Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Birdsboro, PA, .Services: Puppies,Adult Dogs,Rescue. We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. UKC Classification: Companion Dog Prevalence: Common The English bulldog is a brawny little powerhouse whose characteristic crablike waddle exudes great strength, stability and vigor. The dog's head is large and spherical, and the muzzle is extremely short, giving the face a flattened appearance. The English bulldog's eyes are dark and set low and wide on the forehead in the frontal plane. The nose is black and slightly upturned. The jaws or "chops" are massive, broad and undershot. The lower jaw juts out in front of the upper jaw to scarcely expose the lower incisors, producing a comical grin. The lips are fleshy and pendulous. The cheeks are well rounded and protrude sideways. The ears are thin, small and angle forward like flaps that frame the forehead. The English bulldog's neck is short and thick; the shoulders are massive, muscular and broad. The chest is deep and full, and the back is barreled and slightly arched. His rounded hips protrude slightly above the level of the back. The stubby tail is thick and either straight or screwed. His short, stocky legs have great muscle definition. They are splayed out and slightly bowed at the elbows and hocks to form a sturdy, base-wide stance. The English bulldog stands about 16 inches tall. The female weighs about 50 pounds 23 kilograms , and the male weighs about 54 pounds 24 kilograms. The English bulldog's skin is loose and pendant with heavy wrinkles and thick folds on the face and a dewlap hanging from the throat. The coat is short and fine textured. The various color patterns are brindle, piebald, and solid white, red, fawn or fallow. Personality: The English bulldog has a sweet, gentle disposition. Dependable and predictable, the bulldog is a wonderful family pet and loving to most children. People-oriented as a breed, they actively solicit human attention. However, they have retained the courage that was originally bred into them for bull baiting, so they make fine watchdogs. Although they generally get along well with other family pets, English bulldogs can be aggressive to unfamiliar dogs. Living With: English bulldogs make fine apartment pets and do not require a yard. Typically low-endurance dogs, they need only a moderate amount of exercise. They thrive best in temperate climates; they readily overheat and have breathing difficulties in hot weather, and they chill easily in cold temperatures. Generally loud breathers, English bulldogs tend to snore and wheeze. Many drool as well. They are moderate shedders and their short coats require little grooming. However, the wrinkles on the face should be wiped regularly to prevent skin infections. History: Named for its use in the sport of bull baiting, the English bulldog seems to have originated in the British Isles sometime prior to the 13th century. One of the few references to the sport dates back to , and talks about a butcher's dogs that chased a bull through the English town of Stamford. This pursuit so pleased the earl of the town that he inaugurated bull baiting as a sport in his domain. Today, the English bulldog makes a fine family pet. The AKC recognizes the breed simply as the bulldog. Related Pet Care Articles. Dog domestic dog The Bulldog is a British breed of dog of mastiff type. It may also be known as the English Bulldog or British Bulldog. It is a medium-sized, muscular dog of around 40—55 lb 18—25 kg. They have large heads with thick folds of skin around the face and shoulders, and a relatively flat face with a protruding lower jaw. The breed has significant health issues as a consequence of breeding for its distinctive appearance, including brachycephalia , hip dysplasia , heat sensitivity, and skin infections. Due to concerns about their quality of life, breeding Bulldogs is illegal in Norway and the Netherlands. The modern Bulldog was bred as a companion dog from the Old English Bulldog , a now-extinct breed used for bull-baiting , when the sport was outlawed in England under the Cruelty to Animals Act. While often used as a symbol of ferocity and courage, modern Bulldogs are generally friendly, amiable dogs. Bulldogs are now commonly kept as pets; in it was in twelfth place on a list of the breeds most frequently registered worldwide. The first reference to the word "Bulldog" is dated or in a letter by a man named Preswick Eaton where he writes: "procuer mee two good Bulldogs, and let them be sent by ye first shipp". This entailed the setting of dogs after placing wagers on each dog onto a tethered bull. The dog that grabbed the bull by the nose and pinned it to the ground would be the victor. It was common for a bull to maim or kill several dogs at such an event, either by goring, tossing, or trampling over them. Over the centuries, dogs used for bull-baiting developed the stocky bodies and massive heads and jaws that typify the breed, as well as a ferocious and savage temperament. Bull-baiting was made illegal in England by the Cruelty to Animals Act .However, emigrants did have a use for such dogs in the New World. In midth century New York, Bulldogs were used as a part of a citywide roundup effort led by Governor Richard Nicolls. Because cornering and leading wild bulls was dangerous, Bulldogs were trained to seize a bull by its nose long enough for a rope to be secured around its neck. Rockstro founded the first Bulldog Club. Three years after its opening the Club ceased to exist, not having organized a single show. Samuel Wickens, treasurer of the club, published this description in under the pseudonym Philo-Kuan. The first English Bulldog entered into the register was a male dog named Adam Adamo , born in .The founders of the club collected all available information about the breed and its best representatives and developed a new standard for the English Bulldog, which was published on 27 May , the same year they held the first breed show. Since , exhibitions of the club were held annually, except during the Second World War. On 17 May , the Bulldog Club was granted the status of a corporation and since then has carried the official name "The Bulldog Club, Inc. It is the oldest mono-breed dog kennel club in the world. King Orry was reminiscent of the original Bulldogs, lighter boned and very athletic. Dock Leaf was smaller and heavier set, more like modern Bulldogs. King Orry was declared the winner that year, finishing the mile 32 km walk while Dock Leaf collapsed and expired. Although not as physically capable as their ancestors, modern Bulldogs are much calmer and less aggressive. Note the "rope" over the nose, and pronounced underbite Bulldogs have characteristically wide heads and shoulders along with a pronounced mandibular prognathism. There are generally thick folds of skin on the brow; round, black, wide-set eyes; a short muzzle with characteristic folds called a rope or nose roll above the nose; hanging skin under the neck; drooping lips and pointed teeth, and an underbite with an upturned jaw. The coat is short, flat, and sleek with colours of red, fawn, white, brindle , and piebald. In the United Kingdom, the breed standards are 55 lb 25 kg for a male and 50 lb 23 kg for a female. These attributes should be countenanced by the expression and behavior". Bulldogs are recognized as excellent family pets because of their tendency to form strong bonds with children. At five to six years old, they start to show signs of aging. Those that died of old age had an average lifespan of 10 to 11 years. Left to right, the skulls are from approximately the s, s, and s. A study by the Royal Veterinary College found that Bulldogs are a much less healthy breed than average, with over twice the odds of being diagnosed with at least one of the common dog disorders investigated in the study. A degree of BOAS has been normalized in the breed, as an inevitable consequence of their distinctive face. Since dogs regulate heat primarily by panting, Bulldogs are very sensitive to heat; they may actually gain rather than lose heat due to their inefficient breathing, leading to a vicious cycle. Bulldogs must be given plenty of shade and water, and must be kept out of standing heat. If not properly exercised it is possible for a Bulldog to become overweight, which could lead to heart and lung problems, as well as stress on the joints. These cause the dog some discomfort, but are treatable either by vet or an experienced owner. Other problems can include cherry eye , a protrusion of the inner eyelid which can be corrected by a veterinarian , allergies , and hip issues in older Bulldogs. Due to the high volume of skin folds on the Bulldog's body, they have high prevalence of skin-fold dermatitis. Opposed by the British Bulldog Breed Council, it was speculated by the press that the changes would lead to a smaller head, fewer skin folds, a longer muzzle, and a taller thinner posture, in order to combat problems with respiration and breeding due to head size and width of shoulders. Among these is a fitness test where the dog has to walk 1 km 0. Its temperature and heart rate has to recover after 15 minutes. They are often used as mascots by universities, sports team, and other organizations. South African Boerboel Puppies Puppies are vet checked, dewormed with first vaccines and docked tails. Though humans can also contract forms of hepatitis, this form can not be transmitted to humans. It can be transmitted to humans. DHPP is used to prevent it. Generally speaking, puppies should get their first rabies shot around 16 weeks of age and again between years old. Rabies Vaccine Schedule for Puppies 1st shot: weeks Booster: every 3 years Non-core Vaccines Non-core vaccines are important, but they are considered optional for dogs with less risk of infection. Non-core vaccines are recommended based on lifestyle and where you live or travel. Bordetella Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacterium associated with respiratory disease in dogs and is known to cause the most severe form of kennel cough. Symptoms of an upper respiratory infection include nasal discharge, sneezing, coughing, congestion, etc. Some veterinarians may recommend Bordetella as a core vaccine for puppies based on their living environment, especially for social dogs who spend time in areas where they might come into contact with the bacteria like the dog park, boarding facilities, or doggy daycare. The vaccination can be given orally, intranasally, or by injection. Bordetella Vaccine Schedule for Puppies 1st shot: weeks Booster: every year Leptospira Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by infection of the genus Leptospira, which are found in water and soil. The zoonotic disease spreads easily from animals to humans and is more common in warm climate areas with high annual rainfall; the Leptospira vaccine may be considered core in these areas. Signs of leptospirosis may include shivering, fever, muscle tenderness, increased thirst, dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, jaundice, kidney failure, liver failure, etc. Leptospira Vaccine Schedule for Puppies 1st shot: weeks 3rd shot: 1 year Booster: every year There is also a 5-way vaccine known as DHLPP, which is a combination vaccine of distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, and parvo. Lyme disease Lyme disease is caused by infection with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi which is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. The most common symptoms in dogs include loss of appetite, lameness, joint swelling, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. More serious cases can also develop kidney complications. Lyme Vaccination Schedule for Puppies 1st shot: weeks 2nd shot: weeks later Booster: every year Canine Influenza Canine influenza, or dog flu, is a contagious viral infection affecting dogs. The virus is spread through aerosols or droplets containing respiratory secretions from barking, sneezing, and coughing. Dogs in close contact with infected dogs in places like daycare facilities, groomers, and kennels are at a higher risk of contracting the disease. CIV causes an acute respiratory infection in dogs, with the most common clinical sign being a cough that persists for up to 21 days. Vaccines are available for both H3N2 and H3N8 canine influenza. A bivalent vaccine offering protection against both strains is available as well. Dogs become infected when they swallow the parasite that may be present in water or other substances that have been soiled with feces leading to the disease Giardiasis. Giardia in dogs usually causes diarrhea, weight loss, or even death. Giardia is an available vaccine for puppies 8 weeks of age and older for 6 months of immunity against giardiasis. Most common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Young dogs are at a high risk of contracting the disease, so the vaccine is highly recommended for puppies under eight weeks. Rattlesnake vaccine A rattlesnake vaccine can help dogs build antibodies to rattlesnake venom from bites that are often deadly and severely painful to dogs. The antibodies work to neutralize the venom, thereby significantly extending the window of time you have to take your dog to the emergency room , increasing their odds of survival. Protect yourself from heartbreak without breaking the bank. Compare quotes to find the best deal for your budget. After that, puppies should receive a series of vaccines every two to four weeks until actual protein can be achieved between the ages of 6 and 20 weeks old. Your vet will determine a safe vaccine schedule for your puppy based on their weight, health, age, etc. Some pet parents prefer getting multiple puppy shots in one vet visit to minimize stress on their pet, whereas others prefer to spread the shots out to reduce possible side effects and soreness — talk to your vet to create a safe vaccine schedule that works for you and your puppy. Rabies depends on local laws but is usually given by the time your dog reaches 3 to 6 months old. When should puppies have all their shots by? Most vets prefer giving the final DHPP shot at 16 weeks or later; however, new recommendations suggest up to 20 weeks out. When do puppies need booster shots? Abstaining from booster shots can put your puppy at risk. However, not all vaccines require yearly boosters. DHPP vaccine booster: every two weeks for a total of three sets, then every three years Lepto, Canine influenza, and Lyme disease vaccine booster: one month after the initial series, then annually Bordetella booster: 1 year or every 6 months where there is a concern Rabies booster: every 1 to 3 years after the initial round, depending on state laws Puppy Vaccine Schedule There are several types of puppy shots your pet might get in their first year. In addition to a deworming schedule, your vet will suggest a vaccination schedule for puppies based on their age, environment, and medical history. Most vets recommend this general timeline for first-year puppy shots: weeks of age Between 6- and 8-weeks-old, puppies get their first shot of the DHPP distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus vaccine. They might also receive their first round of vaccinations for Bordetella and Lyme disease. Leptospira Lepto is a common puppy vaccination administered around this time frame. They'll also get their first rabies vaccine depending on state-mandated vaccine schedules for puppies, as well as a second shot of the Lepto vaccine if applicable. Boosters Every Years Puppies will need a booster shot for all vaccines at age 1. Dogs need booster vaccinations for Bordetella, Lepto, Lyme, and Giardia annually receiving their first immunization as an adult. The vaccination schedule for DHPP and rabies is every 3 years, but check your local laws and defer to your veterinarian's advice to ensure your pet stays free of disease. How much are puppy shots? Non-essential vaccines your vet may recommend will also increase the price. Note that puppy shots cost more or less depending on several different factors, including your location. For instance, vets in crowded urban areas tend to charge more than vets in smaller towns and rural areas. Also keep in mind that you'll need to budget for booster shots in one- or three-year intervals to ensure your pet stays protected from disease. Fortunately, vaccines for dogs are less expensive than first-year puppy shots because boosters are administered in one dose every few years, as opposed to multiple doses every few weeks. All puppies need to get the core vaccines, i. Your veterinarian will consider the risk factors and advise you on which vaccines are best for your puppy during the first vet visit. No, but both vaccines for puppies are often combined in one shot. Distemper and parvovirus are two different illnesses that are potentially fatal if not treated quickly. What is the 5-in-1 shot for puppies? Do puppies need 3 or 4 sets of shots? It depends on their age; vets may recommend a shorter puppy vaccination schedule for dogs over 16 weeks old and not yet fully vaccinated. How many shots do puppies need before going outside? A titer test is a blood test showing whether your puppy has antibodies for a particular illness. The test can be used to determine the effectiveness of a vaccine and help determine if or which booster vaccines your dog needs. Most doggy daycares and boarding facilities do not accept a titer test in lieu of a puppy vaccination record. When should puppies get dewormed? Because worms are very common in puppies, veterinarians recommend deworming them for the first time when they're two to three weeks old. Is there a heartworm vaccine for puppies? Preventatives can either be administered as monthly medication or every six months by injection. How can you save money on puppy shots? Not to mention, some vaccinations are required by law. Why Do Puppies Need Vaccinations? Puppies need vaccinations to help prevent the catching of various dangerous diseases. If your dog ever comes in contact with a disease they have been vaccinated against, his immune system will know how to destroy it. There are vaccines available to protect your puppy against more than 11 different diseases. However, depending on your circumstances and where you live, your puppy might not need them all. Your vet will be able to recommend those they think your really needs, with others being up to your choice. There are four core vaccines for diseases all puppies should be vaccinated against and seven non-core vaccines that the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Veterinary Medicine Association recommend. The non-core vaccines may or may not be recommended by your vet, depending on different variables, mostly the prevalence or absence of a disease in your area. The Core Vaccinations Rabies. This is a potentially fatal and highly contagious disease. Depending on which state or country you live in, your dog will need to have a booster once every one to three years. This common virus is hard to treat and has an 80 percent fatality rate, which is why inoculating against it is so important. Canine viral hepatitis is also known as adenovirus. Canine distemper. Before vaccination, this was a big killer of dogs. Vaccinating against this disease will protect your puppy if he comes in contact with the virus while out and about. The Non-Core Vaccinations Lyme disease. The vast majority of cases have occurred in the eastern American coastal states between Massachusetts and Virginia. Parainfluenza and Bordetella. The parainfluenza virus and the bordetella bacterium are both major causes of kennel cough. Inoculation is generally only necessary if your puppy is going to be exposed to many other dogs. For instance, at boarding kennels, doggy daycare or dog shows. This infectious disease is a common cause of stomach upset. This bacteria can infect dogs and their human companions. In serious cases it can cause organ failure and death in dogs. In certain high-risk parts of the country, your dog might need a booster every six months. Giardia are parasites that commonly live in the digestive tracts of dogs. Many dogs have them, but they rarely cause problems. How Are Vaccines Given? Most vaccines are given as injections. These are given either under the skin or into the muscle. Most combination injections protect against distemper, leptospirosis, hepatitis, parainfluenza, coronavirus and parvovirus. This allows their body time to develop a good immune response. Recommended and Most Common Schedule of Vaccinations: 6 to 7 weeks old: This is when your puppy should get his first combination injection. He needs his second combination vaccine. Make sure you have a record of his first injection to show your new vet. If necessary, he will also have a Lyme disease vaccine. At this point, your vet will advise you when your puppy can go out for his first walk. Are There Any Risks Involved? Unfortunately, there are potential risks to having your puppy vaccinated. That said, the risks are far outweighed by the benefits. However, you should monitor your dog closely after a vaccination and contact your vet right away if you notice any of the following symptoms: Hives. What Vaccines Do Puppies Need? Core Versus Non-Core Vaccines CORE vaccines: Some infectious diseases of dogs are so common, debilitating, easily spread, or can be spread to people zoonotic that vaccination against them is deemed of critical importance. The first three are often administered as the combination DA2P shot. NON-CORE vaccines: On the other hand, there are diseases and conditions for which there are vaccines, but either because of their limited geographic distribution meaning they don't affect all parts of the country equally , lesser severity, specific lifestyle risk factors, or other reasons, they are not automatically recommended for every dog. The Benefits of Vaccines The benefits of vaccines far outweigh any risks. Vaccines are very effective and safe. Their use has notably decreased the morbidity and mortality associated with many infectious diseases. Per a study, there were only .Adverse events were more typical among smaller dogs and those receiving multiple vaccinations at one visit. Vaccine Safety Before I jump into which vaccines your puppy may need, it's critical to know that where they get their vaccines is equally as important. This is because individuals and organizations that aren't regulated, like veterinarians are, buy vaccines from places that may not know how to handle them properly. They may allow the vaccines to get warm, and this inactivates them. Or people transport them and don't keep them temperature-controlled or leave them in a vehicle for too long. In both these cases, the vaccines are essentially useless. Where you get your vaccines matters, and your veterinarian is trained and regulated to administer them properly. Puppy Vaccines By Age 6—8 weeks of age In some cases, your puppy will already have received some of these vaccines before you pick them up. Check with the people or organization you're getting your puppy from to confirm which vaccines your pup received and when. See the safety note above. This information is important for your vet to have to know best how to structure your pup's initial vaccination series, as all these puppy vaccines need to be given in a series of initial shots followed by booster shots. This vaccine may be administered as a DA2PP, which is the same thing but also includes protection against Parainfluenza an important but non-core vaccine to help protect against a highly contagious respiratory virus. If your puppy is only receiving its first vaccine or is a toy breed, your veterinarian may administer the Bordetella at the next appointment. The Bordetella vaccine comes in three different types, intra-nasal, oral, or injectable. Depending on which type of vaccine your veterinarian uses will determine if it needs to be boosted in 2 to 4 weeks. This vaccine is often recommended for dogs who will go to dog daycare, puppy classes, dog parks, dog shows, be boarded, etc. Dog Flu There are two different canine flu vaccines available, each protecting against a different strain of dog flu. If this is the first dose of this vaccine your pup is receiving, they will need another vaccination in 2—4 weeks, depending on which vaccine they are given, for the best protection. Again, this non-core vaccine is suitable for dogs who will go to puppy classes, grooming, dog parks, dog shows, travel, be boarded, etc. However, the facility needs to be clean, and all pups in attendance need to have also received their first veterinary-administered vaccines and deworming. Check with your vet and your puppy training facility of choice on timing, and see this position statement on puppy socialization timing from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. Meet some not all other dogs: A puppy can usually also start to meet other KNOWN and healthy puppies and adult dogs at this point in locations that are safe and clean. Avoid: Sidewalks, parks, pet stores, doggie daycare, groomers, and other areas or settings frequented by other unknown dogs. Socialization of puppies is critically important for their emotional and behavioral development, and it isn't just about them being "social" with other dogs or even people. There are many "non-social" things that young puppies need to be properly exposed to early on. Check out our Pupstanding App with its fun, easy-to-use checklist to help socialize your pup. Either way, it's an important visit. This vaccine may be administered as a DA2PP, which is the same thing, but also includes protection against Parainfluenza an important but non-core vaccine. Kennel Cough The initial vaccine can be given at this age if necessary or desired, depending on the type of vaccine used intra-nasal, oral, or injectable. Depending on which type of vaccine your veterinarian uses will determine if it needs to be boostered in 2 to 4 weeks. If this is the first dose of this vaccine your pup is receiving, they will need another vaccination in 2—4 weeks, depending on which vaccine they are receiving, for the best protection. Avoid: Sidewalks, parks, pet stores, daycare, and other areas or settings used by other unknown dogs should be avoided. Shopping malls and home improvement stores can be great places to socialize your puppy without excessive risk of contagious dog diseases. However, keeping your pet in a stroller or backpack lessens your pup's chances of being exposed to diseases. Your goal is to remove any trace of fecal matter before your pup licks their paws or contaminates your care or home. Their booster shots at this visit are important to build their immunity and help protect them from these diseases. This vaccine may be administered as a DA2PP, which is the same thing but also includes protection against Parainfluenza an important non-core vaccine. State and local regulations determine the age at which all dogs must be vaccinated for rabies. See below for more detail on what this vaccine covers against and why you or your vet might want to consider it. Note: Because Lepto can be devastating to both your dog and you it is zoonotic , and also because all dogs can be at risk including even indoor-only dogs and those that never leave their backyard , your veterinarian may highly recommend and consider this vaccine "core," and may recommend starting the initial series in the 9—12 week age range rather than 12— 16 weeks old. See below for more detail on what the Lepto vaccine covers against and why you or your vet might want to consider it. Where your puppy can usually go and what they can usually do after this 12—16 week vaccine visit: Play with unknown dogs: Following this visit, a puppy can usually begin to expand their circle of friends to include unknown dogs i. Still avoid: Daycare centers, fields, and parks including dedicated dog parks should still be avoided. Where your puppy can usually go and what they can usually do after this 15—17 week vaccine visit: Freedom! One week after this final puppy vaccine visit, most pups have enough vaccine protection against the common vaccinable conditions to be able to get a full groom and go to the dog park, doggie daycare, pet stores, and other places where large groups of unknown dogs frequent and congregate. Of course, it's still a good idea to keep an eye out and avoid any obviously sick dogs. Booster vaccinations will be needed throughout their life. The frequency and types of vaccine boosters your dog will need throughout their life are influenced by their lifestyle, where you live and travel to with them, how common certain diseases are in your area and at different times of the year, and a host of other factors. For some dogs and some conditions, titers blood tests measuring the level of antibodies in your dog's system may help to determine vaccination intervals and may be preferable. This is a discussion to have with your vet. Titer Testing for Dogs A titer is a test that is done using a sample of your dog's blood to measure the level of antibodies to a specific disease. Antibodies are proteins made by the body as a response to antigens. Antigens are foreign substances or stimuli to the body, such as viruses, bacteria, or vaccinations, that cause the body to mount an immune response. Vaccine titers are used as a screening tool to determine whether or not to revaccinate for a particular disease. If a vaccine titer comes back high, this indicates that your dog, if exposed to that disease, should be able to fight it off. The problem with titers Vaccines are given either yearly or every 3 years. With titers, there is no way to predict what the levels will be in three to six months, even if they tested high at the time of the titer testing. Many factors can affect the immune system and its level of resistance. Factors such as disease, stress, or medications can impact it, and therefore there is no consistency over time regarding what the antibody levels could be. This could put your dog at risk until you go in for another titer test. Rabies is a vaccine required by law in all states. There are only certain states that allow titers for medical exceptions. Every puppy is different. Similarly, some puppies are born with deficiencies in their immune system, or their immune system may develop more slowly because of dietary or other factors. Maternal immunity is protective but can interfere with a puppy's vaccinations. Over the first few weeks of life, maternal immunity begins to decline, and by about 12 weeks it is generally gone. However, some puppies are provided protection by maternal immunity as old as 20 weeks. The vaccines are given as a series to give the maternal immunity time to wane while their own immune system is fully developing in response to and in conjunction with their shots. Missing a Vaccine or Booster Shot Dog owners should be aware that missing or delaying a vaccine in a series for more than 4 weeks puts a puppy at risk of disease. During the initial series of a vaccine, if you delay a booster more than six weeks or miss one, an additional booster vaccine will be needed 3 weeks after resuming the series. For example, if you miss the third vaccine in the DA2P series, a vaccine will be given and then boosted again in 3 weeks. Note: You may need to restart a series two vaccine doses 3 to 4 weeks apart for yearly vaccines that are not boosted within 1 year and 6 weeks from the last vaccine given. Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in Dogs The core vs. Your veterinarian is your best resource for helping to determine which vaccines your new pup would benefit from and when. They are the only ones who have the medical training and understanding, as well as the first-hand knowledge of your dog and your environment necessary to best guide you. Note that some of the vaccinable conditions listed below can be zoonotic, meaning that they can also infect and cause disease in people. The bacteria is transmitted through the air or direct contact, especially when an infected dog coughs or sneezes. It can also be spread by contaminated clothing, bowls, beds, and other communal surfaces such as cages or kennels. It seems like every time you turn around, there's another shot your pup needs. And keeping track of all the different types of vaccinations can be a real challenge. But don't worry, we're here to help. In this article, we provide a comprehensive A-to-Z guide for dog vaccination in India - covering everything you need to know about what shots are available, when they should be administered, and more! Why vaccinate your dog? There are a number of important reasons to vaccinate your dog. Vaccinations help protect your dog from a variety of serious and potentially deadly diseases. They also help reduce the spread of disease among dogs and from dogs to humans. Vaccinating your dog is one of the best things you can do to keep them healthy and happy and is an important part of responsible pet parenting. So here's a quick rundown of the most common vaccinations dogs need. All dogs should be vaccinated against rabies, and booster shots should be given every one to three years depending on state law. Parvovirus: Parvovirus is a deadly disease that can affect dogs of all ages, but puppies are especially vulnerable. The virus attacks the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Parvovirus can also cause heart problems and death. All dogs should be vaccinated against parvovirus, with booster shots given every one to two years. Distemper: Distemper is a highly contagious disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs. It can cause severe coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, and death. Puppies are especially vulnerable to the disease. All dogs should be vaccinated against distemper, with booster shots given every one to two years. Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects the kidneys and liver of dogs. It can be transmitted through contact with contaminated water or soil. The disease can cause severe kidney damage and death. All dogs should be vaccinated against leptospirosis, with booster shots given every one to two years. Infectious Canine Hepatitis: Hepatitis is a viral disease that affects the liver of dogs. The symptoms can range from loss of appetite and thirst, fever and bleeding. It is usually spread through contact with contaminated or infected urine, saliva or faeces. Non-core Vaccines for Dogs: There are a few vaccines that are considered "non-core" for dogs, which means that they are not necessarily required for all dogs. However, your veterinarian may recommend them based on your dog's lifestyle and risk factors. Bordetella kennel cough is a bacteria that can cause respiratory infections in dogs. It is often spread through close contact with other dogs, so if your dog socialises with other dogs regularly, your veterinarian may recommend this vaccine. Canine ParaInfluenza is a virus that can cause respiratory illness in dogs. It is most commonly spread through close contact with other infected dogs. You might want to get this vaccine once you discuss it with your veterinarian. Lyme Vaccine is used to help prevent Lyme Disease, which is caused by a bacteria transmitted by ticks. If your dog spends time in areas where ticks are common such as woods or tall grass , your veterinarian may recommend this vaccine. Coronavirus: The canine coronavirus CCoV is a virus that can cause intestinal infections and abdominal discomfort in dogs. It is most commonly spread through close contact with other infected dogs, therefore, if your dog socialises with other dogs regularly, you can consider administering this vaccine once you discuss it with your veterinarian. They will need a booster shot every weeks of core vaccines until they are 16 weeks old. After that, they will need an annual booster shot.
Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. They love to stay around people and are caring towards their family members, making a great companion and watch dog. Having a loyal and affectionate nature, Westiepoos are good with other pets as well as kids, espeically older kids as they are more considerate. However, they are shy with strangers and would at times bark at them and even at strange noises , but are not the aggressive kind that would end up biting. This agile dog is curious and would often try to investigate their surroundings, even getting into things they usually should not. They are intelligent, also able to understand the boredom of separation, which they would display by yapping noisily when left alone. Care Exercise Westiepoos need daily walks and outdoor playtime to stay happy. Being an excellent jogging companion, you might want to take them out for a leashed jogging session in the morning. Their robust indoor activities all day also play a big part in meeting with their daily exercise needs. They love some off-leash playtime as well, but make sure to keep them within an enclosed yard. Grooming Although covered entirely with curly hair from head to toes, this dog needs minimal grooming and care. Give them a thorough brushing at least twice a week, with a stiff-bristle or pin brush for keeping the dead hairs away. Note that their coat is characteristically disheveled, even after they are freshly bathed or brushed. However, clipping their coat would reduce the frequent need for grooming. A wet bath is recommended only when they are untidy, making sure to use a mild shampoo. Dry shampooing also works between full wet baths. Health Problems Because of their diverse genetic makeup, hybrid dogs are less prone to doggie diseases, and so are the Westiepoos. But like any other breed, some individuals might be susceptible to certain inherited conditions. Common health issues associated with them are chronic skin problems, epilepsy, liver diseases, and PRA progressive retinal atrophy. Training Your wee poo puppy has an inborn instinct to make you happy, making it a fast learner. Begin socialization, obedience and pack-leader training at a very young age. Get it acquainted with grooming and leash as well as introduce it to the other pets and people in your family. Some Westiepoo owners have reported that it is difficult to housebreak them, while others suggest they will pick up housebreaking effortlessly if they are allowed to go outdoors, if required. The crate training method works best for this breed. Never be a harsh trainer. Teach them consistently, with firmness and patience, or else, it might backfire. According to some dog-owners, following a raw diet helps in reducing the chances of skin allergies. Interesting Facts Weepoos tend to develop syndromes of barking if left alone for long periods of time. Lifespan Sociability Sweet little balls of scruffy fluff, Westiepoo puppies are ridiculously cute. They come in a range of solid colors, though most tend toward white, and their fur is soft and wavy. Long fur may hide their eyes, but underneath is a bright and inquisitive mind. Though they do not grow into large dogs, Westiepoos have high energy and stamina. They are adaptable to most living situations — whether city, suburban, or rural — but still need plenty of exercise and require access to a fenced-in yard at a minimum. The charming and spunky Westiepoo are of moderate lifespan and regularly live over a decade. So, be prepared to care for them in good times and bad for quite a while. Though there is not much data on the relatively new Westiepoo breed, you can get tons of information and advice on the well-loved parent breeds. The story goes that one day Colonel Malcom of Poltalloch was hunting with a pack of Cairn Terriers and accidentally shot his favorite dog. Upset by the tragic mistake, he vowed to only hunt with white dogs from then on. Like ours, if left untrimmed, their hair will just keep growing! If not cared for, their coat can cord and turn into a sort of dreadlock. This strange hair-like-fur is also hypoallergenic. The two most popular contenders for the official name of the Westiepoo are Westiedoodle and Wee-Poo. Although it can be very independent, and even aloof at times, it is incredibly loyal and affectionate with its family. It is also a smart, and often a very curious dog that loves to explore. Regularly giving your Westiepoo plenty of outdoor space is recommended, as this self-reliant dog will love to roam around by themselves and dig. Due to their West Highland White Terrier heritage, some Westiepoos tend to dig and chase smaller animals. The Standard Poodle parent does not have much hunting instinct to speak of, however, so it is a bit of a toss-up as to which breed your dog will favor. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They require quite a bit of exercise, so we think the more people that are excited to take them outdoors the better! While they often favor the gentle attitude of the Standard Poodle, not all Westiepoos have a personality that meshes well with children. Their terrier heritage can tend towards nippiness and a certain degree of unpredictability, so they may not be suitable playmates for all children. The best way to make sure your Westiepoo gets along with your kids is to socialize both dogs and children with each other at an early age. Teach both parties how to interact appropriately and respect boundaries, and you should not have any trouble. Standard Poodles are friendly and have very little hunting instincts, making them easygoing with dogs and cats alike. The West Highland White Terrier, however, is bred to hunt. They get along generally with other dogs but may chase cats and are not to be trusted with any small animal. As always, early socialization will go a long way toward helping pets get along. Get to know your animals, because with some patience and supervision a harmonious home life is absolutely within your grasp! Things to Know When Owning a Westiepoo Adding a new canine companion to your life is a serious decision. But keep an eye on those ingredient lists, because not all kibble is created equal. Stay away from brands that have large quantities of fillers like grain and byproduct ingredients. A high-quality kibble should give your dog a wide variety of nutrients from both plant and animal sources. Try giving adding some lean proteins like fish, veggies, or fruits with their standard kibble. A post shared by Westie Match westie. Though they can adapt to city or more rural settings, a fenced-in yard is very necessary. And the more yard space your Westiepoo has to explore, the better! Their terrier heritage means that they will love adventuring solo to root around and dig. Additionally, their Standard Poodle parent gives this breed a love of running and retrieving. Early training will start you off on the right foot with your puppy and will be a fun way for both dogs and humans to learn to communicate with each other. Their terrier breeding means that it is especially important to teach your Westiepoo good behavior. Without guidance, terrier breeds can become yappy, chase squirrels and other small animals, and dig in inappropriate places. They respond well to firm, positive training. It may have either a single or double coat, and the hair-like-fur grows at a rapid rate. Daily brushing will help prevent mats , and we recommend giving your Westiepoo a haircut every six to eight weeks. Ears need to be checked and cleaned regularly and may need special attention if the hair around the ear is kept long. Remove any wax or dirt buildup, but also check for burrs, ticks, and other parasites that may have grabbed on. While any of these could appear in a Westiepoo, as a hybrid dog breed they are usually significantly healthier than either of their parent breeds. Bearing that in mind, here is a rundown of all the health conditions you may encounter with your Westiepoo. Minor Conditions. Westiepoos are a designer hybrid dog breed beloved not only for their adorable looks, but also for their winning combination of charm, intelligence, and loving nature. Westiepoos tend to get along with children, families, seniors, and other dogs, making these small pooches the perfect companion for just about any household. The small-but-mighty breed loves social interaction and is generally eager to play with their owners or other pooches. This social butterfly should not be left alone for long periods of time, as they can be prone to developing separation anxiety—they're definitely a "people pup. With a beautiful and cuddly coat, round brown eyes, and a playful demeanor, they will melt your heart especially when they look at you with an adorable head tilt. Depending on which traits she inherits from her parents, the Westiepoo may have longer legs like the poodle, or she may be rather short, stout, and rectangular like the Westie. Her coat is typically of medium length and can be rough and wiry a trait from the Westie or soft and curly from her poodle parent. If she inherits the "hypoallergenic" poodle coat , your Westiepoo might be a good fit for those who struggle with dog allergies. But know there's no dog that's percent hypoallergenic , so spend time with the breed before bringing home a Westiepoo puppy. But Westiepoos don't shed much , so you won't need to whip out the vacuum and lint roller too often. Most Westiepoos inherit a white coat from their West Highland white terrier parent, but poodles come in a wide range of colors. You can find everything from black Westiepoos to golden Westiepoos, with cream and brown coats in the mix, too. Temperament Westiepoos are very social dogs and love to meet new people, especially when they're socialized well in puppyhood. Outgoing and friendly, they'll happily greet strangers on a walk or trip to the dog park. But they do have some terrier instincts and might be quick to sound the alarm whenever someone's at the door. However, both of their parent breeds were bred to hunt , and Westiepoos can maintain that high prey drive. This means your pup might be tempted to chase cats, squirrels, and other small animals. But if you bring a Westiepoo puppy into a home with a cat, they can thrive together with proper introductions. She does well with training after all, her poodle side used to be circus performers! Enrolling her in puppy kindergarten classes early on is highly encouraged as it will help both owner and pup learn and grow together. Westiepoos are reward-oriented dogs, so rewarding them with treats for positive behavior is a must to help them learn new tricks and cues. Living Needs Westiepoos are great companions for families , singles, seniors, or children. These loveable balls of fur adore attention, so giving them lots of love and playtime should be a daily priority. They aren't opposed to a lazy night snuggling on the couch, either! They thrive in a busy family home or homes where people spend a lot of time at home—such as those who work from home or are retired. Westiepoos don't need as much exercise as some other breeds, but a minute daily walk and a fenced-in area to play and sniff will be appreciated. You may also be able to tire them out by playing fetch indoors or tug-of-war with a favorite toy. But it's easy for this highly social breed to develop separation anxiety if they're on their own for too long too frequently. If you are regularly out of the house for more than a few hours at a time, consider hiring a dog walker or dog sitter to keep your Westiepoo company. And because they're so small, you might be able to keep your pup right by your side when you travel or run errands. Care The Westiepoo's luscious locks are surprisingly easy to care for. Whether their fur is curly or wiry, these fur babies don't shed much, if at all. Their hair can get easily matted if left to its own devices, so regular brushing and a bath every four to six weeks is important. Keep their nails trimmed short , and trimming the hair around a Westiepoos eyes and ears is also advised; if left unkempt around their ears, they may get irritated or infected. Whether you're teaching the basics or showing off their skills with fun tricks , always use positive reinforcement methods for the best results—and a happy dog. Health Westiepoos are generally healthy dogs. If properly cared for, they can live for anywhere between 12—15 years. This doesn't go without saying that they aren't prone to some health issues, especially in their later years. Common issues you may face with this breed are epilepsy , skin problems, hip dysplasia , and cardiac disease. The Westiepoo may also be susceptible to obesity and early tooth loss, which is why regular exercise and dental care are vital for this breed. Keep up with regular veterinarian visits to keep your pup healthy. These pups can be in high demand, prompting some breeders to operate without the health of their dogs as the top priority. Be wary of any "miniature Westiepoo" or "teacup Westiepoo" advertisements. If you want a smaller Westiepoo, find one with a toy poodle parent; "teacup" dogs often come with health problems due to unethical breeding practices. To find a reputable Westiepoo breeder, keep an eye out for these puppy mill warning signs : The breeder offers to ship a puppy. The kennel breeds multiple types of dogs. Contact information is difficult to find online. The website offers specific wait times for puppies. History Westiepoos are a more recent dog breed, so there isn't a ton of history on them. They are thought to be first bred in the Americas around ; the idea was to breed a dog that would inherit the better qualities of both a West Highland white terrier and a toy or miniature poodle. But their two parent breeds have long histories. The West Highland white terrier was originally bred to hunt down vermin and rodents. According to the West Highland White Terrier Club of America , these scrappy dogs were bred to have a white coat to distinguish them from the foxes while on hunts. The American Kennel Club recognized them in .Poodles were first recognized by the American Kennel Club a bit earlier in .As the years went by, they split the breed into three different sizes: standard , miniature, and toy. Poodles were first bred to be a duck-hunting dog in Germany almost years ago, and the breed later became the beloved and cherished national dog of France. Fun Facts Although the Westiepoo is a popular designer dog, the breed is not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. You might find Westiepoos called a few different names, including the Westiedoodle or the wee-poo. Was this page helpful? Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Westiepoo Highlights Westiepoos are mixed breed dogs. The most common colors of coat for a Westiepoo are white or cream and sometimes black or tan. Introduce your Westiepoo to any other pets and set boundaries right from the start; although, the breed might not be a good fit for a cat-friendly household. The Westiepoo is an excellent mix of a super loving and very active dog. When it comes to the Poodle, the breed goes right back to ancient Egypt, but they became popular in France as a duck hunting dog. The Westiepoo has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. Westiepoo Size The Westiepoo is usually described as a small dog. Although, as is always the case with newer mixed dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 20 to 35 pounds and range in height from eleven to 17 inches. Westiepoo Personality The Westiepoo is an excellent mix of a super loving and very active dog. This goes for being around children, too. Walks should be on the brisk side, and ideally include safe off-leash sessions. Reward-based training is also key to prevent any stubborn streaks developing. While the Westiepoo is generally a friendly dog, they do have a hunting heritage and are not usually recommended as a good fit for households that already have existing small pets. Westiepoo Health Westiepoos are generally considered to be healthy dogs; although, the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the West Highland White Terrier and Poodle face. Some of the more common health problems Westiepoos suffer from include: Epilepsy. Hair grows very slowly and doesn't shed. Has vocabulary of approx. Very healthy but had torn ligament on the right rear knee 1 year ago unknown cause. Amazing hybrid. He is the sweetest little dog ever and he is full of energy! She loves playing games and also loves to sit on our laps and have a cuddle. We called her Chou-fleur because when she curls up to sleep she looks like a cauliflower! He gets along great with my brother's older dog, Einstein. They even share toys when they play together. He gets along very well with our seven-year-old tabby cat Tengo. This little black girl is 9 weeks old and already trying to be potty trained! She is having a little trouble teaching me when to put her out! The puppies are wonderful and her and her sisters are very quiet and patient. We began breeding Westiepoos in early because I loved both breeds, and I love the hybrid! We have a lot of great feedback from new owners. Bought all 3 seasons on DVD. Learn something new every time. Mega is a very friendly, loving pooch. Not fearful, but clearly not aggressive. White with patches of blonde, blue, and silver Suitable for: Attentive, families, small homes apartments Temperament: Friendly, social, attentive, short-tempered If you were thinking about getting one of these pets for your home but would like to learn more about it first, keep breathing while we discuss temperament, diet, grooming, and more to help you make an informed decision. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Westiepoo Puppies A post shared by Westie Match westie. However, with patience, dedication, and the right techniques, they can be successfully trained, and the result is definitely worth it! It gets along well with children and is usually tolerant of rough play. They enjoy being around people and participating in family activities so they can get upset if you spend a lot of time away from home. It may start barking, digging holes, or chewing on furniture. Service dogs are better suited to people who spend plenty of time at home. Since the Westiepoo has a poodle as a parent, it will be extremely intelligent, both a blessing and a curse. It will be easy to teach new tricks, and they will find where to help you around the house. However, they have a strong will and can be difficult to sway once they want something. Are These Dogs Good for Families? The Westiepoo, as we mentioned earlier, these dogs enjoy being around family members and are tolerant with children. It has plenty of energy for games, and a large family will help it get the exercise and needs, while its smaller size makes it suitable for smaller homes and apartments. The Westiepoo gets along extremely well with other dog breeds and is usually friendly and outgoing on the walking trail. However, like many terriers, it has a strong prey drive and may chase small cats, rabbits, and squirrels. Early socialization can help it get along with other pets, but it will be hard to control in the yard. We recommend choosing brands with real meat like chicken, beef, turkey, or salmon listed as the first ingredient. Brands that provide real fruits and vegetables, like broccoli, pumpkin, blueberries, and more, can provide important vitamins and minerals that your pet needs. Avoid foods with chemical preservatives or artificial dyes, and make sure any corn or soy ingredients are lower down the list and not near the beginning. Luckily, its smaller size means that a good walk each day will allow the dog to burn off most of its excess energy. We recommend setting at least 30 minutes aside each day to walk or play with your Westiepoo to keep it healthy and less likely to disturb you while you sleep at night. Bored dogs often resort to barking or other bad behavior to get the attention it craves. At least when it feels like learning. Giving the dog plenty of treats and other positive reinforcement will keep it coming back for more. Consistency and patience are your keys to success. Even a highly intelligent dog like the Westiepoo can take several weeks to learn a new trick and commit it to memory. However, it will require frequent brushing because the fur can get tangled and knotted. The longer you let it go, the more painful it will be for the dog, which will cause it to hate grooming. Start grooming early when the dog is still a puppy to help it get used to it and brush frequently , so there will be less uncomfortable hair pulling. If your dog spends most of its time in the house, you will need to trim the nails when you hear them clicking on the floor. Size Life Span Westiepoos are not a purebred dog. They are a cross between a West Highland Terrier and a Poodle. Before deciding if you should add a Westiepoo to your family, you should research both dog breeds separately and make comparisons. This mixed dog breed is playful, affectionate, and cheerful. They adore meeting new people and pups, but will need plenty of socialization at a young age. Westiepoos are also intelligent, loyal, sweet, and loving. These characteristics make them perfect for a medium-sized or growing family. The Westiepoo tends to be wonderful with children, but can be somewhat protective around strangers. This outgoing and social dog breed can be prone to barking because of their protective streak. But, they can be trained to calm down quickly and quietly if given positive reinforcement and patience. Because they are somewhat active, Westiepoos will need some space. They are best-suited in small or medium-sized homes with a small yard. This will give them plenty of space to romp without harming themselves or others. This dog breed adores being around their family and can be very affectionate. The Westiepoo thrives in growing families and enjoys that there is always someone to cuddle or play with throughout the day. If you have children that are in school, and you work outside the home, it may be best to bring them to work if possible. Because Westiepoos are a mixed breed, they will have a larger gene pool to pull from. They may be less likely to have chronic issues that are associated with their purebred counterparts, but they may also still inherit them from one of both of their parents. They do, however, need to have regular veterinary checkups to keep up with exams, vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and topical flea and tick preventative measures. Although Westiepoos are a generally healthy breed, they may fall ill with addisons, patellar luxation, hypothyroidism, craniomandibular osteopathy, and pulmonary fibrosis. Westiepoo puppies are somewhat easy to train, but will need plenty of patience and positive reinforcement. Results from training will come gradually and will remain over time as long as you are consistent. If your Westiepoo is your first pet, you may want to work with a trainer. Regular grooming is required for the Westiepoo. You should brush your dog every day and bathe them as needed. Make sure to have your dog groomed every season so they can stay comfortable and healthy. Proper dental care for dogs is also important for preventing painful dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. The Westiepoo is fairly active and will need daily exercise. The best exercise for a Westiepoo is at least an hour walk every day. A trip to the dog park multiple times a week will also keep them healthy and calm. Just be sure to bring plenty of water for you and your dog and maybe even a doggie-safe backpack in case they need a break. A Westiepoo usually stands 9 to 16 inches tall and weighs 30 to 40 pounds. This mixed dog breed generally lives 12 to 15 years. Featured Westiepoo Article.

With the Labradoodles love of people, they do best living inside as a part of the family. While Labradoodles are a cross between a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Poodle, most people don't realize the Australian Labradoodle has a lineage of several purebred breeds including the Labrador Retriever, the Poodle, and the English or American Cocker Spaniel. To be classified as an Australian Labradoodle the dog's pedigree must include a combination of these three breeds. The multiple generations of breeding, or multigens, should produce the finest coats, qualities, and appearance. The Australian Labradoodle tends to be multigenerational while Labradoodles can be a variety of generations from early first crosses to multigenerational. What makes a Labradoodle? F1 or "First Cross" is a puppy from a purebred Poodle parent and a purebred Labrador Retriever parent. Because this is a breeding between two dogs that do not resemble each other, these puppies have a wide variety of coats from flat hairy short coats to very woolly poodle coats. Coats vary in length, thickness and texture and can range from completely non-shedding to shedding. These puppies' coats are perfected due to their Poodle parent, however the results are mixed as this is not a pairing between two like dogs. Coats are typically low to non-shedding. Multigenerational or "Multigen" is a puppy with parents who are both Labradoodles. The infused breeds include American and English Cocker Spaniel. The resulting Labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry. Our Doods have just the right blend of personality and unique characteristics to make the perfect companion. Measure from the floor up to the mark to see how tall your dog is. It is an easy to manage textured coat but does require management weekly. Wool: curly hair but still feels silky. It should have the appearance of looser spiraling wool which opens up easily to the skin. Hair: not considered a type as a standard but some of the early generations may display this type of coat straight and course like a Labrador but can also be wavy. This coat is usually seen in early generations and not ALDs. There are solid colors, and patterns such as parti, phantom, abstract, sable, brindle, merle and multi.
