We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. What he is, is overexcited and playful. He's jumping up on people to say hello, and he's mouthing you as a form of play. Puppies tussle and mock-bite each other, just as young boys who are friends wrestle and mock-punch each other. In both cases, the game looks aggressive but is not. He just doesn't realize he's hurting you because he's biting down too hard. When your pup jumps on you, turn your back on him; pay attention to him when he settles down When he mouths you too hard, yelp "OUCH" in a high-pitched voice and move away from him. He'll learn that being too rough shuts down the game so if he wants to keep playing he'll have to be gentler, and so he'll learn bite inhibition. How long is he being crated? If he's being crated for the entire workday, that's too long. Hire a dog walker to give him a midday break. Exercise the HELL out of him! Boxers are an exuberant, very playful, high energy breed. He needs a lot of real exercise, not merely a sedate walk on a leash, to burn off his youthful energy. Above all, remind yourself that this, too, will pass. Your pup's a rambunctious kid. Boxers can be a bit slow to mature mentally, but you'll definitely be seeing changes for the better in a few months though he may not settle down completely until after age two. I will second this. A pup needs a lot of exercise that pent-up energy has to go somewhere.A pup who is crated for many hours is guaranteed to build up energy that needs to get out in one way or another. When my pup was young, I crated him for the first year.He was crate-trained early, but the first and foremost thing I did with him was to make sure that he was completely and absolutely spent by the time he was ready to go into his crate, as well as plenty of exercise after I got home. Energy burned off, multiple bathroom breaks, and he was given a Kong with frozen food in it to keep him entertained as I left in the morning. I would then run home from work at lunchtime to let him out for another bathroom break and exercise, and the same thing as soon as I got home in the afternoon. If this isn't possible with your schedule, then it's a definite must that someone be hired to go to the home and let him out mid-day, at least while he's still young. Puppy bladders are small, and while some pups may hold it better than others I swear my little guy was a tank.I always had to tell him to go when we went outdoors but many simply cannot hold it for a long period of time, and it's torture for them to be expected to hold it in. Once your pup is old enough to be trusted on his own, a crate can be taken away from the equation. Keep exercise in line with his age; since he's 5 months old, too much exercise can be as bad as too little. Also start training him from the time he is little. You say that he bites you when you release him from his crate. What is the routine when you do let him out? Do you open the door and he charges out, heading for you? If so, he needs to be taught that he cannot leave the crate until you've given him the okay. Opening the door and telling him "wait" or whatever word you wish to use and physically blocking him if he does try to get out, will help. Generally, dogs catch on pretty quickly to this, and will learn to respect the command once they know what it means. Also, if you are arriving home and letting him out as soon as you get there, then change your routine. Him hearing you arrive will create excitement, and you don't want to go to him when he's in that state. Arrive home, ignore him completely for the first few minutes and go about your business. If he is crying as soon as he realizes you're there, ignore him. Don't give him any attention until he is completely quiet. Then approach the cage - no words spoken to acknowledge him - and as soon as he is quiet, open the door. If he attempts to come out, block him and say "NO". Wait until he is calm and listening to you, and once he is, then you can open the crate and let him exit. If he immediately gets hyper and starts jumping or biting, follow Aredhel's advice. My pup had absolutely no bite inhibition when I got him - separated from his mother at 2 weeks old, he never learned it - and he would bite very hard when he played, was excited, or was scared he used to lash out and bite my other dog's face extremely hard if I was walking them together and something scared him. I did the "OUCH! It worked, and quite quickly. If he is still attempting to bite you once you think he is calm and you let him out, I'd suggest you snap a leash on him as soon as you open the crate door. This gives you full control; if he does try to bite you which suggests he isn't calm, but hyper-excited then you can give him a quick, stern correction as soon as he does it. When red is bred with white, black or brown, black is dominate and pups are black. Two red parents, will make red or apricot. However, to carry the true red gene is very rare. Red can often fade with maturity. Many breeders boast about having red as it is highly sought after, but it can and may fade with time. I make a good effort at trying to produce red, but it is more rare. Brown and black also produce black. Two browns will make brown. Red can be so dark red that it is considered mahogany or rust. My Sangria, F1 mini-goldendoodle female is an example of this beautiful color. I do not claim to be an expert in the study, nor do I make any guarantees on future adult color. In breeds like the cocker spaniel, the red will be apricot as a pup, but can become dark red with maturity. Spots can also widen with maturity or appear to have moved around as they broadened out.
