In Relax My Dog we are going to look at how you can train your Labrador to relax more frequently throughout the day. Labrador energy are high energy dogs Some young Labradors are quite difficult to live with simply because they never really switch off. An inherently calm temperament does help to create a relaxed dog. But a lot of the hyper and excitable behavior we see in well-exercised dogs is learned. In other words, the dog has found that restless and annoying behavior works for him in some way. All too often we inadvertently reward and encourage excitable and attention seeking behaviors in our Labradors. We spend a lot of time thinking about how to stop dogs being bad. And sometimes forget to notice when they are being good. When your dog has been driving you mad and pestering you all day, your understandable reaction to his temporary air of calm, is to tiptoe past and ignore him. We do this with kids too. Happily, you can teach yourself to reverse this approach. Put some fresh treats in it each morning, ready for the day ahead. Your job is simply to capture a moment in time when your dog is lost in his own world, totally at peace. He could be lying on his back in his zippy bed with a look of bliss on his face. Stretched out on his side in the sun in the back yard. Or snoozing by the fire whilst you watch TV in the evening. All behaviors that in the past you would ignore. Your dog may appear to be doing nothing, but this is still a behavior, something he has chosen to do. And all behavior can be encouraged and increased if you reinforce it using rewards. But if you find it impossible to do this without him leaping all over you, you can use a reward marker, so that your dog knows that he is being given the treat for relaxing. With a bit of practice, chilling out will soon become second nature If you forget to use the marker, just put the treat away. There will be another time. Say it quietly and calmly. And only when he is relaxed. The idea is to avoid getting him excited or worked up. Remember only use the reward marker if you really need to, and only when he is fully relaxed. Follow it as quickly as you can with the treat. And yes, when you first start this training, your unexpected generosity may have the opposite effect. You may feel as though your peace has been shattered — for now. But you need to be persistent. Ignore any silliness, and simply wait for the next time he relaxes, then try again. In the long run, overall, the more you reward him for relaxing, the more often your dog will relax. Relaxing in different places The ability to relax outside the home, even when there are interesting things going on around him can also be taught to your dog. You should start this training at home, then progress to park benches, outdoor cafes and so on. Just put your dog on the leash, sit in a chair with your book, and read while you wait for him to relax. Once he has given up on you and laid himself down, head on his paws, place a treat next to his face and go back to your book. Treat the dog at intervals, and after a few minutes more, get up and carry on with your walk, or whatever you want to do next. He will also be constantly in trouble for chewing things he should never have been able to reach. A Tiny Goldendoodle results from crossing a toy poodle with a mini goldendoodle. They range from 10 to 24 lbs and are about 12 to 17 inches at the shoulder. In terms of temperament, mini and tiny goldendoodles may have a slightly higher energy level than the standard. Since we use calm poodles in our breeding program, we tend to produce docile goldendoodles, regardless of size. Generations F1 is a first generation cross in which the puppy is 50 percent golden retriever and 50 percent poodle. The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents are unlikely to contribute genes for common inheritable diseases. F1b is a backcross in which a goldendoodle is bred with a poodle. Some breeders have backcrossed a goldendoodle with a golden, which results in a dog with more of the golden retriever traits. After filling out the application and being interviewed I was offered a dog by the name of Daisy, a beautiful red Golden Retriever. I thought I would never feel about another dog the way I felt about my Julie but it was not long before I fell in love with that sweet, sweet girl who was also with me for 13 years. Everyone loved Daisy, she would go up to people and do that lean into thing, a Golden thing, and they would just laugh and pet her. That is when I realized what an amazing organization, so full of caring and wonderful people who often go above and beyond for these wonderful animals. When my Daisy girl crossed over after a few months went by I thought it time to bring another friend home. Golden Retrievers had become hard to find so I decided to take a mixed breed home which was a big deal for me being the Golden Retriever lover that I am. I never had a male or a mixed breed before so I did not know what to expect. Finnie settled right in and is a wonderful companion and friend to furry sibling Gracie. Finnie took some training but I knew in time he would be a great dog and he is a great dog. He is very different than the other dogs in my life but he is so much fun to have with us. He loves people and gets very excited with everyone and will jump up in the air like an acrobat we are working on that , but a great dog. I would encourage everyone to think about a mixed breed. Below are some Mini Labradoodle pups that have been adopted. He is the size of a Labrador Retriever. He was at the shelter where he came in as a stray. They treated him there for an ear infection and some mild skin inflammation which he has long recovered from. We did notice cloudiness in both eyes and were diagnosed with cataracts. Surgery was done to remove them and has recovered well but will need 2 different eye drops for life. He can be very playful with other playful dogs and loves to play fetch, or, can cuddle up next to you just as well. Walks are his favorite activity. He is also good with calm, friendly smaller dogs. He has not been around cats. With children, he does better with 12 years and older. Leon becomes attached to his human and will follow them like a shadow. He can be a little stubborn and will growl and snap at times when disciplined or if bumped while sleeping. He has been adopted twice and returned for this reason. Once he is comfortable in his new home, he will do it less. He may have separation anxiety at 1st, but with time and patience, he gets over it. He does better with a furry companion.
