How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Put the bed somewhere you can see so you can always keep an eye for your pet. Your pet should have his food and water bowls. It would be best to have a customized food and water bowls intended for your pet. Always have it available at a scheduled time. It will also train your pup to eat in a planned manner. Provide toys for your pet to chew. All puppies and dogs like to chew, so be sure to have a toy ready for your pup to chew. It will also prevent your pup from chewing on appliances and furniture. Provide a suitable collar and leash for it. It would save you the effort to purchase or look for one when you want to walk your pup. Try to ask your vet for grooming products you can use for your bulldog puppy. Keep in contact with your veterinarian. Puppies are always playful, so be sure to avoid having access to items that can be dangerous for them. Keep furniture with sharp edges away from your puppy, and remove items that are prone to falling. Always have your yard and fence secured to prevent your pup from running away. Look for small openings and cover it. It will help you prevent your puppy from going out and disappearing. Is not someone who has a puppy mill. It means they should breed only one or two kinds and do not breed only to sell it immediately. Will not have a litter of pups always ready for you. Hes mellow, smart a huge :. We couldnt be happier with him and with Ary. Ary is always available to help answer questions of give advise and loves to keep up with his pups as they grow and beyond. In researching, we found Ary and the Olde English breed and could not be happier with the decision to get Bruce. Ary was incredible throughout the process, explaining everything we needed to know about the breed and the process of importing him into Hong Kong. He checked in with us several times before the flight and was in constant contact via text when we went to the airport to pick up Bruce, who arrived a little skeptical of his new surroundings but perfectly healthy and happy. The extent to which Ary cares about every one of the amazing dogs he sells is clear through his attention to detail and willingness to put in any extra effort to make sure his puppies get to, and stay in, good homes. He took to his kennel training and potty training so fast! In searching for our puppy, we did our due diligence researching online and then visiting your property in person. I was impressed with how happy and healthy all of your dogs are. I also enjoyed getting the opportunity to meet the parents of our puppy; they both seemed to have great termperments. Thanks for a wonderful puppy! Lauren W. I recently adopted her from Ary, and it was great! Ary is so devoted to all of his dogs, he even knows them by their bark! His property is a dog haven, dog runs, kiddie pools, and toys for days! He truly loves what he does. When I heard that Ary had rescued a litter of puppies i had to take a look! It is formulated for sensitive skin, which is great for dogs with allergies and other sensitivities. Dog conditioner Want a soft, luxurious coat for your dog? Why not get a special conditioner for dogs? It conditions well, washes out easily, and does not weigh hair down. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own. Coat Type And Condition Labradors have a unique double coat consisting of a dense, soft undercoat that insulates them from cold weather and an outer water-resistant layer. This distinctive fur requires specialized care to maintain its health. One common issue among Labrador retrievers is shedding — they are notorious shedders! Regular grooming , including brushing and bathing with the right shampoo, can help manage this problem. For example, some shampoos, like Labs, are designed for breeds with double coats. These can penetrate both layers for thorough cleansing without stripping away natural oils. Besides keeping their coat looking sleek and shiny, using such products may reduce shedding by removing loose excess hair during bath time. If they have dry or itchy skin, opt for hypoallergenic or oatmeal-based formulas, which are gentle on sensitive skin. Skin Sensitivity Or Allergies This is quite common for this breed. Like humans, dogs can react adversely to certain ingredients found in shampoos. Consider hypoallergenic dog shampoos with aloe vera or oatmeal to minimize the risk. Oatmeal shampoo is an excellent option as it helps soothe dry skin while relieving inflammation caused by allergies. Remember that not all dog shampoos are created equal. Some contain chemicals or artificial fragrances, which could exacerbate or create new sensitivities. Look for dog shampoos containing ingredients like neem, cedarwood, or rosemary extract, known to repel fleas and ticks. Some shampoos also include topical flea treatments built-in, which provide an extra layer of protection against these pesky parasites. However, they may not completely eliminate them if your dog already has an infestation. Use additional flea and tick treatments as your veterinarian recommends in those cases. Go only for natural ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal, almond oil, or aloe vera-based dog shampoos with no chemical dyes or fragrances. Factors such as coat type and condition, skin sensitivity or allergies, and parasite prevention should be considered. For example, if your dog has itchy skin, y opt for a natural oatmeal shampoo that soothes irritated skin. Another thing to remember when selecting the right shampoo for your Lab is their age. Puppies require gentler tear-free shampoos, while adult dogs may benefit from shampoos that contain nourishing oils like coconut. Look for shampoos made with all-natural ingredients such as aloe vera, oatmeal, and essential oils like mint or coconut oil. Chemicals in some shampoos can exacerbate skin conditions like dryness or itching. Before choosing the best shampoo for your Labrador, consult with your veterinarian. They can also advise on any special requirements or allergies that must be considered when selecting a pet shampoo. Additionally, if other shampoos have caused an allergic reaction, your vet may suggest switching to a hypoallergenic dog shampoo like Earthbath Hypo-Allergenic Dog Shampoo. Do Labradors need a special shampoo? Labradors have sensitive skin, which makes them prone to skin allergies and infections. Therefore, it is best to use a specially formulated shampoo designed for dogs with sensitive skin. Mild, soap-free, hypoallergenic shampoo can help prevent skin irritation and allergies. How often should a Labrador be bathed? Bathe your Labrador once monthly or once every months. Overbathing can strip their coat of natural oils and lead to dry, itchy skin. Do Labradors need shampoo and conditioner? No, it is not necessary, but it keeps the coat soft and shiny. If you choose to use a conditioner, make sure it is specifically designed for dogs and is free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances. What do Labradors love the most? Labradors are known for their love of food and playtime. They also love spending time with their owners and going for walks or runs. Can I bathe my Labrador every day? No, it is not recommended to bathe your Labrador every day. How do I dry my Labrador after a bath? After bathing your Labrador, gently towel dry its coat and use a hairdryer on a low setting to finish drying its coat. Ensure not to use high heat, which can damage their skin and coat. Why do dogs lick you? Dogs lick their owners as a way of showing affection and love. It is also natural for dogs to lick themselves and others to clean themselves or show submission. Do dogs feel better after a bath? Yes, dogs can feel better after a bath, especially if they have been itching or have a skin condition. Bathing can help soothe their skin and relieve any discomfort. Do dogs like warm or cold baths? Most dogs prefer warm bath s, as cold water can be uncomfortable. However, ensure the water is not too hot, which can burn their skin. Is it OK to feed a dog once a day? Feed adult dogs twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. However, the feeding frequency can vary depending on age, health, and activity level. What Is Anti Shedding Shampoo? It typically contains ingredients that help to loosen the dead hair and make it easier to brush out. Here are some ways to deshed your dog at home: Brush your dog regularly. This is the most important thing you can do to control shedding. Brushing helps to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils throughout the coat, which can help to prevent matting and tangles. Use a deshedding tool. Various deshedding tools are available, such as a Furminator or a shedding rake. These tools can help to remove even more loose hair than brushing alone. Bathe your dog regularly. Bathing your dog helps to remove dirt, debris, and loose hair. Feed your dog a healthy diet. Consider using supplements. Several supplements can help to reduce shedding, such as omega-3 fatty acids and biotin. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best way to stop your dog from shedding so fast will vary depending on the individual dog. However, some things you can try include: Brushing your dog regularly. This one-stop shop shampoo and conditioner is from the renowned Earthbath who make great all natural pet products. Ingredients: The Mango-Tango is made up of purified water alongside a variety of plant-derived cleansers and conditioners. It contains aloe vera, Vitamins A, B, D and E, as well as glycerine, natural preservatives and mango essence. The mango scent is really refreshing. It lathers and rinses out easily. Why we recommend it: Again, you can always feel confident with Earthbath products and that you are using all-natural ingredients and there is nothing in the formula that might be harmful to your dog. And it still works! Why Use Dog Shampoo Products? There are 2 major reasons to avoid using human shampoo on your dog: Skin pH levels: Human shampoo tends to be marginally acidic in order to best clean our skin, which has a pH somewhere between 5. Dogs, on the other hand, have an alkaline skin pH of up to 7. Sensitive skin: Dogs are generally much more sensitive than humans as their skin only has between layers, in comparison to humans with layers. As such, our skin can take more of a battering from harsh products and chemicals while your dog will be more easily irritated. Such irritation leads to dryness, scratching and abrasions. If you do have to bathe your dog with human products — perhaps in a particularly smelly emergency with no pet products at hand — try to opt for mild formulations used on babies and children. This means asking what kind of coat they have, and what kind of additional care their skin and coat might need. Do they have a short coat, long coat, a double coat? Is it dry or oily? Dogs with short coats often just need a shampoo, while long hair and double coats benefit from conditioner to help with detangling and repair after brushing. But at the same time, if your dog has an oily coat, you will want to skip the conditioner as it will just exacerbate the problem. How is their skin? Is it sensitive, prone to allergies, already red and sore due to other problems? If your dog has sensitive skin, you are going to want to avoid products that may exacerbate the problem and maybe go for a hypoallergenic shampoo. You may also want to look for products with soothing ingredients for the skin, such as oatmeal or Aloe Vera. You may then also want to look for products that might help with any ongoing issues your pup has. Do they shed a lot? Some shampoos can help with that. Do they often get fleas? You can get shampoos that also have repelling qualities. Do they have a particular problem with body odor? There are shampoos out there that specialize in deodorizing. For an overview of Labrador grooming needs, check out our complete guide. Once you determine what kind of shampoo you need, you can then look at the products themselves. There are a few key characteristics to look out for. Characteristics Of Good Dog Shampoos And Conditioners pH Level The skin and hair of dogs have a neutral pH level, and so as not to cause damage to their coat, their shampoo and conditioner should also have a neutral pH. Look for shampoos that have a pH level near 7, which is neutral. For that reason, good dog shampoos should work to neutralize odors rather than simply mask smells with fragrances. You will know if your dog is not a fan of the smell of their shampoo or conditioner if they like to rub against things a lot after bathing. This is them trying to rub off the unwelcome smell. Natural Ingredients Just as it is true for humans, harsh chemicals absorbed through the skin can harm dogs. Dangerous chemicals should be avoided by choosing products made from all-natural ingredients. Key ingredients to avoid include phthalates, formaldehyde, isothiazolinones, and nitrosamines. Skin-Protecting Additives Just as you can buy shampoos and skin cleansers that promise to hydrate your skin and keep it looking fresh, dog shampoos will often include skin-protecting additives such as oatmeal, Aloe Vera, or vitamin E that is designed to moisturize skin and keep coats shiny. Medicated Shampoos If your dog has specific skin conditions, there may be a shampoo out there specially formulated to help. Identifying these usually requires consultation with your vet. Look out for shampoos that can help with parasitic or fungal infections, skin allergies, or seborrhea. Medicated shampoos are much more likely to include unnatural ingredients than standard shampoos, for good reason. They need these ingredients to do their job effectively. But there are a few ingredients to be wary of in particular, avoid anything that contains alcohol, as it can sting the skin and eyes. If you are looking for a medicated shampoo for fleas, check out our list of the seven best dog flea shampoos. The open hair follicles can also allow oils to escape and let contaminants enter the follicle, again, compromising their strength and integrity. Conditioner seals the hair follicles, locking in oils and protecting the hair from breakages. But whether your dog really needs conditioner depends on their coat. However, it is probably best to avoid conditioners for dogs with oily coats, as it can just make them even more oily and unpleasant to touch. Dogs with long coats and double coats that require a lot of grooming benefit from the use of a conditioner. When choosing a conditioner, you should look for similar characteristics to a shampoo: Neutral pH balance All-natural ingredients and no chemicals or additives Fragrance-free or only lightly fragranced. Bathing Your Dog Bath time with your four-legged friend is not just about choosing the right product; it is also about using it correctly. This means washing your dog with the correct frequency and in just the right way. How often you need to bathe your dog will vary from breed to breed and also depends on their individual lifestyle and habits. If your dog gets smelly in between full shampoo baths, opt for a simple plain water rinse in between. Dogs that spend more time indoors and rarely get dirty will require less regular baths. Depending on how smelly they get, a bath somewhere between every 2 to 3 months would be about right. Double-coated breeds, such as Labs, should really only be bathed every three months — or even less often — unless they get particularly smelly. Their oily double coats will dry out from too much shampooing, depleting the insulating, protective properties and waterproofing their coat has. Just as with humans, shampooing too often has a tendency to dry out the skin and hair, leading to irritation, scratching and in extreme cases maybe even lesions. The best way to prolong time between baths and keep your dog looking healthy and clean is to commit to a daily brushing schedule. Unlike humans who breathe in allergens, dogs absorb them through their skin. This can lead to irritation, scratching and eventually — in extreme cases — lesions. Tips For How to Bathe Your Dog You could just carelessly bundle your pooch into the bath, get them wet, lather, rinse and repeat. But of course, the best results come with a little planning. Before bathing, brush your dog to remove any tangles and debris caught in their hair. Prepare the room for bath time by assembling products ready to use, laying down towels or waterproof sheets and keeping treats on hand to reward good behavior. If they need to be restrained, use a muzzle or a specialist bathing tether. Introduce them to the water slowly by spraying their backs first and keeping the power on low, allowing them to get used to the sensation. Use a soft brush in the direction of hair growth to best lather in the shampoo and avoid any tangles. Use the brush again to gently clean the paw pads. Rinse thoroughly by wetting the head and face first before working your way down the rest of their body. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear. At this point, some owners choose to use a specialist dog conditioner to seal the hair cuticle and keep the coat shiny and full of moisture. Once all shampoo and conditioners have been washed out, lift your dog out of the bath and wrap them in an absorbent towel. Avoid rubbing them dry as this can tangle their hair; blot the coat instead. They will probably want to shake themselves dry too. Make sure your dog stays in the warm until they are completely dry. The best shampoo and conditioner for your dog depends on the type of coat and skin that they have. For example, short-haired dogs with a relatively oily coat will do best with a standard shampoo, while dogs with long hair that needs a lot of brushing benefit from a conditioner. Dogs with sensitive skin can benefit from a hypoallergenic formula, while dogs that spend a lot of time in the great outdoors need a heavy-duty formula. But whichever shampoo you go for, try to choose something all natural that does not include any chemicals or additives that might hurt your dog. Earthbath does a wide range of shampoos and conditioners made from all-natural ingredients. They are gentle products ideal for most dogs, but you might want something stronger when dealing with a very dirty pooch. This is because the pH level of human hair and skin and dog skin and hair is different. Dogs are neutral while humans are acidic. This is why it is better to use a special dog shampoo, which has a neutral pH ideal for dogs. While it is preferable to use dog shampoo on dogs rather than any variety of human shampoo, baby shampoo is safe for dogs. It is fine to use human shampoo on your dog as a one-off, though make sure it does not get into their eyes. How often you should wash your dog depends on both their breed and their lifestyle. Dogs with longer hair are more likely to trap dirt and debris in their coat, and outdoor dogs need bathing more often than indoor dogs. As a general rule of thumb, consider bathing your dog every four to six weeks. It is only necessary to use a small amount of shampoo when bathing your dog, as the lathering effect allows it to expand and cover your dog completely. If you use excess shampoo, it can be difficult to thoroughly rinse. Exactly how much depends on the size of your dog and the thickness of their coat. Start with a small amount and add more as needed. Final Thoughts While the right shampoo and conditioner for your dog depends on them — their breed, type of coat, skin condition, and sensitivities — just remember that the right shampoo for them is not your shampoo! Dogs have very different needs, which is why they have their own products. It can also be nice to choose something that contains natural skin-soothing products such as oatmeal and Aloe Vera. All of their products are all-natural and designed to be gentle enough for frequent use. Our favorite dog shampoo is Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe , which is fragrance-free, lathers easily, and combines finely ground oatmeal with organic aloe vera for nutrient-rich skin treatment. But we identified several other shampoos that might be more suitable for your dog's skin and coat. Our Top Picks. Due to this, it was reasonably easy for us to find several great shampoos on the market that are perfect for Labrador Retrievers. Most good dog shampoos control shedding to some extent, so we had a wide range to pick from. However, we did manage to come to a conclusion. This excellent shampoo is no different from any of their others in terms of quality. This is a 2 in 1 product that also conditions while it cleans — which is great news for our Labrador Retrievers and their tendency to shed. A lovely addition to this product is lavender, which is a natural soothing agent that creates a calming therapeutic effect via aromatherapy. No expense has been spared here, and one of the most effective and powerful yet gentle natural cleansers on the planet provide the bulk of the cleaning power in this product — lemongrass. The huge lemongrass infusion in this formula demolishes any bacteria that are currently residing on your pooch which is what causes them to stink and leaves them fresher and cleaner than ever. Again, this is a 2 in 1 shampoo that contains a conditioner in the formula. Either way, this is an excellent product that is more than worthy of your consideration. This is a super gentle formula that has been created specifically to cater to the needs of younger pups. Despite being gentle and tearless, this is an effective 4 in 1 shampoo that cleans, conditions, nourishes, and protects against pests all at the same time. We assume this is because the compounds that are used in other deshedding formulas are incompatible with the tearless nature of this product. Start your puppy on this, and when they get a little older — transition to one of the adult recommendations on this page instead. FURminator DeShedding Ultra Premium Shampoo For Dogs As you might have guessed from the title, this is a product that has been designed specifically to deal with dogs that are causing their owners issues with shedding. The soap-free and alcohol-free formula gets its cleaning power from oatmeal, and the honey in the formula is excellent at promoting a healthy coat and will also provide a little bit of help in the shedding department but not as much as the two recommendations above. It might not have the bells and whistles of some of the other shampoos we have talked about today — but it gets the job done without breaking the bank. The huge amount of hair on a Labrador Retriever traps water and soap more than other single coated or short-haired breeds. Dog shampoo is not meant to be left on your pooch after the bathing session is over — all of it needs to be removed. You should be super careful when rinsing your Labrador Retriever to ensure that you get every single last drop of shampoo off of them before you take them out of the bath. Go over your pooch once with water like normal, and then give them a second quicker rinse to get any shampoo that managed to avoid your rinsing efforts the first time around. Give them a really good brushing before putting them in the tub and remember to give them a quick brush after bathing too. Get Everything Ready Before Bathing Our Labrador Retrievers are perhaps one of the few breeds of dog that have a reasonable chance of enjoying bath time. Labrador Retrievers can often see it as a fun experience instead of something stressful that needs to be endured. A super excitable soaking wet dog running around your home while you go and grab something from the other room is going to ruin your day, to say the least. The combination of a super smooth ceramic surface combined with a healthy dose of hot soapy water makes an already slippery situation even worse. This is one of the most common misconceptions we hear about Labrador Retrievers. Some people claim that black Labrador Retrievers shed less than chocolate or yellow Labrador Retrievers or the other way around. The myth seems to come from owners that have had more than one Labrador Retriever in their household at the same time. We suspect that they have noticed more hair from one their dogs than the other and as such the claim that different colored Labrador Retrievers shed different amounts. There is no real-world evidence whatsoever to back this claim up. However, you should never use a normal human hairdryer with a Labrador Retriever or any breed for that matter. Conclusion So there you have it, that concludes our review into the best Labrador Retriever shampoos on the market right now. Sean Green Pet. Character: The English Bulldog is affectionate, uncomplicated, gentle, intelligent, sensitive, and fearless. It is known for its loyalty; its happy-go-lucky attitude is in sharp contrast to its sour face. English Bulldogs are active, alert, and playful, but not unduly boisterous. Temperament: English Bulldogs enjoy mixing with other dogs and household pets. They are great with children, well behaved, adaptable, comfortable companions with an affectionate nature and even disposition. Some English Bulldogs are cautious with strangers, but most are friendly to everyone. They are likely to drool or snore. Care: When the English Bulldog is shedding, use a rubber brush to remove dead hairs. A special lotion will occasionally need to be applied to the facial and tail folds to keep them clean; soft tooth brushing with an approved toothpaste is also recommended. The English Bulldog has a lifespan of years. Due to its facial features, it is susceptible to breathing problems and skin infections, and many are delivered via Caesarean section due to their large heads. Most English Bulldogs cannot swim and are averse to hot weather. Training: Consistency is important, but the English Bulldog is highly sensitive to the tone of its handler's voice, making training a fairly simple process. It is inquisitive and quick to learn simple tasks, yet unpredictable as it is a bit stubborn on occasion. Activity: The exercise needs of the English Bulldog are uncomplicated. It will adapt itself to the activity level of your family. Sufficient rest is key to development of healthy bones, muscles, and joints—do not expect your English Bulldog to run long distances or jump down from tall ledges. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. We have answers. You could take them for a few short walks instead, and make sure you put some time aside to play back at home too! What are the characteristics of French Bulldogs? They grow from a cute little puppy to approximately ten to eleven inches tall and generally can weigh from fourteen to eighteen pounds once they are full grown. Although they are a petite breed, pugs are also stout little pooches, making them less fragile than other similar breeds.
They are almost square in appearance, with a strong body and sturdy legs. The maximum height for a male is 24 inches, which puts them in the medium-size dog category, but their sturdy build can make them seem much larger. Weights range from 85 pounds for a large male to 55 pounds for a smaller female. Field line bred dogs are often taller and somewhat thinner in build. Labrador retrievers are easily recognized by their broad head, drop ears and large, expressive eyes. Two trademarks of the Lab are the thick but fairly short double coat, which is very water repellent, and the well known "otter tail. The feet are described as "webbed," with longer skin between the toes to aid in swimming. The Labrador retriever is a moderately fast maturing breed, reaching adult height from six to 12 months, but possibly still filling out up to 2 years of age. Many Labs reach 12 to 14 years of age. Personality: In general, Labrador retrievers are excellent family dogs, as long as you keep in mind their need for exercise and training. These are dogs bred to work and work hard and they love to have jobs to do, particularly retrieving. Labs are usually good with other dogs, other pets, and children as long as training has toned down their natural exuberance. They are strong dogs and need some obedience training at an early age or they can be seen dragging their owners down the street at will. Owing to their energetic nature, Labradors who are left alone or not well exercised can become destructive — chewing, digging and barking to excess. The field line dogs are especially high-energy dogs, while some of the show line dogs become perfect couch potatoes at an early age. Chewing can be a problem because the strong retrieve urge gives them an oral fixation. Sturdy chew toys, exercise and training all help with this. Living With: Obviously, Labradors have a number of endearing traits or they would not be so popular. They are intelligent and fairly easy to train, partly from their desire to work with people. They are "easy keepers" and can become overweight if they are not exercised and food portions adjusted as needed. Labs are excellent family dogs because they do want to be with people and many do not do well as kennel dogs. Labradors do tend to be protective of their families and homes but are usually happy to greet company, too. With the strong retrieving instinct, they can develop into destructive chewers if not given appropriate toys and guidance. Labs may tend to "mouth" people and the solution is often simply to give them a toy to carry around, so their mouths are already full! These are very strong dogs and early training is necessary to have a dog that walks nicely on lead. The wonderful double coat that keeps the Labrador warm while retrieving in icy water also gives this breed top billing as shedders. Normally, their coats do fine with a quick weekly grooming, but at shedding time daily grooming is needed. The amount of exercise they need varies with the different lines: field line dogs can run all day, whereas show line dogs only need moderate exercise. History: Early in the s, some of the multipurpose dogs used in North America mostly Canada by hunters were shipped back to England. Many of these "water dogs" were of the Newfoundland type, but the smaller ones were often designated "St John's" dogs. In England, the breed was developed and refined probably with some flat-coated retriever input into the breed we recognize today. As is evidenced by their name, Labrador retrievers were bred and selected for their outstanding retrieving abilities, particularly in water. They have worked as partners with duck hunters in all kinds of weather and conditions. Their intelligence and desire to work as a partner with man has led to many other jobs, and to their current status as popular pets. Today, Labradors excel as service and guide dogs, family pets, scenting dogs for the military, customs and arson task force dogs, search and rescue dogs as well as hunting companions and performance dogs. The breed's good nature has propelled it to the number one ranking in popularity in America, a position it intends to keep. Despite their fame as indoor pets, they are even more at home outdoors. It should always be remembered that Labradors are water retrievers at heart and from early on, puppies show a strong desire to carry things around with them and a strong attraction to water, even puddles! Related Pet Care Articles. Conclusion About the Breed You must have seen at least one Labrador Retriever for real because they are the most commonly owned dogs in America. Labrador Retrievers come with huge hearts, which may contain an immense amount of love for all the family members. Due to the very same reason, this dog is being used as a therapy dog in old age homes and hospitals. Since they are easy to train and understand commands really very quickly, this breed has won various agility and obedience competitions. Besides, they have served the military and police forces for a long time as rescue dogs and for drug and explosive detection. And have we mentioned their extraordinary performance as assistance dogs for disabled people? All in all, this single dog offers a one-in-all sort of package to its owner as with their versatile and colorful personality, they can transform, from a companion dog to a show dog to a rescue dog to a field retriever, in a wink. The Labrador Retriever club has confirmed that this dog breed originated in St. John, the capital city of Newfoundland, Canada. By , these St. These dogs help their owners retrieve the lost fish and ducks, haul fishing nets, and fetch ropes. Although the lineage of St. In around , the second Earl of Malmesbury brought these dogs to England to be used as retrievers whereas, in the reign of the Third Earl of Malmesbury, these dogs began to get referred to as Labradors. When this dog breed was thriving in England, it nearly got extinct in Newfoundland around the year .The reason behind this near-extinction situation was the strict tax laws and government restrictions. The government of those times even constituted a law that one family could keep only one pet dog, and if they chose that pet to be female, the family had to pay a heavy dog tax. Still, somehow, the breed managed to survive and in , the kennel club officially recognized it as a separate breed. On the other hand, the American kennel club AKC recognized this popular breed in .Since the count of Labrador Retrievers was still alarmingly low in America and Canada, the breeders over there began to import British Labs to their countries. After these untiring efforts, Labrador Retriever dogs finally got categorized as the most popular dog breed by the national breed club of America, by the end of world war ii, in .However, Adjutant, the oldest living Labrador, managed to live for about 27 years. Therefore, a Lab puppy should never be allowed to go outside when the temperature is above ninety degrees Fahrenheit. A Labrador can hold its pee for about hours so you better schedule their bathroom breaks accordingly. Labrador is one of those few dog breeds that communicate through their body language rather than barks and growls. If a Labrador loves you, it will express it with its wagging tail, licking, and following you everywhere around. Unlike other dogs, this Lab breed can sense your sadness by reading your facial expressions and change in your pointing gestures. The best age to bring Lab puppies to your home is when it gets eight weeks old. Research has shown that the Labradors have tendencies and enough emotions to hold grudges. They remember past events quite clearly and can throw tantrums for some time. Even though it happens once in a blue moon, a Labrador Retriever can bite with a strength of about PSI. Labrador Retriever Appearance When it comes to appearance, Labradors are divided into two major categories; one containing thicker, blocker, and heavier bodies called the English Labradors and the second containing lankier and taller dogs called the American Labradors. Generally, all these deep-chested dogs feature sturdy and squared body frames, supported by athletic legs. Size The height of a fully grown Labrador Retriever depends upon its gender as males are mostly taller than females. Generally, a male Lab may grow up to cm tall, whereas the size of a female Lab could be cm. Considering the maximum size to which a male Labrador Retriever could grow, these strong dogs are classified in the category of medium-sized dogs. Weight Again, based on sex, the healthy weight range of a Labrador may vary. Generally, a 6-month-old, male Lab may weigh around kgs, whereas the weight of a female Lab could be between kgs. However, some Labs may even put on an extra weight of about 45 kg due to their uncontrolled greediness and appetites. Coat Labrador Retrievers are also special when it comes to their coat type. They feature a hard, dense, and thick double coat that consists of both hair and fur. The outer coat comprises wiry, short, and dense hair, whereas the undercoat consists of soft and smooth fur which is weather-resistant and insulating. Besides, some Labradors also look big and fluffy as they have long hair on their bodies. This condition is quite rare and caused by a non-dominant, recessive gene. Likewise, some Labradors come with a sparse undercoat which makes them look like single-coated canines. Color Labrador Retrievers are divided into three major types as per the coat color; chocolate brown, black, and yellow. The most dominant and common breed type is the one comprising black Labrador. Besides these common colors, some Labs also feature silver, fox red, and polar white, but these options are super rare. In addition to this, many Labs come with some white markings or small patches on their chests that are acceptable. However, any Lab that possesses coat color other than what is mentioned above, is considered mixed bred canine. Labrador Retriever Temperament and Personality Speaking of their temperament, they are fun to be around since they are light-hearted, playful, emotional, and smart. Since their bodies contain a huge amount of pent-up energy, these dogs are the happiest when busy. You can leave a Labrador Retriever alone at home for hours. Just make sure they have easy access to the bathroom and someone who could feed them after some hours. Even though Labs can do well on their own for some hours, but make sure to compensate for those absenting hours by playing with them. Remember that an ignored and bored Lab may develop separation anxiety really quickly. And as we stated before, they are more emotional than other dogs, their damaged emotional health can also have adverse effects on their mental and physical health. After developing separation anxiety, a Labrador Retriever may exhibit anxious behavior like chewing doors and furniture, digging, winning, pacing, growling, and barking. Similarly, as this dog ages, it grows even calmer. Even though Labs are known for their super friendly and social natures, these dogs can be the best watchdogs, if trained properly. On the other hand, when not trained, the same dog might help the intruder to come inside your property. Likewise, these dogs can be reliable guard dogs since they can sense the danger and do whatever it takes to protect their owners. But again, it all depends upon their training. Labrador Retrievers make excellent family dogs due to their sweet nature, gentleness, and protectiveness. Generally, Labs love the whole family, but they tend to make one member their favorite. Resultantly, the dog will be more protective and compassionate towards that one person. Speaking of their behavior towards other pets, Labradors can chase small animals around, due to their strong retrieving and ducking instincts. Labrador Retriever Health and Care Generally, a Labrador Retriever is considered a healthy breed but still, some Labs may develop the following health problems; Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is the most common hereditary disorder, which usually attacks very strong dogs with a tremendous amount of energy, packed in their bodies. In this condition, the hip joint and thigh muscles get partially detached from the pelvic socket. Resultantly, your dog feels restlessness and discomfort while walking or moving rear limbs. As the condition worsens, his rear limbs may get completely immobilized. The only treatment to cure this condition is surgery. And to prevent it from transmitting to the next generation, make sure to have a proper DNA test of your cured Lab, before taking him for breeding. Some other forms of this disease are elbow dysplasia and knee dysplasia which affects the elbow and knee of your labs. Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia Tricuspid valve dysplasia is a heart disorder that is found in Labrador Retrievers more commonly these days. Some puppies, somehow, may manage to survive, but most of them die in a couple of weeks. Resultantly, when the pain worsens, they bites at tail, causing the limber tail. Besides Labrador Retrievers, other Retrievers including Golden Retrievers, are also prone to catch this disorder. Progressive Retinal Atrophy This condition attacks the eyes of your Lab, destroying his photoreceptor retina cell and turning him first into night blind and then completely blind. Acute Moist Dermatitis As the name suggests, this disease is about skin that develops an acute bacterial infection due to insufficient hygiene. Ear Infections Since Labrador Retrievers have floppy ears, they are highly prone to catching ear infections if not cleaned properly. Use specially formulated dog shampoo and cleaner and clip your dog hair to prevent them from matting. Even though the overall grooming requirements of the Labrador Retriever are low, they shed a lot which means they need regular brushing. Trim their nails, brush their teeth, and feed them good-quality dog food. Lastly, this sporting dog breed needs vigorous exercise to stay mentally and physically fit. Thus, take them for daily walks and play with them for about one hour daily. However, avoid overdoing it since exercise-induced collapse is quite common among Labrador Retrievers. Labrador Retriever Training Labrador Retrievers are one of the easiest dogs to train, but only if you employ the right technique and stay consistent. Since Retrievers are quite protective of their families, they might feel threatened and jealous around unfamiliar people. Therefore, to tone up their positive, friendly, and social nature, socialize your Labs with new people and new pets. Instead, they might begin to feel scared of you, which in turn might fuel their escape-artist nature. On the other hand, you can get a Labrador pup from an animal shelter for free. Some of those Labs offered by the rescue groups are even neutered and vaccinated, which saves you from additional costs too. Related Guide:. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Built for sport, the Lab is muscular and athletic. They have a short, easy-care coat, friendly demeanor, keen intelligence, and plenty of energy. Devotion to this breed runs deep; Labs are loving, people-oriented dogs who live to serve their families, and owners and fans sometimes liken their Labs to angels. The breed originated on the island of Newfoundland, off the northeastern Atlantic coast of Canada. Originally called the St. Today, most Labs skip the hard labor and spend their days being pampered and loved by their people. However, some Labs still serve as indispensable working dogs. They also excel as a search and rescue dog or as a retriever for hunters, thanks to their athletic build, strong nose, and courageous nature. And Labs have also become the breed to beat at dog sports such as agility and obedience competitions, especially obedience. In fact, owners say their sweet, helpful Lab is likely to greet an intruder and happily show them where the goods are stashed. One role has remained constant: wonderful companion and friend. They are not a good choice for people who are not active or who do not have a lot of time to spend with their pets. Originally called St. Although their heritage is unknown, many believe the St. The second Earl of Malmesbury was one of the first, and had St. The third Earl of Malmesbury was the first person to refer to the dogs as Labradors. In Newfoundland, the breed disappeared because of government restrictions and tax laws. Families were allowed to keep no more than one dog, and owning a female was highly taxed, so girl puppies were culled from litters. In England, however, the breed survived, and the Kennel Club recognized the Labrador Retriever as a distinct breed in .They also top the list in Canada and England. Today, Labs work in drug and explosive detection, search and rescue, therapy, assistance to those with disabilities, and as retrievers for hunters. They also excel in all forms of dog competitions: show, field, agility, and obedience. Labrador Retriever Size Males stand .Females stand .Aside from a winning personality, they have the intelligence and eagerness to please that make them easy to train. Training is definitely necessary because this breed has a lot of energy and exuberance. The working heritage of the Lab means they are active. This breed needs activity, both physical and mental, to keep them happy. There is some variation in the activity level of Labs: some are rowdy, others are more laid back. All thrive on activity. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia : This is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem or medication to control the pain. Osteochondrosis Dissecans OCD : This orthopedic condition, caused by improper growth of cartilage in the joints, usually occurs in the elbows, but it has been seen in the shoulders, as well. It causes a painful stiffening of the joint, to the point that the dog is unable to bend his elbow. It can be detected in dogs as early as four to nine months of age. Cataracts : As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the eye lens that can grow over time. Cataracts can usually be surgically removed with good results. Early in the disease, dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose their daytime vision, as well. Many dogs adapt to limited or complete vision loss very well, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Epilepsy : Labs can suffer from epilepsy, which causes mild or severe seizures. Seizures may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Puppies are born with TVD, which is a malformation of the tricuspid valve on the right side of the heart. It can be mild or severe; some dogs live with no symptoms, others die. TVD is detected by ultrasound. Research is ongoing to learn how widespread it is in the breed, as well as treatment. Myopathy : Myopathy affects the muscles and nervous system. The first signs are seen early, as young as six weeks and often by seven months of age. A puppy with myopathy is tired, stiff when he walks and trots. He may collapse after exercise. In time, the muscles atrophy and the dog can barely stand or walk. There is no treatment, but rest and keeping the dog warm seems to reduce symptoms. Dogs with myopathy should not be bred because it is considered a heritable disease. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid themselves of the excess air in their stomach, and blood flow to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is drooling excessively, and retching without throwing up. Theyalso may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. If you notice these symptoms, get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Acute Moist Dermatitis: Acute moist dermatitis is a skin condition in which the skin red and inflamed. It is caused by a bacterial infection. The more common name of this health concern is hot spots. Treatment includes clipping the hair, bathing in medicated shampoo, and antibiotics. Cold Tail : Cold tail is a benign, though painful condition common to Labs and other retrievers. The dog may bite at the tail. It is thought to be a problem with the muscles between the vertebrae in the tail. Weekly checking and cleaning if necessary helps prevent infection. Labrador Retriever Care The lovable Lab needs to be around their family, and is definitely not a backyard dog. Labs show some variation in their activity levels, but all of them need activity, both physical and mental. Daily minute walks, a romp at the dog park, or a game of fetch, are a few ways to help your Lab burn off energy. However, a puppy should not be taken for too long walks and should play for a few minutes at a time. It is up to you to end play and training sessions. Without training, a rambunctious Lab puppy will soon grow to be a very large, rowdy dog. Luckily, Labs take to training well; in fact, they often excel in obedience competitions. Start with puppy kindergarten , which not only teaches your pup good canine manners, but helps them learn how to be comfortable around other dogs and people. Look for a class that uses positive training methods that reward the dog for getting it right, rather than punishing them for getting it wrong. Normal play on grass is fine, as is puppy agility, with its one-inch jumps. Labrador Retriever Feeding Recommended daily amount: 2. Back to Top Labrador Retriever Temperament Cheerful and animated, this large dog breed has stamina and energy to spare, able to keep up with your family and all your activities. And thanks to their high intelligence, learning commands and tricks come relativity easy for them. Labrador dogs love having a job to do and excel at things like agility courses and, just like their name implies, retrieving items. In fact, their superior intelligence is why they often make great assistance dogs, working as therapy or service animals. A people-pleaser, Labrador Retrievers have a pleasant personality and love interacting with humans. Get ready to be showered with lots of affection! Slow and controlled introductions to other family pets will help make the transition go smoothly. Addressing any biting issues early on, providing proper socialization when they are puppies aka safely exposing them to lots of new people, places and things and working with a professional dog trainer can help avoid behavioral issues when they get older. Back to Top How to Care for a Labrador Retriever As you might expect with such a popular dog breed, Labs are relatively easy to care for and make great dogs for first-time pet parents. The toughest part about taking care of a Lab will likely be your ability to keep up with them! For more routine maintenance, brush them at least once a week. Consider using a tool like the Furminator to help brush out the undercoat and remove the excess fur. Labs who spend most of their time indoors should be bathed every four to six weeks. You can do this at home or have it done by a professional groomer. For those who get a lot of outdoor time, you should bathe them weekly. Training Labs are eager to please, making them highly trainable. You can begin obedience school with your Labrador puppy between the ages of 7 weeks and 4 months. They can learn the basics such as housebreaking, commands—sit, stay, speak, shake and roll over—and leash skills, such as heel. Labs can be leash-pullers and jumpers. To help train dogs more effectively, choose a headcollar to help prevent pulling and provide more control. A certified professional dog trainer can provide more guidance on correcting the issue. In general, Labs are extremely friendly and do well in most social interactions. As a working dog, they can compete in agility courses, retrieve fish, be excellent guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired, sniff out bombs and drugs, and help law enforcement in search-and-rescue missions. Your veterinarian can help you nail down a feeding chart to guide you on how much and how often to feed your dog based on their specific diet. Because Labs are so active and always on the go, they may benefit from a high-protein dog food. If your pup has digestion issues, you may need to seek out a different dog food formula. While treats are often used in training, be sure to limit the amount you dish out on the daily. An overabundance of treats, even if your pup is super active, is an easy way for them to pack on the pounds. Take them for runs around the neighborhood or at the dog park, in addition to regular walks and hikes at least once a day for an hour is ideal. A great way to burn off their energy is to enroll them in agility course training or let them swim in a pool, lake or ocean if you have those options nearby. Speaking of swimming, Labs absolutely love the water—they were, after all, bred to be waterdogs, retrieving fish and fowl. Lab parents should prioritize water-based outings as often as possible to ensure that their pup gets the precious water time they love. Since Labs are natural swimmers, dock diving makes for a fun exercise that will keep them entertained for hours on end. Ideal Environment Labs want love, affection and attention—and lots of it. Their ideal environment is, unsurprisingly, one where they can be smothered with cuddles, hugs and kisses. These family dogs generally do well with kids and other pets because of their amicable attitude and spirited energy. Having friends over for dinner? Your Lab is likely to steal the show with their cheerfulness. Labs are extremely versatile and tend to flourish in many different environments, from urban to rural. A game of fetch is always a fun option for Retrievers! Reputable breeders often look at lineage to eliminate health problems that can run in bloodlines and be passed from generation to generation. Elbow Dysplasia: When an elbow joint grows abnormally, your pup might experience stiffness in their forelimbs. Their mobility may be affected, and they might deal with some discomfort or pain over time. Treatment will depend on the primary cause of the elbow dysplasia, but in most cases surgery is recommended. Arthritis is common in older Labs because of their large size, which places more strain on their joints with age. There are hip surgeries that can mitigate the effects of hip dysplasia if identified early enough. Allergies: Labs are prone to environmental and food allergies, which can be, at times, rather relentless. Common signs of really bad allergies? Recurring ear and skin infections and chewing at their paws. If your Lab regularly shows these signs, check with your vet for the best way to help keep these reactions at bay. Progressive Retinal Atrophy: Otherwise known as PRA, this describes a number of diseases that can cause degeneration of the lining in the retina, which is in the back of the eye. In some cases, this condition can lead to blindness. But as a deep-chested dog, Labs are more likely to be susceptible to it. In severe cases, the stomach can twist upon itself and result in a condition called gastric dilation volvulus GDV. This is very serious and can be deadly if not treated immediately. Johns Dog or the lesser Newfoundland, Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland not Labrador , Canada, and are longtime descendants of the now-extinct St. With their strong hunting heritage, Labradors first became popularized in the early s as a waterdog who could help fishermen retrieve fish and ducks and bring them back to their boats. Their soft mouths and gentle jaws made them perfect for delicately handling birds and fish. Eventually, they were brought across the Atlantic Ocean to England after English nobles visited Canada. There, the English continued to refine the breed in the second half of the 19th century. The popularity of the Labrador breed has only continued to grow since then. Today, modern Labs are the most popular dog in America, according to the American Kennel Club, which formally recognized the breed in .Labs are mostly sought after for their unmatched diving aptitude and ability to work in the water, largely thanks to their water-repellent coats, webbed feet and otter-like tail. You can also reach out to Labrador Retriever rescue organizations to adopt a Lab or keep an eye out for the breed at your local animal shelter. No, Labs are not hypoallergenic. In fact, Labs shed frequently. Overall, some dog breeds may have less reactive dander, which may make them be seen as hypoallergenic. But it mainly depends on how your body responds and how sensitive your allergies are to any particular animal. Can Labrador Retrievers swim? Yes, Labrador Retrievers can swim; they have webbed feet, which help propel them through the water. They readily jump into the water to retrieve fish or ducks when directed. Can Labrador Retrievers be guard dogs? They perform better at jobs that require constant stimulation, like sporting activities or being a therapy or service animal. What are the most common Labrador mixes? Labs are always up for anything. For those who love to stay active and want a loyal canine companion, Labs are undoubtedly the way to go. They've won the dog personality popularity contest for so many years, as Labs are devoted to their owners—always willing to show you their affection and receive your adoration in return—are highly intelligent, and are happiest doing any and all family activities. Their enthusiasm not only makes them fun to be around, but also makes them a hard-working breed. Labs are companionable, bonding with all family members, and famously friendly to every person and pup they meet. While they have high energy and require lots of activity , they are eager to please and highly trainable. Appearance Thanks to their role as a hunter's companion, the Labrador retriever is a sturdy dog, weighing in at anywhere from 55—80 pounds. Labs come in three colors: chocolate, black, and yellow. While black Labs were an early favorite with breeders, all three types of Labs are common today. Some breeders do offer "rare" Labs, including polar white, fox red, and even silver, but these are simply variations of the three original Lab coloring combinations. Their top coat is short and thick. Their undercoat is softer and helps provide protection from the weather, especially cold temperatures and water, a nod to their original role as retrievers. A Lab's tail serves a purpose in their heritage as well. They are thick and tapered, an "otter tail" that acts as a rudder when Labs swim. But watch out on land—this happy breed gets to wagging their tail often and eagerly, and won't stop if you happen to be in the way. Yellow Labs might be easy to confuse with golden retrievers. Though both are friendly pups and popular with families, they distinctly different breeds. Temperament "The ideal disposition is one of a kindly, outgoing, tractable nature; eager to please and non aggressive towards man or animal," the breed standard says. They are friendly with new people and animals they meet. Tops in the personality department, Labs are also highly intelligent, making them very trainable. They do have lots of energy, so you'll need to stay active with them, but they are also happy to relax at home for family movie night. What many veterinarians do find, however, is that each Lab is an individual with his own personality. Some Labs are more mellow, while others can be higher energy. Some tend to be more anxious dogs. And you can even have a Lab that is a bit of a goofball. But no matter what personality your Lab puppy grows to develop, one thing is always the same. Living Needs Labs adore their owners. They will want to live indoors and sleep as close as possible to you—or even on you. They like to get outside to play, but don't leave them unattended for too long as they may prove they have a naughty side. Labs have been known to dig and chew, so invest in plenty of sturdy chew toys to keep yours entertained. If properly introduced and trained, Labs can also get along well with other pets in the home including cats , other dogs, and small animals. They are competitors, doing well in agility, field tests, and at dog shows. And they absolutely love to swim. Care When you welcome a Lab to your home, be prepared for lots of shedding. Grooming isn't substantial, but brushing your dog daily will help reduce the tumbleweeds of fur scattered about your house from their thick double coat. They should be bathed every other month to keep them smelling fresh. Brushing their teeth a couple of times a week, keeping their nails trimmed —likely once or twice a month—and checking their ears for redness or odor should also be on your Lab care checklist. A daily minute walk or a lively game of fetch will help your pup burn off some of his energy. Lack of activity could lead to undesirable behavior, but don't overdo it—this "workaholic" breed is apt to exhaust itself. Don't let Lab puppies run and play on hard surfaces for their first two years so they don't damage their joints. Of course their reputation for good behavior precedes them, but that doesn't mean you can skip training sessions with your Lab. Training is important to ensure they don't grow to become too rowdy. Introduce Labrador puppies to other humans and animals early to help socialize them properly. This, coupled with ample positive reinforcement , will allow your pup to grow into the friendly Lab many know and love. Health Labs are a pretty hearty and healthy breed , living 10—12 years. But, as with all breeds, there are some common conditions to be aware of. Elbow and hip dysplasia , heart disorders such as tricuspid valve dysplasia TVD , epilepsy , and hereditary myopathy or muscle weakness can all affect Labs. They can also face eye conditions, including progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts. Owners should also be aware of a condition called exercise induced collapse EIC. Labs may also develop hot spots —or acute moist dermatitis—cold tail, and ear infections. History A bit misnamed, Labs actually come from Newfoundland—off the northeastern coast of Canada—not Labrador, according to the Labrador Retriever Club. Descended from St. John's water dogs, Labradors are a traditional waterdog used to retrieve ducks and keep fishermen company. At the end of the work day, Labs were then happy to head home to spend the night with the fishermen's families. They became increasingly popular starting in the early s, when they were brought to England by nobles who appreciated their work ethic and disposition. Public Domain It may be hard to believe, but by the s, Labs were almost extinct because of government restrictions and tax laws—the same laws that led to the St. John's water dogs' extinction, according to the Canadian Broadcast Corporation. Thankfully saved by English breeders, they were introduced to the U. After World War II, the Lab's popularity took over and grew for decades until they ultimately achieved the status of America's—and England and Canada's—most popular pooch. Fun Facts In , for the 29th year in a row, the Lab was voted the number one most popular breed. King Buck was the model Labrador retriever featured on a U. Another famous Lab is Ben of Hyde , born in .Considered the first documented yellow Lab, today most lines of yellow Labs can be traced to his bloodline. The star of the show, Marley, is actually several different Labs who played the role to reflect the various age stages of Marley during the film. His family adopted another chocolate Lab, Seamus , after Clinton's presidency ended. Was this page helpful? They are built for companionship; their warm, friendly natures make it easy to shower them with the affection they so eagerly receive. Here are all the dog care and breed characteristics you need to know about the lovable Labrador Retriever. Breed Background Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland from a medium-sized black dog which was bred in the s to retrieve game and fish. Labs were brought to America during the increase in popularity of Scottish-style shooting and gamekeeping, and went on to become the first dog to grace the cover of Life magazine , and a few years later, a U. Because of their intelligence and ease of training, Labs slowly but surely replaced other breeds as the most common guide dogs, and also became popular choices for assistance dogs, search and rescue dogs, and contraband detection dogs. But above all their other traits, Labs are fun! They love nothing more than to play in the garden, splash in a lake or pool, go exploring, or meet new people and other animals. This is a breed that loves to feel included and useful, eagerly joining in on your everyday activities before carrying your wallet from the car to the kitchen for you. Outgoing and energetic, these dogs need a lot of stimulation to keep from getting bored. And while they are affectionate, Labs are often too busy to remember that they want to cuddle! Puppy training and early socialization is crucial for their development and will give them the chance to grow into polite and devoted adults. The fact that they are eager to please and extremely clever means they are a pleasure to train, and their love of both food and attention makes it easy to reward them! Kind, affectionate, and loving, Labradors are a great choice for a family pet. They get along well with other pets and children, although their lively nature can sometimes be too much for younger children to handle. However, this is different for every family, and personal preference is the only real deciding factor! Typically weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. Yellow, brown, or black coat which retains color in maturity. Red coats are not recognized as official Labrador Retriever colors. Thick, short double coat which sheds moderately. Generally, it requires brushing once or twice a week, or slightly more frequently during their shedding season. Their coats are actually water and ice resistant! Exuberant and boisterous, Labrador Retrievers require a recommended 60 minutes of exercise a day, including swimming, hiking, walking, and endless games of Frisbee and fetch. Treat-filled puzzle toys are a great idea, since they keep your clever pup busy while providing some mental stimulation! Few breeds can boast that they are not only easygoing and friendly, but intelligent and loyal too. Honestly, Labs make it easy for us to love them. golden retriever red puppies - It is still hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that my baby is three. It seems like just yesterday that John Davis was born , yet I blinked and some how I have a three year old. Celebrate big and sweet while they still let us. Well, fast forward to this year and add in the busyness of having a toddler and a baby and I found myself a month out from his birthday with absolutely no plans of what I was going to do. While browsing around in search of ideas I came across these adorable invitations from Dixie Design and fell in love! It was right up my alley with all of the blue and white, puppies, and of course, gingham! I spread out all of the food on our kitchen island on a classic white linen tablecloth. Our kitchen opens up to our family room and breakfast nook which makes for easy entertaining. I created an inexpensive table runner with blue gingham fabric from Hobby Lobby by simply cutting the edges with pinking shears to prevent fraying. I do this for almost every party because it is so easy and inexpensive to buy a few yards of fabric. The adorable cake, which also served as the centerpiece, was made by one of our neighbors. She does not have a business, but if you are local you can send me a message and I will pass along her name. She is simply the best and oh so affordable! Her cakes are absolutely beautiful but they taste even better than they look. Not to mention it was so convenient going only a few houses down to pick up the cake the morning of the party. I use them for just about everything and switch out the ribbon on top accordingly. I wrapped up the utensils in polka dot napkins from Party City and tied them with a blue ribbon. I used these matching polka dot plates and napkins , and served the cake with these coordinating dessert plates and dessert napkins. Taking a little extra time to tie your utensils is not only easy and practical it makes it so easy for guests to grab them and go! What is it about a kids table that is so sweet? I made the banner by simply cutting triangles out of craft paper and hot gluing them onto a white ribbon. Old fashioned party hats make a cute table accessory and the kids loved wearing them too. Can you spy my sweet little birthday boy in the background? I saw them and just had to have them! I had originally planned to put them in the party favor bags, but when I saw how cute they were I decided to set them out on the tables instead. They were so reasonably priced at just ten dollars for two dozen and they were the perfect finishing touch for the table. I ran into Hobby Lobby the day before the party procrastinator looking for small white metal buckets to put them in. Of course it was the day before the party and of course my local Hobby Lobby had every color bucket imaginable except for white. Why does it always work that way?! With no time to waste I threw these metal buckets in the buggy and was out spray painting them white in our backyard the night before the party. I stuck some floral foam from the DollarTree down in each bucket and topped them with white paper shreds also from the DollarTree. And obviously I just had to tie a blue ribbon around each lollipop stick. I used this cookie cutter to cut them into the dog shape. Once you have prepared your sandwiches, put them in between two damp paper towels and place them inside an airtight ziplock back. When you are ready to set your sandwiches out on your serving tray, place the damp paper towels on top of your sandwiches until your guests arrive. This will keep your bread nice and soft and prevent it from drying out before the party starts. These little dog shaped sandwiches were so simple, but everyone went crazy over them! Even I have to say they were so cute! Also on the menu: puppy chow. I made a HUGE batch of this even doubled the recipe and it was gone in no time. Note to self: next time, quadruple the recipe! Also on the menu: pimento cheese and crackers. This Palmetto pimento cheese is to die for. We bought two big tubs from Costco and every single bit of it was gone. This is another one of those things that is very inexpensive and very easy to do, but adds so much. We also had chicken fingers and honey mustard dipping sauce, a veggie tray with ranch dressing, a fruit tray, and chicken salad and croissants. All of the fruit and veggies came from Costco. I cut them up and placed them on white serving trays the night before the party. They were ready to go and all I had to do was pull them out of the fridge the morning of the party. I had originally planned on making a big batch of chicken salad what was I thinking?! For drinks we had water, tea and apple juice boxes for the children. Snips and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails Party Favors One of my favorite things to do for a party is put together cute party favor bags for the children, and these puppy dog bags did not disappoint! I started with a plain white craft bag from Hobby Lobby. I cut out the shapes for the ears, eyes, nose and hat from cardstock and used a hot glue gun to glue each piece onto the bag. I tied the top together with raffia which makes the perfect finishing touch! I set them out on our entryway table so that guests could see them when they entered and grab one to go when they left. I love the Little Golden Books because they are so classic. I made a printable tag for the book and for the puppy chow and tied them on with raffia to coordinate with the bags. I used this scalloped circle punch to cut them out. While I was cutting out the shapes for the party favor bags, I also made a puppy dog garland banner for the mantel. This puppy dog banner just may have been my favorite thing from the entire party! I love the way the baby blue stands out against all of the white! Another thing I decided the day before the party? That we needed a door hanger for the party! Then I got to painting with white craft paint and used a blue paint pen for the lettering. One of my other favorite things from the party was the giant dog wearing a party hat and holding balloons in his mouth. He greeted guests outside as they walked up to the front door. I used our jigsaw to cut out the shape and attached it to stakes to stick down into the ground. A few days before the party I had to run into Target to grab a few things. Obviously I cannot go into Target without checking out all the cuteness in the dollar spot. Lo and behold they had this cute little wooden snail! Obviously it was just meant to be : I painted him green and he looked so cute next to the dog. Happy 3rd Birthday John Davis! How cute does my sweet boy look in his puppy dog birthday shirt? How lucky am I to be able to call up Mother and place an order for custom clothing?? Fletcher was ready for a nap before the party even started and Mr. Fletcher slept through almost the entire party, which actually worked out well because we were able to give John Davis our full attention. And he definitely enjoyed that piece of cake! Who needs utensils when you can eat icing with your hands? Love these rare pictures of just me and my big boy! And my little boy, too! These pictures of our little family might just be some of my favorites of all time. But they so perfectly depict our lives right now: fast and furious with two energetic boys, but more full of love and joy than I could ever describe! And look at my beautiful Mama. But thats okay because she loves him and spoils him like only a Grandmother should. See these firemen boots? They are the only shoes John Davis will wear right now. I tried to snap a few pictures of just John Davis before the party, but most of them are just a big blur of movement. I know he is mine, but that little face still takes my breath away. I love these sweet pictures of John Davis with his cousin Riley. How cute are they together?! His mama and I were inseparable as cousins growing up and I hope Riley and John Davis are the exact same way. And would you just look at my Grandmother and how beautiful she is? We sure do love our Mamaw. It truly means the world to have us all together for special days like these. Candid Hubby… he loves birthday parties ; And my two beautiful and sweet Aunts! Love this picture of my Mama and my Mamaw. And I love this one with all three generations all in one picture. Tayler and I have pictures of us together at their age holding our baby dolls. Now here we are together holding our own real-life baby dolls! Just as the party was about over Fletcher finally woke up from his nap and came down to say hi to everyone. Look at that sweet sleepy face. The kids barely stopped the entire afternoon and they had so much fun playing in the bounce house. It came highly recommended from my sister in law who has the same one for her kids. It has held up great over time, and even though her kids are older now they still love to play on it. John Davis especially loves the slide and he must have gone down it at least times. Another bonus? The kiddos get ALL of their energy out! I love this picture of Daddy and John Davis. These were my best attempt at getting a picture of John Davis and Fletcher together. Photographing a toddler and a baby together is a challenge like no other! These sweet boys were worn out as the party was over. We had such a great time just sitting around and spending time with our family for the rest of the afternoon. I happened to look over and snap this picture of two sleepy boys holding hands watching TV together before they crashed for the night. And since Fletcher was finally awake, I had to take the opportunity to get a few pictures of him with the puppy dog and the snail. He will probably never get any hair because we rub on his head so much! Happy, Happy Birthday John Davis!!! We are so thankful God gave us the opportunity to be your Mama and Daddy. We love you more than we could ever put into words! Here are our four favorite baby boy shower gifts for An adorable Hospital Snuggle Set. Each set comes complete with a matching newborn top, pants, hat, and coming home blanket in beautiful blue with a super-sweet and unexpected balloon animal print accent. Hook and loop closures make them easy to take on and off, and their fuzzy faux-fur exterior guarantees baby boy will be a tiny newborn trendsetter. A sweetly personalized picture book. A little boy named Ben might meet a Bear, while Huck might run into a Hippo. No matter how prepared new parents are, raising baby boys is full of joy, adventure, exhaustion, and a whole lot of surprises. Whether you bring one of our favorite baby shower gifts, or a unique gift of your own, continue to shower new parents with your love and support as baby boy grows! It takes a village, after all. They are lucky to have you in theirs! Received in extremely poor condition. Covered in dirty and sticky marks, holes and scuffs in the leather. Also the latch to lock it does not meet the hole correctly, so very poor quality. Looks like it's been kicked around a dirty warehouse. This was a gift so had to clean it up myself. Seller unhelpful in communication about a partial or full refund. The quality is super and they appear very hard wearing. The size of the large one is good and can easily cope with keeping larger items in. The smaller one is also a good size, larger than a jewellery box and therefore able to hold a good amount too. Beautifully designed, brilliant quality and lots of storage for items such as first pair of shoes, clothes, baby toys etc. Bought for my niece's first birthday - will be a lovely accessory for her bedroom. I bought these as a Baptismal present for a baby girl. There's plenty of room in the two pretty boxes to store all the cards one would want to keep; plus school reports; certificates etc etc etc plus a baby-book. Wonderful gift and prompt delivery. .As another reviewer has found, the boxes were delivered in poor condition with the faux leather scuffed. The trim wasn't stuck on properly and I could feel the sticky glue around the box. I had to chase the refund once I had sent it back and even then I did ot get the postage refunded. Reviewed in the United States on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August Not Wonderful i had to return this item as it was not in a great condition to give as a gift. Well made and a good size. Very well made. These are absolutely gorgeous! Arrived within 2 days of ordering and came in perfect condition no faults what so ever! They and Sinister have a conversation about mechanics and robot engineering. Cast of Characters: Sinister has posed: Sunnydale is having a particularly nice day outside. Many slurpees have been sold, as have frappes and ice-creams for a particularly hot kind of day. Inside, one presumes things to be a little cooler, but you never know if old fashioned store keepers ever bothered with much more than a ceiling fan. The door chimes, the tall figure of Sinister stepping inside, sans disguise. As himself; cloak dispensed with in favour of a cloak of feathers that sit tight-tight to his back. Anyone about? Nikki Hawkins has posed: It is a nice and sunny day in Sunnydale, and Nikki is out roaming the town because she can be. At least today she's without her robot companion, because Squishy doesn't so well for long periods of time in hot weather. Did someone say slurpee? Nikki has one of those! Then she wanders - as a Nikki does - until she finds the Magic Box, and since it's earlier in the day and she doesn't see anyone familiar outside, she walks up the steps and peeks inside. She eyes the Feathered Man tm for a moment and then decidedly side-steps away from him and just begins walking around. Cause all in all she's a perfectly normal young adult who likes to shop around. And sip on a slurpee. It's not until she opens her mouth that she may prove otherwise. Mercy Thompson has posed: The chiming of the door has a way of getting attention. It might not be the attention that's being particularly sought out, but it's still attention. From out of the back room of the shop is where Mercy quietly steps, a mug of something steaming held in her left hand. A smile comes to tug at the corners of her lips, and she gives a small nod of greeting. Her black hair is caught in her typical pigtails, though they seem a bit frayed simply from having been in for hours already. She wears a pair of blue jean shorts that, from their cut off edges, were once jeans. Her usual tan steel-toed boots are on her feet, and she wears a blue t-shirt with a cartoonish white VW beetle putt-putting across the front of it. There's a glance given towards the young woman that she doesn't know, and her attention shifts back to Sinister. Wait, do I know you? Sinister looks to Mercy as the woman exits the back, gesturing open palmed across himself at Nikki. With a icey drink? I am not having an archangel induced flashback? Ahh, hello Mercy.Nikki Hawkins has posed: When she hears the name 'Squishy', Nikki turns her attention towards the Feathered Man tm and upon seeing his face her eyes go wide. Nikki saw the mudmonster! Red-eyed Man tm was trying to squish things! Nikki and Squishy made an escape. It was weird. She's right here. Why is he asking if she is real? Mercy Thompson has posed: "Squishy? Who's Squishy? I suppose a Squishy could be a what," she adds, one of her eyebrows quirking slightly. She tilts her head a touch to one side, looking over towards the young woman with the Slurpee and then back to Sinister. And she blinks. Mercy glances towards the young woman and then back to Sinister. Why would you think that you're having an archangel induced flashback? She lifts her mug of tea to take a sip of it. Sinister has posed: "Yeeees, I think so. I mean, I'm not obsessed with anything unusual and.No more mud monsters for now, they dissipated when the police opened fire. Just a moment. He holds up a hand to Mercy, pinching the bridge of his nose and pressing at his eyes with the other. A rather old romanian magician made mud monster golems, but the police got called, because.Got shot. I think miss Nikki fled and there was a tiny rolly robot called Squishy. Did I get that all correct, more or less? He lets the wings relax then; they shuffle as they unfurl enough to LOOK like wings and settle. Nikki Hawkins has posed: Nikki tilts her head one way and then the other before giving a nod of her head and then she's distracted by something shiny. When she hears Nathaniel speak again, she looks back up and seems to look confused. Nikki and Squishy must have left before they came. He doesn't do well in the heat, so Nikki left him at home today. But most people who meet Nikki meet Squishy too. Nikki'll bring him by sometime so Pigtail Lady can meet him! Another slurp of her icey drink is taken as she walks around, careful not to touch anything, just looking for the moment. Mercy Thompson has posed: There's a curious look towards the young woman with the frosty drink, and then Mercy turns her gaze back to Sinister. And she blinks, caught a touch off guard by something he says. I heard a brief mention on the news about. They didn't give details, but the reporter mentioned that shots had been fired," she says softly. Or perhaps something cold to drink? The cold drink might be more welcome on a day like today. She gives a slower sort of nod at the explanation that he offers to encompass the mudmonsters and other occurrences of the same night. If she didn't know about his healing ability then she'd have been concerned about him getting shot. Mercy's attention shifts to Nikki at the explanation about Squishy. That's cool. It sounds like he could maybe benefit from some type of improved cooling system, if the heat is a problem. But that's just a guess on my part," she says, a thoughtful tone to her voice. Then a smile tugs at the corners of her lips. You can call me Mercy, if you like," she offers with a bit of a nod. Sinister has posed: "I guess yes, that was that night. Shots fired," Sinister snorts at that, watching Mercy interact with NIkki now, studying the pair of women. Multiple shots, shot multiple times. But there we go. But you know, I can do that myself.A clunk has him wincing, ".Maybe he needs a cooling system. Nikki needs to find more parts so she can make adjustments to Squishy. Still sipping on her slurpee, she then manages her way to where some books are in shelves and she busies herself with looking those over for a moment. Nikki is Nikki. The Red-Eyed Man hasn't given Nikki a name yet.Nikki calls him Stoop Man. And Romanian Man too. He helped Nikki get some stuff out of a dumpster once. It's why she likes it and keeps coming back. But this is her first time inside. One of her eyebrows quirks up as she turns back to face him, studying him for a moment before giving a nod. The clunk has her turning her head to look in the direction of the back room, but since it does't sound like anything broke, her attention returns back to him. And to the young woman. Mercy gives a nod. And a cooling system would be a good idea for him, if he minds the heat. Then he could keep you company even when it's hot out. It'll get hotter, later in the summer," she comments, her tone thoughtful. Then she tilts her head a touch to one side. She lifts her mug, taking a sip of her tea and stepping closer to where Sinister has settled, drawing out a seat to settle into. One that gives her a vantage of the shop. She isn't entirely sure who the others are that Nikki has met, given the unusual names that she gives them. Sinister has posed: "Oh, yes, I do beg your pardon, I was out of my head when we met," Sinister looks at Mercy with an incline of his head, "polite but unnecessary, just this once. The kettle whistles to boiling and clicks, the sound of pouring water follows and a cup floats out from the kitchenette, steaming as it floats on in to settle infront of him. If there's a hard to source part, please -do- let me know. Squishy needs a cooling system. Nikki hasn't found a good cooling system. They're really expensive even at market costs. Nikki might get one after her next tournament. Something titled 'Magick for Beginners', which she flips through a little bit. She totally misses the floating cup that comes from the kitchen to Sinister. Red-Eyed man is also Nathaniel. Nikki will try to remember that but sometimes she's bad at remembering real names which is why she gives nicknames. It's fun. But she's running out of pieces to make go boom. She lifts her tea to take a sip of it, then glances towards the tea as it floats over to come to rest in front of him. One of her eyebrows raises, and then she gives a nod, her chin ducking a touch. There's been a higher amount of drop-in work at the garage last week, so the work on the engine for the Rabbit hasn't gone as quickly as what I'd expected, but it's getting there," she says, a smile returning to her features. Her attention turns to Nikki, and she gives a small nod. Would something like an air conditioning system from a vehicle be able to be modified to fit and work? Sinister has posed: "Compressor. Miniature one, from the higher end Beemers and Mercs ought to do it, modified with some work. Might need to load a cannister of freon, but that's the poor man's conditioning," Sinister murmurs, sipping the piping hot tea as he lifts it with his hands. A sidelong look is shot to Mercy and he inclines his head oh-so-gently, sipping again. Worry actually, given I'm.It felt good to confess, Mercy. There's the hydrolic system that makes him move.Seems she really knows her stuff, even if she comes off sounding like she's not got a lot of brains in her head. The mainframe can't handle the intake though, and only processes like five commands a second which isn't something Nikki wants. If Nikki is going to impress anyone, she wants it to be perfect.Stuff is dangerous.Nikki just doesn't have the means to do all of that. She's working on it though. It all starts coming together into more cohesive sentences. Mercy Thompson has posed: There's a thoughtful expression that creeps to Mercy's features at Sinister's mention of where the compressor might be sourced from, and she finds herself giving a slow nod. Compressor, that is," she says in a thoughtful tone. She ducks her chin slightly. I didn't mean to cause you any sort of worry over the matter. I would have let you know the last time that I saw you, but I became a bit.She studies him for a moment, and then she gives a small nod. Perhaps they're not wrong," she says softly. She has her own truths to tell that she's been keeping secret, or that she thinks she's been keeping secret, at any rate. Her gaze lingers on him for a moment, and then she looks over to Nikki, studying the young woman. Similar to a radiator in a vehicle, sort of," she muses, a thoughtful tone to her voice. Sinister has posed: Sinister opens his mouth, closes it several times, the speech he might have given cut short by second thoughts. He looks to both women with this though, the one that hides things that he's at least partially aware of and the enthusiastic roboteer and ends up frowning to the point of it almost being a scowl. His forehead is rubbed, his tea covetted whilst he works his way through whatever this is. He looks annoyed, though not at them, more some nebulous thing that might be himself. Well, they're both mechanics. Clicking his fingers a circle of electricity manifests beside him as it is want to do and a metallic tentacle dips in, setting a cube on the table of the magic shop. He taps it and it goes through a series of contortions along a pythagorean configuration, folding smaller and smaller into a different shape, until he has a heavy wrench. He gestures at it, for Mercy's benefit. He then taps it again and it unfolds, then breaks apart into tiny triangles. Nikki Hawkins has posed: Nikki looks between the two for a moment before figuring her icey drink is a bit more interesting than the topic of conversation that she's not really a part of anyway. She's just a normal human, there's nothing about her that can sense anything, or feel anything, or has any sort of way to know that someone is a little on the irritated side. Even social cues fail her but that's because she's got a mental disorder that she's never been tested for. So when Sinister does that thing with a circle of electricity and pulls out some cube with a metallic tentacle, her eyes go wide and she skitters from the table. Her chair knocks over and she almost looses her slushie. What's the doctor doing?! Mercy Thompson has posed: There's a significant moment whilst Nathaniel is doing a goldfish impression in which Mercy waits for the words to come from him. And then they don't. She tilts her head a touch to one side, and she lifts her mug of tea to take a sip from it. She watches him, and watches his expression shift from frown to near scowl. She shifts her position slightly, crossing one of her legs over the other at the knee. Perhaps a touch wary, but annoyed powerful males tend to invoke that sort of thing. One of her eyebrows quirks up as the ring of electricity manifests, and there's the mechanical tentacle that comes out of it. Her attention is caught by that, secured on it, and then once it's gone, her gaze slips to the cube. She looks to Nikki, and a smile touches her lips. Then she looks back to Nathaniel. This seems to be a familiar thing to Sinister as he swings his head over toward Nikki, fixing her with that solid red regard for a moment or two, then away. Well, Mercy will sense he bristles, but contains it and bites it down. But odder perhaps is not treating this as a situation where someone won't understand. It takes a lot of energy, but I've mastered the power of quantum singularity and Tony Stark did wonders for zero-point energy. That's been around elsewhere for a while. What that allows me to do, is by the electric signals of my brain, I can activate wormhole gates to create teleport holes from the location of my installations, to where I currently am, punching through by creating molecular symmetry between this ring here and that ring there, opening a hole. Quantum nanotech is adaptive and can be whatever you instruct it to be. THe processors however. They end up being triple parallel, because of the design and will greatly enhance your ability to instill commands in Squishy. Have fun figuring them out. She tilts her head for a moment, taking in all that he's saying, and the name that he drops. It should be blocked by the skull and the flesh. Tony Stark manipulates things with his arc reactor. Those little triangles are pushed towards the chair Nikki toppled over. A chair which she stands back up and slowly sits back down on. She reaches for one of the triangles and picks it up, looking it over a bit. He'd need a lot of upgrades.
