The best reputable breeders have waiting lists that filled 6 months in advance, sometimes even up to a year or two. This in turn means that breeders will charge higher rates to keep up with the demand while not overbreeding the mama dogs. Size, Color, and Coat Type Another thing you should keep in mind is that certain sizes, colors, and coat types can cost you some extra money. For instance, some breeders charge more for Mini Labradoodles compared to Standard Labradoodles. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting a puppy from a professional, ethical breeder? Of course, there are many backyard breeders who have the best intentions in mind and only want to share the joy of this adorable crossbreed. However, oftentimes, these breeders might not conduct all the necessary health and genetic testing on their breeding dogs. Nor can they provide proper health guarantees for their puppies. Additionally, many backyard breeders do not choose new homes for the puppies as carefully as professional breeders. When a litter is born, they just sell all the puppies on a first come first serve basis. How much are Labradoodles when adopting from a backyard breeder? Puppy Mills Finally, we have the worst of the bunch — puppy mills. Unfortunately, these breeders only work for their own financial gain. More often than not, they neglect the wellbeing of their breeding dogs and puppies. Beware of pet stores, as well, as they often source their puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills usually overbreed their mama dogs and keep them on tight schedules to produce more and more puppies. Meanwhile, the dogs and puppies are kept in unsafe and unclean environments, often in small cages and kennels. Moreover, these pups often come with serious health conditions. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting from a puppy mill? Above all, we urge you to avoid these breeders at all costs. As a general rule of thumb, larger, Standard Labradoodles require more calories per day compared to smaller, Mini and Medium Labradoodles. All of them are tried, tested, and recommended by Doodle owners. Training Training and early socialization both play a key role in raising well-rounded Labradoodles. Vet Visits One of the most expensive parts of owning a dog is taking your pup to regular vet visits and wellness checks. And to be prepared for those unexpected vet visits, we recommend you choose a trustworthy pet insurance company. During the first year, you should make sure that your puppy is up to date with all of its vaccinations and preventative care for worms, fleas, ticks , and heartworm. Grooming You might already know that Labradoodles are high-maintenance when it comes to grooming and coat care. Time Investment Like any other pet, Labradoodles require a lot of time and effort from your part. Other Costs In addition to all the Labradoodle costs we mentioned above, there are other everyday items that your dog will need. These include food and water bowls, dog beds, dog crate, a collar and a leash, toys and chew toys, and poop bags. So, you know with absolute certainty that the Labradoodle is the right pup for you. But how can you find quality Labradoodle breeders? As fellow Doodle owners, we know how difficult it can be to find ethical, reputable breeders in your area. Why Are Labradoodles Expensive? Ethical Labradoodle breeders charge higher prices for their pups, as they carefully screen the breeding dogs through extensive health and genetic testing. In addition to that, they provide their clients with genetic health guarantees and implement various forms of enrichment methods when rearing the puppies. They are friendly and intelligent dogs, and many have a low-shedding coat, which means they can be a good choice for families dealing with allergies or asthma. But exactly how much will it cost you to bring a Labradoodle home? The cost of a Labradoodle actually varies significantly depending on the specific dog and where you get it. We will go through all the things you are likely to have to pay for within the first six months of bringing the puppy home, and what you can expect to spend on the care and upkeep of your Labradoodle throughout their lives. The Cost Of Adopting A Labradoodle How much it will cost you to bring a Labradoodle into your household will vary significantly depending on where you get the puppy from. Whether you are looking for a standard Labradoodle or one of the small breeds that are the result of breeding a Labrador retriever with a miniature or toy poodle, also makes a difference, with the smaller dogs being more expensive. Why Are Labradoodles So Expensive? Labradoodles tend to be expensive because they are such desirable dogs. They are a mix of a Labrador retriever and a poodle, designed to be the perfect service dogs. Labrador retrievers have long been known as excellent working dogs because they are intelligent and motivated, which means they can be trained to complete the required tasks, and they also have a friendly and loving personality, so they know how to behave in public. This is essential when service dogs are able to enter public spaces that will be full of people, children, and other animals. However, the problem with Labradors is that they shed a lot. This means not only that they can be challenging to clean up after at home, but that they can be a health hazard in restaurants and places that need to maintain sanitary conditions, such as hospitals. Enter the poodle. Instead, the hair gets caught up in their coat and needs to be brushed out regularly. They are also highly intelligent, even more so than Labradors, which means they have a great ability to learn new tasks. They are also very loving, having been bred as companions, though they are a bit more wary of strangers than Labradors are. So the idea is that you combine a Labrador retriever and a poodle to get a Labradoodle, which has all the characteristics to work as a service dog and also has a low-shedding coat. But, since breeders are often catering to a specialist market, they do need to be careful to control for the characteristics they want. They need to be very careful to breed for the low-shedding coat since a Labradoodle naturally has an equal chance of inheriting a high-shedding Labrador coat and a friendly personality, as well as intelligence and an ability to learn. This is a lot of work for the breeder, so they charge more. The smaller pups cost even more because they are harder to breed due to the size difference between Labradors and small poodles. However, if you do come across a Labradoodle that does have the high-shedding coat of a Labrador, you might be able to get them a bit cheaper, as they will be harder to sell as service dogs. But be warned! It is almost impossible to tell whether a Labradoodle will have a low-shedding or high-shedding coat until they are at least 12 weeks old. With so much variation in the price of Labradoodles, it can be hard to know whether you are getting a good deal, or if you are being ripped off. Below are the main factors that affect the individual prices of Labradoodles and will push the price above or below the standard. These factors should help you determine whether a Labradoodle is being priced appropriately. Location Yes, just as housing costs more or less depending on where you live, the same is true of Labradoodles and all other dogs. Size As we have already said, size makes a big difference, and small Labradoodles that are the result of breeding between a Labrador retriever and either a miniature or toy poodle are significantly more expensive. This is because they are harder to breed, and they are also highly desirable pups. A mini Labradoodle can cost twice as much as a standard-sized version. Coat Type Labradoodles have three different coat types, which are classified as flat, wavy, or curly. Flat coats are most like the high-shedding coats of the Labrador, while curly coats are most like the low-shedding coats of poodles. Wavy coats fall somewhere in between. It will be no surprise to learn that curly coats are the most popular, and that dogs with these coats are more expensive. You might get a Labradoodle with a flat coat at a discount because they are shedders. This is easier to predict if you are breeding two Labradoodles that both already have the desired coat characteristics, but is very difficult to determine with first-generation Labradoodles. Coat Color Labradoodles come in a much wider range of colors than Labrador retrievers, and many of the more exotic coat colors are highly prized. Dogs like the Phantom Labradoodle and the Tuxedo Labradoodle are very coveted, and this can add significantly to the price of the dog. Breeder Reputation The fact of the matter is, when you are buying a dog from a breeder, you are putting a lot of faith into the assumption that everything they are telling you is true. They are the ones telling you that the parent pups have undergone extensive health screenings and that they have controlled for desirable characteristics. For this reason, reputation is very important among breeders, and you should always do a little bit of research on your breeder before purchasing. If you do find a good breeder with a reputation for producing happy and healthy pups, you can expect to pay more. They are at the top of the market, so they can afford to demand more money. Plus, good practice is usually more expensive to deliver. Additional Expenses When Buying A Labradoodle Puppy There are other expenses related to bringing a new puppy home beyond the price of the puppy itself. When you but a Labradoodle puppy from a reputable breeder, the price usually includes: Initial vaccination shots. However, some pups exchange hands for even more, if they have something which makes them especially desirable examples of what that might be coming up! You may also see Labradoodle puppies advertised for far less. This should be a red flag. A good breeder spends a great deal of money to produce a healthy litter. The costs of breeding a healthy litter include: Health screening for the parents. Travel and accommodation to meet a suitable stud dog. Veterinary costs for mom and her litter. Extra food. Whelping supplies, such as a whelping box, heat mats, and bedding. Time off work to look after mom, and start socializing her puppies. Backyard breeders, puppy mills, and online sellers may offer puppies at bargain prices, but only by cutting their own costs first. So their puppies are more likely to leave home with inherited health problems that require expensive treatment later. Or with behavioral problems like separation anxiety or stranger-directed aggression, which are difficult or impossible to overcome. Lots of people are overwhelmed by the upfront cost of a well bred puppy. Adopting a dog from a shelter is one way to find a dog for less, but without supporting unethical breeding practices. And some regions even have dedicated rescue organizations which specialize in rehoming Labradoodles and other Poodle crosses. This is a much less expensive route and adoption fees often cover things like initial vaccinations and microchipping. Such as whether they carry any late-onset inherited diseases, or are reactive to certain triggers. What Factors Determine Labradoodle Cost? There are a number of factors which may make people willing to pay more for a Labradoodle. Breeder Good breeders are rarely in it for the money. Even if they sell their puppies for a more money than they spent on them, the profit divided by the number of hours they spent caring the dam and her litter works out in cents! All breeders have their own personal philosophy on pricing pups. They might have a reputation and a waiting list which means they can charge more than the competition. They might also charge highly to deter people from buying their puppies on impulse. Provided you ask politely, a reputable breeder will be happy to explain how they arrived at the cost of their puppies. But a breeder who refuses to discuss how they set their price at all may be attempting to cover up the fact that their puppies have been very poorly raised and are not worth the asking price. Breeding Stock Breeders who invest in meticulous health screening of their sire and dam may pass the cost of that onto their buyers, and they have every right to do so. Puppies from thoroughly health tested parents cost more upfront, but they are likely to cost less in lifetime veterinary fees. Labradoodle puppies from parents with show or field titles may also be advertised at higher prices. The puppies of Labradoodles that have been backcrossed with a purebred Poodle will have a greater chance of inheriting the Poodle coat. Other factors There are other things which might affect Labradoodle costs too. For example, in cities and urban areas, miniature Labradoodles might command higher prices than standard Labradoodles. Some factors have nothing to do with the dog at all. For example, many reputable breeders avoid producing litters around Christmas time to avoid buyers passing them on as gifts to other people, or buying them on impulse without really thinking it through. Low quality breeders on the other hand, tend to push their prices up at this time of year. The Cost of Owning a Labradoodle in the First Year Whether you go a shelter or a breeder, adoption fees and purchase price are only the beginning of what it costs to own a Labradoodle. The first year will typically be the most expensive because this is when most major expenses occur. Such as Having the dog spay or neutered. Training classes. Accessories like a crate, bedding, toys, collar and leash. Labradoodles have a high frequency of joint disorders such as hip and elbow dysplasia, which may require expensive monthly prescriptions to manage. Bringing a puppy into your life comes with the responsibility to keep him healthy and happy. From food to medical costs, from toys to grooming, there a number of regular expenses that come with owning a dog. Food is such an essential part of ensuring your dog is healthy and there is a wide range of commercial dog foods available. You can spend tens, or hundred of dollars per month! Always choose a good quality food that lists animal protein as the first ingredient and avoid brands that include meat by-products, fillers, and artificial ingredients that can cause gastrointestinal problems and allergic reactions. Sponsor Meet Forest Meet Forest! This sweet boy comes with a sad story - he and his buddy Grover, now happily adopted, were abandoned at a campground in Kentucky. When the rangers spotted them, they were wet, skinny and understandably terrified. It took weeks for rescuers to earn their trust and once they did, they made their way to STAF. Today, you would never know that he had such a rough first start in life. He is 65 lbs. Forest is strong and was hard to handle at first on leash. He has since attended training and many volunteers can vouch that he is now great on leash and walks. He knows when to get into training mode! It would be great if his future home could continue this amazing progress. He learns very quickly and despite his horrible start in life he is well mannered while out and about. He already knows sit and stay and we are working on downs! His training worked wonders. I adore them! Very affectionate. Think Forest might be the dog for you? Visit STAF. You will be asked to return for at least one follow-up visit, then take the dog home for a trial period before officially adopting. Considering Forest for adoption? Exercise Grooming In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. Our American Bulldog puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. American Bulldogs love routine and will adapt to an exercise and grooming routine if the owner enforces it perfectly. As loyal dogs, they love to please their owners but will only obey upon frequent reinforcements. Do American Bulldogs shed a lot? Since they do not have a lot of fur, they do not shed a lot and owners will not have a lot of hair to clean up, unlike many other dog breeds. Why do American Bulldogs have webbed feet? This is mainly due to genetics and is not a cause for concern. Should American Bulldogs be spayed? Many vets advise that American Bulldog owners should ensure their pets are neutered or spayed when it is between four and nine months. How often should American Bulldogs be fed? The American bulldog has a very large appetite in its formative years. They must, therefore, be fed very often about four times daily and in double portions when they are puppies right until they turn four. Are American Bulldogs a food fit in families? The American bulldog will fit right into your family. They love kids and tend to gravitate towards them. Do American Bulldogs have common health problems? A lot of the health problems experienced by American bulldogs are mostly genetic and do not affect the entire breed. These ailments could range from the kidney to thyroid disorders and a lot more. What is the American Bulldogs life expectancy? The American bulldog has an average lifespan ranging from ten to fifteen years. What is the American Bulldogs average size? The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. How tall do American Bulldogs get? The male American bulldog can grow as tall as 71cm while its female counterpart can grow up to 61cm. If you want a loyal, smart and incredibly active dog, then the American Bulldog is the perfect fit for you. Are you interested in purchasing a American Bulldog? Our veterinary partner estimates that Kona is 8 months old at the time of intake in September .Kona is good with people and other dogs. We took Kona in from rural Georgia where he was suffering with an old break to a leg which Kona suffered when he was deliberately run over. We immediately brought Kona to our veterinary partner for treatment of his broken leg. Kona is a very sweet boy who is great with other dogs. We can't change what Kona's life was like before we rescued him, but we can certainly change the rest of his life. And that change will bring him a happy, loving home where he will be cherished as a member of his forever family. If you would like Kona to spend the rest of his life as a member of your family, please apply online to adopt Kona GA at www. All pets are also current on age-appropriate vaccines at the time of adoption Given technical constraints on this database, this pet's location may not be as listed here. We can, however, provide transport support for pets in foster at a considerable distance from the adopter. Considering Kona GA for adoption?

As well as the dogs are cute and have a strong learning behavior. As you can imagine this can change quite regularly - so please send us a message below, or give us a call on .We look forward to hearing from you! Your name. Lady This sweet momma came to our rescue with her two babies as a part of a neglect case. Lady enjoys her foster siblings but doesnt need to be with them. She doesnt mind her foster cat siblings and has been around kids! She loves to be where her foster mom is at all times! Lady is still a little timid when doing new things or going to new places. We are still working on going up and down the inside stairs to bed and kennel. She is 4 years old and is potty trained! Does Lady sound like she could be a part of your family?! This girl is an angel! She seems to be potty trained and is very well behaved! She likes to have her people near her but also likes to be in her own space where she feels comfortable. Her favorite is butt scratches and she will ask for belly rubs!! She knows sit, shake, down. Before throwing the ball, she has to sit. She gets so excited. She loves playing in water and will jump up to catch any water splashed at her. This girl is amazing on a leash too, she gets a little excited to smell every once in a while but once you pull the leash, she takes the correction and is back to your side. She is cat friendly as she avoids them at all costs. Could this girl be the right fit for you? She is ready for her furever family at anytime! Adult, Female, Large Lola Name: Lola Occupation: Showgirl Likes: Food, everything, everyone, puppy toys Dislikes: Being lonely, computer printers, world hunger This gorgeous beauty queen hails from the mystical small town of Fairfield, Iowa, where she was temporarily loved by the good people of Noahs Ark Animal Foundation, and where she won her first beauty title of Best Ears. Thanks to that experience, Lola has gone on to win other good doggy titles such as Most Energetic and Employee of the Month, with her foster family in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lola is an 8 month old all white German Shepherd that would do best in a home that has experience with the breed and is prepared for puppy energy, such as a home with older kids as she can be a bit rambunctious at playtime and might knock down smaller children. She is housetrained and knows a few basic commands and tricks but would do best in a home that will continue her training to become the best version of herself. An obedience class would do her wonders as she is a very quick learner! Lola would also do best in a home that has someone there most of the day. She will not be adopted to a family that plans to crate her all day, as she is still trying to grow hair back on parts of her legs from being kenneled for long periods of time. Lolas foster mom works from home and Lola is only crated when everyone in the house will be gone, however she will most likely grow be able to be trusted to roam free alone in a home eventually. At night she is not crated but prefers to sleep with or near her people for instance the hallway outside bedrooms. Some nights she will make the rounds and sleep with everyone, to make sure no one in the family misses out on her cuddles! Lola is a very loving and delightful puppy that would make any family a very good companion that gives her returned love and attention. She told us that she is already very excited to meet you! I am a petite girl who enjoys freedom in the house but dont let my good looks fool you - I am a very smart girl and love to steal food when youre not looking! I am a polite GSD who doesnt jump on humans but I do like to bark when the mail gets delivered. I am potty trained and I know sit, stay, and will usually wait for my food if you tell me! I love squeak balls and love a good hard chew. Im not sure how I feel about other dogs - I see them at the groomers but I usually start to squeal. Im kind of picky when it comes to other dogs and Ive never met a cat before. Ive never met a stranger I didnt like and Ive even been around kids, old and young! I have a fenced-in backyard but I usually stay on a leash because I still havent mastered coming back when called. Im looking for someone who has patience and knowledge of GSDs and would love someone who can take me for a nice, long walk. Senior, Female, Large Mia Mia is a sweetheart of a gal looking for a forever home that will love and cherish her. Mia is great with people, kids, and dogs. Mia is super playful. She has a genetic condition called MegaEsophagus. Her throat does not push food down to her stomach. To help her eat, Mia must sit in a "Bailey Chair" to eat softened food. She must then sit for 30 minutes while gravity works its magic. Mia knows her chair and her routine. Mia must also drink from an elevated water dish. If she eats in any different way, she will likely regurgitate and may aspirate. Due to her condition, she underwent a gastroplexy with her spay. This means you will never have to worry about bloat with Mia. With attention to detail, Mia can live a long happy life. She will reward you with a kind heart and dedication. Mia is whip smart. Mia has basic obedience down and would shine in good citizen and advanced obedience classes. Mia's chair and supplies will come with her. He has been with his foster since June .He is heartworm negative and up to date with his vetting, including neuter. Moe gets along great with dogs. Although Moe has not been tested with children. We have no reason to believe that he would be a problem with them. We are not sure about cats. She was an owner surrender because she was not very nice to the feral kitties in the neighborhood. We will not place her in a home with cats. Nova is great with dogs and children. She is a lovely girl in the home, content to lay at your feet as you work or relax. Adult, Female, Large Pepper Pepper cam into our rescue with her sister and mom, life has not be kind to her. Pepper and her family were part of a neglect case in Oklahoma. Pepper is a very sweet girl, but she will need lots of love to get her confidence back up! Pepper does not mind cats and has been around kids. Pepper is approximately 2 years old and is potty trained. Because she is so shy and timid, she is still working on leash training. We would like Goldy and Pepper to stay together! Do they sound like they could be a part of your family?! A friends daughter fostered her and found her to be sweet. However, it didnt work with her other pets, so she took her back. Princess had a hard time at the shelter with a few incidents. I agreed to take her, and my friends daughter pulled her on the day she was to be euthanized. I picked her up in early April. At the time, she had heartworm. Treatment was completed. Shes probably due for a check on it now. The Dallas shelter had her as 13, but everyone here thinks shes younger. Maybe .When she was surrendered, she was in heat. They spayed her at the shelter. Since Ive had her, shes been sweet to others other than the growls at repairmen. She likes to lick people. Now the special issues she has. Princess has separation anxiety. Shes gone from Prozac when I picked her up to trazadone. The trazadone helps a lot. Acepromazine was too strong, but the boarding place I use sometimes gives her half doses if needed. I can now leave her for several hours without anything happening to the house. She became smart to my tricks to get her into the crate at night, so I leave her out now. She really doesnt get along with other animals. I was told that when I got her, so Ive left my four cats in bedrooms since she arrived. Thats a huge reason why Id like to find her a forever home. Im not skilled with dogs though, so maybe someone could help her overcome that problem. I understand that she was surrendered with another dog. I also go out of town a lot, so I end up boarding her. She is kept away from direct contact with other dogs. Its been mentioned that she has made a lot of progress since she started there. Shes less reactive when other dogs go by her pen. I think the best scenario for her would be with someone who is home a lot and has no other pets. She definitely loves her humans. The sweetest most gorgeous GSD mix who cant wait to find her new home! Rachel has had a rough start to life but that doesnt stop her one bit! Rachel has love for everyone and everything she does. We think she is about 2 years old but in those 2 years she was likely never inside. So know if you would like Rachel as part of your family that she will need training. She doesnt understand how house life works, whats acceptable and whats not. As her fosters we have taught her a few basics but with just a few short weeks with her she will need lots of attention in her new home. Shes a master counter surfer. She does great with the 2 young kids in her foster home ages 4yrs and 18months and also with the other 2 German Shepherds in the home male and female. We do not know how she does with cats or small dogs. I believe Rachel would benefit from having another dog in the house who loves to play as much as she does! She is so playful and full of energy she could go for hours! She is very much a Velcro dog, she will follow you step for step everywhere you go. This gorgeous girl is ready to share her sweet, smart and sensitive self with her forever family! Adult, Female, Large. My name is Ralf aka Ralfy aka Ralfy Palfy. My fosters gave me the last nickname because they say I will make someone a great Pal. You see, I was found on the side of the road barely alive after being hit by a car. I couldn't walk very well because my pelvis was broken in three places. But after visiting this place called the veterinarian, I started feeling much better. Unfortunately before my accident I had never met kind humans and still to this day, I'm very easily startled and scared of new people. It's going to take someone very special and patient to earn my trust. But once you earn it, I'm the sweetest and most gentle dog ever. I love love love chest rubs and ear scratches. But my number one love of all time is treats!!! I love all flavors so if you decide to take me home, don't be shy when shopping for me! I enjoy sunbathing and relaxing in my kennel. It's my safe place when I feel overwhelmed. I promise to love you if you promise to take the time to get to know me. I will do best in a quiet house with maybe 1 or 2 adults and an older mature doggy friend. I don't care much for traveling and prefer to be a homebody. I do love to play with doggy friends and don't mind cats either. I'm currently working on becoming more confident in public spaces. What do you say? Can you give me a shot? Ralf is kennel trained and potty trained. He is a local adoption only. His current foster is a trainer who is willing to offer two free sessions along with his adoption to set you both up for success and better help you understand what he will need and how you can help provide that for him. He is a Shepherd mix that weighs roughly 50lbs.

Have regular preventative treatment against worms and fleas Have a fuller history than at a rescue centre We will also offer insurance for the first four weeks after rehoming. We expect people who rehome from us to take on ongoing costs going forward. Health and behaviour Our dogs have their own unique quirks and personality. They are very special and provide lots of love. Some of our dogs may not have qualified as they have health conditions or behavioural issues which affect their ability to be a guide dog. These health and behaviour issues can range from mild to major, including skin issues, lameness, high excitement, recall issues, separation anxiety, poor travelling or poor lead behaviour. Welcoming a dog into your home and lives is a big emotional and financial commitment. Animal welfare is our top priority and as such we strongly recommend that you arrange public liability insurance and insurance cover for veterinary treatment. Behaviour It may be that one of our dogs has shown some behavioural issues such as: positive and negative reactions, recall issues, separation anxiety, poor travelling or poor lead behaviour. Dogs may have received different levels of training — some may not even have entered early training, so it is worth bearing that in mind too. There can also be golden retrievers, curly coat retrievers and German shepherd dogs to rehome. Sometimes, we also have crosses, including with poodles. Commitment A dog must not be left alone for more than four hours in any hour period. You must be able to meet the mental and physical needs of one of our dogs. Do you have any puppies? No — we do not home very young puppies. A dog has to be a certain age before a decision is made about its potential to be a working guide dog, the typical age for withdrawn dogs is usually between months old. We would encourage all people considering rehoming a puppy to look at our rehoming scheme and consider a withdrawn or retired dog. If you are still considering a puppy then you may wish to read about our puppy walking scheme. How much does it cost to rehome a dog from Guide Dogs? All of our dogs are neutered, microchipped, health checked and have regular preventative treatment against worms and fleas. Volunteering as a puppy raiser or fosterer is a great way to support our work. I would like to thank everyone for emailing the photos to me. I'm sure you'll all see how the pup's resemble both Holly and Willow, and their dads, Jambo and Lancer. We keep in contact with as many of our puppy owners as we can, and we are really glad to hear that all the pups are getting along well, and have grown to be such wonderful dogs. This week we have picked some lovely dogs for our Star Pets gallery and you have been telling us how much you have been enjoying spending extra time with your pets during lockdown. Scroll through our gallery of pictures above to see more.We couldn't help but adore Storm, the seven-year-old blue merle Collie x Husky, main image above who belongs to Clare Cleaver of Whitwell. Clare got him from the mainland as a five-week-old puppy in a neglected state. She said there was a whole litter of puppies there and she would have loved to take them all, but she settled on Storm. Since that day hopefully he has had a great life with us. Clare said: "Brooke was bought on the Island from a breeder. She gets regular brushes and pets and is a great companion for my daughter. She takes her to dog shows and did dog agility for a year which she was really good at. Brooke enjoys her walks and of course, being a Golden Retriever, enjoys her food! She does a few tricks including spin, sit, roll over and down. Skye is the pride and joy of Donna Fincham's family from Newport. Syke is an eight-month-old half Border Collie, half Kelpie. Donna said: "Skye is our first ever family dog and she has really helped us during lockdown to get us out and about for exercise. She's brilliant for anxiety and stress-relief too. She has amazing recall and is starting to learn commands such as 'Away' and 'Come by. Spike said: "We were told he was a very scared and timid seven-month-old puppy who was left in a cardboard box with his sister. Our contacts at the charity said he may not be the puppy we are looking for and will require a lot of patience and training. Though he did sleep in our bed his first night! But if you ask our cat Venus, she might think differently! And he loves to jump on walls on his walks like a little mountain goat! Sandy said: "Roxy is a professional whinger, from her meals to cuddles and walks. She has kept me sane through these strange times. I bought an ordnance survey map and we have discovered loads of walks in our area. Have you got a lovely pet which you would like other people to see? Meet the Chocolate Goldendoodle The Chocolate Goldendoodle is a charming hybrid dog breed that has captured the hearts of many dog lovers in recent years. A cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever , the Chocolate Goldendoodle combines the best traits of both breeds, resulting in a furry companion that's as smart as it is affectionate. One of the most striking features of the Chocolate Goldendoodle is its unique coat, which is soft, curly, and chocolate brown in color, hence the name. Their coats are also low-shedding, making them an excellent choice for people with allergies or those who prefer a cleaner home. But their good looks are not the only thing that makes Chocolate Goldendoodles so popular. They are also known for their friendly and playful personalities, making them ideal family pets. They love to play and are always up for a good game of fetch or tug-of-war. Intelligent and easy to train, Chocolate Goldendoodles excel in obedience training and make great therapy dogs. Whether you're looking for a new furry friend or simply want to learn more about this delightful breed, read on to discover everything you need to know about the Chocolate Goldendoodle. What Makes the Goldendoodle Chocolate? The Chocolate Goldendoodle gets its unique color from its parent breeds, the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. Both breeds come in various colors , including chocolate, and when they are bred together, their offspring can inherit a chocolate-colored coat. The genetics behind coat color in dogs is complex , and it is determined by multiple genes. In the case of the Chocolate Goldendoodle, the Poodle parent may contribute the chocolate gene, while the Golden Retriever parent may carry a gene that dilutes the color to a lighter shade. It is worth noting that while the chocolate color is highly sought after in Goldendoodles, it is not a rare color in either Poodles or Golden Retrievers. However, the combination of the two breeds and their various coat colors can produce a unique and beautiful chocolate coat in the Goldendoodle. Overall, the chocolate color is just one of the many things that make the Goldendoodle such a desirable and beloved breed. Their playful, affectionate, and intelligent personalities, combined with their charming appearance, have made them a popular choice for dog lovers everywhere. Are Chocolate Goldendoodles Rare? While the chocolate color is highly sought after in Goldendoodles, Chocolate Goldendoodles are not considered a rare breed. This is because the color is not exclusive to the Goldendoodle and can be found in other breeds, such as the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. However, it is worth noting that not all Goldendoodles come in the chocolate color. Goldendoodles can come in a variety of coat colors, including cream, black, red , and apricot, among others. The color of a Goldendoodle's coat will depend on the genetics of its parent breeds and the specific breeding practices of the breeder. When searching for a Chocolate Goldendoodle, it is important to do your research and find a reputable breeder who follows ethical breeding practices. A responsible breeder will prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs and work to produce puppies with desirable traits, including a chocolate-colored coat. While Chocolate Goldendoodles are not considered rare, they are still a highly sought-after breed due to their unique and charming appearance, as well as their friendly and lovable personalities. Understanding the Coat Types of Chocolate Goldendoodles The coat of a Chocolate Goldendoodle can vary depending on the genetics of its parent breeds, making it challenging to predict exactly what kind of coat a puppy will have. However, understanding the different coat types of Poodles and Golden Retrievers can give you a good idea of what to expect from your Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat. Poodle coats come in a variety of textures, including curly, wavy, and straight. They also come in different densities, from thick and fluffy to fine and silky. Poodles can have a single coat or a double coat, with the latter being more common in smaller Poodle breeds. Double-coated Poodles have a dense, soft undercoat and a topcoat that is coarser and curly. Golden Retriever coats are typically straight or wavy and have a dense, water-repellent undercoat. Their topcoat is longer and can be either flat or slightly wavy. Golden Retrievers shed seasonally, so you can expect some level of shedding from your Chocolate Goldendoodle, especially during shedding season. When a Poodle and a Golden Retriever are bred, their offspring can inherit any combination of these coat types. Chocolate Goldendoodles can have a straight, wavy, or curly coat, and it can be dense or silky, depending on the specific genetics of the parents. Some Chocolate Goldendoodles will have a single coat, while others will have a double coat. Chocolate Goldendoodle Coat Types Straight Chocolate Coat The Straight Coat is a low-maintenance coat type that is ideal for people who prefer a simple grooming routine. This type of coat is usually straight or slightly wavy, with a soft and smooth texture. The coat may be shorter than other coat types, making it less prone to matting and tangling. Straight Chocolate Goldendoodles do shed, but they require minimal grooming, such as brushing once or twice a week, and occasional trimming to maintain the coat's length and shape. This coat is usually tight and springy, with a soft and plush texture. Curly Chocolate Goldendoodles are typically low-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them a great option for people with allergies. However, the tight curls require regular grooming, including frequent brushing and clipping to prevent matting and tangling. Professional grooming every weeks is recommended for this coat type. Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Coat The Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Coat is a beautiful and low-maintenance coat type that is a cross between the straight and curly coat types. This type of coat is usually longer than the straight coat and has a gentle wave or loose curl. The coat may have a shaggy appearance, especially around the ears and face, adding to its charming appearance. This coat type requires moderate grooming, such as regular brushing and occasional trimming to keep the coat from matting or tangling. Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Goldendoodles are low-shedding but may require professional grooming every weeks. It is not uncommon for Chocolate Goldendoodles to change color as they grow older. This change in color is a natural part of the dog's aging process and is caused by several factors, including genetics, sun exposure, and the environment. One of the main reasons for the change in color is due to genetics. The genes responsible for coat color can be turned on and off throughout a dog's life, leading to changes in color over time. Additionally, certain coat colors can be dominant over others, which can affect how a dog's coat develops as they grow. Sun exposure can also play a role in changing the color of a Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat. Just like human hair, a dog's coat can lighten or darken due to sun exposure. Exposure to sunlight can bleach the coat, causing it to become lighter, or darken the coat, leading to a more vibrant color. Finally, the environment can also impact a Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat color. Exposure to certain chemicals or pollutants in the air or water can affect the coat's texture and color, leading to changes in the dog's appearance over time. Chocolate Goldendoodle Temperament Chocolate Goldendoodles are known for their friendly, playful, and affectionate temperament. They are a hybrid dog breed that is a cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever, two breeds that are both renowned for their excellent temperaments. Chocolate Goldendoodles are highly intelligent and eager to please, making them easy to train and quick learners. They are social animals that thrive on human interaction and love being around their owners and other pets. This makes them ideal family pets and excellent companions for children. In addition to their friendly and outgoing personality, Chocolate Goldendoodles are also known for their calm and gentle nature. They have a laid-back attitude and are not usually aggressive, which makes them an excellent choice for families with young children or other pets. Another characteristic that sets Chocolate Goldendoodles apart is their adaptability. They are comfortable living in a variety of settings, from apartments to large homes, as long as they receive regular exercise and social interaction. They are also great travel companions and love going on adventures with their owners. They have a soft and curly chocolate brown coat that is low-shedding and hypoallergenic. Their coat can be straight, wavy, or curly, depending on the genetics of their parent breeds. Chocolate Goldendoodles have a sturdy and athletic build, with a height of inches and a weight of pounds, depending on their size and gender. They have expressive eyes and long ears that hang down to the side of their face. Chocolate Goldendoodle Size The size of a Chocolate Goldendoodle can vary depending on the size of its parent breeds and the specific breeding practices of the breeder. Generally, they can range in height from inches and can weigh anywhere between pounds, depending on their gender and size. Miniature Chocolate Goldendoodles can also be bred, which are smaller and weigh between pounds. It's important to note that size is not the only factor that determines a dog's exercise and activity needs. Chocolate Goldendoodles of all sizes require regular exercise and social interaction to maintain their health and well-being. Chocolate Goldendoodle Generations Chocolate Goldendoodles can come in different generations, depending on the generation of their Poodle and Golden Retriever parents. Here are some of the most common Chocolate Goldendoodle generations: F1 Goldendoodles : The F1 generation is the first cross between a purebred Poodle and a purebred Golden Retriever. F1b Goldendoodles are more likely to have a non-shedding coat and are often preferred by people with allergies. They have more consistent traits and are less likely to shed, making them a popular choice for families with allergies. What are the Color Variations of Chocolate Goldendoodles? While Chocolate Goldendoodles have a beautiful chocolate brown coat, they can also come in a variety of color variations. These variations are often caused by the different coat colors of their parent breeds, the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. Some of the most common color variations of Chocolate Goldendoodles include: Chocolate and White: This color variation features a chocolate brown coat with white markings on the chest, paws, and face. Chocolate and Cream: This variation has a chocolate brown coat with cream-colored highlights. Chocolate and Tan: This variation features a chocolate brown coat with tan markings on the eyebrows, muzzle, and legs. Chocolate and Apricot: This variation has a chocolate brown coat with apricot-colored highlights. It's important to note that coat color can vary from puppy to puppy, even within the same litter. Chocolate Goldendoodle Lifespan The lifespan of a Chocolate Goldendoodle is generally between years, depending on their health and the quality of care they receive. While they are generally healthy dogs, like all breeds, they are susceptible to certain health issues such as hip dysplasia, ear infections, and eye problems. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and routine veterinary care can help prevent and manage these issues, ultimately increasing the lifespan of your Chocolate Goldendoodle. With proper care and attention, a Chocolate Goldendoodle can provide years of love, companionship, and joy to their owners. Common Chocolate Goldendoodle Health Problems Chocolate Goldendoodles are generally a healthy breed, but like all dogs, they can be prone to certain health problems. Here are some of the most common health problems that can affect Chocolate Goldendoodles: Hip Dysplasia: This is a common condition that affects many large dog breeds, including the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. It occurs when the hip joint doesn't develop correctly, causing pain and stiffness. Ear Infections: Chocolate Goldendoodles can be prone to ear infections due to their long, floppy ears that can trap moisture and bacteria. Regular cleaning and proper grooming can help prevent ear infections. Eye Problems: Some Chocolate Goldendoodles may develop eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, or progressive retinal atrophy. Regular veterinary checkups and proper eye care can help prevent and manage these conditions. Skin Allergies: Chocolate Goldendoodles may be prone to skin allergies, which can cause itching, scratching, and skin irritation. Proper grooming, a healthy diet, and regular veterinary care can help prevent and manage skin allergies. Grooming Needs of the Chocolate Goldendoodle Chocolate Goldendoodles have a beautiful, curly coat that requires regular grooming to keep it healthy and free from mats and tangles. Their grooming needs will depend on the type of coat they have, but in general, they require regular brushing, bathing, and hair trimming. They should be brushed at least once a week to prevent matting and tangling, and they should be bathed every weeks. Professional grooming every weeks can help maintain the shape and length of their coat. In addition to coat grooming, Chocolate Goldendoodles also require regular nail trimming, teeth cleaning, and ear cleaning to maintain their overall health and hygiene. Is a Chocolate Goldendoodle Right for You? Deciding whether a Chocolate Goldendoodle is the right dog for you requires careful consideration of several factors. While they are friendly, affectionate, and intelligent dogs, they are also a high-energy breed that requires regular exercise and social interaction to maintain their health and well-being. Before getting a Chocolate Goldendoodle, ask yourself the following questions: Do I have enough time to devote to a dog, including regular exercise and grooming needs? Am I prepared to train and socialize a high-energy dog? Can I provide a safe and secure living environment for a dog, including appropriate fencing and space to run and play? Can I afford the cost of a dog, including food, veterinary care, and grooming? Does my lifestyle allow for a dog, including the ability to provide regular care and attention? Generally, chocolate Goldendoodles are much like other Goldendoodle varieties, as they are also smart, friendly, and playful. For starters, the chocolate Goldendoodle is among the 13 Goldendoodles colors we have to date. Like the other colors of this mixed breed dog, chocolate Goldendoodles can come in patterns like sable, parti , merle , brindle, tuxedo, phantom, and abstract. However, since chocolate Goldendoodles are hybrid dogs, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC and other international purebred dog registries. This is why these beautifully-colored dogs cannot show off their coats and stunning looks in conformation shows organized by the AKC. The same is true with other Golden Retriever and Poodle mixes. Are Chocolate Goldendoodles Rare? Unfortunately, chocolate Goldendoodles are quite rare. The chocolate color is a recessive gene, which means both parents need to carry the chocolate color gene to produce a Goldendoodle. Producing a chocolate Goldendoodle can be quite difficult because Golden Retrievers do not have the chocolate gene. Thus, breeders need to breed a Poodle with a Goldendoodle that carries the gene. However, while it may take some time to find a breeder that produces this color, the chocolate Goldendoodle is not as rare as blue, gray, and silver Goldendoodles. Apart from their chocolate-colored coats, they possess the same traits and features that characterize Goldendoodles. On average, a standard Goldendoodle is a medium-sized dog that typically grows about 23 to 29 inches in height and weighs 60 to 85 pounds. However, do not be surprised to find Toy, Miniature, and medium-sized Goldendoodles. Their size will depend on what Poodle size variation was used in the breeding process. Chocolate Goldendoodles may also feature a soft-textured coat that can either be curly, wavy, or straight. Furthermore, these dogs have slightly elongated, well-built, and muscular bodies. Its face is characterized by long eyebrows, mustaches, and proportionate muzzles. Its oval eyes often come in dark brown or blue. As with any other mixed-breed dog, the appearance of chocolate Goldendoodles can vary widely depending on which parent has more dominant genes. However, it is best to personally verify the Poodle size used in breeding. In simpler terms, it is impossible to produce a chocolate Goldendoodle by randomly mating a Golden Retriever and a chocolate-colored Poodle. This is because Golden Retrievers do not have the recessive brown gene. That said, to produce a chocolate or brown Goldendoodle, breeders need to mate chocolate Poodles with Goldendoodles carrying the chocolate gene. The problem, however, is that not every Goldendoodle has the said gene. The generation of the Goldendoodle matters a lot to breeders who want to end up with a chocolate Goldendoodle. Do Chocolate Goldendoodles Stay Brown? Chocolate Goldendoodles change their coat color as they grow older. Their coat color may fade to silvery beige or light brown. Do All Chocolate Goldendoodles Fade? Most, but not all, chocolate Goldendoodles fade to a light brown or silvery beige color as they mature. This is a very normal process that Goldendoodles of certain colors, such as chocolate and black, undergo. As previously mentioned, the color of chocolate Goldendoodles fades to a light brown, often a silvery beige, as they mature. Unfortunately, the genes for silvering have not yet been isolated, making it difficult to predict whether silvering will occur in your dog. There is currently no genetic testing available that can determine silvering in Goldendoodles. That is why you can expect no less from chocolate Goldendoodles. Chocolate Goldendoodles are friendly dogs. They love getting attention, which is why they love being around people. They do not shy away from strangers, making them not good as guard dogs. However friendly as these dogs may seem, brown Goldendoodles have favorites, just like their Poodle parents. They tend to cling to one person in the household. If you have kids at home, you should not worry about getting them along with your chocolate Goldendoodle, as they are very gentle and patient with kids. However, as always, it is best to supervise them. Likewise, this hybrid is also a great option if you have other animals living at home. The problem, however, is that chocolate Goldendoodles do not thrive when left alone for long periods. These dogs are so highly social that they are prone to developing separation anxiety when left alone. Given the right amount of attention, love, and care, a chocolate Goldendoodle will make a great addition to any family. These natural charmers will surely please you with their natural humor and wit. Chocolate Goldendoodle Lifespan and Health Issues The chocolate Goldendoodle is a generally healthy breed that lives between 10 and 15 years, given enough love, care, and a proper diet. However, since both its parents are predisposed to various health issues, chocolate Goldendoodles are also prone to developing or acquiring some of them. Here are some of the most common health problems seen in chocolate Goldendoodles: Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is common in both Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles, making chocolate Goldendoodles susceptible to the same problem. This health issue occurs when the hip joints fail to develop normally, resulting in the dislocation of the ball and socket. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : Although progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a non-painful condition, this inherited eye disease progresses slowly over time, eventually leading to complete blindness in dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure available for PRA, but most dogs adapt well to their vision loss and continue to have a good life, given proper care and support. It is caused by a lack of protein, which is required to assist platelets in forming clots to seal broken blood arteries. In affected dogs, uncontrolled bleeding may cause death. As always, it is important to have your chocolate Goldendoodle routinely examined by a qualified veterinarian. This is to ensure that your dog is in good condition and avoids serious health conditions. You should note, though, that the expenses do not end there. The initial costs of owning a brown Goldendoodle puppy are summarized in the table below: Type of Expense. A Brief History of the Chocolate Goldendoodle The super cute face of a Chocolate Goldendoodle Goldendoodles are generally considered to be light brown, which is why only a few people are aware of the chocolate Goldendoodle. As a result, the chocolate-colored coat can be confusing for them. Poodles come in various dark colors, such as grey, brown, blue, black, although they also have brighter colors like white and silver. On the other hand, the usual colors for Golden Retrievers include cream, white, and red. Despite being a crossbreed between dark and bright-colored breeds, it is the dominant nature of the Poodle that resulted in the chocolate color. However, as the chocolate Goldendoodle grows polder, the color changes to brown with silver or faded brown. Chocolate Goldendoodle Coat Types A Chocolate Goldendoodle puppy With parents of different breeds, you can expect varying features in each chocolate Goldendoodle. One of the main differences is their coat type, which may be straight, curly, or wavy. As a result, these dogs will require different grooming depending on their coat. Straight Coat The straight coat makes the chocolate Goldendoodle look more like the Golden Retriever. However, it is rare to find a chocolate Goldendoodle with a straight coat. Despite looking beautiful, dogs with a straight coat tend to shed more. In addition, this type of coat requires regular grooming, at least weekly, to keep off tangles and knots, which could cause the dog pain. Moreover, matting could cause animal skin irritation and act as a hiding place for parasites. Curly Coat Goldendoodles with curly coats bear a close resemblance to Poodles. Additionally, you will have to trim the fur regularly and keep its hair short to keep it neat. Of all the coat types, the wavy coat is the most popular and preferred because it is easy to groom. Regardless of their healthy nature, chocolate Goldendoodles are prone to attack by some genetic health conditions. Moreover, always be on the lookout for symptoms that may indicate your dog is suffering from a medical condition to ensure that a healthy life. Fortunately, this condition is manageable. There is food and shampoo made for dogs with skin sensitivity to make them feel their best at all times. For a dog with cataract, you may notice that the eyes become cloudy and could lead to total vision loss for your chocolate doodle. In spite of the poor prognosis that an older dog might have, it is important to take your pet to the veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Hip Dysplasia Larger dogs like the Golden Retriever and Standard Poodles are most likely to be affected by hip dysplasia. This condition results from hip displacement, making it difficult for your dog to move and causes pain. If your chocolate Goldendoodle has this condition, consult your veterinarian for medication and surgery. Other health conditions may include epilepsy and arthritis. labradoodle puppies for sale in michigan - All they care about is having fun. If you ever seen two puppies play then you already know how rough, mean and aggressive those games can look while being super adorable at the same time. One pup will chase the other one growling, one will be barking his little head off in his very non-threatening voice while the other will chase his siblings around biting him and tugging him by his ears. At their very core they still have those predatory instincts that come out to the surface. However the instincts to chase down prey, growl in the face of danger and attack their enemies is deeply ingrained in him. Just like little kids like to play games where they pretend to be adults, your little guy is doing exactly the same thing. I bet when your little guy was even younger, you would have had no problem with him biting you with his little teeth because you could barely feel it. However as he got older, those little teeth got bigger, the biting started to hurt more and outrunning your Pug puppy took a bit more effort. Puppies teach each other when to stop biting If left amongst his peers, your puppy would have outgrown his behavior as he got older at the very least he would have learned to take it easy with the aggression. His siblings and his parents would be the ones teaching him when enough is enough. The pup will either yelp out or just stop playing with the aggressive one. At first the biter might not even realize why his pal suddenly changed his mind, but when more of his siblings stop playing with him after he nips too hard he will realize that something is up. He will have to learn that if he wants to keep playing games with his buddies, he will have to play much nicer. All you have to do is show him that if he wants to continue playing with you, he has to keep his sharp teeth off you and your clothes. Otherwise he will have to play all by himself, and we all know that there is no fun in that. Puppies biting their owners while playing have been a problem ever since people kept dogs as housepets. Stop the games whenever your puppy bites you — Just simply stop everything, turn away from him and go about your business while ignoring him. As soon as he realizes that using his teeth during playtime will lose your attention, he will find other ways to keep you interested. Yelp or shout to alarm him whenever things get too rough — You know how I talked about puppies yelping when things get too rough? The only problem though is that you have to teach him those games first. Your little guy only knows how to play with dogs, so teach him games that he can play with humans. If you apply all three of the tips listed above, you will be on the right path to finally stopping your puppies biting. If everyone around him changes how they play games with him, he will have no choice but to change along with them. Watch out for aggressive behavior Sometimes puppies bite for other reasons than just playing. The suggestions above apply mostly to just play biting. Although most of the time when a puppy bites he is doing it playfully, there are exceptions to everything. Other reasons for your puppy to bite you might include: Feeling threatened — if your Pug feels threatened by you or someone around him after growling or barking at the person, he will have no choice but to bite them. Possessive behavior — Some dogs are very possessive and will do anything to defend whatever they feel like is theirs. A lot can go wrong if you approach a dog that has shown warning signs for you to back off. Related Articles. Pug Dog Biting Biting Vs Nipping It's common to use the word biting, however most puppies nip and there is a big difference. A nip is a quick snapping of the jaws.It is done in reaction to one of several triggers: Fear- Sometimes if a pup is startled he may nip in automated reaction. Play - Young puppies and older Pug pups, if not taught nip as they play. This how newborns interacted with litter-mates. Once at their new home, new rules must be taught that this is not an accepted form of behavior. Ruby Photo courtesy of owner Alf Dixon Ruby Photo courtesy of owner Alf Dixon Irritation - If a favorite toy is taken away, if a puppy is too possessive of his "belongings", if a pup has not yet learned his place in the family "pack" and other triggers can cause a young Pug to bite or nip. Before we dive into training for this, let us make note that the above is a nipping problem and not an actual biting issue. Biting is reserved for when a dog aggressively bites, there is a locking of the jaw. There is skin contact and often broken skin. It is a dominant, aggressive action that warrants much different training. The Pug dog is an even tempered, good natured dog breed and very rarely will a Pug actually bite as opposed to nipping. Training for This All dogs find comfort and security in knowing that they are living in a pack. Today's modern dog's pack is his human family. By taking proper care of a Pug , an owner shows him that it is the human who is the leader Alpha. Proper feeding giving the sit command first and training for commands are the 2 main ways that a dog truly understands who is in charge. When a dog of any age is ignored by his leader, this sends a very strong message. Canines do not take this lightly and any action that seemingly lead to the brief social isolation is quickly put into the "do not do" category. This does not mean that an owner should ignore the behavior. What an owner should do, is to immediately take action by purposefully ignoring the puppy to such as extent that he worries that his action damaged his place in the pack.If both owner and dog are sitting down when the bite occurs, the owner should raise. If both were on the floor, the owner should stand or sit on the sofa. The idea is to physically separate from the pup and maintain an authoritative physical position. The next step is to completely ignore the Pug, this means zero talking and no eye contact. It will be a brief banishing in which the puppy is essentially invisible. Everyone in the house should follow this training no matter who was the "victim" of the nipping. And it is important that everyone is on the same page, since it does little good for a biting puppy to be ignored by one of his humans, but able to move on to the next to play and to possibly nip again. This training should last just about 10 minutes, but it should extend even longer if the pup has gone about his own business and is not focused on his owners. One key element the 10 minutes must be a time in which the Pug is very aware that he is no longer receiving attention. Once that time is up, allow interaction, and any time that the Pug nips or bite, immediately begin again. It is important to be very consistent with this. When done each and every time, training can be successful in as little as 2 weeks. Is Teething an Issue? Your Pug may be biting due to teething. While most owners do refer to this as biting, this is actually a gnawing in an attempt to sooth the pain and discomfort that a pup will experience when his teeth are growing in and gums are very sensitive and sore. At this stage in life, a Pug will chew on just about anything that he can get his mouth on. He or she will not care if it is your fingers, your new shoes or electrical cords! There are several ways to help your Pug dog get through this time without damaging your home and belongings. One element that separates this from the above biting issues is that a puppy should be given an option. When chewing on an un-approved object, that object should be taken away and replaced with a chew toy. If the dog seems to be having a really hard time, ice cubes plain or flavored can offer great relief. In addition, toys chilled in the freezer can take the edge off. Always praise good chewing habits while discouraging bad ones. And if the Pug pup nips at hands or feet, immediately follow the training previously explained for biting. In regard to any household items that you absolutely do not need on floor level: remove them or place them high enough so that your dog cannot reach them. Be sure to cover electrical wires with plastic shielding. Allowing a your Pug dog to have an ice cube will be very helpful. Placing dog toys in the freezer for an hour or two, and then offering them will help. All rights reserved. However, whilst Pugs tend to have good temperaments, as puppies they use their mouths to learn and will bite anything in sight. In this guide I will explain how you can overcome Pug puppy biting problems, despite the challenges involved. He has never been an aggressive biter, but he would nip a lot as a puppy. Unfortunately, a lot of the biting was down to me, as I would do rough play with him and almost encourage the nipping. But, as my puppy got older, those playful nips started to hurt. Please do take all my tips in, as I believe it to be the most detailed solution you will find for stopping a Pug biting that you see anywhere on the Internet. But first, why do Pugs bite you? Most will let you know they are scared with a little bark, letting you know to keep away. If you continue to advance and upset them, the growl can then become a snap and possible bite. But, with an older and more aggressive Pug, that bite could be very painful, particularly to young children. Do Pugs bite a lot? When Pugs are puppies, they do tend to do a lot of biting. Why Pug puppies bite? The teething phase is when you will notice your Pug puppy biting the most. Some Pugs will also bite a bit too enthusiastically when they are playing with you. This is a hangover from their days with their siblings where mouth play would have been used. You can stop a Pug biting you when they teethe by giving them things to chew on. As mentioned earlier, I would play with my own puppy and he would go for my hands with his teeth. I turned this into a game, which then became an issue as I had to train him out of it as he got older. Pug puppies can also bite as a way of showing their dominance over you. Whatever the reason is for your Pug puppy biting, it needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. If not, you will have problems with your adult Pug thinking that biting is acceptable. Also, if your Pug suddenly starts biting for no obvious reason please go to the vet immediately — it could be the sign of a new illness or injury. How to stop your Pug puppy from biting Here are different ways that really work if you need to know how you can stop a Pug from biting as a puppy. Squeal like a puppy bite inhibition When you see puppies playing together in their litter, they will let out a tiny squealing sound when bitten by sibling. The puppy that bit will hear the squeal and then tends to back off. As Pug owners we can imitate this behavior! If your Pug puppy bites you and gives you a nip, make a high-pitched squeal sound. You might find your puppy seeks re-assurance and comfort, but the key is to not give it. Instead, ignore them for a few moments, for example; turn your back to them. This might sound mean but if you want your Pug to stop biting it can work very well. The quicker you begin using this technique the sooner your Pug will biting you and your family. All it will do is make your dog scared and could lead to more biting out of fear. I made this mistake with my own puppy, as would push him away playfully, but that just encouraged the biting more. They will want more of the play, so will bite back again. But you are training them into thinking your hands are fair game. Instead you should use chew toys for this type of play. If you can focus their attention onto a toy and not your hands, they will learn that fingers and hands are not there to be bitten. You can also see the prices by clicking the photo below. Puppies will often eat things they should not do, so you will need to hook stuff out of their mouth. You will also need to check the health of their teeth and gums. One of the best ways you can train a Pug puppy to not bite your fingers in their mouth is to use a treat or snack. Let them see it, and then use your fingers to pop it into their mouth and out again. Over time, they should get comfortable letting you put fingers in their mouth without biting back. Train your Pug puppy to not bite over food One of the most common times a Pug puppy will bite is when food is in the equation. Puppies tend to be very overprotective of food, which they learned when in the litter as they had to fight for nutrition. Unfortunately, it will be behavior that can extend to occur over their food bowl. If your Pug is showing food aggression, then you need to train the puppy to learn you are in charge and can pick their bowl up and put it back down at any time — with no aggression from the dog. What you do is put a bowl in front of your Pug then quickly remove it again. Dog trainers tell you to do the loud squeal when the Pug puppy bites you then quickly place your thumb in their mouth, pressing it underneath their tongue. You can then put a finger under the chin. Hold this position for 10 seconds if you can, but not hard enough to hurt the puppy. The Pug will not like it, and it could mean they stop biting you and will learn for next time. Let your Pug know you are in charge Older Pugs that bite will often do it to try to exert dominance over their owner. They can also bite due to jealousy, or when you tell them to do something like get off your chair or bed. You need to train your Pug to realize you are the pack leader and the dominant one. Alphas like us owners, should not be bitten by pack members lower down the chain. Being assertive will help, but often simply rewarding good behavior is enough to get a dog to bend to your will. Socialise your Pug puppy with other dogs Puppies will learn from each other and older dogs. We often look after puppies for our friends. Our friends will often say what a positive impact they see in their young pups after spending a day in the company of our now older dog. And that can include not as much biting. The sooner they can get used to things like this, the sooner they should learn not to bite out of fear. Keep your Pug on a leash when exposing them to new things and noises. Always supervise your puppy when young children are present A Pug that bites a child is a massive problem. There are also specialist animal behaviourists who can help with biting and fear aggression in Pugs. Something to consider though is how long your Pug could be teething for. It can last up until they are 8 months of age, so biting and chewing things is to be expected during this phase. The dangers of a dog bite Adult Pugs that start biting can be dangerous. Whilst they are a small breed, people can get ill from infections. For example, around half of all dog bites will infect the person with bacteria, possibly leading to illness. The result is an open, jagged wound. If the wound becomes infected, it is often severe. The No. You may need hospitalization and require intravenous antibiotics. What do so when bitten by a Pug If you get bitten by a Pug and it leaves a bleeding wound rather than just an abrasion, take the following steps: Press down on the bite wound. This might mean that blood comes out, but that is good as it might help bacteria to come away from the wound. Use clean water and a mild soup to clean the bite wound. Use a clean cloth to press down on the bite wound again as this will help to slow and stop any bleeding. If you have it, apply antibiotic cream to the dog bite wound and then dress it with a new or sterile bandage. If serious, contact a health professional for advice. Conclusion To conclude, some of the quickest ways you can stop a Pug from biting is to make sure you use positive and negative affirmations. In other words, you praise the good, and discourage the bad. Whichever method you try to use, and can be a combination, just make sure that you are consistent when training your Pug puppy to not bite. Tell your friends and family to use the same methods too if they have contact with the puppy. Also, make sure not to exercise them in the heat of the day. For instance, if you know your pups about to bite, you can move your hand away and put a toy in its mouth. As a Pug owner, you can mimic this behavior! When your puppy bites too hard, make a high-pitched yelp or squeal sound. The key to this type of training is to ignore your puppy for a while. The training sounds harsh but does work very well, especially for this breed. Pugs are companion dogs, and they want to please you.
