So while a dog like a Chihuahua Great Dane mix is possible with medical intervention, looking for purebred black Golden Retrievers for sale will disappoint. Anybody claiming their black puppies are purebreds are likely trying to scam you, so be careful. It is possible that Golden Retrievers get a pigment somatic mutation that can cause a black patch of fur. But this will never make their entire body black. Golden retrievers have a specific genetic makeup that produces their characteristic golden coat color. This means that they can only produce puppies with red or cream-colored coats. In short, if you see a dog resembling a black Golden Retriever, it is probably a different Retriever breed, called the Flat-Coated Retriever, with a signature black coat. The other possibility is that it is a Golden Retriever crossed with another breed with a dominant black gene. Rare colors like Merle could only result from outcrossing with dogs like Australian Shepherds. When two different breeds are bred together, the resulting puppies can inherit a wide range of traits from both parents, making it difficult to predict their temperament, health, and physical appearance. In short, obtaining a puppy from an ethical breeder who is knowledgeable about the breed and committed to producing healthy, well-socialized puppies is always essential. Dogs have various gene pairs called alleles that determine their coat color and patterns. Coat genetics is complicated, so we will only cover the two essential major genes determining Golden Retriever colors. Firstly, black dogs have a kind of pigment called eumelanin, while red or yellow dogs have a pigment called pheomelanin. Goldens only have gene for pheomelanin, which means they can only be shades of red or cream never black. This is unlike their black Labrador or Flat-Coated Retriever cousins that have dominant black coat genes. The gene for black coloring is the E-locus gene, which is a dominant gene. So all purebred Golden Retrievers have a recessive gene that ensures their signature golden cream, yellow, and red coloring. You can only get a black dog from a Golden Retriever parent by crossing them with a dog with a dominant E-locus gene. The problem with this is that the gene for a black coat is a dominant gene, not a recessive one. This dominant E-locus has been bred out of the Golden Retriever bloodline and true Goldens only have recessive genes for cream, yellow, and red coats as per their breed standard. Finally, how rich or intense their color is, is determined by their recessive dilute gene. Dogs with dilute genes will be a light cream color, and those without may be rich dark red color. Help Dogs In Need Our blog posts aim to provide comprehensive, accurate, and objective information on all types of dogs, helping our readers make informed choices that fit their lifestyle. We don't endorse any specific breeding practices, but advocate for ethical breeding and dog welfare. We encourage exploring adoption first. Countless wonderful dogs, from all breeds, await their forever homes in shelters. Remember, with AdoptDontShop, you can give a deserving rescue a second chance at happiness. Just like the black Golden Retriever, silver or blue is not a color that exists in purebred Golden Retrievers. Silver, blue, or gray are dilute versions of the black color gene. To get a Golden Retriever that has this color variation, you would likely have to mix them with a silver dog like a Weimaraner or rare blue German Shepherd or Blue Bay Shepherd. There is no such this as a white or platinum Golden Retriever. English Cream is the lightest color you can get, which is nearly white, but is a very dilute yellow color. It is unclear if any albino Golden Retrievers exist, and if they do, it is exceptionally rare. Albinism in dogs is a genetic mutation where they lack any pigment in the skin. The Flat-Coated Retriever looks exceptionally similar to the Golden Retriever, with glossy black coats instead of shades of gold. These dogs are slightly more independent, have longer noses, have a sleeker build, and are generally more energetic. Are there Green Golden Retriever Puppies? In , the internet went wild over a picture of a newborn green Golden Retriever puppy called Forest. This natural discharge would simply wash off over time. Golden Retrievers are one of many dogs that get patches of pigment on their tongues, causing a black or purple spot. This is usually not more than a birthmark or a freckle and is nothing to worry about. This color is more common in European bloodlines, and some breeders specialize in producing English cream golden retrievers. This color is still considered within the range of acceptable colors for the breed, and it does not represent a distinct genetic mutation or variation. This color is deeper and richer than the typical golden or red shades, and some breeders selectively breed for this color. However, like the English cream color, it is still a standard color for Golden Retrievers. While coat color can be an interesting and appealing aspect of a dog, it should never be the sole reason for choosing a particular breed or breeder. Final Thoughts The idea of a black Golden Retriever or silver or any other color is charming, but there is no way for this to happen in purebred dogs. Suppose you do come across a black golden retriever. Dogs should be bred for health and temperament before color, which is the most important thing to look for when buying any puppy. Alternatively, adopting a rescue dog is always a good option. But every once in a while, you can find a few black hairs on your golden and sometimes it can be a lot more than just a few golden hairs. So, can golden retrievers have black hair? Yes, Golden Retrievers can have black hair due to a somatic mutation that affects the genetic makeup of their hair cells. Then, there are golden retrievers that are totally black. Yes, Black Golden Retrievers are a thing, and you can learn all about them here. In this article, though, we are only going to focus on those stray black hairs on your golden, what they mean, and what you should do about them. Keep reading, it gets very interesting quickly. We have already established that golden retrievers can have black hair, but to really understand why some goldens have some black hair we will need to dig a bit deep into it. The reasons some golden retrievers have black hair is because of a somatic mutation that affects the genetic makeup of the hair cells. For example, German Shepherds usually have brown, black, and white hair. But in White German Shepherds, this gene masks all the colors other than white, making the dog completely white instead of its typical colors. For some golden retrievers, such as the adorable pup in the picture above, this mutations can cause more than one black hair. By the way, goldens tend to change color as they grow older. I have added pictures of all the golden retriever colors and debunked some myths in this post, so make sure to give it a read when possible. I have seen so many golden retrievers with some black hair on them that I believe that most goldens will eventually have some black hair on them at some point in their lives. Goldens do change colors when they start going into their older years, but this change actually makes the hair more gray or white, especially around their faces. Why does my golden retriever have a black spot on fur? This is just a generic error and it happens to a lot of goldens. For example, on their tongue, but this is completely different than having black spots on their coats. Why Does my golden retriever have a black spot on their tongue? Some golden retrievers have black spots on their tongues due to extra pigments of melanin. This is also normal, happens to all breeds, and is not a cause of concern. This is more likely to happen in dog breeds that already have some black coloring in their eyes, lips, paw pads, or toenails. Here is a quick list of some breeds that are also prone to having black spots on their tongue: Akita. Conclusion: do Black Golden Retrievers exist? Does the Black Golden Retriever actually exist? Have you got your heart set on a Goldie but with a jet-black coat? Then sorry to disappoint, but there's not actually such a pup as the Black Golden Retriever. In fact, it's genetically impossible we'll get into that in a bit for a Goldie to have a black coat. There are, however, a couple of mixed breeds and pure breeds which look and act very similar, if not identical, to a Black Golden Retriever. So it may not be a purebred pup, but you can certainly adopt the next best thing. The science behind a purebred Golden Retriever So, this is the part where we prove that Black Golden Retrievers can't exist. According to VCA Animal Hospitals , there are only two pigments that determine every dog's coat color. Weird right? All the different shades our pups can be and it's based on only two basic pigments. These pigments are called Eumelanin black and Phaeomelanin red. Both of these pigments can be modified by various genes inherited from the parent dogs. The MC1R gene the E-Locus controls how much pigment is produced in melanocytes which determines the color of your pup's fur. Still with us? It's genetically impossible for a purebred Golden Retriever to have a black coat. So what colors can Golden Retrievers be? According to the American Kennel Club, Golden Retrievers can be dark golden, golden, and light golden. They don't mention any acceptable markings. Whilst they only mention three colors, there's actually a huge range. You might be able to find a Golden Retriever with a deep red coat and one with a very pale cream one. What about genetic mutations? It is possible for genetic mutations to occur in the Golden Retriever breed which means that your pup could have a black patch of fur. This, however, is rare and wouldn't result in an entirely black coat. It would be a small patch often around the head that would be black in color. It's a little like a birthmark. So what happens if you've seen a Black Golden Retriever puppy for sale? Or you've seen one of these beautiful dogs running around your local park with the pup parent proudly telling you their dog is a Black Golden Retriever? Well, seeing as we know it's genetically impossible, the dog they're referring to is likely to be a mixed breed. It may be a very distant mixed breed and really look like a Golden Retriever with a black coat but it won't be. Both are very energetic dogs that were bred for hunting and love to spend time outdoors exploring woods, ponds, and parks. They're both loving dogs that are loyal to their owners and that can be a little goofy. The main difference between the two breeds is their coat color. Whilst Goldies are always a shade of golden, Flat-Coated Retrievers have black or liver coats. Flat-Coats are also usually a little more athletic looking and slightly taller than Golden Retrievers. They also have flatter coats and may have more feathering around their legs and tails. If you're thinking about adopting a Flat-Coated Retriever as a good substitute for a Black Golden Retriever, it's worth knowing that they're not as good around kids as Goldies are. They tend to be a little more boisterous which might be too much for smaller children. What other breeds look like Black Golden Retrievers? Although not certain, many Golden Retriever mixes inherit the adoring nature of the Goldie parent and will probably need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. If your dog is a Flat-Coated Retriever and Golden Retriever mix, then it will likely be very active, affectionate, and probably quite boisterous. Early socialization is essential for all dogs, as are regular training sessions to keep them engaged and happy. The health of a Black Golden Retriever Again, this really depends on the mix or dog breed you go for. From the list above, all of the mixes and purebred dogs are active pups that need lots of outdoor fun. Exercise isn't just important to maintain a healthy weight, it's also essential for keeping your pup happy. It's also important to feed your dog a nutritious diet that's specially formulated. Trips to the vet can also help to catch any medical conditions early on. The coat of a Black Golden Retriever If you're looking to adopt a dog that looks like a Golden Retriever but with a black coat, then in all likelihood, it will have a thick and slightly wavy coat like Goldies. They'll probably have a soft, downy undercoat and a coarse and waterproof outer coat. Again, this depends on what generation of mix they are or whether they're a different purebred dog. Do Black Golden Retrievers shed? You can expect your Black Golden Retriever lookalike to shed, especially twice a year when they blow their coats. Regular brushing and a bath every so often will help to remove loose hairs. If your pup is part Goldendoodle, they may shed less thanks to their grandparent Poodle's hypoallergenic coat. Black Golden Retriever breeders Whenever you adopt a pooch, it's important to make sure you're getting your dog from an ethical breeder who is breeding for the temperament and health of a dog — not for appearance or coat color. You'll probably be paying a premium for a Golden Retriever mix. You should also remember that black isn't a recognized coat color for Goldies by the AKC, so you won't be able to compete with them. A breeder who is breeding Golden Retrievers with Flat-Coated Retrievers and advertising as such can be trusted. Just so long as they can provide the correct health checks for the dogs and are breeding happy little puppies. Unfortunately no, Black Golden Retrievers do not exist. It's genetically impossible for a purebred Goldie to have a black puppy — so don't trust a breeder telling you otherwise. Whichever kind of pup you adopt, it's likely to need an active lifestyle and plenty of space to play in. With lots of exercise and time to explore, any of these Black Golden Retriever substitutes will be a wonderful addition to your family. Animals have always been a huge part of my life, so writing about dogs is a total pleasure! Can Golden Retrievers be Black? I may think Black Labrador which is close, or even Spaniel or Setter. Pointy ears are Doberman, German Shepherd, or Schipperke. Not that I have ever seen a Schipperke, but you get the picture. But can it be? Can Golden Retrievers be black? If so why call it Golden — it just confuses people like me. So can a Golden Retriever be black? A Golden Retriever can be black. Golden Retrievers can also be chocolate, red, and shades of blonde. The Flat-coated Retriever is also black but it is a different breed than the black Golden Retriever. Black Golden Retrievers do not know they are different. They act just like Goldens. The temperament and personality are all Golden. If you know Golden Retrievers you will see all the endearing traits, facial expressions, playfulness, intelligence, and all else in the Black that you know from the Golden. These dogs are not just off-color, they are completely, seriously, no-doubt-about-it, black. Well, you do get chocolate sometimes called liver colored Golden Retrievers as well. From the standpoint of the two agencies mentioned above, it does. However, if you take purebred to mean that both the parents are Golden Retrievers, then it becomes debatable if black ones are purebred or not. If both parents are Golden Retrievers then what is the black pup? Genetics To talk about the color of Black Golden Retrievers we have to delve into genetics. Coat color in dogs is determined by around eight genes. Some of them directly influence the color itself and others determine the distribution and intensity of the color in the coat. Different combinations of genes produce different colors and different patterns. An example is the black hairs that make up the typical Geman Shepherd face mask. Retriever dogs are a bit different. Only three of the ten genes vary. The other seven are constant. That means although the coat can be different colors, the dogs can not have dark masks, points, ticking, spots, or brindling. If your dog does, talk to your breeder. Something is fishy! One of the three gene pairs they always sit in pairs on the chromosome determines the depth or richness of the color. This gene pair is responsible for Golden Retriever coats that look tan, red, deep gold, brown, or almost white. The second pair of genes determine the amount and quality of dark pigment in the coat. This results in a black or chocolate or liver coat. Gene pair number three are the jokers in the pack. They sit at a completely different place on the chromosome than pair number two. This pair determines whether the black pigment resulting from pair number two genes are produced or not. Now we get to the technical part. Golden Retrievers have a golden coat because both the genes in number three pair are recessive, not dominant. The golden coat is produced because the two recessive genes stop the black pigment resulting from pair number two from developing in the hair follicle. The outcome is that the coat hairs grow out yellow. Golden Retrievers that do end up with a chocolate-colored or black coat have at least one dominant gene in pair number three. This means the black pigment can be produced in the hair. To all you geneticists out there, I know this is a bit of an oversimplification, but those who are interested can look up the real terminology. We are back to genetics. It is not a given that two black Golden Retrievers will produce black puppies. Two golden Golden Retrievers, or any variation of golden, will not produce black puppies. If you look back to the explanation above it means that every golden dog must have two recessive genes in pair three, otherwise, it would not be golden. So if you cross two Goldens, both the mother and the father have two recessive genes in pair three. Where would the dominant gene needed to produce a black or chocolate color coat come from? You see? Two golden Golden Retrievers produce golden, yellow or cream puppies. It can not work any other way. For a Golden Retriever to be black it has to have at least one dominant gene in pair three. The puppies inherit one gene from each parent to make up the pair. They need only one dominant gene from either parent in pair three, to turn out black or maybe chocolate. But a pup can strike it unlucky, or lucky depending on the way you look at it. For the parent to be black it can have one dominant and one recessive gene. The pup may inherit the recessive gene from each of its parents, no dominant gene, and voila! A golden puppy from black parents. The Law of Dominance and the Law of Segregation This is probably too late to talk about the Punnett square, heterozygous offspring, and homozygous offspring. In short, it is a diagram that is used to explain how the inheritance of dominant and recessive genes work. It illustrates all that I said above but it gets more complicated when you consider the real-life intricacies of genes and how they are passed on to the next generation. Please stay clear of pieces on the internet talking about alleles if the author is not a qualified geneticist. Skin Color Now it gets even more interesting. Some Golden Retrievers have black noses, eyes, and skin. Why is that? It is all back to genes again. The gene pair number two that is responsible for the black pigment in the hair is also responsible for the black pigment in the skin but the repression of the development of the pigment does not happen the same way as with hair. Suffice to say that usually, a dog with a black nose and any color coat has the dominant genes on the B locus while the lighter colored noses and eyes could be due to a recessive gene on the B locus. My head aches. Read exactly how it works with all the gory details here , according to the eggheads. Related Questions Are black Golden Retrievers more aggressive? There is no evidence that black Golden Retrievers are any more or less aggressive than the other colored dogs. They look more menacing but they are just as friendly and playful as you would expect from the Goldens. How much do black Golden Retrievers cost? Black Golden Retrievers are somewhat scarce. This is expensive but that is what you pay when you get one from a reputable breeder. Trusted by millions of dog lovers worldwide. There is no dog breed that is a Black Golden Retriever. The Flat-Coated Retrievers or mixed breeds have the dominant E allele which produces the black or liver color in skin or fur. The recessive e allele will always produce a coat that is yellow or red in color. But it is possible to have a nearly purebred black Golden Retriever that looks and acts like a golden retriever except for the black color. See 1 below for the explanation as well as some other ways for a dogs to appear to be a black Golden Retriever. For example, a breeder may have crossed a Golden Retriever with a Flat Coated Retriever, then bred the black puppies back to Golden Retrievers. They then kept breeding successive generations of only the black puppies back to Golden Retrievers until the type and personality matched the Goldens Retriever again except for the black coat. This is how many breeds were created in the first place. So the black Golden Retrievers being advertised may or may not be exactly like a Golden Retriever based on how many generations ago the outcross happened. Breeder Warning! If a breeder tries to tell you they are selling AKC registered Black Golden Retrievers, then you should look for another breeder. Listing the wrong dog as a sire or dam is very unethical. A breeder may tell you that their black golden retriever dogs are purebred but not registered. This is controversial as the meaning of purebred is difficult to define. Some consider an outcross more than 5 generations back to be unimportant. While it is ok to purchase these dogs, I would avoid paying extreme prices for what may be a mixed breed dog. An ethical breeder will be happy to explain how the black gene entered their Golden Retriever gene pool. Which means, if this type of genetic mutation occurs in a Golden Retriever it will show up as a black patch on the skin or fur, not the whole coat. Check out this facebook photo of a Golden like this. Sometimes it can be challenging to tell the different breeds apart. In this article we will discuss why the Flat-Coated Retriever and the Golden Retriever are similar, but different breeds. We will also look at the science behind these two breeds and discuss some other breeds that are very similar. If you are looking to purchase a Black Golden, then there are a few breeds to consider. Below we will cover some dogs that appear to be a Black Golden Retriever, but are not. Here are 4 possible breeds that can be mistaken for a black Golden Retriever. They may look and act remarkably like a Golden Retriever, but they are their own breed. They can only be black or liver in color. Check out our article on Flat Coated Retrievers vs. Golden Retrievers. Hovawart A Hovawart looks like a mixed breed of a Golden Retriever and a Rottweiler or Doberman, but they are their own breed. They are larger than a Golden and have about the same body and shape. Newfoundland A Newfoundland is like the Golden Retriever. They have the same blocky head and similar facial expressions. The big difference is they are twice the size and shed twice the amount of fur than Golden Retrievers. They are a mix of a Golden Retriever and another breed. Whether you are looking to purchase a Flat-Coated Retriever, Golden Retriever, or a Mixed Breed Retriever make sure that you are using a reputable breeder that knows the genetic and health background of the parents and the puppy. If they do not have a lot of knowledge about the breed or puppy, it would be best to find another breeder. They are still out there, but you may have to do a little more research to find one. There are some dogs that are a mix of Golden Retriever and another breed. Be sure the breeder provides you with all the necessary information about the different breeds involved as well as health and temperament information. It will not be hard to find one. There are many Goldens out there that need some love. Conclusion Golden Retrievers come in many colors and types. This cross blends the clever, yet amusing side of the poodle with the placid, loyal, loving nature of the golden retriever and Bernese mountain dog. Most golden mountain doodles are low- to non-shedding and are a safe bet for most people with allergies. I wanted to breed the golden retriever back into the bernedoodle because, while there are so many amazing traits within the bernedoodle, I have found that they can be stubborn. By mixing some golden retriever back into the bernedoodle, my hope was that it would reduce this stubborn streak. Golden mountain doodles are very affectionate and easy to train with a playful nature. They are people pleasers, wanting to be by your side and to learn new things. They are social and spirited dogs and have a gentle and patient disposition that makes them great with children. Because they are so easygoing, they are great for first-time dog owners and experienced ones alike. They are the perfect all-around companion. A golden mountain doodle is not a purebred and thus is not a registered breed. The Golden Retriever Golden retrievers are intelligent, large-breed dogs, oftentimes used as gun dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and detection dogs. They are also trained as disability assistance dogs because of their gentle and loving nature and their desire to be with people. Golden retrievers love the water! Golden retrievers have a beautiful dense coat and are known to shed quite heavily. The Bernese Mountain Dog Bernese mountain dogs Berners are completely devoted to their families, with a special fondness for children. In fact, they are so loyal that it can be difficult to re-home an adult Berner. They are exceptionally beautiful dogs and have a distinctive tri-coloured coat. Bred in the Swiss Alps as farm dogs that pulled carts or drove cattle to market, the Bernese thrive in cold weather and have a double coat that sheds quite heavily. They are intelligent, strong dogs who have a moderate need for exercise. A significant number of Bernese are afflicted with hip and elbow dysplasia, or succumb to inherited cancer, heart disease, or epilepsy in middle age. While cancer is the leading cause of death for dogs in general, Bernese have a much higher rate of fatal cancer than other breeds. Overall, the Berner is one of the shorter-lived dog breeds, with a life expectancy of only seven years. This is particularly sad when the Berner is known to be slow in maturing and somewhat challenging to train. Without proper socialization, these naturally cautious and reserved dogs can become skittish and suspicious, and may develop separation anxiety. They can also be decidedly stubborn. Yet, the Bernese also has a deep need to please their humans and are surprisingly sensitive. As a result, training a Berner requires a great deal of patience and a gentle hand. Berners are affectionately known for leaning on people to soak up all the possible attention they can! The Poodle Poodles rank high on the canine intelligence scale and excel in obedience. Most people are aware that this lovely breed has a low- to non-shedding coat, making them a great choice for people with allergies. But the poodle is more than a clever show dog. They originated in Germany as hunting dogs, especially good at water retrieving. A typical poodle thrives in a busy household where there is plenty of attention to go around. If bored, poodles may find their way into mischief. They are also quick to sound an alert, and have earned a reputation for barking. Poodles can be nervous and sensitive to stress and are typically affected by eye, skin, and digestive diseases, as well as immune system diseases. Poodles come in three sizes and a wide variety of colouers. Where most dogs have double coats, poodles have a single-layer coat of dense, curly fur that sheds minimally, but will mat without proper care. If a breeder does their due diligence in selecting the right parents, crossing purebred dogs of different breeds results in puppies that are healthier than either of their parents. This is because breeds are generally prone to different genetic problems. Hybrids such as golden mountain doodles are only likely to inherit a health problem that is common to the poodle, Bernese mountain dog, and golden retriever — three breeds that share few common diseases. A hybrid dog combines the traits and characteristics of its purebred parents; with careful, conscientious breeding, the resulting pups may end up with the best attributes of each. In the case of the golden mountain doodle, the blend of the golden retriever, Bernese, and poodle produces a smart, friendly, loving, social, and playful dog. They tend to have the gentle, loving, and desire-to-please nature of the golden retriever, the laid-back, loving, and loyal nature of the Bernese, and the goofy liveliness and intelligence of the poodle. Most golden mountain doodles have a moderate activity level. Appearance and Coat Golden mountain doodles can often be confused with goldendoodles. Breeders tend to develop their own style and look of dogs. The appearance of a SwissRidge golden mountain doodle is usually stocky with a well-built frame, beautiful head, and silky and wavy coat, although the coats can vary. This breed can have a unique combination of two or three different colours within their coat, but can also be a solid colour. Every golden mountain doodle is different. Within an average litter, we will see that the majority of puppies have wavy coats, and a few have straight or curly coats. Most puppies within the litter shed minimally, if at all. Most people with allergies to dog dander are fine with a wavy or curly-coated dog. Golden mountain doodles with a curly coat are like the poodle and will not shed. While there are no guarantees, even if you have serious allergies to dander, you will do well with a curly-coated golden mountain doodle. Puppies that have a straight coat are very silky and soft, almost like velvet. This is a unique trait that I have only seen in the golden mountain doodle. If you are allergic to dog saliva and your skin breaks out in hives when licked by a dog, you will most likely be allergic to all golden mountain doodles regardless of coat type. If you still want a dog and you are allergic to saliva, I would suggest a tiny dog, as they produce less saliva. Since there are no guarantees with coat type, a responsible breeder will give you time to interact with your puppy and see if you are allergic, allowing you time to return the pup if it is not working out. It is best if you meet some doodles ahead of time, before committing to your own puppy. Since most golden mountain doodles shed little, if at all, they need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting, and must be clipped every few months. Size Golden mountain doodles come in a variety of sizes. At SwissRidge, we breed standard and mini golden mountain doodles. The standard golden mountain doodle results from crossing a goldendoodle with a bernedoodle, or any combination that would create a mixture of golden retriever, poodle, and Bernese. They will generally be 50 lbs or larger and around 23 to 29 inches at the shoulder. Most standards are in the 70 to 90 lb range. A mini golden mountain doodle results from crossing a mini goldendoodle with a mini bernedoodle. They generally range from 25 to 50 lbs and between 18 and 22 inches at the shoulder. Please keep in mind that these sizes are an average, and sometimes a puppy will fall outside the expected height and weight. Mini golden mountain doodles may have a slightly higher energy level than the standards. Since we use calm poodles in our breeding program, we tend to produce docile golden mountain doodles, regardless of size. This breed has the stamina to keep up with an athlete, but is just as happy to lay on the couch all day and chill. They are affectionate, loving family dogs and are good for first-time dog owners. Generations Golden mountain doodles are the F2 generation as two doodles are being crossed to make a golden mountain doodle. F2 is referred to as a second-generation cross, in which an F1 doodle is crossed with another F1 doodle. Health and Lifespan The first SwissRidge golden mountain doodle was bred in , so they are still a young breed. Since I can only estimate on their long-term health, I use their lineage as my guide. They are very healthy and vibrant dogs, and I estimate the average life expectancy to be around 13 years. While golden mountain doodles tend to be healthier than their parent breeds, they can still be prone to conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye problems. Skin conditions, such as hot spots and allergies, are also seen in this mix, and like many other breeds, they may get cancer. Genetic testing can reduce the risk of many diseases. A reputable breeder will perform various tests and provide evidence of the successful results. This investment is usually reflected in the higher cost of the puppy for the buyer. A higher upfront cost will most likely reduce vet bills down the road. Is This Dog for Me? Golden mountain doodles make wonderful family dogs and are suitable for most people. If you want an affectionate, loyal, non-shedding dog that is the light of your world and if you have the time and enthusiasm to raise a puppy, I predict you will be very happy with a golden mountain doodle! Goldens of Influence Goldens of Influence Goldens of Influence………I am sure for those of you who have been in this breed for awhile ……or possibly if you are just starting out……. I had such an experience and within these pages of this portion of my website I will present to you those dogs and bitches, those kennels, who set the stage for what I wanted for my breeding program as well as where I wanted to take Quapaw. When I do not have a picture to share I will tell the short story of the dog that is ever present in my mind. The most difficult part of this journey is where to begin. This want eventually led to RoseAnn Parke of Parkewood Kennels near Indianapolis, IN through a youngster she bred who came to my college psyche class one day with her owner. This meeting brought into my life my first and third Goldens: Copper Shane of Parkewood and my foundation dam, Ch. Their males who influenced my thinking and breeding were: Eng. CH Camrose Cabus Christopher. The bitch that has had the most direct influence has been Eng. CH Westley Victoria. I have always loved the bitches produced by Susan Brown-Leger and Synergold. Some people like to try to categorize my breeding program but if they took the time to look deep enough they would see what I see, all of the above named breeders and dogs have one very important thing in common: the Standard for the breed. These dogs and bitches, in my honest opinion, are some of the best representatives of the Golden Retriever standard no matter which side of the Pond they resided. So many people today seem to be blinded by color in this breed as well as which side of the Pond, when in fact they should be open minded and see the standard that is represented and be breeding to it and not worry about where the dog comes from, but what the dogs have to offer them and most importantly, the breed. On the following pages of this section you will find photos of these dogs and either their pedigrees or links to their pedigrees, as well as some others that are related and I would hope that once you start looking at them closely you will see what I have witnessed all these many years and that is the similarity of type and structure. In doing so, you will then begin to see the similarities of the dogs within my own breeding program. Camrose Tantara who started a line of Champions for several generations, so I feel he should be mentioned here. He was one of my very special dogs who was a real personality boy. The emblem for the Scottish G. Always rather lacking in substance and a menace for me to show! He would go half way down the ring and come to a stop. But he adored Mrs Barron, as his favourite wife was her Ch. Jane of Anbria, so Margaret offered to show him for me, and was instrumental in getting his last 2 CCs to get him his title. He was no oil painting as a puppy, as nothing seemed to be in the right place! Right: Reserve BIS Blackpool Ch Show Toffer was a born showman, and just loved being in the ring, but he had one habit, which I found most embarrassing, in that he would insist in either carrying his leash or the sleeve of my anorak! A natural worker, he was a joy to have on a shoot, as he would never tire, face any cover, and had a wonderful nose. However things changed after she had her first litter, when she really began to look like a Golden, for suddenly she developed a beautiful wavy coat with masses of feathering! Looking at photos of her when she was quite old one can see her very intense waves. However she soon recovered and was able to win the C. That taught me a lesson, never to wear a hat with a brim when judging — at that time we all wore hats for those occasions! He was a very mature youngster, as his puppy photo at10 months shows. He had aprofuse coat, very good construction both ends, and was a super mover, so took the All Rounders eye. After his Junior days, he went through a very teenage stage and was very immature for quite a long time, and took quite a long time to come to his prime. I loved his head which had a super eye and expression — which was much better than that of his sire Christopher. In Best of Show rings she could not stand next to a Bobtail or one similarly coated or she would not show. Memories of some of the early post-war dogs One of the first famous dogs I remember seeing in the ring was Ch. Torrdale Happy Lad — a very glamorous, heavily built extrovert cream dog — beautifully handled by Mr Fred Parsons. One of the first famous dogs I remember seeing in the ring was Ch. The next which impressed me for his type was Ch Dorcas Glorious of Slat his closeness in relationship to my own Tess, was that her dam was his litter sister. He was a compact, wavy coated dog with a lovely head. I must have watched the bitches too, but do not remember them, I suppose because by that time, I had decided I wanted a litter from Tess, so was more interested in selecting a mate for her. Weyland Varley was a really beautiful, masculine dog, with a lovely head and super construction both ends. I awarded him Best of Breed at the first Championship show I judged. He had a lovely temperament and I remember happy days out with his owner, Mrs Morgan, when she was helping me to train my dogs for their Qualifying Certificates Ch. Alresford Advertiser always looked immaculate and was a great showman. A beautifully pale coated dog, of good size, well-made, and an impressive mover. Needless to say Advertiser usually won over my dogs!! However I still awarded him a CC at one of the Birmingham shows. He had super happy temperament and was a dog one liked to stand next to in the ring, as so many at that time were not too pleasant and would growl at other dogs. He had a strong skull, but was rather short in foreface for true balance of head. He was not a big dog, but was very compact and had super hindquarters, a lovely pale coat and was very glamorous. He was a good sized dog — very pale coloured — and with lots of substance and bone. I was the first person from the south of England to use this dog — to improve my hindquarters — and he produced a litter for me with 3 Champions in it, which had his rear end but retained my very good fronts! Camrose Nicholas of Westley was a cream dog of lovely type and character. I remember taking his sire Ch. William of Westley to a show in Blackpool for Joan who was in hospital at the time , and having a nightmare journey with him. He was a very energetic dog and would not keep still in the train overnight, and when walking to the show drove me mad, as he insisted on lifting his leg at every corner, tree or lamppost we came to! Later Miss Gill returned the compliment for me by taking Ch. I hope that this article enables you to find out something interesting about some of the influential dogs of the past, and is of some help to those of you who have these dogs in your extended pedigrees. Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Ohio? Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. White markings tend to be determined by the genes on the S locus. The white areas tend to be at the tip of the tail, end of the muzzle, breastbone, or paws. This is known as residual white. The cause may be unknown or may be due to a minor illness in the mother. This transition occurs when the pup is around months old and sheds his soft fluffy coat. This process can happen quickly or may take a few months. You may also see changes in the pattern. Nonetheless, she had many white markings across her chest as a puppy, which soon blended into her thick adult coat. Below is a picture of her at three months old. My 3-month-old German Shepherd Willow showing off her white chest markings! German Shepherds can have white paws. It usually appears on the tips of the paws. This study determined that the variant was associated with one or more spotting patterns in many dog breeds, including the German Shepherd. Regarding paws, white spotting can occur on one paw, all four, or any combination. What is a Panda German Shepherd? So, what exactly are they? They tend to have symmetrical markings of white forelock, muzzle, chest, belly, collar, and tail tip. The amount of white coloring can vary from dog to dog. They are typical-looking German Shepherds, other than their color, and have the same temperament and traits. The first-ever recorded Panda mutation occurred relatively recently in a female GSD in the year .Although these dogs look like they have Irish spotting consisting of white muzzle blazes and Border Collie-type markings, they are very different. This is due to being caused by the mutated dominant KIT gene. The gene that causes Irish spotting is yet to be identified. This allows German Shepherd breeders to establish whether the KIT gene mutation causes white patterning. There are often misunderstandings about whether German Shepherds with white markings can enter dog shows. However, this is a difficult question and depends entirely on the breed standard of the individual country. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified. However, they are still allowed to be registered as purebred. They are also still permitted to participate in events, such as herding trials, tracking, and obedience. However, the consensus is inconspicuous white markings would not disqualify the dog from conformation. The UK Kennel Club also recognizes the all-white German Shepherd but states they are highly undesirable for conformation. However, they also refer to dogs having white markings. There are many varieties of coat colors in the German Shepherd breed. These are the main ones:. Certain breeds, including dogs with white feet are at risk for being unable to process a number of drugs. Why does this happen? The answer is that it is all about the DNA. This gene like all genes has a function. The MDR1 gene codes or makes a protein called P-glycoprotein. P-glycoprotein is important because it is a drug transport pump. In other words, it plays a major role in distribution, metabolism, and excretion of many drugs. Dogs that have a defective or mutant MDR1 gene have defective P-glycoprotein, and therefore have delayed excretion of certain drugs. This means that drugs can build up in their body's causing toxicity. What breeds are affected, that is who has the mutant MDR1 gene? Classically the herding breeds are affected, with 70 percent of Collies being affected! Other breeds include the German Shepherd, herding breed crosses, and the long haired Whippet. Interestingly, less than 5 percent of Border Collies are affected. There are several commonly used drugs in veterinary medicine that are affected by the mutant MDR1 gene. These drugs include ivermectin, acepromazine, and butorphanol. When these drugs are used in affected patients, the drugs are not excreted and hence build up in the system leading to toxicity. Taking this one step further, these same affected patients can have trouble eliminating chemotherapy drugs. Cancer fighting drugs often are quite potent and would cause serious toxicity in this group of patients. Fortunately there is testing to determine if a patient has the mutant MDR1 gene. In fact this testing should be a prerequisite in any dog with white feet prior to chemotherapy. Conversely certain cancer patients have a surplus of the normal MDR1 gene resulting in a faster clearance of medications. These patients will have drug resistance because the drugs are eliminated too quickly. As we can see genetics is playing a bigger part of understanding appropriate patient care. Any dog can be tested for the mutant gene, and breeds at risk likely should be tested. The test is a simple blood sample or cheek swab. The future will bring more genetic testing and allow veterinarians to be more specific for each individual patient. Click on the Donate Now button. You can choose how your donation will be used! She is the last little one left, and after seeing her I think I know why. She has white markings on her toes, chest, and a small white patch on her chin? Will these spots go away? Will the fade? What caused the spots? She is the only one out of the 10 pups with the white markings. Take a look at this dog. He is considered the first German Shepherd. His grandfather on his mother's side was a white German Shepherd. Eliminating that from the gene pool through selective breeding is part of why GSD's have so many health problems. If you like the puppy, go buy it, raise it, train it, most importantly enjoy it and provide it an excellent, life-long home, then the pup can wear its white markings as a badge of honor! As I have never seen this. And he is absolutely beautiful and wonderful. I don't care about breeding or showing. She would be a family pet and loved even with her white marks. There have been many top famous dogs with a little white on the chest and toes. Often it gets less noticed with age as the dog gets bigger. Good luck! The white gene is a recessive masking gene that causes the dog to be completely white. I bought a pup that had white marks on her toes and chest. Her pigment faded badly by her second birthday. So, beware, if you are planning to show this dog, it is NOT a good candidate for the show ring! Look at the nails. If they are white, the dog is lacking in pigment, and will likely fade as it gets older. If they are black and look like they've been dipped in India ink, it will be okay. Here's my pup at 8 weeks: and here's what she looks like now: by GSD Lineage on 02 April - Here is a nice pup. You can have a large blanket and white feet. Look at the parents! However, these numbers are not set in stone, as some pups do grow faster, and some a bit slower. From there on, their growth will slow down significantly. Around the time they are 18 to 24 months old, Boxers finish growing. Naturally, larger Boxers will reach their adult size later than Boxers on the lower end of the scale. However, all Boxers will continue to gain girth and fill up their chest cavities well over their first birthdays. If their paws look disproportionately big compared to the rest of their body, they still have some growing to do! Boxer is a medium to large sized breed with a boxy chest and muscular body. What you should never overfeed a dog? You should never ever overfeed your dogs too much carbs as they get stored as fat in the body if they are not used. Unfortunately, carbohydrates are much cheaper an ingredient as compared to the other nutrients like protein. Hence, they are often used by major large dog food manufacturers to make up the weight of dog food whilst keeping the prices of the dog food low. This is the main reason why pets all over the United States are getting obese. And, ironically, this became the driving forces behind the rise of these healthy pet food startups , as their founders seek to provide their own proper and much healthier alternatives. The high fiber content will make your dogs feel content faster and thus eat less. And since fiber does not get stored in the body like carbs do, it can be promising measure to keep your pooch's weight under control. Mathematically, eating less will reduce weight gain. However, it can easily lead to malnourishment if your dog is not given the proper nutrition. We are talking about nutrients beyond the common proteins and carbohydrates. They include omega fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, amino acids and many more! The key here is not to eat less. The key here is to maintain a balanced diet. And what constitutes a balanced diet? That requires a deep understanding and a wide study in the field of pet nutrition to truly determine it; so much that it warrants a university degree. To get the most balanced, holistic and healthiest dog foods , it is often better to leave it to the experts. Have you been scheduling your dog's meal time wrongly? And does it really matter? Scheduling your dog's meal time will tune their stomach to become hungry only at their meal times. Combining this with the right amount of dog food given to them, it will keep your dogs from becoming hungry out of meal hours. In turn, this will maintain their metabolism rate and utilize all the food they consume fully and appropriately. As a bonus, regular meal time will also discourage them from scavenging around the house like little vacuum cleaners as they grow accustomed to the amount of food they are given and to be used for the intervals between meal times. These food brands are not your typical corporate pet food manufacturers. Brachycephalic syndrome increases their risk of respiratory distress, allergies, heatstroke, and sinus problems. Regular veterinarian appointments are crucial in finding and treating illness early to give your Boxer the healthiest and longest life possible. Unfortunately, veterinary bills can be costly with many treatments for emergencies and illnesses, such as heart problems, being thousands of dollars to treat. When surveyed, .The financial safety net provided by pet insurance is why pet insurance is worth it for many pet parents. Keep in mind that even healthy behaviors, like exercise, can be overdone. With a good work ethic, playful demeanor, and a goofy face, this dog breed ranks among the top 10 in the USA for a while now. Their nobility and elegance came to focus after the originally working breed Boxer became unemployed during the early 19th century. The breed name derives from the way they defend themselves with their paws while playing. It really appears as the dog spars with the front paws. There is no doubt one might be tempted to get bring home one of these loving fellas. The growth in dogs has much to say about their health and potential — but how? While growing up dogs that suffer from some diseases might stagnate more than others. Boxers are a medium to large dog breed and are pretty safe from the usual bone and muscle disorders in larger dogs. However, hip dysplasia remains one of the most common issues. Reputable breeders will let you meet the parents and give you contacts from owners of puppies born in previous litters. Most Boxer puppies will correspond just fine to the ranges mentioned for their age. It is super important to not rush the growing process. Dogs that are overweight can experience problems later on in life that might have been avoided by maintaining an appropriate body condition. Moreover, the veterinarian can have the pup checked for possible health conditions causing the slow growth. Photo by otsphoto on Shutterstock Even with late bloomers, there is no reason to worry. Some dogs experience growing episodes sooner than others. The same rules apply to puppies that grow too fast. Damage due to wrong feeding can be avoided by using high-quality premium food and sticking to the recommendations according to weight and age on the labels. Never miss out on consulting your vet on the topic first — they will be glad to guide you through it! Boxer Growth Stages Until they reach adulthood, Boxers go through 3 growth stages. The general difference between the growth stages is how fast the puppy grows during the period and how they appear in posture and body condition. The first stage is from birth until they are 2 weeks of age. After the second week, the growth rate slows down. Most breeders wean the puppies off around the 4th-5th week. At 18 months of age, you can probably introduce your companion as a fully developed, curious, and independent adult Boxer. Boxer puppies have somewhere between 2. At the end of the first stage, they can reach around 4. At 1 month of age, their stuffed muscle figure comes at about 5. By the time they are 16 weeks old, males weigh lbs .Male Boxers are expected to have approximately lbs .In the next six months, the growth slows down to about lbs 0. Male Boxers should weigh around lbs kg by the time they reach 6 months of age. Female boxer puppies are expected to have lbs kg when they are half a year old. Since the Boxer qualifies as a medium to large breed, it takes longer for them to reach their full-sized version compared to other smaller breeds. There are exceptions when Boxers complete the growth at 20, even 24 months. Female Boxers that are done growing up weigh approximately lbs kg and stand .Their male counterparts have between 60 and 70 lbs kg and are 23 to 25 inches cm tall. In the meantime provide quality food, regular exercise, and maintain regular veterinary check-ups to ensure their well-being. As with all other dog breeds, some adult Boxers will be smaller than the standard dimensions of the breed. On the other hand, there is a handful of those that are larger than the standard too. Genetics is the most probable cause for this. Rarely do Boxers end up being smaller than the rest due to low production of the growth hormone. Luckily growth hormone problems in Boxers are very rare and other breeds such as the Miniature Pinscher, Spitz, or Karelian Bear Dog are more prone to the condition. Growth defects in dogs can appear due to Dwarfism Achondroplasia. Minor deformities can be surgically corrected, but again with a dubious prognosis. In Conclusion Understanding the growth chart will help you understand what role nutrition, diet, and exercise plays and adjust accordingly. Getting rid of excess weight or ruling out health issues is something you and your vet can work on together. When your doggo is between six and eight weeks old, they should also prepare for their first vaccinations. Males should be around 17 to 19 inches .At one year old, females should weigh between 55 and 65 pounds .Many factors are involved. For your doggo to maintain a healthy lifestyle, monitoring their growth and weight is a good idea. How can you tell how big a Boxer will get? Within the first six months of age, your Boxer will grow rapidly. You can tell how big your pooch may get by looking at their paws and head. For example, your furry friend may look disproportionate for a while. However, some parts of their body will catch up to the rest within a few months or even a few weeks. Is your Boxer at a healthy weight? You can typically tell whether or not your Boxer is at a healthy weight by their ribs. But, on the other hand, if you can feel and see their ribs, they may be underweight. Always check with your vet to be on the safe side. What are some Boxer dog body shape changes? Boxer puppies grow in height faster than their weight gain. When this dog breed matures and becomes an adult, they will have a wide chest. But, overall, Boxer is strong and lean. In addition, different factors are involved when it comes to impacting how your dog grows. In addition, reputable breeders should have this information. The nutrition you feed your pooch can help or hinder their growth. For example, if you feed them dog food with unhealthy fillers and lots of fat, they may become obese, thus hurting their growth and overall health. Will neutering or spaying your Boxer affect their growth? Spaying or neutering your Boxer has more pros than cons. For example, some health conditions may include hip dyslexia, bloat, acne, arthritis, and cancer. The best way to ensure your pooch remains healthy is to work together with your veterinarian. Take your dog to regular vet appointments at least once per year for an annual check-up. In addition, talk to your vet about the type of dog food and exercise your Boxer should be getting. If your doggo is overweight or underweight, the vet will be able to help. Finally, properly groom your doggo. Physical activity Boxers need plenty of room to run around and stretch their legs. However, they love to play and enjoy a round of fetch with you in a fenced-in yard. Just be sure to wait until their bones and joints are fully developed before taking them for jogs or hikes. Otherwise, they could have joint issues later in life. Dangers of stunted or accelerated growth If your Boxer is a little bigger or small than the others of its breed, that may not necessarily be a bad thing. However, some issues can occur. For example, your pooch may be smaller due to a growth hormone deficiency. This controls the growth rate in dogs, their bone and teeth development and maintains a healthy coat. Dwarfism could also be the reason. When do Boxers stop growing? You can expect your Boxer to be fully grown and stop growing between 18 and 24 months of age. This system works on a scale of one to nine. One means your pup is underweight and unhealthy. Nine means they are extremely overweight. The ideal place on the scale where you want your large dog to be is a five. What should you do if your Boxer is growing too fast? Growth disorders can occur in larger dogs, such as Boxers. If you notice your dog growing too fast, talk to your vet first. How to help your Boxer lose weight if he is overweight? This includes their diet and exercise. Take a look at what dog food you feed your pooch. In addition, do you feed your doggo people food and table scraps? Do Boxer mixes vary in size? If you want to learn more, you can read about Boxer mixes here. How Big Is Your Boxer? These happy doggos are a delight to have around. Boxers are great companions dogs for anyone young or old. Welcome to New England Bernedoodles we are a family-owned breeder of exceptional Bernedoodles. We breed for temperament, trainability, and affectionate, lovable companions for any family. We started with this breed after having Australian Labradoodles for many years. However, the shedding and the largeness of the breed were off putting. We decided to put our understanding of genetics to work and combine quality, loving, gentle Bernese Mountain dogs with smart, affectionate poodles to produce Bernedoodles here at New England Bernedoodles. We are also producing the Australian Bernedoodle. Yes, they really are low to non-shedding. We here at New England Bernedoodles breed specifically for temperament so we know that our bernedoodles will excel in gentleness, trainability, love and sweet demeanor. Our bernedoodles have exceptional beautiful coats. There is nothing like snuggling up close to your New England Bernedoodle. New England Bernedoodles strive for excellence and we produce puppies that are extremely intelligent, abundantly affectionate and forever your best friend. Winston demonstrates eagerness to please and loves to spend time training. Lee and family do such a great job socializing their pups that Winston acclimated to our household of 3 cats and a 6 year old labradoodle within hours! He is a very loving little guy and clearly had a great start at Berkshire Poodles! Could not have made a better choice in breed of dog and breeder. After only a little over 2 weeks she has blossomed into such a sweetheart. She has continued to amaze me with her intelligence. She was going in and out of crate after 3 days and now I have her actually jumping up at string of bells on door and barking to go out. She has not had an accident in the house in over 5 days. Thank you Lee, for such a wonderful companion. She walked on the leash pretty much like she had been doing it all her life! Got her home and she adapted so quickly! What an awesome pup! Lee and his wife were so kind and accommodating we couldn't ask for a better transition! Would recommend this breeder to anyone looking for a great poodle! They obviously love their dogs! Crystal Dewey We really had a good experience with Lee and his father in regards to picking out our puppy and having the information and local references we needed about her health and care. She was an adorable puppy and has turned into a well behaved loving member of the family. She's a beautiful dog too and gets compliments everywhere we go. Ginny Our Pally, now nine months old, is a delight in every way. She is smart, curious and very affectionate. She is never aggressive with anyone, human or canine; she just loves to be companionable and learn new things about the world. She has one weakness: socks. But if you keep your sock drawer closed, she is a practically perfect poodle. Get in touch. Berkshire Poodles. Questions about Poodle puppies for sale in Massachusetts? We have answers. For dogs under the age of 7 years, visit your vet every year. The vet will check for signs of illness, keep them up to date on vaccines, and will treat your dog for parasites and worms. Dogs that are over the age of 7 years should visit the vet every 6 months. The vet will check for signs of illness, keep them up to date on vaccines, and will treat for parasites and worms. Responsible dog owners get their pets vaccinated regularly, wormed, and treated for parasites such as fleas. Vaccination is essential even if you carry your toy poodle everywhere, or he rarely goes outside. This is because some infections such as parvovirus are caused by particularly hardy viruses that can attach to your shoes. Therefore, they can still pose a risk to even the most pampered of poodles. Talk with your vet about implanting a microchip in your dog. A microchip will help you track the dog if he gets lost. One of the health problems that toy poodles are prone to in later life is diabetes mellitus sugar diabetes. The hormones associated with estrous heat in the female can trigger diabetes. Therefore, it is wise to get your female toy poodle spayed. Toy poodles often live into their teens. Each time a bitch has a season, it weakens the lining of her womb and makes her more likely to develop a pyometra, which is a potentially life-threatening womb infection. Thus, spaying whilst she is fit and strong removes the possibility of needing emergency surgery in later life when anesthesia can pose a higher risk. Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell. Neutering a male is mainly done to prevent unwanted breeding and to control behavioral issues such as aggression or dominance. Talk with your vet to learn more. Small but resilient, toy poodles often live well into double figures. They do however tend to suffer from health issues as they age. Diabetes, poor teeth and heart disease are most common. These issues, once identified, can often be managed in order to help your pet live a long and active life. If you see any of these symptoms, speak to your vet. You also give it to him to reward him when he has obeyed an order or when he has been wise, or when you return from a long absence… Giving a treat to your Poodle is a way to communicate with him, to convey a message, to make him understand something. It is also a way to strengthen the emotional bonds you have with your child. However, these treats must be given in moderation so that your Poodle does not become obese or obsessed with these treats… In addition, they must be nutritionally balanced and adapted to your Poodle so as not to risk making him sick. In the article below, we will help you to select the best dog treats for Poodle that you can buy and give without fear but always in moderation! When to give a treat to your Poodle? He is not hungry, it is not mealtime, he will be happy but will not understand why you give him a treat… If you do, instinctively your Poodle will be tempted to come and ask again and again for this treat and if you give in, he will think that he only needs to ask for it to get. Certainly, this helps you to feel a little guilt-free, but the risk is to give your Poodle too many treats. Indeed, if you leave 10 times during the day, he will expect to have a treat at each departure… and this, every day… The advice in this case is to give treats only for long absences and only in a Kong that will keep him busy for a long time. It is wise to associate sweets with reward and therefore with obedience behaviours. The treat is then an educational tool. You make your Poodle work and reward him by offering him snacks. Indeed, regularly giving sugar or sweet foods to your Poodle predisposes it to diabetes mellitus. Just as in humans, the risks associated with dog diabetes are all equally serious and serious: long-term vision loss, obesity, behavioural disorders… Among the sweet products, one is to be absolutely and definitively prohibited: chocolate. Indeed, it contains theobromine, a substance that is dangerous for Poodle, capable of causing fatal poisonings if ingested in high doses. Indeed, the risk is to give in addition to your daily ration an additional food too rich in fat and too energetic. This would very quickly lead to an overweight problem that could have serious consequences on the health of your Poodle. What good treats to give to your Poodle? The ideal is to choose treats specially designed for dogs. They are, for the most part, developed by veterinarians and offer all the guarantees regarding the intake of vitamins, proteins and minerals. Pork ears, bones, chewing sticks can satisfy your companion while avoiding excesses. Some of them are even designed to specifically meet the needs of dogs according to their breed, size and age. But the products are numerous and not all of good quality…. For their size: Indeed, they are very small. This way, you can give it more often in very small quantities without any real impact on the weight of your Poodle. These little bites are perfect to reward your dog at any time. For their composition because if they are natural, without artificial colours or flavours. They are not caloric only 3 kcal and are perfectly adapted to the Poodle. For their soft texture that makes them ideal for small or older dogs. And because they are made in USA! The comments also indicate a very small price that is much appreciated. Finally, the gourmet side of these sweets is reflected in many comments. For example, one Internet user says that his dogs love them and that thanks to these sweets, he gets a lot of results for the basic orders of his Poodle. Why choose these bones for your Poodle? The ideal chew bone to diversify rewards Indeed, you must associate a type of treat according to the reason for the reward. If the expectation you have of your Poodle is important and difficult for him, his reward should be of great value. Save the mini-treats for basic repetitive learning and reward with a larger treat when your Poodle has accomplished or obeys in a more exceptional way. As it will take him a long time to trim it, this award has a strong added value for your Poodle. The 6 Best Types of Toys for a Poodle Overview If you think of dog toys as needing to serve as tools to meet a Poodle's needs, you may be surprised at how amazingly helpful they can be. The right toys can help a great deal with everything from teething woes, to negative behavior associated with boredom. In addition, toys can serve as a method of creating a closer bond with your Poodle, encourage activity in an otherwise sedentary dog, and even boost a Poodle's brain power. Here we will take a look at the 6 types of toys every Poodle should have to meet a wide variety of canine needs. Teething begins by 3 to 4 months old and lasts until the 7 to 8 month mark. During this time, there are incredible amounts of itching and most puppies feel some level of discomfort. This causes an overwhelming need to chew to soothe those teething woes. For these reasons, one of the best things that you can do is find the right toys for your teething Poodle puppy. Qualities of effective teething toys: The oral sensations that a puppy feels can move from moment to moment. Discomfort waxes and wanes. And itching can come in waves. So, toys need to be very versatile. The best toys will have: A variety of surface textures. Cloth, rope, and hard rubber should be available to meet chewing urges at any one particular time. Rope toys are especially helpful, as the twisted strands are good 'scratchers'. Small nubs. This is of particular importance; tiny nubs work to massage gums which helps the pup feel better. A puppy needs to be able to manipulate the toy into different parts of his mouth. Proper sizing. This is most relevant to toy Poodles, since many dog teething toys are sized too big for a tiny toy's mouth. If a Poodle puppy cannot instantly find relief, he may move onto something else.Recommended teething toys: Below are our 1 most recommended toys for Poodle pups that are in the throes of teething. The first 3 are for toy Poodles, though larger options can be found for miniatures and standards. The Nylabone is just one example of great teething chews that are flavored to entice a puppy to mouth them and come in a wide range of sizes, to accommodate all Poodle varieties. If you do not see the images, try a refresh. On mobile, you may need to turn the screen horizontal to see all 4. And if this describes your Poodle, no doubt you have had a hard time finding the right toys that will stand up to aggressive chewing. A dog's urge to chew is not limited to toys; with this type of drive, nothing is off limits. If a Poodle is not happy with his toys, one of two things will happen: 1 the dog will move on to other objects in the house, which is not only destructive but also unsafe or 2 the dog will become irritable and stressed as he's unable to satisfy his urges. Qualities of the best toys for strong chewers: To meet your Poodle's needs, the goal will be to provide fun chew toys that are specifically designed to handle aggressive chewers. While no toy is literally indestructible, some come very close. The toy will need to: Be able to stand up to high bite force. Be safe - A great feature to look for is a color indicator that the toy has been chewed down too far. Some toys are guaranteed, meaning that if a color starts to show, you'll get a free replacement. Fun - If it does not have the right texture and pliability to feel good in a Poodle's mouth, it'll be of no use. Recommended toys for Poodles that are super aggressive chewers: For this, both Kongs and Doughnuts are the two best options, with Kongs being the best for toy Poodles images are below. Kongs are great because they come in a wide range of sizes that will be appropriate for toys, minis, and standards. These are color coded, with pink and blue for puppies, red for 'normal' adult chewers, and black is reserved for the strongest chewers. In other words, a puppy would never be able to bite down on a black Kong dog toy and an aggressive chewer could tear up a pink one. The 'classic' Kong is designed to be filled with treats or kibble, which draws a dog to it and encourages him to stay focused. If your Poodle likes to chew, but has not shown a history of shredding toys to bits, you may find that the Kong 'minimally stuffed' chew toys are well received. These are also great because they come in all sizes from small to large. Goughnuts are colored coded as well, with yellow, orange, and green for strong chewers PSI and black reserved for professional grinders at a whopping PSI. What is great about these is that they are guaranteed. Each has red in the middle. If you see even a tiny spot of red, you may return the toy for just the cost of shipping out a new one. There are 3 sizes as well; but these will be a bit too large for most toy Poodles. Toys are shown below. And in this sense, thinking of toys as 'stay busy' tools can make a huge difference in your Poodle's happiness level. When a puppy or dog is just sitting around without anything to do, he will reach a limit where boredom turns into frustration. And where monotony turns into depression. If your Poodle has been too bored, you may not even realize it until you hand over a super-fun, interactive toy and see him perk up. Alternatively, some Poodles are very expressive about how they feel. It must be noted that regular exercise plays a role in this as well. If your Poodle is not taken out twice per day for at least minute sessions, even the best of toys may not fix his woes. So, a good balance of getting outside for walks and offering the right toys during down-time is the best fix. Qualities of the best toys to fix boredom and keep a Poodle occupied: You'll want toys that will be perfect for both when a Poodle is home alone and also when you are home but cannot interact with your Poodle at the moment. These toys should: Allow a Poodle to play fully independently; you will not need to do anything else other than point out the toy if you are there. Call out to the puppy or dog. A huge aspect is that the toy interacts with the dog. In this way, playing is a two-way street. The dog noses the toy, the toy responds. The dog chews the toy, the toy reacts. This type of element can keep a dog busy for a long time, basically until he's completely tuckered out. Recommended 'stay busy' toys for Poodles: There ares some incredibly fun options. The Babble Balls toys are out of this world; these are super interactive toys that can keep a puppy or dog amused and busy for hours. There are 3 sizes small for toys, medium for minis, and large for standard Poodles. Also, there are two fun types. One lets out animal noises. So, as a Poodle touches the toy, engaging sounds like pigs, frogs, bears, birds, even other dogs speak to him. There are 20 different animal sounds in all. The other is just as wonderful. It lets out funny phrases such as 'Come here, puppy! There are 20 amusing, encouraging phrases in all. For both of these, the toys automatically shut off when not in use, so the batteries do not run out. The Look Who's Taking line of toys is super fun as well. There are over 15 different types of stuffed animals, and each one makes a corresponding animal noise. These are good sized quality toys that stand up to daily playing. The size of these toys range from 5" the baby chick to 7" the cow and a bunch in between. There is a parrot, frog, rooster, monkey, goat, lobster, and more. These toys are shown below. These serve two purposes in one swoop. As an added benefit, if you place your Poodle's food in this sort of toy on days that you are not home, it helps prevent bloat, a dangerous health condition fast eating is a common trigger , which is a top concern for standard Poodles and is always something to be aware of no matter what type or size dog you have. Qualities of great treat-release toys: There are a few aspects to keep in mind. For this type of toy to do its job, it should: Hold in treats enough that they are not released too easily, but at the same time allow a Poodle to smell them in order to trigger a response. Be designed to work with a variety of different dog treats so that you are not forced to purchase additional treats. Be made with safe materials. Be durable to stand up to daily use. Be easy to clean since you'll want to be able to rinse away food particles. Be sized correctly. It's not uncommon for owners of toy Poodles to have trouble finding treat dispensing toys for their tiny dogs, so for these Poodles, it must fit the needs of dogs 10 lbs. Recommended treat dispensing toys for toy, mini and standard Poodles: There are some great options for all Poodles images below. Busy Buddy makes two treat release toys. The barnacle toy is perfect for toy Poodles, even puppies. It is composed of 3 tiny separate spheres, so toy Poodle can easily mouth onto one of them at a time. If you like the looks of this one, but don't have a toy Poodle, no worries. The other type is the twist sphere, which is adjustable, so you can control how easy or hard it is for your Poodle to get to the treats. This comes in small for dogs 8 to 20 lbs. The IQ Treat Ball is a great toy for toy Poodles on the larger end, minis and standards; this is available in both 3 and 4 inch diameters. It's a neat little sphere that is adjustable and releases food as it's nudged which encourages a dog to move. The Bob-A-Lot is a good-sized toy that is best suited for mini and standard Poodles. This has a large chamber that holds a full meal, and its bright color and wobbly movements make eating fun. Distress and even panicking when owners are away is referred to as separation anxiety, and this is not uncommon with dogs. In fact, it may be even more so with breeds like the Poodle due to their instinctive sensitivity and close human bonding. So, while all toys are important in their own way, perhaps the one type that can make the most dramatic impact on a Poodle is a companion toy. These will mimic a living creature to become an instant friend. With this, a dog is no longer alone. In addition, it would be remiss to not mention webcam devices that allow you to interact with your Poodle when you're not there. These are quite amazing, though are not fitting for those on a tight budget. Qualities of best companion toys: There's no competition here and there's no comparing. The very best ones are Smart Pets; these are good-sized quality stuffed animals that emit a rhythmic, soothing heartbeat. This alone instantly swoops away heavy feelings of isolation. In addition, is an option to send out a comforting warmth. This is as close as you can get to giving your Poodle a companion without obtaining another dog, and these are just marvelous. Qualities of the best pet webcams: Not very long ago, there were some sparse choices for this; however, the features where quite limited. Now, there's some truly amazing devices. While these can be a bit pricey, if you really want to go all out and come the absolute closest you can to being with your Poodle when you're not with him, the webcam will: Have two-way audio so that you can both speak to your Poodle and hear any barking in response. Have a wide-angle view and night vision, so that you can clearly see your puppy or dog at all times and under any sort of lighting though it is always recommended to keep lights on for a dog that's home alone. Easily sync to your smartphone Hold a good number of treats, so that the interaction can be frequent and extended. Toss treats out with a tap on your phone, and at a good distance to make it clear that you're playing with your Poodle. Our 1 recommend companion toys and a super-neat interactive webcam are below. If you don't see the images, try a refresh. On mobile, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4. It's what they live for. So, no matter how busy the day may get, the best thing you can do for your Poodle is to make time each day to play. It can be as little as 15 minutes, and it will mean the world. And do not discount older adults and even seniors. The need to hold onto bonds is stronger than ever. However, it's not uncommon for a Poodle to need something colorful and interesting to get really involved with a game of fetch. You'll want it to be durable and importantly the right size so that your Poodle can easily mouth it. Another option that is great to play on rainy days are puzzle games. With this, you work together as a teacher and student. You'll teach your Poodle how to nose levers and paw buttons to find hidden treats. There is something to be said about the Poodle ranking 2 in intelligence ; this is indeed a super smart breed. However, dogs are as smart as opportunity allows. For these, you'll want to pay attention to the level typically 1,2 and 3 or beginner, intermediate, and advanced so that the puzzle is doable. Recommended super-fun fetch toys and a fun puzzle game are below this one is level 2, but there are lots of options. All rights reserved. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Oklahoma? Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Jim T. Cedar Lane Bulldogs — My Story Long before I became an English bulldog breeder in Oklahoma, my interest in bulldogs started in when my father-in-law gave us our first bulldog. We eventually bred her, and she became a mother of nine bulldog puppies. From that point on, I began to show and breed my bulldogs over the span of 12 years. In , I went to work for General Motors, and between working, raising kids, and putting them through school, I decided that placing my bulldogs into good, loving homes was the best option for them. When all of my children finished college in , I purchased several bitch puppies from excellent bloodlines and built a very nice kennel. I truly believe that the bitch is the backbone of a great breeding program, and since , I have proudly finished ten homebred champions to become a Hall of Fame Breeder. I also received my AKC judging license in to be able to judge this wonderful breed, and have since established myself as the leader in breeding English bulldog puppies for sale in Oklahoma. I would also like to recognize the time and effort that my partner in California, Joyce Wolfe, has put into showing and finishing several of the dogs we bred together. This has been a large contributing factor to me being able to achieve the Hall of Fame Breeder status. Additionally, Joyce was responsible for helping me obtain three outstanding stud dogs, furthering my efforts as a champion-quality English bulldog breeder in Oklahoma. I would like to introduce a full partner with Cedar Lane Bulldogs: Randy Byrd has been a dog lover and breeder from a very young age. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. Cheyletiella Dermatitis Walking Dandruff : This is a skin condition that is caused by a small mite. If you see heavy dandruff, especially down the middle of the back, contact your vet. The mites that cause this condition are contagious, which means all pets in the household need to treated. A diagnosis of PDE can only be made by testing the brain tissue of the dog after it dies. PDE usually affects young dogs, causing them to seizure, circle, become blind, then fall into a coma and die. This can happen in a few days or weeks. They are prone to a condition called idiopathic epilepsy : seizures for no known reason. If your Pug has seizures, take him to your vet to determine what treatment is appropriate. Nerve Degeneration : Older Pugs that drag their rear, stagger, have trouble jumping up or down, or become incontinent may be suffering from nerve degeneration. Since their front legs often remain strong, some owners buy carts to help their Pugs get around, and the veterinarian might be able to prescribe medication to help alleviate symptoms. If your Pug squints or the eyes look red and tear excessively, contact your vet immediately. Corneal ulcers usually respond well to medication, but if left untreated, can cause blindness or even rupture the eye. Dry Eye : Keratoconjunctivitis sicca and pigmentary keratitis are two conditions seen in Pugs. They can occur at the same time, or individually. Your vet can perform tests to determine if this is the cause, which can be controlled with medication and special care. Pigmentary keratits is a condition that causes black spots on the cornea, especially in the corner near the nose. If the pigment covers the eye, it can cause blindness. Your vet can prescribe medication that will help keep the eyes moist and dissolve the pigment. Both of these eye conditions require life-long therapy and care. Eye Problems : Because their large eyes bulge, Pugs are prone to a variety of eye problems, including proptosis the eyeball is dislodged from the eye socket and the eyelid clamps behind it ; distichiasis an abnormal growth of eyelashes on the margin of the eye, resulting in the eyelashes rubbing against the eye ; progressive retinal atrophy a degenerative disease of the retinal visual cells that leads to blindness ; and entropion the eyelid, usually the lower lid, rolls inward, causing the hair on the lid to rub on the eye and irritate it. Allergies : Some Pugs suffer from a variety of allergies , ranging from contact to food allergies. If your Pug is licking at his paws or rubbing his face a great deal, suspect allergy and have him checked by your vet. Demodectic Mange : Also called demodicosis, all dogs carry a little passenger called a demodex mite. The mother dog passes this mite to her pups in their first few days of life. If your Pug has a weakened or compromised immune system, however, it can develop demodectic mange. Demodectic mange can be localized or generalized. In the localized form, patches of red, scaly, skin with hair loss appears on the head, neck and forelegs. Even so, you should take your dog to the vet because it can turn into the generalized form of demodectic mange. Generalized demodectic mange covers the entire body and affects older puppies and young adult dogs. The dog develops patchy skin, bald spots, and skin infections all over the body. The American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology recommends neutering or spaying all dogs that develop generalized demodectic mange because there is a genetic link. Staph Infection : Staph bacteria is commonly found on skin, but some dogs will develop pimples and infected hair follicles if their immune systems are stressed. The lesions can look like hives where there is hair; on areas without hair, the lesions can look like ringworm. You should contact your vet for appropriate treatment. Yeast Infection : If your Pug smells bad, is itchy and has blackened, thickened skin, he may have a yeast infection. It commonly affects the armpits, feet, groin, neck, and inside the ears. Your vet can prescribe medications to clear this up. Hemi-vertebrae : Short-nosed breeds, such as Pugs, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs, can have misshaped vertebrae. Sometimes, only a few of the vertebrae are affected and the dog is able to live a normal life. Others will stagger and display an uncoordinated, weak gait between 4 and 6 months of age. Some dogs get progressively worse and may even become paralyzed. The cause of the condition is unknown. Surgery can help. Hip Dysplasia : This malady affects small breeds as well as large breeds, including Pugs. Many factors, including genetics, environment and diet, are thought to contribute to this deformity of the hip joint. Affected Pugs are usually able to lead normal, healthy lives with proper veterinary attention. Legg-Perthes Disease : This is another disease involving the hip joint. Many toy breeds are prone to this condition. When your Pug has Legg-Perthes, the blood supply to the head of the femur the large rear leg bone is decreased, and the head of the femur that connects to the pelvis begins to disintegrate. Usually, the first signs of Legg-Perthes, limping and atrophy of the leg muscle, occur when puppies are 4 to 6 months old. The scar tissue that results from the surgery creates a false joint and the puppy is usually pain free. Patellar Luxation : The patella is the kneecap. Luxation means dislocation of an anatomical part as a bone at a joint. Patellar luxation is when the knee joint often of a hind leg slides in and out of place, causing pain. This can be crippling, but many dogs lead relatively normal lives with this condition. Vaccination Sensitivity : There are reports of Pugs suffering from sensitivity to routine vaccinations. Usually, symptoms include hives, facial swelling, soreness and lethargy. A dog that is sensitive to vaccines can develop complications or die, though this is rare. Watch your Pug carefully for a few hours after being vaccinated and call the vet if you notice anything unusual. Pug Care Though playful and rambunctious, the Pug is a low-maintenance companion, making it ideal for older owners. Because they are a small, quiet breed and are relatively inactive when indoors, they are a good choice for apartment dwellers as well. Light sleepers may also want to invest in a pair of ear plugs — Pugs are prone to snore. How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. These dogs love to eat, eat, eat. This, combined with their small stature, puts them at risk for obesity. As a Pug owner, you must show great restraint. Do not indulge him with food. Feed appropriate portions , limit treats and encourage exercise. For more on feeding your Pug, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Pugs are typically fawn-colored or black. The fawn color can have different tints, such as apricot or silver, and all Pugs have a short, flat, black muzzle. Pugs shed like crazy, especially in summer. The wise Pug owner accepts this, and adjusts her wardrobe accordingly, wearing light-colored clothing that better hides hair. Following that, regular brushing and bathing helps keep the coat in good condition and shedding to a minimum. A monthly bath is sufficient, though some owners bathe their Pugs more frequently. These folds are hotbeds for infection if allowed to become damp or dirty. The wrinkles must be dried thoroughly after bathing, and wiped out in-between baths. Some owners simply use a dry cotton ball; others use commercial baby wipes to wipe out the folds. Because they protrude, the eyes are vulnerable to injury and irritation from soaps and chemicals. Like many small breeds, the Pug can be susceptible to gum disease. Regular brushing with a small, soft toothbrush and doggie toothpaste helps prevent this. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Though small, the Pug is not delicate like some toy breeds, so he is a good breed choice for families with children. However, children who want an active pet to retrieve balls or play soccer will be disappointed with a Pug. Adults should always supervise interactions between children and pets. Properly trained and socialized , the Pug enjoys the companionship of dogs , and can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals. Pug Rescue Groups Pugs are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Pugs in need of adoption and or fostering. There are a number of rescues that we have not listed. Now, I have to decide which Pug puppy to bring home. I'm so nervous that I'll choose the wrong dog. How can I possibly know I am choosing a Pug puppy that is the best one for me? They're all going to be so cute! Answer: Hi Ashley. We agree that all of the puppies are going to be adorable and cute! However, there are definitely some guidelines that you can follow when you are trying to pick out the perfect Pug pup. We are not sure if it matters to you if you have a male or female. There are not that many differences, despite what others may say. While potential health problems may not be visible, there are 3 things that everyone should do: Check the eyes, breathing and gait. The Eyes: The eyes are not only the window to the soul, they can also give you a clue about the health of the dog. Watering, squinting or a glazed film on the eyes is a sign of health issues. Breathing: Hold the puppy close to your ear and listen carefully. Do you hear rattling and rasping? This is a sign of a breathing problem. Does the puppy have to breath through his or her mouth? If the puppy is at rest, they should be able to breath fine with their mouth closed this can be a stenotic nare issue, which often needs to be corrected with a surgical procedure. Watch the puppy walk: While young pups under the age of 6 weeks may still be gaining their footing, take note of any limping or odd gait issues. If you do notice an odd gait, listen for any clicking noises coming from the hip area. This sort of issue may be caused by underdeveloped hip bones joint and socket , a health problem not uncommon with the Pug breed. Interaction and Activity Some people will tell you that you should pick the puppy that comes right over to you first. This is not the best advice. Puppies that are very bold like that may be harder to train. Their enthusiasm may be great fun for a while, but keeping up with and trying to train such a puppy may turn out to be stressful. When you are choosing a Pug puppy, it is usually best to choose one who is quiet and calm. However, you most certainly need to make sure that the pug is not too quite due to an illness or extreme shyness. You don't want to bring home an ill pup and choosing a dog that is overly shy may make for a pet that is afraid of everything and will be in need of extensive of socialization training. It is recommended to have a close look at several puppies that stay in the background. If a Pug puppy is laying listless without any energy at all, this is a warning sign that the dog may be unhealthy. A calm Pug that does respond to you when picked up is what you should be looking for. Listen to the breathing for any signs of labored breathing or rasps. If the breathing is clear, take a look at the eyes. They should be bright and clear without an excessive discharge. With 2 or 3 puppies now left for you to decide on, take a look at how each one responds to you and how they respond to each other. Wiggle a toy in front of a puppy or whistle to him or her and see if the pup shows natural curiosity. The one for you should come over to you to investigate. Allow the whole litter to play with a toy. Take notice of the ones that seem to be bossy and the ones that seem to play fair. Take note of the ones who cower in the corner if the others fight for the toys. You will want to choose a Pug puppy who falls somewhere in the middle. This will ensure you have one that has a calm, yet curious personality. Finally, when you have it narrowed down to 2, do not feel rushed. Take time to sit down with each and talk to them. Does the pup look at you when you talk? Does he or she keep their tail high or wag the tail to express happiness? At this point, you should get a good feeling about which puppy is the one that is meant for you. Please remember, that just because you have an appointment to pick up a dog does not mean that you must go home with one. If the litter seems ill, all of the dogs seem aggressive or you do not feel a bond with any of the puppies it is absolutely acceptable to relay this to the breeder. While you may be very disappointed at first, in the long run you will be happy that you waited. When you are holding the Pug puppy that is right for you, you will know it. And what a lucky guy or girl that will be! Ready to begin his or her new journey as part of your family! All rights reserved. Chinese origins[ edit ] Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century. The pet pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. In Tibet , Buddhist monks kept pugs as pets in their monasteries. Pugs were painted by Goya in Spain, and in Italy they rode up front on private carriages, dressed in jackets and pantaloons that matched those of the coachman. They were used by the military to track animals and people, and were also employed as guard dogs. His self-portrait , which is now in London's Tate Gallery , includes his pug, Trump. Every carriage I meet here has a Pug in it. Many responded to the breed's image of anti-functionalism and diminutive size during this period. The modern pug's appearance probably changed after when a new wave of pugs were imported directly from China. These pugs had shorter legs and the modern-style pug nose. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord. Pug photo, ca .Note its small head and long legs. A pug by Carl Reichert. The pug that was predominantly featured in the commercials was Cheeka. A few other adverts also appeared in the following months, inspired by the idea of a dog following a boy. The round head is massive with a short, blunt, square-shaped muzzle. Moles on the cheeks are considered beauty spots. The teeth meet in a slight undershot bite. The very large, prominent eyes are dark. The small, thin ears are either rose or button shaped. The face has large, deep wrinkles. The high-set tail is curled over the back and a double curl is preferred in the show ring. Dewclaws are usually removed. The short coat is soft, fine and smooth. Coat colors come in apricot, fawn, black and silver. Temperament The Pug is keen, with a happy-go-lucky attitude. Animated, peppy and spirited, it is loyal, loving and affectionate with its family. Playful, lively and rambunctious, it is sure to keep you laughing. Highly intelligent, it bores easily without variety in its training. These dogs can be a bit willful if they sense they are stronger minded than the humans around them. Pugs are sensitive to the tone of your voice, so harsh punishment is unnecessary. They need an owner who is calm, yet firm, confident and consistent with the rules. This dog is neither excitable nor dull. They are good watchdogs, very devoted and are not yappers. Pugs get along well with other dogs and pets, and they behave impeccably with both children and visitors. Be sure to be your Pug's pack leader. Pugs that do not have strong human leaders can become jealous, and begin to display guarding behaviors, such as guarding furniture , food, toys, or other spots in the house. This behavior only happens when dogs are allowed to take over. These behaviors can be corrected when the owners start displaying the proper leadership. Height, Weight Height: Males 12 - 14 inches 30 - 36 cm Females 10 - 12 inches 25 - 30 cm Weight: Males 13 - 20 pounds 6 - 9 kg Females 13 - 18 pounds 6 - 8 kg Health Problems Pugs catch colds easily and are stressed by hot and cold weather. They are prone to allergies and the short muzzle contributes to chronic breathing problems, making the Pug tend to wheeze and snore. Pugs suffer from poor ventilation. Prone to skin problems. Prone to mast cell tumors. The cause is unknown. They are not the easiest whelpers. There is a chance of Keratitis inflammation of the cornea and ulcers on the cornea. Eyes are prone to weeping and cherry eye. Do not overfeed a Pug, as they will eat more than is good for them, quickly becoming obese and living much shorter lives. Living Conditions The Pug is good for apartment life. It is relatively inactive indoors and will do okay without a yard. Cannot withstand hot or cold weather and should be kept indoors at a comfortable temperature. Exercise Pugs are strong dogs with short, straight legs. They need to be taken on daily walks. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. They enjoy energetic games and will keep in better health if given regular exercise. But be careful not to overdo it, especially if you see them start to wheeze. Life Expectancy About 12 to 15 years. Litter Size About 2 -6 puppies Grooming The smooth, shorthaired coat is easy to groom. Brush and comb with a firm bristle brush and shampoo only when necessary. Dry thoroughly after a bath so the dog does not get chilled. The creases on the face must be cleaned regularly. This breed is an above average shedder. Origin The Pug is one of the oldest breeds known today, believed to have originated before BC. There is somewhat of a debate over the origin of the Pug. Most researchers agree that the Pug originated from Asia, descended from a shorthaired Pekingese. Another theory is that it is the result of crossing a small Bulldog , while others speculate that it is a miniature form of the French Mastiff Dogue de Bordeaux. The artist Hogarth had a Pug named "Trump" that he often depicted in his works. The breed became popular during Victorian times in the 19th century. Tibetan monasteries kept Pugs as pets. The breed made its way to Japan and Europe, where it not only became a pet of royalty but the official dog of the House of Orange in Holland. Prince William II owned Pugs. One dog in particular was said to have saved his life in at Hermingny, when the dog barked at approaching Spaniards alerting him of their presence. On their wedding night, when Napoleon refused to allow the dog to sleep in their bed, Josephine told him, "If the Pug does not sleep in our bed, neither do I! In when the British took over the Chinese Imperial Palace, they discovered several Pugs and Pekingese, and the dogs were brought back to England with them. The AKC recognized the Pug in .Some of the Pug's talents include: watchdog and performing tricks.
