Research: First and foremost, make sure that the breeder is reputable and has a good track record. There are many ways to research this, including reading online reviews and talking to other dog owners who have purchased Bernedoodles puppies from them. Health: Second, you want to make sure that the Bernedoodle puppies are healthy and well-cared for. Ask the breeder about the health of the parents and grandparents, and whether or not the puppies have been to the vet for a checkup. This means they should be introduced to a variety of people, and other animals, which will be beneficial for novice owners. Puppies from a reputable breeder are going to be more expensive than those from a backyard breeder. But, in the long run, a puppy from a reputable breeder is going to be healthier and have fewer behavior issues. Meet the Parents: If possible, you should meet the parents of the puppies before making your final decision. This will give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of temperament and appearance. But if you need more convincing, here are just a few reasons why a Bernedoodle might be the perfect pup for you. Coat: Bernedoodles come in three different coat types: wavy, curly, and straight. Temperament: Bernedoodles are known for their friendly, outgoing personalities. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them easy to train. They are also very loyal and affectionate with their families and get along well with children and other pets. Size: Bernedoodles come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Standard Bernedoodles can weigh anywhere from pounds, while Miniature Bernedoodles usually weigh in at pounds. Toy Bernedoodles are the smallest of the bunch, weighing in at 12 pounds or less. Health: Bernedoodles are generally a healthy breed, and are not known to suffer from any major health conditions. However, like all breeds, they can be susceptible to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia. But with proper care and regular vet check-ups, your Bernedoodle should enjoy a long and healthy life. This deficiency is why adding multivitamins to homemade feed once in a while is very beneficial to your pooch. The German Shepherd Mastiff Mix combines two highly intelligent, loyal, and protective breeds. The German Shepherd is known for its bravery and loyalty and is an excellent guard dog. The Mastiff is known for its gentle nature and the protectiveness of its family. The combination of these two breeds makes for a loyal and protective pet. They typically weigh between pounds and stand between inches tall. They have a double coat which can vary in color from black and tan to red, sable, and white. This breed is intelligent and energetic and requires much exercise and mental stimulation to keep them healthy and happy. They can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia and other health concerns, so a vet must check them regularly. The German Shepherd Mastiff Mix is a great family pet, loyal and protective of its family. They are not overly aggressive and can be trained to be obedient and well-behaved. They are also good with children. They make excellent guard dogs and will alert their family to intruders. These dogs are a great choice for dog lovers who want a large, loyal guard dog that is gentle and loving. The Shep-a-Mastiff is a powerful combination of both breeds and is known for its athleticism, agility, and strength. They are typically large dogs, with some reaching up to pounds or more. The Shep-a-Mastiff is a hybrid breed, so there is no guarantee of what the puppies will look like. They usually have the physical characteristics of both species, including a strong and muscular body, a large head and chest, and a long tail. They may also have the coloring of either parent breed. The temperament of a Shep-a-Mastiff will depend on their parent breeds and their upbringing. Generally, these dogs are loyal, loving, and protective. They make great family dogs and are great with children. However, they may be too large and powerful for some, and they can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. As with any large dog breed, a Shepherd Mastiff mix should be properly trained and socialized from a young age. A German Shepherd Mastiff Mix will typically get quite large. The dog's size will depend on the size of the parents and the genetics they pass on. These dogs generally range from 25 to 90 pounds and may reach heights up to 30 inches tall. Typically, they will have the longer coat of the German Shepherd, although the Mastiff parent's skin will also have an influence. Colors can range from tan, grey, and black to brown and red. These dogs are often used as guard dogs and herding due to their protective nature. They are loyal and affectionate and make great family pets, provided they are trained properly. As with any large breed dog, it is important to provide plenty of exercises and regular grooming to help maintain their coat and reduce loose fur. They may also be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, so regular check-ups are recommended. Finding a professional dog trainer to work with your dog is also important if you do not have experience with large-breed dogs. If you are looking for a purebred Mastiff, you may also want to look into a Mastiff-Shepherd cross with the same personality traits but a less dominant Mastiff parent. Finally, when looking for a dog sitter or daycare provider, ensure they are experienced with large-breed dogs. Physical Appearance and Size The German Shepherd Mastiff mix, a designer dog bred from the Tibetan Mastiff and the German Shepherd, is a large and striking breed that has captured the hearts of many dog lovers. This hybrid blends the parent breeds' physical traits, resulting in an impressive and powerful appearance. General appearance The Shepherd Mastiff mix inherits its muscular frame and sturdy build from the German Shepherd and Mastiff breeds. It typically features a strong, broad head with a square muzzle, large eyes, and ears that may be erect or drooping depending on the dominant genes. The tail is usually long and slightly curved, while the legs are strong and well-proportioned to support their large frame. Size and weight As a large dog, the Shepherd Mastiff mix can stand between 25 to 36 inches tall at the shoulder, with males being slightly larger than females. They typically weigh anywhere from 80 to pounds, depending on the size of the parent breeds and individual factors. Remember that this wide range makes it essential for potential dog owners to be prepared for a sizeable canine companion. Coat types and colors The coat of a Shepherd Mastiff mix can vary based on the genetic influence of the German Shepherd and the English Mastiff. The Mastiff Shepherd's coat is generally short to medium in length, dense, and may be straight or slightly wavy. While German Shepherds and Mastiffs can influence coat colors , common colors include black, tan, sable, brindle, and shades of red or fawn. The American Kennel Club doesn't officially recognize mixed dogs like the Shepherd Mastiff mix, so there is no standardization of coat colors. Temperament and Personality The German Shepherd Mastiff mix, often called a Mastiff Shepherd, is a large and impressive breed with a unique combination of temperament and personality traits inherited from its German Shepherd and Mastiff parents. General disposition The German Shepherd Mastiff mix, a hybrid dog with a unique blend of temperament and personality traits, is known for being a gentle giant. This large breed dog inherits the noble and protective nature of the Mastiff parent and the loyal and alert disposition of the standard German Shepherd. Intelligence and trainability The intelligence and trainability of the German Shepherd Mastiff mix stem from both the German Shepherd and Mastiff parent genes. This makes them highly trainable and eager to learn. Professional dog trainers find these dogs to be quick learners and responsive to commands using positive reinforcement. They excel in obedience and agility training, with their German Shepherd colors shining through as they showcase their skills. However, it's essential to be patient and consistent during training, as their Mastiff side can occasionally make them a bit stubborn. Socialization and bonding Socialization and bonding are crucial aspects of the German Shepherd Mastiff mix's personality. These large breed dogs thrive on human interaction and form strong bonds with their family members. Early socialization with other dogs, pets, and people is vital to develop their well-rounded personalities. As gentle dogs, they are patient and tolerant of children, making them excellent family pets. Engaging them in activities like playing fetch, hiking, or dog sports can strengthen the bond between the dog and its owner. The ideal home environment The ideal home environment for a German Shepherd Mastiff mix can accommodate their large size and energy levels. A house with a spacious, securely fenced yard is preferred, allowing them to roam and play freely. Due to their loose fur, regular grooming is necessary to shed and maintain a clean living space. The family should be prepared to provide the dog with adequate exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. Obesity: Due to their large size, German Shepherd Mastiff mixes may be prone to obesity, which can exacerbate other health problems. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly is crucial for their overall well-being. Lifespan and longevity factors The lifespan of a German Shepherd Mastiff mix ranges from 10 to 12 years. However, factors that can influence their longevity include genetics, diet, exercise, and overall healthcare. To ensure a healthy and long life for your Mastiff Shepherd, provide a balanced diet, maintain a consistent exercise routine, and monitor them for any signs of illness or discomfort. Importance of regular vet check-ups and preventative care Regular vet check-ups and preventative care are crucial for the well-being of your German Shepherd Mastiff mix. Daily brushing may be necessary during shedding seasons usually spring and fall to manage the increased shedding. Bathing: Use gentle dog shampoo to bathe your Shepherd Mastiff mix every weeks or as needed. Frequent bathing can strip the natural oils from their coat, so it's essential not to overdo it. Nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care Proper grooming also includes taking care of your dog's nails, ears, and teeth: Nail trimming: Trim your German Shepherd Mastiff mix's nails every weeks to prevent overgrowth and discomfort. Use a dog nail clipper or grinder, and be cautious not to cut the quick, which can cause pain and bleeding. You can use a scratch board if they do not enjoy being cut. Ear cleaning: Check your dog's ears weekly for signs of redness, irritation, or bad odor, which may indicate an infection. He is now 2. He stands 6 ft. He is a wonderful dog. He has an amazing temperament. He's very laid back and so gentle with our small children. He lays on his side patiently if the baby approaches him with his favorite toy.He dismisses the toy completely and licks fingers and toes and loves to be the jungle gym. Otherwise, he likes to lay near the children during group play and just be near them. If they are playing outside, he patrols the perimeter of the yard and redirects children who get too close to the perimeter by walking in front of them until they forget where they are going and turn around LOL. He loves to lounge around, but when he gets outside he loves tug of war, playing with tennis balls and big tree branches! But his favorite toy is the laser pointer. He is very intelligent. When I was pregnant he would always lick my belly. Any time I am sick in the bathroom, he comes and lays his head on my lap until I am done, and then he licks my tears away : same for the kids. He is such a sweet boy. On top of all of this, he is so alert to his surroundings. And if an " intruder " shows up to the house while I am away, he makes it clear they aren't welcome. We had our friend test this theory gladly and we were all pleased with the result! He is our most beloved pet. He is active enough to play but not too demanding and destructive. He loves to snuggle but is also very independent, alert but does not bark incessantly, great natural protective instincts but not overzealous and knows when to protect and when to let the alphas be in charge. He is a definite gentle guardian over small children and even the cat and chickens. He has a pretty low prey drive also. Not to mention he just looks cool as hell : I'm not worried about intruders. German Shepherd and Husky Mix Training Suggestions A fairly intelligent breed interested in learning and in caring for their owner, a German Shepherd and Husky Mix is relatively easy to train. Not properly trained, these dogs can acquire habits that make the owners clench their teeth pull their hair out. From howling too much to knocking things over to chewing on shoes, there are many things you must keep your dog from doing. A German Shepherd and Husky Mix is very sensitive to vocal commands, making the training process more efficient and much easier. Start obedience training at an early age to prevent annoying habits from developing, and so that you and your pup both can live a happy life together. However, it has a predatory nature, and without proper socialization or training, it might get inro trouble with rodent-type pets or even cats. They can also be extremely overprotective of children and other members of the family. If they feel that the humans they love are in danger, they may attack strangers, so watch them for this kind of behavior. We all know that every dog is unique, so you must socialize them correctly to prevent any untoward incidents. Known to be intelligent and extremely loyal, the German Shepherd Husky Mix is a fun loving, sweet, and pleasant dog. It is great service or companion dog for the family. Getting a dog with a Siberian Husky or a German Shepherd descent can break the bank for many first-time owners. Lucky for them, the Siberian Husky German Shepherd is a relatively affordable dog. Be warned, though. Proper breeding costs a lot of money when it comes to veterinary care, health screening, vaccinations, flea treatments, deworming, and many other procedures to ensure that the puppy is healthy. While herding dogs were being bred in Germany throughout the 19th century, the first formally recognized German Shepherd was registered by Max von Stephanitz in .The dog, named Horand von Grafrath, was the result of several generations of selective breeding to create a working dog ideal for herding sheep. The German Shepherd has a very forceful bite, and they are often mischaracterized as aggressive and likely to harm humans. However, while German Shepherds are responsible for a large number of canine attacks on humans, this is largely due to their popularity as pets and how abundant they are rather than any natural, breed-specific aggression. German Shepherds are actually considered great family pets, and they are known to be very good with children, though they can also be somewhat overprotective. .The Siberian Husky, in contrast, comes from Northeastern Asia where they were bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia to pull sleds. The result is an active breed with a lot of endurance that just loves to run. These dogs do very well in cold climates, and they were introduced to Alaska around as part of the Alaskan Nome Gold Rush. While you will still find these dogs working in some frozen terrains, they are now popular household pets. While they are energetic, friendly, and excellent with children, they are also troublemakers if not trained and socialized properly. They enjoy digging, chewing, jumping, and generally escaping any kind of confined space. Both dogs are of a similar size and have a wolf-like appearance, which is part of what made them prime candidates for crossbreeding. What Are Crossbred Dogs? It is worth noting that crossbred dogs, sometimes called designer dogs, are dogs that have been intentionally bred by mixing two or more recognized breeds. It is not a term for dogs bred accidentally or without purebred ancestors. However, crossbred dogs are not recognized as separate breeds in their own right, so their behavior and characteristics are not as predictable as purebred dogs. One of the advantages of purebred dogs is that it is relatively easy to predict their size, appearance, and temperament. Gerberian Shepsky Appearance As both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are medium-sized dogs with a wolf-like appearance, you can expect similar traits from their offspring. German Shepherds tend to be considered medium-to-large-sized dogs. Males typically measure 24 to 26 inches in height at the withers, and the females are usually a bit smaller at 22 to 24 inches. However, both sexes tend to look bigger than other dogs of a similar height, as they have very long necks. Siberian Huskies are a bit smaller, measuring between 19 and 24 inches and weighing between 35 and 60 pounds on average. The females are at the smaller end of the spectrum, and the males are at the larger end. As a result, you can expect Shepskies to be around the smaller range for German Shepherds, with males ranging from 22 to 25 inches and females ranging from 20 to 24 inches in height. When it comes to their weight, males tend to be between 50 to 80 pounds, while females weigh a bit less at 40 to 70 pounds. Shepsky puppies tend to have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, with pointed ears and long noses inherited from both parents. Their eyes will either be brown or blue, and some individuals might have the distinctive dual eye color often associated with huskies. Both parent breeds have a coat ideal for colder climates, so this is something that can be expected from their offspring. They typically have a dual coat with a dense, soft undercoat and another layer of more durable guard hairs on top. As German Shepherds can have either medium-to-long outer coats, the same is true of their Gerberian Shepsky offspring. They are almost never one solid color and will almost always be a mix of at least two different colors. One thing you can expect from all Shepsky coats is that they will be high shedding. Anyone with an allergy to dog hair should be wary about adopting a Shepsky! Gerberian Shepsky Temperament German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, and they are also highly motivated to please, which makes them one of the most trainable dog breeds out there. This quality is also why they are such good working dogs. Siberian Huskies are also very intelligent, but they are far more independent. They have been bred to make challenging decisions while running across dangerous arctic territories, so problem-solving is a necessary skill. As a result, while your Shepsky will almost certainly be a very intelligent dog, they might be a bit more troublesome to train than a German Shepherd. Alternatively, they might choose to entertain themselves by digging or chewing. Both breeds were created to spend a lot of time with humans, with Huskies often staying indoors with their families for warmth. This means they tend to bond quickly with their people and are very good with smaller family members though very small children should never be left unsupervised with any dog. While German Shepherds tend to have guard dog-like protective instincts, Huskies are pack animals and enjoy the company of other dogs. So, it is difficult to predict whether your Shepsky crossbreed will display more alpha-like behavior or be more submissive and play well with other pets. Remember, proper socialization training can go a long way when it comes to ensuring that they play well with others regardless of their temperament. Neither parent breed tends to bark excessively, but your Shepsky will get vocal if they want to alert you to a threat. Huskies tend to howl rather than bark, so keep in mind you might end up with a Shepsky with an adorable howl that may disturb the neighbors. If you do find yourself with a barker, read our guide on dealing with excessive or nuisance barking. Overall, expect your dog to be high energy, combining the herding instinct of a German Shepherd with the running mandate of a Siberian Husky. Caring For A German Shepherd Husky Mix Shepskies tend to be highly trainable, so an experienced dog owner should be able to train them at home using basic positive reinforcement training. Shepskies do best when they have a large backyard where they can spend their energy. Remember, they can be escape artists, which means they need a space that is securely fenced. Fences at least six feet tall are recommended. In addition to having plenty of space, Shepskies need a lot of exercise. They should be taken outside at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes at a time. Dog parks where they can run around off-leash are ideal, as it lets them stretch their legs and burn off excess energy. Just make sure they have been properly socialized before letting them loose. They are not ideal pets for people who spend most of the week in the office or traveling for work. Expect your Shepsky to engage in destructive behavior when they are feeling the stress of abandonment. Shepskies tend to have fairly dry coats. Huskies do not have oily coats, and they will often pass this trait down to their crossbred children. Avoid excessive washing to prevent drying them out further. Regular brushing is advisable to remove shedding hair, since these dogs tend to shed a lot. This is both for their comfort and to make cleanup around the home a little more manageable for you. Shepsky Health Concerns Shepskies have a relatively long lifespan for dogs of their size, and you can expect them to live for around 10 to 14 years. Shepskies can develop joint conditions, particularly in their elbows and hips, which can lead to pain and discomfort moving as they age. Adequate exercise and an orthopedic bed that allows them to take the pressure off their joints are both useful tools in preventing these issues. This unique crossbreed can also be prone to developing eye conditions such as canine glaucoma, corneal dystrophy, juvenile cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. Losing at least some of their eyesight in later life is a common concern. German Shepherd Husky mixes are also slightly more susceptible to developing epilepsy than most other breeds, though the condition is still relatively rare. Medications exist to help manage this condition. This can be prevented with regular cleaning and maintenance. You might be able to find a Gerberian Shepsky in a local shelter to adopt for a small fee, or you can opt to find a dedicated Shepsky breeder. Do Gerberian Shepskies shed a lot? Yes, German Shepherd Husky mixes shed a lot, and there is no getting around it. Both parent breeds have a thick winter coat that is prone to shedding, so this is a common characteristic in their offspring. If you are looking for a medium-sized low shedding dog, consider something with the Poodle breed in the mix, such as a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that they typically pass on to their crossbred offspring. Do German Shepherd Husky mixes smell? Many Huskies pass on their low-oil coat to their crossbred offspring. If you do adopt a Shepsky, remember not to bathe your dog too regularly. The lack of oil can make them prone to having dry skin, and excessive washing can exacerbate this problem. Do Shepskies get cold? Siberian Huskies were bred to deal with extreme cold, and German Shepherds also have a thick coat to deal with colder temperatures. This means their offspring are very well insulated against the cold, and you will almost never have to worry about them being uncomfortable in colder temperatures. Overheating, however, can be an issue, so always carry water when you go out. You will probably find that your Shepsky prefers to relax in cool, shady areas. What is an Alusky? This is a very popular designer breed, as they often have distinctive black and white patterning as well as an overall wolf-like appearance. What dog breeds are commonly mixed with Huskies? As well as German Shepherds, you will find a number of other dog breeds that make a good mix with a Husky. The Verdict On Shepskies If you are looking for a fun and energetic dog that will make a great addition to a boisterous and adventurous family, then a German Shepherd Husky mix can be a great choice. Shepskies are very family-friendly pets that are loyal and highly trainable, but they also need lots of love and attention to keep them healthy and happy. They have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, but are far from aggressive and are generally very good with children. However, they are known for their delightful wolf-like howl. Remember that crossbreed dogs are always somewhat unpredictable in their appearance and temperament, so ensure that you meet the dog you plan on adopting first before deciding whether to add them to your family. Shepskies are best for people who have quite a bit of space for their dog to play and usually have someone to keep them company at home. You will enjoy training your Shepsky yourself if you have a bit of experience with dogs, but steer clear if you have allergies, as they are big shedders! If a female German Shepherd dog GSD has joined your family, and you are thinking about breeding from her, you may be curious about how many puppies you should expect in one litter — as well as how many she might have over her years with you. On average, a German Shepherd can have puppies per litter. Some have as many as 15 or as few as one puppy per litter. On record, the biggest German Shepherd litter was 17 puppies by a dog named Mosha. The gestation period is approximately 63 days about two months after conceiving. However, this number may vary by several days. A German Shepherd dog can have two litters per year until around the age of 8. This means that a German Shepherd Dog can have approximately 14 litters in her entire lifetime. Well, the answer to this may help you understand the quantity of puppies they produce in a litter. The German Shepherd is native to Germany and is a cross breed between working sheep dogs and a dog believed to be a quarter wolf. They were originally bred to protect families and to herd livestock. Are there factors that affect the number of puppies a female German Shepherd can have? How many times in a year can they give birth? Knowing how many puppies to expect may help you plan resources to accommodate them if you are planning on becoming a breeder. A female German Shepherd with a small body will have a smaller litter size compared to a GSD with a bigger body. If you want a larger litter size, therefore, you should breed your German Shepherd before they are seven years or older. The best breeding years are between 2- 5 years of age. As the male dog ages, their sperm count decreases, and this affects the number of puppies in the litter. If you are a breeder, it is best to practice breeding when the male dog is in its prime years, between 2- 5 years. This way, you are likely to get a bigger litter size. The female should also have a healthy diet before breeding. Diet and health go hand in hand. A diet that consists of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates will help your GSD to have a larger litter size. Your vet will help you determine the perfect diet before, during, and after your dog's pregnancy. Although it may be nerve-wracking, you need to be there to help your German Shepherd give birth. A whelping box with a heating pad or a heating lamp will help keep the new-born puppies warm. New-born puppies are unable to regulate their body temperature, hence why the heating pad or lamp will come in handy. Heating pads: place them under the blankets or towels where the puppies lie. Make sure the setting is comfortable for them. At birth, they weigh about 0. German Shepherd dog puppies have four developmental life stages after they are born. You will notice the mother licking her puppies to clean them. Milk from their mother is very crucial at this age. They can begin eating some main foods but still nurse and feed on soft foods. By eight weeks, a puppy has all its teeth, and the teething process begins. At this time, you should ensure each puppy starts to wear a properly-fitted dog collar. For added security, choose a collar that allows you to track their location via GPS. Final Thoughts Owning a dog is a joyous experience, and when you own a German Shepherd, you have a loyal, smart, fierce, and protective dog for life. Once your dog has had them Factors that determine the number of pups that the dog will have Although the body of most animals operates synchronously and wonderfully, dogs are not machines. Therefore they do not always have the same number of pups. In addition, some factors may interfere with the amount of puppies present in the litter, which may vary according to: The age of the dog - the most numerous births often occur from the fourth heat onwards. If the dog is properly nurtured and fed. The dog's general health. When the dog is bred. Female dogs have only two fertile days and breeding them at this stage will ensure greater litter numbers instead of doing it a few days earlier. Dog sperm can survive inside the female for two days, so if bred two days before the fertile time, the female can still get pregnant - but it is likely that only a few sperm are alive to fertilise those eggs, reducing the amount of the dog's litter. It's the bitch who frees the number of eggs that will be exposed to fertilisation depending on factors such as size and heritage, thus the myth that a dog is a stud and that depends solely on the male for the amount of puppies is false. The number of puppies depends on the number of mature eggs that emerge from the ovaries, the day the sexual intercourse is done and then, of course, the fertility of the male dog. Besides, German Shepherds with pedigree tend to have fewer puppies than those that do not have such a pure lineage or care. How many puppies do German Shepherds usually have? We must bear in mind that the German Shepherd is a large breed, so the ovaries have the capacity to produce more eggs and the uterus has more space to store the puppies, which means that they usually have large litters. A German Shepherd which does not have a pedigree lineage usually has between 7 and 9 puppies, while those with pedigree lineage often pop out between 4 and 6 puppies. It is essential to note that this is not a standard because many factors interfere with the formula. There may be bitches that have more or even fewer puppies than indicated here. Once your dog has had them It is essential to respect the time of birth and the first hours in which both puppies and your dog are together. Remember that dogs are highly olfactory, so you should not bathe your dog after giving birth or you could remove its natural odour and thus confuse the puppies. However it is useful to carefully clean the dog basket and wipe it with a damp cloth that has been dipped in warm water. Then dry it with some towels and return it to those puppies. During the first 12 hours, your bitch will not want to eat, but it is important to give her plenty of fresh water to keep her hydrated. When the animal regains its appetite, it must have at its disposal nutritious food. German Shepherd puppies should not be separated from the mother before 8 weeks. This could affect their learning and development. The recommendation, in fact, is to wait until 10 weeks to give them a new home. A junior is the canine version of a teenager, and this is usually the time period between six and twelve months old. Adult dogs have completely finished growing and range between one and seven years old, while mature dog is at least seven years old. After this age, the dog will then be considered middle-aged. The ages of the last two categories will depend on the breed. A senior dog is an older dog that has reached the final quarter of its life expectancy. Since a German Shepherd has a life expectancy between 12 and 14 years, it will enter its senior years when it is between nine and .A geriatric dog is one that has reached the end of its stated life expectancy — and is still going strong. If Gunther the German Shepherd makes it to 15, he is considered geriatric. Is it true that dogs age seven years for every human year? She says it may have stemmed from an observation that dogs lived to be 10 years old, while humans lived to be 70 on average. It is true that dogs age much faster than humans, but the extent and speed of this process depends on many factors. Larger dogs tend to age faster and have shorter life expectancies than smaller dogs. The AKC divides dogs into four size categories: Small 20 pounds or under Medium 21 to 50 pounds Large 51 to pounds Giant Over pounds An adult male German Shepherd usually weighs between 66 and 88 pounds, and an adult female generally weighs between 49 and 73 pounds. Then, until they reach the age of five, they age four years every year. Large dogs that are over five years old then generally age five or six years every year, and a German Shepherd that lives to be 14 is comparable to a human of .How many puppies can German Shepherds have? It is born completely helpless and depends on its mother for everything; it even needs her help to go to the bathroom. The puppy will typically start to crawl when it is a week old, and its eyes will open a few days later. The first baby teeth emerge when the puppy is two weeks old, and it will start going to the bathroom on its own around the same time. The socialization period lasts from the third to the twelfth week. Then, when the puppy can move, see, and hear, it needs to learn the social skills that will enable it to successfully interact with humans and other dogs. However, it still needs to stay with its mother during this time, so she can teach it proper dog behavior and other vital life skills. German Shepherds this age should also be introduced to humans to begin getting used to their presence. They will generally begin playing with their littermates and their humans when they are about four weeks old. Puppies that are at least seven weeks old can then be housebroken. The following video covers the growth and development of a German Shepherd puppy from when it is seven weeks old to six months old. The owner noted such physical changes as increasingly erect ears and darkening fur. The juvenile period lasts from three to six months and ends when the dog reaches sexual maturity. By this age, the puppy has all of its baby teeth. The puppy will be old enough for obedience school towards the end of the juvenile period. By the time a German Shepherd is six months old , it will look mostly like an adult dog, but it has not yet finished growing. It will have reached about 70 percent of its adult height and weight, and it will also have all of its adult teeth. German Shepherds, at this age should be spayed or neutered unless their owner plans to breed them. Aug 3, Share German Shepherds tend to have between five and nine puppies in a litter. Eight is the average. According to the AKC , the largest litter registered was 17 puppies. This litter size is significantly larger than some other breeds. German Shepherds are larger dogs, so they are going to have more puppies than smaller breeds. For instance, Dachshunds only have one to six puppies on average. The largest litter ever came from a Neapolitan Mastiff, a breed that can reach pounds. When it comes to litter sizes, size does matter. It is impossible to tell how many puppies that a particular dog might have until she gets further into her pregnancy. These factors may help you make a good guess, however. This is most obvious when comparing different dog breeds. In turn, small breeds have small litters. However, the exact size of the dog also matters. Smaller German Shepherds will have smaller litters on average than larger German Shepherds. If your dog is larger, she may end up having a larger litter, or she might not. This will reduce the overall size of the litter. Even if you feed her excellent food and take care of her, underlying health problems can cause puppies to perish before they are fully developed. Diabetes is an excellent example of this. However, improperly fluctuating blood sugar can have a massive impact on growing puppies. Without the proper blood sugar levels, many puppies will not develop properly. Short-term conditions can also cause some puppies to develop improperly and be reabsorbed. For instance, infections can cause one or more puppies to stop developing altogether. Most miscarriages go unnoticed without any clinical signs, especially if only a few puppies are lost. Only late-term miscarriages usually get noticed. This seems to happen most commonly in purebred dogs, according to the vets at High Street Steeping Vet Clinic. Purebred dogs may have more genetic abnormalities than mixed breed dogs because they inherit traits from a smaller genetic pool. The odds of them inheriting something harmful is higher, simply because there are fewer genes for them to inherit. Many purebred dogs are also inbred, including the German Shepherd. Middle-aged German Shepherds tend to have larger litters than younger and older dogs. German Shepherds typically have the largest litters around age 5. After that, they may decline in size. However, this decline is more rapid and apparent in some dogs than others. Many older dogs have health problems, which likely affects their litter size too. Some of these health impacts may go unnoticed and therefore, be wrongly attributed to age. Season There is evidence that the season that the dog gives birth affects the litter size. However, other studies found no correlation between when the litter was born and the overall litter size. There may be a regional component to this, though. In areas with more significant seasonal changes, the season may make more of a difference. In the tropics, it may not. However, more studies are needed to determine this possibility. Heritability Studies have found that dogs may inherit their litter size potential. Dogs that are born to bigger litters tend to have bigger litters themselves. If there is another factor at play, it will likely take precedent. Plus, much of this heritability may be linked to the size of the dog. Many dogs are going to be a similar size as their parents. Nutrition Image Credit: Monika Wisniewska, Shutterstock There are a few nutritional components that can affect litter size and the overall health of the mother and her puppies. When a mother dog becomes pregnant, her nutritional needs change. Protein is essential for pregnant dogs. This is similar to what puppies need, so many pregnant dogs are often fed puppy-intended dog food. Fatty acids may also play a role. Dogs with lower levels of serum glucose in their amniotic fluid tend to have smaller litter sizes. Therefore, feeding them a diet higher in omega fatty acids may be helpful. Image Credit: J. Feeding your canine a better diet may result in a bigger litter, for instance. If your dog is sick, it is paramount that you treat them before attempting to create a litter. However, these factors have to be adjusted before the dog gets pregnant. Once the dog has conceived, it is impossible to increase their litter size, though you can prevent losses. There are also many factors out of your control. While there are a few things that you can do to reduce the risk of these issues, you can never prevent them entirely. Even if your dog lives in a clean environment and is healthy, infections can still occur. You should be feeding her food suitable for puppies as soon as you plan on breeding her or at least as soon as you find out that she is pregnant. Choosing which dogs to breed also impacts litter size and can be controlled to a certain extent. However, some dogs may have small litter sizes but may otherwise be great breeding candidates. In general, to increase your dog's litter size, we recommend doing the following: Regular testing for infections Regular vet checks for reproductive tract disease Final Thoughts The average German Shepherd litter size is about eight puppies. However, there are many factors that can go into this. Keeping your dog healthy is essential to maximizing litter sizes. But many factors are outside of your control. If a puppy inherits specific genes, they are less likely to develop correctly and make it to birth, lowering the overall litter size. Related Reads:. In rare cases, German shepherds eat their newborns. Be watchful to avoid such instances. Related Posts:. Puppies If your German Shepherd is pregnant or you are planning on breeding you may be wondering how many puppies can a German Shepherd have. The amount of puppies each German Shepherd has will vary on many different factors. This article will answer dive into the factors to help you better predict the number of puppies your GSD will have. Generally, you can expect a German Shepherd to have between 5 and 8 puppies per litter. However, German Shepherds have had litters as large as 14 and as small as only 1. There are many factors that contribute to the size of the litter. A German Shepherd can have puppies twice a year. Large dogs like German Shepherds go into heat around every 6 months. During their heat is when they are capable of becoming pregnant. A normal heat cycle lasts between two and four weeks long. Thus, if you breeders or individuals who are looking to breed their GSD track their heat timing and plan to have them mate during their heat. German Shepherds are pregnant for nine weeks on average. Factors That Affect German Shepherd Littler Size Although it is normal for a German Shepherd to have between five and eight puppies a litter, there are many factors that can increase or decrease the litter size. The most common factors are below: The size of the female dog The size of the dog has a big impact of how many puppies they can carry. Although German Shepherds are considered to be a large dog breed some female German Shepherds are larger than others. A female GSD that is larger will be able to carry more pups than a smaller one. Inbreeding Another factor that can contribute to litter size is inbreeding. A pregnancy that is the result of inbreeding will generally produce less puppies than one that is not. Accordingly, if you want to increase your GSD litter size make sure not to bred a female with a male that is related. The age of female The age of the female German Shepherds also plays a role in their potential litter size. Older German Shepherds will generally have smaller litters. The prime age to breed a GSD is between 2 and 5 years of age. You should not breed an elderly GSD. Just like with human males, the sperm count of male German Shepherds will decrease as they age. This decrease can make it harder for them to get a female pregnant and can also impact the litter size if they do get a female GSD pregnant. Health of the female Another factor that is important is the overall health of the female German Shepherd. In order for any dog to produce a healthy plentiful litter of puppies the dog carrying the pups has to be in prime health. Leading up to pregnancy your dog should be fed a high-quality diet, and during pregnancy a GSD will require a diet in that a certain amount of protein, fat and carbohydrates to ensure a health pregnancy. Additionally, pregnant German Shepherds can sometimes need dietary supplements if they are not getting the appropriate nutrients through their diet. Conclusion There are many factors that impact how many puppies German Shepherds can have. Most commonly German Shepherds will have between five and eight puppies, but age, health, and inbreeding can cause a GSD to bear a smaller litter. Breeders who are looking to increase litter size will need to make sure that all those controllable factors are in line and let nature do the rest. Breed Title Goldador Puppies Temperament Goldadors are an amazing combination of the intelligence and trainability of the Labrador and the friendly, gentle personality of the Golden Retriever. With their outgoing, friendly character and sweet disposition, Goldadors make excellent family pets around children and other animals as they have a great aptitude for understanding people. In terms of temperament, these beloved pups are highly sociable but not overly boisterous or hyper; they enjoy playing fetch but rest just as happily on your lap or at your feet while you work. Golden Labrador Retriever Puppy Health Considerations Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around years — our Goldadors for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Golden Labrador Retriever puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. Finding a Golden Labrador puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. Depending on the climate they live in, Goldadors may need regular baths — however omitting shampoo once or twice a year will ensure their coat retains its natural oils. Finally it is recommended to check the ears regularly and trim nails as needed. Adopted Golden Labrador Retriever Puppies. Tomato leaves stem or unripe fruit Alcohol, beer, wine or liquor Grapes or raisins Golden Retriever Crossed with Labrador Exercise Requirements The Lab Golden Retriever Mix has an active temperament so they might get destructive if they get bored. It is recommended to exercise them at least 2 hours daily. Getting them to do physical activities every day will help keep him happy and healthy. Here are some outdoor activities that you can try with your Golden Retriever Lab Mix: Hiking: It is a great way to turn your daily walk more challenging and exciting for your dog. Swimming: Utilize your private pool and do a swimming exercise with your dog companion. Swimming does not only serve as an exercise activity to yourself and to your companion dog, but it is also a great bonding experience. It also provides relief from the heat during the summer months. Make sure you supervise your dog all the time while doing this activity. Dock Diving: This is a fun sports activity to enjoy with your dog. All you have to do is throw a floating toy and encourage your dog to jump and swim out to retrieve it. If you and your Golden Retriever Lab Mix want to upgrade the challenge, you can try joining a Dock Diving Club and compete with other dogs. Play Fetch: This is a classic outdoor game that is great to do in summer. Challenge your dog by putting a twist to the activity, you can either use a Frisbee or a tennis racquet to make the object travel farther for your Golden Labrador to retrieve and return back to you. However, you should not be working them too much because when it comes to recovering objects, both parent breeds of Golden Retriever Lab Mix can be overly enthusiastic. However, even though they are intelligent dogs and has a friendly nature, you still need to put time and effort to train them better. Both parent breeds were bred to carry things. The best way to teach your Goldador not to bark is to socialize them frequently with strangers. Use Positive Reinforcement The Labrador crossed with Golden Retriever is a sensitive type of dog, so training them using positive reinforcement will be very helpful. Make sure to avoid negative punishment-based training since this hybrid dog may end up fearing you rather than respecting you as their leader. Make it a regular routine to reward your puppy whenever they do something right. Training your Goldador consistently in a positive method will give you pet companions that are obedient and good-natured. Do Mental Exercise The Golden Retriever mixed with Lab is an intelligent dog, and they need stimulating mental activities to avoid developing any aggressive behaviors, such as nuisance barking and chewing. Without proper mental exercise, Goldador puppies will grow into a passive, timid and uninspired dog. Labrador Golden Retriever Mix and Families Despite its large size, the Labrador mixed with Golden Retriever is a great family dog because of its easy-going personality. It is extremely friendly and affectionate. The Goldador is the type of dog that goes well in a loving and active family — one that considers him as a family member. The Golden Labradors cherish the company with children. They are naturally gentle, but they can play tirelessly as long as your kids can keep up. However, due to their sheer size, supervision is still needed around toddlers and infants. The Goldadors makes an excellent therapy and companion dog. Because of their affectionate nature, they generally do well when given lots of attention and affection. These hybrid dogs love to be with people, and hence it is tough for them to cope with solitude. So give love lots of love and affection to your Goldador Lab Retriever Mix and expect that it will shower you back with love. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Labrador is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The goal was to combine these two highly popular breeds to create a dog that exhibits the best traits from both of them. A mixed dog breed can take after one parent breed more than the other or any combination of traits from the parent breeds. This can result in some variation among individual puppies. But, overall, a Golden Labrador is friendly, intelligent, energetic, and affectionate. Although this mixed breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and more. This large designer breed is characterized by their energetic personality and friendly disposition. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are open, friendly, and affectionate, so you can expect the same in your Golden Labrador puppy. They are very playful and get along fabulously with children, other dogs, and other pets. They may be alert enough to be a good watchdog, but they do not make good guard dogs. They are instinctually more interested in making new friends and getting attention than they are with anything else. They can have a slight prey drive, but most of the time, they are just curious and interested in playing and making friends. The Golden Labrador is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Their large size and energy tend to make them a better fit for larger homes with room to run. They can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given enough exercise and mental stimulation. But, small spaces can be a challenge because they are large dogs that are so playful and energetic. Golden Labradors do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they love their families, thrive on attention, and get bored easily, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As a mixed breed, a Golden Labrador can inherit the potential health conditions of one or both of the parent breeds. Although the Golden Labrador is a relatively healthy dog breed, there are some potential health conditions to be aware of. These include eye problems like progressive retinal atrophy and joint issues common to large dogs like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. Like their parent breeds, the Golden Labrador can be prone to weight gain, which does put them at risk of diabetes later in life. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to ensure genetic conditions are not being passed on to puppies. Regular vet visits, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise can help keep your dog healthy and reduce preventable diseases. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are highly intelligent and highly trainable, so the Golden Labrador should be no different. Eager to please their owners, these dogs pick up on things quickly and respond best to positive training methods focused on praise and reward. This dog breed, like both of the parent breeds, is a great fit for owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. Their high energy can sometimes be a challenge, so you may want to consider puppy training and obedience classes. This designer dog breed may be called a Golden Labrador, but they can show up in many colors. A cream, yellow, or golden coat may be the most common, but a Golden Labrador can also have a black, red, or brown coat. It tends to be a dense double coat that is short or medium in length. This dog breed will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. During seasonal changes, you may want to increase to daily brushing. Not only will this make your dog more comfortable, but it will also decrease the amount of loose fur that ends up around your house. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Golden Labrador. Floppy ears tend to trap more dirt, moisture, and debris, which makes them more prone to developing ear infections than ears that stick straight up. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Beyond that, you can use vet-approved dental hygiene chews and treats and even a specially-formulated dental care diet to supplement your efforts. Getting them used to it early and keeping it a positive experience can make grooming a lot easier as your puppy grows into a big dog! Plus, it can become a bonding experience that your dog looks forward to. Golden Labradors are high-energy dogs. Daily walks, playtime, and some extra activity are generally enough for this dog to stay happy and healthy. But, they will probably tire out before you do! Their friendly nature makes the Golden Labrador a great fit for trips to the dog park. Try teaching your dog how to play frisbee. With their retriever background, it could become one of their favorite activities. You can also train your Golden Labrador for several dog sports like agility, dock diving, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Golden Labrador usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Golden Labrador generally lives years. Although Golden Labrador is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes referred to as a Goldador or a Goldador Retriever. Featured Golden Labrador Article. Meanwhile, Cambaliza expressed interest in the same puppy — her own two dogs had recently passed away. They communicated with the sellers on the phone, multiple times. They went to their home and saw not only the puppy, but its parents. They asked a lot of questions, which they said Nicolis-Russell answered with ease. But when it came time to get the puppy, the families all received a similar text message. They all had to go to the vet. Story continues below advertisement The news made Potter suspicious. As Sarah Kraus reports, they have a warning for people buying puppies online. The Berkhotlz children were upset. And then the question is why? I wanted to trust her and believe in her. Tawnya responded to the post, urging her to avoid buying from the couple in Edmonton. Potter also responded to the post, and they all realized their stories were very similar, right down to the texts they had been sent. They contacted a lawyer and demanded their money be returned. Russell said the whole incident was an accident. I told them that story hoping it would be ok. He said the puppy is now with another, fourth family. Its adoption process includes an application and an interview. The organization does not operate a facility or physical location. Poodles and Poodle mixes that have been surrendered by owners or brought in from shelters are placed in foster homes and cared for there until they find their forever home. Need to Know Many nationally focused rescues rely on foster homes or a foster-to-adopt model to place dogs. Several have regional coordinators who can work with you to help find a suitable dog to adopt. In addition to Poodles, they also find homes for several other breeds. Before adoptable dogs go to their forever homes, this organization rehabilitates any behavioral problems the pup may have. This helps make sure every dog has the best chance to never be surrendered again. The organization rescues abandoned Poodles, provides medical care, and ensures dogs are placed in loving homes that match their needs. Everyone in the family must be a part of the adoption process for your application to be approved. Need to Know If you choose a Standard Poodle, or a Poodle mix the size of a standard, Florida Poodle Rescue requires your yard to have a 6-foot fence prior to adoption. Their fee varies and is based on the Poodle's age, size, and needs. Poodles can be adopted if you live within a mile radius of Elk River, Minnesota. Michigan Standard Poodle Rescue Michigan Standard Poodle Rescue is not restricted to finding forever homes in its home state, but also in neighboring states. Dogs aren't adopted on a first-come, first-serve basis, but rather on a case-by-case basis connecting the right dog with the home. This organization isn't restricted to purebred Standard Poodles. They also have Poodle mixes available; however, most dogs are about the same size as the Standard. Quick Tip Looking through the adopted dogs can show you the approximate size and variety of breeds available with this organization. They provide medical care, behavioral assessment, and foster care to Poodles until they find a perfect home. A home visit is required for final approval of your application and will be done before your adoption is complete with this organization. Are you InTheKnow? Sign up for our newsletter featuring all the latest stories and products we love. Invalid email I agree to receive email communications from LoveToKnow. NCPR also provides education on Poodle care and behavior, offering you a supportive hand before, during, and after adoption. Looking through its available dogs, you will see Poodles of all sizes, along with mixes. You can submit an interest form for a volunteer to reach out to you regarding which dog would fit best with your family. Things to Think About When Considering Standard Poodle Adoption If you are contemplating Standard Poodle adoption, you owe it to yourself and your potential new companion to understand this breed's needs. Standards are generally happy, outgoing, and intelligent pets, but they also require a bit more maintenance than the average dog. These Dogs Need Exercise: Standard Poodles are fairly large dogs with a great deal of energy to spare. They need daily exercise and mental stimulation to be happy. Poodles Must Be Groomed: Poodle hair grows continually throughout these dogs' lives. In addition to home grooming, plan to take them to a professional regularly. There are a ton of great rescue groups active on social media, including Facebook, but not all are reliable. Watch for these traits to determine if a group is focused on rescue and has a good reputation. Transparency: Make sure the organization is transparent. Legitimate rescues openly share information about operations, including the adoption process, medical treatments provided, and the animal's living conditions. Check nonprofit status: Check if the organization is registered as a non-profit and has a clear, reputable record. Watch out for too many purebred dogs: Be wary of rescues that always have a high number of popular or purebred dogs available. It could be a puppy mill disguised as a rescue. Outrageous fees: Out of the ordinary adoption fees without an explanation, like past medical expenses, could be a red flag. Check reviews and comments: Always research reviews, look for recommendations, and watch for warnings. Maybe someone had to move, the dog's owner passed away, or the dog has a health issue. Don't hesitate to ask why the dog is up for adoption and what steps they have taken to to correct or treat any issues the dog might have. A reputable shelter won't hesitate to share this info. Taking the time to sort these issues out means you have a better chance of finding the right dog for you. Think about it: all of our dogs have been abandoned at least once in their lives. Please Note: We can only adopt in Florida, since we require a home visit. Visit petfinder. By adopting a poodle or poodle mix from Coastal Poodle Rescue, you will be providing a loving and safe forever home to a very deserving dog. Every day in Florida, over 2, homeless pets are killed. Many more are abandoned, some after years of abuse or neglect, or after having served in puppy mills or backyard breeding operations. In most cases, this does not begin to cover the medical expenses incurred. All dogs are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested for heartworms and intestinal parasites. Home visits and interviews help us determine the kind of dog that will best fit your home environment and lifestyle. Filling out an adoption profile does not guarantee adoption nor does it obligate you to adopt a poodle. Some dogs have special needs, so not all dogs will be a good match for every home. Compatible poodles may not be immediately available; your patience is appreciated. Most dogs in rescue are adults; puppies are rarely, if ever, available. Remember, the more conditions that you make such as color, age, and sex , the longer it will take to find a suitable poodle to match your environment. Please consider carefully before submitting your Profile. We encourage you to discuss the matter with all your family members. If you are ready and have read the above-listed pages, you will need to gather the following information: Your current or previous vet name and phone number. Current or previous groomer name and phone number. Three references. If you rent, your landlord's name and phone number. For phone numbers that do not apply to you, enter all zeros for the phone number. If you do not answer every question, you will not be able to submit it. Estimated Vet and grooming costs require a dollar amount. Please take the time to read the following:. Taking in a rescue can be challenging. You must not take for granted that the Poodle has been taught to live with people. Our rescues come from a lot of different situations, but even the most loved pet has learned how to live with a different set of rules than they will be given in a new home. All rescues have baggage, and we will do our best to be up front about what we know about our dogs. We will only place a rescue in a home where we believe it will have a good chance of successfully integrating with its new people. When we take in a rescue Poodle, we will groom it. Sometimes that is the first introduction to the grooming tools, so training starts at that time. Sometimes our rescues have never been leash trained, and we will work on that as well. We recommend that the new owner enroll in an obedience class with their rescue Poodle. This will help the dog bond more quickly to you and helps you to become a confident owner. We make sure the Poodle is spayed or neutered before it goes into a new home. No matter the age of the Poodle that you adopt, you must begin its routine and schedule as if you had just brought home a young puppy. Rescues will exhibit anxiety when left alone so begin crate training immediately. Dogs usually learn to love their crates as their safe den, and the crate will keep the dog safe when you are not around. It will also give you peace of mind that your house will be intact when you return. Members of the Poodle Club can give you advice on crate training. Rescued Poodle Stories: One of our members traveled with her job. She found Poodles at various times that needed to be re-homed. When we groomed her, the coat was so matted it came off in one piece, similar to shearing a sheep wool. She scared away a burglar her first night in the home. Another of our rescues, lost in a storm, was taken to a veterinary office with a compound fracture of the leg. No other rescue group had the dollars to pay for fixing the leg. Our group was called. We ascertained the options for repairing the leg and choose the less expensive option because one of our members could foster the Poodle and take care of the leg. The leg healed and the Standard Poodle could run and jump normally again. He was adopted by a loving family. One of our members adopted a miniature Poodle from the local animal shelter. It had been hit by a car and was dragging a front leg. Our member took it to a private veterinarian where the leg was x-rayed and checked. Another member bought a lovely Standard Poodle but felt she needed a playmate. Ahluv was happy being an only poodle, but seemed to miss playing with other dogs. After much search we found Annie, a young female Standard Poodle in the St. Louis area that really touched our hearts. The couple knew when they saw and read about her that she belonged with their family. After many e-mails to the rescue, who agreed to do an out of state adoption, and prayer, they went on an adventure RV trip to St. Louis during a heat wave in August to pick up Annie. AhLuv was the happiest dog the rescue people had ever met which may have been helpful in easing their minds and letting Annie go back to New Mexico. Annie is the sweetest dog. After much love and attention, one would never know she has any problems. She can run, jump, give AhLuv a run for her money, eats well, sleeps well, plays well, travels well and takes walks well. The first thing you should do is to choose a local breeder and try to meet them. Look at their set-up. Are they near the puppies at all times? Or do they leave them outdoors? How much attention do they pay to each pup? Look at the doggie parents as a good indicator of how your pup will be as an adult. They should be sociable, well-fed, and hygienic. Here is some information about the hair loss that you should take note of. Some breeds will naturally shed more than others. Some kids are going to shed very little. French bulldogs don't shed very much, but they do shed their undercoat twice a year. Since french bulldogs don't shed that often, you know that seeing patches of hair falling out is very abnormal. Here are a few things that may have caused this hair loss: 1- The Hair Is Falling out Because of a Lack of Nutrition According to Royal Canin , most dogs will begin to lose their hair if they are not eating a well-balanced diet. It is very similar to what would happen to humans if they weren't eating the right foods. Most dog owners care about the health of their pets, so they try to cook the dog's meals and make foods as natural as possible. Going the homecooked route is an excellent alternative to generic kibble. However, it is a method that should be used with caution. You must make sure that the diet is equal, consistent, and well-balanced. Generic kibble is quite dull, but it does the trick as far as making sure there is a balance in the ingredients. If you are making it yourself, you should try to include the same components if not better. Most dog owners trip up on this and cause more harm than healing. Your veterinarian might try to see if anything else contributed to the hair loss first. If you find that the hair loss is due to the diet, work with your vet to come up with a proper one. The most common problems stem from Hypothyroidism and having a low thyroid problem. Most people mistake the two and cause a misdiagnosis. However, it is true that those problems cause significant hair loss. Diseases can cause hair loss, as well. Cushing's disease would be another one. Cushing's disease happens when the dog is producing too many hormones. The overproduction of hormones suppresses the body's ability to grow hair properly. According to The Honest Kitchen , Cushing's disease can also cause skin thinning and hyperpigmentation. Your veterinarian will most likely prescribe the dog a thyroid medication to control the overproduction. Your dog may also have to undergo some testing to ensure that nothing is leading to a bigger problem. Environmental means that the dog is allergic to something in the environment. It might be a fragrance or a certain spray that you use or a certain plant that is in the room. Any of these allergic reactions can cause major hair loss. The dog might also be very itchy and scratchy. Hair loss won't be the only symptom of an allergic reaction. In some cases, you can probably get an over-the-counter drug to treat some reactions that your dog has. Wag Walking recommends that you keep track of all events of hair loss so you can make a detailed report to the vet. Sometimes there can be more than one reason why the hair is falling out. Bacterial infections and yeast infections are sometimes a side effect of another infection or disease. In that case, avoid self-diagnosing at all costs. Contact a professional for a proper evaluation of the problem. Your vet will probably give you some antibiotics to treat the illnesses. If your dog has ringworm, you will most likely get some type of cream or ointment. There are two versions of the mange disease. Demodectic mange cannot be transmitted to any humans. Sarcoptic mange can be transmitted to other people. This parasitic mites that come from this disease will thrive in the hair follicles. Since they are biting at the roots of the hair, it will begin to fall out. Sarcoptic mange is very itchy as well. After a while, you may notice that there are scabs and sores on the skin from the bites. It is best to avoid freaking out if this situation ever occurs. Just talk to your vet and be patient. This type of disease can be taken care of with the same products used to eliminate fleas and ticks. Metastatic cancer is paraneoplastic that is common as well. Paraneoplastic means that it is an internal disease that manifests itself onto the skin of the dog. In order to find out if your dog has this type of cancer, your dog will have to get diagnosed through a biopsy at the veterinarian's location. Your dog will most likely be treated through medication and some form of chemotherapy. This type of alopecia is most common in English bulldogs. It can happen to french bulldogs , but it is pretty rare. When it happens, the hair will be dark, and it won't cause any itching. Most dog owners don't have to medicate this problem because the hair will grow back on its own. If you do go to the vet for this, you might just get a melatonin medication. Hills Pet suggests that if you live in a moderate climate, seasonal shedding will be minimal. Remember to consult a professional before you get any medication or try to diagnose the problem on your own. One symptom could be the result of multiple problems and vice versa. I will explain in as a helpful a way as possible all I know about French Bulldog hair loss and what I have learned about Frenchie alopecia. Why is my French Bulldog losing so much hair? Once you rule that out, you can then explore the possibility of bald spots and alopecia due to entirely different reasons. You can see what it looks like in a video on our French Bulldog YouTube channel. Why Frenchies lose their hair by shedding Frenchies will lose their undercoat hair about twice a year; replacing their thinner or thicker coats for summer or wintertime. However, if your Frenchie is losing more hair than is normal, then it could be a sign of a skin condition , allergies or another medical condition. The bottom line is, you should always talk to your vet for a professional opinion, but there are some tell-tale signs that your Frenchie is losing hair for a different reason. It could be that you see bald patches and bald spots that were not there before? But why is your French Bulldog losing so much hair? Is there anything wrong? And is there anything you can do about it? There are many reasons your French Bulldog could be suffering from hair loss, all of which a vet would check for during an appointment. These include: 1. Allergies Like humans, Frenchies can also suffer from a range of allergies to different materials, environmental factors, or food. This can lead to skin irritations, causing them to scratch , bite and chewing on their fur, leading to hair loss. Common allergies include plastic and latex materials, dyeing agents, cleaning products, plants, antibiotics or certain ingredients in types of dog food. Acute moist dermatitis is often caused by moisture and dampness in folds of skin, especially around the neck area. You might see your French Bulldog losing hair on sides of the mouth and neck area bald spots. Mange Mange can be a scary word for many Frenchie owners, conjuring images or scabbed and furless dogs, but it is actually quite a common condition, being highly contagious between dogs. Sarcoptic mange or canine scabies is the most common of the two and is highly contagious. It causes intense itching and, as a result of scratching, dogs suffer open sores, scabs and hair loss. The good news is, that mange is easily treated using oral antibiotics and topical creams and shampoos. Your vet will be able to diagnose mange within seconds of seeing your Frenchie, hair loss being one of the obvious signs. Stress related hair loss When a dog is anxious, restless or just bored, they can find a release of some of that excess energy through licking themselves and things around them. Handy Hint: Often Frenchies will create bald patches due to licking when stressed with separation anxiety. Often found on the lower parts of their legs, it results in a red patch of furless skin, which can often become irritated or even begin to bleed. If you see French Bulldog alopecia on their flanks, this is what the hair loss could be. The dermatitis and infection can be treated with antibiotics, anti-lick strips and topical medicines, whilst the behavioral and psychological cause can be helped through training, more interaction with the animal and longer walks to relieve their excess energy. Hormones Just like humans, Frenchies can suffer from hormonal imbalances, such as the over-production or under-production of oestrogen, testosterone, thyroxin or other hormones, which can cause hair loss among other symptoms. One of the most common causes, however, is hypothyroidism, caused through a malfunction in the canine thyroid gland; this can be treated with an oral hormone replacement medication, such as thyroxine. Hormonal imbalances can result in hair loss patches and bald spots on areas such as the back, tail, around the mouth, sides of the body, and around the eyes. Abnormal organ functions While it is rarer, other things that causes hair loss in French Bulldogs can be problems with their internal organs, such as kidneys, liver, and intestines. Health issues like bowel disease, kidney failure, and liver failure can cause dull, thinning hair liver failure also causing orange-yellow skin, and kidney failure is accompanied by a musty smell to their coats. Bacterial infection French Bulldogs can also lose their hair due to parasitic infections like as ringworm, or bacterial and fungal infections like folliculitis. Sometimes caused by previously mentioned forms of dermatitis and immune system disorders, folliculitis shows itself through a collection of red swellings around the hair follicles but can be treated with topical creams and antimicrobial shampoos as well as treatment to any underlying cause. Ringworm appears in lesions on the head, ears, and paws of a dog, and if often picked up when your dog is digging around in the dirt where the fungus resides. Ringworm is easily tested for and can be treated with an anti-fungal shampoo and topical medication over the course of a couple of weeks. If you are concerned that your dog may have any of the above conditions or are just worried about possible causes of French Bulldog hair loss, always visit your vet for a proper, medical opinion and diagnosis before taking any steps to treating your pet yourself. How to treat hair loss in a French Bulldog Some of these conditions, when left untreated, can cause harm to your Frenchie. In more serious cases, hair loss can often be the sign of a fatal disease so needs to be checked out by a professional. Once you have a diagnosis from a licensed vet, they will often prescribe a medical hair loss treatment for your Frenchie, ranging from topical creams and hydrocortisone shampoos to hormone treatment and antibiotics. Change their diet If your Frenchie has an allergy to a particular ingredient in dog food, then the obvious remedy is to change what you are feeding them. Natural topical remedies There are some common kitchen ingredients that you might already have that can help relieve the itching from dry skin conditions. By relieving the itching, you can reduce the hair loss and bald patches from scratching and licking. Some dog owners say lemon juice helps. It contains anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, as does apple cider vinegar, which can also help to boost the immune system. To use it, simply dilute the lemon juice or vinegar in warm water, before dipping a cotton ball into the mixture and applying it to the affected bald patch. Regular brushing will help to keep the hair healthy and could lead to a reduction in how much hair your French Bulldog loses each day. Use a humidifier Room humidifiers can really help a dog with dry and itchy skin, meaning less scratching, thus reduced hair loss. More about French Bulldog bald spots French bulldogs with hair loss behind ears Mites are a common cause of hair loss in Frenchies, even those with shorter fur, and one of the common symptoms of a mite or tick infestation in your dog is fur loss behind their ears. Ear mites are an extremely common and highly contagious species of mite in cats and dogs, causing scabbed skin around the back of their ears, as well as lesions from your pet constantly scratching to relieve the itching sensation. These open wounds can also lead to bacterial infections, resulting in crusting and discharge of pus, which may have to be treated separately. It is important that the mite infestation is treated, as it is the root cause. Once the mites have been got rid of, the scratching and skin lesions will often resolve themselves with a little topical treatment. After a few weeks you might then see the hair loss behind the ears grow back to what it used to be before the mites took hold. However, it can also be a sign of allergies. Often, allergies or skin issues can begin around the eyes and ears of your dog, before spreading outwards around the body. Common signs of discomfort around their eyes include rubbing their faces against things, excessive scratching of a particular area, eye-watering, sneezing and a runny nose. If your Frenchie is losing patches of hair around their eyes, be sure to check for any open sores and raw skin which can be a sign of dermatitis , as well as lesions and scaly skin in localized areas a symptom of ringworm. The definition of French Bulldog alopecia While it may sound like a terrible skin condition, alopecia is actually just the name for seasonal baldness. Often found in breeds of French, American and British Bulldogs, this type of hair loss is completely natural and is caused by changes in the seasons. Shorter periods of sunlight during the day triggers their hormones to regrow their fur into a thicker coat, ready for the approach of winter, and then back again for a thinner summer coat. Because of this, French Bulldog baldness and hair loss does not result in any skin conditions, dryness or itching, and is purely just a change in outward appearance and over time the hair will grow back. When seasonal baldness comes into effect, you may notice these bald patches are far darker than the rest of their skin, resulting from hyperpigmentation. This is usually seen around their flanks and hind legs, but after a while, the hair will regrow and cover the area. Conclusion Despite Frenchies only having a very short, fine coat and only losing their undercoat a couple of times a year, they do produce a lot of hair. This will often be mistaken for problematic hair loss — which instead is typically when you see patches and bald spots in isolated areas rather than uniform hair loss with natural shedding. But just like any other furry friend, they also shed. Dogs normally shed hair to get rid of extra or damaged hair and to cool down during the summer months. However, if you notice that your Frenchie is shedding more hair than usual, they might be suffering from a skin condition. Is it normal for a French Bulldog to lose hair? As I mentioned in the intro, hair loss is a common process for all dog breeds as they shed. Why is my French Bulldog losing hair? There are several different reasons as to why a French Bulldog loses hair. Here are the primary ones: Food irritants — know what you are feeding your dog all the time and avoid foods that may cause allergies. Environmental irritants — pollens and other airborne irritants can cause skin conditions for Frenchies. Hot spot or acute moist dermatitis — a condition that is common to all canines but especially Frenchies who develop moisture in their skin folds. Chronic dry skin — caused by too much bathing. Dandruff — hair dandruff caused by allergens inside your house. Skin allergies due to food and environmental irritants are the most common reasons why French Bulldogs lose hair. You will know if your Frenchie is having an allergy issue if they start licking or chewing their paws constantly, rubbing their face for no reason on the ground, or scratching non-stop at their ears Because of the folds in their skin especially on the lower jaw, French Bulldogs also develop lip-fold pyoderma, a bacteria, and yeast infection due to the constant moistness in the folded area. A severe lip-fold pyoderma can cause their skin to redden and it can spread and lead to hair loss. To reduce the chance of hair loss on your French Bulldog, give your furry friend these three things — routine care , good diet , and enough exercise. Routine care — Treat your Frenchie like your own child. Be sure to brush their hair regularly, check their wrinkles for moisture or yeast infections, and keep them away from typical food or environmental irritants as much as possible. Good diet — Feed your French Bulldog a lean diet which is free from typical food irritants that cause allergies. If they are acting strange and scratching their skin constantly, check with your veterinarian. Wrapping up There is no need to wait for your dog to start having hot spots and dry patches before visiting a veterinarian. If you think your French Bulldog is shedding more hair than usual and has been vigorously scratching, start checking for possible causes. If you are not feeding it anything out of the ordinary, check the environment your pup is playing in. This means that your dog still can live a happy, fulfilling life even with these medical challenges. If so, they might have pressure sores. Pressure sores, also known as bedsores or decubital ulcers, occur most often in senior dogs, large breeds, or heavy breeds. These calluses lead to thicker skin and hair loss. Older and heavier dogs are more likely to experience pressure sores simply because they are less active and oftentimes have less muscle mass. Although sometimes tricky, these sores can be prevented, and the symptoms can be alleviated. Genetics Just like with humans, genetics plays a role in hair loss in dogs. Other dog breeds simply experience patchy hair or baldness on different parts of their body, such as the chest, back, thigh, or neck. Typically, this type of hair loss occurs after the dog reaches one year old. Infection or Infestation These words sound scary, and the resulting hair loss or skin conditions can look even scarier. Hair loss from infection or infestation can be caused by ringworm fungus, mange mites, fleas, parasites, ticks, and bacteria. In fact, fleas and mites are oftentimes the most common culprits behind hair loss and allergic reactions. These pests cause irritation, which is often misdiagnosed as an allergic reaction resulting in unnecessary treatments such as steroids. While many dogs will lick, bite, and scratch at the infected skin, resulting in wide-spread hair loss, there are additional signs and symptoms to watch out for. Some signs your dog might be experiencing an infection or infestation are as follows: Hair loss around the ears, eyes, and mouth Oily skin.
