What type of collar and leash do I need and what size is best for my puppy? We like to buy the less expensive, adjustable-type of collars and a nylon leash. We do not care for the expandable leashes that allow the puppy to walk way out in front or way off to the side of you. The smallest setting for the collar would be about 8 inches and expanding out from there. We use small carabiners to attach the stretched chain between the collar and the leash. This will prevent your puppy from chewing your new leash. If you are reserving a small size pup then I would suggest an XS collar. Another option while they are very young is a slip leash style. Some families like to train in harnesses. This is also a tool you can use. Sizes will vary from company to company, but most go off of weight. Puppy Schedule: AM: The puppies wake up and are carried outside to the designated potty spot right away. They are carried in the beginning to avoid any mistakes before making it out the door. After a few days of this routine, the puppies are able to run outside on their own after being let out of their crates and no longer need carried. Do not play with your puppy outside when you are taking them out to go to the bathroom. Go back inside first and then go back outside to play. Puppies must not be allowed to roam freely in your home. You have to watch the puppies during the playtime to ensure they do not need another bathroom break. Anytime you are not feeding, holding or playing with your puppy, he should be in the crate. This is very important the first few weeks in your home to continue the crate training. If you allow a very young puppy too much time out in your house unsupervised you can expect some accidents. Once a puppy starts to potty in the house it is harder to break that pattern. Keeping an eye on your puppy at all times during this stage is very important so you can catch their signal that they need to go as soon as possible. They will usually sniff the floor in a circular pattern. Just scoop them up and head out the door to the potty spot. After they go potty outside, praise and even reward with a treat. This will speed up the house-training process. Perform this pattern throughout the day. Be sure that you puppy has finished both 1 and 2 outside before allowing them playtime. A lot of puppies will do both things more than once. Do not play with them at this time so they know they are going out for a reason. If they have not done both things outside, place the puppy back in the crate for a little while and then take them outside again before allowing any playtime in the house. Let your puppy spend lots of time with you over the first week in his new home, this will help him gain confidence. This will tell your vet which vaccines your puppy needs, which ones he already has, and any other medical history your vet may need to know. Usually, a routine puppy wellness exam will cover vaccine schedules, routine parasite control and prevention, dental and grooming needs, spay or neuter information, microchipping, and will also include a full-body physical. When they first come home with you, puppies should eat the same food that the breeder was giving them. You may want to continue with this diet for a few days, or even a week whilst your puppy gets settled in. In most cases, your breeder will provide you with information on what they have been feeding your Labradoodle and may even offer you some food to take home with you. After your 9 week old puppy is a little more settled, you can slowly transition their diet to something new. If your Labradoodle is struggling with eating, speak with your veterinarian about supplementing your Labradoodles food. But, if this problem persists, speak to your vet about it and return to their previous diet for the time being. Most 9 week old puppies should eat four small meals a day. However, you can use their meal rations in your training sessions too. Using Food in Training When you train your puppy with positive reward methods, you should use kibble subtracted from their meals, rather than adding the extra treats on top of their daily calorie allowance. Most Labradoodle puppies are very food motivated. But, if your puppy is struggling to concentrate, or seems disinterested, they may not be hungry enough to see the treats as a good reward. Try training before breakfast and other meals to see if this improves their motivation! Food is a great way to reinforce polite behaviors such as keep paws on the floor, and giving attention to human friends. For some puppies these nighttime trips will need to be more frequent, and for others they can be extended. In the day, trips may need to be as frequent as every 20 minutes to avoid accidents. When he does his business, make sure you reward him with lots of praise and a treat. But, try to wait until their bladder is fully empty before rewarding. This is to be expected, so have lots of cleaning supplies on hand. Making sure you get out any potty odor from carpets and flooring is vital to ensuring your puppy does not see the inside of your home as an appropriate place to go to the bathroom. Use an enzyme cleaner to eliminate traces of urine from puppy accidents. Using Puppy Pads Rather than getting up through the night or taking lots of trips outside, some people choose to use puppy pads. But, some Labradoodles will enjoy ripping up puppy pads rather than peeing on them. As we said in the last section, the frequency of this can be as often as every couple of hours. When your puppy first comes home, they may also cry or whine through the night. For the first few days, it can help to keep their bed or crate by your bed, or to sleep next to it. Seeing you will help your 9 week Labradoodle puppy feel a little safer, and less alone. You can gradually move further away from your puppy after those first few nights, but be aware than they may cry through the night if they still feel nervous. Like babies, puppies can get themselves into trouble when left to their own devices. Both playpens and crates are a safe and friendly alternative to leaving your puppy in a closed room or backyard while you are away. Are you considering crate training? If so, rest assured that doing so is not cruel. In fact, when create training is done properly, your puppy will likely be much happier, healthier and well-rounded. Make being in the crate rewarding for your Labradoodle puppy. Hide treats in their for them to find, put them in their to nap through the day, and teach them that being in the crate with the door shut is rewarding. You can place them inside, close the door and open it straight away, offering your puppy a treat. Extend durations in the crate very slowly to avoid any anxiety or problems. Most puppies also happily sleep in their crate at night, and you may find they begin to take themselves there when they want to relax. Your crate should be big enough for your puppy to lie down, turn around, and stand at full height. Too much bigger, and they may use one end as a toilet. Taking your 9 Week Old Labradoodle Puppy Outside A 9 week old Labradoodle puppy is generally too young to go out and be put on the ground. This is because puppies at this age are not fully vaccinated and are therefore at higher risk for serious illnesses. This is quite a troubling conflict for puppy owners. Labradoodle puppies will benefit a lot from socialization, which has been proven to minimize behavioral problems in older dogs. To properly socialize a dog, you need to introduce them to as many new experiences as possible, with positive connotations. You should not put your Labradoodle puppy on the ground until they are fully vaccinated, so you should carry your doodle when socializing them at 9 weeks. Labradoodle puppies grow quickly, and can become quite heavy, so you may need to invest in a puppy sling to carry them with. Let your Labradoodle puppy see other dogs, plenty of people, other animals like cats, vehicles, busy roads, busy school yards, trains, children, and anything else you can think of that they will encounter in adult life. If your Labradoodle puppy seems nervous at any of these new experiences, try observing it from a little further back with plenty of treats. You can also socialize your puppy to things in the safety of your home, like the sound of fireworks, people visiting, and more. Meeting New People Having people over when your puppy is at 9 weeks old can be a great way to socialize them in the home. You can get your visitors to give your puppy treats and reward them for calm behavior. However, be careful not to set up any negative behavior chains whilst doing this, such as letting your puppy jump up at the guest and rewarding them for getting down! Instead, try to reward them before they even jump, and remove any attention if they do jump up. Make sure your guests know exactly how to act around your puppy to prevent them playing too roughly, or accidentally rewarding your pup for unwanted behaviors. Remember, attention can be just as rewarding as food for an excited puppy. Make sure you redirect any biting to toys to avoid those sharp little teeth from causing you too much pain. Biting periods in Labradoodle puppies are completely normal and will pass in time, but it can be frustrating and painful. Make sure you have a safe space to put your puppy for a time out if you need a break from their little teeth. Reward any calm behavior, such as lying in their crate by choice, or playing with a toy. Wear tight clothing and avoid rough play to minimize biting in your Labradoodle puppy. Having a designated puppy zone, like a playpen, can be vital for your sanity when trying to calm down your puppy. Simply place them in their playpen when they are getting a little over-excited so that they have the opportunity to calm down. This can be very useful if you have children in the house that want to play with the puppy .An over-excited puppy may be more prone to unwanted behaviors like barking and biting. Puppies need more sleep than you might think, so a playpen with their crate in can really help them to calm down and get that much needed rest. In fact, once you get into the swing of things, raising your Labradoodle can be an incredibly rewarding and family-friendly experience. Find out how we get chocolate, black or yellow puppies and what color pups we might get when we mix Labradors of different colors. Strictly speaking, there are only three different types of Labrador color: black Labs, brown Labs usually referred to as chocolate and yellow Labs. These are the three colors recognized and accepted by the Kennel Club In practice, there is a wide range of shades of yellow Labrador color, from palest cream to richest fox red. But what makes a Labrador brown, or black, or yellow. And what about Silver Labradors? Where does this new and controversial coat color come in to play? Where do Black and Chocolate Labradors come from? The information that determines whether or not your Labrador is basically black or basically chocolate is passed on through a pair of genes. Why black is a dominant color: It is normal for dominant genes to switch off, or over-ride, recessive genes. And that is exactly what happens here. A dog with BB genes will be black, because he has no little b gene, the one that gives us a brown coat. But a Bb dog will be black too, because if the dominant black gene is present, it switches off the brown gene. How chocolate Labradors are made: Even though a dog inherits a little b gene, the dog will only appear brown if no black gene B is present at all. Two black genes BB gives you a black Labrador One of each Bb also give you a black Labrador Two brown genes bb gives you a chocolate Labrador Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog at the bottom will actually look brown. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. Remember, the dog in the middle of our list above will look black, but pass the brown gene on to about half of all its offspring. But things are never that simple are they? Because of course some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. And these genes have a different kind of power. The result is a yellow dog But little ee is recessive, and if the dominant E gene is present, it switches off the masking gene. It only takes one big E gene to do this. So the dog will only appear yellow if no big E gene is present at all. There are three possible combinations of eee gene that a dog could inherit. There are nine different possible combinations. Nine different possible Labrador genotypes! The chart below lists them genotype is the genetic makeup, phenotype is the appearance of the dog. Non-slip bottom dog dishes Puppies naturally move their dish around as they are eating, especially if the dish has a flat bottom that easily pushes around the floor. We have found that dishes with a non-slip bottom can help so that your puppy is not chasing around his food dish. Make sure that it is large enough. And since dogs grow fast, that means they will likely grow to that size within a year to a year and a half. Almost all dogs we train eat between 4 -6 cups of dog food a day. So, make sure that your dish is large enough to accommodate this many cups. Water dish It is vitally important that your puppy have access to clean water for drinking. With the puppies we raise, we have found that it can be challenging to keep a small water dish full, so we prefer to use these 2-gallon water dishes. They are easy to fill and allow us to only have to fill them a couple times a week instead of several times a day. We suggest that you introduce a lead to your puppy as they start to grow in confidence and walk further from you when outside. There are two great reasons to do this early on. First it teaches your puppy how to handle the pressure of not being able to go wherever they want whenever they want. And it keeps your puppy from developing a habit of running away from you. A Flexi-lead works especially well if you want to give your puppy a little more freedom to go do his potty business but still keep control. Toys Puppies need toys. If you do not give them toys that they CAN chew and play with, they will chew on your sofa leg, or a book or a blanket or anything else they can find. So, purchase some good durable puppy chew toys. But watch your pup carefully. As they get older and stronger, they will be able to rip apart cloth toys and ingest them. Or they will chew rubber toys into small pieces and eat them. When your pup gets strong enough to destroy toys, it is time to take away the puppy toys and give them only dog toys designed for older , larger dogs or quality rawhides that they can chew that will not cause digestive problems. Stay away from rope toys. Many puppies have managed to ingest strings and ropes requiring surgery to remove them. To section off a part, it can be helpful to have some child-gates available or an area of your home that you can close doors. This means that you need to show your puppy where the boundaries are and what is and is not allowed. To do this, you will need a few more tools. This is often when we see dogs that are running away from their owners, playing keep-a-way when retrieving and just basically being naughty. A lot of this could be avoided with the use of a check cord. Yes, a check cord can be cumbersome and often a pain to use, but it only takes one or two times of your puppy running away from you to make it worth it. Put a check cord on your puppy and allow them to drag it around with them. This alone is a great lesson for a dog. Dragging the weight is a type of pressure that they will need to learn to deal with. Occasionally, step on the rope and allow your dog to feel the pressure of being stopped and controlled. These sound like such minor things, but you would be surprised how much more well-adjusted your puppy will be just from learning these minor lessons. Chain or prong collar As your puppy gets stronger, it will get more and more difficult to control your puppy with a lead just hooked up to a nylon collar. As you notice that your puppy is getting harder to control, is pulling you around or dragging you down the street, you need to move to a chain or prong collar. Actually, it would be best if you changed to a chain or prong collar long before this becomes an issue. Remember, it is always easier to fix problems when they are small rather than waiting for them to become huge problems. Larger bumpers for retrieving dogs As your dog gets larger, you will want to move away from the puppy bumper and start using regular sized retrieving bumpers. We prefer to use plastic or rubber bumpers since they do not get as dirty or smelly as the canvas ones. They also last a lot longer and can be used for both water and land retrieves. Orange is a color that is difficult for retrievers to see, so that color should not be used for young dogs that are just learning about retrieving and hunting. Every Labrador has either two genes for a black coat BB or two genes for a brown coat bb or one of each Bb. The color black in Labradors is dominant. That means that if a Labrador has one gene for the color brown, and one gene for the color black, the dog will be black. This is because his black gene switches off the brown one. The brown gene just sits hidden inside him doing nothing in particular, while the black gene takes control of his coat. What about Chocolate Labs? So for a chocolate Lab puppy to be born, he needs to have those two chocolate genes, one is not enough. However, a black Labrador can sneakily carry a brown gene Bb and pass it along to his children. Characteristics that are passed along from parent to puppy. Chocolate Lab size varies quite a bit. Show Labradors English are often more heavily built, and somewhat slower and physically less agile than their field bred counterparts. Some English brown Labs may reach 80 or 90lbs without being fat or overweight. Whereas American chocolate Labs are often lighter. My Rachael, for example, weighs less than 60lbs. Most males of her build will weigh five or ten pounds more. English chocolate Labs are also more likely to have a chunky Labrador head and thick otter tail. And while some feel that the chunkiness of the skull has been taken too far in show lines, there is no denying the beauty of a classic Labrador head. A brown Labrador is more likely to be from these show types of bloodline and are therefore more likely to share these general characteristics. But there is more. Chocolate Lab Temperament American Labs may have a more intense retrieve drive, or urge to chase and retrieve things than their show bred cousins. In short, they are desperate to please. Being chocolate does not make a dog stupid Even if there were a difference in learning ability between different colored dogs, it does not mean that one caused the other. The answer lies in the behavior and temperament of dogs from different bloodlines. Types of chocolate Labs The difference in trainability is in short a feature of the difference between the field bred dog and the show bred dog. Not a feature of the color of the dog. It is a coincidence that many chocolate Labradors are English in type, and many black Labs are American in type. Chocolate Labrador Shades Unlike our yellow Labradors — which come in a wide range of shades, the color chocolate is pretty consistent in puppyhood. Most chocolate Labs are quite similar in color.
