Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. These dogs were said to be a modernized version of the breeds indigenous to the Deep South region of the United States used as plantation dogs. Though they possessed several versions, the common factor in all of them was its muscular built, strength powerful jaws and versatile temperament as it would be ready to confront an intruder and at the same time obediently following their master. However, post the American Civil War because of a changed lifestyle in people, the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog was almost on the verge of extinction but for the efforts of Buck Lane, a farmer, living the Rebecca region who tried reviving it again. In fact, he had a loyal and devoted guard dog named Otto which went on to become the representative of the second generation of this breed. Temperament They are loyal, obedient, dutiful and extremely protective of their family hence making for good companion dogs. They also share a good rapport with the children of the family, emerging as their perfect playmate. However, there is an entirely different side to their character. This attitude might, therefore, make them reserved and wary towards an unfamiliar face, getting them onto an aggressive and dangerous mood the moment they sense a threat. They also have a territorial nature alongside chasing instincts which do not make them get along well with dogs or other pets unless brought up with them. Care Exercise Though bred as working dogs, they have moderate exercise need, sufficing with a daily walk. They adjust well to an apartment life if their exercise needs are met. However, as they are not at all active indoors, an enclosed yard would be good enough for them to romp or chase around. Grooming These dogs have low grooming requirements because of their short coat that needs to be brushed once or twice a week with a bristle brush. Other hygiene measures include cleaning its ears regularly using wet cotton balls to ward off any infections, trimming its nails as well as brushing its teeth to keep dental problems at bay. Health Problems Though they are a healthy breed, some of the common problems that the Otto may suffer from include hip dysplasia, entropion a condition of the eyes where the eyelids fold inward as well as congenital deafness. Training Because of their strong guarding instincts and high prey drive, the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog needs to go through proper training. Rather than first-timers, they would be apt for experienced owners who can handle these intelligent dogs in a firm, tactful and patient way. Socialization training is essential keeping their territorial and protective nature in mind. Acquaint your dog with people who frequent your house since his puppy days and try establishing a cordial relationship between them. However, even after you have socialized your pet, it is essential to keep close supervision when they are interacting with guests as they may break into something unpredictable you had not expected. Leash train your pet keeping its mind its drive for prey. Feeding Feed the Otto four to five cups of high-quality dog food dry on a daily basis alongside a healthy diet comprising of proper amounts of vitamin and minerals. Attack One striking news of its attack can be dated back to in Cincinnati when an Alpha blue blood bulldog was reported to attack his owner killing him. The dog was so severely out of control that the police had to shoot at it six times until it died to enter the house. Alapahas are alert, outgoing and self-assured. In the home of an experienced owner, they are an excellent family dog. The Alapaha is a large dog, weighing 60 to 95 pounds, and has a big square head, a solid and muscular body, and a short coat in white or other colors, including brindle, trimmed with white. The Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog is maybe not the best choice for an inexperienced dog owner. An Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog needs a leader who can guide him with firmness and consistency and without using force or cruelty. Early, frequent socialization is essential. Purchase an Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog puppy from a breeder who raises the pups in the home and ensures that they are exposed to many different household sights and sounds, as well as people, before they go off to their new homes. Continue socializing your Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog throughout his life by taking him to puppy kindergarten class, visits to friends and neighbors, and outings to local shops and businesses. This is the only way he can learn to be discriminating, recognizing what is normal and what is truly a threat. Begin training as soon as you bring your Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog puppy home, while he is still at a manageable size. He is smart and trainable but has a mind of his own. He also responds well to any type of positive reinforcement training using rewards such as praise, play and treats. A well-socialized and trained Alapaha can get along well with other pets and should not be aggressive toward other dogs unless they are threatening. The Alapaha has a moderate activity level and needs a job to do, which can be anything from being your on-leash jogging companion to daily training activities. Expect to walk or jog him at least a mile daily in addition to 20 minutes or so of training practice. The Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog has a high prey drive and a territorial nature, so he needs a strong, solid fence at least six feet high to keep him on his own property. An underground electronic fence is never appropriate for this breed. Like any dog, Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog puppies are inveterate chewers and because of their size, they can do a whole lot of damage. And keep your Alapaha puppy busy with training, play and socialization experiences. A bored Alapaha is a destructive Alapaha, taking up digging, chewing and other undesirable behaviors. The Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog should spend plenty of time indoors and outdoors with his family. Chaining an Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog out in the yard and giving him little or no attention is not only cruel, it can also lead to aggression and destructive behavior. The Alapaha is white with varying amounts of black, brown, red and occasionally blue-merle. Some have a patch over one or both eyes or ears, a patch on the base of the tail, a large saddle patch, or various other marks. The History of Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldogs The Alapaha is thought to have existed in the southern United States for approximately years, but there is no documentation of the breed before .He probably descends from the various types and crosses of Bulldogs brought by early settlers to this country. Those dogs were taller and more athletic than the Bulldog we know today. They were never shown but were strictly working dogs, used to drive recalcitrant cattle and pigs, hunt varmints, and guard homesteads. In , a group of Southern dog lovers set out to preserve the rapidly disappearing dogs. Alapaha Temperament and Personality The breed standard says the Alapaha is dutiful, possessive and attentive, protective of his property and territorial from a young age. He is a devoted and loyal family dog who demands attention. The Alapaha takes his family membership seriously. He is suspicious of strangers and makes an excellent watchdog. He loves their company, especially when he is raised with them. The confident Alapaha is best suited to a working home with an experienced dog owner. He is intelligent and highly trainable if he has an effective leader he can respect. Start training your puppy the day you bring him home. Even at eight weeks old, he is capable of soaking up everything you can teach him. If possible, get him into puppy kindergarten class by the time he is 10 to 12 weeks old, and socialize, socialize, socialize. However, be aware that many puppy training classes require certain vaccines like kennel cough to be up to date, and many veterinarians recommend limited exposure to other dogs and public places until puppy vaccines including rabies, distemper and parvovirus have been completed. In lieu of formal training, you can begin training your puppy at home and socializing him among family and friends until puppy vaccines are completed. Breeders see the puppies daily and can make uncannily accurate recommendations once they know something about your lifestyle and personality. Whatever you want from an Alapaha, look for one whose parents have nice personalities and who has been well socialized from early puppyhood. What You Need to Know About Alapaha Health All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems, just as all people have the potential to inherit a particular disease. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur in her lines. In Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldogs, potential health problems can include hip dysplasia, congenital deafness, entropion—an eye problem in which the eyelid rolls inward—and skin problems. Not all of these conditions are detectable in a growing puppy, and it is impossible to predict whether an animal will be free of these maladies, which is why you must find a reputable breeder who is committed to breeding the healthiest animals possible. They should be able to produce independent certification that the parents of the dog and grandparents, etc. Do not purchase a puppy from a breeder who cannot provide you with written documentation that the parents were cleared of health problems that affect the breed. Having the dogs "vet checked" is not a substitute for genetic health testing. Don't fall for a dishonest breeder's assurances. If the breeder tells you she doesn't need to do those tests because she's never had problems in her lines, her dogs have been "vet checked," or any of the other excuses bad breeders have for skimping on the genetic testing of their dogs, walk away immediately. Careful breeders screen their breeding dogs for genetic disease and breed only the healthiest and best-looking specimens, but sometimes Mother Nature has other ideas and a puppy develops one of these diseases despite good breeding practices. Advances in veterinary medicine mean that in most cases the dogs can still live a good life. Keeping an Alapaha at an appropriate weight is one of the easiest ways to extend his life. Make the most of your preventive abilities to help ensure a healthier dog for life. Brush him at least once a week to remove dead hair and keep the skin and coat healthy. Finding a Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog Whether you want to go with a breeder or get your dog from a shelter or rescue, here are some things to keep in mind. Choosing an Alapaha Breeder Finding a good breeder is the key to finding the right puppy. A good breeder will match you with the right puppy, and will without question have done all the health certifications necessary to screen out health problems as much as possible. He or she is more interested in placing pups in the right homes than making big bucks. A good breeder can tell you about the history of the breed, explain why one puppy is considered pet quality while another is not, and discuss what health problems affect the breed and the steps she takes take to avoid those problems. Look for more information about the Alapaha and start your search for a good breeder at the website of the Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog Association. Also avoid breeders who only seem interested in how quickly they can unload a puppy on you and whether your credit card will go through. Put at least as much effort into researching your puppy as you would into choosing a new car or expensive appliance. It will save you money in the long run. Red flags include puppies always being available, multiple litters on the premises, having your choice of any puppy, and the ability to pay online with a credit card. Those things are convenient, but they are almost never associated with reputable breeders. Disreputable breeders and facilities that deal with puppy mills can be hard to distinguish from reliable operations. The puppy you buy should have been raised in a clean home environment, from parents with health clearances and conformation show and, ideally, working titles to prove that they are good specimens of the breed. Puppies should be temperament tested, vetted, dewormed, and socialized to give them a healthy, confident start in life. Before you decide to buy a puppy, consider whether an adult Alapaha might better suit your needs and lifestyle. Puppies are loads of fun, but they require a lot of time and effort before they grow up to become the dog of your dreams. An adult may already have some training and will probably be less active, destructive and demanding than a puppy. If you are interested in acquiring an older dog through breeders, ask them about purchasing a retired show dog or if they know of an adult dog who needs a new home. The breed is naturally wary of strangers, requiring early exposure to other people in his life. His strong prey drive and tendency to nip make this pup a challenge to own in a home with other dogs or cats. Our advice is that he should be the only pet in the household so that he can get all the attention. There are also issues with having a larger pet that exists across the board. The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog is relatively easy to train. He is intelligent to pick up new commands and routines quickly. The challenges you may face are his independence and stubborn streaks. We suggest using positive reinforcement instead of stern reprimands. A weekly session with a hound glove or curry brush will keep it healthy and stimulate circulation. After all, the earlier you catch it, the easier it is to manage. We recommend only buying from breeders who test their puppies. Minor Conditions. I got my 7 weeks old bulldog puppy and she's absolutely precious and adorable. I make sure that I leave enough water for her during the day and I only feed her twice a day. So far, she has 5 different toys to chew on. Well, during the first couple of days after she got her new toys, it was heaven for me because she left shoes, furniture, and other stuff alone. But she grew bored of these expensive toys rather quickly. I am thinking about buying one of those eight panel bronze wire pens for her so she can only gain access of certain area of the living room. Is this a good idea? During weekend, I spend a lot of time with her and I make sure she gets at least 1 hour of outdoor exercise a day. But still, nothing is able to correct her chewing problem. What are my options? My other question is that I would like to give my dog some snack in between two meals only during the weekend while I train her. The brand of the dog food I am using is Royal Canine recommended for bulldogs only I am wondering if there are some specific brands I need to purchase for her as snack. I heard from other dog owners that fresh carrots will be good snack choice for dogs. Is it safe for a 7 weeks old little pup like her? Great puppy!!!! Love her pics. Anyway, why did you decide on this breed? I want one too! Feeding her at am and pm may be too far between. Most dogs I know of and cats eat dinner - pm. As the more experienced posters commented, it a phase. Another phase will be when she becomes a teenager. Wait and see. If you raised kids, it may be more familiar. I give a variety to my dogs: carrots, green beans, blueberries, apple, banana. .I always have boiled chicken on hand in the fridge for a special treat for them. .I will give them commercial dog treats if the ingredients are healthy. .I stuff kongs and hollow sterilized bones with peanut butter or pumpkin and freeze that for a treat, they love when I put chicken broth in ice cube trays and give them frozen broth cubes. .I also give them bully sticks now because of the recommendations on this forum for a long lasting chew that's safe for their teeth! Great post! What dogs do you have?

With a Chihuahua Pug already prone to aggressive tendencies, thanks to its Chihuahua side, owners should take steps to ensure their hybrid pet does not become some diva. In short, behavior that is not acceptable from adult large dogs should not be tolerated in small dogs either. It will do well with someone who can provide a Your Pug Chihuahua mix should undergo obedience training and socialization while its still a puppy. Owners should also continue with the training and socialization programs even when their dog becomes an adult to prevent the development of the syndrome. Thanks to their propensity to please their owners, Chugs are easy to train. Here are some interesting tips to consider when training a small dog like the Chug: Think and stay positive. Always remember that small breeds tend to get scared or startled easily. Give your dog small treats and give belly rubs and praise freely. Keep it short and sweet. Stay low. Looming over your small dog while you shout commands will just frighten it. It will make you less intimidating and make your dog feel more comfortable and secure. Once your dog has learned some commands and tricks, you can stand and begin training from a higher level. Stand your ground. Small dogs get away with a lot of things because of their size. Stand your ground and stay true to the training. Housetraining small dogs is different. Crate training is one of the best ways to housetrain your puppy. It loves its human and will try its best to please its owner. However, you should be ready to provide your pet with lots of love and attention. Children should also be taught how to handle this dog properly. This means families with very young children might not be a good match for this dog. A Chihuahua Pug cross is an ideal pet for apartment dwellers, although it will thrive in all types of homes. It has to live indoors as its small stature means it can easily wiggle out of a fence. This dog also prefers warm weather, which is why it loves to snuggle so much. Life Span Did You Know? In general, these dogs are playful, energetic, and loving companions with charming personalities. They tend to resemble a Pug, but are smaller and sometimes have slightly longer snouts. Chug puppies tend to be loving and affectionate little dogs with a social and friendly disposition. They tend to get along with just about everyone including children, other dogs, and other pets. They can be initially reserved with strangers, but tend to warm up quickly as they bask in the attention from new friends. Because they are so small, they can be easily injured by young children who are still learning to walk or master fine motor control. So, interactions between young kids and puppies should be closely supervised, and this dog may be a better fit for families with older children. Mini Pugs can be prone to barking a lot, especially alert barking. So, you do want to work with them early on to train your dog to stop barking and keep it from becoming a nuisance behavior. Chugs tend to be highly adaptable dogs that do well in apartments as well as larger homes. Because they are a brachycephalic dog that cannot regulate their own temperature well, they are extremely sensitive to heat. Their protruding eyes, small size, and short coat also mean they will likely need some winter dog products to stay warm while out on walks during the cold months. As a companion breed that thrives on attention, they do not like to spend a lot of time alone. Potential health concerns in a Chug include respiratory issues, corneal ulcers, intervertebral disc disease, myelopathy, patellar luxation, and canine epilepsy. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of a dog and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Overall, a Chug is intelligent and eager to please. However, they can be stubborn and strong-willed. As long as training is consistent and positive, they are a good fit for owners of all experience levels. A Chug has a short, glossy coat that will shed moderately year-round. They require brushing a few times a week and bathing as needed. You will also need to check and clean their facial wrinkles and eyes regularly. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning them as needed can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, a Chug is more prone to developing dental problems. Daily brushing with a dog-friendly toothpaste or enzyme toothpaste, in addition to cleanings at the vet, is ideal. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this little dog. Just keep some safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs in mind, like bringing water, taking breaks, etc. A fully-grown Chug tends to stand inches tall and weighs pounds. Mini Pugs generally live for years on average. Featured Chug Article.
If you are looking for a new best friend look no further. Please take a moment to browse our website and see what sets us apart from the rest. About Us How we got started We are a family, that quickly fell in love with the breed and could not resist bringing a few home. Our family has not stopped growing since. Our passion is sharing these amazing French bulldogs with others who feel the same way about the amazing breed. What we do We are an in-home hobby breeder of the French Bulldog. Specialized in standard and exotic French Bulldogs, located in Northern Colorado. All of our frenchies come from the healthiest American and European Champion bloodlines and are all registered with the American Kennel Club AKC as are all puppies that leave our home. Our passion Our family has a passion for French bulldogs, we don't kennel, or mass produce our frenchies we are a loving home for our amazing bulldogs, on occasion keeping a few puppies because we can't seem to let them go. We choose to breed only because our terrific AKC French Bulldogs are too loveable and adorable not to share. We screen all homes to ensure our frenchies go to caring forever homes. About the breed Often described as "the clown dog," the French Bulldog originated as a companion dog for royalty and continues to be used as a companion dog. The breed is small and muscular with heavy bone structure, smooth soft coat, short face, and trademark "bat" ears. Prized for their affectionate natures and even dispositions, they are generally active and alert, but not unduly boisterous, great with kids and other dogs. Watch out for scams The AKC is the only purebred registry in the United States with an ongoing routine kennel inspection program. The AKC has a dedicated team of field inspectors who visit kennels to ensure the proper care and conditions of AKC-registered dogs and verify that breeders are maintaining accurate records for their dogs. When selecting a puppy, it is always wise to ask for proof of AKC such as a pedigree for both parents prior to making any arrangements. Once satisfied arrange to see the puppy on site and always ask to see the parents if available. This is to help assess conformation and limit fraud from stolen frenchies and poor breeders. Also get a sense of the environment and all animals wellbeing. Ensure a puppy checkup has been conducted by a vet and first shots have been administered and documented. Also ensure a contract and health guarantee are available and take the time to read both carefully. Health guarantees typically cover the puppy for congenital life-threatening defects. At this point you have found a good breeder if satisfied it is safe to purchase your puppy. We are seeing pictures of our French bulldogs in unauthorized places. Some scammers will steal pictures from websites and use them as their own to run scams on unsuspecting buyers. A bit out our history.First, we would like to thank you for visiting Asgard Doghouse French Bulldogs. We personally know and understand the purchase of a French Bulldog is a big decision. Here is a little bit of history of how we came to be. It started off by seeing a black brindle Frenchie named George at the lake that jumped onto my paddle board. I knew at that moment, I had to have one. I met a very knowledgeable breeder of over 30 years in Longmont, Colorado and purchased my first Frenchie. I was hooked. They are truly like potato chips, it is hard to stop at one. With my background in training and showing dogs for over 30 years, I added breeding to the list. We have decided as a family to raise, sell and train French Bulldogs combining the best of both worlds and our love of Frenchies. We have now shared this love of Frenchies with our children and now they are raising and breeding Frenchie babies with us. Our puppies are raised in home and shown love and attention daily. They will come pre-spoiled. We are selective in our breeding so we can provide the best dispositions and conformation in our Frenchies. We are selective in who we allow to purchase one of our puppies. We will want to meet you in person. If you are looking for a new family member to add to your life then feel free to contact us. We are excited to provide Frenchie babies to both areas that we love. He is so handsome -Louie Grumpypants We love this boy. What a great addition to add to your breeding program. AKC Champion lines - contact us to get him for your next breeding. This baby is from our friend Steve Clark's line. This little girl is going to be a great addition to our lines. We are so thrilled to have a baby from this line and her personality is truly one of Louie and Izzy. She is the calmest, most loving baby we have had. We are excited to watch her grow. Check out our available puppies. Moose has made everyday an adventure!! He is the funniest, happiest and sweetest puppy I have ever seen. I did not think dogs could become such a big part of your heart, but we can not imagine life without him! Morgan: When we first got Lola we had no idea she was going to become so spoiled and run the house!! Our family loves her so much!! She loves to play, run and cuddle. Lola has the best temperament and we can take her anywhere!! She never meets a stranger and is really great with kids. She can definitely be a handful at times. Like when she is having too much fun outside. But, we would not trade her for anything!! They are so personable, and each one has her own personality. They are always glad to see us. They love snuggling when we sit on the couch. They love it when they get to travel with us whether it is a trip to the store or across the country. They are always excited to load up in the truck. They get along well with our cats and love to meet other people. They can have fun no matter where they are. They are so much fun to just hang our with. They are like sweet, funny, cuddly tanks. They can be zooming around the house one minute and snuggled up on my lap the next. For me, Frenchies are the perfect dog!! People always ask me how I got started in breeding. Well I'm not exactly sure as I owned a retail antique store at the time. So I suppose my love of Frenchies started in with purchasing my first Frenchie Moxie. Soon after, I felt the calling to be a full-time stay-at-home bulldog mom. It started as a passion for dogs and a hobby, then grew into an obsession with this breed like many others can agree. From there, my love of Frenchies and my other passion for business combined, and here we are today with some of Colorado's Best French Bulldogs. You might find information on them from time to time here on my website. All our dogs are family pets first and puppies are raised in home here on the Western Slope of Colorado. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for California Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting a puppy from a professional, ethical breeder? Of course, there are many backyard breeders who have the best intentions in mind and only want to share the joy of this adorable crossbreed. However, oftentimes, these breeders might not conduct all the necessary health and genetic testing on their breeding dogs. Nor can they provide proper health guarantees for their puppies. Additionally, many backyard breeders do not choose new homes for the puppies as carefully as professional breeders. When a litter is born, they just sell all the puppies on a first come first serve basis. How much are Labradoodles when adopting from a backyard breeder? Puppy Mills Finally, we have the worst of the bunch — puppy mills. Unfortunately, these breeders only work for their own financial gain. More often than not, they neglect the wellbeing of their breeding dogs and puppies. Beware of pet stores, as well, as they often source their puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills usually overbreed their mama dogs and keep them on tight schedules to produce more and more puppies. Meanwhile, the dogs and puppies are kept in unsafe and unclean environments, often in small cages and kennels. Moreover, these pups often come with serious health conditions. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting from a puppy mill? Above all, we urge you to avoid these breeders at all costs. As a general rule of thumb, larger, Standard Labradoodles require more calories per day compared to smaller, Mini and Medium Labradoodles. All of them are tried, tested, and recommended by Doodle owners. Training Training and early socialization both play a key role in raising well-rounded Labradoodles. Vet Visits One of the most expensive parts of owning a dog is taking your pup to regular vet visits and wellness checks. And to be prepared for those unexpected vet visits, we recommend you choose a trustworthy pet insurance company. During the first year, you should make sure that your puppy is up to date with all of its vaccinations and preventative care for worms, fleas, ticks , and heartworm. Grooming You might already know that Labradoodles are high-maintenance when it comes to grooming and coat care. Time Investment Like any other pet, Labradoodles require a lot of time and effort from your part. Other Costs In addition to all the Labradoodle costs we mentioned above, there are other everyday items that your dog will need. These include food and water bowls, dog beds, dog crate, a collar and a leash, toys and chew toys, and poop bags. So, you know with absolute certainty that the Labradoodle is the right pup for you. But how can you find quality Labradoodle breeders? As fellow Doodle owners, we know how difficult it can be to find ethical, reputable breeders in your area. Why Are Labradoodles Expensive? Ethical Labradoodle breeders charge higher prices for their pups, as they carefully screen the breeding dogs through extensive health and genetic testing. In addition to that, they provide their clients with genetic health guarantees and implement various forms of enrichment methods when rearing the puppies. Grooming sessions at home can also serve as quality time with your canine companion. Make dog food yourself. Store-bought dog food and treats are convenient, but the cost adds up. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. A close up face image of Labradoodle puppy Max The price depends on many factors and can vary from breeder to breeder. While this might seem like a hefty price to pay for a puppy, the low prices that you find on social media or other ads are usually from puppy mills that try to over-breed these beloved animals in inappropriate and unethical ways. Low-quality living conditions notwithstanding, puppies from such places have a high probability of suffering from ailments and issues caused by genetic mutations occurring from rapid breeding. Labradoodle costs around the world In Australia the average prices for non-shedding Labradoodles ranged from AUD. There were some niche breeders that charged much more. Depending on how unique the coat color is, the price will vary. Parti-colored Labradoodles like Tuxedo Labradoodle or Phantom Labradoodle cost significantly more than a solid-colored cream, black, or gold Labradoodle. Sometimes, depending on your location, you may have to shell out extra dollars if you specifically want a multi-colored Labradoodle. Coat texture is another influencing factor. Shiny, sleek coats are more attractive and an indication of a superior bloodline. Hence, they are going to cost more. Curly and wavy-haired Labradoodles will be more expensive than straight-haired ones as they are almost non-shedding and hypoallergenic. Blue-eyed Labradoodles can be even more expensive, owing to their rarity and beauty. Labradoodle Size As they are crossbred, there are no specific breeding standards for Labradoodles. Most breeders classify Labradoodle puppy sizes as standard, medium, and miniature. Toy, teacup, miniature, and maxi are some other terms used to describe the size of Labradoodle dogs. The smaller the puppy size, the higher its price. This is because of the increased demand for smaller-sized dogs. Some breeders have their own standards and classifications when it comes to dog size and weight. While some breeders consider pound dogs as petite, others see them as miniature. Micro and petit are other terms that are used, both interchangeably and independently by different breeders. Usually, petit dogs fall in the pounds range, and micro dogs under 10 pounds. Age Typically, most people prefer buying a young puppy rather than a full-grown dog. Hence, prices are higher for puppies than dogs. For instance, a 6-month-old puppy is going to cost less than a 6-week-old one. A rich Apricot coat Labradoodle at the groomer. Generation Type Another determining factor is the percentage of each parent breed in the Labradoodle puppy. F1B generations have a purebred Poodle and an F1 generation Labradoodle as their parents. While this is a rarer generation, they are cheaper as their chances of being hypoallergenic is lesser than that of others. Generally, F1B Labradoodles are the most expensive generation as they have the highest chance of being hypoallergenic. Location and Demand The Labradoodle breed is one of the most popular crossbreed dogs, a close second to the Goldendoodles. This has significantly increased their value and demand. Dog breeders of bigger cities will have a large client pool and higher earnings. They usually have a hard time keeping up with the demands and hence have to increase their price. Breeders from rural areas have comparatively lower demand and charge less for their puppies. Nevertheless, the demand for low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs is high everywhere, regardless of the size and popularity of a place. While it might be cheaper to buy your Labradoodle puppy from a rural breeder, you might still have to beat your budget to travel the extra distance or to have the puppy transferred to you. Although the low prices advertised at puppy mills might be tempting, getting a Labradoodle puppy from a reputed breeder is always a better option. Besides being spayed, neutered, and vaccinated, puppies from reputed breeders will also be appropriately socialized. This will make it easier for them to adapt to their new home. Most reputable breeders establish their prices based on their experience, investment, knowledge, credentials, and reputation with previous customers. Some breeders even incorporate training from a young age, and some puppies are potty trained at just eight weeks old. Reputed breeders also have health certificates and genetic records of both parent dogs in place. These certificates are proof that your Labradoodle is in the best of health and hygiene. Other Costs Associated With Labradoodles The preliminary cost of a Labradoodle will be substantially less than the total expenses involved throughout its life. Additionally, you might have to spend more on training foods and treats. Grooming The grooming needs of Labradoodles may vary depending on the type and length of their coat. Although Labradoodles are almost hypoallergenic, they need regular brushing and bathing. Medical Costs Most crossbreed dogs are usually less prone to ailments and diseases. Their larger gene pool also reduces their risk of inheriting diseases. One of the most common health issues with Labradoodle is hip dysplasia. And the surgical procedure to fix this is expensive, which is especially necessary for older Labradoodles. Besides this, there are other health care costs like vaccinations and regular veterinarian check-ups Ohio State Veterinary School source. It safeguards you against any unforeseen situations that may arise in the future with regard to its health. Training and Boarding Costs Although Labradoodles are very intelligent and highly trainable, it is advisable to enroll them in a professional training program to ensure their all-round development. It also helps address their excessive barking and jumping, which is common in Labradoodles. Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that can turn destructive when left alone for a long time. So whenever you go on trips, you will have to leave them at a doggie care center. Can Labradoodles smile? Ideally, you should purchase an adjustable crate whose length you can adjust as and when your puppy grows. Labradoodles are highly energetic dogs who need toys to maintain their mental stimulation and to keep them from getting destructive due to boredom. You might also have to make a one-time investment on a good quality bed as they often tend to chew and scratch at it. Labradoodle Adoption Price While you may want to get your Labradoodle puppy from a shelter, the chances are slim as Labradoodles are highly sought-after breeds that are usually kept in tight breeding groups. This is usually done to cover the cost of medical and maintenance care. Adopting a puppy from a rescue shelter is a noble idea, but you must also prepare to deal with any possible future problems with their health and temperament, as rescue dogs usually have health and behavior problems. My Miniature Labradoodle Max wearing a stylish rain coat Avoiding Disreputable Breeders The pet business has now emerged as one of the biggest industries worldwide. Unfortunately, this has also birthed unethical puppy mills, backyard breeders, and online pet stores, who have little to no knowledge about raising and nurturing puppies. Often, unsuspecting pet lovers trying to save some money fall prey to these tricks and end up with an unhealthy puppy with health and temperamental issues. This leads to them spending a lot of money on the treatment and maintenance of these puppies down the road. So, is there a way to distinguish between good and bad breeders and avoid paying exorbitant prices by accidentally supporting these puppy mills? Start by doing plenty of research on the breeder and consciously avoid backyard breeders, pet stores, and online stores. Additionally, look out for these red flags: Unusually low-priced puppies. The breeder refuses to show the living conditions of their dogs and puppies. Adult dogs are kept in harsh conditions and small cages. Puppies seem reserved, edgy, and nervous around people. The breeder has no health certificates of puppies and its parent dogs. Breeder refuses to provide any paperwork. Here are some standards and conventions practiced by trustworthy breeders: They breed puppies indoors and will take equal care of the parent dogs. They offer ample space and freedom to their puppies and dogs to run, play, sleep, and do everything they desire. They periodically clean and groom the dogs. They promote a healthy bonding of puppies with their mother and littermates. They try to gauge if you are capable of raising a particular dog breed. They offer tips and tricks on puppy care and maintenance. They have health and vaccination certificates from a licensed veterinarian. They offer proper legal protection like providing a guarantee for puppy replacement after around 1. Going through previous testimonials and customer reviews is another way of determining the credibility of a breeder. Find out how long the breeder has been in the business. Have a proper conversation with them and get all your puppy-related questions answered before you decide to get your puppy from them. With their love and affection, these bundles of joy can not only turn your bad days into wonderful ones, their high intelligence and alert minds also make them great guard dogs. Before purchasing a Labradoodle puppy, make sure to research the breeder and never get puppies from breeders who cannot provide health certificates for the puppies and their parents. Such as whether they carry any late-onset inherited diseases, or are reactive to certain triggers. What Factors Determine Labradoodle Cost? There are a number of factors which may make people willing to pay more for a Labradoodle. Breeder Good breeders are rarely in it for the money. Even if they sell their puppies for a more money than they spent on them, the profit divided by the number of hours they spent caring the dam and her litter works out in cents! All breeders have their own personal philosophy on pricing pups. They might have a reputation and a waiting list which means they can charge more than the competition. They might also charge highly to deter people from buying their puppies on impulse. Provided you ask politely, a reputable breeder will be happy to explain how they arrived at the cost of their puppies. But a breeder who refuses to discuss how they set their price at all may be attempting to cover up the fact that their puppies have been very poorly raised and are not worth the asking price. Breeding Stock Breeders who invest in meticulous health screening of their sire and dam may pass the cost of that onto their buyers, and they have every right to do so. Puppies from thoroughly health tested parents cost more upfront, but they are likely to cost less in lifetime veterinary fees. Labradoodle puppies from parents with show or field titles may also be advertised at higher prices. The puppies of Labradoodles that have been backcrossed with a purebred Poodle will have a greater chance of inheriting the Poodle coat. Other factors There are other things which might affect Labradoodle costs too. For example, in cities and urban areas, miniature Labradoodles might command higher prices than standard Labradoodles. Some factors have nothing to do with the dog at all. For example, many reputable breeders avoid producing litters around Christmas time to avoid buyers passing them on as gifts to other people, or buying them on impulse without really thinking it through. Low quality breeders on the other hand, tend to push their prices up at this time of year. The Cost of Owning a Labradoodle in the First Year Whether you go a shelter or a breeder, adoption fees and purchase price are only the beginning of what it costs to own a Labradoodle. The first year will typically be the most expensive because this is when most major expenses occur. Such as Having the dog spay or neutered. Training classes. Bernedoodles with straight hair will have straight hair all over the body. Bernedoodles with straight hair are not IC affected. Having straight hair and being IC affected are two different things. Bernedoodles with a wavy coat will have straight hair on the muzzle and wavy hair on the rest of the body. In all of our F1 Bernedoodle pairings we have puppies with the wavy coat. This is one of my favorite coat types. Bernedoodle Wavy Coat The primary concerns for any dog breeder must be health, temperament and conformation; but who can deny that the outward appearance of a Bernedoodle pulls at our heartstrings! With careful breeding, breeders can now produce litters with predictable coat types and shedding propensities. One of the things that many people find attractive about the Bernedoodle is the low shedding and hypo-allergenic qualities of the coat, and the adorable ragamuffin look of the Bernedoodle. IC affected Bernedoodle Bernedoodles can have straight, wavy, or curly coats. Furnishings are the longer facial hair, including eyebrows, mustache and beard, found on most Bernedoodles. There is another term to describe the lack of furnishings: incorrect coat. The gene responsible for furnishings is dominant; so by testing the parent dogs DNA, it can be determined if a breed pair will produce puppies that all have furnishings, or if there will be some puppies with an incorrect or Bernese like coat. Dogs with furnishings are lower shedding than dogs without furnishings. If you have a family with allergies, a Bernedoodle with an incorrect coat is not the best match for you. By testing the parent dogs of Multigen Bernedoodles, your breeder can be sure not to breed parents that will produce puppies with incorrect coats without furnishings unintentionally. These Bernedoodles do not have furnishings. Utah Bernedoodles. Sit back, close your eyes, and imagine a Bernedoodle in your mind. What do they look like? While that mental image is often accurate, did you know that Bernedoodles can come in a wide variety of coat colors and textures? Also known as flat coat Bernedoodles, these dogs can sometimes be confused for purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs based on their appearance. So, is there anything wrong with this coat texture? Or, would a straight hair Bernedoodle make a great fit in your family? Keep reading to learn all the pros and cons! Can Bernedoodles Have Straight Hair? Although most Bernedoodles have curly hair, many Bernedoodles have straight hair instead! Naturally, some puppies will inherit more traits from one parent breed and some will inherit more from the other. Even from the same litter of Bernedoodles, some puppies may have flat coats similar to that of the Bernese Mountain Dog while others may have curly coats that more closely resemble the Poodle. Genetics can truly be a grab bag! Are Bernedoodles Always Curly? Bernedoodles can have curly hair, straight hair, or even an in-between, wavy coat! That being said, breeders often strive to produce as many curly haired puppies as possible. This is because curly-haired Bernedoodles are more likely to shed less and be allergy-friendly. This preference by breeders explains why you see many more curly Bernedoodles than those with flat coats. Straight hair is one of the traits a Bernedoodle puppy can inherit from their Bernese Mountain Dog lineage. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with flat coat Bernedoodles, puppies with curly coats tend to be more popular. Many people want the appearance and personality traits of a Bernese Mountain Dog with the allergy-friendly coat of the Poodle. As such, breeders typically strive for their puppies to inherit a curly coat. Reputable breeders will perform extensive genetic testing and familiarize themselves with the lineage of the parents to give them the best chance at this. However, there are different generations to choose from which can increase or decrease your odds of having a flat coat Bernedoodle. Photo courtesy of superdogmoose on Instagram. Check out this article that explains everything you need to know about Bernedoodle generations! What you should know for now is that the more Bernese Mountain Dog DNA your puppy has, the more likely they are to have straight hair. This is extremely uncommon, however. Are Straight Hair Bernedoodles Hypoallergenic? While no Bernedoodles are guaranteed to be completely hypoallergenic , straight haired Bernedoodles are far more likely to bother allergy sufferers than their curly haired counterparts. As you can see in the table we discussed earlier, these generations have the lowest theoretical percentage of Bernese Mountain Dog DNA. While this shedding might not be as bad as a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog, it will probably still be a significant amount. Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush : Brushing your dog regularly can help prevent hair from getting all over your house. This brush is the top of its class. Temperament, coat, size, color.Everything you need to know about Bernedoodles What is a Bernedoodle? A Bernedoodle is a Bernese Mountain Dog poodle mix. Mixing a standard, medium, or mini poodle to create a Bernedoodle. A standard poodle Bernese mix is a standard Bernedoodle a mini poodle mixed with a Bernese is a mini Bernedoodle. They are very gentle around the elderly and children. They seem to know what people can handle. Because of this they make perfect therapy and service dogs. They are easy to train and love to work. What is the Bernedoodle coat Like? Every Bernedoodle coat is different. The curlier the coat the less it will shed. The straighter the coat the more it will shed. Most Bernedoodles have the wavy hair coat that is low to no shed hair type. Most people with allergies are ok with this hair type. Bernedoodles with a more curly coat are more like the poodle and will not shed. It is very rare to have a bernedoodle with straight hair. Brushing your Bernedoodle twice a week will make shedding less noticeable. Bernedoodles need to be brushed at least once a week to prevent mating. It is necessary to have your Bernedoodle clipped every few months, you can do this yourself or have a professional do it. What size is a Bernedoodle? Bernedoodles come in different sizes just like the poodle. They come in standard, mini, and micro mini. Standard: These range in size from pounds inches at the shoulder. The reason for this huge range is because standard poodles range in size tremendously. I have had standard Bernedoodle adult weight only 45 pounds, but that is uncommon. An experienced breeder should be able to tell you within about pounds how big your puppy will be. In some occasions it is impossible to know. Mini: These range in size from pounds and inches at the shoulder. Micro Mini: These range in size from pounds. What Colors do Bernedoodles Come In? They also come in sable, brindle, chocolate, phantom, and merle. Scroll down to see photo examples. What is The Bernedoodle Lifespan? If you want to know how long a Bernedoodle lives, first it is interesting to know that Bernedoodles tend to be healthier than their parents' breeds. The Standard Bernedoodle live years. The Mini Bernedoodle lives years. The Micro Mini Bernedoodle live years. We are all about genetic testing and choosing the right parents. As they can be prone to hip, elbow dysplasia and eye problems. Just like most other breeds they can get cancer. Genetic testing can reduce the health concerns for Bernedoodles. Standard Poodles need to be tested for Hips, Eyes, Thyroid, and heart. Mini Poodles need to be tested in Eyes, Hips, and Vwd. What's the difference between furnished and unfurnished? The term "Furnishings" refers to the long hair on the extremities of the dog including the head and tail. When our Bernese is crossed with a Poodle the resulting dog is furnished. If one of our Bernese is crossed with certain bernedoodles, the result is unfurnished. We've had many families specifically ask for an unfurnished bernedoodle. Some families don't like the beard of the furnished bernedoodle or they love the bernese look, but like the bernedoodle temperament more. Here are some photo examples: F1, F1b, F2 What does all of that mean? Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Coat types can be split into 4 separate categories: CURLY COAT Curly coated Bernedoodles are the highest maintenance of the 4 types, but this coat type is the best option for people with moderate allergies due to the lack of shedding. Curly coats are still very plush, and it looks absolutely adorable.Usually we will see curly puppies in F1b generations and onwards, but sometimes we get curly F1s as well. These puppies are much less likely to shed than a straight coat or unfurnished, but are recommended for people with minor or no allergies as shedding amount can not be guaranteed. It is still important to take the unpredictability into account when choosing your puppy if you are prone to reacting to dogs. Please also take into consideration and research whether you are sensitive to dog saliva as well, which will cause reactions regardless of coat type! Generally between 6 months to 1 year is when the most drastic coat changes are seen. These puppies generally shed lightly to moderately, so they are not recommended for people with allergies. They are less likely to knot and mat compared to a wavy or curly coated puppy. Daily brushing is still recommended! These Bernedoodles are uniquely gorgeous in their own way, and typically keep their coat colours into adulthood better than furnished puppies. Unfurnished puppies will typically shed moderately, and are not recommended for people with allergies. Post category: Blog Posts There is so much confusion regarding the generations of Bernedoodles. I often have customers requesting a specific generation for no real reason other than they felt that is the generation that they want based on reading information that is not well researched. Instead, I ask them to refocus on the coat type, color, and size that they are looking for. There is no reason to focus on a specific generation if you are simply looking for a healthy and attractive pet. I have been breeding Bernedoodles for about 6 years and I have noticed no difference at all in the health of any different generation of Bernedoodle. There is no evidence that a specific generation of the Bernedoodle will affect the health of the puppy. Any of our Bernedoodles regardless of generation has been bred for the three things we focus on: temperament, beauty, and health. Of course, mother nature is a brutal force and things can go wrong even with the best planning but I can count on one hand how many major health issues I have had as a breeder. It is a combination of both an art and a science and we employ both tactics to reduce risk when we can. Genetic screening in combination with pedigree matching is the method we use to produce healthy puppies. Since the Bernedoodle is a breed in development there is not a lot of long term data regarding the longevity but based on what we know about the Bernese Mountain Dog, Poodles, and overall longevity based on size, it will likely be that a smaller sized Bernedoodle will live longer than a larger Bernedoodle. One more thing I will mention- Bernedoodle Generation and Allergy friendliness are not really correlated. A person can be allergic to either saliva or dander and if you are allergic to saliva you will be allergic to any and all Bernedoodles, Poodles, etc. If you are allergic to dander a Bernedoodle with the appropriate coat type will likely work for you. Before reading through the following description of coat types, I will say most Bernedoodle coats other than the Bernese Coat we have experience with have very little to no shedding. That being said we have almost never seen a curly-coated Bernedoodle shed. Bernedoodle coat types: There are four main coat types that a Bernedoodle can have: Straight: This is a coat type only achieved in Bernedoodle-to-Bernese or Bernedoodle-to-Bernedoodle breedings. While these dogs have a fluffy look, still they have the least amount of curl to their hair compared to the other coat types. Visually, they have a loose wave. We see this coat type very often in our Ultra Bernedoodles. Wavy: This is the traditional coat type of most F1 Bernedoodles that is not super curly but also not straight either. Wavy-coated dogs require brushing and grooming on a regular basis. Curly: This is the coat type that is most similar to that of a purebred poodle. These dogs rarely shed and often are the most suitable for those worried about loose hair. Curly coated dogs are the highest maintenance of all of the traditional Bernedoodle coats and will require more frequent bathing and grooming. Bernese Coat: This coat type is a throwback to the purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and often times exhibits the same level of shedding as well. This coat type appeals to people that are interested in health benefits and possibly decreased size of a Bernedoodle but do not want the maintenance of a doodle coat.
