By Manish Pandey Newsbeat reporter A new study suggests that pugs face such serious health conditions they can "no longer be considered a typical dog from a health perspective. The study compared the health of 4, pugs and 21, non-pugs. UK pugs are almost twice as likely to experience one or more disorders annually, compared with other dogs. Brachycephalic, or "brachy" dogs - like pugs, bulldogs or boxers - are bred for their distinctive looks. In recent years, pugs have increased in popularity, with a five-fold increase in Kennel Club registrations of pugs from .Health issues Overall, pugs were found to be around 1. The findings do not "come as a surprise" to Dr Myfanwy Hill, a veterinary surgeon who works at the University of Cambridge. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Researchers argue that the health of the dog should be prioritised over people's desire to own one That causes a lot of the problems pugs face - including issues with breathing, skin and their back. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome - a breathing issue - was the disorder with the highest risk in pugs, with the designer breed almost 54 times more likely to have the condition. Dr Hill says the narrow nostrils pugs have, is like "trying to breathe through a really narrow straw" and makes simple things like breathing "much harder work". She adds the "common image we have of pugs" where they're smiling and have their tongue sticking out, looking like they're panting, is not the "joyful" image we may think. Dr Hill says "they have more skin than they need for the size of their face", which can cause skin infections to occur, creating soreness and itchiness. And the "attractive tail" that people like actually shows a "malformed vertebra" which can result in more slipped discs. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Even if it looks cute, an oversized tongue can cause problems The research also showed pugs have a reduced risk of some conditions, including heart murmur, aggression and wounds. But researchers suggest their findings indicate many pugs may suffer from seriously compromised health and welfare. He says it's important to "focus on the health of the dog rather than the whims of the owner when we are choosing what type of dog to own". Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Experts say their body shape must shift towards a more moderate, and less extreme, shape if health and welfare issues for pugs in the UK are to improve What can you do? Dr Hill says people who buy dogs do so "in good faith" and it's important "not to attribute blame". But there are things that can be done for existing pug owners - like looking out for symptoms of breathing difficulties, such as excessive panting or lots of noise during breathing. In summer months, pugs are more at risk of heat-related problems because they have less airway - so need to be kept cool, she says. And while the "barrel-shaped bodies are really cute" - weight management is important because "an overweight short face dog like a pug is at even greater risk". And we need to make sure that they live long, happy and healthy lives," Dr Hill adds. Listen to Newsbeat live at and weekdays - or listen back here. Related Topics. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. You have come to the right place. This variety of German Shepherd has a beautiful coat and many dog lovers would like to own one. Below, you can find out what makes this pup so special, some myths debunked, and why finding a pup for yourself may be harder than you think. What is a Bi-Colored German Shepherd? Black and tan are the most common hues associated with this breed. So, what are bi-colored German Shepherds, in that case? This term traditionally refers to German Shepherds that are almost completely black , except for small spots of lighter color throughout their bodies. These patches of color can be found near their legs, under their tails, in their eyebrows, or the face. At first glance, a lot of bi-color German Shepherds are mistaken for black German Shepherds. This is because black is the predominant hue and the patches of lighter shades may be quite small or well-hidden. If a dog has even a small portion of another color, however, they are classified as bi-color German Shepherds. It should be noted that this term is only applied to German Shepherds with this specific coloring. The easiest way to know if a German Shepherd falls into the bi-color category is to check under the tail with black puppies. If there is a lighter patch of color, these pups can be classified as bi-color. Not everyone sees bi-colored German Shepherds as having a coat of a different color. Many breeders classify bi-colored pups as simply having a pattern of their own. Despite this, the AKC does approve and accept bi-colored dogs. These pups may be more readily accepted in working lines , however, where they tend to do better. Many German Shepherd enthusiasts may never see a bi-colored pup in real life, but just how rare is this dog? And is it possible to find one for your family? This distinction belongs to solid white, solid blue, solid red, solid grey animals. There is also the fact that this breed is more common than most people realize. They are often mistaken for being black German Shepherds. Increased awareness of what bi-colored German Shepherds look like may result in more of these pups being identified. All reputable breeders only consider health, physical traits, and intelligence when breeding animals together. They will often ignore coat colors as this has little bearing on the wellbeing or desirability of the puppies. Such breeding methods could ensure that the bi-colored German Shepherd continues to be an elusive hue for this breed. What Causes the Bi-Color Coat? It is only natural to wonder where these German Shepherds get their bi-colored coat from and why it is rarer. To understand this, you will require some background information on German Shepherd color genetics. If either of these colors is present in parent dogs, there is a higher chance of the puppies having coats with these hues. Black, on the other hand, is a recessive gene. This is why there are fewer numbers of all-black German Shepherds. Unless both parents carry this recessive gene, the more dominant colors will overshadow this darker hue. Even with two black German Shepherds, there is no guarantee that all the puppies will be black. As such, bi-colored German Shepherds also carry recessive genes. This makes it less likely for one parent to pass on the genes required for bi-colored dogs. This is why there is almost no way to predict whether or not puppies will be bi-colored. Instead, it is the luck of the draw. It also depends on the breeder you go to if you want a pup for yourself. How Much are Bi-Colored Puppies? As stated, bi-colored puppies will often show up in a litter without warning. This can make it difficult to determine how much these dogs cost. For the most part, the price will depend on the breeder. Some people may sell these puppies for the same cost as regular Shepherds as they are similar in every way to their counterparts. A few breeders may capitalize on this unusual coloring and charge more for this unusual coat. There is quite a bit to appreciate and understand about bi-colored German Shepherds. Apart from their unique coats, however, they are just like any other dog in their breed. Their coat certainly does make them a more exciting prospect, though, and a great addition to any family. Peter My name is Peter and I am a dog lover. I have two German Shepherd dogs, one of which is called Biscuit because his coat is very light with brown patches. My wife and I moved from the UK to Ohio where we now live with our two daughters. We love squash on weekends and following the English Premier League closely! Previous Article. The bicolor German Shepherd bears a good number of resembling features to that of the standard tan and black GSD option. Their adult weight comes in at about pounds on average for males, floating more on the higher end. For female German Shepherds though it drops down to around pounds. The similarity in height but rather sizable difference in weight makes the females look leaner in comparison to the males which makes it easier to spot the difference at a glance. As for their actual build, they have the same head shape, featuring that imposing profile with the elongated and well defined muzzle with pointed ears raised up, paired together with proper posture and perfection one often ties to German engineering. The differences come in the actual coat color where the entirety of the canine is covered in black fur with varying levels of tan coloration on his feet, on the insides of his ears and, sometimes, around the neck and the chest. The forehead is still domed which further accentuates that imposing stance they always have as it makes their brow appear constantly furrowed. They still possess a double coat made to help them withstand the colder climate which carries that largely dark tint, perfect for hiding in darker areas and more elegant than other two color options may be, though not as visually striking. All of that is capped off with their nice, long and bushy tail. The difference is mostly aesthetic with a little bit of extra grooming work needed for the long haired GSDs. Well, as with most other variations, it all happens due to a recessive gene that may or may not get passed down from parent to child. The reason for such a high difference between the lowest and highest pricing is that some breeders simply sell them off based on the price of the standard black and tan pups, while some will take advantage of this rare coloration and mark the price up. It does, to a degree, but not by much. In some cases, some breeders may even lower the price of a long haired specimen as the short haired trait is more desirable for show dogs, giving it that higher price tag. The standard ones are registered as normally occurring ones and are allowed entry into AKC-sanctioned conformation shows. The standard colors are as follows: Black and Tan. As such, many breeders will not be motivated to sell this animal and might keep it so that other people do not breed it. You will often need to work with a specific breeder who is open to creating this coat pattern in order to get a Bi-Colored German Shepherd. Bi-Colored dogs can look black, and many people mistake them for being black at first glance. This is especially true with short-coated dogs, which might hide the lighter hair in their coat really readily due to their thick and short coat. This coat color comes through in the working dog lines more than show dog lines. You might have better luck getting this color of dog if you work with a hunting dog or sporting dog breeder. These breeders are less focused on the AKC aspect of being a breeder and more worried about the athletic performance of their dogs. Color is a very secondary item on their list in most cases. This coat pattern actually comes in Agouti, grey, brown, and black. You might not be able to see the lighter parts of the coat very well in the grey and light brown coats, but they are there. A breeder will know what to look for to recognize this coat pattern in dogs that are not black. Von Stephanitz saw the foundational German Shepherd dog in the German countryside after he joined the military. He fell in love with the beauty and personality of the dogs, and he quickly decided he wanted to have some of his own. As a result, he got a breeding pair, and he started making litters of dogs. He created his own registry as well, using his dogs as the foundational example animals to help guide the breeding program. This allowed the breed to be seen by more people and to become more well-known. Once the original breed registry dissolved, the Second World War helped save the breed from falling out of favor again. The German military used dogs for a variety of purposes, and they became well-known as police animals in the US as well. Today, German Shepherds are still some of the preferred dogs for military and police personnel due to their loyalty, athletic ability, and intelligence. The Bi-Color German Shepherd has never been intentionally bred for. This is an outcropping of a small number of genetic pairings, and it is not as common as black coats or black and tan coats. However, this color pattern can certainly come through in some letters, making it a color choice that you can opt to make. A Bi-Color German Shepherd can be hard to recognize. These dogs might appear all black or all brown to you when you first look at them. It takes looking under the armpits or along the belly or on the muzzle to really see the lighter hair peeking through in their coat. Many people are still not sure that they see any lighter hair unless the dog has a lot of contrast between the light and dark areas of its coat pattern. This coat color can also vary widely in its contrast. This means that the lighter parts of the coat might not be as light as you might expect. In some cases, however, the contrast will be really striking and noticeable. It can be easy to think that a Bi-Color German Shepherd just has some aberrant light hairs here and there. Just like regular German Shepherds, this breed lives for about nine to twelve years. There are many factors that can impact the lifespan of your dog, such as your dog getting cancer, having an injury, or being very active compared with being very sedentary. Always be sure that your dog is eating a healthy diet and getting enough exercise. These factors are key to keeping your pet in the best health possible. German Shepherds live an average amount of time for a large dog breed, so you will not need to worry about them having a very short lifespan like a Great Dane might. You will need to make sure that your German Shepherd gets fed a quality kibble dog food that offers them joint support and a healthy balance of nutrients. If you are not sure what dog food to get, your vet can help you to create a feeding plan for your pet. Some people like to feed raw food to their dogs, but you will need to be sure that there is the right balance of nutrition in these foods for your German Shepherd. Not all of these foods are created equal, and some are not made to be healthy and well-balanced. The same can be said for feeding your dog raw meat as well. If you cannot get butcher cuts for your dog, you should avoid feeding real meat products due to the risk of contamination or dangerously high levels of fat. It can be a lot harder to feed your dog with raw food than you think. Kibble diets are very easy to feed, very stable, and can be trusted to give your dog everything that it needs to be in great health. This is one of the key benefits of feeding this type of food, and your dog will thank you for taking care of their health by feeding well-balanced kibble food. You should be sure that you are ready to commit to giving your dog at least a half hour of walking, running, or playing every day. Your dog will probably need even more time playing and moving around than half an hour, but you should make this your bare minimum. This breed was created to be a working companion to humans, and this is what they find to be the most comfortable. Keeping your dog busy can be as simple as teaching them lots of tricks, working with them on leash skills and manners, or taking them on hikes or long walks. Keeping your German Shepherd busy is key if you want them to have a long and happy life with you. Make sure that you have enough time and energy to keep your German Shepherd exercised adequately before you get one. Trainability and Intelligence This is one of the smartest dog breeds around. German Shepherds learn quickly and retain information really well. When these dogs feel connected with their family, they will work very hard to do anything that they are asked to do. You can count on your German Shepherd to embrace most tasks with joy and without complaint. For many dog owners, there is nothing as rewarding as working with a dog that loves to do what they are told. Top that off with the extreme intelligence of this breed, and you have a recipe for training success. These dogs also love to learn new tricks even into adulthood, so you should have no trouble continuing to learn and grow with your dog over the years that you own them. You can easily use your German Shepherd for agility work or for hunting. There are lots of great ways that your dog can compete, even if the dog show world is not the place for them due to their color. The Bi-Color German Shepherd comes from strong hunting dogs and working dog genetics, so they are always eager to help you to take care of tasks, learn new skills, and protect your home and property as well. Be sure that you do not encourage your dog to be aggressive toward people, as this can set a bad example for the behavior that you want your dog to show. You might have more consistent grooming to do if you get a long-haired German Shepherd, but both coat types are relatively easy to take care of. You will need to get some quality grooming tools to have at home. Most German Shepherds only need to see the groomer during the two times out of the year that they shed. This will be at the changing of the seasons. Also, be sure that you are not washing your dog too much. German Shepherd coats are made to repel water, to be easy to keep clean, and to be tough enough to handle running through the woods and the brush. Remember, these were sheepdogs in the beginning. Their coats are very practical and can be trusted to be pretty low-maintenance all year long. The bi-color coat pattern does not make them more prone to any specific kinds of ailments. This is more common in all dog breeds that are large and have deep chests. This might be the cause of a big meal, followed by lots of exertion, or it can just happen spontaneously. Surgery is necessary to correct this health issue. Hip and elbow dysplasia — By far the most common Shepherd ailment, this condition causes the hips or elbows, or both, to be unstable and wobbly. Dogs with this problem might fall down, have a hard time running or jumping, and be in quite a bit of pain. Eye issues- Some German Shepherds can be prone to eyesight issues. This is often checked out by the breeder, and all puppies should be certified to be free of these problems. Degenerative Myelopathy -This condition can cause weakness in the hind end, loss of coordination, and pain. It is a lot like ALS in humans and just as hard to treat or manage. While this list of problems might look discouraging to you, when you work with a skilled breeder, you should be able to get a certification saying that your dog will be free from most of these conditions. Breeders that care about their dogs will take the time to test the parents of all of their litters to try and avoid creating dogs with health issues. Since this coat pattern is rare, you might think that it will cost you more to get a dog with this coat pattern. In some cases, breeders will be trying to create this coat pattern, leading to higher costs to get a puppy. You might also need to be on a waiting list for a very long time to get a Bi-Color German Shepherd since this coat pattern is by no means guaranteed, even when breeding dogs that carry the right genes to make it possible. Make sure that you do not get taken in by breeders charging very high fees just because of the unique coat color of their dogs. Remember that these dogs can not be AKC registered, which means that there is a ceiling to how much they should cost. You should always trust your gut, and if the person that you are dealing with does not seem like they are upfront, look for another breeder to buy from. It is not worth it to struggle to make a deal to get a dog from someone who might not be a responsible breeder in the first place. Now that you know some more about the Bi-Color German Shepherd, you should feel more prepared to decide if you want to have one or if you think this is not the right breed for you. Make sure that you are ready to give your dog enough exercise each day, and also be sure that you feel that you are skilled enough to work with a large dog that is very driven. A dog trainer can help you to get the skills on board that you need to train this kind of dog if you are in doubt. The Bi-Color German Shepherd loves kids, having a job, and spending time with humans. This is one of the best dog breeds out there for beauty and intelligence, and getting a unique coat pattern in the deal can be a great combination! If the Boxer breeder sells quite a lot of pups but only has a pair of parents, you can think that it forces the parents to mate so they can have puppies to sell. The Boxer breeder should train pups in their first weeks. Every reputable Boxer breeder gives all the pups around eight weeks at least to stay with their parents. In such a time, the breeder should train the pups before it moves to its new home. The Boxer breeder would continuously be in touch. Other states. For the complete list please see our Boxer Breeders page. However, pet stores will often sell lower-quality puppies for less than this. It would be wise to go with a breeder if you want to get the best possible dog because the parents will have the highest standards of temperament and health. You can expect that boxer breeders in Indiana are more professional because they know that they need to keep their customers happy so that they can come back for future litters. The more expensive the dog generally means that there is a better history of health and temperament in both parents. They will also have more qualifications for being accepted into the American Boxer Club. There are many advantages of going with a breeder when it comes to owning a boxer puppy. If you buy one directly from a pet store then you may end up getting an older dog that somebody did not want any longer or possibly one that has been poorly bred by accident. If you go with a boxer breeder in Indiana then you will be able to get the best possible puppy for your family. They can help you find one that is just right for your home and lifestyle. You will also know exactly what conditions they were kept in when it comes to health and nutrition, which makes the chances of them being healthy even better. How to Find A Responsible Boxer Breeder in Indiana There are some red flags that you should watch out for when it comes to locating a boxer breeder. It may be tempting to buy from someone who is selling puppies for less than market value but this could end up being a bad idea. You need to understand what kind of conditions they were kept in because you do not want your puppy coming into the home with health problems right away. Asking friends and family or taking to social media can be a good place to start when looking for a boxer breeder in Indiana. It is more likely that they can get a referral from somebody who has used their services before compared to just randomly calling or emailing them. You should be able to do all of this online if you want to save time and feel safer about it. It is also highly recommended that you go with what the American Kennel Club suggests when selecting any dog breeder. They have certain standards that need to be met before they are approved so take advantage of this. Visit Your Indiana Boxer Breeder in Person When you are ready to visit your boxer breeder, be prepared to see how they do business. They should let you into the house or facility right away if it is clean and there should not be any loud barking or dogs in cages. You will most likely meet the parents of the litter as well as any other adult boxers that they have on-site at the moment. If everything goes well during your meeting with them then you can expect to get a healthy puppy from them after completing all of the payment and paperwork details. Visiting the breeder in person will also give you a better idea of what kind of animal they have kept in their house. There should not be any nasty odors or signs of neglect so keep this in mind when thinking about them as a business. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Indiana Always make sure that you ask for references or referrals when visiting your breeder since this is an important part of their job. You may even be able to go with somebody who has already gotten one of their puppies in the past so you can see if they are happy with how he turned out. References will also give you an idea of what kind of pets that they have raised in their house. You should not visit with somebody who has nothing but terrible things to say about them or if they do not feel comfortable giving out references at all. If your breeder will not provide you with references then you should be even more cautious about their practices and think twice before sending them any money. Ask Your Indiana Boxer Breeder if You Can Meet Past Customers Your Indiana Boxer breeder should be more than happy to help you find one, or a few happy customers, as most good quality reputable breeders love talking about their dogs. Meeting past customers will also give you a chance to ask questions about temperament, or any problems they may have had. I personally like meeting past customers the best when looking for puppies because it gives me an idea of what my new puppy might be like when she is at that age. Your breeder should have a vet they regularly use for all of their dogs and puppies. Your breeder will also be able to give you the contact information or provide it to you beforehand so that you can make an appointment and get your little one checked out as soon as possible. These shots can be given as early as 8 to 10 weeks old; all depending on your breeder, where they are located, and what is standard in the area. Remember, good quality Indiana puppy breeders should want you to have a happy healthy Boxer for many years. They should want to know that you are using a veterinarian that they approve of, because since this person has already opened up their home and hearts while raising this pup; they want to make sure that when your puppy comes home with you, he or she will receive the best possible care. Asking if you have other pets can also be seen as an ethical sign because it shows that the breeder wants to make sure the environment in which everyone is living is safe and beneficial for all involved. This Indiana breeder may even ask what kind of food or treats you plan on giving your pup so that they can share information about how these items were developed. If so, how are they being treated? They should have full medical histories on both mom and dad including what vaccines were given, if there were any incidences of disease or illness during pregnancy, where the litter was born, their weights at birth, etc. You might even ask if the parents are still available for stud services or babysitting because this shows that you care about more than just money. A good breeder will know what type of food is best for a Boxer Puppy and they may even suggest a specific brand. Ask if you can buy any of their current food because this is an easy way to save money, plus most reputable breeders have been feeding the same food for years so they know it works well with their pups. A simple way some people have been successful in training their Boxer Puppy is by taking them outside every 2 hours and giving them a chance to go potty on a patch of grass. Make sure you provide lots of praise when they do go. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. They are definitely one of the most beautiful dog breeds inside and outside. But the one thing that makes anyone recognize a golden retriever is their coat. Their long, shiny, fluffy coat that we all adore. This coat is like their crown, it what makes you tell a golden from a labrador, and there is no other dog breed that has anything quite like it. But not all coats are alike, and they require a lot of work and attention to stay glamorous and amazing. Causes and Solutions? However, we should still try to figure it out and see how you can solve the problem if there is one. Now you should simply focus on their training and socialization and forget about their coats as they still have a while to go. Here is a brief timeline so you know what to expect: Younger than 3 Months of Age: You will probably not be able to tell your golden retriever from a labrador by this age because their coats have not started grown yet. It will start at the tail with some long hairs there that stand out. This long hair will start at their tail and then travel up the body, going from their tail to their stomach, legs, till it finally reaches the head. You can learn how your golden retriever will change fur color here. I recommend checking it our as there are a lot more details there than I can discuss here and it will be really useful for you if you have a puppy so you know exactly what is going on with them and why. Other than proper nutrition and care, there is not much you can do to accelerate this process, and just let it take its time. Genetics You golden retriever could have wavy hair because their parents had wavy hair. If your dog is adopted or rescued good for you , then this may not be an option, but it could still may be the reason and so if you eliminate all the other possible causes, you could have nothing to worry about as well. Dry Weather Do you live in an area where the air is especially dry or has it been a dry season lately where you live? If so, this could be the reason. Solution Simply bringing your dog inside could help greatly with that. Another great idea is to get a humidifier, I use this humidifier from Amazon and I really like it, give it a shot. Of course, you will need to bring your dog to the room where the humidifier is at. You can also temporarily increase the frequency of their baths and use high quality shampoos. I have discussed the causes and solutions to each of these problems in the links, make sure to check them out as well. Solution Make sure that your dog is getting the proper nutrition for their age, size, and activity levels. You can check the recommended dog foods for golden retrievers at every age here. You should also give them supplements such as Omega-3 supplements that can promote hait growth and help their coats become healthier. Yes, they do actually help. For the exact dosage, I recommend checking with your vet. Solution Take your dog to the vet and have them checked out. In general, I recommend never skipping the regular checkups even if done annually as the vets will be able to catch on health issues before they become serious problems. Some issues can be cured completely quite easily if caught quickly, too. Call them. If they do tell you to bring in the dog, you should do that. Related Questions How do I make my golden retriever fluffy? To help your golden retriever grow a fluffy and healthy coat, they need proper nutrition, a good grooming routine, and Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Natural sources of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids include vegetable oils like Coconut oil, olive oils, and fish oil. Are all golden retrievers fluffy? No, not all golden retrievers fluffy. At the end of the day, all dogs are beautiful in their own way just as they are, they just need good care and attention. However, like most breeds, they can come with some health concerns and grooming needs you must keep in mind. While many coat issues are a simple fix, this can be a sign of deeper issues that need addressed such as poor nutrition. Your Golden Is Not the Right Age One thing many forget when adding a golden retriever to their family is that their coat will go through several phases. The coat that your puppy arrives to you with will not be the exact same texture as what they grow older with. If your dog is not yet reaching that fluffy golden retriever coat you were hoping for, it may not be time for them to yet. However, this is very normal, and a puppy coat will be much different than the coat later in life. You should focus more on training your pup and teaching good grooming habits at this stage. This feathering begins at the tail and moves upward to the head, while hair begins to darken in color. This is a good idea of what your adult dog will look like. It is important to note that some golden retrievers will take longer to reach their adult coat. After the three year mark, if your dog still does not have a fluffy coat or you notice any coat changes, this is when you should become concerned. If your dog has not yet reached adulthood, their coat is not a major concern and patience is key! As a pet owner, it can be challenging to know exactly what your pet needs and golden retrievers have a fairly high maintenance coat. You will want to offer your pet regular coat care as part of your daily routine. This should start as soon as you bring your puppy home, even before they truly need it. This will establish good grooming techniques and ensure that your dog is used to regular brushing. Removes dead skin cells which will cut down on the levels of dander your pet has. Removing excess dead hairs will avoid matting and keep hair detangled. Start with a softer brush for puppies and get a sturdier brush as your dog ages to remove unwanted dead hairs. Routine Bathing Will Keep Your Golden Fluffy Another important part of raising any dog but especially golden retriever is to routinely bathe your pet. This will help ensure that the coat remains supple and free of any debris. Dogs that have longer coats can easily become entangled with small twigs, burrs, and dirt which are hard to remove without regular bathing. Before bathing your golden retriever, remove any notable sticks or debris. You will want to find a shampoo that works well for the breed, which you can often ask a vet for assistance with. You should only bathe your dog as needed, and never more than a couple of times per week. If your dog is particularly hard to bathe or brush, you may want to take it to a professional groomer. This can also help if your dog has gotten matted or knots that you cannot deal with on your own. Overall, proper coat care is the first step in creating a fluffy coat. Some golden retrievers will simply not have as fluffy coats as others, which is something you cannot necessarily change. If your notice that your puppy grows a less fluffy coat and wavier coat, this may just be their genetics. The first step to determining if your dog simply does not have a fluffy coat is to consult your breeder. Often puppies of two golden retrievers that have wavy hair will also have wavier hair. If your puppy has a coat that resembles the parents, that probably means they too will have a wavy coat. If you have rescued or adopted the dog, this can clearly be a bigger challenge. However, it is simply put that not all golden retrievers will be fluffy, and this should not be a concern unless a major coat change is noticed. There is truly no way that you can alter a genetically based hair texture. Poor Diet and Nutrition One of the biggest reasons for a change in coat in an adult golden retriever is a lack of nutrition. This is also one reason why some goldens do not grow silky, shiny coats as they are not getting the nutrients needed. To ensure that your dog has a fluffy coat, you will want to guarantee they get the nutrients they need. Some signs of poor nutrition that can be noted from the coat alone are excessive shedding, bald patches or extreme loss of hair, dry hair, dandruff, and more. If you notice any of these signs, you will want to seek better quality nutrition for your pet. This can often be done on your own, but a vet can always point you in a proper direction. This will change as your dog grows older and you will want to update foods accordingly. Choose a higher quality food that has better ingredients. Unfortunately, better foods often come with a higher price tag but can be very beneficial to your dog. Try adding supplements to promote hair growth and quality. Omega-3 can be added and will help with coat quality immensely. This should be brought up at your next vet visit for more exact dosages. Environmental Changes Impact Coat Health If you have recently made a major move and brought your pet along or have had a recent change in seasons, this can have an effect. Dryer weather can often lead to a less supple coat. If you have noticed an increase in dry weather in your area, this could be the culprit. Offering more frequent bathing with a higher quality, moisturizing shampoo can also help immensely. If you live in an area that is dry often, you may want to combine these suggestions and speak to a vet for more options on what you can do for your pup. Unknown Health Concerns If you ever notice a change in coat in addition to a change in behavior or overall health, this can be a concern. While this could be a simple issue, it could also be something that needs immediate care. Beyond ensuring that your dog has a healthy coat, a vet can do screenings to find deeper issues. This will help guarantee your dog has a long, healthy life. Proper nutrition and quality routine care will almost guarantee your dog has a fluffy, soft, and silky coat. Share this:.
Lab Pointer Puppies Video History Though not much is known about its origination, this new breed has obtained recognition by the American Canine Hybrid Club as well as a few other clubs that recognize designer breeds. Temperament These energetic, sweet-tempered dogs have a pleasant and courteous disposition. Being fond of playing, they can get highly possessive as far as their toys are concerned. Though gentle and loving, they have an independent nature, not requiring too much attention, unlike other breeds. Moreover, separation from their owners for some time will not have a great impact on them. Having a loyal nature, they are extremely devoted to their masters, trying all means to please them. The Lab-Pointer behaves calmly with other canine breeds, also being friendly with children provided they are not rough with it. Another interesting trait this breed has inherited from the Pointer is its brilliant sense of smell that makes it alert on sniffing something unusual or encountering any unfamiliar face. Care Exercise It is essential to make them exercise regularly to maintain a good physical and mental health. To channelize its high energy levels in a positive way, owners should take their pets out on a walk two times in a day or make them run daily. Lab-Pointer puppies are more active compared to the older dogs as the latter tend to calm down with age, preferring to be indoors. Grooming Requiring less grooming, their short or medium-length coat should be brushed once or twice a week to keep off dead hairs. Bathe the dog when dirty to prevent them from getting too smelly. Cleaning their ears will minimize chances of infection. Health Problems This hardy breed has no known health problems as such. However, it might be prone to certain common ailments suffered by its parents like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, cataract, cherry eyes and allergies of Pointer as well as dysplasia, luxating patella, hereditary myopathy and deafness of Labrador. It may even suffer from some of the common dog diseases. Training The English pointer-lab mix is convenient to train though it sometimes becomes a mammoth task to obtain their attention. Therefore, they need a firm and tactful trainer who will handle them in a patient, thoughtful and gentle way, tempting them to follow his commands through rewards and incentives. Socialization and obedience training are also to be imparted to help them come out of their timid nature and mingle well with strangers, children as well as other pets. If kept as only pets and not for hunting then owners should make a conscious effort to keep their chasing instinct under control. Feeding Give your dog between 1. Moreover, they should also be provided a nutritious diet to meet their protein and mineral requirement. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Created by crossing the Labrador and pointer breeds, the Lab pointer mix is one of the latest designer dog breeds. Smart, devoted, and full of energy, these doggos inherited some of the best traits of their parent breeds. Pointerdors are very athletic and energetic dogs that need a lot of space to stay active and explore. As a result, these dogs make poor apartment and urban dwellers and are more suited to suburban or country living. Other than that, they are easy to train, relatively low-maintenance dogs, which makes them a good option for newbie dog parents. Pointerdors also love children and make ideal playmates to youngsters and are great pets to families with children of all ages. If you believe a Pointerdor will make a perfect addition to your family, keep on reading! Pointerdor Overview: Size: 22 to 28 inches tall, weighs between 35 to 80 pounds Coat: Short double coat, color varies Shedding: Moderate to heavy shedding Lifespan: 10 to 15 years Temperament: Athletic, intelligent, affectionate, and friendly Trainable: Highly trainable, responds well to positive reinforcement training Activity: Highly energetic needs up to two hours of exercise every day Best For: Active families and singles, first-time dog owners, homes with fenced backyards What Is A Lab Pointer? As the name hints, the pointer Lab mix is a mixed-breed dog developed by crossing a purebred Labrador retriever and a purebred pointer. However, they are recognized by the following organizations: American Canine Hybrid Club Dog Registry of America, Inc Lab Pointer Mix Appearance While there is no way of predicting the exact appearance of any mixed breed, the typical Pointerdor will inherit certain traits from both its parent breeds. Having said that, Lab pointers are typically medium-sized dogs with long and muscular bodies. This mix has a deep chest, a powerful stance, and long, strong legs made for running. They have broad heads, medium-length muzzles, and wide, floppy ears that hang down to the upper jaw. Their almond-shaped eyes are usually brown, but they can also come in a lighter color. Size Since the Lab pointer is a new designer breed, there are no set standards when it comes to size. As a cross between a pointer and a Labrador retriever, you can expect this mix to be a medium-sized dog. Pointerdors are usually from 22 to 28 inches tall at the withers and can weigh anywhere from 35 to 80 pounds. Coat Color This mix can inherit the coat color from either of its parent breeds or sport a mix of colors. Since both pointers and Labs come in a variety of different colors, there are many color possibilities for their mixed-breed offspring. In most cases, though, the average Lab pointer mix is either white, brown, or black in color. Coat Texture The Lab pointer has a short, dense, and waterproof double coat that is relatively easy to maintain. As a double-coated breed, these dogs tend to shed moderately all year round and go through a heavier shed during spring and fall. If you or any of your family members are allergic to dogs, research the so-called hypoallergenic breeds and low-shedding dogs like the labradoodle , as they are less likely to cause an allergic reaction in allergy sufferers. Luckily, in this case, both the pointer and the Lab are members of the sporting dog group and share certain character traits. There are two sides to every pointer Lab — a devoted family companion and an athletic gundog. The loving and friendly Pointerdor forms strong bonds with its family and likes to be involved in all family activities. They are best suited for large and bustling families that will include their dog in all indoor and outdoor activities. As an offspring of two sporting breeds, the pointer Labrador retriever mix is a highly athletic and energetic dog that needs plenty of space to roam around and explore. If not allowed adequate space to run and play, this mix will quickly become bored, frustrated, and destructively chew everything in sight, beginning with your shoes and progressing to furniture and other belongings. These friendly and sweet-tempered dogs get along with everyone, including children of all ages. Not only are these pooches gentle and patient with kids, but they also love to play and will quickly become best friends with any child capable of matching their energy levels. Activity Level As an offspring of two sporting dog breeds, the Lab pointer mix is a very athletic and energetic dog that needs a lot of activity, more specifically at least 1 to 2 hours each day. When not provided with the intense exercise it needs, this mix will soon become restless and destructive. Caring For A Pointerdor Like any other dog, a pointer Labrador mix will thrive and stay happy when properly taken care of from a young age. To keep your dog happy and healthy, be sure to come up with a consistent care routine as soon as you bring them home and stick to it for the rest of their life. Exercise As mentioned before, Lab pointers are very athletic and energetic dogs that need a lot of exercise to stay physically and mentally stimulated. Ideally, this mix needs up to two hours of intense activity every day to release all their pent-up energy and stay in excellent shape. Activities such as running, jogging, swimming, agility exercises, and games like fetch are all good ways to keep your dog exercised. Intellectual Stimulation Lab pointers are intelligent dogs that can easily become bored and frustrated if not exercised or mentally stimulated every single day. Like their Labrador parents, these dogs tend to be mouthy and will chew everything they can sink their teeth in when bored and under-stimulated. To avoid getting your belongings chewed, invest in tough and durable chew toys , and keep your mix stimulated with interactive and puzzle toys. Companionship Loving and loyal, Lab pointers form strong bonds with their owners and make affectionate family companions. They like to spend time interacting with their people and are the happiest when they are involved in all family activities. Grooming Despite being moderate-to-heavy shedders, Pointerdors are fairly easy to groom. Their short double coats have to be brushed two or three times a week to remove loose hair and dirt. Bathe your mix once every two to three months or every time they return dirty from an outdoor adventure. Check their ears for waxy buildup and dirt once a week, and clean them as necessary to prevent painful ear infections. Diet An ideal diet for a pointer Lab mix should be formulated for a medium-sized dog with high energy. Their food needs to have high levels of protein, fat, and carbs, combined with all the essential vitamins and minerals your dog needs to stay healthy. To prevent obesity and all health problems associated with it, avoid free-feeding your dog and stick to a regular and consistent meal schedule. Known Health Problems Pointer Lab mixes are generally healthy, but they can be affected by the same health problems that are often seen in their parent breeds. The most common health issues they experience are: Hip and elbow dysplasia. Lifespan Sociability When looking for a Lab Pointer puppy, you should keep in mind that there are three different types of Pointer dogs. All three have been crossed with Labrador Retrievers in the past, and you should check with your breeder what type of Pointer they are using for breeding. For this article, we are considering and looking at only the English Pointer, which is the most common Pointer that is crossed by breeders to produce Lab Pointers. Any reputable breeder will likely want to meet you too. You should also ask to see the health certificates of the parent dogs. This will help you to ensure they are not at high risk of suffering from any adverse health conditions. The Pointerdor makes an almost perfect hunting dog. People have been breeding both the Labrador Retriever and English Pointer as hunting dogs for many years. With both breeds having a slightly different purpose. The job of a retriever is to flush out the game birds and retrieve them once the bird has been shot. Often this involves swimming into a lake or pond and taking hold of the game with their soft grip jaws and then swimming it back to the hunter. Pointers, on the other hand, are particularly good at locating the game and pointing the hunter towards it. The Lab Pointer, being a hybrid of the two breeds, is a dog that has the ability to both point and retrieve. Thus, making them an almost perfect hunting dog. Pointerdors can become destructive. A board Lab Pointer will quickly start using their pent-up energy to dig holes in your garden and chew up everything in sight. They can also develop quite an annoying barking habit. For more information on how best to prevent this, see the section below on exercise. The personality of each Pointerdor can be a bit hit and miss. Labrador Retrievers are well known for their eagerness to please. They are very obedient dogs and will generally respond well to instructions. The English Pointer, however, can have a bit of a stubborn streak. Unfortunately, neither personality trait is consistently dominant in Lab Pointers. And as such, it is impossible to tell which parent breed a Lab Pointer puppy is going to take after. As mentioned above, they can be a little headstrong if they take after their English Pointer parent. However, as a rule, the mix of the two breeds produces a friendly gentle and hard-working dog. Lab Pointers need their human companions to take an active role in their lives, and they are not the type of dog that likes spending long periods by themselves. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are incredibly gentle with children and will have boundless energy to run around and play. You will still need to watch them around young children. As Lab Pointers can become overly excited and may easily knock over a young child. Lab Pointers usually form strong bonds with all their family members and will always be keen to come inside with them each night. They are also quite protective dogs, and although their bark is considered worse than their bite, a Lab Pointer will do an excellent job of sounding the alarm if you have any unwanted intruders. Provided they are socialized while they are young, they will quite likely accept another dog coming into the family, and if raised with a cat will also consider your cat to be part of the family. Socializing your Lab Pointer is essential if you intend to allow your dog to play off-leash in dog parks and open spaces. It should be conducted when they are young and continue throughout the life of your dog. Pointerdor owners say these sturdy dogs are softies at heart and love to please their people. Bred from Labrador Retrievers and German Shorthaired Pointers, these puppies are one of the most sought-after breed mixes. Their history goes back long before the term designer dog was coined. Lab Pointer mix origins — why breed a hybrid? Using two dog breeds from the same group, in this case the sporting group, does however increase the chances that the resulting puppies will be similar, because the parents have similarities too. It is interesting to note that Lab Pointer mix origins, go back much further than the desire for designer puppies. Basically the Labrador Pointer crossbreed is nothing new and has been around as a capable hunting companion and all round family pet for many years. Part of the sporting dog group, and many serve dual roles as hunting companions and family pets. They are modern, multi-purpose, gun dogs capable of hunting up game, pointing at it, and retrieving it. These breeds are both athletic working dogs that need plenty of exercise, are very playful, and get bored quite easily. For this reason a German Shorthaired Pointer and Lab mix can be a good choice for an active household that can make plenty of time for play and who are willing to devote time each day to training their dog. These are loyal, intelligent dogs who can be independently-minded, but are very amenable to training. They form strong bonds with their owners. They do best in a stimulating environment — one that challenges them both mentally and physically. Their offspring typically weigh anywhere between 50 and 85lbs, with males being larger than females. And cross-bred puppies are likely to grow to a height of around 23 inches at the shoulder a little less for females Shedding When it comes to coat length and texture things are a bit more predictable with a GSP cross as both Labs and German Shorthaired Pointers have short fur. Labradors can be heavy shedders due to their double coat. The GSP coat is very short and easy to care for. Mix pups do not shed like a lab and their coats are often sleek and shiny. Exercise Coming from two working breeds, Lab Pointers have a lot of energy. They love being outdoors and are ready for anything — running, swimming or hiking. These pups should also have an enclosed yard where they can run around and stretch their legs on a daily basis. They can become destructive, burning off their excess energy by chewing. Exercise is also an important way to keep these high-spirited dogs healthy, and stop them from becoming overweight which could lead to health problems down the road. Health Any puppy has the potential to inherit health problems carried by its parents. Different breeds are often prone to different diseases, and this means that some cross bred puppies have an advantage in terms of health. One of the advantages of buying a cross breed puppy is that the known reduced health risks are reflected in lower pet insurance premiums. Lab Pointer mix puppies Thanks to their spirited nature, Lab Pointer mix dogs need a lot of exercise, and space. A big back yard is best — somewhere fenced in where they can run and explore. Alert and intelligent, the gun dog breeds and breed mixes are usually a joy to train. Part of the sporting dog group, and many serve dual roles as working companions and family pets. Often with a second dog backing the first in an identical position. Setters and Pointers perform the same function and were very popular before breech loading guns were invented. They gave the hunter a chance to load their weapon and get close enough to the game to take a shot, before the bird was flushed. These dogs were bred to gallop over huge areas of moorland and open countryside, searching for tiny traces of scent in areas where game birds are few and far between. This required a big powerful deep chested dog capable of quartering large areas independently, with a hunter following — on foot or on horseback These are the true Pointers — sometimes called English Pointers. However, what many people mean when they talk about Pointers is a very different dog. They are modern, multi-purpose, gun dogs capable of hunting up game, pointing at it, and retrieving it. And for the most part, that is a good thing! These breeds are both are athletic working dogs that need plenty of exercise, are very playful, and get bored quite easily For this reason a German Shorthaired Pointer and Lab mix can be a good choice for an active household that can make plenty of time for play. And who are willing to devote time each day to training their dog. Lab Pointer mix origins — why create a hybrid? To understand the origins of a Lab x Pointer mix, we can begin by going back a few decades. The early crosses were often promoted as having the best attributes of both parents. Claims were made that Labradoodles for example would all be hypoallergenic or at least low shedding like their poodle parent. When we cross two very different dog breeds, which attributes each puppy will get from each parent is to some extent a lottery. The puppy could get the best attributes of both parents, or the worst. Using two dog breeds from the same group, in this case the sporting group, does however increase the chances that the resulting puppies will be similar, because the parents have similarities too. It is interesting to note that Lab Pointer mix origins, go back much further than the desire for designer puppies. HPRs have probably long been included in the occasional Labrador breeding programme, albeit illicitly, in order to incorporate the pointing instinct into certain lines of retrievers. Basically the Labrador Pointer crossbreed is nothing new. And has been around as a capable hunting companion and all round family pet for many years Lab Pointer mix size Both Labs and German Shorthaired Pointers are among the larger of the medium-sized dogs. Their offspring typically weigh anywhere between 50 and 85lbs, with males being larger than females. And cross-bred puppies are likely to grow to a height of around 23 inches at the shoulder a little less for females A Lab crossed with a true Pointer however, is likely to be a taller dog altogether. The true Pointer reaches up to 28 inches in height, and some of his cross-bred puppies may well do the same. Labrador Pointer mix colors There are just three coat colors for Labrador Retrievers — black, yellow and chocolate. Pointers, on the other hand, can be found in 8 different colors. Including liver, lemon, black or orange. And in combinations of these colors with white. They often have distinctive and beautiful markings with usually a white muzzle with dark ears and eyes. German Pointers come in all kinds of pretty variations of the color liver a rich dark brown either solid or mixed with white spots or ticking. In the UK, the GSP is also found in all those variations but with a black base color rather than liver. Within any hybrid litter, you can expect a lot of variation. A German Shorthaired Pointer black Lab mix might not necessarily be black. If it favors its Pointer parent, it could be a mix of colors. Even experienced breeders sometimes have a hard time predicting what their new Pointer Labrador pups will look like! Labrador Pointer cross shedding When it comes to coat length and texture things are a bit more predicable with a GSP or Pointer cross as both Labs, Pointers, and German Shorthaired Pointers have short fur. Labradors can be heavy shedders due to their double coat, The GSP and Pointer coat is very short and easy to care for. Mix pups may take after either. The German Wirehaired Pointer has a broken or rough coat which is low maintenance A quick once over with a body brush two or three times a week, and the use of a de-shedding tool when necessary should be sufficient to cover the grooming needs of your Lab Pointer Mix pup. Lab Pointer mix temperament There are two sides to a Labrador x Pointer mix. The sweet-natured family pet, versus the energetic working gun dog. These are loyal, intelligent dogs who can be independently-minded, but are very amenable to training. They form strong bonds with their owners, so can be prone to separation anxiety. And they do best in a stimulating environment — one that challenges them both mentally and physically. While it might seem like this headstrong mutt needs a lot of exercise and attention, just like either of their parent breeds, they will repay you over and over with their affectionate, loving nature. It is worth noting that the pointing breeds, which traditionally had to work much more independently and over greater distances than the retriever breeds, tend to be more independent in nature. Labrador versus Pointer temperament The Labrador Retriever is one of the most co-operative dog breeds on the planet. That is why they are so widely used as service and therapy dogs. When you mix a Labrador with a German Short Haired Pointer, you are likely to lose some of this intense desire to co-operate with people, that is the hallmark of the Lab. You may gain some pointing skills, and you may have a dog with better genetic health. But that pure Lab temperament is hard to beat from a training point of view. When you mix a Labrador with a true Pointer, the resulting puppies can be very different indeed in temperament from a Retriever puppy The Pointer is a more independent and less biddable dog that the Labrador. So its important to take this into account Labrador Pointer exercise Coming from two working breeds, Lab Pointer mixes have a lot of energy. They love being outdoors and are ready for anything — running, swimming or hiking. A Labrador or GSP needs at least an hour and a half walking each day. A true Pointer needs far more and many are ideally suited to being exercised on horseback. These pups should also have an enclosed yard where they can run around and stretch their legs on a daily basis. They can become destructive, burning off their excess energy by chewing. Exercise is also an important way to keep these high-spirited mutts healthy, and stop them from becoming overweight which could lead to health problems down the road. Lab and Pointer mix health Any puppy has the potential to inherit health problems carried by its parents. Different breeds are often prone to different diseases, and this means that some cross bred puppies have an advantage in terms of health. When it comes to Lab Pointers, the ones to watch out for are elbow and hip dysplasia, epilepsy and progressive retinal atrophy PRA. It can affect both Labs and Pointers. Labs and Pointers are also prone to the degenerative eye disorder, PRA. However, this disease, like many others can be screened for and eliminated from the gene pool. They should screen for diseases such as PRA as standard. They can also carry a genetic form of hemophilia known as von Willebrands Disease which prevents blood from clotting. Again, these are diseases that your breeder should screen for with every litter. What next? Sadly the growing popularity of hybrid dogs has led a lot of unscrupulous dog breeders to enter the market. A good breeder will be happy to answer all your questions, and let you look around their kennel to meet some Pointer Lab puppies. It can be very rewarding to open your home, and your heart, to a rescue dog. Breed rescues can be found in most regions and often have cross bred dogs and puppies looking for new homes. They will offer a supportive and knowledgeable adoption service. We have provided a list of dog rescues in North America and the UK. And from registering your puppies should you decide you want to breed from your dog Potential owners should be aware that adopting an unknown dog always carries some risk. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. They are not purebreds like their Labrador Retriever or Pointer parents. The most common colors of coat for a Lab Pointer are creamy white, brown, and black. Exercise and outdoor time is vital to the Lab Pointer. Lab Pointers can have a higher than usual prey drive, so make sure not to leave them unsupervised. Lab Pointer dogs and children get on great together. They will form strong bonds and become playmates, but early training and socialization is very important. Lab Pointer History The Lab Pointer is one of the newest mixed dog breeds around, with most estimates saying it came on the scene some time in the last decade. These days, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the United States. The Pointer hails from England, where they were bred for tracking and pointing purposes. The Lab Pointer has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. Although, as is always the case with newer mixed dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 35 to 80 pounds and range in height from 22 to 28 inches. The mixed breed likes to be around humans and will want to take part in most of your daily activities. To that end, the dog does not do well left alone for long periods of time. So if you have a large and busy family, the Lab Pointer will fit in well with your schedule. Although, be warned. In general, Lab Pointers are loyal but not especially suited to being guard dogs. If you have kids, all the better. Lab Pointer Health Lab Pointers are generally considered to be healthy dogs; although, the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Labrador Retriever and Pointer face. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. The Lab Pointer needs a very high amount of exercise. If you come across water on your hike, the breed will love to go swimming. Weekly teeth brushing sessions should be implemented with a Lab Pointer. Your vet can help advise you about which brand of toothpaste is appropriate for your dog. Bathing your Lab Pointer only needs to be done if it comes back in a dirty state after an outdoor adventure. They should not be clicking loudly against the floor. Make sure to check their ears for debris and pests, especially after spending time outdoors, and clean their ears regularly. Your vet can give you advice on how to do this at home. Lab Pointer Feeding An ideal Lab Pointer diet should be formulated for a medium-sized breed with high energy. In general, the Lab Pointer is an adaptable dog when it comes to climate. Just make sure to provide a suitable dog coat if the weather gets too frosty and your canine seems cold. Also, during hotter months, make sure shade and fresh water are always available during the outdoor sessions the mixed breed loves so much. Luckily, the Lab Pointer is a mixed breed that is relatively easy to train. Even with a well-trained dog, you should always supervise play time between kids and dogs so that neither party accidentally harms the other. Make sure to properly introduce your Lab Pointer to any other pets and set boundaries right from the start. Ultimately, early socialization really pays off with this mixed breed. Make sure to reward your Lab Pointer for good behavior and adhere to a proper training regimen when you bring them home to your family. Lab Pointer Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Lab Pointers because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Labrador Retriever or Pointer breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Black, orange, liver, lemon, yellow, chocolate Suitable for: Active families, homes with room for play Temperament: Loyal, loving, intelligent, easy to train, friendly, gets along with other pets when socialized These animals are gentle, loving, and extremely loyal to their owners and families. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Is the breed energetic? Are they easy to train? Their overall health is good for mixed-breed dogs, as they take on inherent health concerns of their parent breeds. This means they enjoy the stimulation and need attention. Once they are used to their surroundings and family, these dogs will show their gentle, loving, and loyal sides. If your family is searching for the perfect companion dog for both the adults and children in the family, these dogs may be your perfect solution. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Their high energy levels make them the perfect companions for kids who love to run and play. They are also gentle enough to play without hurting smaller children. Yes, the Lab Pointer mix does well with other animals, when socialized properly and from a young age. Due to the fact both parent breeds were bred for hunting, it is important to introduce your new puppy to any small animals or other dogs you have in the home while they are young. Due to their intelligence, this breed can learn easily and can make other animals part of their family. In most cases, 2 to 2. This food can be divided to offer your pup morning and evening feeding. When caring for puppies, remember they often need more food throughout the day to ensure they grow up strong and healthy. Due to their energetic natures, long walks, playtime throughout the day, and other ways of keeping them stimulated should be done quite often. This will help avoid weight issues and boredom. Using treats and positive reinforcement are great tools to implement when going through the training process. Remember, however, that Lab Pointer mixes are known for being stubborn. Their trainer needs to be firm during this process. While this is a part of life when it comes to owning a dog, brushing their coats at least twice a week will help reduce the amount of hair you find around your home. Ear cleaning is very important for this breed of dog. Due to their floppy ears, infections are possible. With routine cleanings, you can help your dog avoid the pain these infections cause. When brushing your dog, take the time to clean their ears and check for any visible issues. Always use pet-friendly toothpaste and a gentle toothbrush during this process to help make the experience less frightening for your dog. Long nails can chip and break causing your dog unnecessary pain. Only clip the tip of the nail and avoid cutting into the quick, which is where the blood vessels are located. This can cause heavy bleeding and discomfort. Minor Conditions.

Poodle Exercise Requirements Overview Exercise plays a crucial role in a dog's overall health and can even extend a dog's life span. Offering proper exercise goes way beyond taking a Poodle out for a walk now and again. This section will make sure that you know how to find the right balance of activity for a Poodle of each variety Toy, Miniature and Standard and of any age. We will go over: How your Poodle will benefit from scheduled activity What type of exercise is best for this breed, for each size variety Exercise requirements for all stages of a Poodle's life How to overcome the most common reasons for not exercising your dog Alternative activities you can do with your puppy or dog 6 Top Exercise Tips Why Exercise is So Important When a Poodle receives enough proper exercise, the benefits are enormous. Can help slow the development of arthritis Can increase life span, as diet, exercise, dental care and living conditions are the top 4 elements that affect how long a dog lives. In many cases, just sticking to a walking schedule can combat some of the most difficult behavioral problems. For each of these elements, it is simply a matter of allowing a Poodle to release built-up energy and frustration in a healthy way. If exercise is done randomly and without structure, you won't see much improvement. Destructive behavior - Without regular release of energy via healthy, purposeful activity, a Poodle of any age may instead focus his energy on chewing, digging, scratching or other destructive behaviors. Barking - One of the main causes of excessive barking is frustration and exercise can help eliminate this element. Attention seeking behavior - Dogs that miss out on regular one-on-one time with their owners can end up constantly seeking attention. However, when this need is met, the dog can relax at home, knowing that another session is due to happen soon. It can also lead improvements in: Sleep - Dogs that routinely exercise sleep better at night, both in how long they sleep and how much REM deep sleep they receive. Just a slight case of sleep deprivation that snowballs as the days and weeks pass by can cause all sorts of behavioral issues. This can be resolved with proper exercise. Overall mood - With tension and frustration released in a healthy way, half the battle is done. The other part is mental stimulation.Dogs are happier when they routinely can 'be dogs'; they are happiest when they can smell scents and see sights other than what is inside the house. This creates more of a calm, relaxed mood when indoors. Social Health - An often overlooked yet important part of a Poodle having the right amount of exercise is how it will improve his ability to be well-socialized. When done correctly, regular exercise will: Teach socialization- One of the most crucial aspects of raising a dog to be tolerable of other animals, people and situations is to expose him to the outside world on a regular basis. Many owners of Poodles that act hyper toward cars, dogs and people will avoid taking the Poodle out for a walk; yet this is the very thing that will lead to the Poodle learning to behave more ahead. In time, regular outdoor activity will allow a dog to gain the experience needed to have self-confidence while out and about. This is particularly true when you use this time to work on Heeling techniques. Regular walks with you gives your Poodle a 'job' and taking this on as a team each day can greatly improve the relationship between owner and dog. Just as you make sure that your Poodle eats super healthy foods, you puppy proof the house to keep him safe, you brush his teeth to prevent tooth decay and you work hard to keep him well-groomed… exercise should be a non-negotiable element of caring for your Poodle. The Best Exercise for a Poodle While quick bouts of energy filled activity like playing fetch does have its place, for daily exercise, walking your Poodle is the way to go. This holds true for tiny toy Poodles, medium sized Minis and large Standards. It is the best type of exercise for this breed for several reasons: 1 It is low impact. When your Poodle will be performing an action daily and essentially forever, you want that activity to offer all of the benefits without putting undue stress on the body. Repeated strenuous exercise puts stress on the joints, overtaxes muscles and can cause injury. Once you fall into a routine of walking your Poodle often enough and for long enough periods of time more ahead , his cardiovascular health, stamina and muscle strength will gradually improve… as this happens, walking speed can be incrementally increased so that your Poodle receives the same amount of body conditioning. The only things that you will need is a leash and harness more ahead and some patience if your Poodle needs some practice to keep his behavior in line more ahead. Also, with few exceptions, you can walk a dog during any season we will discuss winter, rain, heat, etc. In other words, while you may be walking very slowly, if your toy Poodle is trotting along beside you at a moderate pace, your dog will be receiving moderately challenging exercise in comparison to your stroll. Scarlett, 2 years old Photo courtesy of Dorothy How Much Exercise a Poodle Needs Puppies - For toys and miniatures under 1 year old and standards under 18 months old, owners must carefully schedule exercise times. Offering quick bouts of outdoor walking is a great way to for the puppy to discharge their abundant energy. That being said, greatly exceeding exercise limits for puppies can be detrimental to their growth. During the first year for toys and miniature Poodles and until about 18 months old for standard Poodles , the bones are still forming and growing. At the end of all major bones are growth plates; these are soft areas that contain rapidly dividing cells that are instrumental in allowing the bones to develop and grow longer as the Poodle pup matures from puppy to adult. Once a Poodle is done with puberty and is officially an adult dog that is done growing, the plates harden and calcify. Until that time, over-exercise can cause injury to this soft bone tissue and interfere with normal bone growth. So, you'll want to find a balance of enough walks, for the proper duration, to allow the pup to release energy and start becoming socialized to the world, yet be careful to not exercise your Poodle puppy to such an extent that it could possibly harm those growth plates. Do keep in mind that normal play in the house, etc. Over-exercise relates to repetitive actions such as running, walking briskly, etc. You just never want to push a young puppy into activity that puts stress on the body and raises the heartbeat if he is not up to it. In looking at these guidelines, we must remember that the duration is the same, no matter the size of the dog. This is because it is the pace at which the dog moves that equates a state of exercise. Toys will trot and standard Poodles will trot, and it is the owner that will need to adjust the pace at which they walk to keep the dog going briskly. A good rule of thumb is: 5 minutes per day, for each month of age. Toys and minis will at this point, move ahead to adult exercise requirements. You'll want to go at a moderate pace that is not overwhelming. Young puppies are only starting to learn about how to walk on leash and it can take some time for them to focus on proper heeling. Ahead, we'll dive into tips to making walking a more pleasant experience coming up. Adults - An adult Poodle in his prime, 1 year old toys or 2 years old standards to 7 years old, should have 60 minutes of exercise per day. Do keep in mind that no matter how active a dog appears while inside the home, this does not decrease the amount of time that the dog should be walked. There will be days that your schedule simply does not allow this or days when weather is so severe that you'll need to offer alternatives; however those should be the exceptions. Most Poodles do best with those 60 minutes split up into two 30 minute or three 20 minute sessions. We recommend: Morning - If you will be leaving for the day, it's a good idea to exercise your Poodle before you leave. Early evening - When you arrive back home, the two most important things to do will be to bring your Poodle to the bathroom area outside and then take him for a walk to release the built up tension that developed while the dog was home alone. Two hours later - Once dinner has been served, some household chores have been done and you are thinking about possibly relaxing for the night, this can be a great time to go for the 3rd and last walk of the day, should you decide to do 3 walks per day instead of 2. While you won't want to exercise your Poodle right before bedtime, heading out for a quick jaunt about 2 hours before the expected sleep time can help your dog calm down and relax as the family settles in for the night. Scotland, 10 months old Photo courtesy of Marlyn Seniors - Do not make the mistake of assuming that an older dog doesn't need exercise. Unless a senior Poodle has health conditions that prohibit him from exercising, you'll want to continue with daily walks. Some owners feel that a senior Poodle is more than content resting around the house. And while seniors are often complacent…they've seen it all and have done it all… and not much may excite them… Being out in the fresh air and stretching their legs can put a little pep in another wise ho-hum step. Regular light exercise can relieve joint discomfort that is common with older dogs, helps the senior dog maintain muscle mass and offers all of the benefits that it does with a senior dog's younger counterparts. Osteoarthritis is not uncommon for senior Poodle; though light exercise can often help alleviate symptoms and this will be something that you'll want to speak with the vet about. You'll want to monitor the older dog to see how he deals with duration, cutting back as needed or slowing down the pace. Health Exceptions - There are some health conditions , of course, that will necessitate a cease in exercise and others that require certain exercise as part of the treatment program. A good example of this is luxating patella slipped kneecap. During recovery, strict bed rest is often prescribed along with medications to reduce swelling and help with pain. However, afterward many vets will suggest strengthening exercises, most notably walking the dog uphill, to help build muscles that surround the knees. Always check with your Poodle's vet during and after any health issue for exercise restrictions and instructions. Pregnancy - In general, healthy pregnant Poodles should be taken for walks and exercised as normal up until the last week of pregnancy. Easy yet consistent exercise during pregnancy helps a female dog stay well-toned which is believed to help with labor and delivery. In most cases, exercise can gradually resume 2 to 3 weeks after giving birth. Depending on the age and size of your Poodle, this may simply be a casual stroll for you. With toy Poodles, do not expect to get in your cardio while walking the dog however, the fresh air, sunshine and movement will be beneficial to you as well… studies show that time NOT spent sitting is as important as exercising and that walking slow is much better than being sedentary. Take note of how your dog's legs are moving… He should be at a trot, with a short stride. Overcoming Reasons for Not Walking Your Poodle There are quite a few reasons why owners may be reluctant to take their Poodle out for regular exercise. Here we will discuss some of these concerns and how to deal with them. However, avoiding walks will not help resolve the issue. Many dogs will bark madly at anything that's within their line of sight… people, other dogs, cars, birds, squirrels, etc. The key to all of this is that a dog reacts that way when the element is intriguing or if it gives the dog concern. And both of those attitudes will fade more and more as the dog is exposed to the elements. If you've ever seen a dog barking like mad when being walked, if you could fast forward 6 months and the owner consistently kept taking the dog out along the same route that whole time , you'd see a very different dog. That dog would be socialized to every aspect of the outside world and those perceived threats would no longer cause alarm. The best thing to do is to ignore the barking and your neighbors that are giving you funny looks and with your Poodle safely on a harness not a collar and the leash kept short, keep walking at the set pace. Walk with determination and without pause, no matter how hyper your dog acts.Any time that the barking stops for even just a count of 5 if it is severe , give enthusiastic praise while simultaneously reaching into your pocket to dispense a small treat as you continue on the path. Exercising in hot, humid weather is certainly a concern for this breed and for all dogs. However, with some planning, you can continue to make sure that your Poodle stays active enough during the summertime. Here are some tips: Protect the paws from hot pavement. Far too many dogs have their paws scalded by hot pavement and this can easily be fixed by either using a super high quality paw wax that will create a layer of protection or by placing comfortable doggie shoes on your Poodle. Protect the nose from sunburn this can happen within 20 minutes with direct sun which can lead to peeling. Use a quality nose balm. Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day. Even on exceedingly hot days, early morning and then again right before sunset, the temperature can often be in the 70's or low 80's which is tolerable. Not to mention, the sun's rays will not be as strong. Bring along water and plan one break. At just about the halfway point, take a break preferably in the shade. During the break, offer a good amount of cool water to your Poodle a canine travel water container works well… the cover works as a bowl and you can place a couple of ice cubes in the insulated thermos to keep the water cold. Do always use caution; if you feel it is just too hot out to safely walk your Poodle, look to alternative activities more ahead. While there are exceptions, walks during the winter can be doable if you plan ahead. For 'normal' winter days, here are some tips: Protect the paws from winter elements. Use a quality paw wax or slip on no-skid canine booties. Dress appropriately. This is important advice for both you and your Poodle. When an owner is freezing and miserable, they will be much more likely to rush the walk, take a short cut or skip it all together by rushing back inside after the dog goes to the bathroom. If you bundle up we're talking hat, scarf, thick winter coat, gloves and durable water-proof boots , you'll be much more apt to stick with your Poodle's exercise program. Likewise, particular for toy Poodles, owners often need to take steps to help the dog stay warm. A thick lined vest, hoodie, coat or sweater will help your toy Poodle keep his core body temperature warm and toasty. Sophie, 9 months old Photo courtesy of June Nelligan Protect the nose - Cold air and whipping chilly winds can quickly cause a chapped nose. Be pro-active in protecting your Poodle's nose before chapping happens. Use a dab of quality nose butter. Depending on the weather, and the safety of the road conditions, you may need to take a shorter route or limit the time spent outdoors. Of course, during blizzards or a severe weather event, staying inside is the safe option. While some dogs are super active in the house, most do need to have scheduled walks. When veterinarians suggest exercise guidelines, this is taking into account that a dog is going to be moving about the house. By heading outside, you will accomplish many things: You'll know that your dog is meeting the requirements of up to an hour of exercise per day. It is also an opportunity to socialize your dog, work on heeling and spend quality time together. Alternative Activities Maybe it is pouring cats and dogs outside, a blizzard is blowing in, or it's degrees out… no matter what may be the case, you may be looking for ways to keep your Poodle active if a walk is out of the question. Here are some tips: 1 Summer Tips: If it is the summer heat that is getting in the way, setting up a kiddie pool in a shaded area of the yard can be just the trick to get a dog moving. As with most activities, your enthusiasm will play a role in how much fun your Poodle has. Another great option is to set up a sprinkler. Most dogs love the thrill of chasing after osculating water and this can be a great way to offer a bit of cardio in the summer. Lastly, swimming is a great exercise that puts very limited stress on the body… However, do keep in mind that not all Poodles automatically know how to swim well. While the Poodle was bred to be a water dog, retrieving fowl from lakes and ponds, that was quite a while ago and today's modern Poodle may need practice to feel comfortable in water. Stay super close to your dog … and using a canine life vest is always a good idea. After swimming, be sure to shampoo and rinse the coat well, as any chlorine residue can cause excessive dryness as well as discoloration of the coat. Make it more challenging as your Poodle catches on, following him about the house to keep him on track and keep him moving. For fetch, all you need is a long hallway and a ball. As we mentioned above, your attitude and level of eagerness will play a huge role in how receptive your Poodle is and how much energy the dog puts into playing. Top 6 Exercise Tips 1 Make a schedule. Life can be exceedingly busy and there will be times that you come home exhausted and see your Poodle is perfectly content cuddling on the sofa with you while you watch TV. However, when you have times blocked off for taking your Poodle out for walks, it's easier to stick with the program. Maybe your Poodle behaves just fine no pent-up energy and is more than happy to hang around the house… so why bother? Exercise is important for 'now' and for 'later'. Every session works toward building a stronger, healthier dog. These short bouts of activity can be training times as well. Whether it is to get your Poodle so used to other dogs that he learns to calm down… or you want to gradually get him to no longer fear traffic… or you want to teach the "Heel' command until your Poodle marches like a little trooper by your side… Make each walk have more meaning by working toward a goal together. Teaka, 4 years old Photo courtesy of Rolande and Dan 4 Assess and adjust. Throughout your Poodle's life, his exercise requirements will change. As he builds endurance, you may need to pick up the pace. If the weather is hotter than you expected, you may need to cut the walk short and schedule it for later in the day. As a senior, he may need 3 shorter walks as opposed to two longer ones. Always be mindful of how your dog is handling the activity and make adjustments as needed. It cannot be overstated how vital it is to have your Poodle wearing a harness any time that he is on leash. If a leash is connected to the collar, this places stress on the neck which can cause injury, including collapsed trachea. This is especially true for toy Poodles, though it does apply for miniatures and standards as well. Not only do you have the weight of the leash, there is the element that if the puppy or dog jumps to the side, runs ahead, gets wounded up in the leash, etc. You will also find that it is much easier to control a Poodle when he is wearing a harness, which makes walking a more pleasant experience. Particularly relevant when house training , it's never a good idea to let a Poodle pee and poo along the way when you could have had the dog use the designated bathroom area first. When you return home, allow your Poodle another opportunity to pee and poo in the bathroom area before being brought back into the house. A: As long as you bring your Poodle for regular walks and are making sure that he meets the exercise requirements for this breed, there is nothing wrong at all with having your dog in a stroller. Just like a car seat or a bicycle basket, strollers or slings are another form of safety and in this case, you are the mode of transportation. Q: I really wanted to start teaching my Poodle puppy how to navigate obstacles and weave poles, but I've heard that puppies shouldn't be exercised too much. Would this be harmful? A: It is true that too much exercise is not good for puppies; however this has gotten really exaggerated by some sources. Puppies are naturally very active and this is a good thing! Being sedentary is not advantageous for any dog, of any age. The only type of over-exercise that interferes with growth plates is severe exertion that would cause the puppy to pant and really struggle to keep up…. Exercise that taxes the body and puts strain on the dog. And this would have to occur on a regular basis to cause a problem. Normally playing and running about the house is expected and helps a puppy grow up healthy. Just do not push the pup to do more than he shows enthusiasm for, taking breaks or calling 'time' after 20 minutes or so. By the way, teaching weave pole obstacles is a great idea and can be super fun for both of you. What do you think about canine treadmills for exercise? A: These are, mostly, used for physical therapy and some large breed dogs may do well with treadmills, especially if they are overweight and need some vet-directed additional exercise. However, these can be very expensive and are not a good substitute for one-on-one play with your Poodle. And if you must stay indoors on many days, playing fetch or other games that offers your dog interaction with you will be much better for his mood than walking on the machine. As a final note, if this were to be used, we'd suggest extreme close supervision as injury would be a top concern. Q: What, exactly, should my reaction and my action be when my Poodle barks like a madman at other dogs when we're out for a walk? A: The first thing to keep in mind is why a dog does this. Imagine that you spent your days surrounded with only dogs… no humans at all, just canines. Then as a brief respite, each day for 20 minutes, you are let out into the world to exercise and during that time you actually get to see other people. BUT, you are not allowed to interact with them. You are instructed to keep walking and ignore them. Would you go a bit nuts after a while? So, the point of this that many owners need to remember, is that a dog will bark at other dogs out of frustration. Many times, this is not an aggressive maneuver at all and it does not mean that the barking dog is misbehaving. It can often be resolved by just allowing your dog to meet the other dog. If your Poodle did nip, that would then be another topic. But you'll never know how he does with other dogs, unless you give him chances with a variety of dogs and allow him to learn to socialize while out for his daily walk. We'd suggest calling out to the other owner with a friendly, "Hi, do you mind if my dog says hello to your dog? At that point, allow the dogs to be dogs. Without interference, they should be allowed to sniff each other. Yes, it will be the rear ends. That is where their scent glands are located and this relays information back and forth regarding: health status, mood and gender. In some cases, the dogs will then back away, which is your cue to thank that owner and continue on your way…. As long as the other person doesn't mind, a short bout of playing is just fine and will allow your Poodle an opportunity to learn canine socializing. Do always keep a close eye on your dog, with the leash in hand, ready to pull him toward you should the other dog get too rough another reason why a harness is the better choice over a collar when on leash. The right exercise for a puppy is different from what would best suit an adult dog or senior dog. Over exercised dog symptoms Poodles can go hard and keep going, often not knowing when to stop. With any dog, it is possible to over-exercise them, especially in hot weather. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a dog that has overdone it. Poodle Exercise Requirements There are three main types of exercise and activity you must provide your Poodle every day. Daily walk 2. Purposeful Activity and Play see Poodle exercise ideas below 3. Mental stimulation Poodle Walking Requirements A Poodle requires a daily walk of between 20 — 60 minutes at a comfortable but brisk pace for them depending on whether they are a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle. As many Poodles have a good level of stamina they can go for much longer distances if you wish. By observing your Poodle you can assess how long of a walk they need. If they are panting excessively, are falling behind, or stop and lay down they have probably had enough. It is probably a good idea to end the walk. If they are happily trotting along you can choose to walk a bit further. This can be a walk on a leash around the block or can be off leash exploring at the local park. The daily walk is not only a good way to release some pent up energy, but is also a good opportunity for training and is great for building your bond with each other. It also provides mental stimulation by way of the sights, sounds and smells they come across and social interaction with other dogs you meet along the way. A short daily walk is more beneficial that nothing all week with a long walk at the weekend. If you prefer you can take your Poodle for two shorter walks instead. Obviously, every dog is an individual even if they are the same breed. For a puppy or a senior dog, the exercise requirements will be different. See below for a guideline for puppy exercise and senior dog exercise. Purposeful Activity and Play In addition to one or two walks a day it is important to provide other activities that can help burn pent up energy and provide enrichment for your Poodle. This can include playing with toys and playing games with your dog. Play games There are countless fun games that you can play with your dog. Chew Toys Chewing is a natural instinct for dogs and has many benefits including keeping them busy and occupying and stimulating their minds. When a dog chews it releases endorphins to the brain giving them a natural calming and good feeling. To learn more about the benefits of and the best chew toys see here. Dog toys that move on their own There are many dog toys that rattle, roll and move about by themselves. These are ideal for your Cockapoo to get them having fun and active play. Play with other dogs Provide the opportunity for your Poodle to play with other dogs. This is not only great to burn energy and stimulate their mind, but teaches them important social skills. Not all Poodles are dog-friendly, so ensure yours is to prevent the possibility of fighting. Tug of War A firm favorite of many dogs. Make them crouch and pull back to use extra energy. Ensure that this is a controlled game and they release when you want them to. Also, a great way to build muscle and strength. Swimming Many Poodles are keen swimmers, particularly Standard Poodles. Swimming is a great exercise for a Poodle as it burns energy and uses all the muscles groups, in particular, the front legs and shoulders. It is a good exercise for dogs recovering from injury. For more on swimming exercise for dogs see here. Stair Walking A good energy burner if you have stairs in your home. Have them return down the stairs at a slower pace to avoid injury. Walking up stairs or a hill strengthens the rear legs as the full body weight of your dog is on each leg as the step. As they descend the stairs they are using the opposing muscles for stability. For more on stair exercise for dogs see here. Backyard agility Set up an agility or obstacle course in your backyard. Poodles are great agility dogs. You can use items you have around the home, build your own agility or you can get reasonably priced agility sets on Amazon. You can include tasks such as the weave, hurdle jumps, tunnels or jumping through hoops or a platform to jump on and stay. Fetch Playing Fetch with your Poodle is another fantastic way to burn pent-up energy. Poodles are generally ball or toy crazy and can play this for hundreds of throws. A great alternative is to use an Automatic Ball Launcher so your dog can play Fetch by themselves. As the Poodle is intelligent and highly trainable as long as you focus their attention they learn to use this quickly. However, it is a good idea to provide other activities that stimulate the mind. Mental exercise can burn as much energy as physical exercise. Many dog behavior problems are a direct result of boredom. Kong toys which you stuff with food and treats work in much the same way. Puzzle toys are great for times when your dog is home alone. A popular game that involves learning is to teach them the names of their toys. Dogs can learn hundreds of words and names. Food enrichment Turn mealtimes into an opportunity for your Poodle to get a mental challenge and enrichment. Instead of feeding them from a bowl, give them activities that require them to work for their food. To learn more about feeding enrichment for dogs see here. To learn more about environmental enrichment for dogs see here. How much should you exercise a Poodle puppy The exercise suggestions above relate to a healthy adult Poodle. The exercise needs of a puppy are quite different. With puppies, their bones, muscle, and joints are still growing and developing. Toy and Miniature Poodles are fully grown by about 1 year of age. For Standard Poodles, they may still be growing for up to 18 months. Overly strenuous walks are not necessary and in fact, could possibly cause harm. An activity that is high impact on the joints should also be avoided The best exercise for a young puppy is free play with age-appropriate toys. Socializing with other puppies or friendly adult dogs is a great way to burn some of that puppy energy along with teaching them the social skills they need. As your Poodle puppy gets older you can take them for short informal walks allowing them to sniff and explore and get used to being on a leash. Check with your vet when it is alright to venture out to the park or street. The general rule of thumb for walking a puppy is around 5 minutes for every month of age. So, for example for a 4-month-old puppy, a walk of 15 minutes to 20 minutes is enough. Monitor your Poodle puppy on the walk for signs such as lagging behind, lying down or panting. End the walk if they seem too tired. Mental stimulation is important for puppies and can tire them just as much as physical activity. For more on mental stimulation for puppies see here. However, it is still important that they remain reasonably active to keep their joints and muscles mobile and to manage their weight. It is also important for an older dog to maintain muscle strength and mobility. This aids in protecting and supporting their aging joints and tendons. This video shows some simple and good exercises to help maintain your older dogs body. Many dogs develop arthritis as they age. Exercise for them becomes a balancing act. It is important to keep their joints mobile and manage weight, but too much can make them sore. In Summary All of the Poodle sizes are a moderate to high energy dog and require a least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise daily to keep them healthy and prevent boredom. This daily activity should include a daily walk along with some purposeful activity and play. It is also crucial that they receive mental stimulation and enrichment to challenge their active minds and prevent boredom. Mental exercise can tire a dog just as much as physical activity. Let us know in the comments how much exercise and what types of activity you do with your Poodle and whether that are a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle. This dog breed is extremely popular due to its looks, lack of shedding, and hypoallergenic claim. No dog is truly hypoallergenic. One of the most crucial parts of keeping a Poodle happy and healthy is ensuring they are getting enough exercise each day. Poodles require up to 60 minutes of exercise per day. Proper Exercise When exercising your Poodle you need to keep a few things in mind. The activity needs to have a duration. You also want a little exertion in the mix. If you and your Poodle are taking a walk, which is one of the best exercises for the breed, then keep up a brisk pace that helps them burn off a bit of energy. Exercise time should be broken up into minute or minute intervals throughout the day according to their age and needs. Just like children, your Poodle grows and changes which means their exercise needs to change with them. They are also full of energy. While your puppy is growing, they need exercise to dispel this energy and avoid becoming too rambunctious. Breaking up exercise into minute intervals is great for young pups. Taking a nice walk helps them get used to the world around them, the leash , and being with you. The important thing to remember with Poodles at this age, however, is that they are still growing. Let your pup play and rest as they need to. A good rule of thumb when determining how much time you should walk your puppy is to use 5-minute intervals per month of age. A 3-month-old puppy would walk for 15 minutes a day. A 4-month puppy would walk for minutes and so on. You can even break the walks into smaller intervals while your puppy is growing into the routine. By the time they are considered an adult, they will be on the right track to getting their minutes of exercise each day. It should be broken up into timed intervals throughout the day. Time guide of how much exercise your puppy needs: 3 months — 15 minutes.

They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.
