MANY breeders of imported Golden Retrievers have now adopted a practice of getting FCI health testing done on puppies and dogs under a year of age by unscrupulous breeders overseas. These tests are done before hips and elbows are developed and before possible hip dysplasia will show up. How We Raise Our Puppies There are always three experienced adults working full time raising our puppies a husband, wife, and adult daughter. If we should have more than two litters that overlap, our other adult daughter will also help. When puppies are here, they are our priority. Everything else in our lives takes a back seat to the puppies so we can work full time around the clock doing puppy work. Our home is large enough for all puppies to be raised inside our home. We have five doggy doors to five different puppy play yards where puppies over 5 weeks freely live coming in and out of our home. We have almost a dozen fenced areas, and a total of nine acres fenced for our dogs and puppies. By far, most that try to earn it fail. Tara and Karen earned the required points in less than a year and a half including time off for Tara to whelp and raise a litter of puppies and for Karen to raise and train dozens of other puppies. There were less than 70 dogs to earn it nationwide in .Karen has also recently won Combined High in Trial on the last day of the Southeastern regional competition. There are eleven regions in the U. The regional competitions are where the best competitors in the country compete to earn invitations to the National Obedience Competition the NOC. The NOC is the most prestigious obedience event in the country. Each region hosts only one regional competition a year and the NOC happens only once a year as well. Tara has also been invited to perform obedience at the Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster. Positive Reinforcement Training Only! Karen is one of very few trainers in the competitive obedience world who uses exclusively positive reinforcement training. Sure, a Doberman can do the job just fine and there are definitely dog breeds that have stronger olfactory senses or stronger bites but they may not be willing to obey every command in every situation. They are too intelligent to outright obey everything which can sometimes be perceived as stubborn. Does that mean the German Shepherd is not smart? Absolutely not. In fact, the German Shepherd is often cited as one of the smartest dog breeds, right after their cousin the Belgian Shepherd, also known as Malinois. Their will to please outranks. How trainable is the German Shepherd Husky mix? Well, the Husky is known to be quite independent by design. So even though pairing these two very smart dog breeds makes sense at first glance, a Shepherd Husky mix might not be as easy to train as imagined. That being said, pairing a German Shepherd with a more agreeable Husky can certainly help. Genetics and temperament of the parents always play a pretty big role. This is not always the case and even a purebred may struggle with protection without proper direction and training. Always consult a professional to avoid teaching your dog negative behavior patterns barking at strangers on walks, lunging at dogs, and so on. Huskies are incredibly enduring. How could they not, they were bred to run hundreds of miles in very cold climates. But their original working purpose was quite specific and they may need to have an outlet for this desire to run. Training your dog early on will prevent behavioral issues in the future and gets your dog used to brain training. Since both breeds are relatively high energy, you need to walk your Shepsky at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes each. The German Shepherd is known to be a formidable family dog while the Husky can be quite reserved. Huskies are used to living and working in a pack and can be very sociable animals while Shepherds develop a deep bond with their owners. Although pairing these two breeds can produce great family dogs, there are other large dog breeds that are even suitable for apartment living out there that are very patient with children and also perfect for guarding property. Grooming Both dog breeds can have relatively similar coat types. Huskies have a thick double coat, meaning an undercoat plus guard hair. It tends to affect both eyes and develops slowly. Progressive retinal atrophy: This can occur in later life and can lead to partial or complete blindness. Early symptoms can show as night blindness, dilated pupils and the inability to see clearly in bright light. Unfortunately, this condition is inherited, and it cannot be cured. If diagnosed early, however, there is a chance of saving the dog from going completely blind by using specific antioxidant supplementation. Other health problems can include digestive problems, blood disorders, bloat, and epilepsy. Finding a breeder who produces the look you are wanting in your Doodle is critical. Sizes We breed a variety of different Doodle sizes. The estimated size of your Doodle is determined by the size of both parents. Standard Doodles pounds and inches tall - This is the result of breeding a full sized Standard Poodle with an English Golden Retriever or an English Goldendoodle. Medium Doodles pounds and inches tall - We have Moyen Medium Poodles here that we breed to full sized Doodles or Retrievers. This results in a nice medium sized companion. They come in either F1, F1b or Multigen generations. Mini Doodles pounds and inches tall - This is the result of any number of combinations depending on the size of the parents. It is not possible to have an F1 Tiny Doodle because breeding the smallest Poodle possible to a full sized Golden Retriever will still give no guarantees that the puppy will be in the pound range. Tiny Doodles only come in the F1b generation at Doodle Creek. These dogs typically have low to non shedding coats. Some will have the straighter coats with a loose wave to it. These coats will sometimes be low shedding. Others will have the fleecy coats and will shed very little to nothing at all. If you are wanting strong Retriever characteristics and you are okay with possibly some shedding, this would be a great option. If you have allergies, you may want to consider the F1b or Multigen breedings. These dogs will quite often look very similar to the F1 English Goldendoodles in that many still keep that nice, fleecy coat type. The litters normally have a few with the fleecy coat types and a few with the curly coat types. The fleecy coat typed F1b puppies are typically extremely low to non shedding. The F1b is an excellent choice for those who suffer from allergies. Multigen English Goldendoodles - Through our years of experience, we have now come to the point where we use our trusted genetics and we will breed two totally unrelated Goldendoodles together. We do all the proper DNA testing to ensure that we are getting the low to non shedding offspring from these matings. We have found that the Mulitgens are just as good as the F1b for those with allergies as they are also low to non shedding. Coat types Our English Goldendoodles have several different coat types. Most are very low to non shedding. They turn into a loose curled coat as an adult and have a very soft feel. They are low to non shedding. The curly coat is similar to that of a poodle. They are typically non shedding and are wonderful for allergies. They get that beautiful, messy look to them and are very attractive looking as adults. They will often be low shedding but shed much less than a Golden Retriever. A Goldendoodle is the dog born of a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They are also known as "North American Retrievers". Why are they? These breeds have been growing in popularity since the mid's. They have what is known as "hybrid vigor". When two healthy dogs of different breeds are bred together the resulting puppies tend to be healthier more vigorous than either parent. This is because even with good breeding practices, purebred dogs are more likely to carry the same recessive genes which can lead to genetic disorders such as hip dysplasia. Also, in Goldendoodles, the combination of the calm, sweet golden retriever and the non-shedding, intelligent poodle creates what some have called the perfect dog. Combining a well bred Goldendoodle with a well bred Labradoodle also produces a wonderful, healthy dog. She weighs about 20 pounds F1 Goldendoodle Retrievers Technically a Goldendoodle crossed back to a Golden Retriever is also a Backcross Goldendoodle hybrid dog bred back to one of the parent breeds , but in the Goldendoodle world the name of F1B is reserved for Goldendoodles bred back to Poodles only not bred back to Golden Retrievers. We call the pups F1 Goldendoodle Retrievers. They are considered first generation F1 because one parent is one of the parent breeds. When we select the F1B parent for an F1 Goldendoodle Retriever litter, we select a dog with many of the coat characteristics a poodle. We select a dog whose body build and temperament are similar to a Golden Retriever. Our F1 Goldendoodle Retrievers come in two types. The first type look very similar to Golden Retrievers, but they enjoy the hybrid vigor of Goldendoodles. The second type look very similar to wavy coated F1 Goldendoodles. We have found that the F1 Goldendoodle Retrievers that resemble Golden Retrievers Retriever types are just as likely to be low to non-shedding as their F1 Goldendoodle Retriever Goldendoodle type littermates. They are medium F1 Goldendoodle Retrievers. April and Botza are their parents. They all weigh between 30 and 45 pounds. Stella and Lucy are the Retriever type of Goldendoodle Retriever. Moose is a Goldendoodle type of Goldendoodle Retriever. This cross goes back to the parent breed of Poodle, so we are able to use the "B" for backcross. The puppies from this cross will be very similar to a "regular" F1B Goldendoodle, although they may not be quite as curly and they may shed slightly more. Occasionally a litter of this generation will have both Goldendoodle type and Retriever type puppies see F1 Goldendoodle Retrievers. F2 Goldendoodles Some breeders breed two F1 Goldendoodles together. This combination is called an F2 cross and produces the most variation in coat, from a coat that looks almost completely like a Golden Retriever's, to a coat that looks almost completely like a Poodle's. Multigenerational Goldendoodles The general rule for naming generations of Goldendoodles is that a pup will be considered 1 generation higher than its parent with the lowest generation. For example an F1 crossed with an F2 would be an F2 1 generation higher than the F1 parent. If two Goldendoodles are bred together and one parent is an F1B, or a Multigen, the puppies are considered Multigenerational, or Multigens. Usually Multigenerational Goldendoodles are low to non-shedding and can have wavy or curly coats, depending on the parents. Some people with mild allergies are OK with Multigenerational Goldendoodles. An F1 litter is the first generation cross between these two breeds. Each breeding will depend on the parents we have chosen. Generally we're aiming to breed litters with excellent genetic diversity and look for complimentary characteristics in both parents to produce beautiful, healthy pups with sound temperaments which will become outstanding companion dogs. The litters we have produced have been fantastic! Casey Bear left and Kiedis right are littermates. They both weigh just under 30 pounds. As with the F1 Australian Goldendoodles, the size and color of each breeding will depend on the parent dogs. We continue to breed with good health and temperament being our primary goals. We consider them F1 because they're being bred back to a Golden Retriever. Because they have Australian Labradoodle in them, they will also have genetic material contributed from the Australian Labradoodle parent breeds listed at the top of this page. They will start not only the interaction with their litter-mates but also with their mother. We never start the weaning process during this week. While mother may come out of the whelping box during this week she will never be far. Week Four: At this age the puppies will be introduced to our own homemade puppy mush and their supplement which will help grow their immune systems. Puppies are born without an immune system and depends on their mother to supply this protection through her milk. Their body temperature will usually be around degree and they will be able to begin regulating their own body temperature. Every day they will eat more and more. The puppies will start to eat more food and move around more easily. They may even start to chase each other, bark, and bite. We still weigh them at least every other day if not every day. This is the time that the mother starts leaving the puppies at longer intervals of time and start to regulate their nursing. So this is a good time for us to introduce the puppies to the weaning box and start the weaning and potty box training. Week Five: Puppies start to establish some sort of dominance in the pack. Growth and development is rapid in this week. They become very aware of their surroundings and respond quickly to training. They begin to growl, play, challenge, and learn disciple from their mother. They also develop a bit of a competitive spirit. Training ability is developed and puppies are ready to begin learning. They also start to discover their toys and play with them more. Keeping them stimulated is important. Puppies can start to control their need to potty and now know they need to move away from the sleeping area. Good experience with people from week 5 — 7 will play a large roll in how they will continue to interact. Week Six: By this time it is amazing to see that little puppy wake up and walk over to the potty box to eliminate. Puppies enter their socialization period by the end of the third week. However, the most critical period — age six to eight weeks — is when puppies most easily learn to accept others as part of their family pack. The integrating of the human family is so important and will effect them for the rest of their life. The puppy brain waves look of an adult dog by about the 50th day, but he is not yet programmed — that is the job of the human trainer, and the job of his mom, siblings and other canine family members. This is when the fun begins for all humans and puppies. We know how important this time is for puppy to adjust to humans and how playtime stimulates their little brains to grow smart and wise. We introduce them to the outside. We bring in more interactive toys. We introduce them to the pool, weather permitting. If outside pool is out we use the grooming bath for water play. They also learn not to bite the human hand ever! It is at the 7th week, day 49, that we conduct the Volhard Test. This is actual one of several that will occur through its life. Instead of meeting new or familiar people and objects with curiosity puppies start to react with fearfulness. Anything that frightens them at this age may have a lasting impact. So take care that the baby is not overstimulated with to many changes or challenges at one time. This does not mean that your puppy will grow up to be a scared-y-cat; it is simply a normal part of development where puppies learn to be more cautious. Careful socialization during this period helps counter fear reactions. Because your puppy is actively working on social skills and is paying attention to both litter-mates and humans. Your puppy is learning at an extremely fast rate. This is why we will NOT hold any puppy beyond the 9th weeks. All puppies that cannot be picked up during puppy pickup week must enter their puppy into a training program. Weeks Thirteen — Sixteen: During this phase a puppy will attempt to challenge you for dominance. Here is where they test to see just how much they can get away with and test your level of tolerance. The more a puppy is allowed to get way with during this phase, may cause the dog to lose more and more respect for his owner. This may result in behavioral issues that can snowball if not corrected through training and obedience. Formal obedience should begin here. This will assist the dog in becoming the best he can be. This is the time your puppy will begin to understand and use ranking in terms of submission and dominance. Are you the owner going to be a good pack leader? Puppies will need to be taught what they can and cannot chew. Puppies need to be taught that it is never acceptable behavior to jump on a human, small or big. This is the time that the pack leader, the human in charge, especially needs to be confident, but firm with positive reinforcement. An obedient dog, a good canine citizen, is a pleasure to be with. A disobedient dog causes stress for all and can cause damage to things and other humans. What do I mean by that? The canine depends on a human, however, he is and his thinking is canine. He needs the human to communicate and set the standards for him. If the human does not then the dog will have no choice but set his own standards, doggy style. Be prepared to be a Good, very good, pack leader! Your puppy now understands that he has a pack which may consist of both humans and canine and his behavior will be most influenced by this group. You can expect your dog to challenge you more as he explores dominance and his role in the pack. Rather they are just working out what their rank is in the pack and what is expected of them in their position. Again: be a Good, very good, pack leader! Canines that are not spayed or neutered will also start exhibiting sexual behavior during this period. Be responsible and spay or neuter you canine. Some puppy owners hire a canine trainer to come to their home to teach them how to train. Some owners learn ahead of time what they need to do and immediately begin their puppy on this program. Raising Puppies at Three Weeks Old Sassy the English Mastiff At three weeks old, the pups are wormed with a mild wormer they were also wormed at two weeks. Giant breed dogs are up and walking at 3 weeks old and can be started on food. Medium breeds can start food at 3. Toy breed dogs on the other hand cannot have food yet as they can asperate. Toy breeds cannot start food before 4 weeks of age, 4. Soaked kibble is best for pups this age. In this particular case the pups were not being cared for by the dam and were given mush. It turned out to be a little too early, but it was worth a try considering the circumstances. Feeding mush is Not needed and NOT advised, unless you have a litter you need to wean early, because the mom is not tending to them. Or if the mom dried up early or you are fostering a litter, or the litter size is just to large for mom to comfortably tend to you can feed them mush, but otherwise it is not something that is recommended and is considered old school breeding. Feeding puppies blended up food before they are ready will equal this. Puppies covered in food. They walk in it and get it all over their faces and do a face plant in it. Last year I know of two puppies that died at 3. At 3 to 5 weeks, depending on your dog's breed size, take good quality puppy kibble and soak it 2 parts water and 1 part kibble. Some kibble needs more water than others. The kibble will hold it's shape and soak up the water. You want to use as much water as you can and have the kibble pieces swell up and go very soft. Give the food to the puppies in their eating area, not in their potty area or their play area. The puppies will be able to pick up a piece of soaked kibble and eat it. If they are not ready to do this they are not ready to eat solid food. A dam will often let you know it is time to start feeding the pups solid food when you see her regurgitate her kibble for them. It is a sure sign that soaked kibble is what you should be feeding them. Listen to the dam's instincts. I find if I try to wait until 5 weeks to add solid food to their diet, the dam will beat me to it the day or two before. This confirms that the timing was right on. It was a feeding frenzy.I obviously have to feed in shifts, maybe using two bowls. They dove in and swam; they were more interested in swimming around in the food, and then licking it off of each other. Tips greatly welcomed.At 3 weeks or when the pups start walking and about the time you make a small potty area outside the whelp box add a shallow bowl of water. Pups need to learn to lap water first from a bowl. See house training puppies with the Misty Method. In most breeds, if done correctly, this is at weeks. Then when you add food, pups sometimes get a little or large piece of poop on their rear ends stuck like glue that will NOT come off called will-knots or dingleberries. This can also lead to death, as we also see every year. You need to check each pups butt every 12 hours. A pup last year went to bed with a plugged butt and strained all night, and blew out the sidewall of his bowel. Don't let a puppy suck on your chin, not even for ten seconds. Tonight I added water with Pablum to the bottle. At three and a half weeks, feeding is much neater. This little pup is thoroughly enjoying his dinner, every last morsel! Bred in the highlands of Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth in the mid to late s, Goldens are a cross between a Yellow Retriever and an extinct dog breed, the Tweed Water Spaniel. Lord Tweedmouth wanted the ideal gundog to accompany him during fowl hunting and be able to withstand the rugged terrain and rainy conditions. Aside from being able to retrieve fowl, Lord Tweedmouth wanted an even-tempered dog to have at home when not hunting. And so, the Golden Retriever was born. Later in the s, they soon became a popular breed amongst American families when President Gerald Ford had a Golden named Liberty as his family dog. Golden Retrievers, like their name states, are golden! Their luxurious coats come in a variety of light to dark shades, ranging from light like the white Golden Retriever or English Cream to dark golden colors, even close to chocolate. Their coats feature feathering down their backs, chest, belly, hindquarters, and tails. Goldens have soft expressions combined with floppy expressive ears that give them a puppy-like appearance even as adults. Another thing to note of the Golden Retriever is that those fluffy coats are actually what are known as double coats. A strong water repellant coat on top coupled with a dense undercoat to regulate their body heat. This all means these pups can be heavy shedders! What are Golden Retrievers Personalities like? There is something to be said about being named a perfect family dog. The Golden Retriever breed is loyal, affectionate, playful, and gentle. They generally have happy go lucky demeanors which lends itself to affection and friendliness, including toward strangers. If you wanted a pup that could eventually become a service dog, a Golden Retriever is a great choice and make for excellent working pups! As a high-energy breed, Golden Retrievers do best in a home that will provide them ample access to romp around. Homes with fenced in yards or access to a park or field on a daily basis where they can run and fetch to their hearts content are the best environment for Goldens! These pups, with consistent early socialization, can adapt and thrive to living in a home with other dogs, or pets, and children! They love to play and make great playmates. That being said, their social nature can lead to dependencies on their owners and family. Golden Retrievers may develop separation anxiety if left alone and not properly trained from an early age. Take advantage of that natural drive and eagerness to please by setting foundations at home. Start your puppy a regular daily puppy schedule to create structured routines in the home. Include consistent feeding, nap, play and obedience training times throughout the day to help your Golden pup learn what to expect and build confidence at home. For Golden Retrievers, this is because they can have short legs in proportion to their body and a tendency to become overweight. Eye problems — screening tests are available and dogs should be screened on a yearly basis, especially if intended for breeding. Multifocal retinal dysplasia - abnormal development and growth of the back of the eye retina which can lead to blindness. Generalised progressive retinal atrophy GPRA — slowly leads to progressive blindness over months or years. Retinal pigment epithelial dystrophy RPED, or central progressive retinal atrophy — a genetic problem which causes issues in the back of the eye retina and loss of vision. Glaucoma — high pressure within the eye causing pain and loss of vision. Ichthyosis — a skin disease that causes thickening of the footpads and makes other areas of skin rough and covered with thick, greasy flakes that stick to the hair. Caring for your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers are usually real big softies and can make a great addition to a home. How much noise they make will be down to the individual dog. Training and socialisation Golden Retrievers thrive off training and are very intelligent dogs. They love nothing more than to be given tasks to do to keep them occupied and have fairly good problem-solving skills — for a dog! As long as your Retriever is properly socialised from a young age , they should be confident around new people and situations. Retrievers also like their chill out time but will be more than happy to show you plenty of affection on their own terms. Exercise Golden Retrievers are very active dogs and need plenty of opportunities to exercise , play and get rid of excess energy. Your Golden Retriever will need a minimum of two hours of good exercise per day. You can find out how much exercise your dog needs , or even find exercises you can do together. Because they are intelligent dogs, Golden Retrievers can get bored easily so make sure you keep their brains active as well as their bodies. As their name suggests, retrieving is what they were bred for, so nearly all Golden Retrievers love a good game of fetch! Grooming Golden Retrievers have medium to long coats and generally do shed a lot. They are not a dog to take on if you hate hoovering! Ideally, they should be brushed or combed three times a week at a minimum. Where necessary you can trim their coat with the right tools, but seek advice from a professional dog groomer or vet first. You may also find that your Retriever loves water including any and all muddy puddles and swimming. Make sure they stay safe around the water and if they get mucky, use a dog safe shampoo. Obesity can cause other health problems for your Golden Retriever, so keeping them in shape is extra important. Make sure to monitor their weight and keep an eye out for any sneaky snacking. Your vet will be able to tell you how much your dog should be eating. If you give your dog an occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily food allowance. Use healthy treats in moderation instead. You should try to feed your dog at the same time every day to get them into a routine. Remember to leave a gap before exercising and after eating. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will neuter any dogs they rehome, saving you this cost. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or damage or if your dog outgrows or damages them! Ongoing costs Food.
