting anyone. Redirect attention to a toy like I talked about earlier. Fold your arms and turn away. Keep turning until your GSD stops jumping, then praise them and use a treat as a reward. What to Do If Biting Becomes Aggressive Although puppy mouthing is normal, there can be cases where biting can signal problems and possibly even aggression. Look for physical differences in your pup. If your puppy is having a moment of aggression, their body may stiffen when snarling, and bites will typically be more painful than during regular play. Also, if your GSD puppy is biting out of fear or frustration, you may need to take action. These types of behavior are not something your pup will just grow out of. While the biting phase will inevitably end, you may find yourself asking the infamous question — when do German Shepherds calm down!? I asked myself and our vet this question more than once! It honestly just depends. Sure, she had her calm moments thanks in part to her training , but she was still very hyper especially in more excitable moments. The type of German Shepherd dog is yet another variable that plays a role in its energy levels. So when do German Shepherds calm down? It really depends on your individual German Shepherd. Final Thoughts Unfortunately, the German Shepherd puppy biting phase is something all GSD puppy owners will go through, but it will pass. Try the tips above to help keep your sanity during this phase. Or any tips to help the rest of us? Please share!
