In comparison to a small irritation, injury is far more serious. This usually happens if the eye itself has been damaged. This could be due to a number of reasons, some more serious than others. Due to the eye trying to heal itself, it will create more tears than normal which will lead to an increase in eye boogers. If an infection occurs as a result of the injury, this is another cause too. Tear Ducts Given that it is the tear ducts that produce tears, which then lead to eye boogers, these are a common reason why your dog will have eye boogers. However, if excess tears are being created, then this can cause more eye boogers than normal. In addition to this, it may be a sign that there is a problem with the tear ducts themselves. If the tear ducts are overactive or are creating more tears than necessary, this is called epiphora. Epiphora is surprisingly common in dogs, and the side effects can vary from mild to severe. In the vast majority of cases, it is nothing to be too concerned about. When looking at the fur color of German Shepherds, as the fur around their eyes is darker, it is unlikely you will notice this happening. It is typically white furred dogs that it is more noticeable with. This is because the excess tears and boogers will stain lighter fur a dark brown color. This is due to the fluid reacting to the oxygen in the air, which then leads to the staining. However, while you may not notice the staining, you may notice an odor. It is not overly pleasant, and is typically a sign that the tear ducts are producing too many tears. While eye diseases are not too common with German Shepherds, they still can be contracted over time, and eye boogers are a typical side effect of this. With diseases, the eye boogers that are created will typically be thick, gunky, and not a typical color. You will be able to notice the differences easily. A type of disease that the German Shepherd can have is Pannus. This is a serious condition and will cause the eyesight to become impaired. It is painful and something that needs to be diagnosed. It requires ongoing treatment. Crusty Crusty eye boogers are common and are something that you typically do not need to worry about. They are typically caused by the tears from the eyes drying in the corner of the eyes. They show that the eye is cleaning itself correctly, and are not typically anything to worry about. Goopy Goopy eye boogers are similar to ones that are crusty. These are usually what crusty eye boogers are before they dry. If the consistency is normal, and there is not an excessive amount, this is normal. The tears when mixed with oils and dirt from the eye can cause these boogers to be slightly brown, which is nothing to be concerned about. Watery If the eye boogers are particularly runny, this is linked to the tear production. Too much of this type of discharge means that the eye is producing too many tears. Mucousy Mucousy eye boogers can be a sign of infection, especially if they are yellow or green. However, if the eye boogers are clear or white with this consistency, this means that the eyes are producing more tears to lubricate the eye. If this persists, your German Shepherd may be suffering from dry eyes, which can be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Tear Stains Tears will cause the fur around the eyes to turn brown when the tears are exposed to oxygen. This is typically nothing to worry about, but it does not always look pleasant. Infected If there is pus in the eye boogers, or if they are green or yellow, this is a sign of infection. You will need to get this checked over, as it can be a sign of an underlying health problem. Every dog is different and will produce slightly different eye boogers. This is why it is important to be familiar with your dog so that you can keep an eye out for any signs or changes. How To Clean Eye Boogers When you are cleaning the eye boogers, ensure you are using a product that is safe. We would recommend either using eye wipes, or a cotton pad with warm water. You will want to wipe both eyes separately. This will help to stop any potential infection from transferring, and this will keep both eyes as clean as possible. There are criteria you need to assess in order to determine if the eye boogers should be concerning. These should also be considered together. Please also note that these criteria are not limited to German Shepherd eye boogers but can be applied to other dogs. Rate How often is your dog getting eye boogers? If you have to clean one or two boogers now and then particularly in the morning , there is probably no underlying issue. If your German Shepherd always has eye boogers, there may be something amiss. Amount How big are the eye boogers? If your German Shepherd has a small little ball of gunk right in the very corner of his eye, there is less cause for immediate concern than if the hair beneath his eyes is a mess of slime and hair. These tears wash out the debris and soothe the corneal injury. There are two kinds of eye boogers associated with this cause: watery discharge during the initial flushing or soothing, and clear or dirty goop or crusts. Have you ever noticed an eyelash stick in your eye boogers? The same happens in German Shepherds, producing the goop or crusts. Mechanical irritation is common but is usually isolated. If you are renovating your house or there have been fires in your area, and there is more particulate matter in the air, the occurrence of these eye boogers may increase, but should not concern you if there are no signs of deeper trouble. Allergens like pollen cause irritation, but this is manifested internally as it triggers an immune response. The quantity of eye boogers depends on the severity of the reaction. Allergies will not present with eye boogers only. Your German Shepherd will probably have red and itchy eyes, so watch for face rubbing and scratching. The allergens are also likely to affect the upper respiratory tract, so your German Shepherd may start sneezing. In cases of a severe allergic reaction, yellow or green pus can be generated by the eye. In this case, and if the allergic response is prolonged, consult a veterinarian, who can prescribe an antihistamine. Infection Causes Eye Boogers Conjunctivitis is the most common eye infection. It is an inflammation of the conjunctival lining. Causes of conjunctivitis range from birth defects to distemper to foreign bodies. As with conjunctivitis, causes of epiphora range widely. Malformation or malfunctioning of the tear ducts causes epiphora. Typically, you will notice this from birth unless some trauma has damaged the tear duct, but such an injury is not likely to go unnoticed by you. Allergies, pain, corneal ulcers, etc. Treatment or epiphora will depend on the diagnosis from your veterinarian. Dry eye is caused by distemper, injury, or auto-immune diseases. The eye boogers associated with dry are thick and sticky mucous. The eye is unable to produce enough tears and compensates by producing extra mucous. Dry eye is very uncomfortable for your Germans Shepherd, as you can imagine. They will have red, scratchy, and painful eyes and are at risk for developing infection and corneal ulcers. Your German Shepherd will probably be quite miserable if they have dry eye. Take them to the veterinarian for treatment. Of course, it is not the only ocular disease that can affect your dog, but German Shepherds are genetically predisposed to suffer from this degenerative condition. Pannus affects both eyes, but not to the same degree. The mass will spread over the cornea, becoming darker, and sight will eventually be impaired. Mucous eye boogers can accompany the development of the mass. Pannus is not curable, but it can be treated to halt the progression. If your German Shepherd is diagnosed with pannus, they will have to be put onto chronic corticosteroids which comes with its own issues. You will also probably have to get your dog a pair of sunglasses as UV light facilitates the progression of this disease. Alternatively, you can use a cotton pad not cottonwool as it is too fibrous or a clean, soft cloth soaked in warm water. Gently wipe away from the eye. Use a new cotton pad or fabric for each eye as one can be infected and the other not, so the infection could spread if you use the same cloth or pad. They spend money on vet checks, quality food and toys for the whole litter. When you visit your puppy, their parents will have a strong and obvious bond with the breeder. And a purpose beyond producing babies, such as an agility dog or a valued family pet. How much your puppy will cost is a question that can have different answers based on the generation of the puppies too. By generation we mean f1 versus f1b: F1 Goldendoodle puppies have one Poodle parent dog and one Golden Retriever parent dog. F1b Goldendoodle puppies have at least one Goldendoodle parent dog. It is easier to control important issues such as coat shedding, personality, temperament, health concerns and adult size when breeding f1b Goldendoodle puppies. Most breeders will choose to specialize in either f1 or f1b Goldendoodles, although some breeders will breed both dogs. Future litters of f1b Goldendoodles two Goldendoodle parent dogs will be f2b, f3b, f4b and so forth. One of these puppies can change quite a bit in the course of a year or two. Plus, it is important to remember that they are lively, active, and energetic dogs in general. This does not always work out well once the owner discovers how much time and energy their new puppy requires. This can result in a Goldendoodle puppy being returned to the breeder or surrendered to a shelter or rescue center while it waits for a new home. Under the right circumstances, that new home could be yours. These dogs typically have loose, wavy coats. The downside of the F1 generation is they tend to still shed some—less than a purebred Golden Retriever but more than some of the later generations we discuss below. F2 vs F1? However, again, you are likely to have some shedding. The F2 generation is actually the most unpredictable in regard to hair type as a simple Punnett Square illustration would reveal. Some of the puppies are likely to get two copies of the Golden Retriever flat coat gene so may still be quite heavy shedders. This generation is a good choice for people who love both the Golden Retriever and Poodle personalities and want a good mixture of both breeds but are flexible on hair type and shedding. F1 vs F1b? These puppies typically have wavy to curly coats and reduced shedding. The F1b generation is a good choice for allergy sufferers or those who simply want less fur to clean up around the house. Most breeders would avoid this type of F1b as the result would be a dog that sheds as much as Golden Retriever, but it is still good to know to avoid potential confusion. Quiz time: What would you call the puppy born to an F2 Goldendoodle and a Poodle? F1bb vs F1b? In this case, an F1b Goldendoodle has been backcrossed again to a purebred Poodle. While this may sound like a lot of Poodle, the result is a predictably curly, low-shedding coat that is great for allergy-sufferers. As doodle breeders, we have a lot of positive things to say about our poodle parents and the Poodle breed as a whole — you can read more about their history and characteristics here. In the case of an F1bb Goldendoodle —the dog will be more similar to a Poodle in regards to coat, physical structure and certain traits but still have a little dash of retriever to keep things interesting! Put simply it means you are now 3 generations removed from the original cross of Golden Retriever to Poodle, so this can look like an F2 Goldendoodle bred to another Goldendoodle. In this case, most reputable breeders have been careful in selecting their parents and would avoid breeding straight coated, high-shedding parents. An F3 can also mean an F1b X an F1b. This would of course be similar in regards to coat type and breed percentage breakdown as an F1b. The multigenerational doodle could be any combination of Goldendoodle parents past the third generation. The positive side of the multigenerational doodle is that these are typically one of the best options for allergy sufferers as a reputable breeder has been careful to select non-shedding parents in their line; the more generations removed from the original shedding parents i. Golden Retriever , the less chance of any sly shedding genes slipping in! Understanding F1 vs F2 vs F1b vs F2b Is Not Essential At the end of the day, we often tell our puppy parents to not get too hung up on the exact terminology related to the generation of their pup. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. Contrary to what some negative breeders are saying, YES, they can be registered with the AKC, but because of the Pug parent Club, they are not permitted in the show ring. This is only reserved for the standard Fawn and Black colors at this time. So what is the big deal some might ask, or how did this color come into existence.Well good questions. Lets start with what is the big deal. To those of us serious about the Pug breed it is important to us, to enter in fresh and new bloodlines. For so many generations only the Fawn Pug was considered right and proper, and any other color or variation was put down right away. And we are finding out, that many of these colors and variations have genes attached which are now again being realized, because frankly, responsible breeders are not killing puppies, if they are too dark or too light anymore. The big deal is we are now seeing colors that represent the Pug breed in every way as far as structure and personality, but they have a different color, and in our opinion it is amazing and awesome. The white color is brilliant and unique. It also gives people with a great love of Pugs to have a colorful collection, while still enjoying the calm loving nature of the Pug breed. Now for the question of how this color came in to existence.Nobody truly knows. There is photographic evidence of white Pugs that belonged to royalty. BUT, we do not have proof in lineage that these dogs were bred, or used in any kind of kennel registry. Most white Pugs today can credit their heritage to a small breeder in Pennsylvania, that somehow had a White Pug born and then he duplicated it. His name was John Lapp, and some of his dogs made their way to the west coast where breeders there worked hard to duplicate the color, by using only Pugs in their programs and then breeding these whites into existing Pug lineages. The result is today's white Pug. Brilliant in every way, and has the same personality as any other colored Pug. In our opinion, it is SO much better to see responsible and reputable AKC breeders of the Pug breed working at new and radiant colors and variations, than those who think taking the Pug dog and matching it up to other breeds, in the thought that they would duplicate somehow the personality of the Pug. With many "new" breeds being created for no other purpose than to make a quick buck, and shows zero heritage or lineage, using dogs that for whatever reason were not good enough to be bred up with their own kind. Please also do not believe some ignorant "show" breeders who state quite openly that white Pugs can not be registered, or are not Pugs, but an abomination created mixing with another breed. They are NOT. They only issue chance in the DNA is the coloration, which is apparently present. It is almost like saying that a person born from one black parent and one white parent is not a person.They are the same as everybody else with a small difference in coloration. SO, with all this in mind. Some of us who are responsible breeders and with only AKC Pug dogs decided we needed to join together.
