Rocky stabilizes the track and Rubble secures it with quick-dry cement while Ryder sends Chase up to a rooftop to zipline to the train cars so the passengers can be saved. Chase ends up freezing in a fear of heights and Skye has to save him while Marshall brings his fire truck to the rooftop to rescue the passengers. After the rescue is finished, Ryder advises Chase to take a break, but Chase becomes heartbroken and accuses him of breaking his trust and runs away, only to be captured by Butch and Ruben and taken to an obedience school which Humdinger has turned into a dog pound. While Liberty helps Ryder search for Chase, they discover from a shop owner who knows Liberty that numerous dogs have vanished recently and link it all to Humdinger since he hates dogs. To help save Chase, Liberty deliberately gets herself captured by knocking over a stage piece during a live interview of Humdinger. She is taken to the pound and comforts Chase while telling him that even heroes get scared from time to time before revealing she had Ryder and the rest of the PAW Patrol follow in order to break into the pound and set the other dogs free. As the other pups return to their Adventure City HQ, Ryder takes Chase to an intersection where he had found him many years earlier as a baby and saved him from being hit by an out-of-control car. The grappling hook is caught by the wind and Chase has to ditch his pup-pack in order to save himself from falling. He helps Ryder get unstuck and they escape the building while Skye stops the Cloud Catcher. The PAW Patrol are given the key to Adventure City and Ryder gives Liberty her own pup-tag to make her a true member before they are called out for a rescue by one of the dogs from the pound. With his leadership, Ryder confidently sends the group on their mission to save Adventure City from dog-hating Mayor Humdinger and also having a complicated relationship with Chase. He grew up on the streets of Adventure City, giving him a "strong character arc for the film". His son is a big fan, and he certainly loves to improvise and do lots of takes. We couldn't have had a better cast or a better experience for recording them. He stated about the film's main character, "Chase is a fun, funny, smart, brave, loyal dog. And he's a police dog, and he's sort of the, I don't think he's the head of the team, but he's really on top of things. I think he's very cool under pressure. He's very helpful. So you sort of have to have everything that you're going to be doing for the character come through in your voice, which is hard, but it's also kind of fun. It's a fun challenge, but on the upside, you can show up to work in pajamas, and they won't get mad at you. So that balances out. But I think just trying to really bring emotion into my voice in some of those scenes and to really make it clear that I care about Ryder [Will Brisbin] and my fellow pups on the team. Chase sort of seems like the main character, and so being able to expand and kind of have a character who fails and who has to overcome an obstacle is important. We were able to do more than the TV show time allows. That was really something that we were excited about in terms of telling a story. It felt really important to be doing something that we could share with people at this time as the movie comes out. I think people are coming out of this time of fear and uncertainty, and I think the movie has a lot to say about that. And we really feel proud that hopefully this is going to be one of the first movies that people get to see in theaters again. Brunker had known Barlen since they attended high school, and would make films with him later into their respective careers: "Back before we ever got a chance to make a movie, Bob and I went to Hollywood for the first time, and we actually paid to go on the Paramount lot tour. You know, you get to see behind the gates. We said to each other, wouldn't it be amazing if one day we were making a movie for Paramount? And to be entrusted with such a beloved brand for so many people and to be able to share that with the world, this is a dream come true for us. Their biggest challenge was creating high-quality theatrical animation that didn't lose the style of the series. They were also especially interested in creating action scenes that had more of a realistic quality. New pups often appear in the series for a specific adventure to round out the team, but then are not necessarily in every episode going forward. All the pups in the PAW Patrol are perfect and they're great. Having her experience and seeing her experiencing the film from her point of view, as she relates to the PAW Patrol, is really fun. It was such a gift that she agreed to do it because she really brings the character to life. They also knew when she grow up in Adventure City, it justifies her having a little bit 'thicker' skin and a tougher way of talking. He stated that it is fun to juxtapose with the attitudes that the other people used to from the regular core team of pups. Brunker stated: "For me, it started really young with drawing and being a visual thinker and expressing myself visually. The idea of being able to create almost anything you can imagine in animation is something that I find incredibly attractive.One of the exciting things about being a filmmaker is that your work is seen by hundreds of thousands or millions of people. Animation allows us to work at a scale where we can do something spectacular and really special on screen. So, we wanted to give Skye some really big, exciting moments. We also felt, just in terms of bringing something fresh and new to the team, a new girl pup would be wonderful. Because she's new for the movie, we wanted to make her stand out. We thought that because she was from the city we could make her a little tougher, a little more rough around the edges than the other pups are, and that would bring something fresh to that world as well. According to Brunker, they wanted to redesign some things noticed in the movie: "The back legs of the dogs actually look and function like real dog legs and in the TV show they're kind of more cartoony; just kind of stick legs. We felt it would allow them to move more like real dogs, and if we could push the realism of the movement, then it would make the fact that they're doing these great big rescues and all this heroic stuff even more exciting. And as it turns out, there are still a handful of dedicated breeders producing world class hunting poodles in North America that are finding their way into our duck blinds and wild bird covers. Advertisement History and Development There is much debate surrounding the origin of the standard poodle. Despite the common claim of it being French, most of the evidence points to Germany. But their real utility began when the matchlock saw popular use in and later with the invention of the flintlock. Both firearms revolutionized duck shooting for market hunters and the like. In this new era of water and gun, the poodle thrived, spreading across Europe in the following centuries. They were swallowed up by England channel hunters in the early s and were favored for a long time by market hunters across the North and Baltic sea. The hunting poodle faced challenges from the beginning in North America. The American Kennel Club AKC unfavorably placed the poodle in the non-sporting group from the start, where it still remains. The Canadian Kennel Club CKC also grouped standard poodles into the non-sporting group in , after only briefly having them in the sporting group. This was no doubt in part due to the introduction of the much smaller, non-sporting, miniature poodle. Modern Hunting Poodles Many of the same qualities that have allowed standard poodles to dominate competitive obedience events for decades are also traits that distinguish them as a gun dog. Poodles are recognized to be one of the smartest of all K-9 breeds, and that intelligence has serious benefits in the field. Size and Considerations The standard hunting poodle is around pounds for males and pounds for females, standing inches at the shoulder. With this tall, athletic frame, they are light-footed and capable of great endurance in the field. They have keen noses, and their natural intelligence can nourish some great cover identification and bird-finding ability with proper exposure. They are easy keepers around the home. They are very family-oriented and want to be close to their handler. Poodles are completely hypoallergenic and do not shed, but their coat does need the appropriate trim and some maintenance. If you want to consider a standard poodle for your next gun dog, make sure to go see the parents work yourself. You should also watch how the dog handles. Ensure that the breeder is being responsible in health checks and conformation. Observe the dog around the home. Watch its temperament around children. I'll admit to getting an occasional few minutes of entertainment listening to some dog show handler who has never hunted in his life explain how those fancy trims protect the dog when retrieving in water. In fact, those who hunt their poodles clip them down pretty close to the skin all over, so all that hair is no problem in either water or cover. Advertisement Third, poodles have a reputation as circus dogs, trick dogs, great entertainers--dogs that do humiliating things no self-respecting retriever would even consider. Truth is, the poodle simply has more talent--more smarts, if you will--than most other breeds, so they can do much more than "just" hunt. They love to be trained, love to entertain and love to please, so they will do anything the boss really wants them to do, whether in the circus ring or duck blind. From the Middle Ages, Europeans have always considered the standard poodle a hunting dog. According to Canadian breed historian Emily Cain, Europeans categorized it as a spaniel. However, the French breed name, caniche, comes from chien canard, or "duck dog," so they have also classified it a retriever. In , when CKC recognized the toy poodle, they put both sizes into their non-sporting group. Since , when UKC initiated their retriever hunt tests, several standard poodles have earned the highest titles awarded in those tests. Hunters all over the country use them successfully in hunting, and run them just as effectively in various retriever hunt tests. However, most hunting poodles stand much taller, with males 24 to 26 inches and females 22 to 24 inches. Such males weigh 45 to 60 pounds; such females weigh 40 to 50 pounds. These dogs are tall and lithe rather than short and stocky. Being lean and muscular, they have boundless energy and great stamina. Being highly athletic whence comes their trick-dog image , they move with attractive grace and style. Now for the typical hunter's No. The coat may be any of several solid colors, most commonly black, gray, brown, apricot and white. Notably, this coat doesn't shed. That makes it every homemaker's favorite among canine coats. No dog hairs on the rug, sofa, bed or wherever. Then, too, this coat is hypoallergenic, which makes it the choice of dog lovers who are allergic to breeds that shed. Since it doesn't shed, if left untrimmed the coat will grow continuously. When it gets long enough, the fur braids itself into long cords that drag on the floor. Thus, every poodle must be trimmed regularly, which is a time-consuming job, even for a professional groomer, and an expensive job for amateurs who choose not to trim their own poodles. But--and for hunters this is a most important but--no law, rule or directive requires a hunter to keep his poodle in those outlandish dog show trims that make the dog look like a sissified male lion. Au contraire, the hunter may, can and should keep his poodle's coat trimmed down to somewhere around one inch long all over. At that length it curls tightly up against the skin. Although trimming a poodle this way takes time and effort, it requires neither tonsorial skill nor artistic talent. Of course, it must be done frequently, say once a month. Thusly trimmed, the coat protects the dog in all but bone-chilling water. It will also protect him from upland briars and brambles. It does pick up burrs, but the boss can easily pluck them out with a dog comb or rake. To help slide them out easily, some hunters first spray a little cooking oil on each burr. Several years ago, a lady told me about being grabbed by a man as she got into her car in a shopping mall parking lot. Her poodle came out of the car, attacked the man and frightened him off. Another woman told me that when a houseguest once accidentally wandered into her daughter's bedroom, her poodle grabbed the intruder's skirt and tugged on it to lead the woman out of that room. When protecting their owners, poodles seem to have good judgment, applying no more force than necessary. Incidentally, both of these aforementioned poodles were also hunters that had earned advanced hunting test titles. The typical poodle loves to learn to do new things. He loves performing, especially before an appreciative audience, and he's tireless when working. However, he learns quickly and is therefore easily bored, much like the brightest human student in class. Thus repetitive drills, like those for the three parts of the blind retrieve lining, stopping and casting , can bring out the creativity in a bored poodle. After mastering, say, a particular line, instead of repeating it perfectly over and over, he may experiment and try new things, which is counter-productive in drills. For this reason, the trainer must be more creative than his dog. He must drill him in ways that don't seem repetitive, like mixing in shot flyers or fun dummies between repetitions of a given drill. The typical poodle also needs a training program that is predominantly positive. He wants to please, so if the boss 'splains what he wants well enough, the pooch will need few corrections. Expressed appreciation for a job well done works wonders with a poodle. An over-corrected poodle shuts down, quits cold and may not revive for some time. He is a house dog, not a kennel dog. Living in the house allows him to bond strongly with the boss, and figure the boss out from the canine perspective. Since he wants to please the boss so much, this understanding can make him seem like a mind reader in the field. He needs that to develop properly in the field. He can hunt waterfowl in any of the various ways: from a shore blind, from a boat, from a field blind and in jump-shooting. He may not take to water as naturally as a Chesapeake Bay retriever, but he can learn to love it, especially if given an early start as a puppy. Neither has any problem body-slamming an irate, crippled Canada goose and bringing it back alive. This took training, but they took to it quite easily. They like to please.
