These come primarily from "Gold-Rush Kennels" lineage who have a long history of top dogs. These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Pups generally are released to their new homes around 8 weeks old. We do not recommend getting them much later, as the sooner they are with you, the sooner, and better, they will bond with you, instead of us or their siblings or parents. The ideal bonding time is from weeks old and gradually decreases at around 12 weeks of age; however, you will not find a golden that won't bond with a human at any age! The pencil lines in each step is drawn in blue so you can observe the most recent shapes that you should be illustrating. Time Needed: 30 minutes Start the head off by drawing an oval shape. Draw Floppy Ears Erase some of the head and add floppy ears. Add in the second leg next to the first one. The fluffy part of the tail should be added towards the right side of the page. How to Draw a Golden Retriever For this tutorial I decided to draw a golden retriever as I see a lot of people struggle with the coloring of Goldens. Goldens come in a variety of golden tones from a deep red to a pale, almost white golden color. This Golden Retriever is a mid-range golden color. I chose this reference for his sweet expression, which is common to this breed. Here is the reference photo from Pixabay. I cropped the original a bit. I thought the color would be a nice background to work on, giving a warm glow to the final drawing. Start with an Accurate Line Drawing I start with a sketch showing the details I want to draw and the placement of the important features. Getting the Eyes Right I usually always start with the eyes. The reference photo shows reflections of the window and shadows in the eye. I want to try to convey this in my drawing, so I start by placing those highlights with White. Then I start layering Sienna Brown, Chocolate, Light Umber, and Dark Brown into each eye using a sharp point and light pressure to build up the layers slowly. I outline the eye and draw the pupil with Black, and use Blue Slate in the highlights. Next, Draw the Hair Around the Eyes Remember to always look closely at the reference photo and observe how the fur is arranged and growing. Start at the root of the hair and draw outward the way the fur grows. This gives you a sharp line at the end of the hairs and makes the hair look more natural. Then I begin building up layers with lighter colors such as Light Umber, Beige, Peach, Sand, and Goldenrod, working from light to dark. I continue layering those colors, but if I see another color in the reference photo, I add it as I work. In addition, I keep drawing hair-like strokes in the direction the fur grows. I lay in the darkest areas in the ear with Sepia and Light Umber. I wash the whole ear with Sand using a light touch. Next I use White in the highlighted areas of the ear to create depth. Then I use a wash of Beige before going over the ear again with layers of Sepia and Light Umber to create more shadows. With each layer, I draw more details in the ear, repeating the same process with the colors mentioned until I am finished. When the ear is finished, I move to the other side of the face and ear using the same method and colors. Continue checking the reference photo as you work, and look for the color placement and apply colors accordingly. I drew the light and dark areas lightly with White and Light Umber to show the contours of the face. I finish the muzzle using the same colors as the rest of the fur. To start the nose, I mark the highlights with White and the darkest areas with Black. Drawing the Neck and Chest The next area is the fluffy hair beneath the chin and ear. I draw in the area with Light Umber. Using various colors as previously stated, I add several layers of color so I can use the solvent to blend them smoothly. You need 4 to 5 layers to get a smooth blend when using solvent. I use a light touch and draw lines to show definition in the fur and shadows. Sometimes, I also use the pencil on its side, softly creating a wash over the whole area. I repeated this step until I got the drawing where I wanted it. Once the main colors are in place, I continue adding more layers and details, still using pretty much the same colors throughout the piece. For the solvent blend, I apply the solvent with a little brush and make sure to follow the direction of the hair with the brush. This softens the colors without completely blending them and makes them look more natural. The solvent also makes the colors look brighter. I apply this with a small brush over the areas I blended with solvent. You can see this in this photo. The Final Steps Just before finishing the drawing, I place it in a comparison split photo to see how the colors compare side-by-side. I needed to add more Goldenrod and Greyed Lavender. I also added Dark Umber in the dark areas and then went in again with the Titanium White mixture to add more depth. To add whiskers, I first used White, then went over them with Titanium White mixture to punch them up. As you can see in the photos below, both the red Goldendoodles in our pack Chloe and Ruby had red puppy coats. Also, you can see in the photos that the coat color lightened over time. For our Goldendoodles, the coat color change was very gradual and happened into adulthood. From my research and years of connecting with other Doodle moms, this seems typical of many red Goldendoodles. Coat colors may fade or lighten even through adulthood. Progressive Retinal Atrophy Mini Goldendoodle Grooming and Hypoallergenicity The exact grooming needs of your miniature Goldendoodle will depend on the coat type they inherit from their parents. Goldendoodles with curly fur will need more grooming. Shedding hairs will get caught in their coat rather than falling around your home. But, this can lead to tangles and knots in their hair. Matted fur is painful for your dog and may need to be shaved off completely. A low shedding, hypoallergenic coat is a major selling point for modern Doodle dogs like the mini Goldendoodle. However, studies have revealed mixed opinions on whether or not hypoallergenic dogs even exist. The allergen that triggers a reaction to dogs is found in their dander, saliva, and sweat, rather than their hair itself. And, individual dogs from the same breed can impact you differently. Implementing a good cleaning routine is a good way to reduce allergens in your home. Spend some time with your chosen Goldendoodle before bringing them home to see if they trigger your allergy symptoms. Mini Goldendoodle Lifespan Lifespan can be difficult to predict in mixed breed dogs. But, by looking at the average lifespan of the purebred parent breeds, we can get a general idea. On average, Golden Retrievers live to 12 years old. Miniature Poodles have a slightly longer average, of just under 14 years. Smaller dogs tend to live longer average lives than large breed dogs. But, studies have also shown that mixed breed dogs live a longer average lifespan than purebred dogs. So, on average, a Goldendoodle should live well into their teens. Particularly if you offer them the best care possible! For an active family with lots of time to dedicate to training and grooming, a mini Goldendoodle can be a great pet. Red mini Doodles can make just as good a pet as any other shade! And, their beautiful fur is bound to receive plenty of compliments. But, this breed is not for everyone. Since they are a mixed breed, mini Goldendoodles can be quite unpredictable. And, despite their smaller size, mini Goldendoodles have very high exercise and mental stimulation needs. Mini Goldendoodles can be happier in smaller homes than the standard variety. You will also need to socialize them from a very young age to prevent aggression and fearfulness. Their small size is not an excuse to slack on training. These social, energetic dogs often need a lot more care than people realise. Finding Red Mini Goldendoodle Puppies Over everything else, your priority should be finding a reputable breeder when searching for a mini red Goldendoodle. Mixed breed dogs like this are very popular, which means the market is rife with unhealthy puppies and disreputable breeders. This includes puppy mills, pet stores, and so on. Choose a breeder who provides evidence of health testing, who provides the best care for their dogs and puppies, and who is very knowledgeable about the mix. Getting a puppy is not something to rush into! Some breeders will specialize in certain colors. So, you might have more success finding a red puppy by looking for breeders that exclusively breed red-toned dogs. But, in other cases, you might have to go on a waiting list for specific colors. Price often reflects popularity in dog breeds. And, mini Goldendoodles are a popular mix! The cost of these puppies will vary depending on demand, coat color, coat type, generation, and so on. Apricot vs Red Mini Goldendoodle Red and apricot are two of the most popular colors for the miniature Goldendoodle mix. However, red mini Goldendoodles tend to have darker, more pigmented fur than apricot varieties. The apricot dogs are more golden and less red! But, the label that a breeder puts on them can be down to personal opinion and the popularity of each color. Apricot and red mini Goldendoodles can vary in other features too. Including their hair type, overall appearance and their exact personality. But, this variation is more down to whatever features they inherit from their parents, rather than any links to coat color. Although this breed is very popular, it is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club. As long as they are well-socialized, Miniature Goldendoodles tend to make excellent family companions. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they will alert you of strangers at the door, they tend to warm up quickly as they are more interested in making friends and receiving attention. Mini Goldendoodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their smaller size makes them a great fit for apartment living or for bigger homes with yards where they can run.
