Corbin has come a LONG way since he arrived in Canada last summer and moved into a home for the first time in his life. He was a feral dog in Texas in his previous life, and lived with his sister on the edges of society, always between people, surviving by not being caught until one day he was. Suddenly this regal dog found himself trembling on the cold hard floor of a shelter, on the list to be killed. Its easy to understand why its hard for Corbin to feel safe around anyone but other dogs, but for the past year hes been developing an appreciation for life as a domestic house dog and his true character has slowly been emerging. Corbin will always feel most comfortable in the company of other dogs, and loves most of the usual things dogs love. Hes wild about going on walks, especially in the forest, and will happily spend his day hunting and harassing rodents. He loves sprinting freely across a grassy yard now, something he never had the chance to do in Houston. A frozen marrow bone in his crate delights him for a few hours of luxurious chewing. Watching him revel in life is an absolute joy! He enjoys head and butt scratches, and will sometimes even ask for affection. However, the instinct to stay out of reach runs deep in this handsome dog. He will not come when called; he will at best follow other dogs who do, but even then will stay at distance from accompanying humans. He isnt at all aggressive in the least, just very shy and wary. Every day he grows more confident, so much so that now hes ready to take on any bicycles and pickup trucks that have the nerve to pass him on the street. Corbins best life includes a large fenced-in yard and at least one, preferably more, other friendly dogs. Hes pretty curious about most things, even if hes a bit scared, so hed probably do ok in a either suburban or rural environment. A busy city would be too much for someone whos afraid of people getting close enough to touch him. Hes not a dog to adopt if youre looking for someone to play fetch with. Corbins the boy for someone whos content to make a deserving dogs dreams come true, where he can lounge peacefully in the sunshine, chase chippies and explore the neighbourhood with his pack mates. Corbin was born with bad hip dysplasia on one side, and doesnt like to use his rear right leg. He still gets around fine on 3 legs and can run faster than you! He does appreciate a daily pain reliever like gabapentin. Apply to adopt this animal at lastminutedogrescue. Corbin is still skittish, so you can't reprimand him for peeing in the house as this will cause him to piddle. Poor baby.

Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. The Earliest Records of Apricot Poodles in History Poodles are a very old breed, having been present in paintings as far back as the 15th century. In those times, however, most Poodles would have been parti-colored or white. This beautiful new coloration became very popular throughout the United Kingdom, but it would take hundreds of years for the Apricot Poodle to become prevalent in other Poodle sizes. During these formative years, the apricot coloration began spreading throughout several continents. These descendants of the original English Apricot Poodles are responsible for all the beautiful Apricots we have today. Poodle breeding slowed down during WWII but picked up again in the s thanks to two apricot kennels in England dedicated to producing Apricot Poodles. Because this coloration is very rare and recessive, not many puppies are available in this color. Though Apricots are highly sought after, the lack of availability makes them less popular than they could be. It took a bit longer for other clubs to recognize the breed. Not every kennel club accepts apricot as a standardized color. For example, the Federation Cynologique Internationale, the Belgium-based kennel club, only recognizes black, white, brown, grey, and fawn as Poodle colors. People planning to show their Poodles must know that there are restrictions on size, specific clips necessary for its coat, and preferred coloring for its nose, lips, eye rims, and eyes. Many people, even breeders, confuse their Poodle colors. Even Poodle breeders will occasionally mix up the colorations. Sometimes even deep cream-colored Poodles will get mistaken for apricots. True Apricot Poodles have a diluted brown, yet bright and sunny, color to them. However, it can get even more confusing when you consider that many Apricot Poodles have some color deviation in their coat, such as slightly darker feathering on the ears. Apricot Poodles can fade over time. Many tan-colored or light brown Poodles can fade into an apricot shade as they age. Apricot Poodles are the rarest color. You know by now that Poodles come in a wide array of colors. Its parents were liver brown and white, which made it only logical that the puppy would also be a liver-y color. However, as time went on and the puppy grew up, its owner noticed that it had a different color tone and should be considered its unique shade. Poodles of all sizes and colorations make fantastic pets. Coloring does not play a role in the personality or temperament of any puppy. Poodles are extremely intelligent, easy to train , and very social animals. They are very lively and active, thriving on the attention from their humans. However, Poodles need training to nip bad habits in the bud, such as nuisance barking or aggression. Miniature and Toy varieties can live as old as 17, while Standards tend to live between 12 and 14 years. Grooming is a necessity for Poodles of any size. Their coats can become matted, so they need to visit a groomer often and be brushed daily. Apricot appears in all three sizes of Poodles: Standard, Miniature and Toy. The beautiful shade as well as the rarity of this color makes apricot Poodles highly sought-after. Today we will look at this type of Poodle as its characteristics. Even AKC Poodle breeders sometimes categorize their dogs under the wrong color. Apricot is a dilution of brown. Ideally it should appear to be a bright, sunny color. Apricot is difficult to breed for as it is a recessive gene and it quickly fades in UV light. If your Poodle spends a lot of time outside, his apricot color will soon look like a lighter cream color. The nose and eye rims of an apricot Poodle should ideally be black or dark brown. A medium-colored brown is accepted as per the breed standard, but not encouraged. History of apricot-colored Poodles Poodles have been around for a long time. Some paintings show Poodles in the 15th and 16th century. Back then, most Poodles would have been white or parti-colored. The new color quickly became popular and was bred mainly in the UK. It would take a while before the color became prevalent in the other Poodle varieties though: Only in , the first apricot Miniature Poodle was born. In the s, Poodles became more and more popular in North America and have been a beloved companion dog ever since. Due to the rarity of the apricot color and its recessive nature, not a lot of Poodles are available in this color! Are apricot Poodles rare? Yes — apricot Poodles are very rare! As a recessive color, apricot is only shown in a puppy if both parents carry a copy of the gene. Most Poodles are black or white with the occasional Parti Poodle who has two colors. Other Poodle colors such as red, cream, blue or brown are allowed by the breed standard but less common. The apricot Poodle is very rare among the Poodle colors, which makes these dogs very sought-after and potentially pricey. Some puppy buyers have to be on a waitlist for an apricot puppy for months or years. You should only decide for these dogs if you are willing to be patient and wait for your perfect apricot puppy for a long time. As all Poodles, apricot Poodles have a tendency to develop gastrointestinal issues. You should only feed your dog high-quality food and make sure that you take him to the vet if he shows any signs of diarrhea or vomiting. Like all Poodles, apricot Poodles are highly intelligent and will require daily exercise and training. A bored and under-exercised Poodle will quickly develop a range of unwanted behaviors, such as reactivity, incessant barking or chewing of furniture. Grooming your apricot Poodle Every color Poodle will require regular, consistent grooming efforts in order to keep the coat beautiful and the skin healthy. Letting your Poodle develop mats will lead to hot spots and can even cause severe skin infections. You need to brush your Poodle every day. He should also be bathed with a Poodle-specific shampoo about once a month. Many Poodle owners choose to have this done by a professional groomer. Depending on whether you want to show your Poodle or not, you can keep his coat either in a full show groom or a more convenient haircut. The teddy bear cut is very popular especially for Miniature Poodles. Training Poodles are generally easy to train as they are highly intelligent and love to work together with their owner. They excel at a variety of dog sports, such as agility, competition obedience, disc dog or dock diving. Especially for those dogs, participating in a weekly dog sport will be very beneficial. If you choose to show your dog in AKC conformation events, you will need to train them to show well in the show ring. This includes walking and trotting on the leash and standing still while the judge examines your dog. The most common behavioral problems in apricot Poodles are anxiety, nervousness and excessive barking. Extensive socialization is necessary to turn them into well-mannered and calm companions. This includes positive exposure to people, dogs, different places and a variety of sounds. Poodles can show prey drive. Do not underestimate that and make sure to teach your dog impulse control and recall skills. This is especially important if your Poodle is sharing your home with smaller animals, such as cats. How much do apricot Poodles cost? As a rare color, you can expect to pay more for an apricot Poodle of either size. The Bottom Line Apricot Poodles are very popular due to their unusual coloring and their rarity. Many owners are drawn to this special kind of Poodle because they are so unique. It is important to not let rarity alone be a deciding factor when it comes to picking your future puppy though! You should never buy any dog Poodle or not for his color alone. Apricot Poodles will require the same care, grooming, training and exercise as any other kind of Poodle. Due to the at times nervous nature of this breed, it is really important that they are well-socialized and get a lot of positive exposure, especially during their puppyhood. Apricot Poodles excel at a variety of dog sports and will love to participate in those with their owner! Due to the limited supply of apricot Poodles, expect to be put on a waitlist for a potential puppy. The price will likely be higher than that for a more common Poodle color as well. Being patient pays off though: These dogs are amazing companions that will brighten up every day! Unleash the real potential of your companion! We will email you daily with training tips, ideas and videos. This is an introductory course into our training philosophy. You will get customized video lessons based on your training goals — and you can implement them in just 5 minutes a day. The apricot patches are usually located on their ears, around their eyes and on their backs. The apricot patches are very light in color and are somewhere between a light red and a cream with peachy undertones. If these changes occur, it will be within the first two years of their lives which will make them look like a cream and white Poodle. Light Apricot Poodle Light Apricot Poodles have a coat that is almost cream in color with peachy undertones. Phantom Poodles have a coat with a solid background and a secondary color in patches in very specific locations. These locations include the chin, throat, chest, legs, beneath their tail, above their eyes or on the sides of their muzzle. In this case the solid background is black and the secondary color is apricot. Apricot Sable Poodle Sable Poodles have hairs that are black-tipped with roots in a lighter solid color, specifically apricot. The sable hairs cover most of their body and they usually have a white patches on their chest, muzzle and paws. The black tips of the sable hairs are usually most prominent on the end of their ears and on the top of their heads. Apricot Poodle With White Chest Some Apricot Poodles are not fully apricot in color but rather feature white patches on their chest, paws, chin and top of their muzzle. That being said, Apricot Poodles with white chests are not as common as fully Apricot Poodles. You are more likely to find apricot and white coats in Poodle mix breeds like Maltipoos and Cavapoos.

Living With: The boxer has a high need for companionship and exercise. If these needs are not met, boxers can be destructive if left alone in the house. Boxers are ideal for people who want a canine companion with them most of the time or for larger busy families with homes that are often occupied by someone. They can do well on a country estate or in a city apartment as long as they have the opportunity to romp and expel energy. If you live in an urban area, regular walks are necessary. Boxers are intolerant of hot weather, and care must be taken to prevent them from getting overheated. They also need protection from the cold since they are short-coated. Their coats, however, are very easy to care for and will be shiny and bright as long as they have a good diet, are bathed occasionally, and are given regular rub-downs with a grooming mitt or brushings with a rubber curry. Some boxers drool excessively, and some snort and snore. Like other larger dogs, boxers are not particularly long-lived. Their life expectancy ranges from about seven to 10 years. History: Boxers are descendants of extinct bullenbaiser breeds crossed with mastiff, bulldog and possibly Great Dane and even a terrier. They were developed in Germany in the 19th century, initially as bull baiting dogs and later as butcher's helpers, controlling cattle in slaughterhouses. Some breed historians say boxers are named from the German word boxl, their slaughterhouse designation. Other fanciers contend the name boxer comes from the characteristic way that they use their forepaws to play, sparring much like a human boxer. After the breed rose to become among the most popular in America. Boxers are considered working dogs. They were one of the first breeds employed as a police dog, and they have been used as seeing-eye dogs. But they are also bred to be companion and guard dogs, perhaps best known for being loyal family pets that are especially fond of children. Related Pet Care Articles. Boxers reach full maturity at three years, boasting intelligence, alertness, and fearlessness, while remaining friendly. With minimal grooming needs, Boxers make excellent family companions, as long as they receive ample physical exercise and mental stimulation. Their origin traces back to Germany, and their short, shiny coats are usually fawn or brindle with white markings. Docked tails and cropped ears are common, but many owners now prefer leaving them natural. Boxers are renowned for their love and loyalty, often trying to be lapdogs. The Bullenbeisser was used as a hunting dog for centuries to hunt bear, wild boar, and deer, tasked with catching and holding the prey until hunters arrived. Over time, Bullenbeissers lost their jobs on estates and began to be used by farmers and butchers to guard and drive cattle. The Boxer we know today was developed in the late 19th century when a Munich man named Georg Alt bred a brindle-colored female Bullenbeisser named Flora with a local dog of unknown origin. Schecken was then bred to an English Bulldog named Tom to produce a dog named Flocki, who became the first Boxer to be entered in the German Stud Book after winning at a Munich show that had a special event for Boxers. One of her pups was a white female named Meta von der Passage, considered to be the mother of the Boxer breed, even though photographs of her show that she bore little resemblance to the modern Boxer. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white parti-color, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing bitch few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day. The breed became known in other parts of Europe in the late s. Around , the first Boxers were imported into the U. Lehman of New York. When Word War I broke out, Boxers were enlisted into the military, serving as messenger dogs, carrying packs and acting as attack and guard dogs. Boxers started becoming popular in the U. Through them, the breed was introduced to more people and soon became a favorite companion animal, show dog, and guard dog. In the early days, there was a lot of controversy within the club about the Boxer standard. In , the club finally approved a new standard. The latest revisions of the standard were in .Today, the Boxer ranks 7th among the breeds and varieties registered by the AKC. Boxer Size The height at the shoulder for males usually ranges from .Females typically stand 21 to .Strangers are met with wariness, but they respond politely to friendly people. They display aggression only in defense of their family and home. Temperament is influenced by factors like heredity, training , and socialization. Boxer puppies with good temperaments are curious, playful, and open to approaching and being held by people. Socialization, early exposure to diverse experiences, people, and places, is crucial to ensure they grow up as well-rounded, friendly dogs. Enrolling them in puppy kindergarten classes and regular interactions with visitors, neighbors, and various environments help develop their social skills. Boxer Health Boxers are generally a healthy breed, but like all dogs, they have certain health conditions to be aware of. Here are some conditions to watch out for, along with precautions: Cancer : Boxers are prone to mast cell tumors, lymphoma, and brain tumors. White Boxers with excessive white markings can get sunburned and may develop skin cancer. Apply sunscreen to their ears, nose, and coat when they go outdoors. This condition can lead to fainting and sudden death. A veterinary cardiologist can diagnose it after detecting a heart murmur. Affected dogs should not be bred. Boxer cardiomyopathy BCM : An inherited condition causing an irregular heartbeat due to an electrical conduction disorder. It can result in weakness, collapse, or sudden death. Detection is challenging, leading to unexpected fatalities. Dogs showing signs of this condition should not be bred. While some dogs show signs of pain and lameness, others may not exhibit discomfort. X-ray screening helps detect hip dysplasia, and affected dogs should not be bred. Hypothyroidism : Caused by a deficiency of thyroid hormone, leading to infertility, obesity, mental dullness, and lack of energy. It can be managed with daily thyroid replacement pills. Corneal Dystrophy : Non-inflammatory eye diseases inherited in Boxers, affecting one or more corneal layers, causing opaque areas in the eyes. A weakened immune system can lead to demodectic mange, resulting in localized or generalized skin issues. Gastric dilatation-volvulus GDV , also called Bloat or Torsion : A life-threatening condition more common in deep-chested dogs like Boxers. Feeding habits and exercise patterns can contribute to GDV. Immediate medical attention is crucial. Allergies : Boxers are prone to both environmental and food-related allergies. Itchy, scaly skin should be examined by a vet. Responsible breeding is essential to reduce the risk of deafness. Boxer Care Boxers are indoor dogs due to their short noses and coats, making them unsuitable for outdoor living. However, they enjoy playing in a fenced yard. Engage them in play or walk them twice daily for at least half an hour to keep their muscles toned and their energy satisfied. Activities like fetch, long walks, or dog sports like agility and flyball are great options. Adequate exercise ensures good behavior—a tired Boxer is a well-behaved Boxer. Training is crucial for Boxers, as their size and strength can inadvertently harm people. Their temperament, being happy and excitable, requires early and consistent training using firm, fair methods with positive reinforcement through praise, play, and food rewards. Be consistent to avoid pushing boundaries. Settle them down before training class with a walk or play session for better focus. Housetraining requires patience; some Boxers are trained by four months, while others take longer. Regular potty breaks and praising them outdoors are essential. Crate training is recommended for their successful training. Boxer Feeding For an ideal Boxer diet , choose high-quality food suited for medium-sized breeds with high energy. Optimize their chances for a long, healthy life by providing proper nutrition. To prevent weight gain, adhere to a regular feeding schedule with two meals per day. Limit treats and avoid leaving food out all day. Consult your vet for personalized recommendations based on factors like weight, energy levels, and overall health. Boxer Coat Color And Grooming Boxers boast a sleek, short coat with tight skin, accentuating their athletic bodies. They come in fawn or brindle colors, occasionally with white markings. Fawn ranges from light tan to mahogany, while brindle displays striking black stripes on a fawn background. White markings should not cover more than one-third of the coat, and excessive white is discouraged due to potential health issues like skin cancer and deafness. They lack the gene for a solid black coat, so black Boxers are not seen. Bathing should be done as needed. Maintaining dental hygiene and nail care are essential. Regularly brushing their teeth prevents periodontal disease, and trimming nails every few weeks keeps their feet in good condition. Starting grooming routines early in puppyhood helps them become accustomed to the process, ensuring positive veterinary exams and handling as adults. Regular grooming also provides an opportunity to check for any potential health issues, such as sores, rashes, or signs of infection, promoting early detection and care. Boxer Children And Other Pets Boxers are fond of kids and make excellent playmates for active older children. However, their rambunctious nature may be too much for toddlers, possibly causing accidental knocks during play. Never leave a dog unsupervised with a child. With proper socialization, Boxers can also get along well with other dogs and cats, particularly if raised together. Boxer Rescue Groups Boxers are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Boxers in need of adoption and or fostering. There are a number of rescues that we have not listed. Many can be found with a quick internet search. Back to Top Boxer Temperament With their muscular physique and dark eyes, Boxers might seem tough and serious. You can often catch them sitting with their rear legs out in front of them like people and rolling back into a lazy dog position. Often described as being more human than dog, Boxers are known to be quite sensitive. Sad puppy dog eyes warning! Boxers perform brilliantly as guard dogs and service, assistance and therapy dogs and in roles such as drug detection and search-and-rescue. But that protective nature can work against them, too. Back to Top How to Care for a Boxer Exuberant, playful and sensitive, Boxers require a good deal of exercise and training. But the extra effort is worth it thanks to their good nature and charming personalities. Brushing your Boxer a few times a week using a rubber curry brush or a hound glove can help keep shedding in check and keep the coat healthy and tight to the skin. Speaking of brushing, brush their teeth daily to prevent tartar buildup and dental disease. Get the how-to here. Unless they get really dirty, Boxers only need to be bathed once a month. Training Training is a great way to provide physical activity and mental stimulation, which are especially important for Boxers. So, a Boxer puppy will benefit greatly from early socialization and dog training classes. The good news is Boxer dogs are highly trainable due to their intelligence and excellent problem-solving skills. Canine sports like obedience, agility and herding are all great options for burning off that Boxer energy. Interactive toys , puzzle games and scent work which teaches a dog to identify and track various odors also can keep Boxers mentally stimulated throughout their life. To determine if a dog food is complete and balanced, look on the package for a statement that says it meets nutritional standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials AAFCO. Boxers are prone to heart issues. More on that below. At around 6 or 7 years old, they may need to transition to a senior diet to help manage their weight, which can become an issue later in life. Be sure to speak to your veterinarian as they can help you choose the best food for your dog based on their activity level, weight, age and unique needs. Treats can be an effective training aid, but giving too many can cause obesity. And of course, your Boxer should always have access to clean, fresh water. Well-trained Boxers make great running companions for short, brisk runs when the weather is moderate. Boxers also love to play fetch. Growing Boxer puppies should be exercised less than adults. Ideal Environment Boxers need room to roam, so apartments may not be ideal. A house with a big yard for activity and exercise would be best, but living in an area where long walks are possible will also suffice. Ulcers: Eye ulcers are a common condition in Boxers. Signs are extreme tearing, squinting and redness. If you suspect your Boxer has an eye ulcer, take them to a vet who can diagnose and treat it. Degenerative Myelopathy: This incurable spinal condition spreads through the central nervous system and can leave a Boxer unable to walk when they get older. Dragging the hind legs is often the first sign dog parents notice. A doggy wheelchair can help improve mobility and quality of life. Hip Dysplasia: Boxers have a predisposition to this skeletal condition in one or both hip joints. If your Boxer has trouble getting up from sitting or navigating stairs, it can be an indication of the disease. A veterinarian can diagnose hip dysplasia with an examination and X-ray. Treatment varies depending on the severity, and may include physical therapy or surgery. In mild cases, the dog may not need treatment. In moderate to severe instances, medication may be needed. Most often, exercise is limited in Boxers with this condition. Cancer: Unfortunately, Boxers are prone to several different cancers, including hemangiosarcoma and lymphosarcoma, as well as tumors. Allergies: Just like in humans, seasonal allergies affect dogs, and the Boxer is no exception. Baths, air filters in the home, and avoiding walks during times of day when pollen counts in your area are highest can help ease Boxer dog allergies. Boxer underbite, when the upper jaw is shorter than it should be, can be common. If the upper incisors dig into the lower jaw, teeth will have to be extracted. Back to Top Boxer History The sleek Boxer we know today can be traced back to Medieval Germany—it was bred down from the larger German breed, the Bullenbeisser, or bull biter, whose forte was hunting ferocious game like bear and wild boar. A jack-of-all-trades, Boxers have been athletes, cattle dogs, police dogs, war dogs in both World Wars , watchdogs, protection dogs and guide dogs for the blind. You can also reach out to a Boxer rescue organization to adopt a Boxer or keep an eye out for the breed at your local animal shelter. FAQs Are Boxer dogs hypoallergenic? No, Boxers are not considered hypoallergenic. Even though their coat is short, they do shed. The good news is they require little grooming. Are Boxers dangerous dogs? Boxers are not considered an aggressive dog breed, but they can be dangerous without proper training because of their size and power. Obedience training early on is important to channel their energy in positive ways. Do boxers drool? Since Boxers have drooping jowls, they produce large quantities of saliva and, yes, they do drool. What are the most popular Boxer dog names? For more dog name ideas, here are our suggestions for the top dog names. What are the most common boxer mixes? The most common Boxer dog mixes are: Boxer-Pitbull mix Bullboxer. They have a great sense of humor and are quite cuddly, considering their stocky selves to be right at home on your lap—even when they reach up to 80 pounds! They love their people, they love to please, and are extremely intelligent and loyal," says breeder Marc Hatten, owner of Mountain Crest Boxers in Huson, Mont. Boxers have a short, glossy coat —usually a fawn, brindle, or white color —that's soft to the touch, often with flecks of white across the chest, face, and paws. His square head is a unique feature, lifted high above a strong back and tapered hindquarters. Most boxers have broad, black faces, also known as masks. Their ears create a floppy frame around their masks, although some dog owners have traditionally cropped the ears so they stand up. Though this is controversial; according to the American Veterinary Medical Association , cropping is almost always done for cosmetic reasons and has no proven health benefits. Don't let the downward frown of the jowls fool you—they're happy dogs! Because boxers weigh between 50—80 pounds and top off at nearly 2 feet high at the shoulder, they're considered medium- to large-sized dogs. Temperament While your boxer is a puppy, introduce him to as many adults, children, and other pets as you can so he develops strong connections and learns good manners. Boxers can be suspicious around new people and animals, so the earlier they interact with other pets and families at a dog park or in the neighborhood, the better. A boxer dog's temperament is naturally friendly and fun without being overly jumpy, barky, or excitable—once they graduate from their awkward puppy phase, that is! They reach full maturity in about three years, which is longer than other dog breeds. So positive reinforcement training is a must to help properly channel a young boxer's abundant energy. Fortunately, they're easy to train and eager to please, so they respond well to cues and leash training. Boxers dislike routine, so teaching them new tricks from time to time keeps their curious minds engaged. Hatten recommends two essential reasons for crate training boxer puppies : to curb undesirable habits caused by boredom and to provide a sense of security. This provides a safe retreat as he adjusts to new people and surroundings, also referred to as a "decompression period. Some experts recommend that the crate—with door open—be placed in an area where your new companion can easily see you and approach for reassurance whenever he needs to, reinforcing the new bond. Ask your veterinarian or a certified trainer for more tips to ease your boxer into the family. Living Needs Owning a boxer means you want a dog that can keep up with your lifestyle and be a true canine friend. They wouldn't be well-suited to an individual or family that couldn't provide these basic activities and socialization aspects. It's not unusual for boxers to need at least 30 minutes—or more—of exercise and dedicated play each day. Because of their dutiful personalities and intelligence, they've been trained to work in K9 units with police, as messengers during WWII, cattle wranglers, and guides for people with visual impairments. So with this type of energy and attention to detail, it's no wonder they thrive with people who are active in the great outdoors and enjoy running , hiking , camping , enjoying family outings in the park, working on farms, and exploring other environments that provide healthy engagement. American boxer dogs have lean, muscular bodies designed for movement and short, easy-care coats, so they're ready to go when you are. A mature boxer can also be a trusty and loyal companion for an apartment dweller or senior citizen who enjoys daily walks and has a fenced-in yard or accessible park area that allows for plenty of fetch time. Care Clean your boxer's teeth every day if possible to prevent tartar buildup. Fortunately, a specific doggie toothbrush and toothpaste makes this an easy task. Ask your veterinarian for tips. Sparkling teeth and healthy gums also help reduce drooling. Boxers don't drool as much as other breeds, but slobber can happen regularly depending on the size and shape of your dog's nose and jaw. Keep his coat sleek and shiny by brushing him a couple of times a week with a hound glove or rubber curry-brush. They don't shed a lot , but regular brushing helps control any fur that does fly. Because boxers are generally clean, they only need a bath about once a month, and that's a good time to trim their nails and clean their ears , too. Some boxer dogs have deeper facial folds than others, so you might need to wipe these clean with a damp washcloth, especially after a vigorous romp outside nosing through dirt. Health Because boxers have short coats, they often need sweaters or jackets to protect them in cold weather. They're also more sensitive to hot temperatures. They don't sweat , and their snub noses and fleshy mouths can't provide adequate cooling from panting like other dogs. So if it's warm out, time walks in the early morning or late evening when the sun isn't at its hottest. If you notice your boxer is a bit overheated , apply chilled water to his ears, belly, and genitals, where blood vessels are closer to the skin. Because they're so playful, they might also enjoy a quick cool down by frolicking in a small wading pool placed in a shady backyard spot. According to Upstate Veterinary Specialities , particular boxer health problems include cardiomyopathy—specifically, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy ARVC , which appears in some dogs 5—7 years old. This is a genetic disease that occurs in nearly 40 percent of boxers. The heart muscle is gradually replaced by fibrous, fatty tissue, and causes an irregular heartbeat. Symptoms of ARVC include fainting, shortness of breath, and difficulty exercising. Unfortunately, some dogs don't present any symptoms of ARVC at all, and may die suddenly because of it. According to the American Boxer Club ABC , other potential medical conditions include hip dysplasia , degenerative myelopathy—a progressive disease that affects the hindquarters and spinal cord— thyroid issues , and tumors. When you're looking for a boxer puppy, ask specific testing questions of your breeder. In the 19th century, German and Belgian breeders created bullenbeissers from other dogs of that line, including the mastiff and English bulldog , and used them as large game hunters and for cattle control. Further refinement of that breed revealed a sleeker type of dog—the boxer. Some canine historians believe the name boxer comes from a German reference for the bullenbeisser's role in slaughterhouses—boxl—while others say it describes how the dogs use their front paws in play. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the boxer breed in .A boxer named Sigurd was born in and sold to a California kennel when he was 5 years old, according to the ABC. He and his offspring were the first boxers in the U. Fun Facts American boxer dogs are known for their goofy personalities. They also have a special wiggle frequently referred to as a "kidney bean"—they curve into a semi-circle shape and spin around when really excited! Boxers are favorite companions of many famous folks. Actress Jennifer Aniston, who usually has at least two or three pooch pals, adopted a pit bull-boxer mix in named Sophie. Actress Jessica Biel, along with pop music sensation husband Justin Timberlake, have frequently been snapped by paparazzi while on walks with their boxers, Buckley and Brennan. Was this page helpful? Very real potential for health problems and a short lifespan A Boxer may not be right for you. Keep in mind that the inheritance of temperament is less predictable than the inheritance of physical traits such as size or shedding. Temperament and behavior are also shaped by raising and training. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you're getting, and plenty of adult Boxers have already proven themselves not to have negative characteristics. If you want a puppy, you can avoid some negative traits by choosing the right breeder and the right puppy. Unfortunately, you usually can't tell whether a puppy has inherited temperament or health problems until he grows up. More traits and characteristics of Boxer dogs If I was considering a Boxer, I would be most concerned about.Health problems. Most Boxers, unfortunately, do not live a long life. This is partly due to unwise breeding practices such as inbreeding and linebreeding, which are more likely to pass along defective genes. It's also partly due to the deformities in their structure, especially their shortened face. An alarming number of Boxers die of cancer or heart disease in middle age. Other health concerns include eye diseases such as corneal ulcers , digestive diseases such as ulcerative colitis , hypothyroidism, itchy allergies, skin tumors, and more. Prospective Boxer owners should be aware that they might be taking on expensive health problems over their dog's lifetime. Read more about Boxer Health. Boxer sounds. Boxers are not quiet dogs. Now I don't mean they're yappy! Not at all. But they do vocalize with grumbles and grunts which owners find endearing and also snorts, snuffles, and snores which bother some people. Only you know whether you're one of those people. Gassiness flatulence. All short-faced breeds gulp air when they eat, and that air has to go somewhere, after all. However, commercial diets make flatulence worse by including fibrous or hard-to-digest ingredients. Boxers who are fed a homemade diet of real meat and vegetables have much less trouble with gassiness. Many Boxers, especially those with loose lips, slobber or drool, especially after eating and drinking. You seldom see Boxers in obedience competition. They have an independent mind of their own and are not pushovers to raise and train. Many Boxers are passively stubborn and will brace their legs and refuse to do what you want them to do. Some want to be the boss and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show your Boxer, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say. Read more about Boxer Training. Older Boxers can be quite mellow, but most young Boxers up to about two years old romp and jump and play with vigor, and things can go flying, including small children or infirm people. Potential dog aggression. Most Boxers are fine with other family pets, including the family cat. But many Boxers are dominant or aggressive toward strange dogs of the same sex, and a few Boxers view cats as prey. Some Goldendoodles sleeping more than others may just lack opportunities for physical and mental stimulation. One way to get your dog more mental stimulation is to do fun training exercises like the ones in the Brain Training for Dogs program! As Goldendoodles enter their twilight years, they tend to sleep more hours on average. As their bodies slow down and deal with the effects of wear and tear through the years, senior dogs will require more rest throughout the day. Arthritis, hip dysplasia , cognitive dysfunction, and other age-related health issues that affect senior Goldendoodles can cause them to revert to the sleeping habits that they had while a puppy. They will nap on and off throughout the day. Some can sleep for a total of hours per day. Senior Goldendoodles tend to sleep more because they tire out more easily. Also, bigger dogs spend more time dozing compared to their smaller counterparts. When it comes to knowing the right Goldendoodle sleep schedule, experts generally point out that the bathroom habits of dogs are the most important consideration. When and how frequently your Goldendoodle relieves themself can affect their sleep schedule. Photo courtesy of lucyythedoodle on Instagram. When dogs were domesticated, many slept with their masters. Lying close together created stronger bonds between dogs and their owners. It was also a way to keep warm as the heat of their bodies combined. As social creatures, Goldendoodles love being around their humans even when sleeping. However, there are pros and cons related to co-sleeping with your Goldendoodle. Pros: Gives both dog and human a sense of safety, security, and comfort. Increases the amount of quality time spent with your dog. Eases anxiety. Health concerns of humans can be aggravated. A common example is experiencing allergies. Dogs carry dust, dander, and other pathogens. Risk of disease and parasite transmission from dog to human and vice versa. The difference between a dog and human sleep cycles can significantly affect the quality of sleep for both humans and their canine buddies. As you might have gathered, a Goldendoodle sleeping a lot is not usually a cause for concern. Even when they are in deep sleep, their protective instincts are always on high alert thus even the slightest sound could easily wake them up. However, these should return to normal with time. Excessive sleep can be a red flag for serious health issues such as diabetes , hearing loss, hypothyroidism, or canine depression to name a few. Mental well-being and age causing lethargy in a Goldendoodle Boredom, depression, and old age can cause a lethargic state in a Goldendoodle. Even if you are exercising your Goldendoodle for the usual amount of time, there are things you may be overlooking. A dog with a zest for life like a Goldendoodle needs to be mentally enriched and stimulated. Treat traps, puzzles, or frozen Kongs are great ways to mentally enrich your dog. Check out our ultimate list of 35 indoor dog games and activities to prevent your dog from becoming bored. Depression in dogs is a common cause of rapid onset lethargic behaviour. Depression in dogs can hit any breed, even the effervescent and happy Goldendoodle. The two most common causes of dog depression are both related to change. The loss of a companion dog or loss of an owner are commonly seen triggers for dog depression. Age will slow down every dog — eventually. The changes to the energy level of a Goldendoodle as it ages should be gradual though. What a staggering statistic! Carrying extra pounds kilograms has an effect on your dogs health. Both the physical and mental strain of being overweight can tire a dog and make them not want to bother with normal activities. The vast majority of pet weight issues are caused by overfeeding. If you are concerned that the size of your dog might be causing lethargy, modify the diet to fit the nutritional requirements of the size of dog you have. A Teacup Goldendoodle will of course require less food than a full size standard Goldendoodle. If you have two dogs with different nutritional requirements, meal time can see the smaller dog eating more than its share. Monitor your Goldendoodle to make sure they are only eating what is appropriate. Teacup Goldendoodles are a miniature size petite dog. They can be easily carried around even as full grown Teacup Goldendoodles. Anaemia Causing Lethargy for Goldendoodles An illness that causes the number of red blood cells to reduce can cause anaemia. If your Goldendoodle is experiencing lethargy, they might be anaemic. Tiredness after exercise and a general reduction in enthusiasm to exert are common traits of an anaemic dog. If there is an illness or condition, some simple tests at your veterinarian will pick up on this. Do not commence supplementation without Vet guidance, this is extremely dangerous for dogs. Medications or Poisons Causing Lethargy Adverse reaction to a new medication can cause the same effects as a poison. If you have started your dog on new tablets, treatments or supplements and notice a lethargic change — call your Vet. Immediate action is taken. Poison stle reactions can result in permanent damage to dog organs! Dogs love to eat… pretty much everything. If your Goldendoodle has eaten something dangerous, it could experience a degree of poisoning. Dogs can eat some human foods like carrots or capsiscum, but grapes, chocolate, crackers or coffee can give trouble. Even a brief exposure of some chemicals can result in a very sick dog. A common cause for an active breed like the Goldendoodle that loves exercising and swimming is pool or garden chemicals. As always, call your vet if you suspect this serious exposure is a cause of your Goldendoodle. Be on the lookout for tell tale signs like excessive drooling or vomiting. How to tell what type of coat a Goldendoodle will have. More dog videos on our Oodle Life YouTube channel. Infection can also present with lethargy An infection of any size in a Goldendoodle can present with some degree of tiredness or lethargy. Check for temperature, drooling, diarrhea, vomiting and dizziness as other signs of infection. Just like humans, a Goldendoodle with an infection will need treatment by a qualified professional. Left alone, infection can get worse and permanently damage the dog. How do you treat a Goldendoodle with lethargy? If your dog is truly lethargic and not just tired or lazy, there will be a cause. If the cause is simple then some behaviour or diet modification can do the trick and perk up your pooch. If your dog is not eating , or not responding to commands, then the cause is serious and priority steps need to be taken to seek medical care. For many lethargic dogs the cause will be boredom or diet related. Carefully consider the amount of exercise both physical and mental your dog gets daily. A Goldendoodle will require up to 60 minutes of exercise every day. Both English Goldendoodles and American Goldendoodles have this high energy burn requirement. You Goldendoodle also needs mental enrichment. The Muffin Tin game is an easy game to play at home with your dog. Keep them mentally stimulated to prevent boredom. Also consider the diet of your Goldendoodle An overweight or undernourished Goldendoodle may present with lethargy. Consider a simple balanced approach to Goldendoodle diet from puppy to adulthood. Diet is a key factor that determines how long a Goldendoodle lives for. Consider natural low calorie snack alternatives and the total volume of snacks your Goldendoodle gets daily. For other causes of lethargy you will likely need to see your Vet as prolonged lethargy will only result in issues. Even simple pain and discomfort from indigestion or a minor paw injury or irritation may result in lethargy. Paw injuries in Goldendoodles often present as licking or chewing of the paw. Lethargy in Goldendoodles Conclusion True lethargy is Goldendoodles needs an explanation. A very tired dog might need an extra sleep — but the exuberant personality of your Goldendoodle needs to return. Any extended period of laziness that is out of character needs to be remedied. If in doubt, check with your Veterinarian because this early warning sign may be an amazing blessing to prevent an issue from getting worse. For more Goldendoodle information check out. Goldendoodles, in their first weeks of life, will sleep anytime they are not nursing. As newborns, they tend to nurse every 2 hours taking naps in between feeds. Even so, they shut their eyes as they nurse, so essentially, they sleep all through. As they grow, they start being more active during the day. Goldendoodle puppies will stay awake for about 2 to 4 hours from 3 weeks of age. For example, they will play and explore for a few minutes, sleep for a few hours, play again, sleep, and the cycle continues. From two months of age, Goldendoodle puppies will sleep for 18 to 20 hours a day. They will have about 4 to 6 hours of active time during the day, whereby they will play and explore in short spurts. Like other puppies, Goldendoodle puppies need a lot of time to rest and recharge from short playtimes. They tend to sleep longer stretches at night, but they get up to have potty breaks and stretches. In the earlier months, your Goldendoodle puppy may wake up more than once for potty breaks, but with consistent training, they will sleep through the night before they hit five months. Older puppies between 6 and 12 months will sleep an average of 15 hours a day. They tend to have more energy to expend at this stage, spending more time playing and exploring. On this note, they will sleep longer stretches of up to 9 hours at night with short naps during the day. Since Goldendoodle puppies are energetic, they use up all their energy during the day playing and interacting. But, they tend to nap multiple times to recharge between sessions and reenergize for their next play session. An adult Goldendoodle will sleep for 14 hours on average, but the hours increase as they age. A study by the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found out that middle-aged and older dogs sleep more during the day than puppies. Middle-aged dogs and older dogs tend to take more naps during the day as their energy levels drop significantly as they grow older. That means they need more rest than younger ones to recharge and pump up for playtimes. Even so, Goldendoodles tend to be more energetic than most other dogs; therefore, they may sleep fewer hours. But, how much they sleep depends on several factors varying from dog to dog and from household to the other. Your dog will have a hard time falling asleep. According to a Journal of Veterinary Behavior study, dogs that were fed more frequently took fewer naps during the day, but those naps lasted longer. Dogs fed twice a day slept earlier at night but woke up earlier, showing a decreased total time at night. This study shows that a higher frequency in feeding affects the length of naps and, ultimately, sleep quality. If your Goldendoodle is going through a mental or emotional issue, it may have difficulty trying to sleep. This is why it is essential to engage your dogs mentally, as much as you do physically. Ensuring your dog is mentally stimulated will help it settle down quickly, rest more and sleep better. Your dog needs emotional support to help it cope with everything around the home. Your dog requires adequate love and affection, which contributes significantly to how well it settles down and rests. If your dog does not get adequate training each day, it may have a hard time trying to sleep. Exercising helps to expend built-up energy in dogs to help them calm down and rest more. It is important to note that if your dog has physical issues or complications, it may not sleep as effectively as a healthy dog. However, this can go the other way round, and your dog may need to sleep more than usual, owing to its physical incapabilities. Puppies and dogs in their first few years may need to sleep more than adult, active dogs. On the same note, senior dogs may need more sleep as their energy levels drop significantly as they age. The Environment The environment your Goldendoodle stays in can make or break its sleep pattern. If your home is noisy and full of distractions, your dog may find it hard to sleep and rest comfortably. This can highly affect how long your dog sleeps and how much time your dog needs to fall asleep. You ought to create a healthy lifestyle for your dog by ensuring your dog eats a healthy diet. Provide healthy food and clean water throughout the day to ensure your dog gets all its essential nutrients. Additionally, ensure your dog gets adequate exercise every day, essential for expending energy and mental stimulation. With regular exercise, your dog will have an easier time settling down and falling asleep. Stay on top of their health needs by scheduling regular visits to the vet and engaging them often to meet their emotional needs. How long your Goldendoodle holds their bladder depends on their age. Younger Goldendoodles below six months of age can hold their bladder for 1 to 3 hours. Puppies older than six months can hold their bladder for up to 6 hours. Goldendoodles above two years can hold their bladder between 6 to 8 hours, while those above seven years can hold between 4 to 6 hours. As they grow older, the time reduces significantly, going as little as 2 hours for dogs between 11 to 12 years. Goldendoodles love to be close to their family members and enjoy cuddling. They like sleeping in your bed or in your room at night to keep the connection going. Goldendoodles thrive on bond and will appreciate the extra time with you sleeping in your bed or next to you. Can Goldendoodles Sleep Outside? It is not advisable to leave your dog to sleep outside. They are generally indoor dogs and do not adapt well to temperature changes that happen at night. Additionally, the coat is not suited for the outdoors. The best approach is setting up a comfortable dog bed inside the house. Goldendoodles love cozy spaces, and setting up one for yours will significantly impact the quality of sleep. With a comfy dog bed indoors, your Goldendoodle will have an easier time falling asleep. Why Do Goldendoodles Sleep On Their Backs Goldendoodles like to sleep on their backs as a way to help them breathe better as they sleep. Sleeping on the back can also be an indication of your dog feeling hot while they sleep. Exposing their belly helps to regulate body temperature considering the belly has most of their sweat glands. Although the amount and quality of sleep vary according to age and health, most Goldendoodles sleep ab average of 12 to 14 hours. There might be days or even weeks when it seems to regress, but as long as you stay calm and stick to the training schedule and daily routine, your doodle puppy will thrive. Remember, the younger your pup is, the shorter its attention span and the less it understands. A lot of the earliest work involves planting seeds for the future and maintaining that consistent routine. Many goldendoodles respond best to one or more of the following methods: Positive Reinforcement Your number one tool as a puppy parent is positive reinforcement. Scolding and punishment will make it fear you, which might garner very short-term results but will ultimately lead to long-term problems like destructive behavior, biting and excessive barking. Use a mixture of praise and toys as your primary rewards, with food used as big rewards and treats very occasionally. Clicker Training Many puppies respond best to clicker training, and many professionals use it. It combines positive reinforcement with a handheld clicker that you press whenever you reward your pet for following a command or behaving well. Very quickly, it starts associating the click with a reward, until the clicker itself becomes the reward and a treat is no longer required. Animals are territorial by nature, and giving your pup a little island of its own in your home is a great way to prevent unwanted behaviors. Remember, the crate is not a punishment. However, like every breed, they have their character quirks. Below is a list of the main issues doodle owners encounter and how to approach them. Jumping All dogs have the potential to get excited and jump up on people when they meet or greet them, but this can be scary for strangers and children. Teach your doodle puppy that it only gets a reward if it sits when greeted and this behavior will eventually become second nature. Stealing Food Every dog loves to eat. A clicker can be particularly good for this behavior. Mouthing and Biting Biting is natural for dogs, and they might use it as a way to get your attention in addition to it being a sign of aggression. Check out our training program to find out more. On average, Goldendoodle puppies can hold their bladder for their age in months plus one. Bladder size also varies by puppy. A Standard Goldendoodle puppy may be able to hold their bladder longer than a Mini, Petite, or Toy Goldendoodle puppy as they get older and bigger. Of course, bladder size is only part of the puzzle. Your puppy started off life on a hour clock, waking up to eat every once in a while, regardless of the time of day. Medium and large breed dogs, on the other hand, have larger bladders and can hold their pee for longer periods. House training is usually easier for these dogs. A regular sleep schedule is the best way to eliminate sleepless nights and help your puppy settle down quickly. A bedtime routine helps the puppies wind down and prepares them for sleep. This routine can include a bathroom break, chew toy, and white noise machine to help them fall asleep faster. A good bedtime routine for most puppies may look a lot like it would for human babies. Puppies need more sleep than adult dogs, and the amount of sleep they require varies depending on their eventual size. Some puppies may whine or bark excessively when left alone, making it difficult for them to sleep. This can be harder for to do with smaller dogs since you might want to cuddle them to sleep. Keep in mind the difference between small, medium, and large breed dogs when training a puppy to sleep through the night. Bladder size, mental stimulation needs, and sleep requirements all vary by eventual size. Tips for Helping Your Goldendoodle Puppy Learn to Sleep Through the Night As your Goldendoodle and their tiny bladder grows, there are a lot of things you can do to set them up to start learning how to sleep through the night. Cover the dog crate to help make it dark and quiet. That will help resemble the type of den where puppies sleep in the wild to stay safe while they sleep. Just make sure your puppy is still getting airflow, even when the crate is covered. Play and go for a walk early in the evening to wear your puppy out. Expend puppy energy before bed! Feed dinner a couple of hours before bedtime. Dinner time should be about hours before bedtime. Go potty right before bed. That will buy you the most amount of time before your Goldendoodle puppy needs to go out again. Establish a routine so your puppy learns the steps that happen leading up to bedtime. Make sure your room is dark and quiet. You want to optimize the situation to make it easier for your puppy to sleep without distractions. To make your puppy feel secure, make sure nighttime sleep is peaceful. Growing takes a lot of energy too, so they need to sleep and conserve some energy for the proper development of their immune system, central nervous system, brain, and muscles. Whether you are raising a Goldendoodle pup or any other breed of dog, this guide will help you and your new pet establish good sleeping habits early on. Here are some tips to help your puppy nap throughout the day: Recognize overtired behavior. When your Goldendoodle puppy is clearly ready for a nap but would rather play, take them to their crate, bed, or another sleeping place. Signs may include bad behavior or trying to cuddle. Nodding their head is a red flag too. Show them where to sleep. Follow a schedule. Plan naps into the day, like after walks and playtime. Goldendoodle puppies may need to nap every hour or so. Naps may range from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Take them outside when they wake up. Take them out to go potty as soon as they wake up to help prevent accidents. Tips for Bedtime Bedtime can be tough for the whole family, especially the first few nights with your new Goldendoodle puppy. But establishing a Goldendoodle puppy schedule will help ensure they are sleepy for bedtime and can sleep all through the night over time, with a lot of patience. Here are some tips to help your puppy and you sleep better at night: Start a routine. Make the crate inviting. Crate training is a crucial part of having puppy Golden Doodles, and it needs to start from the very first night home. Instead of an expensive dog bed that will probably get chewed up, line the bottom of the crate with cheap towels or fleece blankets. Keeping the crate inside your bedroom is best, so you can hear them whining, at least while your puppy is new and has a tiny bladder. Keep their sleeping area dark and quiet. A cover on the crate can help keep light out. If you watch TV in bed and have the puppy in your room, keep the volume low. You want ideal conditions to help your puppy fall — and stay — asleep. Be prepared to wake up. This is normal, and your puppy will eventually grow big enough to sleep through the night without a potty break. The first few nights may be difficult. Your Goldendoodle puppy may cry, whine, and bark to get out of the crate and join you in bed. Goldendoodle Puppy Sleep Schedule Obviously, you will develop a routine that works best for you, your family, and your Goldendoodle puppy. Give them breakfast. Take them outside to go potty right after eating. Spend minutes playing, walking, or socializing your Goldendoodle puppy. Time for a nap. Take your puppy outside as soon as they wake up. Time for another potty break when your puppy finishes eating their lunch. Up to an hour of playtime and exploring. Another potty break as soon as the puppy wakes up. More playtime. Your puppy may need another nap, then another potty break. Evening Dinner time. Make sure to feed your puppy dinner several hours before bed. After dinner, it is an excellent time for a long walk. One last potty break, then time for bed. When Should I Worry? Sometimes, lethargy can be a symptom that something is wrong. If your Goldendoodle puppy displays any other signs alongside sleeping excessively, you should call the vet right away. Puppies can get very sick, very fast. Be on the lookout for any of these symptoms: Vomiting. By: Author Jennifer Seegmiller What is more adorable than a fluffy curly-haired Goldendoodle, well a fluffy curly-haired Goldendoodle that is sleeping of course! Goldendoodle Adults Your adult Goldendoodle will normally sleep around hours in a 24hr period, but more as he ages. In this study, researchers found that older and middle-aged dogs slept more during the day than young adult dogs. This was because they took more naps, not because their naps were longer. They tend to run out of energy and need to rest more often than the younger group. Older and middle-aged dogs also slept more at night than younger dogs because they had long stretches of sleep at night waking up later and woke up fewer times during the night. When I asked Goldendoodle owners what their Goldendoodles behavior was like they covered all the ranges of this hr span. A big factor was how active and attentive the owners were. Goldendoodles tend to be pretty high energy and love to be kept busy with games and exercise. Because they may have a bit more energy than other breeds, they may sleep a little less than other breeds as well. Some owners I talked to said that if their Goldendoodles are left home alone all day they tend to just sleep since there is no one there to engage them with play or give them a reason to exercise. You can try and help with this by taking them out right before bed and limiting their water intake just before bed as well. Can Goldendoodles Sleep Outside? Similar to human babies when puppies are teething or going through growth spurts it could cause them to wake up at night or have difficulties sleeping. This routine can include using the restroom, bringing the noise level down, dimming the light, creating a relaxing and calm atmosphere. Give them plenty of exercise: Since Goldendoodles were originally bred from Retrievers and Poodles whose origins come from being hunting dogs they are very intelligent and have an internal desire to work. Goldendoodles need plenty of stimulation and exercise each day. Two hours a day for a high-energy Goldendoodle should be the minimum. The best time for a good exercise session is about 2 hours before bedtime. Try to include high cardio exercise as well and engaging brain activities so that your Goldendoodle will be both physically tired as well as mentally tired. If your dog sleeps in his own bed, or in a crate, having something that smells like you and a small stuffed animal to snuggle with can help him feel more safe and secure. This is especially true for puppies. Try changing meal times or limiting food and water: Take up their water after a certain time of the evening. If your Goldendoodle seems to need a bathroom break in the middle of the night all the time you can try changing his meal time to be a few hours earlier so he will get the poop out before bed or a few hours later so he can hold it until tomorrow. All puppies start out so small and cute that it can be difficult to imagine how big your puppy will be when he is fully grown. Thankfully there are ways for you to determine how large your dog will be as an adult. The first is to use a Labradoodle puppy growth chart. This works based on averages to see where your pup is now compared to where he will be fully grown. Another way to work out how big your puppy will be is to look at his parents, if you have access. Paws that look oversized on a small puppy means that you are going to have a large dog as they are going to have to grow a lot to fill out their paws. Finally, you can use a DNA test to see what the breed makeup of your pup is and get an idea of how big he can get. When a puppy is born, his eyes will be shut. He will open them within the first couple of weeks, but will stay by his mother the entire time. At 3 weeks, your Labradoodle will still be very small and rely on his mother for nutrition. Puppies tend to begin to move around at this point, gradually exploring their world. At 12 weeks, you will have a much bigger puppy looking for trouble. Your puppy will begin to lose his teeth. If you have a larger Labradoodle you will see a high rate of growth still at this point. If you have a smaller Labradoodle, you will see a slowdown in growth during this time period. Puppies get into a lot of trouble chewing at this age as well as they combat their teething. Most Labradoodles still have some growing to do, so will not be finished growing at this point, but the speed at which they are growing will definitely slow down. Food-wise, this is a good time to drop your dog down to only two meals a day but keep him on puppy food until his first birthday. Use the Labradoodle growth chart as a guide to see when your puppy will likely reach his final height. At 12 months old, you can transition your puppy from kibble to regular dog food. Even if there is still a little bit of growing to do, puppy food is much higher in calories. Adult Labradoodles should be done growing by their first birthday, regardless of the type of Labradoodle that they are. If you have a larger Labradoodle, you should not see any more gains in height, but you will continue to see some weight gain for a while yet. Some dogs are done gaining weight at 12 months, while others may take 18 or even 24 months. Factors That Affect Labradoodle Puppy Growth Genetics Genetics is the key factor in all breeds of dog as far as what affects their growth, but Labradoodles are especially affected by this. It is because the Poodle mix in their breed can come in so many different sizes. Labrador Retrievers are more consistent and predictable, but Poodles are not. Looking at what size of Poodle has been bred with the Lab will help you know how big your pup will get and how quickly that will happen. A Labradoodle is more likely to fall in between his parents in size, since he is a mixed breed, making genetics the biggest indicator you have. Most puppies will be well taken care of, naturally, but sadly that is not always the case. Puppies who live on the street or who are neglected by their owners will not receive the proper nutrients that they need to grow healthy and strong. In this case, the growth defects are likely internal and will not appear until your dog ages. Puppies need exercise to stay fit and healthy, but a puppy that is overexerted will have too much strain put on his body and he will not grow as well as a puppy who was allowed rest. Also, puppies that are sickly cannot grow as much as healthy dogs, because their bodies are working hard on their health, leaving growth on the backburner. It has long been the standard to spay or neuter your puppy as soon as possible. It usually happens at the 6-month mark, in order to ensure that they are large enough to withstand the anaesthesia and not so mature that they have reached sexual maturity. The purpose of this was to stop a female pup from going into heat and having an unwanted pregnancy or to stop a male from reproducing. Puppies that mate too young also have their growth at risk, so the idea was to save them in the long run. Unfortunately, there is new information that has come out in recent years. Studies have shown that dogs, especially larger breeds, which are spayed or neutered before they have finished growing are more likely to have joint issues when they are older. This is because altering their bodies during their growth will affect other parts of their bodies as well. The dogs do have a lot of similarities, but the Bernedoodle is a little bit larger than a Labradoodle is. Much of their size is based on the type of Poodle that has been mixed with the Labrador or the Bernese Mountain Dog, but in all of the cases, the Bernedoodles will be bigger, weighing as much as 90 pounds. What If My Labradoodle Is Not The Right Weight If you have been following your Labradoodle growth chart and you see that your pup is not growing at a consistent weight, you might be a little concerned. Since growth spurts can be unpredictable and you will not necessarily know when they happen, sometimes a puppy will stray off of his expected weight and size. The concern is when your puppy has completely fallen off of the growth curve, whether in being too large or too small. If it was a one-time occurrence, that is one thing, but if your puppy is simply not growing at the right pace, it is best to speak with your vet to make sure there is nothing else going on. You should be weighing your puppy routinely to get a good idea about how fast he has been going and these records will help your vet immensely. Feeding your Labradoodle puppy the right amount of food can be easy as long as you stick to a schedule. Given their curly fur, the regular visual check that you can do to monitor the size of other breeds is incredibly difficult. To know how much you need to feed your Labradoodle, you will need to focus on his age. Puppies between the age of 8 and 12 weeks need about 4 equal meals a day. Between 3 and 6 months, this can be reduced to 3 meals a day, dropping to 2 meals at 6 months. The quantity of food will depend on the type of food that it is as well as the type of Labradoodle that you have and his activity level. Take your pup in for regular weight checks with the vet and ask her what food recommendations she has. How To Choose A Labradoodle Size Since there are three different types of Labradoodles, you will need to choose which type of Labradoodle is right for you. The ultimate factor to help you decide is which size is right for you. A Standard Labradoodle is between 22 and 24 inches in height for males and between 21 and 23 inches for a female. Their weights range between 50 and 65 pounds. This is the biggest size. The medium Labradoodle is between 18 and 20 inches for a male and 17 and 19 inches for a female. They weigh between 30 and 45 pounds. The smallest Labradoodle is the mini Labradoodle that stands between 14 and 16 inches for either sex and weighs between 15 and 25 pounds. Weighing your Labradoodle puppy consistently is essential to his overall health. This can help you be certain that your puppy is growing as much and as quickly as he should be. Ideally, weighing your puppy twice a month will give you a good amount of data to go with. To weigh your puppy, you can weigh yourself while holding the puppy, note the weight. Then, weigh yourself again without the puppy. If your puppy is too large to hold, you should be able to take him into the vet to have a weight checkup. Labradoodle Genetics And Common Health Problems All dog breeds are more prone to certain genetic conditions than others. One of the most common genetic conditions that Labradoodles face is hip dysplasia. This happens as the dog ages and will result in mobility issues. Labradoodles can also suffer from epilepsy, but this can typically be controlled well with the right medicine. An eye condition that Labradoodles are at risk of is progressive retinal atrophy PRA , which can ultimately result in blindness. Your vet should be able to keep tabs on your pup and screen for these possibilities. If untreated, a dog can experience trouble with the kidneys and circulatory system. Even though a Labradoodle is a mixed breed, it runs the risk of genetic conditions of both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. Peter My name is Peter and I am a dog lover. Here are some factors that affect labradoodle puppy growth. Genetics No matter what breed of dog it is, genetics plays a very important role in the growth of a puppy. Labradoodles are a mix between Labrador Retriever and Poodle. These dogs share genetic traits from both parents. The size of a labradoodle depends on its Poodle parent. For example, if the Poodle parent is a toy or miniature, you will get a mini and medium-sized labradoodle. However, if the Poodle parent is standard size, you will get a standard-sized labradoodle. Nutrition Selecting a nutritious diet for your Labradoodle puppy is essential to his well-being and development. Giving him all of the nutrients he needs to flourish and grow. Puppies are in a period of rapid growth, so they require more nutrients for bone and joint development than adult dogs. Puppies who receive adequate nutrition grows to their full potential. When feeding your pup, make sure the food contains all essential nutrients as well as the right levels of fat and protein. Your veterinarian can advise you on the ideal food to provide them with. Physical Activity Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy. If not given enough exercise, they could develop health issues such as obesity, diabetes, or heart disease. When your puppy is young, it is best to limit their exercise as excessive physical activity can cause joint damage that will impact their development later in life. Walking and jogging are two activities that puppies enjoy doing, but these should only be done in small amounts in order to protect their joints. Health The growth of Labradoodle puppies also depends on their overall health. Labradoodles may suffer from health conditions that hinder their growth, such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. These conditions make it difficult for them to walk or lead an ordinary life. So, make sure you buy a Labradoodle puppy from a reputable breeder and screen them for any health issues. It is also advisable to take them for regular vet visits. Many new pet parents often wonder what size their Labradoodle will be when they grow up. For Labradoodle puppies, puppyhood lasts from birth until about five or six months old. During this stage, you will see a massive growth spurt in Labradoodles. They will keep growing until they reach adulthood. However, this may not always be the case; some may need additional pounds to gain before reaching this milestone. Conclusion A Labradoodle is a designer hybrid dog created by crossing two breeds — Poodles and Labrador Retrievers. As such, these dogs possess high energy levels, are friendly, and are highly affectionate. Some puppies stay much smaller than both parents, some become much bigger, and some are in the middle. While size is already hard to predict in purebred dogs, it becomes even more erratic when two breeds are crossed such as in any Doodle mix litter. Labradors are large dogs. They can have a heavy build with deep chests and a wide rib cage. Poodles on the other hand are rather dainty, even though they are tall. Especially in the first generation of a Labradoodle litter that means a generation whose parents are a purebred Poodle and a purebred Labrador , there will be a greater variation of size. The smallest and the tallest puppy of the litter might be as much as 20 pounds apart in weight! That being said, most Labradoodles weigh somewhere between 45 and 65 pounds and are inches tall. Because they are a mixed breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club and have no breed standard that requires a certain size. At what age is a Labradoodle fully grown? As a large dog breed, Labradoodles grow past their first birthday. The smaller a dog, the sooner he is finished growing. Some very small breeds can stop growing around months. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.

English Cream Golden Retrievers are no exception, experiencing a huge burst in popularity and demand. Also known as white Golden Retrievers and rare white European Retrievers, their coats are light cream or white color that is a stark contrast to the traditional yellow and red-gold coats. Duck and fowl hunting was a popular leisure activity for the wealthy and privileged, but the gun dogs back then were not great for both land and water. That posed an issue with hunters as Scotland is full of random marshes and bodies of water, which meant a hunter needed more than one gun dog. By crossing current types of gun dogs, Retrievers, and spaniels, Golden Retrievers were formed. Although the first real sighting of a white Golden Retriever is unknown, they most likely started showing up in litters around the s. Their natural athleticism and gentleness with handling fowl in their mouths shot them to popularity. To this day, Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds, though mostly as companion dogs than hunting dogs. In the United States, cream and white Goldens are not accepted and remain that way. Today, the only way to get a kennel-club accepted White Golden is to get a puppy from a litter of English-bloodline White Golden Retrievers. American Golden Retrievers with cream or white coats are not accepted anywhere, so make sure to ask the breeder about bloodlines. It may also be a red flag, as any experienced Golden breeder should know this. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! Week 7 — The great puppy escape artists! Week 8 — Our golden puppies head to their new homes. Have you ever had a litter of Golden Retriever puppies? It is unfortunate but true that puppy mills do exist and finding one can be extremely difficult as most will go out of their way to make it appear as if they are running a legitimate business. Healthy boxer pups grow into healthy boxers, so quality over quantity should always be the goal. This is not a sign of distrust but rather one of concern for both you and your new boxer pup. A good breeder will ask you what type of contract you would like before selling a puppy to you. By asking this question you can ensure that your boxer pup has never had ANY health problems such as Parvo or other issues that may become apparent in later life such as heart disease. Disposition and Temperament Boxers are happy, playful, curious, and energetic. So much so that many remain extremely fit and athletic into their old age. They are very intelligent, eager, quick to learn and known to be a good breed for competitive obedience. Boxers bond closely with their family and are loyal and affectionate. In fact, they are known to get along well with children. A properly socialized Boxer will get along with dogs and other household pets, such as cats, but small animals such as rodents or birds may be too tempting. Being energetic and playful, the Boxer can become boisterous and jump on people without proper training and leadership. Boxers need to go on a daily walk and get daily mental and physical exercise. Without it, they can become stressed out. You should start training your Boxer while it is a puppy: Boxers do best with dominant owners who can be firm, consistent and committed. You need to establish yourself as the leader of the pack with this dog breed. Owners who do not establish dominance often find their dogs to be stubborn or demanding which can hamper the owner-pet relationship. Living Conditions As for living arrangements, they can be fine in an apartment if sufficiently exercised even though they are active indoors, but Boxers really do best with an average-sized yard. They are also temperature sensitive, overheating easily and chilling quickly. Boxers have a natural tendency to protect their owners and home, and although visitors who the dog recognizes are not seen as a threat, will protect their owners if they sense danger. Boxers are courageous which makes them great watchdogs and will even restrain intruders. It is important to know Boxer puppies require human leadership and need to be taught not to be boisterous or jump up on people. It requires very little grooming. Brush it with a rubber curry brush once or twice a week to keep it looking good. The Boxer tends to be a clean breed only occasionally needing a bath. Origin The name Boxer is thought to come from the way they use their front paws for just about everything; pawing at its food bowls, toys, and even its owner in a playful way. The Boxer was developed in Germany in the 19th century and its ancestors were two German mastiff-type breeds. They were later bred with the ancestors of the Mastiff and Bulldog. Boxers were first used for dog-fighting, bull-baiting, cart pulling, cattle dogs, rounding up livestock, and to catch and pin wild boar and bison until hunters could arrive. Later they became popular theater and circus dogs. There are two types of Boxers: the German and the American Boxer. German Boxers have bigger heads and are generally more muscular than American Boxers. See store for details on a puppy. The American Canine Association, Inc. The American Canine Registry.

As little Benji is just about to visit my vet again, I thought I should send an update on how he is doing! He is growing up fast, although he is mainly fluff, as I expected him to be heavier! He's such a happy little guy who loves meeting new people and dogs, and has such a sweet temperament. He has been amazing with crate training, and actually loves hanging out in there see one of the pics. He has been loving all the snow we have been having, and his new obsession is with balls - he could play fetch for hours! He is such a sweetheart, who makes us smile every day! Thanks for bringing him to us! Your feedback is welcome; we are always ready to learn how to serve your needs best. We are proud to say that we have brought companionship, joy, and happiness to the lives of so many people. Jerry Flowers Thanks so much for helping us find Gus! We are dog people and have always had them in our lives, but even we were amazed at his fantastic demeanor. He is loving and well behaved and more than we had hoped for in a new family pet. He is happy to play when she wants to and to just sit and cuddle if that suits her as well. We are so glad we did our homework to find Classic Teacup Poodle Puppies. There is no comparison between your service and any other source we looked at. We were pleased with the process and happy to see he arrived just as planned with no stress from his journey. He is definitely not the last dog we will purchase from Classic Teacup Poodle Puppies. Many thanks! I have placed the order from the website, easy and clear process and since then was contacted by Daniel an agent from Classic Teacup Poodle Puppies. He was available all the time guiding me through the process. I am from Canada for those familiar with my country you would know that health and safety are quite strict here and with that Daniel was of great help in securing all the required health tests and vaccines. The day I went to the airport to receive Bridget was an unforgettable experience. She is a bundle of joy and as cute as she looked on the website. Thank you so much for this wonderful experience and for adding a new member to our family. Rita Adkins Thank you so much for bringing us, Diego! He is the sweetest, most cuddly puppy ever. Working with you guys was so easy, Daniel and Grace were there to answer every question we had. They managed to send Diego out a few days early to accommodate our schedules, and when he came off the plane he was happy as could be. He loves to snuggle and is so curious and excited about everything he sees. He has very good manners and is already pad trained. We love him very much and are so thankful for your help in receiving this precious little guy. Now, instead of having to rely on local shelters or breeders, people can easily browse online for puppies of all breeds and ages. These scams have become increasingly prevalent and sophisticated over time, with scammers using a range of tactics to deceive unsuspecting buyers. One of the most common tactics used by scammers is to steal photos of real dogs from reputable sites and use them to generate fake postings. In other cases, they may search for images of popular puppies from Facebook or Instagram and use those for their postings. Some scammers may even go as far as using a combination of stolen photos and false identities to create a listing that looks legitimate. The consequences of falling for an internet Poodle puppy scam can be significant. Victims can end up losing a substantial amount of money, and in some cases, their personal information may also be stolen. This can lead to a lot of emotional turmoil and distress, especially for those who were eagerly anticipating the arrival of their new pet. Always verify the legitimacy of a breeder or seller before making any payment or commitment. Make sure to look up reviews on websites other than the breeders website, check for a physical address and phone number, and ask for references or proof of previous successful adoptions.
