He is great on-leash and on walks and has exposure to both natural and urban environments. He is dog friendly, although dogs of equal size and larger are best suited for his playstyle he tends to forget his own strength. Luka has had exposure to small children, but can become nervous if the child is loud or energetic. He is currently groomed by his owner and does well with baths, nail trims and grooming, and can be touched anywhere. He can be quite vocal and excited when meeting new or familiar people he adores people! He also loves to play — fetch, tug-o-war, and chase are some of his favorite! The ideal family for Luka needs to be able to be with him most of the time. His current owner works from home so he is used to having someone around. If the family is not able to be with him because of work, etc, he would need a support system such as another dog for company or a dog sitter. Luka has separation anxiety that causes him a lot of distress and should not be left alone for more than a couple hours at a time. Aside from this issue, he would make a great family dog for a family with older children, especially if they would like to do 4H or continue with his sports training. He would also do great in a home with a relaxed environment as a companion dog or with someone who has the capacity to take him everywhere. Officially, there is only a single type of Boxer dog recognized by major kennel clubs. However, fanciers and breeders have set the distinctions between Boxer dogs bred in different countries. The differences between the types of Boxer dogs in each region are heavily dependent on preferences. Breeders from each location have been cultivating specific characteristics or traits that they want the breed to exhibit. International kennel organizations also contributed to their variation as they prioritize the characteristics of a certain region over the other. Among the three types of Boxers, this is the second variant that has been merited as a standard in by The Kennel Club KC , one of the oldest canine organizations in the world. This substantiates why the UK standard leans more to the characteristic of this Boxer type. One of the defining characteristics of UK Boxers is their small feet, high knuckles, and slender legs which give them a more elegant look. It is considered to be the smallest and slimmest among the three. Nonetheless, the masculine physique which is the core trait of Boxers is still evident. Its slender body also provides more room for agility and precision in moving. It is also expected for UK Boxers to be biddable, calm, fearless, and self-assured. Oddly enough, the standard for this type of Boxer was only established after the two other Boxer types were standardized. Among the three, the German Boxer remains to be the more robust and largest type in terms of muscle mass and bone structure. Their physique has a more defined masculine figure with longer and stronger legs. These traditional Boxer features are probably retained through time since most German Boxers are still bred for their natural talents in herding and hunting. Another key characteristic of German Boxers is that they have a shorter snout compared to American Boxers but wider than the UK Boxers. According to most Boxer breeders, German Boxers are calmer and easier to train compared to the other types of Boxers. The traits and characteristics of the American Boxer were officially acknowledged in by the American Kennel Club. The most defining trait of this Boxer type lies in its coat. An American Boxer has a smooth, tight, and shiny coat that has no wrinkles. With this unique trait, it would be easy to distinguish an American Boxer among other variants. Boxer fanciers claim that American Boxers have a more elegant and balanced look. The reason could be because most American Boxers are bred to be show dogs or champions of conformation events. When it comes to temperament and behavior, the American Boxers are said to be playful yet constrained, patient, and stoic towards family members — especially with children. Also, they are said to be the most energetic Boxer among all types. If you have been searching about Boxers, you might have also heard about black Boxers although there are none in reality. Let me explain to you in this section the different coat colors and markings that Boxer dogs have. Fawn Boxer Dog Fawn coat color can exhibit a range of hues, including shades of yellow, tan, red, and mahogany. It is one of the two standard coat colors recognized by kennel clubs and possibly the most iconic. Too much white on the coat is considered a fault. The common markings for fawn Boxers are white flash and a black mask. The black mask refers to a black muzzle that can also be seen on German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois. Brindle Boxer Dog Brindle is not a color but a pattern. This is characterized by the presence of streaks of irregular and darker color against the light color background of the coat. For Boxers, the background is usually a color ranging from fawn to deep red. The appearance of the brindle coat will vary depending on the thickness and thinness of the color strips. Some may look like almost solid fawns while some may have more defined patterns in their body. Depending on the shade of the brindle, a Boxer dog may be called a light brindle, golden brindle, fawn brindle, red brindle, or mahogany brindle. The concentration of brindle patterns in Boxers can also be classified into three: tiger brindle, reverse brindle, and seal brindle. The streaks of irregular darker hair patterns are spread across a light background. On the other hand, reverse brindle dogs have strips of irregular lighter color against a darker color background. They differ from a seal brindle Boxer who sports a heavy concentration of dark streaks on their coat. However, for the record, there is no such thing as black Boxer dogs in reality. Purebred Boxer dogs do not carry the black color gene so it is impossible for them to have a black base. Boxers can only either be fawn to mahogany , brindle, or white. The black Boxer dogs that are advertised are brindle in nature. Remember the seal brindle that I mentioned earlier? When the streaks of the darker color patterns are too tight that they seal or shut the light background off, the coat appears to be solid black. In other words, the black coloration is nothing but an illusion. Worst, due to the hoaxes about white Boxers, they were even culled back then. Contrary to popular belief, white Boxers are not albino. Albinism occurs when a dog lacks pigmentation on its body. However, that is not the case for white Boxers. Similar to seal, the white coat for Boxers is produced due to an unusual patterning in the body. In short, they just have large white patches. White Boxers are either fawn or brindle with a large area covered with white markings. Boxers with this coat color typically do not have other markings in their body including a black mask. Those with patches of other colors in their body patches on the eyes, black mask, ears, back are called Check Boxers and are considered to be particolored. Boxers that have more than a third of white color in their coat or are all white are disqualified on conformation shows. The good news is that the AKC now recognizes the white coat color but is still considered to be non-standard. White Boxers are allowed to have limited AKC registration but are prohibited from being used on breeding. Knowing the type of Boxer you have would be easy if you bought from a reputable breeder. However, if circumstances do not allow the aforementioned ways, you can also try observing the unique characteristics of each type of Boxer. As discussed earlier, English or UK Boxers have long, slender legs which give them an elegant look. One of their defining characteristics is their high knuckles and small feet. If your dog sports this appearance, it is probably a UK Boxer. If your dog is large compared to other Boxers you see, there is a high tendency that it is a German Boxer. This type of Boxer is the biggest among the three. It has a dense bone and a larger and more masculine frame compared to the UK and American Boxer. Spotting if your Boxer is an American type would be easy. The defining trait of an American Boxer is its slick, smooth, shiny, tight coat. In terms of temperament, it would be hard to distinguish the three types of Boxers as they exhibit similar behaviors: confidence, patient, calm, and watchful. However, the German Boxer is said to be the calmest Boxer among the three. The American Boxer on the other hand is the most energetic type. If your Boxer sports extraordinary demeanor and composure unlike other Boxers, there is a great possibility that it is a German Boxer. Subsequently, if it acts like a bomb of energy, it is probably an American Boxer. Although all of the types of Boxers can join dog shows, some are more favored by specific kennel clubs. Conformation shows usually set guidelines following the standards provided by these organizations. Thus, Boxers that perfectly adhere to the standards are more favored than the others. If you want to join Boxer shows, the first thing you need to do is to identify the type of Boxer you own as well as the kennel club that sponsors the event. The prices of the three different types of Boxers have no significant differences. Boxer dogs with champion blood are more expensive than ordinary purebred Boxers. When it comes to coat color, the most expensive Boxer puppy would be the one with a seal brindle. As discussed earlier, a Boxer with this coat creates an illusion of a solid black color. Due to their rarity, Boxer dogs with seal brindle color are highly valued and priced. Places to Find Different Types of Boxer Dogs for Sale and Adoption In buying a Boxer dog, you should only transact with reputable breeders and avoid buying from backyard breeders and puppy mills. A professional Boxer breeder only aims to enhance and further the characteristics of the breed. Here are the places where you can find reputable and professional Boxer breeders. This online marketplace is regulated by the AKC itself so you have the assurance that all of the Boxer puppies sold are bred ethically and professionally. Most of the advertised Boxers in this marketplace came from the bloodlines of American Boxers. They have a acre facility dedicated to breeding German and UK Boxer dogs. This breeder is interested in breeding German Boxers that is why all of the dogs in their facility have German pedigrees. Unfortunately, a great number of Boxer dogs also end up in rescue centers. If you are eyeing to adopt one, here are the places where you can apply: American Boxer Club Rescue Directory — The parent organization of Boxer clubs in America has a complete list of the numerous Boxer rescue organizations across the country. There are dedicated shelters for each state and region of the US. Adopt-a-Pet — This is an online pet database that is dedicated to rehoming Boxer dogs. There are hundreds of Boxers posted on their sites every day that are available for adoption. It is affiliated with over 12, pet shelters across the US and Canada. All types of Boxer dogs English, German, and American are pretty common. In fact, kennel clubs do not consider these types as exactly legit. The terms American, UK, and German Boxer dogs are mostly used by breeders residing in a certain location. The boat only tips in terms of coat color. Contrary to popular belief that white is the rarest color for Boxers, seal brindle Boxers are the real gems. The tight patterns of a dark streak of hairs give an illusion of solid black coat color. Due to their rarity, they are also considered to be more expensive compared to other colors. What Is a European Boxer Dog? A European Boxer dog is another term used to refer to German Boxers. They are more masculine and have larger body frames. To be fair, all Boxer dogs are equally good. However, there are unique traits evident to each type of Boxer dog. The physique of a German Boxer dog is more robust than the other types, giving it an impression of a more reliable guardian. On the other hand, the unique features of American Boxer shiny tight coat and UK Boxer high knuckles and slender feet give them a more elegant look. If you are after a sport or a working dog, German Boxers would be preferable. On the other hand, if you would like to join conformation events, the American or UK Boxer will be your go-to. In addition, you should also consider your region as judges favor a certain type of Boxer depending on their origin. For the behavior and temperament, all three are lively yet calm, easily trained, and self-composed. However, breeders and owners testify that American Boxers are more energetic compared to the other types of Boxers. Your preference and lifestyle will be your criteria in choosing which Boxer matches you. Aside from their slight differences in size and appearance, they are all Boxer dogs that exhibit elegance and vigor. Their temperament and behavior will heavily depend on the environment they are raised in and the training they received. In terms of Boxer types according to coat colors, you should carefully weigh your options and refer to what the standard says. If you aspire to enter show events, you should not choose a Boxer puppy that is white or has white patches that cover more than a third of its body as such traits are considered faults. You should take note that a Boxer is not a dog for beginners. It is a breed that requires proper training and attention. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. There is a lot of talk about black Boxers dogs; some potential puppy buyers will actively seek out this colored puppy, but their searching is in vain. It may be hard to believe it when you see photos, but black boxers do not exist — the color gene responsible for black coat color does not exist within the breed. Brindle is a pattern of color, it is a striping effect. With most brindle Boxers, the dark stripes are clearly over a fawn background. However, with Boxer dogs that appear to have a black coat, this is due to super heavy reserve brindling. In fact, it can be so dark and so thick, that you cannot see any fawn beneath it. This gives the dog a very dark coat that does indeed appear to be black. Here, we'll go into the facts a bit more to talk about why black cannot exist with the breed and some myths are swirl about regarding this perceived coat color. Why Colors are Misinterpreted It is very easy to see a dog and immediately assume that he is a certain color, based on what your eyes are telling you. However, with some breeds, the Boxer included, you must take a second look. It is sometimes only when you realize how brindle can cause an effect of sorts, that makes a first impression of black, that it starts to make sense. In addition, some Boxers are given the term of black; however, in many cases, this is a shortened term that comes from longer 'black brindle'. The base color of all purebred Boxers is fawn. Brindles are actually fawn with a brindle marking. Those markings are made of a pattern for fur consisting of black striping which covers the fawn… Sometimes just a bit lightly brindled and sometimes a lot a heavily brindled dog. A black Boxer with white flash? Your eyes are playing tricks on you. This pup is super dark reverse brindle with white markings. Cassandra, 5 months old Photo couresty of Christopher Many wonder if perhaps there were black Boxers that were mostly bred out of the lines and that perhaps now and again a dog with a black coat shows up somewhere. However, if we look to the record keeping of the past century, we can see that this is not the case. In this year time period, a black Boxer appeared once, however there is a catch to this. In the Germany, in the late 's a Boxer was paired with a mixed dog that was part Bulldog and part Schnauzer. The resulting litter had puppies that had black coats. Since another breed was introduced into the bloodline, they were not purebreds. These dogs were not used for any further breeding and therefore did not have any influence on genetics going forward. Once in a while there will be a breeder that claims to have black Boxers and will point to this one incident long ago as evidence that black does indeed run in the bloodline. However, since those mixed dogs with black coats were never used for any sort of develop program this simply does not hold true. Another element that shows that this coloring does not exist in the Boxer line is the rule that the Munich Boxer Club created in .This group had stringent control over breeding and development of Boxers in Germany and set the guidelines for the standard, conformation and all elements regarding appearance including coloring. This group did not wish for any experimenting to be done that would introduce the color black and for this reason they made a clear rule that black Boxers would not be accepted. Some make the argument that programs may have ignored this ruling and still attempted to breed black Boxers. However it would have not been in their best interest to do so and additionally, any resulting dogs would have not been part of the Munich Boxer Club since they couldn't have been registered there. This means that any such hypothetical dogs could not have genetically been included in the Boxer's bloodline since they would have been barred from any programs that were developing and perfecting the breed. So, now that we know: This color does not exist in the line The only record of any black Boxer in the last century was a mixed dog and not a purebred Guidelines and strict rules of of the club in Munich that was the foundation of today's Boxers clearly excluded black Boxers. And it is also fair to say: The chance of there being some odd, rare gene mutation that brings black into the coat is extraordinarily rare; mathematically the odds are so low that this can be ruled out Black Boxer puppies cannot be born due to a hidden gene; this is because black is dominant over all other colors. It cannot be recessive, it always comes out over others Why are some people still adamant that this coloring exists? Diesel, at 2 years old Photo courtesy of Brittany Calvert This leads us to the conclusion of only two possibilities in this regard: A 'true' black Boxer simply cannot be a purebred. It is assumed that in this case, it would be done to sell the pups at a higher cost. Some elements to ponder.Their registration papers do not have that color code as an option. Therefore, even if someone verbally dubs a Boxer to have a black coat, the dog - if registered with a recognized club - would officially be another color; and that would most likely be brindle. Since the pup would be handed over to new owners with papers stating he was not black, how can they simultaneously claim to have black Boxer dogs? And this of course, is very unethical. In Summary Every being whether it is a mammal, like a dog, human, etc. These genes determine everything about the being, from skin color to the number legs to where the eyes are.Genes control coat color in dogs, too. In order for a dog to be black, that breed of dog must contain the gene for having a black coat. Boxer dogs do not have that gene. So, there cannot be any black Boxer dogs. It is genetically impossible. A Boxer that is black, or true black with brown points, for example, MUST be a mixed breed or a heavily brindled dog. My boxer has just had puppies and one of the brown puppies has blue eyes. Does that automatically mean that she will be blind or will that eventually go away? The puppies are 3 to 4 weeks old. Photo Credit: Katie! Here's what I would do: hold a treat in front of the dog's face. Then move it up and down. If the dogs head goes up and down or it looks like it's looking at the treat, then the dog might not be blind. All puppies are born with blue eyes. Answer by Doc's wife It is too early to tell, it might be just fine. The only genetic problem I know of in this breed is white boxers have hearing issues. Answer by anwen55 All puppies have blue eyes when they are born. Eye color is not an indication of blindness, the only way you can tell is to take it to the vet. Answer by K9 Crazy It's really hard to tell at such a young age. Puppies that young can't see very well even though they have their eyes open. It's best to wait until the pup is a few weeks older to test it out. A good test is to drop a treat on the floor and see if the puppy looks at it and is able to find it with no problem. Or you can wave your hand in front of the puppy's face and see if it follows your hand. Answer by pat We had a fawn and white male with blue eyes who recently died and we are looking for a boxer puppy with blue eyes. Know better? Give your own answer! It is a complete myth to think that the white boxer dogs are an Albino production. They are as normal as any boxer breed and usually are born with blue colored eyes. Watch the full video of blue eyed boxer below. Yes, I do believe they like one another. It only took a few days for Allie to accept Bruno into her pack. How do I know she has accepted him? Because Allie started pushing her food around , elling Bruno not to eat—a sure sign that she accepts the little puppy into her pack. He is deaf so we have to watch him if we let him out of the fence, because it wouldn't do any good to holler for him, since he cannot hear us. He also has blue eyes , which I think is very rare, because most Boxers that I see only have one blue eye , and he has 2 blue eyes. He likes to sleep, play, eat , he likes to be in the house because his hair is thin and short. He also likes to play with my Australian Shepherd Dixie. He always has to sleep in the bed with me. He has to either be leaning on you, sitting on your foot , or lying on you when you are in the bed. He absolutely HATES getting a bath , but he likes it when he gets out and you put the towel over his whole body and start rubbing him all over. His bad habits are: chewing up my little sisters toys , barking when he can't see or find you. He gets a lot of exercise during the day, because we have an acre fenced in where they can run as much as they like. He's the biggest clown I know and snores like you wouldn't believe, but we love him dearly. Shaggy the Boxer in his crate with a cone on his head after being neutered. My name is Bear, by the way. Now go on.Notice the ears are not cropped and the tail is not docked. It is illegal to do so in a lot of European countries.
Training hyperactive, distracted puppies can be frustrating, but you can accomplish the task if you give the puppy the opportunity to succeed by not asking too much of him. In addition, give him plenty of opportunities to work off excess energy; a tired dog is a good dog. By introducing some simple steps into your puppy's daily routine, training can be achieved, even if your puppy is hyperactive and easily distracted. Exercise and socialize your puppy, exposing him to various environments, people and animals. If he is accustomed to new things, he won't react every time he encounters something novel. In addition, puppies need at least 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. If you tire him out, he won't be hyperactive; he'll be sleeping. Implement a "Nothing in life is free" program; make your puppy work for everything he wants. This policy has two desired effects: it shortens training sessions to just less than a minute and it increases your puppy's motivation. For example, before you throw a ball, make your puppy sit, even if just for a second. Teach your puppy to lie down before you pet him. Make him stay until you release him when you set down his food bowl. If he doesn't, pick up the food bowl until he complies. Train in locations that have few or no distractions. Teach a new skill in a room of your house, door closed and distractions removed. Once your puppy masters the skill in that location, move to one with more distractions. Then, move to the back yard. Then the front yard. Finally, move to the park. If your puppy ever gets too distracted to work, you're moving too fast. Go back to where he last succeeded. Motivate your puppy by rewarding with high-grade treats in the beginning. You will need to revisit those high-value rewards each time you increase distractions. For example, when teaching a new behavior, reward your puppy with hot dogs, chicken or another exciting treat. Once he has learned the behavior, give a meaty dog treat. When he can do the behavior consistently, begin rewarding with kibble before finally phasing to praise and petting. To surprise your puppy, continue to give high-value rewards occasionally. Each time you move to a new, more distracting location, reward with the high-value treats again. As your puppy improves, you can reduce the quality of the reward and gradually fade the treat altogether. Keep training sessions short. Practice only a minute or two at a time and then reward your puppy with a game or a walk. If your puppy does the behavior perfectly on the first try, reward him with excited praise and a game or high value treat, and then end the training session. Teach your dog a focus command, which will help him ignore distractions. Hold a treat to your forehead and say "watch. After a couple of repetitions, put the treat in your pocket, then use your finger to point to your forehead. Reward success. Practice until your puppy will look at you when he hears the command. Start where there are no distractions; as your puppy's performance improves, add distractions. If he cannot focus, go back to where he last performed well. Tips Control your puppy at all times. He should always wear a collar; if outside, he should be on a leash unless he's in your fenced backyard. Warnings Don't punish your hyperactive puppy. His behavior is not a sign of disrespect, but confusion. If you feel frustrated, take a break. Puppies can sense your feelings; if you are angry, he may become too confused and frightened to perform. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out. The Dog Training Elite Chicago training theory is mostly based around classical conditioning, also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when an owner says "sit," their dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. Ready to turn your Golden Retriever puppy into a loyal and loving companion? Find a trainer near you today! We help your dog become a valued companion and beloved member of the family. Read what our customers have to say and then give us a call! Once the in-home training started, Blondie smoothly progressed just like they said she would! Katie and Tim are so great with dogs and people! Blondie is going to continue on for Support Dog training and I am so relieved we have their help along the way to guide us through all of our necessary requirements! Would recommend their training courses to anyone- and plan to use them again for future puppies! Katie has been our main trainer for 1 on 1 sessions. We really needed leash work and for him to control his excitement. He was also less confident in doing some things so they have helped with that too. He went from refusing to step on a raised dog bed to jumping on the concrete round balls you see in front of Target stores!!! We also introduced a puppy to our family of the same breed. Katie was always there via text or phone to help with the transition. They are quite accommodating when it comes to continued communication when I needed help. We also began some puppy training WITH our older dog so they were in a more comfortable environment together and learning at the same time. This helped all of us to understand each dogs needs as well. We adopted our dog when she was 3, which means 3 years of anxiety to work through. Before working with Karen and DTE, walks were stressful because our dog would react aggressively to any other person out. Now we can enjoy our time out together, keeping her focus on me and not all the other distractions. It was very challenging to get Che to listen at first, given how stubborn Huskies are as a breed, but with persistence, practice, and some great one-on-one sessions, we were able to get Che over some large hurdles. Che is super obedient now compared to how he used to be, well-behaved off leash, and has successfully traveled on a plane! I never thought we could get here with Che's training and I am very grateful to Jeff and his guidance. Our 10 month old Cavapoo has been learning so much and continues to learn. It has been nothing but enjoyable with my puppy Frisco. He is doing amazing and I'm so proud of him. I appreciate everything Tim has done. Thank you so much!!!!! They are very personable, the training is easy for me to continue on my own at home, and very effective. Katie and Tim are kind, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable. They listened to my concerns and tailored their approach to suit my anxious dog. If you are looking for basic training for a puppy or even extended training for an older dog like mine, I cannot recommend them enough.

I'm looking forward to adding this to his diet along with the kibble that he eats. I was very satisfied with the food. Brian ate the whole meal and wiped the bowl clean every time! He was happy, and so I was happy to see that he was enjoying his meal. We don't cook non-veg at home, but I know meat is important for Junior. Benny's Bowl is perfect for me because of this. I don't have to be guilty about not being able to provide my dog non-veg. Junior also didn't face any digestion issues because of this, which is a big add-on. I was so glad that I could actually see the chunks of carrots, pumpkins and peas! The kind of satisfaction I felt was great. But when my dog gobbled up everything, I was completely sure that this was the right food for my dog. I especially liked the small pouches which were very convenient. Casper loved the food. The MRP starts from Rs. In a subscription plan the price starts from Rs. How does the food stay fresh without preservatives? See you tomorrow with the live action. Good night and take care! Wow, this has been some match. This comeback is of humongous proportions. RCB are riding on momentum, and it seems difficult to stop them. The IPL final will be played at the Chinnaswamy. Is it their time to win the trophy? AB de Villiers is the man of the match. No prizes for guessing: "I was very nervous. Just wanted to focus on the basics. Knew if I was till the end, we would be close. Speaks volumes about the character of the side. We were down and out in the first half of the tournament and have turned it around. Cricket is a funny game, it is never over until it is over. That should end a lot of debates about who is the best batsman going around. So calm and composed under pressure. AB took Iqbal took along. The opposition was worried about him. Credit to Iqbal to for maintaining his composure. The pitch settled in the second half. Did not mind the showers, that settled the track. It could not be better scripted one for us. The crowd has always supported us, this one os for the crowd. With not a little help from Iqbal Abdulla of course. There's one more game in Delhi to get to the finals. At one point, we were down to , but it was very good batting by Dwayne Smith. AB de Villiers at the other end was like a monk and carried the team all by himself. They are in the finals. This is cricket, you can never count any team out. Kohli is pumped, AB is calm. Take a bow champ. The crowd has gone nuts, Chinnaswamy has lost its roof. This is not a one-man show. Kohli has gone from being furious to being ecstatic to being emotional. He has given De Villiers the biggest and the warmest of hugs and is over the moon at the moment. The RCB players are celebrating in the middle! Insane batting from de Villiers. From being 5 down in the first 6 overs, RCB now need 3 runs off 12 balls! That's some comeback! That is right. Full on the pads, flicked like an opening Test batsman to the deep square leg fence. This is pathetic bowling from Bravo. He has wilted under pressure, but take a bow Iqbal Abdulla. Outside off this time, he slashes hard at it, and gets a thick edge that goes fine to the third man fence. Short ball on the body, he fends it away from him, and fine enough to beat a diving fine-leg. And now Abdulla joins the party. Swivels around nicely and then helps is around to the fine leg boundary. Kohli is like a cat at the boundary jumping around. RCB have scripted magic. Down leg. And now Raina is furious with the call. Now Raina is furious! That ball had touched the pad, but it was given as a wide. Bravo couldn't believe it. Raina was exchanging words with the umpire. On the off stump, he goes for a reverse sweep but the ball hits the thigh pad and runs to the third man fence. He is running hot and everything is going for him. Lucky, but he deserves all the luck today. Can the DJ do some magic. He will bowl now. RCB in the driver's seat now. Wow AB has scripted something magic. If don't get you will! Unleashes the reverse sweep! Takes a full ball from outside leg and hits it past short third man. And now some cheek. Changes his position, gets into a reverse position and then just places it between point and short third man. The crowd is up and shouting their lungs out. Make a statue of AB in that position already. AB de Villiers, you beauty! If Kohli carried them to the playoffs, it's AB who's taking them to the finals. The best batsman in the world for a reason. That is a slot ball, and de Villiers gets underneath that and launches it over deep midwicket and very very deep. And AB was sitting back waiting for the slower ball and smoked it over deep mid-wicket. Insane stuff, this is comeback of gigantic proportions. The link has been copied! Is it possible to tire out a German Shepherd? This is a question many Shepherd owners have found themselves asking on more than one occasion. German Shepherds are naturally high-energy dogs and few families are physically active enough to keep up with them. This begs the question, how much exercise does a German Shepherd need? And the next one, is it possible for them to get enough? While it may not seem like it sometimes, it is definitely possible for German Shepherds to get enough exercise. Overexercising can actually instigate the hip dysplasia problems that the breed is already prone to. Thus, it is important to know how much exercise your German Shepherd should be getting — and what kind. By the end of this article, you'll know exactly how to get your pup some quality, healthy exercise. Originally, they were bred for hard work on the farm, herding and guarding flocks of sheep. They would spend hours each day keeping the flock together, which requires a lot of running. Plus, they were constantly on alert for danger and ready to neutralize threats to their charges. These high-energy dogs need plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy. For most dogs, this translates to at least 90 minutes of exercise each day. This can happen in bursts throughout the day and a wide variety of high-energy activities count. This includes taking them for walks or runs, hiking, playing fetch, agility classes, and so much more. If you're an active person looking for a running or hiking buddy, a German Shepherd is a perfect dog for you! They have the energy and endurance to keep up with you on long walks or runs. German Shepherds also make great agility dogs - they love to jump, run, and play! If you're looking for a fun way to exercise your German Shepherd and yourself! Maybe you have a hard time sitting still or concentrating on a task. You might even feel a little anxious. Whatever it is, the frustration dissipates as soon as you go for a good run. German Shepherds are like that — all the time. However, individual needs vary. These can be based on factors such as age, general health, overall fitness level and habits, and more. They may try to get your attention by barking, whining, or jumping up on you. Perhaps they pace back and forth or otherwise appear anxious. Excessive Chewing or Digging With those feelings of restlessness pushing them, dogs start to look for ways to burn off their excess energy. Unfortunately for us, this usually means they start digging up the yard or chewing on the furniture. Whatever is within a bored German Shepherd's reach has no hope for escape. Excessive Barking Another annoying method they will use to burn off excess energy is to bark at everything that moves. They may be trying to give themselves a job to do, seeking attention out of boredom, or both. Weight Gain Just like people, a lack of exercise puts German Shepherds at risk of gaining weight. This is especially true if they have free access to food. They may eat more out of pure boredom. Unfortunately, these dogs are already susceptible to problems like hip dysplasia, which is greatly exacerbated by being overweight. Thus, they need plenty of exercise too. However, they need it in shorter, more frequent doses. Playful pups get a lot of it themselves as they run around and explore their world. However, you should provide about 5 minutes of formal exercise such as a walk for every month of their age. The best exercises for German Shepherd puppies are short walks or runs, playing fetch games, and swimming. These activities will help them burn off some of their energy while learning commands and socializing with other dogs. Exercise for Senior German Shepherds As dogs age, their muscles get weaker and their joints become more sensitive. Senior German Shepherds should get at least 20 minutes of exercise a day, but no more than 60 minutes. The best type of exercise for senior German Shepherds is walking or slow jogging. Swimming is also a great exercise for a senior German Shepherd as it puts no strain on their joints. Other forms of low-impact exercise for senior German Shepherds include playing fetch and agility training. Just make sure to keep the activity level low and short, and never push them too hard. The Best Type of Exercise for German Shepherds The best type of exercise for German shepherds is a combination of aerobic activity and mental stimulation. Aerobic activity is important for German Shepherds because it helps to keep their heart and lungs healthy. Mental stimulation is also vital for preventing boredom. In addition to daily walks or runs, German shepherds also benefit from other forms of exercise, such as active games like fetch or tug-of-war, swimming, and agility training. If you have the space, it might be helpful to set up an agility course in your yard. Another great option is to enroll your dog in dog sports. If you want to really give your German Shepherd a workout, dog sports such as agility or flyball are excellent. These activities will tire your pup out both physically and mentally. You can also get dog toys that are specifically designed to be mentally stimulating for pups. These are helpful for days when you are short on time, but should not take the place of regular exercise. If you like to be active, include your pup! Take your dog hiking with you and give him a chance to explore different terrain and new areas. You need the best exercise for German Shepherd puppies to keep them healthy, fit, and, more importantly… Out of mischief! Quite the opposite is true for your fast-growing breed! German Shepherd puppies should stick to only five minutes of continuous, on-leash leisurely walking at a time, based on their age in months. So, an 8-week-old puppy can walk for 10 minutes at a time on a leash, while a 6-month-old can walk on a leash for 30 minutes at a time. However, your puppy can enjoy low-impact, gentle exercises for longer periods of time. You can play games that work on sustained growth multiple times per day safely. Instead, exercise on soft surfaces, for example: Grass Sand Dirt paths or trails Stretching of soft ligaments at too early an age, strains on young, growing joints, and carrying too much weight on their overall framework can and will harm your young puppy. This leads to problems in adulthood, which you could avoid! Remember to watch for: Panting heavily with rapid breath Lagging on their walks for longer than usual Stopping on walks and standing Lying down on their belly or side If your dog is hyperactive and displays excessive chewing and destructive behavior, they may need engaging brain stimulation to help them use their brains to engage in their environments constructively. Ideally, you also need to teach them basic commands and house manners. Start now with basic obedience training to avoid later behavioral issues. Eventually, your active, adult GSD will need at least 2 walks of 45 minutes each source. Other great ways to exercise your German Shepherd puppy include working on their balance, enjoying mental stimulation, and playing gently with toys they love. Until your vet clears your dog as having their bones fully fused this is around 12 to 18 months of age , activity should be cautious and slow-paced. Up to twelve months of age, natural free running is the best way to exercise German Shepherds. With free running, your dog is off-leash and can stop or slow as they wish. Limit and monitor on-leash walks and activity while your German Shepherd is growing. When walking on a leash, allow them to Walk at their own pace Stop and start as they please Sniff around leisurely to explore the grass, flowers, and trees Lay down, roll around, and dig in approved digging places Use a no-pull harness with a design that allows for natural shoulder movement to avoid unnatural gait development. Try this padded no-pull harness on your German Shepherd to avoid any neck injuries to her while she is young. This design also limits pulling and helps teach nice leash walking manners. The handle on the back of the no-pull harness makes it easy to grab your pup to stop them from running into a hazard or just to catch them! Read more helpful information on the benefits and disadvantages of using a harness or a collar to help you choose the right equipment for walking your new puppy. There are plenty of other ideas to try with your new baby German Shepherd. Even better? You can find so many ways to learn what your new German Shepherd puppy likes to play with for their fun and games! Keep reading for a German Shepherd puppy exercise chart and specific, step-by-step fun games to keep your new pup happy and healthy. Exercising puppies heavily too early in life may lead to joint damage. This is especially likely in large breeds with rapidly growing and heavily loaded joints, such as your GSD. High-Impact Activity to Avoid Jumping, especially from couches, furniture, or cars Twisting such as chasing a toy that wildly moves in many directions Exercising over hard or uneven ground especially sidewalks and asphalt Keep exercise short and frequent, as this is more beneficial than long, infrequent periods of activity. Stick to softer surfaces, like grass and dirt paths, while your pup is young and their bones are not fully fused. Most GSD owners simply want to take train their puppy to walk on a leash in the neighborhood and park without getting pulled down the street. There are three basic ways to communicate how you want your German Shepherd puppy to walk on a leash with you: the stopping method, the turning method, and the luring method. The Stopping Method Open the door, but only open the door if your dog is sitting. This step could take some time and practice. Once you both are out the door, have your dog sit again. You need to lock the door and your dog needs to sit for this. During your walk, have your dog sit for you at various times. When he does offer a tasty, high value, quick-to-eat treat. Now immediately start walking again and give the release cue. Stand still and wait until he sits. This could take a while. This is important, especially because one day your little pup will be large enough to injure you if they pull you along on the walk wildly! This will take lots of time and patience. But setting a strong and obedient walk foundation allows you to enjoy your walks more and maintain control over your large breed dog as they mature and grow stronger. The Turning Method Use the same steps as above to get outside your house and begin your walk, except instead of stopping and waiting on your dog, turn in the opposite direction and begin walking the other way. Quietly turn around and guide them along when they get a few steps ahead of you. You may also tire of turning. But stick with it. Either of these techniques takes plenty of patience and a strong mental character. But your dog loves to learn. Their mind is like a sponge at this young age, but they also lack obedience skills and an attention span. Use treats and toys to get your dog to follow you. The Treat Luring Method: Hold the treat at their eye level in front of them so they can see and smell the treat. Take one or two steps forward, having them follow the treat with their nose and eyes. They will probably keep following the treat. She loves them! Take a couple of steps forward while squeaking the toy. As they follow, keep stepping forward and squeaking the toy. After a few successful steps forward, let them play with the toy as their reward. Keep up this game to motivate them to follow you. Eventually, your dog gains confidence in their new surroundings and with your help and will walk on their own. Never allow your dog to run loose near traffic. Never unleash your dog in a new area. Never allow your dog to eat objects found on the ground. They could be poisonous! Never think a person running or someone on a bicycle sees your little pup. Puppies are quick moving and can dart in front of a moving person causing them to trip and fall. This can also injure your dog as they may fall on top of them or kick or step on them. Pup is distracted Remember that being outside with your dog is equivalent to you going to Disney Land! Give them a chance to develop their attention skills, or use the high value treats to make them pay attention to you. If you are limited in the places you can go, choose different routes so your dog gets to experience new smells and sights. The dog looks stressed or afraid Find quieter areas to walk in or use the lure and reward method to help them overcome their walking fears. Carry them home and end your walk. Next time, go a shorter distance and take less time. Use positive training and rewards to communicate. The best walking setup for a puppy is a no-pull harness that connects at two different points in the front and back. No-pull harnesses are great for introducing your puppy to structured walks while keeping them safe and happy. Need More Manners Training? Your GSD needs to learn more than just walking nicely. He also needs to learn all the basics of obedience. Use this free training guide to get started today! This activity is usually one of the longest and hardest to teach since you are competing with the sights and smells of the great outdoors! Stay patient, positive, and stick to your training. Sep 06, Puppies need exercise to develop healthy bones, muscles and hearts. Exercise goes a long way to help curb anxiety and behavior issues related to boredom. But you may have heard that too much exercise can be harmful. How much exercise is necessary, how much is too much, and what kinds of exercise should you be doing? As a general rule, your puppy knows best. Normal puppy play is okay, and you should never feel as though you should stop your puppy from playing on its own accord. Short walks are also okay, as long as your idea of a short walk isn't 3 miles every morning! Short games of fetch and tug are also okay. Fetch is especially hard on the body because most dogs rapidly accelerate to go after the ball and rapidly decelerate once they get to it, so good throws is plenty in conjunction with other acceptable exercises. Tug is also hard on the body, so minutes is plenty in conjunction with other acceptable exercises as well. Swimming is a great, low-impact exercise. Just make sure your puppy doesn't ingest too much water while swimming. It's also recommended that you not play fetch in the water because dogs can accidentally ingest a lot of water when retrieving toys thrown into bodies of water. Examples of exercises that are too rigorous for puppies are long hikes, running steps, long games of fetch, long walks, running, jogging, weight pull and pulling carts of any kind, wearing vests with anything over a few ounces in it for anything other than a short stroll, flyball, and inappropriate amounts of agility training. All of these things are stressful on soft, growing bones and joints and can result in hip and elbow dysplasia and musculoskeletal deformities, diseases and injuries. As a rule of thumb, don't exceed 5 minutes for each month of the puppy's age of acceptable exercise no more than twice a day. For instance, 15 minutes of exercise twice a day is ideal for a 3-month-old puppy, while 20 minutes twice a day is ideal for a 4-month-old puppy. As a general rule, you can start building up puppies to adult levels of exercise once they turn 9 months of age if they're not expected to grow over 25lbs. By a year they can be exercised as an adult as long as you properly build up their stamina. For medium and large breeds, you can begin to build them up to adult levels of exercise by 15 months and it's safe to exercise them as adults once they turn 18 months old. German Shepherd dogs will naturally travel in a cantering-lope rather than a slow walk. That means that it is imperative that you train your puppy early on how to walk on a leash by your side without pulling. German Shepherds are a powerful breed and are capable of dragging handlers who aren't strong enough to hold them back. Eliminate the possibility of a physical tug of war by relying on solid training instead. Remember, exercise is also great for keeping hip and elbow joints stabilized in German Shepherd Dogs. Many large breeds are known to suffer from hip and elbow problems later in life, but dysplasia seems to unfairly target the German Shepherd. Regular exercise can help to build muscle around joints to protect them. The more muscle, the less stress on the joint. Make sure you keep your puppies lean, well hydrated, and wait an hour or two after your puppy eats before exercise. If you stick by these rules, you lessen the chances of hip and elbow dysplasia, panosteitis, strains, sprains, ligament injuries, bloat, obesity, heart disease and arthritis. Also keep the temperature in mind and watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Stop exercise if your puppy no longer wants to play or stops to rest and everything should be fine. Beginners often have a lot of questions: how long should they walk with a German Shepherd, how often should they do it, and what are the rules of feeding and vaccination. Therefore, before the responsible purchase, it is important to get acquainted with the nuances of ownership. At what age can you walk a German Shepherd? Experts have different opinions about the age at which a German Shepherd can go for a walk. There are two polar positions, so owners should consult their breeder or veterinarian. Some experts, when asked how to properly educate the pet, argue that it is categorically not recommended to walk puppies before they reach 3 months old. This is due to the high vulnerability of puppies to infections, which they can catch while playing with other dogs during the period when routine vaccinations have not yet been done. Put napkins or gravel or sand on it. Keep a close eye on your puppy. The negative side of this approach is the increased likelihood of encountering puddles of urine at night even in adulthood. According to the opposite opinion, up to 2 months old puppies still have the immunity received from their mother, so you should start walking outside as early as possible. Increased production of vitamin D due to exposure to sunlight, preventing the development of rachitis. Frequent exposure to nature increases the production of general immunity. If you decide to walk your puppy from an early age, you must choose a small but clean area and prevent him from coming into contact with other animals, especially stray ones. Until the German Shepherd reaches the age of six months , you should carry him in your arms when walking up a flight of stairs. His spine is not yet strong enough, so sprains when going up and down are detrimental. How long should you walk The duration of a walk with a German Shepherd puppy should increase in increments. In the first days, minutes is enough to familiarize the dog with the world and empty the bowels and bladder, but you need to go out times a day. It is better to go out right after feeding. Further, the duration of time outside should be in accordance with age: three months — about half an hour, the puppy should definitely run; four months — from 40 minutes to 1 hour; at six months, the normal mode of walking is established — at least two hours, twice a day. If it is possible to walk longer, you should take advantage of the opportunity. You need to figure out how to walk your German Shepherd correctly. To do this, you need to follow a few tips. It is important to use every walk outside to teach your dog to potty outside the apartment or house. While the dog is still very young but is already used to having to pee outside, spontaneous but short walks at night are likely. Up to 6 months old, it is important to make sure that the dog does not jump over any obstacles. As with ladders, this harms the skeleton and back muscles. You should try to take your German Shepherd outdoors during daylight hours so that he can enjoy the sunlight. After exploring the nearest surroundings, you should decide where to walk for an extended period of time. Great if there is a park or square nearby where it is allowed to walk the dogs. It is also important to go to special doggy playgrounds. You need to give your pet some freedom to get to know other puppies and adult dogs. It allows: Control the movements of the dog and accustom the puppy to the leash. Helps in the initial stages of training. Prevents him from eating unhealthy food picked up off the ground. Provides safety when stray dogs appear. More mature dogs can be leashed to a collar. Answering the question of when you can put the collar on the puppy, many experienced breeders responded with a recommendation to do it as early as possible, so that the puppy got used to the foreign object initially. Before buying a collar or harness, it is important to pay attention to the material: Leather — is the most durable, suitable for walks and training, but it is recommended to replace it in rainy or snowy weather. Leather gets wet, stretches, and loses its durability from moisture; Tarpaulin — holds its shape in all conditions, but is prone to contamination and has a short lifespan; Synthetic — is versatile and does not have the negative qualities of the previous 2. To properly put on the harness or collar during the period of accustomization, you need to create a comfortable atmosphere for the puppy: calmly call by name, and offer a treat. Before buying, it is important to measure the pup. This will allow you to choose the optimal size collar, in which the German shepherd will feel comfortable, and walks will be a pleasure both for the pet and for its loving owner. David W. I admire German Shepherds. They are magnificent dogs! I have been dealing with dogs, namely German Shepherds, throughout my life. I have been working part-time as a dog trainer and instructor for about 5 years, dealing mainly with German Shepherds. So I know a bit about these animals. Therefore, I decided to share my knowledge and experience about this fantastic breed. If you need help with advice and care tips or want to know more about German Shepherd dogs, welcome to this blog. Puppies Establishing an efficient exercise routine for a German Shepherd puppy is extremely important for your GSD to live a healthy lifestyle. While there is no exact science to knowing your German Shepherd puppy exercise limits, it is best to slowly ease into a routine and your puppy will gain stamina over time. Dogs are creatures of habit and love a routine. Accordingly, if you normally walk your puppy first thing in the morning, your pup will start to expect and look forward to those morning walks as soon as you roll out of bed. Try and establish an exercise routine that you can maintain long term, so your puppy can grow to learn the routine. The American Kennel Club UK recommends two exercise sessions of 5 minutes per month of age during puppyhood 1. When Allie was a puppy, I found short walks multiple times a day worked well. I started Allie with short minute walks times a day as an 8-week-old puppy. This served two purposes, to get some of her energy out, as well as getting her used to walking on a leash. Finding the Right Length of Walks for Your Puppy Although there are many recommendations as to how long to walk your German Shepherd puppy, it is best to look to your puppy for clues on its limits. Start with 10 minutes, 2 times a day. If you find your puppy is still a ball on energy increase it to 15 minutes, or you can add in a third minute walk. You want to find the walking time that is right for your individual GSD puppy as all puppies are all different and will require different amounts of exercise. Keep in mind, that it can be dangerous to push your German Shepherd puppy beyond his or her limits at a young age. If your German Shepherd puppy show signs of being tired or exhausted, stop the walk immediately and allow your pup to rest. Final Thoughts Establishing a solid exercise routine for your German Shepherd puppy is an important step in establishing the framework for a healthy lifestyle. In addition to walks, I would include short play sessions in the yard with a ball or play with toys in the house as well. The most important thing with walking a German Shepherd puppy is to start with short walks and play sessions and build on that process as your puppy grows. How much exercise does your German Shepherd puppy need? Your puppy does not need nearly the amount of exercise an adult dog does. Adult German Shepherds require two hours or more of exercise every day. And within that time, the duration of exercise depends on intensity. Your dog would not spend an entire two hours performing high-intensity exercises unless in formal training. A typical routine would include 20 to 40 minutes of rigorous exercises such as jogging, vigorous playing, or other activities. Some examples are practicing Shutzhund, preparing for herding or agility trials, or learning search and rescue. The remainder of the time dedicated to exercise, you should spend on training, ongoing socialization, and moderate- and low-intensity activities. You can include warmup and cool down in a moderate or leisurely walk. Keep in mind any puppy who is not full-grown does not need to engage in rigorous exercise for extended periods. What is the five-minute per month rule? However, one rule that makes sense as a loose guideline, is to exercise your pup for five minutes per month of age. You can do an exercise session twice a day. If you bring a GSD puppy home at ten weeks old, your exercise guideline would tell you to work with her for about .A six-month-old puppy , which you may be tempted to treat as a miniature adult, should still only get about half an hour of exercise twice a day. By 10 or 12 months , your Shepherd is up to his quota of nearly two hours split into multiple sessions during a day. However, you should still limit jumping and long-distance running until you are sure your puppy has finished growing. How do you know when your Shepherd puppy has stopped growing? This closure signifies your dog has finished growing and can engage in exercises that may be too strenuous for bones that are softer when lengthening. Once growth plates close and the joints no longer have laxity from extreme youth, you can take exercise to the next level. How can you tell if your Shepherd has stopped growing without a radiograph? According to Animalso. Use particular caution with certain working lines as they may not reach full maturity until the age of three years. Even though Czech and Eastern German lines have lower incidences of hip dysplasia than show dogs, you still need to treat their growing bones with care. Common beliefs notwithstanding, if you neuter a German Shepherd at a young age, the decrease in testosterone generally will delay growth plate closure. You will notice that neutered male German Shepherds are often taller than their unaltered counterparts. Therefore, assume if you neuter your dog, he will physically mature a little later. Mentally he will mature worlds ahead. How does hip dysplasia affect German Shepherd puppies? Hip dysplasia is a growth abnormality that affects most large-breed dogs and many small breeds as well. As you likely know, the hip is a ball and socket joint. The ball is the head of the thigh bone or femur, and the socket is the acetabulum or cup in the pelvis. In dysplasia of the joint, the femoral head grows at a different rate than the socket. Rather quickly, the femoral head no longer fits correctly or congruently within the socket, affecting function and causing scrapes across the protective cartilage, according to ACVS. Inappropriate looseness of the joint exacerbates the condition by allowing too much movement within the joint. Depending on the severity, affected puppies and dogs may show mild to life-altering symptoms. Signs of joint laxity or looseness usually occur first, although they may go unnoticed. Visible space between the head of the femur and the pelvis — Sometimes you can feel the excessive space when you cannot see it. Crying out in pain — Even if it has not progressed yet to degenerative joint disease, joint looseness can be painful. Abnormal gait — Your puppy may appear to bunny hop in the rear legs or exhibit other gait abnormalities that you would not classify as obvious lameness. Lame — Your dog will show lameness if she is in pain. Difficulty getting up or laying down — Your puppy may even show consistent reluctance to get up. Decreased interest in playing, especially if it involves running. Exercise intolerance — Your pup will play, but not for as long as you would expect. Maybe your dog seems to tire easily. Difficulty negotiating stairs — Joint looseness greatly affects the athleticism of your dog. Will not sit square — Many trainers advocate you enforce your dog sitting square as a sign of true obedience. Dogs with hip issues, they are unable to sit comfortably unless their hind legs are to one side or the other. Joint laxity can be difficult to judge in young dogs. Puppies have a greater degree of laxity than adult dogs to accommodate growth. Joint laxity should limit how long you walk a German Shepherd puppy , especially one under six months old. Joint laxity means your puppy will experience significant instability when walking, predisposing her to stumble and fall. Signs of osteoarthritis mostly manifest as pain, dysfunction of the joints, decreased range of motion, and even grinding sounds as the leg moves. Degenerative joint changes, believe it or not, can occur in puppies only several months old. German Shepherds do not typically have a problem with obesity. Although it seems counterintuitive, too much nutrition is not an ideal thing for the GSD. If a large-breed dog grows too quickly as a puppy, he can be more vulnerable to hip dysplasia if he already carries the genes. The dilemma comes with balancing exercise requirements and nutrition, so you have a happy and fit puppy who is not overweight but also does not overexert herself. How does exercise affect hip dysplasia? Although hip dysplasia has a large hereditary basis, over exercising a puppy can exacerbate the problem in a dog who might not otherwise develop any symptoms. It is important not to allow your puppy to run excessively or jump during her growing months. Moreover, if your puppy has excessively lax joints, overstretching during long and strenuous running or launching and landing for jumps can cause direct injury to the hips and surrounding soft tissue. Your puppy can also injure her growth plates. An X-ray at an early age gives you an idea if your puppy is already showing the effects of DJD or degenerative joint disease. Your veterinarian may be able to advise you further if your exercise program is too strenuous for your puppy based on any changes in the joints. How do you know your puppy overexerted himself? You may occasionally find that your puppy overdoes it. Perhaps you took him to a birthday party for his Labrador friend, and you did not have the heart to break up their play session. Most of the time, a play date that gets out of hand or a walk that runs over the anticipated time allotment will not cause any permanent damage. You can assess your pup the following day for signs of overexertion and know to take it exceptionally easy for the next day or two. Listen to your puppy Although you should leash-train your GSD at a young age, starting as soon as you first bring her home, there is much to be said about freeform exercise. The biggest benefit of your puppy exercising a good part of her time in the early month off-leash is she can self-regulate her activity. You will notice when puppies are tired or become sore, they will stop dead in their tracks. Make sure your puppy is in a safe environment, and she can engage in fairly unrestricted exercise on her own. When you are walking your puppy on a leash, under no circumstances should you push her to go beyond the point where you are dragging her, or she sits down and refuses to move on? You may have to carry her the remainder of the journey. As your German Shepherd approaches adolescence at five to seven months old, you will have to monitor his exercise more because what he can do will begin to exceed what he should do. Running over rolling terrain for miles or training strenuously for pursuit work is not ideal for an immature Shepherd and can be potentially harmful. Best length of time to walk a German Shepherd puppy: you know best! When facing the question of how long should you walk your German Shepherd, use the rough guidelines of five minutes per month of age a couple of times a day. Otherwise, allow your pup to dictate her level of tolerance for playing and romping. You can spend additional time with your puppy building a bond through affection and play, while still limiting duration. Your pup will need some time during the day to herself and sleep. This video shows the progression of a puppy and how his exercise abilities change. It perfectly illustrates how the young Shepherd dictates how much exercise he can tolerate. Notice, in the beginning, the interaction with his owner is a large part dependent on easy contact. As the puppy progresses in age, he gradually attempts more. If you watch puppies even three and four months old engaged in self-directed play, their actions are marked by frequent pauses to rest or think about the next move. Rarely will you see a German Shepherd laying still, but as in the video, puppies will take time to rest if left to their own devices. Swimming is a great form of exercise, but not all German Shepherds love water. This video shows that just because your German Shepherd puppy is not on a leash does not mean you are not walking her. Training should take up a good portion of your walks or exercise sessions, whether on- or off-leash. As much of a brilliant pupil as this puppy is, her session should not be longer than 15 minutes. Notice her yawn, which can be a sign of tension or a wandering mind, indicating the exercise should move to something else or stop.

The health and care of our labradoodles is very important to us and we feed them a variety of top qualtity organic dog foods and meats. We have a small number of dogs that we keep in our home and others that are in approved, caring guardian family homes nearby where they can receive love and attention from individual families. They are so sweet, and loving and both of them have such calm temperaments. They are also both super smart! We would definitely get a third labradoodle from them. Jessica Weston a year ago I think the dogs here are coming from very different circumstances. He has a sweet temperament and has come so far, but is still very very anxious. Mike Potter a year ago I was really surprised to see negative reviews! We got our female puppy Bella the day before thanksgiving last year November .This breed is the most incredible intelligent and well mannered that we have ever had. With Covid, the pick up process was a bit strange, but that was nothing that anyone had any control over. If you are considering an Australian Labradoodle, we would highly recommend this breeder. In a few years we will be going back to get a companion for Bella! We constantly talk about getting another one so our boy has a sibling. Communication was easy and we picked him up from the airport. Our dog is family and even goes to school with me! No hesitations here. Bj Eskandari All they care is making money. Whitney Sutherland My Rooney is my best friend—everything I could ever want and more! Kaitlin Kirk 2 years ago If it was possible to give stars we would! We spoke with Sherie through the whole process and she was absolutely wonderful! She answered all questions we had and helped us match with our dream dog, Nash! Will only get our dogs here moving forward! Thanks again for surpassing all expectations and incredible service!! We got our sweet Chloe 6 months ago. She has been such a blessing to our family and we could not be more over the moon. Ours is 2 years old. Great dog. Stacy Bleiweis 2 years ago This is a puppy mill breeder. We got our first puppy and had to send her back a day later. Broke my kids heart. We visited our vet and they checked her out and the dog had a severe heart murmur out of 6. Manor Lake sent us another puppy that they were going to keep to breed. This poor dog has chronic bladder infections and gastric issues and has vomited all her life. She is now .The vet has done multiple surgeries to try to fix her and she has been on a lifetime of antibiotics. Manor Lake is a total farce. The home page is a picture taken of the internet. Randy Holbrook 2 years ago I just saw there were some 1 star reviews on Manor Lake so thought I would throw my two cents into the ring. I have purchased two labradoodles from Manor Lake. My oldest is turning 12 and the other 4. They are the best dogs I have ever encountered. Extremely well behaved, well mannered and did not take much effort to train. I never really looked too much into the experience of picking them up because I never thought that was an important factor in judging the breed of dog. I have nothing but positive things to say about the breed and breeder. I would highly recommend anyone do themselves the favor of purchasing one of these amazing dogs from Manor Lake! Magdalena Ortiz 2 years ago We are so very happy with our beautiful dog Felix! He has a wonderful temperament, is very smart, eager to learn, and very loving. I'm really impressed with the quality of his hypoallergenic coat! I've had no issues with allergies, even though I'm highly allergic to cats and other dogs! Sherrie was wonderful to us during the process, and continues to be available for support whenever we need her. I would highly recommend Manor Lake Labradoodles. Giggle Gaggle 2 years ago On one hand, Manor Lake Labradoodles did a good job with our dog - documentation was good, the puppy was healthy when we picked it up, and continued to be healthy many months later. On the other hand, you should know this is a Texas breeder with a distribution point in Washington State. The dogs are shipped up and spend virtually no time in WA before pickup. We have several friends who also have dogs from them and were surprised to learn that their dogs were from Texas, not the Pacific Northwest. All of them thought they were buying from a local breeder. Fidencio Saldana 2 years ago I was a bit surprised by the bad reviews. Our puppy was flown to us to Boston back in August. Everyone was very professional from folks on the phone to the two people that flew in with our puppy. There were 3 other puppies that flew in with ours- all looked healthy. We now have a loving , healthy 7 month old puppy! One person stated that the profile picture is fake? I personally went there 7 years ago to see the litter my amazing Charlie came from. These puppies are so loved! We adore our medium red labradoodle so much that four years later we bought his nephew. Both are so smart, fun, affectionate, and almost non shedding. Brittany Osman 2 years ago Worst experience ever. Our dog came to us afraid of everything. He would hide underneath the couch everyday and didn't act like a normal joyful puppy. I contacted Manor Lake and they ignored me. They initially didn't send us any emails after our deposit. When we drove hours to pick up our puppy on a weekday they quickly handed him to us and had us out of the door in 5 minutes. I have friends who have doodles from other breeders and there is night and day difference in personalities. I have also contacted other breeders with these concerns and they reply saying that his behavior is not normal. In my opinion Manor Lake shouldn't be allowed to breed. Brandi Kolmer 3 years ago Beware this place is a puppy mill and doesn't care for their animals. We were told we would get a vet certificate when we got our puppy and have followed up via phone and email multiple times and still haven't got it. It's been well over a month. They are just avoiding us because they sent us home with a puppy who has had a horrible ear fungus. We have spent a ton of money and time trying to clear it up. Incredibly disappointed such horrible people exist to just profit off these beautiful animals without concern for their health. Aaron was so helpful and answered all of our questions about the breed. They really care about their dogs. Ellen Waltzman 3 years ago Fantastic customer service! Kim, the owner went above and beyond to help us flew across the country to make sure my husband did not have an allergic reaction to her pups. Our dog is unbelievable; healthy, happy, loving, smart, and absolutely gorgeous! I have recommended Manor Lake Labradoodles to many people and they are equally satisfied with their experience and their dogs. We had the best experince addopting a dog from Manor Lake. Very kind and helpful! Especially as we needed a lot of papers bringing her to Switzerland. We would only adopt from Manor Lake. Our Ally is the perfect match for us. Coudn't be happier. Gloria Lastra 3 years ago We love Manor Lake because they work hard to breed quality and genuine Australian Labradoodles that bring joy and happiness to many families. Thank You so much for all your work. Stay away from this breeder! After placing a deposit with Kim she failed to accommodate a day for pick up of our puppy we placed a deposit on. I highly suggest looking elsewhere for another breeder. They gave me my Wonderful Baby Girl!!! Kathy Burke 3 years ago My first Manor Lake pup is almost 11 years old, he is the best dog ever. They are friendly and professional and sometimes even have puppies that are available without waiting for months you just have to ask them! We got our dog sailor there. He has been the best dog we've ever owned no shedding, wonderful temperament, and such a loving dog. I would highly recommend this breeder they really know what they're doing. Bringing a pug puppy home is not far from bringing a child home or having someone to live with you. Pugs are living creatures with personalities of their own. Some pug breeders offer pug mix puppies for sale in PA and you have to reach out to them as soon as they post their listing as there are many pet owners that are interested. Below are some of the steps you can take to help you select the perfect pug puppy for your home and choosing the right pug breeders. Create a Comprehensive List of Breeders Your search for adorable pug puppies will begin with a list of reputable breeders. Finding the best pug breeder will solve more than half of any future problems you might have with the pug. Instead, try to build a list of your options. Be specific with what you are looking for. This can be the need for crate training or an assurance of a health guarantee. This allows you to choose not only the best pug puppies but also enables you to get the best deal you can get. Once you have a list of at least five 5 pug breeders, you can talk to each of them and figure out which breeder has the best pug puppy for you. Identifying the Best Pug Breeder Now that you have a list, you can set appointments for each of the pug breeders. Talk to the pug breeders and ask them important questions. Of course, while pug breeders value owners who are enthusiastic about getting the best puppies home, be respectful with the manner you ask your questions. Always try to build a relationship and ask for information in the context of understanding how to take care of the pug you are about to bring home. Some buyers would indicate their need for the puppies to undergo crate training and would seek a health guarantee. Do your best to ask for these details when you talk to pug breeders. To properly identify a pug breeder who follows ethical practices in breeding pug puppies, look for these small signs or signals that they are legit: Legitimate Breeders Volunteer Information. Check out their listing and see if they are providing complete information about the puppy. This means that if there are issues with the puppy, they will volunteer the information. Do not fall for big claims like the puppy coming a champion sired pug without proof. Take what the breeder is saying with a grain of salt unless proof is established. They will be upfront about the total cost of the transaction and will not include any hidden fees. Legitimate Breeders Value a Vet Check Since part of any breeding program is the vet check, a good pug breeder will not shy away if you want to bring a vet along with you. In fact, it will be their delight since a third party can confirm the health status of their adorable pug puppies. How do I Identify a Healthy Puppy? Check if the gums of the adorable puppies are healthy pink and that their nose does not close when they inhale. Check the head and the hip for soft spots. With the pug breed, hip dysplasia is a common physical illness that needed to be detected at the earliest symptoms. There are good places to identify if a puppy has health issues. Confirm with the breeder if the first shots were already given and also dewormed. Legitimate Breeders Follow Age Guidelines The safest time frame for pups to leave the litter is after at least 8 weeks. It is not an ethical practice to release pups before this time. If the adorable puppies were released before the 8th-week mark, it will have a damaging impact on the health of the puppy. Good breeders will even wait until the 12th week before the puppy is released. Look for Guarantees A good breeder offers a health guarantee as a practice, even with other pets. This assures the new owners that the puppies are vet checked and health tested. Knowing if the pug puppy is family raised can be a good guarantee, too. A new puppy should be released with health clearances that will enable them to grow and mature into adult dogs. Life Span Did You Know? The Pug, or Pug Dog, is famous for its flat-faced appearance and large, soulful eyes. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article. Email: rockvalepuppies gmail. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time. Please visit our website - www. I was rescued from a puppy mill. I am shy because I have not been around a lot of people or lived in a home as a pet. I have spent my life in a barn, a shed or a cage. The best home for me has people who have dog experience who can help with my training and acclimating to the outside world. The people in my new home should be able to teach me the skills I need to be a great pet: walking on a lead, house training, and socializing. They are checking me out and making sure I am healthy. Hopefully, I will find my new family that will help me to understand that I am a cherished family pet, not just an animal to be used to make money. Sweetly Retired Stormie G. We take so much pride in our doodles. They are the funniest, smartest, cutest, little guys, so much personality. Bred for their wonderful temperament, intuitive nature and overall character; they are non-shedding and don't carry doggie odors. They undergo temperament testing and a host of socialization opportunities are provided as grands come and go, neighbors drop by for cuddles, kitchen noises, loud televisions, children running about, birds singing and dogs barking; extra cuddles, visits by the other doodle family members and on and on. All of our dogs live here in the house with us. Guardian puppies live with their own loving families but visit often. Mama doodles are whelped here and baby doodles are appropriately exposed to a busy family lifestyle. All of our doodles receive the best in health care, as puppies themselves, before breeding, during and after, because we quite simply just love them to pieces and they deserve it. german shepherd puppies for sale nevada - Town and country cut Short cut You will also have to bear in mind that some of these cuts will be much shorter. If you live in a cold climate or a hot climate, ensure you have the right protection for your dog. Our article on dressing dogs for winter shows you how to do this in an appropriate way. Lion cut The lion cut is probably the best known and most extravagant of all the poodle haircuts. The dog's limbs are hairless, with only a pompom around the front and back paws. The tail should be rounded off and the chest, stomach and head should be left with hair. It is the most widely used haircut in competitions and dog shows where is is also known as the Continental cut. The lion cut's elaborate style makes it impressive, but also takes a lot of time and effort not to mention experience to get right. There are other cuts on dogs called the lion cut, such as one for the Shih Tzu , but they will look different according to the specific breed. Image: National Geographic 2. English saddle cut The English cut is very similar to the lion cut. The difference lies in an additional pompom on the hind legs, and the pelvic area being left at the same length as the chest. It still shares the long ears and tightly wound curls on the body. Both are considered some of the most popular Poodle haircuts among groomers. Image: poodleforum 3. Dutch cut The Dutch cut is one of the most popular in dog contests and expositions. Unlike previous styles, this one is for those who are looking for a uniform style with no differences in length of the dog's coat. It's notable above all for the tail ending in a cute pompom. Image: poodleforum 4. Modern cut The modern cut for poodles is probably the most suitable for owners who love following recent trends and enjoy watching canine beauty competitions. This is also known as the Scandinavian cut or European cut in some sectors, especially in the United States of America. It seeks to achieve a careful and professional finish, without being as exaggerated as the aforementioned styles. It is an aesthetic cut, yet at the same time it is very natural. It follows the shape of the body, emphasizing the ears and tail as much as the head. This is a very trendy cut for Miniature Poodles, and it isn't difficult to work out why. This haircut really makes your poodle look like a puppy. This style doesn't aim to achieve a defined or sharp-looking finish. On the contrary, the fur should look natural and fresh. The American Kennel Club claims there should be a pompom on the end of the tail. It is another of the most popular Poodle haircuts. Image: temporary-secretary 6. Summer cut Many dog owners wonder if it's bad to give their dogs a haircut during the summer. Not all dogs should follow the example of the Poodle, which is a breed that adapts perfectly to different haircuts and styles. Summer is a hot period that makes your beloved poodle get dirtier than usual - especially if you take it to the beach or go for a walk in the woods. Therefore, giving it a summer cut is a good idea: You will help to keep it cool while achieving some interesting aesthetic finishes, as shown below. Winter Poodle cuts tend to leave more hair on the dog to help insulate them from the cold. Image: poodleforum. Cupcake cut This haircut is not very well known, possibly because some people think it provides a strange look once it is done. The cupcake cut is notable for leaving the ears absolutely rounded as a result of being thoroughly styled. Not all styles will involve Poodle face cuts to be so dramatic, but we think it is quite stylish. This Poodle cut is also notable for the shape of its head - which ends in a point - which bears a clear resemblance to a delicious muffin. Image: huxtablethepoodle. Teddy bear cut The teddy bear cut is increasingly popular among long-haired dog breeds. This finish must be done with scissors, and it requires hands with experience in styling poodles. The hair should be left mid-length so that the poodle's curls can be seen clearly. This gives a sweet and rounded finish which makes it look like a bear, as the name suggests. Make sure you know how often to bathe a poodle in order for their fur to look gorgeous at all times. Image: yiral 9. This style can work for any type of Poodle, but is particularly common with Standard or Miniature Poodles. Its defining feature is that it leaves the legs hairy and cylinder-shaped. The body hair, on the other hand, is cut shorter, which accentuates the density of the leg hairs. The head and ears have a rounded finish. Image: najupets .Short cut While it's not very common to see a short-haired poodle, it remains an aesthetic option that will avoid knots, tangles and dirt building up in its coat. This Poodle cut may be a good option in warmer countries. It is also a good option for those who can't go to the dog stylist as often as they would like to. This style can work just as well on a Toy Poodle as it will a Standard Poodle. However, you will need to bear in mind that it may cause the dog to become cold. Either avoid this cut in cold climates or winter months. If you still prefer a shorter cut, ensure you have a doggie jacket for them to stay protected. Image: notastandardpoodle-gregg. The problem is there is no standardized style guide for cutting a Poodle's hair. In different countries, regions and even individual dog groomers , there is debate over the correct name for some of the terms. This can understandably cause confusion for groomers. Clients may come in with a specific idea of how they want their Poodle cut, but are unable to explain the style to the groomer. The best thing for you to do is to decide on what you want before hand and locate a picture of the Poodle cut you want. You can even take this article with you and decide which type of haircut will best work for your dog. Relying on the name of a certain Poodle cut may cause confusion or frustration, so it is best to be on the safe side. Send us a photo of your dog! The poodle's coat is its most distinguishing feature, and it's essential to keep it looking its best. Grooming is key, and a good haircut can make all the difference! As your dog's fur grows out, it can become tangled and unruly, making for a frustrating appearance. Your poodle is an elegant dog that deserves to be taken care of with impeccable style. There are many different styles of haircuts a poodle can have, and it can be tough to decide which one is right for your pup. It can be hard to know where to start with so many options available. Don't worry; we're here to help! In this article, we'll take a look at seven trendy hairstyles your poodle can rock on his walk. The Lion Cut Let's start with one of the most popular poodle haircuts of all, the lion cut. Sometimes referred to as the "puppy cut," this hairstyle takes advantage of your poodle's long fur to give them a mane-like appearance. The dog's limbs are left hairless, except for a pompom around the tail, front and rear paws. A perfect look for poodles who want to show off their luxurious locks! This hairstyle will last a while since the short hairs on your poodle's face and body will help prevent matting. You should still brush your pup regularly to keep his coat clean and healthy! The Puppy Cut Another popular haircut for poodles and other small dogs like the Yorkshire Terriers is the "puppy cut. While the fur looks a little longer around the face, the haircut mimics a human infant rather than a furry animal. With this cut, your pup will feel extra comfortable as he goes about his day! While many owners opt for this style as it doesn't require as much maintenance as other cuts, it's easy to get tired of the same look over time. Your poodle will still need regular brushing to remove tangles and maintain his healthy coat. Teddy Bear Cut Do you love the look of a teddy bear? The teddy bear cut is another popular choice for poodle haircuts. It's an adorable style that looks kind of like your pup has a bushy mane! This technique leverages the poodle's tiny round eyes and creates the illusion of a furry face. The hair should be cut uniformly at mid-length with a rounded shape to the top of the head. It's important not to cut the body fur too short, as we need the poodle's curls to be seen clearly for this cut. The fur around your pup's paws is left untouched, so it appears thick and full, giving your poodle the appearance of having tiny bear paws! These cuts are extremely popular with older dogs who won't have to worry about frequent brushing or bathing. Summer Cut Although you want your poodle to look cute, you also want them to be comfortable! In the summer, it's hot and humid, and your pup will thank you for cutting his hair shorter. The summer cut is an excellent choice for those sweltering days. In this style, all of the hair on your poodle's body is trimmed very short, except for a small tuft around the tail and large pompoms around the legs. This style is easy to maintain and will help your pup stay comfortable in the summer heat. Dutch Cut Known for its frequent appearance in dog shows, the dutch cut is a great choice for poodles that want a unique look. This creates a "Mohawk" look that is sure to turn heads! The tail can also be left long or cut short to complement your pup's look. The face and paws are the only parts of the body shaved, so you get a little bit of extra grooming time! This cut requires regular brushing to keep your poodle's coat clean and tangle-free. English Saddle Cut The English saddle cut is a popular choice for poodles with longer coats. This haircut is similar to the dutch cut, but it explicitly leaves more hair on the top of your poodle's head. The face and legs are also shaved, but a little more fur is left on the body to create an overall rounded look for this cut. This cut is great-looking but will require regular brushing and bathing to prevent mats from forming. Short Cut This is a prevalent choice for poodles with shorter hair, as it is low-maintenance and easy to groom. In this style, all of the hair on your dog's body is trimmed short, except for the ears. The fur around his face and paws is also shaved short, giving your pup a clean, polished look. This style is perfect for owners who want their dogs to look neat and tidy with minimal effort! Although this style doesn't require as much grooming as other styles, it's still necessary to brush your poodle regularly as the fur grows back. Things To Know Before Grooming Your Poodle Now that you know a little bit about the different types of poodle haircuts, there are a few things to keep in mind before you get started. All poodles require regular brushing Regardless of the style of haircut you choose. Brushing helps to remove excess hair and keep your poodle's coat healthy. It also helps to stimulate blood flow to the skin, which is important for natural oil production. Be sure to give your pup a good bath before grooming him, It would be best to wash your dog too often, but bathing him before grooming will help remove loose fur and leave your poodle's coat soft and shiny. A lot of groomers also recommend giving your pup a good brush after bathing to remove any excess hair, as it can clog drains or just be tough to clean up. Grooming should be a fun experience for your dog Please don't force your poodle to do anything they don't want to! Teaching them that grooming is a positive, relaxing experience will help the process go by more quickly and smoothly. Start grooming early If your dog is still a puppy, it might be a good idea to introduce him to the grooming process early on. This will help him get used to the sights, sounds, and smells of a groomer's salon, and he'll be more likely to cooperate when it's time for his actual haircut. We recommend sending your dog to a professional groomer for his haircut. This will ensure that your pup gets the best possible cut and that you don't accidentally cut him too short or leave any bald patches. Most groomers offer various services, so be sure to ask what they include in their price. Generally, a groomer will begin by bathing your dog and then trimming his nails, cleaning his ears, and starting to cut the hair according to your specifications. The process will continue with a blow-dry, and then your pup will be ready for his final trim. Poodles are known to have a lot of hair, so it can take a long time to groom them completely. You should expect the process to take up to two hours or more. You should consider many factors when choosing a groomer, including experience, pricing, and location. With so many options available, learn how your poodle can look like anything from a plush toy to elegant royalty! Teddy Bear Cut The teddy bear cut is a popular trim for poodles and other long-haired breeds. With this look, your poodle has longer hair on her face for a soft, rounded "teddy bear" appearance, and the rest of the fur on her body is cut at a shorter, uniform length throughout. Talk about cuddly cuteness! Summer Cut Because poodles have a single coat, they can enjoy the luxury that comes with it: the summer cut. Known as one of the most low-maintenance poodle haircuts, the summer cut is a practical haircut option that keeps your poodle's fur short so she stays comfortable in hot weather. So if you're looking to cut your hair to beat the heat in the summer, you and your poodle can rock shorter hairdos together! Puppy Cut No matter your poodle's age, you can seemingly turn back time with the puppy cut. Also a popular choice among poodle parents, the puppy cut is a simple, natural-looking trim that leaves your dog with an evenly cut length, typically 1 to 2 inches, all over. This is a highly modifiable look, so consult your groomer for a length that best fits your and your dog's preference and lifestyle. Continental Cut The continental cut is a glamorous and traditional hairstyle often worn by poodle show dogs. With this look, your poodle's face, throat, feet, and part of the tail are shaved. This look is characterized by full hair on the rib cage and chest, pom poms of fur on the tail, ankles, and hips, as well as a banded topknot on the head. German Trim Looking for a haircut that looks fancy but not too fancy? The German trim uses the power of angles to give your poodle a sharp profile. The hair on your furry friend's legs is left long, while the hair on the body and ears is cut short. This is a great option not only if your poodle is more active but also if your pup is prone to ear infections or ear matting. Modern Cut The modern cut is an elegant hairstyle that combines aesthetics with your poodle's natural features. This cut keeps the hair on the body short, accentuating your poodle's shape. The fur on the head, ears, and tail is left longer to create a fluffy appearance. When your dog has such curly, coarse locks, you may wonder how many trips to the groomer you and your poodle may be making. Poodles and poodle-crosses also go through a coat change in the first year of life, so they need to be groomed more often," says Danna Alexander, owner of Prestige Dog Grooming School. To keep mats and tangles at bay, it's best to brush your poodle at least two to three times a week. The Kennel Cut sometimes called a Sporting Trim follows these same rules, but with a few modifications. And their top knot is left as long as possible, while rounded and shaped by the groomer. Face, feet, tail, and neck shaving are optional but are hallmarks of the breed. The kennel cut is a modified version of a show groom that allows for easier day-to-day upkeep. This trim is known by several names: the Pom-pom Trim, Miami trim, and Vlown trim. Things get confusing with all these different names. Pompoms on legs keep the poodle style while a short body keep the cut easy to maintain. Medium or long topknot. Base of the tail is shaved for easy maintenance and cleanliness. German Trim A much more stylish cut over the Kennel cut, but for those dogs that get constant ear infections or ear matting. This trim is generally hand-scissored to create sharp angles to show off how pretty the dog is. The ears are shaved, either with a short 10 blade or sometimes even shorter with a 5 or 7. This trim also has no tail poof, but is a favorite for more active dogs. Short tail keeps things very easy to keep brushed and clean. Shaved ears, perfect for swimmers or dogs that get ear infections. Longer shaped legs for style, but can be taken quite short. Shorter body with longer legs keep the haircut simple but flashy. Many owners make modifications based on personal preference. And most prefer a cute, round head more akin to a doodle. This is another trim that wears many names — The Teddy trim, Lab trim, Lagotto trim, Retriever trim, etc… This style is as versatile as the dog that wears it. Legs are kept short to match the body style. Fluffy nose to make a cute face. Continental Trim This is the stand-out groom for Poodles. And for adult dogs this is the AKC standard groom and most prominent at dog shows. Be warned, maintaining this groom requires a lot of time and patience, and is not recommended for the average owner. So why is this the AKC standard? The idea is Poodles are a water-retrieving breed, and their malleable coat texture lends itself to optimizing their performance. Just like the body of a race car is bent and formed to reduce wind resistance and maximize speed, every part of the Continental Poodle Groom was given a purpose. Balls of fur around the legs are meant to keep joints warm, to improve mobility and endurance. The back half of the body is shaved short, to improve mobility when water retrieving. The face is cut short in order to maximize vision and stop debris getting stuck on their snout. Fur is left on the tip of the tail to avoid frost bite. Shaved rear for the dog to not be bogged down in the water while retrieving. Pompoms keep joints warm in cold water. The hindquarters are shaved with pompons optional on the hips. The legs are shaved, leaving bracelets on the hindlegs and puffs on the forelegs. There is a pompon on the end of the tail. The entire shaven foot and a portion of the shaven foreleg above the puff are visible. The rest of the body is left in full coat but may be shaped in order to insure overall balance. In all clips the hair of the topknot may be left free or held in place by elastic bands. The hair is only of sufficient length to present a smooth outline. This is the only area where elastic bands may be used. Want to learn more? We have a full picture guide on 31 haircut styles and trims for several different breeds. They are not purebreds like their Boxer or Rottweiler parents The main colors of the Boxweiler coats are fawn, black, brindle, white, and brown. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. These pups have short coats, though they are still moderate shedders. They are not hypoallergenic dogs. Boxweilers need at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. The Boxweiler may prefer to be mostly around adults and older kids who know how to play gently. Boxweilers can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. Boxweiler History The Boxweiler is believed to have been bred sometime in the s by crossing Boxers and Rottweilers together. What we do know is that both the Boxer and Rottweiler breeds have great histories. The ancestors of modern Boxers were used for many tasks, from hunting to guarding and herding cattle. This breed served as messenger dogs in World War I, carrying supplies and acting as guard and attack dogs. Rotties were often used to pull carts and served as guard dogs. Boxweilers are fairly likely to inherit many of the traits that have made their parent breeds so revered throughout history. The Rottweiler was inducted later in .Boxweiler Size As the Boxweiler is a mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to its size. That said, as a mix between Boxer and Rottweiler parents, you can expect the Boxweiler to be on the larger side. Most weigh in at 70 to pounds and range in height from 21 to 27 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger than normal. Boxweiler Personality Boxweilers are very loving and loyal dogs with lively personalities. This usually means they love running around and playing games like fetch with their pet parents. Even with their high energy, they are also affectionate and love to cuddle inside the house with their human counterparts. These large pooches are working dogs and enjoy fulfilling that purpose in one way or another. That means they can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. They will bark or alert their owners at the first sign of trouble. These dogs do best with early training to curb any unwanted bad habits. They can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They also tend to latch on to one family member most of all, though they can get along with others in the house. The Boxweiler may be best suited for larger families with larger homes rather than small apartments. Boxweiler Health The Boxweiler mixed breed is predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Boxer and the Rottweiler also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems Boxweilers suffer from include: joint dysplasia. This will encourage him and keep him engaged throughout the training process. This applies to all breeds and not just the Rottweiler Boxer Mix. The basic commands you can teach your Boxweiler puppy include come, stay, and sit. Never give up on any command. Otherwise, they might see themselves as the pack leader. Both Boxers and Rottweilers have the potential to be stubborn , so you need to be firm but kind. Socializing your Rottweiler Boxer Mix is also an essential part of training. This will help your puppy to get used to different people, places and situations. Your pup should not become scared where he sees strange things. You should also allow him to meet different animals during those daily walks. Proper socialization will allow him to learn good manners when he meets people and other animals. Exercise Needs The Boxer Rottweiler Mix is a result of two energetic dog breeds with a working background, so you can expect your pup to have lots of energy. They can gain weight quickly if their exercise needs are not met. You should take your Boxweiler out for walks at least twice a day. He also needs a fenced-in yard to move and play around in. They also love playing with other canines, provided they are well socialized. Being intelligent and playful, your Boxweiler also needs mental stimulation in the form of interactive dog toys. However, they also need proper grooming. The Rottweiler Boxer Mix is a moderate shedder and needs to be brushed at least two to three times a week. Although Boxweilers have short hair, they shed moderately throughout the year. These dogs require brushing in order to keep their rough coat in tiptop condition. Due to their self-grooming potential, they can stay clean for some time. However, bathing should still be done at least once per month. Trim their nails carefully and clean their ears as needed. Their diet must meet their nutrition needs. Select a high quality dog food that is specifically made for large and energetic dogs. Make sure to feed your pooch only two to three times each day. Avoid free feeding your pup as this may lead to obesity. To prevent joint issues and to maintain coat and skin health, give them probiotics and wild Alaskan salmon oil. Your Boxweiler also needs fresh water each day to stay hydrated. Good in an apartment? Whether it is sitting on the couch and or throwing on the running shoes and going outside to run around and play! A healthy weight for a this breed varies for males its around and for females anywhere between pounds. Be sure to check in with your veterinarian to be sure you are on the right track of how much your dog should weigh. Which makes them such excellent watchdogs, due to their size and temperament. So make sure to nip any bad behavior in the bud before it gets out of hand. In this last part of the article, we will tell you about the Boxer Rottweiler Mix training, socialization, temperament, exercise, grooming and finally but not least the Rottweiler Boxer mix health issues. Photo by Doglime. Both parent breeds were bred to herd and defend against animals and humans. So training and socialization are two of the most important lessons to teach your puppy! So start as soon as you get home by teaching him or her the rules of the house by using positive reinforcement only. The best commands you can train your puppy on are to sit, stay, come, and lay down. When you are training, it is important to never give up on a command that you give! The moment you start allowing your puppy to not obey your commands is the day you give him the right to be the pack leader. The Rottweiler and Boxer are notorious for being hard-headed, and stubborn! So if you are having trouble training your commands into your puppy just know that it is not how your training your puppy but rather. It is just in their genetics to try and not follow your commands. So when training be firm but never heavy-handed. The best training methods are firm but gentle and never give in on command. Take your puppy out into the city whenever you are out. Let your puppy experience the sounds, smells and sights, this is getting your puppy used to the strange sound smells and sights. He also should be meeting different people and animals, on his daily walks. This gets him to understand that he needs to learn the proper temperament and manners in greeting other animals and more importantly humans. Lifespan Sociability The Boxweiler is a very active, high-energy dog whose intelligence allows for relatively easy training as long as it is done with consistency and patience. They enjoy a good cuddle as much as running after a ball and playing fetch. They are healthy dogs overall but having an understanding of some of the conditions that the parent breeds are susceptible to, will help you understand your dog as it ages. While they are not aggressive dogs, they are wary of strangers and other animals, so proper socialization as puppies is essential. The Boxweiler tends to gain weight and needs plenty of exercise. The Boxweiler will only drool depending on which parent it takes after. The Rottweiler tends to drool, whereas the Boxer does not. If the Boxweiler is more alike to the Boxer parent , it is less likely to drool, but if it takes after the Rottweiler parent, it could be a drooler. The Boxweiler may prefer to be the only pet in the household. If the Boxweiler is properly socialized as a puppy with other pets, they will accommodate and adapt well with other animals. However, the Boxweiler is a herding dog and will instinctively chase other animals, and therefore the household might benefit from keeping the Boxweiler as the only pet. If they are kept busy and not left alone for long periods, the Boxweiler will grow into a happy and well-adjusted dog that will make an excellent family pet. However, the Boxweiler would do best with older children that know how to play gently with this large dog. Children should be taught how to approach dogs in a gentle and non-threatening manner so the dog will feel comfortable and become an eager and energetic companion. The Boxweiler more than likely will have the same instincts and therefore, will do best in a home as the only pet. However, if properly socialized as a puppy, they could adapt to living with other pets, including cats. They might have a predisposition to gain weight, so following a strict schedule and not leaving food out throughout the day would work best. Coming from the Rottweiler and the Boxer, which are both working dogs, the Boxweiler needs to be kept busy with walks and play. Allowing these large dogs room to run in a yard makes them less suitable for apartments. Training should be accomplished with persistence and firmness tempered with praise and positive reinforcement. Consistent training and lots of socialization, while they are puppies, is critical. Trimming nails carefully, cleaning ears , and brushing teeth are all common grooming habits every dog needs to keep them healthy. Brushing their teeth regularly to avoid dental issues combined with frequent grooming will also help your dog to maintain its health. Minor Conditions Rottweilers might experience hypothyroidism , lower eyelid droop , cataracts and allergies. While Boxers are also susceptible to hypothyroidism, they are also prone to bowel disease and corneal erosion. Serious Conditions The Rottweiler is prone to hip dysplasia , bone cancer , heart disease and bloat or stomach dilatation. The Boxer might also experience hip dysplasia, heart disease, as well as bloat or stomach dilation like the Rottweiler, but are also susceptible to irregular heartbeat and occasional problems with spinal cord disease and brain tumors. The Boxweiler has the potential to inherit some of these health issues from its parents. Therefore, the vet will check for joint dysplasia, heart disease, bone cancer, and bloat. Male vs Female Most dog breeds have minor physical differences between male and female puppies. Like most species, the females tend to be a little lighter and smaller than the males. It is thought that females tend to be less aggressive and more affectionate than the males, but this subject is up for debate. The choice of using your dog for breeding purposes will make a difference as well between the male and the female. Most dogs become calmer and less aggressive or less energetic after surgery. The primary differences between all dogs, regardless of the sex, are based on how the puppies have been raised and socialized. Final Thoughts on the Boxweiler The Boxweiler is a beautiful, loyal, intelligent, and energetic hybrid of the Rottweiler and Boxer. A firm but kind and gentle hand is the best way to handle these large and sensitive dogs. Properly socializing them to smaller animals and children, while they are puppies, will give them the best possible outcome. Online discussions through social media or attending dog shows and contacting local and national dog clubs could provide you with further assistance. Rottweiler Boxer mix puppies What is a Boxweiler? The Boxweiler is a mixed breed dog with one Rottweiler parent and one Boxer dog parent. They are usually bred as pet dogs, but also have a rich working history on both sides of the family. It is thought to have descended from the Drover dogs of ancient Rome. Here they are thought to have mixed with local breeds such as the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Appenzeller. It was added to the American Kennel Club registry in .The Rottweiler is a working dog, used throughout history for bear hunting, police work, cattle herding, and even to pull carriages for passengers. It is descended from the Tibetan line of Mastiff which in turn was a descendent of the Molossus. A full grown Boxweiler will typically weigh between 60 and 80 pounds — although reaching up to lbs is not unheard of. They are typically happy, healthy pups with an average lifespan of 8 to 13 years. As for physical appearance, the breed can take on characteristics of either parent. So, it can end up looking like either parent breed. The one, mostly uniform characteristic is a large, square head. The Rottweiler has a stocky, muscular body, while the Boxer has a lean, muscular build. A Boxweiler could take on either of these body types, or somewhere in between. Their colorings vary, but are almost always a shade of brown. Mixed brown and black spots are also possible. And they will sometimes have a white splotch on their chest or belly. Boxer Rottweiler Mix Grooming Boxweilers are moderate shedders and should be brushed about times per week. Although they are short haired, they can still shed quite a bit all year round. This breed requires moderate grooming in order to keep its rough coat in good shape. Full of energy, these pups are highly intelligent and loyal. They are typically friendly, but can get quite protective and will keep a close eye on strangers. Boxweilers are working dogs, so they tend to enjoy having some sort of role to fill. Rottweiler Boxer mix dogs are loving and affectionate, and enjoy human interaction. They are moderately dependent — meaning that they can be left alone, but they are prone to separation anxiety if left on their own for long periods of time. Boxweilers are usually good with other dogs, although early socialization is key. They are very good with children, so long as they are socialized properly. Boxweilers need to be walked at least twice per day. And ideally should have a fenced yard to run around in. They enjoy playing with other dogs, so long as they are properly socialized and not aggressive. A Boxweiler puppy can take on any of the attributes — positive or negative — of either parent. Boxers are more prone to heart conditions, cancers, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and degenerative myelopathy. Rottweilers are more prone to eye problems like cataracts, heart problems, gastroenteritis, hypothyroidism, and other conditions. Since both breeds have a tendency for heart problems, this should be one of the primary concerns for new Boxweiler parents. Several heart conditions are possible, but the most serious is probably Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. A condition that can be fatal. Weight gain is another common issue with this breed. Rottweiler Boxer mix dogs can put on weight quickly. If not exercised enough or if overfed, they can become overweight. Canine obesity can also increase the risk of other health problems, particularly relating to the heart. Some other potential health issues. These include joint dysplasia, hip dysplasia , allergies, mange, pano, cancer, heart defects, bloat, eye problems, and deafness. Are mixed breeds healthier? Some claim that pedigree, purebred breeds are superior due to their consistency and predictability. On the other side of the aisle, many breeders and fans of the crossbreed claim that there are significant benefits to designer dogs. There are some legitimate potential health issues with purebred dogs. These are often caused by years of inbreeding — which can sometimes be reduced through cross breeding. Cross breeding advocates claim that there can be some benefits to genetic diversity in dog breeds. Ultimately, it all comes down to the breeding process, the knowledge of the breeder, and the genetics of the parents. Certain cross breeds are prone to specific behavioral and health issues, but the same could be said for certain purebred dogs. The biggest consideration is the energy level of these dogs. Boxweilers need regular exercise, at least twice per day. They also should have plenty of space to move around, so a small apartment is likely not suitable for this breed. Beyond that, consider the fact that Boxweilers are prone to separation anxiety. If you work long hours and will need to leave your dog alone all day, this breed is probably not going to be the best choice. Overall, the Boxweiler is a friendly and social breed. Boxweilers are protective without being overly aggressive. They can make very good guard dogs and will not hesitate to protect your family should the need arise. Prospective Boxweiler parents should weigh the pros and cons of the breed — including potential health problems — before making their decision. An experienced breeder will know the proper techniques for breeding healthy, happy dogs. They will likely test the parents for potential health problems, which helps to reduce the risk of health concerns in the puppies. When you locate a breeder, ask to see any health certificates or test results that they have for the parents. It could have been treated poorly or abused, which could translate to aggression or unwanted behavior. With that said, every dog deserves a good home. If you are willing to adopt and accept the risks, we encourage it. References and Further Reading Malm et al.
