To get attention Howling due to a trigger Most of the time, their howling is simply harmless communication that ends as quickly as it begins. You might notice it when the fire department drives by with sirens blaring, or a certain commercial comes on the television, or during part of a particular song. This howl can be fun and is comical to watch. They seem to enjoy their howling time and then move onto their normal dog business. Howling at other dogs or wildlife If their howling becomes more frequent, it is usually due to the neighborhood dogs howling or even nearby wildlife making animal sounds. This type of howling is usually easy to identify because there is an entire chorus of dogs howling at the same time. The dog may be relaxed or tense depending on what is going on or if they are howling in an attempt to alert their owner. Howling to get attention Dogs might also howl to get attention. This usually happens when they are separated from their owners in another room, crate, outside, or even at another location, such as the vet or while boarding. Howl as a form of begging The begging howl is less common but it can happen in a way similar to a begging bark. In this case, the dog is also howling to get attention and beg for what it wants, such as a toy or treat. Never give the begging dog the treat or attention while they howl unless you want it to become a habit. Howling due to separation anxiety Sadly, German shepherds will sometimes howl when they have separation anxiety. This howling happens when their owners are away from home and can go on for hours. German shepherds with separation anxiety usually exhibit accompanying behaviors such as destructive chewing, pacing, panting, inappropriate elimination, stress, depression, escaping, and more. Separation anxiety is a serious problem that needs to be addressed for the health and wellbeing of the dog. If a dog begins to howl for no apparent reason, especially when accompanied with a behavior change, it could be a signal that they need medical attention. Some signs to watch for include change in appetite, change in bowl habits, licking one area of the body, alienating themselves, becoming needier, avoidance of touch, change in gait, holding the ears back, panting, vomiting, fever, and hiding are all big signals that the dog is in some sort of distress and needs to be examined by a vet. Unleashing their inner wolf Most of the time howling is just a German shepherd channeling their inner wolf and letting some of their ancient lineage out. They enjoy howling and it can be entertaining to listen to them yowl. Howling is a totally normal dog behavior that many breeds enjoy, some more than others. In some cases, howling can be a signal that something more serious is going on. It could be an alert or a sign of distress. In these cases, their body language and the entire situation that is going on at the time must be looked at to determine why they are howling to determine if they need some sort of help. We hope you found this article interesting. As always, please feel free to pass it on to your friends. The amount that they howl depends on the individual dog. Likewise, you can teach them to start as well. So why do German Shepherds howl so much? There are a few reasons why they are getting in touch with their inner wolf. Take a quick glance at some of the most common causes of howling to figure out what has brought on this vocal performance. Howling is a Part of Who They Are Every dog on the planet is descended from wolves, and we all know that wolves how. Making noise is something that comes naturally to them. Howling from boredom could also be combined with other naughty behavior like chewing on things. Wolves also do this in the wild for their pack mates to help them find their way back into their territory. Signaling a Warning As herding dogs, this breed made lots of noise to scare off predators and criminals that came onto their land. Dogs in pain will howl because they need our assistance. Image Credit: GoranH, Pixabay 8. German Shepherd Happiness Some dogs howl just because they are happy. Take comfort in knowing your pup is expressing their joy in such a vocal way. Sirens sound very similar to a dog howling, and your German Shepherd is simply replying to the outside noise. It may not sound similar to you, but dogs are capable of picking up much higher frequencies than we are. German Shepherds are usually on guard at this time, and if they are howling, it is probably because they are trying to signal that something is going on outside. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to stop this behavior. Instead of scolding them, ignore them completely and remain persistent. Doing so lets them know that remaining quiet is the best way to get affection. Image Credit: Happy monkey, Shutterstock 2. Spend More Time with Them If your dog is demanding attention, it might help to be more genuine about your one-on-one time. Go outside and spend an hour playing with them. Give them lots of pats, hugs, and kisses. Counterconditioning Counterconditioning is a practice that tricks your dog into changing the way that they feel while they behave a certain way. For example, dogs that howl whenever someone walks by the house can be counter conditioned by giving them a treat as soon as they spot a person and before they start howling. The dog starts to associate a person walking by with a good feeling, which then makes them less likely to howl. Some breeds are more likely to howl than others. If it truly bothers you, you might think about getting a dog that is less likely to make a lot of noise. However, if you already have a noisy dog, there are ways that you can train them to stop.

It's like adding a new member to your family, a little brother or sister. All French Bulldog Insights French Bulldog Breed Info If you're seeking an adorable companion with a charmingly squashed face, an easygoing personality, and a distinct penchant for lounging on the couch, the French Bulldog could just be your perfect match. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Introducing: Henry! He is an approximately 2 year old American Bully boy weighing 65 pounds. Henry was rescued by police from a serious neglect situation in Ohio. He does not require very much in terms of exercise. Favorite activities: Laying down with a human companion, eating from treat toys such as lick mats and Kongs, and sleeping. Good with cats, dogs, and kids over 6? He has good dog social skills and has been polite with introductions, even when the other dog is not polite! He does not seem very interested in playing with other dogs. He loves everyone so he should be great with kids. He does not soil his crate. He does not like being left out of social situations. He does great overnight in the crate and sleeps well with a dog bed in there. Walks well on a leash? No behavior challenges to note. Any Medical issues? He has some spots missing fur, but it is growing back. His paw pads are unusually deep and therefore hard to keep clean. While walking outside his paws get debris stuck in them. His toe jam needs to be cleaned out regularly or they grow yeast. What would be the best kind of home? He is not an active guy, so he will not make a good hiking buddy. He is not interested in dog toys and only plays in short bursts. These are designer breeds that are bred for a specific purpose. We produce an incredible bernedoodle that displays the qualities of both our champion line Standard Poodles and the Bernese Mountain Dog pedigrees. The advantage of a carefully planned mixed breed is that you get the added advantage of a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor". This process shuffles new combinations of genes that helps to increase longevity and decrease the usual ailments that impact many purebred dogs such as various forms of inherited types of cancer not all cancers have a genetic basis such as small and large cell lymphoma which is usually a result from environmental exposure. The bernedoodles are super healthy and are not as prone to the same issues that Bernese mountain dogs and standard poodles are. As a result, you have a family member for a lot longer and that will live a vibrant and healthy life if properly cared for diet, exercise, and family integration are all important components toward helping the dog to live a long happy life with you.You can see the links above about the qualities of Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs as both are extraordinary breeds in their own right and for many, purebreds of these may be a great option as well. We prefer the Bernedoodle as they get the best of both breeds, incredibly loyal, goofy, smart, playful, intelligent, and has one of the best dog personalities we have seen in a family dog. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats. If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. We will produce about 2 F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodle litters per year for those wanting a more curly coat in their bernedoodles. Premier Bernedoodles love to be with the family and do not do well in enviroments of isolation. Wherever the family is, that's right where they want to be. They are stunning dogs, and you'll likely get alot of attention and people asking you what kind of dog you have. They are beautiful and along with their incredibly gentle personalities, you will have an absolutely stunning dog. They are a perfect companion dog that love to go on walks through the city or hikes in the woods or mountains or a swim at the beach. They love it all and will be at your side the entire time. They don't tend to wander away as they prefer to be with you. They equally love just hanging out with you on the couch watching your favorite movie or watching you reading a book. They really love it all as long as you're a part of it. They are so loyal to the family. Bernedoodle puppies do have energy like most puppies, and this will continue thru about years of age at which time they really mellow out. They are not nervous nor hyper but will need some off leash time where they can really stretch their legs and run. The old motto "a tired puppy is a good puppy" always prevails! Just make sure they have a lot of fresh water and a cool spot to cool off afterward. Due to the the recombination and shuffling of new genetic variations, they do show some variation in their coloration however they also all have a common morphology that tells you it's a bernedoodle. Although we do take deposits on a first come, first pick basis, we will know the puppies well, their personalities, and can help select a puppy that best fits your lifestyle and what you are looking for. We only use Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs to produce our Premier Bernedoodles so that any dog we accept into our Premier Bernedoodle program have passed stringent health tests, display family oriented personalities, and exhibit the best of conformation so that our bernedoodles are absolutely beautiful. Be very cautious when purchasing a purebred or bernedoodle without doing your due diligence as the puppies will always be cute, but will exhibit the personalities of the bloodline used later in life. Therefore, use a reptutable breeder that has invested in the dogs they use for their breeding programs and that raise them as their own family members. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. We are very Type A when it comes to the quality of dogs which makes it more difficult to give referrals. We are always going to be biased and believe that the wait for a Premier Bernedoodle is worth it and you'll be very happy you did! Also you can visit your local humane society and help rescue a dog at the shelter. If you have young kids be sure to get a younger dog from the shelter that can adapt to your family. But if you're looking for a unique new family member, a Premier Bernedoodle will be a true delight. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding. We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. We continue to get lots of praise from those that have purchased our F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodles. Is the Bernedoodle for Everybody? I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. Any of our puppies kept in a permanent kennel situation, on a tether, or the like, will violate the terms and conditions of our puppy contract and will have to render the puppy or dog back to Premier Doodles see puppy contract in link above. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. The good news.We have a Puppy Guide under our tab "Puppy Central" on how to unpack this process so that you can have success. If you put them time in early, they will have this knocked out in a few days. The rule of thumb is to get them outside ALOT.Be sure to purchase two Midwest XL crates can get from our Puppy Store , one for the back door and one next to your bed. The power of meiosis specialized cell division event that occurs in the reproductive organs, ovaries for females and testes for males and crossing over assures that each offspring will be diverse and different and this difference will be noticeable in color and a little bit in behavior. All will be superior, but some will be more playful and others less so, some will mouth more than others, etc. Available Puppies.Check out our "Available Puppies" tab at the top to find out how to get onto our Master List for a future puppy! Life Span Did You Know? They tend to be affectionate and loving dogs that make great family pets. They are even known to make great therapy dogs! Although they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other canine registries. One of the facts about Bernedoodles is that they are true companion dogs. They are cuddly companions that love nothing more than being with their favorite humans. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, Mini Bernedoodles tend to get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Miniature Bernedoodles are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in larger homes as well as apartments. They are sensitive to heat and extreme cold, but do well in most climates. Because they bond so closely with their families and thrive on attention, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time and can develop separation anxiety if you do not work with them early on. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. You can ask about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Mini Bernedoodles are intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. This makes them a highly trainable dog that is a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They can become stubborn if training is not consistent or clear. Although their coat tends to be low-shedding and will range from straight to wavy or curly, the Mini Bernedoodle coat requires some maintenance. Daily brushing is recommended to remove tangles and prevent mats. Professional grooming is recommended every weeks. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep them from growing too long and causing issues. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed help to prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, Mini Bernedoodles are more prone to developing gum disease. Good dental care for dogs early and consistently throughout their life can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Daily tooth brushing, plus cleanings at the vet as needed, is ideal. Although Mini Bernedoodles will be playful and have bursts of energy while playing, they are not high-energy dogs. They tend to sit in a more moderate range. Daily walks plus some playtime throughout the day are usually enough for them. But, they love spending time with you and will likely be up for more activity if you are. They may be smaller dogs, but they also tend to be relatively athletic. When puppies finish growing , you can try higher-impact activities like running, hiking, training for dog sports, and more. Fully-grown Mini Bernedoodles usually stand inches tall. They can range from pounds. F1B and F2 Mini Bernedoodles usually weigh pounds and are on the shorter side of the range. Mini Bernedoodles generally live for years on average. Featured Mini Bernedoodle Article.
For the complete list please see our German Shepherd Breeders listings page. Prices vary depending on where you get your dog and the bloodlines of your new pup. German shepherd puppies are often purchased by people looking for guard dogs, police work or herding. As a result, the demand is high and prices are high as well. If you are looking for a family dog, they are great dogs, but you should be prepared to spend a bit more than you would for a mutt from the pound. That said, GSDs are known for their intelligence, strength and protectiveness, so many people feel that the extra money is worth it. Responsible breeders only breed their dogs when they have health clearances and genetic testing done on both the sire and dam. They also place puppies in homes that they feel will be good owners, and they typically follow up with their puppies throughout their lives. Responsible breeders also charge more for their puppies because they know that the puppies are going to good homes and that the parents have been health tested. You can find a list of responsible breeders in your area by contacting your local German Shepherd Dog Club or searching online. Responsible breeders will also provide you with a health guarantee for the puppy. This guarantee should cover things like genetic conditions, hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. It is important to read the fine print of the guarantee before you buy the puppy to make sure that you are covered in case something happens. Visit Your Nevada German Shepherd Breeder in Person Visiting your breeder in person is very important, and we highly recommend that you do so before you purchase your puppy. This will give you a chance to meet the sire and dam of the litter, as well as the puppies themselves. If possible, try to visit at feeding time. You can also ask to see where the dogs sleep or rest when they are not with their pups. Make sure that all of the dogs appear healthy and happy, without any signs of ill health or malnutrition. All of their food should be fresh, clean water be available at all times, and the kennels or living area should be clean. If you have any questions, the breeder should be happy to answer them. Finding a good breeder is essential if you want a healthy, well-adjusted German Shepherd puppy. Responsible breeders take great pride in their dogs and their puppies, and they are always happy to answer any questions you may have. We hope that this article has been helpful in your search for the perfect GSD pup. A good breeder will be happy to provide you with the names and phone numbers of previous buyers. The best way to find out if a breeder is responsible is to talk to their previous customers. References will give you a look into what you can expect from the breeder, and they will give you a chance to ask questions that might have been missed during your initial phone or in-person interview. Breeders should be happy to answer any of your questions, so if they are reluctant to provide references, it may be a sign that there is something wrong. This will give you a chance to ask them questions about their experience with the breeder, and it will help you get a better idea of what to expect if you purchase a puppy from them. All of the people that you talk to should have nothing but good things to say about the breeder. If anyone has had any negative experiences, the breeder should be willing to work on making things right. However, if most or all of their reviews are negative, it might be a sign that something is seriously wrong. If you find an excellent breeder, they will be happy to introduce you to past customers so that you can get all your questions answered. If the breeder is reluctant to do so, it may be because there are issues with their operation. Good breeders will always take their dogs to the veterinarian when they are sick or injured, and they will also have regular check-ups. It is important to ask the breeder about their relationship with their veterinarian. Signs that a breeder is unethical include: Breeding unhealthy dogs. Puppy pads Create a Schedule German Shepherd pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. Still, it would be best to prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep. Moderate Training German Shepherds are highly trainable. It simply means they respond well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. Adoption Process Mini Goldendoodle Goldendoodles are mixes between Golden Retrievers and Poodles that are very affectionate, playful, and all around a very friendly dog. They are known to be a great breed for novice owners, but loved by experienced pet owners as well, as they are fairly easy to groom and get along well with children and other dogs. Highly intelligent, they are usually easy to train and have a high energy level that requires regular exercise. They are typically larger dogs that do not adapt well to apartment style living but would instead prefer to have a larger area to play, indoors or outdoors. This breed does not shed much which can make them great dogs for owners with allergies, but this requires them to be groomed regularly. Goldendoodles have a high sensitivity level but are generally friendly around strangers. They are gentle dogs that are highly social and not great as guard dogs or watch dogs but have done well in roles such as therapy dogs or other service dogs. These dogs do best when they are around the people they love and should not be kept outside or in an outdoor kennel; they will experience separation anxiety when kept away from their owners for long periods of time. When left for a while, they do best to be kept in a kennel temporarily, and their destructive behaviors can be avoided by providing them with toys to chew on and by having a radio playing in the background. Miniature Goldendoodles are usually a mix between Miniature or Toy Poodles crossed with a Golden Retriever, which usually results in a dog that is 13 to 20 inches tall and weighs on average 15 to 35 pounds. These sizes, however, can vary greatly depending on the size of the parents for each puppy. They are generally healthy dogs but, like all breeds, can be prone to certain conditions. This breed has a desire to please and are known for developing affectionate bonds with their owners which makes them an excellent breed for owners excited to play with them. The Best Name for Your New Best Friend How to Choose a Great Name for Your Labradoodle If you are fully prepared to bring your Labradoodle home, or have already brought it home and are starting to search for names, there are a couple of considerations to take into account. Think about syllable counts, personal preferences, pronunciation, and more. Australian Labradoodles are a different breed the Labradoodles although similar! Pick a Two-Syllable Name Choosing a two-syllable name for your Labradoodle is important because dogs respond best to two-syllable words. If you plan on training your Labradoodle puppy, which is highly recommended for all dog owners to do, limiting your options to a two-syllable or even three-syllable name is a good idea. A dog that is not trained, while unlikely to get a one-syllable name mixed up with a similar sounding one-syllable command, will become rowdy and difficult to control. This makes dogs, especially Labradoodles, get into trouble and even become antisocial in some cases. Choose a Name You Can Easily Pronounce An easily pronounceable dog name is the best option for Labradoodle so that you can properly pronounce it every time. Furthermore, those around you can easily understand the name of your dog. If you do not fluently speak a second language, it is best to avoid foreign language names, including those with accents, unique inflections, or double meanings in English. We tend to yell commands to our dogs when we are out in public in a large and spacious place such as a grassy park, beach, dog park , or even in a big backyard or on a sprawling farm property. If you and your family are an English-speaking family with English as your first language, it is recommended to speak English to your Labradoodle. Labradoodles are a highly sensitive, astute breed and can pick up changes in your voice, tone, volume, and even how you pronounce command and name accents. We have both been trainers and competitors since the s, and have put dozens of titles on our dogs over the years, competing here in the United States and abroad. We bred our first German Boxer litter in .Our kennel and home are located on acres in the heart of Wisconsin farm country. The term "German Boxer" does not simply refer to the country of origin for our dogs. It is the official name of the breed in all FCI countries in Europe. Sometimes you will hear people in North America call a Boxer that has been imported from a European country other than Germany a "European Boxer", or a "Euro Boxer," but those are just made up names, and those Boxers are in fact, "German Boxers" by name in registration with the FCI. To keep the breed's working qualities intact, German breeders since the early s have used Schutzhund to determine an indivual dog's suitability for breeding. Consisting of tests of tracking, obedience and protection work, it is still used in Germany as a breeding criteria today. Additional breeding requirements were developed over the years, including evaluations for structure and temperament, and a number of health guidelines. Dogs that did not meet these breeding requirements were eliminated from the breeding pool. What has resulted is a dog that has a high level of trainability along with athleticism, outstanding character, and superior health. These are the things that brought us to the German Boxer. But it was not an easy or quick trip. There are several reasons why obtaining good German Boxers is a difficult task. First, there are so few of them to begin with. Consider that there are only about 2, of them registered each year in Germany. In comparison, some 25, German Shepherds are registered annually in Germany. Secondly, German Boxers are not usually kept as kennel dogs by their owners. They are family dogs and so it is difficult for people to part with them, especially when they are adults. Lastly, the United States is a long way from Germany, and it was difficult to get breeders that would be willing to send a dog or puppy so far away, when they did not know us, and when they never thought they would see the dog again. They preferred to see their dogs and puppies with people they knew and trusted, and within driving distance of them. So we started to make trips to Germany and Europe. We went to European Boxer competitions and to training clubs, and we got to meet breeders and competitors. We became very good friends with some of them, and slowly, over many years, we gained access to some truly wonderful dogs through them. Dogs that were one out of a thousand. After 20 years, we now have the genetics and the bloodlines to create really great working German Boxers, right here at home in the United States. And that's really important, because currently, we see a trend towards inferior structure, particularly in head type , and in working ability, evolving in the breed in Europe. Schutzhund and Protection Training and the Family Boxer When you look through our site, you will see many photos and videos of our German Boxers engaged in schuthund work and protection training. Learn more about Dante - Click Here for additional information History of the German Boxer Dog While there are many theories as to the origin of the boxer, the breed is said to have reached its perfection in Germany within the past century. Most believe that the boxer comes from European line of dogs that have been around since the 16th century. Some evidence suggests that the boxer is one of the many descendants of the old fighting dog found in the high valleys of Tibet. It is also accepted that this breed is a cousin to just about all breeds within the bulldog type. The Dogue de Bordeaux of France is a breed that is similar in appearance and size to the old Tibetan Mastiff. The Bouldogue de Mida found in the south of France was apparently developed from the Dogue de Bordeaux, and it shares many of the same characteristics of the boxer. While it is generally believed that all the European breeds previously mentioned are in some way related to the boxer, this favorite breed of Germany was developed to retain all of its older qualities with a more attractive look. Other sources claim that the boxer was derived from two breeds of dog found in central Europe that no longer exist: the Danziger bullenbaiser and the Brabenter bullenbaiser. In this account, it is believed that in the s German hunters tried to create a new breed by crossing the bullenbaisers with mastiff-type dogs and bulldogs. This resulted in a tough yet agile dog that featured a streamlined body and a strong grip. This origin states that by , the new breed, called the boxer, had been established. The exact origin of the name boxer is rather obscure, but it may have taken from the German boxl. In addition to being related to the Bulldog, it is said that the boxer is also influenced by a strain of terrier. Others think that there is reason to believe that English Bulldogs were imported into Germany at one time, as evidenced by Reinagle's Bulldog, which was done in .This work of art depicts a bulldog that is very similar in appearance to the boxer. One of the first dogs to be used in military and police work, the boxer became better known as a family pet and show dog by the s.
