The barking and excitement is continually reinforced, and will get worse and worse. So you need to act, preferably sooner rather than later. Whilst you can reward good behavior when you are there, you cannot control what passers by do, or how your dog reacts to them when you are out of sight. Although you might feel annoyed to hear there is no quick fix, you should feel pleased that you can regain control of the situation through another means.
