By testing for things like eye, cardiac, and joint issues and by DNA testing for several common genetic conditions common to golden retrievers, I can ensure I am doing all I can to produce healthy puppies that grow into long-lived, healthy dogs. For a good number of years, peer reviewed studies and vets and breeders whom I trust have agreed that early spay or neuter is very dangerous to the short- and long-term health of dogs. Everything from orthopedic issues, cancers, and fear of storms can be blamed in part on early spay and neuter. At the very least, I want my dogs to remain intact not spayed or neutered for long enough for the hormones to do their job getting the pups' bones and bodies to maturity. For girls, they should remain intact for at least two heat cycles, and for boys ideally until at least 2 years. I can tell you my boys do not reach full physical maturity until around three, so for their bones, joints, and skulls and other things less obvious to fully mature, I'd prefer they not be neutered ever, but at least not until they are three. Neutering a dog does not affect his instinct to mark. Training affects that. Neutering does not affect his instinct to mount other dogs as a dominance play. Training does. Neutering an aggressive dog does not alleviate his aggressiveness. Neutering a dog does greatly increase his risk of cancers common in goldens. You can often identify a dog spayed or neutered young by its disproportionately long, gangly legs. Those growth plates in the legs were still open when the hormones were removed from the dog, and growth no longer could continue in a balanced way. Buyers are often looking for good bone and big heads on their goldens, particularly the boys. Those things come with maturity while the hormones are intact. What is your guidance on vaccination? My general rule is to keep vaccinations to a minimum. I am not an antivaxer; vaccinations are vital to our dogs' health. For example, without vaccination, parvo kills puppies. I know breeders and dog owners who have lost puppies to parvo. These diseases we vaccinate against are serious. However, I believe in limiting vaccinations to the ones required, at the frequency required. My puppies will have their first round of puppy vaccinations before they go to their homes. After that, vaccinations need only be done if the dog needs additional protection. Titer testing will tell you if that is the case. My foundation bitch received puppy shots and then no further vaccinations other than periodic 3-year rabies as required by law where I live. Seven Week Old Baby German Shepherd When we move into the seventh week of their life, a new significant phase of development starts to begin: the fear period. While this sounds disconcerting, it merely means that this is the time that many puppies begin to show fear towards new things, rather than curiosity. Things that the puppy may find scary or uncertain during this time can make for big changes in their personality throughout life. For example, if a puppy has a bad experience with a human at this stage, it may lead them to becoming fearful and distrustful towards people for the rest of their life. This is why gently exposing the puppies to humans and common sights and sounds beforehand is important. By preemptively socializing the puppies with humans, we can help this period run smoother. The puppies will have reached weights of around pounds and should be around inches tall. Their ears will lie flat but should begin to become erect and upright over the coming weeks. They will be fully independent of their mother at this age. They should be completely weaned, with some basic training and socialization. From here, new owners are expected to continue to train and socialize them, as they are still within a critical period of development. There are a variety of reasons to crate train your dog. Use your crate: [25] X Research source To keep your puppy safe when you cannot watch her. To keep your belongings safe when you cannot watch your puppy. When your puppy is home alone. To give your puppy a place to calm down. When traveling. To keep your puppy away from children or other dogs. To aid in house training and other behavioral training. Never use your crate to punish your dog. And once your dog is no longer a puppy and can be trusted not to destroy the house, do not crate your dog when you are away. Save the crate for special times — i. For the most part, your dog should enter her crate voluntarily. The type of crate you use is up to personal preference, though many find that wire crates are the most durable and comfortable long-term solutions for dogs as well as being used at most kennels where you might board your dog. The most important thing is that you get the right size crate. If it is too small, your dog will not be comfortable. If it is too large, it will provide the den-like space dogs crave. Your dog should be able to stand in the crate without hitting her head, to turn around comfortably, and to lie on their side with their paws stretched out. Also buy a divider if purchasing the crate for your puppy. Your dog should enjoy her crate. It should provide a comfortable place for her to relax, so much so that she should choose to spend time there. Make sure to: [28] X Research source Put the crate in a room where you spend lots of time, so your puppy does not feel abandoned. Keep it a comfortable temperature: out of direct sunlight and far from fireplaces and radiators. Place soft bedding inside. Place chew toys inside to give your dog something to do. Cover your wire crate with a towel or crate cover. This will give it more of the den-like feel your dog craves. If you do it well, crate training will be much easier. Throw some new dog toys in, too. Let your dog explore the crate on her own. Let her go at her own speed. Every hour or so put more treats in the crate when your dog is not looking. Be sure to subtract all these treats from their daily food allowance. Also start feeding your dog in the crate. At first, put the bowl just inside so they only have to poke their head in. After 2 or 3 successful feedings, move it to the middle, then all the way back. Show your dog a treat and toss it in the crate. Move away and wait for her to leave the crate. Always use your cue words. Repeat the whole ritual several times a day until your dog is happily entering the crate to fetch treats. After tossing a treat in once or twice to warm your dog up, use your command word without a treat. If she enters, praise profusely and give a treat or two. Also praise her when she leaves. Repeat this training several times a day for two or three days, until your dog is entering and leaving the crate on command. If your golden puppy struggles with this step, go back to the previous one. Ask your puppy to enter the crate and sit. Slowly close the door. If you have to bang it shut before your dog escapes, then she is not ready for this step. When the door is closed, praise and give treats, then open the door and let her leave. Gradually lengthen the time they must sit in the crate before you let them out. Do sessions of training where they wait ten seconds, then 30, 45, and a minute. When your dog can comfortably stay in the crate for a minute, you will want to start moving away while she is in the crate. In the first session, move only a few feet away before you come back. Move to different areas of the room and keep looking at your dog. Next, try training sessions where you move around the room without paying attention to your puppy. Add moments when you step out of the room briefly and return. Finally, leave the room. At first, stay out for only five minutes. Gradually increase the time you are gone to 30 minutes. Go back to the previous step or reduce the time you are leaving her. Always remove your puppies leash and collar before putting her in the crate, as they are choking hazards. For a puppy, these will need to be shorter trips, as a puppy cannot be expected to go more than 3 hours or so without urinating. She needs to be able to get up and stretch her legs. Vary the time you put your dog in the crate. Sometimes do it ten minutes before you go. Sometimes five. Sometimes right before you head out the door. Praise your dog for entering her crate, then go. Now that your puppy is comfortable in her crate, she can sleep there overnight, but be sure you can hear her. Puppies often need to pee in the middle of the night. We are overjoyed for you! Some Fun Tricks and Commands to Teach Your Dog One of the best parts of raising a Golden Retriever puppy, is seeing first hand how smart they are and how much they love learning new things. Here are a few just for fun things you can teach your dog. Bring it. Point to a toy or object and have them bring it to you. Turn off the light once they are big enough to reach the switch. Off is easier than on but they can learn that too. Jump through the hoop. All you need is a simple hula hoop and a partner. Note Golden Retriever puppies should not jump higher than a inches before 6 months. They should not jump more than shoulder height before 1 year of age when their growth plates are closed. High five. Yup this is exactly what it sounds like, having your pup give you a high five. Be careful not to use the same hand signals for other commands. For example holding your hand up by your shoulder usually means sit, so you should hold your hand in a different spot for high five. It comes as a set with a ball thrower and a ball but you can get the balls separately if needed. The good news is that inside is a regular Kong toy so even after they remove the fabric, your pup will still have a toy to play with. The Wubba is great because they or you can throw it around, play tug, or just fetch it. They do come smaller for younger puppies. This needs to start early with letting them get used to normal things like brushing, bathing, and dental care. You should gently brush your Golden Retriever puppy as often as times a week for just a few minutes. It is not that they need it, as much as you are training them that the brush is nice and feels good. Wait until they are sleepy and treat it like a petting session at first until they get used to the idea. I find that there is not much of a need to put dates in the calendar because they find something to get into that necessitates a bath every couple of weeks. The first veterinary visit should be right after you bring your puppy home even if the breeder or shelter has already started their puppy shots. At that visit your veterinarian will make sure your pup is healthy and recommend the preventative care your pup needs. This may include a series of vaccinations to protect against common infectious diseases, heartworm and intestinal worm preventatives, and flea and tick medication. Limit their access to your home Getting used to a new home with two rooms will be a lot easier than getting used to a new home with five rooms. Only let your puppy have access to a few rooms so that they get acclimated to their new area quicker, then as they get more comfortable you can allow them to explore new areas of the house. You can use baby gates to restrict access to sections of the house. Bonus benefit: this will also decrease the chances that they leave you a present in the guest room. This condition is thought to develop due to a weakening of connective tissues. If cherry eye is not treated quickly, it can lead to other very serious issues. It is very rare for this to happen to both eyes at the same time, but once it happens to one eye it's very common for it to occur in the other within a few months. Signs of this include a pink or red bump that significantly protrudes out over the sclera the white part of the eye. This is treated with corrective surgery in which a small section of the nictitating membrane is removed and stitches are placed to secure the remaining tissue back into its proper place. Eyelash Abnormalities - Distichiasis and Ectopic Cilia Both of these issues involve the abnormal growth of eyelashes. With distichiasis, a condition Pugs are moderately prone to, one or more eyelash grows in an odd direction out from the eyelid. With ectopic cilia, a condition seen less commonly with Pugs, one or more eyelash grows through the inside of the eyelid toward the eye. With either condition, when an eyelash pokes into the eyeball, it is extremely painful and can lead to corneal ulcers. Although an offending eyelash can be plucked out, offering immediate relief, it is often temporary since it usually regrows within 4 to 5 weeks. For this reason, a minor procedure is often performed to remove both the eyelash and the follicle to prevent any reoccurrence. Entropion Entropion, also referred to as inverted or folded-in lid, is an inherited condition in which either the upper or lower eyelid rolls inward. This is moderately common with Pugs, usually involves the lower eyelids, and typically develops within the first year. This is mainly a genetic condition linked to tension in the ligaments of the inner eye but can also be triggered by rapid weight loss or can develop alongside chronic eye infections. While the inverted lid itself will irritate the eye, there are other issues that can develop. Eyelashes that that point inward can scratch the surface of the eye, leading to corneal ulcers. And, any scar tissue that may form after a scratch that can lead to vision problems or even vision loss in some cases. In very minor cases, and if the cornea is not ulcerated, the eyelid may be temporarily stitched back into place and artificial-tear medication given. However, in most cases, this needs to be resolved with corrective surgery to permanently reposition the eyelid back into position. Corneal Abrasions and Ulcerations The cornea is the clear, shiny membrane that makes up the surface of the eyeball and because Pugs have very prominent eyes, corneal abrasions and ulcers are not uncommon. A corneal abrasion is a scrape that only affects the epithelium 1st layer. A corneal ulcer is a scrape through the whole epithelium 1st layer and into the basement membrane 2nd layer or stroma 3rd layer. The most common cause of abrasions and ulcerations is trauma to the eye which can be anything from debris entering a Pug's eye to rubbing the head along the ground resulting in a scratch. This is also linked to entropion, chronic eye infections, keratoconjunctivitis sicca dry eye , canine diabetes, and hypothyroidism. Signs include moderate to severe pain a Pug may paw at the eye or rub the eye area against surfaces , sensitivity to light, keeping the eye closed, discharge in some cases. Exact treatment will depend on whether there is a corneal abrasion, ulcer, or descemetocele. Corneal abrasions generally are treated with topical antibiotics and often the use of a protection cone collar to prevent a dog from pawing at the eye and typically heal in 1 week or less. For corneal ulcers or descemetocele, treatment varies. For moderate cases, surgery may be performed to temporarily stitch the eyelid closed to allow it to heal. If both eyes are affected, each eye may be alternatingly treated. For more serious cases, other surgery including grafts or transplants may be required. If an ulcer does not heal as expected, there can be a buildup of dead cells on the rim of the ulcer which prevent normal cells from repairing the tear. If this happens, the dead cells are removed and surgical closing of the eyelids may follow. If there is no improvement after days of treatment, bring your Pug back to the vet to be reexamined. Pigmentary Keratitis Pigmentary keratitis refers the migration of brown melanin pigment from the iris into the sclera white area of the eye. This can range from minor which has no affect on vision to severe melanin covers the pupil, leading to blindness. Early detection plays a huge role in successfully managing and treating this.
