Poodle crosses that exist. The Poodle Poodles are probably the most commonly used pedigree in the designer dog world. This is thought to be due to a combination of their hypoallergenic fur, trainable personalities and athleticism. Many wrongly assume they are French but this is, in fact, a German breed. They were traditionally used for duck hunting and were worked on both land and water. These dogs come in three different sizes: Toy, Miniature and Standard. This fact is surely to have added to their popularity over the years, with owners appreciating the options available to them. They are both the result of crossing a number of pedigrees, including the Bull Terrier and the Beagle. They would have hunted alongside Foxhounds. They were especially used for locating foxes and barking loudly to allow the rest of the dogs in the pack to know where they were. The strong prey drive of the Wire Fox Terrier remains to this day and this can pose an issue to owners when this dog is off lead. Appearance Wire-Poos are small dogs that rarely exceed 32cm in height. They weigh between 9kg and 18kg and have solid, well-muscled bodies. As with other cross-breeds, the Wire-Poo may take more after either parent when it comes to their appearance. On the whole, these dogs have long, rectangular muzzles covered in lovely, curly beards. They have round, brown eyes that are small but piercing. Their skull is flat and their ears sit well-spaced apart on their head. The ears flop down and forwards, lending them a curious expression. They are happiest when around their people and can be especially affectionate in the evenings once most of their energy has been burned off. Their strong prey drive can prove difficult for them to ignore and they will regularly chase smaller animals. As with other breeds, socialising from a very young age is key when it comes to mixing with other family pets successfully. Always on high alert, the Wire-Poo makes an excellent watch dog and will bark loudly long before you have heard a guest arriving. They can be territorial of their home and it can be a challenge to get them to not bark at passers-by and the mailman. We should work on recall training from a young age and consistently throughout their life. Using tasty treats as a reward generally goes down well. However, some may find the allure of a nearby squirrel simply too hard to resist. Health Hardy dogs that typically enjoy good health, the Wire-Poo can suffer from a few health conditions. As many joint diseases can present in a similar manner with signs such as limping, stiffness and muscle atrophy , we often need to x-ray a dog to get a definitive diagnosis. Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea and a reduced appetite may all be seen. Blood tests can diagnose this condition and it is treated with ongoing medication. Epilepsy Epilepsy tends to first develop between the ages of one and five. It is important to rule out other causes of fits such as liver disease or a brain tumour. When epilepsy is confirmed, dogs will usually be managed with lifelong anti-seizure medicine. Exercise and Activity Levels Thanks to its hunting background, the Wire-Poo is not a dog to sit on its backside all day. It can take real effort to keep Wire-Poos entertained and to prevent boredom from setting in. The curls should be brushed through weekly and facial fur does require frequent trimming. A professional grooming is generally needed every few months. User reviews There are no user reviews for this listing. Popular Dog Breeds. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Wire Poo Puppies A post shared by Shelly Swanger Photography shellyswangerphotography Dogs sold at a higher price are generally better-taken care of than those sold at a lower price. Many of these dogs may come with the first round of vaccinations and proof of pedigree lineage. They will usually be tested for hereditary illnesses based on their ancestral breeds. Any prospective pet parents should ensure that their breeder can furnish them with papers proving that genetic testing has been done and the results. A responsible breeder will do their due diligence to test their dogs for hereditary illnesses common in their ancestral breeds. This dog can be outright needy when it comes to affection. He wants to play and cuddle with his favorite people all day long. He may develop separation anxiety if left alone for too long and might become destructive. A Wire Poo is generally pretty easy to train. Are They Good with Children? Wire Poos are also friendly and tolerant for children who are still learning how to interact with dogs. This tolerance is not an excuse to allow your children to mistreat your dog, however. Doing so will protect not just your children but your dog, too. Wire Poos are generally good with other dogs, particularly those larger than themselves. With toy breed dogs, he may feel compelled to chase and hunt them. So, he can be trained to leave his housemates alone. But, his instinctual drives to chase and hunt will always be there. Are They Good with Other Animals? Wire Poos can present a relatively high danger threshold to other animals, small animals especially. Poodles are waterfowl dogs, and Fox Terriers are meant for flushing foxes out of their dens. So, he can pose a threat to even small dogs if not trained correctly. An adult Wire Poo can eat 2. Your Wire Poo will need at least 45 minutes of exercise a day, and it would be best if that exercise were mentally stimulating as well. However, if he takes after his Poodle parent more strongly, he may have a bit of a stubborn streak. Both Poodles and Wirehaired Fox Terriers have low shedding. What kind of grooming your dog needs will depend on which parent he takes after. A Wire Poo who takes after his Poodle parent will need to be professionally groomed to keep his coat in good condition. Wire Poos need to be brushed daily to keep their fur in check outside of professional grooming. However, they can inherit hereditary conditions from both sides of the family, widening the number of illnesses pet parents will need to look out for. Minor Conditions. Remember, it is all going to depend on genetics and chance, and whichever purebred parent your Foodle crossbreed takes after most. If you are able to meet the parents of your potential pup, their coat color can give you an indication of what you might expect in your Fox Terrier Cross Poodle pup. They are known for their spunk and lively spirit, and this little dog is said to be childlike-in-manner with an affinity for play and excitement. Because they are extremely active, they will be more suitable for families with children who are over the age of five. Smaller children could excite this breed, that enjoys playing rambunctiously. They will often chase after youngsters and can sometimes nip out of excitement. While not an aggressive breed, Fox Terriers were bred for hunting and have an incredibly high prey drive. For this reason, they should not be left unsupervised around smaller household pets like cats, rodents, or birds. However, Fox Terriers do well with other household dogs. Though they are rather intelligent, the Fox Terrier does have a tendency to bore easily and can become stubborn if they do not want to do something. Poodle Temperament While the Poodle was also bred for hunting, the Toy Poodle was created to be a family companion. Because they still have a high prey drive, and although they are small, they are likely to chase after smaller animals instinctually. The Toy Poodle is very affectionate and enjoys being around family. However, their small size may not make them suitable for very young children who could accidentally harm them. Despite their proud look and fancy coat, the Poodle enjoys being a dog and loves getting messy! Foodle Temperament Considering the Poodle and the Fox Terrier are both active, intelligent, and fun-loving breeds, you can expect for your Fox Terrier Poodle Cross to share the same traits. This breed has a lot of personality and can be comical at times. They enjoy being around their family and are generally good with older children and other dogs. It is also the reason they should be kept on a leash when out of the house as they may have a strong urge to chase things. And the Foodle could be a bit stubborn, like their Fox Terrier parent, or eager to please, like their Poodle parent. With the Fox Terrier in them, they may wander off and start doing their own thing if they get bored. Furthermore, always use positive reinforcement, as well as the treat-based reward system with this breed. The Fox Terrier side of your pet may not respond well to harsh treatment. As with any dogs, we recommend early socialization and obedience training to reduce anxiety in your Foodle and to better ensure they are adaptable and well-rounded in any setting. Foodle Exercise Requirements Both the Poodle and the Fox Terrier breeds are active dogs that will require a certain amount of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. However, the Foodle is a smaller dog, so a brisk walk, a romp in the yard, or even some play in the home should be enough to meet their exercise needs. Since the Foodle dog comes from a pair of rather brainy breeds, they will need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise to keep them out of trouble. Teaching them new tricks, offering them doggy jobs, or even providing them with some doggy puzzles will help keep them sharp and entertained. Both parent breeds also excel at canine sports and thus your Foodle could too. Foodle Health And Care Determining things like lifespan and what types of health issues they may be prone to can be difficult with a crossbreed such as the Fox Terrier Poodle. For that reason, we recommend looking at the lifespan and any health issues that could potentially come from both the purebred parents. Eye Conditions The Fox Terrier tends to have more eye issues than some other breeds. They are particularly susceptible to cataracts, glaucoma, lens luxation, and distichiasis. Cataracts often affect older dogs and are hallmarked by a cloudy or filmy look to the eye. They can impair vision and may eventually cause blindness. The severity can vary, and more severe cases may be treated with surgery. Glaucoma in dogs is much the same as in humans. The slow deterioration of the optic nerve causes vision loss and potentially blindness if left untreated. It can be painful for your pet as well. Symptoms include redness in the whites of the eyes, a bluish look to the corneas, squinting, and watery eyes. If you notice these signs in your dog it is an emergency and you should visit your vet right away. Primary Lens Luxation PLL is an eye condition that occurs when the fibers that hold the lens in place start to breakdown. The fibers can eventually break and the lens falls out of place. If it falls forward it can interfere with circulation and lead to another optical condition called secondary glaucoma. Treatment is on a case by case basis, but surgery is sometimes needed to remove the fallen lens. Distichiasis is when additional eyelashes grow in the margins of the eyelid. This condition can occur on the upper or lower lids and often occurs in both eyes. It irritates the eye, causing redness, inflammation, discharge, and pain. Distichiasis can also cause ulcers on the eye. Treatment can include removing the extra lashes. Joint Problems Fox Terriers are prone to a couple of joint-related issues: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Both of these conditions cause a deterioration of the affected joint and can lead to arthritis. In the case of elbow dysplasia, a piece of the bone may have broken off and is floating around inside the joint. Symptoms include lameness in the front leg s , stiffness, limping, and external rotation of the paw of the affected leg. Treatment can involve medication, weight management, and exercise limitations. It can also require surgery to remove the bone fragments. In the case of hip dysplasia, the hip socket does not fit together correctly, and consequently, there is a lot of friction and grinding within the joint. Symptoms include lameness in the hind legs, difficulty running, jumping, or climbing stairs, looseness in the joint, decreased range of motion, and a swaying gait. Treatment often involves anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, exercise restrictions, and weight management. It occurs when the kneecap slips out of place. It can vary in severity, occurring occasionally or frequently. The signs of patellar luxation include occasional skipping as the dog runs and hind leg lameness. Treatment can often involve surgery, especially in cases where dislocation occurs frequently. While the condition is not totally understood at this time, it is believed to be caused by decreased blood flow to the hip. This lack of sufficient blood leads to a brittle femur thigh bone which can fracture quite easily. It causes lameness in the back legs and pain. Surgery is often required. Heart Disease Like many breeds, the Fox Terrier is prone to heart disease. In fact, this is the leading cause of death in older Fox Terriers. Heart disease is the result of a weakening or deformation in the heart valves that allow a backflow of blood in the heart. This puts more strain on the heart. Pulmonic Stenosis is another heart condition common to this breed. It is caused by a partial obstruction of the blood flow between the lungs and the heart. Similar to the effect of heart disease, this puts additional strain on the heart. Signs of pulmonic stenosis include difficulty breathing, coughing, and stunted growth. In more severe cases the dog may faint or run out of energy during bouts of exercise. If the condition is severe it is usually treated surgically. Deafness This is a breed that is prone to hereditary deafness. Research has found that this type of deafness is more often found in animals with white pigmentation. It has been found to correlate in other dog breeds as well as other species, like cows, cats, and horses. Despite this list, Fox Terriers are known to be a healthy breed with a long lifespan. And many hereditary conditions can and should be screened for. Be sure to use a breeder that can show you proof of health testing. There are currently no testing schemes for Fox Terriers. This is a degenerative eye disease that leads to blindness. It tends to present anywhere from 3 to 9 years of age and results in total blindness in 1 to 2 years. PRA is not painful, and it is difficult to detect early on. Night vision is affected first, resulting in night blindness. There is currently no cure for this disease. It is a serious condition as these hormones are important for sustaining life. Signs of this condition can include gastrointestinal issues, poor appetite, and lethargy. Their heart function can be affected If the dog becomes stressed, and it can sometimes cause arrhythmias or even heart failure. Testing can be done to confirm a diagnosis. Treatment generally involves daily medication. Sebaceous Adenitis This is a skin condition that results from inflammation in the sebaceous gland that prevents hair from re-growing. Hair texture and color can change, and in some cases, it can lead to alopecia. Signs including crusting on the skin, change in hair texture, and hair loss. Management of the condition can involve topical and oral medication. Seizures Poodles have a higher than average likelihood of suffering from idiopathic seizures. These are seizures of an unknown cause but are believed to be hereditary. Medication is often used to help manage this condition. Black and white Foodle image: Clover the Foxypoo. Have you ever heard of a Foodle? It was until recently that I came across this adorable breed. They are a new breed and given the rise of popularity in Doodles, I think they will soon become very popular as well. A Foodle dog is a hybrid mix between a Fox Terrier and a Poodle. They are small, affectionate dogs with large personalities. They have a great mix of traits and characteristics that they inherit from both of their parent breeds. Fox Terriers are a smaller breed, which means they can breed with a Mini Poodle to create a Foodle. This breed variant is called a Toy Foodle. Foodle Origin Similar to many Doodle breeds , there is little documented evidence as to when the Foodle dog breed was first developed. An estimate from Wag, suggests they originated in the s. Even though accurate records of the origin and history of Foodles are relatively nonexistent, there is a lot of information pertaining to the two parent breeds. Both the Fox Terrier and Poodle have a rich history that spans across hundreds of years. The Fox Terrier dog breed originated in England in the s. They were hunting companions that helped their wealthy English owners on fox hunts. Fox hunts were as much a ceremony as they were a sport. The hunters would gather in regal attire and bring horses, food, and drink out to the field. This serious affair placed a special level of importance on the Fox Terrier. When the fox was spooked by the hunting party, they would run away and hide in their holes. The hunters would then release the Fox Terriers to go and provoke the fox to leave its hole. This often required the dogs to dig around the foxhole which is why Fox Terriers are prone to be diggers. It also accounts for their strong prey drive so be careful letting them off-leash or else they might take off towards a squirrel or other critter. Having lived with Terriers my whole life, I can attest that they are diggers and not great off-leash. Better keep them away from your flower beds! Fox Terriers slowly transitioned out of the fields and into homes. The breed became popular as an everyday, household companion. Fox hunting in England is now illegal. Even so, Fox Terriers remain a popular breed amongst many throughout the world. I encourage you to learn even more about the breed from the interesting video below. The two are virtually one in the same besides the shape of the head and the coat type. The Smooth Fox Terrier is sometimes referred to as a smooth. Smooth Fox Terrier with a white coat and brown markings. The Wire Fox Terrier, or wire, has a less pointed head and a wiry coat. Wire Fox Terrier with a white, brown, and black colored coat. In England, the Fox Terrier breed was treated as two separate breeds. For this article, I will refer to both breeds wire and smooth simply as a Fox Terrier. Poodle Breed History Standard Poodle standing proudly on a rock structure. Poodles have a rich history that dates back more than years ago [4] www. Often mistaken for being France-natives, Poodles originated in Germany. They were bred to be water-fowl hunters and retrievers. This enabled them to evolve as strong, athletic, and intelligent dogs. They have an eagerness to learn and perform specific duties, which means they respond well to training. Many Europeans, especially the French, took a liking to Poodles and the breed began to spread across the continent. Poodles remained as hunting companions but they were also dispersed into other areas such as the circus and at the sides of French nobles. Eventually, the standard-size Poodle was bred down to create the Miniature Poodle. No matter the size, Poodles are a staple breed across the world. A hypoallergenic coat paired with excellent qualities makes them highly sought after by many households. This is also the reason behind the surge of Poodle mixes, or Doodles, that has occurred in recent years. Foodle Appearance Foodles are not large dogs since they are a mix between two small breeds. The Mini Poodle has a curly coat that can come in a variety of colors. Fox Terriers can have either a wiry or smooth coat. Their colors are generally a mix of white, brown, and black. The size mainly is dependent on what size Poodle and Fox Terrier were used for breeding. Toy Fox Terriers have a maximum height of around 12 inches and a maximum weight of 9 pounds. Toy Poodles are shorter with a max height near 10 inches. They range in weight from 4-to 6 pounds. Therefore, a mix between both Toy breeds would produce a Toy Foodle that would be less than 9 pounds and no taller than 12 inches. Coat Their coats can either be thick and curly similar to a Poodle or sleek and fine like a Fox Terrier. The coat could be thick, curly, and wavy — like that of a Mini Poodle — or it can also be thin and smooth — like that of a Fox Terrier. The wiry coat of the Fox Terrier makes the Foodle a part of the wire-haired Doodle family. The Foxypoo can come out as almost any color, from black, brown, tan, gray, white, cream, or, in often cases, a mixture or combinations of these colors. Although the Foodle is small, it has large floppy ears and long skinny legs. It has a broad, robust chest and often looks rather shaggy. A Foodle dog has a long furry tail, big round dark eyes, a small, round sometimes pointed head, and a long muzzle. Traits and Characteristics of the Foodle Dog Breed Fox Terriers are loyal and watchful dogs with a relatively gentle demeanor. They are always on alert and can be heavy barkers, which can be reassuring since you will be alerted if any stranger is near your home. Since Foodles are a newer dog breed, there is not much data on their behavior and personality. As with any breed, each litter and each dog is unique and there is no exact science on how each pup will turn out. However, we can make a good estimate based on breed tendencies. It is an average of the traits between the Mini Poodle and the Fox Terrier. They have a huge personality and, despite their size, will take on any danger head-on — regardless of the size of the challenger. They are incredibly intelligent dogs that assist with training; however, they can be rather stubborn at times thanks to their Terrier side. When not properly stimulated and cared for, they will resort to negative behaviors such as excessive barking and chewing. They do like other animals and can get along very well with them, but the Foodle must be introduced properly to the other animals and pets around the home from an early age to get used to each other. The Foodle also startles quickly and will often bark at noises that are either new or strange to them. They should be exposed to such noises as early as possible to avoid anxiety later in life. They are, by nature, rather energetic dogs and need regular exercise to avoid them resorting to behavioral problems. It is best to keep them on a lead when out and about, as they consider many animals, like squirrels and birds, as prey. White and black, curly-coated Foodle hanging out on the beach image: Gri. They are smart, which makes it a lot easier for training. Positive reinforcement is always recommended when it comes to training any animal. It is important that the dog, from an early age, is exposed to early socialization to be more comfortable and used to outside and strange environments. It is also recommended to crate-train the puppy to avoid separation anxiety when you are not home. Their coats will be dependent on the genetics they pick up the fur could be long and curly like a Poodle or short and sleek like a Fox Terrier, or, often, a combination of the two. It is important to brush the pup several times a week with a slicker brush to avoid the hair from matting. It is advised to bathe the dog every 8 to 12 weeks. The Cost Of A Foodle The price of a Foodle is not too hefty, considering the general price of a designer dog such as a Labradoodle, which reaches well into the thousands. It is not a common breed, so Foodle Foxypoo breeders can be hard to come by. One suggestion would be to reach out to Foodle owners on social media to see where they bought their pups and for how much. There are several public Foxypoo Instagram accounts that would be a good place to start. You can also join a Doodle dog Facebook group and connect with Foodle owners there. This will allow you to ask real Foodle dog owners about their recommended breeders, prices, ownership experience, etc. Be cautious of any shady breeders and avoid puppy mills at all costs! Foodle Dog Diet Requirements Because the Foodle is so small — it does not require a large daily quantity of food like a bigger breed would require. It is recommended to feed Foodles small-sized kibble. It is also recommended to try and stick to smaller-sized, low-calorie treats in training. A well-balanced diet high in nutrients is important to help keep the dog happy and healthy. Little dogs also tend to eat little amounts a few times a day. The Foodle should be fed small amounts 3 to 4 times a day to assist with their speedy little metabolisms. Final Thoughts The Foodle, or Wire Poo, is without a doubt, an adorable creature and would make the perfect new addition to the family. Their larger-than-life personalities almost outweigh their exceptional cuteness. Foxypoos are also rather surprisingly easy to look after — making it well worth considering adopting one of these gorgeous little guys and becoming their new forever home. The perfect new addition to the family, the Foodle is full of love, energy, and affection. With their big dark eyes, big floppy ears, and the bravery of a lion, this little pup is bound to steal your heart. Kevin is a proud Bernedoodle owner and Doodle dog fanatic. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. As such, you may have a female or male with a weight slightly less than the ranges noted. However, provided that is their average weight, and the weight is stable, it is okay. They might be a smaller-sized dog, which is their normal. So, maybe the average weight for your female Golden Retriever is 53 pounds once fully grown; whereas, another owner has a female that is 63 pounds once fully grown. Both are healthy dogs with no underlying medical issues, and both are exercised and fed appropriately. Both dogs are at their normal weights because they were born to be that way. The baseline is one of the main criteria in determining if your Golden Retriever is becoming too skinny. Consider a large adult female Golden Retriever with a breed standard weight of 65 pounds. Notice that 55 pounds still falls within the breed standard or normal range for a female. Keep in mind that just like humans, weight can fluctuate daily and weekly. For example, a two-pound gain or loss might not be a reason to panic, especially if your dog is eating and seems otherwise healthy. It may just be water loss or gain, bowel movement, dehydration, or other normal fluctuations. However, once a Golden Retriever becomes an adult weighing them is not often easy or feasible, or we may be ill-equipped to do so. This is why it is essential to be aware of some of the physical signs of a skinny or underweight dog — it provides another tool as part of the weight management process. Often the first indications we have that our Golden Retriever is too skinny are the physical signs. Often these become the first indications that there is a problem, and we need to contact our veterinarian. Very little or no body fat. Ribs may be visible and easily felt. The curve from waist to hips is excessive and very obvious. This poor guy is grossly underweight too skinny and malnourished. Notice the protruding hip, back, and rib bones, and excessive abdominal taper. A very pronounced taper from waist to hip is one way to tell, and using your hands to feel for protruding ribs, shoulders, and backbones is also helpful. Your veterinarian may ask that you bring your dog in for an examination. Identifying an issue early on ensures you can work with your veterinarian to develop a structured plan to address the problem. Calories in must equal calories out. Your Golden Retriever will lose weight if: Its energy expenditure from daily physical exercise exceeds the intake of calories over a prolonged period. Calorie intake is below the level needed to maintain weight, i. The food is of poor quality. The dog is a finicky eater or fed table scraps, i. A change in environment or stress levels results in a loss of appetite or reduced physical activity, e. Regarding the last point, I wrote an article on common reasons a Golden Retriever might be suddenly lazy or lethargic, and it can be found here: A Lazy Golden Retriever? Do They Exist and Possible Causes. Please take a few minutes to read it as it identifies some reasons why a Golden Retriever may suddenly become less active. On the brighter side, provided any of the above is the cause, then the outlook is excellent. As a first step, a visit to your veterinarian is essential. Your vet will need to rule out any underlying medical problems that may be causing or contributing to the weight loss and determine the best course of treatment moving forward. Provided there are no underlying physical or medical causes; you may be required to do one or more of the following to help your Golden Retriever gain some weight: Change the brand of dog food to a more nutrient-dense one. Increase the amount of food at one or more meals. Decrease the amount of physical exercise. Address stress levels or a change in the environment. The key takeaway is that you should work in consultation with your veterinarian to rule out medical issues and ensure appropriate dietary changes. Then, monitoring and follow-up with your vet until the weight issues are resolved may be required. The most effective ways to ensure your Golden Retriever maintains a healthy weight is to: Feed it healthy, high-quality food. Provide the appropriate amount of food for its normal body weight and activity level. Ensure your dog gets adequate physical activity — not too much and not too little. Most Golden Retrievers are food-driven and enjoy eating. Therefore, if you need to increase the amount of food, it is usually well received by your dog. As well, Goldens are highly active dogs so getting them to exercise is typically not a problem. An inactive dog is usually a byproduct of an inactive owner. Keeping your Golden Retriever at a healthy weight is not all that different from us humans if you think about it. A healthy, well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and keeping our intake of calories the same as our expenditure is pretty much all it takes for us. Apply that same formula to your Golden Retriever and adjust as necessary, and there should be little to no issues keeping it at a healthy weight. Female Golden Retrievers should weigh between 55 and 65 pounds, while males should weigh between 65 and 75 pounds. The ribs, hips, shoulders, and backbone may be apparent and easily felt as physical symptoms. Furthermore, the abdominal taper between the ribs and hips may be severe, with little to no body fat. Bear in mind that each dog has its individual characteristics and body type which gets affected by multiple aspects, so as long as your dog is closer to this range, it is fine, but if you notice a huge difference, this should get your attention. Solution: Ensure the diet you choose is complete and balanced. Choose large, raw, meaty bones. For recipes and recommendations, check out my guide to Golden Retrievers foods and treats for every age here I even included homemade Ice cream, so make sure to check it out. Your dog could also be eating the wrong diet for their age. You can learn when and how to switch your golden to adult food here. Health Issues An underweight Golden Retriever or one that is losing weight too rapidly may be suffering from parasites, diabetes, or thyroid problems. This is especially probable if he has suddenly grown thin and has been exhibiting other symptoms of illness such as tiredness, a lack of desire to eat, or vomiting. Solution: If your dog appears to be unwell or has a medical issue, the best course of action is to take him to a veterinarian. This is more likely if his parents were skinny by nature or if he was reasonably skinny as a puppy if he did not become skinny abruptly, Solution: Pay your vet a visit, and If you have been feeding it the proper quantity and the vet detects no problems, then it goes back to genetics. It would not be a reason for concern in this situation unless your dog has been exhibiting symptoms of health issues. Stress Have you recently started leaving your golden retriever alone for long periods of time? Have you gotten more busy than usual? Have you gotten a new puppy? These can all cause your dog to feel stressed which may cause a lack of appetite and weight loss Solution: take a look at any changes that may have happened recently that could be causing stress to your golden retriever and try to get him used to this new environment. Solution: If you feed your dog dry food, you may want to try topping it with wet or fresh food, and try encouraging your dog to eat whatever there is by not changing food if he refuses to eat. Exercising routine Golden Retrievers normally need a minimum of 1 hour of high-intensity exercise every day to keep them healthy and free of any pent-up energy that may cause them to act aggressively or have a change of behavior. But if your dog is getting too much exercise and not enough nutrients to compensate, then he may lose weight excessively. Solution: the key is balancing between the energy that your dog spends and the intake of food that meets his nutritional needs. Change of Environment Did you move to a new house recently? Did you change parks? Has the staying or sleeping area of your dog changed? How to fatten up your golden retriever There are always methods you can use to make your golden retriever gain a little bit of weight, but make sure you choose the right, healthy track. Here are some tips that will help you fatten up your golden retriever: Feed your dog high-protein food Make sure the amount of exercise matches the amount of food he gets and not exceed it by a mile. If this does not improve, it is advisable to get him examined by a vet to inspect him and determine what is causing this. When to worry and check the vet? The slope from waist to hips is exaggerated and noticeable. These signs are often your red flag to go and see the vet. Related Questions What is the favorite food of golden retrievers? The favorite food of golden retrievers is dry kibble, canned foods, and a mixture of meat and vegetables. When it comes to taste, golden retrievers are huge fans of poultry, kidney, turkey, beef, and salmon. What to do if my golden retriever is underweight? If your golden retriever is underweight make sure he is getting enough food quantity and quality to satisfy all his nutritional needs and promote a healthy lifestyle. Is it normal for a golden retriever to be skinny? It is normal for golden retrievers to be skinny but extremely rare, as they are more prone to be overweight. Some Golden Retriever owners become worried if they notice their dog is skinnier than others of the same breed. The truth is all dogs are different! While your dog may appear skinnier than others, they may be just as healthy; however, it is important to keep watch on their weight! Many influences can cause a Golden Retriever to appear skinny. Some of the most common reasons include injuries, disease, stress, old age, picky eating, etc. A lot of Golden Retrievers are naturally skinny either from genetics or exercise. Goldens are a breed that require a lot of exercise, so it is no surprise that they are a skinnier breed! NOTE: Stress is a major factor in Golden Retriever weight loss, most of the reasons listed above are driven by stress! Injuries, old age, and illness can not only cause weight loss themselves, but the extra stress added on can make the weight loss even more significant. Stress can also be caused by environmental factors such as moving to a new house or going on walks in strange places; this can cause a Golden to become uncomfortable and stressed, leading to weight loss. Thank you, Karen B. How to know if my Golden Retriever is Underweight? There are several ways to see if your Golden Retriever is underweight including keeping track of their weight and checking to see if any bones are showing because of their lack of muscle mass. Another great way to check and see if your Golden is underweight is to look at them from above and from the side. TIP: A vet will typically use a body condition score chart to determine if your Golden Retriever is at a healthy weight or not. A healthy Golden will have soft, shiny, dense fur ; however, when they are underweight, their fur may appear dull, course, sparse, or it may even stop growing completely. Not only are there physical signs to tell if your Golden Retriever is underweight, but they may also have behavioral changes. If your Golden Retriever is losing weight and you are unsure why, there could be more serious issues going on than just their genetics or extensive exercise. Unfortunately, Golden Retrievers are prone to a wide range of health issues, more so than a lot of other breeds. This is why it is sometimes hard to determine what is causing a Golden to lose weight so drastically. One of the most common causes of rapid weight loss in Golden Retrievers is that they have developed worms. Thankfully, this is easily treatable by medication and should go away within a couple of weeks. TIP: Dog foods with probiotics are a good option for dogs who have had parasites! It is usually easy to tell if your Golden Retriever has developed parasites here are some of the most common symptoms: Weight loss. And after that, they stop growing. Does your puppy weight according to this chart? When your puppy weighs more, it might be overweight. But, if it weighs lesser than the above value, it might be skinny. But how to know whether your Golden Retriever puppy is getting skinny or not? Sometimes, the owners fail to notice subtle signs that their puppies are getting skinny. Thus, it seems like they are ignoring their pals. However, if you are parenting a Golden Retriever puppy, neglecting its health can be dangerous. Therefore, look for these signs in your Golden Retriever puppy to know whether it is skinny or not: Are the ribs of your puppy visible? Does it feel like they have ribs just beneath the skin without a layer of fat? Can you feel the hip bones, shoulder bones, and spinal cord of your Golden Retriever with ease like they lie just beneath the skin? Are the bones in the tail of your Golden Retriever puppy protruding? Are the ribs of your puppy too clear? Can you get a clear view of ribs and hips from the top? And does it feel like your pal is hollow without tummy? Further, if your answer to all these questions is yes then, your puppy Golden Retriever is for sure skinny. Read further to get your answer. However, there are many reasons why your Golden Retriever puppy might be skinny. And, those influencing factors are: Genes Some Golden Retriever puppies are naturally skinny. Further, these dogs have a higher metabolism. And thus, they are less likely to gain fat. Besides this, when the parents are skinny, the puppies born inherit their genes. Hence, they become lean and thin. Can you? However, when your Golden Retriever is active and happy despite being skinny. Then, it is natural. Picky Eaters Most Golden Retrievers can eat any and everything. But still, you will find a few dogs nagging about their food. Further, since puppies are new to the environment, they need time to get familiar with the surrounding. So, picky eating is more common in puppies. So, these puppies avoid their food and become skinny. Thus, they prefer peaceful and quieter surroundings. Besides this, when puppies are new to the surrounding, it needs time to settle down. But if their new environment is noisy and disturbing, they may be anxious, uncomfortable, and nervous. So, instead of accepting the surrounding, they suspect everything as a threat. Hence, puppies stop eating, playing, and interacting with people. As a result, a puppy Golden Retriever will be skinny. In addition, extreme environmental conditions like too much hot and too cold might also make a puppy Golden Retriever aggressive and destructive. Thus, it avoids its meal. Sickness Or Injury Owing to the complex genetic makeup, Golden Retrievers are more susceptible to several health issues like cancer , hip dysplasia, joint problems, eye disease , ear infections , allergies, etc. As a consequence of these diseases, the dogs lose their appetite and become skinny. Besides this, puppy Golden Retriever is very playful and active. So, they like to run, play, and jump here and there. Thus, they are prone to injuries. Therefore, due to the immense pain of injures, the puppy loses its appetite. Poor Breeding When your puppy Golden Retriever comes from an abusive breeding environment, it is less likely to have an interest in eating and playing. Since those puppies lost trust in people, they resent everything. Thus, these dogs avoid eating food served to them, assuming it is a threat. Further, these puppies are vulnerable and emotionally unstable. So, they have a lesser urge to eat and are skinny. Too Much Or Too Little Activity Generally, for proper development of bones and joints of a Golden Retriever puppy, it needs at least an hour of exercise daily. So, when your puppy lacks adequate physical training, it might be lazy, inactive, and moody. As a result, it stops eating its food. Thus, intense physical activities might degrade their bones and results in strain and tearing of ligaments. Therefore, your pal will experience immense pain and loses interest in eating. In addition, limping , grunting , frequent barking, and biting are the most common signs that indicate your pal has health issues. Underfeeding Since puppies are in a growing phase, they require more nutrients in their diet. But some owners fail to understand this fact. So, they end up underfeeding their pal. As a result, a Golden Retriever puppy becomes skinny. Thus, low-quality dog food can make your puppy underweight. Furthermore, you cannot use human foods for your puppy. Since your pal cannot digest those foods, it suffers from health issues like constipation , bloating, diarrhea, and skin rashes. Along with this, adult dog foods are low in carbohydrates and proteins. Thus, adult dog foods cannot provide adequate nutrition to your puppy Golden Retriever and make it skin. As humans, it is essential to manage the weight of Golden Retriever. Moreover, a study also says that a healthy Golden Retriever can live more. So, after you find that your puppy Golden Retriever is skinny, you might want to increase its weight. Schedule The Daily Activities When you schedule all the daily activities, you ensure your pal is living a qualitative lifestyle. Further, you can feed, train, and play with your pal at an appropriate time. Thus, it keeps your pal happy and active. Besides this, you can also manage the essential foods and time for serving your pal through the schedule. As a result, your pal will get an adequate amount of nutritious food to gain healthy weight. Hence, your Golden Retriever puppy will get its ideal weight. Thus, you can change your schedule accordingly to help your puppy get an ideal weight. Although, low-quality food might be cost-effective. Besides this, Golden Retriever is an expensive and sophisticated dog. Moreover, qualitative dog foods are high in nutrition and contain the exact number of calories that will help your puppy gain weight. Feed Frequent Small Meals If your Golden Retriever puppy has a small appetite, feeding it frequent small meals can be a good idea. Further, ensure the small meals contain all the essential nutrients for your pal so that it can gain weight. Generally, if you manage the meals properly, your pal tends to eat more through frequent small meals than a single meal. Hence, it is helpful for your skinny Golden Retriever puppy to get some extra pounds. Incorporate More Exercises Exercise and physical activities burn the calories of your dog and make them calorie deficient. Thus, your pal tends to eat more after exercise and training. Besides this, exercise helps in the proper development of the bones and joints of your pal. So, it gives a healthier life to your furry friend. Furthermore, adequate training helps to discipline your pal. Hence, a trained Golden Retriever puppy follows your every command and eats what you offer. As a result, your puppy can gain weight. However, be careful about the intensity of exercise. Since puppies have weaker bones, avoid intense physical workouts. But you can give behavioral training like potty training , bite inhibition training , barking control training , and training to control aggression to your puppy. Use Weight Gain Snacks Since some Golden Retrievers might not find meals appealing, you can entice those dogs to eat using special high-calorie treats. Further, as per professional suggestion, you might even give your pal higher protein and fat-rich food that helps to gain extra pounds. Besides this, some supplements can also help your puppy to get the missing nutrition in its diet. So, try food supplements. Along with this, you can even include healthy natural foods as snacks. Thus, you pal might eat more and gain weight. How are you helping your pal to gain weight? Further, while choosing dog food, make sure that your puppy likes it and is high in nutrition. However, if you are struggling to find the right food for your pal, I will try to narrow down and include the best options below: Natural Foods To Fatten Skinny Golden Retriever Puppy Since Golden Retrievers love their owners , they always search for ways to get closer to their owners. So, the food options that are healthy and easily available in the kitchen are: Lean meats: To increase the calories in your puppy, you can steam, boil, and roast food high in proteins like chicken, turkey, fish, and lean cuts of beef. Sweet potatoes: As cooked skinless sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamin A, they can promote strong nerves, bones, and muscles. Thus, they can be a superfood for your Golden Retriever puppy to gain weight. Peanut butter: Besides being tasty, peanut butter is higher in fats and proteins. Thus, it can help your pal gain extra pounds. Pumpkin: Although pumpkins are cheaper, they are rich in Vitamin A, zinc, and fiber. Besides this, they hydrate your pal. Therefore, pumpkins can be the best food for the health of your puppy. Thus, they are:. Genes The cause of your Golden Retriever being skinny could be that it is genetic. This would be more likely if it was also relatively skinny as a puppy, it has not become skinny suddenly and if the vet has found no issues and you have been feeding it the right amount. In this case, it would not be something to worry about unless it has been showing signs of the cause being due to one of the things mentioned below. Diet The cause could also be that there is a problem with its diet. It could be the case that you have not been feeding it enough or that it has not been getting the right nutrients in its diet. It would help to consult with your vet about its diet and to make sure that you have been feeding it correctly and in the right amounts. You can also look here to see what you should and should not be feeding it. Exercise Golden Retrievers are a breed that is meant to get a lot of exercise on a daily basis so if your Golden Retriever is getting a lot of daily exercise it would likely be a good thing. However, it might be the case that it is not eating the right amount of calories to match it. This would be more likely if it was not skinny as a puppy and it has become skinny since being more active. Again, it would help to make sure that it has been eating the right amount of calories and it would help to ask your vet about it when you next see them. Illness Another possible cause is that it has gotten an illness or disease. This would be more likely if it has become skinny suddenly and if it has been showing other signs of being ill such as fatigue, not wanting to eat or vomiting. If it seems like it might be ill or it might have a medical condition the best option would be to take it to a vet. Stress It could be the case that something has been causing it to be stressed which is what is causing it to lose weight. This would be more likely if your Golden Retriever has started to become skinnier suddenly, if it has been showing other signs of being stressed and if there was recently an event that might have caused it to be stressed such as an owner leaving. Consider whether or not it has always been skinny If your Golden Retriever was not always skinny, it would help to consider what else happened when it first became skinny. If it did become skinny suddenly it would be more likely to be due to things such as illness, anxiety, suddenly being a lot more active without eating more or a sudden change in its diet. It would help to consider what else happened at around the same time that it became skinny. In this case, it would also be important to take it to a vet. Whereas, if it has always been skinny it would make it more likely that it is in its genes to be skinny. How to get your Golden Retriever to be less skinny Below are some things you can do to get your Golden Retriever to be less skinny. By doing so you will be able to get expert advice tailored towards your specific Golden Retriever and to rule out illness or medical causes. Make sure that it is getting the right diet It would also help to make sure that it is getting the right diet by talking to your vet about its diet when you next see them. Make sure that it is eating the right amount for its activity level When feeding your Golden Retriever it is important to consider how active it is. Generally, a Golden Retriever should be getting an hour of exercise per day. It is recommended for sedentary Golden Retrievers to eat between and 1, calories per day and active ones to eat between 1, and 1, calories per day.

The grooming requirements of a Newfoundland cross Labrador is mostly dependent on the coat it acquired — so you can use your better judgment to decide how often you should groom. Here are the recommended products for grooming: Combs and Brushes 1. Fine tooth comb — The fine-tooth comb offers very little resistance on the coat; it works to remove nits from your Newfoundland Lab cross. Greyhound comb — The greyhound comb is a fit choice for line combing your Newfoundland Lab mix as it gets deep down to the skin. It is also useful in removing debris, like burrs and sticks, from the coat. Pin Brush — The most favored brush for daily use, the pin brush is perfect for everyday grooming. It effectively removes knots and tangles from the longer coats of a Newfoundland Lab Mix. The ends of the brush also work to gather dead hair. You can select one from a wide array of products with unique features, in different shapes, sizes, and varieties. Try not to use pin brushes with small plastic balls on the end as they end up snagging on the coat. The 27mm long tines is a good recommendation. Undercoat Rake — An undercoat rake works to de-entangle double coated hybrids like the Newfoundland Lab Mix. This product is usually used when a dog is blowing coat — this is when the winter coat transition to summer coat or vice versa. The length of the tines makes it go deep into the hair and grab out loose fur skins and matting. They are available in the market with a wide selection, ranging from different styles, different teeth lengths, and for different textures and coats. A single row, single length undercoat rake is best for everyday use and the one with double rows, different lengths are excellent for removing the undercoat. Slicker brush — The slicker brush works flawlessly for de-matting as the wire pins move effortlessly through the coat to untangle hair. It is also a wise choice for removing dead hair from the undercoat with the curved ends working to gather dead, lifeless hair. Available in soft and delicate or firm and sturdy pins, slicker brushes also come in different sizes. Mars Coat King — This tool conveniently gets rid of dead hair and undercoat. The chest and pants are heavily coated areas, so the Mars Coat King works for de-bulking wonders. Mat Splitter — You can use this tool to cut up the mats to allow easier combing. They come in several varieties, with sharp blades that can leave behind holes so use it with caution. The single-blade is widely used in Lab Newfoundland mix. Grooming Scissors Thinning shears — With a regular blade on one side and a comb-like one on the other, this is a perfect choice for your Newfoundland and Lab combination. Available in beauty supply stores, they come in a variety of choices and ranges — in price, shape, and size. It is important to note that the lesser set of teeth you use means a choppier cut you can make. A tooth shear makes an exceptional choice for a Newfoundland and Lab cross. Straight shears — The straight shears are ideal for trimming paws and flyaway hairs. It is somewhat sharp and could easily wound the skin. And worse, it could leave a rough and irregular appearance on the body. You can get this at local supply stores, but it can be pretty expensive, be careful when choosing as inexpensive ones may have blades that dull easily. Curved shears — You can use a pair of curved shears to enhance the shape of the ears, paws, and legs. They work flawlessly on the paws or for a belly trim during the warm months. They come in a variety of styles. The blade size depends on what trim you want to achieve. It is always best to introduce the grooming table while your mix is still a young pup to allow time of getting used to it. The tab will keep him in place while grooming session is ongoing. Get one that is adjustable so you can set it in a comfortable height — this will help you maintain a good posture. High-speed dog dryer — This is essential for a Newfoundland and lab cross that is fond of swimming. Drying out your dog will help reduce hot spots because the high-speed dryer thoroughly dries deep into the skin. It can also work to snuff out loose hair and dandruff on a dry coat. And your Lab Newfoundland combination can amass plenty of dandruff, depending on the severity of the condition. Dryers are usually expensive. For your dog friend, A cool dryer with varying airflow adjustments is highly recommended. Some examples are the K9 high-velocity dog dryers and Metro Air Force dryers. It is important to note that you never attempt to use a regular blow dryer on a Lab and Newfoundland combination as it gets extremely hot and it not at all dry their coat. Grooming spray — A grooming spray allows you to brush and comb the hair without any difficulties. There are so many grooming sprays to choose from, and it can be particularly hard to pick one that would work for your cross between Newfoundland and Lab. You can start by selecting a scent that you like. Tackle Box — What better way to store and organize all your dog-grooming tools than to use a Tacklebox? You can place your combs and scissors on the top compartment and your brushes and grooming spray on the underneath. If you decide to accommodate all grooming care, it can be a great bonding experience for you both. Starting your dog young is a sure-fire hit. Ultimately, grooming tools are dependent on your personal preference. You may follow a certain standard, but it all comes down to what works best for you and what you can afford. It is vital that we can identify the symptoms so we can take action. Here are some of the most common illnesses of a Lab Newfoundland cross: Subvalvular aortic stenosis — a heart disease that affects the valves Gastric dilatation volvulus or gastric torsion — bloat or twisted stomach Hip and elbow dysplasia — the hip and elbow joints do not fit or develop accordingly, causing them to rub and grind instead of gliding smoothly Epilepsy — neurological disorder defined by intermittent seizures Cataracts — the lens loses transparency, may impair vision or even cause blindness Ruptured cranial cruciate ligament — ruptures occur in the mid ligament hind legs and is linked with progressive fatigue Cancer — such as mammary cancers, lymphoma, leukemia, osteosarcomas, mast cell tumors, and skin cancers Chronic allergies — can be food, skin or environmental allergy Remember that even the most appropriate health screening does not guarantee a healthy Newfoundland and Lab combination. Lab and Newfoundland Mix Food Requirements The best food choice for a big dog like your Lab and Newfoundland Cross should be rich in protein like fish or meat and carbohydrates which you can get from whole grains, peas, and beans. They have incredibly high energy, so they need sufficient amount of calories to restore what they have burned, For seniors, it is important to serve them with food rich in glucosamine and chondroitin for joint mobility and repair and DHA found in seaweed oil for proper brain and vision function. For your puppies, food should be hypoallergenic, rich in calcium for strong bones and teeth, and omega 6 and 3 essential for healthy skin and coat. How much you feed them is dependent on their age and activity levels. Here are some examples you can try: 1. It features real, deboned beef, along with sweet potatoes, peas, apples, blueberries and more. With chicken as the main ingredient, it also uses improved botanical oils that are an efficient and effective fuel source. Wild Calling! That is why you should never give them the worst dry dog food, and only choose the best dry dog food for your fuzzy friend. If your furry baby is still just a munchkin, we have a list of the best puppy food brands that they will chow down on in seconds. In case you have a wise, silver-coated senior in your home, give them only the best senior dry dog food to keep them sprightly even past their prime. Never forget that your crossbred charmer carries the genes of their vastly different and unique parents. So, try giving them more variety in their bowls — they may like these best dry dog food for small dogs or have a taste for these best large breed dry dog food instead. The point is that you can never know! Newfoundland and Labrador Cross Exercise Requirements Routinary walks and regular visits to the dog park are great opportunities for your Lab Newfoundland mix to get sufficient exercise. Make sure your dog gets at least sixty to ninety minutes of vigorous activity each day, every day. They are huge and naturally tend to become obese if they do not engage in physical activities often. To make the routines more fun and enjoyable, take a look at these tools: Agility Equipment — This is a superb choice if your dog is fond of running, climbing and jumping. Bar jumps, tire jumps or weave poles are some examples. Lure Coursing — This is a splendid choice if you have a pet with undeniably strong prey nature. This equipment creates a mechanical lure which is then pursued by your dog. An example is the Injoy Lure Coursing. Newfoundland and Lab Mix Training Whether your aim is for socialization or participation in sports, training holds the key to a more confident and comfortable Newfoundland Lab cross. Check out these Sports activities that you can train for: 1. Companion Events — This sport aims to show the deep connection shared between you and your dog. Events like agility, obedience, and tracking, will demonstrate the teamwork between the owner and a well-trained dog. Lab and Newfoundland Mix and Families The Labrador Newfoundland Mix is a fantastic family pet who loves the company of people, especially children. Newfoundland Mixes are very friendly dogs, known to be affectionate with both its own family as well as other dogs and children. Their gentle nature often makes them friendly towards strangers, which makes them a great pup to take to the local park. While their fur makes them great at handling colder weather, it does give them a hard time in warmer climates. Newfie Mixes can be prone to the same health issues as both parent breeds. On the Newfoundland side, this means that they are typically a moderately healthy breed, but do have their own set of risks involved typical to the large and giant dog breeds. They are known to have issues, especially later in life, concerning their joints and eyes. Talking to the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents is a great way to find out what to expect with your Newfoundland Mix. Considered very easy to train and highly intelligent, a Newfoundland Mix is a great dog for anyone who has had experience training a pup before. Because of their large size and thick coat, a Newfoundland Mix will shed a significant amount. To counteract this, they require regular grooming. Daily brushing also goes a long way in cutting down on shedding, removing tangles to prevent mats, and helping your pup be more comfortable. Their flat, water-resistant double coat tends to mat, but is extremely useful in inclement weather. But, droopy ears are more prone to ear infections because they tend to trap dirt and moisture more often than ears that stick straight up. Dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay are one of the most common health issues in dogs. Vet-approved dental hygiene chews or treats and a special dental care diet can help supplement your efforts. These Newfie Mixes tend to have moderate energy levels that require regular play or walks, but nothing overly rigorous. They tend to be very playful though, and love to chase when they play. A Newfoundland Mix typically tends to be between 24 and 27 inches at their shoulder. This may shift slightly depending on the other breed involved in the mix. This dog breed typically lives up to 10 years. Featured Newfoundland Mix Article. Showing 1 - 12 of 12 resultsPage 1 - 12 results Sort by Your listing deserves to be on top. One other reason that puppy parents trust Keystone Puppies when looking for Mini Goldendoodles for sale is that we make dog health our top priority! Because they are bred to have the coat qualities of a Poodle, these pups are a popular option for owners looking to adopt a hypoallergenic dog. Their curly coat should be soft to the touch. The signature coat of pretty curls is one of the places where the Poodle ancestry truly shines through. To keep the coat looking its most beautiful, make sure to brush it two to four times per week. Not only is brushing a nice bonding experience for the pup and their person, but it also prevents tangling and matting. Owners can maintain a healthy Goldendoodle coat by bathing them every other month. Meet Mini Goldendoodles for Sale. As a result, they do not make good guard dogs and sometimes get separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. Affectionate: Even though they are friendly to strangers, Mini Goldendoodles still have a special bond with their owners. They quickly become attached to people they spend a lot of time with, and they never tire of being with their owners and family. Small Size: Mini Goldendoodles are a smaller size and weight which makes them better suited for apartments and small homes. Sociable: Mini Goldendoodles love spending time with humans, and they play well with the family and children. No matter what the family is doing, Mini Goldendoodles want to be a part of the action! Trainable: With their friendly temperament and intelligence, Mini Goldendoodles are one of the easier breeds to train. They respond well to training that is done consistently and properly, and they soon become accustomed to house rules and expectations. Adaptable: Mini Goldendoodles can adapt well to different living environments, including apartments or houses with yards. However, they still require regular exercise and mental enrichment to thrive. They are quick learners and can excel in obedience training and various dog sports. In the mids, breeders began crossing Poodles with several breeds, the most popular being Labrador Retrievers and Cocker Spaniel. The resulting breeds, known as Labradoodles and Cockapoos, became popular in the United States, and especially among families. As a result, Golden Retrievers were bred with miniature and toy Poodles in the late s to create the Mini Goldendoodle breed. Mini Goldendoodles are still a relatively young breed, and many today are first-generation Mini Goldendoodles. As a result, the breed is not recognized by any major breed registry. While Mini Goldendoodles vary in size based on the size of the Poodle used, Mini Goldendoodles are an average inches in height at the shoulder and weigh pounds. Most Mini Goldendoodles live years. Because it is a hybrid breed, the exact coat markings and features do vary from puppy to puppy. However, most Mini Goldendoodles do favor the Poodle side of the breed and will often have the curlier, shorter hair of the Poodle. Even though they favor the coat of a Poodle, Mini Goldendoodles still require regular care and grooming. Their coats and skin usually create natural body oils, and this results in regular baths not being required unless the body is unnaturally dirty. Because they are still a young breed, not much is known specifically about the overall health of the Mini Goldendoodle breed. However, there are no known health risks, and if you choose a reputable breeder, your Mini Goldendoodle puppy should not have any significant health issues. Because of their long, floppy ears, it is also important to regularly check the ears for signs of infection. Whenever your Mini Goldendoodle gets wet, make sure the hair inside the ears completely dries out. Like all dogs, Mini Goldendoodles are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia. Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or lameness if not addressed. One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from excessive running on hard surfaces. This is especially vital when they are a puppy. While Mini Goldendoodles are popular for being more hypoallergenic than Golden Retrievers, it does not mean they are entirely allergen-free. Allergens are caused by dander, which is dead skin cells. These skin cells are shed by any animal, including humans. Mini Goldendoodles will typically shed less than standard Golden Retrievers, but this does not eliminate dander or allergens. If you have a family member with allergen concerns, it is always good to consult with your family physician. A Standard Goldendoodle weighs lbs, whereas a Mini Goldendoodles weighs lbs. There are also Medium Goldendoodles, which are in between Standard and Min. Is there such a thing as a Toy Goldendoodle? Toy Goldendoodles are just really small Mini Goldendoodles and weigh 20 lbs or less. There are also Teacup Goldendoodles, which weigh less than 13 lbs. Are Mini Goldendoodles nicer than Standard Goldendoodles? However, their small size makes Mini Goldendoodles more manageable for many families, especially those with small children. Are Goldendoodles recognized by any major breed industry? Since Goldendoodles are a mixed and relatively new breed, they are not recognized by any major breed industry. Mini Goldendoodles are occasional barkers, but not incessant yappers. They will warn you if someone is at the door, though. Do Mini Goldendoodles have an odor? Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Before searching for "Mini Goldendoodles near me," it's important that you make sure it's a good match. As always, practicing responsible dog ownership is crucial before committing to a Mini Goldendoodle for sale. Let's examine the Mini Goldendoodle's characteristics, behaviors, training, and grooming requirements to determine whether this is the right dog for you. Characteristics The standard lifespan of a Mini Goldendoodle ranges from twelve to sixteen years. The popularity of this breed stems not only from its low-shedding characteristics translation: low-maintenance and less vacuuming! These dogs are typically a lovely golden blond and it's not uncommon to find streaks of white on the head and chest. You can find a Mini Goldendoodle for sale in darker colors as well, like caramel, dark brown, and black. Incredibly cute and always friendly, a Mini Goldendoodle is an excellent choice for any household. Activity Level Looking for mini doodles for sale will mean committing to a moderately active lifestyle. Don't let this dog's small size fool you — it will follow your every move! If you purchase a Mini Goldendoodle for sale, you will have a constant companion that loves to play fetch, be chased, or just run when those zoomies hit. Expect to dedicate at least an hour of exercise for this dog daily. Since their breeding originates from two water dog breeds, Mini Goldendoodles enjoy the water, so taking them to the pool, lake, or beach will always be a hit. Disposition Opting for Mini Goldendoodles for sale is the perfect choice if you're looking for a sweet, mild-mannered, social pup. These dogs are people-oriented, love attention, and seek a lot of interaction from their owners. Get ready for lots of cuddling — they'll do anything for a belly rub! Miniature Goldendoodles are also great additions to homes that already have pets. These dogs love the companionship of other dogs as much as humans. When properly socialized from a young age, Mini Goldendoodles can even be taught to get along with cats! Training Miniature Goldendoodles are highly trainable thanks to their intelligence and desire to please. It is not uncommon for them to master new commands in just a few sessions assuming you have enough treats on hand. The main challenge of training these dogs is that they are high-energy, easily excitable, and struggle to focus for long. Maintaining short training sessions will help your dog to reach its full potential. Positive reinforcement training is by far the most effective training method for ensuring your dog is disciplined and well-behaved. Grooming Requirements As a poodle mix, this breed requires a little more hair care than most other dogs. While they're famous for low-shedding, that doesn't mean their coat doesn't need maintenance. Regularly brushing your pup's curls is essential for preventing their fur from becoming tangled and matted. It's best to brush your dog at least three times per week using a metal pin brush. The Mini Goldendoodle also has fast-growing fur. For this reason, consider taking the dog to a professional groomer every two to three months. The work of a professional also makes home grooming far less taxing. These dogs tend not to have that distinct "doggy odor" native to other breeds. However, just because your Mini Goldendoodle doesn't smell doesn't mean it doesn't need a bath. You should still regularly bathe your dog to avoid bacteria buildup and infections, and don't forget to check those ears. Why Pawrade? You want to choose one carefully as their breeding practices will have an impact on the temperament and health of your Mini Goldendoodle puppy. Start by looking at online sources such as Google reviews, online forums, discussion groups and social media platforms to see what other people are saying about the breeder. Did they have a good experience buying from them? To take your research a bit further, you can ask Goldendoodle organizations and clubs based in your area about their opinion of the breeder you are considering to purchase from. Many Goldendoodle clubs also have their own lists of responsible breeders so they can give you additional recommendations for good Mini Goldendoodle breeders. You may also consider visiting some dog shows and events as they are a good opportunity to meet breeders in person and see their Mini Goldendoodles. You can also ask other dog owners that are showing their Mini Goldendoodles for breeder recommendations. Finally, ask potential breeders for references and consider contacting these people to ask about their experience with the breeder. Reputable breeders always prioritize the well-being of their dogs and strive for positive reviews. You should inquire about temperament and health of the Mini Goldendoodles these people purchased. Use this information to make an informed decision. All reputable Mini Goldendoodle breeders conduct them on their breeding dogs — whether they are breeding from purebred Golden Retrievers for F1 Goldendoodles and Poodles or from Goldendoodles for later generations like F2 Goldendoodles. A stipulates the health testing requirements for Goldendoodles and if the breeder is registered with G. A, you know that the breeding dogs have undergone full health testing. A heart clearance O. Ask to see documentation of these clearances before purchasing from a Mini Goldendoodle breeder. All responsible breeders should be willing to provide any health documentation. They should also be happy to answer any questions you have about their breeding program. However, if you have the opportunity to check out the facilities you should do it. Check that the kennels are clean, that they dogs and puppies have access to fresh water and also that there is not a build up of feces or urine. Comfortable living conditions: The breeder should keep their Mini Goldendoodles, Golden Retrievers and Poodles in comfortable living conditions. They should have large, comfortable kennels or dog beds and also have a decent amount of space to exercise and socialize with other dogs. Healthy breeding dogs and puppies: If you get the opportunity to meet the parents of the Mini Goldendoodle litter you are interested in, make sure they are well-tempered and also healthy. Sometimes the mother will be quite protective of her puppies so she may show signs of aggression. If you are purchasing a puppy online and getting it delivered, ask if the breeder would be happy to video call you or send videos of their Mini Goldendoodle puppies and breeding dogs to you. Ask About Socialization Mini Goldendoodle breeders should begin the socialization process before their puppies are sold. The puppies should be exposed to a wide variety of sounds, experiences, people and places so they can adjust to their new homes and adult life. Nevertheless, they should start exposing them to sounds like household appliances, provide mental stimulation with toys and games and also encourage playtime and interactions with their littermates and family. The most common ones are: Lack of registration: If a Mini Goldendoodle breeder cannot provide registration papers or other relevant documentation, it may be a sign that they are not operating a reputable breeding program. Overbreeding: Think twice about purchasing from a Mini Goldendoodle breeder who always has puppies available or offers an excessive amount of dog breeds. This may suggest that the breeder is overly focused on profit instead of the health and wellbeing of their puppies. Lack of health checks: A reputable Mini Goldendoodle breeder will conduct health clearances on their breeding dogs to ensure they are free of genetic health issues that could be passed on. If a breeder cannot provide documentation of these health checks, it may be a sign that they are not prioritizing health. Further Reading.
