Theodore was our first dog and we wanted get our first dog from breeder for temperament and health reasons. Puppies require a lot of time and attention — especially in the first few months and we knew our desire to get a dog aligned with having the time to dedicate to a puppy. Our vet told us that socializing Theodore early on was important for his development so we made it a priority. We made a big effort to schedule several indoor play dates with immunized dogs we knew in our building during his first few weeks at home. We transitioned him off of pee pads once we our vet said it was safe to take him outside. He was fully potty trained by 5 months old. Did you work with a trainer? When Theodore was older, we did a few lessons to correct some habits like jumping on people, stealing objects and improve leash walking. She is wonderful with dogs and helps solve the problem you are having very quickly. How did you get him to like his crate? When we brought Theodore home, we placed his crate in our bedroom in a spot where he could see us when he was sleeping. We got this Precision wire crate in a size intermediate — 36 x 23 x 25 up to 70lbs he could grow into and we used the divider while he was potty training. Dogs enjoy a cave-like atmosphere and feel safe when their crate is enclosed. We covered the top and sides of his crate with a light blanket, leaving the front open for airflow. He hated his crate and cried. As a dog parent, it breaks your heart to see them crying. My husband slept on the floor with Theodore the first night and then after that we fully committed to getting Theodore adjusted to the crate. The advice we were given was to make the crate a place where exciting things were happening. We would give him lots of treats and praise as he went to his crate at night. We also put one of our t-shirts in the crate so our smell would be close. Before leaving the house, we would always give him a high value treat ex. Over the next few weeks he began to love his crate. By four months he was adjusted to his crate, never barked, cried or protested going in. Once it was clear he was happy in the crate, we began to let him sleep on the floor of our bedroom. John Paul Pet Lavender Mint Detangling Spray : Doodles get matted super easily, so we add this detangling spray into our grooming routine to help with the matting. Andis Pet Steel Comb : If you can keep your furbaby mat-free this comb is great for combing him or her out. Safari Dematting Comb : You are going to need a de-matting comb to helpwith matting especially as your puppy gets older. It is the best thing we have bought, and we use it all the time. Start doing this when they are little. We love this little set that includes the toothpaste, brush and finger brush. Towel : We keep two of these pet towels in the bathroom where we give Clifton a bath. They are great at absorbing the water after a bath. We also pack these when we take him to the dog beach or Florida. Mushers Secret Paw Wax : If your pup lives in a cold climate, this is perfect for their dry, cracked paws that will come in winter. Shopping for toys was one of my favorite parts when I first started shopping for Clifton. My advice is not to buy too many toys at first like I did. Your puppy is going to destroy those cute, stuffed animals quickly. Grab a few because they make for some cute photos and toys around the house, but also stock up on things that will help when they need to chew. One thing to keep in mind when getting toys is to avoid any rope toys. Pups can eat the strings and have them wrap around their intestines — which is NOT good. So just skip them altogether. It is supposed to help transition them because it has a battery heartbeat and a pouch to make it warm. If you can, ask the breeder to rub it on his mom or the other puppies so it smells like them. While you do not need a bed right away I do recommend getting a nice pad or elevated dog bed for training purposes, we regularly use pads or elevated beds for training, and for placing our dogs and puppies, we keep ours in the main area of our home to place our dogs when people come over, during dinner, etc. We recommend getting one with a divider that can be adjusted, it will make crate training easier when your puppy first comes home and will prevent you from having to buy multiple crates. You can purchase a nice pad or cushion for the crate but we do not recommend using it inside of the crate until you are sure they will not have accidents in the crate until then use a towel or small blanket that is easier to wash! The American version of the bulldog has longer legs, and it is faster and agiler than the English bulldog. Muscular, sturdy and powerful, they were used as working dogs for many tasks including guarding and hunting. The American bulldog is known for its loyalty and bravery. This dog has a happy, protective and energetic personality. This breed loves children and has strong protective instincts. When they are raised with cats and other dogs they will generally get along well, but they can be aggressive toward unknown cats and dogs. The American bulldog has a lifespan of about 10 to 12 years. Over time, the American bulldog came very close to extinction. But in the midth century two men decided to restore the American bulldog — John D. Johnson American bulldogs are also known as classic American bulldogs. This type of American bulldog is the larger of the two types. Typically the Johnson American bulldog will stand about 23 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 90 and pounds. The Johnson American bulldog has heavier bones, wider chests and boxier heads. It more closely resembles the English bulldog. It has an undershot bite. While the Scott line of bulldogs is usually pure white, the Johnson line of bulldogs is usually white in color with patches of red, brown or black. It has a wider and stockier body that most closely resembles a bull mastiff. A Johnson American bulldog can weigh pounds or more. The Johnson American bulldog has larger bones than the Scott American bulldog. His legs extend out to the sides of his body like his ancestor, the English bulldog. He has facial wrinkles and a signature underbite. The Scott American bulldog is often called the standard American bulldog. It stands about 22 to 27 inches at the shoulder. The Scott American bulldog looks like an oversized white pit bull. The bite is either level or a slight underbite. The Scott American bulldog is sleek and muscular, and it is smaller and more athletic than the Johnson American bulldog. The characteristics of the Scott American bulldog include a narrower head and muzzle and a slightly undershot jaw with a reverse scissors bite. The Scott American bulldog has a strong urge to chase prey and they can sometimes behave aggressively toward other dogs. With a muscular and sleek build, this breed is more agile and stands smaller than the Johnson American Bulldog. He also has a narrower head and a unique reverse scissor bite, which is characterized by an undershot jaw with lower teeth near the front of the mouth.
