German Shepherds tend to be strong-willed, intelligent, playful, and loyal. To get a full idea of what to expect in your puppy, be sure to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the cross and check out the mother dog in-person to get a general idea about size and temperament. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. Although GSDs are highly intelligent, pick up on things quickly, and train fairly easily, they can be stubborn with an independent streak. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. You will still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an understanding of what to expect during the training process. Professional grooming a few times a year and the occasional bath is also recommended. Regardless of the coat type, your German Shepherd Mix will need to have their nails trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly. Not every dog will allow you to do this, so try to get a tooth brushing session in at least a few times a week to reduce tartar buildup. This will help prevent dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, it will help cut down on bad breath! German Shepherds tend to have a high activity level. They were bred to run, herd, guard, and protect, so they are used to working and having a job to do. They are definitely not a lazy dog breed! Be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. You will still want to go in prepared for a high energy dog with the understanding that your German Shepherd Mix puppy may have an activity level closer to the other breed in the cross. If both are high energy dogs breeds, expect to end up with a high energy dog. A German Shepherd is a large dog breed that generally weighs between 55 and 90 pounds. With a good work ethic, playful demeanor, and a goofy face, this dog breed ranks among the top 10 in the USA for a while now. Their nobility and elegance came to focus after the originally working breed Boxer became unemployed during the early 19th century. The breed name derives from the way they defend themselves with their paws while playing. It really appears as the dog spars with the front paws. There is no doubt one might be tempted to get bring home one of these loving fellas. The growth in dogs has much to say about their health and potential — but how? While growing up dogs that suffer from some diseases might stagnate more than others. Boxers are a medium to large dog breed and are pretty safe from the usual bone and muscle disorders in larger dogs. However, hip dysplasia remains one of the most common issues. Reputable breeders will let you meet the parents and give you contacts from owners of puppies born in previous litters. Most Boxer puppies will correspond just fine to the ranges mentioned for their age. It is super important to not rush the growing process. Dogs that are overweight can experience problems later on in life that might have been avoided by maintaining an appropriate body condition. Moreover, the veterinarian can have the pup checked for possible health conditions causing the slow growth. Photo by otsphoto on Shutterstock Even with late bloomers, there is no reason to worry. Some dogs experience growing episodes sooner than others. The same rules apply to puppies that grow too fast. Damage due to wrong feeding can be avoided by using high-quality premium food and sticking to the recommendations according to weight and age on the labels. Never miss out on consulting your vet on the topic first — they will be glad to guide you through it! Boxer Growth Stages Until they reach adulthood, Boxers go through 3 growth stages. The general difference between the growth stages is how fast the puppy grows during the period and how they appear in posture and body condition. The first stage is from birth until they are 2 weeks of age. After the second week, the growth rate slows down. Most breeders wean the puppies off around the 4th-5th week. At 18 months of age, you can probably introduce your companion as a fully developed, curious, and independent adult Boxer. Boxer puppies have somewhere between 2. At the end of the first stage, they can reach around 4. At 1 month of age, their stuffed muscle figure comes at about 5. By the time they are 16 weeks old, males weigh lbs .Male Boxers are expected to have approximately lbs .In the next six months, the growth slows down to about lbs 0. Male Boxers should weigh around lbs kg by the time they reach 6 months of age. Female boxer puppies are expected to have lbs kg when they are half a year old. Since the Boxer qualifies as a medium to large breed, it takes longer for them to reach their full-sized version compared to other smaller breeds. There are exceptions when Boxers complete the growth at 20, even 24 months. Female Boxers that are done growing up weigh approximately lbs kg and stand .Their male counterparts have between 60 and 70 lbs kg and are 23 to 25 inches cm tall. In the meantime provide quality food, regular exercise, and maintain regular veterinary check-ups to ensure their well-being. As with all other dog breeds, some adult Boxers will be smaller than the standard dimensions of the breed. On the other hand, there is a handful of those that are larger than the standard too. Genetics is the most probable cause for this. Rarely do Boxers end up being smaller than the rest due to low production of the growth hormone. Luckily growth hormone problems in Boxers are very rare and other breeds such as the Miniature Pinscher, Spitz, or Karelian Bear Dog are more prone to the condition. Growth defects in dogs can appear due to Dwarfism Achondroplasia. Minor deformities can be surgically corrected, but again with a dubious prognosis. In Conclusion Understanding the growth chart will help you understand what role nutrition, diet, and exercise plays and adjust accordingly. Getting rid of excess weight or ruling out health issues is something you and your vet can work on together. As a general rule, expect your Boxer to grow until they are 18 to 24 months old. Keep in mind that this range is an estimate, so there are always exceptions. Image Source: Canva How big should a 6-month-old Boxer be? A 6-month-old male Boxer should weigh around 41 to 48 pounds, while a 6-month-old female Boxer will weigh about 39 to 44 pounds. Pro Tip: Check out this downloadable new puppy checklist covering topics like vaccination schedules, setting up the home for a new puppy, teething, veterinary visits, and more! How much bigger will my Boxer get? There are several ways to estimate how much bigger your Boxer will grow. If your Boxer is less than two years old, they are likely still growing. Some Boxers stop growing closer to 18 months, but many Boxers will continue to fill out in weight and body size until they are two years old. A puppy will rarely be larger than either parent, so this can give you a clearer idea of their maximum size. Do their paws look oversized compared to their legs and the rest of their body? This is a strong sign that your Boxer is still growing and filling out! What is the size of a full-grown Boxer? According to the American Kennel Club Official Boxer Standards , a full-grown male Boxer will stand around 23 to 25 inches tall, while a female Boxer will stand about .A fully grown male Boxer will weigh around 60 to 70 pounds, with their female counterpart will weigh about 55 to 65 pounds. As with many things, prevention is always better than treatment. Taking your Boxer to regular veterinary appointments is one of the best things you can do for their health, along with consistent love and care at home. One of the best things you can do at home is brush your dog's teeth regularly to help prevent painful periodontal disease and avoid pricey dental treatments in the future. Periodontal disease can cause bad breath and oral pain for your pup and may require your Boxer to have a dental cleaning or tooth extractions under anesthesia at some point in their lives if not attended to at home. Keeping your Boxer at a healthy weight is crucial for their longevity, overall health, and happiness. If your Boxer is overweight, talk to your veterinarian to develop a weight loss strategy so that you can get them back on track. Consult with your veterinarian about the ideal food and exercise for your Boxer. Like all dogs, Boxers have certain conditions that they are prone to. Boxers are a purebred dog breed prone to heart problems, like cardiomyopathy, heart valve narrowing, and congenital heart defects. Brachycephalic syndrome increases their risk of respiratory distress, allergies, heatstroke, and sinus problems. Regular veterinarian appointments are crucial in finding and treating illness early to give your Boxer the healthiest and longest life possible. Unfortunately, veterinary bills can be costly with many treatments for emergencies and illnesses, such as heart problems, being thousands of dollars to treat. When surveyed, .The financial safety net provided by pet insurance is why pet insurance is worth it for many pet parents. Keep in mind that even healthy behaviors, like exercise, can be overdone. Consult with your veterinarian about how much exercise is prudent. Medium to large-sized dogs that are still growing may suffer from joint damage if they are overexercised. Make a plan with your veterinarian today to provide your Boxer with the ideal amount of exercise to keep them lean, healthy, and happy. With a strong, powerful body and plenty of energy, this breed can be quite active at times. The issue at hand however, is what to do if a Boxer is hyperactive and won't calm down. Let's dive into this topic and discuss all relevant issues. When a young puppy is not running around, he is recovering from acting hyper and napping so that he can get up and do it again. And this is because despite his size, the 12 month or 18 months old is still indeed a pup. He has the mentality of a pup and his actions reflect that. So you have a rather large dog of 45 to 55 pounds .The size of Boxers can fool owners. Since Boxers almost but not quite reach their adult weight by 18 months but have puppy-like tendencies for some time beyond that, owners can sometimes expect too much from a puppy that is beginning to take on the appearance of an adult. Stages of activity levels to expect with Boxers: 8 weeks to 4 months old: This is the 'new' puppy stage. Boxer puppies can be very hyper but owners often do not need to help them calm down because they'll plop down when they tire out, which is quite often. At this age, a Boxer can be running around one moment and asleep with his head in the food dish the next. This is a time of exploring and curiosity… the energy level is like a roller-coaster. You'll want to have a solid schedule in place so that a hyper Boxer puppy has more structure to his day. A Boxer will still get a lot of joy from playing and often craves tons of attention from his owners… this is a good thing… that interaction is a big part of proper bonding and instilling proper hierarchy that will lead to a well-behaved dog. Daytime naps are much less at this point, so having a Boxer awake most of the day can lend to feeling as if the dog is always on the go… or at least is restless if you are not available to get him outside and on the go! By this time, all commands should have been taught and the dog should have a good schedule of releasing his energy in burst of exercise… and if this has not been done or if the Boxer is home alone much of the day and has no release, they'll be some behavioral consequences of that. Generally Boxer dogs begin to calm down by the age of 2 years old, though it is a gradual process, as you'll note from above. Issues can arise if these elements are not in place, however it is never too late to take charge and we will go over some steps owners can take to reel in a hyper Boxer dog. Most will indeed act like adults, but this does not mean that you will have a perfectly behaved dog that can handle any situation with grace and refinement. Boxers are as intelligent as a human toddler , hyper aware of their environment and subject to acting hyper or in most cases very restless if healthy methods of releasing energy are not available or encouraged. The adult may have trouble with separation anxiety or may become agitated or overly clingy if he is not offered both physical and mental workouts. He relaxes quite a bit but can still be engaged to take walks, explore and even take on new challenges. Problems of restlessness can arise if the dog has health issues that interfere with his sleeping or if some disrupts his environment. How to Deal with a Hyper Boxer and Calm Him Down The best method to calm a puppy or dog down is to have a routine that preemptively combats hyperactivity before it reaches an uncontrollable level. It is much easier to avoid this state of frenzied behavior than it is to reverse it. Do keep in mind that very young puppies up to about 4 months old cannot really be reined in; they are all over the map and will have short energy bursts followed by deep sleep; it's a temporary stage that will gradually even out. Here are some ways to encourage a calm demeanor: 1 Have the proper confinement method. The confinement method that you use to keep him in one spot will have a big impact on his behavior. If the area is too small, a Boxer can develop overwhelming feelings of being pent up and this can make him very hyper and agitated. It's very stressful for a dog of any age to be confined to a small space. This breed also can have some claustrophobic issues more than others, so this only adds to the issue. When made to stay in a tiny area with not enough room to move around, there are often issues of developing restlessness and anxiety. It can be difficult to calm a Boxer down after he has been let out. If a dog is stressed that he is alone or even if he is just bored, quite a bit of damage can occur as he roams the house, looking for an outlet. Puppies do best with a sectioned off area of a room; the kitchen or living room is often best as they should be close to their humans and not feel as if they are too isolated. Another option for Boxer puppies is an appropriately sized indoor canine playpen. Older Boxer dogs that are housebroken often do best with one room, not having full access to the house. And for those with separation anxiety, being alone in a large empty house if often more stressful than being alone in just one room that has all the needed supplies to keep him safe, happy, fed and occupied. One of the biggest mistakes that owners make is taking a Boxer out once he shows signs of needing to get outside. If you're sitting on the couch, binge watching Games of Thrones and after 3 shows you realize that your Boxer is acting hyper he really doesn't have much interest in whether or not Daenerys will ever actually get Drogon under control and then you say, "Oh, my Boxer could probably use a walk", it's often too late. At that point, the walk will only help a Boxer release the frustration that built up as opposed to the walk being an outlet for a normal level of activity requirements. He will be a bit calmer, but not as calm as he would be had you taken him out in advance of the building agitation. So, the best thing that you can do is to set up a schedule of when you'll engage with your Boxer dog and really try to not miss any sessions or delay them. If there are others in the house, this can be split up between those who are going to be involved with caring for the puppy or dog. There are 3 activities that you'll want to do on a regular basis: Walks - The importance of these are often understated. It may seem as if your Boxer is just ambling along, perhaps even just going along for your sake but this is not true at all. The Boxer is a strong breed that was built for action; he needs to work his muscles and experience the liberty of movement. Super young pups should have all puppy shots before being taken out. For most Boxers, regardless of age, two walks per day are best. The daily amount should 45 minutes for pup and 1 hour for those 1 year and older. These can be broken up in any way that suits your own schedule and time availability. Cardio - Just a 15 minute bout of high intensity action such as Frisbee or fetch once per day can make a huge difference in a Boxer's demeanor, keeping much more calm and happy when he is back in the house. Some owners mistake a Boxer's indifference at seeing a Frisbee as not wanting to engage. However, it is often the level of enthusiasm that an owner displays that will directly impact a Boxer's desire to run. Most love to run and stretching and working the muscles in this way is a great method to keep a Boxer dog in good shape. That hyper and restless activity that you witness when a Boxer is in the house can be channeled into a short session of action that leaves the dog satisfied and both physically and mentally ABLE to be calm. Commands - We going to dive into this a bit more ahead, however taking 15 to 20 minutes a day to work on commands has a triple benefit: 1. You work toward having a well-trained dog which in and of itself is a huge plus. It helps a Boxer learn self-control. When a dog discovers the element of focus and purposely learning, he is then able to self-regulate and this itself can help the dog calm himself down. It helps to establish hierarchy, with you as the clear leader. For any dog to behave well, this is a must. While it is true that Boxers will be much calmer if they have a physical outlet, stimulating the mind plays a huge role as well. Very detailed studies have proven that canines in general have the emotional capacity of 3 year old humans. This is quite telling. Do you have kids? Or have ever spent even an hour with a toddler? They are super hyper, highly inquisitive and importantly are never happy just 'being' for long periods of time. Dogs are the same. Boxers can become hyper if they have nothing to focus on. Just left to 'be', they can get bored and have trouble knowing what to do, so they run around… they quite literally can end up bouncing off the walls in an overly hyper state with no real tools to calm themselves down. Now, if you take that same hyper Boxer dog and he is taken out for walks twice per day, plays one-on-one with his owner once a day AND is given indoor task that require him to use his canine senses, he'll be a much happier and calmer dog. The mention of canine senses is rather vital here…. Dogs have urges to use their sense of smell… to sniff… to explore with their noses …. It's the way it has been for thousands of years and it's a canine urge that is not going to go away no matter how pampered or spoiled a life a dog lives. So dogs have this innate craving to sniff after scents that builds up each day if not allowed to really use this, it can cause a dog to become frustrated. So, an indoor game that involves a Boxer using his sense of smell along with a task that requires focus is often an integral part of preventing hyper behavior and giving a dog a feeling of accomplishment that can work with the other elements to keep him calm. You might be thinking that you'll have to invest in some sort of intricate canine version of Sudoku. Not at all. This is as easy as hiding some treats in the house and encouraging your Boxer dog to find them. As with cardio mentioned earlier, the energy level and enthusiasm of the owner plays a huge part in how eager a Boxer will be to follow through. Speak with in an animated voice and encourage your dog to seek out the hidden treats. Start with easy to find hiding places and then work up to much more difficult sessions. Once a dog learns that it's time to play the game, he often will not give up and will search until he finds his treasure. Advanced sessions can include having the reward be deep in a cardboard box under layers of old towels and safe odds-and-ends and be sure that the treat itself has a strong scent; a good choice is a strip of bacon grease blotted out because most dogs won't bother to move much for a food that they will receive at any rate. Be sure to use a command word such as 'Find' or 'Go Get' and a word to end the session such as 'Good, Find' or 'Good, Get' to establish when this begins and when this ends. You don't have to do this every day; 2 or 3 days a week is usually enough to make a Boxer dog happy and work in conjunction with the other methods to keep hyper behavior at bay and encourage a more calming atmosphere when you just want your dog to settle down. Continued below 4 Have the right collection of toys for your Boxer. Are you guilty of walking out of a dollar store with an armful of cheap dog toys? If so, you may very well then be an owner who wonders why the heck your Boxer isn't just happy having all those toys and would rather run, jump up and spin around the house like a hyper nutcase. When a dog is bored he will do one of three things: Sulk and act depressed, bark or otherwise have disturbing behavior or express agitation. When you invest a few more bucks to obtain sturdy, quality toys that encourage independent play, this can make a huge difference in a dog's general state of mind and his ability to keep himself occupied. Think of someone giving you a paper and pencil compared to paper and a piece Crayon box. Give your Boxer rawhide alternatives that allow him to happily gnaw away or treat-release toys that motivate him to work to gain his reward. There are two huge benefits of teaching a Boxer all basic commands: he will respect you as the true leader and you will have control over his behavior. While a hyper puppy definitely still needs to be walked, engaged and given tasks to stay busy…and a puppy cannot be expected to remain calm all day… when you take the assertive position to give a 'Sit' command that is listened to without hesitation, this can really come in handy if your Boxer is acting hyper around company or when out in public in a store or other area where you really need him to act calm. It's never too early or too late to start working on this. Training for the basics of Sit, Come, Stay, Down, Get or Fetch and Give can start when a Boxer puppy is 8 weeks old and can be taught to older dogs as well. In addition to this, teaching a Boxer to Heel is always advantageous and not only will keep him calm when out on a walk around the neighborhood but will also keep him appropriately by your side in high energy situations where a dog can become hyper just by picking up the vibe of an event. The size of a dog's world is exactly the size that an owner allows it to be. Dogs that are not used to seeing cars and people walking about will often bark like mad when they do actually see them. Dogs that are not used to being out in public will act inappropriately because they have not been exposed enough to know how to stay calm. Dogs that rarely see a visitor to the house will often jump and act overly excited on those few occasions that someone new enters into their territory. Boxers should be gradually exposed to the many situations, places, people and other pets that exist in the world. If you stayed inside your home… only venturing into your yard and nowhere else for years and were suddenly plopped down in to Times Square, you wouldn't be so calm either; that's how dogs feel if they are isolated and not given the opportunity to slowly learn about the world and all that is in it. Go to parks, bring your Boxer along to run errands, bring him hiking, change up the walking routes, take the time to say hello when you pass by another owner with his dog, have him outside with you while you wash the car, bring him to the beach… unless there are big signs saying 'no dogs allowed' bring him along and let him experience the sights and sounds of the world. Hyperkinesis - Being clinically hyperactive is often misdiagnosed. Most dogs simply need the physical and mental releases as we discussed above. These highly sensitive dogs can be set off into a frenzy by everyday simple noises such as microwave beeping or normal household events such as someone zipping down the staircase. For these rare cases, thorough testing must be performed, which should include a 2 to 3 day stay at an veterinary hospital where vitals are monitored, both heart and respiratory rates, when both at rest and when stimuli is introduced. If this is diagnosed, stimulants similar to those that are given to humans with ADHD can be helpful as are vet supervised changes to the diet and possible supplements of L-theanine, GABA and valerian root. Senior Issues - In some cases, a senior dog will be unable to stay calm and this is often related to either cognitive decline, health issues that are causing discomfort or a combination of the two. Physical discomfort often associated with arthritis can cause a dog to have trouble resting or sleeping. Food Allergies - While we have not seen any studies showing specifics, veterinary medicine claims that canines may have food allergies that can lead to abnormal behavior including acting hyper and having an inability to calm down. With all the high levels of chemicals found in many manufactured foods, it's easy to believe this could be the case. When a dog is constantly ingesting artificial coloring, artificial flavoring and all kinds of chemical preservatives, this is not good for physical health and it's not a huge leap from there to a dog's mental health as well. If this is suspected, a change to home cooked food or a switch to a quality commercial brand without these elements should be considered. Summary Boxers are animated, able to express emotion and are great companions. This is not a lazy breed or one that is content to sit alone just 'being'. Expect your Boxer puppy to be hyper and for a Boxer of any age, follow the guidelines for providing proper care which will help your dog channel his energy in a health way. With our dogs, we often get what we give. The attention and time that you take to interact with your Boxer will pay off, giving you a happy and healthy dog. It may be hard to believe now, but just a few months before this picture was taken, this Boxer was fighting for her life. Just one day after finding her forever home, this Boxer pup was found to have parvo, a word that new puppy owners never want to hear, and was fighting for her life. Emergency measures had to be taken to save her. But, it did not stop there. Even if a pup initially survives parvo, support treatment is vital for full recovery. With the help of their veterinarian, the family provided at-home treatment and care, determined for their Boxer to live. First, An Overview of Parvo What is parvo? Canine parvovirus CPV infection is a highly contagious viral illness. In some cases, this can result in a lifelong heart issues. What are they symptoms? The most common symptoms are lethargy, severe vomiting, severe diarrhea, loss of appetite and due to these, weight loss and life-threatening dehydration. How do dogs catch parvo? This is an incredibly virulent virus, found in the feces of infected dogs. It can live on surfaces for up to 1 year and can be found on flooring, bowls, toys, bedding, just about anywhere that an infected dog has been. Age — This is most commonly seen with pups 6 weeks to 6 months old. Mortality rate — Dogs can recover from parvo, in fact most do. So, of course, it is vital that all pups receive their inoculations. Surviving parvo depends quite a bit on how fast parvo is diagnosed, the quality of the treatment and the age of the pup. Treatment — This is an emergency situation with a minimum of 1 week of inpatient, intensive care. Further recovery at home can take months. There is no cure for parvo; there is no method of killing the virus. Therefore, the symptoms are treated. Because this is so severe, IV intervention must be given for a hope at survival. Q: Where did you obtain your Boxer puppy from and did you have any idea that she was ill? A: We were looking to get a Boxer, and wanted to rescue. I volunteer for a horse rescue, so this seemed right for us. We also felt our other dog Bailey who is a Newfoundland mix needed a companion. We saw someone had posted online that they had gotten a puppy for their kids, the landlord raised the rent, and he needed the puppy gone ASAP. We figured this would be a good moment to help rehome an animal, and help another family. We picked the dog up in a very sketchy area of town. My first red flag! When he pulled up it was a pretty quick hand off, it was dark, and the kids were instantly in love. By the time we got the puppy home she seemed very quiet, and would not eat or drink. Our assumption at the time was she was in a transition and this was normal. The next morning Coconut was still not eating or drinking. NOPE no luck. By around that afternoon she was vomiting, lethargic, feverish, and also had diarrhea. We were now dealing with a life or death situation. We feel she may have been a pass off from a backyard breeder. Or possibly the guy truly didn't know, she was ill since he said he only had her for a few days. He was conveniently out of town when we called him for questioning the next day. All that really mattered at this point was the puppy. The emotional toll was high as we were so in love. A: The person who had placed the ad was asking a small rehoming fee which he claimed was a portion of what he paid for the dog. Q: And not that it would have changed your mind, since the pup was obviously in need of being in a loving home, but were you given any papers at all? Any health records showing vaccinations? A: When we got the dog, she came with a vaccination record that was a Do-It-Yourself vaccination kit that a breeder may use. The sheet looked professional like what a vet would use but said home kit on it. It showed 1 dose of the Parvo vaccination. Her tail was also docked. This is all the person said he had from who he got the dog from. He claimed to have had the puppy about 5 days. This brought up questions about Parvo incubation period. Did the puppy get sick from the breeder? OR was it the exposure that she had clearly received prior to us getting her. Was this man in fact the breeder? Did we just get hustled? Or did he really not know she was sick when we got her and his story was legit? All we knew was she needed our help FAST. Q: Was it the very next day that she started showing more severe signs of vomiting and diarrhea? And what was your initial response? Did you call a vet or did you make an appointment right away? A: We had her at the vet the very next am first thing. Q: Can you please describe her treatment at the vet? How ill was she and what steps needed to be taken to save her? A: When we got to the vet she was immediately tested and diagnosed with Parvo. Coconut was quickly taken away and treated as the highly contagious case she was, and quarantined. It was a very difficult moment as a parent. We were so excited to have this new member to our family, and yet now I needed to tell the kids she may not make it. Coconut spent a day and a half at the vet. And was stable. She had needed a transfusion, meds, fluids etc. We got her in before it had really cause more internal, or fatal damage. Problem was the vets office was closed on Sundays. This meant needing to relocate Coconut to a 24 hour ER facility. We felt sick and helpless. Upon needing to pick up Coconut and make a decision, we explained to our vet that we needed to be realistic, but were ready to roll up our sleeves anyway we could from home. They completely supported the situation, and had their awesome tech give us a crash course on how to administer fluid injections, and meds. It was all or nothing at this point. All we wanted was to take her home and love her in sickness or health. Q: Once you got her back home, can you please describe what that at-home care involved? A: Once we got Coconut home, we turned our bathroom into a quarantine zone. Anyone entering the bathroom must wear robes, socks on their feet, and sterilize their hands constantly. The robes were left inside the bathroom and worn over our clothes. The socks were worn to not track anything out. Morgan played her Taylor Swift CD during the day, and soothing nature sounds at night. We took shifts sleeping with her. Dylan was determined to keep his new best friend healthy and happy. Dustan became comfortable with injecting needles real quick. The first time we administered her fluids was a shock. We were not expecting the large hump on her back afterwards! Thank you Google. The fluid naturally absorbs, but it sure looked freaky for a few minutes. A needed moment of levity. On Monday we brought her back to the vet first thing in the morning. She was green lit to start on chicken and rice, and making amazing progress. She was starting to slowly eat, and her stool slowly started to come back to normal this is a big deal. It takes time to pass everything out of the body. Our emotions were on a steel roller coaster. As soon as things looked better and we would get excited, another bout of the runs happened and we would again panic. She was under quarantine for about 7 days in the bathroom. We then slowly reintroduced her to the house and other animals. Our other animals were never at risk. The first night our one cat tried to snuggle Coconut when she was at her weakest. Animals get it. Does she have any lasting effects of having had parvo? Is her heart healthy? And are you under any specific instructions regarding care, going forward? A: Today Coconut is a healthy and happy girl. We never take for granted that every day is a gift. Our vet staff was so amazing and supportive. She is all things we love about the breed. One side effect we can see at this point is she may be extra spoiled. Her favorite activities are playing with Bailey, off-roading in the desert, and going to the beach. She even won her very first Halloween costume contest this last Halloween. I need to take a moment here to thank AllBoxerInfo for all that you do. During our struggles, it was amazing to know that there was a community out there, and a site that was so full of pertinent and useful information. You were a huge resource for us and a comfort, for that we are so grateful. Editor's' note: Thanks, Kristin! One thing that has changed around here is how we feed our dogs. They still have a small portion of dog food as well. Morgan and I recently made super dog treats! Mix well, put in a candy mold and chill! Dog approved and so good for their coats. Q: When we first made contact with each other, you had mentioned your background and your hopes for having Coconut becoming a therapy dog. Can you tell us more about that? A: Yes, I have a M. I am hoping we can get her trained well enough to be a therapy dog. It would be amazing to have her visit vets, hospitals, and retirement homes. She is very sweet, and as you all know a very trainable breed. However, while I have the therapy part down, and her basics, her training will hit a ceiling with me at the helm. That is something I am looking into more. She has all the other traits going for her. With her story, and my background, helping others is what I would like to do with her. That was not the initial goal, but now, after all she has been thru, it feels right. She is our inspiration. She is only 6 months now and has a way to go but we have hope we can make it, she is showing us she is the right dog for the job. It would be wonderful to see her pay it forward. Q: What advice would you give to other owners to help prevent this sort of thing from happening? A: If I had any advice to give, it would be to stress how important it is for dogs to receive ALL their vaccinations before going out into the real world and socializing in public areas. I understand people want to show off their puppies, and get their fun going etc. Please do not. It felt like forever until she could go out and play. But healthy or not that what needs to be done. The risk is NOT worth it. We had the best intentions. Scammers WILL play with emotions and facts. We truly feel Coconut is a blessing in our lives and a survivor. ABI: Kristin is right on track with this. Newborns have protection via their mother's antibodies. Puppies are not fully protected until 2 weeks past the point of having all of their puppy shots. Also, buying a pup from an ad online can indeed be risky. It's tempting of course, to try and rescue a dog that way, but you have to be exceedingly careful. If you want to adopt a pup, look to your local rescues and shelters. If you want to go through a breeder and you are not sure who to trust, you may wish to look to the AKC's Breeder Referral Program. Lifespan Sociability If you get a Sheptese, get ready for the questions. People are going to ask you all the time, what is it? The parent breeds are similar in some personality aspects. They are both affectionate with their families. Remember that the Maltese was—and still is—a pampered pooch. He knows it, too. This pup has the sassiness and bravado of many toy breeds. Few realize that they are small dogs. The German Shepherd probably fuels this attitude. He is confident because he has the stuff to back up his aplomb. This pup has earned his stripes and then some! Every day will be a new adventure with this pooch. Selective breeding refined the German Shepherd to the stately dog we see today. The AKC appreciated the efforts and recognized him in .The first pup on the books was named Queen of Switzerland and worthy of the title. The German Shepherd took on the wrath after the world wars. It was also replaced at one time with Alstaian. The Maltese has retained his place with the rich and famous. While the Maltese got his start with Roman royalty, he has retained this status with his fans today. Many things go into the mix, including breed dominance, history, and size. That makes it hard to generalize about the Sheptese. The German Shepherd brings keen intelligence to the mix. He is easy to train and can learn a variety of tasks and commands. The Maltese is equally as smart. That means that you need to challenge your pet mentally. Are These Dogs Good for Families? He wants all the attention. Separation anxiety is a concern with the Sheptese. This pup is relatively friendly with strangers, but early socialization is imperative to seal the deal. It comes from his history as a herding dog. It also means trouble for your cat or other small animals. This pup is moderately tolerant of other canines. Many of the caveats depend on the dominant breed. If not, rely on the advice of your veterinarian for the particular care that your pet will need. The size of your pup is a vital consideration. Use those observations as your guide because foods for small and large breeds vary. If your pup is more like a Maltese, you must make sure he eats at every meal. Dogs of this size are more inclined toward drops in blood sugar levels. Begin with three or four meals a day for a puppy with two times for an adult. Walks and trips to the doggie park will seal the deal. This pup has a moderate tendency toward weight gain, so regular activity is imperative to keep him healthy. Think of your time together as opportunities to bond with your pet. He can also handle more challenging tasks, which is why he performs on the agility circuit in dog shows. The key to success is consistent training. Let your pet know what you want him to do. The Maltese is easy-peasy with his silky hair and regular combing to prevent mats. The Shepherd needs regular brushing to keep the hair in check. The key is to remain consistent. You teach your pup what he needs to do, and you make it easier for you. Handle his paws often to make trimming his nails easier. A post shared by Aaki aaki. Minor Conditions. While they may be larger than a Maltese, they rarely grow to be the size of a German Shepherd. Very likely, they will be around 10 to 18 inches tall and weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. Even when the GSD parent dons another color, its mutt is likely to inherit the same color and the same medium-to-long double coat. However, the German Shepherd coat it might inherit means a double coat that sheds year-round and blows off twice a year. This means having to brush at least once a week to control the shedding and then as frequently as once daily during the shedding seasons. As for the ears, maintenance will depend on which set the pup inherits. All dogs benefit from regular nail trimming, and the Maltese-German Shepherd mix is no different. It will also require frequent toothbrushing to ensure good oral health. Strength The strength of the German Shepherd — Maltese cross will mainly depend on its size. They may, however, still have considerable bite strength relative to the size of their muzzle. The build and size of the German Shepherd unsurprisingly make it a faster runner at approximately 30 miles per hour. Given the running speeds of its two parents, the Maltese — GSD mix is expected to run quite fast. Of course, its speed will be proportional to its size as longer legs mean larger strides. Nevertheless, you can expect these dogs to be quick on their feet, agile, and energetic. Exercise Requirement The Maltese — German Shepherd mix may be more laid back thanks to the lower energy levels it inherits from the Maltese parent. However, having a GSD parent means they are likely to still be quite energetic. They will thrive on physical exercise of at least 30 minutes per day in order to avoid the development of bad behaviors. The intelligence and work drive they are likely to inherit from the German Shepherd parent also means they will require plenty of mental stimulation. These may be in the form of puzzle toys , enrichment games, and training. They may also excel in canine sports, which would ensure both physical and mental wellbeing. It belongs to the highest tier of dog intelligence, which means it only takes up to 5 repetitions for them to learn a command. The Maltese, however, is not quite as trainable. These dogs belong to the fifth tier of dog intelligence and may need up to 80 repetitions to master a new command. Nevertheless, what it lacks in natural intelligence, it makes up for in its eagerness to please. With early exposure and socialization, these crosses can be well-behaved and delightful companions. They relate better with other dogs and are much more likely to relax and switch off at home. Compared to the Maltese, however, they have much more energy and a stronger drive to work. Although these dogs are highly adaptable, they will benefit from plenty of training and even a job to do at home. But no matter which parent it takes its personality from, the Maltese — German Shepherd mix is sure to be affectionate with family and playful yet gentle with young children. You can also expect them to be slightly wary of strangers because of their protective nature. Health Any Maltese GSD cross will require regular vet checkups from puppyhood because the difference in size between the two parents can lead to several complications. Conversely, its heart might be too small to support a larger body. Additionally, the genetic conditions of both parents will play a huge role in the health of their offspring. The GSD parent brings up concerns of hip and elbow dysplasia while the Maltese parent makes it more likely to suffer from patellar issues. But if both breeding stocks are screened and healthy, the resulting offspring are likely to be healthy as well. Lifespan Barring any complications from mismatched sizing, a Maltese — German Shepherd cross is generally expected to live between 10 and 12 years. To ensure longevity, take your pup to regular vet check-ups and feed them a high-quality diet throughout its life. Additionally, keep your dog from becoming overweight as this will lead not only to cardiovascular issues but will also cause unnecessary wear on their joints and give them a much harder time in their senior years. Nevertheless, it can participate in the AKC Canine Partners program, which accommodates the registration of mutts and allows them to participate in a number of club-hosted events. Among the events that the German Shepherd-Maltese cross is expected to excel in include Flyball and Rally. It would be difficult for you to find a German Shepherd — Maltese mix because responsible breeders would not produce them on purpose. The difference in size between the two breeds puts the resulting puppies at great risk. If the Maltese is the female that will carry the litter, its life will also be at risk because the puppies might be too large for its body to handle. Nevertheless, you may still encounter the occasional GSD-Maltese cross as a result of an accidental mating. When you do, it will surely be an interesting dog with plenty of unique characteristics. Even more so because of its incredibly unique appearance and combination of personality traits from the two parents. However, these dogs may need careful and regular vet examinations throughout their life since the difference in size between the two parents can bring life-threatening health conditions. It grows up to 10 inches for a male and 9 inches for a female. An adult Maltese regardless of gender can weight up to 4 pounds. A Maltese fall under the toy group classification. Its color is white, and it comes with a long coat. It requires regular grooming. The Maltese are one of the few dog breeds that need a regular bath. If you are looking for a cute family dog that your kids can play with, this sweet and affectionate breed is highly recommended. In his YouTube video , AnimalWised showed reasons why Maltese is one of the most loved family dogs in the world. Getting to Know Your German Shepherd Breed GSDs or German Shepherd dogs are known for many things according to AKC — loyalty to its owner, courage, ability to learn and understand commands, confidence, and willingness to save the ones they loved. It is not just a pet and a friend, it is also a guardian. An adult GSD can weigh up to 95 pounds. It grows up to 26 inches in height. It has the size of a Maltese and the physical looks of a German Shepherd. You can find a cute image of a Sheptese from Dog Breed Info. This is the only information available about a Sheptese online. It is probably because it is not easy to breed a small Maltese with a large German Shepherd. In a forum posted in Quora , members expressed fear from a possible Maltese German Shepherd mix. And if it worked and the female Maltese carries a large GSD pup, would she survive the birthing process? Perhaps these questions hindered most breeders of today from crossing these two breeds. A GSD has a lot of great characteristics that pet parents would love. When it comes to popular GSD mixed breeds, the following are the most popular ones. Mix them and you get the top two best guard dogs out there. These breeds are energetic, obedient, loyal, and brave. Collies and GSDs are known as herding dogs in the early s so you can expect this cross-breed to be very active especially outdoors. Despite being a large dog, your kids can safely play around Shollies especially those trained ones. This breed is often seen cuddled by Hollywood stars. Combine it with another breed and you can get an equally cute and cuddly pet baby. When it comes to popular Maltese mixed breeds, the following are the most popular ones. Maltese and Poodle Mix Maltipoo Charming, affectionate, and loving — this is how little Maltipoos are often described. Because of its poodle genes, it often comes in brown color and not white. The cute face is the same though and it remains to be a great family pet. Maltese and Shihtzu Malshi Do you want a furball that you can bring anywhere you go? The Malshi would be a great cross-breed to have. It is very small that you can even place it in your bag while doing your window shopping. An active dog, the Malshi is a good company even if you just want to binge-watch over the weekend. Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier Morkie Are you a fan of small and cute dogs? The Morkie is an example of a family dog that you can leave with your child with a peace of mind. This is a friendly, loving, and very active breed too. Final Thoughts on the Maltese German Shepherd Mix Finding information on the Maltese German Shepherd mix is challenging because very few breeders had probably tried it. According to Breeding Business , it is difficult and worrisome to breed dogs of different sizes. There are health concerns involved and increased risk. The strain on the smaller female can be stressful and can even lead to death. If you are into German Shepherds or Maltese, it is best to choose from their popular mixes as these are proven to be healthier and more reliable breeds.
My fascination for this breed actually began as a child while growing up in Great Britain. The yearly outing with my father was one I looked forward to with much anticipation. Years later I married my husband, Gene. It was always my ambition to one day bring a boxer into our own family, to be raised together with our two young sons. In we ventured out to purchase our first American bred boxer. Both my husband and I consider ourselves very fortunate indeed to have been able to purchase a beautiful, show potential brindle bitch named Chelsea from Glenn and Zona Grupe of Glennroe Boxers. Attending shows together, Zona and I put four owner-handled majors in quick succession on our beautiful Chelsea. As our foundation bitch, she launched Telstar on its way to success. Much more, I might add, than my wildest dreams. Striving to do the very best we possibly can in every aspect of raising, breeding and showing our own dogs has enabled me to enjoy the benefits of knowing our achievements have come from our love and devotion for the Boxer. Showing and breeding has had additional perks. I have had the great fortune of meeting many wonderful people along the way. As a boxer breeder, I also derive a great deal of satisfaction when placing a pet puppy in a companion home, knowing that these buyers benefit not only from our philosophy of breeding a quality, healthy, structurally sound boxer, but also from having the joy and love of owning one. I still enjoy competing as an owner handler, and oddly enough, still feel that same overwhelming sense of accomplishment being on the other end of the leash when I finish the championship on one of my dogs. The feeling is no different than I felt in the beginning, some thirty years ago. Obedience regulations were adopted in .Handlers were required to be licensed. The first Professional Handlers Assn. Keynote speaker for this event was William Z. Breed, who later married Miriam Hostetter Young Barmere. In , double handling and artificial coloring were strictly prohibited at shows. July of also saw the advent of championship certificates issued by the AKC. By , ribbon colors were standardized and kennel names had to be registered if they were to be protected. To encourage participation in purebred dog shows the AKC, from until , offered cash awards. These were available to member-clubs for competition at their shows. Many of the top winners had been imported from Europe, and the AKC wished to encourage American exhibitors to show dogs of their own breeding. Independent specialties enjoyed some additional cash awards. But only the Boston clubs were then holding any significant number of specialties. It may seem strange today that these awards are for American Bred only, and even more strange that there were dogs being shown and being awarded championships including Boxerswho were not AKC-registered. Actually, unrecognized breeds could be shown until .Some of the dogs listed as not registered when they received their titles were undoubtedly imports whose paper work hadn't caught up with them. It wasn't until , when the AKC drew up the list of recognized breeds and varieties, that new breeds were required to form parent clubs first and maintain their own registries until later officially recognized by AKC. His owners, Governor and Mrs. Dampf had no lasting influence on the breed, as there were very few bitches in America for breeding. There were, however, several other interested fanciers, most of them in the Midwest, during the s. This included the Judics, who were the first to advertise in a magazine .But it wasn't until the early thirties that the Boxer began to catch on. International Champion ICh. Check v Hunnenstein arrived in the U. Check's exceptional personality won many friends for the breed. He was the grandsire of Dorian from a litter sired in Germany and sired the first litters bred at both Mazelaine and Barmere. He died in late .In , Ch. Dodi v. Stoeckersburg, bred by Henry Stoecker and owned by Miriam Breed, became the first bitch to complete a championship. Sigurd v Dom of Barmere. Sigurd was imported by Charles Ludwig for Mrs. Breed then Miriam Hostetter Young. Also shown by Mr. He was the leading sire in and second in and .Sigurd was very prepotent, dominating every breeding and founding a line that was easily recognized. He is the grandfather of the other three foundation sires. In all, he sired sixteen American-bred champions and ten imports. Sigurd was shown many times at ABC shows and matches. He consistently won the Stud Dog class and Veterans until his death at around 12 years of age. After several subsequent meetings, Mrs. Total membership: seventeen. Nitt Esto Alpha as Treasurer. Gaertner mother of Mrs. Palmedo was Secretary and Dr. Also on the board were Mrs. Whittemore, Mrs. Palmedo Lillian , F. Greenhagen asst. Other original members were Mr. John P. The club received membership in the AKC on May .Sigurd v Dom of Barmere, owned by Mrs. Young, had the honor. Lewis was responsible for the AKC Gazette Boxer breed column, the first of which appeared in the June , and continued sporadically thereafter. Covered in these early columns were the clubs activities, obedience tests, worms, dirty kennels, and ear cropping considered doomed then. With 35 Boxers competing on June 6, , the club held its first specialty in conjunction with the Greenwich Conn. Corso v Uracher Wasserfall se Sumbula won the first specialty, a win he repeated in .Corso had been imported by the Palmedos and finished in late .He, too, was handled by Harry Harnett. The Gazette for this year lists Mrs. Lewis and James Trullinger as two of the eight judges approved only for Boxers. He had previously written for Dogdom and Kennel Review. Alice Rosenthal and J. Wagner handled similar duties for Dog News. Probably the most controversial issue of the day revolved around the official Standard. There were several bones of contention the most frequent being proportions especially of the head , color and size. They apparently had either a very early, unrevised copy of the German Standard from before or the Austrian Standard prior to the time the Austrians adopted the newer German version. Boxers in Austria were then very plain, no white was allowed above the shoulder line and no white at all was considered even better! Also, the Standard adopted by these people provided for exact proportions of the dog's body and head which were, at that time, actually measured by the judge. This first Standard was adopted and sent to the AKC before the ABC membership such as the Wagnersheard about the proportion and color requirements. Most breeders here had been using the current German Standard. An explosion was not long in coming! Perhaps this quote from Dan Gordon's book, The Boxer, gives the clearest view of the situation: The original members of the ABC were not at that time prominent in breeding circles and were not too familiar with the German Standard or the dog then considered most acceptable in German circles. Much of the stock seen then was of an old German and Austrian type. This group was working under an obsolete standard. As most importations were from Germany, they conformed to that Standard, but on arrival here, they were to be judged under an entirely different standard. Confusion reigned. The original heads of the ABC were also opposed to white [markings], a color very prevalent in the von Dom breeding. It was soon realized that something would have to be done. And something was. In April , the Standard was revised. We quote Mr. Wagner: The German Boxer is so new to America that most of our basic breeding stock is of German origin, with additional imports arriving almost daily. Under these conditions, the adoption by the ABC of its own standards, definitely differing from, rather than conforming to, the accepted German version was an unforgivable blunder bound to cause trouble. The German publication, Boxer Blaetter, even took note of the situation, criticizing the head proportions found in the AKC version of the Standard. Dorian was a large, impressive brindle male. He had been Schutzhund-trained and never forgot it. Film is still available of him moving and going over a six-foot jump at about eight years of age. Jack Wagner always said Dorian was their greatest boxer, and one suspects Wagner had Dorian in mind when working on the Standard. Dorian was the leading sire in , , and , and tied with Lustig in .He sired a total of thirt-nine American bred and imported champions and eight producers of champions. Lustig was considered to have an outstanding head and expression. He too went BOB at Westminster. Lustig never met Dorian in the ring here, as they were both shown by Jimmie Sullivan. He was the leading sire in , tied Dorian in , was second in , and .A total of forty-one American-bred and imported champions and five producers were sired by Lustig. Despite all the controversy raging over the standard, the club put on their first sanctioned match May 9, and held their second specialty with North Westchester Kennel Club at Katonah in June. The Puppy Match was held at the estate of Mrs. Lawrence Whittemore, St. James, LI, NY. An entry of thirty-eight turned out for it. This match was the first of many. Two or three matches were held annually, a tradition which continued well into the s. They also served as officers for several years. Judge was August Belmont. Entered for exhibition only as announced several months in advance were Dorian, Lustig and Pitt von der Wurm then of Tulgey Wood. Herr Stockmann came over to judge Boxers at Westminster in February, .He drew the then-unprecedented entry of .In addition, he and John Wagner worked till the wee hours of the night in a hotel room translating the German Standard, which had by then been adopted by almost all other countries. Palmedo and Mrs. All three spoke fluent German. Again we quote Dr. Gordon: Altho [sic] not perfect, the new revision omitted much of the confusing measurements, etc. White [flash] was permitted, altho checks were ruled out in conformity with the Germans who, after again ruling-in checks, had made another about face and voted them out of the stud books effective .Both were eliminated to attain working dog status during the war as breeders were allotted food for breeds used as war dogs. Lewis suggested in her August column that an illustrated Standard be done by the parent club to better define types in Boxers. Herr Stockmann's judging formula was passed on to American fanciers in the Sept. Minor faults are to be overlooked. .Only those faults which are extremely difficult to eliminate from the breed are to be severely penalized.Unsoundness, unless of a hereditary character, is of slight consequence. Herr Stockmann and Mr. Wagner concurred in the opinion that lack of stop, long back and bad hindquarters were the hardest faults to eliminate. A complete change in officers occurred, and John Wagner was voted Honorary Secretary. The membership had practically doubled, standing at .The entry was thirty Boxers. Mid-West Boxer Club now held their second independent specialty, Dec. There were eighteen registered in the next twenty-two years. By , seventy-one had been registered. But by this figure had jumped to .The Boxer was becoming better known. There were nine directors required. Richard C. Kettles became the new AKC Delegate, a post which he held for the next sixteen years. New Committees included Librarian, filled by Charles O. Spannaus and Obedience, headed by Katherine Lippert, who had organized the first Training Committee the year before. George Ross Hall and staff members Mrs. Wagner, Mrs. Palmedo, Fred Hamm and Alfred Cousins. An additional duty of the Librarian was historian, and members were encouraged to send in their Boxer clippings and pictures for his files. Whitney Blake, became a memorial to Mr. William Z. Breed, one of the pioneer Boxer breeders of the U. From the records, it would appear that Mrs. Breed was to have judged, but Mr. Frank Simms stood in for her after the death of her husband. Judge Simms had an entry of seventy-four. Best of Breed was Ch. Biene v. Elbe-Bogen se Sumbula, owned by the Palmedos. Biene became the first bitch to make a record in our breed. The Boxer, by John P. Wagner, appeared in time for the Annual Specialty. This book became, and remains today, the Bible for Boxer breeders. It went through several printings between and , with Utz and Brandy on the dust covers. It can still be found today with some persistent searching. Wagner had a tremendous wealth of knowledge derived from his contacts with the German breeders, particularly the Stockmanns, and from ten years of his own breeding on a very large scale. Mazelaine undoubtedly had the largest Boxer kennel in the United States, often having 80 to Boxers in the breeding program. Mazelaine still holds the record today for most champions bred, owned or finished, with well over .The entry was a hefty fifty puppies. A minor discussion occurred that fall over whether to divide the Open class by color at the ABC shows. Mid-West and Morris and Essex were both doing so, and it was very well received. Thus, the ABC adopted the practice the next year. In September, , war was declared in Europe, effectively cutting the U. But Boxer clubs continued to form during this time. Southern Boxer Club formally organized Nov. This was a regional club with members from all over the South. The President was Douglas 1. Hunt Birbama of Birmingham. Among the other members were Mr. Adams Bellum -Atlanta. Also involved were Mr. Booth Dunroaming-Tenn , Mr. Osborn and Mr. Milner Atlanta. Southern's first supported entry was at the Atlanta KC. The club became inactive during the war. The same month saw the formation of the Michigan Boxer Club. There were many well-known Boxer people in the Detroit area, and among the first members were President - Dr. Douglas Schellig, VP Dr. Gerald Fitzgerald, Sec. Earl Davidson and Board Members Dr. Daniels owner of Kapellmeister , John Beale and Dr. Dan Gordon Bladan. Officers were President Dr. Blake H. Gross and Mr. All of these were very active Boxer breeders in California. Wagner became the first Honorary Vice President at the December, , meeting. The spring ABC match was held Feb. John Wagner judged an entry of .Jouett Shouse, who served as President. BOB went to the Kettles' Ch. Kurass vd Blutenau of Dorick. Kurass had gone Group Second at Morris and Essex the week before. Kitty vd Uhlandshohe for Progeny Bitch. A Parade of Champions thrilled all, and later counting revealed that Dorick had sired the most entries in the parade - five. Fall , saw several firsts in the Boxer world. Brace of Briarnole, owned by Dr. He was by Lustig out of Frey of Mazelaine. This was followed shortly by Ch. Potomac Boxer Club held their first puppy match Nov 2, with entries. Here there was an obedience demonstration by Coquette v. Studebaker, and, if the records are correct, a good time was had by all. Winner of this class went on to compete for BOB. Entry that year was fifty-nine. Winners Dog was Pancho von Dom, from Puppy class. This puppy had not been bred by the Stockmanns and the use of their kennel name on him, even though he was a good specimen, resulted in the von Dom kennel name being registered in the United States to protect it from such use. MWBC also introduced another innovation that proved very popular: the pre-show dinner. During the early s at least, their independent specialty - and the good times had by all - made Mid-West the show to attend for everyone. It was a foreshadow of more serious things to come. Among others on the Board were Lt. Palmedo, Dr. Bartley, and Al Cousins. Harold Palmedo, and columnist John J. Baird among its members. Judge for this event was the very popular Fred Hams. The new American Bred Champions class was offered at this show also. A forty-six-dog entry was topped by Kalmar of Billysee from the class. The euphoric feeling of a growing, successful American boxer Club was part of the country's calm before the storm, but a nation's hopes to avoid the "European conflict" came to an abrupt end on Dec. We were suddenly at war in both the Pacific and Europe. The Whole Dog Journal , a monthly guide to natural dog care and training. The Bark , a magazine for dog lovers. Doodle Puppy Cut The puppy cut is a standard, trimmed style that looks great and cute on many breeds of fluffy dogs, including Doodles. The coat is typically clipped with a longer blade or clipper guard, or scissored to create a fluffy look. Most often, a puppy cut is when a dog is cut to an even length all over the entire body, including the head, ears, and tail. The head, face, ears, and tail can all be cut to a different length than the body if requested. The facial hair is cut in rounded, fringed layers. This style of cut is ideal because it helps to minimize matting , tangles, and allergens. Photo used with permission. Credit: zucca. Credit: miasgroomroom Photo used with permission. However, instead of trimming the top of the head and around the legs, leave the hair a bit longer around. There are numerous types and variations of Goldendoodle lamb cut. For example, some people trim the body and tail and leave the hair on the ears and legs. Goldendoodle Mohawk Cut Get this gorgeous and stylish haircut to your doodle as if he is going to join a band! Are you looking for Goldendoodle haircuts that emphasize the adorable features of your pooch? Aug 2, Share Are you a proud owner of a Goldendoodle? One of the things that makes a Goldendoodle so magnificent is their unique curly coats. There are many different styles out there that will fit your Goldendoodle and give them a personality all of their own. Goldendoodles have thick, dense coats which can be a total drag in the hot summer months. But their coats are going to be significantly shorter than normal. However, there are some huge advantages to this trim other than heat considerations. Most dogs look good with a puppy cut; however, the fluffy nature of their coats brings out their charm in this do. Like the kennel cut, this hairstyle is of uniform length all over their body. It also helps give your pup a youthful appearance no matter their age. Instead of uniformly trimming their face, the area around their snoot is a bit longer against the backdrop of the rest of their face. This gives them a unique, playful look. The puppy cut does have some added benefits besides just making your pooch cute as a button. The short length helps them to prevent mattes and tangles. However, it leaves enough hair to prevent them from completely freezing out when it gets colder. They are half-Poodle, after all! Poodle cuts can often come without warning as well. Even though you may have a specific hairstyle in mind, your groomer may think otherwise. With a Goldendoodle, mattes can run relatively deep due to their thick curly fur. This keeps your dog happy and mat-free without ruining their experience at the groomers. And with a Poodle cut, your pup will generally receive a clean low-cut face, back, belly, and sides. But the tops of their head, ears, tail, and legs can normally maintain a thicker, fluffy appearance as that where less matting will occur. While many Goldendoodle owners love the Poodle cut, others are less enthused by it. This particular hairstyling tends to make your dog look much older and elegant. Their legs are left a little longer and shaped for a puffier, rounder look. And while the lamb cut comes in at our most radical clip so far, the next style takes things to a whole new level. Lion Cut The lion cut is one of those Goldendoodle haircut styles that can set your dog apart from the rest. Normally given to smaller dogs such as the Pomeranian, the lion cut does exactly what it sounds like—makes your pooch look like a lion! This is done by recreating the shaggy mane of a lion and its signature pom tail. You can also customize the lion cut with specific details. It gives them a bit more body and the illusion of a more muscular stature. This style is achieved by giving your pup a kennel cut but leaving a fluffy mohawk that runs down their back starting from the top knot. You can have it run the width of their topknot; however, a common tactic is to shave the sides down and make it just a tad narrower. Is it going to end near their shoulder blades? Or go down their back a bit? The most fun part about a mohawk cut is the colors that you can choose to dye it! Sure, you can go without, and keep it their natural color. Dino Cut This is easily the most ridiculous Goldendoodle haircut styles on our list. The coat of the Goldendoodle seems almost too perfect for unique stylings such as this. Their dense coats allow for bold cuts and shaping. Just be careful when finding a stylist to do this type of cut. The full shave is exactly what it sounds like. From tip to tail, your Goldendoodle will be completely stripped of their coat. By giving your pup a full shave, you can remove all of those nasty mats and other coat clumps. This allows you to start anew and style as you see fit in the future. This can also be a summer option for those who live in extreme heat or tropical climates. Conclusion: Goldendoodle Haircuts Not all of the Goldendoodle haircut styles found on this list are meant for every dog. However, you know your dog better than anyone else. I love to see the faces of people when they meet our dogs for the first time! From a week before they are due they are at my side day and all night long. We do not allow the moms to deliver their own puppies, we are there to help them deliver their puppies to eliminate trauma for the mother and for the puppies. We are with the puppies and mom day and night for a week encouraging mom when puppies become too much, just like human moms. Dog moms need reassurance and help as well. Mom and puppies are kept in a confined area that is safe no other dogs are allowed in this area and kept at a specific temperature. Mom and puppy vitals are checked on a regular basis to ensure their health. After 2 weeks mom and puppies are moved to the nursery and given more space to move about and develop their muscle structure. Once the puppies start food they are placed on sheets of non-printed newspapers with shredded paper on top to ensure cleanliness, which is also changed daily.
