Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Disposition and Temperament Boxers are happy, playful, curious, and energetic. So much so that many remain extremely fit and athletic into their old age. They are very intelligent, eager, quick to learn and known to be a good breed for competitive obedience. Boxers bond closely with their family and are loyal and affectionate. In fact, they are known to get along well with children. A properly socialized Boxer will get along with dogs and other household pets, such as cats, but small animals such as rodents or birds may be too tempting. Being energetic and playful, the Boxer can become boisterous and jump on people without proper training and leadership. Boxers need to go on a daily walk and get daily mental and physical exercise. Without it, they can become stressed out. You should start training your Boxer while it is a puppy: Boxers do best with dominant owners who can be firm, consistent and committed. You need to establish yourself as the leader of the pack with this dog breed. Owners who do not establish dominance often find their dogs to be stubborn or demanding which can hamper the owner-pet relationship. Living Conditions As for living arrangements, they can be fine in an apartment if sufficiently exercised even though they are active indoors, but Boxers really do best with an average-sized yard. They are also temperature sensitive, overheating easily and chilling quickly. Boxers have a natural tendency to protect their owners and home, and although visitors who the dog recognizes are not seen as a threat, will protect their owners if they sense danger. Boxers are courageous which makes them great watchdogs and will even restrain intruders. It is important to know Boxer puppies require human leadership and need to be taught not to be boisterous or jump up on people. It requires very little grooming. Brush it with a rubber curry brush once or twice a week to keep it looking good. The Boxer tends to be a clean breed only occasionally needing a bath. Origin The name Boxer is thought to come from the way they use their front paws for just about everything; pawing at its food bowls, toys, and even its owner in a playful way. The Boxer was developed in Germany in the 19th century and its ancestors were two German mastiff-type breeds. They were later bred with the ancestors of the Mastiff and Bulldog. Boxers were first used for dog-fighting, bull-baiting, cart pulling, cattle dogs, rounding up livestock, and to catch and pin wild boar and bison until hunters could arrive. Later they became popular theater and circus dogs. There are two types of Boxers: the German and the American Boxer. German Boxers have bigger heads and are generally more muscular than American Boxers. See store for details on a puppy. The American Canine Association, Inc. The American Canine Registry.
As always, you should meet the puppy before deciding whether to buy, and a reputable breeder will let you meet the parents and, potentially, any siblings. Familial traits can be passed from one dog to the next, although individual attributes are more important than breed attributes. Finding a Boxer Shepherd at a dog shelter might take some patience, but you can always ask for other mixed dog breeds that resemble the Boxer Shepherd. They were used as war dogs thanks to their power and bravery. Today, the most common breed of dog for use in explosives detection is the German Shepherd, which is also used as police dogs and service dogs, because they are known for being one of the easiest dogs to train. Boxers Are Great with Kids Boxers have a somewhat unfair reputation for being fighting dogs. They are lovers rather than fighters. Boxers are family orientated and they make especially good pets for children. They are patient and gentle with children, despite being headstrong and boisterous at other times. Boxer Shepherd Mixes tend to take on this attribute, so they are incredibly loving, but they do demand love in return. It was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club back in and even has its own motto — Utility and Intelligence. It was given the motto by breed champion Captain Max von Stephanitz. Stephanitz is widely credited with having introduced the modern German Shepherd breed and was responsible for setting the standards for the breed. Utility and intelligence are arguably the two words that best describe this heroic breed and the attributes that make it popular in a host of service roles. The German Shepherd is used as a guard dog, service dog, police dog, and in a range of other service roles. It is easy to train and can learn new commands quickly and easily. While the Boxer is said to share similar attributes, he can come across as being accident-prone and a bit dim. With constant training, the possibilities with this breed are almost endless. The German Shepherd can be shy and wary of strangers, which means that some Boxer Shepherds can adopt a similar outlook. Take them to puppy classes, enroll in a dog agility class, and take them down to the park where they can meet other puppies and their owners. Boxers can be a bit silly and your Boxer Shepherd Mix might have fits of boisterousness to contend with. While they will usually calm this activity around children, you might want to clear the decks for a five-minute charge. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are easy to train, constantly willing to take on new information and commands, and they crave the love and attention of their owners. Although they have adopted some of the rambunctiousness of the Boxer breed, they usually reserve this for when small children are out of the way. The German Shepherd Boxer Mix will require regular walks, at least once a day, but their high level of intelligence means that they will learn games to play with family members of all ages. They can become very close friends with children, and through socialization at an early age, they should be welcoming of new additions to the family. You should monitor activity around your children because the size of this breed means that they still pose a danger even if they are being friendly. They will enjoy spending time at the park playing, and they can also thrive with another dog in the house. This breed can live with cats and other pets, although this is always easier if you can introduce them at a young age, and the size and liveliness of the Boxer Shepherd Mix means that it can be intimidating for smaller animals like cats. They are bright and attentive with a fun and silly side, that can keep all family members entertained for hours on end. Below are some things to consider when you are thinking of adding one to your family. They are likely to be voracious eaters, gobbling up food you put down. The primary food source for the German Shepherd Boxer Mix should be meat protein such as is found in chicken, lamb, or beef. You can also introduce fish oil to aid in keeping a healthy and shiny coat, while carbohydrates and fat give your dog the energy they need to get through the day. They are also strong and intelligent. This combination means that you will benefit by giving your dog regular exercise. You should walk your dog at least once a day, ideally giving him two or more walks. To keep your Boxer Shepherd Mix entertained and switched on, you can enroll in agility classes or take them hiking or climbing with you. Both breeds and the subsequent crossbreed will enjoy spending a lot of time outdoors. Unless they receive appropriate mental stimulation throughout the day, they are more prone to destructive and unwanted behavior. German Shepherds are renowned for their ability to learn. This is why they are chosen as service dogs, and why they can make exceptional pets. Even when you think your dog has learned everything it possibly can, a Boxer Shepherd Mix will surprise you by picking up new habits. Training helps ensure that the habits they do pick up are desirable. With that said, you will need to assert dominance; otherwise, your dog will try to rule the roost. You will have to meet and overcome challenges from the German Shepherd dominant breed. Because they can easily become bored, you will also have to find new and innovative ways to mix up training and continue to provide a mental challenge. Dog agility is a great way to combine flexible training with physical exertion and socializing. Some have a long, German Shepherd style coat, but most tend to get the short coat of their Boxer ancestors. Those with short-haired Boxer Shepherds should only need to brush once a week, but if your cross has inherited the long-hair of the German Shepherd, you will need to groom two or three times a week , especially if your dog is active in fields or, worse still, ponds and lakes. Bathing may be necessary but should only be done when necessary. Brush teeth at least two or three times a week, ideally every day, and wipe their ears clean once a week to prevent ear infections. Boxers are prone to a number of health complaints including cancer, cardiomyopathy, hypothyroidism, bloat, and allergies. German Shepherds tend to suffer from bloat, myelopathy, and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Both breeds suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia. With that said, there is no guarantee that your dog will suffer from these conditions, but you should keep an eye out for any signs of them developing. Minor Conditions. Your dog should have a healthy weight. Extra weight or being overweight is bad for dogs because this places additional pressure on its spine. Obesity can also lead to some medical conditions that can be fatal for your dog. One of the most common causes of obesity is giving your dog treats. Therefore, you should never give your dog food treats when training your dog. The following dog food brands are perfect for German Shepherd Boxer mix breeds 1. You can use the clicker for any trick. Just click the clicker after your dog follows your command and then click this again when you want your pet to repeat the behavior. Clickers are available in most pet stores. Avoid Confusing Your Dog Dogs can be easily distracted. Just a loud noise or strangers can distract them from learning new tricks. So at an early age, train your pup in a quiet environment with no distractions. Avoid confusing your dog at this stage so he can learn tricks fast. Start training your dog indoors and gradually introduce him to the outdoors. You will know that he is ready for outdoor training once he is less distracted to noise and other pets and people. A Boxer German Shepherd dog can be trained to become service dogs and guard dogs. You can ask a professional to train your dog so he can learn obedience training, protection training, attack training and so on. It is a cross between the Boxer and the German Shepherd. Very friendly and plays great with other dogs big and small. He also plays great with our three cats. He loves rides in the car and truck. I found her over the internet and fell in love with her picture. I drove 30 miles to go get her. She's had her tail docked. But she still likes to chase her stub even though she can't reach it. I've seen her go after it for awhile though. And when she's excited her whole body shakes. She's a sweet puppy and her best friend is my one year old son. I noticed that Boxer-Shepherds aren't a popular hybrid, but I think I've come across one of the best breeds that will ever have existed. She's in great health. She's 4 years old in this picture. She loves to run around sometimes, but most of the time she lays around. She is .She has another dog friend named Biskit, which they get along okay but do fight lot. Nothing serious though. Finding a healthy German Shepherd Boxer puppy. Where Do They Come From? The name German Shepherd used to be an umbrella term for several different kinds of herding dogs. In the s, a German cavalry officer developed his perfect herding dog from these breeds. That same officer, Captain Max von Stephanitz, co-founded the first club dedicated to the newly established breed. German Shepherds are the dog of choice for military and police work. The Boxer also originated in Germany sometime in the late s, although ancestors of this breed go back as far as 2, B. Those ancestors were known as big game hunters able to take on bears, bison and wild boar. The Boxer is a worker bee. Known for its ability to herd cattle, work with military and police forces and provide protection. German Shepherd Boxer Mix Appearance? Your first generation German Shepherd Boxer mix puppy will have floppy ears and a short coat. Their markings will vary and may include the darker muzzle of the Boxer dog. Tan is a common color to see within a German Shepherd Boxer litter of puppies. This is a broad, sturdy and strong mix. They will weigh around 80lbs in adulthood, and sadly might inherit the sloped back of the German Shepherd or the reduce muzzle of the Boxer. Both features with severe potential for health problems attached. A German Shepherd has a softer temperament and natural reserve. Boxers are a little more outgoing. Their puppies could inherit one or a mix of both personalities. Even within a single litter, some puppies could be a little shy, and other bouncing extroverts. Lifestyle and Family Both parents develop a strong bond with their owners and family members and are natural herders. That can extend to herding other pets and small children. An Austrian study of dog bites in children found that kids are five times more likely to be bitten by a German Shepherd than a Labrador Retriever or a crossbreed dog. For this reason, German Shepherd mix breed dogs might not be the best fit in a household with young children. However, breed is only part of the story with dog bites — training and socialization are important factors too. Ultimately, you can expect your German Shepherd Boxer puppies to be smart, loyal, playful, obedient and protective. The exact traits will differ from dog to dog, though, depending on their personal temperament and that of their parents. Care and Exercise These are dogs that generally like to run and play. They are not likely to be happy living with a couch potato. German Shepherd Boxer mixes need plenty of outdoor time, exercise and enrichment toys to be content. Without that, the puppy can be rambunctious and moody. These are intelligent dogs that not only respond well to training but thrive on it. Start the training early. As the dog grows older expand it, so you keep your best friend mentally stimulated. Socialize at a young age, as well, and introduce the puppy to a diverse group of dogs to prevent aggression issues later in life. When adequately socialized as a puppy, the adult German Shepherd Boxer mix may acclimate better to new pets. Health Concerns All designer dogs can inherit characteristics and health issues from their parents. The best way to understand the potential health problems of a crossbred puppy is to look at what conditions frequently affect their parents. Conditions common in Boxers include: Hip dysplasia. Should a Boxer Mix take after their Boxer parent, they will be a playful, energetic, and friendly dog that loves their family and loves being active with them. Boxers are known for their energetic and exuberant personalities. They bond closely with their families, tend to have a cheerful disposition, and also tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they are friendly dogs, they do have the instinct to protect their families. If the other parent breed has similar traits, then you should be able to expect a similar temperament in a Boxer Mix. Asking the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix is a good start. You can also meet the mother dog to get a feel for her temperament and to see what behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should be socializing puppies while they have them, it is up to you to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home. Boxers are moderately adaptable dogs. Because of their energy, they tend to do better in homes with yards where they can run. But, they can adapt to apartments as long as they get exercise and mental stimulation throughout the day. Although all dogs are sensitive to heat, the Boxer is even more so because of their short snout. And, because they bond so closely with their families, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The other parent breed could introduce some traits that could affect the adaptability of a Boxer Mix, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Knowing more about the other parent breed will help you get a better idea of what range of potential characteristics to expect. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? A Boxer Mix can inherit any combination of the potential health issues common to one or both of their parent breeds. Or, they could inherit none of them. From the Boxer side, potential health conditions include degenerative myelopathy, thyroid deficiency, hip dysplasia, and heart conditions. Boxers also tend to have sensitive digestive systems, which often makes them gassy. As a brachycephalic dog, they will also snort and snore. Because they are a barrel-chested breed, they are also at a higher risk for bloat in dogs. This can become dangerous, especially if the stomach flips, so you want to make sure you reduce the risk when you can and know the symptoms so you can get help as soon as possible. Since reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing issues on to puppies, they should be able to answer your questions. Despite their high energy, Boxers are highly trainable dogs that can be a good fit for owners of any experience level. Because they are intelligent, they pick up on things quickly and can get bored easily. But, they are eager to please their owners and tend to respond well to training. The other parent breed could make a Boxer Mix even easier to train or more difficult to train. You want to make sure you ask the breeder about the other parent breed so you know what range of trainability to expect. A Boxer Mix can end up with a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a combination of both of them. Monthly nail trims are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Ears should be dry, clean, and free of debris or pests. Unfortunately, many dog owners overlook dental care, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed. Daily walks plus playtime and other activities should be enough for this dog. However, they will likely be up for more activity if you are. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog breed, then you can expect a Boxer Mix to also be a high-energy dog. However, this is a potential range, so you will still need to be prepared to deal with a Boxer Mix that is high-energy. A Boxer usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can affect this, especially if they are the mother, so you do want to ask about them. A Boxer generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you can likely expect a similar life span in a Boxer Mix. Featured Boxer Mix Article.

He has been with his foster since June .He is heartworm negative and up to date with his vetting, including neuter. Moe gets along great with dogs. Although Moe has not been tested with children. We have no reason to believe that he would be a problem with them. We are not sure about cats. She was an owner surrender because she was not very nice to the feral kitties in the neighborhood. We will not place her in a home with cats. Nova is great with dogs and children. She is a lovely girl in the home, content to lay at your feet as you work or relax. Adult, Female, Large Pepper Pepper cam into our rescue with her sister and mom, life has not be kind to her. Pepper and her family were part of a neglect case in Oklahoma. Pepper is a very sweet girl, but she will need lots of love to get her confidence back up! Pepper does not mind cats and has been around kids. Pepper is approximately 2 years old and is potty trained. Because she is so shy and timid, she is still working on leash training. We would like Goldy and Pepper to stay together! Do they sound like they could be a part of your family?! A friends daughter fostered her and found her to be sweet. However, it didnt work with her other pets, so she took her back. Princess had a hard time at the shelter with a few incidents. I agreed to take her, and my friends daughter pulled her on the day she was to be euthanized. I picked her up in early April. At the time, she had heartworm. Treatment was completed. Shes probably due for a check on it now. The Dallas shelter had her as 13, but everyone here thinks shes younger. Maybe .When she was surrendered, she was in heat. They spayed her at the shelter. Since Ive had her, shes been sweet to others other than the growls at repairmen. She likes to lick people. Now the special issues she has. Princess has separation anxiety. Shes gone from Prozac when I picked her up to trazadone. The trazadone helps a lot. Acepromazine was too strong, but the boarding place I use sometimes gives her half doses if needed. I can now leave her for several hours without anything happening to the house. She became smart to my tricks to get her into the crate at night, so I leave her out now. She really doesnt get along with other animals. I was told that when I got her, so Ive left my four cats in bedrooms since she arrived. Thats a huge reason why Id like to find her a forever home. Im not skilled with dogs though, so maybe someone could help her overcome that problem. I understand that she was surrendered with another dog. I also go out of town a lot, so I end up boarding her. She is kept away from direct contact with other dogs. Its been mentioned that she has made a lot of progress since she started there. Shes less reactive when other dogs go by her pen. I think the best scenario for her would be with someone who is home a lot and has no other pets. She definitely loves her humans. The sweetest most gorgeous GSD mix who cant wait to find her new home! Rachel has had a rough start to life but that doesnt stop her one bit! Rachel has love for everyone and everything she does. We think she is about 2 years old but in those 2 years she was likely never inside. So know if you would like Rachel as part of your family that she will need training. She doesnt understand how house life works, whats acceptable and whats not. As her fosters we have taught her a few basics but with just a few short weeks with her she will need lots of attention in her new home. Shes a master counter surfer. She does great with the 2 young kids in her foster home ages 4yrs and 18months and also with the other 2 German Shepherds in the home male and female. We do not know how she does with cats or small dogs. I believe Rachel would benefit from having another dog in the house who loves to play as much as she does! She is so playful and full of energy she could go for hours! She is very much a Velcro dog, she will follow you step for step everywhere you go. This gorgeous girl is ready to share her sweet, smart and sensitive self with her forever family! Adult, Female, Large. Any puppies that qualify as a German Shepherd Mix are a cross between a German Shepherd and another dog breed. In a mixed breed, you can get any mix of characteristics in the parent breeds. German Shepherds tend to be strong-willed, intelligent, playful, and loyal. To get a full idea of what to expect in your puppy, be sure to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the cross and check out the mother dog in-person to get a general idea about size and temperament. On the German Shepherd side, you have an independent dog with high intelligence and a playful spirit. German Shepherds make great family pets and are born protectors. Because of their protective instinct, they can be suspicious of strangers. Socialization early and often can help curb this suspicion and make them more open to new people and situations. German Shepherds also tend to be loving and have a lively personality. The German Shepherd Mix can have any or all of these characteristics plus any characteristics from the other parent breed in the mix. Before buying a German Shepherd Mix puppy and bringing them home, be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. If the puppies are being family-raised around children, you should be able to get an idea of how they will do in a family setting that includes children. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. With a German Shepherd Mix, you could get a moderately adaptable dog that is just like a purebred German Shepherd. You could also end up with a dog that is more like the other parent breed. Talking with the breeder about the other parent breed can give you a good idea of what to expect. German Shepherds can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. You will need to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an idea of any other health concerns to be aware of in your German Shepherd Mix. Health screenings, clearances, and the genetic history of the parents can help allay concerns about potential health conditions. On the German Shepherd side, training and obedience classes are highly recommended for novice dog owners. Although GSDs are highly intelligent, pick up on things quickly, and train fairly easily, they can be stubborn with an independent streak. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. You will still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an understanding of what to expect during the training process. Professional grooming a few times a year and the occasional bath is also recommended. Regardless of the coat type, your German Shepherd Mix will need to have their nails trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly. Not every dog will allow you to do this, so try to get a tooth brushing session in at least a few times a week to reduce tartar buildup. This will help prevent dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, it will help cut down on bad breath! German Shepherds tend to have a high activity level. They were bred to run, herd, guard, and protect, so they are used to working and having a job to do. They are definitely not a lazy dog breed! Be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. You will still want to go in prepared for a high energy dog with the understanding that your German Shepherd Mix puppy may have an activity level closer to the other breed in the cross. If both are high energy dogs breeds, expect to end up with a high energy dog. A German Shepherd is a large dog breed that generally weighs between 55 and 90 pounds. They also usually stand between 22 and 26 inches tall at the shoulders. The other dog breed in the cross could result in a smaller or larger German Shepherd Mix. A German Shepherd generally lives for years. You should be able to expect a similar range in your German Shepherd Mix, but the other dog breed in the cross could affect this range. Featured German Shepherd Mix Article. I've had kind of a rough start and it takes me a little bit of time and patience before I know you're my people. You see, I used to have a family, but I lived in the backyard and one day they moved away and didn't even pack me up! I spent six weeks roaming the streets in the peak of Texas summer, a nice couple fed me burgers but I was wary of people and didn't really want anybody approaching me. The friendly rescue people down the street spent time every day checking on me and talking to me until I finally let them put a leash on me. I am a grumbly husky with a lot to say and it took me a couple weeks before I would let foster mom pet me without grumbling at her. I am very vocal and I don't love new people in my space, but I always let them know. I also don't like to be grabbed, pushed, lifted, or pulled by strangers. My foster mama is bestest friend in the world though and I love to sit in her lap and lean up on her legs when I see her I call these Odin hugs. She can even restrain me or pick me up if she wants, I know that she would never ever hurt me. I've been making lots of friends you see, and I'm always so excited to see them! I have a foster auntie and I love her so much when she comes over I'm sure to give her lots of Odin hugs. Slowly, I'm learning that there are more good people than bad people and I'm learning to let my walls down faster and faster. I'm turning into a regular social butterfly, I just need some time getting to know my new friends before I let them into my heart. The coolest thing about being a rescue dog is being a big foster brother to all the other fosters! I get to show them the ropes, my foster mama finds lots of dogs outside. The resident dogs in this house might not remember their previous lives, but I sure do! I'm a great big foster brother and most of the new fosters really look to me for reassurance. I like to play a little rough and it's hard to find friends who will play at my level. I love to grumble and play growl and sometimes the other dogs get confused by my body language. I've watched a couple of my foster siblings get adopted and go to their furever homes, and I'm still waiting for my turn! My foster mama says she would just keep me but she's hopeful that I'll find my very own people who can share their whole world with me!! Odin is a wonderful dog who needs a little patience before he lets his true temperament shine. He is extremely loyal but would thrive in a home with experienced dog owners as he doesn't like to be grabbed, lifted, or pushed, and responds best to positive and upbeat energy. He's eager to please and with a little patience has learned to go into the crate where he does an excellent job being quiet and settling down and into the car. He has a lot of energy and would love an active family to take him hiking, walking, or jogging. Odin is a good weight at 75 pounds,is done with HW treatment, and is about 3 years old. If you bring the patience, respect, and treats, Odin will bring the unwavering love and loyalty! Questions about German Shepherd puppies for sale in Iowa? We have answers. Thus, it will do good for both you and your pet. First, however, you must pick your future pet to adopt from a good rescue. Rescue should have active and preventative programs to reduce animal killing. The Rescue or Shelter must have an aggressive public education about overpopulation. Further, they should exert efforts to apply differential licensing. Thus, a good rescue should comply by neutering all animals before going to their new homes. All these should always direct towards the well-being of the animals. A clean and comfortable place means the animals are also well-cared. Further, it echoes a skilled, compassionate, and good hygiene and healthcare program. How do I pick a good rescue Golden Retriever? Thus, you may want to do the following in choosing a good Golden Retriever. Observe the dog Most shelters have an observation room for you to do this. If it has none, just do your best to find some quiet place. As soon as the dog gets comfortable, you may start observing. The Golden Retriever should be friendly. It should come at you with no hesitation, sniff you, or even jump for attention. If you see it exhibits exciting behavior, like tail wagging, it means it wants you to pet him. Thus, you need to give it different tones and noise, especially with your voice. Touch the dog with caution Shelter or rescue dogs are usually under stress. Thus, you always need to be cautious when touching it. You may also see how it reacts when you touch it. A Golden Retriever likes getting touched or petted. Thus, if you cautiously touch it and begs for more, it can be a good sign for you. Other things you can note would be tail-wagging and endless sniffing and licking. Play with the dog Since Golden Retrievers are playful by nature, you should also play with the dog. Moreover, you need to take note of how well it interacts as it plays. Golden Retrievers are born to play. Thus, it should get excited upon seeing a ball or any other toys. At other times, excitement means circling and moving enthusiastically. Walk with the dog Golden Retrievers like to walk, so you may want to test that out as well. Observe how it reacts when on a leash or when it sees other dogs, people, or anything on the road. A good Golden Retriever does well with walking. So anything it sees around, like cars, bikes, or even other people and animals, would draw its attention. Let the dog interact with other dogs or animals. It may or may not be possible, but you may ask to observe how the dog interacts with other animals. It will also be necessary if you have other pets at home. Golden Retrievers play and interact well with other pets. Thus, if you have a pet at home, it would be great to take it to the shelter and allow it to play with the dog. Summary Live and appreciate your adopted Golden Retriever dog in Maryland. It will cover the entire cost of caring for the Golden Retriever in Maryland. If you wish to adopt one, look for a kind and trustworthy Golden Retriever. Unfortunately, dogs who have been rescued are often mistreated, abused, and abandoned. Other States. Share 0 Shares Once you have decided that a Golden Retriever is the right fit for you and your family, the next step is deciding the where and how of adopting. The search can be daunting. Do you purchase from a breeder or do you look for a rescue? There are only two Golden Retriever rescues in Maryland, however, there are several in nearby states. Goldheart concentrates its rescue efforts in Maryland, Delaware, and south-central Pennsylvania. Its mission is to provide Goldens with temporary foster homes where they can receive food, grooming, medical treatment, training, and love. The goal is to move each Golden to a loving forever home. Goldheart encourages and promotes responsible pet ownership and gentleness towards Golden Retrievers. Some Goldens are from local shelters. Goldens can be surrendered for many reasons including, the owner being unable to financially care for the dog, elderly owners no longer being able to physically care for the Golden, new babies, or the owners being unable to pay for necessary medical treatment. Behavioral problems are rarely an issue when it comes to rescue. Each dog spends a minimum of two weeks in a foster home experienced in dealing with dogs. While in foster care their behavior and personality are observed. Since Goldheart has successfully placed over Golden Retrievers in homes. They take in between Golden Retrievers and Golden mixes per year and approve new applications. An application with Goldheart is good for two years once approved, provided there are no major changes in your home. Why should I adopt a dog from a Golden Retriever rescue? There are a number of reasons to adopt a rescued Golden. You can adopt a dog that is crate trained, has been spayed or neutered, has had a micro-chip locator implanted and registered, is through many of the puppy issues — chewing, house trained knows to do their business outside. You will be giving a wonderful, loving Golden Retriever home. Where does GoldHeart get their dogs? The dogs that come into GoldHeart come from many different sources. The majority of dogs that come to rescue are surrendered by their current owners. A few of the dogs come from the local shelters. The local shelters call rescue when a dog has run out of time to be adopted, or the dog has some special need that makes it difficult to get it adopted. There are many reasons people give for surrendering their dog. The top reasons we hear are: Not enough time for the dog. New baby — the dog is too much work. Unable or unwilling to pay for medical treatment. Too much for the owner to handle — usually a young dog that they have not taken the time to train. Rarely are behavioral problems an issue with a dog that comes into rescue. If a behavioral problem is encountered, we try to deal with them before the dog is adopted. Our dogs usually spend a minimum of two weeks in an experienced foster home, where their personality and behavior are observed and evaluated. Is an Older Dog Trainable? Dogs never lose their ability to learn. In many cases, the older dogs learn more quickly than the ones still in the puppy stages because they are better able to focus. There is little difference in the temperament of male and female Goldens. Both sexes are equally easy to house train, equally intelligent and affectionate. Both are excellent with children, and both make excellent companions. Some males are inclined to mark their territory, but this can also be exhibited by dominant females. On average, the younger males tend to be more active than their female counterparts, but there are some very active females. How are Golden Retrievers with Children? Golden Retrievers are wonderful family dogs, however any dog owner needs to be aware of a few simple precautions. Most important, children need to be taught how to interact with the dog. Smaller children should always be supervised when with the dog. There is always a potential for a bite if a child does something the dog finds painful. A dog should never be adopted or purchased for a child. It needs to be an obligation that is taken on by the whole family. The children can assist, but they are not the primary caregivers. Why Should a Dog Be Crated? A crate can be a place for the dog to escape for a quiet moment or a nap. The crate is a wonderful house training tool. Dogs will not normally do their business where they sleep unless they are desperate. This provides you the opportunity to manage house training if needed properly. The crate is a great dog management tool when you are introducing a new dog to other dogs in the household. How is Goldens with Other Pets? Golden Retrievers are typically very easygoing dogs that get along with other dogs very well. Cats can be a different story. Some Goldens have very high prey drives that will cause them to chase things that run. The same would be suggested for other small furry animals and birds in the home. Meet Augie — she is the oldest known Golden Retriever, pictured here celebrating her 20th Birthday! Augie was born April 24, , and after being re-homed twice due to no fault of her own , landed with Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt of Oakland, Tennessee. Jennifer and Steve, who were active in their local golden retriever rescue organization when they got Augie, adopted her when she was 14 years old. Augie reminds us that age is only a number and that there is nothing as special as Old Gold. Augie left her loving family on March 23, , at 20 years and 11 months old. Jennifer told GoldHeart…. One thing I know: Love and care for them while we have them and love them forever. Yes, this is an anomaly, but with better diets, exercise, and regular veterinary care, goldens are routinely living from 12 to 14 years of age and many well beyond that. One recent GoldHeart rescue , Teddy, passed his 17th birthday after coming into GoldHeart at age .Which Diseases are Golden Retrievers Susceptible to? Dogs are susceptible to many of the disease that humans contract. The health issues which most commonly afflict Goldens are: Cancer occurs more often in Goldens than it does in the normal canine population. As with people, the majority of cancers in canines are treatable. The majority of Goldens that do succumb to cancer do so in their later years, after 10 years of age. Canine hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia can occur, but not any more often than it occurs in other large breed dogs. They are known to have several eye problems, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Uveitis, and Cataracts, but these conditions are less commonly encountered. Allergies and skin and ear problems are routine but easily treatable. Hypothyroidism can occur usually later in life , but it is something that is easily and inexpensively treated. Do Goldens Shed? Goldens are big shedders since they have double coats. Brushing often will help you keep shedding under control. They need their double coat to protect them year-round. It keeps them cool in the summer and protects them from the sun, bugs and other issues. Try to keep the hair around the feet and pads trimmed up and trim nails on a regular basis. With this double coated breed, regular baths and proper drying also sets the foundation to maintaining healthy skin and coat, so your golden will benefit from routine professional grooming. This is entirely dependent on the dog. Some dogs have very high energy levels, and they require several hours of exercise a day. Others are very laid back and get by with just walks. If your lifestyle does not allow time for exercise, opt for a calmer, easy-going dog. Because of indiscriminate breeding, we see Golden Retrievers that are much larger and weigh in excess of lbs. Where Should I Buy a Puppy? The places you can purchase a puppy from are many, but you would be wise to get a puppy from a responsible breeder. Contact a local Golden Retriever Club in your area and ask for recommendations. Another source is the Golden Retriever Club of America. There is not a responsible breeder that would ever consider selling puppies to a pet store. The advertisements in the papers are placed there by puppy mills and backyard breeders. The puppy mill breeder should be avoided at all costs. The backyard breeders are probably your best bet if you are not going to go to a responsible breeder. If the seller refuses you any of this information, walk away. A puppy should never be separated from the litter until it is at least 8 weeks of age. Responsible breeders never have more than one litter a year from a female. They do not breed a female until it is at least 2 years of age. They know the lineage of their dogs for many generations. They never breed dogs that have any medical issues that could be passed on to the puppies. They have the puppies extensively checked over by their veterinarian and provide general health certifications. They provide a healthy, rich environment for the puppies until they go to their new homes. They will always take one of their dogs back if it needs to be surrendered by the owner. They screen the new owners and the puppies for a temperament match. In spite of the price they charge, they are not in it for the money. They do it for the love of the breed and the desire to perpetuate the breed as it should be. Golden Retrievers are the second most popular AKC breed. The only breed more popular is the Labrador Retriever. Well-bred Golden Retriever litters are in high demand. The responsible breeders will have a waiting list for their puppies, but most will be happy to talk with you about any upcoming litters. Working should not prohibit you from raising a puppy. However, a puppy does demand extra time and attention, and you will need to make provisions to care for your puppy. Caring for a puppy brings responsibilities and obligations that need to be considered. A puppy turns into a dog, and a Golden will eventually grow to be between lbs. Puppies generally defecate 5 to 6 times a day and urinate even more. You will need to get up during the night to take your puppy out. For example, a 4-month-old puppy will need to go out every 5 hours. House-training a puppy, can take at least 6 months. With a daily time commitment of every hours. A puppy will benefit from a socialization class at around weeks old and an obedience class after 6 months. Even people who adopt older rescue dogs can benefit from a class to help them teach the dog what is expected of him. Puppies require a minimum of three minute low-impact aerobic play sessions per day, and older dogs need regular exercise on a daily basis. A tired puppy is a calm puppy. If the time constraints of raising a puppy seem too much, an older rescue dog may better fit your needs. Should I Adopt A Senior? I am about 2 years old and I love follow my foster mum around. She tells me I am her shadow. My foster potty trained me in a day and she said I am very very smart and I have to agree with that. I also learned new commands like sit, down, and off. We are working on the stay but I have a hard time sitting still because I have lots to keep an eye on inside. She walks me always on her right side and I became very well behaved in our leash walking training. I do like to be right by my foster brother Logan, so sometimes I will pull to be with him. I have an another foster brother and he is smaller and furry and he meows for food all the time when he is not sleeping. I love him and he give me sand kisses. We went to a coffee shop other day and all these people want to pet me and take pics of me. I felt like a movie star! On the walks I get overly excited when I see other dogs and I am very vocal about it. Sometimes the dogs get scared of me, but I assure you, I am awesome and not aggressive at all. I just want to say hi to ALL the dogs! But I warm up to everyone very quickly. I am getting a lot of love and attention right now and it will be ideal for me to not be left alone for too long. He is the size of a Labrador Retriever. He was at the shelter where he came in as a stray. They treated him there for an ear infection and some mild skin inflammation which he has long recovered from. We did notice cloudiness in both eyes and were diagnosed with cataracts. Surgery was done to remove them and has recovered well but will need 2 different eye drops for life. He can be very playful with other playful dogs and loves to play fetch, or, can cuddle up next to you just as well. Walks are his favorite activity. He is also good with calm, friendly smaller dogs. He has not been around cats. With children, he does better with 12 years and older. Leon becomes attached to his human and will follow them like a shadow. He can be a little stubborn and will growl and snap at times when disciplined or if bumped while sleeping. He has been adopted twice and returned for this reason. Once he is comfortable in his new home, he will do it less. He may have separation anxiety at 1st, but with time and patience, he gets over it. He does better with a furry companion. He just needs someone to give him a chance. We believe he would do good in a house with a big yard, another playful dog, or an experienced, active family. Is the Boston Terrier and Pug mix the right dog for you? What is a Boston Terrier and Pug mix? But this hybrid also inherited negative traits such as its tendency to be stubborn and territorial. It does not like being left alone or separated from its family. We will be talking more about these traits later in the article. Buggs are affectionate. Buggs have short, small legs, and a short tail. But, good thing for this hybrid, its parent breeds have some similar facial features. Some endearing facial features the Bugg inherited from both parent breeds are their expressive round, bulging eyes and short flat muzzles. Common coat colors for the Boston Terrier Pug mix include shades of black, white, brindle, and fawn. Once-a-week brushing should suffice in keeping their coats looking healthy. Although its coat is non-hypoallergenic, the Boston Terrier Pug mix sheds moderately. This crossbreed may still be ideal for pet owners who have mild allergies. Your Bugg is energetic and loves playtime, but these dogs do not require much exercise. Taking them on a short minute walk or a brisk walk around the block daily is enough to keep this pup happy and healthy. Just like any dog, Boston Terrier Pug mixes need to have their teeth brushed everyday to ensure they maintain excellent dental health. Their ears need to be checked and cleaned at least once a week to avoid infection. While a Boston Terrier and Pug cross may not require too much exercise, it is not comfortable being left alone for too long. Your presence in its day-to-day life is a must for this breed. Boston Terrier Pug Mix Health Problems They are prone to some health conditions that are common in their parent breeds as listed below. Obesity — it is a known fact in the doggie world that a Pug has the tendency to overeat. The Bug dog may inherit that from its parent. Brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome BAOS — This condition causes a dog with a short nose to have difficulties in breathing. You might find your Boston Terrier-Pug hybrid trying to catch its breath when they run or during any rigorous play. Snoring is also a symptom of this issue. Dermatitis — This is a skin condition that Boston Terrier-Pug crosses may inherit due to the folds on their faces and their twisted tail. You should take them to the vet if you see signs of skin irritation. Clicker training works well for them. A lot of positive praise and treats during your training sessions will be appreciated by this breed. While a Boston Terrier Pug mix might inherit positive traits from its parent breeds, it can also inherit negative tendencies that can become serious behavioral issues if not addressed early on. Here are some negative traits a Bugg can inherit from its parents, along with some tips on what you can do about these: Stubbornness — Sometimes a Pug and Boston Terrier mix just chooses not to do what you say. Obedience training while the Bugg is still a puppy can help fix this. Jealousy and territorial behavior — Early socialization with humans and other pets at home is the key to keeping a Bug dog from being territorial. Make sure to leave your dog with some toys and treats to distract it from your absence. This all sounds great! Where can I get a Boston Terrier Pug mix? You may also opt for Bugg pups who are for adoption from shelters and rescue organizations. It may be challenging to find breeders of Boston Terrier and Pug mix puppies, but you can check breeders of its parent breeds:. The designer dogs are comical at times but are genuinely affectionate, solely consecrated to their owners. They would love spending maximum time with their masters, sleeping with them or cuddling on their laps. They also have an equally tender feeling towards children, satisfying their playful instincts by spending fun moments with them. Some Buggs might inherit the territorial instinct of the Boston, thus making it difficult for them to get along with other pets. Care Exercise Your Bugg is full of energy and a strong willingness to play. Schedule for short, brisk walks, swimming which they enjoy , or mild activities once or twice a day. Indulge it in playing without a leash, making sure, its playground has a secure enclosure. Grooming The Buggs have a short coat and do not shed much. No trimming or stripping is needed. But do brush them at least once a week. Keep their facial skin folds clean to avoid allergies. Also take care that their protruding eyes do not catch debris and cause vision problems. Training Dealing with stubbornness in a Bugg is not difficult. All you have to do is give it the right signal. For instance, when you are taking your dog out of the front gate for an evening walk, keep your clicker and treats ready. Hold the leash and wait for it to look back at you, without addressing it. Once it does, click and give it the goodie. Follow a few more steps, stop again — let it look at you, and it gets one more clicking treat. Keep clicking and treating it, as and when you see the leash becomes tight. Your Bugg will get the message that looking at you before contriving to stubborn would help it get it treats. Right from puppyhood, teach your Bugg not to lose temper in situations related to territoriality, especially if you get the slightest hint. Train your puppy not to run boundaries when you keep them outside. Rather, treat your dog every time it accepts your approaching guests or other pets, and stay relaxed. If you are also a cat or bird lover, give your puppy socialization training to help with grow with fellow pets in a hassle free manner. Take extra care that this does not happen, or else it might end in obesity issues. Keep it limited to 0. He is my baby, He has to be in sight of me or on my lap, laying on me or next to me at all times. I could not ask for a better boy, most of the time. I know better. Besides this gross habit however I have never had a pet like him. And will rgun over and chase him away from the food dish if he believes he has had more than his share. Which sometimes can be 1 mouthful of food. But all in all he gets along with him. They are best buds and are always close to one another. He has an underbite, many fatty tumors on him and has mid stage cataracts as well as heart issues. I know he is getting to the end but as my vet says his quality of life is still extremely well considering his age. He likes to go for rides, loves attention but is very protective of me when people are visiting only barks at them nothing more if they move he is very funny about when he gets into the garbage. By then I already know. He now helps me pick it up. But cuddles always make it better. My point is regardless of his quirks I love him so much and am so grateful he is part of my family. He speaks with his eyes and expressions, loves ear rubs and massages. Nope he is not spoiled at all! My only regret is that I wish I would have been able to have him from puppyhood. JackPug Description The Jug is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Jack Russell Terrier and the Pug. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of thecharacteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. She takes after the JRT and is very high energy and very intelligent. Jugs should have access to a fenced yard as they love to run and dig. They will chase squirrels , rabbits, etc. He has lots of curiosity and play drive, but is equally interested in lap time with Mommy. He also enjoys time with our other mixed breed dog Terra whose mother was a purebred Golden Retriever and we believe a black Lab father. In Ollie's case, he requires a lamb and rice dog food, and I must ensure no one gives him anything with pork in it. I love watching Cesar Millan's the Dog Whisperer and have taken lots of tips from the show in regards to being the pack leader. I was a dog trainer with the local county 4-H program and have been around all types of breeds for many years; Cesar's principals are phenomenal. Ollie can have an attitude when he does not get what he wants when he wants it, so I really do have to use the firm assertive-dominant role with him. He has a super high drive to watch for squirrels and chipmunks and will bark very aggressively toward them. I sometimes let him outside on the enclosed deck to chase them away, HA HA. He thinks it's great. I also developed a toy that he really has a drive to play with; it is a hard plastic ball, large enough not to get stuck in his jaws which can really be strong and it has two metal ball bearings inside it. I let him chase it all over the 1st floor of our home. I just close off sections with lots of places for it to get stuck. I also have the main play area pretty well ball proofed. If it gets stuck somewhere he will usually come and get me but you have to keep an eye or an ear out for him since he takes out his frustration on anything nearby. This includes extension cords, patio door blinds or the ottoman. Having consistency on the rules of good behavior during playtime keeps the house from being taken over by this little character. So overall, this breed is a joy to have around. He is my constant companion, loves attention from anyone and of course thinks he's the best. I really fell in love with his looks on first sight but his personality has truly taken my heart. She can do that and she can stand and spin in a circle. She loves kids and other animals; she has never hurt a fly. She loves everyone. Her name is Zoey. She was the only white Jug out of the litter. We love her very much. Bugs is four months old. His mom is a Jack Russell Terrier and his dad is a Pug. My husband bought Bugs for me as a Christmas present. Bugs is wonderful and smart, however he demands a lot of attention and exercise. When we are not working we walk Bugs a couple of miles a day. When working, we take him with us and walk him every time we are on a break. He wasn't too difficult to housebreak.I took him to the vet yesterday for his final puppy series and first rabies. He may be a small dog, but he has a big dog attitude. He fears nothing. Bugs is so very sweet. He is very affectionate, but enjoys roughhousing as well. He sometimes bites when playing and we are working on that. He does not like to be told "No. When you tell him No, he looks at you quizzically and then barks at you to express his annoyance. I love him and he is awesome. He loves going through drive-throughs at restaurants where people will tell him how adorable he is. Although, he is very hyper Jack Russell. I got Nugly when he was 3 months old from a pet store. It only took me 2 weeks to have him housebroken and 3 weeks to have him sitting, lying down on command and giving me paw. He is very intelligent. She can be quite greedy and has the tenacity of a Jack Russell Terrier. She loves to play and has been complimented on how placid she is around people. She has been a great delight to have in our home. Tootie is extremely intelligent and energetic. It was love at first sight with her and my son 4 years old. Everywhere we take her we are literally stopped by people off the street because she is just sooo CUTE. At times she can be sneaky and tries to get away with things she should not be doing. She fits in well with my kids. We love Tootie very much! If you have misfortune finding a trustworthy breeder for this hybrid, you can either ask a local veterinarian if they have anyone which they can refer to you or ask breeders of both parent breeds, instead: Our Brindle Bostons OK Weywood Showdogs PA Celestial Pugs CA A legitimate breeder should let you have a visit to their facility or kennels to meet the puppy before finalizing the purchase. This way, you can observe the living conditions of their animals. A visitation would also help make certain that your puppy is a good match for you. It is naturally glossy and can repel most of the dirt or water. You would only need to brush them once or twice every week to make sure that their shedding is kept to a minimum. Brushing using a slicker brush or comb will also help in maintaining the fur healthy and free of dirt or loose hair. This mixed breed does not have a doggy odor, so you can reduce their regular bathing to once a month or only when it is needed. Aside from that, you will also need to clip their nails every few weeks mainly because they will not break off naturally as they mostly stay indoors. You should also regularly clean their ears and check their eyes for any signs of infection. Boston Terrier Mixed with Pug Health Problems Pug Boston Terriers are known to live a long healthy life of 10 to 15 years, with proper care and a healthy diet. Like any other breed, they can also be prone to some health issues that are quite common in their parent breeds. It is important to remember to be cautious as their round bulging eyes are susceptible to injuries and debris could easily get in them. Obesity — Like their Pug parent, these dogs are also voracious eaters. The problem is, they are prone to obesity which can have adverse effects on their health and may even shorten their lifespan. It is very common in old age as their physical activities decrease or become lethargic. Owners should pay close attention to their diet as well as limit the number of treats. Fold Dermatitis — This occurs due to the moisture and heat that builds up in the folds of their skin. These areas become a breeding ground for fungi, yeast, and bacteria. It is much common during summer or hot weather. Brachycephalic Respiratory Syndrome — Also known as congenital obstructive airway disease, it is a common condition among flat-faced dogs. They can suffer from abnormalities like narrowed nostrils, an enlarged tongue, elongated soft palate, Hypoplastic Trachea, and Everted Laryngeal Saccules. Watch out for symptoms like snoring or if they often seem to try to catch their breath. These upper respiratory obstructions cause the dog to work harder to get some air through their airways resulting in distress, over-heating, and exacerbate obstructions. Abnormal Eyelid — This is a genetic condition where the eyelid folds inward. It causes the eyelash or hair to scratch and irritates the eye, which can lead to corneal perforation or ulceration. It is non-preventable and can only be corrected through surgery, especially in severe cases. They love to eat, and they would keep eating as much as they can. The first step in preventing this malicious disease is staying away from the worst dry dog food and limit their food intake to 0. Their diet should consist of high-quality dry dog food with a formula that is best suited for small dog breeds like themselves. The Boston Terrier combined with Pug will thrive on one of these best dry dog food for small dogs. These carefully mixed ingredients support the health of the skin and coat while providing the dog with enough energy for the day. From an early age, you should give your furry pal only food that is age-appropriate. For whelps, this means best puppy food brands are the way to go. Wise, old doggos, on the other hand, need the combination of nutrients found in the best senior dry dog food to help maintain their health throughout the senior age. Dietary supplements such as Nutra Thrive dog food supplement can contribute to replenishing essential foodstuffs in the body and promoting the health of coat, skin, or teeth, as well as heart, brain, and other vital organs. Boston Terrier Pugs Exercise Requirements The Pug Boston Terrier mix is not the most energetic breed, but it is still very important to keep them active and healthy. Keeping your dog in good shape helps with their health and temperament. Give them at least a total of 40 minutes of activities daily. If you have yard space, you can teach them how to play fetch or let them play on their own with interactive toys. They have a few sizes available, but small would suit them best. You can choose from either chicken, bacon, or peanut butter flavors which also helps in keeping them interested. Zogoflex Tux is another toy that doubles as a fetch toy and a chew toy. You can stuff it with treats and kibbles. It will surely keep them engaged for long periods, perfect when you have to leave your dog alone. It comes in a dinosaur, hedgehog, or lion. It has multiple layers to make sure they are soft, durable, and non-toxic. It can withstand daily chewing and is very easy to carry. Pug Boston Terriers Training Dogs of this mixed breed are smart and very eager to please, which makes them fairly easy to train. They respond well to praises and treats. It is important to start them on their training at an early age to help instill discipline and discourage their negative tendencies. The Boston Terrier mixed with Pug may inherit some traits that can become behavioral issues if not addressed early on. You have to be firm, but remember that these are very sensitive dogs, so you also need to be careful not to hurt their feelings. Using gentle corrections and offering incentives seems to be the best way to train this pup. Here are a few other tips for effective training: How to Deal with Stubbornness — All you will need is a clicker, a few treats, and their leash. Best time to do this is before you take them on a walk. Before leaving the house, take time to hold the leash and wait for your dog to look back at you without calling their attention. Once they do, just click and hand them a treat. Take a few steps forward, stop, and repeat. This method sends a message to your dog that by looking at you, they would get a treat. It is a great stepping stone to teaching them other tricks in the future. Keep in mind that you have to remain patient, consistent, and committed in their training. Teaching Your Dog to Stay Calm — These dogs can quickly lose their temper when they feel territorial — socializing them while still young helps them get used to the presence of strangers including other animals. You also can train your dog to stay calm and relaxed around other people or pets by giving them treats when they do. They are known to be goofy dogs and gets into mischief quite often. Funny and affectionate, this crossbreed loves playing, receiving attention and cuddling with their owners. They are the perfect companion, family dog, and watchdog. These small dogs are amazingly gentle around children. Their size also makes them easy to manage for new pet owners. They would do well in an apartment. Like most other dogs, they inherit traits that are very common in their parent breeds. In this case, they can have few health and behavioral issues, which are easily remedied with proper care and training. Life Span Did You Know? A Bugg is a cross between a Boston Terrier and Pug. These dogs tend to be small and are known for their adorable faces and gentle, fun, and comedic personalities. As a designer breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are recognized by other notable dog organizations. Buggs are a great fit for single owners as well as families. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They tend to be sweet, affectionate, and love to cuddle. They also tend to have an upbeat, fun-loving, and sometimes clownish personality. If left untrained or not socialized properly, barking can become a nuisance behavior and they can also become territorial. Although they are very sensitive to heat, the Bugg is a highly adaptable dog. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes with yards. They also do well in most climates, aside from heat. But, they have a short coat, so they may need some winter dog products to stay warm in colder temperatures. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they are devoted to their families. Potential health conditions to be aware of in the Bugg breed include luxating patella , cataracts, deafness, hip dysplasia, and encephalitis. As a brachycephalic dog breed, they will be prone to breathing problems, allergies, and will be very sensitive to heat. Their protruding eyes can also become irritated in the cold and you need to be careful to keep them clear of debris. As a small dog breed, they are also more prone to developing dental disease. So, practicing good dental care for dogs is also important. Buggs are intelligent dogs that are eager to please even though they can be stubborn at times. This tends to make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Puppy training classes can still be a good idea as they strengthen the bond you have with your puppy and also offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. As a small dog breed, house training can be a challenge. But, with consistency, some house training tips , and a lot of patience, you can get through it. Bugg puppies are also quite curious and energetic. They also tend to be prone to jumping up and climbing over people and furniture. The Bugg has a short coat that will shed a little year-round and potentially a little more as the seasons change. Monthly nail trimming can be enough to keep nails from growing too long. Floppy ears are more prone to ear infections than ears that stick straight up all the time, but all ears need to be checked regularly. Many dog owners overlook dental care, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. But, gum disease in dogs is serious and can lead to many other health issues. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is ideal and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. The Bugg tends to have a moderate activity level. Daily walks plus some playtime or other activity are usually enough for this dog. Although they may have bursts of energy, they are small dogs and can wear themselves out quickly. They love being around you, so they will likely be up for more activity if you are. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they are not overdoing it. As a brachycephalic dog, they are more sensitive to heat and can easily become overheated. But, there are safe ways to exercise brachycephalic dogs to help your Bugg get the movement they need to stay healthy. A fully-grown Bugg usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. A Bugg generally lives for years. Bugg Puppies for Sale Thanks for visiting our Bugg page! Boxer pups can be fed appropriate food from Farmina, Taste of the Wild or Acana. Pups who are younger than 3. Looking for the best dog food for Boxers? Try Farmina. Introduce your Boxer to new food gradually over a week and not all at once. Snacks, Chews, and Training Treats for Boxers Overview Just as much thought should go into what you offer your Boxer puppy for snacks and training treats as it does for their main meals since these tidbits can have the same detrimental ingredients as dog foods. And, snacks and treats as meant to serve different purposes; read on to get the most out of both of these. Snacks vs Chews vs Training Treats Snacks These are meant to be given in between meals to tide over a dog's appetite. One or two given at night before bedtime can keep Boxer satiated until morning. Snacks also help prevent rapid ingestion of meals due to being overly hungry. And, if the right ones are given, these can help prevent upset stomach from having the stomach too empty or queasiness that is linked to motion sickness. Snacks for Boxer puppies and dogs should be hard and dry. These may be labeled as cookies or biscuits and if you simply see the word 'treats' or 'bites', look for the words crunchy, dry, or baked. Chews Chews are a bit like snacks in the fact that they are given in between meals. However, different from a crunchy tidbit that a Boxer can chow down in under a minute, chews are meant to be, well, chewed. This aspect can make them good for a dog's teeth since the long and drawn-out chewing process can help to loosen plaque. Fortunately, there are some excellent alternatives more ahead. Training Treats These serve an entirely different purpose. As the name implies, these are used when training a dog to do something, and also are used to reinforce good behavior. So, these may be handed out when house training or command training or may be given out just to send the message of a job well done; for example, when your Boxer heels nicely besides you, behaves well around your neighbor, or had a successful play session with other dogs at the dog park. Because these may be doled out in succession or at many times during the day, these should be very small so that they do not interfere with a dog's appetite. Typically, training treats are tiny when compared to snacks and you may see these labeled as 'mini'. These should also pack a punch in regard to flavor so that they are seen as high value. For dogs, strong flavors like bacon, salmon, duck, lamb, and cheese are usually highly regarded, but sweet treats like those that have fruit can be greatly appreciated as well. Training treats should also be soft and chewy since this also contributes toward the 'high value' factor. This sort of treat may be labeled as 'rewards' and look for the words soft, soft-baked, chewy, or moist. Elements to Avoid You must navigate around snacks, chews, and treats for your Boxer dog just like you do when choosing a kibble for meals since you'll run into the same pitfalls: Chemical preservatives. These are responsible for a host of allergic reactions and are linked to both behavioral issues and health issues including some forms of cancer. Artificial coloring. Avoid Yellow 5 and 6, Blue 2, and Red 40 which are linked to a range of serious issues including neurological problems and allergies. Artificial flavor enhancers. MSG is one of the worst culprits and is linked to a wide range of symptoms including anxiety, rapid heartbeat, numb extremities, and asthma. Meat by-products. These are meats and tissues deemed unfit for human consumption and includes spinal tissue, spleens, hooves, tongues, brain, lungs, and more. High grain count - Though most Boxers should have some healthy grains in their diet, particularly low or no gluten options like rice, oatmeal, or quinoa, high levels of certain grains like wheat can cause all sorts of stomach issues including flatulence. Note that if your Boxer dog's main meals contain some grains, grain-free snacks are absolutely fine. The following factors are excellent to consider, all of which have gone into the recommended treats presented here today. Neverthless, it is these kinds of things that will help you when buying any food item, treat or otherwise, for your boxer going forward. Ingredients and Nutrition It goes without saying, but you should always emphasize high-quality natural ingredients. Many of the cheaper dog treats are mostly comprised of wheat, soy, or other cheap grains, all of which can be problematic for your boxer. So, stick to natural, high-protein, and high-quality options. Flavor, Smell, and Texture The flavor, smell, and texture of a treat will largely dictate whether your boxer likes or even chooses to eat them. All three of these can put a dog off, or alternatively, make them that much more effective. Now it logically makes sense that if you want your boxer to do something, or pick up a command, that they will be much more willing to do so if the reward is better, right? And while you may be able to cut a few corners here and there, you should never compromise on quality. Package Size Be careful when it comes to packaging and product sizing. Some dog-treat products can be deceiving; some are more packaging than they are treats! So look at the weight of the item before you go ahead and make a purchase and compare price, like for like. Treat Size Consider how old your boxer is and what treats will be most appropriate for them. Your boxer should eat treats in accordance with their age, health and appropriately alongside the rest of their diet. Equally, some treats may be able to be fed more than others, depending on the nutrition and their ingredients. Nonetheless, as the name suggests, treats should never be fed too regularly. They should be fed sparingly and for a specific reason — not just for the sake of it. Remember, boxers do best on a high-quality diet of balanced feed first and foremost. This should be high in protein and designed with all the vitamins and minerals your dog needs to support their phase of life. Treats can then serve as a supplementary and secondary role during specific contexts I will now outline below. When To Give Your Boxer Treats Boxers should only be given treats in response to good behavior, when calm, and firmly outside of designated meal times. First and foremost, it is essential that you never offer a treat during or at mealtime. You also want to ensure that you do not offer your boxer a treat while they are still running around, overly energetic, or acting busy. That will only reinforce that behavior, and you can end up facing issues with them being calm. Therefore, be sure to only offer your boxer a treat at the right time. Ensure they are calm — either sitting down, lying down or are waiting by your side. You may also want to offer your boxer a treat following the successful completion or response to a command. Finally Treating your boxer is one of the finer moments of ownership. However, that does not mean that you should offer any old treat or do so just for fun or just because they are crying. Treats serve a purpose, and they should also be of sufficient quality not to cause issues. Hopefully, my top picks and suggestions above will give you some food for thought no pun intended. Besides, they all met my stringent criteria. So, rest assured, your boxer will love them, and they will equally serve you and your boxer well. Related Boxer articles you may want to see:.
