Remember, this is just an estimate. By Tom Massey Mar 02, Adopting a golden retriever is one of the best decisions you can make. These loving dogs are constantly praised for their gentle and calm, yet playful nature, making them perfect dogs for all walks of life and types of families. So when you do finally bring your Golden Retriever puppy home, you want to do everything you can to give them a long and healthy life for years to come. This is a wide range, so keep in mind that the weight of your Retriever will vary depending on genetic factors and sex. For example, female Golden Retrievers will weigh closer to 55 pounds while Golden Retriever males are heavier and will weigh closer to 75 pounds. Females also typically reach their full size by their first birthday, while males may continue growing through their second year. You can usually tell the size males and females will be based on what their parents look like, which is why Snowy Pines encourages meeting the parents or browsing through their photos and biographies online. Then, calculate 1. What to Expect: This age is crucial for mother-puppy bonding since he will depend on his mother for food, cleaning, and socialization. Image Source Weeks months Golden Retriever Male Weight: Between 8 to 12 weeks, your male puppy will average between 10 to 22 pounds. Golden Retriever Female Weight: Although females will grow to be smaller than males, they are typically around the same weight at this age group. The puppies become very playful, curious, and discover their voices little by little. Introductory training like house training is essential. Socialization is also important, which is why Snowy Pines ensures that all puppies stay with their littermates until adoption. For female puppies, 6 months is a little over the halfway point to their full-size, and males are essentially smaller versions of their adult bodies. Remember, at this age, you can multiply by two to determine their adult weight! What to Expect: Socialization is still crucial at this age, and more intense training can also begin. The puppy should also be kept in happy and safe environments, as any exposure to something fearful at this age may impact him long-term. This is entirely normal: Think of your puppy as a teenager who is going through adolescence and waiting for the rest of his body to catch up. They may get territorial and challenge you and other pets for dominance. Most Golden Retrievers will be fully grown by 24 months old, although this varies. Golden Retriever Female Weight: In most cases, females are finished growing before 16 to 24 months. Whatever their nature is like at the to month mark is likely what it will be throughout their adult life. They are loyal, friendly, and calm, making them the perfect companion for small and large families alike. However, Goldens are susceptible to certain illnesses and diseases that are common in bigger breeds that are typically caused by overfeeding, stunted or accelerated growth, and genetic issues. One of the most common diseases that goldens experience is Osteochondritis dissecans OCD. OCD is a developmental disease that affects large-breed dogs because of the accelerated growth they experience. It is an inflammatory condition that causes abnormal cartilage development on the end of a bone in the joint. This can lead to joint problems like arthritis and hip dysplasia which commonly appears in the elbow, hip, and knee. Image Source The good news is that, although larger breeds like golden retrievers are prone to joint issues like this, you may be able to help prevent it through proper practice. OCD is a specific disease that is more common in dogs that receive too much energy and calcium in their diets. Other common factors are genetics, rapid growth, and hormonal factors. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, and all that extra weight can leave your puppy with skeletal abnormalities that put too much weight on joints. Another way to avoid accidentally stunted or accelerated growth is to ensure your golden retriever puppy is getting fed appropriately and receiving the right amount of calories. Image Source Months Between 2 and 4 months old, your puppy should eat 4 times per day with 2 ounces per meal. This will add up to 7 to 9 ounces per day, depending on how much he willingly eats. Keep him on puppy food through his first year before switching to young adult food. They must receive regular exercise every day. However, this depends on their age. As previously covered, the more your puppy grows, the more susceptible to common diseases like joint problems. Breeders with years of experience, like the team at Snowy Pines, work hard to keep pure bloodlines so that all of the parents and their litters are as healthy as they can be, which helps guarantee a lifetime full of happiness without any issue. Share on. Not all goldens will grow to the same size and at the same rate. The size of the parents is always a good indicator of whether your dog will be above or below average in size. However, while natural variation is nothing to worry about, stunted growth or accelerated growth is. If a golden retriever puppy is malnourished or suffering from an unidentified medical condition usually hookworm or ringworm , their natural growth can be compromised. This can lead to serious medical issues in later life, as it can leave them with weak bones, weak muscles, and a weak immune system, as well as a tendency to develop both skin and digestive issues. Growing too quickly, largely as a result of overfeeding, can also pose a major health risk. As well as leading to obesity, carrying too much weight at the development stage can leave your golden retriever with skeletal abnormalities, hip dysplasia, and osteochondrosis , a condition that affects the joints. With these tips, you will help fight off those genetic health disorders as well. Appropriate Diet Start off by speaking to your vet for guidance on foods to use for the different life stages. At the very least, you will need a nutritionally complete and balanced diet made for large breeds. Good food will help your pup gain the right amount of weight, look healthy, and have enough energy. Proper exercise will build their muscle and bone strength, prevent obesity, increase their agility, stop destructive behavior, and help them release pent-up energy. Vaccines will help to prevent infectious diseases such as hepatitis, parvovirus, rabies, and distemper, all of which could affect the growth and overall health of your puppy. This will be a plus for her overall health. It would also be great to have your vet do routine health checks on your puppy. This way, no issue will go unnoticed, and treatment can be administered early for better outcomes. A shiny coat and bright eyes are a plus. Alternatively, if you notice rapid weight gain or loss, unusual bumps and lumps on their skin, digestive issues, changes in behavior, and visual or hearing complications, take your dog to the vet right away. Compared to other breeds, Golden Retrievers, especially females, grow pretty quickly. Males could take up to 18 months to achieve the same milestone. However, both will still need an additional year to fill out the chest fully. Adult height, on the other hand, will be reached between 9 and 12 months. As always, females will get there a bit faster than males. You can get a rough idea of how big your golden retriever will grow by first studying the parents. Take note of the size that both of the parents and previous litters have had. Rarely will a puppy grow larger than its parents, so the measurements you gather will give you a better idea of how tall and heavy your golden retriever will get. Full-grown, healthy, male golden retrievers have a height of between 22 and 24 inches while the females are 20 to 22 inches tall. In terms of height and body structure, the Canadian golden retriever has no rival. Spaying and neutering specifically affect the development of bones and also ligament and tendon strength. In fact, some studies report higher incidences of cranial cruciate ligament tears and hip dysplasia among golden retrievers that went through this procedure. Therefore, consult your vet when deciding if and when to spay or neuter your dog. The weight of your golden retriever is a good indication of their healthy development. While male and female Goldens will have different weights and show goldens tend to be heavier than working goldens, overall, they should be hitting the weights listed in the growth and weight chart above. If your dog is not hitting these milestones, consult your vet about malnutrition, possibly caused by worms, and excessive golden retriever growth, which is often the result of overfeeding. If you feel like your pooch is missing any of them, again, it is time to consult your vet. In general, good nutrition and a loving home is a recipe for a happy and healthy golden retriever. If you want to know more about your golden retriever, you can do a DNA test, too. You can choose one of the tests below:.

They do well in apartments as well as larger homes. However, as a brachycephalic breed, they are extra sensitive to heat and also sensitive to the cold. They also do not like being left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a Frenchie Mix to also be a highly adaptable dog. The other parent will introduce their own traits and some potential quirks, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. They could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, or they could inherit some or all of them. They can also be prone to allergies, have sensitive skin, and also a sensitive stomach. Good breeding practices will make a huge difference. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Although French Bulldogs can sometimes be stubborn, they are eager to please and tend to be easy to train. As a small dog breed, a Frenchie Mix is more prone to developing dental diseases later in life. This makes good, consistent dental care for dogs even more important for them. Daily brushing with a dog-friendly toothpaste or using an enzyme toothpaste paired with cleanings at the vet when needed is ideal. Frenchies are known couch potato dogs that are happy to lay back, relax, and cuddle with you. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this affectionate little dog. Even though they like to relax, they also like to play and will be energetic when they do. They can also be athletic and compete in dog sports. As a brachycephalic breed, you do need to be careful of overexertion and overheating. But, there are plenty of ways to safely exercise flat-faced dogs to make sure your French Bulldog Mix gets enough exercise. If the other parent breed is also a low-energy breed, then you can expect something similar from a Frenchie Mix. If the other parent breed requires more activity, then you will need to be prepared for the potential of a higher energy dog. Fully-grown Frenchies usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Arkansas? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. These puppies can take on characteristics from both breeds, creating a unique combination of traits. A well-socialized and trained dog, regardless of its breed or mix, can make a great companion. These puppies are gentle, loving and affectionate. They are a good family dog and do well with children. The breed is also intelligent, docile and relatively easy to train. While puppies may be very energetic, adult Frenchies are relatively calm and have moderate exercise needs. That makes them an excellent choice for apartments and for owners who are unable to provide vigorous exercise. The dog bonds with owners and can get depressed if left alone for long periods. Bored or lonely pups can also chew or become destructive. This loving French Bulldog puppy has a sweet disposition and will make a fabulous family pet. She will warm your heart with her love for snuggling and having her belly rubbed. This cutie is raised with children and ready for tons of fun. She is ACA registered, vet checked, vaccinated, wormed and comes with a 1 year genetic health guarantee. Her momma is Crystal.
We rescued this bunch from a shelter, and we think they might be a couple of imposters in the litter. Whatever the case, the puppies are wonderful and as cute as they come. We're not exactly sure of the breed mixes in the pups, but we see lab, shepherd, retriever and you name it. They are well socialized with people and other dogs, and are ready for their forever homes. NOTE: We're only guessing the breed mixes in these puppies, there are no guarantees! He is a beautiful mix of shepherd, Rhodesian Ridgeback and perhaps even some boxer in him. He is so intelligent, affectionate and eager to please. Copper is a willing learner and needs his own family so he can shine. He is a shepherd mix that loves people. He was the first of his litter to make eye contact and easily became a favorite among the human visitors. He looks up at you with those soulful eyes and you are putty in his paws. His gentle, loving, confident personality is so endearing. He has the most beautiful coloring and will probably be the size of a Retriever when grown. He is always up for a good romp but then it's nap time and nothing stops him from taking a good snooze. Jeremy is well socialized and loves to be part of your every day life. He watches and learns quickly. He has a kicked back attitude and has no tendencies to be anxious or worried. Jesse has the best attributes of both the Retriever and Shepherd. He's an awesome, handsome boy that gets along very well with his littermates and the older dogs in his household. She aims to please and give you the most adoring look when she is with her human companion. Skittles is a confident, stable, and lovable puppy. Skittles is on the athletic side. She may be a Dutch Shepherd and Labrador mix probably in the middle weight range of pounds full grown. She is 10 weeks old, even-tempered, easy to please, happy puppy. She is well socialized and loves her littermates as well as humans. She enjoys the neighbor children that come over to play with her. She always has the biggest smile on her face when she is playing with them. She may be mixed with German Shepherd and Rhodesian Ridgeback. She has so much to give a family whether they have children or just an individual. Dana possesses so many endearing qualities. She looks to have Golden and Labrador Retriever in her. Her back and tail hair is becoming very wavy and so cute. She is starting to get some black hair weaved amongst the blond hair. As with her siblings, she loves people. She is affectionate, playful and a quick learner. Greta Female 2. Have you ever dreamed of a White German Shepherd???? Animal Control Officers said she was protecting the old dog who was sick. Greta was in the shelter for over two months until she caught the eye of Golden State German Shepherd Rescue. We went in to pick up another pup and decided to evaluate this beautiful girl and she did great on her evaluation. She even temp tested well with kitties so we think with proper introduction and supervision, she will be able to co-habitate with felines. Every time her foster mom opens the car door, Greta is ready to go! And she loves to go on long walks. During her stay at the shelter, they would take her out on her doggy day and she would walk over two miles!!! Greta is extremely comfortable with people of all ages. She is particulary fond of young kids as she watched her foster mom's young son and nephew very attentively while they were on the trampoline. Greta never left their side nor took her eye off them. We don't know why Greta wasn't snatched up while she was in the shelter. She is a lovely girl with extraordinary charm and personality. More Added November 10, .The Golden Shepherd tends to be a friendly, energetic, and affectionate dog that is loyal to their family and tends to be protective of them. Although they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, and more. A Golden Shepherd tends to bring the all-around friendly personality of the Golden Retriever and the intelligence and devotion of the German Shepherd into one dog. They love their families and tend to get along with everyone including children. These dogs are not necessarily suspicious of strangers, but they are alert and will tend to bark if they see something they feel you need to know about. Golden Shepherds are moderately adaptable dogs. Because they are high-energy, they tend to do better in homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living as long as plenty of time is dedicated to giving them the daily exercise they need. They tend to do well in most climates. But, as with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. Because Golden Shepherds are devoted to their families and thrive on spending time with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A mixed-breed dog can inherit the potential health issues common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. As a larger, barrel-chested dog breed, the Golden Shepherd, like their parent breeds, is also at a higher risk for bloat. The Golden Shepherd is a highly trainable dog breed. They are intelligent, eager to please, and pick up on things quickly. This makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Puppy training classes can still be a great idea because they offer opportunities to socialize a puppy while also strengthening your bond with them. The Golden Shepherd will have a thick double-coat that sheds moderately year-round and more heavily twice a year as seasons change. A quick daily brushing, especially during seasonal shedding sessions, will help remove loose fur to make your dog more comfortable and also help keep more fur contained to a brush instead of everywhere else. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Monthly nail trims are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long or causing issues. Plus, if anything is starting to happen, you can get the vet before it gets more serious. Because many dog owners overlook this, gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is ideal. The Golden Shepherd comes from two high-energy dogs, so they require a lot of daily exercise to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime and time to run are the minimum. But, a Golden Shepherd will likely be up for more activity if you are. A trip to the dog park for some off-leash time, playing frisbee or chasing a ball, hiking, swimming, running, and more can all help this dog expend some extra energy. You want to keep their activity low-impact as they are still growing, but once they finish growing, try different activities to see what you both love doing together. You could even try training them for dog sports! A fully-grown Golden Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. A Golden Shepherd generally lives for years. Share 0 Shares Finding the right breeder for your Golden Retriever is important. You might be shopping for pet-quality puppies, but most AKC-registered breeders also sell pet-quality dogs out of each litter. This means that there is no reason not to buy from a breeder that is AKC-recognized to ensure that you get a healthy dog that will be free of genetic flaws. In rare instances, there are breeders who intentionally create a litter of pet-quality puppies each year. You might pay less for these dogs, but you will need to make sure that the breeder is still doing all the right genetic testing and care for the litter of puppies before and after they have arrived. Getting a Golden Retriever puppy is exciting, and you will want to be sure that none of the fun is taken out of the process by working with a poor-quality breeder. You will just need to use this guide to help you to track down the right breeder for your needs. Remember that there are different types of Golden Retrievers , and you might need to verify that the breeder you are interested in has the dogs that you are looking for. You can never ask too many questions of the breeders that you are planning to get a puppy from as this is a very important decision. Find a trainer near you today! We help your dog become a valued companion and beloved member of the family. Read what our customers have to say and then give us a call! I love Dog Training Elite! We recently finished our 6 private lessons and have moved on to our 12 group lessons. I LOVE that she listens because we've bonded through our training and not because I've bribed her with treats. Both Malancy and Brad have been amazing to work with and the training has been so consistent. We're new to group lessons, but it's already been great to take what we've learned at home and now apply it in a group setting with other dogs and dog parents going through the same program. DTE really wants you and your dog to bond and succeed. They're super professional, supportive, and non-judgmental. I also love how the training I've been doing with our dog is translating into her also respecting and obeying my husband and kids with the same commands and praise. At first, it sounded like a lot of money to me to pay for dog training, but I promise you it's worth every penny. I love knowing that by the time we fully graduate from training if not sooner , we're going to be able to take Pepper anywhere dogs are allowed without having to worry about her or fight with her to get her to obey. If we decide to go the therapy dog route after completing our initial training, I'll definitely be sticking with DTE for that training as well. He made training simple and easy to understand and was available anytime I had questions or concerns. My beautiful little Sheltie has blossomed since training began last spring. We have a ways to go to become a bit more social, but the change in my dog and in her level of confidence is remarkable! Thanks to Jason and to Dog Training Elite. I would recommend you to anyone! They have taken our 1-year old Great Dane and have helped us transform her into the best, most well behaved dog I have ever owned. Eric, Jason, and Parker are pure professionals. Thanks to them the same out-of-control Great Dane is working to become the service dog that I need. I had Parker literally meet me and my anxious kids the day after we brought our 8 week old puppy home to TN on an airplane. Parker got us set off on the right start and helped alleviate so much of our anxiety about training our first dog. Eric then helped us during dog training build the skills that we needed to be successful at home. I loved the in-home training so that we could focus on personalizing our training and getting our pup used to the daily routine of our busy home. Plus my kids could also get trained since they were the ones who needed to learn how to be consistent and clear with the commands. Here we are at 5 months old and our puppy is such a joy to have in our home - all thanks to Parker and Eric, our dog whisperers. I feel so much more confident as an owner and have no problems taking him out in public. One of my favorite things about Parker and Eric is their strong but fair approach. This training was so worth it! Highly recommend.

For this reason, finding them in Colorado is quite easy. Many different breeders specialize in this breed, enabling you to choose the best one for your budget and needs. Here are eight of the most active breeders in the state. Of course, be sure to do your own research before purchasing any puppy. They strive to raise dogs with sharp intelligence and high trainability. All their dogs receive health clearances before being bred, ensuring that their puppies are healthy and less prone to genetic conditions. They do not breed for the show ring, which makes their dogs a bit cheaper than others. However, they do focus on temperament and health, as these two factors are essential for companion animals. Their dogs do compete in field trials and other hunting tests. They also breed gun dogs. All their puppies are put through a complete socialization program so they are friendly and ready for their new homes. They also provide a guarantee on their puppies that is similar to that of many other breeders. Their foundational adults are free from hereditary problems, and their puppies have a health guarantee. Besides Labrador Retrievers, they also produce Goldendoodles and other similar family dogs. They only breed dogs that have several generations of healthy ancestors, helping ensure that their puppies are healthy. All their breeding dogs are tested for common genetic conditions. Their kennel is licensed by the Colorado State Department of Agriculture. They have been breeding dogs since , far longer than most kennels out there. They have produced championship dogs in both America and internationally. While they focus on showing dogs, they do strive to produce dogs that make good family pets too. They produce three lab colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. Their dogs actively compete in AKC shows, and they genetically test all their dogs before breeding. They have four children, so their dogs are well-socialized with children at the very least. Their breeding dogs have their OFA certifications and undergo yearly eye exams. While their Labradors are show dogs, they strive to produce pet-quality dogs too. Summary The Labrador Retriever is an incredibly popular breed. Dogs from these places can inherit various health problems and genetic conditions due to the disregard for proper breeding standards. Always seek out high-quality breeders who take care of their dogs, both before and after breeding. It can be difficult for an owner to be certain, so it can be wise to take the dam and pups to the vet within about six hours. The vet can also check for cleft palates and inform you of options available see article on cleft palates —these pups are worth saving , but if you are pretty sure and experienced enough to know the pups are all out, it is best to leave the dam at home, as every time you take her out, and to the vet, you risk bringing home a virus. Normally after whelping she will stop shivering and panting, clean her pups and herself and settle down to feed her pups…. If all seems normal, I just call my vet and let him know what has happened. Take the dam out to relieve herself, and give her some fluids. Chicken broth or Mamalac are good. I give chicken broth, chicken and rice for first meal. Freshen her up with a sponge bath and put nice clean bedding down for her and her new family. If you are using a heating pad it is extremely important that it is enclosed securely in padding so a pup cannot get caught down there under the bedding…. Some new moms try to bury their pups. My whelping box has a wooden bottom, and the heating pad goes UNDER the box, under the plywood floor; this makes a nice radiant heated whelping box floor. If it is black call your vet. Discharge lasts for about a week, slowly turning clearer. If it continues, or develops a foul odor, call the vet. Some dams spot blood for a week or two. If the dam is a new mother, and unsure, make her nurse as the nursing will trigger the release of hormones into her bloodstream, which will help encourage her mothering instincts meaning the more the dam nurses, the more loving she becomes Full supervision is recommended until she has accepted the fact that she is a loving mom. For some breeds, like the giant and clumsy breeds, pups cannot go with the dams for a week or two, but must go in an incubator and be put with the dam every two to four hours. Check your breed. I personally sleep next to my dam and puppies for a few nights, to ensure she does not roll on a puppy, or a puppy does not get out of the bunch and get chilled, etc…. They are VERY susceptible to cold. Make sure there are NO drafts. I leave a baby monitor on, and if a puppy is crying more than usual, I go to see why. Sometimes a puppy will latch on so tightly to the dam that he gets dragged out of the box, sometimes he is lost in the blankets. I make large pillow-like cases from sheets to contain the blankets, so that the puppies cannot get lost in the folds. Your whelping box should have guardrails to help protect the puppies that crawl behind the dam from suffocation and squishing. They need and get constant care from the dam; they cannot even relieve themselves without her stimulation…. She will keep the whelping box very clean for the first couple weeks up to three weeks. Then it is your job.It is wise to weigh the pups twice daily for the first week, and once a day after that. My goal is for pups to start gaining right away, and not have that drop. Feed the dam three times daily three times normal amount of food or more. Check her milk glands twice daily for mastitis swollen, hard teats. If you notice an excess of milk, she will become uncomfortable and restless. This can be relieved by squeezing the teat; draining some milk will reduce the pressure. If you fail to relieve pressure, call your vet. Milk fever is serious, and talked about on the whelping page, as it can come before puppies, but is normally more common when milk is being produced. Some dams need extra calcium. Eyes should open on day 8 to 13 never attempt to open the eyes. Ears should open on day 13 to .Change the bedding in the box several times per day, but do not change the paper often keep it smelling like a toilet and keep the bed smelling like a fresh bed… The puppies will be paper trained by 3 weeks…. By 4 weeks, you will need to expand their home again to include a play area. At three weeks, their teeth are developing. Some large breeds are ready to try soft food and toys. They can lap water and Mamalac. Slowly add soaked puppy kibble. For smaller breeds of dogs, they do not need food till 4 or 5 weeks old. Also, all litters are different. A litter of eight puppies will need food sooner than a litter of three puppies, even if just to give the dam a break. If the Dam is feeding the pups, there is no crying and they are content, then do not rush weaning. Now the Fun Begins. So you are going to whelp a litter and you have your whelping box and stack of old rags all ready to go. The litter comes as planned and everything looks good. You feel a little sorry for the pups and decide to use some of your old rags for the pups to sleep on. After all, its a lot more comfortable to sleep on an old towel than the hard ground of the whelping box. The next morning, you come into the room to find a dead pup that is either under the towel or blanket or tangled in the old rag. This all could have been prevented if you had wiped your whelping box out with the rags before going to bed and then ripped up old newspaper and left the pups with the paper rather than the blanket or rags. Take it from someone who has learned the hard way: rags are for cleaning, blankets are for your bed, and newspaper or wood chips are for whelping boxes or whelping rooms. I look at old rags as puppy death traps. They crawl in them when they scoot around the whelping box, get tangled like you see below, and then either die. A pup can get weak and die overnight if it does not eat or if it gets pushed off to the side and gets cold. This is a 2-day old pup that got lucky. Maybe that's what I will name it. I forgot to train my employee to take all rags out of the whelping box. This pup got tangled and was on its way to dying when I found it at 7AM. It had been tangled up all night and was laying under the side rail of the whelping box. It was too weak to suck and the only thing that saved it was several bottle feedings with my homemade puppy formula. When you have weak pups, I have found that a human bottle like the one above with a lot of pin holes in the nipple allows the pups to suck and get nourishment. Sometimes pups are too weak to suck milk from their mother, but they can suck and get milk from this bottle because it takes less energy. The formula I use has 11 calories per cc. I also like the bottle rather than tube feeding for beginners. It's easy to put too much formula in a sick pup. If they puke and then inhale, they get formula in their lungs. That spells a dead pup. So when in doubt, bottle feed your babies. It takes a little longer but it's the safest way to do it. Out of many provisions offered to your puppy, the primary one is bedding. If your pet is expecting, then it is must for you to arrange whelping box for her. In this article, I will throw light on the puppy bedding along with ideas and tips of whelping box bedding so that your beloved pet enjoys the smooth stay. What to use for Puppy bedding? To make the bedding of your puppy comfortable and long-lasting, you should know how to arrange it properly. Make sure the puppy bed should be spacious, sturdy and comfortable to clean. You arrange the bedding for your puppy to rest and sleep. Sometimes your puppy chews the bed or pulls out the stuff of the bed. So to get rid of this problem you should buy foundations of sturdy and durable fabric so that they cannot quickly chew the bed. The puppy bedding material should be worthy so that your puppy can enjoy its activities. Place crate mats and blankets for your puppy so that the feeling of warmth can be cherished by your pet. You can choose best puppy bed from the market or through online by your preference. You can go for vet bedding too which serve as the perfect sleeping surface for your puppy. It is made up of synthetic fleece fabric which is washable and long-lasting. Organize some pet toys for your puppy so that your pooch can experience some fun activities in the bed. You can also keep food and water dishes for your pet near to the bed so that all essential requirements can be met in one common place. All these facilities will make your puppy bedding a whole place to enjoy. According to the circumstances, your pet requirements changes. In case your female dog is about to deliver the pups then you have to arrange a whelping box for her. After discussing puppy bedding now, I will make you familiar with the whelping box bedding ideas. It is vital for you to take care of bedding in whelping box so that your pet experience the feeling of security. Things to consider for Bedding of a Dog Whelping Box For bedding a dog whelping box, you can make use of wood, rubber-backed rugs, black stall mats and much more. There are lots of options of bedding for whelping. Choose the box that is safe and secure for your puppies and can be cleaned easily. The bedding should be spacious so that your female dog and her pups can lie down comfortably. Straw and wood shavings should be avoided for newborn babies. When your puppies turn into one month old, then you can make use of wood shavings. If you prefer the cheap and disposable bed, then newspaper and puppy pads will satisfy your desire. In this type of bedding, your puppies will not get twisted. You can use towels, sheets, and blankets for bedding your puppies when they start moving here and there. Make sure that the bedding material should possess body-heat retention level. The bedding should be such that it can absorb body fluids and urine properly. It is essential to keep the bedding dry. All these points are essential to be pondered for bedding in a whelping box. Every day it is must to change the bedding several times to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. Keep the bedding warm for your puppies. Following the size, age and breed of your pet along with many other extra facilities you can choose the bedding for your whelping box. The sleeping and the potty area should be separated from your pet. The requirements of the whelping box will change with age and time. As your puppies grow with time, then you have to arrange all the things accordingly. Make proper planning so that your pet and puppies enjoy the comfortable and pleasant stay. This entry was posted in Ideas. Bookmark the permalink. Greg Mayes. Bedding should provide comfort for mom and babies. It must absorb urine and other body fluids to keep everyone dry, and the bedding should provide some level of body-heat retention. The "best" bedding for a litter of pups depends on age, size and occasional extra needs. Most pups will live in a whelping box until it can see and walk and explore, and will gravitate to it for most of the eight weeks or more that they're in group as a litter. The box size will vary according to the size of the breeds involved, but they should be tall enough to keep the pups confined for several weeks. You can add an exercise pen or use pet gates or suitable barricades to contain the curious babies. The floor of the whelping box should be solid and waterproof. If the box is not waterproof, find a bottom liner that is rubber, like a floor mat or carpet runner. You should consider all options and select materials that match needs at specific times during your puppy-rearing experience. Shredded newspaper is probably the most common bedding used by breeders. It provides cover, but it doesn't limit the puppies' mobility. Newspaper is available and inexpensive, but the ink can rub off on the puppies. If you live near a printing press, try to get end rolls, which are clean but not cut. Call to find out when these are available, because they are free of charge and free of ink. These items are warm and comfortable for the dogs, but be sure the pups are old enough to maneuver through these items before using them -- a trapped puppy could be injured or suffocate. This might be your bedding of choice if the whelping box is in a drafty area. The cloth items require laundering, which adds a chore to your list. Some breeders like wood shavings because they absorb the fluids and help with odor control, and many like puppy pads that are available at pet supply stores. The pads can get expensive, and an alternative is purchasing paper bed pads from a human health supply store. During this period, the puppies will need secure footing to help the balance. Rubber padding under paper or cloth bedding helps the pups progress. At this time, some breeders introduce the topic of house-training and select a section of the whelping box to be used for this purpose. Some line the potty area with a different material than the sleeping area of the box. Sand, wood chips or even flat-laid newspaper are good choices. Healthy dogs won't sleep in a soiled area, and many puppies learn quickly where to pee and poo. Regardless of what kind of bedding you choose, be prepared to change it several times each day. People love the hypoallergenic coats of Saint Berdoodles, which are usually low-shedding or non-shedding. Saint Berdoodles have wonderful temperaments and are usually great with kids. Saint Berdoodles have hybrid vigor, which results from crossing two purebred dogs. Hybrid vigor typically results in a healthier offspring, and Saint Berdoodles have a much longer life expectancy than a purebred Saint Bernard. Purebred St Bernards usually live years; whereas Saint Berdoodles are usually expected to live years. Anyone who has owned and loved a Saint Bernard might wonder why anyone would get a Saint Berdoodle instead. There's a seven-fold answer for why Saint Berdoodles win the battle for many families. St Bernard vs St Berdoodle Hypoallergenic: St Berdoodles usually have low-to-non shedding coats like poodles and are typically far better for people with allergies than a purebred Saint Bernard, which sheds its coat. Health: Hybrid vigor typically improves a dog's health. There's a reason that humans don't marry our relatives. Saint Berdoodles tend to have fewer health issues than a pure Saint Bernard. Intelligence: Poodles consistently rank as one of the top if not THE top breeds for intelligence. Saint Berdoodles are very quick learners. Trainability: Usually the St Berdoodle's increased intelligence makes them an easy dog to train. Saint Berdoodles love pleasing their owner. Walking Partner: Although Saint Berdoodles are one of the lowest energy doodles, they tend to be more active than a somewhat lethargic purebred Saint Bernard who usually prefers to lounge all day. Although a Saint Berdoodle will not be an active runner like a Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, Aussiedoodle, or Springerdoodle, you can usually take a Saint Berdoodle for a long walk--more so than a purebred Saint Bernard. Nathan Crockett was one of the first breeders to raise top quality Saint Berdoodles. We have people from all over the U. Saint Berdoodle Pricing. Saint Berdoodle Highlights Saint Berdoodles are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Saint Bernard or Poodle parents. Two common color combinations of Saint Berdoodles are white-and-brown and white-and-black. They can also be red with white accents or white with red accents. The coats of Saint Berdoodles can take after either parent—wiry and curly for the Poodle, or longer and smooth or rough for the Saint Bernard. Saint Berdoodles are generally pretty well-equipped for cold weather, especially if their coats are similar to Saint Bernards. Saint Berdoodles are great with people of all ages, including kids. The only concern with these dogs is their size with very young children. Be sure to supervise interactions with very young children in case of accidental stepping or sitting. These dogs do not enjoy being alone, so they would love the company of other pets and family members. Saint Berdoodle History Historical records show Poodles being bred in the s and Saint Bernards being bred in the s, both in Europe. Saint Berdoodle breeding is a little more vague, but it looks like they were bred intentionally in the US beginning in the s. The rationale to combine the protectiveness and rescue nature of the Saint Bernard with the intelligence and trainability of the Poodle for a family dog was strong. Between and alone, Saint Bernards rescued over 2, people. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Saint Berdoodle rescues, or check with breed-specific Saint Bernard or Poodle rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. Saint Berdoodle Size Though there is quite a range of sizes for Saint Berdoodles, you can expect a larger dog, in general. Saint Bernards are always large, and Standard Poodles are medium-to-large. In terms of height, the range is typically between 15 and 30 inches. There have been attempts at creating a Miniature Saint Berdoodle, with a weight between 20 and 50 pounds, and a height between 14 and 18 inches, but miniaturizing a Saint Bernard usually involves breeding with a smaller dog, too—most commonly the Cocker Spaniel. You can expect your Saint Berdoodle to be friendly and affectionate, always wanting to be part of family activities. The only reason you may need to supervise interactions with Saint Berdoodles and very small children is just that these dogs are often quite large, so accidents may happen with sitting or stepping. Saint Berdoodle Health Saint Berdoodles are fairly healthy dogs. While mixing breeds can be a way to minimize genetic disorders, the resulting crossbreed can still inherit health problems from the parent breeds. Regular care and annual veterinary check-ups are a good way to keep your dog in prime health. Some of the more common health problems for Saint Berdoodles include: hip dysplasia. Life Span Did You Know? Although a mixed-breed dog can take on any combination of traits from one or both of their parent breeds, well-socialized Saint Berdoodles tend to be affectionate and loving dogs with sweet natures and social personalities. This designer dog breed may not be recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are still recognized by other notable dog organizations. The Saint Berdoodle is a gentle giant that makes a great addition to any family. Well-socialized, they tend to be social and friendly with charming, cheerful personalities. They also tend to be affectionate, loving, and highly intelligent dogs. These dogs can be good watchdogs as they are initially wary of strangers and will alert you when someone is on the property. Although Saint Berdoodles do tend to have a protective instinct over their family and territory, they tend to be quite social and friendly and do not tend to be aggressive provided they have been properly socialized and trained. Saint Berdoodles are moderately adaptable dogs. Due to their sheer size, they are better suited to larger homes with yards where they can run and roam freely. They could potentially adapt to apartment living if they are given enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation, but their size will definitely be a challenge in smaller spaces. This dog adapts well to most moderate climates. As a large, fluffy dog, they are also sensitive to heat and can easily overheat. Because a Saint Berdoodle craves attention, bonds closely with their family, and loves being with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A crossbred dog can inherit the potential health concerns common to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of Saint Berdoodle puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to ensure that they are not passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large dog, the Saint Berdoodle is also at a higher risk of bloat just like both parent breeds. Bloat in dogs can become dangerous quickly and is fatal if the stomach flips. Although the Saint Berdoodle will grow to be a giant dog, they tend to be gentle and highly trainable. Their high intelligence and eagerness to please means they pick up on things quickly and are relatively easy to train. This makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods that are calm and consistent and focused on reward and praise. Puppy training classes are always an option and can be a good opportunity to socialize a puppy, which is even more important in a dog this size. The maintenance your Saint Berdoodle requires will depend completely on the coat they inherit. But, they will require daily brushing and professional grooming every weeks. Once or twice monthly nail trimming is usually enough to keep them from growing too long and causing issues. You can also support your efforts to prevent dental diseases later in life with dental hygiene chews and treats approved by your vet. Saint Berdoodles tend to have a moderate energy level. They will be energetic while playing and require some exercise, but they will be happy to be a couch potato every now and then. Daily walks plus some time to play are usually enough for this big dog. They may not be a good fit for a running partner, but your Saint Berdoodle may enjoy going on hikes with you, taking trips to the dog park, or even going swimming. Just make sure you keep activities low impact until their bones and joints finish growing and developing. A fully-grown Saint Berdoodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. They are one of the largest dog breeds. Saint Berdoodles generally live for years on average. This designer dog breed is most commonly known as a Saint Berdoodle, but they are also sometimes called a Saint Berpoo. Featured Saint Berdoodle Article. Determining the exact cost of a Pug in Maine can be difficult, as prices can vary depending on various factors such as the breeder, location, pedigree, and lineage. It is important to note that the initial cost of purchasing a Pug is not the only expense involved in owning one. You also need to consider other expenses such as food, grooming, toys, and veterinary care, which can add up to the total cost of owning a Pug. Therefore, it is important to consider all the costs associated with owning a Pug before making a purchase. Before buying a pug, it is essential to find a reputable breeder who prioritizes the health and well-being of their puppies. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a pug breeder: 1. Pug Health Checks A good breeder should provide health checks for the puppies and their parents. Conformation The pug breed standard requires a distinct body type, but an overly flat face can result in breathing difficulties and increased sensitivity to heat. You should critically assess the conformation of any pug you might be considering buying and look for breeders who prioritize the health of their puppies. References And Recommendations Look for breeders who have a good reputation in the community, and ask for references from past customers. You can also check online reviews and social media pages to see what others are saying about the breeder. Socialization helps the puppies get used to different people, sounds, and environments, making them well-adjusted adult dogs. Support And Guidance A good breeder should provide support and guidance to their customers, even after they have sold the puppy. They should be available to answer any questions or concerns you might have and provide information on puppy care and training. Remember, choosing a reputable breeder can make all the difference in the health and happiness of your new pug. Taking the time to find a responsible breeder is well worth it in the long run. Here are 10 effective questions to ask a Pug breeder before making your purchase: Have the puppies been checked by a vet and received their first set of vaccinations? How long have you been breeding Pugs? Are you a registered breeder and do you have any certifications or awards? What kind of socialization and training have the puppies received? Can you provide references or reviews from previous customers? What health issues are common in Pugs, and have the puppies been screened for these issues? How much exercise do Pugs require, and what is your recommended exercise regimen for your puppies? What is your policy on returns or exchanges if there are any health issues with the puppy? Are you available for support and advice after I bring my puppy home? Here are some tips on how to assess the quality of your Pug puppy and ensure that you have a happy and healthy pet: 1. Check their physical appearance: The physical appearance of your Pug puppy can tell you a lot about their quality. Their coat should be shiny, smooth, and free from any bald patches or skin irritations. Their eyes should be clear and bright, and their ears should be clean and free from any discharge or unpleasant smells. Observe their behavior: A well-bred Pug should have a friendly, outgoing, and confident personality. They should be curious about their surroundings, eager to meet new people, and playful with other dogs. Puppies that seem overly shy, fearful, or aggressive may be poorly bred or have been poorly socialized. Check their health history: A reputable breeder will provide you with a health history of your Pug puppy, including information on any vaccinations, deworming or medical treatment they have received. Make sure to keep this information up-to-date and provide it to your veterinarian for their records. Research the breeder: Before purchasing a Pug puppy, make sure to research the breeder thoroughly. Check for reviews or feedback from previous customers, as well as any certifications or awards the breeder may have received. Consider the price: The price of your Pug puppy can be an indicator of their quality. Your vet can also provide you with advice on how to ensure that your Pug puppy is happy and well-adjusted. In summary, assessing the quality of your Pug puppy involves a combination of physical observation, health history, research, and consultation with a veterinarian. By following these tips, you can ensure that you have a high-quality, healthy, and happy Pug companion for years to come. Some Questions To Ask A Breeder Asking questions is an integral part of the adoption process for the breeder-client interaction. After all, a puppy adoption is a two-way interview. Do any of these Pugs have any medical conditions I need to know about? Can I meet the parents and the rest of the litter? Are there any vaccinations that I will be responsible for in the near future? When can the baby Pug come home with me? What brand of puppy chow did you give the Pugs? What is the name and address of the Vet that saw the puppies? Can I contact you if I have questions about the Pug puppy in the future? We strongly encourage asking as many questions as possible — going in prepared is a big plus for any adoption process. Common Traits of the Pug Breed Pugs are very smart. For example, our Pug likes to move his bed closer to a spot where it is warmer when he gets cold. Also, Pugs are sensitive to our emotions — they comfort you when you feel down. Ours does this by stuffing his nose into our legs to let you know they are there. It is seriously endearing. One downside of this breed is that Pugs shed a lot. We often fill our trash bin with pug fur after brushing him. An added benefit of daily brushings is that they will see it as bonding time and feel much better after brushing. Some have professional websites loaded with great pictures and quality information. Ultimately, contacting the breeder and asking the questions listed above and other questions you may have will help you verify their expert claims. Pug Haven First up on the list is Pug Haven. To do that you need to look at some markers in your dog which will determine the health condition of your pug or any other dog. Some things you need to check before making a purchase- Pugs eyes if they seem watery can indicate potential health problems. If the eyes of a pug are watery, squished and glazed over that can mean they have dust entering in their eyes. Is your pug making a rattling or rasping sound? If they are, that can be a sign of troubled breathing. This can also mean the pug you intend to choose has breathing problems. Pugs have underdeveloped hips. Look for possible signs of limping when buying a pooch. People can also suggest to you that the pug which comes near to you is the best. Well, that is simply not true since that could mean that the pug is a bit bold. It will create problems while you train him. Also, look for a breeder which is reputable in the market. To choose a pug breeder you have to know if your breeder is genuine or not. First impressions are important to make you know the intentions of people. Look in depth at the behaviour of the pug breeder? Is he trying to hold information from you? Is he not being transparent about the tax receipts, vaccines administered and all the health services of the pug. Please be clear about it. Has your breeder gotten a puppy or a dog from a puppy mill? This is something very important. All pets need to be registered under AKC. If you find a breeder who is not willing to give you any registration details, he can be lying. He might be from a puppy mill if he does not have his pugs registered under AKC. Conclusion Just make sure to watch out for two things when getting a pug. To get it from a trusted source and whether you are apt enough to take care of one. Once you have clarity on it you are good to get one. Related Topics:.
