Their intelligence is one of their predominant features, and is often showcased during obedience training. These dogs have tremendous problem-solving capabilities that make them ideal for competitions. On the other hand, this same intelligence makes for an easily bored pup. They need mental stimulation, like challenging games and toys , to keep their busy minds occupied. The Toy Poodle may also be suspicious of strangers and slow to warm up to new people. This dog breed can adapt to a wide range of living situations due to their small size. As a matter of fact, they have trouble dealing with any kind of alone time. As such, the Toy Poodle is an excellent companion animal for people who love a little company. There are a few health conditions that Toy Poodles are more susceptible to than other dog breeds. With regular visits to the veterinarian, many of these potential health concerns can be comfortably managed. Owners typically have an easy time during obedience training with Toy Poodles. Their intelligence often hastens the training process. However, they can present destructive tendencies when left to their own devices for too long. Toy Poodles have famously low-shedding coats. They lack undercoats, so their shedding is minimal. Their fur is hypoallergenic and mats rather than sheds. These pups will only need to be groomed to prevent matting and increase shine. Usually, brushing your Toy Poodle once or twice a week and grooming every six weeks is sufficient. As a small dog breed, they are more prone to developing dental disease so good dental care is important. Poodles are an active breed in general, and Toy Poodles in specific are just as active. After a few laps around the kitchen, the Toy Poodle will tire out and happily sit by their owners during daily activities. The Toy Poodle stands at a mighty inches at the shoulder. Their weight ranges from pounds and usually averages around 8 pounds. Toy Poodles usually live 12 — 15 years. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. And have fun! We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. And have fun! This comes at no extra cost to you. As a new Golden Retriever puppy owner, you may be wondering about when important puppy milestones happen, such as: When do they lose their puppy teeth? When do they stop growing? When do they finally stop biting? When do they sleep through the night? These puppy behavior stages and developmental milestones will differ from individual to individual, but this timeline can give you a general understanding of what to expect with your puppy. Day 1: Puppy is born You could also call this the best day ever. After carrying the pups for about 9 weeks , mom is ready to give birth! The average litter size for Golden Retrievers is 8. Their eyesight is very limited, and their soon-to-be-brown eyes are sometimes blue when they first open them. And as you know or will soon find out , they are very sharp. The puppy kibble is soaked in water, mashed up, and introduced to the pups. They work up to eating solid food about four times per day while still nursing from their mother. Because puppies need to complete weaning, most breeders wait until the puppies are 8 weeks to 12 weeks old before they send their pups home with their new owners. You can also start training them at this age the best way to stop bad habits is to not let them start! Getting a Golden Retriever Puppy? Download the Potty Training Cheat Sheet here! The biting phase is one of the toughest behavior stages for puppy owners. Golden Retriever puppies lose their baby teeth at around 4 months of age. Sometimes he would be chewing and then start to play with something on the floor. Most of the time when that would happen we would find a tooth laying there. This depends on the gender and your individual dog. And this is definitely a conversation to have with your vet, as spaying or neutering your Golden Retriever too young can have adverse health effects. Females are typically inches tall, while males are inches tall. It becomes their undercoat. At one and a half years old, Goldens have typically grown out their full coat. Related article:. Week 7 — The great puppy escape artists! Week 8 — Our golden puppies head to their new homes. Have you ever had a litter of Golden Retriever puppies? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Arizona? Many pet owners, especially those who are the lucky recipients of a golden retriever's love, make sure to honor their birthdays as well. And what are some ideas on how to throw a golden retriever birthday party? Imagination is the key. A sense of humor goes a long way. But most of all, recognizing your golden retriever's special day is much like planning a human birthday party! The most important thing to do when planning a party for your golden retriever and his or her golden retrievergie friends, is to find a secure area. Area where DOGS won't run the risk of getting away from owners, lost or confused. Don't invite every friend in your Golden retriever birthday party. Don't invite every friend and neighbor who has a DOG to your Golden retriever birthday party. But invite only the DOGS that your own pooch is familiar with. No sense in testing fate, so keep it simple and golden retrievergie-friendly for the special birthday boy or girl. Remember to keep the size of your birthday area in mind when inviting other DOGS as well as their owners to your party. Other ideas of throwing a golden retriever birthday party encompass decorations and food to be served at this special event. When decorating with lights, crepe paper or ribbons, streamers or balloons, keep such items away from DOGS that may want to eat them. Some DOGS love to pop balloons. So you may want to keep a few extra balloons blown up for the games portion of the party. But make sure that you retrieve plastic discards as soon as possible. This will prevent DOGS from eating or chewing on plastic or rubber parts and strings. Remove items that you don't want damaged before the golden retriever birthday party. Remember, as with human children, DOGS can make a mess, so make sure you remove items that you don't want damaged from the 'play area' before the golden retriever birthday party. When DOGS start playing, everything in their path is fair game. So take a look through the area beforehand to save yourself frustration or grief. Remember, this was your idea, so don't leave anything to chance. This is a special day for your golden retriever and guests. So no one should be punished if anything gets broken. Guests may even take turns with Frisbees and other activities in birthday golden retriever party. DOGS are easy to entertain, and guests may even take turns with Frisbees, tennis balls and other activities for the birthday golden retriever party. In summertime, a small wading pool provides plenty of amusing entertainment for DOGS and people alike. But be forewarned that when they shake, you may get drenched. Dont forget the golden retriever birthday cake. The birthday golden retriever and guests, as well as human counterparts, are likely to be hungry, so make sure you have food for both available. If you wish, bake your golden retriever birthday cake made of various, DOG friendly ingredients. But remember to avoid chocolate Chocolate is poisonous for Golden retriever dogs. And keep plenty of water on hand for the thirsty participants. No matter what, have fun, make sure that your golden retriever and guests are safe, and enjoy the celebration! We are located in the country just outside of Johnston, SC. Our home is built on 55 acres with a 2. We are surrounded by open fields and woods; the perfect playground for a Labrador retriever. We have been involved with Labradors since when we purchased our first Labrador and our love for this incredible breed has grown significantly with every Labrador that has been part of our life. Our first, Jessie, a black Labrador was gentle and loving. Our second, Jamie, a high spirited yellow Labrador always seemed to get into some sort of trouble. Our third and first male dog, Jake was a gentle giant weighing in at lbs and was a creamy white color. Whether Jake was on the dove field, tracking a deer, fishing in the pond or just playing with his squeaky toys, he was the all around hunting companion and family member who will forever be remembered in our hearts. Having a well rounded and valued member of the family ready for the field as a hunting companion or living an active lifestyle in the home is our 1 goal at Dry Pond Retrievers. This is accomplished by breeding for intelligence, train-ability, physical soundness and having a natural marking ability, and good all around attitude that can do the work and then come back home to be a valued member of the family. I had indeed receved more information about Amigo, the puppy I was interested in. The email asked me to answer the following questions about my lifestyle and how it would affect the dog. I received another email describing how the delivery processed worked. We set up a delivery time and I provided her with my home address. All of this took place on Saturday, April 11, , through texting. I asked if I could have a current picture of Amigo and if I could have a vet update. I am quite aware of the complaint. However all what is explained is true but you also have to understand that I have been in this business for over 9 years. I have had situation's where fraudsters contacted my and follow up the process just like she did, just to take documents of my current papers and vet records to use them to carry out fraudulent activities. I was also out of town to deliver one of my pugs to his new home since it was 5 hours drive. I always expect my buyers to ask for al documents and prove of existence before signing the contract. It is clearly stated in my contact and in my email to explain how delivery process works that you fully understand the process before providing your information's for contract agreement to be prepared. If a buyers reads and understand the process, then sign the contract and when I provide information's for buyer to make payment and you start asking more and more question's, I will not respond because you just would have done that before signing contract and requesting for address to make payment. Also I did told her to always read and understand all process before signing and after signing the contract, all you need to do is respect terms in the contract and not to keep asking question's when I have buyers requesting to make instant payment for the pet you are asking. Also I searched for pet stores in her area and asked her to head to one of them and purchase a pet from there since she will be asking all sort of lerm questions after contract signing and receiving address for payment. She should never contact me again to purchase from me because I only sell to serious buyers. However, I am disappointed and frustrated that Brayan at Pug Puppy Ranch feels it necessary to place blame on me as the customer when all I was trying to do was ask questions; whether or not I asked them before or after I signed a contract seems arbitrary to me. I appreciate the Revdex. If I could give 0 stars I would. .Bailey was born in February and we bought him from Little Rascals in May .He was very poorly from the minute we brought him home and that first week he was fighting for his life. He had kennel cough that had turned into pneumonia. After a lot of tablets and love he pulled through and we thought we now had a healthy puppy. He was then referred to a specialist who performed an MRI scan and spinal tap. Bailey has a fused spine with degenerating discs and compression of the spinal cord. They told us it was not possible to operate as the compression was in so many places. They said it was likely that it would get to the point where he becomes lame. At the same time as this he also had to have a nares resection [link] and soft palate surgery to help him breathe better. More recently, Bailey has been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease which he is likely to have had since a puppy. Bailey now takes 4 different tablets twice a day and will probably have to have these for the rest of his life. I am so grateful that he came to us and is living a happy life no thanks to Little Rascals. I have emailed them many times and they simply do not care. All they care about is money and do not give a damn about the welfare of their dogs! I realise that there are many people who have got healthy puppies from Little Rascals. However, the vast majority have had severely poorly pups from them with a few even dying within weeks of bringing them home. Date of experience: October 26, Reply from Little Rascals Pets Oct 26, "All they care about is money and do not give a damn about the welfare of their dogs" Please read your response via email dated 18th Feb below: "Hello, Further to my previous email, I would appreciate a response as soon as possible. Regards, Miss Emily Moreton" We had previously offer the following resolutions: 1. To return Bailey and we will continue with all treatment required as per our terms and conditions under our vets. To return Bailey and we will give you a full refund for Bailey including the two vet bills up to the 12th May .You are welcome to use whatever vet you choose as the owner of the puppy at your cost. An offer to make you financial right for the difference of the insurance claim would be refunded upon proof of claim. As yet we have still not had any court proceedings against us and it would seem you cannot provide full evidence to support your claim. All of our puppies get their 1st shots, are dewormed and are vet checked. Our goal is to raise happy and healthy puppies for our customers. Until you pick up your new puppy you can rest easy knowing your pet is being well taken care of. We even have horses, calves and we also raise steers. Yes, we love our animals! Our whole family has always enjoyed loving and caring for animals. A lot of people ask how Twin Oaks Puppies got started raising dogs. Early on, we wanted a dog that would be easy to take care of. Someone suggested Boston Terriers and we are so glad they did. We started out with one Boston Terrier puppy. And through the years we have added several more. We also raise Pug puppies. When deciding on a second dog, we knew we wanted another even temperament breed much like the Boston Terrier. We wanted a breed that would make a wonderful family dog. Like the Boston Terrier, Pugs make amazing family dogs. Both breeds are ideal for just about any family. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. When Hawk joined our family, at 8 weeks of age, he would retrieve paint rollers nonstop. This progressed through retrieving bumpers and joining our field training group when he was 4 months old. It quickly became apparent that he not only enjoyed retrieving, but he was also a phenomenal marker. He ran his only hunt test at 6 months of age, and passed the test. We continued to train hard and Jammed our first Derby at 11 months and followed that with a 2nd place in his second Derby at 12 months. Hawk displays the classic Golden personality and has never met a dog or person he didn't like. Since their Mother's name is Topbrass High Adventure and their father has earned such high accomplishments at such a young age, we felt it was fitting to look to aim HIGH in our litter theme and we hope that this quote fits this litter in the years ahead, "high achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation" as they seek to write their own unique stories. Generals and Admirals of the U. Please note what we call your puppy for the first 8 weeks has NO bearing whatsoever on your puppy's forever call name - that is you and your family's decision. We hope you enjoy the many puppy pictures to come, as well as, our color naming creatively behind this most anticipated litter, as much as, we do! We have started a wait list and are currently taking deposits. Our puppies also come with a few of our favorite training tools and toys! For additional information please contact Haley Glick at .Essentially a failure of the lysosome system that recycles amino acids, or proteins, in cells, NCL occurs in Golden Retrievers due to a mutation in the CLN5 gene. This results in the accumulation of ceroid lipofuscin — an unusual material that glows fluorescent yellow when examined under a microscope — in the brain, retina and other tissues. Affected dogs develop normally until the storage material builds up and interferes with functioning. Golden Retrievers typically show signs around 1 to 2 years of age. This autosomal recessive condition occurs when the sire and dam are carriers and produce a litter in which an average of 25 percent of puppies are affected. He reached out to the owners of puppies he bred that were potentially affected. More than dogs were tested quickly when the news came out. Mertens learned about NCL carriers weaving through the Topbrass bloodline. The Outstanding Sire and second all-time top Golden Retriever derby dog has many desirable working traits. It is pure luck that the bitches that have been bred to him were all clear of the NCL genetic defect. The mutation is found in several other field lines, as well as in the pedigrees of show-bred Golden Retrievers. In most breeds, except Tibetan Terriers, Border Collies and American Bulldogs, it appears to be a rare disease, though it is likely that many cases of neurological disease in dogs are not recognized as potential NCLs NCLs also occur in people and include the fatal Batten disease that affects children. Symptoms of NCLs in people include visual impairment, declining cognitive and motor functions, seizures, brain atrophy, and early death. Among animal species, NCLs are most frequently reported in dogs, though one or more cases have been reported in cats, sheep, cattle, ducks, ferrets, goats, horses, monkeys, parrots, and pigs. It began in the summer of when a breeder submitted 18 DNA samples of three generations of a Golden Retriever family after producing two litters of nine puppies from the same healthy parents, in which four dogs from the first litter showed signs of a progressive neurological disease. The published study in which the disease-causing mutation was reported appeared in the June-July issue of Molecular Genetics and Metabolism. Katz says. Anxiety, constant circling, tremors, aggression, ataxia incoordination , seizures, and visual impairment were among the abnormalities that became apparent at 15 months of age or older. Katz explains. Two of the affected littermates from the three-generation family became progressively worse until they were euthanized at 30 to 31 months of age due to the severity of their disease. Two additional dogs from the same litter had similar progressive neurological signs. Postmortem evaluation of the brain and retinal tissues confirmed that the disorder was a form of NCL. In this case, two of those DNA molecules are knocked out, causing a frameshift to the left and premature termination codon. As a result, when the two DNA molecules are deleted, the amino acid sequence is altered and the protein does not function as it should. The fragments of protein then build up in the lysosome, which is where the name lysosomal storage disease comes. Over time, either the buildup of the degraded protein or the lack of the recycled amino acids interferes within the function of the cells and progressive disease results. As the disease progresses, so does the severity of clinical signs. This is what happened to Lexi. Her condition became progressively worse until she was euthanized in November .Her littermate sister, Gracie, also was euthanized. Although NCL is a challenging disease for an owner or breeder to face, with the discovery of the gene mutation and development of the NCL genetic test for Golden Retrievers, selective breeding can ensure affected dogs are not produced. Molecular Genetics and Metabolism. Progressive Signs of NCL in Golden Retrievers 15 Months of Age: Early neurological signs include loss of coordination causing dogs to bump into objects, difficulty climbing stairs, anxiety, agitation, and long periods of constant pacing and circling. Affected dogs may lose the ability to recognize or respond to previously learned commands and behaviors, have mild seizure-like activity, such as fly biting, or snapping at flies that are not there, and gum smacking. Visual impairment in bright and dim light becomes profound. In later stages, affected dogs may become aggressive toward people. Having a recessive inheritance pattern, NCL occurs in dogs in which both the sire and dam are asymptomatic carriers. A carrier-to-carrier breeding produces progeny in which, on average, 25 percent are affected, 50 percent are carriers, and 25 percent are clear. The majority, 3,, were found to be clear. There were carriers, and 27 dogs were affected. This makes it very important to know the genetic status of dogs being bred so two carriers are not bred to each other, creating a risk for affected puppies. Hunters looking for an intelligent, shorter-coated retriever that will hunt from dark to dark need to research field-bred goldens. By Tony J. Peterson With a charming, eager-to-please personality and looks to match, the golden retriever has plenty to offer. Yet its skyrocketing popularity is the reason golden retrievers have become victims of their own demand. It's also why those in search of a hard-working golden need to be very careful when choosing a pup for hunting purposes. Advertisement A Rich History Among the many reasons for the golden retriever's popularity is the rich history of the breed, which, according to the American Kennel Club, dates back to the early s. Europe is responsible for a good number of our current sporting breeds including goldens, which came into being in England and Scotland well over years ago. During that time, a medium-sized sporting breed was an asset for obtaining food both in the waterfowl and upland gamebird worlds. Throughout the s the breed became even more desirable, and in it was recognized by the AKC. Goldens soon became one of the go-to breeds for many hunters and folks looking to run a dog in an obedience or field trial. They also started showing up in television shows, as well as print and television advertisements, and one needs only look at a single golden to understand why. Very few breeds are as photogenic or as easy to work with as goldens, which contributed further to their popularity. This also led to division in the breed, with an ever-increasing portion of the litters born each year to less stringent standards. Show dogs with their long flowing coats became much more common and they were bred to field-bred dogs as well as other show dogs. Advertisement It has been a couple of decades since the breed hit its high-water mark and since then we've witnessed a decline in the health and hunting-drive of the breed overall. That's not to say that excellent pedigrees don't exist, because they do. They just aren't as easy to locate as a run-of-the-mill, mystery-bred golden. If there is one person that understands this more than most, it's Jackie Mertens. Mertens has owned and operated Topbrass Retrievers since and is undoubtedly one of the most respected names in the world of golden retrievers. Every once in a while, I get to meet someone who was put on this earth to work with dogs, and Mertens fits that category. From her schoolgirl days, Mertens knew she'd work with animals, and as soon as she could she got her first golden. That dog, Ch. Mertens recalls, however, that she almost lost Torch before it all started. Advertisement "Torch had a lot of desire, she was fearless, and she was a good producer — and she did it all on three legs after getting caught in a fox trap," Mertens recalls. She had survived by eating snow and pawing up any plants she could reach. Since then, Mertens has been at the forefront of field-bred goldens, and when someone wants a great housedog, a great hunter — or both — they go to her. And it's all about the breeding. Hunters looking for a waterfowl and upland dog will often steer toward Labs for obvious reasons, but the right golden will fill the role just fine. A field-bred golden with a proper water introduction will bring ducks to hand all day long. They look a bit different and they will exhibit the right drive and retrieving desire. Now, I hear people say all of the time that their dog was the best ever, but they are comparing it to maybe a few other dogs they've owned. To have the best chance of getting a truly good hunting dog, it's field-bred or nothing. There are so many issues that can come up with poor breeding, that it's a process to ensure a healthy litter these days. For us that means looking at all health clearances like hips and elbows, of course, but other things. We use a canine ophthalmologist for eye clearances, a canine cardiologist for heart clearances, and also conduct a litany of DNA tests to ensure proper breeding. Having gone through the heartbreak of losing a golden to kidney failure when she was only six years old, I am particularly sensitive to proper health clearances. All breeds can suffer unfortunate medical issues, but goldens are exceptionally prone to them given the amount of unchecked breeding. Another golden retriever expert I asked to weigh in on this issue is Theresa Bilava, who operates Platte River Retrievers with her son Nick. She started with goldens as a child and has been raising and breeding them for 22 years. Having over two decades of experience devoted to the breed has given Bilava a unique perspective on the current state of the golden retriever, and she was more than willing to offer advice to anyone looking for a pup. Like Mertens, Bilava makes sure all of her Platte River dogs are health checked in all manners. Now people think they can pick up any golden puppy and it will hunt, but that's not the case. With us, we're breeding for athletes, not models. Our dogs are field-bred, and quite frankly, a lot of the people that contact me about getting a dog don't even know what a field-bred dog is. We want dogs that want to play the game and that will have the right temperament. All of our dogs will be companion dogs, and some will be used for agility or therapy, but many of them end up being upland and waterfowl hunters as well. As long as they are well-bred they'll become people-pleasers that will take to training and look to make you happy. A good sign of a dog that is working for you not for itself is if the dog checks back often and looks you in the eye. Goldens are well known for this trait, especially in the field where it matters most. They aren't wired the same as a Lab that might be able to run the same drill times in a row. They are different, and have to be trained differently. When I asked him why he chose to hunt with goldens he responded by saying, "The golden is a gentleman's dog. He will give you percent if you are fair to him. And he can turn it on and turn it off, which is something other breeds struggle with. When a good golden is asked to hunt, he'll give you his all. When the hunt is over, he'll transition back into that lovable housedog. They need to be introduced to water properly, and if you do it wrong it's like pushing a rope — it doesn't work. Goldens will work for you, but if you lose your cool they'll shut down. It has to be fun for them, and you've got to work with their intelligence by keeping it interesting and positive. They respond to teaching, not pressure. Finding a well-bred golden puppy that has all of its health clearances and is a true hunting dog is a different story. The right pedigree takes time to locate, and it will cost more than a run-of-the-mill dog. The upside? You'll get an amazing hunting and family dog. Nick Bilava has spent plenty of time hunting South Dakota roosters for himself and for clients while he was guiding, but his dogs can do much more than hunt ringnecks. They can hunt anything and handle any new hunting situation provided you've got them prepared. I hunt doves with my dogs, ducks, everything. They can do it all, and will, if you ask them with respect. When my pheasant opportunities disappeared with the loss of habitat, we switched gears to ruffed grouse, doves and eventually ducks. And just for fun, I threw in shed antler hunting to see how she'd do. As long as my golden got to retrieve something for me and earn a little praise, everything was just fine. This willingness to please is without question one of the greatest reasons to own this breed. Nick Bilava got into golden retrievers in no small part because his mother, Theresa, has been breeding field-bred goldens for years. Together they operate Platte River Retrievers, where they focus on producing a few litters each year that are bred to be smart, athletic and will hunt everything they are asked to hunt. For the hunter looking to have a rock star in the field and a good-looking house pet all in one dog, they are the ideal choice provided they come from a breeding program that has focused on health concerns and strong hunting instincts. Picking A Golden Puppy When shopping for that perfect golden pup, here are some things that prospective owners should be mindful of. That's the going rate, and it is worth it for the peace of mind you'll have from getting a truly high-quality, healthy pup. Your job doesn't end with research and writing a check, however. Trust Your Breeder After that, it's a matter of being honest with your breeder and allowing him or her to pick the right dog for you. Jackie Mertens stressed this by saying, "I don't let people pick their puppy. I pick it for them. Some people don't like this, but I've already spent seven weeks with the puppies and have watched how they act, and interact, so I know their personalities well. Too many people want to pick their own puppy, and they often take the first dog to run up to them but that is often a bad deal because that puppy might be the most dominant in the litter. It's better to put your faith in the pedigree and the breeder to match you up with the best bet out of a litter. You won't regret it. More Articles From How-To.

mountain bulldog puppies for sale - We are a family owned business with the personal touch not offered at most kennels. We started several years ago buying our first female to start our business. German Lines vs American Lines Before entering into the business we spent years researching the different bloodlines of German Shepherds. Working with different police departments assisted us in our search for the quality of German Shepherds we wanted to breed. Throughout the years of owning and working with German Shepherds we have been around both the German bloodlines and the American bloodlines. In our experience the American lines do not have the same qualifications offered by the German lines. To read about the difference of both breeds go to German lines vs American lines. For more information about German titles and testing in our pedigrees go to German Terminology and German Breed Standards. Working in law enforcement allows us to work with several police agencies during K-9 operations. Because of our line of work we have seen first hand the difference between the working lines and the show lines. It is very important for someone to understand the difference, because there is a vast difference. The working lines are exceptional at what they are bred to do. They have extremely high energy which makes them better for law enforcement when searching hours for a suspect or sniffing large areas for drugs. A working dog has to have something to do at all times or they will get bored. That kind of energy does not work well for a family and in a home atmosphere. West German Show Line Dogs What I searched for is a line of German Shepherds that would be naturally protective, not afraid of any situation, proven to be the best generation after generation and still have the calmness to be good with children. We found that dog in the West German Show Lines. To receive a top show rating of either a V or VA the German Shepherd is required to be excellent in all fields. They cannot be distracted or show any aggression towards the judge, stud dogs or female dogs around them, but be ready to bite when asked too. For any dog to accomplish all these things is remarkable. To read and understand more about what is required for each phase of testing go to German titles and ratings. They relax all day on the couch, happy and healthy. When they are ready to birth the puppies we take the whelping box into our den where we whelp the puppies. If it is winter we have a nice cozy fire. Either my husband or I are with them throughout the entire delivery. We assist the mother as needed. We make sure the puppies are getting plenty of milk. Then we will move them to the puppy room in our house. I get up throughout the night to check on the mother and the puppies to make sure everyone is doing okay. The mother and the puppies will stay in the house until they are weaned at six weeks old. Then I either move the mother or the puppies to the kennel. Our puppies are allowed to run around our house when they are old enough to walk. We are always giving the puppies a lot of attention. I believe in imprinting the puppies from the time they are born. We also allow our customers to come visit during the first 8 weeks to build a bond with the puppies and to help with socialization of the puppies. If we have more than one litter in the house we have our office set up to be able to put another whelping box in it. We will whelp every litter the same. We try to only have two litters at a time. If we have three, which is very seldom, I can fix a place in my bathroom. Usually the third litter is in my bathroom for only a week. Then I move them to one of the other two rooms. I teach all my dogs in the house to respect the mother's privacy. A lot of times I have a mother and a grandmother in the house at the same time. Bailey and Tara were mother and daughter. After a few days passed, Bailey got a little agitated with Tara and grunted at her. Our home is usually full of either children or dogs most the time both. In we bought property in Oklahoma surrounded by the National Forest 35 miles from Arkansas. Our Dogs and Puppies have plenty room to run and explore. They also go with us in the spring time trail riding behind our Oklahoma property, since there are miles of forest managed trails right out our back door. Between our property in Texas and Oklahoma the dogs have plenty of room to run, play and get plenty of excecise. The dogs love both places, but Oklahoma is our vacation spot for both us and the dogs. Now she sleeps on my bed and when she gets up there are about 5 hairs. This stuff is amazing!!!!!!!!!!! Just ordered a year supply. No more vacuuming 5 times a day, im now vacuuming once a day! Lifespan Sociability Buying any dog requires commitment. But when that dog is as big as a Boxane, there are a few extra things you need to consider. For starters, these dogs need a great deal of outdoor space. Ideally, that should be in the form of a large and secure yard in which they can run about freely. From a financial perspective, you should also consider whether you can afford to keep a dog this size. Boxanes eat a large amount of food, and not only does the cost of their food add up, but everything they need, including things like vaccinations and holiday boarding, will cost more than it would be for a smaller dog. As is typical with hybrid breeds, particularly those with parent dogs that have significant physical differences, the appearance of your puppy can vary substantially, depending upon which genes are most dominant. This means that fully grown Boxanes from the same litter may have a weight range of between 60 and pounds. Neither the Great Dane nor the Boxer has a reputation for being an excessive barker, a trait that they have passed on to the Boxane. This is not to say that they are not vocal dogs, just that they will usually vocalize with a range of grumbles, growls, and whines. Aggression toward other dogs is a trait that the Boxane can sometimes inherit from their Great Dane parent and is an issue that if left unchecked, can be particularly problematic given their size. Fortunately, this aggressive behavior can be prevented or at least greatly reduced through early socialization, ongoing regular exposure to other dogs, and training. To start with, due to their size, they need a family that lives in a house with a large yard. The Boxane is not at all suitable for life in an apartment. They are typically quite good with children. However, they are excitable dogs, and when they start running and jumping about the place, they can unintentionally knock a small child over and injure them. For this reason, the Boxane is not the best dog to get when you have toddlers and young children. They require a great deal of exercise each day, and you need to be prepared to spend several hours a day taking them out for a long walk or run. You should also be prepared for them to take over and destroy your yard. As any owner of a big dog will tell you, it is next to impossible to maintain a nicely manicured lawn when you have a large dog romping around on it every day. We recommend that a Boxane should be fed high-quality, size-specific dog food, such as Royal Canin Large Adult Dry Dog Food , which will meet all their daily nutritional requirements. Being large dogs, Boxanes can be susceptible to joint problems later in their life, and these can be more of a problem when a dog is overweight. On average, your Boxane will require at least 60—90 minutes of vigorous exercise each day. In addition to taking them for a walk or run around the neighborhood, you may want to consider activities such as hiking or trail running , as exploring new areas and different routes is a great way to prevent boredom from setting in. They do, however, have a bit of a stubborn streak. So, unless you find a way to keep their training fun and interesting, you may have trouble getting your dog to go along with the program. As mentioned earlier, it is imperative that in addition to obedience training, you take the time to socialize your Boxane while they are young. It is particularly important that your dog gets comfortable meeting and playing with new dogs while still a puppy, to prevent them from showing aggression toward other dogs later in life. They have short straight hair that will not knot or tangle, so they can typically get away with being brushed once every couple of weeks. Regular bathing is not required either, which given the size of the Boxane, is fortunate. As with all dogs, your Boxane will need to have their nails clipped every four to six weeks and will also benefit from having their teeth brushed with canine toothpaste regularly. A post shared by Mack and Cheese mack. But apart from this, they are generally quite healthy dogs. Of course, there are a few conditions to which Boxanes are susceptible. Some can be avoided with health screening and careful breeding. Diseases to watch out for include: Minor Conditions. Overview The Boxane is an exuberant and goofy hybrid breed that is an absolute joy as a family pet. This spirited and cheerful mixed breed will play tirelessly and strive to be at the center of everthing As a parent breed the Great Dane brings an unwavering desire to be very close to their owners if not on their laps if they can manage it. To understand dogs fully requires an understanding of where they have come from. So here follows a history of both parent breeds. The Boxer adds even more liveliness and exuberance to the character of the Boxane What are the history and origins of the Great Dane Boxer Mix? In order to truly understand the qualities and character of a classic or hybrid breed it is essential to have an idea of their original purpose and development. So here follows an account of the fascinating history surrounding both the Great Dane and the Boxer. These dogs had the role of holding down large prey, such as boars and deer, once the sight-hounds had identified and slowed their victim down. Boxers are intelligent, loyal and devoted companions. Many Boxer owners claim that once you own a Boxer you will be smitten with the breed and never think about owning another dog. They are particularly celebrated for their clownish antics and sense of fun during a very prolonged puppy-hood. But that is not to say that this dog does not also have a serious side. Added into the mix is the tenacity and drive of the Terrier influence. The Boxer is a very energetic and athletic dog with a high prey drive. This means that you can expect this dynamic dog to boisterously chase and run around. Some of the breed will go after small animals on a walk and this combined with an inquisitive nature means that they love to explore. This means recall should be an important feature of the training regime. This is also a very active breed who need a good outdoor space to play in and once they have fully grown thrive on long walks and plenty of exercise. Like the Boxer , when fully grown, they are able to walk for many miles tirelessly. So the Great Dane Boxer mix will require plenty of exercise, but will offer an excellent companion to any hikers or long distance walkers out there. The Great Dane could suitably be described as the biggest lapdog on the planet and have been known to follow their humans absolutely everywhere. The Boxer is another dog who absolutely thrives on human company and will want to constantly play with his human family. The Great Dane tends to have a mellow temperament making them an excellent founding dog when combined with more excitable breeds. This tends to lead to a hybrid dog still full of vivacity and playfulness but easier to manage and less excitable and his is certainly true of the Boxer Great Dane Mix. These colossal canines will constantly be out for a good time, remaining puppy-like play-mates for most of their adulthood. They will also offer an excellent guardian of the family and the home. Other linked hybrid breeds: Cane Corso Boxer Mix. Although both loyal dogs with a great sense of fun, the Boxer is a very busy, inquisitive and high energy dog who never tires of playing, exploring and performing various clownish antics. The Great Dane has a more mellow temperament than the Boxer , although they are still playful and also have a cheeky sense of humor. The Boxer also has the reputation for being a little more alert than the Great Dane as well as being quicker to train. But if it is fun and excitement you are looking for then look no further than the wonderful combination of breeds neatly packaged in the adorable Boxane. What is an interesting fact about the Boxane? The Boxane is a hybrid whose parent breeds have a lot in common. Both the Great Dane and the Boxer also share common heritage in that the Mastiff is thought to have influenced both breeds. As with all mixed breeds, the Boxane could favor either parent breed in a number of ways. This dog, like both parent breeds, will have a lean muscularity as well as an athletic build with a well defined, tucked up stomach and flanks. The back will be straight and the tapering tail carried high. The bluntness of the short muzzle of Boxer is likely to be softened by the influence of the Great Dane which is deeper and more squared. There is a possibility of some slight furrowing or wrinkles on the forehead through the Boxer influence. The Boxane is a very physically impressive dog with a kind inquisitive expression. The Great Dane not only casts a large shadow, but literally becomes a a large shadow as it follows its owners around. The Boxer influence will do little to mitigate this as they are also a people-oriented breed and extremely loyal. Nevertheless this hybrid breed is going to need a very active and experienced owner willing to spend time ensuring this dog is socialized and fully entertained with extensive walking and lots of interactive play. So you can certainly expect a Boxer Great Dane Mix to be an exuberant and spirited. In addition both parent breeds absolutely dote on their owners and are intensely loyal as well as being extremely protective. But it must be conceded that the Boxer has inherited some of the stubbornness of the Bulldog. Added to this, the Boxer , like the Great Dane, is a sensitive dog. This means it will require consistent , patient training which is firm but gentle and based around positive reinforcement. With socialization and training the Boxane will be a confident and obedient dog who is both a good companion in the home, and a well-behaved canine citizen outside of the home. But the Great Dane influence is likely to temper this stubbornness, and both dog breeds thrive on praise and are very eager to please. You can therefore expect a Boxer Great Dane Mix to be a devoted companion who will generally be biddable. It is important, however, to make sure any training is governed by an approach based around positive reinforcement to ensure the dog is happy, confident and a joy outside of the house. But this dog will want to play with everything that moves including children and any other pets. This makes early socialization absolutely imperative to avoid accidents and maintain relaxed and problem-free relationships between this huge hound and other canine, human and even feline members of the family. The Boxer is people-oriented but will still be protective of its family when strangers are in close proximity of its human pack. It will also bark an alarm if anyone approaches the house adding an edge to the more mellow and accepting temperament of the Great Dane. Also both of these dogs are powerful and swift, so the deep resounding bark of the this dog will quickly followed by this lithe and muscular guardian. But you can be certain that with socialization in place any welcome visitors will have absolutely nothing to fear. The Boxane is likely to be gregarious and willing to play with other dogs, although due to the Boxer influence there may be the occasional episode of dominant behaviour or aggression with a few dogs. Nevertheless early socialization will generally ensure that this huge hound will enjoy play-time with its canine pals without incident. This dog will be able to live with smaller animals and other dogs but if you are bringing a puppy home to an established dog this should be done in a carefully structured way as outlined in introducing a puppy to an older dog. The Boxer Great Dane Mix, when fully grown, also provides the ideal dog for those who enjoy hiking and outdoor pursuits as both parent breeds are known to enjoy very long walks with ample opportunity to run around off the leash. If there is one thing that you can absolutely guarantee with the Great Dane Boxer Mix is that it is certainly going to require plenty of exercise including at least one long walk a day of around 2 hours. This dog will also make a good jogging companion for the more active owners. This could also include around 20 minutes of obedience training each day. The Boxane is a dog who will benefit from a good run of the leash each day. But ensure that the Great Dane Boxer Mix is trained in recall from as early age as possible to ensure that they are consistently manageable and obedient outside. Remember also that any Great Dane hybrid dog requires special consideration in terms of the planning of exercise for puppies and young dogs that are still growing. This means that exercise should initially be compartmentalized into little and often rather than one walk in the very early years of the dog. This is because over-exercise can potentially damage bones, ligament and joints in the Great Dane and potentially also in this dog. If you are concerned regarding this then it is highly advised that you discuss this with a vet alongside feeding and other aspects of fundamental care for this huge hybrid. For an experienced owner who is also very active the Great Dane Boxer Mix makes an absolutely wonderful family pet. Although it must be in a household which has the time to invest in training and exercise. This dog will be intensely playful and will demand lots of interactive play. But they are very likely to have a fantastic personally as fun-loving dogs who are adorably clownish. The Boxane will be fiercely protective of the family and very eager to please. This will be good and patient with children, although all play must be carefully supervised. Also with the correct socialization this dog will most likely get on with any smaller pets in the household. The ideal owner will be active, patient and willing to put in time to socialize and train this dog. Also any experience with large and powerful breeds would be hugely beneficial. Due to its size, power and high energy levels this dog is best suited to a home environment where they have human company for most of the day. If it is essential to leave this dog for any period of time regularly then it is absolutely imperative to offer training for separation anxiety at an early stage. Like all Great Dane hybrids, this dog will suffer without strong canine leadership. Any less experienced dog owners should prioritize attendance at puppy training classes in order to support their dog feeling happy and secure. The Great Dane Boxer Mix has very minimal grooming requirements. The short and sleek coat is only likely to require a weekly brushing. But remember that this should be done daily in periods of hot weather to remove dead hair in order to keep this dog comfortably cool. This will be particularly true if the hybrid breed favors the Boxer as the muzzle will be shorter which will slightly impair natural cooling. Please click here for other tips on keeping your dog safe in hot weather. Ensure that as part of any grooming routine the ears are carefully cleaned in order to avoid infection and nails are clipped. Some Boxanes may inherit furrows on the face from the Boxer. If so, be be sure to clean around the face carefully particularly after eating as dogs may find food particles lingering in the jowls and any wrinkling on the face. This combination of breeds means a dog that is both physically large, and also absolutely full of play and energy. This is therefore a dog that is going to need space both inside and outside the house. It is ideally suited to a rural area or a home which has a good-sized, secure area outside in which to burn off its almost inexhaustible supplies of energy and willingness to play. In terms of size and activity levels this dog is not recommended for apartment living. What is the lifespan of the Boxane? The lifespan of Great Danes is sadly only between 6 to 8 years.
