Methodology To find the best dog subscription boxes, our team reviewed nearly two dozen services, evaluating each one on the following criteria: Average price Number of items per box Variety of products. Size-specific boxes like those offered by BarkBox ensure the toys and treats are appropriately sized for your dog's breed. This prevents potential choking hazards and ensures your dog can enjoy the products safely. Consider materials: If your dog is an aggressive chewer, a box designed for heavy chewers, like the Bark Super Chewer , would be more suitable. These boxes typically include durable toys made from tougher materials that can withstand powerful jaws. If your dog is less interested in chewing, choose a box with softer, plush toys. Customizable options: Take note of what gets your dog excited. Some boxes are more treat-oriented, providing a wide variety of snacks, while others emphasize exciting new toys. Pet Treater has options for treat only or toy only boxes to suit every dog. Puppy-Oriented Box: If you're a pet parent to a young fur baby, selecting a puppy-oriented subscription box can make a significant difference. Puppies have different needs compared to adult dogs, so a box specifically designed for puppies, like the PupBox from Petco , can better cater to those unique requirements. In spite of their size, they think they are lap dogs, and in spite of being dogs, they think they are also human, and nearly every human they meet is judged to have the potential to be a boon companion who might, at many moment, cry, "Let's go! I do not have a wait list. I have golden retriever puppies for sale perhaps once or twice a year. Because I breed infrequently, I can not guarantee I will have a puppy that meets your needs by any set time. I'd hate to have families waiting for a puppy and find I do not have one for them. After a litter arrives and I know what I have in terms of numbers and gender, then I can get serious about reviewing questionnaires submitted by interested families, and I contact people to discuss the specifics once the pups are a few weeks old. The pups require a great deal of time and attention, so it can take me a little while after a litter arrives to get to this part of the placement process. Please keep in mind that I breed golden retriever puppies in northern Virginia, and I do not ship puppies. Do I get to pick which pup I want? I place the pups based on the pups' individual characteristics and each family's specific requirements. I obviously take your preferences into consideration, but your puppy's personality should fit the lifestyle you'll have with him for the next 12 or so years. I raise the pups in my home. For their first few weeks the pups are in my family room with my family, other dogs, and cats, and, after they are old enough and need more room to move freely, the pups move to a large pen in my basement with access to an outdoor pen. All of my dogs are house dogs; the pups are not raised in a kennel. As the pups mature, I spend a great deal of time with them, getting to know their individual personalities. I also watch how they move and determine which have the best conformation. As they get older, they are exposed to many different sounds, textures, flooring and ground surfaces, environments, and people. During this socialization process, I learn which pups would be best suited to which types of homes, and I place them accordingly. Show, performance and working homes take priority, and homes who already have an Eta D'Oro dog generally also take priority. I get frequent inquiries regarding my pups, and I do save those questionnaires as they come in. However, I find most people are not willing to wait the several months, or longer, it may take before I actually have pups available to go to their homes. Accordingly, I do not have extensive contact with most potential buyers until I have pups that are several weeks old. I don't want to waste anyone's time until I know I have a puppy available. That being said, I like to get to know my puppy buyers as much as I can before they take their new puppy home. I often have folks come to visit the pups when they are old enough, and our initial phone conversation s often take a little time so you can learn about me and my dogs, and so I can learn as much as I can about the type of dog that fits into your family. A laid-back dog might be better suited to a less active family, and a higher energy dog would be better suited to an active family. Why health testing? All my dogs are health tested prior to breeding. Health testing means so much more than just a vet check. It's testing in specific areas by board certified veterinarians to ensure my breeding dogs meet the standards expected of breeders under the GRCA Code of Ethics, a standard designed to ensure the entire breed is as healthy as possible, and that buyers get the most healthy pups possible. By testing for things like eye, cardiac, and joint issues and by DNA testing for several common genetic conditions common to golden retrievers, I can ensure I am doing all I can to produce healthy puppies that grow into long-lived, healthy dogs. I test for all the things the GRCA wants its breeders to test for, and do additional testing, as well. For example, all my current breeding animals get heart clearances by echocardiogram, not only by auscultation. While there is no way to guarantee nothing bad will ever happen, I want to do everything I can to reduce or in some cases even eliminate the risk. How do you choose to do a particular breeding? My dogs are purposefully bred, versatile golden retrievers. I have kept or co-own at least one dog from almost every breeding I have done. One of my goals with all of my breedings is to produce pups I would want to keep for myself, and that I will be proud to have in the various competition venues representing my kennel. I also want them to be much loved companion golden retrievers. To meet those goals, I need to produce long-lived, healthy, correct, versatile dogs that can do all the things a golden is supposed to be able to do. I look for health and longevity when picking a sire, and I look for dogs that are physically correct meet the breed standard , have the correct golden disposition, and will be a good match for my girls. Many of the sires of my litters have produced well in the past, which is a good indicator of what they'll produce with my girls. For some breedings, I am looking for dogs with certain skills or capabilities prominent in the pedigrees. In others I am looking to improve upon what I have, to better some area I feel could be improved in my dogs on the whole. I am also careful not to lose the features I particularly like and that are correct in my dogs. I spend many, many hours reviewing pedigrees, observing dogs and talking to breeders and owners about their dogs, as well as others who may be familiar with their pedigrees from before I started watching those things. For the time being, you won't be able to meet both parents here at my home when you visit. My dogs are all related too closely to breed them to each other. In fact, I have done breedings with long deceased sires, choosing to use their frozen semen because they are very well known quantities; they have adult pups out there that help me evaluate what the sire will bring to a breeding, and I have life-long health and longevity information on both the sire and his other offspring. In other cases, I have had semen shipped from the far reaches of the country. This capability gives me the opportunity to expand the gene pool I use in my breedings, and I can search out the healthiest and best matches for my girls. I also have done local breedings by live cover, but it is a great benefit not to be limited by access to only local boys. What will our relationship be after one of your pups comes home with me? I usually set up closed Facebook groups for each litter so puppy buyers can stay in touch with each other, ask questions of me or each other, and so folks can share pictures, triumphs, and news. I have found it a great way to stay in touch, but not everyone is on Facebook, and those who are may not be frequent Facebook users. Be assured I am always accessible to answer your questions, and will always be happy to take your dog back and find him or her a great new home in the event you are no longer able to care for your pup due to health, personal, financial, or any other reasons. None of my dogs need ever become rescue dogs. I love these pups from a time before they are even born, and will always do what is best for them. I even have buyers that have put it in their wills that their dogs come back to me when the time comes, because they know I will put the dogs first. What are your requirements in terms of spay or neuter? For a good number of years, peer reviewed studies and vets and breeders whom I trust have agreed that early spay or neuter is very dangerous to the short- and long-term health of dogs. Everything from orthopedic issues, cancers, and fear of storms can be blamed in part on early spay and neuter. At the very least, I want my dogs to remain intact not spayed or neutered for long enough for the hormones to do their job getting the pups' bones and bodies to maturity. For girls, they should remain intact for at least two heat cycles, and for boys ideally until at least 2 years. I can tell you my boys do not reach full physical maturity until around three, so for their bones, joints, and skulls and other things less obvious to fully mature, I'd prefer they not be neutered ever, but at least not until they are three. Neutering a dog does not affect his instinct to mark. Training affects that. Neutering does not affect his instinct to mount other dogs as a dominance play. Training does. Neutering an aggressive dog does not alleviate his aggressiveness. Neutering a dog does greatly increase his risk of cancers common in goldens. You can often identify a dog spayed or neutered young by its disproportionately long, gangly legs. Those growth plates in the legs were still open when the hormones were removed from the dog, and growth no longer could continue in a balanced way. Buyers are often looking for good bone and big heads on their goldens, particularly the boys. Those things come with maturity while the hormones are intact. What is your guidance on vaccination? My general rule is to keep vaccinations to a minimum. I am not an antivaxer; vaccinations are vital to our dogs' health. For example, without vaccination, parvo kills puppies. I know breeders and dog owners who have lost puppies to parvo. These diseases we vaccinate against are serious. However, I believe in limiting vaccinations to the ones required, at the frequency required. My puppies will have their first round of puppy vaccinations before they go to their homes. After that, vaccinations need only be done if the dog needs additional protection. Titer testing will tell you if that is the case. My foundation bitch received puppy shots and then no further vaccinations other than periodic 3-year rabies as required by law where I live. At her senior physical at age 9, she was found by titer testing to still be fully protected against those things she was vaccinated against as a pup. Research what vaccinations are recommended where you live. Leptospirosis is common in some areas, very rare in others. The various dog influenza vaccines do not protect against all strains of flu, do not last long, and are not fully effective. Balancing the risk of infection essentially a contagious cough unless the infected dog has underlying conditions that make it hard to fight the infection against the effectiveness of the vaccine, consider if it is really worth putting those chemicals into your dog's body. Bordetella kennel cough vaccination is required by some boarding facilities, so you may feel forced to get that. However, it also does not protect against all strains, is not fully effective, and does not last long. I do not vaccinate for Bordetella. It is a cough that lasts several days, and can be treated if it is bacterial. In addition, I recommend vaccinating smartly - the fewer vaccinations given at a time, the less risk for complications. Vaccinating a dog weakened by some other condition or illness, for example an infection, can also lead to complications or reactions. Don't let a vet pressure you into doing anything unsafe for your dog. Your puppy can't advocate for him- or herself, and needs you to look out for him or her. I wanted to reach out and send some photos of Gus who is now a little over a year old. He has gotten into Dock Diving in the last few months and has earned his Dock Senior title. Thank you for a great dog! When I tell you that he did it with no effort, I'm not exaggerating. He did it all on his own! I think he would have passed the test when I received him in July. I think you and your staff should be very proud of the training you provide your puppies! Please thank everyone who worked with Dwayne. In two weeks, he will become a therapy dog with Easter Seals of Alabama. Jen was so helpful, knowledgeable, and professional throughout the whole adoption process. She communicated regularly with us, providing so many updates and videos along the way. We are so fortunate for her and her staff! Thank you Jen and Eagleridge Golden Retrievers!! Jen was always super responsive, knowledgeable and able to answer our many questions. We have had Kevin for about a month and a half now we got him in September and he is settling in perfectly. The training program was a great addition, he is able to follow commands and is very well tempered and so smart. From the adoption process to the training program, we would absolutely recommend this breeder to anyone looking for a great experience! This FL boy is definitely enjoying the Northeastern Autumn! Furthermore, being a client since , I could honestly compare the experience from four 4 years ago to this present time. It was as stress free working with Jen Francis as it could possibly be! Her knowledge about this variety of a K9 is remarkable. The quality health , temperament and of course breed beauty and more are on full display at EagleRidge!

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is an exciting time filled with joy, cuddles, and a few inevitable challenges. Table of Contents Easiest Dog to Take Care of: Top 10 Breeds for a Happy Home Do you ever dream about having a furry best friend who loves to play fetch, gives the warmest cuddles, and greets you with the happiest tail wags every time you come home? A friend who is not just any dog, but the easiest dog to take care of? We know, it sounds like a dream come true, right? But we also understand that bringing a new puppy home is a big step. It's like adding a new member to your family, a little brother or sister. All French Bulldog Insights French Bulldog Breed Info If you're seeking an adorable companion with a charmingly squashed face, an easygoing personality, and a distinct penchant for lounging on the couch, the French Bulldog could just be your perfect match. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. They have large, square heads, beautiful medium-sized eyes, and elongated, perky ears. They have strong, broad muzzles and black noses. Frenchies require minimal outdoor exercise and adapt well to all kinds of family settings --singles, couples, and families. This makes them very popular for city life or expansive farms! Their happiness and adaptability translates to life with other pets, too. However, caution should always be taken when introducing new furry families to one another. French bulldogs are alert and observant for families interested in watchdog qualities. They are just as happy in a lavish, pampered life, too! Some of our Merle French Bulldog puppies have Blue eyes. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. How to Discipline a Pug Overview It would be nice if our Pug puppies and dogs would automatically listen well at all times, however this certainly is not usually the case. While there are some things that a dog can instinctively know, many things do need to be taught. And part of teaching a puppy or older dog is the chosen method that is used for discipline. Whether your Pug is biting, nipping, destructively chewing, barking, excessively licking you or having bathroom accidents… the way that you correct your Pug will play a huge role in how well you can teach him right from wrong. In this section we are going to cover: Commonly used methods of disciplining a dog and exactly why these techniques do not work The 3 things that a Pug needs to truly learn something The most effective way to discipline your Pug for fast success Discipline Methods that do NOT Work and Why There are many ways to discipline a dog; however the problem is that many of the commonly used methods rarely work. If you use any of these techniques, things can backfire. In addition, new issues can arise. Timothy Photo courtesy of Diane Darch Never do physical intervention, slapping the Pug's bum or tapping the nose- Some owners will slap a puppy's rear end or thump a dog's nose as a way to 'spank' a dog and let them know that they did something wrong. Whether you use your hand, a newspaper or another item that you deem 'safe' this is a form of physical abuse since there is no clear line of what hurts and what does not. Having the intention of hurting a dog is a cruelty to animals. And if your intention is to simply startle the dog into listening, this will not solve that the original issue that you are trying to correct. In addition, dogs that are hit in any fashion may have eventually have increased aggression. Never yell - When things seem out of control, it's easy to lose your cool. Yelling at a Pug will often scare him and this may appear to work at first. After all, a dog that is screamed at will stop what he is doing…however he will have no idea why you are yelling or what you are saying. Being shouted at will increase his anxiety and stress level, which decreases his ability to focus and learn. Never give timeouts in severe isolation - There are two types of isolation discipline methods: physical and social. Physical isolation involves placing the Pug into a small area such as a crate that is away from other family members both human and animals. This does not work, because when a dog is punished in this way, he will often become scared and anxious. He will have no clue as to why he has been 'locked away'. A Pug will be under duress during this time and will only be focused on getting free, not on learning what was expected of him. Social isolation is a different type of discipline and we will go into that ahead. Never take away a toy - Dogs have very few possessions in comparison to us humans. They have their beds, their food and water bowls and their toys. Beds are for comfort, food and water of course is for survival and toys are a dog's most prized possessions as they can become very attached to them. Can you make a Pug listen by taking away a favorite toy? This does not work because one of two things will happen: 1 If the Pug cares about what just happened, it moves the dog into a mindset of wanting to have his toy back, when this time could be better spent actually teaching the Pug what he did wrong and what he should be doing instead or 2 Some Pugs will take this in stride because there are other toys to play with and if you take away all of his toys, he may very well think you are just playing some sort of odd game. Again, there are better ways to discipline your Pug that actually work well. Never rub a Pug's nose in his feces or urine - Far too many people think that this works when a dog has a bathroom accident and this may be due to copying what they saw their parents or grandparents doing in the past. Before the wonderful invention of computers and the transition of having them everywhere yeah, there was a time like that! Sure, some dog owners would purchase training books, however the majority of them just did what they saw others do due to a lack of knowledge regarding proper training methods. This is an old-fashioned punishment that can scare the heck out of a dog or confused him and it does not work. While it may make perfect sense to you that your Pug should only pee or poo in a designated outdoor area, your puppy or dog will not know the difference between that spot of grass and the carpeting in your living room unless he is clearly taught. And while it may seem logical to you that your Pug should not chew on the leg of the kitchen table, he has no idea why that is wrong, but chewing on a toy is okay, unless it is clearly taught to him. The reason why all of the above listed punishments do not work, is because while they may startle a dog, or scare him or even make him know that he misbehaved, they do not show him what he should do instead. Bubloo, 9 months old Photo courtesy of The Krish's Family In addition, for a Pug to be well-behaved, he needs to respect his leader, which will cause him to want to listen. If a dog is punished in a way that causes fear, he will be afraid of his leader which is not the same as respecting him. If a Pug has full run of a house and access to everything in it, he will have so many choices that he's bound to do things wrong. With 4, 5 or 6 rooms to possibly pee or poo in, if he has to go, surely he will not automatically wait until he is taken out or go right over to pee pads. If he has access to laundry piles thrown on the floor, how will he know that those are not 'toys' left out for him? This should be placed in well-lit room that is commonly used by the family such as the kitchen or living room. In cases of a Pug moving the pad onto his bed some do this as if it is a blanket or chewing it up, it can help to 1 duct tape the pad securely in place works with hardwood or linoleum floors or 2 forgo the pad and simply place the gates in the kitchen where the floor is easy to clean or on top of an appropriately sized cut-out piece of linoleum this can be purchased at a home supply store. Keep in mind that housebreaking is a temporary phase and by the age of 9 months or so, a puppy can hold his needs for 8 hours or so while you are at work. If not, how else is he to learn right from wrong? However, this should be done with the owner as his guide and along with discipline methods as shown ahead. An email from an owner comes to mind that let us know that his young Pug puppy that was in his teething phase, kept chewing his shoes. He had a collection of running shoes that he liked to place in a row near the front door for easy access when he'd leave the house. Any time that he turned his back on his Pug, the puppy would scamper over to the shoes and start chewing on them. The question was: how to discipline the puppy to stop doing that. While he could have put a lot of effort into teaching the lesson between those shoes and toys and it would have eventually worked… it was a lot easier to simply move the shoes to a shelf or onto a stand-up shoe rack where they were no longer accessible. The lesson here is to choose your battles wisely, especially with a teething puppy. Not only should the house be puppy-proofed, all objects that can be tucked away, should be. Leaving a Pug with tons of chewing options aside from toys is the canine equivalent of letting a child loose in a candy store. Non-movable objects such as furniture legs, that dogs for some reason love chewing on, can be sprayed with a safe deterrent spray; apple bitter works well for this. Velvet, 10 months old Photo courtesy of Abby 2 Stop. You do want a method to stop your Pug from doing an action that is wrong. There are 2 ways to do this. In some cases, an effective discipline method is to clap loudly. This works well for house training and chewing issues. Clapping is usually enough to startle a Pug momentarily, which is all that you need as long as you are ready for the next discipline step. You can add a firm 'No! For nipping and other such behavior , if a clap does not work, simply standing up from a sitting position may be enough to stop a Pug, since you are limiting his ability to reach you. If the puppy is really out of control, this would be the time to instill the social isolation discipline that we touched on above. This involves placing him in his playpen for a short while. In either case of standing or putting him in his pen, part of this will involve ignoring him. You may wonder how in the world ignoring a dog will teach him anything. To a dog, his humans and any other animals in the house are his 'pack' and being part of the pack is everything… It is his safety, his security and his family. When a dog is ignored, he will start to worry that he is being banned from his pack and this will cause him to rethink his behavior. You do not need to do this for very long… some Pugs notice right away and others take much longer to figure out that they are not being spoken to, etc…. A dog will never learn what he is supposed to do, unless it is shown to him. While words such as 'No' can cause a Pug to pause, the most important part of discipline is to clearly show your Pug what you expect. Just as important, a dog needs to understand why he should do it. Give a Pug motivation and a reason to follow the rules, and you'll find success every time. It's really that easy: Show what to do and why to do it. Once he has noticed that he is being 'temporarily banned from the pack' as described earlier, and you let 5 minutes go by, allow him access to you again. If he nips again right away, he is ignored again and this time for the maximum of 10 minutes. If he behaves well, after just one minute of good behavior reward him with praise and a small treat if he needs extra motivation. Say a word that he can learn to associate the action with such as "Bathroom"… and as he is peeing, give praise that includes the affirmation of what he is doing by saying "Good, bathroom. Good boy, you're going to the bathroom! Immediately offer him a tempting chew toy. As soon as he mouths it, praise him in a happy voice as if he is doing the most wonderful thing in the world. While it may seem a bit silly to act so happy that a dog is playing with a toy, when you are teaching right from wrong, Pugs learn best if an appropriate action is met with tons of enthusiasm and delight. Once the dog has had a few weeks to learn what is expected, you can tone things down and give 'normal' positive reinforcement with a simple 'Good boy' or 'Good girl'. Do make a note to apply apple bitter spray or other safe deterrent on any non-movable item that seems to be too tempting to your Pug for him to leave alone. We'll dive into more details on each of these: 1 Illness or injury. As with any sort of strange behavior, health issues are always a top concern. Not feeling well almost always manifests as changes in mood. Any physical issues such as limping, favoring a certain part of the body, or inability to walk or run as usual point to some sort of injury or condition. What to do: When in doubt about any possible health issue, contact the vet. Eating changes or gastrointestinal issues are just a few reasons to contact the veterinarian and schedule a checkup. If you have a female Pug that has not been spayed and is therefore entering in and out of heat cycles , this can cause her to feel moody. Heat typically occurs twice per year. It can last 2 to 3 weeks. In addition, it is believed that some dogs feel abdominal cramping, which can lend to the bad mood. What to do: You can help by allowing your Pug to retreat if she wishes, being sure that she has a great bed to rest on, and if she appears to be in discomfort placing a warm heating pad next to her abdomen can help be sure that this is set on warm, not hot, and that your Pug cannot chew on any cords. Ky Ky, at 2 years old, photo courtesy of The Van Allen Family 3 Loss of a companion If a Pug no longer sees a friend animal or human , this can have a huge impact on him. This is generally most severe if a person, dog, or other is no longer part of the household. But, a Pug can also feel quite down even if he does not see a regular visitor. If your Pug is feeling sad or down for this reason, it will be important to allow him to grieve the loss. If it was a household member that is gone, it will be normal for a Pug to roam the house looking for him, or to gaze out of a window waiting for that person to arrive. What to do: It can be hard to watch a Pug feel unhappy like this. While you will want to give him time to accept the loss, there are some things that you can do. It can help to engage your Pug in an activity that is new to him. This can be a walk in a new neighborhood, or a visit to a new place. Any sort of safe location in which he can see new things, hear new sounds, and smell new scents can help to perk him up. This can be a lake shore, hiking trail, pet store… any place that is novel. When you find a spot that your Pug seems to enjoy and that has let him shake off his bad mood for a while, try to make that a new ritual for both of you. Take him there as often as possible, but at least once a week at minimum. And of course, this is applicable to a negative change. Some examples include: Spending less time with his human A new household member human or pet A move to a new house Changes in the household vibe such as more noise, more visitors, etc. What to do: How you help your Pug come out of a funk will depend on what type of change triggered him to start to feel depressed. But, if the situation is already occurring, you can: Be sure to keep both pets separate in regard to where they eat, rest, and sleep. Even if you envisioned your Pug having a new best friend, that sort of bond cannot be forced. Until the two are ready, they should feel as if they have their own areas for food, and to rest both during the day and at night to sleep. If this is a matter of having two Pugs or two dogs, you may need to help them decide who the leader is. Hopefully, your Pug already sees you as the alpha. But with more than one pet, there is also an alpha dog, the leader of the animal pack. Normally it is the older dog; but, it is not always so and can also depend on gender. If the dogs are unclear about where they stand, you can help them by doing things for the alpha first. This applies to the order in which the food bowls are placed down, leashes are attached, dogs are let out, etc. Bowls in a certain corner of the kitchen, toys to the side of the sofa, etc. Dogs can feel wary until they understand that they are occupants and not just visitors, so it can take some time. Each day, walk your Pug from room to room. And when you take him outside, walk him around the perimeter of the yard. He may seem irritated or withdrawn. Any sort of commotions should be kept to a minimum. And if some of these sorts of things cannot be avoided, set up an area for your Pug to retreat to if he has the urge to get away from things. Now, this kind of odd behavior is just fine! Lilly 2 years old and Ky Ky 2 years old , photo courtesy of The Van Allen Family 5 Boredom While a Pug may be perfectly happy to sit by you while you watch TV, and may seem just fine laying down while you do some household chores, ongoing monotony can really start to wear on a Pug. Some windows of down time are just fine. Days, weeks, or months on end can end up making a Pug rather depressed. Also, as a Pug matures, issues with boredom can increase. This is because as he ages, his comprehension of the world strengthens. What used to satisfy a puppy may not be enough for an adult Pug. He should have at least 2 walks per day, a session of some type of learning commands, a trick, heeling, etc. Pugs should have toys that encourage independent play. Some great ones to get are those that speak or make silly noises. The Animal Sounds Babble Ball is great too; this lets out 20 funny animals sounds, including frogs, goats, horses, and more. That is just one, the Multipet line of toys has a bunch of different animals, each is a good sized stuffed animal, sturdy, and lets us fun sounds. Are there any errands that you run without your Pug that you actually could take him with you for? Are you sure? As long as you have a safe car seat for your Pug , and keep him on leash and harness, let him to be your companion for shopping and running errands as much as possible. When a Pug Acts Restless The Pug breed can get a bad rep sometimes, being thought of as a touch lazy and inactive. But, Pug owners know that this breed actually has a pretty good energy level. With Pugs, there is usually a good balance of activity and rest. Mood changes that include agitation, restlessness, or irritation definitely point to some sort of problem. Reasons for acting restless include: Pent-up energy most common reason Health issue or injury possible We'll dive into each of these: 1 Pent-up energy The Pug is often underrated in this regard. But, Pugs can get very disturbed if they are not allowed to release their natural energy. This is very common in the winter , when weather keeps both owners and dogs inside more often, but can also happen just from not getting outside enough for his daily walks. Frank, photo courtesy of Nina Coley What to do: 1- If you do not take your Pug for two walks per day, now is the time to start. If cold weather is getting in your way, place a lined vest on your Pug like the Kuoser Waterproof Windproof British Style Plaid Dog Vest , be sure that his paws are protected from the cold and he has traction via a good paw wax, and dress warmly yourself. Of course, a concern with this breed is overheating; however, as long as your Pug appears to have the energy, you take a break every 15 minutes, and bring along water to for him to re-hydrate, you can often extend walks. Playing fetch or teaching commands are always good choices. If your Pug knows all of the basic commands, take it up a notch by teaching him some tricks. Any of these sorts of odd behaviors may be red flags of a hip, bone, back, or other physical issue. However, if a Pug suddenly acts afraid for no apparent reason, this can be worrying. Whining and cowering down Reasons for acting afraid include: Actually being startled or scared Feeling uncomfortable, mostly due to temperature We'll dive into each of these: 1 The most common cause is the one you assumed; the Pug is afraid of something. The tricky part is trying to figure out what it is, if the reason is not clear. In some cases, this can be related to the incredible sense of hearing that canines possess. A puppy or dog may have heard an alarming noise that his human simply did not pick up on. This may be other dogs barking, police sirens, or other such noises. If so, the episode should be over quickly. In other instances, the cause can be a mystery. It can be random things… a dog may see his reflection in a mirror and get spooked studies show that canines cannot identify their own reflection , or even a former tumble down steps that now make a dog wary when he goes near them. What to do: How you act will have a big impact on how your Pug interprets things. Since you are his leader, he will look to you for cues on whether or not his behavior is valid. If you coddle him, swoop him up, and offer soothing words of concern, that will just be giving affirmation that he should be scared. It is best to acknowledge that he has sensed something. And then, show him that all is well and re-direct his attention. Be sure that your body language conveys what you are saying. If you coddle him, swooping him up and offer soothing words of concern, that will just be giving affirmation that he should be scared. Sometimes shivering, cuddling up close, and other such behaviors can be misinterpreted as a Pug being scared, when he is actually trembling and seeking warmth due to feeling chilled. Though this breed has a thick coat, this does not make him invincible to the cold. And being a small dog, cold intolerance is not uncommon. What to do: Check your house for drafts and air currents. In the winter, some spots that you do not normally access, but your Pug does, like the floor can have drafts. You may wish to place clothing on your Pug like a soft shirt or vest. Once he has another layer on his core body, he should feel more comfortable. Or use his eyes to follow unseen things across the wall? If so, you are not alone. Lots of dogs react to things that their humans cannot see or hear. The reason for this is due to incredible canine hearing. Dogs hear things that we cannot hear without special instruments. We only hear things in the frequency range of , Hz. But, your Pug hears things in the much larger range of , Hz. And, your Pug can hear noises from 4 times the distance that you can. So, if your puppy or dog is reacting to something that you can neither see or hear, changes are that he is behaving that way for good reason. What to do: Do the exact same thing as stated above in cases of a Pug acting afraid with no reason. Acknowledge that he is noticing something, and then re-direct his attention. This is a pretty even-keeled breed, so any sort of strange, weird, or odd behavior usually has a root cause that should be assessed. Pug biting Stubborn Temperament The great thing is that not every Pug owner is going to struggle with these issues. From my personal experience of owning one, Mindy had a great personality. Yes, she had some issues, but not a ton of issues that made me regret the decision of getting a Pug. Pugs are sociable dogs that love human companionship. Mindy was overly dependent and wherever I was, she was right there at my feet. There were a couple of times when I almost tripped over her because she was right under my feet. Whenever they whine, ignore their behavior and turn your back. You can also give them a treat when they stop whining and praise them. Eventually, they will realize that they get rewarded when they are not whining. The lack of a regular routine can lead to separation anxiety issues. This will help calm them down so they know what to expect. It takes time to get your dog to calm down, but with patience and love, you can eventually get your dog to calm down and understand your daily routines. Uncontrollable Barking Barking is a form of communication and also a way to alert you of danger. The great thing is that you can teach your dog to stop barking so much or not bark at all. After doing this several times, she stopped barking and developed a little dove cry when she wanted something. It was cute and it was nice to know that you could actually teach Pugs not to bark. Just remember, it takes patience and a lot of practice to get them to stop that excessive barking. Jumping on People Pugs love attention, at least ours did. When she was about 4 years old, she had a bad habit of jumping on people because she wanted them to pet her. Whenever someone came over, she would jump on them. We hated this behavior problem because we realized that not everyone likes dogs. We realized that dogs usually jump when they are excited or have too much energy. So, we started taking Mindy for long walks and made sure that she got plenty of exercise. This helped us get her to stop that unwanted behavior. Growling Issues A Pug is a has a docile temperament, but there are times when they may growl at you such as when they are eating or playing with their favorite toy. You may not think anything about it, but growling is a form of aggression, that needs to be dealt with. According to experts, growling is usually a form of communication. At times you may experience the growling issues if they are experiencing some type of pain. Unfortunately, Pugs have quite a bit of health issues and as they get older, they may experience aches and pains that can cause them to growl. Pug Dominance Issues Pugs are stubborn dogs and if you let them, they will try to become an alpha dog. You have to let them know that you are in control and they have to listen to what you want them to do. One thing we noticed about Mindy was she loved chewing the strings of our rugs and our hair when we laid down with her. A puppy chews to help them relieve the pain from incoming adult teeth. The best thing you can do is buy them chew toys that they can chew on to help them relieve the pain. Check out some of the best chew toys for Pugs that will help stop this destructive behavior. Older pets will chew if they are bored or dealing with separation anxiety issues. One of the best ways to get them to stop is to give them their favorite toy. If they are bored and have too much energy, put a harness on them and take them for a long walk. Pug Biting According to Canine Journal , over 4. They also have a tendency to bite if they are scared, feeling protective of if they are not feeling well. This is important to know if you have children and they are playing with the family pet. The dog can become excited and accidentally nip them while playing. If this happens, make sure that your dog understands this behavior is not acceptable. They are extremely adorable with those wrinkles. All puppies love to bite and let me tell you, it hurts! We also had to deal with issues of stubbornness with Mindy. This can make training them challenging. However, every pet owner needs to learn how to discipline their pet. No parent would let their kids run their household, you set rules that need to be followed. The same goes with your furbaby, you need to set the rules you want them to follow. Frequently Asked Questions Are Pugs territorial? However, every dog has its own unique personality. Some people have had to deal with aggressive territorial issues when they added a second Pug to their household or a dog that is the same sex. Dogs are fairly easy to train if you can stay persistent and train them properly. The most important thing is to make sure that you start training them and correct bad behavior as soon as you see it. Seasoned pug owners can all come to agree that their dogs can be pretty active and curious most of the day, and that can raise questions for new and confused pug owners. Why Are Pugs So Hyper? Hyperactivity affects all puppies, regardless of breed. Excessive hyperactivity in pugs is usually a result of extreme excitement or reaction to someone or something else being hyper as well. Pugs are companion dogs, therefore they are more susceptible to separation anxiety , which may lead to excessive hyperactivity. It is most detectable in puppies, but it can also affect adult pugs too. Pugs with high energy can be very active and even aggressive, but this is completely normal. It just means that it will happen less often, as older dogs will just want to cuddle next to their owner. The zoomies are considered to be normal behavior for breeds like pugs. With that being said, there is no need to be too concerned about it, especially since it only lasts for a few minutes at a time. There is still a need to be a bit cautious though, as too much activity can get out of hand fast. What Triggers Frenetic Random Activity Periods in Pugs As mentioned above, pugs can get pretty excited from the sight of someone or something else getting excited. If people are being playful and fun with one another, the pug will want to join in and get in on the action as well. It is just a natural part of their DNA. Pugs can also become really excited and hyper when certain things in the atmosphere make noise or commotion. This includes things like doorbells, people, kids, and more. Most pugs will react by squealing or running around the area. Another thing that can easily trigger the zoomies in most pugs is bath time. Many Pug owners will tell you that your pooch can become overly animated after bath time. This hyper behavior is an expression of happiness that the bath is over. That is usually because dog bathing requires the owner to restrain the dog for a while and use water that may be uncomfortable for them. This can easily make any dog pretty stressed out and fearful. When the bath is over, they are relieved. Mindy my Pug would get the zoomies whenever we would try to dry her off with a towel after her bath. An episode of hyperactivity will involve a short burst of energy when your pooch runs around in a wild run. Here are some of the signs to watch for your Pug has a case of the zoomies. They suddenly break into a gallop from standing still. Excited eyes A squatted run like they are going to attack something. They will run in tight turns and spins to change direction quickly. Watch this video to see what the zoomies look like. Are Zoomies Dangerous? However, if you live in a small space, your dog can knock over things and make a mess in their frenzy. They may slip on a rug or your hardwood floors and bump into your coffee table, or other furniture and hurt themselves. As a Pug parent, there are some things you can do to help control this type of behavior to keep them safe. Some pet owners will notice their Pugs become more hyper at night or in the early morning hours. A hyperactive Pug can be hard to calm down, but it is possible to settle your dog down. A long day of playing and exercise will make the dog tired at the end of the day. In that case, it is best to try to set up some sort of playtime area or routine that the pug can do to keep itself entertained for a certain amount of time during the day. If you have a fenced-in backyard, you can install a pet door and allow Fido to play outside, just make sure there are no dangers in your backyard. That gives the owner a break and the pug the ability to exercise and wear itself out. Another good idea would be to take it to a dog park for a day of fun and exercise. It is best to try to reach for 30 minutes of daily exercise. This can be easily achieved with two 15 minute walks or two 15 minutes games of fetch. Create a Daily Routine If a pug is working on a daily routine with the owner, this may help lower stress and anxiety. It is best to try to stick to a consistent and easy schedule from morning to night. Include everything from waking up and eating breakfast to settling down and eating dinner. Routines usually help dogs get a sense of belonging and comfort since they know what to expect of the day. Some pug owners can tell what time of day the zoomies usually happen. Some pugs get it in the morning while others get it at night. If that can be identified, give the pug a distraction at that time to settle down. Separation Anxiety You can usually find various techniques and tips online to help lessen separation anxiety with pugs. Smart toys and interactive toys may be perfect for this type of dilemma. Enjoy it while it lasts, because it will subside as they become older. References And Further Reading. Last Words Are Pugs Hyper? Yes, they can be. Why Are Pugs Hyper? Pablo the Pug has the zoomies! When people get a Pug puppy for the first time, they often ask me: will my Pug ever calm down? And the answer is yes. Although it can carry on into adulthood, canine hyperactivity is most prevalent in puppies. This is a natural and important part of puppyhood. Most Pug puppies will start to calm down as they mature. They will still get the zoomies from time to time, but the days of their puppyish antics should diminish considerably. In most cases, the zoomies are nothing to worry about. Random bouts of hyperactivity are part and parcel of being a dog. The zoomies are usually over in a few minutes, and your Pug should remain relatively calm for the rest of the day. However, there are some practical considerations to take note of. Many Pug owners find that they can predict when their pup is going to get a bout of the zoomies, giving them a window to remove any hazards ahead of time. How To Keep Pug Hyperactivity At Bay Even though periods of hyperactivity are completely normal, there are some things we can do to keep our Pugs as calm as possible and moderate that frenetic behavior. Regular exercise Daily exercise and playtime will use up your Pugs excess energy and reduce the chance of a hyperactive episode. Aim for between 20 and 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Aim to split this into two e. Once they are all tuckered out, your Pug will just want to snuggle on the sofa with mum or dad. If you spend a significant amount of the day away at work then try to ensure that your Pug has plenty of opportunities to engage in independent play. You might wish to create a designated play area or provide some treat-dispensing toys. Daily routines Keeping to a solid routine is really beneficial for Pug behavior. Routines alleviate stress and anxiety and promote consistent behaviors. By reducing stressors, your Pug is less likely to indulge in anxiety-driven hyperactivity. Additionally, if you know when your Pug is likely to act out, you can provide a fun distraction to divert their attention. Socialization Socialization with people and other dogs is essential for healthy canine development. Socializing provides mental and physical stimulation and makes use of all that excess energy. If not, why not buddy up with a dog-owner friend or visit a dog park a few times each week. Reduce anxiety For some Pugs, the key to reducing hyperactivity is treating the root of the problem — anxiety. As social animals, Pugs are particularly prone to separation anxiety. Finding ways to minimize the distress your pet feels will help them to calm down. Distractions are great that could be a fun toy or puzzle. Some Pug owners have even tried canine aromatherapy. Last Words Are Pugs hyper? Yes, they certainly can be. But a moderate amount of hyperactivity is nothing to worry about. Most of the time the zoomies die down after puppyhood. However, there are ways to keep hyperactive behaviors at bay. Exercise, moderating anxiety, adequate socialization, and consistent daily routines can make the world of difference. What Do I Do? Oct 13, Jun 22, This post may contain affiliate links. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. What do I do? One reader says: We have a 7 month old Bichon Maltese mix puppy…potty training is going very badly. We do everything that is recommended. We use a crate. We reward her after she does her business outside. We have her on a regular feeding schedule. She still routinely pees and poops inside including in her crate. She is showing no improvement. We have had many dogs and trained lots of puppies in the past. Out of control? Lack of exercise — Raven has gotten less exercise recently. Are you exercising your dog regularly? Are you working on new things with your dog daily? Did something change in your life? Dog Breed — Raven is a Golden Retriever, an energetic sporting breed. Understanding your breed may help you put together a better training plan for your uncontrollable dog. Health — Raven is in great health — there could be some underlying health issues. Recently my wife and I took a vacation and left Stetson and Raven with my parents. When we returned home we were told that Stetson was a good boy, but Raven was out of control. She definitely still has some puppy in her. Raven is not untrainable, but she can be out of control. So how can I get my dog to calm down? I decided to focus on how to keep Raven under control when new visitors come to the house. Sit-Stay before eating her meals. Lay down nicely while we have meals. Focus on one behavior at a time — We want to focus specifically on keeping Raven calm when guests come over to the house. We have 2-month-old twins and we have visitors all the time. Our plan is to have her go to her mat or bed, use a tie-down, and give her a puzzle toy or bully stick for the first 10 minutes when people come over. This will give her a chance to have a calm energy when greeting new guests. Time to get back into a daily exercise routine to get some of that pent-up energy out. Make sure everyone in the house is on the same page — Training was easier when it was just me. Now we have my wife, the in-laws, and my parents over regularly. Six steps! Are Some Dogs Really Untrainable? Hmmm…well, I never want to say never, but we have never oops! Some dogs are definitely more difficult than others. Some dog breeds are known to be more difficult to train. An interesting read, Coren includes a list of top dog breeds ranking in obedience and working intelligence. Hint: the breeds we most commonly train as Service Dogs: German Shepherds 3 , Golden Retrievers 4 , and Labrador Retrievers 7 are all considered highly intelligent. Our reader should take a step back and start from the beginning with crate and potty training. My recommendation would be to review these articles.

Life Span Did You Know? While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. heeler poodle puppies - You can expect openness to new people like no other from them, and they will play with just about anyone. Luckily, they are also quite eager to please their owners and will have a lot of fun learning to follow commands. This also opens up a new bond between you and your doggo. And this kind of relationship will grow and adapt when you include many games and mentally stimulating toys as well. Since this is a herding breed, they enjoy finding a purpose in the things they do. So, try to get them bones with something delicious inside instead of just giving them plain treats. Pembroke Welsh Corgi While they are a whole bundle of fun, they are also quite protective. You will have to work toward introducing new people to them in a way that puts them at ease and calms them down. They are best known for their easy-to-train nature and protective instincts. A typical German Shepherd has a thick, short coat that keeps them snug during colder seasons. The temperament of a German Shepherd is a mixed bundle of, well, everything. They will be cruel to those who harm you and kind to those they love. They are pretty kind to those they trust, and bonding is essential to them. This playful breed is intelligent, too, so they will need lots of mental stimulation. They are quick on the mark and will need extra help to enhance their problem-solving capabilities. Many facets of their appearance and personality are copied and pasted from the parent breeds. This breed is specifically great for experienced owners, as first-timers may find them to be a bit harder to care for. This is because they require so much attention, thanks to their playful nature and stubborn streak. If you are an inexperienced owner, you might need help to train these dogs appropriately. However, we can assume that the Cormon Shepherd was most likely bred out of curiosity. And now, we know. As with most crossbreeds, there is no particular conclusion as to how your Corgi and German Shepherd mix pup will develop. Your pet will become more of the traits that you feed. You want to encourage movement and lots of fun exercises to keep them from becoming too chubby. This will also help them relieve any excess energy they may have. Beware because this breed can develop a mean streak — whether this is nature vs. So, be sure to remain consistent with your pup and offer them everything they may need to become the best version of their adorable little selves. Socialization Socialization is quite an essential aspect of any dog breed. Introducing them into your home, family, or new pets is one of the first things to tick off your socialization checklist. This is where the fun commands like catch, rollover, and play dead come into play. Be sure to couple all of this with positive rewards like yummy treats. Yes, these affectionate furry love balls make for a wonderful addition to any family. Since the German Shepherd Corgi Mix is so playful, they will do well as a companion to your younger kids. However, they do need to be trained and introduced to babies and toddlers in a controlled environment beforehand. The same goes for meeting other animals as well. Your Corgi German Shepherd Mix will want to smell just about everything and everywhere before nudging their new acquaintance to play with them. You can expect a pupper with short limbs, a stocky build, and an absolutely adorable butt. Their tail is usually that of a Corgi and will stand upright most times, unlike a German Shepherd. Their faces are flat, and their ears are pointy. While most of the face is built like a German Shepherd, they do not have the muzzle of one. Instead, they have a shorter snout like a Corgi has. This is because their short hairs need to keep all their warmth while shedding it off for the summertime. So, you will also want to wash them as often as possible — at least once a week or twice a month. The complicated seasons are usually during the shoulder seasons when the weather changes. Around that time, your pup will shed off any old layers to insulate for the winter or summertime. The Cormon Shepherd is relatively chilled compared to a German Shepherd that needs tons of space to run around. They will need to be in an area where they can do their business at will without interfering with the act of living. Being alone in a confined space for too long can cause your German Shepherd Corgi to act out destructively. They will need some kind of treat or toy to keep them busy during the day. Knowledge, in this case, allows you to care for your dog and adequately prevent any severe conditions. While each breed is fully equipped with its bag of worms, often with mixed breeds, there is no way of knowing what your dog will have to succumb to. Corgi Health Issues This small breed tends to live for around 12 to 13 years. Their stocky figures can hold around 30 pounds, making them exceptionally adorable, especially with their short legs. Unfortunately, they are also prone to some health issues. You can expect Von Willebrand diseases , degenerative myelopathy, and other problems like eye disorders, cardiac issues, and hip or elbow dysplasia. Pembroke Welsh Corgi Ideally, your breeder will have already screened the puppy before selling them to you. So, you should know beforehand how it will play out. The best thing to do with these disorders is to watch out for signs and symptoms. You can expect a good doggo to follow you around for around seven to ten years. You can also prepare for ailments like bloating , cataracts, and even cancer. Luckily with a healthy diet and proper care, these can be avoided, and other conditions can be treated. Luckily, with supplements like fish oils for dogs and a balanced, specified diet, you can manage some of the symptoms your dog may experience. Your corgi is prone to diseases like Obesity. Her coat may be short, but she sheds a fair amount, a trait inherited from both parents. Bathing can also help with excessive shedding. She may have little legs, but she sure knows how to use them! To keep her happy you should also plan activities that stimulate her agile brain while helping her to get lots of exercises; think outdoor ball games and squeaky toys are thrown around the living room. As already mentioned, she has two smart and quick-to-learn parents. Her natural herding nature means she will want to be the boss, though. You will need to be firm and fair, establishing yourself as the pack leader and Alpha from the start. She can be a great guard dog to watch over your home Her strong character and fearless streak are huge assets if you want your pet to also keep your home safe and sound. She can assess situations quickly and react appropriately. You will never have to question her loyalty. Her deep, gruff bark is another plus point when it comes to alerting you to danger and scaring off intruders. Introduce Corgi Shepherd puppies to children and they will grow up well socialized and happy to have little people to play with. You need to be careful with her portion control and feed her good quality food at set times throughout the day. Having a feeding schedule helps to manage her hunger and expectations. Your Shepherd Corgi cross puppy needs around one and a half cups of dry dog food each day. A fully-grown Corman Shepherd needs between two and three cups of dry food each day split between two servings. Limit the number of treats you feed your dog and choose healthy snacks and tidbits for those times when you really want to reward your doggie friend. She will definitely let you know when she wants anything, treats and food included! Joint dysplasia Joint dysplasia is painful, and it makes walking difficult. Such back problems are painful and usually significantly affect mobility. If left untreated, the condition will worsen. Cataracts and other eye problems If your dog starts bumping into things regularly or showing other signs of vision problems, take her to the vet. While there are some sight problems that will sadly stay with your dog, it is possible to correct others if caught early. Make sure you buy your puppy from a reputable breeder. Alternatively, look at local dog shelters and give a home to a dog in need. You should plan to spend around 1, USD on your dog each year. She has many doggie cousins, big and small Both the Corgi and the German Shepherd are popular dogs to crossbreed with other dog types. The Corman Shepherd has many relatives of all sizes, most of which look and act nothing like her. I would strongly recommend doing your homework before buying any dog and comparing the different breeds and crossbreeds to make sure that you fit the perfect dog for you. For example, the German Shepherd Pomeranian Mix is much fluffier and rarer than the Corman Shepherd and the also rare German Shepherd Dachshund Mix has a similar stubborn character but can be much more into hunting than herding. Intelligent, curious, and friendly, the Australian Shepherd Corgi Mix sometimes incorrectly spelled as a Shephard Mix is a bit better if you have other animals in the house. With brains as well as energy, you need the time to exercise and play, as well as the time to groom her and vacuum. About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. Video: German Shepherd Corgi Mix in Playing Mood Temperament and Personality These dogs are way too smart and intelligent and would go to any extent to please their owners. In fact, very much like their German shepherd parents, they are loyal, dedicated and protective of their family members. This trait, of course, makes them a commendable watch and guard dog as well. Corman Shepherds are active and energetic with an overall sweet temperament, which also makes them good with kids, other pets, and humans. They are obedient, though but need your care and attention. If you leave it alone regularly for extended periods of time, the result might not be too satisfying, as the dog grows up. Less care might make the dog aggressive. Care Exercise As an active breed, they need regular exercise schedules. Take it out at least once a day for a half-an-hour walk or a jog. It is fond of you. So your active participation with it in an evening game will also keep it satisfied and prevent any psychological issues in future. Grooming The Corman Shepherds have a dense coat, and they shed. So, a regular brushing, at least five days a week, is required to discard dead hair, as well as for keeping the coat in good shape and maintaining its majestic look. Bathe them if needed. They also grow nails quite quickly and develop pain while walking when they grow long. Make sure you clip them whenever necessary. Health Problems These are normally healthy, robust animals, carrying no breed specific concerns. But remember, their parents do suffer from certain issues like obesity, bloating, back and joint pains, eye problems, allergies, and even cancer. So, to ward off possibilities of genetically transmitted diseases, you might want to make an appointment with a good vet at least once a year. Teach your dog to stay alone from time to time. Begin with 10 minutes. Leave your house to go to the nearest shop to buy something. Increase the time gradually to 20 and then 40 and then an hour. To prevent your dog from becoming too possessive about you, give it treats and attention when a new person or a fellow pet, or even your child is around. Give it a treat or two or ask the person for the same , give it a couple of pats, or let it sit close to you. Such actions would help your dog associate the presence of another individual with pleasant things. Kindergarten puppy classes might also help. Never compromise with the food quality. What do you call a German Shepherd Corgi mix? A German Shepherd Corgi Mix can be called a variety of different names. This cross breed is commonly called a Corman Shepherd. They were established by a former German captain called Max von Stephanitz in the s. Thanks to his careful selection and breeding, the German Shepherd has become renowned as a working dog. Von Stephanitz designed the German Shepherd to be an athletic and powerful dog with a noble and loyal character. German Shepherds are often used by the police and the military, while they were the first blind eye dogs in the USA. There are couple of ways to identify the different Corgi types: Pembrokes tend to have docked tails but Cardigans will have bushy, fox-like tails. Pembrokes have pointed ears but Cardigans have round ears. Corgis were used to herd animals on farms. Some members of the breed have retained the herding tendency, which is something that dog owners will need to keep an eye out for. A pup could inherit the traits of either parent. Therefore, to get an understanding of the potential size range of a German Shepherd Corgi Mix, we need to look at the size of each parent. Corgis have playful personalities with a strong work ethic, resulting from their days as herders on farms. You can expect a German Shepherd Corgi mix to be an energetic dog that will thrive as a companion within a family setting. A Corman Shepherd should be relatively easy to train given the intelligence levels of both parents. However, we recommend puppy training and socialisation classes from a young age to have a solid platform to build upon. German Shepherd Corgi exercise requirements German Shepherd Corgi dogs will need quite a bit of exercise. The AKC describe German Shepherds as an active and athletic breed that requires a lot of exercise for their mental and physical health. Click here for more information on this characteristic Corman Shepherd Highlights Corman Shepherds are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Corgi and German Shepherd Dog parents. The main colors of Corman Shepherds are gold, white, brown and black. Rarely will you find a solid-colored Corman Shepherd; their coats are often a blend of two or more colors. Your Corman Shepherd will likely have blowing seasons to shed their seasonal coats. Brush your Corman Shepherd on a daily basis to keep fur tumbleweeds from taking over your home. The Corman Shepherd is a very friendly dog, and many enthusiasts love how well they interact with the children in their families. They can, however, be very protective and aloof around strangers or new pets. You may find that your Corman Shepherd tries to herd you or other humans. They can be somewhat stubborn, so it is good to curb this type of behavior early on with the proper training. Corman Shepherds have high energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. Corman Shepherds are also highly intelligent, which means they can get bored easily. Be sure to provide your Corman Shepherd mixed breed dog plenty of mental stimulation, or they may engage in destructive or unwanted behaviors. Corman Shepherd History The Corman Shepherd dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders started intentionally mixing Corgis and German Shepherd Dogs in the early s, likely in North America. Breeders may have wanted to combine the charm of the Corgi with the protectiveness of a German Shepherd Dog. They continued to create Corman Shepherds as demand for the mixed breed pups climbed. Even though the Corman Shepherd breed got its start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Corman Shepherd rescues, or check with breed-specific German Shepherd or Corgi rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. Corman Shepherd Size Since the Corman Shepherd is a relatively new mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between German Shepherd and Corgi parents, you can expect Corman Shepherds to be on the medium to large side. Most weigh in anywhere between 20 to 70 pounds and range in height from twelve to 15 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger. Corman Shepherd Personality Many Corman Shepherd enthusiasts describe their mixed breed dog as a spunky, loving pup who has a lot of energy to burn. Corgis are a herding breed, so you may find that your Corman Shepherd tries to herd you or other humans wherever they go! Thanks to the German Shepherd in them, Corman Shepherds can also be a very protective breed. This makes the Corman Shepherd an ideal companion for someone living alone who wants their own personal alert system, or with a family who is looking for a little added protection. This guarding instinct could turn possessive if not checked, so be sure to set boundaries with your Corman Shepherd as soon as possible. Be sure to provide your Corman Shepherd mixed breed dog plenty of mental stimulation, be in the form of some active time with kids in the backyard or fun puzzle toys. While Corman Shepherds can get attached to one particular person, they also make incredible family pets. As long as they are properly socialized, the Corman Shepherd is friendly enough to get along with just about anyone. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems Corman Shepherds suffer from include:. Another option is to check rescue groups or your local shelter for any Corgi German Shepherd mix that might need a new family and home. Brushing its short coat for 10 minutes twice a week is enough to keep the hair sleek and mat-free. Frequent bathing is actually harmful to them as it strips essential oils from its skin. The ears of the Corman Shepherd should be cleaned every two weeks. Its nails should be clipped once a month. If your dog inherits it, it could cause spinal problems or a slipped disc. The latter is a condition wherein the disks in the spine pop out, resulting in excruciating pain in the back and legs. Bloat: This breed is quite notorious for it. This is something owners should watch out for as it can easily progress to gastric dilatation-volvulus, a life-threatening condition. Joint Dysplasia: A lot of Corman Shepherd puppies have this condition. Obesity is another problem that owners should watch out for, especially since it increases the risk of cancer, back pains, and joint problems. The amount of dog food you need will depend on the breed and size of the animal. For a Corgi crossed with a German Shepherd, two to three cups of good quality dry dog a day is ideal. Since this mixed breed is prone to bloating, the small servings should reduce the formation of gas in its stomach. Your Corgi German Shepherd mix comes with a large appetite so portion control is necessary, otherwise, your dog will become obese. You should also avoid giving this dog a lot of treats since it gains weight fast. Stick to snacks with low calories if you really want to give your pet a healthy treat. Owners should also choose a dog food that has chondroitin or glucosamine, or both. These nutrients can help prevent hip dysplasia. Luckily for you, the market is flooded with high-quality dog food. You just need to make a good selection. Here are some suggestions: Just 6 Nutrish: These products contain rich proteins that include seafood, beef, and chicken, and lamb. It will also be happy running or brisk walking around the park or leisurely strolling about the neighborhood. Other games your dog will love is playing fetch, catching a frisbee or hide and seek hide a toy in your yard and have your pet look for it. You can even create a small obstacle for your pet if your yard is large enough. This dog also needs to exercise its brain to prevent boredom or depression from setting in. Try to plan activities that will stimulate both its mind and body, like ball games outdoors or squeaky toys and puzzles. Here are some suggestions on toys or puzzles you can get: Omega Paw Tricky Treat Ball: This is a great treat ball for active and tenacious dogs like a Corgi German Shepherd mix. The puzzle is designed so that treats fall out when they do roll it around. Kong ClassicDog Toy: Millions of dog owners love this toy. You can fill them with kibbles, peanut butter, or whatever treats you want. The Kong is strong and can survive your dog. Ifetch Interactive Ball Launcher: This gadget will keep your pet happy for hours. The toy launches a ball and will repeat the action once your dog brings it back and drops it inside the machine. Not only does it make your Corman run around to fetch, but it also teaches them to return it. The iFetch comes in a variety of launch settings and models to fit different sized dogs. Living in an apartment or a house without a yard will not be good for the Corman Shepherd. Its inherent intelligence means it will learn easily during training. Using this enticement will help motivate your dog to learn what it needs to. Start them early; an eight-week-old puppy can be taught simple commands. Here are some tips to make training your dog easier: Decide on the rules it needs to follow. For example, is it allowed on the bed or couch? Can it go anywhere in the house? Set up a space for your dog. Your pet will need its own space. Teach it to come. The first command your dog should learn is how to come to you. This will establish and reinforce your status as his alpha. Give it lots of positive reinforcement when it comes. Reward good behavior. Use positive reinforcement to reward your pet. Heap lots of love and praise on your pet and give it treats or toys. This dog can be a good family pet. But this dog also has special needs that not every owner can meet. A Corgi German Shepherd mix is perfect for someone physically active and who loves jogging or brisk walking in the morning. Families with large yards or who regularly access open spaces are also ideal. The Corman is also better off with a family that has older children. Young children are not strong enough to withstand its exuberance and could be injured. The Corgi German Shepherd mix is an adorable companion for active individuals and families who love the outdoors. Taking care of this dog is relatively easy, as long as you make the time to exercise and groom them. Just make sure you have the right information about them and the skills, patience, and love needed to raise them properly.

heeler poodle puppies - We can proudly boast that all of our dogs and puppies come from only the very best and proven bloodlines in the world. Each one of our males and females is health tested, titled, and has at least one parent that has earned a VA1 title Excellent Select, 1st place. The competition for VA is fierce and very few dogs attain this momentous achievement. Our Dogs Titles: So, what does all of this mean and why should it matter to a pet buyer? Working titles focus on the structural soundness and ability to demonstrate trainability and reliability in obedience, but more importantly, temperament is evaluated. Show titles provide a valuable tool for ensuring that the breed standard is followed. This is an in-depth evaluation that records the qualities and shortcomings of the dog. The temperament, conformation, courage, and function are reported. Temperament and character, along with physical and mental soundness play an enormous role in selectively choosing which dogs are breeding prospects. The German Shepherd is an athletic, loyal, self-assured, attentive, and intelligent dog. This applies to both competition dogs and family pets. Purchasing a puppy from titled parents ensures that the dogs being bred have passed vigorous testing and several judges along the way oversaw the process. Following this standard eliminates a biased breeder from breeding indiscriminately and encourages the goal to be producing the best puppies possible. At Centennial German Shepherds, meticulous planning and an abundance of thought go into producing every litter of puppies. Striving for excellence gives breeders credibility and provides the potential buyer with absolute assurance that their puppy is a product of deliberate and quality mating. Capo and our beautiful granddaughter, Shannon The meaning of Our New Kennel Name After working, showing, and breeding German Shepherds for over 25 years, we decided it was time to create a new kennel name and logo to signify our presence in Colorado the Centennial State combined with our Italian and Estonian foundation dogs. Centennial GSD chose to use the head of our gorgeous female Gucci and combine the American and Italian flags across her face to signify our team concept. Additionally, we blended the American and Estonian flags across our impressive male import's face to represent the Margman presence at Centennial. Our puppies are raised inside of our home where we can interact with them from birth until the day they leave with their new families. We assess them, take notes, photos, and videos, and create a detailed log about each puppy so that we can explain their individual characteristics and personalities as clearly as possible to anyone who is inquiring. We evaluate each puppy's growth and development, along with littermate interactions and responses to "daily life" situations on a full-time basis. Once the puppies are mobile, they are introduced to toys and small obstacles which are intended to spark curiosity and promote problem-solving and confidence. We understand that visiting the puppies or looking at photos is difficult, as both are only small snapshots of time in the rapidly changing life of a growing puppy. Visitors might experience the litter just before or after a nap, eating, playing, or any other event or activity that may skew the true personality of the puppy, and relying on a few minutes or even hours to make a decision can be overwhelming. For these reasons, frequent communication with prospective families from birth to placement is crucial. By clearly conveying expectations, we are able to assist in the selection process to ensure happiness and success for both the puppy and the individual families welcoming the youngster into their new home. Centennial GSD works hard at producing the finest German Shepherd Dogs through methodically and meticulously scrutinizing compatible bloodlines and pedigrees to ensure each breeding results in producing the best litter of puppies possible. Combining specific lines or avoiding lines that have genetic faults is important as we always have the betterment of the breed in mind. This is done by carefully choosing a mating pair that compliment one another by enhancing positive qualities and making an effort to reduce any faults known in one or both bloodlines. Our foundation dogs and the dogs we use for breeding trace back to the best Italian, Estonian, and German bloodlines. We seek out dogs with a geographically diverse gene pool while also studying line breeding to keep the integrity of the breed intact. By doing this, we reduce the risks associated with more closely related dogs. Our breeding dogs have certified hips and elbows, have been tested for DM, and are titled; ensuring that they are healthy both physically and mentally. None of the dogs in our breeding program and many generations back have joint or known hereditary issues and all of the dogs possess stable and wonderful temperaments. At Centennial quality over quantity always comes first. We stay in touch with our families after the sale of our German Shepherd puppies, whether it be for help with a question or just a friendly email to check-in. I sold several puppies almost two decades ago both out of state and overseas and have been fortunate enough to form beautiful friendships with many of those people that will last a lifetime. We take pride in our Colorado German Shepherds. Our goal is to produce healthy and beautiful German Shepherd puppies that win in the show ring, excel as working dogs, succeed as therapy or service dogs, and most importantly, flourish as loving family companions and guardians. I traveled to Estonia to pick up my female puppy Briatore Nordica, and while I was there I met another puppy her half-brother named Margman Othello. He was a gorgeous and friendly 7 month old sable youngster. Both puppies shared the same father, the magnificent multiple VA Margman Torsten. I was immediately smitten and consequently brought both back with me to Colorado. I also had the honor and pleasure of hosting Torsten, his owner, and his breeder at my home when they traveled to the United States for the first time after a Sieger Show. A few years later I imported another Margman female black and red who was bred to Torsten. Her puppies were wonderful and she enjoyed a nice life in Colorado. By this time Margman had become a household name and known for quality German Shepherds around the world. We had lovely puppies; a mix of sable and black and red, both long and short coats. It was then that I began my great love for the long haired German Shepherd. Rio was phenomenal in the show ring, he earned his SchH3 title, placed V1, and produced puppies that achieved the same and other working titles. He was a gentleman in the house and had a flawless character which he passed down to his puppies time and time again. His puppies excelled as therapy dogs, service dogs, and as healthy and loving family dogs. Rio was intelligent, possessed a solid temperament, and was stunning to look at. My beloved Rio was by far one of the best dogs I have ever had the privilege of owning and set the bar high for our future dogs. Now, many years later, I have once again imported a Margman dog; an impressive male to show, breed, and enjoy as a perfect companion dog. We look forward to combining the lines again and producing the best puppies possible. Expanding the gene pool while still staying true to the standard is our goal with future litters. Margman Dacapo is magnificent; an absolute dream dog. In we imported our first Margman long coat, a deeply pigmented black and red girl. Margit has bettered the breed by thinking outside of the box. Her sable and black dogs are the absolute best and she has also produced top long coats along with her phenomenal black and red dogs. She has combined strong females with the correct stud dogs to produce some of the best puppies in the world. She is devoted to her dogs and the future of the German Shepherd Dog. Her dedication is obvious, and the result has been and remains to be dogs that possess beauty, working ability, and outstanding character. Her vision is clear, her dedication is steadfast, and he loves the dogs so her goals are always set with the future in mind.
