Do not use duct tape or electrical tape. These types of tape are too adhesive and could damage your puppy's ears. You will also need glue Skin Bond adhesive is recommended and one or two unsharpened 2 pencils. A popsicle stick will be needed to serve as a 'bridge' between your puppy's ears after you have taped them. Remove the plastic rod from the middle of the roller. Next, insert the unsharpened pencil about 1 inch into the middle opening of the roller—this will help you stabilize the roller when you position it inside the ear. You will then apply the glue about three-fourths of the way around the circumference of the roller. If you apply too much, the glue could run into your puppy's ear canal and potentially cause irritation. The glue could also drip onto your hands, which would make it difficult for you to easily maneuver your hands. If you prefer to use the tape, you will not need to put the pencil in the roller. Proper positioning of the foam roller is important so that you do not block your puppy's ear canal and impair his ability to hear. Place the roller inside the ear near the bottom half of the ear flap. Make sure there is two fingers' worth of space between the bottom of the roller and your puppy's head. Holding the pencil end of the roller, wrap the ear around the roller. While continuing to hold the pencil end, start taping at the top of the ear in a circular motion and work your way down. Plain masking tape like you find in the paint section of a hardware store is an alternative often used as well for this process since it does not have such a terrific adhesive property like many tapes do. If you don't have the right kind of tape it will do more damage on the developing GSD puppies ears than good, so wait and get the correct supplies first before attempting to do this. Eyelash Glue is another alternative to use in place of the skin bond adhesive. Now, here's the process of German Shepherd ear taping: First, insert the pencil unsharpened end into the pink foam roller about an inch or so to make it easier for you to hold later on. Important: You do not want the glue to drip off the roller into your pups ear canal when ear taping your GSD puppies ears. You do not want to get the glue on your hands either while in the middle of this process. That is where the pencil comes in - to help you hold the roller steady while applying the skin bond adhesive to it. Optional step: If you decide not to use glue for some reason, you can cover the sponge roller all over with an adhesive tape such as a masking tape or surgical tape with the sticky side facing outward in place of the glue. Next, remove the pencil from the sponge roller by gently pulling it out from the top. Do NOT leave the pencil in after taping is complete! It is important to place the roller inside the German Shepherd's ear flap itself near the bottom half of the ear flap, leaving about a two finger's worth of opening above the German Shepherd puppies head and the bottom of the roller inside the ear flap. Do not completely block the ear canal with the roller when ear taping the German Shepherd puppy. The German Shepherd puppy will still need to hear with the roller inside its ear flaps. Optional: Some people take a popsicle stick and attach it to the top part of both of the GSD puppy ears in a horizontal position after taping the ears. I have never tried this method myself. It is thought that eventually the GSD puppy will forget about the tape all together and leave the ears alone. The roller will fall out on it's own in about a week or so if not taken out by you or by your your German Shepherd puppy ahead of time. Continue the re-taping process as needed until the German Shepherd puppy ears stand on their own. Optional: Detachol Adhesive Remover is used to remove tapes, bandages and, of course, Liquid Adhesive. Important: If the German Shepherd puppy ears are not up by 7 or 8 months of age they are probably not going to come up on their own. I have no experience with this personally but if you have a German Shepherd whose ears will not stand on their own, this is a potential option. Upright ears are not only healthier overall for the dog, but more so, they are handsome and again, part of the breed standard, and also the way the German Shepherd was bred to look. If you ain't the lead dog, the scenery never changes. I get a lot of emails about taping German Shepherd puppy ears. The majority of these emails come from people who are jumping the gun and worrying too much. By that, I mean their pups are 3 or 4 months old and they are starting to panic because their puppy's ears are not standing. I tell these people that they need patience, they need to wait until their pup has finished teething. I caution these people not to jump the gun and tape the dog's ears too early or in the wrong way. I know people who have screwed their dog's ears up for life by doing this. I have had puppy customers who go ballistic on me and panic. So I issue a word of caution here. With that said, the other side of the spectrum of taping ears is something that many people do not take seriously until it's too late. I have seen ears that did not stand, which in my opinion would have stood had they been taped. So this process is not something to take lightly. I also need to say that many ears will be a little weak right after taping but with time, they will strengthen. So when an ear does not stand perfectly after taping don't panic. Just have patience and see what happens. You will really not have an idea exactly what you have until the pup is 12 months old. When ears do not stand, there are ear implants that can be surgically added. I have no experience with this and do not know anything about them. If you are unlucky enough to have a dog whose ears will not stand, I would point you toward a vet that has some experience in this area. My son was waiting and I did not gave the heart to tell my ten year old son we didn't get the puppy. The breeders know it was for my young son, and said nothing about the health issues in any way, knowing that after I travelled I would probably buy the puppy if my son was with me as I said he was excited. Not a lot of grooming is required other than their nails and face wrinkles along with other normal grooming requirements. I do not recommend getting a boxer if you won't give your companion a lot of attention and if they don't have enough room to run around. He lived 10 years and died of lung cancer. He was raised in a no smoking house and ate life abundance dog food his whole life. He was my best friend, loyal, sociable and very obedient. He was high energy until he died. He was confident and was not shy. Our guests were his guests. He was a blessing to our home. She was the most even tempered, kid friendly dog I have ever met. They claimed they were 12 weeks old. I took them to the vet immediately. They were vomiting up eggshells, hay, and brown material. They were not from the same litter. The vet estimated they were from 3 separate litters; one was an adult. The male puppies had two sets of testicles. The female was ectrodactyly. They were inbred. It cost double to fix each male because they had to clip the descended testicles and surgically remove the crypto set. When a live-action remake of the movie came out in , their popularity surged again. This time, though, the press began reporting on a perhaps predictable consequence: Dalmatians were winding up in shelters in higher-than-usual numbers. Travel-size mini-Aussies, with their colorful coats and tendency toward eye colors more often found in humans, also had a moment. And untold curly-haired hybrid doodles have become popular thanks to their hypoallergenic fur. On Instagram, the most popular dog breeds currently are Frenchies, pugs, and bulldogs, which, in turn, only make them more popular. Their flat faces scream cute while the high prices for a puppy make them as aspirational as multi-step skin care routines, Le Creuset kitchenware, and living in a remodeled van. Dogs were bred for purpose, not aesthetics. A foxhound in one part of the country was taller or shorter depending on the style of hunting. Retrievers were any dog a hunter trained to retrieve game without biting it. Greyhounds looked different depending on whether their intended racing course was located on flat or hilly ground. The change from purpose to aesthetics came about with the beginning of dog shows in the mids. Judging animals based on how well they did a certain task, like retrieving a bird their owner hunted, was hard; judging whether they were the right color, height, shape … well, that could be done quickly and seemingly more fairly. So, by definition, all purebred dogs are inbred, related to each other in one way or another. The development of purebreds made it easier to show dogs and sell them. More than ever, their worth was tied to their genetics. Throughout the 20th century, however, Americans got better at mass-producing everything — cars, clothing, meat — and purebred dogs became another mass-produced consumer item newly available to the middle class. Tellingly, none of the features humans seek are particularly beneficial for the animals. We expect the latest iPhone or laptop to operate smoothly and improve battery life with every generation but keep breeding dogs with more likelihood of disease, disability, and early death. On average , the life span of purebred dogs is shorter than that of mixed breeds. But so far, no one has found a way to make thousands of dollars from a genuinely mixed-breed puppy. That left two guide-dog puppies without homes. At the time, Labrador guide dog puppies had a three- to six-month waiting list but nobody wanted these mixes, creator Conron said in a interview. After that, Bernstein says, people realized that if you could breed dogs to be hypoallergenic, you could also breed for big eyes or long ears, or a spotted Frenchie, or a dog so small it could be photographed sitting comfortably inside a teacup. For some, that might mean owning an Instagram-friendly Frenchie or Pomeranian. For others, it might be rescue dogs that have become trendy for the same virtue-signaling reasons that people proudly drive electric cars or shop at the farmers market. But even as the AdoptDontShop movement gains traction, more people still buy dogs than adopt them, and every year , shelter dogs are euthanized rather than finding homes. But it can be for dogs that are bred to fill a fad. What kind is it? It takes a lot of time to get to know a dog, and we have to choose based on first impressions. One study found that among 31 owners of dogs with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS , 18 reported their dogs had no breathing problems at all. Kipperman knows that these dogs, despite their health problems, are beloved by their owners. He had a pug named Winston for 13 years who has since died. I understand what great companions they are. When breeders are located outside of the United States, as is often the case for Frenchies and other trendy breeds, treatment can be even worse for the puppies. By the time the plane landed, 38 had died. Dogs entering the US for resale are supposed to be 4 months old and have certain vaccinations, but dogs often arrive much younger than that, and veterinary paperwork is often falsified. In her rescue work, Bernstein has encountered multiple businesses in the US that import dogs while claiming to breed them locally. This is what it takes to fill that instant demand. When asked about the future of the Frenchie, both Bernstein and Kipperman had grim predictions. Today, the average life span of an English bulldog is now only about six years. Sixty percent of golden retrievers now die from cancer , though the rate was comparable to other breeds only a few decades ago. Dogs that are overly fluffy or have cosmetic alterations like cropped ears or docked tails may have trouble communicating with other dogs. For some dogs, the circumstances of their birth and genetics are profoundly damaging. Frenchies are marketed as easy, friendly dogs that can adapt to anything and need minimal exercise. Bernstein calls this ironic. But is it fair to our dogs that being a good owner so often consists of fixing the problems we as consumers created in the first place?
