Share 0 Shares Possibly the most important thing to consider when choosing a Golden Retriever breeder is that they focus on the health, longevity, and temperament of their dogs. This means that they do not just care about what their dog looks like, but that they are also healthy and have a solid personality. In order to do this, all reputable Golden Retriever breeders will health test their dogs to ensure that their lines will be as genetically healthy as possible. According to the Golden Retriever Club of America, these health tests should at least include screening for hip and elbow problems and screening for a variety of eye conditions. Similarly, reputable Golden Retriever breeders will socialize their puppies from a young age to give them a good start in life and set them up for having a good temperament. Here are the top 7 Golden Retriever breeders in Maryland. Additionally, this breeder is also a proud member of the Golden Retriever Club of America. The main goal of these breeders is to bring healthy, happy, and good-natured Golden Retriever puppies into loving homes. To ensure that their dogs are genetically healthy, this breeder clears all of her dogs through health testing. Puppies are also kept up to date on their vaccinations and deworming, and they are also seen by a vet before going to their new homes. Puppies receive an extensive amount of socialization from an early age to ensure that they are ready to go to their new homes as well. Please note that this breeder requests that you fill out their puppy application form before making inquiries about puppies or putting a deposit down. From here you will need to wait for approval from the breeder and wait for the next steps. Name of Owner. As with any mixed breed, they can take on the traits of one of the parent breeds or any combination of both of them. With a Golden Retriever Mix, the goal is to get the highly-trainable, super-friendly, and sweet nature of the Golden Retriever and the best traits of the other dog in the cross. Because there can be variation in the puppies, you will want to ask the breeder about the other dog in the cross. This will give you an idea of what other traits you could be dealing with in a Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A Golden Retriever is known as the quintessential friendly dog with a happy-go-lucky personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They also tend to be good with strangers as they are more interested in making friends. The other dog breed in the cross could provide some other traits and variations to this, but your Golden Retriever Mix puppy should have a similar disposition to the Golden Retriever. Golden Retriever Mixes tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in larger homes with room to run and can adapt well to apartment living. As long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and affection, they tend to be quite happy wherever they live. Golden Retrievers do well in most climates and are sensitive to heat, as with most dog breeds. Your Golden Retriever Mix should be about the same. A mixed breed can take on potential health concerns related to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Overall, a Golden Retriever Mix should be a relatively healthy dog breed. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing on genetic conditions to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Golden Retrievers are famously easy to train, which makes them a great fit for owners of all experience levels. Depending on the other parent breed, there may be a chance that your Golden Retriever Mix could have an independent or stubborn streak. In this case, you will want to be prepared for puppy training and obedience classes in case you want a little help in dealing with stubbornness. Classes are a great idea either way because they help strengthen the bond you have with your puppy and are also a great opportunity to socialize your puppy. Golden Retrievers tend to have a medium-length coat that sheds moderately year-round and requires brushing a few times a week. Bathing is usually on an as-needed basis. This may be the same for your Golden Retriever Mix or their coat could require more or less grooming depending on the other parent breed. Monthly nail trimming is usually sufficient to keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks and careful cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Golden Retrievers are high-energy dogs. Your Golden Retriever Mix will likely be the same. Even if the other parent breed is a low or moderate-energy dog, you will need to be prepared to deal with a high-energy dog. Daily walks, playtime, plus extra activity are a must for dogs with a lot of energy. Be prepared to try a lot of different activities to find your favorites. Teach your dog to play frisbee , go for a swim, go running together, try taking a few hikes, go on trips to the dog park, and more. A Golden Retriever is a medium-sized dog breed that stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Your Golden Retriever Mix could be the same or they could take after the other parent breed. Make sure you talk to the breeder about the other breed in the mix and meet the mother dog. This can give you a good idea of what size to expect as your Golden Retriever Mix puppy grows. Golden Retrievers generally live years. Unless the life span of the other parent breed varies largely from this range, you should be able to expect something similar from your Golden Retriever Mix. The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Cockapoos have an infectious zest for life that spreads to everyone around them, that essential joie de vivre that makes every day a celebration. These guys are just plain happy to be alive. The true Cockapoo been bred with the goal of a healthy, hypoallergenic dog with a good temperament. When the cross works as intended, you get the intelligence and spirit of the Poodle with the sturdiness and field spirit of the Cocker. Efforts have been made over the last decade to clearly separate Cockapoos and Spoodles into two different hybrids, and some success has been achieved. If the type of Cocker involved is important to you, be sure to ask. Cockapoo Highlights 1. Cockapoo History When it comes to designer dogs, the Cockapoo is an old hybrid, popular since the s. The first breeding may have been accidental, but the happy result was a litter of puppies who were intelligent, almost odorless, had the low-shedding Poodle coat, and showed the easygoing and loving nature of the Cocker Spaniel. These puppies were well received, and the Cockapoo line began. Some efforts are being made today to establish breed standards and start the Cockapoo on the hard road of becoming a true breed, one producing offspring with consistent traits. Once the Cockapoo became more well-known, he only grew in popularity. The Cockapoo Club of America formed in and, in an effort to create breeding consistency, it created a breed standard. This group formed in and provides certification for Cockapoos who are the results of first- through sixth-generation breedings. The Toy Cockapoo can reach 10 inches in height but has a sturdier build, the bigger ones tipping the scales at just under 12 pounds. The Miniature Cockapoo weighs 13 to 18 pounds and ranges between 11 and 14 inches high. The Standard or Maxi Cockapoo should weigh more than 19 pounds and be at least 15 inches in height. Cockapoo Personality Intelligent and easy to please, the Cockapoo was established as a companion dog. He has an outgoing nature and usually gets along with everyone. Depending on his temperament, he can be active or he can simply enjoy snuggling up on the couch with you. He has the intelligence of his Poodle forebears but also the sweet disposition of his Cocker Spaniel ancestry. Socialization helps ensure that your Cockapoo puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. He prefers, always, to be with his family and can suffer from separation anxiety when left alone for too long. Positive reinforcement is the best way to train a Cockapoo; he can achieve high levels of obedience with time and patience. However, there is a general misconception that hybrid vigor automatically applies to mixed breeds. Cataracts : Cataracts cause opacity on the lens of the eye, resulting in poor vision. Cataracts usually occur in old age and sometimes can be surgically removed to improve vision. Patellar Luxation: Also known as slipped stifles, this is a common problem in small dogs. The patella is the kneecap. Luxation means dislocation of an anatomical part as a bone at a joint. Patellar luxation is when the knee joint often of a hind leg slides in and out of place, causing pain. This can be crippling, although many dogs lead relatively normal lives with this condition. X-ray screening is the most certain way to diagnose the problem. Either way, arthritis can develop as the dog ages. Allergies : Allergies are a common ailment in dogs, and the Cockapoo is no exception. Treatment varies according to the cause and may include dietary restrictions, medications, and environmental changes. Liver Disease : This condition is becoming more prevalent in Cocker Spaniels in two forms: chronic active hepatitis and copper toxicosis poisoning. Both conditions may or may not be genetic; at this point no one is certain. Ear Infections : These afflictions may plague the Cockapoo because of his floppy Cocker ears, which can trap moisture, dirt, and debris. Ask your veterinarian about appropriate ear care products. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. Health clearances are not issued to dogs younger than 2 years of age. They enjoy a good walk — and need it to keep them from becoming overweight. The best type of exercise, though, is a good play session in the backyard. Expect him to need at least 15 minutes of exercise every day. The Cockapoo is an adaptable breed. He can live in an apartment, though the smaller varieties seem to do better there than do the Maxi or Standard Cockapoos. They thrive when with their family and can suffer from separation anxiety when left for long periods of time — and that can lead to excessive barking and to destructive behavior. A crate is also a place where he can retreat for a nap. Crate training at a young age will also help your Cockapoo accept confinement if he ever needs to be boarded or hospitalized. NOTE: How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. Keep your Cockapoo in good shape by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. First, look down at him. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on his back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see his ribs without having to press hard. For more on feeding your Cockapoo, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Cockapoos can be found in all the colors and color combinations that are seen in both Cocker Spaniels and Poodles — a more rich variety of coat colors than is usual in many other breeds. The Cockapoo is usually seen au naturel, but many people like to clip the coat. However, it should only be trimmed to two to three inches in length. The coat should be brushed daily. To retain coat oils and health, he only need be bathed when absolutely necessary. Because his floppy Cocker ears block air circulation, the ears must be checked and cleaned weekly to prevent ear infections. Gently wipe out the ear — only the part you can see! Your Cockapoo may have an ear infection if the inside of the ear smells bad, looks red or seems tender, or he frequently shakes his head or scratches at his ear. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Dog toenails have blood vessels in them, and if you cut too far you can cause bleeding — and your dog may not cooperate the next time he sees the nail clippers come out. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Cockapoo Children And Other Pets The Cockapoo does well with youngsters , although he generally prefers homes with older, more considerate children. He also gets along with other dogs and pets. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Cockapoo Rescue Groups Cockapoos are often acquired without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one, and these dogs often end up in the care of rescue groups, in need of adoption or fostering. Cockapoo Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have both health and behavioral issues. More Info For You. However, it is the red Poodle that is so rare, so stunning and so special. Bringing this color into the Poodle genes and being able to produce such a shocking and beautiful dog was not easy. Let's take a look at how this was done and what you should know about his particular dog. Red poodles are rare and are of a faded gene. When they are produced, the pups usually come from dogs with apricot lines, which can be confusing to many since of course red is a much darker and deeper color. This gene may work to darken an apricot or sometimes a brown coat. One thing that is clear is that the red gene has absolutely no affect on blacks. The apricot gene is recessive to all Poodles except for the white. A true red will have black points. Liver points are acceptable but not preferred in the U. It took quite a while to achieve the amazing red Poodles that we see today. It was Ilse Konig of the Shangri-La Kennel who first came up with the idea of developing a red color standard. Experimental breeding was done by mating a small miniature apricot female Poodle to a large standard sized red at Palamares. The very first litter produced four red Poodle puppies. It is said that the color was simply amazing. Due to the rare pairing of two different sized Poodles, this placed the dogs into a category that is between the Miniature and the Standard, called the Klein or Moyan, which is popular and recognized in Europe. The biggest puppy from each litter was then bred…And this is what helped to slowly increase the size of the dog. After quite a few years of breeding and keeping red Poodle puppies, red Standards were then able to be bred relatively easily. Reds can go through many color changes as the dog grows. They occasionally are born a very bright red and then lighten over time. Some will stay lighter, however in some cases the Poodle will then darken up again as he or she ages. When a red does lighten, the color will usually become a sort of cinnamon color. In most cases, they are exceptionally dark and then lighten between 1 year old and 18 months old. Since a color change can occur during puppyhood.Or in the later adult stages, this means that the owner of an Apricot or tan my have a huge surprise if their Poodle's coat develops into this amazing, bright and rare color. So, do be aware that a red Poodle can fade, as fading is common with this breed. The exceptional color that one may see in a young puppy will often change with time; although this is not to say that the adult coat will not be gorgeous in its own right. When one does know that they have a red, here are the most popular names that are given: Amber. Contact Us Red Poodles With all the colors available in Poodles it could be hard to choose your puppy. However, it is the red Poodle that is so very rare, so stunning and so special! It does appear that it is a completely separate gene than the other poodle colors. Red Poodles are the newest color developed, it only became an official color in .A red poodle will have black points, nose, gums, under paws and very dark eyes. Liver points are acceptable, but not preferred in red poodles. Red poodles are a stunningly beautiful color, one that is very close to the color of humans with natural red hair. Poodles come in the light red new copper color to the darkest of any human with dark auburn hair. Ilse Konig was the first person who developed the red color of poodles. It was first developed on the Standard Poodle, then crossed with an Apricot female miniature Poodle. After many years of selective breeding, we now have Red Poodles in all the poodle sizes. While developing the red color, it was imperative to breed for all the qualities of a well-bred poodle, which includes temperament, health, conformation, and beauty. Missing any one of these characteristics the red poodles would not be complete! Typically, red poodle puppies are born quite red, then, when they are about 6 weeks old, their coats will turn less red. Then at about 10 weeks, you can see a definite dark red line next to the skin where the new coat color is coming in. It is thrilling to see this in a red poodle puppy. Their mature red color changes cannot be predicted by the color of the puppy. Some dark apricot poodles will stay a brighter color than the red poodles. The Poodle breed is a breed that does change color, as do some other breeds. Do be aware that red poodles can fade, it is common for these breeds to lighten up as they age. Each dog is an individual and will change. This is not to say that the mature red coat will not be gorgeous in its own right. Red Poodles, and poodles in general, tend to lead lively energetic lives. Red poodles are extremely loyal companions, making them ideal pets. They love to learn tricks and will perform for audiences of enthusiastic onlookers and their red color stands out above the rest! Most designer dogs have one thing in common: they are crossed with a Poodle. There is a very good reason for that, the Poodle cross brings up the intelligence and ability to train. Crosses also get some of the benefits of the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle, and less shedding. If you live afar, we can safely ship your red poodle puppy to the closest major jet port. We can connect with our laptops or smartphones and buy things online instantly from the comfort of our own homes. First, the vast majority of adverts selling puppies online are fake. In most cases, the dogs never existed, and buyers are duped out of hundreds or thousands of dollars. Many of the puppies for sale on Craigslist have come from puppy mills. These places are run purely for profit and will cut corners to boost their income. They keep their dogs in basic accommodation usually kennels , which are often filthy. The puppies are often weak and sickly, and many die pretty early on. There have also been hundreds of cases where people have bought purebred pups, but these turn out to be mutts. The answer is clear: Avoid Craigslist when buying animals! If you find a reputable local breeder, they will welcome you to the site to visit with them and meet the parent dogs. Some may allow you to see the pups, but access is sometimes restricted to stop them from getting sick. Check out the breeder thoroughly, and be sure to ask questions. A good breeder will tell you to do this anyway, as they have nothing to hide and will be only too pleased to connect you with happy customers who will provide testimonials. Even so, these beautiful animals can be found in shelters across America, along with thousands of other dogs. Instead of buying from a breeder, why not consider giving one of these dogs a forever home? If you think you could provide a loving home to a dog in need, take a look at the following site: 1. They are simply two devoted dog-lovers who spend much of their time helping homeless dogs. All puppies can be a challenge. Like other dogs, the GSD will go through teething. It will need potty training and obedience training. They are very social animals that need company, especially human company. Without this, they become frustrated and sometimes aggressive. German Shepherds shed a lot! Your GSD pup can come in one of 11 standard colors , not just the classic black and tan you often see. GSDs have a lifespan of between 7 and 10 years, and they have a few health concerns to watch out for, including arthritis and hip dysplasia. All good breeders test for the main health problems, which is another reason to use them. In conclusion, the German Shepherd is a wonderful animal that deserves a home that can match its energy and intelligence. Related articles:. She's a beautiful 6 year old 40lb GS mix. Final Thoughts Why is hydration important? Hydration is one of the most crucial factors in the health of a German Shepherd. When a German Shepherd loses more fluid than it is taking in, it will start to dehydrate. German Shepherds rely on hydration through water and food, in the same way, that other mammals do. This hydration allows their body to retain normal function, such as lubricating joints and regulating the temperature of the body. A German Shepherd will naturally lose water during the day from things such as panting, urinating and exercise. Keeping your GSD well hydrated will prevent serious health complications, alongside providing other benefits. The water helps in maintaining normal bodily functions, which includes the digestive system. If a GSD is not receiving enough water then the ability for food to be digested fully is diminished, which can result in food not being broken down properly. This can then result in your Shepherd becoming deficient in essential nutrients and causing a further knock-on affect to the body. Removing waste toxins in the body It goes without saying than any waste toxins within the body need to be removed as soon as possible, through urination and defecation. The toxins themselves are not immediately harmful to the body, provided they are removed accordingly before they become too highly concentrated. These toxins are filtered from the kidneys and using water are excreted from the body, which is aided by ensuring your German Shepherd is well hydrated. This is often the case when it comes to food and water too, as a dog will typically have a behaviour pattern they follow. This behavioural shift could come in the form of increasing the amount of water they drink, drinking less water, or even no water at all. How much water should an adult German Shepherd Drink? The primary deciding factor for the amount of water that a dog requires per day is its weight. Under the assumption that the dog is in a healthy condition, the dog will typically require an estimated 1 oz of water intake per pound of body weight, each day. It will also differ between male and female dogs due to the difference in the average body weights between the two genders. Therefore, a male German Shepherd weighing in between 66 — 88lbs, would require between 66 — 88 oz of water intake per day to maintain normal function. In comparison, a female German Shepherd weighing in between 48 — 70lbs, would require 48 — 70 oz of water intake per day to maintain normal function. However, this is a rule of thumb and should be followed with caution. How much water should a puppy be drinking? Whilst you would expect a young German Shepherd puppy to drink far less than their adult counterpart, you would actually be surprised to hear that they often require more. However, as they are eventually weaned off of the milk, they will require a source of water and solid food, which needs to be provided in accordance to their weight and activity levels. Your young German Shepherd puppy requires regular hydration in the form of one-half cup of water during each two-hour period of the day. As the German Shepherd puppies continue to grow in size and weight their water intake will too. This can vary from 0. Frequently weighing the puppies will help to ensure you are always providing the right balance of both food and water for them and keep them in good health. How much water should a German Shepherd Drink? Whilst the required water intake of a German Shepherd will primarily be based upon their body weight, there are other factors to consider that can also contribute to increased water consumption. If your property is climate controlled then this may not be as much of a concern whilst indoors, however you will still need to consider the climate when taking your dog for regular exercise. The Weather Weather changes will result in you taking appropriate action based upon the varying conditions each day. Therefore, if the weather is sunny and warm you will need to consider areas of shade and additional water for your German Shepherd to be comfortable and remain hydrated. Diet If your German Shepherd is fed on a dry food diet then a continuously available water supply is strongly recommended, especially during feeding times. As your dog will not be receiving any water from the food itself and will, therefore, require an alternative source of water in order to stay well hydrated. Further information will follow below to discuss the benefits of water food in comparison to dry dog food. New or existing health conditions If your German Shepherd has any new or existing health conditions, then this could impact their water intake and should be accounted for. These conditions could include Kidney disease and Diabetes, in which an excessive amount of water is lost and must be replenished accordingly. It is therefore important to monitor for any changes in drinking behavior that could indicate a significant cause for concern. If you are taking your German Shepherd for walks, playing catch or other physical activities then it is perfectly normal for more water to be consumed during and after these activities. German Shepherds are a naturally active breed of dog and therefore may consume more water than you expect, if you have been accustomed to another breed of dog for example. Therefore, it is important to keep all of these factors into consideration and determine what their habits are and identify any changes you have noticed. How to check for dehydration? Dehydration is a serious concern for all dogs, so knowing the symptoms of dehydration can help you to tackle the problem before it causes serious health concerns. Water is an important part of the overall metabolic process, which includes digestion, brain activity, blood flow, and breathing, as well as kidney and liver function. It also helps young dogs grow big and strong. Recommended Videos And, since a dog cools by panting, drinking water is essential for replacing the moisture that evaporates from their tongues, nasal passages, and lungs during the process. Lastly, a well-hydrated dog has a moist nose, which aids in their ability to smell. One of the best ways to make sure your puppy is drinking enough water is to set up a schedule. Instead of leaving a bowl out for them to drink at will, ration their intake. Every few hours, measure the appropriate amount of water into their drinking bowl and call your puppy. Encourage your pup to drink the water, and when they do, reward them with praise and a few minutes of playtime. When you add potty training to the mix, you need to be mindful of a few other factors. First, you want to reduce water intake at night since the goal is to work your pup up to a full 8 hours of sleep. Make sure they get a drink after the evening walk, say half an hour to an hour following a meal. Then put the bowl away for the night. This works especially well if you otherwise confirm that Fido has had enough liquid during the day. Overheating and illnesses, especially those that include vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, put puppies at risk of dehydration. Chewing on ice cubes adds an element of fun while it aids in hydration. Flavor drinking water with chicken or beef broth. Put a treat at the bottom of the bowl. Overhydration If it seems your puppy is drinking too much water, pay attention. Dogs, and puppies, in particular, are super curious. Your little buddy may just be playing in the water bowl, which is more of a behavioral issue than a medical problem. But if you think your puppy is doing more drinking than playing, they may have an underlying medical issue that needs to be addressed immediately. Symptoms of overhydration include:. When do puppies start drinking water? Before you even bring your puppy home , they will have already been introduced to to drinking water. Puppies start drinking water at around 3 - 4 weeks of age, at the same time they switch from milk to solid food and once their teeth have started to grow. How much water should a puppy drink? As a general rule of thumb, a puppy needs approximately 30ml 1oz of water per 0. However, the exact amount of water needed to keep them happy and healthy will vary, as each and every puppy is wonderfully unique. As a first time dog owner, you might be wondering how long a puppy can go without water, in which case the below information can help. Do puppies need water at night? Unless your puppy is unwell or suffering from a medical condition, you should avoid leaving water out for them at night. Most puppies over the age of 12 weeks can go without water for 8 hours, but it's inevitable that you may wake up to a mess every now and then. Young dogs under 12 weeks are not able to hold their bladder for too long, and up until around 9 months old they're likely to need the toilet with 10 - 30 minutes of having a drink. By stopping water intake before bedtime, you limit the number of night time wake up calls and decrease the chances of any accidents occurring. This is primarily the case during toilet training, before a puppy becomes a dog and is still learning the ropes. Over time, your puppy will start to settle and sleep through the night, and when this happens, you won't need to remove their water anymore. Refilling their bowl with fresh water can also encourage healthy puppy hydration. Reward them when they drink, using treats or positive praise. Grab some ice cubes - Whether you drop them in their water bowl, or give them a cube to suck on and chew, this can be a great way to get more water in them without forcing them to drink from their bowl. You could also add a little water or wet food to their dry kibble, or switch out some of their treats with high water content foods like cucumber or watermelon, or even dog ice lollies if you notice your dog wont drink water but will eat. Start by adding warm water to their dry food. This will create a soup like consistency and give them a chance to slurp up the water as they eat, familiarising them with the idea of drinking liquid from a bowl. Use a shallow dish as a puppy water bowl. Praise them when they drink. Each time they go for a sip, reward them with praise so they know this is desirable behaviour. Entice them with ice or taste. My puppy is drinking a lot of water, should I be concerned? Worried your puppy or dog drinking more than usual? This is a natural concern for all dog owners, which is why it's so important to familiarise yourself with what seems normal for your dog. Remember that each dog is unique, but if you notice anything out of the ordinary, you should always contact your vet for advice. Puppies are very susceptible to change, so a simple act of switching their food or increasing their exercise can prompt them to drink more water. Typically this should settle back down in time, but if you notice continued guzzling, closely monitor your pup. Related Articles:. Disease Increased Activity Increased activity leads to more water loss through sweat and panting, hence the need for German Shepherds to drink more to rehydrate and regulate their body temperature. Physical activity is essential for a German Shepherd's health and well-being. However, more activity means more water is required. Like humans, dogs lose water through sweating mainly through their paws and panting. These mechanisms help cool their bodies down, but they must also replace the lost fluids with drinking water. The more intense the activity, the more water your dog will need. For example, after a long walk, run, or play session, it's normal for your German Shepherd to drink more than usual. It's essential to always provide access to clean, fresh water, especially after exercise, to help them replenish lost fluids and prevent dehydration. Hot Weather Hot weather can make German Shepherds drink more water as they lose fluids through panting, a natural cooling mechanism. Thus, they need to consume more water to replace lost fluids. Dogs, including German Shepherds, have different ways of dealing with hot weather than humans. Instead of sweating throughout their bodies, dogs primarily cool themselves down through panting, which leads to a higher rate of water evaporation from their bodies. This evaporation, while helping to cool them down, also significantly loses body water. As the temperature rises, German Shepherds will increase their water consumption to compensate for this water loss and prevent dehydration. Access to fresh, clean water is essential to hydrate your dog during hot weather. Keeping them in a cool, shaded area during the hottest parts of the day is also advisable to minimize heat stress and excessive water loss. Always be aware of the signs of dehydration in dogs, such as excessive panting, dry nose and gums, and decreased activity levels. Diet German Shepherds on a dry diet typically need more water to help facilitate digestion, as dry kibble has a low moisture content compared to wet or raw food. The type of diet a dog follows directly impacts their water needs. While dry food requires your dog to drink more water, it doesn't mean it's an inferior choice. Many pet owners choose kibble for its convenience, long shelf life, and potential dental benefits. However, if you feed your German Shepherd a dry diet, always provide ample fresh, clean water to meet their hydration needs. Monitoring your dog's water intake can help you ensure they're staying hydrated regardless of their diet. Age Age influences water consumption in German Shepherds. Puppies, due to growth and higher activity levels, may drink more. Similarly, older dogs might have health issues increasing their water intake. Both ends of the age spectrum in German Shepherds can see increased water consumption. Puppies are typically more active and are growing rapidly, which necessitates more water. They also have smaller bladders and may drink small amounts frequently. On the other hand, senior dogs may also consume more water. As dogs age, their risk of developing health issues such as kidney disease or diabetes, which can increase thirst, rises. Additionally, older dogs might have a reduced ability to concentrate urine, which can lead to increased water intake. Regardless of age, it's essential to ensure your German Shepherd has access to clean, fresh water at all times and monitor any significant changes in their drinking habits. Regular vet checks can help detect any age-related health issues early. Health Issues Specific health issues, such as diabetes, kidney disease, or urinary tract infections, can make German Shepherds drink more water due to increased thirst, a common symptom of these conditions. Health issues are a significant factor that can influence your German Shepherd's water consumption. Diabetes and kidney disease affect the body's ability to filter and retain water, increasing thirst and urination. Similarly, urinary tract infections can cause discomfort and frequent urination, making your dog drink more water to compensate. Monitoring your German Shepherd's drinking habits and watching for any sudden changes is crucial. An unusual increase in water intake, especially when accompanied by other symptoms like weight loss, changes in appetite, or lethargy, should not be ignored. It may indicate an underlying health issue requiring immediate veterinary attention. Regular vet check-ups can also help in the early detection and management of these conditions, ensuring your pet's health and well-being. Medications Certain medications given to German Shepherds can increase their thirst as a side effect, increasing water intake to quench this thirst and maintain hydration. It's not uncommon for some medications prescribed to your German Shepherd to have side effects, one of which could be increased thirst. For instance, drugs like prednisone, a type of steroid often used to treat inflammation, can cause an increase in water consumption. Similarly, certain medications for heart disease or anti-seizure drugs can also increase thirst. If your German Shepherd starts to drink more water around the same time a new medication has been introduced, the two may be connected. However, it's essential not to stop giving your pet their medication without first consulting your veterinarian. Instead, provide your dog access to clean, fresh water, monitor their intake, and discuss any concerns with your vet during follow-up visits or over the phone. They can offer advice, adjust the dosage, or suggest alternative treatments if necessary. Stress or Anxiety Stress or anxiety can trigger excessive drinking in German Shepherds as part of their coping mechanism. This behavior is often observed during stressful situations or significant changes. Just like humans, dogs can also experience stress and anxiety. Situations such as moving to a new house, adding a new family member, or being left alone for long periods can induce stress in German Shepherds. In response to these stressful situations, some dogs might start drinking more water as a coping mechanism. However, it's crucial to rule out any medical reasons for excessive drinking before attributing it to psychological factors. If you notice that your German Shepherd drinks more water during stressful periods, try to identify and address the stressor. You should introduce changes gradually or use positive reinforcement techniques to reduce stress. Consider seeking advice from a professional dog behaviorist or your vet for persistent issues. Dehydration Dehydration in German Shepherds can lead to increased water intake. When a dog's body lacks sufficient water, it triggers thirst to restore balance and prevent further dehydration. Dehydration, or the lack of enough water in the body, can significantly increase your German Shepherd's water intake. It's a compensatory response by the body to restore fluid balance and prevent dehydration. Preventing dehydration in your German Shepherd is crucial by providing constant access to fresh, clean water. However, if your dog seems excessively thirsty and consumes more water than usual, it's essential to check for other signs of dehydration. These can include dry gums, decreased skin elasticity, and lethargy. If you suspect your dog is dehydrated, consult a vet immediately. Prompt rehydration, often requiring veterinary intervention, is key to preventing serious complications. Pregnancy or Lactation Pregnant or lactating German Shepherds require more water due to the increased demands of carrying and nourishing puppies, leading to an increased water intake. The gestation and lactation period place unique demands on a female German Shepherd's body, increasing the need for water. When pregnant, a dog's body works harder to nourish the growing puppies, leading to an increased metabolic rate and, consequently, a higher water demand. This demand increases even more during lactation. Producing milk to feed the puppies requires a substantial amount of water. As such, it's perfectly normal for a lactating German Shepherd to drink more water than usual. To support your dog during pregnancy and lactation, ensure she has constant access to clean water. Monitor her drinking and overall health closely, and maintain regular veterinary check-ups. If any sudden changes or if she shows signs of distress, lethargy, or decreased appetite, seek veterinary care immediately. Specific diseases can significantly influence a German Shepherd's water consumption. Similarly, liver disease can interfere with the body's ability to manage water and electrolyte balance properly, leading to increased water intake. These diseases, along with others like kidney disease or diabetes, often present increased thirst and urination as early symptoms. If your German Shepherd drinks more water than usual, it could indicate an underlying health issue. Therefore, it's essential to recognize sudden changes in your dog's water intake. If your German Shepherd is consuming water excessively, especially if accompanied by other signs like changes in appetite, lethargy, or unusual behavior, consult with your veterinarian as soon as possible. Timely diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve the prognosis for most diseases. Do German Shepherds like drinking water? Always keep an eye on changes in your pet's behaviors, as they could be communicating their discomfort or the onset of an illness. Regular veterinary check-ups can also help detect any health issues early. German Shepherd puppy obsessed with drinking water A German Shepherd puppy's obsession with drinking water could be experiencing high thirst due to increased activity, diet, or potential health issues. Consult a vet if concerned. A German Shepherd puppy obsessed with drinking water may seem unusual, but it could be due to various factors. Given their high energy levels and rapid growth, Puppies consume more water. Also, if fed a mostly dry kibble diet, they may drink more water to help digestion. However, if your puppy's water obsession seems excessive or is accompanied by other concerning behaviors such as frequent urination, lethargy, or changes in appetite, it could indicate a health issue. Conditions like urinary tract infections, diabetes, or kidney disease could cause increased thirst. It's essential to monitor your puppy's behavior and water consumption closely. This article will answer that question, explain how much water your GSD should be drinking on a daily basis, and things that could cause your German Shepherd to drink more water than normal. Yes, German Shepherds are large dogs and as such will drink more water than a smaller dog. In addition, German Shepherds are very active so they will need more water to keep hydrated than more sedentary dogs. Normally, dogs should drink an ounce of water for every pound they weigh on a daily basis, but I found that many German Shepherds drink a little more than one ounce per pound. My German Shepherd is 72 pounds, so that means she should be consuming around 72 ounces of water daily. However, there are various conditions that could cause your German Shepherd to need to drink more than this on a regular basis. If it seems like your dog is drinking excessively, look to see if any of the below conditions are present that would increase their need for water. When it is hot outside, your GSD will drink more as a way of cooling themselves down. Conversely, colder air tends to be drier, and the dry air can make your dog dehydrated, thus you may find your pup drinking more in the wintertime as well. Exercise Another reason your German Shepherd will drink a lot of water is because they have been physically active. Just like humans get thirsty when exercising, so do dogs. So, if your GSD just finished running around, expect them to be thirstier than normal. Medication There are a lot of medications that have the side effect of causing thirst in dogs. When my girl was put on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory, the vet told me to expect her to need more water than normal. If your dog was just put on a new medication, that could be the cause of the extra drinking, but check with your vet to be certain. Illnesses Another reason a German Shepherd will drink more water is because they have some sort of illness. Conditions such as cancer, liver disease and diabetes require your dog to drink more water and their body tries to fight off the illness. Also, as stated above, sometimes the medications they are on to help with the illness also increases their thirst. Diet What your dog eats directly affects how much they drink. Dogs that consume a dry kibble will usually need more to drink than a dog that is on a wet food diet. Also, if you give your dog the occasional human food treat like peanut butter , bread , bacon , or fries you may find that they drink more after consuming these foods. Food that are dry, sticky, or salty will cause your dog to take some extra trips to the water bowl. Age Age is another factor is to consider when looking at water consumption. Puppies are known for drinking quite a bit. This is normal though because as your GSD pup is growing their bodies need more water to support their developing system. Older dogs can also drink more because elderly dogs are more prone to developing conditions that would cause thirst such as diabetes, various infections, liver or kidney disease among other illnesses. If you have an older dog that has been drinking more than normal, make an appointment with the vet just to be sure nothing more serious than dehydration is going on. Final Thoughts German Shepherds can definitely drink more water than some other dog breeds. Heavier water consumption is normal for a large active breed like German Shepherds but there are also other factors that can cause your dog to drink more such as age, illness, medication and the weather. An automatic water bowl is a great tool for providing fresh water all day long. This behavior may warrant a visit to the vet, especially if your dog is showing other concerning symptoms. Here are the most common reasons for German Shepherds that drink a lot of water. Your German Shepherd has a Medical Illness A medical condition can most often lead to an increased thirst. Your German Shepherd may be affected by infections like urinary tract infection or longer-term conditions like diabetes. The vet will observe and ask about a number of symptoms and may also request a urine and blood test for further diagnosis. For example, German Shepherds that eat too much dry food may drink a lot more water than usual. Dog foods like kibble contain very little water content so the German Shepherd will need to compensate that by drinking more water. The same applies for high-sodium food, which should be avoided for a number of health reasons. Large amounts of salt consumption can lead to sodium poisoning so make sure your German Shepherd stays away from such treats. Your German Shepherd is Feeling Hot German shepherds are able to tolerate hot summer weather but not for too long of a period. You may notice the dog is always trying to look for a cool shaded spot to rest in. If you have a backyard then the German Shepherd may also try to dig a hole to rest in. Large dog breeds like German Shepherds will need a decent amount of water to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Generally-speaking, an adult dog will need up to 2. Jan Reisen points out that how much puppy drinks depends on activity level, size, and age. Puppies consume more water than adults. When puppies start eating solid food, half a cup of water every two hours is reasonable. After weaning, a puppy needs half an ounce to an ounce of water per pound of body weight. An eight-week-old puppy might require 20 ounces of water daily. One of the reasons water is so vital to your German Shepherd puppy is because of its influence on the metabolic process. This process includes breathing, blood flow, brain activity, and digestion. Sufficient water, which makes up most of the blood supply, allows the blood to transport oxygen and clear away toxins that can harm your puppy. Because insufficient water negatively impacts this process, a dog is at risk of organ damage. How much water your puppy gets also allows them to regulate their body temperature. However, panting is a double-edged sword, in that your puppy loses more water during this process. When hot weather or heavy physical exertion is making your puppy pant more, the dog will require more water. When everything functions correctly, your dog will have an appropriate energy level. An adequate energy level helps ensure proper health. Taking up the water at night is a good idea, although you will need to make sure you have a consistent schedule. Water and food for your puppy should be taken up two or three hours before your family usually goes to bed. Any changes in how much your puppy drinks may require closer evaluation at your next vet visit. Even young German Shepherd puppies have good instincts about self-regulating their water usage. However, diarrhea, excessive urination, fever, and vomiting can all dehydrate your puppy. A diet of too much dry food can also cause dehydration. Making sure you know the dehydration signs so you can check your puppy for them makes a difference. Wendy Bedwell-Wilson emphasizes the importance of proper hydration and also points out a couple of ways to find out if your dog is adequately hydrated. Skin that snaps back into place is a sign of a well-hydrated dog, while skin that slowly snaps back is a sign of dehydration. Sticky or day gums are a sign of dehydration. Also, gently press their gums and see how long it takes for them to change back to a healthy pink color, no more than three seconds. When your German Shepherd puppy is mildly dehydrated, gradually give them smaller sips of water. Ice cubes can help provide extra hydration relatively quickly. You can also try an electrolyte powder mix, as these are quite effective. If your puppy is severely dehydrated, evidenced by a loss of skin elasticity, consider this situation a medical emergency. When your puppy has severe dehydration, IV fluids may be necessary to restore proper fluids. However, there are a few things you can do to encourage more drinking. The cleaner both the water and the bowl are, the more they will entice your dog. When you see your puppy drinking water out of the bowl, praise the dog and give them a treat. German Shepherds are very responsive to rewards, and associating drinking water with a reward will encourage them to do so even without prompting on your part. Offering the water in the form of ice cubes can be an enticement for a dog. Dogs often love ice cubes as a treat that provides plenty of amusement. Another bonus is that, if your puppy is teething, the ice cubes can provide relief. Using chicken or bone broth to flavor the water can also entice your dog to drink more of it. Sometimes the added flavor provides an incentive that water alone does not. However, make sure you check the water for freshness because broth can spoil. Sometimes, all you need to do is make water a little more interesting for your puppy. Dogs love the variety as much as we do. Your German Shepherd Dog can, in fact, consume too much water. Overhydrating, also known as water intoxication, can be just as dangerous as dehydration in its own way. If your puppy is showing symptoms, veterinary help might be necessary. When your dog plays in the water a lot of swims, they may accidentally swallow too much water. Drinking too much water at one time can also lead to this problem. It is important to always supervise your dog around water. Water intoxication can make your dog feel very sluggish and lose coordination, including having a staggering gait. Nausea, vomiting, and bloating are some of the gastrointestinal symptoms that might occur. Dilated pupils, excessive drooling , and pale gums are also signs of water intoxication. When your dog has these symptoms after having had a lot of water to drink or has been swimming, overhydration is very likely. Top Dog Tips highlights the importance of seeking veterinary help. More severe symptoms might include difficulty breathing, collapse, coma, or even death. Possible treatments include IV fluids for electrolyte balance, diuretics to help the dog urinate, and mannitol in case water intoxication has caused cranial pressure. Any water ingested can still be absorbed without intervention. There is nothing wrong with innocent water play, as seen in this video.

Data source: Google Australia KW Planner Common Questions to Ask your Dog Breeder There are many ways for you to adopt a puppy, but it is always recommended to buy from a responsible breeder to make sure you get a happy and healthy dog. Here is an important thing to remember: not all purebreds are guaranteed to be in great shape. This is why it is imperative that you ask your prospective breeder a lot of questions. This way, you get to weed out a bad seller. Can I meet the parents? A great way to get an idea of how your desired puppy will likely turn out as an adult dog is by meeting the parents. In such a case, ask your seller what the sire is like. Meeting the dam is enough to know more about your puppy of choice. Interact with her to see if she is calm and well-mannered. How do you go about socialising your puppies? Find out if it is comfortable around other people and animals. Learn how it reacts to new and different sounds, sights, and odours. Have the parents been examined for genetic conditions? Once you have decided on a particular breed, it is suggested that you research the common genetic defects associated with it. If there are health issues about its bloodline that need clarifying, write them down so that you can ask your breeder. A good breeder should be able to tell you every possible disease your chosen puppy may acquire from its parents later on. They should also not be hesitant to disclose if the sire or dam has had any health problems of late. If your seller has nothing to show or seems ignorant about their breed, take it as a sign to walk away. What kind of food can I feed the puppy? It is important that you ask your breeder what food your chosen puppy is used to being fed. This is because you need to keep your dog on the same diet for the next few days once you bring it home. The reason for this is to minimise the risk of your canine experiencing tummy upset. They may even give you a diet sheet that lets you know when to feed your puppy and how much. This means, combining the old food with bits of the new one. Is the puppy up-to-date on its vaccinations? Puppies must be vaccinated and examined before being sold. When meeting with your breeder, ask them what shots your chosen puppy has already received. Find out what other shots need to be administered and when. Most puppies are born with worms, which is why they should be dewormed from the time they are two weeks old. Find out from your breeder if your desired puppy has already been dewormed, and if the process is being done religiously every two weeks. Any good breeder will tell you to follow up with your own vet once you have brought your puppy home. This way, the dog receives its shots at appropriate intervals and reduces its risk of acquiring a life-threatening disease. Do you offer a health guarantee and contract? Ethical breeders offer a health guarantee on their puppies as protection for both them and the buyer. A good contract explains the responsibility of the seller should the dog develop a congenital disease. It also states the terms carefully and in a way that is easy to understand. It is recommended that you get a copy of the contract in advance. Read it thoroughly so that you do not miss anything important. Before signing the contract and picking up your new dog, do not hesitate to ask your breeder to provide you with references from other purchasers. Should your seller ask you for references as well, do not be surprised. Next Quality bloodlines. The soundness and health of our breeding lines is key at Chava Labs. Most of our puppies go on to become family companions, with some going on to become working gun-dogs and assistance dogs. Genetically screened. In addition to that, all Chava Labs have excellent hip and elbow scores. We breed principally for the wonderful Labrador temperament, soundness and type! Our puppies are given the best possible start to life with a premium diet, as well as being raised with adult dogs and children. I had done my research and knew Chava Labs bloodlines and breeding program was exactly what we were looking for. Right from our initial inquiry about their breeding program and adoptive process they showed as much care and diligence in approving us as a forever family as we had put into finding them. They were unapologetically focused on the wellbeing of their pups — it was obvious Labradors are their passion and it shows in the quality of the dogs they breed. I am so glad that I found Chava Labs. Kylie was quick to respond to my initial inquiry and I was thrilled when they told me there was a puppy for me. Along with my gorgeous Harry also known as Chava Darroch , they sent home a puppy pack, full to the brim with toys, goodies and helpful information. It was a fantastic bonus that the puppy also came toilet trained! Hayley Harry's Family We feel absolutely lucky to have found such amazing breeders. They are meticulous and dedicated right down to the smallest of details. Their passion for dogs is evident from the very first conversation. In the days following his arrival, he was quickly so well adjusted and came to us completely toilet trained. He learnt basic commands and walked on a lead with ease. We credit this largely to great breeding, and good early training. Thank you to Chava Labs for giving us such a treasured family member. He has stolen our hearts!
Temperament Affectionate, friendly, loving, playful, and good with children. Pug mixed with Pomeranian makes one small dog, so you can expect a relatively light dog easy to carry around. Its ears may either be erect if it takes on the Pomeranian side and Floppy if the Pug side. The color can be unpredictable, and you can expect to either have a pure black or tan dog or sometimes a combination of both. Moreover, since Pomeranians are fluffy dogs, you can expect your dog to look like a pug but with a fluffy coat. Most of the time, however, you can expect the right combination of features of both dogs. Just make sure, however, to give them regular brushing to prevent fur tangling. The most important thing you need to know about Pug mixed with Pomeranian is their personality. Overall, their temperament is a great asset for the breed, as they can get along with almost anyone without any problem. They are incredibly loyal and affectionate, but can sometimes be stubborn and mischievous too. Pomeranian and Pug Cross Puppies for Sale The essential step in buying your puppy is choosing who to buy from. You want to make sure you buy from a reputable breeder, who employs ethical practices and has a standard. You can begin your journey by doing short research or getting recommendations from your friends, on where to get your forever companion. Are they a registered breeder? Health conditions of the existing animals in the area. Ask to look at the parents of the puppies. The health of your pups also depends on the health of its parents. Make sure they seem happy, healthy, friendly, and clean. The unfortunate reality of breeders is sometimes they keep breeding puppies without full regard with the condition of the parent dog, especially the mother. Ask for their health screening on all dogs. A good breeder will, at all times, have their dog parents and puppies regularly checked for any health conditions. How many dogs they have for sale? Are you buying from a breeder who runs a puppy mill, because as much as possible you want to avoid buying from those places? The breed is easy to manage, and it includes essential grooming responsibilities such as: Brush their coat at least two or three times a week to make their skins look shiny and beautiful. You want to avoid their fur from getting tangled, especially if they take on the coat of Pomeranians. Keep their eyes and ears clean. Using a soft towel, wipe any debris or discharge around their eyes, to prevent health complications from arising. Brush their teeth regularly to prevent plaque from accumulating and tooth decay. Give them regular baths, as necessary. Doing this prevents ticks from hiding within its coat. The Pomeranian and Pug cross is easy to manage, and you only need to be reminded of these important details for their grooming: Dedicate time to regularly brush their coat, using a metal-pin slicker brush, to help detangle their coat. Bathe them regularly, especially during the allergy seasons of the Pomeranian crossed with a pug. Make sure to use products which are gentle on the skin. Clip their nails, especially since the Pug mixed with Pomeranian are hyper and playful dogs. You want to avoid any situation of being unnecessarily cut. However, there may be some instance when they suffer from seasonal allergies and dry skin, which can nevertheless be treated. However, there are some health problems common to small dogs, such as the Pug and Pomeranian Cross which you need to watch out for. Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome — this is a condition which affects the upper airways of dogs, common in most flat faced and short-nosed dogs. This may be present in your Pomeranian mixed with a Pug if the dominant gene your pup will have is that of the Pugs. If you notice your dog becoming lethargic, or tremoring in the face, then they may be having an attack. Some causes include being obese, or too much exposure to smoke and dust. Whelping complications — this occurs among female dogs who experience giving birth. Since their pelvic opening is narrow and limited, giving birth can be limited. Here are also some health problems which may be particular to the Pomeranian Pug Mix: Dry Skin — this can be caused by allergies, parasites, or other medical disorders. For this specific kind of breed, its source should come from allergies. Left untreated, the skin condition worsens to atopic dermatitis and lead to secondary skin infections. Symptoms — the symptoms are easy to identify such as itchiness, flaking, scabs, and hair loss. Prevention — feed them with high quality and balanced diet, and groom them regularly to prevent any buildup of debris and dirt. Eye Infections — Some allergies can cause eye discharge, which is results in mucus-like substances forming around the eye and getting in the eye. If your pup takes on the eye of Pugs, you have to be particularly careful with their eyes, as it often protrudes from its face. Be mindful, however, that they still need to receive their daily nutritional requirements. A mixed-breed can inherit any combination of traits from their parents. Should a Pug Mix take after their Pug parent, they will be an affectionate, social dog that loves their families. A Pug tends to be playful, social, friendly, and gentle. They thrive on attention and affection and tend to get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. As long as they are well-socialized, they also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. They can be prone to barking and it can become a nuisance behavior if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Pug Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely introduce their own potential quirks. You can also meet the mother in person to get a sense of her temperament and see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Pugs are moderately adaptable dogs. Although they do well in apartments as well as larger homes, they are particularly sensitive to heat and cold as a snub-nosed dog breed. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect the same from a Pug Mix. The other parent breed could still introduce some traits that affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs, but it is not a guarantee. They can inherit none, some, or all of the conditions common to their parent breeds. From the Pug side, potential health conditions to be aware of include eye problems, luxating patella , encephalitis, and hip dysplasia. As a brachycephalic, or snub-nosed, dog, they are prone to allergies and respiratory issues. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. A Pug is eager to please and tends to pick up on things quickly. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make a Pug Mix easy to train or more difficult, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pug Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Pug coat, it will shed a bit year-round, require weekly brushing, and the occasional bath. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Pugs tend to sit in a low to moderate energy range. Usually, daily walks and some playtime are enough to keep them happy and healthy. They may be up for more activity, but can also get easily overheated. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help make sure they get enough activity. If the other parent breed also has a low to moderate activity level, then you can expect something similar from a Pug Mix. However, if the other parent breed is a higher energy dog, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Pugs are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Although it is not a guarantee, you can meet the mother in person to get an idea of what to expect in a fully-grown Pug Mix. A Pug generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, but you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Pug Mix. Featured Pug Mix Article. Because a mix can inherit any combination fo traits from their parents, you do want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. If a Pomeranian Mix takes after their Pom parent, you can expect a small, fluffy companion that is affectionate, playful, and has a big personality. Poms tend to be active little dogs that love their families and are affectionate with them. They tend to do well with children, other pets, and other dogs. They can be suspicious of strangers, but they love attention so will warm up quickly as long as they have been properly socialized. Pomeranians are alert dogs that are prone to barking. If left unchecked, it can become an issue. By training your dog to stop barking early on, you can keep this from becoming a nuisance issue at home and also when out interacting with other people and dogs. If the other parent breed is known for having a similar temperament, then you can expect something similar from a Pom Mix. You do want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely have their own quirks. Although the breeder should have started some socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home to help them grow into a well-rounded dog. Pomeranians tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They do well in most climates, but are very sensitive to heat. They adapt well to apartments as well as larger homes and do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect the same from a Pomeranian Mix. However, you do still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they are likely to introduce their own set of quirks and traits. Good, reputable breeding practices matter. And, just as a mix can inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, they could also inherit all of them or some combination of them. From the Pomeranian side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Pom Mix include patellar luxation , hip dysplasia, eye problems, hypothyroidism , epilepsy, and heart issues. They can also be prone to having allergies. As a small dog breed, they are also prone to developing dental disease. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests, clearances, or evaluations that have been done. Pomeranians are intelligent and generally easy to train. Even though this also makes it easy to train them into bad habits and housetraining can be difficult, they tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also highly trainable, you can expect something similar from a Pomeranian Mix. However, if the other parent breed has traits that make them more difficult to train, then you will need to be prepared for that possibility in a Pom Mix puppy. A mixed-breed can end up with a coat that is just like one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. If a Pom Mix ends up with a Pom coat, they will be fluffy, shed a bit year-round, shed more as the seasons change, need daily brushing, and need a monthly bath. Professional grooming is also recommended every weeks for a Pomeranian. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed helps prevent ear infections. Daily brushing or daily use of an enzyme toothpaste paired with cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Poms may be energetic little dogs, but they sit in a more moderate activity level. Daily walks plus some playtime are enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. If the other parent breed has a similar activity level, then you can expect the same from a Pom Mix. If the other parent breed has a higher or lower activity level, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for that potential range. Pomeranians are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. So, you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pomeranian generally lives for years. Used to being an "only child", black Labrador Flower was not amused when her owner brought home two golden retriever puppies—her new sibling Daisy and a temporary foster called Zoey. On the day of the puppies' arrival, Flower was taken outside to meet the newcomers, who were busy exploring the backyard. Black Labrador Flower's hilarious reaction to her new puppy sibling went viral, leaving dog lovers in hysterics. In response, Flower would purposefully seek out spots the youngsters were too small to reach, attempting to stay six feet away at all times. Flower refused to acknowledge Daisy at first, but the puppy kept trying to bond with her big sister. As the family was only watching Zoey temporarily, the puppy was moved to her new home after six weeks. This made it easier for Flower and Daisy to bond. It definitely took time for her to warm up to Daisy. They began playing frisbee together and hanging out on the deck by the backyard pool. Three years later, and the pair are the best of friends. The first scene shows a tiny Daisy slowly approaching Flower, but the Labrador refuses to look her way. The next clip shows Daisy and Zoey diving on Flower, who looks extremely unhappy about the situation. It took a while, but now black Labrador Flower and golden retriever Daisy are the best of friends. The cute clip melted hearts and went viral, receiving almost , views and over 27, likes.
