Paper Training Paper training teaches a puppy to go to the bathroom on paper or puppy pads. This allows you to control where your puppy piddles. Begin by putting the puppy in a confined area of the house with tile flooring for easy clean up. Puppies like to eliminate on soft places, so putting paper down gives them this solution. Put paper or puppy pads on all hard surfaces. Your puppy will avoid eliminating on his bed and will use the paper, since it covers all other surfaces. Once he gets the idea, you can slowly begin eliminating the paper, starting with material closest to the bed. Leave a small piece of slightly soiled paper where you want your puppy to continue to eliminate. This utilizes the principle that puppies like to eliminate where they smell their previous offerings. The goal is for your puppy to learn to go only on the paper. If you want to eventually have your puppy eliminate outside, you can then slowly move the paper towards the door, and then put some paper outside. When your puppy goes to the paper inside, you can open the door and let them go on the paper outside. This training method requires a lot of intense observation and is best suited for only the most vigilant of owners. Pros of Constant-Supervision Training Your pup has a lot more freedom, and you are there for his every action. When you turn your back for a second — and you will — your puppy will sneak off and make a mistake in the house. This method can take longer than crate training. The RSPCA spays and castrates at this age, and apparently believes it is ethically and morally acceptable to do so. As do some breeders, rescue centres and a few vets. There is a breeder in Cardiff called Lisa Carson that neuters her Labradoodle pups, both standard and minis, at six to seven weeks of age. Please remember that name and never buy any animal from her. The day she can show me scientific proof this has a long-lasting benefit to these poor pups she and her vet have to my belief abused and caused future medical problems. Then I will apologise. She is not the only one. I want the names of breeders and vets that are doing this and I intend to name and shame every single one of them. I personally believe what the vets are doing is unethical. The KC and nearly every other rescue organisations have condemned it. She states it is a contractual obligation from the Australian Labradoodle Association. Simply do not be part of an organisation that suggests this horrific practice. There are only a few members in the UK. She is not the only breeder in this country to follow this disgraceful practice. I really hope she can sleep at night. However, I know of no other breed other than Australian Labradoodle where this is happening on a regular basis. She has stated it is to keep the bloodline pure? Unless I am sadly mistaken, Labradoodles are not pedigree dogs, they are what is euphemistically known as mongrels. The two main kennels involved in the breeding of the dogs in Australia have apparently been discredited. And I believe are no longer operating. Why is it only Australian Labradoodle breeders do this? If I was a cynic, I would say they did it to limit the number of Australian Labradoodle puppies on the market. Thereby keeping the vastly inflated prices artificially high. More profit for the breeders. How dare they? Is that why these dogs are so ludicrously priced? Some for breeding purposes have been sold for far higher amounts. Our first Lab, Ginger was a rescue but was obviously from a working line and very birdy. We don't know anything about her pedigree, but she was a great dog, and always easy to live with. She was about as good a dog as anyone could ask for. Tilly is probably a mix of both show and field lines since her mom looked more like an English dog, but she was a Master Hunter and her dad was Field Trial Champion. Tilly is just a pet for us, but she was a high energy dog when she was younger. She was very easy to train and has no phobias at all. Loves ever person or dog she meets and goes everywhere with us. She is not particularly cuddly but is happy to be close to us. Cooper is also a high energy dog, but very trainable. Her recall is better than Tilly's, and she also gets along with all the other people and dogs she has met. She does have some issues with being constrained for brushing and similar things, and has a very demanding attention bark, but all in all she is a great dog and easy to live with. Labs in general and working dogs in particular were bred to get along with other dogs in hunting situations and with people hunters they had never met before. I think they are a lot less likely to be reactive to other dogs or people than most other breeds. That is probably an over statement, but after all the only reason we have other breeds is so we can compare our Labs to them to see how good they really are.
