The eyes of all browns, dark or light, should be several shades darker than their coats and just as dark as it is possible to get them. Dark eyes are always surrounded by dark eye-rims, and the lips and nose are the same dark shade. One or two black crosses help to keep the eyes and pigmentation dark. A really dark-eyed brown is invaluable for the breeding of browns. In the lighter dilute shades, it is possible to get actual black eyes and correct pigmentation, which adds a hundred percent to the attractiveness of these charming colors. Jeff Smith Canzone Standard Poodles, Portland, Oregon Socialization When our puppies are about five weeks old, they are moved with their dam to the kitchen area at the center of our home. This is where many other dogs stay and play, and where many different people come to interact with them. All of our eight adult Poodles live in our home with us as part of our family. In addition, the puppies are exposed to many different home items vacuum cleaners, umbrellas, stereo music, food processors, sliding doors, etc. They are given a variety of objects and dog toys for their learning and fun throughout their development. And of course, they play with their litter mates much of their awake time. We keep our pups until they are nine weeks old so they have the very best start in their new, permanent homes. In addition to being well-socialized, the puppies are well fed and in good weight, veterinarian checked, vaccinated appropriate to age, and groomed. They are clean, healthy, and parasite free. The puppies have been introduced to crate, potty, and lead training, and they come with a health guarantee from genetic issues sometimes found in Poodles. My goal for breeding is to be able to show dogs that have great conformation, are well structured and that conform to the breed standards. I want highly versatile dogs that have pleasing temperaments and make excellent companions. I usually breed one litter a year, and careful planning is taken into consideration for every breeding. They were used quite frequently as retrievers when hunting, and the smallest breed, the Toy breed, was used for truffle hunting later in England. This breed also has been considered the national dog of France for quite some time. Contrary to popular belief, poodles are actually known for their extreme intelligence. They are very skillful in tracking, obedience, with agility sports, herding, and have an exceptional learning capability. Poodles remain well known for their abilities as excellent retrievers and are still used by hunters today in this role. Additionally, they come in a variety of colors, have moisture resistant coats, and come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. All sizes of the breed use the same standard for show and conformation, though we breed only the Standard Size. The poodle clip the way the coat is trimmed is actually an important cut used to protect their joints and vital organs in cold weather and when swimming. It was first developed by hunters to protect their retrievers when tracking out in the elements. It remains in use today and is actually part of the conformation standards when showing poodles.
