Golden Retriever Grooming Goldens heavily shed their thick, water-repellant double coat once or twice a year, and they also shed more moderately on a continuous basis. Most of the time, a good brushing-out with a slicker brush once or twice a week will remove much of the dead hair before it has a chance to fall onto the furniture. During times of heavy shedding, these brushing sessions turn into daily affairs. Baths help to loosen the dead hairs, but the dog must be completely dry before brushing begins. Also, breeders who are selling purebred dogs usually have higher standards for their puppies and charge more for them. This is because puppies that are younger are perceived as being more valuable due to their potential for future growth. Older dogs, on the other hand, may have already reached their full adult size and may not be as desirable to some buyers. Genuine, responsible breeders will charge more for their puppies because they offer good health guarantees, high-quality breeding stock, and proper socialization and training. These breeders also care about their puppies and want to make sure they go to good homes. Health of the Dog One of the most important factors that determine the price of a golden retriever is the health of the dog. Generally, dogs that are in good health and have no major health concerns will be more expensive than those that do. Breeders will also charge more for puppies that come from healthy and well-bred parents. So, before you buy a golden retriever, be sure to ask the breeder about the health history of both the parents and the puppy. Their coat can be straight or wavy, and some coats are even curly. They also need a bath at least once a month, and you should brush their teeth two or three times a week. To trim their nails, use a clipper made for dogs and cut them just after the curve—never cut into the quick the dead part of the nail. Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are both active, friendly sporting dogs full of adoration, energy, and good humor. They make excellent family pets and are great with children. However, there are a few key differences between the two breeds. For starters, Labradors are better swimmers and retrievers due to their muscular build and webbed paws, while Goldens are better at agility tasks and as therapy dogs. It has had more staying power than many other designer dogs that emerged at this time because it is an especially great breed for families looking for a dog to protect their property but still has the affectionate streak of a family pet. Labrador retrievers are medium-to-large gun dogs that were bred in the United Kingdom from stock brought over from Canada specifically to retrieve game, even in wet conditions. This means they were bred to love the water and have a soft mouth for retrieving. They are also very intelligent dogs that enjoy working and are eager to please and therefore easy to train. These characteristics have made them popular working dogs in assistance and service roles as well as popular family pets. However, they do require consistent grooming and shed heavily. Meanwhile, Doberman Pinschers are even bigger dogs at around three to four inches taller than Labs. They were developed by a tax collector in Germany in the late 19th century. He wanted an intelligent and strong dog that could protect him while working that looked impressive enough to put off most would-be thieves based on appearance alone. Dobermans are brave and fearless when it comes to protecting their people. Nevertheless, they are commonly seen as police dogs, personal protection dogs, and guard dogs. To account for the size difference between the different parent breeds, the mother will always be the Doberman. Female Dobermans measure 25 to 27 inches in height and weigh 71 to 77 pounds. The males are quite a bit bigger, measuring up to 28 inches and weighing up to pounds. Male Labs measure 22 to .This basically means you can expect your Doberman Lab mix to be 24 to 28 inches tall and weigh around 60 to pounds, with the males being quite a bit larger than the females. It is less predictable whether they will have the stockier but athletic body of a Labrador or the thinner and stronger body of a Doberman. Overall, they tend to have a heavier look than your average Doberman. Additionally, they could also have either the pointed ears and snout of a Doberman or the slightly flatter face of a Lab with floppy ears. But it is not an exact science, so some Labramans can end up having more high-shedding coats. The thinner coat also means they are less tolerant of the water and the cold than a Labrador. Doberman Labradors can have varying coat colors as well. They can be black, chocolate, tan, or fawn in color, and they can have a solid coat like a Lab or markings like a Doberman. Doberman Lab Mix Temperament Both Labrador retrievers and Dobermans are intelligent dogs, so you can expect the same from their offspring. But while Labs are eager to please and therefore highly trainable, Dobermans are more independent and therefore more difficult to orient. Nevertheless, they have proved themselves capable of completing the complex training required to become police dogs, and their independent thinking is helpful in unknown situations. Most Labrador Doberman mixes will be very intelligent and even more trainable than your average Doberman, but you can expect a little bit of stubbornness, especially when food is involved. Labs are very friendly dogs that like to make friends with everything they meet! This makes them great family pets, since they enjoy the company of children and other animals, but terrible guard dogs. Dobermans are loyal and bond quickly with their people, including children, and can get on well with other animals if properly socialized. However, they are much more wary of strangers. They are also very protective and will jump into action when they perceive a threat. This will be barking and growling while placing themselves between their people and danger rather than biting. With a Doberman Lab mix, you should expect something between the two. They are typically loving dogs that will get along great with your family but also raise the alarm when it comes to strangers. They should be easy to control with a firm command if they have been properly trained, but you can expect them to be quite noisy dogs. It is this balance that makes the Dobrador a great balance between a family pet and guard dog. Always use positive reinforcement rather than punishment to train your Doberman Lab mix. It is more effective, and punishment can unintentionally trigger aggression. Doberman Lab Mix Energy Levels Both Labrador retrievers and Dobermans are high-energy dogs that need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Labrador Doberman mixes need at least an hour of exercise a day, preferably split over two or three different sessions. They will want to flop their huge frame down on the couch with you for a snuggle and always like to know what is going on in the house. Nevertheless, they do need an outdoor space, as they will want to be moving around for a lot of the day. Their large size means this can be uncomfortable indoors, so a backyard is a must. A larger property they can wander and defend will make them very happy. Even if you leave them in the yard, they can develop anxiety if they are left alone for eight hours or so a day when everyone is out at school or work. They really need a family that has time to spend time with them. Watch their diet carefully, as both of their parent breeds tend to love food. It is easy for them to overindulge and put on weight. We tend to want to show our dogs love through food, but this can do more harm than good. Remember, every treat contains calories, too! A calorie-controlled diet that is high in animal-based proteins and healthy fats is ideal for high-energy dogs like a Doberman Lab mix. They have more diverse genes than their parent breeds, which means they may be less prone to some of the illnesses that affect them. However, their large size means elbow and hip dysplasia can be a major problem. When the joints are misaligned, their movement becomes strained, resulting in a lot of pain. While this is genetic, one major aggravating factor for this condition is too much exercise while growing. Until they are fully grown, which can take 18 months to two years, they should only get about five minutes of exercise per day per month of age. So, at four months they need 20 minutes, at six months they need 30 minutes, and they should only be getting close to an hour a day once they are a year old. Wobbler syndrome has also proven relatively common in this mixed breed. This is a neurological disease that affects the spine and neck of larger dogs. If they develop the condition, you will notice it because their legs will become wobbly when walking. In about five percent of cases, this can progress to full paralysis. Early and consistent vet check-ups can help prevent and monitor conditions like Wobbler syndrome. Labrador puppies are already quite popular, and many breeders work with them. Dobermans are harder to get your hands on, and you might pay almost twice that for a puppy from a reputable breeder. Additionally, you may get lucky and find a Doberman Lab mix at a rescue or up for adoption. They grow to be a lot bigger than people expect and need a lot of space, which are the main reasons that they end up in rescues. The fact that they naturally bark quite a lot can also lead to them needing to find a new home. Doberman Lab mixes can be great dogs if you want a friendly-family pet that can also act as a guard dog. How big is a Lab Doberman mix? Doberman Lab mix dogs are fairly large. They can measure anywhere from 24 to 28 inches and weigh 60 to pounds. The males tend to be significantly larger than the females. When apartments restrict specific dogs, it usually comes down to size and perceived aggression. Dobermans are big dogs with a reputation for being aggressive and working as police dogs. If Dobermans are not allowed in your apartment, a Doberman Lab mix will probably also be restricted. Labrador Doberman mix dogs make great pets. They can be loving family dogs that also protect your family and property. But the main thing to remember is they are big dogs with lots of energy, so not everyone is capable of looking after them. You need the space, time, and energy yourself to exercise and train them. However, if you have a fairly large property that needs a guard dog, and you want a pet to join you on physical adventures, then the Doberman Lab mix may be the perfect dog for you. Doberdor Highlights Doberdors are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Doberman Pinscher or Labrador Retriever parents. The most common Doberdor colors include black, chocolate, tan, and fawn. Doberdors require way more exercise than your average dog. Ball games and interactive toys are also a must. Doberdors get along well with children, though they should be socialized from an early age. As with all dogs, children should be supervised and taught how to properly interact with pets. The Doberman first came on the scene back in the s in Germany. The dog was actually invented by a tax collector who also worked at a local kennel! After a while, the breed graduated from being renowned as a guard dog to being employed by the military and police force. The Labrador Retriever originates from Canada, where it was first bred as a dog to help out with hunting and retrieving tasks. These days, the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dogs in the United States. The Doberdor has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. Doberdor Size The Doberdor is usually described as a large-sized dog. Although, as is always the case with newer dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 60 to pounds and range in height from 24 to 28 inches. Female Doberdors can be noticeably smaller than their male counterparts. These dogs can become super loyal and will definitely act as a guardian of your family and property, but they also require an owner with the time, patience, and experience to train and socialize them properly. The breed is very smart, but with that intelligence also comes a degree of stubborness. Doberdor Health Doberdors are generally considered to be healthy dogs—although the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Doberman Pinscher and Labrador Retriever face. This should be split up into two or even three separate sessions. Games of fetch can also help keep the breed in tip top shape. Doberdor Feeding An ideal Doberdor diet should be formulated for a large breed with high energy. Bathing needs are low and should be undertaken if the dog seems dirty. Ask your vet if you wish to put into place a regular bathing routine for your Doberdor. Due to their coat, the Doberdor does much better in warmer rather than colder climates. Think of the dog as like an older sibling, full of love and protective instincts. Teaching children to act responsibly around the dog is also a must. Most Doberdors will be okay living with other animals and pets—but you will need to very quickly let the breed know that cats and rabbits are not to be considered as prey. Again, early socialization between the breed and any resident pets is key. Ultimately, early socialization pays off—so make sure to reward your Doberdor for good behavior and adhere to a proper training regime when you bring them home to your family. Doberdor Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Doberdors because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Doberman Pinscher or Labrador Retriever breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Trainable Protective The temperament of the Doberman Labrador mix is one that is kind, loving, watchful, playful, and loyal. But even guard dog breeds like the Doberman make great family pets with proper time and effort put into training and socialization. This is the critical part that too many dog owners omit. Brushing the Doberman Labrador Mix will be an everyday thing for spring and fall. Twice weekly is sufficient in winter and summer. Doberman Labrador Mix Health Issues Bloat or Gastric Dilatation — where gas builds up in the stomach, causing the intestines to knot up and block blood from going into and out of the stomach and heart. This can kill your dog in a matter of hours. The most common reason for this to happen is if you exercise your dog after he eats. Hip Dysplasia — common to purebreds, it is not life-threatening, but can be painful to the dog. Bone Cancer — can happen to a dog at any age, but generally happens to older dogs. The tail stops wagging from overuse and can be painful for the dog. Obesity — Be careful not to give your dog too many treats. It is easier Labrador to gain weight. Doberman Labrador mix. Doberman and Labrador Histories The Doberman Lab mix has a rich working history, specializing in two very different jobs. The Labrador Retriever breed was first developed in Newfoundland, Canada. Where smaller water-fowl hunting dogs were mated with Newfoundlands to make the ultimate retrieving companion. Modern Labs are prized working dogs, service companions, therapy animals and of course family pets. The Doberman Pinscher was first bred in Germany during the late s as a protection dog. To develop this type of dog, short-haired Shepherd-type dogs were bred with Rottweilers, black and tan terriers, and German Pinschers. Even military work! What Do They Look Like? Your Doberman Lab mix dog will be tall, lean and leggy. They have naturally floppy ears and long slim muzzles. As their name suggests, chocolate Lab-Doberman puppies could come out chocolate brown, like their chocolate Lab parent, or they could come out looking more like a Doberman. Generally, Doberdors are solid colored like the Lab, but they may be bicolored like the Doberman. A dense double coat will require weekly brushing. Doberman Pinschers have long been viewed as dangerous dogs. Some Dobermans may have a more severe temperament than others. Additionally, Dobermans do not take well to being caged for long periods of time. They do not do well with isolation at all. Labradors also have a tendency to get bored and destructive if left alone for lengthy periods. These breeds are not advised if you work away from home during the day. If you plan to get a Doberdor, you might like to have two of them. Or maybe another pet that you know your Doberman Lab mix gets along with. All of these precautions should help reduce their need to guard their property or family from people or other pets. As the Doberman Lab tends to be a good-sized dog, some people may find one that likes to jump a bit intimidating. Or once he spies something that resembles a bird or squirrel! A great recall is essential. Until you have this a Doberman Lab mix would greatly benefit from a fenced-in yard. This way they can play, be trained and exercise risk free. Doberman and Labrador Health A few common canine ailments that are common across breeds. These include hip dysplasia, eye diseases, allergies, and skin irritations. However, hybrids like Doberman Labrador mixes may inherit the health conditions that are common in their parent breeds. Doberman Lab mix dogs have the potential to inherit health conditions from either parent. Both the Doberman and Labrador mother or father should have great hip scores and be tested clear for Progressive Retinol Athrophy. You absolutely will need an exercise plan for one of these active and playful fur babies. Exercise is especially important if your Doberman Lab takes after his Lab parent in the weight category, as he may easily gain too much weight without adequate exercise. Your pup will be even happier if he gets to stretch his legs at the dog park every so often! Lifespan Hybrid dogs generally have the same life expectancy as their parent breeds. So, the Doberman Lab mix has an estimated life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. Doberman Lab Mix Puppies Your Doberman Lab mix puppy should come from a breeder who prioritises health and temperament. You should be confident that they know you can handle a dog of either temperament, and ask you lots of questions about what you plan to do in terms of training and exercising your new puppy. The best Doberman Lab mix breeders are open, honest and have ensured both parent dogs were fully health tested. Should I get a Doberman Lab mix? As with any dog, mixed or not, you must also be prepared to deal with any ailments that come with the breed or breeds, especially hip dysplasia and loss of eyesight, in this case. There are a host of other inherited conditions that a Doberman Lab mix may develop, so we also recommend genetic testing of breeding stock before you purchase a puppy. Both of these personality types can be handled with proper training. Today, the concept of designer dogs is well known and accepted. But where some designer dogs are so popular they are nearly household names Cockapoo , Labradoodle, Puggle , others are still catching up. The Doberdor is one such hybrid dog. Doberman Pinscher History Interestingly, like the Dobredor, the Doberman purebred dog breed also has somewhat mysterious origins. What is clear, is that this dog breed first appeared around , courtesy of one Herr Karl Friedrich Louis Doberman. So the story goes, Herr Doberman needed a guard dog to protect him during his work. Breeding efforts over time shifted from producing a fierce and unpredictable military and police dog to selecting traits for loyalty, protection and trustworthiness. This shift resulted in the Doberman breed taking its place as one of the favorite large dog family breeds. Labrador Retriever History The Labrador Retriever has been the number one most popular purebred large breed pet dog in the nation for a while now. These furry, friendly, loyal and loving large breed dogs are very popular pets and workers. Early Labradors were always black, but today the yellow lab and the chocolate lab have joined the black lab in the purebred lineup. Even those from the same litter can be completely different from one another. So, one puppy might be exactly like their Labrador Retriever parent, whilst their brother has more of a Doberman influence. Luckily, we will cover all of the options in this guide. Your puppy could have the long water-friendly tail of the Lab. Or she could have the shorter triangular shaped tail of the Doberman. The very short tail on adult Dobermans is always a result of docking during puppyhood. When it comes to ears, you can expect longer, floppier ears to predominate in any Doberman Lab mix litter. Since both the Doberman and the Labrador purebred breeds have this ear type naturally. You can read more about this here. Doberdor Size In terms of size, you can be reasonably certain your puppy will grow up to weigh anywhere from 50 to 80 pounds and stand anywhere from 21 to 27 inches high at the shoulder. Males being larger than females in most cases. Doberman Lab Mix Coat Type One area where there continues to be a great deal of variance in Doberman and Lab mix puppies is in appearance, especially when it comes to the Doberador coat. A purebred Doberman has a short, neat, sleek coat that sheds very little and needs only regular brushing for maintenance. A purebred Labrador Retriever, on the other hand, could safely be called a shedding machine. Their coats are mid-length to long, double layered and thick, with an oily feel due to the water-resistant coating on each hair. Their coats require regular grooming and brushing just to keep them under control, let alone neat. A Doberdor puppy could have a short but shaggy coat, a long but thin coat, non-oily or somewhat oily hair, a non-shedding or a shedding coat. Color Variations Coat color can also vary a great deal from one Doberdor puppy to the next. Labradors have three coat colors: black, chocolate and yellow. So here, you will just have to wait and see what coloration the genetic melting pot produces in your Doberdor puppy! For instance, a black Lab Doberman mix could come out with tan markings, or even be fawn if it takes after a fawn Doberman parent. And incredibly different in others. Both purebred dogs are known to be loving, loyal and strongly bonding. They are also affectionate to their owners, athletic and energetic. Not to mention intelligent and trainable. You can therefore expect your Doberman Lab mix to display these qualities when she grows. But, they also have an important significant difference. The Doberman is highly protective and has a guarding nature. Labs are the exact opposite. Being happy to welcome anyone, from friends to burglars, into the home with open arms. When you cross the two, there is no way to know whether your pup will be a social bunny or a bit of an introvert. Socialization From the day your pup arrives home make sure you have lots of visitors, adults and children. Take them to a number of places, with crowds and strangers. This is very important, even with a mixed breed. Because there is just no way of guessing which trait will be expressed. If the consistency and discipline of training and socialization is not there, all of the risks inherent in both purebred parent breeds can manifest in a Doberman cross Labrador puppy as well. Lack of ongoing training and socialization will produce aggression, inability to distinguish friend from foe, destructiveness, willful disobedience, separation anxiety and other unwelcome behavioral issues. The reward based nature of these will bring out the best in them. Punishing a potentially aggressive dog is dangerous, as it can mask signs of upset that the dog would otherwise use to show you they are unhappy. You can find out all about the demise of the use of dominance in this article on Alpha Dog Theory. But, no matter which parent breed your puppy takes after, they will need plenty of exercise every day. Doberman Lab puppies grow into energetic, alert dogs. Training will provide some exercise, but they will also need something more formal. This could be walks, hikes, retrieval games, swimming, and more! Labrador Doberman Mix Health and Care There is no dog breed on the planet that is completely healthy. This is simply not possible. Both Dobermans and Labrador Retrievers have their own unique set of known health issues. For this reason, it is critical to be aware of breed-specific inherited health conditions for each parent, both so you can watch for signs of these health issues manifesting and so you can do genetic testing to ensure you pick the healthiest Doberman Lab mix puppy. Doberman Pinscher Health Genetic testing can identify some of these issues in the parent. The breeder should have run heart cardiac , vision, hip and general DNA tests on the Doberman parent before mating. The main health issues potentially occurring in Doberman dogs are: Heart disease cardiomyopathy. Canine hip dysplasia. An adult Doberman can weigh up to 80 pounds and could measure more than 27 inches tall. The Doberman has a stately appearance, and this contributes to its height and stature. Meanwhile, a Labrador Retriever weighs from 70 to 80 pounds and can grow up to 25 inches tall. At present, there are no dog organizations and dog breed registries that recognize the Lab mixed with Doberman dog breed. This means puppies are likely to share similar characteristics to their parents. Owners of mixed breeds say the pedigree dogs of today were the designer dogs of the past. Men created pedigrees by crossing different breeds of dog. Pedigree registers have been closed for a long period of time. Are Mixed Breeds Healthier? It is claimed that breeding pedigrees from a closed register narrows the gene pool of these breeds. As a result purebred dogs are prone to a variety of health issues. Opening the gene pool by creating mixed breeds helps to increase the health and vitality of those puppies. Make sure your mixed breed puppy is bred by a reputable breeder. By that we mean a breeder who carries out genetic health tests on the parents and provides a good level of care. German tax collector Louis Dobermann wanted a dog which could provide him with companionship and protection. Using a range of breeds including Greyhounds, Rottweilers, and Manchester Terriers, the Doberman was born. It was recognized by the American Kennel Club in .Now we know a little bit more about the origins of both these breeds. This double coat maintains body temperature and repels water. Dobermans have a smooth, short coat. Due to this thin coat, they find it harder to keep warm in winter. So, both Labradors and Dobermans have short coats. As a result you can be confident that your Doberman Lab cross will end up with the same. This means they only need a quick brush to keep their coats in tip-top condition. Whilst Labradors are also short-haired, they shed seasonally. This is due to their double coat. Your Doberman Lab mix puppy may end up with a double coat. Doberman Lab Mix Temperament A mixed breed puppy could end up with the temperament of either parent breed or a mix of both! It is a common trait of the breed. As is their cheerful disposition, and desire to please. Labradors often suffer from anxiety if left home alone all day. Anxiety in dogs can result in destructive behavior. Early examples of the Doberman were known to be sharp and more aggressive than many other breeds. Now though, careful and considerate breeding has prioritized a softer temperament. Your Doberman Pinscher Lab mix puppy could end up with the keen and easy going nature of a Lab. On the other hand it might have the sharper intellect of a Doberman, or something in between. Neither of these breeds cope well with being left home alone. As a result, you can be fairly certain your pup will share this trait. Doberman Labrador Socialization and Training Labradors are typically easy to train and enjoy interacting with all members of their family. Hip dysplasia and PRA can both also affect Dobermans. As a result, checking the scores of both parents is imperative. Affected dogs can potentially suffer from excessive bleeding. Many Dobermans carry the gene for this disease. Fortunately, genetic tests are available to show whether a dog is clear, a carrier, or affected by vWd. Albinism in Dobermans is caused by a genetic mutation. Since , the AKC has had a tracking system which identifies carriers of this gene. In the linked article, Davieds recommends that people do not breed dogs with this gene. Treatment involves a range of non-surgical and surgical options. Dilated Cardiomyopathy DCM affects the heart walls, and can result in heart failure. Incidence increases with age. Bloat can commonly affect deep-chested dogs like Dobermans. Doberman Labrador Breeders This mixed breed has yet to hit the popularity levels of some other crosses. Though, there are still reputable breeders producing lovely pups. Health testing for issues which affect both parent breeds should definitely be a priority. Any breeder should be happy to talk through these tests with you in detail. They can show you any results and certificates for both parents. They should also allow you to spend time with both the litter of puppies and the parents. This is certainly true if you have experience with either of these breeds. Most importantly, you should be able to provide a safe and stable home. A shelter will usually arrange genetic testing at your request. Any rescue center may carry out a full home check. These puppies will grow into medium dogs, with high levels of energy and intelligence. With the right training and exercise, they could be the perfect family dog. They have anti-inflammatory features beneficial to the joints and are perfect for older dogs or those suffering from mobility problems like hip and elbow dysplasia. Xylitol is found in small amounts of raspberries. To put this in perspective, a 10kg dog must consume at least 32 cups of raspberries to be killed. My dog adores raspberries, and she enjoys them frozen when the weather is hot. Strawberries Strawberries are a scrumptious fruit to eat. You can get them all year long, and my dog dotes on them. These berries contain abundant fiber, vitamins C, B1, B6, K, folic acid, potassium, iodine, and magnesium. Antioxidants flourish in strawberries and can help with weight loss, slow aging, and improve the immune system. Given their sweetness, they have low sugar and calorie content. Watermelon Watermelon is safe to eat for Golden Retrievers — if you take a few precautions! They are high in vitamins A, B6, and C and fiber, which helps with digestion. They also contain potassium, which helps reduce blood pressure and the risk of heart disease and stroke. Everybody, including my dog, enjoys a cool slice of watermelon in the summer. Break it into cubes to serve. Are you looking to buy something for your dog? Make sure to check out my favorite dog gear below. Read the full disclosure here. However, not all fruits are safe for dogs to eat, and some are downright dangerous! So, what fruits can golden retrievers eat? Golden retrievers can eat a variety of different fruits without experiencing any side effects. In fact, my golden is munching a slice of apple right now! Still, while apples are perfectly safe for goldens, other fruits such as grapes, raisins, cherries, and avocados contain toxic substances that can poison your dog! Keep on reading to learn what fruits are safe for golden retrievers to eat and how to feed them to your pooch. Fruits can also be a tasty reward for good behavior and serve as a low-fat and low-calorie treat for overweight and senior dogs. Here are six fruits your golden retriever can eat! Blueberries Blueberries are a superfood rich in antioxidants and one of the healthiest fruits you can feed to your golden retriever! These tiny purple berries are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals but are at the same time low in fat and calories, which makes them an ideal healthy snack for both young and old golden retrievers. Blueberries contain high amounts of phytochemicals, naturally occurring compounds found in plants that have numerous health benefits, including the ability to fight certain cancers. Feed fresh or frozen blueberries to your golden retriever as treats. You can freeze and serve blueberries as refreshing treats on hot summer days. Also, you can mash fresh blueberries and serve them with plain yogurt or simply sprinkle them over one of the best dog foods for golden retrievers. Bananas Golden retrievers can also eat bananas! When fed in moderation, this tropical fruit is a low-calorie treat for dogs and is also full of essential vitamins and minerals. Bananas are an excellent source of potassium, magnesium, and vitamins C and B6. This yellow fruit is high in fiber, too, which supports good digestion and can be beneficial if your golden retriever is suffering from gastrointestinal problems. Since most canines love to eat bananas, they are an excellent alternative to fatty commercial dog treats. Remember to only feed peeled bananas to your golden retriever! Additionally, eating too many bananas can cause a stomach upset in dogs since they are high in sugar. Thus, you should only feed your golden retriever bananas in moderation as an occasional treat. Besides giving your golden a piece of banana as a treat, you can also mash it and mix it with dog food. Alternatively, for hot summer days, you can freeze a whole banana, peel it, and slice it before serving it to your dog as a refreshing treat. Apple Apples are safe for golden retrievers to eat and are an amazing source of antioxidants, potassium, and vitamins C and A. This crunchy fruit is low in calories and full of fiber, which makes it an ideal treat for overweight dogs who are on a diet. However, since apples contain a lot of sugar, eating a whole apple might be too much for your golden retriever. Eating too many apples can result in a tummy ache and diarrhea, so be sure to only feed them in moderation as a special crunchy treat. Keep the seeds away when feeding apples to your golden. Apple seeds contain small amounts of cyanide, a toxin that can be dangerous for your dog when consumed in large amounts. Remove the tough core, seeds, and stem, peel the apple, and then cut it into bite-sized pieces before serving it to your dog. Cantaloupe Full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, the cantaloupe is safe for golden retrievers to eat in moderation as a tasty treat. Besides being low in calories, this delicious melon has high water content, making it ideal for keeping your dog hydrated on hot summer days. However, there are some risks associated with feeding cantaloupe to golden retrievers you need to know about! First of all, cantaloupe rings can cause stomach upset and intestinal blockage, and they are also a choking hazard due to their hard texture. Also, cantaloupe is high in sugar and may not be a good choice for a diabetic dog or a pup on a diet. If you decide to feed cantaloupe to your golden, remove the rinds and the seeds before cutting the cantaloupe into bite-size pieces and serving it to your pooch. Strawberries Strawberries are another tasty fruit you can feed to your golden retriever! Low in calories but full of fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins C, B1, B6, K, and folic acid, strawberries are a healthy treat for dogs. Feeding strawberries to your golden occasionally may even boost their immune system, slow down the aging process, and help with weight management. Before serving, wash the strawberries thoroughly and cut them into small pieces to make them easier to digest and prevent choking. Pineapple Both puppies and adult golden retrievers can eat pineapple as a delicious treat in moderation. If your pooch likes the sweet yet tangy flavor, pineapple can be a great source of essential vitamins and minerals. Ripe pineapple is full of vitamins C and B6, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate. This tropical fruit is also a great source of minerals including potassium, copper, manganese, iron, and magnesium. All of these nutrients make a pineapple a wonderful snack for your canine companion and a great way to boost their overall health. When feeding pineapple to your dog, remove the spiky skin and the tough central core, as they can pose a choking hazard and lead to intestinal blockage if swallowed. Also, pineapple is rich in natural sugar, and eating too much of it can cause constipation or diarrhea. To take full advantage of everything pineapple has to offer to your dog, feed your pup a few bite-sized chunks as an occasional treat. Fruits are natural sources of essential nutrients that are preservative-free, thus keeping the dog healthy in the most natural way possible. Fruits provide the following nutrients: Macronutrients These are the proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that a dog needs in abundance for the maintenance of muscle mass, fat layers, energy reserves, and procurement of energy. Vitamins These natural compounds are essential for the maintenance of different body systems of a dog such as the immune, circulatory, and skeletal systems and vision. Minerals These include the basic elements that we call electrolytes viz sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, etc. Although required in small quantities, their absence can lead to severe organ dysfunctions. Fibers Fibers are insoluble plant compounds that cannot be digested but they absorb a lot of water. Thus, they give bulk or volume to feces, decreasing the chances of diarrheal stools and allowing easy passage of feces through the digestive system. Too much fiber, however, can lead to constipation so that should be kept in mind. But some fruits like oranges and bananas are rich in calories while others like cucumbers contain too few of them. So it becomes important to know how much fruit to give and whether to give it as a meal or a post-meal snack. Antioxidants Antioxidants are a variety of compounds that help detoxify toxins and reduce inflammatory mediators thus minimizing the damage to the body tissues by foreign and innate chemicals and reducing signs of natural aging. Fruits and vegetables are great sources of antioxidants and should be included in the diet. Be sure you know how often to feed your Golden Retriever puppy so you do not overfeed them. Thus, they help maintain muscle mass, and blood cell count, aid in digestion, regulate vision, and all this while providing adequate calories for everyday activities. Peaches These contain a lot of fibers that give bulk to the stool, allowing it to pass easily through the gut without much straining. This makes them also a good food during diarrhea bouts. Peaches also provide some quantities of protein, sodium, and sugar. It is very easy to remove the seeds and leaves from peaches as most of it is just juicy flesh that your dog will like a lot. The fiber contained in them makes them good for the tummy. Plums also are a good source of calories so they will be a good pre-workout snack for your Goldies too. Peeling plums is not required as dogs generally can eat their skin, however, you can just cut them into smaller pieces so they are easy to chew and digest. Apple No list of fruits is ever complete without the mention of apples. Their vitamin C content makes them good for immunity. The fibers make them make your dog feel full with a small caloric intake, helping in maintaining a good weight. The number of ways apples can be given is also amazing, you can give them as small chunks alone, mix them into a salad, or make apple juice. However, apple seeds contain cyanide that is poisonous for dogs so these must be removed before serving. Strawberries We all know strawberries for their sweet taste and the fact that strawberry shake is fantastic, but did you know that strawberries also provide fibers and antioxidants? The antioxidants in them reduce inflammatory mediators and help the body recover from illnesses. Also, these slow down the aging process. Cranberries Cranberries are essentially fat-free while having moderate calories. They also contain proteins and electrolytes like sodium thus making them good for dogs to recover from strenuous activities. The sugar content provides energy while the fibers are good for the stomach. Banana Being abundant in electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, bananas help regulate the function of nerves and heart muscles. The biotin content is good for the skin and hair of your pooch. I like them for being easily digested, and providing quick calories for dogs, especially before an activity. You can give small pieces to your pooch to eat or mix bananas with other fruits in a salad. One thing to note is that too much of these can lead to weight gain as they contain a lot of calories, so give these in moderation. Apricot These tropical fruits are full of nutrients. The beta carotene in them helps in vision while vitamin C makes the immune system stronger. They are also full of electrolytes like copper and potassium that help regulate cellular activities. Plus, they contain adequate fibers. Before giving your pooch apricots, make sure you have removed the seeds and leaves as they contain cyanide and can be toxic to your pooch. Pear Most of you already know that pears are a good source of fiber and water to help with loose stools but their nutritional value is little known. Pears are rich in potassium, copper, and magnesium, these electrolytes are required for the normal functioning of cellular enzymes and for maintaining the electrical activity of nerves. It is easy to cut pears into smaller chunks before giving them to your pooch, also you can freeze them during summer and serve them cool to fight off the summer heat. Pineapple Pineapples are just beautiful to look at but are a very nutritious fruit for dogs. They are a good source of vitamin C, provide moderate fibers, and are low in fats. Their caloric content makes them a good snack before sports while they are juicy enough to provide some water as well. With that, pineapples provide sodium, potassium, and magnesium to help in electrolyte balance. However, make sure you remove the crown and peel off the skin and give your dog thin slices to eat. Persimmon These sweet fruits provide manganese, folic acid, and beta-carotene to name a few micronutrients. Antioxidants and vitamin C help keep your dog young and healthy by fighting off inflammatory compounds and improving immunity. I like to give persimmons to my dog as treats every now and then after I have removed the seeds. Clementine Clementine is a hybrid citrus fruit that is rich in vitamin C with some quantities of vitamin B6, potassium, and dietary fibers. I use these as snacks for my GRs and serve them from time to time. If your dog likes oranges, it would definitely like them as well. Melon Melons contain folate and niacin which are good for nerve tissue development. They also contain enough fibers to help you with digestion. Contrary to the general belief, melons are not high in calories despite being sweet because their volume is due to their high water content. This also makes them good food to fight dehydration in summer. Their seeds are pretty much harmless but I prefer removing them as they are a nuisance in the mouth and my dog prefers the pure flesh part to eat. Kiwi Kiwis are good for fighting off infections as they contain antioxidants and are rich in vitamin C. Also, they contain adequate electrolytes. The seeds are easy to remove and you can serve them in slices or make icy popsicles in summer by freezing .Lime Although these provide copper, potassium, iron, and calcium, Limes are not a major source of these elements and their high citric acid content makes them unhealthy for the stomach when given in excess. Plus, their sour taste makes them not a favorite snack for a lot of Goldies. Still, if you find your dog liking Limes, you can give these in moderation after peeling off the skin. Grapefruit You can add these to your fruit mixture for GRs in small quantities due to their high citric acid levels. They have a similar taste to lime and not all pooches will like them so have to be careful with these. Tangerine Another citrus fruit that is abundant in vitamin C is tangerine although known by different names across the world. Dates Despite being sweet, dates are good for the health of your dog as they contain vitamins A, B, and C with a lot of fiber while being cholesterol free. As mentioned before, these aid in maintaining eyesight, skin, and hair growth. The calcium content is good for keeping the bones healthy and the potassium keeps the electrolyte balance in the blood. Sugars in dates are quick to be digested and available for usage, thus they can be given for a quick boost in energy before any exercise. Coconut Golden Retrievers can eat the fleshy part of the coconut after removing the husk and hard coat. This is rich in essential oils that are good for the hair and skin of the pooch. Also, coconuts contain antioxidants that reduce toxins in the blood and slow the aging of cells. Dogs with tree allergies will rarely be allergic to coconuts as they do not have most of the proteins involved in inflammation. Orange Oranges are a big source of vitamin C, keeping the immune system of your pooch healthy. Also, they provide a lot of water and some fibers to ease digestion. However, not all dogs like their taste, so you need to do your experiments with this fruit to see whether your pooch is a fan or not. Due to their citric acid content and high sugars, oranges should be given in moderation. These are harmless in the amount you would naturally give to your dog. Folic acid and vitamin content make them good for immunity, skin health, and nerve tissue maintenance. Being rich in antioxidants makes them good for dogs that are ill and would result in quicker recovery. Also, they contain a lot of electrolytes like copper, manganese, potassium, and magnesium. Blackberries Blackberries are not just soft and juicy but also contain many antioxidants, helping your pooch fight off infections and people, the cells, and in turn the dog, young and healthy. Moderate amounts of plant fibers increase the stool volume and help in voiding without much straining. Blackberries can also be given in summer as frozen berries as snacks that also help cool your dog. Blueberries These small little bluish purple berries are rich in antioxidants and vitamins that help protect your dog from inflammatory mediators and age-related health issues. Also, these are delicious while being low in sugar so you can easily give them to your dog as snacks without worrying that it might gain weight. Cantaloupe This fruit belongs to the family of melons and is super soft to eat and sweet to taste. Cantaloupes are rich in electrolytes such as sodium, magnesium, and potassium which help regulate cellular function. Also, cantaloupes contain some fibers which are good for the gut. This is a particularly soft fruit that you can easily cut into pieces to serve your dog without the need for softening it further. Cucumber Botanically regarded as fruit, cucumbers are a great source of fiber with very low calories so we can use them for dogs that need bulk in their stools and need to lose weight. Plus, they contain water mostly, thus helping prevent dehydration. Dragon Fruit Also known as pitaya, this fruit is native to America that is rich in proteins, fiber, iron, and magnesium. Iron helps in maintaining red blood cell function while magnesium along with other electrolytes keeps the cellular electrical activity intact. You would need to peel off the pink layer and give the inner white fleshy fruit in small pieces to your dog. Fruits That Are Toxic To Golden Retrievers Some fruits have chemicals that are toxic to Golden Retrievers and most other dog breeds and your pooch needs to be kept away from them. Grapes Grapes can be toxic to most dogs as they cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This is usually mild but still, you should avoid giving your dog grapes. Tomatoes Unripe tomatoes contain tomatine and solanine which are poisonous to dogs and lead to vomiting and diarrhea. When severe enough, it can lead to dehydration, lethargy, and circulatory collapse, hence these should be avoided by all dogs. Ripe tomatoes are safer but they have oxalate in them which can combine with calcium in the blood to form calcium oxalate stones in the kidney. They also decrease calcium absorption from the gut by making insoluble complexes. Thus, tomatoes should be given in moderation only once in a while. Raisins Raisins are toxic just like grapes but more potent and they can lead to vomiting in your Goldies leading to lethargy, weakness, and dehydration. Hence, these should be avoided in dogs. Avocados Persin is present in avocados which leads to diarrhea and vomiting thus leading to severe dehydration. Too much of it can lead to the death of your pooch. Hence, all parts of avocados whether the seeds, flesh, or stem should never be given to dogs. Cherries All parts of cherries contain cyanide, a poison that causes disruption of cellular function leading to hypoxia, and can cause instant death in large amounts. Yes, they can, fruits cover almost all the nutrients needed by a Golden Retriever, but these should be given in small portions every day in the form of small slices that are easy to chew and digest. However, having fruits every day can become mundane for the dog. The way I prefer is to rotate different fruits on several days and then have a fruit-free interval for a couple of days where I give my dog meat or dog food, sometimes with vegetables, and then introduce fruits again. Also, most fruits are rich in sugars while being poor in proteins. Such a diet will lead to muscle wasting in dogs with the deposition of abundant fats. This will make your pooch weak and prone to cardiovascular illnesses. The best way is to have a balance between the different types of foods a GR can eat like fruits, vegetables, meat, and dog food. This reduces any chances of over or undernutrition and keeps the dog fit and healthy. Moreover, if you want to vary the diet, you can follow my list of vegetables that golden retrievers can eat. Final Words — Wrapping Up Fruits are an excellent source of macro and micronutrients for Golden Retrievers and come in a vast variety for the GRs to have and enjoy. However, some fruits are toxic and need to be avoided. Read the article to know about the many fruits that GRs can have and why these are essential.
Although she stands no more than 10 inches tall and weighs between 4—6 pounds, the Toy Poodle has a big, playful personality that can fill up a room. While frequently associated with France, Standard Poodles were first developed in Germany, where they were used in duck hunting. They have lower exercise needs than many other dog breeds, but still benefit from a daily walk and play session. Poodles of all sizes have curly coats with extensive grooming needs. Their coat grows continuously, calling for a trim every four to six weeks. However, there is no such thing as a completely "hypoallergenic" dog. People with allergies should spend time with the breed before officially bringing home a Toy Poodle puppy. But during this long life , they are predisposed to a few health issues that may require care. Pet parents may benefit from investing in pet insurance early in life. Progressive Retinal Atrophy Progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a group of diseases that cause a breakdown of the photoreceptor cells rods and cones on the retina. Initially, the dog may have difficulty seeing in the dark, but the condition can cause blindness over time. PRA is an inherited disease and there are currently no effective treatments available. Patellar Luxation The patella kneecap is a small bone that normally sits in a groove within the femur at the knee. In dogs with patellar luxation, the patella moves luxates outside of its assigned groove when the knee is flexed. This movement can cause discomfort and may eventually lead to arthritis. Many pets will skip or run on three legs when the patella is out of place. While some cases will correct themselves, in more severe cases the patella remains out of place. In mild cases, joint supplements such as fish oils and glucosamine or anti-inflammatory medications are used to control pain and prevent arthritis. In more severely affected dogs, surgery may be recommended. This causes pain and limping occur as the bone breaks down. In some cases, pain can be controlled with medications. In severe cases, surgery to remove the head of the femur may be recommended. Symptoms include visible debris, redness, odor, head shaking, and scratching. If any of these signs are noted, take your dog to the veterinarian for an exam. In most cases, ear infections can be resolved by cleaning the ear and with topical medications. Toy Poodles develop ear infections more often than most other breeds. This may be partly due to Poodles having long ear canals with excess curly hair to trap in moisture and debris. Trimming not plucking the hair from the ear may help reduce the incidence of ear infections. Dogs with chronic or recurring ear infections frequently have allergies that should be addressed. Dental Disease Dental disease is one of the most common conditions seen in dogs as they age, especially in small breeds like the Toy Poodle. Dental disease occurs when bacterial tartar and plaque build up, leading to inflammation of the tissues around the teeth—and eventually to tooth and bone decay. Daily tooth brushing with a dog-specific toothpaste is the best way to prevent dental disease, though some diets, treats, and chew toys also help prevent plaque and tartar. Tracheal Collapse Tracheal collapse occurs when the trachea commonly called the windpipe flattens. This happens due to weak cartilage rings or the sagging of a membrane along the trachea. Most cases are treated using medications, but in severe cases where breathing is impeded, surgery may be necessary. Toy poodles are likely genetically predisposed to tracheal collapse. When on walks, use a harness instead of a collar, as pressure on the trachea can cause further damage. The condition causes a deficiency in a protein called the von Willebrand factor, which is necessary for platelets to stick together and form a clot. In dogs that are deficient in this protein, the blood may have difficulty clotting, which can lead to bleeding from the nose, vulva, bladder, or gums. Additionally, dogs with this condition may bleed for a long time after trauma or surgery. If there is concern about VWD, a screening test may be performed. This test measures how long it takes for a small cut in the mouth to stop bleeding. If the time is longer than usual, additional testing is needed to confirm VWD. Because some dogs with VWD do not have notably prolonged bleeding until later in adulthood, blood levels of von Willebrand factor can be measured to help with diagnosis. Most veterinarians recommend testing for VWD prior to any planned surgery, including spays, neuters, and dewclaw removals. Puppies should be fed a diet formulated specifically for puppies or designated for all life stages. For Toy Poodle adults, dental-focused diets may be recommended by your veterinarian to help prevent dental disease. Toy poodle puppies, however, should eat three to four small meals per day on a consistent schedule to help maintain their blood sugar. Additionally, the feeding guide labels on the dog food provides valuable information for pet parents. Just remember: In small breeds like the Toy Poodle, calories in treats add up quickly. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in skin and joint supplements , fish oil, and even in some specially formulated dog foods. These fatty acids act as natural anti-inflammatories that help support the skin, coat, kidneys, joints, and heart. They are playful and self-confident when socialized at a young age. While relatively calm, Toy Poodles enjoy playtime and exercise with the family. The breed is gentle with children and other pets, though all interactions between dogs and kids should be supervised. Because these pups are so tiny, they can accidentally be hurt during playtime. Toy Poodles have lower exercise needs than many other dog breeds, but still benefit from a daily walk and play session. Toy Poodle Behavior Toy Poodles bond closely to their families and may develop separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. They can also be sensitive to stress, and sudden changes in the home environment may lead to gastrointestinal upset. Additionally, because Poodles are so smart, they need mental stimulation to keep themselves entertained—and out of trouble. Bored dogs are more likely to bark, jump, be destructive, or misbehave. Toy Poodle Training Toy poodles want to please their owners. Paired with their smarts, this makes them an easy breed to train. As always, training is most successful when based on positive reinforcement with praise and tasty treats. Fun Activities for Toy Poodle Obedience training. Toy poodles double down on the froofroo rep with their tiny size and by sometimes sporting those fancy haircuts. But trust us, poodles are more than happy to get down and dirty. In fact, poodles started life as hunting dogs for the rich and famous in Europe. What made them so popular, however, is their incredible intelligence. Generally regarded as one of the smartest dog breeds , poodles are highly trainable, extremely eager to please people, and love being the center of attention through tricks and activities. None of that has changed over the years: The poodle consistently ranks as one of the 10 most popular breeds in the world. Appearance Toy, miniature , and standard poodles are all the same breed of dog, so they'll look more or less the same—except for their size. Toy poodles are the smallest of the three, standing no more than 10 inches tall and generally weighing right around 5 pounds. All three classifications of poodle have squarish bodies, generally about as long as they are tall. Poodles have a proud bearing, with heads kept high and their large, dark-colored eyes looking alert. Poodle coats come in a stunning array of colors from black, through the browns and yellow colors all the way to white. Bi-colored coats are also seen, though not hugely common. Poodles don't shed much , making them great for owners with allergies. While there aren't technically any hypoallergenic dogs , most people will find toy poodles close enough to not really quibble over it. Additionally, groomers can style a poodle's fur many different ways, and the breed has become famous for its outlandish show cuts. They tend to consider themselves a vital part of the family, have strong personalities, and learn things in a flash. They will get legitimately disgruntled if they think they're being left out of family activities. Of course, this temperament is kind of a double-edged sword. Toy poodles are devoted family pets who love to be the center of attention, learn tricks, and take walks. They're excellent in agility and obedience training and will play with children for hours. Because of their extreme intelligence, poodles are even quick to learn how to engage in more complex games such as hide and seek. On the flip side, poodles can develop common stress behaviors associated with separation anxiety. If you leave them alone for too long or don't give them the attention they deserve, these pups can be passive aggressive and do things they know you don't like—while you're there to watch. The toy poodle's teensy-tiny size makes it tempting to carry him everywhere, and he's so cute that it's no surprise owners are tempted to spoil him rotten. But, again, poodles are brilliant. A toy poodle who is carried everywhere will start to expect to be carried everywhere. As a result, every poodle owner should take full advantage of the breed's brilliance and eagerness to please, and obedience train their pet as quickly as possible. Living Needs Here is where the toy poodle's aptitude as an ideal family pet really shines. While poodles can be active dogs and will require some kind of daily exercise, toy poodles can get all their needs taken care of right there on the living room floor. Nichols says these little dogs will be happy with whatever type and amount of exercise their owner provides. Their tiny size makes them marvelous apartment-dwellers , and their innate desire to be lapdogs makes them great for seniors and people with mobility issues. Poodles of all sizes make great therapy dogs , and toy poodles in particular will love sitting near you for hours at a time. Toy poodles do great in households with other dogs, and the breed's lower prey drive , high intelligence, and friendly attitude make them ideal for houses with cats as well. Poodles love children and are eager to play, but most vets and breeders will steer households with children under the age of 10 toward the miniature or standard varieties, simply because the toy poodles are so small. They can be easily hurt by a falling child or by being handled too roughly. Always supervise children when they play with any dog and teach them how to properly interact with pets. Care No breed is perfect, and for poodles the biggest setback is going to be their grooming needs. That coat that is so shed-free and allergy-friendly? It's going to need brushing. A lot of brushing —ideally, every day. Because his hair curls in on itself, it's extremely prone to matting and, if left unchecked, can cause skin infections and have to be shaved off entirely. Aside from the brushing, poodles will need a bath and haircut every four to six weeks. While show dogs have a variety of complicated cuts to choose from, most non-show owners opt for a more standard sporting cut because of its ease to maintain. Like all dogs, you'll need to trim his nails regularly. Special attention should be paid to the ears , as their hair will grow up inside the ear canal, trapping wax and dirt and leading to infections. Because toy varieties have the same number of teeth as other poodle varieties but their mouths are smaller, it's easy for food to get trapped and decay to occur rapidly. Health Though the three varieties of poodles are the same breed, they do not suffer from the same conditions. While the standard poodle will be more prone to bloat , toy poodles can be slightly more susceptible to blood clotting disorders including Von Willebrand's disease and hemophilia , Beck says. Finally, smaller dogs can have a higher propensity for dental problems. In addition to being at greater risk for tooth decay , they don't lose their puppy teeth as easily as bigger dogs, Beck says. Reputable toy poodle breeders will conduct all health tests recommended by the Canine Health Information Center. History The poodle is the national dog of France, which is why you'll hear many people refer to the standard poodle as the "French poodle. Today in France, the poodle is known as the caniche, which translates to "duck dog. Toy poodles began to see favor by the late 18th century, appearing in artwork and in the courts of French aristocracy. The American Kennel Club recognized the poodle as a registered breed in .Jinkee , a 5-year-old red toy poodle, has more than 70, followers on Instagram. Was this page helpful? It is approximately the same length as the height at the withers. The skull is moderately rounded with a slight but definite stop. It has a long, straight muzzle. The dark, oval-shaped eyes are set somewhat far apart and are black or brown. The ears hang close to the head and are long and flat. Both the front and back legs are in proportion with the size of the dog. The topline is level. The tail is set and carried high. It is sometimes docked to half its length or less to make the dog look more balanced. Dewclaws may be removed. The oval-shaped feet are rather small and the toes are arched. The coat is either curly or corded. While it does not make the written show standard, some breeders are breeding parti-colored Poodles. See grooming for different types of Poodle clips. Temperament The Toy Poodle is remarkably intelligent. Highly responsive, it is said to be one of the most trainable breeds. Sweet, cheerful, perky and lively, it likes to be with people. Delightful, very amusing and keen. Socialize these dogs well. They make very good watchdogs for their size. Without the proper type and amount of exercise they may be high-strung and timid. Toy Poodles are generally good with other pets and dogs. Unless given rules to follow and limits as to what they are and are not allowed to do, this breed will tend to bark a lot. Do not let this small dog develop Small Dog Syndrome , human induced behaviors where the dog believes he is pack leader to humans. This causes varying degrees of behavior issues , including, but not limited, to snapping, growling, guarding , demanding, untrustworthiness with children and sometimes adults, sensitive, nervous, reserved with strangers and obsessive barking, as the dog tries to tell the humans what it is HE wants THEM to do. This little dog can be good with children, however is usually recommended for older children who know how to display leadership skills. The reason is that most humans treat the dog in such a way that makes it unsure just who the pack leader is in the human-dog relationship. The dog, in his mind, is convinced HE is the leader to humans. Height, Weight Height: up to 10 inches .The Toy Poodle is 10 inches or under at the highest point of the shoulders. Any Poodle that is more than 10 inches at the highest point of the shoulders cannot compete in the AKC show ring as a Toy Poodle. Health Problems A long-lived breed, Poodles are, nevertheless, subject to many genetic diseases. Eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy can cause blindness. Skin conditions, possibly due to unskilled use of clippers. Brown Poodles tend to become prematurely gray. Living Conditions Toy Poodles are good for city life as well as country living. Given enough exercise, they are not active indoors. They will lie right next to you and are more sedate when indoors, although they love to play outdoors and are a highly intelligent breed, so they do like lots of thoughtful activities to stimulate their mentality. They will do okay without a yard. Exercise These are active little dogs that need a daily walk. Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs, however, as with all breeds, play will not fulfill their primal instinct to walk. Dogs that do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to display behavior problems. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe, open area off lead, such as a large, fenced-in yard. Their intelligence is one of their predominant features, and is often showcased during obedience training. They need mental stimulation, like challenging games and toys , to keep their busy minds occupied. The Toy Poodle may also be suspicious of strangers and slow to warm up to new people. This dog breed can adapt to a wide range of living situations due to their small size. As a matter of fact, they have trouble dealing with any kind of alone time. As such, the Toy Poodle is an excellent companion animal for people who love a little company. There are a few health conditions that Toy Poodles are more susceptible to than other dog breeds. For example, they may suffer from eye disorders, like cataracts, or blood clotting disorders, like Hemophilia. Because of their size, they may also bear the risk of dental crowding, kneecap migration, or trachea instability. With regular visits to the veterinarian, many of these potential health concerns can be comfortably managed. Owners typically have an easy time during obedience training with Toy Poodles. Their intelligence often hastens the training process. However, they can present destructive tendencies when left to their own devices for too long. Toy Poodles have famously low-shedding coats. They lack undercoats, so their shedding is minimal. Their fur is hypoallergenic and mats rather than sheds. These pups will only need to be groomed to prevent matting and increase shine. Usually, brushing your Toy Poodle once or twice a week and grooming every six weeks is sufficient. As a small dog breed, they are more prone to developing dental disease so good dental care is important. Poodles are an active breed in general, and Toy Poodles in specific are just as active. Cherry eye Unlike us humans, our dogs have 3 instead of 2 eyelids and under that third eyelid is the nictitans gland. Though this condition does not require an emergency trip to the vet, if not addressed, a prolapsed nictitans gland reduces tear production and dry eyes. Severe cases can cause blindness. Epilepsy This is a neurological problem wherein the exact cause is hard to identify. There is no cure, instead, medications and a change to a vet-prescribed diet can help reduce the frequency and severity of the seizures. Skin infections Skin problems arising from ticks , fleas, food, or a sudden change in temperature may cause some dogs to suffer from skin allergies. The symptoms are itching, reddening of the skin, or hair loss. Hip dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a developmental condition that results from a hip deformity. Blame it on genetics, big dogs such as a German Shepherd is susceptible to this condition. One of the causes is playing around after eating a large amount of food. This requires an emergency trip to the vet. If not, a dog can die from a bloated stomach. Canine degenerative myelopathy Canine degenerative myelopathy is a disease that is caused by the breaking down of white matter in the spinal cord. This results in weakness and eventually paralysis. It commonly affects older dogs. The first few symptoms are wobbling and pain while getting up. Osteosarcoma Osteosarcoma in dogs is a very painful bone tumor in dogs. It is more commonly found among larger dog breeds rather than small dog breeds. Elbow dysplasia This disease is also a developmental abnormality where the three bones in the elbow joint fail to fit together. This is more common among larger dog breeds. Cataract Aside from age, canine cataracts can also be caused by an eye lens disease, diabetes, or nutritional deficiency. GSD-Greyhound mix puppies can inherit either of the two coat types and so their appearance will greatly depend on which parent they take after. Apart from length and texture, the coat color could also be one of a great number of possibilities. Given all these possibilities, German Shepherd-Greyhound crosses tend to look vastly different from one another. Typically, all they need is a weekly rubdown using a hound glove or a damp cloth. In contrast, those that take their coats after their German Shepherd side have double coats that shed steadily throughout the year and then more heavily twice a year. GSDs need to be brushed at least once a week, but more frequently during the shedding season. As for the rest of their grooming requirements, a Greyhound-German Shepherd mix will need regular bathing and frequent tooth brushing. Strength Even though Greyhounds are not particularly known for its strength, its offspring with a GSD will undoubtedly be a strong dog. This is not just because of its size but also because it can take its strength after its German Shepherd parent. Additionally, its size alone can make it capable of developing great strength. GSD-Greyhound crosses are expected to run somewhere between those speeds. Exercise Requirement Because German Shepherds are incredibly energetic and Greyhounds even more so, you should be ready to give the Greyhound GSD mix plenty of opportunities to exercise. Ideally, they would get at least an hour of physical exercise per day apart from having access to ample space where they can run and play independently. Apart from physical exercise, the GSD-Greyhound cross needs opportunities to use their mental faculties so that they stay on their best behavior. They need toys and activities that stimulate their brains. Generally, this need can be met through regular training exercises. Nevertheless, what they lack in intelligence, they make up for in their eagerness to please their humans. The trainability of a Greyhound German Shepherd mix will depend on which parent they take after. Although the intellect of GSD-Greyhound mixes can vary greatly, you can at least expect them to be easily housetrained and learn basic obedience with ease. Temperament German Shepherd-Greyhound crosses are confident and courageous dogs. With proper training and socialization, they can be excellent family dogs. However, because of the prey drive they might inherit from their Greyhound parent, they might need extra training and supervision if they need to share a home with smaller animals. Additionally, Greyhound-GSDs are generally even-tempered and they are known to be gentle with their family members. Health German Shepherd-Greyhound mixes are generally healthy, although they are susceptible to life-threatening bloat. Owners of this crossbreed should talk to a vet about how to avoid this condition. Additionally, hip and elbow dysplasia are conditions that the German Shepherd-Greyhound cross can inherit from their GSD parent. From the Greyhound side, the most serious health concern is a genetic condition called Greyhound Polyneuropathy. This is a progressive neurological disorder that severely affects their muscles. Lifespan A Greyhound-German Shepherd mix can be expected to live between 10 and 14 years. Like all other dogs, they can live beyond the life expectancy of their parents when they are given a balanced, high-quality diet. Ample exercise, proper hygiene, and regular vet examinations will further enable them to lead long and happy lives. By enrolling in this program, dogs that are not eligible for purebred registration and are disqualified from conformation events can participate in many other AKC events. These include canine sports like Agility , Flyball , and Diving Dogs. The GSD Greyhound mix is not very common. So, professional breeders do not have enough financial incentive to propagate this cross. Final Thoughts A Greyhound German Shepherd mix is undeniably a beautiful dog with a noble quality and a pleasing personality. Nevertheless, it is a large dog with boundless energy. As we have established, this crossbreed is a mix between a German Shepherd and a Greyhound. They are both large breeds of dog, so as you would expect, the result of this cross-breeding is also a big dog. These terms are used interchangeably to describe this crossbreed. As these dogs are a mix, no two puppies will be the same. This is because it is impossible to know what personality traits and characteristics will be taken from each breed, making every dog different. Despite this, there are a few things that you can expect from this crossbreed. The main one being its size. You can generally determine the size that a litter of puppies will grow to by looking at the parents. As both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are large breed dogs, you can rest assured that the puppies will also be large. You can also expect them to be muscular, affectionate, and loyal. Is this the right mixed breed for You? Before you welcome any dog into your home, you need to decide if this is the right breed for you. Here are some of the key things that you need to consider before making that decision: Time One of the most important things that you need to consider before buying a Shephound, or any dog for that matter, is if you have the time to dedicate to this dog. Dogs are hard work, and they require a lot of time and effort if you want them to be well-behaved and loyal. This is especially important with Shephounds as both the Greyhound and German Shepherd breeds can be nervous at times. A lot of this is down to the fact that both breeds have been treated badly historically. A lot of Greyhounds are traumatized from a history of being forced to race against their will, and because of this, it can take a lot of time for these dogs to adjust to being family pets. Likewise, a lot of German Shepherds have lived their lives as working dogs, so it can take a little while for them to adjust to being pets too. You should bear this in mind when buying a Shephound. Space Another major thing that you need to consider before bringing a Shephound into your home is whether, or not, you have the space for a dog of this size. While they may be small when they are puppies, these puppies quickly grow into large dogs, so it is very important that you have enough space in your home for them. Nothing can prepare you for quite how big these dogs are, and as they grow in your home, they can quickly shrink your house. But, these dogs are large and heavy, so they take up a lot of space. If you only have a small house, or you have a large but busy house, then you might want to consider if you have the physical space to give to this dog before bringing one home. Professional Training Finally, you need to consider your provisions for giving this breed professional dog training. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, so they will require training. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds often have a very high prey drive , and this can make them very difficult to control when you are out walking them. This can be very difficult to do, which is why you should ensure that you have access to a professional trainer to help you. But, as both Greyhounds and German Shepherds are breeds that have existed for centuries, there are lots of facts that we know about these dogs. Without a doubt, German Shepherds are one of the most striking dog breeds in the world. With just a single look, you can easily identify one of these breeds by their classic black and tan markings, wonderful gait, and simply breathtaking look. They are famous for being one of the most loyal dog breeds to exist and are also well-known for being fiercely protective of their owner and their pack. These dogs absolutely adore being outdoors, and this is one of the main reasons why they make such wonderful herding dogs. This is, after all, where their name comes from. Instead, they are better known for being used as working dogs in the military, police , and even as support dogs for people who are blind or living with other disabilities. The main reason why these dogs are so commonly used as working dogs is that they are so easy to train. German Shepherds are undoubtedly one of the most intelligent breeds on the planet. Anyone who has ever owned a German Shepherd will tell you that this breed can learn a trick after only one or two goes, they simply are that smart. They are affectionate, loyal, and kind. They really do make the perfect companion, and you know that you are never alone as long as you have a German Shepherd by your side. These dogs are energetic and healthy, and absolutely wonderful with children and other pets. This is why they are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. As we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of similarities between these two breeds, and this is why this crossbreed works so well. Just like German Shepherds, Greyhounds are also a large breed of dog. In terms of height, they are very similar, but Greyhounds are a lot thinner than German Shepherds. As Greyhounds were bred to run, they are extremely skinny, to the point where you can often see their ribs. While German Shepherd dogs are bred to be a lot bulkier. Yes, Greyhounds do look very slim, but this is because they carry absolutely zero body fat. Just by looking at a Greyhound, you can see how muscular they are, and this is partly aided by the fact that they have a very short coat. Greyhounds are most famous for being fast. These dogs have been racing dogs, and unfortunately, this practice still goes on today. Due to the shape of their body, Greyhounds are able to reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, which is why they have been used in racing. But traditionally, Greyhounds were bred as hunting dogs with the ability to hunt foxes, rabbits, and even deer. They are unbelievably calm, and will spend a lot of their time sleeping. Just like German Shepherds, Greyhounds are incredibly loving, and there is nothing that this breed likes more than cuddling up to their owner and giving them lots of wet kisses. While they will be loving to all members of their pack, Greyhounds tend to choose one member to be their person, and if that person is you then you are truly blessed. They are incredibly smart, and as long as they are trained, then these dogs will not become aggressive. This is why they make such wonderful pets. Key Characteristics of the German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Shephound We have looked at these breeds independently, but it is time that we look at them together. Every Shephound is different as it is a crossbreed, however, there are some key characteristics that you can expect. One is the fact that your puppy is going to have a lot of growing to do. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are breeds that transform a lot during the first 6 months of their life. So, this makes it difficult to tell what their coat is going to look like when they grow up. It is also partly because these two breeds have very different coats. German Shepherds have incredibly thick fur, with multiple different layers, while Greyhounds have very thin coats which help make them more aerodynamic. Due to this, it is impossible to tell exactly what your Shephounds coat is going to be. If your Shephound is a mixture of a short coat German Shepherd and a Greyhound, then you can expect the fur to be mid-way between the two. However, if your Shephound is part long-hair German Shepherd, then there is no knowing just how thick their coat will be. Gentle Something that you can almost guarantee from a Shephound is that they are going to be gentle. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are docile breeds, and they are well-known for being gentle around their owners. So, this is something that you can expect from a Shephound. But, these dogs will have moments of madness. While these dogs will be calm and gentle most of the time, there will be periods where they will be hyper. When this happens, it is important to remember that Shephounds are big dogs, and they are incredibly strong. Loyal But there is one thing which you can definitely guarantee from a Shephound, and it is their undying loyalty. So, whether you are looking for a Shephound as a guard dog or a companion, you can always trust your Shephound to be by your side. However, if you are looking for a dog to use as a guard dog, then a Shephound might not be the best choice. You would be much better off choosing a pedigree German Shepherd. But if you want a dog that has your back until the end, then a Shephound is absolutely perfect. All dogs suffer from health conditions, and the majority of breeds will have genetic predispositions to certain issues. Joint Problems The most prevalent potential health condition that your Shephound might suffer from is joint problems. In particular, hip and elbow dysplasia. This is a genetic condition where there is a deformity in the hip or the elbow, which can lead to limited mobility and arthritis as your dog ages. This is a common health issue for both German Shepherds and Greyhounds, which is why this is the condition that your dog is most likely to suffer from. In fact, this is a condition that most large dogs, and even large cats, suffer with. This condition is a degenerative disease, so the earlier that you pick up on it, the better. That way, you can treat it early and prevent your Shephound from suffering too greatly with this condition. Skin Conditions Another part of the body that both Greyhounds and German Shepherds often suffer with is their skin. Both breeds are genetically predisposed to skin conditions, so there is a fair chance that your Shephound could suffer from this too. In particular, German Shepherds are prone to allergies, which can lead to a lot of scratching and discomfort. Cherry Eye Something else that these breeds are often prone to suffering with is cherry eye. This condition displays itself as a red lump on the third eyelid. This red lump is actually an enlarged and swollen gland that has become infected due to allergies. All dogs are at risk of experiencing this, and it is a very common condition. So, just be prepared that you might have to go to your vet to get conditions like this treated if you get a German Shepherd Greyhound mix. Epilepsy The final condition that your Shephound might be prone to is epilepsy. This is a condition that a lot of Greyhounds develop, so there is a small chance that your Shephound may also suffer from this. Epilepsy affects dogs similarly to how it affects humans, so if your Greyhound Shepherd develops this condition, then they may experience seizures. Dogs can experience seizures with lots of different causes behind it. Some dogs will fit if they become too hot, or dehydrated. But, these seizures could be caused by a health condition such as epilepsy or diabetes. So, you should be prepared that this condition could also develop in your Shephound. If your German Shepherd Greyhound mix does begin to experience seizures, then you should seek veterinary advice immediately. German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Temperament One of the biggest influences on whether you will choose a dog breed, or not, is temperament. Everybody wants their dog to have a good temperament, and for their dog to be loving. This is why a lot of people purchase dogs based on the temperament of that breed. So what is the Shephound temperament like? As we have said, Greyhound Shepherds are incredibly loving dogs, and above all else, they are loyal. Fiercely loyal, in fact. Generally, these dogs have a calm temperament, and they are usually very gentle. Especially when they are around children and small animals. But, for the most part, these dogs are lovely. Walk them regularly, and train them well when they are young, and you will have a fiercely loyal companion for the rest of their life. Ability to Train Speaking of training, you may also be wondering how easy it is to train a German Shepherd Greyhound Mix. Well, as you might expect, it is usually very easy to train a Shephound. These dogs are incredibly intelligent, and because of this, they can often pick up tricks incredibly quickly. A lot of people are surprised at how quickly Shephounds can learn commands, and people are also often surprised at how early in their lives these dogs will begin learning. From as early as 8 weeks old, a German Shepherd Greyhound mix will begin listening to their owner and learning commands. So start early with training, and you will have a very well-behaved dog. Nutritional Requirements Shephounds are very large dogs, so they do have some nutritional requirements. You should avoid feeding them grains as this can lead to GDV a bloating condition , instead you should feed them lots of protein. Make sure their diet is well-balanced with protein, vitamins, minerals, and also high in calories. Exercise Requirements The amount of exercise that your German Shepherd Greyhound mix needs will differ depending on your specific dog. Greyhounds only need around 30 minutes of exercise a day, whereas German Shepherds can need up to 2 h ours. Find a happy medium and go with the amount of exercise that suits your dog. Tom Thorpe Blog Have you ever wondered how many puppies in a litter of golden retrievers? That said, if you have a female golden retriever and someday you want to let her have some litter, you are prepared and able to calculate some expenses beforehand. In this article, I will attempt to cover the question regarding how many puppies in a litter of golden retrievers. Average litter size of golden retrievers Time and again, we always say that golden retrievers are a one of a kind canine breed. The fact that they are the friendliest, affectionate, energetic, and stranger to none, these reasons are what makes the golden retrievers popular and it will become one for many years to come. Interestingly enough, the largest litter size was produced by a Neapolitan Mastiff back in .On the other hand, the largest litter ever produced by a golden retriever is 17 albeit there are no official records, only online sources that only appeared. With that, golden retrievers are capable of producing a litter between 1 to 17 young pups. We can safely assume that golden retriever breeds have an average litter size of 4 to 8 puppies. For most instances, the first litter size is somewhat smaller compared to succeeding litters. Also, this is true among golden retriever breeders. They know the ins and out of very golden retrievers. Another important fact you should keep in mind is the ratios of females and males differ. Other litter will have more females than males, while in some, males are more. In addition, there is a small chance that the puppies are of one gender only. This is because there are numerous factors that make the outcome of the litter different from any other golden retrievers and other canine breeds. Thereby the question of how many puppies in a litter of golden retriever will likely have come from these factors such as: Consider the genetic factor Every canine is different from the other, although they have some commonality if we are going to categorize them according to their breeds. But still, they have different genetic structures and they are all individual creatures. This also includes the litter size. The most common observation in regards to litter size, if the mother of your female golden retriever produces in large litter size, chances are, your female dog also will produce a large litter size. That is, of course, assuming some factors remain constant. In relation to the litter size, keep in mind that the majority of the traits largely came from a dam female dog and the small percentage came from the sire male dog. The sire has likely had an influence on the litter size. Among the sire can influence are health, age, size, breed, and genetic structures. Gene Pool Diversity At some point, the gene pool diversity will somehow affect the litter size. This again will vary from dog to dog. The fact that canine who are drawn from diverse backgrounds tend to have large litters. Diet Another factor to consider is the diet. Compared to dogs fed with substandard kibble food and supplement. Health Again, health plays a crucial role. This is because they can somehow affect and have a chance to have more puppies. That said, if the golden retriever is not healthy enough, it will inevitably affect the litter size. An ideal healthy weight for golden retrievers is usually slim, and those who are overweight are prone to health issues. Thus, giving a routine exercise and a well-balanced diet has a possibility to produce in larger litters. More particularly in the case of a male dog. Male dogs who are 5 years old and above have a smaller sperm count than those who are in ages 5 years and below. This means the litter size will also decrease. This is the reason why dog breeders who have dog show quality are often bred extremely and intensively in order to produce as many quality female dogs as possible. But, it has a more major point in influencing the size of the litter size than the male and this is actually quite true. That means, dogs over the age of 7 years will have a greater chance to produce large litters than those of young age under 5 years of age. Usually, the first litter regardless of age will likely be smaller than the succeeding production of litters to come. Also, a female golden retriever who was never been bred until the age of 5 will have a tendency to produce smaller litters that are permanent. On that note, the ideal age of female golden retrievers where there is a yield in litter size is between the age of 2 to 5 years. Generally, the larger the breed, the larger the litter size. In the case of golden retrievers, the average size of litter rangers from 4 to 8 and other dog breeds like Spaniels. The fact that genetics and other various factors in dogs alone have the possibility to increase the litter size, all these factors lead to a different outcome and are somewhat related. But can humans influence or somehow affect the size of a litter? Is there any correlation regarding this? The short answer is yes, but to a certain extent only. The long answer is, although yes, there are no guarantees as to how much can humans change the course of the litter size. Fortunately, there are things that humans may likely increase the odds. In fact, breeders who are using artificial intelligence are becoming even more rampant. Thanks to the ai, the chances of finding champion dogs both in the US alone and abroad are getting bigger. However, artificial insemination does not produce large litter sizes. Instead, it only produces a small litter size. Moreover, the kind of semen will largely affect the litter size regardless if it is frozen, chilled, or fresh. In addition, canine sperm will likely die because their semen does not freeze well. Post Breeding Management The best possible and simplest way to somewhat affect the litter size of your golden retriever is just to have the best possible care. Nothing more nothing less. Obviously, any dogs who lack proper nutrition and have an imbalanced diet will greatly decrease the chance of having a large litter size. If the golden retriever has improper housing and has nutrient deficiencies, they can absorb puppies due to lack of care. So, see to it that your female golden retriever has everything they need. Make sure to not miss any appointments in their scheduled checkups with your local vet. Give them proper nutritional needs and also groom them regularly. Care Tips for Golden Retrievers Proper Treatments The best way to secure a healthy pregnancy for your female golden retriever is to have her getting proper treatments. That means, getting treatments for fleas and worms should be consistent even while in pregnancy. Vaccinations Treatments and vaccinations are the most important and should be regularly maintained if necessary. This will guarantee that the antibodies are optimal while the female mother has a puppy bump. Consult your vet with the best possible vaccines in order to keep your dog healthy. There is some vaccination that can be administered while your dog is in pregnancy. The fact that pregnant golden retrievers or any dogs will feel become lethargic when the due is near. With having adequate exercise before their pregnancy, your dog will become fit and able to carry on while she has a puppy bump that is about to give birth. This can lead to stress and other health condition that may greatly affect their pregnancy. Final Thoughts All in all, I hope the question of how many puppies in a litter of golden retriever is completely answered. If you are still confused, the average litter size they can produce is about 4 to 8. Also, if you are a first-time pet owner who has a pregnant golden retriever, you should know what to expect and even know some basic tips regarding the proper care of your pregnant golden retriever. Keep in mind that they should stay fit and healthy plus groom them regularly. Ruth Bonneville, Winnipeg Free Press, Sept 09, Local - Eight day old golden retriever pups snuggle together Thursday afternoon after feeding from their mom, Giselle who may have broken a world record by having the most pups in one litter. Photo by RUTH. Hi Rochelle, I thought you might be interested in the recent litter here in Winnipeg. Might be a record of babes for a golden. This is a breeder who my parents got their golden boy from a few years back. A groomer and breeder from Winnipeg is trying to keep a low profile after her Golden delivered 17 pups last week. Good luck with that! That number actually shares a record for highest number in a single litter as registered by the Canadian Kennel Club. Dog breeders Damian Ward and his girlfriend Anne Kellegher had only been expecting 2-year-old Tia to give birth to a maximum of 10 puppies — not two dozen. But when Tia grew so big that she could barely move, the couple took her to the veterinarian, who decided that an immediate caesarean was vital. Two hours later, Tia had given birth to a record-breaking 24 puppies. Unfortunately, four of the puppies were too weak and died but the remaining 20 are thriving. Thankfully, ALL 17 puppers in this Golden litter, are thriving and gaining weight, and getting lots of wonderful care from their momma Giselle. Giselle feeds some of her puppies, who were born last Wednesday. Then they switch at two-hour intervals. Share this:. There are a range of factors that contribute to the overall litter size. Often genetics play an important role in the size of the litter. The size of the breed as well as the overall health of parents also effect the total litter size. Golden retrievers are considered a large breed dog, resulting in larger litters. Many sites state various different ranges. Websites, with less authority, like Ask and PetPlanet have a range of puppies per litter. Their overall average is 8. The American Kennel Club used to state that the average litter size was in the range of .However, that information can no longer be found. With smaller litters it could quite possibly be that the bitch was not bred at the proper time. Some of the eggs may not have been fertilized. The stud may have tied too early, or too late. Or it could have been possible that the sire was too old and not producing an adequate sperm count. The overall health of both parents can also be considered. It could also be a problem with the mother, such as injury, or physical defects. With litters on the larger end, sometimes they may have to be delivered cesarean. If the time of delivery is too long, some puppies may be stillborn. Cases have occurred where a puppy may be retained in the uterus causing other problems. Litters this large are generally not in the best interest of the mother. From my experience, most litters are indeed around in number. That could just be coincidental. Further litters often will have less. This is just something I have seen, but is not scientific. It is also important to note that male and female ratios can go in either directions. It is also possible to have a litter with all one gender. Our recent litter from Tina came out all female. She had eight female puppies at once. I was told by another breeder that she had a litter of 10 that were all female. It is very unlikely, but it does happen. We derived that number from hundreds of litters from various breeders. As mentioned above, the range is between 1 to 15 puppies in a litter. A breeder can find out how many puppies a female may have while pregnant via x-ray or ultrasound. An x-ray can be taken after the bones have ossified. That occurs around days of gestation. Ultrasounds can be taken around days to confirm pregnancy, but confirming the litters size is less accurate. It is however less damaging on the mother and puppies. Nov 29, Nov 5, This post may contain affiliate links. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Busy taking care of puppies! A couple of weeks ago, Raven, our Golden Retriever had her first litter of puppies. Several weeks before she had her puppies we were all curious about how many puppies Raven would have in her first litter. And what did we learn? Bring your Calmeroos Puppy the day you pick up your puppy and rub it all over his litter mates and mama. Ten years later my memory of all those puppies is still vivid. Of course in the end we came home with our first puppy, Linus! Back then the smallest litter we saw was two six-week-old black Labrador Retriever pups. Our friends at Guide Dogs of America have experienced many, many more litters than I have or probably ever will in my lifetime. I would guess they have a litter of pups at the school nearly every week sometimes two litters a week! So what did I hear from my GDA friends? The largest litter I heard about was 16 Golden Retriever puppies! Let me say that again: 16 puppies!!! The smallest litter size was 1 lonely puppy…although only children get all the attention…right, Ali Ali is my wife…an only child :? The largest litter of Golden Retrievers we found on the internet were 17 Golden pups. The Golden Retriever Forum and other sites mention Golden litters as small as one puppy. After talking to friends, and family, and doing my internet research the consensus was Raven would probably have between puppies with the outside possibilities of only 1 pup or up to 17 remote possibility of 24! We took care of litters of puppies, but the youngest pups we had were already 3 weeks old. We got those little cuties when they were about weeks old and at that age, they were a handful. I specifically remember one of the rescue leaders saying that 5 or fewer puppies are much easier to handle. That number 5 has stuck in my head for over 10 years! My fingers were crossed… Puppies from our our Golden litter! However, the day we planned on bringing her in for an X-Ray her temperature dropped which was an indication she was close to giving birth. Rather than risk her giving birth in my car on the way to the vet we opted out of the X-Ray. Raven went into labor on Wednesday, November 9th, , and at… am — Female. A good breeder will match their breeding program with your lifestyle as much as possible. They want to ensure that if they sell their pup to you, it will be an ideal match. A good breeder will get back to you quickly after meeting with potential clients so that they can develop a relationship before moving forward with any kind of sale. How can you tell if a dog is done having puppies? There are a few ways to tell when your dog is done having puppies. The first thing to remember is that you should never force your dog to give birth. If you do, the puppies could die, resulting in serious health issues for your pup. You can tell when a dog is done having puppies by having X-rays taken of her uterus. This will show how many puppies she has and when they were born. When whelping is over, the dog will relax and begin resting while caring for her puppies. This will happen briefly between puppies, but she is likely done if there have been no more pups after two hours. You can also pay close attention to how often they urinate, how often they defecate, and how long they spend lying down and resting. If you notice that these behaviors have changed significantly, she is likely done. What should a mother dog eat after giving birth? After your dog gives birth, she will need to eat a specialized diet. This will ensure that her body can recover from the intense physical exertion of pregnancy and delivery. The best diet for a mother dog is designed specifically for pregnant and lactating females. The best diet for pregnant dogs should be high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for developing all fetal tissues, including the placenta. This food should also contain vitamin E, which helps protect against oxidative damage caused by oxygen radicals; vitamin C, which is important for collagen synthesis; and a good source of protein. The protein should be sourced from animal sources such as chicken or fish instead of grains or beans because they could potentially harm the fetus if consumed during pregnancy. Lactating dogs should receive high-quality food containing adequate amounts of calcium so that their bones can remain strong while nursing their pups. How many times can you safely breed a golden retriever? A golden retriever can be bred safely up to six times. The best practice is liters per dog, but some reputable breeders cap even their fittest, best mothers at around liters so that she can be spayed while she is still young and at her healthiest. Breeders who want to keep their dogs around for a long time will do this because it allows them to continue to care for their dogs as they age. However, if you are looking for a puppy or dog who will grow up quickly, this may not be the best choice. Golden retrievers are generally very healthy dogs but require special attention during these periods. Breeding a golden retriever is a great way to keep the breed healthy and thriving, but it can also be dangerous if not done correctly. This is because your golden Retriever will likely have three or four puppies at a time. How long do golden retrievers live? The average lifespan of a golden retriever is 12 to 15 years. Golden retrievers are considered one of the longest-lived dogs, with their average lifespan being 12 to 15 years. Golden retrievers are known for their longevity and strength, which makes them an ideal breed for many people who do not want to deal with frequent vet visits or expensive medications. These breeds are typically healthy dogs and experience no health problems during their lifetime. However, some circumstances may cause your golden Retriever to develop health problems. If your dog develops any of these conditions, it will become apparent during its lifespan. They have a high energy level, so they need more exercise than other breeds. How much does a golden retriever cost? Golden retrievers are very expensive dogs. This includes everything from the initial purchase of the puppy through its training and health care in adulthood. These dogs are sometimes cheaper than golden retrievers and sometimes as expensive as golden retrievers. How many times can a golden retriever get pregnant in a year? Golden retrievers are known for their excellent health and ability to live long, productive lives. But some things can happen to make their life more difficult. This is when a female dog will ovulate release an egg from her ovary , have a period where she is fertile, and then go back into heat again pregnant. If a female dog is fertile during her cycle, she can get pregnant. Some dogs have longer cycles than others, so they can get pregnant twice a year. The average golden Retriever can get pregnant twice a year. And this depends on the individual dog. Some dogs may have three cycles in a year or even more, depending on the regularity of their periods. Some dogs experience significant stress during this time, which can make them less likely to be able to become pregnant. If you notice signs like increased panting or pacing while outdoors at night, it might be something worth checking into with your vet right away. How do you get more female puppies in a litter? Getting more female puppies in a litter is an important part of owning a dog. There are a few different ways to do this: 1. A balanced diet: Feeding your dog a balanced diet is the best way to ensure that she gets all the nutrients she needs. The best way to do this is to feed an appropriate amount of protein and fat, as well as vitamins and minerals. You should also make sure to feed your dog meals regularly throughout the day so that she always has something to eat when hungry. Puppies need lots of calories to have enough energy to grow into healthy adults. This will cause health problems later in life, such as arthritis or diabetes — which are very common in dogs who have been malnourished as puppies. Exercise: One of the best things you can do for your dog is to exercise her muscles regularly. This helps keep her body healthy and happy, but it also helps her pass on her genes more effectively. If possible, try walking or running with your dog at least once per day; if not possible, try taking them for long walks or at least once weekly. You should also ensure that any toys your dog has access to are gender-neutral so that there are no signs of discrimination by either gender towards each other within the household environment. Breeding with other dogs who are close in appearance: Besides being physically fit, being bred with another dog who looks similar to yours will increase the chances that her pups will also look similar. If your dog is getting along well with other dogs and people, it will be easier for them to adjust when their gender becomes clear. What dog breed has the most puppies? Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and their litter size can vary widely. For example, Golden Retrievers have litters that average around eight puppies, while German Shepherds tend to have litters that average around .The record for the largest-ever litter belonged to a Neapolitan Mastiff with 24 puppies. When it comes to having the most puppies, larger breeds tend to win. The average dog breed will have around 8, whereas the record for the largest litter belongs to a Neapolitan Mastiff who had 24 puppies. Larger breeds also tend to be more likely to have litters of more than one littermate. Larger dogs can have two litters a year, while smaller dogs usually only have one litter per year. How many puppies survive in a litter? Puppies born to older mothers tend to be more aggressive and less likely to live than puppies born to younger mothers. The number of litter a mother has had also affects survivability. Puppies from mothers with multiple litters have a better chance of surviving than those born from mothers with few litters. Some dogs may give birth to 8 puppies, and only four or five will survive. Some puppies can be born dead, while others may not survive the first 24 hours of life. Also, each puppy is a unique individual who has its genetic makeup, which may affect its ability to survive. Puppies are also more vulnerable than adults because they require a high level of care and attention from their parents during their first few months. How do you prepare a puppy for the first litter? Puppies are so cute and great for your household and the world. The earlier you start, the better. You can start by teaching your puppy how to use a litter box and give them some basic training to behave around other animals and people. You mostly need to make sure that your puppy is in good health. Do male dogs know their puppies? Male dogs are not typically interested in raising pups because of the lack of maternal instincts that most dogs have. According to the American Kennel Club, there are several reasons for this: 1 Most male dogs do not have maternal instincts and will, therefore, not attempt to nurse or care for their pups. In the case of male dogs, paternal instincts are not just a hypothetical concept. Male dogs have maternal instincts towards their puppies , not paternal ones. But why are so many males unable to show this instinct? Some believe it has something to do with testosterone levels in males and whether or not they have been neutered castrated. Other experts believe there may be an issue with communication between mother and child during gestation, but researchers worldwide are still investigating this. Can dogs have multiple fathers? Dogs are polygamous animals, meaning that the female will mate with any available male while in heat. This means that puppies from the same litter may have different fathers. The sperm of each male fertilizes an egg from the female and an egg from another female. If she has two or three different breeds within her family tree, then there is a good chance she has multiple fathers. For example, if you have three puppies born on the same day at the same time, two of them are female, and one is male, then they all come from different parents. Can a dog get a cat pregnant? Dogs and cats are different species. This means that dogs cannot get pregnant by mating with cats. If a dog and cat mated together, nothing would happen! There would be no puppies or kittens. Male dogs have no way of fertilizing female cats, so there will be no puppies or kittens, even if they mate. The only way this could be if their owner allowed them to have sex which would be illegal. Why do you separate dogs when giving birth? Dogs not separated from the rest of their pack are more likely to experience complications during labor, like infection or hemorrhaging. Separating a dog before and after giving birth can also minimize stress on both mother and pup. If you want to eliminate the risk of infection for your dog, you need to isolate her for at least three weeks before and after she gives birth. Some dogs enjoy going outside, while others prefer staying in their own space. If your dog enjoys going outside, use a small kennel or a dog house that is big enough for her to stretch out and lie down inside. These are great because they will help keep your dog cool and protected from bad weather and predators like coyotes who might be lurking nearby. How long are dogs stuck together when mating? Dogs are virtually locked together for minutes two to 30 minutes is also normal , during which time ejaculation takes place. The eggs are fertilized by the sperm and will then be released into her uterus. This process can take anywhere from three weeks to several months, depending on how much time the mother dog spends caring for her puppies after birth. The sperm is then transferred from one dog to the other, and the act of mating is complete. Conclusion Golden retrievers are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and affection. They are also known for their size, and the Golden Retriever is the largest of the retriever breeds. But how many puppies do golden retrievers usually have is determined by factors like age, health, and genetics and varies by the breed and sex of your Golden Retriever. According to the AKC, Golden Retrievers are expected to live between 10 and 14 years, with an average lifespan of around 11 years. However, some Golden Retrievers have lived up to 19 years old with average puppies of 8 in a single litter.
Bulldog Spotlight Gordon James I joined rescue because my family became overwhelmed with five kids and life, plain and simply. I decided I was ready to go because we were in an apartment and every day, it was getting smaller and smaller and smaller. My family loved me, but sometimes, love is not enough because I can hardly breathe. We are dedicated to saving and re-homing Bulldogs so they can have the healthy, happy lives they truly deserve. The group has been dedicated to the breed since , as a component of Lone Star Bulldog Club. Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue accepts Bulldogs from owners who can no longer keep them, as well as retrieves Bulldogs from shelters and other undesirable situations. Each Bulldog in the program is lovingly cared for in a foster home until the perfect forever family for that specific dog is found. Every Bulldog is different: personality, temperament, energy, comfort with kids and other animals, medical needs and more. We take all these factors into consideration when making a forever-home match. Adoption is a coordinated process between the coordinators, fosters and applicant. We work together with our knowledge of the dog to find the best home. When you apply, you might have a particular dog in mind. But please understand, that dog may already be in the process of being adopted by an approved family who has been waiting weeks to be matched with the right dog. But they would prefer to be the only thing with fur in their home. They still make a wonderful companion and deserve a loving home. For your convenience, they have been designated as Forever Single on our website. If you plan on only having one dog, we hope you will consider one of these. Since most of our volunteers live in the North Texas area, it is easier on us and the applying family if they live in this area. Because of this, our out-of-state adoptions are incredibly rare and only in neighboring states. If you are ready to submit your adoption application, please complete the Adopt A Bulldog Application. A volunteer will then review your application. This process can take some time, and not every home is a suitable home for a Bulldog, so please be patient. You are not buying a dog. Most are moderately friendly toward strangers. Although some can be aggressive with strange dogs, the breed is quite good with other pets. Upkeep The Bulldog appreciates a daily outing but cannot tolerate hot humid weather, which can be deadly. He should not be expected to jog or walk great distances, or to jump from any heights. Most Bulldogs cannot swim. Most Bulldogs wheeze and snore, and some drool. Coat care is minimal, but facial wrinkles and any folds around the tail should be cleaned daily. Special precautions must be taken when anesthetizing a Bulldog. Caesarean deliveries are commonly needed. Hip radiographs show most Bulldogs to be dysplastic but few show overt symptoms. History With the most distinctive mug in dogdom, the Bulldog has an equally distinctive history. Some Bulldogs were also set against bears for bear baiting, purely for entertainment. In , bull baiting was outlawed, and a new phase began for the Bulldog. By all rights, the breed should have become extinct, except that it had gained so many ardent admirers that they set out to rescue the Bulldog by selecting against ferocity while still maintaining—and often accentuating—its distinctive physical characteristics. Its tough steadfast persona led it to be identified as a national symbol of England. Its amiable clownish personality belies its appearance, and the Bulldog is a popular pet. Related Content.

Any of those can add a few hundred dollars to your total Labradoodle price. Breeder Stock Another factor that influences the Labradoodle cost is breeding stock. The best reputable breeders have waiting lists that filled 6 months in advance, sometimes even up to a year or two. This in turn means that breeders will charge higher rates to keep up with the demand while not overbreeding the mama dogs. Size, Color, and Coat Type Another thing you should keep in mind is that certain sizes, colors, and coat types can cost you some extra money. For instance, some breeders charge more for Mini Labradoodles compared to Standard Labradoodles. Usually, the most hypoallergenic Labradoodles are found in F1b, F1bb, F2b, and F2bb generations, which also require more genetic testing to achieve. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting a puppy from a professional, ethical breeder? Of course, there are many backyard breeders who have the best intentions in mind and only want to share the joy of this adorable crossbreed. However, oftentimes, these breeders might not conduct all the necessary health and genetic testing on their breeding dogs. Nor can they provide proper health guarantees for their puppies. Additionally, many backyard breeders do not choose new homes for the puppies as carefully as professional breeders. When a litter is born, they just sell all the puppies on a first come first serve basis. How much are Labradoodles when adopting from a backyard breeder? Puppy Mills Finally, we have the worst of the bunch — puppy mills. Unfortunately, these breeders only work for their own financial gain. More often than not, they neglect the wellbeing of their breeding dogs and puppies. Beware of pet stores, as well, as they often source their puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills usually overbreed their mama dogs and keep them on tight schedules to produce more and more puppies. Meanwhile, the dogs and puppies are kept in unsafe and unclean environments, often in small cages and kennels. Moreover, these pups often come with serious health conditions. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting from a puppy mill? Above all, we urge you to avoid these breeders at all costs. As a general rule of thumb, larger, Standard Labradoodles require more calories per day compared to smaller, Mini and Medium Labradoodles. All of them are tried, tested, and recommended by Doodle owners. Training Training and early socialization both play a key role in raising well-rounded Labradoodles. Vet Visits One of the most expensive parts of owning a dog is taking your pup to regular vet visits and wellness checks. And to be prepared for those unexpected vet visits, we recommend you choose a trustworthy pet insurance company. During the first year, you should make sure that your puppy is up to date with all of its vaccinations and preventative care for worms, fleas, ticks , and heartworm. Grooming You might already know that Labradoodles are high-maintenance when it comes to grooming and coat care. Time Investment Like any other pet, Labradoodles require a lot of time and effort from your part. Other Costs In addition to all the Labradoodle costs we mentioned above, there are other everyday items that your dog will need. These include food and water bowls, dog beds, dog crate, a collar and a leash, toys and chew toys, and poop bags. So, you know with absolute certainty that the Labradoodle is the right pup for you. But how can you find quality Labradoodle breeders? As fellow Doodle owners, we know how difficult it can be to find ethical, reputable breeders in your area. Why Are Labradoodles Expensive? Ethical Labradoodle breeders charge higher prices for their pups, as they carefully screen the breeding dogs through extensive health and genetic testing. In addition to that, they provide their clients with genetic health guarantees and implement various forms of enrichment methods when rearing the puppies. How Much Does A Labradoodle Cost: Final Thoughts Adopting a dog is not just a huge emotional commitment, but also requires you to think whether or not your finances allow you to take care of another living being. Hopefully, this article has managed to answer all of your questions about the Labradoodle cost of adoption and the ongoing costs throughout their lifetime. Avoid making the mistake of choosing the wrong Doodle temperament for your family, lifestyle, or current living situation. A close up face image of Labradoodle puppy Max The price depends on many factors and can vary from breeder to breeder. While this might seem like a hefty price to pay for a puppy, the low prices that you find on social media or other ads are usually from puppy mills that try to over-breed these beloved animals in inappropriate and unethical ways. Low-quality living conditions notwithstanding, puppies from such places have a high probability of suffering from ailments and issues caused by genetic mutations occurring from rapid breeding. Labradoodle costs around the world In Australia the average prices for non-shedding Labradoodles ranged from AUD. There were some niche breeders that charged much more. Depending on how unique the coat color is, the price will vary. Parti-colored Labradoodles like Tuxedo Labradoodle or Phantom Labradoodle cost significantly more than a solid-colored cream, black, or gold Labradoodle. Sometimes, depending on your location, you may have to shell out extra dollars if you specifically want a multi-colored Labradoodle. Coat texture is another influencing factor. Shiny, sleek coats are more attractive and an indication of a superior bloodline. Hence, they are going to cost more. Curly and wavy-haired Labradoodles will be more expensive than straight-haired ones as they are almost non-shedding and hypoallergenic. Blue-eyed Labradoodles can be even more expensive, owing to their rarity and beauty. Labradoodle Size As they are crossbred, there are no specific breeding standards for Labradoodles. Most breeders classify Labradoodle puppy sizes as standard, medium, and miniature. Toy, teacup, miniature, and maxi are some other terms used to describe the size of Labradoodle dogs. The smaller the puppy size, the higher its price. This is because of the increased demand for smaller-sized dogs. Some breeders have their own standards and classifications when it comes to dog size and weight. While some breeders consider pound dogs as petite, others see them as miniature. Micro and petit are other terms that are used, both interchangeably and independently by different breeders. Usually, petit dogs fall in the pounds range, and micro dogs under 10 pounds. Age Typically, most people prefer buying a young puppy rather than a full-grown dog. Hence, prices are higher for puppies than dogs. For instance, a 6-month-old puppy is going to cost less than a 6-week-old one. A rich Apricot coat Labradoodle at the groomer. Generation Type Another determining factor is the percentage of each parent breed in the Labradoodle puppy. F1B generations have a purebred Poodle and an F1 generation Labradoodle as their parents. While this is a rarer generation, they are cheaper as their chances of being hypoallergenic is lesser than that of others. Generally, F1B Labradoodles are the most expensive generation as they have the highest chance of being hypoallergenic. Location and Demand The Labradoodle breed is one of the most popular crossbreed dogs, a close second to the Goldendoodles. This has significantly increased their value and demand. Dog breeders of bigger cities will have a large client pool and higher earnings. They usually have a hard time keeping up with the demands and hence have to increase their price. Breeders from rural areas have comparatively lower demand and charge less for their puppies. Nevertheless, the demand for low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs is high everywhere, regardless of the size and popularity of a place. While it might be cheaper to buy your Labradoodle puppy from a rural breeder, you might still have to beat your budget to travel the extra distance or to have the puppy transferred to you. Although the low prices advertised at puppy mills might be tempting, getting a Labradoodle puppy from a reputed breeder is always a better option. Besides being spayed, neutered, and vaccinated, puppies from reputed breeders will also be appropriately socialized. This will make it easier for them to adapt to their new home. Most reputable breeders establish their prices based on their experience, investment, knowledge, credentials, and reputation with previous customers. Some breeders even incorporate training from a young age, and some puppies are potty trained at just eight weeks old. Reputed breeders also have health certificates and genetic records of both parent dogs in place. These certificates are proof that your Labradoodle is in the best of health and hygiene. Other Costs Associated With Labradoodles The preliminary cost of a Labradoodle will be substantially less than the total expenses involved throughout its life. Additionally, you might have to spend more on training foods and treats. Grooming The grooming needs of Labradoodles may vary depending on the type and length of their coat. Although Labradoodles are almost hypoallergenic, they need regular brushing and bathing. Medical Costs Most crossbreed dogs are usually less prone to ailments and diseases. Their larger gene pool also reduces their risk of inheriting diseases. One of the most common health issues with Labradoodle is hip dysplasia. And the surgical procedure to fix this is expensive, which is especially necessary for older Labradoodles. Besides this, there are other health care costs like vaccinations and regular veterinarian check-ups Ohio State Veterinary School source. It safeguards you against any unforeseen situations that may arise in the future with regard to its health. Training and Boarding Costs Although Labradoodles are very intelligent and highly trainable, it is advisable to enroll them in a professional training program to ensure their all-round development. It also helps address their excessive barking and jumping, which is common in Labradoodles. Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that can turn destructive when left alone for a long time. So whenever you go on trips, you will have to leave them at a doggie care center. Can Labradoodles smile? Ideally, you should purchase an adjustable crate whose length you can adjust as and when your puppy grows. Labradoodles are highly energetic dogs who need toys to maintain their mental stimulation and to keep them from getting destructive due to boredom. You might also have to make a one-time investment on a good quality bed as they often tend to chew and scratch at it. Labradoodle Adoption Price While you may want to get your Labradoodle puppy from a shelter, the chances are slim as Labradoodles are highly sought-after breeds that are usually kept in tight breeding groups. This is usually done to cover the cost of medical and maintenance care. Adopting a puppy from a rescue shelter is a noble idea, but you must also prepare to deal with any possible future problems with their health and temperament, as rescue dogs usually have health and behavior problems. My Miniature Labradoodle Max wearing a stylish rain coat Avoiding Disreputable Breeders The pet business has now emerged as one of the biggest industries worldwide. Unfortunately, this has also birthed unethical puppy mills, backyard breeders, and online pet stores, who have little to no knowledge about raising and nurturing puppies. Often, unsuspecting pet lovers trying to save some money fall prey to these tricks and end up with an unhealthy puppy with health and temperamental issues. This leads to them spending a lot of money on the treatment and maintenance of these puppies down the road. So, is there a way to distinguish between good and bad breeders and avoid paying exorbitant prices by accidentally supporting these puppy mills? Start by doing plenty of research on the breeder and consciously avoid backyard breeders, pet stores, and online stores. Additionally, look out for these red flags: Unusually low-priced puppies. The breeder refuses to show the living conditions of their dogs and puppies. Adult dogs are kept in harsh conditions and small cages. Puppies seem reserved, edgy, and nervous around people. The breeder has no health certificates of puppies and its parent dogs. Breeder refuses to provide any paperwork. Here are some standards and conventions practiced by trustworthy breeders: They breed puppies indoors and will take equal care of the parent dogs. They offer ample space and freedom to their puppies and dogs to run, play, sleep, and do everything they desire. They periodically clean and groom the dogs. They promote a healthy bonding of puppies with their mother and littermates. They try to gauge if you are capable of raising a particular dog breed. They offer tips and tricks on puppy care and maintenance. They have health and vaccination certificates from a licensed veterinarian. They offer proper legal protection like providing a guarantee for puppy replacement after around 1. Going through previous testimonials and customer reviews is another way of determining the credibility of a breeder. Find out how long the breeder has been in the business. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. If you are thinking that a Labradoodle might be a perfect addition to your family, you are right. They are friendly and intelligent dogs, and many have a low-shedding coat, which means they can be a good choice for families dealing with allergies or asthma. But exactly how much will it cost you to bring a Labradoodle home? The cost of a Labradoodle actually varies significantly depending on the specific dog and where you get it. We will go through all the things you are likely to have to pay for within the first six months of bringing the puppy home, and what you can expect to spend on the care and upkeep of your Labradoodle throughout their lives. The Cost Of Adopting A Labradoodle How much it will cost you to bring a Labradoodle into your household will vary significantly depending on where you get the puppy from. Whether you are looking for a standard Labradoodle or one of the small breeds that are the result of breeding a Labrador retriever with a miniature or toy poodle, also makes a difference, with the smaller dogs being more expensive. Why Are Labradoodles So Expensive? Labradoodles tend to be expensive because they are such desirable dogs. They are a mix of a Labrador retriever and a poodle, designed to be the perfect service dogs. Labrador retrievers have long been known as excellent working dogs because they are intelligent and motivated, which means they can be trained to complete the required tasks, and they also have a friendly and loving personality, so they know how to behave in public. This is essential when service dogs are able to enter public spaces that will be full of people, children, and other animals. However, the problem with Labradors is that they shed a lot. This means not only that they can be challenging to clean up after at home, but that they can be a health hazard in restaurants and places that need to maintain sanitary conditions, such as hospitals. Enter the poodle. Instead, the hair gets caught up in their coat and needs to be brushed out regularly. They are also highly intelligent, even more so than Labradors, which means they have a great ability to learn new tasks. They are also very loving, having been bred as companions, though they are a bit more wary of strangers than Labradors are. So the idea is that you combine a Labrador retriever and a poodle to get a Labradoodle, which has all the characteristics to work as a service dog and also has a low-shedding coat. But, since breeders are often catering to a specialist market, they do need to be careful to control for the characteristics they want. They need to be very careful to breed for the low-shedding coat since a Labradoodle naturally has an equal chance of inheriting a high-shedding Labrador coat and a friendly personality, as well as intelligence and an ability to learn. This is a lot of work for the breeder, so they charge more. The smaller pups cost even more because they are harder to breed due to the size difference between Labradors and small poodles. However, if you do come across a Labradoodle that does have the high-shedding coat of a Labrador, you might be able to get them a bit cheaper, as they will be harder to sell as service dogs. But be warned! It is almost impossible to tell whether a Labradoodle will have a low-shedding or high-shedding coat until they are at least 12 weeks old. With so much variation in the price of Labradoodles, it can be hard to know whether you are getting a good deal, or if you are being ripped off. Below are the main factors that affect the individual prices of Labradoodles and will push the price above or below the standard. These factors should help you determine whether a Labradoodle is being priced appropriately. Location Yes, just as housing costs more or less depending on where you live, the same is true of Labradoodles and all other dogs. Size As we have already said, size makes a big difference, and small Labradoodles that are the result of breeding between a Labrador retriever and either a miniature or toy poodle are significantly more expensive. This is because they are harder to breed, and they are also highly desirable pups. A mini Labradoodle can cost twice as much as a standard-sized version. Coat Type Labradoodles have three different coat types, which are classified as flat, wavy, or curly. Flat coats are most like the high-shedding coats of the Labrador, while curly coats are most like the low-shedding coats of poodles. Wavy coats fall somewhere in between. It will be no surprise to learn that curly coats are the most popular, and that dogs with these coats are more expensive. You might get a Labradoodle with a flat coat at a discount because they are shedders. This is easier to predict if you are breeding two Labradoodles that both already have the desired coat characteristics, but is very difficult to determine with first-generation Labradoodles. Coat Color Labradoodles come in a much wider range of colors than Labrador retrievers, and many of the more exotic coat colors are highly prized. Dogs like the Phantom Labradoodle and the Tuxedo Labradoodle are very coveted, and this can add significantly to the price of the dog. Breeder Reputation The fact of the matter is, when you are buying a dog from a breeder, you are putting a lot of faith into the assumption that everything they are telling you is true. They are the ones telling you that the parent pups have undergone extensive health screenings and that they have controlled for desirable characteristics. For this reason, reputation is very important among breeders, and you should always do a little bit of research on your breeder before purchasing. If you do find a good breeder with a reputation for producing happy and healthy pups, you can expect to pay more. They are at the top of the market, so they can afford to demand more money. Plus, good practice is usually more expensive to deliver. Additional Expenses When Buying A Labradoodle Puppy There are other expenses related to bringing a new puppy home beyond the price of the puppy itself. When you but a Labradoodle puppy from a reputable breeder, the price usually includes: Initial vaccination shots. While this is not actually required, it is highly suggested since it covers vet bills and emergency treatments for injuries. Most of these are optional except for emergency treatments. Owners who need service dogs should be prepared to spend more on special training classes. Dog Walking: Getting a Labradoodle means you get an active dog. For times when you cannot take your dog for a walk or play with them, you can hire a dog walker instead. Medical Emergencies: Expenses for medical emergencies are preferably avoided but are to be prepared for anyway. Accessories and Clothes: If you enjoy dressing up your Labradoodle, you would also want to buy different clothes and accessories for them. There are a lot of places that sell these, so you can either save or splurge. Again, these expenses can arise at specific points in time and can be optional. They also depend on you and how you want to spend on your Labradoodle. You can actually look for this popular breed from breeders or rescue shelters. The costs of breeding a healthy litter include: Health screening for the parents. Travel and accommodation to meet a suitable stud dog. Veterinary costs for mom and her litter. Extra food. Whelping supplies, such as a whelping box, heat mats, and bedding. Time off work to look after mom, and start socializing her puppies. So their puppies are more likely to leave home with inherited health problems that require expensive treatment later. Or with behavioral problems like separation anxiety or stranger-directed aggression, which are difficult or impossible to overcome. Lots of people are overwhelmed by the upfront cost of a well bred puppy. Adopting a dog from a shelter is one way to find a dog for less, but without supporting unethical breeding practices. And some regions even have dedicated rescue organizations which specialize in rehoming Labradoodles and other Poodle crosses. This is a much less expensive route and adoption fees often cover things like initial vaccinations and microchipping. Such as whether they carry any late-onset inherited diseases, or are reactive to certain triggers. What Factors Determine Labradoodle Cost? There are a number of factors which may make people willing to pay more for a Labradoodle. Breeder Good breeders are rarely in it for the money. Even if they sell their puppies for a more money than they spent on them, the profit divided by the number of hours they spent caring the dam and her litter works out in cents! All breeders have their own personal philosophy on pricing pups. They might have a reputation and a waiting list which means they can charge more than the competition. They might also charge highly to deter people from buying their puppies on impulse. Provided you ask politely, a reputable breeder will be happy to explain how they arrived at the cost of their puppies. But a breeder who refuses to discuss how they set their price at all may be attempting to cover up the fact that their puppies have been very poorly raised and are not worth the asking price. Breeding Stock Breeders who invest in meticulous health screening of their sire and dam may pass the cost of that onto their buyers, and they have every right to do so. Puppies from thoroughly health tested parents cost more upfront, but they are likely to cost less in lifetime veterinary fees. Labradoodle puppies from parents with show or field titles may also be advertised at higher prices. The puppies of Labradoodles that have been backcrossed with a purebred Poodle will have a greater chance of inheriting the Poodle coat. Other factors There are other things which might affect Labradoodle costs too. For example, in cities and urban areas, miniature Labradoodles might command higher prices than standard Labradoodles. Some factors have nothing to do with the dog at all. For example, many reputable breeders avoid producing litters around Christmas time to avoid buyers passing them on as gifts to other people, or buying them on impulse without really thinking it through. Low quality breeders on the other hand, tend to push their prices up at this time of year. The Cost of Owning a Labradoodle in the First Year Whether you go a shelter or a breeder, adoption fees and purchase price are only the beginning of what it costs to own a Labradoodle. The first year will typically be the most expensive because this is when most major expenses occur. Such as Having the dog spay or neutered. Training classes. Mastering these skills sets the professional pet stylist apart from the rest. Prep work should be done before every bathing and grooming appointment. All dogs need to have their ears checked and cleaned on a regular basis. Proper nail care is also very important. Long, unsightly nails are uncomfortable for the dog, as well as anyone they might jump on. Long nails also compromise the shape of the foot. Trimming the pads of the foot helps give the dog good traction on different surfaces and can minimize the amount of dirt the dog tracks into the house. It also affords the opportunity to treat and condition the paws from cracks and abrasions. Anal glands should also be checked and expressed if they are full. Some caring pet owners prefer to have the anal glands done by their veterinarian. Good dental hygiene is essential for a healthy pet as well. Nutritional Care In order to maintain healthy skin and coat as well as overall health, it is important to provide good nutrition to your dog through a well-balanced diet, vitamins, and healthy treats. Do they require a lot of grooming? If you are not a fan of cutting hair, then you have made the right selection of choosing a Bulldog. This smooth, short haired bundle of joy requires minimal grooming. However, weekly brushing is recommended. It is important to wash their face and pay particular attention to the wrinkles at least weekly if not twice a week. What is a common problem in bulldogs? The Bulldog is a member of the brachycephalic breed class, meaning that is has a short head and snout. This physical characteristic can lead to a number of possible health challenges, including those of the nose, eyes, teeth, and respiratory system. The nostrils are narrower, and the soft palate longer in the Bulldog, creating the potential for severe breathing problems, especially when the dog is overheated or over excited. Heat is a special concern with this breed, since it is not able to cool itself efficiently through panting, as other breeds do. Some of the major health problems the Bulldog is susceptible to are keratoconjunctivitis sicca KCS , ventricular septal defect, canine hip dysplasia CHD , shoulder luxation, internalized tail, stenotic nares, and elongated soft palate. The Bulldog has also been known to suffer from urethral prolapse or vaginal hyperplasia occasionally. Some minor problems affecting Bulldogs include entropion, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, distichiasis, ectropion, and demodicosis. Do Bulldogs shed or cause allergies? The difference is the conditioning of the dog and conformation training. It is always quite helpful if your breeder can help mentor you to lead you in the right direction upon entering the wonderful world of dog shows. A great place to start is with the national breed club like the Bulldog of America, www. May we suggest. How often should I bathe my French Bulldog puppy and what are their grooming needs? French Bulldogs sport a short and smooth coat that should be relatively fine to the touch. You do not want to over wash your Frenchie and dry out natural skin oils. We bathe our Frenchies on an as needed basis which is generally once a month , but we regularly spot clean them with wet washcloths or wet wipes unscented and for sensitive skin. Their behinds occasional need to be wiped clean as well, as does any other breed. The bottom line is that they should be washed as needed, and if your acceptance level of what is appropriate cleanliness is different than ours, it should not be a problem. There is quite a range of latitude in bathing frequency. There are many good dog shampoos on the market and it is really just a matter of personal preference. They can be purchased at any pet store, Walmart, etc. Years ago, when we owned a Yorkie, our vet recommended using baby shampoo because Yorkies tend to frequently get goop around the eyes; and, the baby shampoo allowed us to clean the area around their eyes without irritating them. We still use baby shampoo with our Frenchies since they have lots of folds on their faces that require regular cleaning. If you decide to go with a dog shampoo, choose a mild formulated shampoo for sensitive skin; your vet may have some good recommendations. French Bulldogs are short-haired and have a single coat; so, fortunately, they do not shed as much as most breeds. Brushing their coat regularly with a rubber brush will remove any dead or loose hair — which in turn, will reduce the amount of shedding. The are prone to becoming damp and this is where infection can result. They also can collect dirt and food causing infections also. Utah has a very dry climate, so for us it is sufficient to regularly clean their folds with baby shampoo and then thoroughly dry them with a dry cloth. The frequency of maintenance varies from Frenchie to Frenchie, as well as climatic conditions. Frenchies with large, ropey wrinkling in a hot, humid environment would require the most attention; whereas, a lightly wrinkled Frenchie in a cool, dry environment would require the least. It is recommended that you clean the wrinkles out at least once a week initially and then vary your schedule based on the requirements of each Frenchie. Tear stains appear more prevalent on the lighter color Frenchies. There are many products on the market which claim to remove and or prevent tear stain removal, but the most commonly referred to method is the use of Desitin yes, the same ointment used for the treatment of baby rash. The ointment is spread along the length of the stain and after two or three weeks of application the stains should have disappeared. Care must be taken in both cases to assure that neither gets into the dogs eyes. The nose can be susceptible to drying out. The best way to remedy this is to regularly apply a smear of petroleum jelly Vaseline to the nose. This keeps the nose dark and moist. Our vet also recommended vitamin E just squeeze a little of the capsule , which we have found to work very well. Some people do not feel comfortable clipping their dogs nails and will take them to a groomer or vet. However, if you want to save time and money, it is a fairly simple task that takes only a few minutes. There are two types of of clippers: a guillotine or a scissor type. The guillotine is the easiest to use. The instructions that come with the clippers will guide you on how to use the instrument. Light claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the blood vessels and nerves that supply the toenail, called the quick, is easier to see. Cut the toenail to within approximately 2 mm of the quick. If you cut into the quick, the toenail will bleed and the dog will experience pain — nothing serious, but they might not sit too still the next time you undertake this task. When cutting dark toenails, it is better to cut just a little off at a time. Some Frenchie owners, who have dogs with dark toenails, cut them once every week or two so that they only have to cut off a little at a time, avoiding any fear of cutting into the quick. If you do accidentally cut into the quick, no harm done. Bleeding generally stops within a few minutes it helps to apply pressure with a paper towel. Have More Questions?
