The affable and adorable Australian Labradoodle dog is known not only for its personality and trainability, but especially for its coat, which can be easy to keep clean and sheds far less than other dogs. Most people know that the Australian Labradoodles hardly ever shed. That means your house cleaning routine just got easier, and the likelihood that you or your family will react to dog allergens is significantly reduced. You have two options: First, you can purchase a puppy to raise with your family. Of course, you can rescue a Doodle for less. The only problem is that the rescue may come with a host of issues you are not ready or willing to deal with, including everything from physical challenges to questionable emotional stability. How big were they? How healthy will your dog be? What kind of coats did they have? What kind of coat will your dog have? Will the dog shed? Before you start calling breeders and purchase the first brown-eyed pup you find, you should know that not all Labradoodles are created equal. First, there are two types of Labradoodle — the American Labradoodle, which is considered a hybrid dog, and the Australian Labradoodle, which is considered a purebred. Our focus is on the purebred Doodle, the Australian Labradoodle. The purebred Labradoodle from Australia is a cross between a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Standard Poodle. Do you really need to understand the different generations of Australian Labradoodles? The resulting litter is expected to have the best characteristics of both parents, including better health. This generation of pups, however, could still present with health issues specific to their parents. Like the Standard Poodles and Labrador Retrievers, your puppy could develop hip dysplasia as it grows older. It could also have some of the eye problems Poodles are known for. Conscientious breeders are aware of these possible challenges, and so they health test their dogs to make sure they are not perpetuating physical weaknesses; breeders want to produce the healthiest offspring possible. The characteristic that makes Labradoodles desirable is their coats. Some offspring may look more like the Labrador Retriever, with hairlike coats, and some may be more similar to the Poodle, with tight curls. Pups from the F1 Generation are not recommended for people wanting a dog with fewer allergens and less shedding. The F1 Generation pups are most low maintenance Labradoodles. Other than that, grooming your F1 Labradoodle is simple and easy. That means that an F1 dog has been bred to a purebred dog, either a Labrador Retriever or a Poodle. The purpose behind backcross breeding is to enhance the characteristics of one purebred dog or the other. Breeders aim for the hypoallergenic wool and fleece coats. This is more similar to the coat for which Poodles are known. Theses dogs shed minimally, produce little dander, and make great canine companions. In the F2 Generation, your pup could have any type of coat — fleece, wool or hair, and it could be straight, wavy or curly. Unfortunately, you may experience more shedding than you had hoped for, so the way to correct this deficiency is through crossback breeding once again. The F2B dog that has been mated to a Poodle will have the soft, curly coat so coveted by Australian Labradoodle owners. This coat, which will be fleece or wool, is much softer to the touch, and it feels thicker, too. As you might expect, these dogs share equal parts of Labrador Retriever and Poodle. The offspring of these matings is the famed F3B Generation that saavy breeders and owners look for. These are the nearly hypoallergenic dogs that pet lovers adore. The most common choice for backcrossing is the Poodle, obviously for its coat. The dogs are rarely crossed back to a Labrador Retriever. These multigenerational dogs develop great coats of curly fleece. They shed very little, and they are perfect for those people who have allergies. Breeding beyond the F3B produces multi-generational litters of puppies , and these dogs are highly coveted because of their consistency in health, form and coat. They always look predictably like their parents. Opt for a dog from the F3B Generation, and you have less chance of having a throwback pup, which means a dog that looks more like its original purebred parent from several generations ago than the cute and hypoallergenic Labradoodle you were hoping for. Dogs from the F3B Generation will cost more, but in return, you get a designer dog that will be healthy and as hypoallergenic as a dog can be. The multi-generational Australian Labradoodle will be the smart family companion that will be funny, lovable, easy to train — just the kind of canine companion kids should grow up with. Are F1 Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? Yes, F1 Labradoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic. That being said, there are other generations of Labradoodle that are more hypoallergenic than the F1 generation e. Very curly coats are generally seen in cross back generations such as F1b or F1bb Labradoodles as they have a higher percentage of Poodle genes. F1 Chocolate Labradoodle F1 Chocolate Labradoodles feature a solid brown coat that can range from a very light to a rich brown tone. Their noses and eyes are brown. They have black or brown noses and dark colored eyes. F1 White Labradoodles are also known as Chalk Labradoodles as their coat color is a very similar shade to chalk. Loves to chase his tail and pesky flies, he is a soft-at-heart pup who has a Big character. A change in our circumstances unfortunately means we are unable to keep him although we would most dearly love to. A loving home for him is needed. He was a stud dog from a puppy farm. He was lucky as he was handed over to a rescue - most aren't they are either shot or hit over the head. Daisy was 4. She lived her life as a tool to make money from. She never knew a home, a special family or a fireside. She had litter after litter, but when her weight dropped, her breathing was laboured, she could have no more pups, she was given to a rescue to home. It was decided immediately that she must see the vet. She sat in the waiting room for her turn to come and was cuddled, probably for the first time in her short life. She went into the vets' room, he listened to her heart, it was laboured, her belly swollen with fluid, all too far gone for help. She sat not able to stand any longer, the decision was made, she gave her paw while being cuddled. The vet nurse found the vein and the vet injected the yellow fluid to send her to sleep forever. Her living hell was over, we can only hope that a better place awaits her. For those people who paid hundreds of pounds for her puppies, they will probably have inherited the same heart condition from their mother and will live very short lives!! This one proved useless for breeding so was dispensed with. She would only crawl on her belly to start with, but now waggy and confident and so gentle. Rotty bitch gone past her sell by date so she was thrown out on the street by the breeder - thin, little coat and eyes that wept with pus. She has now had a successful eye operation that was done to restore her vision and stop the constant infection where her eyelashes grew in and rubbed relentlessly on her eyes. Her hair has grown back, and her loving nature is coming though. Worn out useless boxer unable to raise a litter as no desire to keep on living. This Labrador is just 18 months old though he looks .Poor dog didn't make the grade as a stud dog. He is blind in one eye because the breeders left an ulcer in his eye untreated which burst. He is with kind people who are trying to help him forget the last 18 mths but he is still very traumatised. Time may be a great healer but it won't give him his eyesight back. Some of the saddest dogs are the x puppy farm stud dogs. They have never known the kindness of a home or been for a walk, they do not even have the pleasure of the company of other dogs but live a life of isolation -scared of almost everything. This mastiff has had a rotten life and he will not be easy to rehome as he is so large. Breeding bitches, worn out bodies, no muscle tone and many with large mammary tumours. Living in dirty cells with up to 20 others, no human company or kindness, no playtime or long walks. Many have never seen the light of day. Puppies past their cute stage so dealers won't buy them - what will be their fate?!!!! If you buy a puppy from a dealer or a puppy farm, you may be making a very expensive mistake not to mention encouraging these people to breed more sick, unhealthy puppies. Think of the suffering of these poor helpless dogs. Ahh - the cute little puppy that was advertised for sale in the paper. The implications of not buying from a reputable breeder This is Minnie one of the hundreds of german shepherd puppies for sale in the UK who is just 10 months old and since just a few months old has suffered from severe hip dysplasia which has caused her pain, discomfort and disability. Although a little sweetheart, Minnie is not a great example of the German Shepherd breed being very small and underweight as well as having health problems. She has recently undergone surgery to correct problems with her left hip and at some point in the future, she may require total hip replacement on the right side. Puppies for sale! Think very carefully before deciding to buy that puppy. Why not consider taking a rescue dog instead, most rescues in the UK are full and desperate for kind loving homes. Hundreds of dogs are destroyed every week by the dog pounds because enough homes cannot be found for the increasing number of unwanted and unloved dogs. Much kinder for dogs than encouraging or lining the pockets of those who breed dogs for money with no thought to what they are breeding and little regard to the pain and suffering caused as a result of their greed. If there is no demand, the puppy farmers and irresponsible breeders will be put out of business. If you decide that you would prefer to buy a puppy please note that we are not prepared to recommend breeders but we would give the following advice. The kennel Club will give you a list of breeders on request. However this will not be an indication that these are reputable breeders, it will just be a list of breeders that register puppies with the KC. You should at least be able to see the mother of the puppies. Please note that the conditions in these puppy farms are horrendous with dogs kept in appalling conditions, some never seeing the light of day. Please do not encourage this trade. Parents of the puppies should be hip scored. Reputable breeders will breed with consideration not only for looks but also for good health but most importantly good temperament. When you get your puppy, remember that the German Shepherd is a working breed and will require training and socialisation. It will pay dividends later if you find a good training class for your new puppy. Insure your puppy, veterinary treatment is very expensive. This is usually located almost at the center of the belly, just below the rib cage. Once the umbilical cord shrivels and falls off -- which should happen within a few days -- there will be a little scar left behind on the belly. This scar is a slightly brighter color than the surrounding skin and feels a little bit thicker. The prepuce will have a small hole at the center. Male puppies will have testicles, although you may not be able to feel them before they are 8 weeks old. By 8 weeks old, the testicles are usually enclosed in the sack-like scrotum. Unlike male puppies, female puppies will have smooth bellies other than their umbilicus scar. Females do not have a prepuce. If your puppy is male, you will only be able to see its anus. If your puppy is female, you will see a raised, fleshy area just under the anus. This is the vulva. The vulva of a female puppy is small and leaf-shaped. It has a vertical slit. The vulva may have some wispy hairs on it. Just like humans and other mammals, both male and female dogs have nipples. Puppies should have their first set of vaccinations at around six weeks old. Although both are loyal , protective, and friendly, there are some other areas you should be aware of with this breed. He is a very protective pup over his family, and he can test the boundaries of the dominant position in the household. Males need to be trained and brought up from puppies with a firm yet kind hand. If not, he will run roughshod over your home, and he will not respect or respond to commands. Your GSD boy, although loving and protective, is more likely to attach himself to one person in the family. This is usually the one who has asserted themselves as the dominant leader, and the person who feeds and spends the most quality time with them. The male GSD can be more aggressive and proud than females. They are very territorial and possessive of their owners. Although they are good family dogs, males can push around kids and be a little rambunctious. That being said, they are still loyal and protective of kids and will act as a babysitter if they feel the children are up to no good. Female personality Unlike the male, a girl GSD is more gentle and friendly, in general. She is also more apt to be protective and attached to the entire family versus just one person. As her nature is typically more laid back, your German Shepherd is also not going to be as hard to handle as the male counterparts. Besides dominance, a female is easier to train and can tolerate other dogs and people more easily. Although still fiercely protective, she is not as possessive and will not mark her territory like the male. Overall, your GSD girl is sweeter. They are not aggressive unless protecting their families. Also, the female can have some coolness to her nature, but that is typically determined by the individual pooch. Training and Care The training and overall care of these dogs require a solid commitment from their owners. They are active, playful, and intelligent animals that need stimulation to be happy and healthy. Male and female German Shepherds need daily moderate to high activity or they can become unruly. If the excess energy is allowed to build up, they can bark, chew, pace, and generally find ways to show their displeasure. With that being said, a male GSD is more likely to be destructive when not properly exercised. They have less tolerance for being left alone, although both sexes do not do well with an extended absence from the family. Also, as the male tends to bond with one family member, they can become more agitated when that person is gone for longer periods, even if the other family members are present. That being said, the male German Shepherd is harder to train, as they will compete for the dominant position. A young start and a firm hand are required. On one hand, the GSD boy pup is more likely to be used as a guard dog, watchdog, or protector. They are also trained in activities such as herding , police support, and guides for the disabled. Overall, they will take longer to train, yet once it is done, they are very obedient. Girls, on the other hand, are much easier to train. Their calm and cool temperament allows them to focus their intelligence on the sequence that will make you happy without needing to focus on pushing for dominance. Although girls are not used as guard dogs or police dogs as often, they are still capable of these activities. That being said, the female GSD is a favorite for agility contests, sporting events, and even babysitting the kids. Their fur can differ in color, texture, and length, but overall, they have a thick, double coat with soft and shiny fur that will need to be brushed a few times a week. Brushing is not only important to keep their coats healthy , but it will reduce the amount of shedding. Also, neither gender is a fan of bathtime, nor is it recommended. Unless they have become filthy, bathing will strip the oils from their fur, so it is not the best idea. Diet The last consideration in this area is food and diet. Both males and females should be fed a healthy and nutritious diet twice a day. You should note, however, that males are larger than females, and will require more food. They can range from several different colors, have different fur lengths, and can have different features. Overall, however, the male GSD is going to be a good deal larger than the female. They also tend to be more lean and lanky, although both genders are typically taller pups. Your male pooch can range in height from 24 to 28 inches and weigh anywhere from 75 to 95 pounds. Females are lighter and smaller than their male halves. They can also be broader in stature. A female GSD will range in height from 23 to 26 inches. Interestingly, though, their weight range is the same as males, so they can reach up to 95 pounds. Health Common canine health concerns will affect the male and female GSD equally. Both genders should have regular vet visits to make sure they are kept in good health. They should also have their teeth checked regularly for signs of excess plaque and tartar build-up. Beyond that, both sexes have their own health concerns, plus they share some that are more common to their breed. Not doing so can also affect their personality traits and cause them to be moodier. Here are some illness and issues you should be aware of with a GSD female: Mammary cancer. Though male and female GSDs have similarities, they also have relevant differences. However, they also have differences based on their gender. Male GSDs generally dominate because of their large and masculine features. If territorial marking is a problem to you, consider spaying your male GSDs because they mark their territory less when spayed. To control unwanted behaviors, train your GSD at a young age to prevent problems. On the other hand, female GSDs are less possessive of their belongings and they get along well with their handlers and people in general so they tend to be more protective of them. However, female GSDs can become too dependent which could result in jealousy. For a female GSD, she bonds not only to her handler but also to other family members and even tolerates outsiders. Training Differences Since male GSDs are proud, it can be more challenging to train them than their female counterparts. Female GSDs are more sensitive and more focused so they excel in agility training because they are faster and smaller. Size A male GSD is taller, bigger and heavier. He has a larger head and a broader body while a female GSD is noticeably smaller and lighter. If you happen to see larger females and smaller males, these are exceptions. These numbers are not absolutes. What Should You Choose? It depends on your preference. Inform the breeder of the specific characteristics you are looking for. Be clear of your purpose in buying a GSD so the breeder can give possible suggestions. If it is feasible, observe male and females GSD puppies together. When female GSDs are in heat, they will bleed for a week or more. This happens only twice a year but it can be messy. So if you are inexperienced, it could be difficult. As an alternative, you can choose to get a male GSD. Most experts agree that female GSDs are ideal for a family with children so if you have children, get a female GSD since she is more nurturing and gentle. Keep in mind though that a male GSD needs more food compared with a female one. You also have to consider how the GSD was raised and trained. Remember that an untrained GSD regardless of gender can become aggressive. Try not to focus too much on gender because their characteristics depend on their breed not just on their gender. Conclusion Whatever you choose, be open-minded when your expectations are not met. Many GSDs are abandoned or put up for adoption because of high expectations from their previous owners.
