These dogs are mutts German Shepherds mixed with Miniature Poodles, Shelties or other smaller breeds. Once more, be certain to not decide on your future dog based on looks alone. A stable temperament and good health is much more integral than a certain size or weight. Working lines vs show lines The German Shepherd was originally bred as a working dog. The steps below summarise the training routine that I have followed with my young dog, Trade, who has an easy-going temperament. I began to train him properly in the New Year when he was 9 — 10 months old, though I usually wait until the shooting season is over when I have time to do a little each day on a regular basis. Step 1: Foundations By the age of 9 — 10 months, Trade had been toilet trained, knew his name and came back when I called him. He had been well socialised and behaved in company on a lead, was used to going out in my vehicle and had learned to swim. Trade has never been chastised for carrying something he should not, e. I then place the item out of reach. Crucially, by this age we had built up a good bond before formal training began. Step 2: Heelwork It was so wet and muddy at home so I started training on the patio and in our yard where the pup is restricted to a certain area and there are no distractions. We began with heelwork on the lead. To keep the exercise interesting, I walked in straight lines, did figures of eight, included the occasional tight turn and altered my pace. This all helped to keep Trade focused on what we were doing. If he didn't sit immediately, I repeated the command whilst pushing his bottom down with my left hand. Once confident with this routine, I put a lightweight collar on him and progressed to walking to heel off the lead, using my hands to encourage him to keep his head up and concentrate on me, when necessary. If he did move, I calmly walked up to him and, holding his collar, took him back to the exact spot he moved from in a quiet but positive manner. I slowly built up the distance until I could walk around him in a huge circle. Once he did this perfectly, I introduced the recall. Instead of always walking back to him, I would call him back to me, encouraging him to come straight to my hands which were cupped gently in front of my hips. Once I was happy with this, I began to mix up heelwork with sit and stay, and recall. When he didn't move, I quietly picked the dummy up myself. Gradually — over several days — I built on this until I could throw a couple of dummies, one at a time, over and around him and he remained steady. It is always important to lift the pup's top lip out of the way when you put a dummy in his mouth. Trade was reluctant to do this at first, but with patience and perseverance over several days, he accepted it. Slowly, I built on this until I could walk away backwards the length of the lead and call him to me, concentrating on perfecting a good delivery, using my hands to encourage him to bring the dummy right to me with his head held nice and high. Step 6: Retrieving Next, we worked on being sent for a retrieve. I then bent down and pointed my right hand towards the dummy whilst looking at the top of his head to make sure he was looking past my hand at it, before saying his name positively and at the same time letting go of one end of the lead so that he instinctively ran forward and picked the dummy. Initially, I sat back on my heels, which encouraged him to run straight back to me. Slowly we built on this until the lead was no longer needed. Sometimes I would send him for the dummy, sometimes I'd pick it up myself, or I'd walk him to heel in the opposite direction before sending him. On other occasions, I would stand well back from Trade and throw a dummy over his head, call him to me and then send him for the dummy from my position. I like to vary things as this keeps him interested and wondering what I am going to do next. He was at first a little unsure, so I repeated it in a lighter tone, to which he responded. In return, I praised him quietly. Always remember, training a dog is like building a house — it is imperative that the foundations are put down properly, otherwise, sooner or later, cracks will appear. Keep it light and encouraging when you praise, and low and gruff when you scold, so your puppy knows the difference. Especially if you have a boisterous puppy. Keep everything calm and relaxed, and do things in your time. And yet, many new owners get so caught up in the cuteness of these bundles of fur that they disregard any training until the dog is much older. Sometimes new owners are just overwhelmed with taking care of their new puppy. Others lack the information needed to make good decisions regarding training for their new family member. Unfortunately, though, some bad behaviors or missed socialization and exposure opportunities are difficult to address with an older dog. So, if your goal is for you new retriever to eventually grow into an excellent duck dog, here is a guide to raising your Lab puppy to be a duck or gun dog. Picking up the puppy The journey with your new retriever pup starts the day you pick him or her up from the breeder. Hopefully you have done your homework and selected a litter of puppies with parents who have proven trainability. If you have a pick from the litter, you will want to take some time to observe the puppies. Even so, most trainers will tell you that picking a puppy is a complete crapshoot, meaning there really is no way to know how good the dog will be while looking at them as a puppy. Genetics and a proven pedigree are the best way to stack the odds in your favor from the start. Beyond that, if you have a good breeder, they are the next best source for information regarding the pups. A good breeder will give you a recommendation based on what you plan to use the pup for and your family situation. Check out this post on searching for a great retriever puppy and what to look for in breeders. If possible, bring someone with you to pick up the puppy. While you can put a puppy in a crate to transport them home, leaving the litter is a traumatic time for most puppies. Being held on the way home is a good way to start bonding with the puppy. All opinions and recommendations are my own. The first week raising your Labrador Retriever puppy There is very little training needed the first week you have your puppy home. Use this time to hold, pet and play with your new puppy. Bonding with the puppy is important and this is a good time to do that. You will likely be exhausted this week from getting up multiple times each night to let your puppy outside. Learn more in What should I do the first week with my new Lab puppy? Socialization is key for retriever gun dog puppies While socialization is important for all dogs, it is essential for retriever puppies destined to hunt. Socialization is the act of putting your retriever puppy in new situations and allowing the puppy to figure it out. Your puppy may handle new situations well, or she might show timid or frightened behaviors. This is not the time to coddle your future gun dog. Dogs are very aware of their owners and if you act or acknowledge your puppies fear, they will likely think you are scared too. This is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve with socialization. We want puppies to learn to adjust quickly to new situations. We want them to learn how to figure out new conditions and handle them without fear or hesitation. Puppies need to be socialized to people also. Let your puppy interact with people of all ages, including children. In addition, it can be helpful if they are also socialized to other dogs and cats. And yet we see too many retrievers with little to no retrieving desire. Sometimes this is just the result of bad breeding, but it can also be the result of poor introduction to retrieving or using the wrong items for retrieving. Many people like to play fetch with their puppy using a ball or Frisbee. But if your puppy is destined to be a hunting partner, this is going to make some retrieving problems down the line. We may use a ball to encourage a very young week old puppy to retrieve, IF, and only IF, the puppy is struggling with retrieving desire. Otherwise, we strongly discourage ongoing use of these items. Gun dogs and duck dogs are working dogs and they need to retrieve birds that fall to the ground. The rolling action of the ball or frisbee will create an excitement and energy that will make retrieving birds seem boring. We have found that dogs that have only retrieved balls or Frisbee often struggle when they need to retrieve a bumper or bird. Expose your Labrador puppy to common hunting elements A retriever that is going to be expected to hunt, should be introduced to hunting equipment and elements at an early age. Hills and mounds, flat areas and shallow divots are terrain that a hunting retriever should learn to traverse with ease. In addition to land, different water is also an important factor. Lakes are good, but you should also try to expose your puppy to dirty water. Water with lily pads, cat tails and algae are all things a duck dog will need to handle to work. Hunting equipment Labrador retriever puppies need to learn all about the equipment you use when hunting. Doing this when they are young and continuing the exposure as they grow, will make this second nature to them. Boats and blinds If you hunt out of a boat or blind, introduce your puppy to it. For boats, start on land. Get your puppy comfortable getting in and out of the boat. Throw retrieves from the boat. Similarly, introduce your dog to the blind as a good thing. If you are using a dog blind or hut, make sure your spend lots of time getting your pup comfortable going into and out of it. Make it a fun place to go to get retrieves. Duck or goose decoys If you will use decoys when hunting, take time to expose your puppy to them. Many times over the next few months, put some out on your lawn and let your puppy learn what they are. Eventually, move them to water and again allow your pup to explore them. Throw retrieves through them and teach the dog that he can ignore the decoys. Guns This is one of the most important things that you need to exposure your new puppy to. And it really needs to be done right. The last thing you want to do is create a gun-shy dog. That is very difficult to fix and the dog may never be able to hunt if the damage is too deep. Basic obedience for your gun dog puppy Your puppy is ready to learn obedience early on, and you will find that if you start when they are only a couple months old, they will learn quicker and be more obedient as they age. This will make a huge difference as they get older. Teaching HERE to young pups will require a long lead. Squat down a few feet from your puppy and say HERE as you gently pull them to you. Praise is essential with young pups, but the praise should be given when the puppy does something right. For instance, you say SIT and push his bottom down. You can use treats to teach your puppy obedience and reward him or her for obeying commands. But treats should only be used for very young puppies under 4 months. Many Labs will soon learn to only obey when given a treat, that is not the lesson you want your dog to learn. It can be difficult to discipline a cute little puppy, but it is essential. He wanted a breed that could excel in the rainy climate and rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands. Marjoribanks perfected the breed for over 50 years, keeping meticulous notes and records of his work. Bloodhound and Irish Setter were eventually added to the mix to produce the Golden Retriever as we know it today. Poodle Breed History: While commonly associated with the French, the Poodle actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany over years ago. Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe. To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France. The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog. Goldendoodles followed suit and quickly caught on as one of the most popular varieties of Doodle! The size of the Goldendoodle breed is determined mostly by whether the Poodle parent was a standard, miniature, or toy. On top of that, the gender of the puppy and the genetics of the parents play important factors as well. There are three basic sizes of Goldendoodles—toy, mini, and standard. Teacup, Toy, Mini, Medium, Standard Toy Goldendoodles are the smallest and usually weigh less than 20 pounds and stand under 15 inches tall. A Miniature Goldendoodle will weigh in at around pounds and stand roughly inches tall. The Standard Goldendoodle, will weigh approximately pounds and stand about inches tall. In addition to those three sizes, there are two additional sizes used to be more specific. Teacup Goldendoodles describe dogs on the very small end of Toy Goldendoodles. Medium Goldendoodles describe dogs somewhere in the mid-range of Mini and Standard. Their fur can range anywhere from shaggy, like the Golden Retriever to curly like the Poodle and usually is of medium to long length. A minimum of brushing once per week is required for the Goldendoodle breed, with the ideal frequency being every other day if not every day for more curly-haired dogs. Are Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic? Do Goldendoodles Shed? While this can be true, due to the unpredictability of genetics, there is no guarantee that any particular dog, or litter of dogs will be hypoallergenic. Since many dog breeds are the product of poor breeding, it can be debated whether or not your average Goldendoodle really has the best of both worlds. While these two breeds are not a contrast in terms of temperament, they are different in various aspects. Of course, Poodles are no guard dogs but they can definitely be more suspicious of strangers or at the very least, be quite reserved with them. With the family, both dogs should ideally be calm according to their respective breed standards. However, the Retriever side needs to be physically exercised and mentally stimulated. As with any dog breed, whether you should get a male or female dog depends on a lot of factors. You also have to make sure your potential new dog gets along with the existing dog which is often a real challenge, especially with rescues. Part of that is owed to fact that females are generally smaller than males. However, there are very calm males out there while females can have lots of behavioral issues, depending on their previous environment and training or lack thereof. Which is better: Goldendoodle or Labradoodle? Both breeds are created with the Poodle as foundation and the Golden Retriever on one side and the Labrador on the other side. The Goldie and the Lab are two of the most popular dogs in the United States and various other countries around the world. Do Goldendoodles Shed? Yes, Goldendoodles shed. Dogs need around calories per pound per day to maintain a healthy weight, and the average Goldendoodle weighs in at an average of pounds. Of course, Goldendoodles can vary greatly in size , and their caloric requirements need to be adjusted accordingly. Growing puppies will especially need loads of exercise and play to burn off excess energy. A common rule of thumb is 5 minutes for every month of age, twice a day until adult. This would mean a 5-month-old Goldendoodle puppy should get around 25 minutes of exercise twice a day. Adult and growing Goldendoodles love to swim, which can provide them with valuable exercise. Their playful nature and high agility are great for catching balls and sticks. Because Goldendoodles can have such variations in size, their exercise needs will vary too. For example, a miniature Goldendoodle will require far less yard space and exercise than a larger one. They are obedient and athletic and love learning and responding to commands. While Goldendoodles can begin responding to basic commands as early as 4 months of age, formal training should only begin at months. The best training method for any dog is using positive reinforcement , which is the concept that rewarding good behavior will lead to more of that behavior in the future. They will benefit greatly from agility training too, as they are amazingly agile and eager to please. Their fur type can vary widely due to their mix of genetics. They can have straight, silky hair like their Golden Retriever ancestors or the wiry, curly hair that comes with Poodle genes. Mostly, their coats are a happy medium between the two. Depending on your particular Goldendoodle, their coat may also need regular trimming. One of the best-known traits of Goldendoodles is the fact that they hardly, if ever, shed. If your Goldendoodle has curly or wavy hair like its Poodle parents, regular, daily brushing is essential. If their coat is more similar to a Golden Retriever, regular brushing is not as essential. Both Poodles and Golden Retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia, so this can be a concern in Goldendoodles. Other common issues among these breeds are eye problems and ear infections. Regular eye checks with a vet are recommended, and making sure your Goldendoodles ear canal remains dry will help mitigate any ear issues, especially if they have big, droopy ears. If you notice your dog scratching and itching incessantly, a trip to the vet is in order. It is widely recommended to neuter males and spay females unless you intend on breeding. This has many associated health benefits. For males, it can prevent testicular cancer, lessen aggression, and prevent them from wandering off looking for females, which can get them lost or injured. Spaying a female will assist in preventing uterine infections and cancer. It is recommended to spay a female before her first heat, as this will help prevent these complications. If you intend to breed a female Goldendoodle, you should wait until she has experienced at least one or two heat cycles , as it is far better for her health. Minor Conditions. Therefore, there is no guarantee that your purchased Goldendoodle puppy will fit within your desired weight or size range. Goldendoodle Energy or Activity Level Goldendoodles or Groodles generally have moderate energy levels with smaller Goldendoodles having fewer energy levels than their larger kin. They require playtime or regular good walks and generally regular exercises every day. They can also serve as perfect therapy dogs. Both Parents of the standard Goldendoodle tend to be quick and smart learners. Start socializing and training early and use positive reinforcement methods such as play, food, and praise as rewards to make a great and lovable companion. Also, Goldendoodles are perceived to be hypoallergenic dogs. This means they can be surrounded by people with dog allergies. This is mainly because the poodle one of the parent breeds , is also perceived to be hypoallergenic. But caused by dander which is the dead skin cells shed by all dogs and even people. Note: No scientific evidence currently exists saying that a breed or hybrid is more allergenic or less allergenic than any other breed. People with allergies can react differently to different dogs, so no reputable breeder can give a guarantee that their dog is hypoallergenic. Cross Breeding a Perfect Goldendoodle Just to achieve a certain temperament, working ability, and appearance, humans have been cross-breeding dog types for millennia. This is mainly how most purebreds like the Australian Shephard, the Affenpinscher, the Brussels griffon, the Leonberger, the Doberman pinscher, the German wirehaired pointer, and the Black Russian Terrier, became popular. But simply cross-breeding two breeds constantly is not enough. To be able to achieve consistency in size, temperament, and appearance, breeders need to carefully select puppies with the desired characteristics and breed them for several generations to establish their traits. The demand for hybrids like the Goldendoodle became high in the last years. This is because people generally want dogs that are different from the dogs they are used to. Goldendoodle Generations Although responsible breeding can reduce the risk of potential problems, their pedigree or Goldendoodle generation plays an important role in their physical traits and risk of potential health problems. The first-generation Groodle always inherits the shedding gene from the golden retriever and sheds everything from a small number to an almost complete retriever. Because F1s always almost shed, I recommend getting a genetically coat-tested doodle from multiple generations. What are the Labeling standards for Goldendoodle Generations? It can be confusing at first, but it gets easier once you get used to it. The Number Numbers are the main indicator of the generation to which Goldendoodle belongs. For instance, number 1 indicates the 1st generation while 2 indicates the 2nd generation. This letter means backcross. It indicates that the Goldendoodle generation needs to be returned to the purebred poodle. Gene mixing tends to reduce the health risks that might be associated with the purebred specimen The Shedding: The majority range from Light to Heavy shedding Potential for Allergy: For a family with Severe to moderate allergies, I do not recommend getting this Generation. However, it is okay for a family with mild allergies. The Coat: Their coat can be naturally grown from inches, and they would require regular grooming and combing. You can choose to trim the fur coat every couple of months. This could help reduce maintenance costs for your Groodle. The Grooming: Moderate-High grooming is required. Image source: Copper Oaks Mini Goldendoodles When you backcross, you breed a hybrid back to one of its parent breeds. For an F1 Goldendoodle, the b would mean that it was bred back to a parent purebred. It could either be a purebred retriever or a purebred poodle. Genetically, It means they are still the first generation. However, the characteristics of either the poodle or the retriever are enhanced. Some breeders often cross a Groodle and Poodle to increase the possibility of having lower-shedding litters. That means the level of shedding reflects the level of a First generation low — high shedding. When a breeder coat tests the pups, this factor may be apparent in the first few weeks of life. It can be anywhere over 35 inches and could become curly, straight, or wavy. If you are worried about how often you brush their fur, you can choose to trim the fur to save grooming time and make your dog comfortable, especially during winter. The Grooming: Requires average — high maintenance. The 2nd Generation — F2 F2 Goldendoodle. Image source: okefeildacres. Because of how genetics work, you might end up with either full golden retrievers or full poodles after cross-breeding two Groodles. The Coat: The coat can be wavy, curly, or straight. Although it is worth noting that the coat texture of young pups is not enough to indicate the future shedding level as the shedding gene is distinct from the curl gene. The Grooming: This depends significantly on the inherited genetic mix of each pup. Being a first-generation Groodle, the F1 parent has a combination of predictable coat characteristics both the non-shedding and the shedding genes.
