On Tuesday, the How I Met Your Mother actor, 47, revealed that his family of four — husband David Burtka and their year-old twins Harper and Gideon — welcomed a new puppy, Ella, into their home on Christmas morning. Harris shared a photo on Instagram of himself and his children, all wearing matching holiday pajamas, posing beside the adorable golden retriever puppy. Her name is Ella, and she has pretty much taken over our lives. Or gnawing on everything. Which is always. Methinks we need some training. But first, I must go cuddle. Thanks, Santa. You rule. Good Girls actress Christina Hendricks wrote, "Are you kidding me????? So sweet. What a cutie," said chef Andrew Zimmern. David Burtka, Neil Patrick Harris. Christmas Eve morning and my four-year-old daughter, Hailey, was in the hospital again, this time in a brand-new wing of Swedish Issaquah Medical Center. She was the only pediatric patient. The doctor was with Hailey, waiting to talk to my husband, Gary, and me, but I paused for a moment in the hallway, bracing myself. An artificial tree, festooned with lights and ornaments, stood in the corner. Carols played over the PA. The staff had tried to give the place a festive air, but it felt grim and sterile to me. Hailey had battled chronic lung disease and epilepsy since birth. Even when she was home, she was mostly bedridden. A surgically inserted feeding tube kept her alive. Her big brother, Logan, and sister, Harmony, were wonderful to her, but when they went off to school or to play with friends, Hailey was left on her own. What kind of lonely life is this for a child? I just wanted my little girl to enjoy the simple pleasures of childhood. Gary and I had scrimped for months and managed to save enough for our family to celebrate. Then Hailey caught some kind of respiratory virus. In the middle of the night on December 23, she had such trouble breathing that her lips turned blue. I called .The diagnosis was acute pneumonia. If she comes home, I thought. Hailey lay in bed, her face as pale as the sheets, the sparkle in her eyes dimmed. The doctor spoke in a low voice to Gary and me, telling us Hailey needed immediate surgery to move the feeding tube from her stomach to her small intestine because she was aspirating fluid into her lungs. Hailey had been incredibly brave through all of her treatments over the years. How could I encourage her to keep fighting? Suddenly it hit me. The perfect solution, the thing she wanted most. I brought it up with Gary that evening when we went to the cafeteria to grab a bite. When I throw the ball, he brings it back. Simply having him lie next to her comforted her. And it was just goldens she responded to. A golden retriever. Way beyond our budget. We were living paycheck to paycheck. And we lived in an apartment with no yard—not the kind of place for a big, active dog. Besides the initial cost, there would be food and vet bills. He wanted Hailey to be healthy and happy as much as I did. But he was practical. I already worked full-time taking care of a child with disabilities, an ideal job because I could watch Hailey at the same time. Hailey kept talking the whole time about her dog: what she would name it, how much she would love it. At one point, the anesthesiologist had to tell her to slow down and take a breath. The surgery went smoothly, and three days later Hailey came home. But the journey to get her dog was only just beginning. I picked up odd jobs. I walked dogs, cleaned houses, worked for an on-call nanny agency at night while Gary watched the kids. Every Sunday night, we would empty the jar and count the money so we could see our progress. It took eight months, but by the following August we finally had enough money saved. We found a golden retriever breeder and made plans to pick a puppy from his next litter. New worries sprang up in my mind: What if the dog was too rough for Hailey? We met the breeder in the parking lot of a grocery store on a Saturday morning. It was a chaotic scene, with other families clamoring to play with the 15 adorable puppies waiting for homes. But soon she was taking him on walks. The first time was just to our mailbox. Gary went with her, and they would add a block or so with every walk until Hailey could walk for 20 minutes without losing her breath. She took over the responsibility of feeding Hunter. By December, she was eating small portions. Most important, Hunter was her best friend, her constant companion. Hailey still spent much of the day resting in bed. Hunter lay right next to her. One day, Hailey overheard me sharing my biggest worry with Gary, that she would never be able to lead a normal life. If God can get Hunter for me, surely God can take care of me! We had Hunter trained to alert to her seizures, and her health and confidence grew. At age 9, she was eating so well, the doctors removed her feeding tube. Our lives have grown as well. Hailey now has three younger siblings. Our next dream is launching a center to train service dogs for other families. Like Hailey, I have faith that God will help us get there. By 6 months, they are just about there. It takes a little longer for them to reach their mature weight. They are considered fully grown at 18 months. Mostly named for the breeders who created them, there are said to be four distinct varieties of American Bulldog today, and yes, they are slightly different sizes. Both taller 23 to 27 inches and more muscular up to pounds , they most closely resemble their cousin pups, the English Bulldog. They have longer muzzles and are more leanly built than the Johnson dogs. The Painter American Bulldog was unfortunately created exclusively for fighting purposes. These dogs are around the same height as the other two but much lighter 55 to 75 pounds. Their breeding was poorly done initially, but responsible facilities are now working on healthier dogs with better temperaments. They are said to be the true American Bulldogs. Again, they are a little smaller than the first two types at 21 to 26 inches and 60 to 97 pounds. Aside from these, there are various hybrid American Bulldogs that are a combination of two or more of the above. It can be tricky to predict the exact measurements of these dogs are genetics are complicated. Photo by Lucas Ludwig on Unsplash There also tend to be gender differences with these dogs, as is the case with larger, more muscular breeds. Females weigh 60 to 80 pounds and stand between 20 and 23 inches high. Males weigh 75 to pounds and are around 22 to 25 inches in height. American Bulldog Growth Patterns By the time these dogs are six months old, they are already close to their adult height. They will often reach this somewhere between 9 and 12 months but will continue to put on weight significantly into their first year. Still, realistically male dogs on the larger end of the spectrum could continue to gain muscle mass right up to their second birthday and even beyond this. They will often achieve their mature height somewhat earlier than that at between 9 months to 12 months, depending on whether they are destined to be smaller or larger pups. However, they will continue to gain weight as their muscles develop for quite a while after this. This will especially be the case if they are getting plenty of exercise. What kind of diet do we give our pooches for a healthy weight? What you should never overfeed a dog? You should never ever overfeed your dogs too much carbs as they get stored as fat in the body if they are not used. Combining this with the right amount of dog food given to them, it will keep your dogs from becoming hungry out of meal hours. In turn, this will maintain their metabolism rate and utilize all the food they consume fully and appropriately. As a bonus, regular meal time will also discourage them from scavenging around the house like little vacuum cleaners as they grow accustomed to the amount of food they are given and to be used for the intervals between meal times. First, if you bought your puppy from a breeder, ask them about their estimated adult size. If you can visit the breeder and look at the parents, you will have a clear picture of what your puppy will look like when fully grown. Secondly, you can check the paws. If they seem oversized next to their body and legs, then they are still filling out and growing so that their whole body is proportional. This is because there is a lot of low-quality food that does not have enough nutrients. The food the American Bulldog will get from you determines his ability to grow. If you provide him with low-quality food, he will have stunted growth. Low-quality food does not have sufficient vitamins as well as minerals needed for development. The diet you provide to your dog affects his growth and general life quality. They love physical activities. Allow them to exercise enough so that they grow enough muscles and strong bones. Without good nutrition, the puppy cannot grow to be a strong and healthy adult. The growing American Bulldog has a big appetite and should be fed several meals per day: Puppies under four months need four meals a day adding to a total of 3 cups From 4 to 10 months give three meals a day and up to 5 cups. After 10 months give 2 meals a day around cups. Feeding the puppy large meals increases the risk of bloating, a fatal stomach condition seen in large dogs. Dogs who lead a very active lifestyle will burn more calories. The first way to determine if your American Bulldog is overweight or underweight is by weighing them. You may also observe their behavioral habits, feel their bodies, and see the vet. When you look at your American Bulldog, you should see the tuck behind the chest cavity. It should also have a visible waist when you view it from above. Your American Bulldog is overweight if you cannot feel the ribs and the spine. But if the ribs and the spine are visible, they are underweight. They may also have trouble breathing and get less active due to excess weight. When you are not familiar with this breed, you may be surprised to know that they are prone to certain health conditions. Understanding their health issues is crucial to get informed decisions about their health. The American Bulldogs have short snouts hence making them difficult to withstand hot weather, especially during physical activity. Ensure that there is enough water and monitor to ensure they are not having any breathing difficulty. The American Bulldogs undergo certain medical conditions: Hip Dysplasia is one of the most skeletal conditions in dogs. Panosteitis or Growing pan is a medical condition that causes lameness and pain in young dogs. The causes of this condition are found to be infectious agents and genetics as well as nutrition. The American Bulldog however can outgrow this disease as they get older. It also does not cause long-term effects. Every dog can get growing pains. The symptoms include shifting legs lameness, pain, lethargy, fever, depression, and loss of appetite. If the vet rules out any other underlying conditions, you may need to localize the pain to one of the long bones in the leg. Your vet may also recommend anti-inflammatory pain medication to give to your dog. You can tell if your American Bulldog is an ideal weight when you can see the ribs during breathing. An overweight American Bulldog is naturally weighing more than the indicated range. When in his calm state you should see his last two ribs. It also has a tuck where the stomach comes up higher than the ribcage. If the hip points show more of the vertebrae, then he is underweight. Reduce exercises. The American Bulldogs need puppy food when they are young and can be moved to grown-up food after one year to help in their weight control. When you stick to the feeding suggestion in the food, your dog will avoid avoiding obesity or other medical problems. It is good to avoid high-fat treats and provide a good choice of treats such as carrots. Treats made with proteins are also a good choice in helping them get in shape. When your American Bulldog is overweight change the diet to low calories ad high protein and has no carbs because they function as pointless fillers. Exercise your American Bulldog regularly but ensure you do not overdo it to prevent joint strains. You can determine your American Bulldog weight using two methods; The most accurate method to use is using a dog weighing scale. Using the scale is important in monitoring the growth of your American Bulldog regularly to detect any early abnormal growth. The scale will help you to weigh your dog without any hassle. The second method is using your bathroom scale. You weigh yourself when holding your American Bulldog and record the readings. Then weigh yourself using the same scale without your American Bulldog. Then you subtract your weight when not holding the dog from the weight with the dog, and the difference is the weight of your American Bulldog. The dog may begin to show lameness in the legs or difficulty when getting up from lying. Surgery is a good option in extreme cases. Nerve disease is a progressive neurologic disease that can be found in the American Bulldog. The signs usually appear in younger dogs where there is a rear leg weakness and imbalance. This disease has no effective treatment, but you can perform a genetic test. Dogs with this genetic condition should not be used for breeding. A thyroid problem is a condition where the body does not make enough thyroid hormone. The signs of this condition include hair loss, dry coat, and skin, weight gain, susceptibility to other skin diseases, aggression, and fearfulness. Blood screening can help detect disease. Feeding growing puppies with high-quality food is extremely important — if you do not provide adequate nutrition, your dog cannot grow up to become a strong and healthy adult. Growing American Bulldog puppies will have a big appetite! You should feed your pup several meals a day. On the one hand, this can lead to low blood sugar in your dog as the time interval between the feedings is too long. On the other hand, feeding very large meals and having your very hungry dog scarfe them down increases the risk for bloat, a potentially fatal stomach torsion seen in large dogs. My name is Mitzi Michelle Brooks. I have had dogs all my life and German Shepherds most of that time. I have tried different breeds, but always come back to what I know and love. The German Shepherd Dog is the right fit for me. I breed large, old-fashioned, straight-backed, German Shepherds with a special focus on health and temperament. I am a very small breeder, all my dogs live with me, in the house. They are first, and foremost, my beloved pets. In my litters, I concentrate on the things that matter most to me: Health and Temperament. My dogs are all larger than the breed standard but with no compromise to their health. All my dogs are medium to low energy, making them easy to train and ideally suited for families. I do not breed: dogs that are hyper, dogs that show any signs of aggression, working dogs, high drive dogs, or dogs with excessive angulation. Puppies are born and raised in my home! That means your puppy goes home with you already socialized with other dogs, with cats, and familiar with all the sights and sounds of a normal home. All puppies are also current on vaccinations and on a set deworming schedule. The puppies bred here are sold as companions and pets. Just as working dogs are bred to work, my puppies are bred to live in and be a part of a family. With their low to low-medium drive, my pups are very easy for their new parents to train and still possess that famous German Shepherd instinct to protect their home and their family. These soft temperaments mean that my dogs are happy to go out and play, but just as happy to come in, lay at your feet, and interact with their family. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. So if you live near Killeen Texas and are looking for a healthy and beautiful Mini Goldendoodle puppy then checkout our available pups now by Clicking Here. Below are some Mini Goldendoodle Pups that have been adopted! We have answers. Golden Retrievers should not be fed human food as it is typically not balanced enough to sustain healthy nutrition. It is best to consult your vet for dietary advice, as they can discuss the best possible approach for maintaining proper health for your specific dog's breed and age. A golden retriever puzzle comes in handy when you are dealing with a golden retriever that is very energetic and constantly needs a distraction in order not to be destructive. Dementia is fairly common in senior dogs, and while most golden retriever owners will notice a change in their canine behavior, they do not associate it with this condition. Continuous games with mentally stimulating toys will help you identify the early symptoms, like learning and memory problems. This can help you get your furry friend the help he needs much sooner. Keeps Your Dog Fit Another great reason for a puzzle toy is to keep your doggie pal fit. Food puzzle toys, in particular, involve the golden retriever running after the puzzle and opening it to retrieve the treat inside. This provides exercise for the pooch and enhances its problem-solving skills while helping it retain its hunting instinct. These toys can be used during a game of fetch with a reward at the end. Elimination of Destructive behavior The best dog puzzles also help your pooch eliminate destructive behavior as they stay focused on their toy, which revolves around interactive play. To get the best results for your dog, you should get involved in the play as well. Play releases happy hormones in dogs. They are able to better deal with your absence when they have these toys because they are mentally and physically occupied. For very energetic dogs, this is an excellent way to help release their pent-up energy so they and you can rest better. Please note that dogs that suffer from conditions like arthritis are not ideal candidates for puzzle toys. Always consult your vet in case you have such suffering from serious health conditions before investing in a puzzle toy. Animals that eat too fast and end up bloated need food puzzles to help them slow down their eating process. Retrieving the food from the puzzle slows them down thereby training them to eat at a much slower pace. A picky eater may just need the thrill of the hunt offered by the puzzle to pique their appetite. If your dog is an energetic type that is on the move constantly, a mentally stimulating toy is exactly what they need. Normally, energetic dogs thrive on problem solving and exercise. Examples of such dogs include service dogs, herders, guard dogs, among other outdoor oriented breeds. For dog owners who are training their dogs to sleep in their crate den or kennel, these puzzle toys can be the motivator for her to stay put in their space. Use the toys to keep the golden retriever occupied so they do not feel confined in the space. Smaller breeds, on the other hand, need appropriately-sized small to medium toys depending on how tenacious they are. So, consider what type of chewer your small dog is to ensure the toy remains safe. To learn more about this, check out the video below by TopDogTips showing how to choose the right size dog toys: Adjustability Start your golden retriever off with the basics then work your way to the advanced levels of the puzzles with training and rewards. Most interactive puzzles always have adjustability so that the toy not only captures the intelligence level of the dog but also leaves room for growth. Cleaning And Safety Your golden retriever needs a clean toy to keep it healthy. Choose an easy-to-clean option that can be washed to remove traces of the food treats. This is important as it means you have no moldy and stale food that can harm your pooch. Make sure the materials used on the toy are non-toxic and well-constructed. The last thing you want is a toy that breaks into pieces that cut or choke your dog. Your golden retriever will love burying its face in the burrow as it tries to get to the chipmunks hidden in the log, which is a pretty good challenge for them. You can keep stuffing the burrow with the chipmunks to keep the game going. The burrow comes with three holes for each of the critters. You can opt for your critters to be hedgehogs or birds. The toy has been designed to be ideal for medium to large dogs that are not aggressive chewers. Click Here For Price Your search for an excellent learning tool that can help keep your pup mentally-challenged ends with this toy. Nina Ottoson , the creator of this toy, recently received an award as a Pet Age Icon for developing treat puzzle toys that help keep dogs healthy through mental stimulation. Not only is it fun and colorful, it also has nooks and crannies where you can hide food treats and let your dog learn to retrieve them. Making the adjustability level less complicated makes it easier for your pup to find the treats under the blocks that are placed on the nooks. To make it safer, the blocks have been made large enough so as not to be a choking hazard. Any dog owner will find this toy easy and fun to use as it allows excellent interaction with your furry pal. It works well for fast and picky eaters although any dog will enjoy having this as part of their playtime repertoire. Click Here For Price Squirrels and dogs are an excellent combination as far as play is concerned. That is no different from how your canine will behave when you unpack this toy. The squirrels stuffed in the tree will quickly become a favorite pastime for your golden retriever as he retrieves them and you stuff them back again. In the process, he will hone his problem-solving skills and have lots of fun. This game of hide and seek features a plush tree trunk and six squirrels in the ginormous set. The squirrels are large enough to fit in the mouth without posing a hazard. There are other options as well, including junior, large, and jumbo each of which includes three squirrels. Whereas the ginormous trunk features five holes, the junior and jumbo have three and two holes, respectively. Also, the squirrels are squeaky, which appeals to the hunter instinct in the dog. Another thing you are sure to love about this puzzle toys is the variation of animals available. This could also be the perfect puzzle toy when you are crate-training your dog as you can spend time playing with her or leave her with the toy. Unfortunately, if your dog is a chewer, they can end up with bits of this in their mouth. It requires your dog to open various treat compartments, allowing it to learn to forage for treats and food. The flip board features knobs and slide disks which the golden retriever maneuvers to retrieve the treats you have placed underneath. A unique aspect of its design is the cones, which have been designed in a way that they cannot be knocked over by your golden retriever during play. The toy also takes pride in being an excellent mental stimulant that is easy to clean and maintain. This is crucial because of the element of food. Dogs of all sizes can enjoy playing with this dog treat toy puzzle owing to its accommodative dimensions. Fast and picky eaters will enjoy it the most. Click Here For Price Balls always do well with dogs because they allow the dog to engage their mind and body at the same time. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. It is, therefore, no surprise that some breeders are starting to mix the two. Considering whether a German Shepherd Lab Mix is right for you? Read on for everything you need to know about this amazing mixed-breed dog. Lab German Shepherd Mix Overview Size — 22 to 25 inches tall and 50 to 80 pounds Coat — Medium length, double coat, color varies Shedding — Yes Temperament — Intelligent, active, and loyal, but can be wary of strangers Trainable — Highly, but prone to destructive behavior when bored Activity — Highly active needs two hours of activity per day Best For — Families and people with active lifestyles and lots of time to spend with them What is a German Shepherd Lab Mix? As these dogs are roughly the same size, the mother can be of either breed as long as she is larger than the father, to ensure against any difficulty in the birthing process. Sheprador Appearance As is the case for most mix-breed dogs, it is a bit of a gamble what you will get when these two come together. They might have the pointed ears of a German Shepherd or the floppy ears of a Labrador. There is nothing to do but wait and see. But luckily, both German Shepherds and Labradors are attractive dogs, so however they turn out they should be handsome. That said, we can make a few generalizations about the appearance of Shepradors. Size As both German Shepherds and Labradors are medium- to large-sized dogs, you can expect their mixed offspring to be the same. German Shepherds are the larger of the two and are usually between 50 and 90 pounds and 22 to 26 inches tall. Labradors are only a little bit smaller, at 50 to 80 pounds and 22 to 25 inches tall. So expect your German Shepherd Lab Mix to stand between 22 and 25 inches tall and weigh 50 to 80 pounds. You can narrow this range down a bit by looking at the size of the parents. Color The color of these gorgeous mixed-breed dogs is also highly variable, and you might end up with a pooch of a solid coat color, like Labs, or striking mixed coloring, like German Shepherds. A lot of this depends on the color of the Labrador parent, whether they are yellow, black, or chocolate. As a general rule, the darker the lab parent, the darker the coat of the pup. But you also get white German Shepherd Dogs, which can result in striking white Shepradors. Coat When it comes to coat length, you should expect in most cases that your Lab German Shepherd Mix will have a shorter coat, like that of a Labrador. This seems to be a dominant gene, and the vast majority of German Shepherd Lab Mixes end up with this type of coat. The dog will certainly have a double coat, as this is a feature of both breeds. The undercoat will be soft and fluffy, and the guard coat rough. This does mean that they shed—a lot. This is not the type of dog to have at home if anyone in the household suffers from allergies. Shepherd Lab Mix Puppy Lab German Shepherd Mix Character While temperament is again unpredictable with mix-breeds, both German Shepherds and Labradors are intelligent, active, and loyal dogs, so you can expect their offspring to share these traits. German Shepherds are very intelligent and have a natural protective instinct. They have a tendency to guard whatever they consider to be theirs. Labradors were originally bred as gun dogs, to retrieve the wild game of hunters. As such, they are very obedient and tend to be pleasers, and they like nothing more than spending time with their humans. As both breeds are intelligent and highly trainable, you can expect these characteristics to appear in a Sheprador. However, whether they will be a guard dog that can be aggressive with strangers, or a pleaser that is great with children, you will have to wait and see. While dogs are a mix of nature and nurture, if you want to take a Lab German Shepherd mix into a family home, or if you are a first-time dog owner, you will want to be careful about which individual dog you choose. Activity Levels However their personality turns out, you are going to have a dog with a lot of energy. These larger dogs that are used to working need around two hours of exercise each day. Their intelligence also means they get bored easily, and when they do get bored, they can have a tendency toward destructive behavior, which means digging and chewing. They do best with active owners with whom they can go walking, hiking, and running. Whether these dogs will like swimming is a coin toss. While Labradors love the water, German Shepherds are a bit more wary. But their size and adventurous nature mean they can be trained to love the water. So you have a good chance that your Lab German Shepherd Mix will be a swimmer. These dogs are loyal and love being around their humans. You will find them at their happiest and healthiest when you make them part of the family and shower them with love. Exercise Ideally, your Sheprador will need around two hours of exercise per day. This might be more than just a long walk, as their high energy levels mean they will like to run as well. They will enjoy tackling tough trails with you at their side, and the retriever nature of Labradors also means this breed is likely to enjoy a good game of fetch. Bear in mind that these dogs will need this level of exercise rain or shine, or they will become frustrated and start engaging in destructive behavior. This is not only bad for them in general, but can put excess pressure on their hips, which are also prone to issues. Intellectual Stimulation German Shepherd Lab Mix dogs are invariably highly intelligent, which makes them easy to train but also means they get bored very easily. When they do get bored, they are smart enough to find trouble, and you may come home to quite the scene. These dogs need to spend time with people to occupy their minds, and they also benefit from intellectually stimulating games. But expect them to make short work of these challenges, as they are chewers. You will be getting them new games quite often. Companionship Labradors need a lot of companionship, and this is a trait their offspring with German Shepherds are likely to share. Not only will they get bored and start acting up, but they can become depressed. Grooming Both German Shepherds and Labradors are shedders, so you can be sure their Sheprador offspring will be as well. This is just a fact of life with Shepradors. They will need to be brushed at least twice a week, and as often as once a day during the shedding seasons fall and spring. As well as brushing, invest in a good quality vacuum cleaner that has special functionality to help you pick up dog hair. These dogs are also likely to enjoy jumping up on the couch for a snuggle and a snooze. Invest in coverings and be sure your swanky vacuum cleaner has an attachment for upholstery. Their coat is not the only part of their grooming to attend to. You need to clean their teeth three times a week, with a brush or with dental treats. Finally, trim their nails every three months. This is both for their health and the health of your home, as their nails can damage your floors. For a big dog like this, it can be a good idea to take them to the vet to get their nails clipped. But if you feel confident to do this at home, check out our list of the best nail clippers. Diet German Shepherd Lab Mixes are big dogs that have lots of energy, but they also have a tendency toward obesity, which means they have to get their energy from good sources. This means high-quality protein and fats over carbohydrates. Preferably this means meals made from quality meats rather than meals or byproducts. When looking at the ingredient list, look for named meats at the first ingredient. Lab German Shepherd Mixes also benefit from novel proteins in their diet, as they can be prone to allergies. Dogs tend to develop allergies to the meats they eat the most, which often means beef and chicken. When they are puppies, Shepradors should be fed three times a day, and this should be cut down to two times a day from about four months of age. As a rule, dogs need 25 to 30 calories per pound of their weight per day, though you should watch their individual weight and energy level to see if you need to adjust their meals up or down. You can also check the label on your dog food to get a rough estimate of how much you should be feeding your Sheprador. Of course the amount will also vary depending on how often you exercise your dog. Known Health Problems While there is no limit to the number of health problems that a dog of any breed can develop, or they might not develop any at all, some dog breeds are more prone to some conditions than others. German Shepherd Lab Mix dogs have the potential to develop the health problems that are common in goth German Shepherds and Labradors. These include: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia — This is a condition where the hip and elbow joints do not develop normally and that can cause extreme pain and arthritis in later life. For more information check out our list of Glucosamine for Dogs. Progressive Retinal Atrophy — This is a group of degenerative diseases that affect the eyes and can lead to blindness. Shepradors are also prone to eat whatever is put in front of them, so you need to be conscious of what you are feeding them. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus — Poor diet can lead the stomach to dilate and expand, in turn leading to a twisting of the stomach that is life-threatening. It can block the flow of blood to the abdomen, leading to rupture of the stomach walls, and put pressure on the diaphragm thereby inhibiting the lungs. Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy — This is a condition that affects the spinal cord and leads to progressive weakness of the hind limbs, and eventually paralysis. Panosteitis — This is an inflammation of the outer surface of the long bones in the legs, resulting in a shifting lameness and making bones more susceptible to breaks. Allergies — Dogs can be born with allergies or develop them over time. Dogs often develop allergies if they eat the same foods consistently. Underactive Thyroid — The thyroid manages hormones, and an underactive thyroid is unable to secrete the required hormones. This can result in weight gain, lethargy, and cold intolerance. At this time, their energy levels will drop and they will need some changes in their diet and exercise. GSD Lab Mix Puppy But no matter how well trained they are, if they are left to get bored for too long, they can engage in some pretty destructive behavior, such as digging and chewing everything in sight. You have been forewarned. The highly assertive nature of German Shepherds means they do not respond well to domination training. They are likely to revolt when subjected to punishment. The best way to train a Labrador German Shepherd Mix is through positive reinforcement. Labradors are pleasers that love to make their humans happy. This means their offspring are also likely to feel the same way. So they will respond rapidly to training based on rewards for positive behavior. Deal with this behavior early, with specific training for dealing with children and strangers. They are very active and need lots of attention, so they need to be in households that support this. But they do great with adults and kids, so they can be a great family pet. Remember that German Shepherd Labrador Mixes need around two hours of exercise every day, so they need someone who can commit to that level of activity. But at the same time, it means they are the type of dog you can take on all of your adventures if you like hiking and trailing. They also need attention and stimulation throughout the day. If anyone in the house suffers with pet hair allergies, this is another reason Labrador German Shepherd Mixes are not the right dog for you, as they shed a lot. Consider something like a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle instead. Also, ask for medical records of the parents, to see what health conditions the pup might be prone to in the future. If you decide to adopt a mature dog, spend a bit of time with them to see what their temperament is like. History of the Breeds German Shepherd German Shepherds originated in Germany in the late 19th century as a sheep herding dog. But, because they are very intelligent, trainable, obedient, and strong, they have since moved into many different working roles including police, military, search and rescue, and disability assistance. German Shepherds can have a reputation for being aggressive, but they are more alert and wary than aggressive. They can have a tendency to become overprotective of family and territory. But if socialized and trained properly, this tendency should be highly manageable. German Shepherds are the second-most popular dog in the United States and the seventh-most popular dog in the United Kingdom. Labrador Labradors, also known as Labrador Retrievers, were initially used in Newfoundland as fishing dogs to retrieve fish that had gotten away. Because they are incredibly friendly but also intelligent and therefore easy to train, today Labradors are favored as disability assistance dogs, often helping individuals with blindness, ptsd, mobility issues and autism. Labradors are the most popular dog breed in the United States. They are intelligent and therefore easy to train, and loving and loyal, so they will quickly feel like part of the family. However, they do need a lot of exercise and attention, so adopting a Sheprador into your family is a commitment. German Shepherds have a reputation for being aggressive, but it is not really deserved. They are natural watchdogs and reserved around strangers, but they are not aggressive dogs that are likely to attack. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which means easy to control. Beagles, Poodles, Boxers, Golden Retrievers and Spaniels are all extremely friendly dogs as well, many specifically bred to be companions. They do best with active people or families who are full of people to love them. Like all dogs, they will do their best when they are cared for properly. This means training them appropriately, exercising them, keeping them mentally stimulated, and feeding them well. But these loyal pooches will repay your care and commitment with a lot of love and affection. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. For a list of all the supplies we get for our new service dog puppies check out our New Puppy Checklist on the PuppyInTraining. There is no way to find out if your puppy will develop any of these conditions. All you can do is to take care of your dog properly to prevent some of these severe medical conditions. Your growing dog should maintain a healthy weight because extra weight can be an additional weight on its spine. The ideal dog nutrition will also depend on any nutritional needs of your dog. If you are training your dog, never give treats as a reward. This encourages obesity and will only cause more problems for your dog. Lab German Shepherd Mix Training The Lab crossed with a German Shepherd is a brilliant dog, but it may need more than simple traditional training techniques to train this dog. The following tricks will help you make your dog obey you in no time. The Clicker Technique Learn how to train your dog using a clicker. Press this, and you will hear an audible click, a sound that dog loves very much. The clicker may be used in all kinds of tricks, but the most common is for positive reinforcement. Just click the clicker when your dog can follow the trick and then click again if you want to repeat the behavior. Invest in a good clicker which is available in most pet stores online. This can contribute to obesity and other health problems related to being overweight. Reward good behavior by patting your dog, playing with him or giving him a good scratch. Tell your dog what a good dog he is and combines this with a lot of pats as reinforcement. Every dog takes his time so you must be patient. His bed should at the same place where he found it the first time while his food bowls should also be in the same area. Consistency is the key to training dogs important stuff. Also, consider talking to everyone at home regarding your rules and commands to reinforce consistency in training your dog. Train Your Dog In A Familiar Environment Dogs like the Lab are easily distracted; therefore you must train your pup in a quiet and familiar environment first before you take him out for further training. Start inside a quiet room with only you and him. You can train him outdoors once he is less distracted to noise and the presence of other pets and people. You may also opt for professional training for your Lab German Shepherd mix dog if you want your pup to grow up and become a service dog or police dog. German Shepherd Lab Mix and Families Lab German Shepherds can be great family dogs because these dogs love to be with their masters and to please them every way they can. These are patient with children and will never roughhouse or bite. They can even tolerate toddlers and very intense games like dress up and role play games. Lab German Shepherd mix dogs will love to be with other pets and even other dogs. They are not domineering and will never cause a fight. The Lab German Shepherd mix may become anti-social and may become aggressive with people or other dogs when they are not introduced to people and other pets early on. Your dog should be trained first and exposed to other dogs and people to prevent this untoward behavior. Any puppies that qualify as a German Shepherd Mix are a cross between a German Shepherd and another dog breed. In a mixed breed, you can get any mix of characteristics in the parent breeds. German Shepherds tend to be strong-willed, intelligent, playful, and loyal. To get a full idea of what to expect in your puppy, be sure to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the cross and check out the mother dog in-person to get a general idea about size and temperament. On the German Shepherd side, you have an independent dog with high intelligence and a playful spirit. German Shepherds make great family pets and are born protectors. Because of their protective instinct, they can be suspicious of strangers. Socialization early and often can help curb this suspicion and make them more open to new people and situations. German Shepherds also tend to be loving and have a lively personality. The German Shepherd Mix can have any or all of these characteristics plus any characteristics from the other parent breed in the mix. Before buying a German Shepherd Mix puppy and bringing them home, be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. If the puppies are being family-raised around children, you should be able to get an idea of how they will do in a family setting that includes children. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. With a German Shepherd Mix, you could get a moderately adaptable dog that is just like a purebred German Shepherd. You could also end up with a dog that is more like the other parent breed. Talking with the breeder about the other parent breed can give you a good idea of what to expect. German Shepherds can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. You will need to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an idea of any other health concerns to be aware of in your German Shepherd Mix. Health screenings, clearances, and the genetic history of the parents can help allay concerns about potential health conditions. On the German Shepherd side, training and obedience classes are highly recommended for novice dog owners. Although GSDs are highly intelligent, pick up on things quickly, and train fairly easily, they can be stubborn with an independent streak. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. You will still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an understanding of what to expect during the training process. Professional grooming a few times a year and the occasional bath is also recommended. Regardless of the coat type, your German Shepherd Mix will need to have their nails trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly. Not every dog will allow you to do this, so try to get a tooth brushing session in at least a few times a week to reduce tartar buildup. This will help prevent dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, it will help cut down on bad breath! German Shepherds tend to have a high activity level. They were bred to run, herd, guard, and protect, so they are used to working and having a job to do. They are definitely not a lazy dog breed! Be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. You will still want to go in prepared for a high energy dog with the understanding that your German Shepherd Mix puppy may have an activity level closer to the other breed in the cross. If both are high energy dogs breeds, expect to end up with a high energy dog. A German Shepherd is a large dog breed that generally weighs between 55 and 90 pounds. They also usually stand between 22 and 26 inches tall at the shoulders. The other dog breed in the cross could result in a smaller or larger German Shepherd Mix. A German Shepherd generally lives for years. You should be able to expect a similar range in your German Shepherd Mix, but the other dog breed in the cross could affect this range. He was found as a stray in South Carolina before making the journey to Connecticut to find his furever family. Sadly, Willie has now been waiting over a year and has no interest since being with us. Willie is very much a snuggler, once he gets to know you! He's the type of pup that you will need to build trust with. He adores his kisses and will cuddle up on the couch and watch a movie with you for hours on a rainy day. Willie loves his toys, walks around the neighborhood, hikes in the woods, and running around the backyard. Willie is very smart and knows some commands such as sit, crate, down, and even paw. After being in the shelter system most of his life, he is the most deserving boy of a furever home. Willie responds very well to correction, is crate trained, and housetrained. He loves comfy beds and tons of blankets to snuggle into! He is so silly and quirky and has an infectious personality. While he was previously fine with other animals, Willie has become reactive over time so he'd best as an only pet with adults only. He also MUST go to a home with a fenced yard. Adopters with dog experience are highly preferred and further training is encouraged. If you are interested in this gorgeous guy, please complete the application at form. golden retriever puppies warsaw ny - Life Span Did You Know? Breeders developed Toy Poodles in 18th century England as smaller versions of their German predecessors. The Toy Poodle began to represent social status, and nobles would decorate their dogs in high fashion of the time. They became so popular, in fact, that they were one of the first toy breeds recognized by the Kennel Club. Toy Poodles are smart cookies. Their intelligence is one of their predominant features, and is often showcased during obedience training. These dogs have tremendous problem-solving capabilities that make them ideal for competitions. On the other hand, this same intelligence makes for an easily bored pup. They need mental stimulation, like challenging games and toys , to keep their busy minds occupied. The Toy Poodle may also be suspicious of strangers and slow to warm up to new people. This dog breed can adapt to a wide range of living situations due to their small size. As a matter of fact, they have trouble dealing with any kind of alone time. As such, the Toy Poodle is an excellent companion animal for people who love a little company. There are a few health conditions that Toy Poodles are more susceptible to than other dog breeds. For example, they may suffer from eye disorders, like cataracts, or blood clotting disorders, like Hemophilia. Because of their size, they may also bear the risk of dental crowding, kneecap migration, or trachea instability. With regular visits to the veterinarian, many of these potential health concerns can be comfortably managed. Owners typically have an easy time during obedience training with Toy Poodles. Their intelligence often hastens the training process. However, they can present destructive tendencies when left to their own devices for too long. Toy Poodles have famously low-shedding coats. They lack undercoats, so their shedding is minimal. Their fur is hypoallergenic and mats rather than sheds. These pups will only need to be groomed to prevent matting and increase shine. Usually, brushing your Toy Poodle once or twice a week and grooming every six weeks is sufficient. As a small dog breed, they are more prone to developing dental disease so good dental care is important. Poodles are an active breed in general, and Toy Poodles in specific are just as active. After a few laps around the kitchen, the Toy Poodle will tire out and happily sit by their owners during daily activities. The Toy Poodle stands at a mighty inches at the shoulder. Poodle Mix Puppies for Sale. Our journey to Old Amish country was for business, not pleasure. When you think of Amish country industry, one conjures oak furniture, quilts and perhaps farm stands. Few may realize that the Amish also flourish when it comes to breeding puppies. Like many people seeking special companions in the Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States, we drove hours, invested hundreds of dollars and loads of emotional energy into this pilgrimage to a unique religious and cultural landscape. She was an Amish-born canine Doodle princess. Her given name: Alisha. Dreams of a Dog Deferred For years, my year-old asked to get a dog. We spent hundreds of hours discussing the idea, researching breeds and considering when and how to obtain a canine companion. We tried visiting local animal shelters and discovered a majority to be fearsome pit bulls, a breed our entire family dislikes. I tried using the popular site Petfinder to locate rescue dogs and found few available after several wild goose chases. That app would often shuttle me to animal shelters in other states, and dogs we pursued were already adopted. The Petfinder site also seemed slow to update and clunky to use. Doodles are often intelligent, good natured and hypoallergenic. German Shepherds and Pit Bulls be damned. Golden Retrievers and Labradors? Watch out. Doodle popularity is coming to dethrone your breed next. Meanwhile, we heard positive things from people who found pets from the Amish in Pennsylvania. One weekend in January, I restarted the search for a puppy and came across the Lancaster Puppies website, downloading the iOS app. When I changed the filter to Pennsylvania, more than cockapoos surfaced. I Love HER! Let us rejoice and be glad in it. And she was located in Quarryville, Pa. The description on the profile of Alisha explained her heritage — daughter of a cockapoo mother named Roxy and a toy poodle stud a seeming misnomer — and other details. Their voice mail said they would return calls on Monday. My daughter prayed that night that we could adopt Alisha and peppered me with questions nonstop. With a cheery voice, she said we were first in line to adopt Alisha and we were lucky to have called the day they listed the puppies — before many other people called about Alisha and her two siblings. Molly enjoyed her new luxurious furniture. We made plans to mail a check. It was too late. Another woman was in line to adopt Ashley. My daughters felt the woman was rude to Esther and expressed their disgust multiple times, also hoping she would drop out of contention for the second puppy — to no avail. Later, Esther gave me details for a new friend who could receive a Zelle payment. I asked this woman, Lauren, about the puppy industry in Amish country. My conversation with Lauren also confirmed that Esther and her family were legitimate. All we do is show the puppies and give them our information and then you can call. It was clear that some animal rights activists despise the Amish dog breeding industry. Sadly, dogs are considered livestock, a cash crop and just another source of lucrative income for the Amish. It said the communities often sell their dogs directly to the public through Lancaster Puppies, Greenfield Puppies or a mix of online classified sites such as Puppy Find. One video suggested some Amish breeders perform cesarean sections and other procedures on dogs rather than hiring a veterinarian to do so. Some sites made undercover videos that aim to expose inhumane treatment, showing dogs in cages without proper medical treatment. Snopes concluded that the statistic cannot be proven and that many commercial breeding kennels in Lancaster had closed. Other sites say some Amish puppy mills house dozens or hundreds of dogs in pole barns or outbuildings, where dogs live in overcrowded, stacked cages. They allege that the dogs are force-bred at every heat cycle. They say veterinarian care is minimal because it costs money. I filtered all puppies on the app from Quarryville and did a series of random checks to see how many puppies Esther and Isaac listed. I saw only two small batches of puppies, which made me feel good. I noticed some other sellers have many more batches for sale. I appreciated how personable and honest Esther was on the phone. We talked about the puppy mills problem at one point, and she welcomed me to ask questions and write about this topic. She also welcomed our family to pick up the puppy and meet their family. To me, these were all good signs. I also saw signs that parts of the Amish community were working toward better practices for puppy breeders. A story from The New York Times showed the Amish community was facing backlash and boycotts over its ambitious dog breeding goals and questionable methods three decades ago. As bad press exposed the practices, regulations took effect in some locations, and some norms also changed as more Amish families saw dogs as pets rather than just livestock. One story in Gannett newspapers in Indiana and Kentucky in reported how the Amish were aiming to restore their dog breeding reputation. Purdue researchers advised the breeders to let dogs run in the yard to exercise and socialize more and found the dogs looked and behaved better. The project aimed to develop certifications that would go beyond U. Department of Agriculture mandates on food, water, housing and climate. The Amish have always used horses to pull their buggies and help with farm work, meaning horse breeding has always been part of Amish culture. And the site said some Amish people are active in the exotic animal trade, breeding parrots, zebras, foxes and hedgehogs. Perhaps Netflix will consider a series on Amish exotic breeders once it exhausts its appetite for portraying tiger breeders such as Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin? Many people recognize Old Order Amish for their horse-drawn wagons and their 17th century appearance that includes mostly dark-colored clothing, beards for men, head coverings for women in public and a prohibition on zippers. Those are fine. He wondered aloud if Alisha would be troubled riding in an automobile powered by an internal combustion engine rather than horses. The Amish in America grew out of conservative Anabaptist communities that started in Switzerland in the s. They follow the teachings of Jakob Ammann, who spearheaded a split with the Mennonites over the issue of excommunication. The Mennonites take a softer approach to excommunication. As we arrived in Lancaster County, I felt refreshed. The clean air, rolling pastures and orderly, well-made buildings reminded me of bucolic countryside in Europe, such as in rural Germany or Switzerland, where the Amish originated. I also sensed a pleasant absence of marketing, technology and materialism. As we passed the schoolhouse, my year-old daughter chimed in. The Old Order Amish are known for being separate from the dominant society and cautious of technological innovations, according to Edsel Burdge, Jr. And they area growing in number. Another 6, live in Canada and about live elsewhere. The birth rate for Old Order Amish is more than triple the U. Many Amish families have 5, 10 or more children. They scampered in the yard, playing and bonding with the tiny puppy while I chatted with Esther and Isaac. Their own house dog, an older Yorkshire Terrier, pranced around the yard. They told me they first started owning and breeding Siberian Huskies, a favorite dog for Isaac, in the early s. That was pretty decent pay. The big boom for their business occurred as apps began making markets between breeders and buyers. Most people now are from out of state. I mentioned I saw they had recently had clients from Brooklyn, Ohio and many other places. From their perspective, Petfinder and other apps that connect stray dogs and rescued dogs to owners is a wonderful service. They also know America has more demand for pets beyond the stray and rescue market. And the demand is very helpful for Amish families, trying to sustain their family, their farm and their faithful way of life. Isaac and Esther said they are glad to see the awareness of puppy animal welfare growing in the area. A non-profit group called PAWS includes a large group of Amish men who work with animal welfare advocates to educate people about the law as well as how to have decent care for dogs. Isaac and Esther gave us a tour of their farm, including the workshop where Isaac and his children fashion beautiful, hardwood furniture with clean lines and, sometimes, a distressed farmhouse look. They showed us the barn where they keep their horse and buggy. Dogs at the Amish farm had access to the outdoors, heated and cooled kennels and lots of exercise and fresh air. And they showed us their dog kennel with half a dozen Siberian Huskies on one side and half a dozen small dogs like Cocker Spaniels and Shih Tzus on the other side. Each dog had its own fenced in area and the ability to run through a pet door to an outside area. The dogs seemed happy, healthy and energetic. They barked and ran excitedly when seeing my children. I was glad to see the dogs also ran on safe, flat floors rather than on raised chicken wire platforms like animal rights videos showed of puppy mills. Esther pointed out an air conditioning machine that keeps the kennel cool in the summertime. Our conversation was interrupted momentarily by my 5-year-old daughter running up and making an important announcement. They suggested people do basic things like get in contact with sellers, make sure people are doing more with puppies than just giving basic food and water. They say to make sure that worming and vaccinations are up to date and certified by a veterinarian. You would think we know how to do it. But we keep learning. As we walked around the farm, I enjoyed chatting with Isaac about growing up as the son of a Baptist pastor in South Dakota and the fact we are in different wings in the broader Christendom. Another enjoyable moment in our conversation was when I explained that I hoped the dog would help my kids stay off technology devices. And, in that moment, I realized the Amish were prescient and inoculated from the plague of big technology companies that has wrought an explosion of addictive algorithms and legions of substandard of content. I asked if that was true and if it is now changing. Now, they see more people caring about the puppies and realizing they are pets. They say the PAWS group has helped with that perspective shift. A horse and buggy the Stoltzfus family uses for transportation. A coffee shop at a grocery store in Quarryville, Pa. Driving home with Molly to New Jersey. Several horses and buggies parked in the lot and I saw one older Amish man riding an electric wheelchair, causing me to wonder how he got special dispensation. Inside the grocery store, a vaulted pantheon-style wall featured a large mural depicting lush Amish farms and a train passing through the bucolic scenes. The world and they that dwell therein. A cheerful mural with a religious message inside a grocery store in Quarryville, Pa. Young Amish women work the kitchen and the cash register. We voted at dinner one night on a new name with the winning nomination coming from my daughters and secured by persuasive speeches. Esther called me a day later to see how the puppy was doing and to ask if I could send them a copy of the article when it is published. I said, yes, I can mail a copy. She suggested I could perhaps fax them a copy. Such a practice would limit the integrity and independence of the author. So I respected their wishes as well. I felt my life was enriched from my trip to Lancaster County and my time with them. I hope my family can visit again before long to see more of the landscape, culture and food. Emmy and her new puppy, Molly. She seems puzzled by cell phone cameras and tilts her head in a cute way when she hears music or videos. Her experience with the Stoltzfus family and her fellow dogs in the kennel prepared her to sleep well at night and to understand boundaries better than most puppies. She wakes up ready to play with kids in my house the same way she woke up ready to play with kids at the Stoltzfus house in Quarryville. Positive messages inside the coffee shop and grocery store. Seen the puppy on lancasterpuppies. We did have an appointment but when we arrived the lady wasn't there and some teenage children helped us. We were very disappointed. We drove a long ways 9 hrs. We did not get to meet the parents like they said we could. We did not get to see the rest of the siblings. They had just bathed the puppy and gave it to us wet. Even though the puppy was just bathed, he still stunk. It was basically just written on a piece of paper by them. We got a receipt and later on a room at the Holiday Inn with the puppy who pooped out worms immediately. We drove home the next day and about 2 days later our puppy was very ill with a very heavy case of Giardia Coccidia and hook worms. There are lots of breeders on this site but definitely avoid the Amish. They're never available on sundays never so hint hint. Never again. Some of these dogs emigrated with their masters from England to America. Eventually the English Bulldog was bred down in size and his personality was softened, but the American version remained a larger, fiercer dog. The American version has longer legs and more speed and agility than the English show dog. After World War II, two men made an effort to preserve and re-establish the breed as working bulldogs in the Sand Valley area of Alabama where farmers used these dogs to help handle unruly livestock. By , the dogs were a distinct breed, and in , the United Kennel recognized the breed as the American Bulldog. The American Bulldog has also been used as a guard and in hunting bear, wild boar, squirrel, and raccoon. They have even been trained to drive cattle and guard stock from predators. Farmers prize the dogs for their stamina, protectiveness, intelligence, and working abilities. Description The American Bulldog is a muscular, sturdy dog with a large, powerful head and jaws. The teeth should meet in a tight undershot, even or scissors bite. A variety of ear types are accepted, including rose, half pricked, and pendant. A good dog breeder is registered in a breeders association and breeds according to the rules and guidelines of the respective breed association. In addition to participating in beauty and performance shows at dog shows, this also includes health checks on their breeding dogs. These papers show which ancestors were involved in the development of the puppy and whether inbreeding was carried out. What makes a serious dog breed? A reputable breeder is dedicated to their breed and usually only breeds this one breed. The prices that dog breeders charge for their puppies mostly flow back into dog breeding. A profit is hardly achieved with good and species-appropriate husbandry. How do I recognize a reputable breeder? First, make sure that the dog breed leaves a clean and well-groomed impression. The following points can also help you buy puppies from a reputable dog breeder: Do all animals look lively and healthy? Do the puppies grow up in the family instead of having to live in a kennel outside? Are the parent animals on-site? Are you allowed to visit the puppies several times? Is the breeder interested in your living conditions? Would they like to know as precisely as possible where their puppies will live? Does the dog breeder take special measures to give their puppies a good start in life? For example, do the puppies get to know car journeys and train journeys? Are they used to other pets and children? Does the breeder grant themself a right of repurchase in the event that the buyer wants to give their dog back? These points are indicators of a reputable breeder. In addition, you should make sure that the puppies are not over-vaccinated and dewormed before buying. Worming treatments in particular can cause permanent damage in puppies that cannot be justified by a potential benefit. If the dog breeder is critical of your questions, that is also a good sign. American Bulldog Breed Overview The American Bulldog is a fairly large breed with a height of inches for boys, inches for girls. Weight ranges from pounds in males, pounds in females. These dogs are strong, but proportionally built, and the breed has a rather formidable appearance. The exterior is a bit rough — American Bulldogs embody strength and power. Boys are larger and more massive, girls are slightly smaller, but without a hint of weakness or thin bones. The muzzle is elongated, wedge-shaped, the feet are not so clearly expressed. Cope with the role of hunters or detection dogs. Classic Johnson — massive and squat dogs similar to English bulldogs. The muzzle is square with a sharp stop. Often they have deep folds in the neck and head. These bulldogs are ideal for guards. Sometimes dog breeders include descriptions of two more types of the breed in the classification: Williamson — includes 2 subtypes: long-legged, extremely aggressive dogs and massive, balanced animals. Pantera are mini-bulldogs weighing up to 75 pounds, obtained by crossing classic and standard individuals. Modern breed members combine the traits of the Scott and Johnson types, as the main goal of breeders is to obtain hardy dogs with first-class performance. The main purpose of the American Bulldog is as a companion and bodyguard. Color and type of coat The body of the American Bulldog is covered with short fur, the length of which does not exceed 0. Permitted colors of the American breed: White — monochromatic or with small brindle or rufous markings. White-brindle, white-red from pale fawn to deep red — the background color can be either white or colored. Accordingly, in the first case, large spots of permitted colors will be scattered over the body, in the second — large white marks. Tiger, red-brindle — any shades are permissible from dark with red or fawn brindle to light with rare dark markings. The brighter and richer the colors, the better. Black, black and tan, blue, piebald with black markings without brindle, tricolor, marble colors, as well as the presence of a dark mask on the face are disqualifying defects of the breed. Before buying a puppy, it is recommended to get a full description of the breed — visit exhibitions, talk with breeders and other owners. Only an experienced dog breeder can handle a willful dog with a difficult character. It is important to correctly assess the strength and make sure that the future owner will definitely be able to subdue the dominant animal. It is better to buy a puppy from a reliable kennel or breeder. Sick pets or dogs with serious defects of temperament are often sold through ads on the Internet. Such an American bulldog is dangerous not only for others but also for the owner. A responsible breeder will be happy to tell you about the characteristics of the breed, the advantages and disadvantages of each puppy, not only give a verbal description but also demonstrate the litter and the parents. If mental instability is observed, it is worth contacting another nursery. Healthy American Bulldog puppies are active and curious, they do not show aggression and do not hide when they see a new person. A good puppy is evidenced by: strong, moderately well-nourished body; shiny coat without an unpleasant odor; clean eyes and ears;.
