So, I make sure that each individual pup is given outstanding care. How do I do this? I began with hand raising each one of my pups the first 3 weeks of its life. What do I mean by hand raise my pup? It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. If she has a favorite blanket or an old shirt of yours that she loves to snuggle up with, use those. But you will also need additional towels and blankets ready for the little pups after birth. Ensuring they are all warm and cozy after the birth will be, first and foremost. A pile of German Shepherd puppies bundled up with mom surrounded by comfort blankets is also just really adorable. Heating Pad or Heat Lamp Newborn puppies are unable to regulate their body temperature. The new mama understands this and will do her best to keep her pups warm using her body temperature and cuddling them close. But having a heating pad or lamp ready to go will help keep the space warm for the newborns. If you opt for a heating pad, you can place it underneath the towels and blankets where the puppies lie. It also has loads of temperature settings and timer settings, giving you plenty of options. If you opt for a lamp, be sure it is far enough away not to be too hot and burn the puppies. Place your hand underneath it to gauge where it gives a subtle warmth without causing your hand to feel hot. I prefer a heating pad as it just seems the safer option. Whelping Box and Mat To prepare for whelping, a whelping box will be required for the German Shepherd puppies to snuggle up in after the birth while the mom is recovering. You can purchase a large basket or make one yourself using a large cardboard box. German Shepherd puppies, on average, weigh around 0. As we know, German Shepherds seem to go from adorable 2-pound pups to majestic pound protectors in the blink of an eye. So, knowing how much they weighed after birth and monitoring their weight gain throughout their infancy is an essential step to proper health. There is no need to take them directly from mom and plop them onto a scale straight away. Give them time. But have it ready to take their weights within the first day or so. Gloves, Sterilized Scissors, Thread, and Antiseptic Solution Typically, the mom will cut the umbilical cord herself by biting through it. Once tied off, ensure the end of the cord is cleaned with antiseptic. Cleanliness during this is critical, so a pair of medical gloves and a clean workspace are essential. Soft Travel Crate Hopefully, the birth goes smoothly, and there is no need to take your German Shepherd to the vet during it. But if there is an emergency or you have any concerns, always call your vet or nearest animal hospital immediately. Have the crate by the door with plenty of cozy blankets and familiar smells ready to go if you need to transport your GSD. This is never an ideal situation, so it should be avoided whenever possible, but under emergency circumstances, you may need an impromptu trip to the vet. Pro Tip! Use the buddy system. If you need to take your German Shepherd to the vet during birth, it will help to have someone with you. Consider asking a few close friends or relatives. They can drive while you sit in the back with your girl to comfort her. This is going to be a scary moment for your German Shepherd, and she will appreciate being able to have you by her side. Ensure the Environment is Clean and Comforting You will take much of this care during the prep stage. You will be placing clean towels down, ensuring everything is sterilized and ready for the momentous occasion. But during the birth itself, you will want to help maintain that environment. Here are a few things to consider that will help you make this a comfortable environment for your German Shepherd: Have familiar sights and smells around, such as toys, soft clothing, and blankets that she likes. A big part of the preparation is to ensure that everything is ready for the new mom and pups once she is done. She is going to be exhausted, needing lots of rest and love. And the newborns will be adorable little helpless creatures that need their canine mom and their human mom or dad too! Making sure they all stay home, clean, and healthy is the number one priority after birth. During your discussions with your vet, this should be something that is covered. Your vet will offer specifics if there are particular health concerns for your German Shepherd. But otherwise, they will have general guidelines to keep the new family safe and sound. Once your German Shepherd has had enough time to recuperate and seems to be doing well after the last birth, take her outside to urinate and get some fresh air. She may not want to, as she wants to stay with her newborns, but encourage her to go outside for a quick pee and move around. Next, try to get her to drink some water and see if she has an appetite. At this point, all the puppies should be warm and snuggled in the whelping box. Let Mom join them and begin nursing them. They are going to be hungry, sleepy, and hungry again. The Humane Society of United States, which publishes the annual report, said the purpose is to warn consumers about common problems in puppy mills. What's most terrifying, the Humane Society said, is the same families in central Ohio keep changing ownership and kennel names to avoid the risk of being repeat offenders. US Adam Yoder of Sugarcreek failed three consecutive inspections for neglecting to obtain veterinary care. Yoder, who owns Artisan Creek, also known as Sunrise Kennel, was issued multiple violations including failure to fully address the issue of 12 dogs needing dental assistance. During a Nov. And, in some instances, allowing Miller to perform teeth extraction, according to the report The USDA found Miller, a Millersburg dog breeder, to be practicing veterinary medicine without a license, which is a violation of state law. Yoder's kennel is just one example of violators assembled by USDA researchers, who comb through federal and state inspections for citations and instances of animal suffering. The Humane Society notes the report is not a list of the worst operations, as many puppy mills are not inspected at all and thus operated in secrecy. Ohio comes in second on the list of most puppy mills behind Missouri. Nine in Ohio are consistently found to be non-compliant, placing them on the Horrible Hundred list. Other Ohio facilities and operators cited in the report include: Cheryl Kinder of East Palestine was found twice last year to be non-compliant after multiple violations were found during inspections in September and October. According to the report, cages with inadequate space - in some cases, not even room to stand upright - stacked at least three high were observed by inspectors. Some dogs did not have water, and seven were in need of dental treatment. Green Meadow Farm in Apple Creek for issues include two short-haired breeds housed outside without veterinary approval, excessive food waste and flies around the dogs' enclosures, lack of emergency and nutrition plans, and a poodle need of veterinary treatment. Kennel owner Norman Yoder failed to take a dog to a vet as instructed during a previous inspection. Ivan Barkman, owner of Lone Pine Kennel in Baltic, was cited for repeat violation for a puppy who was coughing and raspy, a violation for a dog with a severe ear infection with discharge was draining down her face. Inspectors noted the dog had the problem for at least five months without being treated by a veterinarian. Michael Troyer, owner of Spring Side Kennel in Baltic, failed to obtain dental treatment for dogs even after the inspector required it and neglecting to take the animals to a veterinarian for professional care. Troyer took them to another licensee who is not a veterinarian. Adrian Mast of Dundee failed state inspections due to more than 18 different violations - including an underweight male Irish setter, a female Irish setter with mange and improperly preforming his own veterinary procedures. The inspector also noted unsafe conditions and a variety of other problems. Ruth Miller's Country Acres Bulldogs in Dundee was cited in September for a number of issues, including five dogs who had eye disorders left untreated. Inspectors also noted Miller offers AKC puppies for sale on its website and also offers to ship puppies sight-unseen to buyers, although it does not appear Miller has a USDA license. Alvin Herschberger of Patriot was cited in September for a puppy who couldn't walk and wasn't receiving proper treatment. The inspector also noted two other puppies in the litter had died from unknown causes eight days after birth. Other issues noted included 18 dogs housed outside with no protection from the elements, dogs who only had metal barrels as shelter, and self-feeders with open tops. As of March, Herschberger seems to have dropped the former USDA license number under his name, but has applied for a new license under Hilltop Puppies. Inspectors found a limping Maltese, a bulldog with an inflamed neck, and other dogs with notable skin abrasions while visiting Ivan Miller in Sugarcreek in October. In addition, they found a number of dogs were on unsafe wire flooring which didn't provide solid flooring to allow them to move freely. On a subsequent visit in January, inspectors found excessive feces accumulation in five outdoor enclosures housing a total of 14 adult dogs. The report indicates the facility had about dogs and puppies on the property during the January inspection. There are way to many of these Amish "breeders" that do not take care of their animals. I've been to auctions where they bring puppies to young to be away from their mothers to sell.
