And as it turns out, there are still a handful of dedicated breeders producing world class hunting poodles in North America that are finding their way into our duck blinds and wild bird covers. Advertisement History and Development There is much debate surrounding the origin of the standard poodle. Despite the common claim of it being French, most of the evidence points to Germany. But their real utility began when the matchlock saw popular use in and later with the invention of the flintlock. Both firearms revolutionized duck shooting for market hunters and the like. In this new era of water and gun, the poodle thrived, spreading across Europe in the following centuries. They were swallowed up by England channel hunters in the early s and were favored for a long time by market hunters across the North and Baltic sea. The hunting poodle faced challenges from the beginning in North America. The American Kennel Club AKC unfavorably placed the poodle in the non-sporting group from the start, where it still remains. The Canadian Kennel Club CKC also grouped standard poodles into the non-sporting group in , after only briefly having them in the sporting group. This was no doubt in part due to the introduction of the much smaller, non-sporting, miniature poodle. Modern Hunting Poodles Many of the same qualities that have allowed standard poodles to dominate competitive obedience events for decades are also traits that distinguish them as a gun dog. Poodles are recognized to be one of the smartest of all K-9 breeds, and that intelligence has serious benefits in the field. Another poodle trait that makes them so successful in working capacities is their eagerness to please. In fact, they do much better without it. They are not built for hunting big open water like a Chessie, but they do very well for the average duck hunter. With given opportunity, they also have proven to be fantastic trial dogs in both the retriever circuit and in upland tests. Size and Considerations The standard hunting poodle is around pounds for males and pounds for females, standing inches at the shoulder. With this tall, athletic frame, they are light-footed and capable of great endurance in the field. They have keen noses, and their natural intelligence can nourish some great cover identification and bird-finding ability with proper exposure. They are easy keepers around the home. They are very family-oriented and want to be close to their handler. Poodles are completely hypoallergenic and do not shed, but their coat does need the appropriate trim and some maintenance. If you want to consider a standard poodle for your next gun dog, make sure to go see the parents work yourself. You should also watch how the dog handles. Ensure that the breeder is being responsible in health checks and conformation. Observe the dog around the home. Watch its temperament around children. You should expect to see what you want yourself in a gun dog. With a bit of research and the right breeder, finding a good hunting poodle is a completely achievable target for any wingshooter. First, although considered a single breed, the poodle has three sizes: standard over 15 inches at the withers , miniature 10 to 15 inches and toy under 10 inches. Even the most gullible hunter cannot picture a toy or even a miniature poodle tangling with an outraged, crippled Canada goose. Granted, some folks do hunt miniatures on smaller birds, but in general when we speak of hunting poodles, we mean only the standard size. I'll admit to getting an occasional few minutes of entertainment listening to some dog show handler who has never hunted in his life explain how those fancy trims protect the dog when retrieving in water. In fact, those who hunt their poodles clip them down pretty close to the skin all over, so all that hair is no problem in either water or cover. Advertisement Third, poodles have a reputation as circus dogs, trick dogs, great entertainers--dogs that do humiliating things no self-respecting retriever would even consider. Truth is, the poodle simply has more talent--more smarts, if you will--than most other breeds, so they can do much more than "just" hunt. They love to be trained, love to entertain and love to please, so they will do anything the boss really wants them to do, whether in the circus ring or duck blind. From the Middle Ages, Europeans have always considered the standard poodle a hunting dog. According to Canadian breed historian Emily Cain, Europeans categorized it as a spaniel. However, the French breed name, caniche, comes from chien canard, or "duck dog," so they have also classified it a retriever. In , when CKC recognized the toy poodle, they put both sizes into their non-sporting group. Since , when UKC initiated their retriever hunt tests, several standard poodles have earned the highest titles awarded in those tests. Largely due to the persistent but gentle prodding of poodle breeder and hunter Dr. Grace Blair, in AKC permitted the standard poodle to participate in retriever hunting tests. Since then, several poodles have earned the highest titles awarded in those tests. Clearly, the standard poodle has excellent credentials as a working retriever. Hunters all over the country use them successfully in hunting, and run them just as effectively in various retriever hunt tests. However, most hunting poodles stand much taller, with males 24 to 26 inches and females 22 to 24 inches. Such males weigh 45 to 60 pounds; such females weigh 40 to 50 pounds. These dogs are tall and lithe rather than short and stocky. Being lean and muscular, they have boundless energy and great stamina. Being highly athletic whence comes their trick-dog image , they move with attractive grace and style. Now for the typical hunter's No. The coat may be any of several solid colors, most commonly black, gray, brown, apricot and white. Notably, this coat doesn't shed. That makes it every homemaker's favorite among canine coats. No dog hairs on the rug, sofa, bed or wherever. Then, too, this coat is hypoallergenic, which makes it the choice of dog lovers who are allergic to breeds that shed. Since it doesn't shed, if left untrimmed the coat will grow continuously. When it gets long enough, the fur braids itself into long cords that drag on the floor. Thus, every poodle must be trimmed regularly, which is a time-consuming job, even for a professional groomer, and an expensive job for amateurs who choose not to trim their own poodles. But--and for hunters this is a most important but--no law, rule or directive requires a hunter to keep his poodle in those outlandish dog show trims that make the dog look like a sissified male lion. Au contraire, the hunter may, can and should keep his poodle's coat trimmed down to somewhere around one inch long all over. At that length it curls tightly up against the skin. Although trimming a poodle this way takes time and effort, it requires neither tonsorial skill nor artistic talent. Of course, it must be done frequently, say once a month. Thusly trimmed, the coat protects the dog in all but bone-chilling water. It will also protect him from upland briars and brambles. It does pick up burrs, but the boss can easily pluck them out with a dog comb or rake. To help slide them out easily, some hunters first spray a little cooking oil on each burr. Several years ago, a lady told me about being grabbed by a man as she got into her car in a shopping mall parking lot. Her poodle came out of the car, attacked the man and frightened him off. Another woman told me that when a houseguest once accidentally wandered into her daughter's bedroom, her poodle grabbed the intruder's skirt and tugged on it to lead the woman out of that room. When protecting their owners, poodles seem to have good judgment, applying no more force than necessary. Incidentally, both of these aforementioned poodles were also hunters that had earned advanced hunting test titles. The typical poodle loves to learn to do new things. He loves performing, especially before an appreciative audience, and he's tireless when working. However, he learns quickly and is therefore easily bored, much like the brightest human student in class. Thus repetitive drills, like those for the three parts of the blind retrieve lining, stopping and casting , can bring out the creativity in a bored poodle. After mastering, say, a particular line, instead of repeating it perfectly over and over, he may experiment and try new things, which is counter-productive in drills. For this reason, the trainer must be more creative than his dog. He must drill him in ways that don't seem repetitive, like mixing in shot flyers or fun dummies between repetitions of a given drill. The typical poodle also needs a training program that is predominantly positive. He wants to please, so if the boss 'splains what he wants well enough, the pooch will need few corrections. Expressed appreciation for a job well done works wonders with a poodle. An over-corrected poodle shuts down, quits cold and may not revive for some time. He is a house dog, not a kennel dog. Living in the house allows him to bond strongly with the boss, and figure the boss out from the canine perspective. Since he wants to please the boss so much, this understanding can make him seem like a mind reader in the field. He needs that to develop properly in the field. He can hunt waterfowl in any of the various ways: from a shore blind, from a boat, from a field blind and in jump-shooting. He may not take to water as naturally as a Chesapeake Bay retriever, but he can learn to love it, especially if given an early start as a puppy. Neither has any problem body-slamming an irate, crippled Canada goose and bringing it back alive. This took training, but they took to it quite easily. They like to please. Then get two toddler shirts, again with sizing depending on the size of your dogs chest and caboose area. Then get a 12 count bottle beer case of whatever beer you'd like your dog to haul around. Cut the bottom of the case to form to the back of your dog so that it slides right over the top of their body. Obtain a dog stuffed animal for the back of the dog, and place the toddler shirt onto the rear shirt. You'll probably need to cut a hole in the front of the shirt and stick your dogs legs through the shirt while the stuffed animal is still inside of it. Stuff the arms of the front shirt with some sort of padding and make it look like your dogs arms are sticking out of them. Either cut a hole in the back of the front shirt to allow your dogs body to flow through it it looks like you could also just let the shirt hang down without having to cut a hole. Attach the fake arms on the front to the beer case as well. Put your dogs front legs through the other pair of pants. The Pug is considered a member of the toy group and is, in fact, the largest of the toy breeds. I have been a big dog person all my life and it was our son who wanted a Pug, after falling in love with Frank from Men in Black. So we brought a Pug home to become a member of our family and a companion to our 5 year old male Boxer. Our new Pug puppy was jumping up on her expen, not the least bit afraid of our Boxer but instead wanting only to play with him. Such a little dog had such a big dog attitude that I instantly became a Pug lover. It was not long before she asserted herself as the head of the dog household, and our Boxer became her companion, not the other way around as we had expected. The Pug migrated to Holland thanks to the trade routes that opened in China. In Holland the breed was at first called the Dutch Mastiff, which is pretty funny considering the size of the Mastiff breeds we see today. The Pug became quite popular in Europe around the 16th century and was especially prized by the royal families there also. The Pug as we know it today did not get its name until the 17th or 18th century. Pugs are named after the nickname given to Marmoset Monkeys, which were popular pets at the time; these pet monkeys were called Pugs. The Pug we know today shares many of the facial characteristics of these monkeys and so the name stuck. While our Pug was still a puppy we discovered that she looked an awful lot like a Bat when we held her ears straight up. I am sure glad that the folks in 17th century Europe did not try that trick- Bat would not be as cute a name for this awesome breed. The Pug we know and love today is one of the oldest breeds recognized by the AKC. The first Pug was registered with the AKC in .The Pug is also one of the most popular among the breeds recognized by the AKC, consistently ranking in the top 30 of all breed registrations. The Pug is the largest of the Toy Breeds and is a squarely built dog with a relatively large head embellished with deep wrinkles. The wrinkles in the forehead were one of the characteristics that endeared the ancient Pug to Chinese royalty, if the wrinkles resembled the symbol for a royal rank these Pugs were prized above all others. The Pug stands inches at the shoulder. The optimal weight for a Pug of average size is pounds. I have seen my Pug be tenacious and stubborn but easily redirected with the promise of a cookie. An intelligent breed, they are highly trainable, but can be stubborn if not properly motivated. Someone once described the Pug to me as gaily mischievous, I have seen this first hand as our Pug will wait until one of our other dogs has finished their treat and then coyly walk past them with her treat still in her mouth and sit in front of them while she finishes it. This is a playful breed always ready for a game, but not particularly adept at fetch because their pushed in muzzle and bulbous eyes do not make them great retrievers. Pugs can be good alarm dogs and are very patient with children. They enjoy the company of other dogs however, they particularly enjoy the company of other Pugs. This may explain why Pug owners often own more then one at a time. In fact, Pugs compete in every sport which they are eligible for, including obedience, agility and tracking. It is great to see Pugs compete in these events; it keeps their sharp minds sharp and provides them with the exercise they need to stay healthy and avoid the obesity seen in many Pugs. There are training books available and training classes offered all over the country. Check around for an experienced trainer or a class near you. Even if you do not intend to have your Pug be anything more then a companion, you should still consider obedience classes, especially basic obedience classes that are offered for puppies over 6 months of age. Pugs are smart and social dogs that really enjoy class. Organized class gives them an opportunity to flex their brains and their muscles. GROOMING The Pug is one of the easier pets to groom based on their size and their short coat, however, they do require some special attention because of they have facial folds and bulbous eyes. It is important to clean under their facial folds and wrinkles. The easiest way to do this is with a cotton ball or Q-Tip dipped in a mild cleaning solution you can use an ear cleaner so there is no need to purchase additional grooming products Be sure to dry under the folds after cleaning as moisture under the folds is a breeding ground for fungus. A word to the wise, Pugs shed excessively Our little Pug sheds more than our 70 pound Boxer. Because of this, I strongly recommend that you brush your Pug daily. This brush distributes the coat oil through the coat while removing dander and dead hair. A curry mitt is also an acceptable choice. You can use a shedding tool like the Furminator or a power De-shedder, but my Pug is never cooperative when I try to use these. Frequent baths, every 6 weeks, will also help keep shedding to a minimum but be sure to use a gentle or all natural shampoo like Richards Organics Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. Pug mouths tend to have a lot of teeth in a small space and they are crowded and crooked so it is extremely important that you brush regularly. There are many good products available to help make this task easier. General upkeep of your Pug should include keeping his nails short, either by cutting them or perhaps grinding them with a rotary grinder, like a Dremel. Another word to the wise, Pugs are notorious for not wanting to have their paws touched. Clipping or grinding their nails is often an arduous task if not undertaken with much love and a little bit of courage. You may decide to leave this particular task to the professionals. It is best to clip nails on a counter or a grooming table, someplace she is not accustom to standing as this will help focus her attention away from what you are actually doing. However they do have some unique health concerns. With their short, pushed in face, Pugs can have trouble breathing, especially in high heat and humidity and even when traveling by plane. They must be kept cool and exercised with caution in the summer. Stay away from foods that contain corn, wheat or soy as these are common allergens. The Pugs eyes also have a tendency to pop out of their sockets. This unfortunately happened to my Pug while playing with one of our other dogs. The eye could not be saved. It was a sad day in our house, but our resilient Pug has bounced back. Because of the tendency for Pug eyes to pop out when pressed or pushed some people do not recommend that Pugs take up residence in a house with cats, as cats are known to use their paws to bat the faces of their play mates. Coat colors come in apricot, fawn, black and silver. Temperament The Pug is keen, with a happy-go-lucky attitude. Animated, peppy and spirited, it is loyal, loving and affectionate with its family. Playful, lively and rambunctious, it is sure to keep you laughing. Highly intelligent, it bores easily without variety in its training. These dogs can be a bit willful if they sense they are stronger minded than the humans around them. Pugs are sensitive to the tone of your voice, so harsh punishment is unnecessary. They need an owner who is calm, yet firm, confident and consistent with the rules. This dog is neither excitable nor dull. They are good watchdogs, very devoted and are not yappers. Pugs get along well with other dogs and pets, and they behave impeccably with both children and visitors. Be sure to be your Pug's pack leader. Pugs that do not have strong human leaders can become jealous, and begin to display guarding behaviors, such as guarding furniture , food, toys, or other spots in the house. This behavior only happens when dogs are allowed to take over. These behaviors can be corrected when the owners start displaying the proper leadership. They are prone to allergies and the short muzzle contributes to chronic breathing problems, making the Pug tend to wheeze and snore. Pugs suffer from poor ventilation. Prone to skin problems. Prone to mast cell tumors. The cause is unknown. They are not the easiest whelpers. There is a chance of Keratitis inflammation of the cornea and ulcers on the cornea. Eyes are prone to weeping and cherry eye. Do not overfeed a Pug, as they will eat more than is good for them, quickly becoming obese and living much shorter lives. Living Conditions The Pug is good for apartment life. It is relatively inactive indoors and will do okay without a yard. Cannot withstand hot or cold weather and should be kept indoors at a comfortable temperature. Exercise Pugs are strong dogs with short, straight legs. They need to be taken on daily walks. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. They enjoy energetic games and will keep in better health if given regular exercise. But be careful not to overdo it, especially if you see them start to wheeze. Life Expectancy About 12 to 15 years. Litter Size About 2 -6 puppies Grooming The smooth, shorthaired coat is easy to groom. Brush and comb with a firm bristle brush and shampoo only when necessary. Dry thoroughly after a bath so the dog does not get chilled. The creases on the face must be cleaned regularly. This breed is an above average shedder. Origin The Pug is one of the oldest breeds known today, believed to have originated before BC. There is somewhat of a debate over the origin of the Pug. Most researchers agree that the Pug originated from Asia, descended from a shorthaired Pekingese. Another theory is that it is the result of crossing a small Bulldog , while others speculate that it is a miniature form of the French Mastiff Dogue de Bordeaux. The artist Hogarth had a Pug named "Trump" that he often depicted in his works. The breed became popular during Victorian times in the 19th century. Tibetan monasteries kept Pugs as pets. The breed made its way to Japan and Europe, where it not only became a pet of royalty but the official dog of the House of Orange in Holland. Prince William II owned Pugs. One dog in particular was said to have saved his life in at Hermingny, when the dog barked at approaching Spaniards alerting him of their presence. On their wedding night, when Napoleon refused to allow the dog to sleep in their bed, Josephine told him, "If the Pug does not sleep in our bed, neither do I! In when the British took over the Chinese Imperial Palace, they discovered several Pugs and Pekingese, and the dogs were brought back to England with them.
