In this case, Bubba will be with us for almost a year and a half. Bubba Training and socialization for week-old Labrador puppy Here are the things we worked on this week while training of Bubba. Working on control As Bubba matures, we need to work on more control. Bubba must learn to control herself in different situations. We continue to work on these control situations, but we are now adding more opportunities to exhibit control. This is challenging for a puppy her age, she wants to bolt out of the crate, but she must exhibit control and wait for the release command. Obedience training your week-old puppy We continue to work on obedience training using a chain collar and heeling stick. Bubba is learning to walk at our side, but it is far from perfect. She is also sitting on command, with occasional reminders from the heeling stick. I continue to work on strengthening her SIT. I can currently walk away from Bubba steps, and she will remain seated, but she makes lots of mistakes. I move my body while I stand a couple feet from her, and command SIT at the same time. It is very hard for puppies to understand that they must remain seated and still when someone else is moving. But it will all come. It just takes a lot of repetition and enforcement. I will slowly extend the distance between Bubba and myself. A stronger SIT will also take some maturity. As Bubba gets older the obedience will get easier for her to understand and to complete the necessary commands. But I will also make the training more difficult by adding distractions. It is not easy, and I did resort to treat training as I bid time to teach with the electronic collar. The treat training has helped a lot but has also resulted in some bad behaviors. Bubba is now jumping on me more because she anticipates a treat from my pocket. I have been firm and consistent in correcting the jumping, but it is most definitely a result of the treat training. In addition, Bubba thinks she should get a treat for doing things she has been doing for weeks without a treat. I will continue with the treats for the HERE command for the next few weeks, and then I will start weaning her off them. Introducing your Labrador puppy to hunting elements Bubba is almost done her introduction to hunting elements except for gunfire. Gunfire must be done slowly, with the noise getting incrementally closer to Bubba over time. We have already started this introduction, but it will be several months or more before we move the gunfire right next to her. Introducing your puppy decoys in water Swimming is something Bubba loves to do, so this week we added water marks with decoys in the water. We give her the time to check out the decoys with no correction and when she finally picks up the bumper, we praise her with a Good Dog. A few marks through decoys will be enough to teach Bubba that the decoys are not the thing she should be retrieving. I will continue this training for Bubba for the next couple weeks and then will stop since she will be teething, and I do not want to cause her any pain while doing this training. Increased distance for assistant marks Assistant marks are vital for teaching Bubba to mark watch where the bird fell so she can run to the correct area. We make sure she gets marks every day, but we limit the number of marks she gets to three. The reason we do this is because with young pups you want to build their retrieving desire. Desire is built not by giving your puppy unlimited retrieves. It is built by limiting the number of retrieves the puppy gets at any one time. My husband likes to compare it to a Thanksgiving dinner. If you sit down and eat a huge plate full of food, you are not going to be hungry a few hours later. But if you only get a little piece of turkey for your meal and then are told that is all there is, you will be very hungry the next time you are offered food. If you have a dog struggling with desire, you want to limit the retrieves. Sometimes to only one per day, or one every other day. Bubba is not struggling with desire at all, so we stick to three retrieves per day. Final thoughts on training for your week-old Labrador puppy Your puppy is probably advancing well in training at this point. You should see some marked improvement in her obedience and behavior. It is important to go at a happy pace for you both. Positive reinforcement training is the right choice for your puppy because there are no negative consequences to getting something wrong. But you can still both suffer from burnout and frustration if you try to reach the later puppy training stages without totally aceing the earlier developments. Your Puppy Training Schedule This may not be exactly the same for each puppy, especially with retrieving which is more Labrador specific. However, it gives you a rough idea. Constantly changing direction. Stopping frequently for cuddles and rewards. This means I blow the recall whistle whenever the puppy runs towards me, no compulsion, and no whistle unless the recall is already underway. Socialisation: Lots almost daily of outings to different places rural and urban carried Visits to family and friends. Bite inhibition: Discourage hard biting, allow mouthing. Working with food: Learning how to take food gently without snatching or grabbing at the treat pot. I still give the puppy lots of encouragement by running away as soon as I blow the whistle. Socialisation: More socialisation, at least twice a week to busy public places. Bite inhibition: Discourage hard biting, allow gentle mouthing. Retrieving: Encourage chase and pick up retrieve drive. Hand touch: I teach all new puppies to touch my hand with their noses. This is a great foundation for other skills. Recall: Puppy recall continues, reduce my run to a walk, avoid any distractions. Still frequently blow the recall whenever the pup runs towards me of her own free will. Socialisation: From ground level after vaccination. No other leash walking at all Bite inhibition: No biting, gentle mouthing allowed. Retrieving: Continue to build drive. Positions: I introduce three positions — sit, stand, down. What to expect from your 3 month old puppy Most three month old puppies will be sleeping through the night. And will be having less potty training accidents in the house. What to expect from your 4 month old puppy Your 4 month old puppy will be pretty much potty trained, but accidents still happen if they are left alone too long. Biting is usually starting to subside now, and many four month old puppies will be able to mouth at your hand without hurting you. At this point I start to discourage all mouthing. I teach every puppy to let me touch her face or approach her with my hand, food, a leash etc while holding eye contact and not grabbing at me, or at what is in my hand. This is the age at which people often start to push forward with training. Your 4 month old puppy is capable of quite a lot. There is nothing wrong with teaching your puppy different cues and even some tricks. I recommend you still avoid long duration activities at this point as they are a common stumbling point with puppies young enough to have a short attention span. A ten second sit is ample. Add mild distractions Recall: Fade additional cues. Begin to whistle the pup and stand still. Add mild distractions. Clicker train to polish this in more mouthy puppies. No commands are needed for this. Gradual introduction of distractions. Advanced puppy training begins in earnest This is where I start a programme of sporting training with my Labs. You can begin raising your standards and expectations, asking for longer and more complex behaviors. Teaching your puppy to walk to heel nicely for longer distance and past all kinds of distractions and temptations. Or teaching your puppy to sit and stay for longer periods of time, and even while you go out of sight or while other dogs play nearby. What to expect from your six month old puppy Six months is a common time for people to have a lot of questions and to be struggling with a few challenges. This is now a very bouncy, quite powerful and rapidly maturing young dog. And you may need to patch up a few holes in his training or manners. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. All it said was that there is an extremely sick Frenchie in a shelter scheduled for euthanasia today that we were trying to pull him out and whether I would foster to which I said of course. It was exactly 3 days later when I got a call from the director of the rescue. Grayson made it to our vet and his evaluation was not good. He had a left sided failure caused by a genetic heart issue complicated by heartworms, a completely preventable condition, and he was given a week to live. I felt like there had to be more I could do for this dog and then it hit me — Grayson is dying and he never got to experience anything! We took him to the beach where he tried to chase the seagulls even though he could barely walk, to a ranch where he got kissed by a wild pony, on a convertible ride to get a puppachino, we cooked him steak, he met and peed on a giant tortoise, had a professional photoshoot and visited Bayou Bend Gardens. Before we knew it, a week turned into two, then three and before we knew it he had people overseas reaching out about his story. People were asking about heartworms and he was making a difference. Just as we began hoping Grayson may celebrate New Year with us, an upper respiratory infection hit him with an incredible strength. For two weeks we fought as hard as we could for him hoping his appetite would pick back up knowing well this may be it. And then he finally had a good day, and one after that, he got excited about meal times and I felt like I could breathe again. As of today, Grayson got to eat Turkey on Thanksgiving and Christmas both, he celebrated Mother's and Father's day, he has met endless friends and lived a life he should have had from the start. None of this changes the fact that his condition is terminal. When his symptoms become severe enough and he can no longer enjoy his life, we will be there to hold him as he crosses over. But it will not be today. This is a story of a rescue taking in a dog that will never make it out. A dog that never stood a chance but a dog whose life has been turned around because the rescue stepped in. His story could have ended in that shelter but it did not. Living with Grayson for the past 2 months has taught us more than I would have ever thought a dog could. Grayson was abused and he will pay the ultimate price yet he is not bitter at all, the opposite in fact. He loves people and wants to be loved on all day long. He has learned his new name within days and runs to us as fast as his body allows him to. Having him here has made us to cherish every single day because we are not promised tomorrow. However, it is important to remember that the presence of a heart murmur is just an indication that there may be underlying heart disease. In itself the heart murmur is not a diagnosis. If your dog has had a heart murmur detected but is not showing symptoms of heart disease, it is possible that the heart disease may not yet have developed significantly enough to affect the normal functioning of the heart. However, this situation can change and cardiac symptoms can develop rapidly. This is very important as it means that appropriate treatment to assist heart function can be started promptly if and when it is required. These disappear by 5 months of age If a heart murmur is present from birth or develops shortly after birth, it will probably be detected by your veterinary surgeon at the first or second vaccinations. In puppies, there are two major types of heart murmurs. This type of murmur is soft typically a grade 2 or softer and is not caused by underlying heart disease. An innocent flow murmur typically disappears by months of age. However if a puppy has a loud murmur grade 3 or louder , or if the heart murmur is still easily heard with a stethoscope after months of age, the likelihood of an underlying congenital heart problem i. Examples of congenital heart problems in dogs are patent ductus arteriosus, aortic stenosis and pulmonic stenosis. Interestingly, some types of congenital heart disease in puppies have very characteristic sounding heart murmurs. If congenital heart disease is suspected, your vet will almost certainly want you to see a specialist for further assessment. Puppy strangles is especially problematic in Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, Brittany spaniels, springer spaniels, and dachshunds. Signs Puppy strangles is a result of an immune malfunction. The skin, especially on the face, becomes infected with deep sores. These sores can become so involved that they reach the lymph nodes of the neck. This neck area swells with hard knots under the jaw until it looks like the baby dog will strangle—hence the name. Puppy pyoderma is characterized by pustules on the face, and painful swelling of the lips, eyelids, and face. This may also include swellings in the groin area, where the lymph glands are located. Infected neck lymph nodes often become abscessed, break open and drain. Signs of puppy strangles go beyond the facial sores. Puppies develop a fever, become lethargic, and stop eating, which can lead to low blood sugar that complicates the condition. The draining sores on the face must be diagnosed as pyoderma, as opposed to juvenile demodectic mange that looks similar. Treatment for puppy strangles such as steroids to relieve the inflammation could actually make the demodectic mange worse. Once your veterinarian has diagnosed the condition, ask for tips on how to help your puppy heal. Some home treatment can relieve the discomfort, too. Home Care Apply hot packs to the sore face two or three times a day. Moist heat brings blood circulation to the area to help heal the wound more quickly and clean out the infection. Apply moist heat five minutes on, five minutes off, until the cloth has cooled, and then reapply. Soak with warm water at least once a day to soften the crusties, and then gently wipe them off. Follow up by washing the area with a 2. For the lymph nodes that have abscessed, clean the spots three to four times a day with warm water on a cloth applied for five to 10 minutes at a time. As with any abscess, these spots will be very tender, so be gentle. Rough cleaning also could increase the chance that the area will scar. Veterinary Treatment Your vet may need to lance abscesses that have not opened on their own. Flushing out the deep wound can be accomplished using a syringe without the needle or even a turkey baster or squirt gun filled with an antiseptic solution like diluted Betadine. Typically, several weeks of antibiotics from your vet will be needed to resolve any deep infection and prevent secondary bacterial infections in the draining wounds. Your vet may also prescribe steroids to reduce the inflammation. Jordan Vitt, a veterinary cardiologist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, says the three types of congenital heart defects seen most often are patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonic stenosis, and subaortic stenosis. Patent Ductus Arteriosus Patent ductus arteriosus PDA is a condition in which a blood vessel that should close at birth fails to close. This problem can occur in any breed of dog. This can be performed by a surgeon by tying off the PDA through a surgical incision in the chest or minimally invasively by a cardiologist, like Dr. The minimally invasive technique is performed by placing a heart catheter through the femoral artery to place a device that will occlude, or close, the ductus. This narrowing of normal passages makes it harder for the blood to move from the heart to the lungs or from the heart to the body. Stenoses may affect the pulmonic valve or the aortic valve. Vitt says. This procedure involves using a heart catheter to place a balloon at the stenotic valve. The balloon is then inflated to widen the valve opening and improve the flow of blood. The balloon is removed after the procedure. A newer technique for repairing subaortic stenosis begins with threading a smaller balloon, which when inflated exposes small surgical blades, to incise or cut the scar tissue before using a larger balloon to open up the narrowed valve region. All of these minimally invasive techniques are performed by the cardiology service at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Early Detection Because congenital heart defects are something puppies are born with, there is no way to prevent this disease. However, early detection and treatment improve the prognosis for the patient. Most puppies have soft murmurs at a young age, and most murmurs go away on their own by the time the puppy is four to six months old. A murmur that is characterized as a grade 2 or less is very likely to resolve; on the other hand, Dr. Vitt advises that a heart murmur at grade 3 or higher should be evaluated by a veterinary cardiologist as soon as possible. Any murmur that is still present at six months or that is getting worse should also be evaluated. The earlier the detection, the sooner the problem can be evaluated and potentially fixed for the best long-term outcome. If a problem is detected in any of the puppies, the owner may opt to have an echocardiogram or ultrasound of the heart as well. In addition, the cardiology service will soon offer breed-specific screening days. On these days, dog breeds predisposed to certain heart diseases will be evaluated at a discounted price to encourage early detection and potential treatment. The prospective owner aspires for the puppy to be healthy and fit well with the new family, often acting on impulse driven by the opportunity and enthusiasm to get a dog. Instead, a pre-purchase examination before selling is strongly recommended in order to evaluate the health status of the animal. The ground rules for a pre-purchase examination are the same as those applicable to clinical evaluation. On the one hand, there are some buyers for whom any risk is acceptable as they do not perceive clinical signs as a problem, but rather as a normal breed-specific characteristic [ 1 ]. On the other hand, some buyers may want assistance to arrive at an informed judgment on the risks related to buying a dog, given that there may be diseases associated with some breeds which reduce the life span or make it unsuitable for its intended use by the purchaser. Indeed, heart diseases of proven or suspected hereditary origin in puppies may constitute a defect vice in buying and selling, making the animal inappropriate for its intended use, or significantly decreasing its value [ 2 ]. The innocent murmur is a common physiological finding in puppies, generally as a result of physiologic anemia. Rising hematocrit in growing puppies can explain the spontaneous disappearance of innocent murmurs with aging [ 4 ]. Generally, puppies are sold when they are at least 6—8 weeks old to ensure that the puppy has received an adequate supply of milk from the mother dog and has completed the period of socialization. Conversely, the detection of a continuous murmur in a puppy requires a complete cardiologic and medical workup. Once the presence of a murmur has been identified, the aim for the veterinarian during the pre-purchase clinical examination is to determine the existence, severity, and exact origin of the underlying cardiac disease. Cardiac examination should be performed to evaluate heart rate, rhythm, and the presence of normal and abnormal sounds. Auscultation should be executed in a silent room, with the animal in standing position, auscultating the precordial valve areas in both sides of the chest and, if an abnormal sound is detected, the point of maximum intensity should be identified. Given the gaps in the literature regarding a clinical protocol or guidelines for the identification of a cardiac murmur during puppy trade, the authors describe how to categorize heart murmurs in the animal during a pre-purchase examination and its significance from a clinical and legal viewpoint, as murmurs can be physiological or pathological. Clinical Examination of the Cardiovascular System Clinical examination is a great help to the veterinarian in the evaluation of the cardiovascular system. Variations in mucous membrane colour and capillary refill time, jugular distension, dependent oedema, tachycardia, and tachypnoea are common findings of congestive heart failure CHF [ 5 ]. The auscultation of the heart is fundamental for the evaluation of the cardiovascular system. Normally, it is possible to hear two heart sounds: S1, caused by the closing of the atrioventricular valves at the beginning of the systole, and S2, generated by the closing of the semilunar valves at the end of the systolic event. Two other heart sounds also can be found in pathological conditions: S3, caused by the rapid filling of the ventricles in diastole, and S4, generated by atrial contraction. Additional sounds generated by turbulent blood flows are called murmurs. The heart murmurs are classified according to intensity, frequency, quality, duration, configuration, primary location point of maximum intensity, PMI , and site s of radiation [ 6 ]. The intensity indicates the loudness of the cardiac murmur and is classified on a scale from 1 to 6 [ 6 ], as summarized in Table 1 [ 6 ]. This is strongly related to the blood velocity at the site of origin of the murmur and is classified as high, medium, or low. The murmurs that originate from mitral valve insufficiency typically have a high pitch [ 7 ], while the murmurs originating from aortic stenosis typically have a low or medium pitch [ 4 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. The quality or timbre of the heart murmurs indicates the type of sound, which can be soft, harsh, rumbling, musical or a mixture of these. The shape, also referred to as configuration, indicates the intensity that it assumes during the cardiac cycle; therefore, a murmur may be crescendo, decrescendo, crescendo-decrescendo or plateau. A crescendo murmur gradually increases in intensity, while a decrescendo murmur gradually decreases in intensity. A crescendo—decrescendo murmur is characterized by a gradual increase in intensity, followed by a gradual diminution. A plateau murmur conserves a moderate continuous intensity regardless of their intensity grade. The duration or timing indicates the portion of the cardiac cycle that the murmur occupies and not in which the murmur onsets. Murmurs may be systolic early systolic, mid-systolic, late systolic, or holosystolic , diastolic early diastolic, mid-diastolic, late diastolic, or holo-diastolic or continuous. A continuous murmur initiates during the systole and continues extending on the second sound, throughout diastole or part of thereof. The location indicates areas on the precordium where the murmur is perceived with a higher intensity and correspond at the site of murmur origin Figure 1. When a murmur is heard at a site other than the point of maximal intensity, it is said to radiate. The murmur may radiate near to the site of origin following the direction of turbulent jet. An aortic stenosis murmur radiates up the carotid arteries, while mitral murmurs radiate dorsally within the thorax. The first and often most challenging step is to determine the clinical importance of a murmur. It is essential to distinguish pathological heart murmurs from functional ones and, in puppies, from innocent heart murmurs [ 11 ].
