I was particularly concerned with breathing issues that these dogs so often has, and Deb was able to answer all of these questions with with ease and details since she has a deep experience in breeding Frenchies, and loves to do it. She has a fantastic working knowledge of genetics, and tracks her dogs health so well that she can use this data to produce great litters. Her process is impressive. We were able to give Deb our criteria about the kind of dog we were looking for, and what we were not. She immediately spoke about future litters she was planning that would fit our needs. I fully expected to have to wait up at least 6 months for a puppy, but we were able to get a puppy sooner than that. We got Millie, a beautiful Fawn with tons of red accents. She is smaller in size, just as we like, and Deb told us that with her intensity gene, that her coloring was going to be stunning. She was absolutely right. Below we discuss some tips and essential items to have on hand, including a safe and controllable heating pad for dogs. Pre-Birth Care Your dog will need normal veterinary care as well as a pre-breeding examination prior to the birth of her puppies. She should be tested and treated for parasites and must be up to date on her vaccinations. If possible, the father of the puppies should be health screened and current on all vaccinations. Whelping Box A big step is introducing your dog to her whelping box in advance of her labor to make sure she is comfortable in the area and feels safe during delivery. The whelping box should be warm we will touch more on this later and quiet. If you have other dogs in the home, they should be kept away from the whelping box once it is introduced, allowing the mother to feel comfortable throughout the entire process. Pre-Birth Items The following are some items you want to make sure to have before your dog goes into labor. Newspaper lining the whelping box may be used as bedding for your dog and her puppies before, during, and after whelping. Towels will be needed to clean off the puppies during whelping. Contact your local vet immediately should any problems arise. Post-Birth Items The following are some items you will need on hand once the first puppy is born, and throughout the litter birthing process. After the birthing process is over, clean the whelping box with paper towels. The Ideal Whelping Heating Pad A whelping heating pad is crucial to have on hand next to and in the whelping box. While you clean the whelping box after the birthing process, you are going to need to place the new puppies onto a safe heating pad so they stay warm. The whelping box must also be warm to prevent illness. Depending on the breed, the temperature of the whelping box will need to remain at a consistent temperature around 80 degrees, making it important to have a pad that is adjustable. Do not include the lip of the tray in your measurements. Ask if you need pig rail adapters. Visit www. I like this crate, it is tough with a nice strong plastic removable heavy duty plastic floor. It has a top and two lockable access doors. My Frenchie mums feel safe inside. There is plenty of room for a big litter. I can put a blanket over the crate if we have visitors and always at night. The rest of the time mum can see out and feels safe and secure. The pig rail is absolutely critical. With out it, you run a very significant risk of squashed and suffocated puppies. Every commercial whelping box uses either a heat lamp or a heating pad. Your Frenchie will hate them and so do I. Heat lamps are closest to mum. She is already hot and now you are going to cook her? Heat pads either heat the entire floor or only a part of the floor. Again if you heat the floor hot enough for puppies F , then mum will be panting and not wanting to be in there with her puppies. If the pad only covers part of the floor there are cold areas. Puppy death zones! With perimeter heating the puppies migrate to the pig rail. This is absolutely the safest place to be. They will sleep there for hours and only move when they are hungry. She is happy to be there. The puppies are nursing and warm or under the pig rail, safe and warm. We even have models to install on the Dura-whelp and EZ-Whelp boxes. And we can custom build a system to add to any whelping box too!

All they care about is having fun. If you ever seen two puppies play then you already know how rough, mean and aggressive those games can look while being super adorable at the same time. One pup will chase the other one growling, one will be barking his little head off in his very non-threatening voice while the other will chase his siblings around biting him and tugging him by his ears. At their very core they still have those predatory instincts that come out to the surface. However the instincts to chase down prey, growl in the face of danger and attack their enemies is deeply ingrained in him. Just like little kids like to play games where they pretend to be adults, your little guy is doing exactly the same thing. I bet when your little guy was even younger, you would have had no problem with him biting you with his little teeth because you could barely feel it. However as he got older, those little teeth got bigger, the biting started to hurt more and outrunning your Pug puppy took a bit more effort. Puppies teach each other when to stop biting If left amongst his peers, your puppy would have outgrown his behavior as he got older at the very least he would have learned to take it easy with the aggression. His siblings and his parents would be the ones teaching him when enough is enough. The pup will either yelp out or just stop playing with the aggressive one. At first the biter might not even realize why his pal suddenly changed his mind, but when more of his siblings stop playing with him after he nips too hard he will realize that something is up. He will have to learn that if he wants to keep playing games with his buddies, he will have to play much nicer. All you have to do is show him that if he wants to continue playing with you, he has to keep his sharp teeth off you and your clothes. Otherwise he will have to play all by himself, and we all know that there is no fun in that. Puppies biting their owners while playing have been a problem ever since people kept dogs as housepets. Stop the games whenever your puppy bites you — Just simply stop everything, turn away from him and go about your business while ignoring him. As soon as he realizes that using his teeth during playtime will lose your attention, he will find other ways to keep you interested. Yelp or shout to alarm him whenever things get too rough — You know how I talked about puppies yelping when things get too rough? The only problem though is that you have to teach him those games first. Your little guy only knows how to play with dogs, so teach him games that he can play with humans. If you apply all three of the tips listed above, you will be on the right path to finally stopping your puppies biting. If everyone around him changes how they play games with him, he will have no choice but to change along with them. Watch out for aggressive behavior Sometimes puppies bite for other reasons than just playing. The suggestions above apply mostly to just play biting. Although most of the time when a puppy bites he is doing it playfully, there are exceptions to everything. Other reasons for your puppy to bite you might include: Feeling threatened — if your Pug feels threatened by you or someone around him after growling or barking at the person, he will have no choice but to bite them.
